Aaron/©New Line Cinema)Assessments of Anderson s career are full of backhanded compliments and hyperbolic criticisms, and they never bother to discuss his 25-year history of casting diverse groups of actors and his willingness to think outside the box. It feels strange to compliment someone for doing what’s right, but in 2020, it’s still rare to see such inclusive casts. It took the beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe a full decade to unleash Black Panther and Captain Marvel while they built their brand with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, Ant-Man, and Doctor Strange. Compare that to Anderson, who, in 1995, dared to cast Robin Shou as the savior of the world in Mortal Kombat and, in 1997’s Event Horizon, gave Laurence Fishburne some all-timer dialogue (“We’re leaving”) as the captain who fights back against a spaceship from hell.In 2005, AVP Alien vs. Predator saw Sanaa Lathan become an honorary Yautja hunter, or Predator, after she kills a Xenomorph and helps rid the world of a justifiably pissed off Alien Queen. In fact, before Jordan Peele’s Us opened with million dollars, it was AVP that held the record for the highest opening weekend for a movie led by a black woman. That’s an impressive accomplishment, and when talking about her character Alexa Woods, Lathan said, “In 1979, Alien came out and Sigourney (Weaver) was in it with a bunch of guys, and nobody at that time expected the woman to be the hero, so that was a tradition that Alien started. The two first teamed up for the 2002 sleeper hit Resident Evil, which led to an 18-year collaboration (and an ongoing 11-year marriage) that saw the six Resident Evil movies collectively grossing over billion worldwide. If you ve listened to the Blu-ray commentaries and read various interviews, it’s clear Jovovich and Anderson have worked closely during their collaborations, and their teamwork has created some all-time movie moments (yeah, we said it). In an interview with Thrillist, Anderson said he had to fight to cast Jovovich over a male star because she was “a strong female lead back in the day when that was absolutely not acceptable in mainstream Hollywood movies.” Within the Resident Evil franchise, Alice has saved the world, wiped out gigantic creatures, and joined forces with Ali Larter, Oded Fehr, Li Bingbing, Colin Salmon, Michelle Rodriguez, and Boris Kodjoe.Anderson’s adherence to female-fronted action franchises and diverse casting are evident again in his upcoming 2021 film Monster Hunter, another video game adaptation that features Jovovich and international action superstar Tony Jaa. As a fan of Ong-Bak and Triple Threat, it s thrilling to see Jaa on the poster of a major international release.Listen, it’s a shame that a director hiring a diverse cast is rare enough that we applaud it when it happens, but one look at the history of Hollywood reveals why Paul W.S. Anderson stands out in that respect.HE KNOWS HOW TO STAGE UNIQUE FIGHT SCENESDo yourself a favor and rewatch the nearly 10-minute final fight between Liu Kang (Robin Shou) and Shang Tsung (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa). It showcases the actor s martial arts skills, and the scene isn’t edited into oblivion as they trade up to 12 strikes before a cut. Shou helped choreograph the fight, and he worked with stunt icons Pat E. Johnson (The Karate Kid, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), J.J. Perry (Warrior, Captain America: Civil War, Haywire), and Jeff Imada (They Live, The Bourne Ultimatum) to create some iconic battles throughout the film.It’s clear that Anderson learned a lot on the set of Mortal Kombat, as he and his various production designers over the years have built sets around the fight choreography to make them unique. In AVP, Soldier, Resident Evil: Afterlife, and The Three Musketeers, the fight scenes blend seamlessly into the surrounding environments in fantastic action set-pieces. The bathroom fight between Alice (Jovovich), Claire Redfield (Larter), and the executioner, a hulking monstrosity who loves body piercings and wields a massive axe, is an ambitious spectacle. Shot with a Phantom Camera and James Cameron’s Avatar 3D rig, the battle makes the most of its setting, as it erupts into a shower of exploding porcelain, tile, and broken pipes. Does it rely a little heavily on the slow-mo? Sure, but setup is simple, the action is economical, the result is satisfying, and we even get a wall flip and a superhero landing. Part of what makes it work is that Larter and Jovovich did most of their stunts, which only adds an extra layer of badassery.When Anderson doesn’t have the luxury of a Robin Shou, Jason Statham, or Milla Jovovich to bust heads, he has no problem getting creative. While filming Mortal Kombat, Anderson was fully aware that Goro, the four-armed behemoth from the video games, could barely move, as the beautiful looking 10-foot tall animatronic created by the legendary Tom Woodruff Jr. (who worked with Anderson again in AVP) was basically a glorified lawn ornament. Knowing the fight scene would be cumbersome and ineffective if played seriously, he had Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby) hit Goro with a low blow (the close-up of his bulging eyes is admittedly cheesy), kick him into a pit, and throw in an Easter Egg for fun. When life hands you a beautiful animatronic lemon, have some fun with it and make some fan-service lemonade.HE MAKES EFFICIENT USE OF SMART PRODUCTION DESIGN AND PRACTICAL EFFECTS(Photo by ©New Line Cinema courtesy Everett Collection)In 1995, Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times wrote that, as impressive as the special effects are at every turn, even more crucial is Jonathan Carlson s superb, imaginative production design, which combines Thailand exteriors with vast sets that recall the barbaric grandeur of exotic old movie palaces and campy Maria Montez epics.” Very early on in Anderson’s career, he realized that inspired production design and practical effects could make movies look much more expensive than their budgets. In his relatively lower-budget films like Mortal Kombat ( million), Resident Evil ( million), and Death Race ( million), it helped to utilize exotic exterior shots and settings to help limit the number of extras, locations, and set builds.There’s a moment in the 2008 film Death Race when a massive big rig called The Dreadnought smashes into a spiked barricade and explodes. In an interview with Grantland, Anderson explained, “We crashed that truck for real, and it was an awesome thing to shoot, because it’s 10 tons of steel flying, traveling really fast, hitting a dead stop, and flying through the air.” It’s one of the best examples of Anderson making the most of his budget. He and producer Jeremy Bolt realized early on that their million budget wouldn t allow them to shoot around the world, so they settled on industrial areas in Montreal to stand in for the film s island, where the prison races take place. With the money they saved, production designer Paul Austerberry (who also worked with Anderson on The Three Musketeers and Pompeii and would go on to win an Oscar for his work on Guillermo del Toro s The Shape of Water) and stunt coordinator Andy Gill (Bad Boys II, Pearl Harbor) focused on procuring real cars, generating real explosions and, of course, obliterating an 18-wheel Dreadnought. Anderson was also able to bring in some A-list talent, like Tyrese Gibson, Ian McShane, and three-time Academy Award nominee Joan Allen, who classed up the production.Anderson’s most beautiful creation comes in the 1997 horror spectacle Event Horizon. The haunted house in space -themed film focuses on a search and rescue team who fall prey to a ship that has returned from a Hell-like dimension with a malevolent spirit on board. The massive gravity drive at the ship s core was built by production designer Joseph Bennett on the cavernous James Bond stage in England’s Pinewood Studios, and it actually worked (the part that spun on cue, that is; not the part that opened a wormhole to Hell). Emboldened by a gigantic million budget, Anderson cherry-picked elements from the best of the genre, peppering in visual references to films like Solaris, Alien, and 2001: A Space Odyssey.The film is arguably most famous for its images of torture and depravity, which Anderson conceived after researching the paintings of Hieronymous Bosch and Pieter Bruegal. But he understood the importance of showing only just enough, and the few frames of mayhem we do get in the film have inspired a sort of cult fascination among horror hounds. These scenes feature grotesque, Clive Barker-inspired practical makeup; hit pause at the right moment, and you ll see the gnarly, bloody gags the special effects department clearly spent a lot of time to create. The film s practical effects and massive sets still hold up to this day, and it s one of the reasons we agree when Laurence Fishburne s Captain Miller says, “I will take the Lewis and Clark to a safe distance, and then I will launch TAC missiles at the Event Horizon until I m satisfied she s vaporized. Aaron/©New Line Cinema courtesy Everett Collection)The 47% Tomatometer score for Mortal Kombat is the highest of Anderson’s 11 theatrically released films since 1995; none of his movies even comes close to Fresh. Writers frequently offer only the faintest of praise for his body of work, and begrudgingly at that, as they use terms like “unusual genius” or say that  there are a few, ahem, gems lying around his filmography. Nobody seems willing to admit that the laser scene in Resident Evil is meant to be funny, or that “Grid” the Xenomorph from Alien vs. Predator might be the deadliest alien in the franchise. The narrative has been set since 1995, and the reviews now write themselves, despite the fact the critics might have failed Anderson, at least according to some.But even though the average Tomatometer score for his 11 theatrically released movies is a super Rotten 27%, there are still plenty of Fresh moments in his filmography. Even his lowest-rated film, the curious Blade Runner-sidequel Soldier (12% on the Tomatometer), features a jacked-up Kurt Russell battling Jason Scott Lee in a thrilling final fight that s so intense you almost feel the exhaustion by the end of it. Anderson also isn t without his defenders; James Cameron loves Resident Evil, Quentin Tarantino included The Three Musketeers on his Best of 2011 list, and prolific film critic Ignatiy Vishnevetsky considers Anderson to be the “world’s least pretentious auteur who makes lively, unpretentious mid-budget genre movies fixated on video-gamey cool and distinguished by their leanness and their inventive — and sometimes even poetic — use of space.”The success of Mortal Kombat wasn’t a fluke because Anderson and his talented crew knew what they were making, and they made it earnestly. Ashby, who contributed to the script in addition to playing Johnny Cage, said, We didn’t write Hamlet or anything, but we had fun with it. That playfulness is all over the movie, and it s still refreshing today.INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCES LOVE HIS MOVIES(Photo by R.E. The million domestic haul was impressive for the scrappy video game adaptation, but the 100+ million distinction is what gave it major credibility. This trend of solid global returns has become a staple for Anderson, who has realized for a long time that focusing on worldwide returns and thinking globally will keep him working well into the future.In 2017, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter “rocked” China with a .4 million debut, which is remarkable considering China doesn’t allow ghosts and the supernatural to be shown on screen (with some exceptions). After its worldwide theatrical run had ended, box office receipts showed that it made 91% of its money overseas, with 5 million of its 2 million worldwide haul made outside the United States. This topped the 82% of Resident Evil: Retribution and the 80% of Resident Evil: Afterlife, which also set records internationally. In other words, the Resident Evil movies were global event films; in Japan, The Final Chapter made almost as much money as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which was released just a week earlier. Closer to home, 2014 s Pompeii managed to become the highest-grossing Canadian production of the year, despite less than explosive box office returns here in the U.S., and it became the fourth film directed by Anderson to win the Golden Screen Award.Paul W.S. Anderson has been thrilling audiences around the world for 25 years, and it all began with a silly, action-packed video game adaptation that blossomed into a nostalgic fan favorite. Since then, Anderson has consistently worked with diverse casts and talented craftsmen on limited budgets to produce eye-popping, undemanding entertainment, and his filmography is littered with sleeper cult classics like Event Horizon, Alien vs. Predator, the Resident Evil franchise, and yes, Mortal Kombat. In most interviews, he seems comfortable with his career, and he should be; he knows what his fans want, and he delivers, even if he s not a critical darling. Between the hybrid release controversies of the summer and the continued lack of attendance for non-IP originals, particularly those aimed at adults, it is still anyone’s guess what we are headed for come the holiday movie season. Barring the return of some new surge of virus infections (at least those numbers are headed in the right direction) people will hopefully feel safer filling seats at their local theaters. They certainly had a choice this weekend between staying home and buying a ticket. The latter won for one film while the former created some dismal numbers for another, casting a shadow over anything not part of a franchise the rest of the year.King of the Crop: Halloween Kills its Hybrid Release with million Debut(Photo by Universal Pictures)Before the pandemic, the focus on this weekend’s #1 movie would have been the drop from its predecessor’s million start in 2018. Halloween Kills’ million weekend is a 33.8% drop from three years ago, but even that can be put in a positive perspective looking at other sequel drops of this stature over the years. Among R-rated sequels to films opening over million, 300: Rise of an Empire (36.4%), Ted 2 (38.4%), Paranormal Activity 4 (44.8%), Sex and the City 2 (45.6%), The Matrix Revolutions (47.1%), and The Hangover Part III (51.5%) all dropped further. Alien: Covenant fell 29.1% from Prometheus but didn’t have nearly as far to fall as Halloween Kills did, leaving It: Chapter 2 (26.2%) and Deadpool 2 (5.23%) as the higher standards. The point is that this is a really terrific number for David Gordon Green’s sequel..4 million is the sixth-best opening of the pandemic. As it marks the third consecutive week of a film opening over million, that statistic may quickly become an afterthought, though it shouldn’t. Where Halloween Kills busted the ceiling this weekend was in the hybrid streaming wars. After it was announced the film would simultaneously premiere on the Peacock service the same day it premiered in theaters, its chances for widespread theatrical success appeared to be kneecapped. The first film was a rather frontloaded success story, posting just a 2.09 multiple over its opening weekend. Halloween Kills may be down 34% from the 2018 opening, but it is up 58% from the year’s best hybrid HBO MAX openings, with Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy each in the million realm. Kong already had a two-day head start with .4 million prior to the weekend and to date is the only hybrid release (sans an additional fee) to crack the 0 million barrier. And that was a March 31 release that took over 11 weeks to reach that milestone. Halloween Kills is already halfway there in just three days.Kills also nearly doubled up The Suicide Squad (.2 million) for the best “R”-rated opening of the year in any release strategy. 54 million Peacock subscribers at last count compared to roughly 73 million for HBO MAX. (And those are late July numbers.) The five biggest WB/HBO MAX openings dropped like flies in their second weekends Godzilla vs. Kong (56.9%), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (57.1%), Space Jam: A New Legacy (69.1%), The Suicide Squad (71.5%), and Mortal Kombat (73.2%). 2018’s Halloween fell 58.8% to .4 million in weekend two, so there’s a good chance Kills falls below million next weekend, especially if people realize they actually have Peacock on their cable service. Those who actually still have cable service.Rotten Returns: Ridley Scott s The Last Duel Reinforces a Grim Trend(Photo by 20th Century Studios)What may actually be the bigger story this weekend is the continuing failure of non-IP films aimed at adults to draw them in. Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel was speculated to at least get into eight-digit territory this weekend. Its fate was all but sealed when it opened to just 0,000 in previews Thursday night, and the final numbers were even worse than imagined. The historical drama with a cast boasting Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck grossed a mere .8 million this weekend. That is less than Damon in Stillwater did this summer (.18 million) and the worst start for a Damon-led film opening in over 3,000 theaters. The previous low was We Bought a Zoo (.36 million), which nevertheless went on to gross over million over its 2011 holiday season release.There is a strong chance that The Last Duel will not even be able to leg itself out enough to outgross All the Pretty Horses (.5 million) or Stillwater (.2 million), leaving it as the third-lowest grossing Damon-led film ahead of only Suburbicon (.77 million) and Promised Land (.59 million), both of which were released in fewer than 2,050 theaters. The story is far grimmer than anything surrounding Damon’s perceived star power, though. The Last Duel represents a continuing trend in the pandemic box office for anything other than a sequel, franchise, universe-builder, or Disneyland ride to break out among audiences. Free Guy, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Old are the only films outside of those categories to gross over million this year. The Last Duel is about to become the third theatrical-exclusive film released this year in over 3,000 theaters that fails to gross even million.The Top 10 and Beyond: No Time to Die Takes Aim at 0 Million(Photo by Nicola Dove/©MGM)No Time To Die missed the opportunity to become the fifth film of the pandemic to gross 0 million in its first 10 days; instead it will take 11. With .3 million this weekend (a 56% drop) the 25th James Bond film is just shy of the milestone. That is a slightly better second weekend than F9 had ( million), though Bond is still nearly million behind its pace while also about million ahead of A Quiet Place Part II’s 10-day run. The film has a good chance to stick around the Top Five into just before Thanksgiving (and could hang on enough into that holiday) so we’ll stick with a final gross between 0-170 million domestically. Globally the film is over 7 million and could actually surpass F9’s 6 million to become the highest-grossing film of the pandemic era.Venom: Let There Be Carnage fell to .5 million (the second-best third weekend of the year), bringing its total to just over 8 million, still on a very solid pace for 0 million. That is about million below Shang-Chi’s third weekend and overall about million behind its 17-day pace. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings drove its total to over 8 million and is going to settle into the 5 million territory, suggesting that the Venom sequel will come in somewhere around the original Venom’s total of 3 million.The Addams Family 2, which is also on VOD for .99, is not far behind the pace of The Boss Baby: Family Business, which was also streaming on Peacock s subscription tiers. That animated film finished with over million. Addams looks to be in line to come in between -55 million. A24’s odd folktale, Lamb, managed to stay put in eighth place, falling from just over million to 3,000 and driving its total to million. Actually theaters and the home service will be showing Dune: Part One, as the opening title card announces it. There is no release date or production start date for Dune: Part Two. Directed by Todd Phillips  (The Hangover, Old School) from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix in a new origin story for the typically origin-less Clown Prince of Crime. It will also be the first of Warner Bros. Pictures’ recent DC Comics-based films to completely eschew the notion of an interconnected film universe. Here is what we know about the project so far. [Updated on 8/28.]Joker Stands AloneDespite Warner Bros’ efforts to create a cohesive film universe for its superheroes and assorted villains, Joker will not be part of the same story continuity as Man of Steel, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, or Shazam!. Instead, it will stand alone as its own separate reality. The concept is not unlike DC Comics’ own Elseworlds brand. Though long discontinued, Elseworlds told remixed superhero stories featuring such concepts as the Waynes finding the infant Kal-El instead of the Kents or Batman as an actual vampire. Though published before Elseworlds became a formalized concept, The Dark Knight Returns was considered one of these tales. In the years since, DC returned to the idea with the “Earth-1” line and “DC Black Label,” which could be a very good name for a line of films separate from the Justice League continuity.Meanwhile, the Joker of that universe, Jared Leto, is developing his own Joker feature film.He Has a Name This Time, And It s Arthur FleckHeath Ledger s Joker was nameless in The Dark Knight (Photo by © Warner Bros. )There might be a punchline embedded in that name, but Joker is dispensing with the mystery surrounding the character’s real name. This sets it apart from previous Joker tales like The Dark Knight and The Killing Joke, the defining Joker comic book story by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland. In each, the character is treated as unknowable – even in The Killing Joke, the extended flashbacks of a failed comedian embarking on a life of crime are later revealed to be unreliable – with his name obscured. In 1989 s Batman, he was given the name “Jack Napier,” which became the character’s real name in comic-book continuity for a time. But in giving Joker this new name, Phillips and Silver boldly announce the movie will not be as ambiguous about the character’s background as The Dark Knight. Which is probably a good idea as The Dark Knight was the definitive screen take on the unknowable, force-of-nature character.In the film, Arthur (Phoenix) will be a “man disregarded by society,” in a story the studio considers both a “gritty character study” and a “broader cautionary tale.” Marc Maron, who also appears in the film, echoed the sentiment when asked about the project, adding that the story is more “intimate” and specific in scope than superhero films he made fun of in the past. Additionally, the studio made clear Arthur is a failed comedian who, through the events of the film, becomes the infamous criminal mastermind. And as the recent trailer suggests, his swing toward crime will come after a rather public humiliation.(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures)According to Maron, Phoenix lost himself in the role, as often seems to happen when actors play the Joker. Prior to Phoenix, Leto made headlines with pranks “perpetrated” by his Joker on the set of Suicide Squad. Heath Ledger’s iconic take on the character was lauded with an Academy Award, but decompressing from the role left him unable to get more than an hour’s sleep in the months leading up to his tragic and untimely death.Maron said Phoenix remained in character between takes. He added that he respected the actor’s process and left him alone to maintain the character.It s a Big Departure for the DirectorIn fact, the “gritty character study” phrase used by the studio has been floating around since the time Phoenix confirmed his participation in the project. According to the actor, part of the film’s appeal is its million “low budget” nature. The modest spend is both a departure from the tentpole sort of films Joker appears in and even the sort of films Phillips makes.The director came to prominence with The Hangover series, which started with a seemingly modest million budget – granted, that figure is on the higher end for comedies of the time – but spending on Hangover films ballooned to 3 million by The Hangover 3. And though Joker appears to be a return to smaller budgets, the subject matter as described in interviews and press releases suggests Phillips will be leaving the zany comedy of Old School or Starsky Hutch (and even the darker tinged action-comedy of War Dogs) behind for something much more contained and potentially serious.Robert De Niro Is Part Of Joker’s New OriginDe Niro in The King of Comedy (Photo by © 20th Century Fox)In the earliest reports on the project, legendary director Martin Scorsese was said to be attached as a producer. The scuttle around that report centered on Scorsese securing the participation of his frequent collaborator Robert De Niro. Though Scorsese’s name is absent from official press releases – in fact, he seems to have been replaced by Phillips’ old Hangover compatriot, Bradley Cooper – De Niro is a confirmed part of the film’s cast. He plays Murray Franklin, a Gotham City talk show host whose callous use of Arthur s stand-up act during an opening monologue will lead Arthur toward his destiny. Many are seeing the casting as an inversion of his role in Scorsese’s 1982 film The King of Comedy, in which he played a man like Arthur who takes a talk show host (Jerry Lewis) hostage.The trailer makes it appear as though Arthur and Murray will come to some accord. A seemingly cordial scene in a dressing room suggests the latter will invite the former onto his show to do a set. Then again, Arthur s request to be introduced as Joker also suggests his appearance may not be as copacetic as it seems. Will Murray make it to the end of that night s show alive?The Wayne Factor, Plus A Deadpool SurpriseOther actors in the film include Deadpool 2’s Zazie Beetz as Sophie Drumond, a cynical a single mother who, as seen in the trailer, connects with Arthur in an unexpected way; American Horror Story’s Frances Conroy as Arthur’s mother Penny; and a wide group of performers including Bill Camp, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.Brett Cullen will also appear as Thomas Wayne, father of Arthur’s eventual nemesis, Bruce Wayne (Cullen also appeared as a congressman in The Dark Knight Rises). According to reports circulating at a time when Alec Baldwin was in early talks to play the part, Wayne will be re-envisioned as a spoiled 1980s land baron. The rather obvious pastiche of a role Baldwin regularly plays on Saturday Night Live may have led to the actor withdrawing from negotiations, though he later said scheduling was the primary cause. From his brief moment in the trailer, it is unclear if Cullen will play this vain version of Thomas, but a wild change to the charitable and caring Wayne patriarch would represent one of the great leaps in DC Comics mythology the film intends to make. It wasn t until this week, however, that we got an idea directly from Bong himself, and the surprising answer is, I would love to make a musical. Bong continued, Characters would begin singing, then think, ‘Oh my God, **** this, this is too cheesy,’ and stop suddenly. There are amazing musical films, like Singin’ in the Rain. But when I watch them, I feel very embarrassed and start blushing. So it would have to be… different. Moving from Parasite to a deconstructed musical wouldn t be the first time Bong Joon-ho has switched genre gears drastically, as his filmography has also included a monster movie (The Host), post-apocalyptic science fiction (Snowpiercer), and most recently before Parasite, an action adventure about a genetically modified pig (Okja).Other Top Headlines1. TOM HOLLAND HINTS HIS THIRD SPIDER-MAN WILL BE ABSOLUTELY INSANE (Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/ © Columbia Pictures)The COVID-19 crisis is obviously causing many film productions to be delayed, but for now, the film industry appears to be sticking to existing plans further out. Tom Holland, for example, is apparently still planning to start filming of his third solo movie as Spider-Man in July. Although we don t yet have an idea of who the villain(s) might be (J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson might be one obvious answer), Holland did describe the third film as absolutely insane, and that Zendaya will be returning as MJ. The movie release schedule is very much still in flux, but Sony Pictures currently has the next Spider-Man scheduled for July 16, 2021.2. PAUL BETTANY JOINS DAVID GORDON GREEN S CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA MOVIE(Photo by Marvel Studios)Although some directors stay rather narrowly within their own personal wheelhouses, others seem quite comfortable with experimenting with a variety of different genres throughout their careers. One example is David Gordon Green, who started with the indie dramas George Washington and All the Real Girls, which then led to the comedies Pineapple Express and Your Highness, and is currently halfway through the horror trilogy of Halloween (Certified Fresh at 79%), Halloween Kills (10/16/2020), and Halloween Ends (10/15/2021). Green will reportedly film Halloween Ends late this year (depending on possible delays), and then move on to an untitled drama about the Cambridge Analytica data mining scandal. Paul Bettany, who later this year will star in the Disney+ series WandaVision, is reportedly now set to star in the project as the company s CEO Alexander Nix. The lead character of Christopher Wylie is still yet to be cast.3. WHAT STEVEN SPIELBERG REALLY WANTS IS FOR VIN DIESEL TO DIRECT (Photo by Universal Pictures)Many successful actors eventually expand into directing their own films, but Vin Diesel is actually a rare example of a movie star who actually directed a feature film before the roles that made him famous. In 1997, Diesel directed the indie drama Strays, which predates Pitch Black by three years and The Iron Giant by two. This week, while promoting Bloodshot (Rotten at 30%), Diesel talked about a recent conversation he had with Steven Spielberg, who reportedly said to Diesel, When I wrote the role for you in Saving Private Ryan, I was obviously employing the actor, but I was also secretly championing the director in you, and you have not directed enough. That is a crime of cinema and you must get back in the directing chair.’ I haven’t directed enough. Vin Diesel didn t give any indication about what sort of movie he might consider directing next.4. JAMIE FOXX TO DIRECT FAITH-BASED DRAMA WHEN WE PRAY (Photo by Warner Bros.)In addition to all of the movies that were recently delayed from release, it s also worth remembering all of the films that were already in release limbo before the coronavirus outbreak even started. Jamie Foxx made his directorial debut with the basketball comedy All-Star Weekend, which was filmed in late 2018, but going into 2020, All-Star Weekend  had not yet secured a distributor in the USA. While the world still waits on his first film, Foxx is now gearing up for his second film as director, which we learned this week will be a faith-based drama called When We Pray. It s unclear if Foxx will also co-star in the film, which will be about two brothers who become pastors at different churches in the same community. The budget of When We Pray is expected to be less than million.5. FINAL DESTINATION 6 DETAILS REVEALED AS ORIGINAL CELEBRATES ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY In addition to being St. Patrick s Day, this Tuesday was sort of dominated by news about the COVID-19 crisis, so even the most avid fans of the Final Destination franchise may have not noticed that the original Final Destination (Rotten at 34%) reached its 20th anniversary on that day. It has also been almost nine years since 2011 release of Final Destination 5 (Fresh at 62%), but screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan are now developing a sixth Final Destination project. Producer Craig Perry revealed this week that their current plan for the next Final Destination is having it take place in the world of first responders: EMTs, firemen and police These people deal with death on the front lines every day, and make choices that can cause people to live or die. Most of the earlier films centered around high school or college students, so it sounds like Final Destination 6 might feature older characters.6. CATS FANS DEMAND TO SEE THE  BUTTHOLE CUT (Photo by Universal Pictures)For a few years now since Justice League (Rotten at 40%) was released in 2017, there has been a #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement asking for Warner Bros. to release the film as it would have been before Joss Whedon filmed reshoots. With that as context, this Tuesday, actor and comedian Seth Rogen live-Tweeted his experience watching Cats while ahem under the influence, at the end of which he retweeted screenwriter Jack Waz, who had himself responded to another Cats-related tweet by Ben Mekler by saying that a VFX producer friend of a friend was hired in November [whose] entire job was to remove CGI buttholes that had been inserted a few months before. Which means that, somewhere out there, there exists a butthole cut of Cats. And this is how ridiculous online movements get started. Within hours, #ReleasetheButtholeCut was trending on Twitter, which led Universal Pictures to respond thusly, Hopefully that will add to the magic and mythical nature of the cinematic treasure. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your perspective), Mekler received an email the next morning from an unidentified VFX artist who explained that there were never any buttholes to begin with, but that there were a dozen or so shots where the skin and fur sim was groomed or just folded in a way that really REALLY looked like very furry lady genitals and buttholes by accident, and that artists were charged with painting them out. Mekler then put out an open invitation to people who worked on Cats to DM him their best stories, so we may still get a juicy piece of Cats lore out of this after all.
This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles like Buck Rogers, Cleopatra, Furiosa, The Others, and Tut.This WEEK S TOP STORYMAD MAX: FURY ROAD PREQUEL LANDS THREE SUPERHERO STARS(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Kristin Callahan, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Director George Miller is getting closer to a filming start date for Furiosa, his prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road (Certified Fresh at 97%), about the life of Charlize Theron s character before she became well, the person she was in Mad Max: Fury Road. Back in March, we first heard that Miller was considering casting Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Emma.) as the younger Furiosa, and this week, that casting was confirmed. In addition to Taylor-Joy (who played Magik in The New Mutants), however, Miller has also cast Australian star Chris Hemsworth (Marvel s Thor, obviously) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who played both Black Manta in Aquaman and Doctor Manhattan in HBO s Watchmen (our apologies if that s a spoiler for a show that aired a year ago). Hemsworth will reportedly play a character called Dementus who has a huge silver scar on his face, and Abdul-Mateen will play a character called Pretorian. Those names seem to confirm that the film will indeed be set in post-apocalyptic times, and not, as some might have guessed, before the end of the world. Tom Hardy is not expected to reprise his role as Mad Max, as his character would be much younger, and also because Max and Furiosa did not seem to know each other before they met in Fury Road. There is no release date yet for Furiosa, but George Miller plans to start filming in 2021, which suggests a date in 2022 or 2023. GAL GADOT TO REUNITE WITH PATTY JENKINS FOR CLEOPATRA (Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, the world still hasn t seen Wonder Woman 1984, the second collaboration between star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins following their work together on the first Wonder Woman (Certified Fresh at 93%). We ve known for a while that Gadot and Jenkins have plans to eventually make a third Wonder Woman movie together, but what we didn t know until this week is that, in the meantime, they will be reuniting for another movie about a heroine with ancient mythologial roots. Gadot is now attached to star in and Patty Jenkins will direct Paramount Pictures  Cleopatra biopic, based on the life of Cleopatra VII, the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Cleopatra has been a favorite epic subject for Hollywood since its earliest days, including Cecil B. DeMille s 1934 film starring Claudette Colbert and the 1963 film starring Elizabeth Taylor. There have been many attempts at Cleopatra biopics over the last several years, including one at Sony Pictures that in the past had both Angelina Jolie and Lady Gaga possibly in talks to star. That Sony project has been in development for over 10 years, and it s not known at this point whether Sony will push forward to compete with the Gal Gadot version, or whether Sony has given up on Cleopatra completely.2. OSCAR-WINNING DIRECTOR OF HAIR LOVE TO ANIMATE LIFE OF KING TUT(Photo by Leon Bennett/Getty Images)Marvel Studios  Black Panther was an milestone for many reasons, but one of them was that it achieved a level of live-action production design and world building that one more usually associates with animation. That style is called afrofuturism, and we re soon going to get a Sony Pictures Animation feature film called Tut, which will interpret the life of young Egyptian pharaoh King Tutankamun through an afrofutristic vision. Tut will be the animated feature film debut of director Matthew A. Cherry, who won the Academy Award this year for Best Animated Short for Hair Love (which you can watch on Facebook right here). Cherry s vision for Tut  will take audiences on a journey through ancient Egypt and celebrate a culture that introduced the world to countless modern conventions and technologies. There is no voice casting news for Tut yet, and given the production time for major animated films, we probably can t expect to see it released until 2023 or later. Matthew A. Cherry will also be producing a 12 episode Hair Love spin-off series for HBO Max called Young Love.3. JOAQUIN PHOENIX GETS GOOD PART AS BONAPARTE IN KITBAG (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Just last week, we learned that 90 year old Clint Eastwood is preparing to direct and star in his next movie Cry Macho, and this week, another director who s nearly as old also announced a major new project. 82-year-old Ridley Scott wrapped filming this week on The Last Duel, starring Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Adam Driver, and then in March, he will start filming Gucci, starring Lady Gaga. And then, after that (at which point he will be 83), Scott will direct Joaquin Phoenix in the epic Napoleon Bonaparte biopic Kitbag. The title reportedly refers to the kitbags carried by soldiers during war, and the expression that there is a general s staff hidden in every soldier s kitbag. The ambitious biopic will reportedly cover Napoleon s, swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. Although Napoleon was a popular subject in Hollywood s earliest years, there hasn t been a major such movie since 1970 s Waterloo (Rotten at 27%), the box office failure of which is often cited as the reason why Stanley Kubrick gave up on his own Napoleon biopic in which Jack Nicholson would have starred.4. SELENA GOMEZ TO STAR IN BLACK SWAN-STYLE THRILLER SET IN FASHION WORLD(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Although Selena Gomez has stayed busy with her music (and the videos that go with it), supporting roles in movies like The Dead Don t Die (Rotten at 54%), and a Woody Allen movie few people have seen, you actually have to go back four years to 2016 and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (Fresh at 64%) to find a movie in which Gomez had a prominent role (and even that was as part of an ensemble). Gomez appears intent on fixing that soon, with this week s new project, and also the recent news that Gomez s voice role in Hotel Transylvania 4 may be larger than we originally thought. Gomez will produce ( and will likely also star) in a psychological horror film for STXfilms called Dollhouse, which is being compared to Black Swan, but set in the fashion world of New York City. Gomez s producing partners on Dollhouse will include Shaun Levy s 21 Laps Entertainment, whose filmography includes Arrival, Fist Fight, Kin, and Ryan Reynolds upcoming action movie Free Guy. (This probably goes without saying, but just to be clear, Selena Gomez s Dollhouse also has nothing to do with the FOX TV series starring Eliza Dushku.)5. SAMMY DAVIS JR. MAY BE FIRST RAT PACK MEMBER TO GET HIS OWN BIOPIC (Photo by Everett Collection)Over the last 20 years or so, there have been a few different attempts to adapt the lives of famous 1950s/1960s Rat Pack members like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin as biopics, but neither ever came to be (though HBO did portray them collectively in 1998 s The Rat Pack, Rotten at 57%). With no active development for biopics about either of those crooners, it s now looking more likely that the first major feature film about the life of a Rat Pack member will instead be about the life of Sammy Davis, Jr.  Lena Waithe (Master of None, Ready Player One) is producing the Sammy Davis, Jr. biopic with MGM, and the screenplay will be adapted from the memoir Sammy Davis Jr: My Father by his daughter Tracey Davis. Sammy Davis Jr. had many personal distinctions, including both African American and Jewish heritage, multiple starring film roles, and several songs that made it to the Top 20 pop charts, including Something s Gotta Give, Love Me or Leave Me, and I ve Got to Be Me (possibly a great title for his biopic?).6. GODZILLA PRODUCERS REBOOTING CLASSIC SCI-FI HERO BUCK ROGERS  (Photo by ©NBC courtesy Everett Collection)We re all so used to science fiction and superheroes that we can easily take it for granted that they ve always been around, but the origins for many genre concepts are relatively new. For example, it was only 92 years ago in 1928 that the sci-fi adventurer Buck Rogers was first introduced (predating Flash Gordon, John Carter of Mars, and thousands of superheroes, including Superman). Although Buck Rogers went on to become a popular 1930s and 1940s comic strip and serial star, the character has been relatively underused ever since, except for the 1979-1981 TV series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (starring Gil Gerard and Erin Gray), which may be well-remembered by Generation X, but probably not by many under 40. After several months of negotiations, Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind recent reboots like Godzilla and Dune, is now in development on a new feature film that would reboot Buck Rogers, focusing on a man who wakes up from centuries of suspended animation 500 years in the future. It s not yet known which version of Buck Rogers will be adapted, including for example, whether the reboot might include characters from the TV show like Twiki the robot and Erin Gray s Wilma Deering. In tangentially related news, Walt Disney Pictures is also now developing a feature film based on the popular theme park attraction Space Mountain.7. SANDRA BULLOCK S ADVENTURE TO THE LOST CITY OF D  (Photo by ©Warner Bros.)It might feel a lot longer ago than 2009, but that was indeed the year that the romantic comedy The Proposal (Rotten at 45%), which as it turned out, was sort of one of the last hurrahs for the romantic comedy genre as a major Hollywood release (they re more common these days on streamers than in major theatrical releases). But when people do eventually go back to movie theaters post-COVID-19, they are still going to want date movies, so it s not at all surprising that some rom-coms are still in development, especially when they re hybrids with other genres. Sandra Bullock will produce and is attached to star in a Paramount Pictures romantic adventure called The Lost City of D, which is being compared to the 1984 classic Romancing the Stone. Although he s not signed, the producers reportedly also hope to recruit Bullock s Proposal co-star Ryan Reynolds to join her in their first movie together since. Sandra Bullock will star as an author who discovers that the fictional city she s written about is actually real, leading her to try to discover its location. The most recent screenplay draft was written by Dana Fox (Isn t It Romantic, Couples Retreat).8. ANIMATED WIZARD OF OZ SPINOFF MOVIE IN THE WORKS FOR DOROTHY S LITTLE DOG TOTO TOO (Photo by Everett Collection)Children s author L. Frank Baum wrote 14 Oz books, but the argument could be made that the amazing success of The Wizard of Oz has left such an overwhelming legacy that the other books were not adapted as frequently (or at all) as they would have been if the 1939 The Wizard of Oz had never existed. (Of course, the Oz would has indeed been revisited, usually as reimaginings like the Broadway musical Wicked, or the R B musical The Wiz.) Warner Animation Group is now developing another film in that vein, as the studio has made a deal with two-time Tony-nominated director Alex Timbers (Moulin Rouge!) to direct their musical adaptation of the book Toto: The Dog-Gone Amazing Story of The Wizard of Oz, which, as the title suggests, is basically the same story but from the perspective of Dorothy s dog. The most recent movie from Warner Animation Group was the prequel Scoob!, which ended up going to VOD because of the pandemic, but the Toto movie is reportedly still fully intended for a theatrical release (given how long animation takes, Toto is still a few years away anyway).9. THE OTHERS IS GETTING A REMAKE(Photo by (c)Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)It seems like most movie remakes come from about 20-30 years earlier for example, the 1980s had lots of 1950s remakes, and the 2000s and 2010s had a lot of remakes from the 1980s. So, as we re now 20 years from the year 2000, we can expect to see remakes of movies from the aughts start to appear, and one such project made the news this week. Universal Pictures is partnering with Sentient Entertainment (TV s Feud: Bette and Joan) to develop a remake of the 2001 supernatural thriller The Others ( Certified Fresh at 83% ), starring Nicole Kidman as a mother struggling to protect her children from a supernatural menace in their home. The original movie was set in England in 1945, but it s possible the remake may have a different setting (possibly modern times, or any other decade). Amazon extends its Tom Clancy Universe this month with the release of Without Remorse, which follows the story of US Navy Seal John Kelly who’s out for vengeance when his pregnant wife is murdered by Russian assassins. The movie stars – and is produced by – Michael B. Jordan, who says he “trained relentlessly” for its combustive action sequences, which were more demanding than even his work in Creed and Black Panther. Jordan also opened up to Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley about stepping into a producer role and his introduction to Clancy’s work via the video game Rainbow Six. Plus, Coley spoke with co-stars Jamie Bell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Lauren London, and director Stefano Sollima about bringing their fresh take on Clancy’s characters to the screen, working with Jordan, and who in the world they’d choose to spy on if given the opportunity.
