神兵传奇2采用百度引擎9(Baidu 5)sly released two short teasers ( Moiraine and Lan ), they didn t show us a trailer, but Amazon s Comic-Con@Home panel did reveal the first poster, that came with the promise of a premiere date sometime in November 2021.FRIDAY 3 P.M. CHECK OUT THE NOT-SO-SPOOKY BLOOPER REEL FROM THE FEAR STREET TRILOGY Netflix by all accounts has found success through their decision to pick up the Fear Street trilogy — which are all Certified Fresh at 84% and up — from 20th Century Studios after that company decided to hold back their original plans for a 2020 release because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The movies are obviously intended to be scary, but the blooper reel fans got to see during the Netflix Geeked: Fear Street Trilogy panel not so much.FRIDAY 3 P.M. BATMAN: THE LONG HALLOWEEN, PART TWO TO FEATURE SOME CHANGES FROM COMIC The problem with adapting any sort of mystery book to movies or TV is that anyone who s read the book then might already know how everything will be revolved in the screen version. That s especially true if the source material came out some 25 years ago as the original Batman: The Long Halloween comics did. The story is pretty massive (stretched across an entire year of various holidays), so the animated adaptation was split into two movies. Part One came out last month, and Part Two, premiering on Tuesday, July 27, was discussed at a panel this week, including the not-surprising revelations that some elements were changed from the comics.FRIDAY 5 P.M. CYBERPUNK CLASSIC LIVES ON AS BLADE RUNNER: BLACK LOTUS HBO Plus neighbors Adult Swim and Crunchyroll are teaming up for a 13-episode Blade Runner spinoff series called Blade Runner: Black Lotus, and the first trailer premiered at its Comic-Con@Home panel this week. Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist, Game of Thrones) voices a replicant named Elle whose goals are, of course, shrouded in mystery.SATURDAY 1 P.M. THE SIMPSONS STILL CHUGGING ALONG INTO SEASON 33The Simpsons has been on the air longer than many of its current fans have even been alive, which we re guessing just on the math that there have be fans who are under 33. Not only is The Simpsons indeed coming back for its 33rd season, but the premiere episode will be a musical that was described in the panel as like a Broadway musical of an episode with wall to wall music, with Kristen Bell (Frozen) providing Marge Simpson s singing voice. This year s Treehouse of Terror episode will also be an expanded one that, based on its length (five stories instead of three) sounds like it might be an hour-long special.SATURDAY 1 P.M. AND 3 P.M. ALL THINGS THE WALKING DEADAMC had so much to reveal about three different Walking Dead panels that they spread it out around two Comic-Con@Home panels. Let s start off with the original show (watch the panel), which will finally come to its conclusion with season 11, which will get its start on AMC+ on August 15, 2021. The first spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead (watch the panel) also is coming back soon for its seventh season, which will premiere on October 17, 2021. Finally, there is also The Walking Dead: World Beyond (watch the panel), which will debut its second and final season on October 3, 2021.SATURDAY 5 P.M. LUCIFER TO COME TO ITS HELLISH END IN SEPTEMBERNetflix is now well into production on its long-in-development adaptation of Neil Gaiman s The Sandman, and at the same time, Netflix is also preparing to wrap up another Gaiman adaptation series, Lucifer. At the show s panel this weekend, Netflix revealed that the sixth and final season will premiere on September 10, 2021.SUNDAY 10 A.M. THIRTEENTH DOCTOR RETURNS FOR DOCTOR WHO SEASON 13Your favorite show may have been a long time (The Simpsons, hold our beer), but pretty much no one beats the nearly 60-year legacy of Doctor Who (watch the panel) — just never mind that gap before the reboot or that the new season is called the thirteenth. That number 13 comes into play twice with this week s teaser trailer, as Jodie Whittaker’s incarnation is the 13th form of The Doctor. Especially watch out for the new supporting character played by Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm from Game of Thrones).SUNDAY 11 A.M. GEORGE A. ROMERO S DAY OF THE DEAD TO LIVE ON AS SYFY SERIESSome 50-plus years after Night of the Living Dead, the zombie genre that George A. Romero reinvented is still very much still undead, and that s even after all three films of his original trilogy have been remade at least once, including Dawn of the Dead in 2004 and Day of the Dead in 2008, both featuring Ving Rhames. SYFY is skipping over the mall-set Dawn of the Dead and jumping straight to the military bunker setting of Day of the Dead with their new series (watch the panel), which is expected to premiere sometime in October before Halloween.SUNDAY NOON DC S LEGENDS OF TOMORROW SEVENTH SEASON TRAILERWarner Bros and DC Comics are now focusing many of their new series projects on the HBO Max streaming service, but most of the shows on The CW continue to chug along. That includes the comedic time traveling adventure DC s Legends of Tomorrow, which is set to return for its seventh season on August 8, 2021. The show s Comic-Con@Home panel revealed several new details about the next season, including the first trailer ( https://collider.com/legends-of-tomorrow-season-6-comic-con-trailer-clue-episode/).SUNDAY 1 P.M. DEXTER TO BE REVIVED AS DEXTER: NEW BLOODThe Showtime drama Dexter, starring Michael C. Hall as the titular serial killer–vigilante, came to its original end in 2013, after earning four Emmy Awards (out of 24 nominations). Hall returns as Dexter Morgan in Dexter: New Blood, which will be set 10 years after his disappearance, with Dexter living quietly in rural New York under a new identity. Dexter: New Blood premieres on Showtime on November 7, 2021.SUNDAY 2 P.M. ARMY OF THE DEAD PREQUEL ARMY OF THIEVES TRAILERA year ago, all of the buzz around director Zack Snyder went towards the demand for his Zack Snyder s Justice League to finally be released, but following the March release of the original director s cut, the focus has since switched to his zombie movie Army of the Dead, and the growing franchise around it. The next entry we will see is a prequel film called Army of Thieves (directed by its star Matthias Schweighöfer), and we got our first trailer during its Comic-Con@Home panel.SUNDAY 4 P.M. CHILD S PLAY SPINOFF CHUCKY SERIESAlthough the original 1988 horror movie Child s Play was produced for just million, it was such a success that the Chucky franchise (watch the panel) went on to have a total of eight feature films (and counting), as well as an upcoming SYFY spinoff series. SYFY and USA Network revealed the first Chucky trailer this week, which included the series premiere date announcement: October 12, 2021.SUNDAY 5 P.M. DELAYED BOB S BURGERS MOVIE STILL COMINGA number of movies finally being released in 2021 were originally scheduled for release in 2020, but were delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Having said that, there are also movies that were originally scheduled for last year that had their release dates delayed, and which have not yet been rescheduled. One such title is the Bob s Burgers movie (based on the FOX animated TV series), which was first announced in 2017 as being scheduled for July 17, 2020. At one of the last panels of Comic-Con@Home, the showrunners confirmed that the movie is still indeed planned for a theatrical release, but that, we re not really in a hurry to be in theaters until it s really come back. Obviously, none of us know for sure when that will be.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

1. 神兵传奇2
(Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)There were a handful of forgettable war-related films released in 1999: The General’s Daughter, All The King’s Men, the Robin Williams-starrer Jakob The Liar. And then there was Three Kings (Certified Fresh at 94%), part action comedy, part heist movie, and 20 years later, still holding up as one of the best and most subversive war films ever made.Directed with adrenalized panache by David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle), Three Kings followed on the heels of Steven Spielberg’s heroic 1998 WWII epic Saving Private Ryan, which canonized the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation. But Russell had no such patriotic flag to wave. Like Catch-22, Three Kings satirically probes the insanities of war; like Apocalypse Now, it revels in surreal set pieces and sharp visual juxtapositions; like M*A*S*H, it mixes black humor with moral complexity. Its heroes are reluctant ones, soldiers who start out consumed by their own self-interest until forced by untenable circumstances to take a moral stand.IT HAS A KILLER VISUAL LOOKInspired by color photos of the war that appeared in newspapers at the time, Russell and his cinematographer, Newton Thomas Siegel, devised a saturated, blown-out look for the Iraqi desert (actually Arizona) in the film. They increased the contrast and graininess and bypassed the bleaching stage of the film process, giving the desert landscape a foreboding, surreal look, which set the visual template for other films about contemporary wars that followed. The Iraqi village was designed by production designer Catherine Hardwicke, who served the same role on films like Tombstone and Tank Girl and would go on to direct the first Twilight and Lords Of Dogtown.IT MAKES ASTUTE POLITICAL POINTS WITHOUT BEING PREACHY(Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Russell exposes the hypocrisy of American foreign policy in the Middle East and indicts the Bush Administration for its abandonment of anti-Saddam insurgents – whom the U.S. had encouraged to rise up against the Iraqi dictator – all without pedantic speeches or heavy-handed scenes. The soldiers who steal back the Kuwaiti gold from Saddam – George Clooney, Ice Cube, Mark Wahlberg, and Being John Malkovich director Spike Jonze – spend the latter part of the film, at great risk to themselves, helping a group of insurgents reach the Iranian border, foreshadowing the refugee crisis of future wars to come.IT HAS THE MOTHER OF ALL INTERROGATION SCENESWhat’s a good war movie without at least one hard-to-watch interrogation scene? Most of these scenes tend to follow a simple formula: someone, usually a soldier, is captured behind enemy lines and tortured for information. But the scene between Moroccan actor Saïd Taghmaoui as an Iraqi army officer and Mark Wahlberg as the captured American soldier gets up close and personal in a way few of these scenes manage to.While the Iraqi does torture Wahlberg s character with electric shocks, he’s no faceless sadist; our sympathies are engaged when we learn he’s lost his young son and daughter to American bombing raids. But the capper comes when Taghmaoui forces oil down Wahlberg’s throat, a searing indictment on what many felt was the real point of America’s intervention in Kuwait: to protect its oil reserves in the Middle East.IT’S THE FIRST WAR FILM TO SHOW GRAPHICALLY WHAT A BULLET CAN DO TO THE HUMAN BODYRussell was concerned about viewers being anesthetized to gun violence; his answer was to give the audience the uniquely visceral experience of how a bullet traumatizes the human body. In the scene, Clooney lectures his men: What makes any gunshot wound bad, provided you survive the bullet, is something called sepsis. Say a bullet tears into you right now. It creates a cavity of dead tissue, the cavity fills up with bile and bacteria, and you’re f ed. As the soldiers listen, the camera tracks a bullet as it smashes into the body, tearing through flesh and filling the organs with bile. While doing press for the film, Russell grew so irritated with a reporter’s questions that he made up a story about how the bullet scene was done using a real corpse. Needless to say, the studio did not find it funny.IT TRANSFORMED GEORGE CLOONEY’S CAREERIn 1999, Clooney was still playing a doctor on NBC’s hit TV show E.R. After the disappointment of 1997 s Batman Robin (11% on the Tomatometer), he was desperate for meatier roles in prestige projects.  In particular, he wanted the role of Three Kings’ disillusioned Special Forces Major Archie Gate (it didn’t hurt that Warner Bros., who produced Three Kings, also produced E.R.), but his relationship with Russell was volatile from the start. The weather on set in Arizona was hot, and the shoot proved to be chaotic. Clooney would often show up on set only to find that Russell had completely rewritten his scenes. As recounted on Slate.com, the two famously came to blows after Clooney objected to Russell physically manhandling an extra on the set.Nevertheless, the film helped to cement Clooney as a leading man, as he jumped to starring roles in The Perfect Storm and O Brother, Where Art Thou? Late in Three Kings, after Jonze is killed and Wahlberg is wounded by a sniper, he even gets an E.R. moment, placing a flutter valve in Wahlberg’s chest to allow air to escape from a punctured lung.Three Kings opened on October 1, 1999.Like this? King of the Crop: Fantastic Beasts Wins Weekend But Signals Trouble Ahead(Photo by Warner Bros)Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald topped the box office this weekend easily, but that s about the only domestic victory the film can claim. It can’t even boast having the best start of the 2018 holiday season so far, falling behind The Grinch’s .5 million last week. By the time the final estimates come out it may not even be a Top 25 November opening. (However, it’s international numbers are more than solid with a worldwide tally of 3 million just this weekend.)The million opening is the lowest in the entire Harry Potter franchise. The previous low: Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them with .4 million. Before that it was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, though that posted the second-highest multiple of the series with a 3.78x.Fantastic Beasts is scheduled to be a five-part series, and critics are bailing on just the second movie. Will audiences? Anything less than 4 million domestic (likely) equals declining territory. And less than 0 million domestic will be a major disappointment for WB. So is it the international haul that truly matters? Like the Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises, American audiences may have grown weary, but as long coffers fill overseas, we will see more of them yet.Rotten Returns: Instant Family Continues Streak of Mark Wahlbombs(Photo by Paramount)Paramount got strong reviews from critics for Mark Wahlberg-starring Instant Family, but the million production from Sean Anders did not have that sweet Daddy’s Home connection with Will Ferrell. Confident that audiences would be looking for a potential feel-good film for the holidays, the studio moved the film up from February into this weekend and was rewarded with just .5 million. Since 1990 there have been a dozen films that have started between .7-.7 million, and only three of them have reached million: The Jackal (1997), Horrible Bosses 2, and Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, which benefited from an awards run. If word-of-mouth cannot build Instant Family this will go down as the seventh straight film that Mark Wahlberg has headlined that has ended up on the losing side of its budget. Steve McQueen’s Widows seemingly is in the same boat as Instant Family with just a .3 million opening and million budget. But as a potential awards player, there is a room for longevity.Top Ten and Beyond: Grinch Eyes Seasonal High, No Box Office Rhapsody For Adult Fare(Photo by © 20th Century Fox)Illumination’s animated adaptation of The Grinch finds itself in a pretty good position, pulling ahead of The Lorax (also from Illumination) with a 10-day gross of 6.5 million. That puts The Grinch at a total end estimate in the 0-0 million range. Meanwhile, another box office song going on: Bohemian Rhapsody, which looks to end in 0 million range. It is over 4 million worldwide to date, making the film a tremendous success for Fox.Non-Grinch, not-Queen movies have less to sing about. With respective budgets of and million, Overlord and The Girl In the Spider s Web are at a mere .7 and .2 million. The new Dragon Tattoo Story is only at million worldwide. Overlord is not much better at million, but it is safe to say we have have seen the last of Lisbeth Salander on the big screen. Disney and theaters are bailing fast on another overpriced failure: The Nutcracker and the Four Realms ( million domestic, 6 million worldwide against a0 million budget), which vanished from over 1,100 theaters in just its third weekend.Julian Schnabel’s At Eternity’s Gate had the best per-theater-average of the weekend, with ,000 in four theaters, though it is not much of a number to crow about. Another awards hopeful, Green Book, played 25 theaters, driving up 2k before it will expand into over 1,000 on Wednesday. For the MST3kers out there, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie opened in 26 theaters to 6k. (Enjoy the new season on Netflix this Wednesday!)

2. 公平游戏环境
In one of our creepiest showdowns yet, we’re pitting two pioneering anthology series against each other: Black Mirror vs. The Twilight Zone. (And yes, we’re looking at all iterations of the Zone.) Which series performs better when it comes to the Tomatometer and Audience Score? Which gave us more iconic moments? (Both delivered big time when it came to iconic porcine moments, right?!). And which had the greatest cultural impact? Join Rotten Tomatoes Contributing Editor Mark Ellis as he travels to another dimension, and into the just-recognizable near future, to see which series takes the creepster crown in the latest edition of Vs.As always, if you don t agree with our choice of winner, let us have it in the comments.神兵传奇2they gave their feature film debut, the Oscar-nominated duo are probably a safe bet.Release Date TBDAmazing Stories(Photo by Apple)Talent: Steven Spielberg is on board to revive his 80s anthology series. Bryan Fuller (American Gods) and Hart Hanson (Bones) were originally on board to run the show, which was ordered for 10 episodes, but both departed in February 2018.What it s about: The sci-fi/horror/supernatural anthology series originally ran on NBC.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Despite the talent involved, the creative departures could mean there s more behind-the-scenes drama — which can lead to on-screen discord — afoot. Plus, the series sounds more like a pulpy guilty pleasure than prestige awards bait. Still, it was the first new original series Apple teased at its big announcement, so there seems to be plenty of faith in the series.Little Voice(Photo by Apple)Talent: Tony-, Grammy-, and Emmy-nominated singer/songwriter/actress Sara Bareilles is writing the music (and could possibly star) in the J.J. Abrams-produced half-hour show, which received a straight-to-series order in June 2018.What it’s about: Based on the singer’s first album, The Hollywood Reporter described the series as “a love letter to the diverse musicality of New York” that “explores the universal journey of finding your authentic voice in your early 20s.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: In addition to Bareilles and Abrams, the series will be run by Bareilles’ Waitress collaborator Jessie Nelson (who will also write and direct the first episode). With Waitress, Bareilles’ six Grammy nominees, and Abrams’ pedigree, this series has all the elements needed for success.Oprah Docuseries(Photo by Apple)Talent: In addition to re-launching her book club for Apple TV+, Oprah Winfrey is producing multiple documentaries for the service. What it s about: The first projects include a documentary on workplace abuse, and a series about mental health.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Anyone who s known by single moniker has the star power to pretty much launch anything they want. Come on, it s Oprah! She won t let us down.Time Bandits(Photo by Stefania D'Alessandro/WireImage)Talent: Taika Waititi is set to co-write and direct the pilot for the project, which will also involve the film s original writer/director, Terry Gilliam. What it s about: While still in the development stages, the potential series is an adaptation of Gilliam’s 1981 fantasy film of the same name, about a young boy who joins a group of renegade time-traveling dwarves.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Well, the original film is Certified Fresh, and at least five of Waititi s most recent projects are CF or Fresh on the Tomatometer too. The odds are definitely in his favor.Untitled Brie Larson CIA Project(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Talent: Oscar winner and Marvel superhero Brie Larson is set to star. What it s about: The new series is a look at a young woman s journey in the CIA told through the prism of her closest relationships, per Variety. The series is based on the experiences of real-life undercover CIA operative Amaryllis Fox and her upcoming memoir Life Undercover: Coming of Age in the CIA.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Since 2010, Larson s been a part of a whopping 11 Certified Fresh films, with an additional three films sitting at Fresh on the Tomatometer and just a few (okay, four) at Rotten. That s a pretty stunning record. Let s just hope the show is more of a Room than a Basmati Blues.Defending Jacob(Photo by Jef Hernandez/Everett Collection)Talent: Captain America himself, Chris Evans, is starring in and executive producing the new series. What it’s about: Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, this limited series follows assistant district attorney Andy Barber, who’s investigating the murder of a 14-year-old boy and discovers his son is a suspect.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: A fellow Hollywood Chris (Pine) had similar success executive producing and starring in the drama I Am the Night, so there’s no reason to think Evans couldn’t do the same.My Glory Was I Had Such Friends(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Talent: Jennifer Garner and J.J. Abrams are staging an Alias reunion when the actress stars in the megaproducer’s latest TV project. She’ll also executive produce. What it’s about: The series is based on the 2017 memoir of the same name by Amy Silverstein, and according to its official description (via The Hollywood Reporter), “the drama showcases the power of friendship and the resilience of the human spirit as it follows an extraordinary group of women who supported Silverstein as she waited for a second life-saving heart transplant.”Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Alias ran for five seasons, and Garner and Abrams are both A-list movie stars (in front of and behind the camera). Chances for success are high.Charlie Day–Rob McElhenney Series, Mythic Quest(Photo by Apple)Talent: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars and creators Charlie Day and Rob McElhenney are writing and executive producing a new half-hour comedy. The series will star McElhenney, F. Murray Abraham, David Hornsby, Danny Pudi, and more. What it’s about: The sitcom follows the diverse group of people who work together in a video game development studio.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Believe it or not, Sunny is one of the longest-running sitcoms of all time. Anyone who can crack the secret to that kind of longevity while still remaining culturally relevant and, most importantly, funny certainly has the potential to do it again.Foundation(Photo by Penguin Random House; Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images)Talent: David S. Goyer (Blade, Christopher Nolan s Batman trilogy) and Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Avatar 2) are developing an adaptation of the iconic novel series from famed sci-fi author Isaac Asimov for Skydance Television, the company behind Netflix s ambitious Altered Carbon. What it s about: The book series inspired plenty of the sci-fi you love, including Star Wars. It follows a mathematician who predicts the collapse of humanity, which is scattered on planets throughout the galaxy and ruled by the Galactic Empire. The first book was published in 1951, followed by sequels in the subsequent years and two more in the 80s, along with two prequels.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: There have been numerous attempts to turn Foundation into a feature film or a TV series before (including by disaster-movie king Roland Emmerich and Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan). Needless to say, the subject matter is daunting and will require a deft approach to capturing the books rich world. It could go very, very wrong. But if done well, it could enjoy Game of Thrones–level success.Untitled Richard Gere Series(Photo by Carlos Alvarez/Getty Images)Talent: Richard Gere is set to star in and executive produce the drama series. What it’s about: Based on the Israeli series Nevelot, the show will follow two elderly Vietnam vets whose lives are changed when a woman they both loved 50 years prior is killed in a car accident.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Though he’s had a storied film career, this is Gere’s first foray into television — so it’ll definitely be worth checking out.Hilde Lysiak Series, Home Before Dark(Photo by Apple)Talent: The Florida Project’s Brooklynn Prince is set to play the lead in the upcoming series, which is executive produced by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu. Jim Sturgess will play her father. What it’s about: Inspired by the real-life story of Hilde Lysiak, a 9-year-old investigative reporter who uncovered a murder in her Pennsylvania hometown and broke the news in a paper she started herself, the 10-episode mystery series “follows a young girl who moves from Brooklyn to the small lakeside town her father left behind. While there, her dogged pursuit of the truth leads her to unearth a cold case that everyone in town, including her own father, tried hard to bury,” per Deadline.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Prince received plenty of great reviews for her film debut, but that’s no guarantee of success in a crowded TV landscape.Damien Chazelle Project(Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images))Talent: La La Land director Damien Chazelle is writing and directing every episode of this straight-to-series drama. What it s about: No details about the series have been released, other than the fact that it s the Oscar winner s second foray into streaming TV (he s also involved in Netflix s musical drama The Eddy).Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Since there isn t any information on what the show is even about, this isn t a call that can be made quite yet. But Chazelle is batting two for two with his films Whiplash and La La Land, and his upcoming Neil Armstrong biopic First Man looks to be an awards contender.Central Park(Photo by Tim P. Whitby/Getty Images/for 21st Century Fox)Talent: Apple has ordered two seasons of the series, from Bob s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard, actor Josh Gad (pictured), and Nora Smith, which will feature voice talent from Gad, Leslie Odom Jr., Titus Burgess, Kristen Bell, Stanley Tucci, Daveed Diggs, and Kathryn Hahn. What it s about: The animated musical comedy follows a family of caretakers who live and work in Central Park and end up saving the park — and basically the world.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Bob s Burgers is Emmy-nominated, so that pedigree plus the voice talent involved means there s certainly the potential for critical acclaim.Swagger(Photo by Cindy Ord/Getty Images for Kevin Durant Charity Foundation)Talent: NBA star Kevin Durant is producing the series along with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Television, and Reggie Rock Blythewood (Shots Fired, Notorious) is writing. What it s about: Based on the early life and career of Durant, Swagger will explore the world of Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball and the lives of the players, their families, and coaches.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: Like a jump ball, it s up in the air. The series is still being developed.CallsTalent: This international series has no major Hollywood players attached, but comes from creator Timothée Hochet. What it’s about: The first international co-production for Apple is an English adaptation of the French short-form series of the same name, which allows “audiences to experience short stories through real-life audio sources and minimal visuals,” per Deadline.Chances it’ll be a Certified Fresh hit: This is a format the U.S. hasn’t really seen before, so there’s plenty of potential for a really innovative, groundbreaking series.Talent: Documentarian Matt Tyrnauer (Valentino: The Last Emperor, pictured) will direct all 10 one-hour episodes of the first season. What it s about: Home offers viewers a never-before-seen look inside the world’s most extraordinary homes and delves into the minds of the people who built them.Chances it ll be a Certified Fresh hit: If Tyrnauer serves up the dishy stories behind those gated palaces, the series is sure to be more than simply gorgeous real estate porn.Like this? 0.20.7 2月喜迎(Photo by Carole Bethuel)There has never been (and there will likely never be) a Cannes Film Festival like the one that just wrapped. Being the first major festival to conduct an in-person fest since the pandemic pause in 2020 meant all eyes were on the red carpet of the French Rivera; the Venice Film Festival had a scaled-down affair in late 2020, but it paled in comparison to what we saw on the Croisette. From the COVID-19 protocol restrictions and those same restrictions being ignored to the record low attendance, everything combined to give us the most stress-free year in recent memory. Those lucky enough to make their way to Cannes found tickets easily available and screenings just half full. Most of the galas – which previously were so packed that even people with tickets were turned away – frequently did not have enough attendees to open the balcony of the Grand Lumiere Theater.Still, despite all the changes, the 74th Cannes Film Festival was as it has always been, filled with exceptional characters, jaw-dropping camera work, astounding debuts, equally astounding disappointments, a little controversy, and best of all, the most impressive and avant-garde films in world cinema.Trying to pull a theme from this year s fest would be a difficult affair, given the varied selection. Still, we could easily discern that the festival programmers crafted a program tailored to an audience that has been trapped at home under economic uncertainty and grappling with the mental and physical wounds of 18 months spent battling COVID-19. This year we had narrative tales that mirrored what we have seen in our home communities: broken people looking for belonging, tales of isolation and regret, stories that articulate the yearning for family, and a longing for love – or, more precisely, lust. Nostalgic needle drops and narcissistic men may be the only things that rivaled the amount of sex we saw on screen the past few days.To put it plainly, this might have been the horniest lineup ever to grace the French festival. Red Rocket, Bergman Island, A Tale of Love and Desire, and Mothering Sunday all centered on sexed-up love stories. At the same time, films like Annette, Benedetta, and Palme d Or winner Titane all featured sex scenes that will have audiences talking through awards season. But sprinkled among these amorous offerings were a handful of entries that will be significant players in the 21- 22 awards season. Who knows? Julia Ducournau made history when she became just the second female director to win the top prize at Cannes; perhaps she could also capture audiences like Bong Joon-ho s Palme d Or and Best Picture winner Parasite did in 2019. We will just have to wait and see. In the meantime, read on for our picks for the six best films we saw at the Cannes Film Festival.

(Photo by Marvel Studios)After so much speculation, actor-endorsed blind alleys, and examinations of the kitchen sets, WandaVision drew to a close the only way it could. And while that may leave some hoping for certain cameos disappointed, the lingering questions will continue to fuel our speculation about the overall Phase 4 story for sometime. WandaVision may have seen its series finale, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues. Let s take a look at the program s contributions to the MCU s ongoing tale.Spoiler Alert: This article reveals details from WandaVision episode 9 “The Series Finale.” Stop here if you have not watched the episode. The Scarlet Witch Was Foretold in The Darkhold — or Was The Darkhold Waiting for a Victim?(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/Marvel Studios)Suggesting the book in Agatha s (Kathryn Hahn) basement was The Darkhold may be our only correct guess during the series, but we ll take it. The book is an immensely powerful tome, as we previously discussed, and a key object for any of Marvel s magic users to obtain. But Agatha added an interesting wrinkle by telling Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) the Scarlet Witch has a whole page devoted to her. It declares she will end the world. The series seems to agree with The Darkhold as Wanda s powers grew exponentially this week and looked quite destructive. Then there s Wanda s style as the Scarlet Witch. While we re sure fans are happy to finally see her with a costume inspired by the late, great Jack Kirby — seriously, we love Kirby s penchant for thrilling headgear — it looks far more like a villain s get-up than that of an Avenger. But, perhaps, that is the point. If Wanda s abilities are as dangerous as The Darkhold suggests, then Wanda still has quite a struggle ahead of her to combat the more impulsive and destructive aspects of her soul. Look at the way she initially strangled the Westview residents when they confronted her. That was instinct. And though Wanda released them and removed the Hex, the final shot of her reading The Darkhold sure feels like a clear indication that she will be Doctor Strange s (Benedict Cumberbatch) opponent in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Or, at least, he ll have to battle the Scarlet Witch even as Wanda fights against her from inside.Maybe we ll even get a recreation of The Patty Duke Show during the film. Now that The Darkhold is an artifact in the MCU, it still leaves us wondering about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and its role in that series. Considering that series firmly established the book corrupts all who read it, will it be the true source of the Scarlet Witch s desire to end all things? Was It Ralph All Along?(Photo by Marvel Studios - episode 105)Though WandaVision s plot, and Wanda s powerset, always seemed like a great opportunity to introduce the Mutants into the MCU — Wanda s ties to the X-Men are almost as strong as her association with the Avengers — the hoped for moment was dispelled once Monica (Teyonah Parris) looked at a Water and Power statement addressed to one Ralph Boehner (Evan Peters) and one of his headshots. The fake Pietro was an actor all along! He was also Agnes s never-seen husband Ralph. Honestly, it s a nice tying of the bow as any other explanation for the guy (short of another reality s Pietro Maximoff) would require a lot of screentime. But, of course, it means no X-Men related revelations occurred in the series as a whole. And in the last month, speculation about certain cameos ran rampant. We participated, of course, and until we saw Wanda s father, Olek (Daniyar), last week we started to wonder if, perhaps, Ian McKellan would appear as Magneto at the last second just for Wanda to ask Papa? as the screen turned to black.Such a scene is still possible in some other project, of course.Unfortunately, much of the cameo game turned out to be a joke on the part of Paul Bettany, who admitted earlier this week that he was referring to himself as The Vision (more on that in moment) and not some truly earth-shattering special appearance.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Which leads to a question: Is WandaVision lesser for not having that shocking cameo? We ve striven to let the show s text guide us in our ponderings — even when it led us away from the Agatha Harkness fan theory. And while we always suggested Wanda s powers could give us the X-Men — and used the Kick-Ass joke as evidence — we re not exactly sad they didn t appear. The one thing we ve definitely held onto was Wanda s grief as the reason for the Westview Anomaly. And though the show ended on a more melancholy note than we expected, we re satisfied with the resolution to the mystery presented in the first three episodes. Those expecting Mephisto may not be so satisfied. But hope for the Devil springs eternal and Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne) shouts in the last moments of the end-credit stinger should fuel the further possibility of his eventual arrival. With The Darkhold, the Dark Dimension, and a Mutliverse of madness in play, he is — like Thanos — inevitable. But he may, ultimately, have nothing to do with the twins continued existence.Vision vs. The Vision: Which Is Which?(Photo by Marvel Studios)As in the comics, the use of the definite article in regard to Vision (Bettany) is inconsistent. To be sure, he is often addressed as The Vision on comic book covers and in stories, but characters just as often drop the as he becomes more than a title — an interchangeability he shares with the Batman, oddly enough. But in the program s final cast list, it credits Bettany as both both Vision and The Vision, using that grammatical option as a way to differentiate the Vis we grew to love over the course of the series and the reanimated corpse of the original synthezoid. And we re here for it because it also speaks to the underlying conflict in their battle: the authenticity of Visions.Indeed, after their thrilling fight, they have an equally thrilling conversation about who is The Vision really is — leading to, we suspect, the proper resurrection of the true Vision. The Vision s mention of having been J.A.R.V.I.S., the AI in Tony Stark s early Iron Man suits, seems to indicate his memories, self-awareness, and autonomy are again intact. But the fact their argument ends with them both truly being Vision and not The Vision (or is that vice versa?) also indicates The Vision will need to continue soul-searching before he can obtain his true colors.Or, perhaps, that piece of the Mind Stone residing in Wanda will someday lead to The Vision becoming whole. In the meantime, we definitely love the elegant wordplay in differentiating Vision from The Vision. It s definitely better than our pitch from last week: New Vision and Vision s Corpse. All that said, we love for both versions of the character to merge some day. Well, presuming Vis didn t download his memories into The Vision already. Will Monica Rambeau Become Director of S.W.O.R.D. or Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.?(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/Marvel Studios - episode 105)While it may have been the briefest resolution in the series, we were glad to see Dr. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) trap S.W.O.R.D. director Hayward (Josh Stamberg) so he could be taken into FBI custody. Although, we admit it would ve been nice to see him get a more just dessert — a la Agatha becoming Agnes again.Nevertheless, it puts Monica in a prime position to become director of S.W.O.R.D. But considering all that she s learned about the organization in the last week, would she want the job? The fact she s still wearing a S.W.O.R.D. shirt is a visual clue that it is indeed possible and, clearly, she could do good work there. But there is another tempting offer on the table.(Photo by Marvel Studios - Captain Marvel)In what has to be our first glimpse of Secret Invasion, a Skrull operative spirits Monica away from the scene of Hayward s crime to tell her an old friend of her mother wants to talk. In space. Now, there are two people who could be Maria Rambeau s old friend: Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Nicholas J. Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). In terms of Marvel Studios production chronology, we ll next see Monica in the Captain Marvel sequel, but we re going to assume Fury has invited Monica to the orbital staging platform glimpsed at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Which, of course, only leads to more questions about Fury. For one thing: How long has that platform been there? Considering he was erased during the Blip, he could not have put this thing together in just a few weeks. That suggests it s been there for a while and, perhaps, what he was working on before he turned to dust in 2019. But the Skrull operative leads to a new possibility — is the outpost even his? Perhaps the Skrulls put it there as part of their decades-long secret invasion.Or, possibly, the platform is a next generation S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier capable of trans-atmospheric travel. Although Fury seemingly washed his hands of the agency at the end of Captain America: The Winter Solider — or left it in Agent Coulson s (Clark Gregg) capable hands if you accept Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as canon — we doubt he d truly let it wither away no matter how disgraced Hydra left it or how many of its secrets Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) exposed. If that is the case, it leaves Monica with an intriguing choice: lead S.W.O.R.D or join S.H.I.E.L.D. Granted, we re presuming a lot about both organizations — like Fury having no stake in S.W.O.R.D. — and Monica s interest in them. One thing is clear though from what we know of her so far: an invitation into space is something she cannot refuse. And while her powers are still mysterious — is she a being of pure light now? — we have no doubt the next time we see her, it will be out among the stars. What s Next? Will Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Provide Answers?(Photo by Marvel Studios)The 20th century television sitcoms Wanda loved and emulated within the Hex took great pains to restore the status quo at the end of any given episode. On Bewtiched, Sam s magic remained hidden and Darren stayed employed. The Bradys always found family unity and their housekeeper, Alice, always found the right quip. But WandaVision eschews that tendency — and, perhaps, Wanda s greatest wish — for such tidy resolutions.Although we now know Agatha s main objective was to steal Wanda s powers because she was undeserving, she is now imprisoned as nosey neighbor Agnes. It is unclear if she will continue to live in Westview with poor Ralph or in some sort of stasis near Wanda s Sokovian cabin. And though it feels like a fitting punishment, is it really Wanda s to dole out? She evaded any accounting for her own transgressions, after all. And while she did apologize to Monica, it feels incomplete without one of the townspeople offering some sort of absolution. Then consider what Westview becomes without the Hex: dilapidated houses and a nearly abandoned downtown. It was on the brink of economic collapse before Wanda got there. And yet, the obvious pain its citizens were in, compounded by Wanda inadvertently forcing them to experience her own, means her cosmetic enhancements came at a terrible cost and further cement her as a villain. Nevertheless, Wanda is also the protagonist and by the grammar of the shows she idolized, she should be able to at least restore Westview to some prosperity as reparation. The fact she cannot is an interesting counter to the world she tried to make for herself. And in removing the Hex, she sacrificed the handful of things which brought her some joy in the weeks since the battle with Thanos.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Of course, trying to weigh that out leads back to the question of authenticity Vision and The Vision confronted. Does the pain she unleashed to create a false reality negate the grief she was in? Whose pain is the pain? That ambiguity, and the haunting foreshadowing of the Scarlet Witch as an extinction-level event, is something we ll have to live with until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness picks up the thread. But as we were always sympathetic to Wanda s grief, we hope the character finds the help she needs and comes back from the brink. In the meantime, we ll congratulate WandaVision for using the grammar of television and the language of sitcoms to present these ideas to us. Also, we ll thank them for eight weeks of wild theories, endless possibility, and one of Marvel Studios most emotionally resonant stories.Read Also: How WandaVision Recreated the Sitcoms of the Scarlet Witch’s Childhood On an Apple device? ttle in the way of unforgettable moments, they re always intriguing enough to keep curiosity burning about what will happen next (or, for those who know the book, how the series will stage or reshape it). — Keith Phipps, TV GuideIs Now the Right Time for Another Apocalyptic TV Series?(Photo by Photo Cr: Robert Falconer/CBS ©2020 CBS Interactive, Inc. Whether the world needed another TV adaptation of The Stand (there was a 1994 version with Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald) is a fair question, particularly when the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage around us. If it was just a reminder of the world around us, the answer might be no. But approached as an intriguing diversion, it works. — Bill Goodykontz, Arizona Republic The apocalypse isn t the point – it s simply the backdrop for what is unabashedly an epic modern fantasy. — Joshua Sargent, San Francisco Chronicle In a year ravaged by a far different virus, The Stand carries a different significance as it closes out a year terrifyingly similar to the story on screen. Told over nine episodes, including an all-new ending written by Stephen King and his son Owen, this new version of The Stand is a very uncomfortable story to watch while the world is mired in a real pandemic but still manages to be a faithful adaptation of King s masterpiece with timely updates that more or less work. — Alex Maidy, Jo Blo s Movie NetworkAny Final Thoughts?(Photo by Robert Falconer/CBS ©2020 CBS Interactive, Inc. Going on nearly 20 years, the X-Men movie franchise has had many ups and downs. Now, with the release of Dark Phoenix, critics are declaring it the lowest of the low, and the Tomatometer score certainly affirms the dishonor. While some reviews claim it’s not really the worst X-Men sequel yet, even the most positive takes are far from excited. If this is the conclusion of what began back in 2000, it’s possibly a more disappointing series finale than anything on TV. Still, there’s reportedly some decent action, if that’s enough for you to finish out its run. Here’s what critics are saying about Dark Phoenix:Is this really the worst X-Men movie? The worst chapter of its long-running main series.  Eric Eisenberg, CinemaBlendIt may very well be the worst X-Men movie ever made.  Jordan Ruimy, World of ReelIt s more focused and less bloated than Apocalypse.  Ian Sandwell, Digital SpyA tiny bit better than the worst X-Men films!  Todd Gilchrist, Birth.Movies.Death.Dark Phoenix IS GOOD!… It’s more distinguishable and bares the identity of an X-Men movie that plays like a long episode of the animated series.  Rendy Jones, Rendy Reviews(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Is it at least better than The Last Stand? The film is marginally better than the previous telling of the Phoenix saga. Jim Vejvoda, IGN[Kinberg] makes up for the single worst X-Men film… Chris Claremont and John Byrne would be proud. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the Movies[Simon Kinberg] is a more sensual and intuitive filmmaker than Brett Ratner. Owen Gleiberman, VarietyWhile Dark Phoenix may have fewer embarrassing missteps than Ratner’s 2006 disaster, it replaces that embarrassment with something that feels devoid of personality.  Kambole Campbell, Little White LiesMaybe X-Men: The Last Stand wasn’t an accurate adaptation of the Dark Phoenix comics, but at least it was a fun celebration of an ensemble of characters.  Fred Topel, We Live EntertainmentWill die-hard X-Men fans enjoy it?Dark Phoenix is not the movie for fans of the comic book series. It’s arguable if Dark Phoenix is the film for hardcore fans of the franchise that’s existed in one form or another since 2000. Jeffrey Lyles, Lyles Movie FilesIt’s as though the audience is expected to be grateful that they are seeing most of the classic line-up of characters, without exploring what makes them interesting. Kambole Campbell, Little White LiesThis final Fox X-Men film also has a number of Easter eggs for comic fans… there’s also a cameo by writer Chris Claremont.  Scott Chitwood, ComingSoon.net(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Is it a satisfying franchise finale, at least?Compared with the conclusions of other major franchises — the most recent being Avengers: Endgame — this one seems distinctly minor league. Todd McCarthy, Hollywood ReporterThis X-Men outing feels more like an afterthought than a climax. Larushka Ivan-Zadeh, MetroWith this final installment, the franchise goes out with a resounding thud. Katie Walsh, Tribune News ServiceDark Phoenix makes for a satisfying conclusion to the X-Men series. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesUltimately a movie that understands its status as a farewell to characters who have thrilled audiences for two decades… It’s a fitting final chapter. Tom Beasley, Flickering MythHow is Sophie Turner? For Game of Thrones fans, it is tempting to imagine Turner as the all-powerful being she deserves to be…Dark Phoenix just doesn’t do [her] justice. Katie Walsh, Tribune News ServiceIf she deserved better than Game of Thrones finally gave her, she deserves even better here. Justin Chang, Los Angeles TimesTurner puts in the work, but the writing and sloppy direction does little to underpin the performance. Radheyan Simonpillai, NOW TorontoThe pleasure of Dark Phoenix is watching her emerge from the wreckage. Owen Gleiberman, Variety(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Is there a strong feminist message? It’s the women in this one who do most of the heavy lifting, and the film rises to another level because of it. Lisa Johnson Mandell, AtHomeInHollywood.comDark Phoenix takes blockbuster gender politics a step further… to forge an allegory of the rise of women that’s sharply compelling in its renegade/victim edge. Owen Gleiberman, VarietyIf Dark Phoenix was intended as a feminist statement, it plays out more like a male fear at women seizing power and wreaking havoc. Larushka Ivan-Zadeh, MetroHow is the rest of the cast? The excellent acting… is better than the Disney-run Marvel Cinematic Universe. Johnny Oleksinski, New York PostJames McAvoy is probably the standout… Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender, meanwhile, are practically checking their watches. Eric Eisenberg, CinemaBlendPerhaps the most affecting work is by Hoult as Hank, who etches a journey from loss to rage as the effects of Jean’s unravelling hit hard. Ian Freer, Empire MagazineDoes it have a villain problem? It’s a character so immensely boring that it doesn’t really deserve mention in the basic plot description of the film. Eric Eisenberg, CinemaBlendChastain is excellent as always, but her character is so underwritten that you’d be hard-pressed to remember its name. David Ehrlich, IndieWireChastain puts on an icy performance as the baddie… but the movie doesn’t seem to know what to do with her. Radheyan Simonpillai, NOW TorontoOne of the film’s biggest missed opportunities is its handling of the villains… with Chastain delivering a flat performance as a one-dimensional super-powered baddie. Jim Vejvoda, IGN(Photo by 20th Century Fox)What about the good parts?Kinberg actually puts together some very well done fight scenes. The film’s signature sequence on a train showcases the X-Men’s powers in a way we haven’t seen on the big screen in a long time. Jeffrey Lyles, Lyles Movie FilesOne diverting action sequence, set aboard a fast-moving train and goosed by an enjoyably bombastic Hans Zimmer score. Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times[It has] what may very well be the best on-screen train fight since Captain America: The First Avenger. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesThere aren’t many action scenes in Dark Phoenix, but the few that there are end up being somewhat entertaining. Scott Chitwood, ComingSoon.netThe light-show effects have a mid-’90s fanciful cheesiness, and I dug them for that reason. Owen Gleiberman, VarietyThere’s a refreshing simplicity to Dark Phoenix at a time when superhero movies are becoming increasingly complex. Tom Beasley, Flickering MythAre we just ready for the X-Men to join the MCU?Now the legacy of the X-Men will pass into a new set of hands, and hopefully it will rise, like a certain mythological bird, again. Don Kaye, Den of GeekAs Disney and Marvel Studios take the reins, I hope they embrace the stakes, humanity and scrappiness of these special characters. Johnny Oleksinski, New York PostWhile the MCU may prove better… the property itself deservedly needs a good long rest before the X-Men return to the screen. 神兵传奇2 om the H in the Hollywood sign in the early 1930s.The limited series, co-created by Ian Brennan, plays out like a dream – what would happen if profit-driven studios had taken the brave step of giving minorities major lead roles during Hollywood s Golden Age? – and comes loaded with many of über-producer Murphy s TV signatures. There s a cast of attractive young newcomers (Broadway star Jeremy Pope, Ready or Not’s Samara Weaving, Spider-Man: Homecoming’s Harrier, and more); a handful of Murphy veterans (The Assassination of Gianni Versace’s Darren Criss, The Politician’s David Corenswet); plenty of visual panache, this time with a 1940s Hollywood flair; and lots to put a smile on any LGBTQ viewer s face — a fictionalized Rock Hudson is among the lead characters, for starters. And as with American Horror Story, Feud, and other Murphy-produced series, Hollywood is marked by a number of veteran actresses in the kind of complex, flashy roles you don t see a lot of outside of Murphyland. Holland Taylor is a wise studio executive; Mira Sorvino plays an aging actress struggling to land a role; and Broadway legend Patti LuPone stars as Avis Amberg, the studio head s wife who has to take over when he suffers a heart attack. It s Avis who makes the call to cast Washington, and who deals with the fallout, and it s LuPone who runs away with the series: Whether she s dressing down a group of bean counters trying to shutter her studio, getting plastered backstage at the Oscars, or getting freaky with 26-year-old Corenswet s Jack – expect memes of the staircase moment to do the rounds – she s a joy to watch.Rotten Tomatoes recently called LuPone at the Connecticut home that s enjoyed some fame during quarantine; the actress has been offering virtual tours of her eclectically decorated basement on Twitter ever since fans began obsessing over it when she appeared on a Rosie O Donnell live stream. It was the day after her birthday when we called, and she was hungover from a night with people on Zoom getting trashed on martinis — not something she usually drinks. Her mouth may have been dry, but LuPone had plenty to say about working with Murphy, what she d change about the entertainment industry today, her Tiger King–themed birthday present, and why those in the arts deserve more respect.Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: Hollywood is just the latest Ryan Murphy production you ve been a part of – fans will remember you from AHS and Pose. What is it about what Ryan’s doing in the television landscape that’s drawing you to his projects?Patti LuPone: He offers me jobs. It s simple is that. And he offers me really great parts. I did a little thing on Glee, that was the first time I worked for him. I got a call from my agent, and they were very excited about it, they said, Ryan Murphy wants to do a whole episode about you, Patti. And I m like, No, I m still a working actor. I cannot be Patti LuPone d out of the business. And they were shocked I said no. Because they didn t know how Ryan would react. I said, Tell them, I would be happy to do one scene, but I can t have an entire episode. And I did this one scene with Lea Michele and Cory Monteith. But then I was offered American Horror Story then Pose and now this. You know what Ryan’s doing? He s forming a repertory company on film. And that s an extraordinary thing — that Ryan will offer you a great part in a great television show, you know what I mean? It s just really wonderful that somebody trusts you enough to go, “Here, play this. Here, play that.” It s always different.(Photo by Saeed Adyana/Netflix)This particular role in Hollywood, Avis, is so meaty. Part of it is just the clothes — which I m still getting over because you get to wear some amazing stuff — but then you also get to have this boy toy and some pretty wild sex scenes with David [Corenswet]. And then she becomes this boss business woman. What was it like to play all these aspects of Avis?LuPone: Well, I had an indication [of the arc] when Ryan talked to me about the part; he told me what would happen, that she would end up running a studio and making movies just for gays, minorities, and women. So I knew that that was going to be the arc of the character. And he did preface it by saying, “…and she has sex scenes.” And I said: Finally. We only got a script at a time, so I didn t really know how exactly it was going to unfold. I was thrilled that he trusted me, and I was thrilled that he gave me meat to act.Ryan has spoken about Hollywood as a sort of rewriting of movie history that gives people a happy ending who didn t necessarily get a happy ending in many ways. It’s a corrective fantasy. Is there something about the entertainment industry or Hollywood today that you would rewrite, as Ryan does in the series? What would you change about the industry if you could?LuPone: First of all, there are no showmen left. Do you know what I mean? There s no Louis B. Mayers, Jack Warners left; there are no Irving Thalbergs left. These people had theater in their blood. And I mean theater encompassing everything, do you know what I mean? They would have theatrical blood where they could choose writers and they could choose materials; materials to give to an audience. What are we doing as far as filmmaking is concerned today? We re regenerating cartoons. So I would hope that artists would lead. And I don t just mean actors, I mean anybody with an artistic bent would lead. My problem is that — and this is on Broadway as well, any entertainment aspect — we are second-guessing the audience. We are underestimating the audience. They can take a whole lot more and they need it. We need to educate, [and] they need to educate us. So, we should put everything out, much broader ideas, and let the audience decide. They are smarter than we think they are, or that we give them credit for. (Not me, because I m on that side of the stage where I deal with them.) But we need to empower the people that green-light films so they aren t underestimating them.Is the problem that those particular decision-makers lack an artistic bent?LuPone: I think that s part of it. The other is financial. I saw it changing when I was doing [ABC drama] Life Goes On years ago. I saw it changing when the Harvard bean counters, the Yale bean counters came out and took over Hollywood and the music industry. I d heard about it and I sort of felt it when I was in California, that was 1989 to 1993. You could feel it changing. Also, there should be more women in every position of power, not just in the entertainment industry, but in our politics. There s just something that the men lack right now and that s empathy.Ryan seems to have that quality.LuPone: Oh, Ryan is a champion.OK, I have to ask you about your time social distancing in Connecticut. Your home, and particularly your basement, has taken the Internet by storm ever since you appeared on Rosie O’Donnell’s live stream, and you’ve showed us your cassettes and jukebox and all sorts of things on Twitter. Are you surprised that people are so fascinated by your home and your basement and your life right now?LuPone: Yes. Yes. Yes. But you know what, if it s bringing anybody joy, I m very happy to do it. It has to be when the inspiration strikes, so that there is a mood to [the Twitter videos]. And today the mood struck because we were planning this one and I had to wait until I was sort of in the right frame of mind. What happened was I got really trashed last night because it s my birthday. I got trashed on martinis, which I don t drink. So I m hungover today and I said to my kid, Let s do it. I m not bathing, I m not combing my hair. I m not brushing my teeth. Let s do it right now. And we did it. People wanted to know what was in the locker, so I showed him things that were in the locker.I heard somebody wanted to see more of my basement. 😘 pic.twitter.com/fBea7emR6h Patti LuPone (@PattiLuPone) March 23, 2020You now know you what I m doing straight after this! What is a Patti LuPone hangover cure, by the way?LuPone: Oh my God, I don t know. I m still hungover. I woke up so sick. Apparently, I was crazy last night. I don t remember anything, but my husband told me. Because it was Bingo, it was Zoom Bingo. And I started yelling at the computer — well not the computer — and then I won and then I peed my pants and then I came upstairs. What the hell was happening? Maybe there s too much information for you, but it was one of those sort of I just passed out. Then I woke up this morning, my throat was so dry, my head was pounding. Who the hell knows? These days it s just kind of like every night could turn into that if you let it. I haven t seen a movie collection necessarily or DVDs or VHSes in your basement. Do you have one and what might we find in it?LuPone: Yes. And you know it s in the corner? It was by Nipper [her statue of the RCA dog]. But we ve just gotten rid of a lot of VHSes as well — actually we haven t gotten rid of the VHSes yet, because we re going to transfer them to digital — but [we have gotten rid of] a lot of the DVDs because they re basically on the computer. We’re leaving our home to our kids, right? That s what parents do. So my husband and I, in this time, are trying to lessen our imprint — not that we re going to die anytime soon, but you know how you collect stuff? We’re in the process of purging a lot of stuff that is not necessary anymore. So a lot of the DVDs went south. I m not going to watch the movies again, or if I want to, they re on Netflix or YouTube. So the physical movies are gone. I mean, I just got rid of a bookcase: 12 boxes of books that I got rid of!Oh no! But that s good. You re doing your part. Is there a film that you ve returned to or a TV show that you ve returned to during this time? Or something new you’ve discovered?LuPone: I m watching Babylon Berlin and My Brilliant Friend and Grace and Frankie, and now I want to watch Unorthodox; oh, somebody told me about Sex Education. But what I m doing is reading, I m reading a lot. I m reading the latest translation of Madame Bovary, which I d never read. Then starting on Hilary Mantel s The Light and the Mirror.I’m reading that at the moment, actually. Did you see the Wolf Hall miniseries?LuPone: I did. And at first, I didn t understand what Mark Rylance was doing [in the role of Thomas Cromwell]. But I think Mark Rylance is one of the great actors. I didn t understand what he was doing, and then Oh, Oh. It deeply revealed itself. I mean, he s extraordinary. (Photo by Saeed Adyana/Netflix)And I know you’ve watched Tiger King…LuPone: Yes, I did. You know what I got for my birthday from my kid? I got an authentic bumper sticker that says “Joe Exotic for President.” But it s one of those authentic ones from 2016.That s amazing. Ryan is reportedly working on series about Joe Exotic with Rob Lowe. Is there a role that you would covet to play?LuPone: Maybe Saff. Saff Saffery. [Laughs] I should play Saff; I m too old to play Saff. Um Yeah. We ll have to find a role for me. I don t know. I can t be Carole Baskin… No, it d be a challenge. On a more serious note, there’s been a lot of talk these last few weeks about how important the arts are — we’ve all turned to TV and film and music and reading to keep ourselves sane. Do you think there might be some sort of landscape change in terms of how government and people just view writers and musicians and filmmakers when this is all over? More respect? More funding?LuPone: Not as long as we have the present government. Not at all  I do not think so if the Republicans hold power; I think we will sink further, further into obscurity if they hold on to power in 2020. And I think we are taken for granted, and we are also treated as third-class citizens in this country. That s been my experience my entire career, in various ways. So I don t think so. But other countries? Probably so, because they re just smarter than we are. And more cultured than we are.(Photo by Saeed Adyana/Netflix)I’m wondering if you can expand a little for someone who s reading this and doesn t understand perhaps what you mean by “third-class citizens.” The perception might be, Patti LuPone or Ryan Murphy, et cetera, all live wonderful lives. Can you unpack that a bit?LuPone: Theatricals have always been treated with phenomenal distrust. The actress on stage, she was considered a prostitute; they were the first people that wore makeup and she was they were sub-society. I remember when I was performing, The Acting Company was performing at the Ford Theater, the reopening of the Ford Theater during Jimmy Carter s administration. And the Carters were coming to the performance that night, and we were invited to the White House to meet the President. Basically, it was the clearing out of the social calendar and there were some celebrities there: Alexis Smith, Henry Fonda, John Houseman. And just as they got to Henry Fonda and John Houseman, the military guards stopped the receiving line. I actually said, No, no, you can t do that. They re coming to see us tonight. And we were escorted off the property, basically. We ve always been considered do I want to say “non-essential”? Even though it is.I have said forever, it s an inherent right: The arts are an inherent right in human nature. And they keep de-funding the National Endowment for the Arts. I mean people were bitching that they gave the Kennedy Center million in the first stimulus package. The arts are crucial for mental and spiritual health. Yet we are, like I said, taken for granted. Or put in situations where we are totally dismissed. I have felt it my entire career. And, yes, I make a living. [But] I don t always make a living. There s that expression, You re only as good as your last shift, and I m going to be in financial peril if this goes on too much longer. I m no different than anybody else. Finally, we know that one of your theatrical pet peeves is when people put their phones on in the theater — you famously grabbed a phone from an audience member during a performance of Gypsy on Broadway. Do you have any pet peeves when you re going to the cinema? Things that really bother you?LuPone: The same thing. People talking during the movie or people texting during the movie. It s the exact same thing, you are together in a proscenium environment. And it s public manners. We, in this country, have forgotten our public manners — that other people exist besides ourselves. So, it s how we conduct ourselves in theaters, all kinds of theaters. Movie theaters, legitimate theaters. It s the same piece.Hollywood is available to stream on Netflix from Friday, May 1, 2020.

神兵传奇2 2. LADY BIRD DIRECTOR GRETA GERWIG TAPPED FOR BARBIE MOVIE(Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)The toy company Mattel has been attempting to get a live action Barbie movie going for a few years now, including an effort at Sony that almost featured first Amy Schumer, and then Anne Hathaway. The Barbie movie eventually moved to Warner Bros. late last year, at which point their Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie also started talks to star in the film. At first, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins had also been in talks to helm Barbie, but this week, Warner Bros. instead hired Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Certified Fresh at 99%), who will also adapt the screenplay with Lady Bird co-writer Noah Baumbach. The premise isn t known yet, but it s expected that it will no longer be anything like the story it would have been with Schumer or Hathaway. Warner Bros. had previously scheduled Barbie for May 8, 2020, but this news may mean it will be delayed.3. EMMA STONE AND BRAD PITT MAY CO-STAR IN DAMIEN CHAZELLE S BABYLON(Photo by Jef Hernandez, Gregorio Binuya/Everett Collection)We re now less than two weeks from the release of Quentin Tarantino s ninth film as director, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is his tribute to the Los Angeles of the 1960s. Tarantino is not the only director revisiting the Hollywood of the past, though, as La La Land director Damien Chazelle is preparing for his next film, Babylon, which will be set in the silent era of the 1920s. Emma Stone is now in talks to reunite with Chazelle on Babylon, which might start filming before her starring role in Disney s 101 Dalmatians prequel Cruella (12/23/2020). In a move that would really tie Babylon to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt is also reportedly circling the film. Babylon will reportedly be an R-rated movie in the three hour range with a budget of between million and 0 million, with Lionsgate and Paramount among the studios vying to distribute.4. POP SINGER HARRY STYLES MAY JOIN DISNEY S THE LITTLE MERMAID AS PRINCE ERIC (Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)In just a few weeks, we ve gone from not knowing when Walt Disney Pictures might ever remake The Little Mermaid to having almost every major role cast (pretty much everyone but King Triton and Sebastian the singing crab). All in the same week, actually, Disney started negotiating with Melissa McCarthy (as the octopus sea witch Ursula), Awkwafina (as Scuttle the seagull), Room star Jacob Tremblay (as Flounder the fish), and Halle Bailey as the title character of Ariel. We can also now report that Disney is in early talks with One Direction pop singer Harry Styles to star as the film s romantic male lead, Prince Eric. The live action remake of The Little Mermaid will be directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Mary Poppins Returns).5. BAZ LUHRMANN FINDS HIS ELVIS(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)Following the staggering success of Bohemian Rhapsody and the pretty good numbers for Elton John s Rocketman, the musical biopic has come back in a big way. There are several similar projects now in the works, including biopics for Boy George and Aretha Franklin (with Jennifer Hudson attached), and a Mamma Mia! style jukebox musical featuring the music of Prince. Right up there with The Beatles, one of the biggest stars never to receive a big budget Hollywood biopic is the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, but that s exactly what Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann is getting ready to work on next. In the same week as the Little Mermaid casting news earlier this month, we also learned about the various contenders to play Elvis (including Ansel Elgort, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Miles Teller, and One Direction s Harry Styles, who will apparently co-star in The Little Mermaid instead.) Baz Luhrmann s Elvis will be Austin Butler of MTV s The Shannara Chronicles, with Tom Hanks already attached to co-star as Colonel Tom Parker.6. GIRLS TRIP DIRECTOR TAKING OVER SPACE JAM 2(Photo by Michael Gibson/©Universal Pictures)Until this week, Space Jam 2 was to have marked the big budget studio debut of director Terence Nance, whose first film was the 2013 independent drama An Oversimplification of Her Beauty. Citing differing visions, Warner Bros. and producer and star LeBron James have now hired director Malcolm D. Lee to direct Space Jam 2. Although his most recent film, Night School, received a Rotten Tomatometer score at 27%, Lee s two prior films both received Certified Fresh scores: Barbershop: The Next Cut at 90% and Girls Trip at 91%. We don t yet know which NBA stars will be joining LeBron yet, but Don Cheadle signed on last week. Warner Bros. has scheduled Space Jam 2 for July 16, 2021, which is the week after Indiana Jones 5, and the week before Mission: Impossible 7.7. FIRST TEASER TRAILER REVEALS WHAT THE HUNT IS ABOUT (SPOILER: IT S ABOUT A HUNT) (Photo by Universal Pictures)There was once a time when people often didn t know that a movie even existed, much less what the film was about, before the first trailer came out. These days, however, mainstream cinema is dominated by sequels, remakes, and adaptations of comics and video games, the news of which break months or years ahead of time (for example: this column). In that climate, then, it s rather refreshing when we have a movie like The Hunt (9/27/2019), which was just described as a political thriller until the teaser trailer was released this week. As it turns out, the title was quite literal, as the movie now appears to be nearly a remake of the classic story and film, The Most Dangerous Game, as twelve strangers find themselves being hunted by the uber-wealthy on a private estate.Rotten Idea2. ARCADE CLASSIC SPACE INVADERS GETTING AN ADAPTATION(Photo by Producers Distribution Agency/Courtesy Everett Collection)This year s Pokémon Detective Pikachu made Tomatometer history with the first Fresh rating (at 67%) ever for a mainstream video game movie. While it s great that this long-standing Rotten record was broken, it s only a mere step in the right direction for the genre;  video game movies still trend towards Rotten, even though we continue to hope that will change someday. One of the oldest video game franchises is Space Invaders, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year in 2018, Warner Bros. has been developing a Space Invaders movie for several years now. This week, the Space Invaders movie moved forward with the hiring of screenwriter Greg Russo, who is also working on another video game movie, the Mortal Kombat reboot (3/5/2021). Good luck, Greg!1. STRANGER THINGS BILLY REVEALS POWER RANGERS TO BE REBOOTED YET AGAIN (Photo by © Lionsgate)Ostensibly, one of the reasons a movie might cast several young up-and-comers is that if there are ever sequels, the franchise might benefit from getting in early on the careers of promising young stars. For example, just two years after the 2017 Power Rangers reboot, its cast seems to be in a pretty great place, as the Pink Ranger was played by Naomi Scott (Jasmine from Aladdin), and the Red Ranger was played by Dacre Montgomery (Billy from Stranger Things). (And that s without mentioning Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, or Barry star Bill Hader as the voice of Alpha 5.) So, it was a crazy headscratcher this week when Dacre Montgomery revealed that Power Rangers is being rebooted once again, with another completely new cast. Although it is true that the 2017 reboot received a Rotten score at 50%, that was actually a step up from the older films, like the first movie in 1995, which was Rotten at 37%.Like this?
