It s an eye-popping theater experience, to be sure, and if that s what you re looking for, Alita delivers enough entertainment value to keep you in your seat. Just don t expect to be blown away or even particularly engaged by its story.

The name highlights one of our favorite moments from the newest season 8 episode of HBO s Game of Thrones, which aired on Sunday night.1. “I’ll Get Right On It” (More Than You Know, Gendry)(Photo by HBO)We’ve seen a bit of this in the trailer. Arya (Maisie Williams) says, “I know Death. He’s got many faces. I look forward to seeing this one.” What we didn’t know is that she was showing off in front of Gendry (Joe Dempsie).Persuading him to stop trying to convince her not to fight, Arya starts throwing daggers at a post. They land in a staggeringly perfect formation, and Gendry – well, if he wasn’t aroused by her presence before, he’s clearly sputtering over this display. So no, Arya’s whole “I know Death” speech wasn’t the highlight here. The highlight was Gendry’s worshipful response.2. “How Do You Know There Is an ‘Afterwards’”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) apologizes to Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) for trying to murder him. Bran gets it, though: The Fates had their way so that Bran could be this all-seeing wizard of uncomfortable stares. Jaime appreciates that Bran didn’t rat him out for that tower push, but what’s next? Bran will not confirm or deny that there is an afterwards. And for that, we think he’s being a bit of an asshole – the conversation was a highlight, but Bran is being a bit of a dick (more on that later).3. “What Happens Afterwards?”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)There’s that word again, but let’s give a nod first to the scene in which Ser Jorah (Iain Glen) stands up for Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and, it becomes apparent, suggests that Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) make nice with Sansa (Sophie Turner). Daenerys takes his advice. She visits Sansa, is surprised by Lord Royce’s (Rupert Vansittart) respectful greeting, and has that awkward “I’m going to try diplomacy” smile on her face – it makes everyone uncomfortable, but then Sansa, truthspeaker, diffuses that weirdness by telling Daenerys that she was as mistaken about Cersei’s true intentions as Tyrion was. (Deflect blame much, Dany?) Daenerys likes it when people are honest, so a point to Sansa. Then, Daenerys notes how Jon Snow (Kit Harington) has derailed her own plans to take the Iron Throne. She loves him, she says. Point to Daenerys. But, really, who’s keeping score? Daenerys and Sansa are having a real moment – kicking and screaming inside probably, but real.4. “I Want to Fight for Winterfell  Lady Sansa”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Give it up for Theon (Alfie Allen), showing what repentance means (and that Sansa has some power in the room with the queen). Sansa is clearly moved by seeing her father’s former ward again – man parts or no.5. “My little Crow”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Jon’s reunion with Edd (Ben Crompton), Tormund (Kristofer Hivju), and Beric (Richard Dormer) is like a little amuse-bouche before the war. Tormund: “The big woman still here?” Yes, Tormund, the big woman is here. Will they consummate their thing?6. “I Don’t Know – No One’s Ever Tried”(Photo by HBO)So, the meeting of all of the principal characters (minus Cersei and Euron) at Winterfell had a few spectacular moments within it.First, “He’s tried many times with many Three-Eyed Ravens.” The “many Three-Eyed Ravens” part is baffling: This is a position that needs to be filled every few thousand years? I thought I’d read my histories, but the idea of “many Three-Eyed Ravens” is news to me. And Bran doesn t know because no one s ever tried ? Is the Three-Eyed Raven only seeing the past these days?Daenerys follows Ser Jorah’s advice and publicly declares her faith in and need for Tyrion. Haven’t we all felt like Tyrion at some point in our careers? Sometimes you just need a little PDA to make everything right.Theon steps up with a pseudo-apology to Bran, telling him he took the castle from him, so now he’s willing to face the Night King with Bran to make amends. Good luck with that, Theon. (We have the sinking feeling that we’re about to get a lesson in just deserts.)“We’re all going to die,” Tormund says, which gives voice to that sinking feeling. “But,” he says casting a glance over at his lady love, Brienne, “at least we die together.” New world order question: Tormund’s behavior is “creepy,” not “romantic”? I try to put myself in Brienne’s shoes – they’re big, that’s all I have to say.Finally, Tyrion insisting that Bran tell him his story is hilarious: “If only we were trapped in a castle, in the middle of winter with nowhere to go.” Tyrion surely knows that Bran may not make it – clearly Tyrion is thinking about his future book deal.7. “Do You Want to Grow Old in This Place?”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)A friend summed up the black experience in the Seven Kingdoms: “Can we talk about Winterfell s reaction to black folks comin up in there!!?!” Though I feel Grey Worm’s (Jacob Anderson) intent when he asks Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) if she wants “to grow old in this place” and then also  her wish to see Naath again, I also kind of feel like the Seven Kingdoms needs to be integrated. I wish she might have said something along the lines of I think we need to bring Naath to the Seven Kingdoms. Too bad about those dead wights walking.We need a vacation in Dorne to remind us what multiculturalism is. (Here’s hoping the prequel mixes it up lots more.)8. “And Now Our Watch Begins”Jon and Sam are on the ramparts having a – Wait, what? Where the hell did Ghost come from? Don’t try to distract us with clever dialogue from Edd. A direwolf just magicked up in here at Winterfell! That was a reunion we were waiting for, and it occurred off screen? Was there an online short we missed? A Ghost s Journey ?#GameofThrones Ghost showing up in this episode like pic.twitter.com/GWLD8lbamu TAMARA (@Bts_ARMYXOXOX) April 22, 20199. “We’re Probably Going to Die Soon”(Photo by HBO)“Seduced” may be a strong word to describe how Arya asked Gendry to have sex. She kind of insists that he service her before they maybe possibly die because of his shoddy blacksmithing skills on her new spear. Kidding. Honestly, it was a powerful female moment: She stated the facts plainly (they may all die) and said what she wanted (to have sex before that happens). He was free to participate or go on his way. And that is what consent looks like, folks.10. “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”(Photo by HBO)This episode has been a lovefest between Jaime and Brienne. She vouched for him when the council would have tossed him out, imprisoned him, or straight-up executed him. He scored points with viewers in telling her, “I’ll be honored to serve under your command – if you’ll have me.” Then later – facing an uncertain night with a dead foe – he gets into his cups and knights her. Brienne’s moist eyes reflected all of us in that moment. (If not you, then you have a black heart and only watch for boobs and zombies.)Pod – maker of sympathetic faces, singer of songs. ♥ him! Tormund – a suckler of teats. We’ll leave that there.“In the name of the Warrior, I charge you to be brave. In the name of the Father, I charge you to be just. In the name of the Mother, I charge you to defend the innocent. Arise, Brienne of Tarth, a knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” Ser Jaime said, dubbing her with a sword.11. “I Wish You Good Fortune, Cousin”The one-on-one Ser Jorah had with little she-bear Lyanna Mormont (Bella Ramsey) went exactly as expected, with him trying to convince the tween Lady of House Mormont to retire to the crypt: “You’re the future of the House.” She, absolutely refusing: “I pledged to fight for the North, and I will fight.”Then, you know, Sam (John Bradley) interrupts to give Ser Jorah his family’s Valyrian steel sword, Heartsbane.12. “My Name – My Real Name – Is Aegon Targaryen”Jon’s in the crypt making brooding look good, when Daenerys comes in. “Who’s that?” she asks. “Mom,” he (essentially) says. He tells her the story of Lyanna and Rhaegar, and Daenerys is not exactly happy to have her lover be another contender for the Iron Throne. But before she can get pissed, horns blow and they dash out and nod to each other on the ramparts before, we assume, dashing off to mount dragons Drogon and Rhaegal.Dracarys, motherf ers. Fans were hoping that the official title might be revealed on April 25 of 2019, during a live-streamed presentation about the film broadcast from the Jamaican villa where Bond author Ian Fleming wrote all the original novels, but that was not the case. Instead, we all had to wait until late August before the official James Bond Twitter account announced that the new entry will be called No Time to Die.The First Trailer is OutThe first trailer for the film dropped on December 4, 2019, and it shows Bond leaping from aqueducts, getting trapped under ice, and withstanding a barrage of gunfire in his bullet-proof, classic Aston Martin DB5. He also faces possible betrayal from Dr. Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux) after settling down with her at the end of Spectre, a (friendly?) rivalry with a fellow 00 agent Nomi (Lashana Lynch), and a dangerous new villain — Rami Malek’s scarred, masked Safin.“History isn’t kind to men who play God,” Bond warns Safin in one of the trailer’s best lines, so it seems safe to assume that the latter s evil plan is quite ambitious and very dangerous.It Has an Official SynopsisThere were very few details about the plot before the trailer came out, and while it hints at a globe-trotting story of betrayal and friends and foes — both new and old — the synopsis explains a little bit more.“In No Time To Die, Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.”Cary Fukunaga is DirectingCary Fukunaga, known for True Detective Season 1, Beasts of No Nation, and Maniac, will direct No Time to Die. Fukunaga, who said that Daniel Craig is his favorite Bond, signed up to direct in September 2018 after original director Danny Boyle left the picture in August, citing “creative differences.” The switch in directors pushed back the film s release date, as it was initially set to come out in November of this year.“I want to make sure that this run of films, which has been fantastic, has a great next chapter and just keeps upping the ante,” Fukunaga said at the event.In addition, Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, Scott Z. How do you make a Disney film that feels dark and edgy, but still has that magic Mouse House feeling? That was the task set out before director Craig Gillespie and stars Emma Stone and Emma Thompson as they prepped to make Cruella, an origin story for the fashionable and evil villain of Disney’s 101 Dalmatians.What they come up with is delighting critics and is surely going to be a hit with audiences: a punk take on The Devil Wears Prada in which sometime designer and full-time thief Estella (Stone) is slowly taken over by her dark side – Cruella – as she grows closer to the fabulous queen of London fashion, the Baroness (Thompson).Ahead of the movie’s release in theaters and on Disney+, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Nikki Novak spoke with Stone and Thompson about the inspirations for their feuding divas, making a film perfect for the big screen, and whether they’d be on board for a Godfather: Part 2-inspired sequel that could also feature Glenn Close. Henry Cavill has replaced the iconic Man of Steel cape with some sleek white locks and a shiny, sharp sword in Netflix s new fantasy series, The Witcher. Based on the popular stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, which spawned the wildly popular video game series, the eight-episode first season follows the story of swordsman-for-hire Geralt of Rivia, whose supernatural skills come in handy for profession: hunting monsters. In the series, the solitary warrior seeks princess-in-exile Ciri (Freya Allan) and runs across sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), who is just discovering her powers at the outset of season 1.As with most recent genre shows of this ilk, comparisons have already been made to Game of Thrones. Netflix has already seen value in their highly-anticipated series and renewed The Witcher for a second season in November. A studio s confidence and noteworthy buzz can work wonders for a fledgling program such as this. But has Netflix s bet paid off? Will The Witcher scratch that White Walker itch? Often in comics, one miniseries or event title leads directly into another comic book series with little or no downtime. And while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier does not intend to pick up any of WandaVision s batons — in fact, it was originally scheduled to bow first — debuting two weeks after that other show s finale offers viewers a little bit of the thrill of picking up the first issue of a follow-up story. That sensation changes as soon as the first episode truly begins and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) reveals a part of what he s been up to for the last few months: fighting dudes like Batroc (Georges St-Pierre) for the U.S. government.So let s catch up with him, James Buchanan Barnes (Sebastian Stan), and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole as we dive into the first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.Spoiler alert: The following reveals details of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode 1, New World Order. Stop here if you have not watched the episode.The Timing Matters(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios)As we go further into Phase 4, the end of Avengers: Endgame becomes an important marker of time. WandaVision takes place mere weeks after the Avengers restored roughly 3 billion people to life. Spider-Man: Far From Home occurs the next summer. Black Widow, as it happens, will apparently occur six years prior to Endgame. And the first Falcon episode establishes that some months have gone by.It appears that distance from everyone coming home will be an important plot point. The economic instability suggested in Wanda s (Elizabeth Olsen) first trip to Westview continues to matter and even seems to be contributing to an as-yet-unspecified political upheaval. To be sure, Sam s difficulty in securing a loan is a mostly separate issue — more on that in a moment — but the tense situation Rhodey (Don Cheadle) and a few other government types keep dancing around seems connected to the sudden (and we assume occasionally fatal) return of everyone who was lost when Thanos first snapped his fingers in Avengers: Infinity War.In terms of those whispered economics, we imagine insurance companies went right to work trying to reclaim any death benefits they paid out in the previous five years. The returned also probably expected to go back to work at jobs that either evaporated or found new hires to fill the vacancies. Of course, there s the individual psychological toll to consider, but the instability people keep telling Sam about is the aggregate of those things and is typically expressed in terms of financial and political unrest. And in this episode, we re only seeing the edges of that picture.Nevertheless, the timing still matters as Far From Home presents a world — or at least certain European cities and New York — more or less recovered. Whatever powder keg the generals at Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) memorial expected to explode in the short term sure hasn t a handful of months later.Or, perhaps, Sam and Bucky were instrumental in preventing it from happening.When Even an Avenger Can t Get a Loan(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios )One interesting element of the episode is seeing just how accustomed Sam became to the privileges of being an Avenger. To be fair, he lost them as soon as he and Steve defied the Sokovia Accords in 2017, but his expectation that his status as a world-saving superhero would make his loan application a breeze is a bit naive. Nevertheless, it is an interesting way for Marvel Studios as a whole to broach a topic like systemic racism.Each dimension of the scene is fascinating to examine, in fact. Beyond Sam s seeming overconfidence, you have the loan officer unsure of Sam s identity (ouch) and his inability to approve the loan because of the bank s rules, which are built against people like Sam and his sister, Sarah (Adepero Oduye). Then you have her understanding that this was the only way their visit to the bank could transpire — a reality Sam has seemingly forgotten thanks to years in the service and his time in a much more egalitarian organization. Then there is that question: was he receiving income from Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) during the time he worked out of the Avengers HQ? And is his current government contracting something he can claim on the application?We ll also step back a bit and note the bank appears to be offering no sort of amnesty for those who were Blipped. Their five years without jobs or income stands against them. Although, we imagine the bank bends that rules in certain situations.But no matter the reasons for Sam and Sarah to walk out of there defeated — or however an individual viewer may regard the scene — it indicates a growing maturity for the Marvel method while feeling like a natural extension of the Captain America film series philosophy. Now, it s finally pointed to a contemporary situation.Bucky Got a Haircut, Found a Date, and Can t Deal With His Guilt(Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/Marvel Studios )This might be kind of shallow, but we re very glad to see Bucky finally did away with his grungy Winter Soldier hair. Yes, there s definitely a psychological advantage to doing so — he can look in the mirror and not see the monster who haunts his nightmares— but on a purely aesthetic level, Bucky is a much more handsome man with a closer-cropped do.We imagine it is something his therapist encouraged him to do, but it s also possible he chose to do it all on his own in the hopes of reclaiming some part of the man he was before he went to the war. The visual similarity to the dashing lad who showed Jenna Coleman around that science expo in Captain American: The First Avenger is striking. But there is also the sharp contrast of this shattered old man hidden just under Bucky s relatively youthful appearance.Although, we ll admit, it is easier to see that 106-year-old man when he and Yori (Ken Takemoto) go to lunch. It is interesting that these scenes (and his therapy session before them) are the first time we ve really seen Bucky try to cope with everything. Sure, he had that period in Wakanda, but note the way that s minimized in this episode. Those handful of scenes in Black Panther and Infinity War are not about a solider and conscripted killer processing 70 years of trauma. And, really, they couldn t be. Now, though, both we and Bucky have the chance to explore it.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Which makes the date Yori gets for him and his guilt-induced nightmare all the more fascinating. In regards to the former, it make for a fascinating contrast with the cocksure kid in The First Avenger. He absolutely fumbles at every turn and she carries that date until he walks out.But, really, Bucky s in no place to date. He has to finish making amends. At the very least, it would resolve his nightmare. But telling Yori the truth may be the hardest thing he will have to do to complete the task. Sure, Yori may think he wants to know that truth, but what will happen when he finds out this man he s befriended is his son s killer? Bucky has a real ease with him — to the point where the first scene at Izzy s plays as though Yori knows Bucky s real identity — and to lose that bond would be a real setback even if the truth is, ultimately, more important.It s a different sort of jeopardy for the Winter Soldier to experience, but it reflects the sort of show Falcon wants to be. We just hope Bucky gets some sport of peace by the time we get to the end of it.The Portents of Trouble(Photo by Marvel Studios)Curiously, though, the first episode resists the temptation to feature Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) or reveal any aspects of his plan. Although, it s pretty easy to imagine the Flag Smashers as a nascent Masters of Evil. That group, formed by Zemo s father in early issues of The Avengers comic book, will never use that name in the MCU. But it will be interesting to see if The Falcon and the Winter Soldier attempts to employ one of their better known lineups under a different moniker. As it happens, Flag-Smasher is a singular villain in the pages of Marvel Comics and Erin Kellyman briefly appears in the episode as a female version of that character.Of course, because we re assuming a lot this week, we imagine the Flag Smashers are tied to Zemo. But what if they re not? Their aims may be there own while he stays true to his plans as a lone operative.To a certain extent, Zemo is the most successful MCU villain. He tore the Avengers in half, and although they did reform, they are no longer the imperial force he saw when Sokovia fell. But considering the views we ve heard him espouse in trailers, moving his brilliance to ending superheroes entirely could lead to a number of broken costumed folk.Then there s that counterfeit Captain America (Wyatt Russell). Fans of the comics will recognize U.S. Agent on the spot, but we ll hold off on examining him and his comic book counterpart until next week when, presumably, we ll know more about his status in the MCU and what he does to inspire Sam s desire to retake the shield.But for all these uncertainties, at least Sam and Bucky will have allies in the coming fight thanks to people like Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp) and First Lieutenant Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), a kid in the army who may have a fascinating destiny as the series wears on.The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres new episodes on Fridays on Disney+.

As part of the series, three emerging filmmakers will receive mentorship from producer Will Packer, and their films are available to watch on Rotten Tomatoes, MovieClips Indie Channel, Peacock, and the NBC App.In Twice As Good, from Brooklyn-based filmmaker Kristian King, a high school over-achiever is in a nerve-racking dilemma: It’s College Decision Day, expectations are high, and she’s harboring a weighty secret that could disappoint the family, friends, and teachers who believe in her. (And we mean really believe in her: one teacher regularly bakes her pastries.)Ann Pearson is the over-achiever in question, a valedictorian whose every moment of every day seems marked by a push for perfection. We see papers stamped with A++ and rows of shining trophies. The film’s first spoken words are, in fact, “Perfect as always,” said by Ann’s mom, a lawyer, as her daughter dishes up a flawless omelet for breakfast. The pressure Ann feels to never show a crack – even though she knows one is coming – generates suspense in a story that its creator says shows a different side of Black life in America.“I’ve always been interested in Black stories that explore beyond the stereotypes,” King says. “I grew up in the suburbs amongst high achievers and with a mom who values education. But there’s another side to it, which is that it can be hard to figure out what you want and what you want to do.”Twice As Good is a mirror of King’s own story: She was on the “med school path” studying biology at Duke before discovering her love of film, which put her in her own dilemma – how to tell her parents she no longer wanted to be a doctor. She channeled that experience into the character of Ann. “I wanted to see that portrayed in a Black character,” King says. “I wanted to see someone who is a perfectionist, and had everything right, and really was driven and focused and yet was carrying this huge secret inside of her.”King expertly captures that pressure, aided by a star turn by Sojourner Brown as Ann, and delivers a film deeply relatable to its creator and ultimately moving to those who see it.See more shorts and meet more filmmakers from the Scene in Color Film Series.
