2. HALLOWEEN KILLS IN 2020, AND HALLOWEEN ENDS IN 2021 Ryan FujitaniFollowing the 9 million domestic box office of last year s soft reboot of Halloween (Certified Fresh at 79%), Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions quickly confirmed plans for at least one more Halloween sequel. More recently, it was confirmed first that Jamie Lee Curtis will be returning, and that actually it would be two sequels that will be filming back-to-back. This week, Universal and Blumhouse made it official by announcing that the sequels will be titled Halloween Kills (10/16/2020) and Halloween Ends (10/15/2021). Both sequels will have the same director, David Gordon Green, who co-wrote them with actor Danny McBride, who also co-wrote last year s Halloween with Green.3. BEN AFFLECK AND MATT DAMON TO REUNITE FOR RIDLEY SCOTT S THE LAST DUEL (Photo by Sara Cozolino/Everett Collection)Before he directed films like Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator, Ridley Scott made his directorial debut in 1977 with The Duellists, about French officers during the Napoleonic Wars engaged in a series of duels in the early 1800s. Things came full circle this week with the news that Scott is now attached to direct The Last Duel, which is set in 14th century France (the distinction here is that The Last Duel concerns a medieval trial-by-combat between knights). The Last Duel will also be a reunion project for Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who will co-star and co-write (along with Nicole Holofcener). This week, Damon also signed on to star in an independent drama called Stillwater, which will also be set in France.4. WALKING DEAD SPINOFF MOVIE GETS THEATRICAL RELEASE(Photo by AMC)When Andrew Lincoln s Rick Grimes got on a helicopter last year and flew away from The Walking Dead, it was quickly announced that AMC had plans for a series of spinoff movies about the continuing adventures of Rick Grimes. At San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, the first teaser trailer for a Walking Dead movie debuted, but the biggest surprise had nothing to do with new plot twists. Instead, the surprise was that Universal Pictures has picked up the Walking Dead movie for theatrical distribution (i.e. not just as an AMC movie). The plan is still for three movies starring Andrew Lincoln, with Lincoln expected to spend two months on each movie. Andrew Lincoln also signed on this week to join Naomi Watts in Penguin Bloom, playing Watts husband as their family befriends an injured Australian magpie chick (bird).5. JAVIER BARDEM EXPECTED TO PLAY KING TRITON IN THE LITTLE MERMAID (Photo by ©Warner Bros.)Following the casting earlier this month of Halle Bailey as Ariel in Disney s live action remake of The Little Mermaid, fans quickly began speculating about who might play her father, King Triton. Most fans picked black actors, with Idris Elba being a popular choice, but some also chose Terry Crews. As it turns out, Disney instead went with Academy Award-winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Skyfall, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales). In the original animated movie, King Triton does not have his own song (he does have one in the stage musical called The World Above ), so it s probably likely that Bardem won t be singing in the live-action version either.6. BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH TO PORTRAY BRITISH ARTIST LOUIS WAIN(Photo by Jack English/© Weinstein Co.)The Cassius Marcellus Coolidge painting series Dogs Playing Poker is something of an iconic example of American kitsch. Around the same time in England, however, the artist Louis Wain had a similar series of paintings of cats that frequently had Big Eyes (a la Keane), exaggerated toothy smiles, or early examples of psychedelic art. It s crazy stuff, and now Benedict Cumberbatch (whose Doctor Strange also dabbled in psychedelia) is signed to star in the biopic Louis Wain for Amazon Studios. Cumberbatch s co-stars will include Claire Foy, Toby Jones, and Andrea Riseborough.7. HOPEFULLY JENNIFER LAWRENCE WON T GET STITCHES AS THE MOB GIRL(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Now that Dark Phoenix (Rotten at 23%) is done and over with, Jennifer Lawrence s time in the X-Men franchise is officially done, leaving her with no ongoing franchise (since The Hunger Games ended in 2015, and last year s Red Sparrow was a non-starter). It may well be that Lawrence will soon find another, but for now, she appears to be aiming for smaller movies. With that in mind, Jennifer Lawrence is now attached to star in Mob Girl, based on Teresa Carpenter s novel which was itself based on the true story of 1970s and 1980s mob informant Arlyne Weiss-Brickman. Mob Girl will reportedly depict how Weiss-Brickman grew up around wise guys, including running errands for them, but decided to cooperate with the FBI after a loan shark threatened to harm her teenage daughter. (Jennifer Lawrence is only 28 years old, so her daughter may be younger in this movie version.)8. CHRIS ROCK S SAW SPINOFF BUMPED UP FIVE MONTHS TO BE A BIG SUMMER RELEASE (Photo by Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images)One factor (besides, you know, all the torture) that has united all movies in the Saw franchise to date has been the release date, which has always been between October 23rd (Saw VI) and October 29th (Saw and Saw 3D). So, when Chris Rock announced that he was producing and starring in a Saw spinoff (sometimes called The Organ Donor online), the presumed release date was in October of 2020. Perhaps tying into the film s premise as a Saw spinoff and not a Saw movie exactly, Lionsgate this week bumped up Chris Rock s film to a release date of May 15, 2020 (against the Scooby-Doo reboot Scoob). Rock will star in the film as a police detective investigating a series of gruesome crimes, with Samuel L. Jackson also on board to play Rock s character s father.9. JENNIFER LOPEZ MAY DIRECT (HERSELF IN) THE GODMOTHER  (Photo by Peter Iovino/©CBS Films)The ensemble stripper crime comedy Hustlers (9/13/2019) is now less than two months away, but one of its stars, Jennifer Lopez, is already preparing for new films in 2020 and beyond. Following flops like UglyDolls, Poms, and Best of Enemies, STX Entertainment is reportedly looking for big stars for their next moves, and one of them is going to be Jennifer Lopez. Jenny from the Block is now producing and will star in a drug lord drama called The Godmother for STXfilms. Lopez may also make her directorial debut with the film, in which she plays real life Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco, who was (real life spoiler warning) shot and killed in 2012 at the age of 69 (Jennifer Lopez is only 50). Lopez s next film after Hustlers will be the romantic comedy Marry Me, costarring Owen Wilson. This week, the Marry Me cast expanded as Lopez and Wilson will now be joined by Sarah Silverman and British actor John Bradley, who has a lot more time on his hands now that his run as Samwell Tarly on HBO s Game of Thrones is done.Like this? While COVID-19 continues to impact the TV industry in big ways, talk show hosts try to keep giving us things to laugh about (including a brief comeback from Rosie O Donnell to help her fellow entertainers), Netflix gives us a new way to be socially less distant, and more in the week s top TV news.TOP STORYNetflix Party Makes It Possible to Have a Group Bingewatch (and Not Just a Virtual One)(Photo by Chris Haston/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal via Getty Images via Getty Images)Binge-watching episodes of The Office for the 37th time just got more fun. Thanks to a new Google Chrome extension called Netflix Party (available here), you can have movie nights and group TV viewing parties of your favorite Netflix programming. And not only does the extension allow you to watch programming at the same time on your computers, but Netflix Party also features a chat room, so you can quote Michael Scott’s wackiest words to each other, or debate whether or not “Scott’s Tots” is the worst Office episode of all time. We kid. There’s no debate. It is absolutely the worst Office episode of all time.Hopefully you stashed away plenty of snack fare, because COVID-19 social distancing just got the tiniest bit more bearable.Update: Netflix also announced that the company has created a 0 million emergency support fund for entertainment industry workers. Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a statement:The Covid-19 crisis is devastating for many industries, including the creative community. Almost all television and film production has now ceased globally leaving hundreds of thousands of crew and cast without jobs. These include electricians, carpenters, drivers, hair and makeup artists and more, many of whom are paid hourly wages and work on a project-to-project basis. This community has supported Netflix through the good times, and we want to help them through these hard times, especially while governments are still figuring out what economic support they will provide. So we’ve created a 0 million fund to help with hardship in the creative community. Most of the fund will go towards support for the hardest hit workers on our own productions around the world. We’re in the process of working out exactly what this means, production by production. This is in addition to the two weeks pay we’ve already committed to the crew and cast on productions we were forced to suspend last week.Beyond helping workers on our own productions, we also want to support the broader film and television industry. So million of the fund will go to third parties and non-profits providing emergency relief to out-of-work crew and cast in the countries where we have a large production base.Netflix will provide million each to the SAG-AFTRA Covid-19 Disaster Fund, the Motion Picture and Television Fund, and the Actors Fund Emergency Assistance in the U.S., and million between the AFC and Fondation des Artistes. Additional allocations worldwide will be announced next week.Lord of the Rings, The Witcher Among the Latest Coronavirus-Related Production HaltsAmazon Prime s The Lord of the Rings series was shut down March 16, according to a memo acquired by The New Zealand Herald. This is done in an environment where travel restrictions directed at the control of Covid-19 are issued daily by New Zealand and most other countries we are doing this to minimise stress on the resources and infrastructures around us by doing our part to reduce population density in our communities and daily activities, in efforts to help reduce the spread of the virus, the memo read in part.Netflix similarly shut down production on season 2 of The Witcher for two weeks, Deadline reported, noting that crew will continue to be paid during the hiatus. The show is filmed around 40 miles west of London at Arborfield Studios. Meanwhile, another Netflix production, The Crown was so near completion on season 4 that filming continued this week; though the production wrapped early, according to EW.Plus, that Friends reunion special that was going to be a highlight of HBO Max’s debut month in May might have to wait. THR.com reports the show, which will feature Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer getting together for an unscripted celebration of the 10-season sitcom, was scheduled to tape next week, but now could be pushed off for a May tape date, because of coronavirus concerns. HBO Max will be the streaming home for the series when it launches. In other coronavirus-related TV rescheduling news:American Idol suspended production and sent contestants home for now. EW reports The Resident, The Good Doctor, and Station 19 have donated boxes of masks, gloves, and gowns to hospitals in Atlanta, Vancouver, and Los Angeles.TV writers rooms have found a way to keep working – offering hope that new series will launch and that we’ll see new seasons of our favorite shows – thanks to virtual meetings via the Zoom app. (THR)The Kentucky Derby has been postponed for the first time since World War II. MIPTV Online+ will launch on March 30 and be available free to those who were registered for the Cannes event. The Dr. Oz Show will be filmed remotely, after a staffer on Dr. Mehmet Oz’s daytime series tested positive for coronavirus. (Page Six)Nervous about conflicting information about the pandemic, Whoopi Goldberg began performing her co-hosting duties on The View from from home this week. Meanwhile, Today host Savannah Guthrie and weatherman Al Roker are also performing their morning show duties from home.Showtime will begin airing just one new episode of its Don Cheadle comedy Black Monday, instead of two, per week, beginning on March 22.Vice TV’s Vice News Tonight series has gone on hiatus for an indefinite time.In the rare piece of good news in TV land this week: ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC saw a three percent increase in viewership for the week ending March 15, when working at home and social distancing became a reality for many viewers. The week’s top shows: NCIS with 10.7 million viewers, 60 Minutes with 10.4, Young Sheldon with 8.8, The Voice with 8.7, and The Bachelor with 8.4.But The New York Times warns that while social distancing has led to an uptick in viewers across network, cable, and streaming services, as the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic grows, viewers could soon be looking to cut the cord and cancel their streaming subscriptions.Talk Shows Keep the Home Fires Burning on DigitalJimmy Fallon is also promising a nightly YouTube version of The Tonight Show: Home Edition, with his wife as camera person, songs and jokes, a spotlight on a different charity each night, and guest appearances by his kids. Jimmy Kimmel is also offering fans episodes of Quarantine Minilogues from his home, The Daily Show host Trevor Noah launched The Daily Social Distancing Show from his home (specifically, his couch), and Stephen Colbert is also dropping bon mots from various locations in his house, including the bathtub.Samantha Bee has launched a daily digital series – Beeing at Home with Samantha Bee! – in which “Sam has relocated to a rustic woodshed to teach everyone how to chop their own wood for warmth while practicing social distancing,” according to TBS. “She gives an answer to the question of how much wood would a late-night host chop? It’s one, one piece of wood.”Conan O’Brien announced he will resume his TBS late-night talk show Conan on March 30, making the show the first late-night show to return to a regular schedule. He will be filming via iPhone, without an audience. His staffers will work from home, and guests will appear via video. In a release, O’Brien joked, “The quality of my work will not go down, because technically, that s not possible. The Rosie O’Donnell Show is back … for one night only, and only online. But O’Donnell, whose Emmy-winning talk show ran for six seasons in 1996-2002, has gathered a line-up of A-listers to appear via social distancing-friendly video from their homes. The special, which will raise money for The Actors Fund to benefit entertainment and performing arts professionals who are out of work because of the coronavirus, will include appearances by Beth Behrs, Nate Berkus, Tituss Burgess, Norbert Leo Butz, Kristin Chenoweth, Darren Criss, Gloria Estefan, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Harvey Fierstein, David Foster, Morgan Freeman, Neil Patrick Harris, Judith Light, Barry Manilow, Audra McDonald, Katharine McPhee, Idina Menzel, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Billy Porter, Andrew Rannells, Chita Rivera, and Ben Vereen, plus dozens more. Faith-based films don t exactly boast a heavenly track record on the Tomatometer, as they re frequently preachy and overtly sentimental, even if they re competently filmed and acted. But since they typically cater to a very specific audience one that doesn t mind a bit of sermonizing the studios that release them rarely allow for early screenings. Such is the case for this week s Overcomer, a drama about a small-town high school basketball coach (Alex Kendrick, also the director and co-writer of the film) who is asked to head up the cross-country team as well and bonds with one runner, Hannah (Aryn Wright-Thompson), who must overcome her asthma to become a winner. We d love to tell you what the critics thought of this movie, but almost none of them has seen it, and at the end of the day, their reviews probably won t matter a whole lot to the folks who will turn up for this film.
Summer is almost over, and as we enter the month of August, the big-name blockbusters are much fewer and farther between. The middle of the month boasts a whopping 10 new wide releases across just two weeks, but few of them would be considered must-see entertainment by most. That said, we ve still got a smattering of noteworthy films on the way, including the Fast Furious spinoff starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, a horror flick produced by Guillermo del Toro, and a raunchy coming-of-age comedy. Read on to find out the five most anticipated movies of August, as voted by Rotten Tomatoes users and our fans on social media.1. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) 67%3,845 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Instagram and Facebook fans, #2 pick by our Twitter fansOpens August 2It ll likely surprise no one that this film is the most anticipated of the month. Not only is the Fast Furious franchise one of the most popular and profitable around the world, but Hobbs Shaw unites two of its most bankable stars, gives them plenty of scenery to chew and one-liners to spout at each other, and pits them against a superpowered Idris Elba, with copious mayhem and vehicular pyrotechnics to boot. It also helps that this August, like so many Augusts past, is chock-full of second-tier summer fare all jostling for a slice of the box office pie. Hobbs Shaw knows what it is a hypertuned injection of adrenaline for thrill-seeking audiences and doesn t pretend to be anything more, which is exactly how fans like it.2. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019) 77%1,514 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Twitter fans, #2 pick by our Facebook and Instagram fansOpens August 9Fan favorite director Guillermo del Toro s name is all over the marketing for Scary Stories, even though he s not the one behind the lens for this one. While André Øvredal is the man at the helm, the film fits rather neatly into del Toro s wheelhouse, so fans are excited to see what he is able to bring to the project as a producer. Of course, the main inspiration for the film is the series of children s horror books written by Alvin Schwartz, most notable for illustrator Stephen Gammel s terrifying artwork, and brought to life on screen as the manifestation of a young girl s secret writings. Scary Stories ranked at the top of the list for our Twitter fans this month, while our Facebook and Instagram fans voted it the second most anticipated.3. Good Boys (2019)1,271 Want-to-See Votes#3 pick by our Instagram and Twitter fans, #4 pick by our Facebook fansOpens August 16Coming-of-age films usually come in two varieties: the heartfelt drama and the raucous comedy. Good Boys fits squarely into the latter category, setting a trio of almost-teens (Jacob Tremblay, Brady Noon, and Keith L. Williams) loose on a caper to replace a damaged drone that takes them to places and through situations they ve never experienced before. It also happens to be rated R, implying these kids will get up to some very adult shenanigans. The film premiered earlier this year at South by Southwest to fairly strong reviews, and its promise of outlandish comedy was enough to propel it to #3 in our Instagram and Twitter polls.4a. Ready or Not (2019) 88%

King of the Crop: Lego Movie Leads, But Joins List of Diminishing Sequels(Photo by Warner Bros.)Another early record of 2019 that was expected to fall was Glass’ top opening weekend of .3 million. Lowball projections on The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (84% on the Tomatometer) were at million with an uptick to a potential million. That estimate was reasonable given the diminishing returns of the series: 2014’s The Lego Movie (95%) opened to million and finished with over 7 million; 2017 spin-off, The Lego Batman Movie (90%), also opening in February, began with million and ended with 5 million; and in the same year, the September release of The Lego Ninjago Movie (56%) grossed a total of just million, but had little connection to the other films. This is why the .4 million start for the sequel is such an eye-raiser.The million production has history on its side for at least cracking the 0 million mark. The only animated film to open with more than million and not reach the milestone was the R-rated Sausage Party. But anything less than 0 million total is going to feel like a real disappointment. The first two Lego movies were bigger successes in North America than internationally with totals that came in at 9 and 1 million, respectively. So if the law of diminishing returns is any indication, The Second Part is not going to reach the 0 million worldwide it is going to need to break even. Looking at sequels over the years, some of the biggest drops in opening weekends are as follows:Alice in Wonderland (2010) / Alice Through the Looking Glass (6.1 million to .8 million)Bruce Almighty / Evan Almighty (.9 million to .1 million)The Lego Movie / The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part ( million to .4 million)Clash of the Titans (2010) / Wrath of the Titans (.2 million to .4 million)Sex and the City / Sex and the City 2 ( million to million)Ghost Rider / Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (.3 million to .1 million)Happy Feet / Happy Feet 2 (.5 million to .2 million)Rotten Returns: The Prodigy Sinks to the Bottom of the Box Office Horror Class(Photo by Orion Pictures)This week, the resurfaced Orion Pictures dropped a trailer for the new Child’s Play reboot being released this summer. Hopefully, they will see better returns for their creepy-doll film than their creepy-kid film this weekend. The Prodigy opened to just million, which is weak even for February horror. Last year’s Winchester made .3 million over Super Bowl weekend. Hell Fest (.1 million opening) and The Possession of Hannah Grace (.4 million) each failed to reach million total. Even for a mere million price tag (before distribution and advertising costs), The Prodigy (45% on the Tomatometer) is not looking like much of a winner for Orion.Top 10 and Beyond: Men and Pursuit Don’t Live Up to Predecessors(Photo by Paramount Pictures)What Men Want (48% on the Tomatometer) is not the same story that Nancy Meyers’ What Women Want was back in 2000 when it opened to million and grossed over 2 million. But million is still a decent start for the million production from Paramount. The film should see a Valentine’s Day bump on Thursday even with competition from Rebel Wilson s Isn t It Romantic and finish with over million. The final new release of the week, the darkly comic revenge tale Cold Pursuit, an American remake of Norwegian film, In Order of Disappearance, made .8 million, which is less than recent Liam Neeson films, The Commuter (.7 million) and Run All Night ( million). The latest film’s 74% Tomatometer score is Neeson’s best starring vehicle with critics since 2012’s The Grey (79%), however — though the actor did appear in acclaimed films Widows (91%), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (91%), Silence (83%), and A Monster Calls (86%).M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, which had led the box office for the past three weeks, dropped to fifth place for a total gross of .4 million so far, which is nearly million behind the pace of The Village, but the film is well into the black for Universal and Blumhouse with over 1 million worldwide. The Upside jumped over Glass on the chart this week after just an 17% drop, and with nearly million, it will be taking a serious run at 0 million. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse crossed 0 million worldwide while the fifth-highest grossing film of 2018, Aquaman, is just a bit more than million away from becoming the 20th highest-grossing film of all-time worldwide. This Time Last Year: Terrorists, Rabbits, and S M Led the Way at the Box Office(Photo by Universal Pictures)Five days before Valentine’s Day, audiences got the final chapter of Fifty Shades Freed which led the way with .5 million. While mom and dad were seeing that, their kids were in the next theater over watching Peter Rabbit. The bunny tale finished second with million, but ultimately outgrossed Christian and Anastasia 5.2 million to 0.4 million. Clint Eastwood’s first film of 2018, The 15:17 To Paris, made .5 million for third place, helping to knock the three-peating Jumanji: Welcome to Jungle back to fourth where it crossed 5 million. The top 10 films grossed 3.8 million and averaged just 51% on the Tomatometer. This week’s top 10 grossed an estimated .4 million and averaged 59.3% with critics here.On the Vine: Romance, Horror, and Cyberpunk Invade Valentine’s Day(Photo by 20th Century Fox)It is going to be a crowded Valentine’s Day week at the box office. Ghcxuf Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images/Disney/Pixar Yes, please! is Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley s response when asked if he wants to talk about Keanu Reeves. We re at a press summit with the filmmakers for Woody s latest and possibly final big-screen adventure – a story that will take the diligent cowboy and his friends on a road trip, where they ll encounter a variety pack of characters, from a murderous 1950s doll to a spork with existential questions, to a dim but enthusiastic stuntman. Duke Caboom is the motorcycle-ridin , pose-slapping stunt toy, and he s voiced by Keanu Reeves, who s currently riding another crest of global goodwill for John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum (absolutely, a movie where you hand-murder dudes by the dozens makes you more loved in the world) and viral acts of mundane kindness. We went after Canadian actors, Cooley says of the process of finding the right person for Duke Caboom. He was the first one on our list, and I m so thrilled that he said yes. Even before signing on, Reeves visited the Pixar campus in Emeryville, California, and brought the same open-road philosophical inquiries he s associated with and loved for all over. What do you think he sounds like? Reeves asked. What do you think drives him? But for a character whose entire existence is pixels and voice, Reeves managed to demonstrate a human physicality to the Duke that made him the first-and-only choice. At one point, he just got up on the table, Cooley says. Imagine you re just sitting down there eating lunch. Hoo! Hah! Huh! He s just doing these poses. I m like, This is it. This is incredible.' (Photo by Disney/Pixar)Though getting Reeves for Toy Story 4 was a dream casting coup, he seemed to get just as much as out of it as the Pixar filmmakers, with Reeves enthusiasm carrying over into the recording booth. Every time we recorded with him, he just had the biggest smile on his face, Cooley continues. Just so much fun. I can t speak enough about how awesome he is. But Reeves isn t the only new celebrity voice joining Toy Story 4. He ll be joined by the likes of Christina Hendricks as Gabby Gabby, the doll who wants to rip Woody s voice box out of him; Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, the reuniting comedy duo who voice two sarcastic and boisterous carnival plush prizes stapled to a wall; and Tony Hale as Forky, the cobbled-together piece of trash given life by a little girl s imagination. And Annie Potts is returning to the series some 20 (!) years since Toy Story 2 as Bo, who s lived a big and adventurous life beyond suburbia. With her taking a co-star role among Woody and Buzz, and Gabby Gabby as the first female villain of the franchise, women are driving the plot in Toy Story 4. It all adds to the unexpected turns Pixar hopes to enthrall a new generation – and the ones who ve been around since 1995 – of audiences. If all else fails, just picture Keanu Reeves chopping the air for your pleasure as you munch on the popcorn.Toy Story 4 is in theaters June 21.Like this? (Photo by © Columbia TriStar Television/ Courtesy: Everett Collection.)It s been 22 years since the final episode of Seinfeld, aptly titled The Finale, first aired on May 14, 1998. It was one of the most highly anticipated hours of television ever broadcast, attracting a record-breaking 76 million viewers. But when all was said and done, the finale drew the ire of fans and critics alike. There was no happy ending here — and television audiences just weren t having it. In the 20-plus years since The Finale aired, the sitcom has evolved in complexity and ambition, and the show s co-creator, Larry David, has pioneered the cringe-comedy genre with Curb Your Enthusiasm. Comedy fans credit Seinfeld as the start of much of that growth – even as they lament the disappointing way the series wrapped up. Now, to celebrate the 22th anniversary of the show s end, we re here to say the finale wasn t all that bad. In fact, hear us out, here: the Seinfeld series finale was actually pretty darn great. In The Finale, Jerry and George (Jason Alexander) receive some fantastic news when their sitcom Jerry — which was shelved five years prior — is given the green light by NBC. To celebrate, the duo, along with Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and Kramer (Michael Richards), take the network s private plane on a trip to Paris; of course, they never make it to France. After a Kramer-led mishap, the aircraft is forced to make an emergency landing in the fictional town of Latham, Massachusetts. While waiting for the plane issue to be fixed, the gang goes into town and ends up witnessing a carjacking. Instead of intervening to help the overweight victim (played by late comedian John Pinette), they stand on the sidelines, take a video of the crime on Kramer s camera, and make fat-shaming jokes about the victim, to boot. Minutes later, the group is hauled away to jail for violating the town s new Good Samaritan law, which basically makes it illegal to do nothing when witnessing a fellow citizen in crisis.(Photo by © Columbia TriStar Television/ Courtesy: Everett Collection.)What follows is a highly-publicized court case that puts Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer (aka The New York Four ) on trial for their crime. And to fully drive home how guilty the gang is, the prosecuting attorney brings in a load of cameo witnesses from the show s nine-season run, among them: the Soup Nazi (Larry Thomas), Leslie The Low Talker (Wendel Meldrum), Elaine s ex David Puddy (Patrick Warburton), Jerry s ex Sidra Holland (Teri Hatcher), and New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner (voiced by Larry David). The cavalcade of witnesses gives audiences one last satisfying plot point in each of these characters story arcs, and acts as a hard-to-swallow reminder that the heroes they spent the last nine years with were actually anything but. After years of self-centered behavior, of not caring at all how their actions impacted any, and every, one they came in contact with — from Jerry assaulting and stealing a loaf of rye bread from an elderly woman named Mabel (Frances Bay) to George s deflating Trivial Pursuit mishap with the Bubble Boy — the group is found guilty for violating the Good Samaritan law and are put in jail for a year s time. The final moments find them behind bars, without any show of remorse, continuing their signature meaningless banter, as the camera pans away and eventually fades to black.People were not happy with this choice. Entertainment Weekly called it off-key and bloated, USA Today referred to the episode as dismal, giving it one-and-a-half stars, and Newsday asserted that The Finale was a major comedic disaster. The ninth and final season is Seinfeld s only Rotten season according to the Tomatometer, and the Critics Consensus – which reflects the sentiments of the critics – speaks to fans disappointment in its final flourish: the cynical show about nothing goes out defiantly on its own terms – even if means alienating fans who may have wanted things to end differently. (Photo by Joe Del Valle / ©Castle Rock Entertainment / Courtesy Everett Collection)Those assessments may have been somewhat correct at the time, but hindsight has proven the episode had way more going for it than Larry David walking away into the sunset with his middle finger held high. And it has a lot to do with going out defiantly on its own terms. I think the thing about finales is everybody writes their own finale in their head, whereas if they just tune in during the week to a normal show, they’re surprised by what’s going on, David explained to Grantland about the seemingly-impossible mission of satisfying expectations. They haven’t written it beforehand, they don’t know what the show is. But for a finale, they go, Oh, well this should happen to George, and Jerry and Elaine should get together, and all that. They’ve already written it, and often they’re disappointed, because it’s not what they wrote. Seinfeld changed the sitcom game when it arrived on the TV scene. But the program, which was marketed as the show about nothing, revealed itself over time as something more. It was a show filled with dark humor and bleak topics immersed in the everyday minutiae of city life; it was a program where a self-centered comedian and his privileged friends were unaffected and unchanged by the world around them. Seinfeld wasn t a program about nothing; the series explored the lives of a group of borderline nihilist New Yorkers who learned absolutely nothing and never ever changed, as those around them grew.As part of the plan that Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld put into place, their show, which prompted NBC to build its Must-See TV lineup, was never about teaching life lessons or handing out moral epiphanies. There was absolutely no character growth here. This all makes sense when you remember the two important rules the show s writers had to follow: no hugging and no learning. While the central crew may not have evolved into better people throughout the series nine-year run, the show taught television viewers that comedy could exist in a multitude of lanes. Sitcoms may still operate on the formula of dishing out morals and supplying growth to their lead characters, but there was something a bit too relatable about the way Seinfeld handled its final bow. We see it in the way The Finale depicts the highly-publicized trial as a televised spectacle not that different from the O.J. Simpson court proceedings that kicked off the Court TV trend just five years prior. The inclusion of the Johnnie Cochran–esque lawyer, Jackie Chiles (Phil Morris), and Geraldo Rivera as himself, commentating on the event, really helped bring to life the ridiculousness of the media circus. Did Seinfeld stay true to its formula through its nine-season duration? Maybe. When you view the series as the completely character-driven story that it was, then that changes things. Without each and every quirky role introduced on the series — and the endless supply of quotable lines the show birthed into the pop-culture vernacular — Seinfeld wouldn t have been such a success. And given that this was a show inspired by Jerry Seinfeld s life as a comedian, where his stand-up routines so famously picked apart the mundane details of everyday life, the lack of interest in digging under the surface and figuring out how any of these people tick makes even more sense. Remember: No hugging and no learning.According to Grantland, David was not interested in an emotional ride, and neither was Jerry. The show maintained protocol from episode one. Yearning for some sort of epiphany that would ve wrapped things up in a happily-ever-after bow is understandable, but that was never part of the plan. Jerry s postal-worker nemesis and neighbor Newman (Wayne Knight), who gets some oddball justice in the finale after his request to join the gang on their trip to Paris is turned down, ends up foreshadowing the events that transpire. In typical Newman fashion, he passionately delivers a vengeful, Pulp Fiction–style tirade: “Hear me and hear me well. The day will come. Oh yes, mark my words, Seinfeld — your day of reckoning is coming. When an evil wind will blow through your little play world, and wipe that smug smile off your face. And I’ll be there, in all my glory, watching – watching as it all comes crumbling down.” Jerry s smile may not have been ultimately wiped from his face — we see him doing stand-up in prison as the credits roll — but he, along with George, Elaine, and Kramer, do end up actually learning that there s a limit to bad behavior, even for these four. And so do we.As the guilty verdict is read, and the sentence is handed down, Judge Arthur Vandelay (Stanley Anderson) eloquently puts their crimes against humanity into perspective: Your callous indifference and utter disregard for everything that is good and decent has rocked the very foundations upon which our society is built.  In today s fast-moving disconnected age of social media and fake news, the impact of these words have only grown in relevancy. Who knew at the end of the day, that this show about nothing would actually have something important to say? The writers may have honored the no hugging rule, but when all was said and done, there was a bit of a lesson to be had after all. The series finale of Seinfeld,  The Finale,  first aired on NBC on May 14, 1998.

Sick of the rumors and the tabloids, musician Demi Lovato told journalists during a panel for her upcoming YouTube docu-series, Dancing with the Devil that she wants to set the record straight about what led to her 2018 overdose — and the ramifications from it.In the docuseries, she discusses that she had three strokes and a heart attack after the 2018 incident. Unfortunately, I was left with brain damage and I still deal with the effects of that today. I don t drive a car because I have blind spots in my vision, she said during the panel. I also, for a long time, had a really hard time reading it was a big deal when I was able to read out of a book, which was two months later because my vision was so blurry. I dealt with a lot of the repercussions and I feel like they, kind of, are still there to remind me of what could happen if I ever get into a dark place again. And I m grateful for those reminders. I m so grateful that I was someone that didn’t have to do a lot of rehabbing. The rehabbing came on the emotional side and the therapeutic side internally. Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil premieres March 23 on YouTube.Girls5Eva Isn t a Regular Show — It s a Cool ShowGirls5Eva is a musical comedy about four women who were members of a 1990s girl group. Created by Meredith Scardino, it will have plenty of catchy musical numbers. But like fellow executive producers Tina Fey, Robert Carlock and Jeff Richmond s Netflix series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, all the fun and glitter will mask something much more serious.“I wanted to write a show about women in my age group and be able to talk about all the things that you go through as being a woman in your forties,” Scardino said during the Peacock show s TCA press panel, which included stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell, and Busy Philipps who play the now (more) adult members of an girl group that was hot in the 1990s.There is also the subject of owning your narrative. As young popstars, Girls5Eva had no control over what they sang, wore or did, said Philipps, a professed fan of real-life girl group legends, Spice Girls. Now they re in a different place. How do you take ownership of your own story and rewrite it? Girls5Eva will premiere soon on Peacock.Plus: Peacock s Punky Power!, Ex-Rated Digs Into Past Relationships, a John Wayne Gacy Docu-Series, and MorePeacock s revival of Punky Brewster — or as star Soleil Moon Frye called it during the show s TCA panel, a continuation — premieres February 25 on Peacock. Like the original from the 1980s, it is a multi-camera comedy about the importance of family (however that word may be defined). But, also like the original, it gets into some heavy topics. The new version introduces Izzy (Quinn Copeland), a foster child who — like Punky — was abandoned by her mother. The original Punky Brewster dealt with so many real issues and for us creatively, to keep that authenticity was absolutely pivotal and important to all of us involved, Frye said. And so the original Punky had humor and laughter. And you also were dealing with pain. And life is messy and we go through rollercoasters of emotions. And so, to continue that honesty was incredibly important to everyone.

九游会平台 (Photo by Buena Vista Pictures)In the summer of 1989, Tim Burton’s Batman took the box office by surprise, decades before movies based on comic books could be counted on to draw in the crowds. Hot on his heels the following summer came another movie based on a famous comic character, this one from the funny pages of the Tribune Company’s syndicate, Dick Tracy. The 1990 adaptation of Chester Gould’s yellow hat-and-coat-wearing detective finds a man too over-committed to his endless quest to put the City’s big bad mob boss Alphonse “Big Boy” Caprice (Al Pacino) out-of-business. It’s a full-time job that leaves Tracy’s girlfriend Tess Trueheart (Glenne Headly) feeling left out and worried about their future together. But their lives take a turn when Tracy rescues a wisecracking street kid (Charlie Korsmo) who wants to stay with the couple, a smooth-talking femme fatale named Breathless Mahoney (Madonna) enters the picture, and Big Boy escalates his turf war to wipe out Tracy. It’s a colorful fantasy world frozen in the early 1930s in a place where the good guys wear badges and the bad guys are noticeably grotesque figures with names like Pruneface, Flattop, and Mumbles.Although Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy didn’t quite win over audiences and critics as strongly as Batman did the previous year, here s why it remains a movie worth revisiting 30 years later for its wild direction, astonishing production design, and catchy music.WARREN BEATTY S DEDICATION TO THE SOURCE MATERIAL IS CLEARLY EVIDENT(Photo by (c)Touchstone courtesy Everett Collection)Part of the appeal of 1990 s Dick Tracy is that it doesn’t remotely resemble reality. Beatty, a fan of the Dick Tracy comic strips from back in the day, chose to stick to the source’s two-dimensional layout, limited color palette, and cartoon-esque aesthetics. According to Vox, the actor turned director and producer had first tried to adapt Dick Tracy for the screen back in the 1970s. A number of notable directors were considered for the project, including Steven Spielberg, John Landis, Walter Hill, and Martin Scorsese, but ultimately, Beatty gave himself the job.Introduced in 1931 at the tail-end of Prohibition, Dick Tracy quickly became a popular comic strip crimefighter who battled scary-looking mob bosses and shifty gangsters. Before Beatty’s movie, Dick Tracy enjoyed a brief run as the hero of serials and movies in the 1930s and 40s, as well as occasional TV appearances in the 1950s and 60s. Many of these adaptations jettisoned the character’s original backstory and supporting players, but Beatty wanted to do justice to his first big-budget adaptation. For Beatty, that meant going all-in on Tracy’s original aesthetic, which mostly took its cues from how newspapers cheaply printed its comic pages; there would be limited colors and patterns onMilena Canonero’s costumes. While Beatty already came to the starring role with his character’s square jaw, make-up artists John Caglione Jr. and Doug Drexler would create the monstrous features of the mobsters. The screenplay by writing duo Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. (Top Gun, The Secret of My Success) includes many characters from the original comic strip series like Tess, the orphan who names himself after Dick Tracy, and the rogues gallery. Although the film didn’t become a roaring success at the box office, it still made its parent distributor Disney over 0 million at the domestic box office, and it went on to earn seven Academy Away nominations –– including nods to Pacino, Canonero, and cinematographer Vittorio Storaro –– and win three Oscars for Best Makeup, Best Art Direction, and Best Original Song.THE FILM S EYE-POPPING PRODUCTION DESIGN IS A SIGHT TO BEHOLD(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures)There’s a good reason Dick Tracy took home the Oscar for Best Art Direction: It’s truly stunning what Beatty, production designer Richard Sylbert, and art director Rick Simpson accomplished on an astonishing scale. Before computer technology could easily and cheaply create worlds beyond our reality, filmmakers had to rely on old school practical effects to make these made-up worlds appear on screen. That meant tricking out a lot of backlot space to look less like our world and more like Tracy’s, carefully set-decorating each room to look as they would in a comic strip and using matte paintings and other visual effects to bring the inky pages of a newspaper to life.Under the lens of cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now, The Last Emperor), the colors of the sets and costumes brightly pop off the screen, much in the same way that comic strips in a newspaper would appear after pages of black-and-white text. The lighting in the movie sometimes casts a red or green glow over the wet pavement, and sometimes the shadows on Tracy’s face make him appear more like the hand-drawn character on the movie poster than Beatty. Vanity Fair noted how Storaro’s shooting style on the film helped create the illusion that this was a panel-by-panel Dick Tracy adventure. Through careful composition, his still camera would frame each moment as if it were a panel in the comic strip, taking the idea of a comic adaptation to a whole new level years before movies like 300 or Sin City did the same.AL PACINO S UNHINGED PERFORMANCE IS BOTH SURPRISINGLY INTENSE AND FUNNY(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures)As in the comic strips, Beatty’s Tracy is a pretty straightforward guy. He loves his girlfriend, he busts organized crime rings, and he’s unsure about settling down and adopting the orphan he rescued. That’s a bit of a meta-joke on Beatty’s longtime bachelor status, but it also works in the case of his workaholic detective. He doesn’t have the baggage of a lost home planet like Superman or the tragic death of his parents like Batman. He’s a straight man in need of a foil, a Joker to his Batman if you will.In the movie, it’s up to Al Pacino as Tracy’s nemesis Big Boy to serve the film its dose of chaotic energy. This is possibly the actor’s most scream-heavy role, which is pretty stiff competition in a filmography that includes Scarface and Any Given Sunday. Even under prosthetics, nothing stops the actor from barking commands at Tracy, his bumbling goons, and his reluctant new gangster moll, Breathless Mahoney. Flanking Pacino are a number of famous faces, some almost unrecognizable under layers of makeup, like Paul Sorvino, Dustin Hoffman, Dick Van Dyke, Mandy Patinkin, and James Caan. But no one, not even the calm, cool-headed Tracy, can hold a candle to the fiery rage of Big Boy’s apoplectic tantrums.DANNY ELFMAN AND STEPHEN SONDHEIM S SCORE IS UNFORGETTABLEBatman may have paired up composer Danny Elfman with Prince, but Dick Tracy brought Elfman’s bombastic orchestral superhero theme music together with Stephen Sondheim’s sensitive and catchy Broadway-esque tunes. Elfman’s opening theme captures the danger, romance and adventure the movie has to offer; though the score vaguely sounds like his theme for Batman, there are no ominous notes of doom and gloom. Instead, there’s a sense of mystery and grandiosity, as well as a frenetic feel, as if Tracy were searching for Big Boy in the sheet music. Then, it swells to the romantic ties between Tracy and Trueheart, a constant throughout the story.Madonna and Sondheim round out the film’s music with a set of five show-stopping numbers, including “Sooner or Later” and “Back in Business.” The former is a bluesy number that explains Breathless’ insistence on seducing Tracy away from Trueheart because she “always gets” her man, while the latter is an upbeat jazz song that comes at an inopportune time for Tracy, and they make up two more reasons Dick Tracy is so fun to watch all these years later.THE MOVIE IS FULL OF CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD REFERENCES(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures)Matte paintings aren’t the only old Hollywood tricks up Beatty’s yellow sleeves. Beatty, who had come to Hollywood in the waning days of the studio era, incorporated a number of homages to classic movies, the most noticeable of which is Breathless Mahoney, a film noir-inspired femme fatale given a Marilyn Monroe-inspired ‘do. In one scene, she’s even wearing a two-piece white suit that looks a lot like one of the costumes Rita Hayworth wears in Gilda, in which she plays the new wife of a club owner who, like Breathless, also sings and flirts with the main character. From its start, the comic series had always been criticized for its violence, and the movie version is no different. There are car explosions, shootouts, attempted (and successful) murders, and lots of gun pointing between cops and criminals. Since Dick Tracy’s comic strip debuted around the same time as gangster movies like The Public Enemy (1931), Little Caesar (1931), and Scarface (1932) hit theaters, it’s also probable that Beatty incorporated those influences into Dick Tracy decades later. The two aforementioned Sondheim songs, “Sooner or Later” and “Back in Business,” play over musical montages, each tracing the rise and fall of our hero. In one set of the montages, it’s Tracy breaking up Big Boy’s racket at every turn, cut in-between shots of the increasingly exasperated mob boss and newspaper headlines and radio announcers regaling Tracy’s successes. In “Back in Business,” Tracy’s been framed and locked-up, leaving the gangsters to regain control of the city while he stares hopelessly at the ceiling. But when Elfman’s score swells again, it’s Tracy’s turn to get back to business. In a way, Dick Tracy is a movie of its time and outside of it, a film about a 1930s hero remade with as much leniency towards violence and sex as a 1990s PG-movie would allow. It’s a pastiche of nostalgia boiled down to its bare elements: good and bad, love and lust. It might have been an otherwise forgettable entry in the early days of movies based on comic characters, but Beatty and his team made it a cult favorite. There are few other movies that work as hard to make the real world look hand-drawn, to recreate each minute detail down to its monochromatic costumes, set decor and matte paintings, to recreate Tracy’s world from the page to the screen, and it s all the more unique for it.Where You Can Watch It NowFandangoNOW (rent/own), Vudu (rent/own), Amazon (rent/own), Google (rent/own), iTunes (rent/own)Dick Tracy was released on June 15, 1990.
