As more and more people are compelled to practice social distancing and encouraged to stay home, as movie theaters temporarily shutter their doors, and as studios continue to pull their scheduled 2020 films off the release calendar, we ve decided to reformat this weekly Critics Consensus column to focus on titles that are newly available on the home entertainment market. With that in mind, our list of digital new releases this week includes an action-comedy sequel 17 years in the making, a worthwhile video game-inspired adventure, and a ho-hum horror sequel. Ian McShane is back big time in 2019.The British actor s Starz series American Gods returns in March — no small feat after showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departed the series, delaying its season 2 premiere. And John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum is out in May. HBO s long-awaited Deadwood movie is coming this spring; McShane won a Golden Globe best actor drama award for his part as foul-mouthed Al Swearengen in the Western series. There s also McShane s role in Hellboy, and the jazz biopic Bolden.Rotten Tomatoes spoke to McShane about his numerous projects on Tuesday following the American Gods panel during the Television Critics Association s Winter Press Tour in Los Angeles.First, while the third film in the John Wick series hits theaters in May, Starz is planning a spin-off series called The Continental that would be set at the movies hotel for assassins. Though a vital character at the films Continental hotel, don’t expect to see McShane s Winston on the series. That doesn t mean he won t be involved at all, however.“No, McShane told RT when asked about appearing on the series. But I may give em a voiceover. A series, no. They talked about that.”(Photo by David Lee/©Summit Entertainment/Courtesy Everett Collection)There s also the matter of finding out where Winston ends up at the end of John Wick 3. When it begins, he’s going to be in a bit of trouble for letting John Wick (Keanu Reeves) get away at the end of Chapter 2.“Oh yeah, you know The High Table will be pissed off,” McShane said. “The High Table are very pissed off, and they’re very angry.”American Gods casts McShane as Mr. Wednesday, the ancient Norse god Odin living on Earth and trying to lead his fellow old gods — among them goddess of dawn Easter, Slavic god Czernobog, and Ghanaian trickster god Anansi — into battle against the new gods, including Media, Technical Boy, and Mr. World, the god of globalization. Wednesday regularly plays gods, humans, and other entities off each other.McShane hinted that a similar dynamic exists in the world of John Wick, that we’ve only just begun to see the forces behind the scenes at The Continental, and they could all be coming out to hunt John Wick.“It all shifts around,” McShane said. “Talk about shifting alliances, it’s the same thing.”(Photo by HBO)There s also the matter of HBO s long-gestating Deadwood movie. Fans have been waiting to see Al Swearengen again since the network canceled Deadwood following its third season in 2006. McShane said that the intervening 13 years have not been kind to his character.“Al’s a little diminished from what he was,” McShane teased. This time, because the cast and crew are not hoping for a fourth season, the movie gives the show its long-overdue definitive ending. But, of course, there s always the possibility of the movie s unparalleled success.“It’s a full ending,” McShane said. “I say that, but if it’s a huge success for HBO, they’ll go, ‘Can we get another one? Can we squeeze another one of out of you?’ It’s a two-hour movie so it’s a finite thing.”Rumors of a Deadwood limited series or movie have persisted for more than a decade, so McShane still can’t quite believe he actually filmed one. And while HBO has yet to confirm a premiere date — only the vague promise of spring — McShane might have some intel on that matter.“Now it’s coming out in May,” he said. Pencil that into your calendar, but wait until the network confirms to set it in pen.诺克萨斯之手出装顺序Almost 30 years ago, writer-director Neil Jordan won an Oscar for his screenplay for The Crying Game, and while he s made great films since then, he s never quite achieved that same level of success again, and the past several years have been quiet ones for him. This week, he returns to theaters with a thriller starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Academy Award nominee Isabelle Huppert. In Greta, Huppert plays the widow of the title, a French piano teacher who befriends then gradually stalks and terrorizes the wide-eyed young woman (Moretz) who discovers her lost purse on the subway and personally returns it to her. Critics say the film is knowingly over-the-top, which works to its advantage at times but undermines its effectiveness at others, and it s buoyed by a committed performance from Huppert. It doesn t quite establish itself as a campy guilty pleasure or a whole-hog horror film to satisfy fans looking for either of those things, but it s twisty and a little demented, and Huppert is pretty convincing as a lonely nutcase. Then again, she can be pretty convincing in any role.

0.33.9 4月喜迎ess hiding in a convent in another direction. Insecure s Regina Hicks and Star s Karin Gist are developing the feature for Disney.Additionally, the service will mine the 20th Century Fox library. During the August 6 earnings call, Iger revealed plans to develop new versions of Home Alone, Night At the Museum, Cheaper By the Dozen, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It is unclear if they will be a television series or feature-length Disney+ original films, but Iger said each property will be re-imagined for a new generation. And thanks to Disney acquisition of the Fox assets, it will also offer 600 hours of National Geographic content at launch.See The Launch List below for the full roster of film and show titles.Disney+ Will Also Offer Totally New Original Films and SeriesWhile it makes sense for Disney to lean heavily on its proven stable of intellectual property, Disney+ has acquired a number of films and put several series in development based on concepts new to the corporation, like Diary of a Female President. Created by Crazy Ex-Girlfriend veteran Ilana Peña, it will center on a 12-year-old Cuban-American girl on a mission to become the president of the United States. Of course, she has to survive middle school first. The series already has a 10-episode commitment.Recent Toy Story 4 breakout star Forky (Tony Hale) will star in his own short-form series, Forky Asks a Question, in which he will explore important questions about how the world works, such as “What is love?” and “What is time?”The service is also said to be developing a comedy series called Four Dads about a gay couple who divorce, marry other people, and find they still need to spend time together as they raise their pre-teen daughters. The film slate includes Noelle, in which Anna Kendrick plays Santa Claus’s daughter Noelle. Bill Hader, Billy Eichner, and Shirley MacLaine also star. Originally set to be released theatrically next November, it joined the Disney+ roster last year. The often-delayed Magic Camp will also find a home on Disney+. Directed by Mark Waters, the film stars Adam DeVine as a magician who takes a job counseling at a magic-oriented youth camp in the hopes of reigniting his career.Stargirl – not to be confused with the upcoming DC Universe series of the same name – will also land on the platform. Based on the novel by Jerry Spinelli, it tells the tale of Stargirl Caraway (Grace VanderWaal), a homeschooled teen who shakes things up when she enrolls in an Arizona high school. At D23, Disney+ previewed two new features set to premiere exclusively on the service. Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, directed by Tom McCarthy, follows the exploits of a quirky, deadpan hero, Timmy Failure, who, along with his 1,500-pound polar bear partner Total, operates Total Failure Inc., a Portland detective agency. Togo, meanwhile, stars Willem DeFoe as a man who must journey through the Arctic with only his most spirited sled dog at his side. And, finally, Disney+ is developing a feature based on Polly Shulman’s YA series The Grimm Legacy, which follows a group of teenagers who work at a library specializing in arcane materials uniquely suited to characters from the Grimm fairy tales. Tolkien screenwriter David Gleeson will write the script.See The Launch List below for the full roster of film and show titles. The Starting LineupIn addition to The Simpsons and The Mandalorian, other specific content you can expect on launch day includes all of the Marvel Studios films except for Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, the two MCU Spider-Man films, and The Incredible Hulk. All but those latter three — which feature characters shared by other studios — are expected to make their way to the service within the first year. The Marvel’s Hero Project reality series will also debut during the service’s launch. All Pixar films, aside from the recently released Toy Story 4, will be available at launch, but expect Toy Story 4 to join its brethren by early 2020.Star Wars fans will be able to watch all of the live-action films except Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story. (Feel free to snark about those omissions in the comments below.) On the TV end of the galaxy, all of Star Wars Rebels and the extant seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be available in addition to Mandalorian.Outside of the company’s big IP farms, The World According to Jeff Goldblum and the Kristen Bell–produced Encore! will also on November 12.Disney film library content will be quite robust, with films like Tron, Lilo Stitch, 101 Dalmatians, the new version of The Lady and the Tramp, and the film that started it all, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, all available at launch. Television library highlights include the original DuckTales series and the first season of the current revamp, the aforementioned Simpsons, and Malcolm in the Middle, proving integration of Fox properties was always a priority for the service. As Iger put it, the launch day lineup will be significant in quality. See The Launch List below for the full roster of film and show titles.Disney s BAMTech Subsidiary Is Building the PlatformIn August 2017, Disney bought a controlling interest in BAMTech, LLC, a technology firm specializing in streaming service apps like HBO Now.According to Iger, the Disney+ platform will feature elegant navigation and ways to personalize content. Which, considering the way Netflix hides personalized watch lists these days, may be a bigger competitive feature than currently thought. In fact, that elegant navigation may be more of a selling point as streaming services tend to follow the Netflix model. If Disney can reinvent navigating to content — especially for the company s vast library — it could prove to be a compelling way to pull people away from their chief rival in the streaming sphere. While Disney+ will become the service for Star Wars and Marvel fans, it will also indicate the market s future as other corporations make moves to silo content on their own services and Netflix plans for a future in which most of its content is home-grown. But with its strong brand recognition and library – to say nothing of the price – it may quickly become the leader in streaming services. The Launch ListIt. Is. Time. Where do you go after Game of Thrones? For the creators of the hit HBO fantasy series, it s Star Wars and now Netflix. Plus, this year s Emmy Awards show is going hostless. Bold. But perhaps not as bold as the timing of FX s next American Crime Story topic.Game of Thrones Creators Find Their New TV HomeDavid Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signed an overall deal to develop new films and series for Netflix pic.twitter.com/57gLQOSTLE See What s Next (@seewhatsnext) August 7, 2019Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have found their new home: Netflix. The duo has signed what sources told Deadline is a massive deal somewhere in the nine-figure range, after being courted by six different studios, including HBO. We’ve had a beautiful run with HBO for more than a decade and we’re grateful to everyone there for always making us feel at home, the pair said in a statement. Over the past few months we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber. We remember the same shots from the same 80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they invited us to join them. The duo is also set to produce a series of Star Wars films, with the first expected in 2022.RELATED: 5 Places Star Wars Could Go in the 2020s There Won t Be an Emmys Host This Year(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)Fox boss Charlie Collier confirmed to reporters at the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour that, like the Oscars, there will be no host for the 2019 Emmys. Later that day, former Golden Globes host Amy Poehler said she understands the reluctance of people to sign on for such a massive gig. Those shows are a beast and the people who produce those shows have a specific, hard job, she said. But without a host, It should be a fun party. Think about how fun it is to go to a party, and you don t know who s throwing it. Your brain will probably decide who the host is. Could the New Season of American Crime Story Influence the 2020 Election?(Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Immediately after FX announced that Impeachment would be the theme for the third season of American Crime Story, will focus on Bill Clinton s impeachment through the eyes of the women involved in the case (starring Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky), and will premiere in late September 2020, an online backlash began denouncing the timing of the series. FX boss John Landgraf hit back at critics of the timing, saying that it s scheduled then because people will be interested in this right around the presidential election. I believe very, very strongly in what we’re making. I’ve read it. I think it’s great, Landgraf said. I don’t believe it’s going to determine who’s the next president of the United States. I think that’s a little hysterical, from my standpoint, somebody saying that that’s going to influence the presidential election. And from my standpoint, I am insistent that I’m going to support artists who want to make great art, and they want to put it at the time and place where people are going to watch it. I will stand up here as long as I’m here, and I will stand for artists, and I will stand for art. And no one will shout us down in terms of you saying, You can’t make that art, or You can’t schedule at the time that most people want to watch it. ”Fleabag Takes Top Honors at Television Critics Association Awards Breezy, isn t it? Phoebe Waller-Bridge commented to journalists Laura Prudom and Emma Dibdin, who both wore her black Fleabag season 2 dinner scene outfit to present the Television Critics Association award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy to the series. I don’t think these guys look in the past very often, unless it’s to help moving forward. I think they will continue to move forward, but this is just it’s a long journey that I don’t think is ever going to be over, Ackles said . I think we’re just going to go away for a while. How long, I don’t know. Cracked Padalecki, And then 15 more seasons. But while Ackles noted there’s a running joke on the set that this is Supernatural, and nothing ever stays dead, executive producer Andrew Dabb said that he and the writers are planning a definitive ending. We’re looking at this as a true ending. And in a true ending, people can’t keep coming back over and over again. Through various machinations, some of the things that our guys have relied on to keep themselves going and going and going no matter what are going to go away. And they’re going to be facing life or death. Really, they face it a lot, but this time it’s for real, Dabb said. The Boys Is One of Amazon s Biggest Shows Ever(Photo by Amazon Prime Video)In the two weeks following its release, Amazon superhero series The Boys has already become one of the streamer s most-watched series. From executive producers Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and Preacher executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, The Boys tells the story of entitled, dangerous superheroes managed by the nefarious Vought Corporation and the vigilantes seeking vengeance for wrongs committed by members of the Seven, the crème de la crème of the Vought superhero machine. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said the series surpassed our predictions for viewing in its first two weeks, and has become one of our most watched Amazon Original series by our Prime Video customers.” The series also became one of the most binged series of 2019 with Amazon Prime Video customers, Amazon reported in a release. The first season is Certified Fresh at 81% on the Tomatometer with 74 reviews. Season 2 is now in production.RELATED: Why The Boys’ Twisted Take on the Superhero Genre Is So Deeply Satisfying Teen Sleuth Nancy Drew Gets a Supernatural UpdateThe Nancy Drew novels have always contained a possible supernatural element that always turned out to be of human nature. But on The CW s dark series featuring the classic teen detective, that supernatural element might be a little more real. There are ghosts in our show, executive producer Noga Landau said. The way to really look at it is that most of the things that are supernatural are rooted in something that’s happening mysteriously in the real world. Everything is rooted in emotion or some mystery amongst the living that has been unresolved. And while there will be a season-long mystery the characters solve, there will also be some case-of-the-week elements. The case in the pilot is the case that we will be unraveling through the course of the season, executive producer Melinda Hsu Taylor said, but every week there’s going to be a feel of, like, Oh, this is the story this week. We’ve got this part of the mission to unfold, and another little mini mystery will become revealed to us through the things that we’re doing in that episode. I think it’s a really satisfying season-long mystery, but every week is going to be very satisfying as well. When Will Batwoman Don Her Wig?(Photo by JSquared Photography/The CW)When the character of Batwoman was first introduced to The CW s Arrowverse in the 2018 Elseworlds crossover, she was wearing the character s trademark red wig. But in the pilot for the CW series, which takes place before the events of Elseworlds, there s no wig in sight. That’s going to come up in episode 3, when she really embraces her role as Batwoman, executive producer Caroline Dries said. She puts on that suit, as we see in the pilot, because she’s trying to scare her enemy. And she’s not necessarily trying to become Batwoman. She’s just trying to be disguise her identity and be a fearful opponent to her nemesis. So she it’s a gradual story. It’s an origin story, so it’s a gradual realization of, Oh, actually, I’m going to need my own identity.' In the upcoming crossover, the epic five-show Crisis on Infinite Earths, Dries worked hard to make sure the story line for Batwoman still made sense in the universe of the series. [What] was really important to me as we were breaking the crossover is that I want to keep the tone of our show in Gotham very grounded, she said. We are just starting out, and our characters — it’s not normal for them to interact with aliens and travel to different universes and stuff like that, so that is the first thing I brought up to the major writers’ room as we were breaking the crossover. How Will Black Lightning Join the Arrowverse?(Photo by Josh Stringer/The CW )In addition to the whopping five shows joining The CW s annual Arrowverse crossover — Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman — Crisis on Infinite Earths will also introduce characters from the network s other superhero series, Black Lightning. Arrowverse executive producer Marc Guggenheim said it was always the goal to make this crossover the biggest ever. Ever since we started talking about doing Crisis — and we started it last year — the goal has always been how many different corners of the DC Universe can we touch? We already say, It’s not Crisis on CW, or It’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. And Black Lightning just makes so much sense. I’m a huge fan of that show, and I’m a longtime fan of that comic character. What it really came down to was Salim Akil deciding whether he wanted to do it. He and I had a great conversation last week talking about Black Lightning being part of the crossover. I think we’re both really jazzed and really excited that there are some phenomenal possibilities here. Japanese horror movies got a big leg-up in the 1950s and 1960s with Ugetsu and Kwaidan, before spinning heads over time with transgressive cult works (Tetsuo: The Ironman), comedic takes (Hausu, One Cut of the Dead), and crossover hits (Ringu, Audition). And we d be remiss to not include at least the original kaiju movie, Godzilla. It was created in response to nuclear oblivion, and creating art to process real trauma is one of the core values of horror. And now we ve gathered every Japanese horror movie with a Fresh rating and ranked them by Tomatometer, creating your guide to the best Japanese horror movies of all time.Best Spanish-Language Horror Movies | Best Korean Horror MoviesBest Italian Horror Movies | Best French Horror Movies2020 s Best Horror Movies | 200 Best Horror Movies Ever
(Photo by ©Amazon)Rotten Tomatoes’ “Essentials series will provide an in-depth look at one nominee or potential nominee from each of the major awards categories – the four acting categories, and directing – diving into their highest-rated work from both fans and critics, essential titles from their filmography, and featuring thoughts on their nominated film drawn from an extended interview. THE ACTOR: PAUL RACIThe cliche in Hollywood is that every overnight success is about 10 years in the making. For Paul Raci, who earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his gently arresting turn in Sound of Metal, that jump into the limelight took well, just a little longer. “I started professionally acting in ’80,” he tells us over Zoom from his house in Burbank, his long hair resting over his shoulders, his two black electric guitars proudly on display in the background. Over 40-plus years, he’s trawled the boards in his hometown of Chicago and Los Angeles, where he moved in 1989, and picked up one-liner bit parts here and there on the small screen for Parks and Recreation, Baskets, Scrubs, and Baywatch, and occasional tiny big-screen roles along the lines of “Bad Guy” in Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. So the news — which would permanently change things — came as a shock.“I don’t have an alarm clock,” Raci says, painting the picture of the morning of the Oscar nominations announcements. “I have a head clock. And that morning my head clock was turned off for some reason. I was supposed to get up at 5. I look at the clock on my dresser. It’s 5:25. So we run into my living room, turn on my TV, and they’re on the second name of Best Supporting Actor. And they go, ‘And the third one is Paul Rah-see.’ And I go, ‘No, it’s Ray-see, but I’ll take it!’ So then it’s 5:30 in the morning and my neighbors are bringing me champagne, chocolate-covered edibles — not the kind you’re thinking of, like the fruit kind, flowers My wife is crying; my daughter’s crying. It didn’t sink in until a couple of days later when my wife and I looked at each other and were like, ‘Really? This is happening? Really?’”Really. And for good reason. In Sound of Metal, Raci plays Joe, the leader of a shelter for deaf recovering addicts who takes in Ruben (star Riz Ahmed), a noise-rock drummer who recently lost his hearing. From the moment we meet Joe, we know him. Every move he makes or line he delivers feels lived in and authentic, and his eyes have the kind, wise quality of someone who is zen but ran into some bumps getting to that place. That verisimilitude is no accident: Like Joe, Raci served in Vietnam, though he didn t lose his hearing there. Raci also grew up a CODA (child of deaf adults) and, like Joe, struggled with substance abuse, worked in programs to help deaf addicts, and made his living serving the deaf community, in Raci’s case as a sign-language interpreter in the Los Angeles court system, a job he still holds. (Director and co-writer Darius Marder tweaked the original character “just slightly,” according to Raci, to make it more true-to-life.)Now, Raci is recognized and congratulated daily at his morning coffee spot or favorite Mexican joint, “even with the mask on,” he adds. “I’m not gonna say I’m tired of it yet, no,” he admits about his newfound celebrity with a laugh. Here’s how he got there.VIA CHICAGO(Photo by Stefanie Keenan/Getty Images)After two tours in Vietnam, college, and a stint as the frontman of a rock band, Raci and 10 of his actor pals started the Immediate Theatre Company in the far-north-side Chicago neighborhood of Rogers Park. “Real theater, theatrical realism” is how he describes the group’s ethos. “We tried to emulate Steppenwolf [the famed Chicago theater company], where something would burn in your mind and you’d remember it when you got home.”While there, he nabbed a Jeff Award — think Oscars for Chicago theater — for Actor in a Principal Role for Children of a Lesser God. “Marlee Matlin was the supporting role in that show,” he says of the play, which chronicles a romance between a deaf student and her teacher. “And then they were making the movie around the same time, so they called her, she auditioned, and the rest was history: She played the lead in the movie, which was made about a year after the show that we did.” Los Angeles beckoned.THE MOVE TO L.A.(Photo by Rich Fury/Getty Images)“You’re in Chicago, thinking you’re gonna move out here and sit by the pool with your sunglasses on and wait for your agent to call you. It ain’t gonna happen, man,” Raci says. “I quickly found out that if you’re 40 years old, which I was when I moved out here, that nobody’s looking for you. They were looking for you about 10 years ago. So I missed that boat.” Between frustrating auditions and his day job at the courts and the odd one-liner part in a TV show, Raci put his heart into the Deaf West Theatre, “which has deaf productions — deaf run, deaf owned, deaf board of directors,” he explains. “So that’s where I’ve been doing my trade for the past 20 years.”There were nibbles of making it big onscreen, though: “So I get this role on Parks and Rec and, hey, there’s a possibility of becoming a series regular [claps his hands]. Dang, here it is! Series regular. Comedy. I do comedy. I’m falling off my chair. This is great. I grew up at Second City in Chicago. So I get the role, it’s a couple of lines with Amy Poehler. No series regular. Didn’t happen. But they dangle that carrot in front of you: ‘There it is, come on, come and get it, Paul… Oh, no, not this time.’ But you know what? It’s been thirty years out here, okay? That happened to me all the time.”THE BIG BREAK(Photo by ©Amazon)Raci actually turned down Sound of Metal — that is, after his agent and wife coaxed the film’s casting director into giving his audition tape a look, stressing how perfectly her husband’s background matched the role, and after Darius Marder met up with Raci on the east coast and he accepted the part. “I found out I could make more money in Los Angeles as a sign language interpreter in the court system than traveling to Boston [to shoot the movie] and lose money,” Raci recounts. “But eventually Darius figured out that he could give me a little more per diem, and at least I wouldn’t lose any money, okay?”With an indie budget, “you get two or three takes — that’s it,” Raci tells us, going on to explain that there were no rehearsals, which, for viewers, is surprising to hear, given how palpable and realistic he and Riz Ahmed’s interactions are. “When I sit down for my very first scene with Riz, that’s the first day I met the guy. He doesn’t know me; I don’t know him. He’s a brilliant actor, just so bewildered and full of loss. He was blowing my mind. It was just perfect. I’m so grateful to Riz for breaking my heart in every scene.” For proof of their powerful interactions, look no further than their last scene together — “the scene,” as Raci calls it — where Joe’s eyes well up in a way that compels the audience to follow suit.WHAT S NEXT(Photo by ©Amazon)With the accolades he’s received for Sound of Metal — Raci has won a whopping nine Film Critics Awards for Best Supporting Actor, as well as one from the National Board of Review, not to mention the Oscar buzz — the actor’s days of hearing “Oh, no, not this time” from folks in the industry would seem to be behind him. “I’m sifting through some movie role offers right now — you know, I’ve turned down about ten, so I’m wheeling and dealing here,” he jokes. “What a blessing. I can’t decide whether to do this role, which is really cool, or this one, which is really awesome. I have writers wanting to know if they can write a movie for me. I say, ‘Dude, write your movie. Don’t worry about me, man.’ But that’s how wonderful it is right now.”Wonderful, sure, but Raci feels a strong responsibility to keep pushing for better deaf representation, a throughline of his life and career. “We need to have some deaf protagonists in movies that just happen to be deaf. A lot of deaf people have said to me, ‘How cool is it you guys showed a deaf sober house?’ You would think deaf people would go, ‘Don’t show us that way.’ But they’re thrilled. You’re showing them as normal, with foibles and failures and temptations.” He goes on, animatedly, with a bit of his Chicago accent poking through: “There are too many talented deaf men and women out there who are actors, who really have chops, who really know what they’re doing. So I’m trying to get the idea out there that there’s more to be done as far as deaf characterizations. There’s a lot more to be done.”Sound of Metal is available to stream on Amazon Prime now.Download Rotten Tomatoes printable Oscar Ballot; cast your vote in our digital Oscar ballot. 诺克萨斯之手出装顺序 Could music icon David Bowie have experienced the same level of fame in the England portrayed in Epix drama Pennyworth? Creator Bruno Heller and executive producer Danny Cannon doubt it.“I think he would be allowed to release that awful first album with ‘Laughing Gnome’ and all that,” Heller told Rotten Tomatoes when we talked to him, Cannon, and cast members recently. “He never would ve met Mick Ronson, and he d still be floating about singing about elves.”Considering the program’s use of anachronistic music – like The Clash and Roxy Music – the disappearance of Bowie from the cultural scene may be the clearest indication of Pennyworth’s nightmare world. It is easy to image Lord Harwood’s (Jason Flemyng) vision of England has little room for him.“I think David Bowie would probably be put into stocks and have vegetables thrown at him,” Cannon added.(Photo by Epix)Despite the easy jokes about making a show centered on Batman’s butler, Pennyworth distinguished itself by re-framing the adventures of Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon), Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge), and Martha Kane (Emma Paetz) against the style of the early 1960s and a thought experiment in which the English Civil War did not occur until the time of Queen Elizabeth II. The result was an unexpectedly satisfying debut season and an order for more episodes on EPIX.When the program returns for season 2, one year has passed since Alfie, Thomas, and Martha stopped Harwood’s coup and rescued the Queen. It has also been one year since Alfred killed his father during the senior Pennyworth s attempt to bomb the entire British aristocracy out of existence. In the ensuing chaos, Harwood, Bet Sykes (Paloma Faith), and her sister Peg (Polly Walker) escaped the Tower of London with Harwood resuming his attempt to take over the country. He may not have claimed the title of Lord Protector just yet, but with London, Manchester, and a few other smaller towns resisting his authority, the situation is pretty dicey.(Photo by Epix)Meanwhile, Alfie has worked his way into running a nightclub.“He s taken it over from a good friend of his, Bannon explained. But really his main focus is to save up some money and get out of [England].”The work keeps him busy and away from thoughts about his father. But considering he comes from a generation expected to just carry on through traumatic stress, Alfie’s nightmares linger, and Bannon doubts he’ll ever find help for his various issues.“I think it would be something perhaps that he should look into,” he joked. “I m sure if he lived nowadays in the modern world, he would look into it. Last year, it was something he was experiencing very much on his own and this year people are noticing perhaps that Maybe not that he s unraveling, but there are cracks appearing.”The nightclub itself serves as a glamorous respite from the battles on the front line and another example of that British resiliency.“We wanted London to reflect not just being at war, but the way that they could still celebrate and party in terrible circumstances, which is very British,” Cannon explained.Bannon was, nonetheless, surprised when he arrived on set and saw how swanky the club turned out to be. Expecting a more rundown nightspot, he said, “Mark Scruton, our production designer, had got carried away basically and built this enormous club that was decadent and wonderful and brilliant.”As one of the few new marquee sets, it stands out almost immediately. But the club, and the trouble Alfie gets into in the early part of the season, reflects a tougher challenge ahead — getting his mother to immigrate with him.“She s got to come with him to America,” Bannon said. “I don t think he would leave her behind. The problem is convincing her that America is a good idea. That s the hard bit for him.”(Photo by Epix)Also, for fans of Sandra (Harriet Slater), Bannon thinks Alfie loves her “in his own way,” but it may lead to other conflicts in the future— especially as Esme (Emma Corrin) is still the love of his life. The deteriorating situation in England brings Thomas back to the realm. Now appointed the British station chief for the CIA, his assignment comes with an unspoken directive: the U.S. may be willing to back Harwood over the Queen if the tide of war turns in his favor.“[Thomas s] initial intentions of working with the CIA were for reasons that he believed in,” Aldridge said. “I think he s gone on this journey [and] ending up incredibly cynical and detached from his work.”It makes for a more conflicted Thomas than we’ve seen so far. Nonetheless, Thomas continues to exhibit a boyish nature Aldridge believes only comes out around Martha.(Photo by Epix)“He s trying to do a very good job of playing an adult — I think he was even trying to play kind of older and more responsible than he is — but I think around her, there s kind of an honesty switch that happens. He s less able to bullshit her,” he said. There’s also the possibility that the way he presents himself is all a cover for the beast Crowley (Jonjo O Neill) discovered within him.But Aldridge suggested the beast is more an echo of his son, saying, “I love that was brought into it, and the idea was that it s something that he shares with Bruce.”That said, working for the Company in his new capacity may force Thomas s beast to reappear.Fighting the good fight all this time, though, is Martha. In the wake of the season 1 bombing, she continued to ally herself with the remnants of the No Name League and the Queen’s loyalist coalition.“She s kind of willing to sacrifice anything for that, almost to like a selfish degree,” Paetz said.(Photo by Epix)It means she spends plenty of time on the front lines. and it quickly becomes clear she likes the thrill of it all. Which leads to one question about future events: Will she be able to let that go some day to settle down in Gotham?“I don t think that she can really, entirely, now,” Paetz said. “It brings up questions like, ‘What does it mean to be a vigilante?’ [and] ‘Do you feel like you re doing something for the good of everyone, or actually, is it satisfying something in you, because it feels good for you to do it?’ In theory, she’s fighting a very noble cause that she does believe in, but it really satiates something in her that doesn t really have anything to do with the cause itself.”Martha’s thirst for adventure and justice in the series represents one of the largest expansions of the character in any medium. A happy addition, to be sure, even if it seems at odds with Batman’s memories of her.Although, it is always possible Bruce just doesn’t acknowledge the lives his parents led.“A lot of people say to Ben and I, ‘Oh, there s like this kind of almost stoic archetype that Thomas and Martha fall into, as his parents, how was it stepping into those roles?’ But I think that, to me, a lot of that seems like it s centered around Batman in the comics,” Paetz said. “Thomas and Martha are [the memory] of someone whose parents had died tragically young, [and] is their idea of who they might ve been — airbrushed and edited out and idealized, more than they actually were.”If that is the case, it allows for Batman’s eventual parents to become more fully realized here than ever before.(Photo by Epix)A handful of new faces will also be joining the show, including Simon Manyonda as Lucius Fox, Jessica De Gouw as Melanie — described by Heller as a “dangerous character. The more you re attracted to her, the more dangerous she becomes.” — and James Purefoy as Alfie’s old commanding officer, Captain Gulliver Troy. He also happens to be Melanie’s husband, which will add another layer of danger to Alfie’s interactions with her.But the first fresh face viewers will meet is Salt, a high value target to the Queen s league played by Edward Hogg. Though unassuming in his first few scenes, Heller noted “authoritarians come in all shapes and sizes” when asked about the character.“Everyone dismisses [someone like Salt] as too low class, too provincial, too vulgar, not a heroic enough a character. Those people can, especially in times of change, in times of conflict, push their way to the front,” Heller said. The producer noted Hogg plays both “the very real, serious threat” hidden in the character and “an amount of pantomime villainy” necessary in a show sharing its ancestry with Gotham.(Photo by Epix)And much like Harwood, Salt represents part of the rising tide of fascism within the series’ antagonists. To Heller, fascism is a tough opponent to crack as it is seductive — “What man has not pictured himself in knee-high leather boots?” he joked — and noted even Batman exhibits certain fascistic tendencies in his war on crime.“He doesn t form a political party. He doesn t make it political. He makes it personal,” Heller explained. “If you think the solution [to Gotham’s problems] is destruction, that s sort of fascism. That s the essence of it. Batman is precisely struggling with Christian charity and the old eye-for-an-eye stuff.”Paetz, meanwhile, hopes the tide of authoritarianism can subside.“Can anyone be inherently evil and therefore, will evil manifest itself in fascist forms of government throughout history? I hope the answer is no,” she said. “That people are not inherently evil, there is good, and we can nurture and fight our way out of this.”Bannon joked: “Bruno keeps writing things that keep happening in real life and we keep begging him, ‘just write a nice world where everyone gets on and it s all fine,’ but he keeps telling us that s not very interesting for a TV show.”Heller’s writing also makes the cast apprehensive about what they may find if the show ever moves to Gotham City. Paetz would like to see a kitschy America where “everybody is served by movie star.”(Photo by Epix)Aldridge admitted he wouldn t want to see the myth of America dispelled, even if it seems at odds with the U.S. that Thomas actually knows.“Whenever Thomas references Gotham, he says that it s complete chaos on the streets,” he said.Bannon, meanwhile, said, “I ve stopped trying to guess things with Pennyworth because I always get them wrong, or anything I guess is by no means as exciting as what Bruno comes up with. So who knows? I mean, I dread to think.”Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, EPIX will run four episodes across the next month. The final six episodes of season 2, which will feature the arrival of Batman’s ally Lucius Fox in larger role, will air later in 2021.Pennyworth season 2 premieres on Sunday, December 13 on Epix.On an Apple device? 诺克萨斯之手出装顺序 NBCUniversal s Saturday lineup at the winter Television Critics Association press tour came with lots of exciting news for critics: The Chucky TV series is happening on Syfy! A new show for Dwayne Johnson on NBC! Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are back as Golden Globes hosts! It also came with some frustrations, as NBC Entertainment chairman Paul Telegdy was also met with questions regarding former America s Got Talent co-host Gabrielle Union s complains of workplace toxicity, as well as Saturday Night Live s sudden firing of new hire Shane Gillis before the start of the sketch show s new season. (Rotten Tomatoes, like television channels NBC and Syfy, is also a division of NBCUniversal).Below, we ve gathered some intel TOP STORYMAKING NEW SHOWS FEELS LIKE CHILD S PLAY(Photo by Charles Sykes/NBCUniversal)While much of the day was focused on broadcast network NBC, there was still news coming from the cable networks under the NBCUniversal umbrella. One big one is that Syfy has given a straight-to-series order for Chucky, a television show about the cherubic homicidal doll from the Child s Play movies.According to the press release, the plot follows what happens after a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, causing an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Plus, it promises the arrival of enemies — and allies — from Chucky’s past [who threaten] to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster. Don Mancini, who wrote the 1988 film Child s Play, created and will show-run this series. He s also directing the first episode. He is executive producing along with David Kirschner, who produced that film, Nick Antosca and Harley Peyton.A premiere date has yet to be announced.THE GLOBES LEADING LADIES(Photo by Charles Sykes/NBCUniversal)Ricky Gervais promised that the 2020 Golden Globes ceremony would be his last as host, and it looks like he and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have made good on that; NBC announced on Saturday that close friends and network regulars, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, would return as co-hosts of the annual awards show.Poehler announced the news herself at TCA, appearing on stage at the beginning of the press day in place of NBC Entertainment executive vice president of communications Chip Sullivan. She also shared that NBC has renewed Making It, the feel-good crafting show hosted by herself and Nick Offerman, for a third season. NBC is also working with Fey and her 30 Rock showrunner Robert Carlock on an untitled comedy that stars Ted Danson as mayor of Los Angeles and also includes Holly Hunter and Bobby Moynihan.THE ROCK S NOSTALGIC NEW SHOW(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)Before he was a charismatic Tweeter, former wrestler, star of HBO s Ballers, and the world s highest paid actor June 2018–June 2019 (according to Forbes), Dwayne The Rock Johnson was a scrappy kid causing trouble. Johnson and Fresh Off the Boat’s Nahnatchka Khan will explore his trajectory for our entertainment in new series, The Young Rock. The sitcom, which Telegdy announced Saturday, has a straight-to-series order. While no premiere date has been announced, Johnson recorded a cellphone video for TCA that included him talking passionately about his roots and also promising that he would be featured in each episode.AGT, SNL AND NBC S BEHIND-THE-SCENES DRAMA(Photo by Trae Patton/NBC)Actress Gabrielle Union announced she d be leaving her post as co-host of America s Got Talent in December, citing a toxic work environment and causing NBC to launch an investigation into working conditions on the set of the popular reality competition show. Telegdy told journalists that this investigation is still on-going but he said that we will put new practices into place, if necessary. Telegdy was also asked if new vetting policies were put in place after sketch show Saturday Night Live hired and then eventually fired Shane Gillis. The comedian lost his job after journalist Seth Simons and others brought to light his history of saying racist comments on his podcast. The executive said that, while he does think SNL boss Lorne Michaels acted quickly, the incident was a learning moment for a lot of people. Still, he added that “vetting people is very triggering for people who live in a world of free speech and comedy that it is an enormously fine line and a gray area.”The latest NBC controversies follow other behind-the-scenes drama in recent years, including the ousting of Today show host Matt Lauer due to allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior, and NBC News refusal to air Ronan Farrow s reporting on Harvey Weinstein that went on to win a Pulitzer Prize and helped spawn the #MeToo movement.PEACOCK ON THE HORIZON(Photo by NBCUniversal)The news that reboots and other iterations of classic shows like Saved by the Bell and Punky Brewster are being developed for upcoming streaming service Peacock instead of NBC has raised eyebrows — and irked quite a few who don t want to deal with another streamer. Telegdy said this was a studio decision, but would I do Saved By the Bell again? Hell yeah! Telegdy also said his programming will appear on Peacock, saying of course we’ve been working in partnership with them, because it’s called Peacock for a reason. JIMMY FALLON S NEW SHOW, NEW AMSTERDAM RENEWAL NEWS, AND MORE(Photo by Andrew Lipovsky/NBC)In the meantime, NBC does have plenty of new and returning shows for you to watch. Telegdy announced Saturday that Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon will also host the network s new series That s My Jam. Based on musical segments from Fallon s late-night show, the comedy variety series will allow celebrities to compete with each other through song and dance. It will premiere during the Tokyo Olympics.NBC renewed New Amsterdam for three seasons, keeping the medical drama on the air at least through the 2022-23 television season, and renewed its successful holiday special event series Ellen’s Greatest Night of Giveaways, from executive producer Ellen DeGeneres, for a new season. The network also ordered 10-part global event series The New World from BBC Studios Natural History Unit, which is set to air in 2024. The series will scale across North America, Central America, and South America to explore the vast landscapes, remote wilderness and mysterious creatures of the region.Syfy announced that it is developing limited series The League of Pan, which picks up where Peter Pan left off and follows a group of misfit youths who refuse to grow up. Dominion s Brian McCauley Johnson is writing.THIS IS US WANTING MORE (Photo by Ron Batzdorff/NBC)NBC s press day also included a panel for its tear-jerker family drama This Is Us, where creator Dan Fogelman and the stars provided some teasers.Co-star Sterling K. Brown said the mid-season premiere, which airs January 14, will continue to delve into his character Randall s mental health and how he takes care of himself — what’s right and what’s wrong about how he takes care of himself and how he could potentially do a better job of that.” Fogelman added that it will also kick off what those involved with the show call trilogy episodes, meaning that it will connect with subsequent episodes that will deal with Randall s twin siblings, sister Kate (Chrissy Metz) and brother Kevin (Justin Hartley). As for internet fan theories that the show in its entirety exists in the mind of one of the characters, similar to the reveal at the end of St. Elsewhere, or that it s actually being told How I Met Your Mother–style with one character retelling the journey to others? I don’t think we’re going to pull the wool out of what the narrative thread of the story is, Fogelman said.
