Dingle, the film will center on Virgil Hawkins, a teenager with electromagnetic powers who finds his way into a larger world while still keeping his local streets safe. Originally set in Milestone’s Dakotaverse, it is unclear if Virgil will start his adventures there or as a regular DC hero. As it happens, Static only transferred to the DC Universe in 2008 while his cartoon counterpart made cameo appearances in DC animated shows much earlier. Reportedly, the project will feature a Black actor in the lead – although it is unclear if it will be Clark Kent or one of the various Black Superman characters DC Comics has introduced over the years. In May of 2021, a shortlist of directors including Regina King, Shaka King, and J.D. Dillard emerged, but with Regina King ultimately signing on to adapt Image Comics’ Bitter Root, it seems the shortlist is just down to the latter two.Meanwhile, Michael B. In most cases, Hourman obtains heightened strength and endurance via a pill called Miraclo. Unfortunately, its effects only last an hour and he can only use it once a day. Gavin James and Neil Widener are set to write the script.How It Fits Into The DC Multiverse: Again, we assume this will be set in Barry’s world. Birds of Prey producer Sue Kroll will also produce Black Canary.How It Fits Into The DC Multiverse: Presumably, the film will continue Canary’s story from Birds of Prey – minus the other two members of the team, of course – but it is always possible Green will use the Multiverse to give her version of the character a fresh start.New Gods(Photo by Photo By: Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Release Date: ShelvedWhat We Know: A Wrinkle In Time’s Ava DuVernay was set to direct a film version Jack Kirby’s New Gods for Warner Bros., writing the script alongside Mr. Miracle writer Tom King. The film allegedly would have centered on escape artist Scott Free – aka Mr. Miracle – and his wife Barda. Both are refugees from the plant Apokolips; a miserable world under the grip of the tyrant god Darkseid. Scott was given to Darkseid as a baby by his own father to maintain a peace between Apokolips and the nearby world of New Genesis. Despite the detente, Darksied plots to control the universe and the battle of the New Gods rages on. DuVernay thrilled fans in early 2020 when she said she “may in fact be taking some notes” from the Twitter dream casting threads, which included names like Diego Luna for Mr. Miracle and Gina Carano for Big Barda.Unfortunately, Warner Bros. and DC announced on April 1, 2021 that two of their films in development one of them being New Gods will not be moving forward Their projects will remain in their skillful hands if they were to move forward in the future. As far as we can tell, this was not an elaborate April Fools prank. That said, DuVernay remains attached to the upcoming 2022 CW series Naomi, about a teen superhero, as both writer and executive producer, which keeps her in the DC family.The TrenchRelease Date: ShelvedWhat We Know: As part of an effort to keep Aquaman’s corner of the DC film universe alive, Warner Bros. hired screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to write a script centered on The Trench in February of 2019. As referenced in the film’s early moments, The Trench are the descendants of an Atlantean tribe who devolved into fish monsters after breaking away from the rest of the kingdoms. They can be seen attacking Arthur and Mera’s boat shortly before they make their way to the secret sea. Wan publicly discussed his adoration for the creatures and it seems the project would have develop quickly into an offshoot of Aquaman a la the Annabelle spin-offs from Wan’s The Conjuring series. The film was reportedly set to take place after the first Aquaman film and lean into some horror elements, which of course makes sense, considering Wan s résumé.As with Ava DuVernay s New Gods, however, development of The Trench was also halted indefinitely by Warner Bros. and DC, even though a script for the film had been completed by Gardner and Fitzgerald. The announcement did keep the door open just enough to allow for future developments, but as of now, The Trench is no longer a part of the studio s immediate plans. It was expensive, it was long, and it left plenty of questions about the group of plane crash survivors who landed on a mysterious island. Now, it s clear that Lost didn t just change the way audiences watched television — it forever altered the way TV shows are created.The show s epic pilot showed audiences and networks alike just what type of stories can be told in primetime. Up until that point, procedural staples (like CSI, Law Order, or House) and multi-camera sitcoms (think Two and a Half Men and Will Grace) were the go-to styles of programming. But Lost presented a plethora of deep concepts in a story format mostly unseen by television audiences. On the surface, it was a primetime soap opera about a diverse group of castaways as they fought for survival after a violent plane crash. But underneath that was a layered exploration of the human condition — with the concepts of free will, good vs. evil, and faith regularly playing an important part in this deeply mythologized journey.It was the beginning of a Mystery Box trend in programming, all thanks to Abrams vision and ace showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. Seven years after Lost premiered, and one year after its polarizing series finale, another ambitious program hit television: Game of Thrones.While there are stark differences between the two programs, one can easily draw a straight line from Lost to Game of Thrones.Hear us out: Yes, George R.R. Martin s books existed long before the series even entered development at HBO. Lost, on the other hand, was cobbled together in such a haphazard manner that its success was baffling to Lindelof and ABC. The channel had been struggling for a hit and, after network exec Lloyd Braun watched the Tom Hanks movie Cast Away, he had an idea. What if there was a plane that crashed and a dozen people survived, and nobody knew each other, Braun told Grantland. Your past was almost irrelevant. You could reinvent who you were. You had to figure out — how do you survive? What do you use for shelter, for water? Is it like Lord of the Flies? How do we get off the island, how do you get home? And I start to get very excited about the idea, and I start thinking about the title Lost. Combine that high cost with how the ongoing story was told, processed, regurgitated, and theorized, and the only other program in recent memory to capture the same caliber of attention was Game of Thrones. Swap out the Dharma Initiative, the Smoke Monster, and the Others with White Walkers, dragons, and the Dothraki and the similarities become clearer. There s also the fact that every episode in GoT s final season cost million apiece. It cost HBO about million to produce each episode in the show s previous two seasons. That s pretty crazy when you think about the budgetary restrictions television producers had to work with just a decade ago.Lost featured an ensemble of mostly unknown actors who were cast without a finalized script (which is a head-scratch–worthy detail unto itself). But the characters were instantly iconic and their International diversity became an important component to the story being told as well as the representation it provided for the global audience with which the series ended up connecting. Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) was British, Claire (Emilie de Ravin) was from Australia, Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) was Nigerian, Sun (Yunjin Kim) and Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) were from South Korea, Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) was Scottish, and let s not forget the former Iraqi Republican Guard member, Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews).The diverse nature of the cast not only appealed to a global fandom, the characters helped break down preconceived notions regarding citizens from certain parts of the world.(Photo by © ABC/Courtesy Everett Collection)While the majority of Game of Thrones cast may be white (and British), there is a similarity here in the sense that both shows gave their actors celebrity status the world over. Going from barely getting recognized to packing Hall H at Comic-Con is a feat worth recognition.The cinematic style of Lost also put ABC in a spot it wasn t expecting to be in. Suddenly the network, which boasted plenty of reality programs and game shows, was competing with premium cable entertainment like The Sopranos or The Wire. It was a high concept risk that almost never saw the light of day, and once it did ABC scrambled to bring in Lindelof and Cuse to keep the show afloat.Before HBO offered its own standalone streaming service, and before Hulu was a word that even existed, ABC made new episodes of Lost available to watch on its website just one day after broadcast. This type of digital availability of programming wasn t something audiences or networks were used to. But ABC experimented with this early business model. The iTunes Store was in its infancy, and it would be a few more years before Twitter launched (and Game of Thrones fans would subsequently harness the platform to discuss episodes in real time). And yet the character drama, intricate puzzles, and island mythology that unfolded on ABC s groundbreaking series connected with audiences on a level unlike ever before.Lindelof and Cuse (or Darlton, as the internet began to call them), helped start the trend of putting showrunners in the spotlight. Before Lost, viewers weren t granted such a peek behind the proverbial curtain. D.B. Weiss and David Benioff became the faces of Game of Thrones like Lindelof and Cuse before them. Pixar may be rethinking its strategy after releasing its first film ever in the month of March. The numbers for Pixar s latest work, Onward, were expected to be on the lower end of the scale for the company, but the million opening turned out to even be low for the month in comparison to other animated efforts. The figures come at a time when the industry is potentially facing a new phase where the international dollar cannot be counted on as a safety net if American audiences don’t show up.King of the Crop: Onward Takes the Win, But Numbers Aren t So Magical When Pixar burst onto the scene with Toy Story in 1995, the Thanksgiving release opened with .14 million. Three years later, the studio s follow-up, A Bug’s Life, opened to .52 million. The only other release Pixar has had to start with less than million was their troubled production, The Good Dinosaur (.15 million) – more on that in a bit. All three of those were November releases, a strategy that generally paid off over the years with Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., and The Incredibles – each one with a higher opening than the previous film. It was 11 years before they came back to November with The Good Dinosaur and then two years until they did it again with Coco, which opened to .8 million. Only five of Pixar’s films have failed to reach 0 million. Two of them were their first two films, another two were sequels to Cars, and the other was The Good Dinosaur. Onward is looking like the sixth.It s not for lack of quality. Of the 21 previously released Pixar films, 15 have retained Tomatometer scores of 90 or above. Onward is close, Certified Fresh at 86%, and is actually the third-best–reviewed wide release of 2020 to date behind The Invisible Man and the other new opener this week. Every film from Peabody above passed 0 million eventually, and the average multiple from Robinsons up is a decent 3.61. That would give Onward a first estimate of 2 million, which would at least be higher than The Good Dinosaur’s 3 million but could end up on the rare red side of the Pixar ledger depending on the final budget, which no one is reporting right now. Onward’s tracking was in the mid-40s range, so we re showing some skepticism regarding the argument that panic over public health worries stopped people from hitting the cinemas. Whether that is the case overseas remains to be seen.The Top 10 And Beyond: Bad Boys Passed 0 Million, Emma Goes WideThere have been eight films – by our count – centered around basketball that have opened to million or more: Space Jam, Coach Carter, Uncle Drew, Semi-Pro, White Men Can’t Jump, Glory Road, Like Mike, Blue Chips. The Way Back does not join that list. The Ben Affleck basketball drama, which sees him reteaming with his The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor (who also did sports dramas, Miracle and Warrior), opened to .5 million, which is more in line with romantic hoops films like Just Wright (.28 million) and Love Basketball (.13 million). Those films ended up with .56 million and .45 million, respectively. (William Friedkin’s Blue Chips opened to .12 million and finished with just .07 million.) That is not great for a film budgeted somewhere between million and million, but not a disaster either. The film’s Certified Fresh 87% Tomatometer score is the second-best among 2020’s wide releases and is up there with Affleck’s best-reviewed starring efforts, such as Argo (96%), The Town (93%), Gone Girl (88%), and Chasing Amy (87%).Last week’s number 1 film, The Invisible Man, fell a decent 49% this weekend to .5 million. With million in the bank domestically, that puts it just ahead of The Purge and The Purge: Anarchy with a better second weekend than either Insidious: Chapter 2 or The Purge: Election Year. Last week we placed the film’s first estimate at million. We’re upping that to between million and million. Bad Boys finally passed 0 million domestic, which is added into its 5 million haul worldwide. Sonic’s success is more…fine…as it approaches 0 million worldwide. It’s in profit, if a small one. But a profit is a profit, especially one delayed for touch-up work.Not doing so well but still hanging in there is DC’s Birds of Prey, which is up to million domestic and close to 0 million worldwide. That is going to amount to around a million loss for those invested. That is a drop in the bucket compared to The Call of the Wild. The film is still on the path for around million, but is only at .5 million worldwide right now and it is chasing down a production budget of 5 million. This film could lose anywhere between 5 million and 0 million when the final numbers are in.Finally, Focus expanded the new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma into 1,565 theaters in its third week and it grossed million. How does that compare with Focus s release of 2005’s Pride and Prejudice?2005: Pride and Prejudice – Week 1 (.8 million / 215 theaters), Week 2 (.11 million / 221), Week 3 (.02 million / 1,299)2020: Emma – Week 1 (4,482 / 9), Week 2 (.15 million / 97), Week 3 ( million / 1,565)Pride had already grossed .9 million through its third weekend and finished with .4 million. Emma is up to .8 million. Impractical Jokers: The Movie is now up to .6 million after three weekends. Its launch was earlier and wider than Emma, which will eventually pass it. The 1996 version of Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow, released a year after Clueless, never made it into more than 848 theaters and grossed .23 million.This Time Last Year: Captain Marvel Arrives With a BangCaptain Marvel opened to the third-best March weekend ever with 3.43 million. That made up 77.47% of the top 10 revenue for the weekend, with only How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and A Madea Family Funeral making more than million among the rest of the movies in theaters. They did do a bit better than that, with .68 million and .46 million, but it trailed off from there with The LEGO Movie 2 and Alita: Battle Angel doing just .86 million and .21 million in their respective fifth and fourth weekends of release. The documentary, Apollo 11, did break onto the list with .25 million in just 405 theaters. The top 10 films grossed a total of 8.06 million and averaged 72.7% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top 10 grossed .23 million and averaged 74.1% on the Tomatometer. This is just the ninth time since 2010 that the top 10 films on a March weekend came in with under 0 million.On the Vine: A Controversial Hunt Finally Lands in TheatersNext week audiences will finally have an opportunity to see Craig Zobel’s The Hunt, which was delayed last September in the aftermath of a mass shooting. Vin Diesel takes a stroll into comic-book land with Bloodshot and we have another film about a Christian rock star, I Still Believe, which is hoping to break out for Lionsgate the way Roadside’s I Can Only Imagine did back in 2018. Onward is likely to hold onto the number 1 spot for a second week, but this is the one film that could spring an upset. Look out in your area too for Eliza Hittman’s Never Rarely Sometimes Always. The drama, which premiered at Sundance, has maintained a perfect 100% with critics and is being called one of the year’s best films.
