The 70s-junkie pop-culture aficionado released his ninth studio film earlier this year, and following the lackluster response to his last effort, The Hateful Eight, the Los Angeles native is back and enjoying his best reviews in years. With Steven Soderbergh, James Mangold, and Martin Scorsese likely populating the category, star power could be the thing that differentiates each film in this highly competitive field. Soderbergh has Queen Meryl Streep, Mangold will have Damon and Bale, and the trifecta of Pesci, Pacino, and De Niro are with Scorsese for The Irishman; but as impressive as all of those are, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood boasts LEO AND BRAD! They gave two of the most universally acclaimed performances of the year – even if the movie they were featured in has divided some critics. Adding in Tarantino s signature style, there doesn t appear to be anything standing between the Pulp Fiction director and his third Best Director nomination.James Mangold, Ford v Ferrari (2019) 92%James Mangold managed to pull off a shock on Oscar nominations morning in 2018 when he, along with American Gods writer Micheal Green and Scott Frank, garnered an Oscar nomination for Logan. The Wolverine saga s climax still remains the only comic book superhero film to earn the honor, and though Mangold has previously directed Reese Witherspoon and Angelina Jolie to Oscar wins, Logan marks his sole nomination. Ford v. Ferrari looks to change all that, telling the true-life tale of how the Ford Motor Company worked tirelessly to build a car that could beat racing powerhouse Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1966, with Matt Damon as famed Ford car designer Carroll Shelby and Christian Bale as racing legend Ken Miles. If Mangold can spin a perfect mix of car-racing adrenaline and sports movie passion, he may just catch the eye of Academy voters.Greta Gerwig, Little Women (2019) 95%Little Women released its first trailer earlier this week and set social media on fire. Watching the internet s boyfriend Timothée Chalamet profess his love for indie princess Saoirse Ronan on a wind-swept hill looks set to be more than enough to guarantee the period drama will be a hit with audiences. Moreover, the fact that Greta Gerwig is adapting a previously Oscar-nominated novel also could work in her favor for Oscar accolades. Some considered her choice to adapt Louisa May Alcott s Little Women for the eighth time a slightly uninspired way to follow up Lady Bird, but when Gerwig can command a cast that includes Chalamet, Ronan, Chris Cooper, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, and Meryl Streep, you can t fault her for wanting to put her own spin on the story of the March ladies. With nearly 35 Oscar nominations between the cast and crew, Little Women is a juggernaut of talent that cannot be denied. Adding in the fact that the director branch s most influential member, Steven Spielberg, is a fan of Gerwig, and that she is likely the only female director in contention well, odds are she ll make the cut.Martin Scorsese, The Irishman (2019) 95%Thankfully The Departed gave Martin Scorsese his first directing win after 25 years and five nominations, so the pressure is off slightly, but the 76-year-old director is still hungry for more. Boasting a stacked cast and the use of new technology, Scorsese s The Irishman is set to be a major player come Oscar time. During last year s ceremony, as Netflix was racking up multiple wins from its 15 nominations, the studio opted to play a teaser for The Irishman. It was a mic drop moment to be sure, and while the trailer showed no footage or even an official image, the names plastered on the screen were enough: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, Martin Scorsese. Using technology unlike what we’ve seen in the MCU, or will see in Ang Lee’s The Gemini Man starring Will Smith, The Irishman has positioned itself for multiple, possible double-digit nominations in technical and above-the-line categories, including potential nominations for its three leads. Add in the script, which has been said to be incredible, and the fact that this is Scorsese s return to his mob roots, and it s hard to see him not getting a nod. Over the first three days of this weekend the numbers were pretty close, with Aladdin on top .4 million to .4 million and then pulling ahead further on Monday with an estimated 2.7 million vs. 3 million. That number is good enough for the fifth-highest Memorial Day weekend ever, though no film has cracked 0 million it would take to enter the top three since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008. Which is actually a bit shocking given the frequency at which records seem to be broken these days.So just how good are these Aladdin numbers? As big as some of the past Memorial Day opening numbers have been, very few of the films behind them have actually played the long game. Of the seven previous films to score 0-plus million over the holiday (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Crystal Skull, X-Men: The Last Stand and Days of Future Past, Fast Furious 6, The Hangover Part II) only Crystal Skull dropped less than 60% the following week. Aladdin is already likely to drop back behind Godzilla: King of the Monsters and, if Rocketman can grab to million, it may even find itself back to third. Indiana Jones and the Caribbean Pirates are the only Memorial Day releases in the modern era to gross over 0 million total. (The original Star Wars opened on the Wednesday prior to Memorial Day 1977 and did it too.) On top of that, only The Hangover Part II and Return of the Jedi made it past 0 million after opening this weekend. Aladdin and Disney can celebrate this weekend, but with a 3 million production budget, this is a win that will be decided again with the international box office. It’s worldwide total stands at 3.7 million. Dumbo is still only at 8 million.Rotten Returns: While Booksmart Lands Toward Bottom of the Class, Word-Of-Mouth Could Help Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart has nothing published about its budget, though one can assume it was on the small side. (How much more could it have cost than Brightburn’s million?) And yet it s still surprising many the the movie only managed to make .69 million over the weekend. Some are saying United Artists Releasing (a.k.a. AnnapurnaOrionMGM) had a tough job of selling it to audiences. The same team gave Laika Animation their worst tally to date with Missing Link (88% on the Tomatometer), which earned less than million total. Now Booksmart, the best-reviewed narrative feature of 2019 (Certified Fresh at 98%) makes a mere .69 million over its first four days. The female-oriented teen comedy, which made a splash at South By Southwest in March, is now unlikely to outgross the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels redux, The Hustle, which has made nearly million to date and ranks in the bottom 10 films of the year, according to critics, with a 15% Tomatometer rating. Though it is not like Booksmart is leaving theaters right now. Audiences still have the opportunity to see it and get the word out. And as this is a word-of-mouth film, there is still a chance it could take off.The rest of the Top 10 and Beyond: Wick Climbs Lionsgate All-Time Chart as Avengers Heads for the TopLionsgate also received some criticism for failing Long Shot (which dropped 752 theaters this weekend but still hung on just enough for one last week in the Top 10, for a total of million). But the studio is enjoying great numbers for John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum, which came in second this weekend. Another million over the holiday puts the film on par with Night at the Museum: Battle for the Smithsonian, which finished its run in 2009 with more than 7 million. Wick is going to become the sixth highest-grossing domestic film in Lionsgate’s history (behind four Hunger Games and a Twilight). Third place for the weekend went to Avengers: Endgame, which is now the second film to ever cross the 0 million line domestically (it is currently million off the pace of The Force Awakens at the U.S. box office). Does that make it harder than just playing three different characters?James Wolk: In some ways, it is more challenging because you can t just go and create three different characters. You have to really think about, in a nuanced way, how someone s life can change in 10 years. So it s basically creating the same backstory from birth until 21. And then everyone takes a divergent road.Obviously, costumes and makeup play a part in this. But does that also affect your posture, your cadence, etc.?Yeah, absolutely. All three versions of this guy are so different, right? You have the rock star, who is super confident versus the nurse, who s down on his luck. I think that s a posture thing, for sure — just the way we hold ourselves when we re feeling really confident versus when we re feeling down on our luck. And then the cop, who s to me is kind of like a big kid. So he s just kind of like a big Labrador. Wardrobe help big time. There s wigs. there s a beard expert that came in and hand-laid that beard for each for each time I was rock star (Photo by NBC Entertainment)The musician character, naturally, performs a lot and the police officer sings in the pilot. You can sing. But do you play the guitar and the piano?I sing, but I sing to my kids: my four-year-old and my two-year-old. So what you hear is my voice. I do play guitar. But they did bring in a guitar aficionado to really play it. That is me singing. That is me playing guitar. And when you hear it in the mix, you re hearing the guitars, but you re getting my voice because my guitar skills are like that of a camp counselor. I can play, like, Cats in the Cradle and a couple of songs around the fire. I don t have rock-star technique.And there was a great vocal coach in Chicago. I haven t sung seriously since high school when I used to do high school musicals. And they brought in this guy and he was amazing. He added two notes to the top of my register that I never thought I could hit.In all versions of this, Joe is successful. He s a really good nurse. He s an extremely successful musician. He s a really good cop. Was that interesting? Were there conversations about having a Joe who wasn t doing well in his career?It s interesting. Nurse Joe is down on his luck, but it s with his marriage. They all have their thing [that s not going well] like, in their show, his marriage isn t going well. Music Joe: he s always wanted to be a dad. It appears in the pilot that his dad passed away on 9/11 and there s a whole backstory that will come out as the series goes on. I think, he has always wanted to replicate that father-son relationship. For him, he and his wife deal with infertility. With Cop Joe, he never moved on with his life. He froze in time; he has Peter Pan syndrome. So they all have something that s eating at all of them.You keep calling them Music Joe or Cop Joe. You did the short-lived series Lone Star. And even your character on Mad Men, Bob Benson (pictured), had a sort of double life because he was a gay man living in the closet. Is there something that draws you to these characters?Subconsciously, I m attracted to that duality. I think that I m someone who went on this path to become an actor. But prior to this, I had so many different interests. I was attracted to that script because I felt like I had a lot of ways I wanted to go at 21 — like vastly different ways. Like grad school. Or did I want to pursue acting? Or did I want to stay in my hometown of Michigan? Or did I want to go to New York?Each one of those choices would have led me to completely different paths. I m married with two kids now. And I m in love with my wife, and I have these two amazing kids. Had I made a different choice, the probability is that I would have a totally different family. So that concept is really interesting to me.And then along those lines, Lone Star and Bob Benson: just the idea of the faces we show versus who we really are inside? A Chinese American college dropout from San Francisco, Nicky ditches the life her parents had planned for her and ends up practicing martial arts in a Shaolin monastery – until tragedy strikes and she ends up back home just when her family might need her the most.(Photo by Kailey Schwerman/The CW)In the series, which premieres April 7 and is created by Lost and Hawaii: Five-0 vet Christina M. Kim, Nicky is seen protecting herself and those closest to her with jabs, strikes, spins and kicks while barely breaking a sweat (and sometimes to the surprise of her siblings; Shannon Dang’s tech-wiz Althea and Jon Prasida’s medical student Ryan).“It definitely conflates my own sense of self confidence,” Liang admitted during a recent phone interview with Rotten Tomatoes.“Especially with the things that are happening in the world right now with Asian hate crimes and violence, I find myself walking on the street and being, like, OK what fight choreography did I learn that I can translate if need be at the drop of a hat right now?” she said.Fight training is a relatively new skill set for Liang. Although she has a background in dance, martial arts was a completely new art form for her when she was cast as Nicky. Training began when she was still busy at her previous job on The CW’s Legacies. That Atlanta-set show’s stunt coordinator, David Morizot, showed her basic moves between takes before she worked with stunt coordinator Sam Ly to prep for the Kung Fu pilot. Then it was an aggressive three-to five-hours-a-day schedule for two weeks where  “they molded me and they whipped me into shape,” she said.(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Although she’s not allowed to do any of the intense wire work lest she get injured and cause a delay in production, she said, “you can maybe expect to see at least 65% me” on screen during the fight scenes and that “I try to do as much as possible because it s also just really fun and really empowering and I feel really cool when I do it.” But she gives credit to her stunt double, Megan Hui, and others in that department “if I ever look cool and badass and powerful during a fight scene.”The show also both fits in with the other programs on The CW and stands out from them. It’s one of the few options on that channel that concentrates on a woman and is the only one with a predominately AAPI cast. And, although Kung Fu is about a woman crimefighter and counts Arrowverse kingpin Greg Berlanti as one of its executive producers, Liang’s lead doesn’t come with either superhero powers (like The Flash or Supergirl) or – depending on the season of Batwoman family connections or the luck of finding the high-tech suit of a lost vigilante.“I think it s pretty cool that Nicky’s just a regular person who has a skill set and wants to use it for good,” Liang said. “She s not a superhero and she s not necessarily wanting to be a hero, but she is very heroic.”(Photo by Kailey Schwerman/The CW)Kung Fu also has the hefty task of demystifying the world of martial arts, an art form that Americans may find alluring and stereotypical when we see it portrayed by people of Asian descent (like in Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and in Bruce Lee’s films) or as agro when portrayed by white men (like in TV series like Cobra Kai, Arrow, or even the original Kung Fu).“The great thing about our show is the diversity all around that s happening,” Liang said, mentioning the Kim-led diverse writers room in particular and that she and other cast members have been reading Charles Yu’s National Book Award-winning Interior Chinatown, which discusses both immigrant Asian stories and TV’s depiction of them.“I think, because we’ve so long been on the receiving end of this voyeuristic [depiction] of ‘the Orient’ and the mysticism of Asian-ness or otherness, we really know how it feels .. to be under that lens. In the first episode, Nicky is angry that her mother’s (Tan Kheng Hua s Mei-Li) big dream for her was that her daughter attend Harvard. This could be perceived as trumpeting a tired trope, but wouldn’t most parents want their kids to get good grades and go to a respected university?“The interesting thing about stereotypes, from my perspective, is that sometimes they are true,” Liang said, adding that she had “kind of a Tiger Mom growing up [who] did want me to be a genius” and that “I took Abacus lessons for some reason.”“I think the problem with stereotypes is if that s the only thing we know about that person and that s the only thing that they re defined by,” Liang said, explaining that Mei-Li may come across as a Tiger Mom in the first episode, “but we also get to see her backstory and get to see her care for her kids and where she s coming from.”With Nicky, Liang said, “She was the kid who was pressured to go to Harvard and to be everything that her parents wanted her be [but] we also get to see her break out of that. We get to see her forge her own path, fall in love, fight with her siblings. What a year 2020 has been! After the severity of the COVID-19 coronavirus became evident, countries around the world effectively went into lockdown some more strictly than others and most of us quickly had to adjust to the so-called new normal. As we sat at home, trying to self-soothe by any means available, a handful of heroes and in some cases, anti-heroes emerged, helping us to take our minds off of things, bringing us some much-needed positive vibes, and giving us a taste of the entertainment we were asked to live without. Of course, we aren t out of the woods just yet, but after more than half a year spent under stay-at-home orders, here are the 12 (online) conversation-starters, powerful performances, and iconic pop culture moments that ruled Quarantine.Joe Exotic and Tiger King(Photo by Netflix)If there was any doubt that the idea of water cooler conversation would still exist in an era of widespread lockdowns, Tiger King removed it almost immediately. Premiering on Netflix on March 20, just as swaths of the U.S. received stay-at-home orders, the docuseries about a larger-than-life animal caretaker and his personal holy war against an industry competitor became the first must-see binge of the quarantine. At the center of it all was Joe Exotic, the proprietor of the G.W. Zoo in Oklahoma, and Carole Baskin, the CEO of Florida s Big Cat Rescue and a self-purported animal rights activist who took issue with Exotic s business practices. But as with any compelling real-life story, Tiger King was full of unbelievable twists and turns, ranging from Exotic s bizarre love life to his run for President of the United States and not one but two murder conspiracies. While much of the country struggled to adapt to the new normal, Tiger King helped take our minds off the crisis with a bit of deliciously scandalous entertainment.John Krasinski and Some Good News(Photo by Some Good News)Just as the severity of the pandemic began to dawn on everyone and stay-at-home orders were being issued everywhere, a likable actor-director used his considerable influence to spread some positive vibes. On March 29, when most people were just beginning to settle into their quarantine routines, The Office and Jack Ryan star John Krasinski surprised everyone with the first installment of a newscast/talk show he decided to call Some Good News on YouTube. Running for just eight episodes, SGN featured Krasinski sharing the most uplifting, inspirational, feelgood stories from around the world, talking to celebrities, and usually doing something a little special for lucky fans. This included a Zoom reunion of the Hamilton cast, a virtual prom with performances from Billie Eilish, the Jonas brothers, and Chance the Rapper, and a high school graduation celebration with keynote speakers like Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Jon Stewart. Now, Krasinski did catch some flak for eventually selling the show to CBS, but it took a lot of work to put the show on, and it s understandable that he would want to go back to making kickass movies and TV shows. In the meantime, the eight episodes of SGN that we did get helped us all to remember how much good is still in the world, even if everything is a little off balance right now, and for that much-needed dose of optimism, we salute Mr. Krasinski.Everyone in Schitt s Creek(Photo by Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images)For a long time, Schitt s Creek was that underground comedy you recommended to everyone as the best show ever if you were a fan. Most of the time, the people you recommended it to would come back to you and say, It totally is! The series, originally broadcast on Canada s CBC and the cable channel Pop TV, gained even more exposure when its first three seasons were made available to stream on Netflix, and by the time it began airing its sixth and final season earlier this year, it was a bona fide cult sensation. As it happened, the show s series finale premiered smack dab in the middle of quarantine, on April 7, and despite its fervent fanbase, it seemed destined to go down as one of the all-time underappreciated sitcoms. Then came the Emmys in September. As if to say, Yes, Schitt s Creek fans, you were always right!, the series made history by sweeping all seven of the comedy categories, including the four for acting Lead Actor for Eugene Levy, Lead Actress for Catherine O Hara, Supporting Actor for Dan Levy, and Supporting Actress for Annie Murphy. If you ve never watched the show, all six seasons are now on Netflix, so get cracking. You ve probably got the time.Michael Jordan and The Last Dance(Photo by ©ESPN/Netflix)One of the things many of us missed the most, at least in the early days of the lockdown, was live sports. After all of the major leagues shut down operations, folks even resorted to watching reruns of old broadcasts or, after the country had cleared some hurdles, baseball in Japan. In the midst of all this, ESPN saw an opportunity to give fans an addictive dose of sports nostalgia in the form of The Last Dance, an extensive look at the career of Michael Jordan and specifically the 1997-1998 season of the NBA s Chicago Bulls, which would go on to win their second three-peat of championships in eight years. Originally planned for release in June, the 10-part docuseries was fast-tracked to premiere almost two months earlier on April 19, and it became an instant hit, thanks to its compelling narrative, never-before-seen footage, and surprisingly candid new interviews with Jordan himself. It brought millions of fans  and meme-makers  together in a shared piece of sports history and gave us a bit of real-life drama and pulse-pounding action to look forward to every week.Jonathan MajorsRyan FujitaniJonathan Majors breakout role came in 2019 s indie darling The Last Black Man in San Francisco, a small, powerful drama that went criminally underseen. Luckily for Majors, he had a few more things on his docket that were set to premiere this year he just didn t know at the time that they would be released in the middle of a pandemic. The first was Spike Lee s Da 5 Bloods, a harrowing adventure-drama in which Majors played the pivotal role of David, the son of Delroy Lindo s central character Paul. Majors held his own against Lindo and a cast of heavyweights that included Clarke Peters and Isiah Whitlock Jr., and the film remains high on the list of Oscar hopefuls. Then, in August, the highly anticipated HBO series Lovecraft Country premiered, placing Majors at the center of an inventive horror series with a sociopolitical edge or is it the other way around and earning the up-and-coming actor all kinds of praise from critics. To top off the summer, he also landed himself a gig in the MCU, signing on to play the villain in the next Ant-Man and the Wasp movie.Lin-Manuel Miranda and HamiltonLin-Manuel Miranda s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning hip-hop musical about the life of one of America s founding fathers has been the must-see Broadway hit for several years now, and scoring a ticket to the show has become something of a status marker. Even if you lived in New York or one of the cities on its tour schedule, there was only a slim chance you d be able to see the show, either because tickets were scarce or because they were maddeningly expensive. Then Disney decided to share the magic of Hamilton with the world, planning a theatrical release of a filmed version of the musical in 2021. Of course, the pandemic changed all of that, and much to the joy of everyone confined to their sofas, Disney chose to move the release up more than a year and plop Hamilton directly on Disney+ for no extra charge. Finally, those of us who had only heard our more fortunate friends gloat about seeing the production were able to watch Hamilton for ourselves and see if it lived up to the hype. Disney+ saw a massive increase in downloads the weekend it was released, and fans of live theater got a little taste of it at home a win-win all around.Beyoncé and Black Is King(Photo by Disney+)Look, Beyoncé is Beyoncé, and it s virtually guaranteed that anything she does is going to be interesting, to say the least. Of course, it helps when the thing she does happens to be incredible, and that s exactly what she gave us in Black Is King. Like 2016 s Lemonade, Black Is King is a musical film, a series of stunning visuals and choreography set to the music of an accompanying album in this case, the album was The Lion King: The Gift, a compilation featuring several artists produced and curated by Beyoncé as a companion to the Disney film. Critics and audiences alike swooned over Black Is King, struck by the imagery and the music, and dubbed it yet another masterpiece from Queen Bey. Not only did she provide a big-budget surrogate concert experience for fans to enjoy in their living rooms, she also managed to convey a vivid message of Black empowerment during a time when the world needed it the most.Zendaya(Photo by HBO)Quarantine provided the perfect time for people to catch up on shows they had heard about from their friends, or had been putting off watching until they had more time, and with the Fall TV season fast approaching, one of those shows was HBO s Euphoria. The series stars Zendaya as a high school student who struggles with mental illness and drug addiction, and it earned both glowing reviews from critics and widespread audience approval. Zendaya wasn t kicking back during lockdown: In June, she actually shot a film – in compliance with strict COVID-19 safety protocols – for two weeks, written and directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levison and co-starring John David Washington. Malcom Marie was the first post-pandemic film to complete production and by all accounts it s very good. (At least, good enough to Netflix to fork out million for it.) Then, in September, during a unique presentation of this year s Emmy awards, Zendaya made history when she became the youngest person ever to win the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series, proving that she s versatile enough to deliver powerful performances in stark dramas and have fun in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.Drive-In Theaters(Photo by Bloomberg/Getty Images)Put your hand up if you went to the drive-in theater for the first time in, like, forever this year? You weren’t alone. From mid-March, America’s 305 drive-in theaters saw business tick up in some cases by 90-plus percent as movie lovers sought out big screen thrills while socially distancing in the safety of their cars. The drive-in became such a 2020 phenom that pop-up drive-ins began to emerge, many in stadiums and carparks; several distributors held ritzy movie premieres in drive-ins, too, including for Antebellum. While the ’50s faves mainly played golden oldies, some new flicks benefited from their newfound popularity, in particular indie horror breakouts like Relic and The Wretched, which topped the box office a record five weeks in a row off the back of drive-in buzz, a record it shares with Black Panther and Titanic.Sitcom and Movie Reunions(Photo by Community YouTube)If you never heard of Zoom before, say, March of this year, you definitely heard the remote meeting software mentioned everywhere once the stay-at-home orders were in place. And while most of us have our share of embarrassing Zoom stories to share, one of the great things we got out of it was a surge of interest in cast reunions for some of our most beloved movies and TV shows. There were literally dozens of them, whether they came in the form of Josh Gad hosting chats with the casts of Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, and The Lord of the Rings or Instagram meet-ups between the casts of Scandal and Twin Peaks or full-on table reads by the stars of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Orphan Black, and Community. Some shows, like NBC s 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation, even brought their casts back to film brand new quarantine-themed episodes. With so much of Hollywood production stalled at the moment, a lot of entertainment has focused on the hits of the past, and we got to bathe in a whole lot of nostalgia.Streaming Services(Photo by HBO Max)This one is admittedly pretty obvious, but as most of us were stuck at home, we spent a lot more time watching TV than we normally would, and yes, that allowed us to catch up on some of the stuff we d been putting off watching. Lucky for us, though, all of the existing streaming services and a couple of new ones did their damnedest to keep us entertained with lots of new content. HBO Max officially launched in May, offering a giant library of content from the premium cable network and its parent studio, Warner Bros., plus new titles like the Seth Rogen film An American Pickle, the Ridley Scott sci-fi series Raised By Wolves, and the true-crime docuseries I ll Be Gone in the Dark. Hulu gave us new series like Solar Opposites and High Fidelity, as well as the Certified Fresh, quarantine-appropriate comedy Palm Springs. Disney+ sent Onward to streaming early and took a chance on making Mulan a premium VOD purchase, but it also gave us Beyonce s Black Is King and Lin-Manuel Miranda s Hamilton. Then, of course, there s streaming giant Netflix, which basically piled on series after series, from guilty-pleasure reality shows (Tiger King, Love Is Blind, Selling Sunset, Emily In Paris) to high-concept fantasy shows (Cursed, Warrior Nun, the second season of The Umbrella Academy). And this doesn t even include all the stuff we got from Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, and Peacock, among others. Suffice it to say, if you were bored with TV these past six months, you just weren t looking very hard for the good stuff.Shudder(Photo by AMC Networks)While we re spreading the love around the various streamers, we did want to give a shoutout to one in particular which seemed to really come into its own over the year: the horror- and genre-focused Shudder, which is owned by AMC Networks. Launched in 2015, the service has been rolling out a steady supply of Shudder Originals for years, but delivered some of its best and scariest yet during the pandemic, which was good news for horror fans who d been through their Netflix/Hulu/Prime/Max supplies and were looking for new places to get their fill of guts and ghouls. This year, Shudder gave us Mexican socio-political thriller La Llorona, indigenous-focused zombie flick Blood Quantum, creepy anthology The Mortuary Collection, and Host, shot during the pandemic and focusing on a group of friends holding a seance over Zoom. The latter is the best-reviewed horror movie of 2020. The service also began expanding its library, where you ll find the likes of the original Halloween, Re-Animator, and The Changeling, and entered the southern hemisphere, launching in Australia and New Zealand in August.On an Apple device? Also, uniquely for a film about a (very large) band of (very beloved) superheroes, it centered its narrative around its singular villain, one that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the filmmakers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe had been seeding for years: “Thanos is coming” isn’t just the panicked warning of Bruce Banner in Infinity War’s early scenes, it was the tease Marvel had been giving us since Phase One. And Infinity War is the Mad Titan’s movie. It’s his search for the Infinity Stones that drives the narrative, and it’s the snap of his be-gloved fingers that ends it.Joe and Anthony Russo, who joined the MCU with The Winter Soldier, had a mammoth task with Infinity War. Not only did they have to set up a cliffhanger for the ages and provide, working with Josh Brolin, a villain worthy of so many years of buildup, but they were helming one of the most expensive movies ever made and a story whose threads and characters had mostly been established by other filmmakers across 10 years of movies. Here, the brothers explain how they prepared for Infinity War, the logic behind their narrative choices, and working with Brolin to create a villain for the ages – one with whom some might even sympathize.“The central idea of Civil War was for us to break up the Avengers and shatter that relationship between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark.”Anthony Russo: “Civil War is where [the story] started to come into our brains. The central idea of that movie was for us to we wanted to break up the Avengers and shatter that relationship between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark. As we were executing it and we realized how well we were sort of achieving that on an emotional level with the characters, that s when I think our brains started to open up to, ‘My God, they re so vulnerable now.’ Now, you re like, what happens when Thanos comes? So, at some point [while writing Infinity War], yeah, sure, there are many variations [of what could happen], but once the story starts to take shape it really forms in a muscular way around a single idea. He s a profoundly interesting villain who is equal parts empathetic and loathsome. He s also frightening and intimidating and nearly invincible. He s driven, philosophically driven. So, we started very early on with our visual effects team, specifically our visual effects supervisor, Dan DeLeeuw, and trying to figure out how the technology can work and we can actually achieve this. We did a lot of tests, we did tests with Josh Brolin where he would come in, perform, and we would work on it for several months and try to figure out the best version of it. So yeah, that character was built methodically over the entire span of the development of the film.”The Moment: Thanos SnapsThough the world knew Infinity War was one half of a two-part Avengers epic, both parts of which were shot concurrently, few believed the movie would end the way it did: with half the universe dusted – and with some of most beloved MCU characters among the fallen. It was unfathomable. Thanos… won? Shocked audiences wept through the credits – comforted somewhat by that brilliant Captain Marvel teaser – and took to social media to express their despair through every variation of crying/devastated memes. Then came the recriminations: Why the hell didn’t Thor go for the head? Peter Quill was totally to blame for this, right? It felt certain that the universe would be restored in about 12 months – Endgame would release almost a year to the day after Infinity War – but there was no certainty. The end of Winter Soldier, good guys and the bad guys, we flip everything on its head. In Civil War we divorce the Avengers. With Infinity War we knew we wanted to make a strong narrative choice. We felt like that would be hard to watch, and it was: it was hard to watch on set, and it was hard to watch for the audience, I think.”The Impact: Anything Is PossibleThe commercial success of Infinity War, and then Endgame after it, was monumental: Infinity War is now the fifth highest-grossing movie of all time, Endgame is number one. The impact of both goes beyond the box office, though: few movies, perhaps ever, have so dominated the pop-culture conversation. Infinity War was a global cliffhanger the likes of which we’d never seen and the feverish anticipation it built would be what made Endgame the most successful movie ever. As the culmination of the first decade of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the two films cemented that brand’s dominance at the movies – something that looks set to continue with an exciting and expanding Phase 4 and 5. There is a sense that, with its universe-building and crossovers, Marvel and the MCU are changing the very nature – and certainly the business – of commercial cinema (for better or worse, depending on your perspective). For Joe and Anthony Russo, who have directed more films within the MCU than any other director or directing pair, the key to the brand’s success is less about the razzle-dazzle of special effects, or even about the narrative daring it takes to dust half of your leads – it’s about character. Mark turned around in the theater and he thought, ‘Alright, I gotta get out of here before someone hurts me,’ and he snuck out the side door. So we didn t expect that level of emotional response to it.”“In our minds, that s why the Avengers lost in Infinity War – the fact that they were divided.”Anthony: “Look, [Tony and Cap are] the heart and soul of the Avengers, you know. Tony is sorta like an extroverted leader and Cap is like the heart and soul, the moral core of them. For the two of them to have a falling out and have an irreconcilable problem was really devastating to the team as a whole. You know in our minds, that s why the Avengers lost in Infinity War – the fact that they were divided. They weren t functioning as a team in that movie any longer, so they weren t prepared for the universe s greatest threat. I don t know if people can empathize with Thanos, but they can empathize with Star-Lord – the love of his life was murdered by the guy in front of him, and he made a very emotional choice. I think that s the human choice, and that s the truthful choice that you would make in those circumstances. He paid for it with his life, Star-Lord.”Anthony: “Exactly. As storytellers, we find that one of the most empathetic moments in the story. Also, the other thing to focus on his choice, I mean all of these characters make flawed choices. If Thor had not been so angry, and so revenge-driven, he may have killed Thanos faster than he did. The fact that he wanted revenge, he wanted to see in Thanos s eyes as he was killing him, that gave Thanos a window to reverse things on him. All these characters have emotional vulnerabilities that complicate their ability to do what needs to be done. Us watching them fight through that is part of the fun.”Joe: “It s makes them interesting to watch.
