Honestly, it s not that hard to see why. Both shows originated as video games Digimon started out as Tamagotchi-like virtual pets and Pokémon was a series of role-playing games before expanding to trading cards, TV shows, and movies.While Pokémon grew to become a multimedia juggernaut that has churned out TV seasons non-stop since 1997 and produced over 20 feature films, Digimon has quietly but steadily remained in its shadow since it premiered in 1999. But with the recent release of Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, and with the franchise s first film, Digimon: The Movie, celebrating its 20th anniversary this month, it s about time we take out our Digivice, become champions of the Digital World, and explore why Digimon is the superior 90s franchise about young kids who befriend small fighting monsters.It Was Appointment TV(Photo by FOX)By the late 90s, we were already entering the era of prestige TV, as the arrival of shows like The Sopranos and The West Wing, with a stronger focus on serialized narratives, forced people to tune in every week or risk missing important plot points. Though children s television at the time was mostly episodic, Digimon marked a groundbreaking development for many kids of the era who discovered that they too had to watch every episode if they wanted to follow along with the story.Many episodes ended on cliffhangers, characters experienced genuine story arcs, and smaller events and characters were frequently referenced later. Sometimes, major characters would be separated from each other for weeks at a time, and side characters would suddenly become important. This made for a more challenging but rewarding experience that treated children like a serious TV-viewing audience. More than anything, the show trusted its young viewers to keep up with its narrative week by week, so that by the time the epic finale came each season, the anticipation for it had been building for months.It Tackled Mature Subjects(Photo by FOX)Digimon is very much a Saturday morning cartoon-style show aimed at kids, but it got away with a surprising amount of depth. Unlike many of its contemporaries, Digimon featured character development that would unfold over the course of each season. The second season spent a lot of time telling the story of the self-proclaimed Digimon Emperor, who is consumed by darkness and begins to take over the Digital World before atoning for his sins in a redemption arc that spans several episodes.The show also explored themes that were relatable to kids but seldom seen in kids cartoons, like exploring the effects of a divorce on a family, the pressure of living up to one s family s expectations, or the grief of losing a loved one. In the third season, a character named Jeri is even thrown into a weeks-long depression after the death of a Digimon friend. Indeed, Digimon fully acknowledged that its titular creatures are dangerous beings, and danger lurks behind every corner, sometimes with devastating results. The show was upbeat and action-packed for the most part, but it was never afraid to pull at your heartstrings, either.Its Stakes Were Incredibly High(Photo by FOX)Digimon isn t about collecting all the monsters, or about fighting a new villain each week; it s about kids on a mission to literally save the world. No offense to Jessie and James of Pokémon s Team Rocket, but they aren t the most competent villains out there. Meanwhile, the Digital World of Digimon is home to some seriously monstrous villains capable of ruthless evil. Each season hinges on world-ending stakes that require the kids to work against all odds with the help of a friend or two to win the day. In most of the seasons (as well as the recent movie and new reboot), the Digital World even leaks into the real world, threatening to destroy everything.Such high stakes have meant that the series has lost more than a few of its characters. This may be a children s show, but Digimon has never been afraid to kill off beloved heroes in heartbreaking ways we still haven t healed from the devastating loss of Wizardmon in the original series. Plenty of friends and allies have met their demise over the course of the show, so much so that one character held a funeral for lost friends during the first season. But sure, remind me how sad it was when Ash said goodbye to Butterfree — which wasn t even permanent.The Movie Is Bonkers and Has a Fantastic, Totally 90s Soundtrack(Photo by Everett Collection)Speaking of high stakes, the plot of Digimon: The Movie is completely nuts. The main characters (still 10 years old, by the way) literally have to prevent a nuclear warhead from exploding over Tokyo after a virus-infected Digimon takes over the U.S. nuclear arsenal specifically to target a couple of kids. It takes a while for the kids to bring the fight to the bad guy, though, because they also have to battle… slow internet connections and the unreliable email.Considering the movie was cobbled together from three short films and packaged for release outside of Japan, it s a wonder the story makes any sense at all. It s also worth noting that two of those three short films were the early efforts of acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda, who would go on to make films like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Mirai.But the greatest thing about Digimon: The Movie isn t its ludicrous story, but its bizarre yet surprisingly solid soundtrack. Just as Pokémon: The First Movie included songs by Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, and NSYNC, the producers of Digimon went all out to make their movie the most 90s event ever. In addition to the show s theme song, which reflects a time when every anime show was marketed to American audiences with hip hop, the film s pop soundtrack includes everything from Fatboy Slim, Barenaked Ladies sexually-charged One Week, and a fantastic cover of Kids in America by Len to a pre-Shrek All Star by the one and only Smash Mouth to close out the film. That s right, pre-Shrek. Meme or not, that s hard to top.It Knew How to End(Photo by Toei Animation)Franchises eventually change, whether they re Star Wars, Marvel, or Toy Story, but Pokémon, despite an occasional change of scenery, has otherwise remained pretty much the same, plot- and character-wise. Digimon, on the other hand, always knew its audience was eventually going to grow up, so it grew up with them. 2015 saw the release of Digimon Tri, a series of movies that picked up 5 years after the end of the original show, with the characters now in high-school. Then, Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna came out earlier this year and, like Toy Story 3 did for a little while, actually dared to say goodbye to the franchise with a story that signals from the get-go that it will be Agumon and Tai s final adventure.Digimon s audience came of age with the franchise because Digimon is a coming-of-age story. It recognized its place in the audience s life and has grown to reflect the same changes its audience has experienced. Digimon knows some things from our childhood will inevitably have to be left behind. Though the series was ultimately rebooted earlier this year, Last Evolution Kizuna puts a bittersweet bow on 20 years of adventures that began with Digimon Adventure and Digimon: The Movie, which is an example that more franchises honestly should follow.Digimon: The Movie was released in theaters on October 6, 2000.On an Apple device? That s right, 32 years ago, the future was already being written by an intrepid explorer in a theme park. That explorer s name? Captain EO. That theme park? The happiest place on earth, Disneyland. At the time, Disney and Michael Jackson put on a show they labeled a 4D presentation, a space opera in 3D augmented by in-theater laser light effects, smoke machines, and more.Sure, the 3D was a little hokey, with things jumping out at viewers just to show off the technology, but it was so much more than that. The in-theater effects extended the reach of the 3D film and worked to fully immerse audiences in EO s world for 17 minutes. Having experienced Captain EO firsthand when I was a lad, I can tell you that I have fond, very clear memories of it. EO was event entertainment, a moviegoing experience that was extraordinary, worth the price of admission, something you put on your calendar and looked forward to.Fast forward to 2018, and it s been a good year for the cinemas, but that s relative to the steady decline in box office that American movie theaters have seen over the past few years. People aren t going to the movies like they used to, and theater owners are trying everything they can to put butts in seats. IMAX alone isn t cutting it, and many IMAX experiences aren t even the four-to-seven-story screens with 70mm film that places like Los Angeles Universal Citywalk boasts it s 57 feet high by 80 feet across. Projected on an enormous screen with the sound to match, blockbusters are an event there. Companies like CJ 4DPLEX are trying to match or better that experience, hoping to pique moviegoers interest and create those Captain EO event entertainment feels.(Photo by D-Box Technologies Inc.)Before we get into what CJ has, though, let s go over some of the other options currently available. You could spend your movie money on D-Box seats, which we first told you about here. I really wasn’t impressed with them, and even less so now, having experienced 4DX. For a quick recap, they re basically rumble seats. They have some movement, but I found them to be more of a distraction than a compliment to the film I saw; at the time, I thought their best feature was the ability to disable them.If rumble seats aren t your thing, many AMC theaters are now equipped with Dolby Cinema auditoriums. Think of amenities like Dolby Cinema and Cinemark s XD screens as elevated theater experiences. The former gets you Dolby Vision HDR with dual-laser projection and Dolby Atmos for sound, while the latter gets you true IMAX-size entertainment with its 70 foot-high screen. I know, I know, English motherf er! Do you speak it?! Yes, Mr. Jackson, I do.Think of Dolby Cinema and Cinemark XD like upgrading your 10-year-old flat screen TV to today s OLED 4K HDR panels. It s brighter, you re going to see more colors and definition, and the sound will be an upgrade as well. I was impressed with the punch of the bass the Dolby Cinema experience delivered, for example. You could feel the bottom end in movie scores and effects as if the theater had planted subwoofers right under your seats. These are elevated experiences no doubt, but still not the event entertainment that a true IMAX screen or Captain EO s 4D experience provided.(Photo by ScreenX)Ever heard of ScreenX? It s relatively new to the scene. Created by the same company that brought you 4DX, ScreenX wraps the theater in 270 degrees of immersive cinematography. As you can see in the image above, what you get is your standard front screen, but added to that are up to four additional projectors in the auditorium, two on each wall. CJ 4DPLEX s wizards work with the film s technical staff to take a movie like Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and convert certain scenes to expand out onto the wings of the theater, producing a more immersive experience. And for the most part, it is exactly that. Right now, only portions of the film extend onto the wings, which some may find jarring, but I found the transitions very subtle the expanded footage would fade in and fade out slowly and instead of pulling me out of the moment, they rather immersed me in the scene.Also the brainchild of CJ 4DPLEX is 4DX, and it is probably the closest we currently have to the Captain EO experience. Let me put it this way: I was not enchanted by The Crimes of Grindelwald. Frankly, it had been a long day and I was a bit tired at the time of the screening, and that may have factored into my enjoyment of it (or lack thereof). However, watching the same movie in 4DX was delightful. The opening sequence includes a Potter-style chase scene complete with a flying carriage and a thunderstorm, which were perfect for 4DX. How does all of this equate to better? The seats in the 4DX theater are more roller coaster than motion chair they have air jets and water misters, and the theater itself has some lighting effects to add to the atmosphere. During the chase scene I felt fine droplets of water hit my head (you can turn water effects off, if you choose); during certain moments the air jets hit me, augmenting on-screen action; and of course, there were the motion seats. Like I stated, it s much more than just haptics (the rumble seat stuff), though it does feature some solid haptic effects, too. The best way I can describe the seat is energetic. It pitched and yawed and tilted, and at times it did so somewhat jarringly, though not in a bad way. The level of activity, the sharpness, was commensurate with the on-screen action.(Photo by CJ 4DPLEX)Additionally, you might think the seat s action would be tied exclusively to the action sequences, but you d be wrong. During moments in the film when there were sweeping camera moves, the chairs panned and tilted right along with the camera, and though that took some getting used to at first, it pulled me into the moment as if I were right there on the set, behind the camera with the cinematographer. Let me be clear: It is very active, and I can see some moviegoers not liking it at all. But I ve been telling friends with young children about it, and I plan to take my wife next time.So what does the future look like? A few things. I think we ll see CJ 4DPLEX combine ScreenX with 4DX a natural progression in my opinion and give theatergoers the ultimate in immersion. Well, maybe penultimate mixing 4DX with VR and something called binaural audio would be the ultimate experience. Imagine watching a horror film with that level of immersion, for example. It would be so powerful that it could prove overwhelming for some viewers, just as the original theatrical release of The Exorcist was. Imagine Saving Private Ryan as a VR/3D audio experience, plunging viewers into the middle of WWII like never before. Imagine dodging bullets alongside Keanu Reeves as you quite literally explore The Matrix. This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new roles for stars like Tom Cruise, Ryan Gosling, and Tiffany Haddish.This WEEK S TOP STORYRYAN GOSLING TO STAR IN DAVID LEITCH ACTION FILM(Photo by Richard Foreman Jr/©FilmDistrict)About seven years ago, the news broke that Dwayne Johnson was in talks to star in an adaptation of the 1980s action TV show The Fall Guy, which featured Lee Majors as a luckless stuntman who investigated crimes on the side (a formula that dominated TV of that era). That project never happened, and it appears to have fallen deeply out of development, but the premise of a movie about a stuntman is still relevant (and indeed, it s what half of last year s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was about). This week, after a heated auction, Universal Pictures has landed the rights to an untitled Hollywood stuntman action drama project that has Ryan Gosling attached to star for director David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw). Leitch is himself a former stuntman and stunt coordinator, and Ryan Gosling has already played a stuntman in two previous films (Drive and The Place Beyond the Pines). In their coverage of the deal, The Hollywood Reporter leans heavily into comparisons to The Fall Guy and Hollywood s long interest in a Fall Guy movie, but at this point, there seems to be no confirmation that the movie actually is an adaptation of that TV show. Other studios that bid against Universal Pictures included MGM, Paramount, and Netflix.Other Top Headlines1. BOTH BLACK WIDOW AND WEST SIDE STORY NOW DELAYED UNTIL 2021 (Photo by Marvel Studios)There are still some major movies scheduled for theatrical releases in the next few months (including No Time to Die, Pixar s Soul, Dune, and Wonder Woman 1984), but this week, Walt Disney Pictures made big changes regarding several of their upcoming films, delaying more of their most anticipated titles. Marvel Studios first return to the MCU post Avengers: Endgame will be the prequel Black Widow, which is now scheduled for May 7, 2021 after originally being dated for May 1, 2020 and then more recently, November 6, 2020. This shift means that other Marvel movies are also being bumped back, starting with Eternals (now 11/5/2021) and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (now 7/9/2021). Disney also pushed back Steven Spielberg s remake of West Side Story almost a full year from December 18, 2020 to December 10, 2021. In an interesting turn of events, that means that Lin-Manuel Miranda s In the Heights (6/18/2021) is effectively opening before West Side Story again after it was rescheduled from its original June 26, 2020 release date earlier this year. The COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to impact the movie release calendar, and these changes likely won t be the last, so stay tuned for more updates.2. WONG KAR-WAI NOW WORKING ON SEQUEL TO 1994 CLASSIC CHUNGKING EXPRESS (Photo by Everett Collection)When Bong Joon-ho won big at this year s Academy Awards for Parasite, including Best Picture, it shed some light on other acclaimed international filmmakers who in the past mostly had to settle for the Foreign Film category. One such director who has shockingly never been nominated for an Academy Award is Wong Kar-wai, whose filmography includes Fallen Angels, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love, and the 1996 arthouse hit Chungking Express (Certified Fresh at 87%). That film might seem like an odd choice to receive a sequel some 26+ years later, but according to Chinese authorities, that s apparently exactly what Wong Kar-wai has planned, as he has submitted a screenplay called Chungking Express 2020 that the Chinese government has approved to move into production. The plot summary offered in the filing is curious, as it first recounts the story of Chungking Express, which followed two separate stories involving police officers, and then describes a new scenario that takes place in the future: In 2036, young Xiao Qian and May are unwilling to be held back by genetic partnerings, and insist on finding their own destiny.' It remains unclear if the new film will revisit the two stories of the first movie in some way.3. TIFFANY HADDISH JOINS NICOLAS CAGE META-COMEDY(Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)Production will soon begin on the Lionsgate action-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which Nicolas Cage will play a fictionalized version of himself. The premise of the movie follows Cage as he accepts a million-dollar offer from a wealthy super-fan (played by Pedro Pascal) that leads to Cage being forced to re-enact some of his most popular classic movie scenes. This week, we found out who will be joining Pascal as another fictional character, as Tiffany Haddish has signed on to co-star in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent as an eccentric rogue government agent who forces superstar Nicolas Cage to go undercover in a crazy, off-book, last-ditch effort to bring one of the largest criminal organizations in Europe down for good. It s unclear if this undercover assignment is part of the main storyline involving Pedro Pascal s character, or perhaps a b-story elsewhere in the movie (but it s probably the former).4. RON HOWARD TO DIRECT BIOPIC ABOUT CHINESE PIANIST SUPERSTAR LANG LANG (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/©Universal Pictures)Chinese pianist Lang Lang is only 38 years old, but he has already received an international reception more typical of a classical musician twice his age. He s also apparently impressed many within Hollywood s upper echelons, because Ron Howard has signed on to direct an untitled Lang Lang biopic to be based on his memoir, Journey of a Thousand Miles. The planned biopic will depict Lang s journey from a childhood in the northern Chinese city of Shenyang to fame both in China and across the entire world. It s not yet known if Howard or his producing partners plan on casting Lang to play himself. In a statement about the film s announcement, Lang Lang said, Dream big, work hard, and always believe in yourself. This movie, thanks to Ron Howard’s vision, will inspire young people around the world to follow their dreams and never forget they are one in a million. 5. TOM CRUISE S SPACE X TRIP OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)Hollywood may move at its own languid pace, but it s nothing compared to the last few decades of manned space exploration, which seems to have drastically slowed down following the amazing speed at which it developed in the 1960s and 1970s. One of the most surprising movie announcements of 2020 thus far came in May when Tom Cruise announced his plans to become the first movie star to actually film scenes for a major Hollywood production in outer space himself. This project got one step closer to actually happening this week as the official Twitter account for Space Shuttle Almanac formally added Tom Cruise s outer space project to their list of planned missions. Commander Michael Lopez-Alegria will pilot a Space X Crew Dragon Axiom Tourist FLight in October, 2021 with Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman (American Made, Edge of Tomorrow) aboard, presumably with at least one other crew member to aid in whatever they have planned to film in space. There is no release date (or title) for Tom Cruise s space movie yet, but given the late 2021 filming, we can probably expect it sometime in 2022 or perhaps 2023.6. EVA LONGORIA IS READY (TO DIRECT) A NICE LONG SPA DAY(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)After her long run on the hit ABC dramedy series Desperate Housewives, Eva Longoria has increasingly turned her attention towards a new career as producer and director, including several TV shows and plans for the Flamin Hot Cheetos movie (seriously). That film could eventually become Longoria s directorial debut feature, but with pandemic delays wreaking havoc on production schedules, it s anyone s guess when that movie will even be released. In the meantime, Longoria added another movie to her possible future filmography this week, signing on with Sony Pictures to star in, produce, and direct a female ensemble action comedy called Spa Day. The premise is being kept secret for now, but it s pretty easy to imagine what it will be like based on just the title, the genres, and the star and director. We ve all seen movies.7. LONG-RUNNING SONY VIDEO GAME FRANCHISE YAKUZA GETTING ITS OWN MOVIE(Photo by Sega)This story is ostensibly about the long-running Yazuka video game franchise, but let s start by remembering another similar video game. Shenmue was a 1999 game for the Sega Dreamcast set in the world of 1980s Japanese crime gangs (and martial arts), but the reason it s particularly relevant here is that, in 2001, the cut scenes for the game were packaged together as Shenmue: The Movie. Fast forward twenty years, and it s easy to argue that many video games could be adapted as movies that way (it would probably be a lot cheaper too). The Yakuza games also published by Sega are increasingly cinematic in that way, but this week s news of plans for a Yakuza movie describe the film as live action. Yakuza is Sega s second best-selling franchise after Sonic the Hedgehog, who made his super speed jump to the movies earlier this year, so it makes sense that the game publisher is now turning its attention towards getting a Yakuza movie produced as well. Variety describes the first Yakuza game this way: Kazuma Kiryu [is] released from a 10-year prison sentence after taking the fall for the murder of his family’s patriarch, [and as] the entire Japanese underworld is pulled into the search for 0 million stolen from the vault of his former clan, Kiryu is forced back into the lawless world of the Yakuza. 8. UNIVERSAL TO TRY OUT FANCY NEW TECHNOLOGY WITH ICE CUBE SCI-FI MOVIE (Photo by Bob Mahoney/©Warner Bros.)The old school studio system of classic Hollywood may have gone away decades ago, but we do still see today movie stars who have strong relationships with specific studios. Rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube, for example, starred in Universal s Ride Along (Rotten at 18%) and its sequel (Rotten at 13%), as well as the upcoming Flint Strong boxing biopic. Ice Cube is now signed to reunite with Universal Pictures on an untitled grounded science fiction project to be directed by frequent music video director Rich Lee. The premise hasn t been revealed yet, except that it was compared to District 9, and the focus right now appears to be on the new screen capture technology that producer Timur Bekmambetov is bringing to the project.9. NEXT FATHER OF THE BRIDE REMAKE TO FOCUS ON LATINX FAMILY (Photo by ©Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Every once in a while in Hollywood s history, there will be a remake so beloved that it s actually more famous than the original John Carpenter s The Thing is a frequently cited example of that. Another remake that seems to have gone on to overshadow the legacy of the original movie is 1991 s Father of the Bride (Fresh at 70%), starring Steve Martin, which was actually a remake of the 1950 film starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. We re getting another reminder of the remake s enduring popularity soon, as Netflix this week released the trailer for a special called Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish), which promises to reunite franchise stars like Steve Martin and Diane Keaton. We also learned this week that Warner Bros. has plans for another Father of the Bride remake, this time revolving around a Latinx family as a father deals with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the prism of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American family. This new version is also being described as more of a rom-com than previous versions of the film. Screenwriter Matt Lopez, who has previously worked on other remakes like Disney s Race to Witch Mountain (Rotten at 43%) and The Sorcerer s Apprentice (Rotten at 40%) was reportedly influenced by his own cross-cultural nuptials and the many epic Cuban weddings he has attended. This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Blade the Vampire Slayer, Captain Marvel 2, and Face/Off.This WEEK S TOP STORYA WIZARD OF OZ REMAKE IS IN THE WORKS(Photo by Everett Collection)Although the Oz books by author L. Frank Baum are well known, one could argue that the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz left such a strong legacy that it kept the number of later Oz movies to a relative minimum, including The Wiz (Rotten at 42%), Return to Oz (Rotten at 53%), and 2013 s Oz the Great and Powerful (Rotten at 57%). With this week s news, however, there are now three major productions in development based on or inspired by those books. Just last week, the Wicked movie (based on the stage musical prequel) received a breath of fresh air in the form of Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu, who joined the project. And then, this week, the animated adaptation of the spin-off book Toto: The Dog-Gone Amazing Story of the Wizard of Oz made its next step toward production via a new deal between Warner Bros. and the animation studio Animal Logic. As big of a deal as both Wicked and Toto might potentially be, however, the third project announced this week has the potential to be the biggest, as New Line Cinema is now developing a new adaptation of L. Frank Baum s original novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which was the direct inspiration for the classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. New Line has hired director Nicole Kassell (The Woodsman, Certified Fresh at 88%) to start development on the film, which unlike other adaptations can use elements from the 1939 movie, like the ruby slippers. Kassell also recently directed three episodes of HBO s Watchmen.Other Top Headlines1. SANDRA BULLOCK JOINS BRAD PITT S ACTION MOVIE BULLET TRAIN(Photo by ©Warner Bros.)Sandra Bullock and Brad Pitt have been two of Hollywood s biggest stars since the 1990s, but they ve never appeard together in the same movie. As of this week, that s about to change, as Bullock has joined the ensemble cast of the action movie Bullet Train, alongside Brad Pitt, Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Aaron Taylor Johnson (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Michael Shannon, Brian Tyree Henry, Joey King, Logan Lerman, and Masi Oka. David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw) is directing Bullet Train from a screenplay by Zak Olkewicz (in what may be his first released film) adapted from the novel Maria Beetle by Japanese author Kōtarō Isaka, which tells the story of five assassins aboard a bullet train in Japan who discover that their targets are all related. Although Pitt is expected to be one of the assassins, it s not yet clear if Sandra Bullock is playing one, too.2. VELVET BUZZSAW ACTRESS CAST AS MYSTERIOUS CAPTAIN MARVEL 2 VILLAIN(Photo by ©Strand Releasing courtesy Everett Collection)The Marvel Cinematic Universe occasionally recruits its villains from relative comic book obscurity. In addition to major villains like Thanos, Dormammu, Hela, The Red Skull, and Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 gave us Ayesha, and the various Black Order villains in Avengers: Infinity War weren t even introduced in the comics until as recently as 2013. So, when an MCU villain is cast, but Marvel doesn t say who it is, we re left wondering if it s someone iconic or someone even diehard comics fans might need to look up on a wiki site. That leads us to the news today that Velvet Buzzsaw co-star Zawe Ashton has been cast as the main villain in Captain Marvel 2 (keeping in mind, of course, that Marvel movies frequently have more than one villain). Ashton is joining a cast that already includes Brie Larson (obviously), Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau from WandaVision), and Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan from the upcoming Disney+ series Ms. Marvel). Captain Marvel 2 will be directed by Nia DaCosta, whose highly anticipated sequel Candyman (8/27/2021) is due out this year after a delay prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Marvel Studios currently has scheduled Captain Marvel 2 for release on November 11, 2022.3. JACK BLACK WILL VOICE CLAPTRAP IN THE BORDERLANDS MOVIE(Photo by Hopper Stone/©Columbia Pictures)The Borderlands video game franchise is built around several characters who represent standard gaming tropes, but probably the most popular character in the games is the comedic robot NPC (non-player character) Claptrap. The first time we ever heard about casting for the Borderlands movie was in May of 2020, when Cate Blanchett started negotiations to play Lilith, the Siren, which established that the Borderlands movie is aiming for A-list stars. That was a trend we saw continue two weeks ago when Kevin Hart also joined the project as Roland, the Soldier. The third cast member to be announced was Jamie Lee Curtis (who also has two more Halloween movies coming in 2021 and 2022), who will play the scientist Dr. Tannis, another NPC in the games. That news was followed this week by the news that Jack Black will provide the voice of Claptrap, meaning that both characters cast this week aren t any of the games playable characters. Like Blanchett, Jack Black previously worked with director Eli Roth on the kids movie The House with a Clock in its Walls (Fresh at 65%), and more recently, he co-starred alongside Hart in the sequel Jumanji: The Next Level.4. WATCHMEN SCREENWRITER TO ADAPT MARVEL S BLADE STARRING MAHERSHALA ALI (Photo by ©New Line Cinema courtesy Everett Collection)One of the most surprising announcements at Marvel Studios San Diego Comic-Con presentation in 2019 was the news that the vampire hunter Blade would be rebooted for the MCU with two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali attached to take over the role. This week, Blade took its next step forward by hiring screenwriter Stacy Osei-Kuffour, who previously worked on the HBO Max superhero show Watchmen. Blade does not yet have a director or a release date, but Kevin Feige confirmed in 2019 that it would be part of Marvel s Phase 5 (we re currently in Phase 4). According to The Hollywood Reporter, the title of the film will be Blade the Vampire Slayer (not to be confused with Buffy the Vampire Slayer). In somewhat related news, Hong Chau, who co-starred in Watchmen as the (borderline) antagonist Lady Trieu, has joined Brendan Fraser in The Whale, the next film from director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Black Swan), about a man who weighs over 600 pounds.5. ELISABETH MOSS JOINS MOVIE ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE GODFATHER (Photo by Mark Rogers/©Universal Pictures)One of the projects that Armie Hammer s dropped out of following his recent downfall was the Paramount+ series The Offer, about the behind-the-scenes drama behind the making of The Godfather (Certified Fresh at 98%). The true story of the making of The Godfather was to be both a series and a feature film, and Oscar Isaac and Jake Gyllenhaal have both been attached to star in the untitled feature film for a while now, as director Francis Ford Coppola and Paramount executive Robert Evans, respectively. This week, the film gained its third cast member, as Elisabeth Moss has joined the untitled project as Francis Ford Coppola s wife, Eleanor Coppola, who later went on to have her own directorial career. Whatever it ends up being titled, this making-of-The-Godfather feature film will be directed by Barry Levinson, whose recent films The Wizard of Lies, and Paterno were also based on true stories.6. MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ JOINS DUNGEONS DRAGONS (Photo by Giles Keyte/©Universal Pictures)Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the first live-action Dungeons Dragons (Rotten at 10%), and about the fifth anniversary of the start of development on a new reboot of the franchise (not counting the two direct-to-video sequels to the 2000 version). In 2017, Dungeons Dragons moved from Warner Bros. to Paramount Pictures, where the latter s Star Trek star Chris Pine signed on in December. This week, Dungeons Dragons signed two more stars, both of whom have had their biggest box office successes with Universal Pictures franchises. Fast and the Furious star Michelle Rodriguez and Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Detective Pikachu) have both signed on to co-star in Paramount s reboot of Dungeons Dragons, based on the popular role-playing game franchise. As with Chris Pine, the specifics about what sorts of characters they will play hasn t been announced yet. Dungeons Dragons (5/27/2022) will be directed for Paramount Pictures by the team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who previously directed the Vacation reboot (Rotten at 27%) in 2015 and the much better received 2018 comedy Game Night (Certified Fresh at 85%).7. ADAM WINGARD WILL DIRECT A REBOOT/SEQUEL OF FACE/OFF(Photo by ©Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)It feels like decades now that Hollywood has been obsessed with rebooting, remaking, and reimagining the movies of the 1980s, but slowly, gradually, the focus is turning to the much-maligned decade of the 1990s. If one movie is an iconic example of the 1990s action movie, there s a strong argument to be made for director John Woo s 1997 film Face/Off (Certified Fresh at 92%), starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta as two men on opposite sides of the law who literally exchange faces. Director Adam Wingard (The Guest, Blair Witch, Death Note) most recently directed the upcoming monster movie Godzilla vs Kong (3/31/2021), so he s currently looking towards future projects, and one of them will be a reboot of the Face/Off franchise that will take the form of a sequel to the original film with a new cast. Of course, if any movie lends itself to being both remade and sequelized at the same time, it s Face/Off, since the premise basically negates any continuity issues.8. RUMOR CONTROL: SUPERMAN WON T BE IN SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS AFTER ALL (Photo by Clay Enos/©Warner Bros.)After the DC Comics movie Shazam! (Certified Fresh at 90%) ended with a comedy beat featuring a body double as Superman, fans were probably not at all surprised by online speculation and rumors that Henry Cavill would be co-starring as the Man of Steel in the sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods (6/2/2023). Well, Variety debunked that rumor this week, as the trade publication has confirmed that Henry Cavill will not be joining Zachary Levi and Asher Angel in Shazam! Fury of the Gods as Superman. Shazam! director David F. Sandberg also Tweeted recently that halfway through shooting Shazam the plan was still for Cavill to be in it. Scoopers could have scooped that and been right at the time but wrong in the end. 9. ANIMATION STUDIO BEHIND ICE AGE, RIO, AND THE PEANUTS MOVIE TO SHUT DOWN(Photo by ©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Walt Disney Pictures was already a massive hive of competing subsidiaries (including both Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios) before the 2019 finalization of the acquisition of the various Fox TV and film properties. So, this week s news is not particularly surprising, but it is still always sad to hear about the shutdown of a major employer, and for over 20 years, Blue Sky Studios was exactly that, with nearly 450 employees. Blue Sky released 13 animated feature films, including Ice Age and its four sequels, Rio (and Rio 2), Dr. Seuss Horton Hears a Who, The Peanuts Movie, and most recently and finally, Spies in Disguise. Specifically, the reason for Blue Sky shutting down is the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the Blue Sky library is still part of Disney, as are their intellectual properties, one project which will be canned is the animated adaptation of the Nimona webcomic by creator Noelle Stevenson, whose Lumberjanes was also at one point in development at 20th Century Fox as an animated feature. Nimona has previously been scheduled for release on January 14, 2022, and when it was cancelled, the film still had 10 months of production left.On an Apple device? Hereditary, starring Toni Collette in an awards-worthy performance, is a family drama that plays out like one long exhilarating gasp for breath. Aster’s follow-up, Midsommar digs around in the same psychological playground, though this time covering the dissolution of a romantic relationship. Both films recategorize the meaning of “scare,” as Aster mines the terror of simply being uncomfortable with other people to a nearly wacky psycho-comedy effect.Jordan Peele(Photo by Claudette Barius / © Universal)What else is there to say about Jordan Peele? He single-handedly proved that black people want to see themselves in horror films and that other people all over the world would like to see it too. His films stray so far from what many would deem commercially acceptable — a lengthy monologue about inequality delivered amongst a bunch of rabbits in a kind of magical basement world? And yet his stories are compelling because they’re unlike anything else in theaters, their cinematic influences evident but not overbearing. Peele’s making horror weird again, and he’s making it matter.Jennifer Kent(Photo by ©IFC Midnight/Courtesy Everett Collection)When Jennifer Kent’s debut horror The Babadook shocked audiences, the potential for horror to mine desperate grief came into 20/20 view. Not only that, but distinctly down-and-dirty, terrible, feminine grief. It’s not unusual for horror films to star women — this has been a defining characteristic of the genre — but it was unusual to see a heroine slowly morph into a highly relatable villain in such a visceral manner. In her newest film The Nightingale, Kent continues to push her heroines past a point of likeability with an eye on doing away with the “strong woman” trope that has rendered so many female characters into caricatures of femininity.Mike Flanagan(Photo by Justin M. Lubin/© Universal Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Mike Flanagan has toiled in the genre fields for almost two decades, writing, directing, and editing his own films, which included Ghosts of Hamilton Street, Absentia, Oculus, and Hush, before he got his name-making box office hit, Ouija: Origin of Evil. Flanagan has a rare ability to please mainstream audiences while still pushing boundaries of horror, as he did with the wildly popular Haunting of Hill House Netflix series, which, among other cool tricks, hid a number of ghosts in the frame. That kind of subtle innovation comes from a filmmaker who’s familiar with all tools at their disposal, and his adaptation of a sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep, is much anticipated for that reason.Issa LopezMexican director Issa Lopez made a name for herself in her native country by directing a series of comic films, but her debut horror film Tigers Are Not Afraid (trailer above) couldn’t have been a bigger departure from her earlier career. Filled with wonder and grit and meaningful insights into childhood, trauma, and the human soul in the harshest environment imaginable, the film has been racking up fans and awards long before its U.S. release on Shudder. Guillermo del Toro luckily saw the film and immediately signed up to produce her next movies, so this Master in the making is already well on her way.Guillermo del Toro(Photo by Kerry Hayes/©Universal Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)Speaking of Guillermo del Toro, it’s difficult to overstate how much of a boon for horror this visionary director has been, but del Toro was pioneering new directions for horror years before it came back in fashion. From Cronos and The Devil’s Backbone all the way up to Pan’s Labyrinth and the slept-on Crimson Peak, del Toro’s body of work feels so ingrained in the culture that it’s almost easy to take him for granted. Not to mention that he’s spent a great deal of time championing the newer generation of horror directors like Issa Lopez, Scott Cooper, and André Øvredal, producing double the number of films he directs himself. He is, for all intents and purposes, the godfather of the new Masters of Horror.Isa Mazzei Daniel Goldhaber(Photo by © Netflix)This pair of collaborators burst on the scene with last year’s Netflix horror hit, Cam (pictured above), about a cam girl sex worker whose identity is stolen and used against her. In a novel twist, the film was also respectful of women, Johns, and sex workers, never resorting to staid clichés, signaling that the pair could inclusively expand the frontiers of horror. Announcements for their next project with Blumhouse have been thin, but the film is certainly driven by women, and they’ll also be wading into TV horror with a segment for Quibi’s new 50 States of Fear.Pascal Laugier(Photo by ©Weinstein Company/Courtesy Everett Collection)Martyrs (pictured above) is not what many would call an easy film to watch. But Pascal Laugier’s most notorious feature is quite masterful. A story that opens like a revenge flick but closes with a hammer-to-the-nose of philosophical insights into perceived womanhood and spirituality, Martyrs follows in the New French Extremity footsteps of Claire Denis’ Trouble Every Day. After Martyrs, Laugier tried his hand at American horror with Jessica Biel starrer The Tall Man, but returned to his roots in 2018’s Incident in a Ghostland. Laugier shows that gore with a brain is on the menu for horror fans.Andy Muschietti(Photo by Brooke Palmer/© Warner Bros. /Courtesy Everett Collection)In 2013, Argentine director Andy Muschietti had an international hit on his hands with Mamá, about a young couple who take in their two young nieces but find that a malicious supernatural entity has decided they’re her next victims of a haunting. The film starred Jessica Chastain, setting up Muschietti’s desire to make genre but with actors of high esteem attached, which led to his re-envisioning Stephen King’s It in a two-movie release, vaunted for its playful but serious take on the story. Next up, Muschietti’s going the monster route with an adaptation of Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan, and is rumored to be directing DC’s The Flash.Kiyoshi Kurosawa(Photo by © Kimstim Films / courtesy Everett Collection)Kiyoshi Kurosawa is not a newcomer by any means. He’s been working steadily in genre and outside of it since the 1980s, as a critic, commercial artist, and a creative filmmaker. In 2001, he released his most well-known cult film Pulse, but his recent return to genre suggests he’s not quite finished being a Master. In 2016, he released Creepy, a thrilling hardboiled mystery, which he then followed up with Before We Vanish, which is an alien invasion story equal parts horror and humor that opens with a risky, bloody bang.Nicolas Pesce(Photo by © Magnet Releasing /Courtesy Everett Collection)The Eyes of My Mother (pictured above), Nicolas Pesce’s debut feature, bucks so many contemporary trends of horror, shot in black and white like a high-art film but with the creeping childishness of Tobe Hooper. He followed that up with a Cronenberg Crash-style film called Piercing that turns a sex-torture story into a screwball comedy of errors and power dynamics. Pesce’s films explore loneliness and connection with wry humor, and yet somehow it’s his visual style, evocative of classic films filled with texture and tactile pleasantness like every object has meaning and purpose, that make him a new Master.Anna Biller(Photo by © Oscilloscope / courtesy Everett Collection)Anna Biller’s version of horror feels akin to classic fairy tales. They are rife with artifice yet also completely honest. Focused on sex and sexuality but coy and childlike. There is the sense that the director is telling the story of the world as it is while simultaneously wishing the world to be different. Viva is more an off-kilter soapy drama, while her film The Love Witch (pictured above) more fully embodies horror. Rumor has it she’s been shopping another horror story based on the Bluebeard tale, but be patient for her next one: Biller’s obsessive about costuming, locations, and production design, and makes most everything herself, which is a time-consuming act but is ultimately the key to her success as a modern Master.Agnieszka Smoczynska(Photo by ©Janus Films)Half the fun of Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s debut feature The Lure (pictured above) is describing it for those who don’t know: a gritty, glittery Polish mermaid horror disco musical. The film was a time capsule of Cold War-era dancing clubs, mixed with classic fairy tales and contemporary rage-filled feminism. Music that’s as catchy as it is dark and an almost surreal, theatrical production design set The Lure apart, earning it an almost instant Criterion release. Her follow-up, Fugue, looks inward for a more cerebral melodrama of psychological terror, with the kind of innovative camera work and sensitivity that display Smoczynska’s ability to play with mind as well as body in her horror.Peter Strickland(Photo by © A24)Peter Strickland digested decades of Italian gore and giallo films, then washed it down the exploitation work of Jess Franco and spit out such atmospheric insta-classics as Berberian Sound Studio and The Duke of Burgundy. His newest film In Fabric (poster above) had so much hype and magic behind it that A24 quickly snapped it up out of the festivals. Both eerie and ethereal, In Fabric tells the story of a murderous red dress; like a chilling version of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, this thing will fit everyone but also kill them. And like his predecessors, Strickland squeezes every inch of terror out of sound design and trippy, mirrored effects, perfectly marrying the past with the present.Ana Lily Amirpour(Photo by ©Kino Lorber)Ana Lily Amirpour’s low-budget indie hit A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (pictured above) thrilled for its simple but fully realized black-and-white graphic novel aesthetics. It’s not every filmmaker whose first film creates some of the most memorable iconography in recent horror film history, but Amirpour’s vision of a young woman gliding on a skateboard with her veil flowing behind her struck a chord for women, a seeming statement about feminine violence and traditional values butting up against Western ideals. Her follow-up The Bad Batch was a sunny apocalyptic trip through the desert, but in the meantime she directed a beloved episode of the new Twilight Zone and has been attached to the remake of Cliffhanger.Babak Anvari(Photo by Kit Fraser / © Vertical Entertainment / courtesy Everett Collection)Babak Anvari’s Under the Shadow (pictured above) broke new ground in folk horror and is a rare Certified Fresh at 99%. In it, he exploited the tale of jinn, those malevolent spirits of Islamic mythology, but grounded the story in the very real cultural conflict of the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s, as told through a belabored mother who’d much rather finish her medical degree than stay at home with the young daughter who acts almost like an anchor to a more traditional life. Vivid and tense, the film found an international audience, leading to his newest release, an American production called Wounds and a new television series titled North American Lake Monsters, where Anvari can further dig into local lore.David F. Sandberg(Photo by Justin Lubin. ©Warner Bros.)David F. Sandberg’s short “Lights Out” terrified audiences internationally with a simple light trick that harkened back to the early days of horror. That short, made for nothing and starring his charismatic wife Lotta Losten, was then developed into a feature starring Teresa Palmer. James Wan continued to help Sandberg develop his career, giving him a spot in The Conjuring franchise, directing Annabelle: Creation. Sandberg has temporarily waded into superheroes with the lighthearted Shazam!, but he’s stated he’s looking forward to coming back to horror real soon, hopefully utilizing the same creative low-budget ideas that gave him his big break.James Wan(Photo by Michael Tackett/©Warner Bros. Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Speaking of James Wan, no Masters of Horror list would be complete without the Aussie who harnessed the powers of surprise and low budgets to flip the entire industry on its head with the Saw and Insidious franchises, and then again with The Conjuring. He’s the pop filmmaker of our time, delivering the kind of popcorn fare that actually brings people to the theater, a rare feat. And while they did not stick around to guide us through the night, their introduction to the Best Supporting Actress showed the Academy might be wise to let them next year. Particular highlights: Rudolph’s sultry “Wakanda plans you got later?” to Chadwick Boseman, and her perfect Gaga wail.Regina King Wins Best Supporting Actress for If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) 95%If Beale Street Could Talk co-star Regina King was named Best Supporting Actress, and – after an assist getting to the stage from Captain American himself – delivered a heartfelt speech, celebrating her mother, who accompanied her to the awards. “I’m an example of what it looks like when support and love is poured into someone,” said a teary King. She is the first winner in any acting category to win the Oscar without being nominated for a SAG or BAFTA since Marcia Gay Harden in 2000.Brian Tyree Henry and Melissa McCarthy Wear All the CostumesBrian Tyree Henry (If Beale Street Could Talk, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) introduced the Best Costume Category wearing outfits inspired by all five nominees. We will never forget the image of McCarthy opening the envelope with a rabbit puppet.Ruth E. Carter and Hannah Beachler Make History With Wins for Black Panther (2018) 96%Black Panther costumer Ruth E. Carter became the first Black woman to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, beating out favorite Sandy Powell who was nominated twice for Mary Poppins Returns and The Favourite. The 30-year veteran began her acceptance speech by thanking fellow nominee Spike Lee; the BlacKkKlansman director gave Carter her first job on School Daze, and they later collaborated for her Oscar-nominated work on Malcolm X. Next up was the award for Best Production Design, and in back-to-back historic Black Panther wins, Hannah Beachler became the first Black woman to win for Production Design. The production designer behind Beyonce’s Lemonade and all of director Ryan Coogler’s movies gave an emotional speech during which she thanked Coogler for believing in her.Mahershala Ali Wins Second Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Green Book (2018) 77%Some pundits thought Can You Ever Forgive Me? co-star Richard E. Grant was set to cause an upset here, but favorite Mahershala Ali took home the prize for his portrayal of pianist Don Shirley. The win makes Ali only the second ever Black actor to win two acting Oscars (the other being Denzel Washington). Spike Lee won his first competitive Oscar after five nominations. (He was awarded an honorary Oscar in 2016). Accepting the Best Adapted Screenplay award for BlacKkKlansman – along with Kevin Willmott, David Rabinowitz, and Charlie Wachtel – the Brooklyn native stayed on brand: bombastic and honest. During his speech, he drew attention to the date of his historic win, 400 years almost to the day since the first slaves arrived in the United States. In February, Black History Month, the country s most celebrated Black filmmaker was handed the award from Brie Larson and his longtime friend Samuel L. Jackson. It is the third year in a row that a Black writer has won for screenwriting: Jordan Peele won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out last year and Barry Jenkins won Best Adapted Screenplay in 2017 for Moonlight.A Best Actress Mega SurpriseThe Oscars proved it still has the capacity to surprise, saving one of the biggest shocks of the night to almost the very end: The Favourite star Olivia Colman upset favorite Glenn Close in the Best Actress category. Less of a shock: Colman gave arguably the best and funniest speech of the night, opening with “It’s genuinely quite stressful” and ending by simply exclaiming, “Lady Gaga!”Alfonso Cuarón Continues Hot Streak for Mexican DirectorsAlfonso Cuarón’s win for Best Director means that Mexican directors have won the category five times since 2014: Alejandro González Iñárritu for Birdman and The Revenant, Guillermo del Toro for The Shape of Water, and Cuarón for Gravity and, now, Roma.Green Book (2018) 77% Beats Out Favorite Roma to Win Best PictureIf the Best Actress win was one of the biggest wins of the night, it’s closest competition was in the Best Picture category, where Green Book won ahead of favorite Roma. Some pundits had a feeling this could happen, particularly given the Oscars’ preferential voting system, but it was inconceivable to others that any film could stand in the way of Cuarón s masterpiece. When the Emmy nominations are announced on Tuesday, July 16, there are some names and series that will definitely be on the list: Game of Thrones, Veep, and Chernobyl (and plenty more series and miniseries from other networks) are among the frontrunners. But in a world where around 500 scripted series are set to air in 2019, there s a lot of excellent TV out there that will unfortunately not be recognized by the Television Academy.The Rotten Tomatoes staff wanted to make sure to recognize some of our favorite series and stars that might not necessarily receive a nod come Tuesday, so read on for our list of Emmy underdogs we re rooting for.Superstore 93%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesOver the last four years Superstore has quietly established itself as one of network televisions’ best offerings. It’s the rare show that can successfully tackle a wide-array of hot-button issues — from identity politics to immigration and every robot-trying-to-take-our-jobs in-between — while consistently providing full-belly laughs. The season four finale alone is a masterclass in finding levity in impossible situations. It also features one of TV s most exceptional (and insanely-likeable) ensembles, who vibe so well off of one another that it brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “work family.” It’s smart, insightful, ridiculously funny, and absolutely worthy of awards consideration. – Haña Lucero-ColinBroad City 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesBelieve it or not, Comedy Central’s ode to female friendship from Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson has never been nominated for an Emmy, despite its critical success — four of its five seasons are Certified Fresh at 100% on the Tomatometer (and the first is CF at a not-too-shabby 96%). Broad City has paved the way for plenty of female-fronted comedies currently on TV, like Hulu’s PEN15, Netflix s animated Tuca Bertie, and Pop TV’s just-premiered Florida Girls — so honoring the groundbreaking sitcom in its fifth and final season would be a fitting end for the series. – Jean BentleyTuca & Bertie 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesTuca Bertie is for those wondering how their lives will go on after the end of Broad City. Creator Lisa Hanawalt’s buddy comedy goes to some pretty heavy places, but with a more surreal and absurdist bent. There’s an array of talented actors voicing the supporting characters (Steven Yeun! Richard E. Grant! Isabella Rossellini!), but Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish really bring the endearing, sloppy charm of these characters to life. An Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance nom for either would be awesome, but the show’s adult themes and newness probably won’t work in its favor. – Sara AtaiiyanOne Day at a Time 99%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesTalk about a Cinderella story. Imagine this: The critically acclaimed sitcom reboot that Netflix axed following its third season, but which — after a long fan campaign — was saved by Pop, takes home the Emmy for Best Comedy. Gods, wherever you are: Make it happen. It would be a miracle of course, but it would be a well-deserved one. One Day at A Time, created by Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce and executive produced by Norman Lear, has shown that the multi-camera sitcom can still be hilarious, heartfelt, and just as edgy as many of the rougher-edged comedies on streaming and cable. The setup is simple — a working-class Cuban-American family lives in an apartment building where they are friendly with their hipster landlord — but the character arcs and writing are anything but. Watch how skillfully the showrunners blend complex narratives about immigration and gentrification into the laughs, and how organically season-long storylines coalesce. It’s smart, underappreciated stuff. As are the performances, particularly from Justina Machado as the mother trying to keep everything together and Rita Moreno as the scene-stealing live-in grandma, Lydia. – Joel MearesBoJack Horseman 93%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesSeason 5 gave Bojack his Horseman-aissance after being cast in an edgy TV show. We also got a deeper look at supporting characters Diane, Princess Carolyn, and everyone’s favorite asexual, Todd. Maybe it’s because of and not despite the fact that it’s a cartoon that allows the series to deal so astutely with questions about what it means to be person who’s trying to be better, and the #MeToo movement. – AtaiiyanFleabag 100%, Outstanding Comedy SeriesPhoebe Waller-Bridge is seemingly a lock for a comedy actress nomination, but with the comedy series category overstuffed with hilarious options, we’re unsure if this member of our exclusive 100% club is an underdog or a frontrunner. Look at the contenders: Veep, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Barry, The Kominsky Method, The Good Place, GLOW, Russian Doll, black-ish, Schitt s Creek, Better Things, and on. What’s a Fleabag got to do to get some recognition around here? – Debbie DayThe Good Fight 95%, Outstanding Drama SeriesThis tight and punchy spin-off to The Good Wife is the single best reason to subscribe to CBS All Access (and there are a bunch of very good reasons its competing against, with The Twilight Zone and Star Trek: Discovery available on the streaming service). The super-smart and sometimes surreal legal drama offers fascinating cases — many of which touch on “big issues” in tech and politics in small and intimate ways — and a compelling crew to tackle them. Chief among that crew is Diane Lockhart (played by Christine Baranski, who deserves her Emmy, now!), who featured in The Good Wife, and she’s well-matched by rising star and new mom Lucca Quinn (Cush Jumbo), senior partner Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo), and the scandal-hounded young Maia Rindell (Rose Leslie), who’s taken a liking to Fentanyl lollipops in season 3. The Good Fight deserves its nomination not just for being the smartest legal drama out there, but for being one of the few shows on TV right now to grapple with — and laugh at — some of the meatiest issues in American politics, law, and society. – MearesBusy Tonight , Outstanding Variety Talk SeriesBusy Philipps translated her personable, intimate online presence into a TV show that felt more like eavesdropping on friends hanging out than a traditional late-night series, which made Busy Tonight’s untimely cancellation sting a little bit more. The actress proved to be both a likable and skilled host, and her accomplishments deserve to be recognized. – BentleyEmmy Rossum, Shameless 82%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy SeriesFor years Emmy Rossum has been turning in some of the best work of her expansive career on Shameless, and for years the TV Academy has been ignoring her in favor of William H. Macy’s much showier role as the deadbeat patriarch of a large Chicago family. But Rossum’s performance as the eldest child keeping her siblings together as they struggle to keep their heads above water is at times hilarious and heartbreaking, and what better way to repent for their years of ignorance than by the Academy recognizing her work in her final season on the show? – BentleyCatherine O’Hara, Schitt's Creek 93%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy SeriesCatherine O’Hara has never won an Emmy award for acting, and that, in and of itself, is criminal. O’Hara, who currently stars as matriarch Moira Rose on Canadian Pop TV sensation Schitt’s Creek is as good as it gets. Schitt’s Creek itself deserves all the awards. From the writing to the acting to hair and makeup, the series is genuinely one of the greatest shows to ever hit the small screen, but what O’Hara brings to Moira makes the character so special and the actress so deserving. She has given an unlikable person a depth and a growth that is unseen in on television today. She is eccentric, she is quick-witted, she is wearing a fabulous wig, and she truly deserves to be in the conversation for best actress in a comedy series. – Zoey MooreSuranne Jones, Gentleman Jack 90%, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama SeriesNot content to simply act the role, Gentleman Jack star Suranne Jones paints her worldly, outsider character, Anne Lister, with bold strokes into otherwise placid scenes of lush 19th–century West Yorkshire, England. When she takes on local graft, she bares her teeth with such palpable menace that in her more vulnerable moments — as when she confronts a skittish lover — her tears break hearts. But in a category stuffed with meaty dramatic roles performed by names more familiar to voters, Jones, like her Lister, seems an upstart with an uncertain fate. – DayStephan James, Homecoming 78%, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama SeriesSam Esmail’s Homecoming was one of the best reviewed series of 2018, and it’s not hard to see why. This taut adaptation of the beloved narrative podcast played out like 11 little shots of Hitchcock — a slow burn that caught fire as the story evolved, back and forth through time, with twists upon twists and some of the finest performances of the year. Julia Roberts has been rightly lauded for her put-upon Heidi Bergman, and Bobby Cannavale gives excellent Cannavalian obnoxiousness as Colin Belfast. But Stephan James, as military veteran Walter Cruz, gives what could be a pretty cold affair its warmth and heart and makes that final diner scene so damn devastating. – MearesAnnie Murphy, Schitt's Creek 93%, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy SeriesYes, Twitter, we know, and we agree: Catherine O’Hara is everything in Schitt’s Creek, and the fact that she doesn’t have four Emmys on a shelf somewhere right next to a collection of Moira Rose wigs is some sort of crime against comedy. But let’s shine equal light on Annie Murphy, who plays the younger socialite-in-the-sticks, Alexis Rose, in the Canadian series. It’s the less showy role — no wigs, no accent — but it’s also stealthily a bit of genius. Murphy plays a ditzy rich girl mid-awakening and every season her characterization deepens. She still gets to nail those insane Alexis lines alluding to a wild past of kidnappings, engagements, and foreign dignitaries, and put out the occasional puppy-dog whine. But she’s also increasingly real, grounded, drawing us into her increasingly tender relationships with her family and Ted. David, giver her an Emmy nom, like, now! – MearesLike this? Though Johnson won t appear in the forthcoming Fast Furious 9, he and former series villain Jason Statham headline this week s Hobbs Shaw, the first spinoff of the franchise, which hopes to deliver the same kinds of high-octane thrills that have characterized the past few films. Vanessa Kirby joins the gang as a rogue MI6 agent on the run from a genetically cyber-enhanced would-be supervillain in the form of Idris Elba, and it s up to Johnson s Luke Hobbs and Statham s Deckard Shaw to put their differences aside in order to save the agent and neutralize the threat. It s pretty standard stuff, as far as globetrotting action blockbusters go, but critics say Hobbs Shaw benefits from the easy chemistry between its leads, who play off each other with fairly effective comedic timing, and a strong turn from Kirby, who gets plenty of her own chances to shine. All that said, the film is patently ridiculous, and some critics found elements of it a bit too far over-the-top, even for a Fast Furious movie. But when you come to one of these, you know what you re in for, and Hobbs Shaw more or less delivers exactly that.
