To do this, they’ll need a clean shave (lookin’ at you Cap), new haircuts (Hello Hawkeye), and superheroes from every Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to help them. We don’t know what will happen after the dust settles (or reforms into our favorite superheroes), but we do know it will be a colossal conclusion to the successful 10-film third phase of the MCU.In honor of the grand finale to Phase 3, and in preparation for a new wave of heroes taking over, we’ve done a Tomatometer deep dive into the 21 films that make up the three phases of the MCU so far. The result? Eighteen fascinating – we hope! – stats about the MCU, covering every one of the Marvel Studios films released since 2008. Dig in below, and let us know in the comments whether you agree or disagree with the Tomatometer s findings.1. THE AVERAGE TOMATOMETER AND AUDIENCE SCORES FOR THE ENTIRE MCU ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL — JUST 1.7% APART.(Photo by Zade Rosenthal/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Average Audience Score: 82.1% | Average Tomatometer Score: 83.8% The average Audience Score for every film in the MCU is 82.1%, while the average Tomatometer score is 83.8% — so much for pretentious critics! A 1.7% split is almost unheard of with single films at Rotten Tomatoes, let alone when averaging out scores across 21 movies. Critics and fans: Assemble!2. THE IRON MAN, THOR, AND CAPTAIN AMERICA TRILOGIES EACH HAD DIFFERENT TOMATOMETER TRAJECTORIESIron Man (93%) | Iron Man 3 (79%) | Iron Man 2 (73%)Thor: Ragnarok (92%) | Thor (77%) | Thor: The Dark World (67%)Captain America: Civil War (91%) | Captain America: Winter Soldier (90%) | Captain America: The First Avenger (80%)It’s fitting that franchises featuring playboy billionaires, Asgardian gods, and a clean-cut super soldier would have Tomatometer trajectories as distinct as their titular heroes. The Iron Man trilogy started super Fresh (93%) and its sequels couldn’t recapture the first installment s glory, whereas Thor and Captain America finished very strong (91%, 92%) with the highest Tomatometer-rated movies in their trilogies. Only Captain America avoided a sophomore slump with Captain America: Winter Soldier (90%), while Thor: Ragnarok (92%) totally redeemed its franchise by making a 25% improvement after the near-Rotten Thor: The Dark World (67%).3. BLACK PANTHER IS THE TOMATOMETER KING.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)When looking at the Tomatometer averages for superheroes who have been in at least three MCU movies, they don’t get any better than T’Challa’s 91% Tomatometer average. He has appeared in Captain America: Civil War (91%), Black Panther (97%), and Avengers: Infinity War (85%). Also, the 97% Tomatometer score for Black Panther is the best in the MCU.4. Iron Man has the highest Tomatometer and Audience Score combined average: 92%.Talk about strong beginnings: 2008’s Iron Man comes out on top when you average out each film’s Tomatometer and Audience Score. The Tomatometer score for Iron Man is 93% and the Audience Score is 91%, making for an average between the two of 92%. We know a certain “genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist” who would be very happy to hear this.5. THE BEST TOMATOMETER STREAK HAPPENED BETWEEN 2017 and 2018. Phase 3’s Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%), Thor: Ragnarok (92%), Black Panther (97%), Avengers: Infinity War (85%), and Ant-Man and the Wasp (88%) all have above-average Tomatometer scores for the MCU (the MCU average being 83.8%) and average a stellar 90.8% on the Tomatometer. It’s a Pixar-level run that was capped off by Black Panther receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.6. THE WORST TOMATOMETER RUN HAPPENED BETWEEN 2008 and 2012.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Nowadays, after all of the Tomatometer success the MCU has enjoyed, it’s hard to believe that The Incredible Hulk (67%), Iron Man 2 (73%), and Thor (77%) couldn t muster Tomatometer scores above 80%. Those scores aren’t bad at all, but by modern MCU standards, they’re a little lacking. We can’t be too rough on these films though, because the MCU was still in Phase 1, and the next films released were Captain American at 80% and the 92% Tomatometer-rated The Avengers.7. Guardians of the Galaxy is the most loved brand in the MCU, according to the average Audience Scores for their movies (89.5%).Other brands — heroes with one sequel or more — still don’t fare too badly: Captain America (85%), Ant-Man (81%), Iron Man (80%), and Thor (79.6%).Turns out people love A-holes who save the galaxy while listening to awesome music. The James Gunn-directed movies have a totally different vibe to their MCU counterparts (OK, Thor: Ragnarok gives us some GOTG feels), and audiences have latched onto it. You have to admire how Gunn,  the maestro behind Super and Slither, has managed to bring some of his trademark oddness — a severed toe, Jackson Pollock paintings, and a villain who named himself “Taserface” — into the mainstream superhero movie domain.8. Captain America is on the best roll: Tomatometer scores have improved for each successive Cap’ movie (80%, 90%, 91%). (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)It is the only series in the MCU (and among other superhero trilogies) to see this trend. The Captain America series reigns over all MCU trilogies (Iron Man, Thor) when it comes to Tomatometer scores — its three-film average of 87% bests the rest. Also, it is the only superhero trilogy ever to start Fresh and get better with each installment. This is something Thor, Iron Man, Batman, Spider-Man, Blade, Wolverine, and the X-Men can’t claim.9. THE TOMATOMETER AVERAGES DROP WHEN DIRECTORS COME BACK TO DIRECT A SECOND OR THIRD FILM (89% first 82.5% second or third)Joss Whedon (Marvel’s The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Iron Man 2), Peyton Reed (Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp), and the Russo Brothers (Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War) have directed 11 of the 21 released MCU films. The average for their first features is an excellent 89%; however, the average for the second or third films is 82.5%. All of their follow-up films were Fresh, mind you. And we re excited to see if Black Panther director Ryan Coogler can give the 82.5% average a boost when he returns to direct the sequel.10. THIRD MOVIES IN FRANCHISES HAVE THE BEST TOMATOMETER AVERAGE.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Captain America: Civil War (91%), Thor: Ragnarok (92%), Iron Man 3 (79%), and Avengers: Infinity War (85%) have an excellent 86.75% Tomatometer average. On its own, the 86.75% average would be impressive, but when compared to the 85% and 79% averages for first and second franchise films in the MCU, it proves that the third time s a charm — according to the Tomatometer.11. Critics and audiences prefer MCU films that are over two hours.More is more in the MCU: The 15 movies in the collection that run longer than 2 hours have a much higher Tomatometer average than their five under-120-minute counterparts (86.7% compared to 76.6%). It’s a coincidence, but it’s worth noting that The Incredible Hulk (67%) and Thor: The Dark World (67%) are the lowest Tomatometer-rated movies and both have 112-minute running times. Good omen: Avengers: Endgame is apparently 182 minutes.12. MCU movies featuring human villains have a higher Tomatometer average.(Photo by © Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Human Villains: 88.75% | Enhanced Humans: 80.8% | Non-Humans: 80.8%Unlike MCU movies involving villainous gods or bad guys who turn themselves into wild creatures, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Black Panther all feature human villains who don’t have special powers (to begin with) and work on the fringes in order to implement their plans. Critics seem to like this approach. Perhaps these villains connect because of their relatable, human motivations — Erik Killmonger wants to right worldly wrongs, Zemo seeks revenge, Michael Keaton s Vulture is after his version of the American Dream, and no one is getting in his way. Hela, on the other hand, wants to rule the universe — something only a couple of critics we know could relate to.13. FEWER DEATHS = BETTER TOMATOMETER SCORES.Of the 21 films in the MCU, only Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (88%) feature fewer than 10 deaths perpetrated by the heroes or villains, and their Tomatometer average is 90%. On the flip side, the Tomatometer average for the six most carnage-heavy MCU movies – among them, Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Thor: The Dark World – is 84.8%. That s dragged down by The Dark World, but still, maybe Thanos should’ve only killed an eighth of the population.14. PHASE 3 CURRENTLY HAS THE HIGHEST TOMATOMETER AVERAGE OF THE MCU PHASES, WITH AN AWESOME 88.3%.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It’s kinda crazy that the first nine films of the eventual 10 films that will make up Phase Three of the MCU have an average Tomatometer score of 88.3%. The creative team at Marvel has been able to fine-tune its formula to the point where the lowest score of the Phase 3 movies belongs to the Certified  Fresh Captain Marvel, at 78%. The highest score belongs to the wildly popular Black Panther (97%). Phase 1 has an average Tomatometer of 80.3%, and Phase 2’s average is 80.6%. If the pattern of phase-on-phase growth were to continue, look for Phase 4 to pull off the near-impossible and collect an average of close to 100%. (Unless they break the Tomatometer, it ain’t gonna happen).15. COMEDY-HEAVY MCU MOVIES HAVE A HIGHER TOMATOMETER AVERAGE THAN MORE SERIOUS MCU FILMS (87.1% 82.2%).The main reason we wanted to drop this statistic is so we could discuss the greatness of Luis in the Ant-Man franchise. Sure, we love Korg (Thor: Ragnarok), Ned (Spider-Man: Homecoming), and Mantis (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), but they don’t have the storytelling chops that Luis has. Michael Peña’s portrayal of the ex-con who becomes a security consultant is pitch perfect and we can’t get enough of his truth-serum arguments and one-punch knockouts. It won’t happen, but we hope Luis pops up in Avengers: Endgame and saves the day — or at least drops some funny one-liners.16. MCU movies featuring female superheroes have higher Tomatometer (85%) and Audience Score averages (83.5%) than the MCU movies that don’t (80.8%, 78.6%).(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Captain Marvel is the only female-led superhero film in the MCU and won’t have any company in that tier until Scarlett Johansson s Black Widow hits theaters in 2020. However, movies featuring Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), Okoye (Danai Gurira), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander), and/or Gamora (Zoe Saldana) have higher Tomatometer and Audience Scores on average than their more male-dominated counterparts.17. MCU movies featuring at least five superheroes teaming up have a higher Tomatometer average (87.3%) than their lone-wolf counterparts (82.1%).MCU movies that feature at least five superheroes teaming up to form a supergroup have a solid 87.3% Tomatometer average. These films include The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok (yep, we’re considering Heimdall in our count), and Avengers: Infinity War. It’s hardly a surprise these movies score so well. The best moments of the MCU often come from the camaraderie of super crews as they battle various hordes, or each other, and the universe’s big “wow” moments are usually big team-ups — think of the “gang’s all here” slow-motion shot at the beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron, or seeing Ant-Man steal Captain America’s shield from Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.18. Tony Stark = Box office gold.(Photo by Industrial Light & Magic/©Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection)So, this isn t a Tomatometer stat, but it s damn impressive. The Iron Man trilogy may not have the highest Tomatometer average, but it is the highest grossing trilogy with a massive .7 billion worldwide haul (counting inflation). Seems that audiences love Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Tony Stark, and his appearances in non-Iron Man specific movies always guarantee success. He appears in five of the six highest-grossing Marvel movies (The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War), and, with Avengers: Endgame coming up, his worldwide tally will easily pass billion. If Avengers: Endgame is Robert Downey Jr.’s Marvel swan song, no one can say the team at the big M didn’t get their money’s worth from him.Like this? The in-person event will take place at both Union Station in downtown Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood – as well as at satellite locations across the planet – and nominees who choose to attend are encouraged to wear not-casual attire.Recommended: Download our printable 2021 Oscars BallotRecommended: The Biggest Snubs, Surprises, and Milestones of the 2021 Oscar NominationsRecommended: Where to Watch the 2021 Oscar NomineesRecommended: The 2021 Best Picture Nominees Ranked by Tomatometer We re aiming for a fusion of Inspirational and Aspirational, which in actual words means formal is totally cool if you want to go there, but casual is really not, the letter said. With a slimmed-down attendee list of only presenters, those nominated, and their guest and the event being treated as an active movie set in terms of COVID protocol, producers must have something truly unusual planned, and we re eager to see how it stands up to past events. While we wait to see what s in store on the 2021 red carpet and during the event spectacle, we ve had a look at the Oscars events of the past decade and ranked them below from best to worst. Charlize Theron and Renee Zellweger. (Photo by Robyn Beck/AFP via Getty Images)The Academy Awards held its annual nominee luncheon Monday at a new location, the Dolby Ballroom at the Loews Hotel in Hollywood. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts Sciences made the decision two years ago to shorten this year s awards season by two weeks, which resulted in the loss of their preferred home for the event, the Beverly Hilton.Recommended: The Full List of 2020 Oscar NomineesRecommended: Oscar Nominees Gallery – See the Stars with their Certified Fresh trophiesA final chance to socialize with fellow honorees and snap the iconic class photo, the AMPAS luncheon is often touted as a highlight of the season. Littered with stars like Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Charlize Theron, it s hard to walk three steps without bumping into an iconic filmmaker. We spotted Matthew A. Cherry, director of animated short favorite Hair Love, snapping a picture with Knives Out director Rian Johnson and chatting animatedly with double-nominee Cynthia Erivo (Best Actress, Best Song), and Robert De Niro laughing with co-star Al Pacino in front of the DJ booth. But the event isn t just about star-gazing – though it definitely is that. Read below for our recap of highlights from this year s Oscar nominees luncheon.A shortened season keeps some stars awayCynthia Erivo and Brad Pitt. (Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)As always, the luncheon was a star-studded affair, but it was hard not to notice the note-worthy names who opted to stay home. Supporting Actor nominees Tom Hanks, Joe Pesci, and Anthony Hopkins did not attend, while Best Actor noms Antonio Banderas, Adam Driver, and Joaquin Phoenix also skipped the lunch. Banderas is still on the stage in Spain, while Driver just finished a week at SNL, and our media-shy Oscar frontrunner Phoenix (an advocate for the luncheon s choice to feature a plant-based menu) is likely taking a breather before the last stretch. Bombshell nominee Margot Robbie, who s currently on the Birds of Prey press tour, and Saoirse Ronan were also absent. Most shockingly, double nominee Scarlett Johansson stayed away from her first invitation to the event. Another unfortunate casualty of the shortened awards season is that many stars are likely too exhausted from the non-stop stream of parties, screenings, awards shows, and speeches.1917 embraces its frontrunner statusDean-Charles Chapman, Krysty Wilson-Cairns, and George MacKay for 1917. (Photo by Bryan Beasley)1917 stars George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman showed up to celebrate with cinematographer Roger Deakins, director Sam Mendes, composer Thomas Newman, and co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns who, were all nominated. The lack of acting nominations didn t dampen the two young actors spirits, either.  Are you kidding? Today s great! said MacKay when we asked how he was doing before the event kicked off. And he has reason to be optimistic: 1917 has been raking in the hardware, recently adding a Producers Guild win and a Directors Guild win for the one-shot WWII epic. Mendes also seems to have finally embraced his frontrunner status; gone is the shocked expression he gave after his Best Director and Best Drama wins at the Golden Globes. The Skyfall director walked into the luncheon beaming, later snapping a comical photo with fellow nom Rian Johnson, who forwarded it to friend Edgar Wright, who then affectionately posted it on Twitter. Cinematography favorite Roger Deakins also took his buzz in stride, as is his famously laid-back nature; he has been here before, he joked, adding, I just try to enjoy the day. Parasite team continues to woo voters and rack-up frequent flyer milesTaika Waititi and Bong Joon-ho Joel MearesLast year, Lady Gaga was the biggest source of fascination for the Oscar elites. This year, that distinction falls to Parasite director Bong Joon-ho and his ever-present translator and fellow filmmaker Sharon Choi. Choi, who has been everywhere with Joon-ho this season delivering perfectly timed translations, joked that she might stumble at the finish. She told Rotten Tomatoes, I am almost scared the Oscars is where I might finally mess up. We re betting that won t happen, but we re all but assured to see Choi on the Oscar stage and the film s team will undoubtedly continue to own every room they step in. A constant of the season has been that when Team Parasite arrives, everyone – from Brad Pitt to Quentin Tarantino – takes notice. Parasite helmer Bong had to hop a flight to Rotterdam straight after the luncheon, where he is set to premiere a black-and-white print of his socio-political thriller at the Rotterdam Film Festival.QT looks to make history with another Screenplay winQuentin Tarantino. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)Once Upon A Time In Hollywood writer-director Quentin Tarantino also made an entrance, sporting a throwback bowling shirt and a pretty happy disposition considering the grind of the season. With a steady energy that hasn t wavered over the past weeks, the two-time Oscar winner chatted animatedly with his fellow nominees and the assorted press. He told Rotten Tomatoes that he obviously hopes the film wins in every category, but the Best Original Screenplay Oscar would be especially meaningful for him. It s a historic thing only one other guy has won three Original Screenplay Oscars, he said. If he wins for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, he would join Woody Allen (he s the one other guy ) and be on track to maybe surpass him with his rumored final film. And the class favorites are

Where do you go after Game of Thrones? For the creators of the hit HBO fantasy series, it s Star Wars and now Netflix. Plus, this year s Emmy Awards show is going hostless. Bold. But perhaps not as bold as the timing of FX s next American Crime Story  topic.Game of Thrones Creators Find Their New TV HomeDavid Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signed an overall deal to develop new films and series for Netflix pic.twitter.com/57gLQOSTLE See What s Next (@seewhatsnext) August 7, 2019Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have found their new home: Netflix. The duo has signed what sources told Deadline is a massive deal somewhere in the nine-figure range, after being courted by six different studios, including HBO. We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home, the pair said in a statement. Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same shots from the same 80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them. The duo is also set to produce a series of Star Wars films, with the first expected in 2022.RELATED: 5 Places Star Wars Could Go in the 2020s There Won t Be an Emmys Host This Year(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)Fox boss Charlie Collier confirmed to reporters at the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour that, like the Oscars, there will be no host for the 2019 Emmys. Later that day, former Golden Globes host Amy Poehler said she understands the reluctance of people to sign on for such a massive gig. Those shows are a beast and the people who produce those shows have a specific, hard job, she said. But without a host, It should be a fun party. Think about how fun it is to go to a party, and you don t know who s throwing it. Your brain will probably decide who the host is. Could the New Season of American Crime Story Influence the 2020 Election?(Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Immediately after FX announced that Impeachment would be the theme for the third season of American Crime Story, will focus on Bill Clinton s impeachment through the eyes of the women involved in the case (starring Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky), and will premiere in late September 2020, an online backlash began denouncing the timing of the series. FX boss John Landgraf hit back at critics of the timing, saying that it s scheduled then because people will be interested in this right around the presidential election. I believe very, very strongly in what we’re making. I’ve read it. I think it’s great, Landgraf said. I don’t believe it’s going to determine who’s the next president of the United States. I think that’s a little hysterical, from my standpoint, somebody saying that that’s going to influence the presidential election. And from my standpoint, I am insistent that I’m going to support artists who want to make great art, and they want to put it at the time and place where people are going to watch it. I will stand up here as long as I’m here, and I will stand for artists, and I will stand for art. And no one will shout us down in terms of you saying, You can’t make that art, or You can’t schedule at the time that most people want to watch it. ”Fleabag Takes Top Honors at Television Critics Association Awards Breezy, isn t it? Phoebe Waller-Bridge commented to journalists Laura Prudom and Emma Dibdin, who both wore her black Fleabag season 2 dinner scene outfit to present the Television Critics Association award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy to the series. Fleabag also won Program of the Year and Individual Achievement in Comedy for star and creator Waller-Bridge when the industry organization handed out its annual honors on August 03, 2019 in Beverly Hills. The awards included:Individual Achievement in Drama: Michelle Williams (FOSSE/VERDON, FX)Individual Achievement in Comedy: Phoebe Waller-Bridge (FLEABAG, Amazon)Outstanding Achievement in News and Information: LEAVING NEVERLAND (HBO)Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming: QUEER EYE (Netflix)Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming: ARTHUR (PBS Kids)Outstanding Achievement in Sketch/Variety Shows: LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JOHN OLIVER (HBO)Outstanding New Program: RUSSIAN DOLL (Netflix)Outstanding Achievement in Movie Or Miniseries: CHERNOBYL (HBO)Outstanding Achievement in Drama: BETTER CALL SAUL (AMC)Outstanding Achievement in Comedy: FLEABAG (Amazon)Program of the Year: FLEABAG (Amazon)Lifetime Achievement Honoree: David MilchHeritage Award: DEADWOOD (HBO)Supernatural Says Goodbye to the Winchester Brothers(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)As Supernatural heads into its 15th and final season, stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki reflected on the past and future of their demon-hunting brother characters. I don’t think these guys look in the past very often, unless it’s to help moving forward. I think they will continue to move forward, but this is just it’s a long journey that I don’t think is ever going to be over, Ackles said . I think we’re just going to go away for a while. How long, I don’t know. Cracked Padalecki, And then 15 more seasons. But while Ackles noted there’s a running joke on the set that this is Supernatural, and nothing ever stays dead, executive producer Andrew Dabb said that he and the writers are planning a definitive ending. We’re looking at this as a true ending. And in a true ending, people can’t keep coming back over and over again. Through various machinations, some of the things that our guys have relied on to keep themselves going and going and going no matter what are going to go away. And they’re going to be facing life or death. Really, they face it a lot, but this time it’s for real, Dabb said. The Boys Is One of Amazon s Biggest Shows Ever(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)In the two weeks following its release, Amazon superhero series The Boys has already become one of the streamer s most-watched series. From executive producers Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and Preacher executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, The Boys tells the story of entitled, dangerous superheroes managed by the nefarious Vought Corporation and the vigilantes seeking vengeance for wrongs committed by members of the Seven, the crème de la crème of the Vought superhero machine. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said the series surpassed our predictions for viewing in its first two weeks, and has become one of our most watched Amazon Original series by our Prime Video customers.” The series also became one of the most binged series of 2019 with Amazon Prime Video customers, Amazon reported in a release. The first season is Certified Fresh at 81% on the Tomatometer with 74 reviews. Season 2 is now in production.RELATED:  Why The Boys’ Twisted Take on the Superhero Genre Is So Deeply Satisfying Teen Sleuth Nancy Drew Gets a Supernatural UpdateThe Nancy Drew novels have always contained a possible supernatural element that always turned out to be of human nature. But on The CW s dark series featuring the classic teen detective, that supernatural element might be a little more real. There are ghosts in our show, executive producer Noga Landau said. The way to really look at it is that most of the things that are supernatural are rooted in something that’s happening mysteriously in the real world. Everything is rooted in emotion or some mystery amongst the living that has been unresolved. And while there will be a season-long mystery the characters solve, there will also be some case-of-the-week elements. The case in the pilot is the case that we will be unraveling through the course of the season,  executive producer Melinda Hsu Taylor said, but every week there’s going to be a feel of, like, Oh, this is the story this week. We’ve got this part of the mission to unfold, and another little mini mystery will become revealed to us through the things that we’re doing in that episode. I think it’s a really satisfying season-long mystery, but every week is going to be very satisfying as well. When Will Batwoman Don Her Wig?(Photo by JSquared Photography/The CW)When the character of Batwoman was first introduced to The CW s Arrowverse in the 2018 Elseworlds crossover, she was wearing the character s trademark red wig. But in the pilot for the CW series, which takes place before the events of Elseworlds, there s no wig in sight. That’s going to come up in episode 3, when she really embraces her role as Batwoman, executive producer Caroline Dries said. She puts on that suit, as we see in the pilot, because she’s trying to scare her enemy. And she’s not necessarily trying to become Batwoman. She’s just trying to be disguise her identity and be a fearful opponent to her nemesis. So she it’s a gradual story. It’s an origin story, so it’s a gradual realization of, Oh, actually, I’m going to need my own identity.' In the upcoming crossover, the epic five-show Crisis on Infinite Earths, Dries worked hard to make sure the story line for Batwoman still made sense in the universe of the series. [What] was really important to me as we were breaking the crossover is that I want to keep the tone of our show in Gotham very grounded, she said. We are just starting out, and our characters — it’s not normal for them to interact with aliens and travel to different universes and stuff like that, so that is the first thing I brought up to the major writers’ room as we were breaking the crossover. How Will Black Lightning Join the Arrowverse?(Photo by Josh Stringer/The CW )In addition to the whopping five shows joining The CW s annual Arrowverse crossover — Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman —  Crisis on Infinite Earths will also introduce characters from the network s other superhero series, Black Lightning. Arrowverse executive producer Marc Guggenheim said it was always the goal to make this crossover the biggest ever. Ever since we started talking about doing Crisis — and we started it last year — the goal has always been how many different corners of the DC Universe can we touch? We already say, It’s not Crisis on CW, or It’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. And Black Lightning just makes so much sense. I’m a huge fan of that show, and I’m a longtime fan of that comic character. What it really came down to was Salim Akil deciding whether he wanted to do it. He and I had a great conversation last week talking about Black Lightning being part of the crossover. I think we’re both really jazzed and really excited that there are some phenomenal possibilities here. 1. A  Sudden PeaceBlood of Elves, the first long-form Witcher novel, begins with all of Ciri’s experiences in season 1 inhabiting the narrative’s past. In the two years between the fall of Cintra and the start of the novel, the northern kingdoms won a war against Nilfgaard and an uneasy peace rules the day.It is possible season 2 will start from this standpoint, with two years passed in the gap between the season 1 finale and the season 2 premiere. But then again, The Witcher plays fast and loose with what it considers important, so the conflict between Nilfgaard and the northern kingdoms may matter to the series as a source of constant conflict.Although, as it happens, the Northern Kings in the books want another war with Nilfgaard in the books, so perhaps a two-year time jump will be The Witcher’s opening salvo as season 2 begins.2. The Hunt For Yennefer(Photo by James Minchin/Netflix)Clearly, Yennefer’s well-being will be of the utmost importance when the show returns. As it stands, she seemingly used all of her chaos to halt the Nilfgaard army. But considering her easy way with portals throughout the season, we expect to find some self-preservation extinct kicked in and transported her far from Sodden Hill. But her disappearance from the battlefield means several interested parties will be searching for her. Fans will no doubt want to see her united with Geralt and Ciri – it is part of the show’s premise after all. And, as it happens, a series can only go so long separating its main characters before viewers get impatient (even if The Witcher saga excels at keeping its principle characters apart). At the same time, The Witcher’s short season orders (just eight episodes!) means it is possible Geralt and Ciri will search throughout the North for her and only succeed in season 2’s final moments.Hopefully, Yennefer will have an interesting story in the interim. Also, both the Nilfgaard mage Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni) and any surviving members of the Chapter’s task force would likely want to find her as well. She has a legacy, after all, and people will be interested in seeing it serve their ends.3. Training Ciri(Photo by Netflix)Much as how the early short stories outlined the world before Ciri arrived on the scene, season 1 roamed the timeline and offered key pieces of backstory before the main Witcher saga begins. This suggest the real story begins in season 2 with Geralt not chasing after Yennefer – which Ciri’s question about her implies – but instead taking Ciri to Kaer Morhen. It is the home he referenced while dealing with the rotfiend bite and where his novel counterpart takes Ciri in Blood of Elves. At Kaer Morhen, she is trained by several older witchers, including Vesemir, who was mentioned briefly in the later episodes of season 1. Triss Merigold (Anna Shaffer) also becomes her teacher for a time before Ciri relocates to Ellander and, eventually, is taught by Yennefer herself. It’s all exciting material for a novel, but it is easy to think the series will eat a lot of this plot within two or three episodes. Although considering the way it plays with time, it is entirely possible the season will begin with Ciri and Yennefer leaving Ellander and Geralt nowhere to be found, setting up the format of the second season and allowing the flashback structure to highlight Ciri’s education.4. Geralt and Triss?(Photo by Katalin Vermes/Netflix)Back in the books, Triss finds herself drawn to Geralt as their paths cross more and more. In the video game series, players are given the option of perusing more serious and long-term ties with Triss. And considering how much time the games spend on that relationship, we think it is possible the television series will devote some plot to it as well.Granted, Triss was not in the best of shape when we last saw her; she was being cradled by another survivor of the Sodden Hill defense. But we’re inclined to assume anyone who did not die on screen will find a way to mend themselves in the interim between seasons. And should season 2 follow events of Blood of Elves, Triss will be needed at Kaer Morhen. That certainly leaves some time for Geralt to spark an interest in another mage. Or, at least, for her to develop an unrequited attraction.

Today s Ketchup brings you another set of headlines from the world of film development news, covering movies with new roles for Richard Madden, Jessica Chastain, Michael Rooker, Elisabeth Moss, and more. This WEEK S TOP STORYMARVEL S YONDU May SNAP HIS TEETH INTO THE SUICIDE SQUAD AS KING SHARK(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Ever since Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn signed on to direct Warner Bros. and DC Comics The Suicide Squad, there have been rumblings that at least one of his Marvel stars would join him. For a while, there was word that might be Dave Bautista as Peacemaker, until recent news that the role will likely go to fellow professional wrestler John Cena instead. Today, we learned that James Gunn still might reunite with one of his Guardians stars, with Michael Rooker now in talks to play the monstrous villain, King Shark. If you re a fan of TV s The Flash, you might recall that King Shark has had some pretty cool scenes on that show. The Suicide Squad cast will also include Idris Elba, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Warner Bros. has scheduled The Suicide Squad for August 6, 2021. Gunn is expected to return to Marvel Studios for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after he wraps on the DC flick, suggesting a Guardians release date no sooner than 2022.Fresh Developments1. GAME OF THRONES, Bodyguard FAVORITE JOINS MARVEL S THE ETERNALS (Photo by Tony Gonzalez/Everett Collection)We re now within 10 days of the end of HBO s Game of Thrones, so we re in the midst of a wave of new roles for those many actors. The biggest story for a Game of Thrones favorite this week however was for someone whose last episode was nearly six years ago. Richard Madden, who played Robb Stark, the onetime King in the North, is now in talks with Marvel Studios about starring in The Eternals. If he signs on, Madden would be playing Ikaris, who, in the comics, has been a leader of the Eternals in the past. Angelina Jolie is also starring in The Eternals as Sersi (a long-running member of the Avengers in the late 1980s and early 1990s). Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, HBO s Silicon Valley) and South Korea s Ma Dong-Seok are also attached to play unknown characters. There have also been reports that Marvel is looking to cast an openly gay Asian actor, but that role appears to have not yet been cast. The Eternals will be directed by Chloe Zhao (The Rider, Songs My Brothers Taught Me), whose two films to date both have Tomatometer scores above 90%. There is no official release date for The Eternals yet, but if the filming start dates align with the Marvel s put out, it might be November 6, 2020 (after Black Widow, which might come out May 1, 2020).2. DISNEY SCHEDULES NEW STAR WARS MOVIES FOR 2022, 2024, AND 2026 (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Every once in a while, a massive story will come out which is actually several all rolled into one. This week, Disney announced dozens of release dates (or changes), including some pretty seismic revelations. Last September, we heard that Disney planned on slowing down the release of their Star Wars franchise, and we now officially know that there will be a three year gap after this December s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Then, starting with December 16, 2022, there will be Star Wars movies every two years; the next two will arrive in theaters on December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026. What we don t know is what these Star Wars movies actually are. It s known that Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) has plans for a new Star Wars trilogy. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are also developing a trilogy which is rumored to be set in the Old Republic period most seen to date in various video games. (You can check out a breakdown of five places we think the Star Wars franchise can go in the 2020s here.) We think that some of the release date changes are Rotten Ideas, so please continue to that section to read more.3. BLACK PANTHER’s CHADWICK BOSEMAN TO SLASH AGAIN AS SAMURAI YASUKE (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Chadwick Boseman has starred in a few movies now where he was a first. Boseman played baseball groundbreaker Jackie Robinson in 42, he played Thurgood Marshall (the first African American Supreme Court Justice) in Marshall, and of course, Black Panther was a significant first. This week, Boseman signed on for another first in the historical drama Yasuke, in which he will portray the first African samurai in Japan. The historical Yasuke was a Portuguese retainer of Mozambique heritage who was brought to Japan as a slave in the 16th century, making him the first black man to set foot on Japanese soil, [as] Yasuke’s arrival aroused the interest of Nobunaga, a ruthless warlord seeking to unite the fractured country under his banner. It s not yet known who will be directing Yasuke.4. Jane Campion is Back, with Doctor Strange and a Handmaid in Tow(Photo by ©Apparition/courtesy Everett Collection)Marvel Studios has tapped so many top stars (and helped others become stars) that a bunch of new films feature those names. Acclaimed New Zealand director Jane Campion (The Piano) hasn t directed a feature film in 10 years (2009 s Bright Star), and she is now preparing to direct The Power of the Dog, an adaptation of the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage. For this film, Campion has cast Benedict Cumberbatch (Marvel s Doctor Strange) and Elisabeth Moss of the acclaimed Hulu series The Handmaid s Tale. Like 1994 s Legends of the Fall, The Power of the Dog is a story of ranchers in Montana, with Cumberbatch playing a wealthy Montana rancher who engages in a relentless war against his brother s son from a secret marriage to a local widow (played by Moss). The brother and son characters have yet to be cast.5. IT: CHAPTER TWO STAR JESSICA CHASTAIN TO PUT ON THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE (Photo by Kerry Hayes/ © EuropaCorp USA /Courtesy Everett Collection)Nearly 20 years before acclaimed celebrity documentaries like Won t You Be My Neighbor? and RBG, one of the most successful early documentaries in that style was 2001 s The Eyes of Tammy Faye, about televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. Fox Searchlight is preparing to produce a dramatic biopic about Tammy and husband Jim, to also be titled The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Attached so far are Jessica Chastain (IT: Chapter Two, Dark Phoenix) and Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man). Director Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) will be working from a screenplay adapted from the documentary.  There s no word yet about which makeup artist will be hired to work on The Eyes of Tammy Faye, but whomever it is might automatically be in the running for a Hair and Makeup Oscar.6. CHRIS HEMSWORTH AND TIFFANY HADDISH TEAMING UP FOR BUDDY COP COMEDY (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Universal)Chris Hemsworth is proving himself a master at comedic chemistry – witness the splendor of  Lebowski Thor – and a great foil to a strong female co-star (he will be back on screen with Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson in Men in Black: International this summer). The latest female star to sign on to test Hemsworth’s on-screen charisma and comedic chops is Tiffany Haddish, whose career has been blowing up ever since 2017 s Girls Trip. Haddish and Hemsworth will costar together in the buddy cop comedy Down Under Cover, with Haddish playing a cop who teams up with an undercover male stripper police detective.#7. Dark Knight Writer David S. Goyer Rebooting HellraiserJoel MearesBack in the early 2000s, Spyglass Entertainment was a prolific production company which provided Disney s Touchstone with many of its hits, including The Count of Monte Cristo, Shanghai Noon, and 1999 s The Sixth Sense. Spyglass is back in business again as an independent company called the Spyglass Media Group and in the market for new franchises. Their first major project was announced this week: a reboot of the prolific horror series Hellraiser, featuring the erotic horrors of Pinhead and his Cenobite collaborators. When Hellraiser came out over 30 years ago in 1987, there was nothing like it, but since then, movies like Saw and Hostel have made the torture porn horror subgenre almost ubiquitous. Hellraiser is poised to make a big return, and the job of adapting Hellraiser for a new generation is going to David S. Goyer, the screenwriter behind comic book adaptations like Blade, The Dark Knight, and Man of Steel, and this year s Terminator: Dark Fate. It s not yet known exactly how Goyer will reboot Hellraiser.Rotten Ideas2. DISNEY S MASSIVE RELEASE DATE DUMP REVEALS VAST CHANGES(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Pretty much every week, there are new release dates or changes for upcoming movies, but usually it s only for a handful of films. This week, Disney announced such a massive slate of new dates and changes that it s had sort of a tsunami-like impact on the calendar. Disney recently finalized its acquisition of Fox s film properties, and part of its ongoing plan is to slow Fox releases down to 5-6 films a year (cut in half from 12 in 2018). Many Fox films are therefore being delayed or outright canceled. For example, The New Mutants (the last Fox/Marvel movie before Marvel Studios takes over the X-Men and Fantastic Four) was originally scheduled for 2018, and now it s not scheduled to come out until April 3, 2020. Harrison Ford s Call of the Wild (February 21, 2020) is one of the other films pushed back into 2020, as is the long-in-development YA novel adaptation Artemis Fowl (May 29, 2020), though that has always been a Disney movie. Dora and the Lost City of Gold has already swept in to take over Fowl’s original August 9, 2019, release date. Disney s slate is also significant for what it doesn t have, such as Fox s various Marvel movies, like Gambit (with Channing Tatum attached), and projects like X-Force, X-23, Kitty Pryde, and James Franco s Madrox the Multiple Man.1. AVATAR 2 PUSHED BACK TO 2021 (SEVEN YEARS AFTER ITS ORIGINAL 2014 RELEASE DATE) (Photo by @ 20th Century Fox)Up until this week, it was believed that Avatar 2 would be released next year, on December 18, 2020, following years of delays from its original release date in December 2014. This week, as Disney also revealed an every-two-years rotation of Star Wars movies in 2022, 2024, and 2026, they did the same thing for the upcoming Avatar sequels. The four Avatar sequels (yes, James Cameron is really working on four sequels) are now scheduled for December releases in the odd years: Avatar 2 (December 17, 2021), Avatar 3 (December 22, 2023), Avatar 4 (December 19, 2025), and Avatar 5 (December 17, 2027). Paramount Pictures took quick advantage of the vacuum left by the Avatar 2 move, pushing their own sequel, Coming to America 2, back to December 18, 2020. By doing that, Paramount also made room for the science-fiction drama Infinite, starring Chris Evans, on August 7, 2020. For their own part, Disney also replaced Avatar 2 with their own films, the double feature of Steven Spielberg s West Side Story remake on December 18, 2020, followed by Cruella (the live-action 101 Dalmatians starring Emma Stone), five days later on December 23, 2020. We can expect the next few weeks to have more release date changes from Disney s competitor studios.Like this?
