青空下的约定下载采用百度引擎5(Baidu 9)Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: You shared a video on Instagram of you listening to Love Myself, your song from The High Note – and you seemed completely overjoyed and moved by hearing the song and sharing it with people. Why does it mean so much to you right now to be releasing a song?Tracee Ellis Ross: I think there s lots of pieces to it. Number one, this is a childhood dream that, somewhere along the way, turned into my biggest fear. And I faced that fear and walked through it. And although I had already done the recording and obviously had heard the song before, this was the moment that I was sharing it with people that don t know me.I think it s really important in our lives to celebrate big and small moments. And this felt like a big one for me. Somehow that Instagram Live felt incredibly intimate and also like a party. And I could have never expected that I would feel like that. I ve never really done an Instagram – I mean, I ve gone live for 10 seconds trying to figure out what Live means, but I ve never advertised and planned, you know, a live party and a sharing of something. And it felt so connected and wonderful. There were 10,000 people in there, but it was really special.I also think, in this very real time we re in, where there is so much heaviness, so much loss, so much grief, the loss of livelihoods, the loss of lives, all of this is going on a heaviness that my heart feels like so many other people, it felt really special to have a moment of lightness, a moment of joy, a moment of freedom, and a moment of sharing and connection. Although, in a different way than we are used to, it seemed to really be a moment of light in the middle of that. Then there s the fact that the message of the song is exactly a tonic for the times right now. And I feel like, put down your phone; it doesn t matter what other people think. It s like, what do you think of yourself? Love yourself. And that s the message of the movie. And it felt really special to share that. You know, the message being that no matter the time, no matter the age, the phase, the stage you are at your life, no matter your circumstances, or even people telling you to stay in your lane, it s never too late to go after what you want. It s never too late to be who you are, and it s always worth pursuing that.Rotten Tomatoes: I m sure there is some disappointment that this isn t hitting movie theaters as expected, but it s also a movie that is going to bring joy into people s homes. Is this a movie that s in some ways right for the moment we re in?Ross: You know, I can t really determine that. I think that s for everybody else to decide, but I do hope that this film brings them joy. It s a feel-good movie. It s not a heavy movie. It s a really feel-good empowering movie. And we know music reaches into our hearts. You know, we all thought it was going to be a movie theater theatrical release, but I think this movie is perfectly suited for being in your home. I think it can be shared with your loved ones or watched by yourself. I think people can make an event of it and get themselves a cocktail or put some lemonade in a stemmed glass. I feel like it s one of those movies that makes you go through all the emotions. There s laughter. There s tears. There s joy. And there s music. I mean, what more can you ask for? And there s fashion, by the way, which also is very helpful.Rotten Tomatoes: There was some very good fashion. There is a memorable scene where Grace is trying to clean out her closet, but can t part with anything. Are you like that in real life? Do you struggle to get rid of some of your favorite outfits, or are you a total Marie Kondo?Ross: I am. I am. I m not like Grace in a lot of ways – most ways. I don t share a lot with her. It was really fun to take on the persona of somebody who was larger-than-life like that. And I mean, one of my favorite moments of the movie, by the way, is when Maggie tells Grace that she s dating someone or something and she s like, Does he know about me? That killed me. I was like, wow, way to turn a moment in the wrong direction! So I am not at all like Grace, but I am in that way. It s hard for me to let go of my clothing. I love holding onto stuff. It s hard for me to say goodbye to it.Rotten Tomatoes: Finally, you ve grown up with musicians: Was there anyone who you turned to for advice on playing this role when you got it?Ross: I didn t. You know, the role was so beautifully written from its first incarnation. When I first read that first draft of the script,  it didn t require a lot of research to look elsewhere. Also, it s a world I come from, to a certain extent. There was a lot for me to draw on that just lives within my own experience. But the support that I got mostly came in the studio and in the recording process, which was one of the main places that I started to find who Grace was. And how to find her voice, which was combined with my voice. Rodney Jerkins, who is the producer – a very experienced and well-known producer – was my touchstone. He made me feel so safe and so supported, I was able to walk through my fear and get really comfortable. Then of course I leaned towards friends in moments that I was having panic attacks. I was afraid about what I was doing. I called my sister and my brother who are both singers. And I have a friend that s a manager in the industry, and I called him at one point. But mostly our director, Nisha [Ganatra], was wonderful, and the script was there, so I didn t really have to call on anyone. It was all built into the process. The High Note is available to rent or buy on demand May 29, 2020.

This WEEK S TOP STORYKHALEESI S HAND AND HUSBAND TEAM UP FOR GOOD, BAD UNDEAD(Photo by RCF, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Increasingly, there are a handful of pop culture franchises that together account for the majority of movie stars (the MCU, the DCEU, etc.), and one of those is the cast of HBO s Game of Thrones (especially for British and European actors). Two of the more prominent American stars of Game of Thrones were Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) and Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), and this week, they both signed up for the same vampire movie called Good, Bad Undead. Dinklage will star as the latest in the long line of vampire hunters named Van Helsing, and Momoa will play a vampire who has vowed never to kill again. Teaming up, the two run a grift where they travel from town to town and Van Helsing pretends to defeat the vampire. Good, Bad, Undead will be directed by Max Barbakow, who made his feature film debut with the upcoming Andy Samberg comedy Palm Springs (Fresh at 100%).Other Top Headlines1. SONY S OBSCURE MARVEL PLANS INCLUDE JACKPOT AND MADAME WEB (Photo by Bennett Raglin/Getty Images)In case you missed the news, earlier this month, it was confirmed that Sony Pictures is now using the awkward acronym SPUMC (Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters) to refer to its different projects based on Marvel Comics characters like Venom, Morbius, etc. It s no MCU, but maybe it ll grow on all of us. SPUMC refers to the hundreds of potential films that Sony retains the feature film rights to, most of which are characters that were first introduced in Spider-Man comic books. In addition to Venom and Morbius, Sony has been developing movies for Silver Sable and Black Cat (that project may now be shelved), Silk, and of course, the animated sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (10/7/2022). Many of the remaining characters are currently fairly obscure to mainstream audiences, but Sony appears to be betting that the movies are what will make them famous, not the other way around. One has to figure that is why they re confident with their plans for movies about Jackpot and Madame Web. The first story this week involved TV director S.J. Clarkson (Bates Motel, Jessica Jones), who has been hired by Sony to develop a mystery SPUMC project that most sources are saying (without confirmation) is probably Madame Web. In the comics, Madame Web has been the codename of two different Marvel characters, including a former Spider-Woman, but most people seem to think it s the original Madame Web, who was an elderly blind woman gifted with clairvoyance and other psychic abilities. Sony is reportedly eyeing either Charlize Theron or Amy Adams for the role, which either suggests it s the second Madame Web, or perhaps the movie is just de-aging the original Madame Web. The second story this week concerned Jackpot, an even more obscure Marvel superhero. Sony has hired TV showrunner Marc Guggenheim, the man behind most of the CW s Arrowverse shows, to start work on a Jackpot screenplay. The character in the comics has a rather convoluted story (including there being two different Jackpots), so there are many different ways the film could go, whatever Guggenheim wants to do with it/her/them.2. NICHOLAS HOULT REPLACED BY ESAI MORALES AS MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 VILLAIN (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Especially for big action movie franchises like Mission: Impossible, which take several months to film at locations all around the world, schedules matter, as studios need to know that any given actor will actually be available to show up on set. So as COVID-19 has delayed filming, we re going to see a few actors dropping out of roles. Case in point: Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road) had been cast as the villain in Mission: Impossible 7, but he has left the project due to scheduling concerns, and he s been replaced by Esai Morales of Netflix s Ozark. At 57, Morales is 27 years older  than Hoult, which also begs the question whether the character is staying the same or if it s being rewritten during the hiatus. Mission: Impossible 7 was originally scheduled for July of next year, but the production delays have led to the film being rescheduled for November 19, 2021 (the week after Fantastic Beasts 3).3. RYAN GOSLING RETURNING TO OUTER SPACE (Photo by Daniel McFadden/©Universal Pictures)Ryan Gosling s most recent studio movie was 2018 s First Man (Certified Fresh at 89%) ( https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/first_man ), in which he portrayed astronaut Neil Armstrong during the first manned moon landing in 1969. Possibly coincidentally, Gosling is now attached to star in an adaptation of an upcoming (not yet titled) novel by Andy Weir, who also wrote the eponymous astronaut-in-peril novel upon which the 2015 Matt Damon movie The Martian ( Certified Fresh at 91%) was based. This new film will be produced and directed by the team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who have previously teamed up on movies like 21 Jump Street (Certified Fresh at 84%) and The LEGO Movie (Certified Fresh at 96%). The novel reportedly has the code name Project Hail Mary and tells the story of a lone astronaut in space who is trying to save the planet.4. STEVEN SODERBERGH SPENT QUARANTINE WRITING A SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE SEQUEL (Photo by Claudette Barius/Fingerprint Releasing/©Amazon)Back in March when most people started their stay-at-home time, a popular meme that went around claimed that William Shakespeare used his own quarantine time during the Black Plague to write King Lear. Although most of us probably just used the extra free time to play video games or binge TV shows, surely some people were actually productive, right? Prolific director, producer, and screenwriter Steven Soderbergh (Ocean s 11, Magic Mike, Logan Lucky) apparently was. In an interview this week, Soderbergh revealed that the first 6 or 7 weeks of the lockdown, I finished 3 screenplays, with one of those three projects being a sequel to sex, lies, and videotape (Certified Fresh at 96%). It was an idea that had been circling for awhile, and I felt like I came up with the way to get back in, and so I wrote it, and I wanna make it. Sex, lies, and videotape was, of course, Soderbergh s feature film debut back in 1989, which was also one of the Sundance Film Festival s earliest crossover hits. It s not yet known if the sequel centers on the same characters originally played by James Spader, Andie MacDowell, and Peter Gallagher, or whether any of those actors will return. (Given how recently Soderbergh apparently came up with the concept and wrote it, it s possible he hasn t even talked to them yet.)5. DAVID ARQUETTE ALSO RETURNING IN SCREAM 5 AS DEPUTY DEWEY(Photo by ©Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)Just two weeks ago, we received our most recent and firmest confirmation that a Scream 5 is actually going to happen soon because Neve Campbell confirmed that she s been approached about returning as Sidney Prescott. Campbell is one third of a core trio of Scream franchise regulars along with David Arquette and Courtney Cox, and this week, Arquette also signed on to reprise his role as Sheriff Dewey Riley in the new movie. The fifth Scream movie will be directed by the team called Radio Silence, which most recently gave us last summer s Ready or Not (Certified Fresh at 88%). Unfortunately, Wes Craven is no longer around to be involved with the project, but original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson is now on board as executive producer. You can read more on Everything We Know about Scream 5 right here.6. MINDY KALING TO CO-WRITE REESE WITHERSPOON S LEGALLY BLONDE 3 It feels like a third Legally Blonde has been in development for nearly all of the seventeen years since 2003 s Legally Blonde 2: Red, White Blonde (Rotten at 37%). This week s news suggests that we re going to have to wait a bit longer yet, but it s also positive news for fans in general. Mindy Kaling and TV screenwriter Dan Goor (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Parks Recreation) have been hired by MGM to write Legally Blonde 3, possibly starting from scratch. Reese Witherspoon will indeed return as lawyer Elle Woods, but no other details are known about the premise (such as, for example, whether Kaling might also co-star). In somewhat related news, original Legally Blonde screenwriters Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith have been hired by Warner Bros. to start work on a remake of their 1979 comedy hit 10 (Fresh at 68%), starring Dudley Moore and Bo Derek.7. NICK JONAS TO STAR IN COMIC BOOK MOVIE THE BLACKSMITH (Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)To his credit, pop star-turned-actor Nick Jonas has arguably been one of the highlights of the two most recent Jumanji movies, and soon he s going to get the opportunity to see if his charisma can carry an entire action movie. Jonas and Laurence Fishburne have both signed on to star in the comic book adaptation The Blacksmith for action director Pierre Morel (Taken, Peppermint, From Paris with Love). Jonas will star in the thriller as a weapons expert for the intelligence community (sort of like Q from the James Bond movies) who has to go on the run when his lab is destroyed and his secret agent coworkers are murdered. Fishburne will play the weapons expert who formerly had the Blacksmith s job, and Jonas will also be joined by a female lead, but that role hasn t yet been cast yet.8. HALLE BERRY JOINING JOSH GAD IN DISASTER MOVIE MOONFALL(Photo by RCF/Everett Collection)With his World War II movie Midway in theaters last November, action and disaster movie director Roland Emmerich has turned his attention towards the disaster movie Moonfall, which is exactly what it sounds like (basically, Armageddon but with the Moon). Last week, Josh Gad became the first cast member to join what will end up being a large ensemble cast, and this week, he was joined by one of the original X-Men, Halle Berry. Berry will reportedly play a former astronaut who is now a NASA administrator, no doubt pacing about in a busy control room as reports of hazard and imminent destruction come down from the crew attempting to put the Moon back in orbit. Lionsgate reportedly hopes to release Moonfall in 2021 following a production start in Montreal in the fall (depending upon COVID-19 delays). For the trivia buffs out there, this year marks the 20th anniversary since the last time a film directed by Roland Emmerich scored a Fresh Tomatometer score, with The Patriot (Fresh at 61%) in 2000.9. DON T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER S DEAD (OR THAT THIS MOVIE IS GETTING REMADE) There is a longstanding argument to be made that the best candidates for movies to be remade are films that were bad the first time around. On the other hand, there is often a reason why a movie receives bad reviews, and sometimes, that reason has to do with the premise itself. In the case of the 1991 family comedy Don t Tell Mom the Babysitter s Dead ( Rotten at 36% ), the title may have also been a big part of the negative reaction, but it was at least memorable. With that in mind, a remake of Don t Tell Mom the Babysitter s Dead is indeed now in development with the twist this time around being that it will feature an African American family (Christina Applegate starred in the original). The remake will be directed by Bille Woodruff, whose filmography includes Honey (Rotten at 21%), Honey 2 (Rotten at 10%), and the Queen Latifah comedy Beauty Shop (Rotten at 38%).

ive Pepsi Super Bowl ads. The 28-day shoot wrapped without incident, and seven months later Macgruber was released into 2,551 theater screens, only for critics and audiences to react as if MacGruber had personally upper-decked their toilets. Critics throat-ripped the film, which ended up with a Rotten 48% on the Tomatometer, and audiences proved to be as stingy as MacGruber himself, resulting in a million worldwide box office and a theatrical run of about three weeks.Ten years later, the film has built an audience of die-hard fans who embrace MacGruber’s mission to stop villain Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer) from destroying Washington D.C. The once maligned screenplay by Forte and John Solomon is now appreciated for its flipping of action movie tropes and its borderline psychopathic dedication to making MacGruber as horrible as possible while still somehow making him likable. The film looks like a million dollar movie because of the inspired work by cinematographer Brandon Trost and production designer Robb Wilson King, and the assured direction by Taccone, who was making his feature debut, is so focused and fearless that it has to be appreciated (his drunk DVD commentary is pretty epic, too).As MacGruber celebrates 10 years of polarizing audiences, we decided to look back at what makes it such a beloved cult classic.ITS BOX OFFICE FAILURE WASN T SURPRISING, BUT NEITHER IS ITS CULT STATUS(Photo by Greg Peters/©Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Looking back at MacGruber now, Taccone, Forte, and Solomon couldn’t have believed that their hilariously aggressive R-rated comedy would be as successful as other SNL-based films like Wayne’s World or The Blues Brothers. They were asking summer movie audiences to embrace a profane movie best suited for midnight screenings and home viewings courtesy of the cool friend who let you borrow the DVD. It didn’t feature any A-list stars, it earned poor critical and audience (C- Cinemascore) reviews, and it was sandwiched between 0+ million earners Iron Man 2, Shrek Forever After, Sex and the City 2, and Robin Hood.MacGruber also features one of the most unlikable, insecure, and chauvinistic protagonists which was the joke ever put on screen. Unsuspecting audiences expecting an SNL farce were treated to moments like MacGruber urinating on the charred corpse of his nemesis and sex scenes punctuated by grunting and sweating with pliers and a ghost. These rough edges chased off the majority of the film s viewers but were embraced by a loyal audience who were able to get on the film’s wavelength. Will Forte’s MacGruber follows in the footsteps of other oddball cult characters like Jack Burton (Big Trouble in Little China), The Dude (The Big Lebowski), and Ash Williams (particularly in Army of Darkness), who initially threw audiences for a loop but became fan favorites years later when people began to realize how amazing they were. Between its disappointing box office results, middling Tomatometer score, and divisive comic sensibilities, MacGruber is the perfect example of a cult classic.WILL FORTE WAS 100% COMMITTED TO THE ROLEThere’s a moment in MacGruber when his teammates Vicki Gloria St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig) and Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) are being shot at by mercenaries, and a distraction is necessary. Rising to the occasion, MacGruber pulls down his pants, shoves a stalk of celery in his posterior (Forte’s mom was on set that day), and prances around to draw attention away from his partners. His plan works, the bad guys are wiped out by Piper, and MacGruber takes credit for the kills (classic MacGruber). What makes the scene work is that there’s no winking at the camera or goofy caricature; Forte plays MacGruber totally straight. It s this commitment that allows him to pull off the kind of moment when MacGruber explains exactly how far he s willing to go to enlist Lt. Piper s help. You believe his desperation, hubris, and sadness, and that s what makes him unique. Will Forte fully inhabits the 54-year old character (someone did the math), who has no problem crying, pleading, or getting naked in a cemetery to have loud sex with the ghost of his wife. Forte somehow finds a way to make MacGruber nuanced enough for us not to hate him, but also not quite likable enough for us to admire him. The guy is a complete idiot who uses his teammates as human shields, and he doesn’t understand why Von Cunth his former best friend hates him after he stole his fiancée and convinced her to abort his child (pretty dark for an SNL movie, right?). Despite all of that, MacGruber actually gets things done (albeit usually in a roundabout or incorrect way); he rips throats, defuses bombs, and gets revenge on KFBR2392 (Forte actually wrote out all of the KFBR2392 doodles in his notebook).Forte does everything in his power to make the character look bad onscreen, and we appreciate that effort. It takes someone who is committed to the role and doesn’t mind looking stupid in the process, which is admirable in its own way and frequently priceless in comedy.DIRECTOR JORMA TACCONE AND WRITERS WILL FORTE AND JOHN SOLOMON HAD FREE REIN TO DO WHAT THEY WANTED Our budget was not huge, and as a result of that, we were kind of given free rein to do whatever the hell we wanted to do, which was really exciting.   Will Forte,  A.V. Club, 2010One benefit of a miniscule budget (for a modern-day, wide-release film) is that there aren’t many studio notes to consider or nervous executives lingering around. Nowadays, million is probably the budget for a Marvel movie’s craft services alone, and since Taccone and crew were able to stay on schedule and complete each day’s shot list, they further avoided more eyes on the project. They took that freedom and created an action film with moments so twisted, you don’t know if you should laugh. MacGruber’s monologue about how he met his deceased wife is jaw-dropping, and it’s told in such a matter-of-fact way that it takes a moment for the joke to register. Even Ryan Phillippe’s disgust is so subtle that it doesn’t immediately clue you in to the fact that it s supposed to be funny. That’s the occasional brilliance of MacGruber. The finale of the film sees Mac engaging in a super violent confrontation with Von Cunth. At first, MacGruber is only too eager as he has been for the entire film to cut off Von Cunth’s penis and shove it down his mouth. But when Mac realizes the appendage in question was blown off in an explosion he himself failed to prevent, he pushes Von Cunth off a cliff, shoots him with a machine gun on the way down, launches a grenade at his lifeless body, and finally urinates on the flaming corpse. The overkill is exceptional, and even though it’s playing on over-the-top kills in prior action films, the scene is edited so straight that it gives viewers zero catharsis in regards to the villain dying. Taccone and Forte ask the viewer to accept an awful lot of awfulness and doesn t apologize for it, because MacGruber the rare film that really goes for it, consequences be damned.IT’S A PERFECT SPOOF OF BOMBASTIC 1980s ACTION FILMS“The Legendary MacGruber. Former Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Green Beret. Served six tours in Desert Storm, four in Bosnia, three each in Angola, Somalia, Mozambique, Nicaragua, and Sierra Leone. Recipient of 16 Purple Hearts, three Congressional Medals of Honor, seven Presidential Medals of Bravery, and starting tight end for the University of Texas, El Paso.” When we are first introduced to MacGruber, we learn that he faked his death and has been living in Rambo-esque isolation in Ecuador since his fiancée was blown up by Dieter Von Cunth on their wedding day. After Phillippe s Lt. Piper recalls MacGruber’s past achievements, a child disrespectfully steals MacGruber’s necklace and makes a fool out of him. For the next 85 minutes, the film pumps MacGruber up, only to promptly deflate his hero credentials each time.Taccone and Forte were inspired by Die Hard, Rambo: First Blood Part II, and Road House,  and they wrote MacGruber as an homage to them. They took the well-known tropes of those films the heroes are amazing lovers, brilliant with guns, and impossible to kill and flipped them on their heads. While MacGruber is occasionally successful (he literally can rip throats, remember), his lovemaking is sweaty and loud, he’s afraid of guns, and he rather enjoys having bullet holes in his body.In the end, MacGruber saves the day, but he blows up his first team of war heroes, uses his comrades as human shields, and puts his crew in dangerous situations that are so frightening they pee their pants. In other words, he’s far from a hero, despite his heroics, but that also makes him a rather effective parody of the action stars who preceded him.THE SUPPORTING CAST IS ACESAfter 10 years, the sight of Kristen Wiig disguised as MacGruber or the bearded hitman Hoss Bender is still hilarious. Wiig’s performance as capable agent and talented vocalist Vicki St. Elmo is an absolute delight. It’s an all-in performance that features her screaming loudly in coffee shops and dodging Will Forte’s sweat during their outrageous love scene. The brand of weird self-delusion that she brings to the film serves as the perfect complement to MacGruber s antics the two of them seem happily in sync discussing whether Vicki’s going to take a number one or two when she walks off to the bathroom. On the other hand, Ryan Phillippe’s performance as Lt. Dixon Piper is wonderfully straight-faced, and he’s at his best when he’s listening to MacGruber recall the shocking details of his history with Cunth, his body language subtly communicating the gradual horror that overcomes him. Val Kilmer is also perfectly cast as the pony-tailed Dieter Von Cunth, bringing balance to Forte s manic energy with his wry delivery and sarcasm. Powers Boothe adds dignity and gravitas to the role of Colonel Faith, and former WWE wrestler Chris Jericho offers a scene-stealing cameo as Frank Korver, a friend of MacGruber who loves hearing his dick jokes.MacGruber is the star of the show, of course, but without a supporting ensemble who understood the material, the movie couldn’t have worked. That’s why we hope the folks at NBCUniversal have the good sense to recruit the same cast for the MacGruber TV series co-written by and starring Forte that was announced earlier this year for the Peacock streaming service. That s right: Soon you ll be able to watch the clueless buffoon spout casually offensive lines and blow up his friends every week, and if done right, it could be a lot of fun.Where You Can Watch It NowFandangoNOW (rent/own), Amazon (rent/own), Google (rent/own), iTunes (rent/own), Vudu (rent/own)MacGruber was released on May 21, 2010. 3. 激战团竞模式
This might sound strange considering it just premiered on The CW, but the network and Warner Bros. Television should bring back Swamp Thing. We’ll be honest, we were big fans of the series when it debuted on the DC Universe streaming service last year. Both feeling like a proper Swamp Thing comic and the mature readers line of comics it spawned in the 1990s, it took its subject seriously and began building out a fascinating world for Swamp Thing and his true love, Dr. Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed), to explore. Oh, also, it was not afraid to introduce a relationship between a woman and a plant-based creature. Its mixture of gothic romance and horror set it apart from the other offerings on the service and just about every other DC show Warner Bros. Television had in production at the time. Then, it was over before it even really began. So we’re definitely pleased to see people are finally discovering the magic in the swamps around Marais, Louisiana, thanks to The CW’s rebroadcast of the series.Which means it’s time for Warner Television and The CW to hear us out: We need more Swamp Thing. But before we can make our case, let’s look back on what happened to the show in the first place. The Fall and Rise of Swamp ThingAs part of the original DC Universe lineup – which include the live action Titans, Doom Patrol, Stargirl and the animated Young Justice and Harley Quinn, a lot of money was poured into the series. Battlestar Galactica’s Mark Verheiden took on the task of developing the series and an expensive swamp set was built near Wilmington, North Carolina. As opposed to the previous Swamp Thing series, this new version would focus on Abby and her experiences coming back to her hometown and facing a “swampborne” virus. At least, that was the initial pitch.Reed was soon cast as Abby and the ensemble filled out with Maria Sten, Will Patton, Henderson Wade, and Kevin Durand all playing characters from various Swamp Thing stories. Virginia Madsen and Jennifer Beals played characters made for the series to round out its world while Jeryl Prescott and Ian Ziering signed up to become the first live action versions of Madame Xanadu and Blue Devil – DC Characters with their own supernatural histories. Meanwhile, Derek Mears was cast in the title role with Andy Bean as Swamp Thing’s human form, Dr. Alec Holland. As DC Universe went live, production began, but trouble soon followed once it, DC Universe, and the whole of Warner Bros. empire became part of the AT T family. The newly reformatted WarnerMedia took stock of its assets and Swamp Thing seemed something of an outlier. In April 2019, the last three episodes were slashed from the order forcing a brief production pause so Verheiden and his staff could turn episode 10 into a season finale. Some reports suggested creative differences were to blame while others pointed to a miscalculated tax credit as the cause of the fuss.(Photo by 2020 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved.)Then the first episode streamed on DC Universe that May. But before the second could reach fans, DC Universe pulled the plug. No clear reason was given — beyond the first inkling that DC Universe would not be long for this world — and the stories of creative tension and budget shortfalls sprang up again. Some pointed to that swamp set and its price tag as being too rich for the new bosses. In any event, it was clear the series didn t fit with the already-brewing vision of a Warner streaming service which would emerge as HBO Max, and so it was the only DC Universe scripted series to get the axe.It is ironic then, that Swamp Thing’s CW premiere would vault into the broadcast top 10 its  week. In a curious twist of fate, The CW acquired the broadcast rights to the series early last summer. Due to the worldwide pandemic, the network decided to postpone all of its usual fall offerings to 2021 as it was clear production could not resume in time for the customary October premieres. In lieu of The Flash and Legacies, The CW hoped Swamp Thing and the Canadian drama Coroner could fill the gap. So far, the bet is paying off with Swamp Thing’s 90-minute premiere earning a 0.2 rating with 1.1 million viewers – reportedly the best numbers the network has seen in its timeslot since May.And considering the show just gets better with each episode, it is entirely possible Swamp Thing could become a hit The CW would want more of in the years ahead. Network president Mark Pedowitz suggested last May a discussion between the network and Warner Bros. Television could happen under the right circumstances. Granted, putting a second season together would be as big of a challenge as designing a quality Swamp Thing TV show in the first place. The Challenge of The Swamp Thing

7.15.7 9月喜迎The cast of Big Little Lies revealed a few tidbits about season 2, Jared Harris discussed scary new HBO miniseries Chernobyl, Danai Gurira is leaving The Walking Dead, and more TV news.TOP STORYNew Big Little Lies Season 2 Photos —Plus, Meryl Streep Was As Addicted to the Show as You Were(Photo by Jennifer Clasen/HBO)If Big Little Lies was going to come back for a second season, the story had to be pretty darn compelling for stars and executive producers Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman (along with costars Zoe Kravitz, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley) to sign on. But when audiences continued to beg for more episodes of the Monterey, California moms embroiled in a real-life murder mystery, the cast and creator/writer/executive David E. Kelley said that finally agreed to come back — with a few caveats.“The storytelling — would it be compelling enough that it would rise up to the first year? Everybody up here can get jobs. We didn t want to do this unless we could at least have a fair shot of living up to the bar that we felt we had all set in year one,” Kelley told reporters at a panel for season 2 at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon. “So we met, and we talked about what the stories were. We were very unflinching and candid with each other about the ones we thought were viable and the ones we thought were not good enough, and we didn t finally agree to set sail until we had the commitment from all of us that this was storytelling that we all felt passionate about.”(Photo by Jennifer Clasen/HBO)While the first season had the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty to use as a guide, there was no sequel — until Moriarty, who is also a producer, wrote an outline for Kelley to use while plotting season 2’s story.“We were lucky Liane Moriarty wrote almost like a novella for us to use as a template,” said Witherspoon. “It really helped tremendously that the characters were alive in her mind and have these very rich experiences that were just as interesting, entertaining, as in-depth as they were in the original series. So that gave us some basis for which to go on for each character. We all had unresolved issues — you know, I had an affair and that was never resolved.”(Photo by Jennifer Clasen/HBO)While Kelley and his cast remained tight-lipped on what the actual plot of season 2 will entail, he did reveal that it picks up after the events of the first season. It’s still a mix of comedy and drama, tonally — “probably more dramatic than comedic this year,” he teased — and the Greek Chorus of fellow school parents at the fatal trivia night is gone.“When we come back, their lives — like all of our lives — are very well put together on the surface, but then the fissures begin to emerge and there is a big fault line that lies under all of us, which is this event that happened at trivia night last year,” Kelley explained. “So once the crevices start to widen it escalates pretty quickly.”(Photo by Jennifer Clasen/HBO)There’s also one major addition: Meryl Streep joins the cast as Celeste’s mother-in-law, Mary Louise Wright.“I love this show. I was addicted to it,” Streep gushed. “I thought it was an amazing exercise in what we know and what we don t know about people, about family, about friends; how it flirted with the mystery of things; what was unsaid, un-shown, unknown was sort of the whole gravitational pull of the piece and it was so exciting. So when I got the chance to join the crew I thought, yeah! [As for] the dynamic between Celeste and me, I do love her. And that s the only thing I ll tell you.”The Walking Dead Loses Another Major StarFans of The Walking Dead are used to their favorite stars exiting the series — there are gruesome deaths pretty much weekly (it is a zombie show, after all) — but this latest departure is going to hurt: Danai Gurira, who plays the badass Michonne, is leaving in season 10. The Black Panther star will appear in “a handful of episodes that will be interspersed throughout season 10,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Not all hope is lost, however — THR reports that she’ll likely join her former on-screen love Andrew Lincoln, a.k.a. recently departed leading man Rick Grimes, in the series of three TWD movies AMC is planning to produce. Will Veep Give Viewers a Satisfying Ending?(Photo by Lacey Terrell)In such a politically volatile world, it’s been challenging for the team behind Veep to push boundaries in its final season. But the series has given itself one key advantage in its ability to poke fun at politics without garnering too much ire on either side of the aisle.“We have this great virtue of having not identified a party in our show and not really identified any contemporary political figures,” Julia Louis-Dreyfus told reporters at a Television Critics Association winter press tour panel for the show’s final season. “We re in an alternate universe and that’s helpful particularly because in many ways it’s why the show’s lasted as long as it has — because it kind of invites everyone to the party. I think in a way it s more apt than it ever has been given the current insanity that we re all living in.”The final season will consist of seven episodes, which showrunner Dave Mandel said will bring the show to its natural conclusion.“We reached just a very natural point, storytelling-wise, that we sort of looked at each other and went, ‘I think that s the end.’”While neither Louis-Dreyfus nor Mandel would get too specific about exactly what adventures ex-president (and ex-veep) Selina Meyer will have in the last episodes, which begin airing March 31 on HBO, they did tease a surprising (and satisfying) ending.“The one trap that the viewers ever so slightly fall into is assuming that somebody is Trump and somebody is Hillary, and that s a good thing for us because it means we get to always surprise you. It doesn t go the way you think it went when they ran against each other,” Mandel said. “I think this season, it sounds so generic, but I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised in a very, you know, hopefully funny way.”Added Louis-Dreyfus, “I m not going to say that Selena evolves, except to say that she s truer to herself by being as true to herself as she can possibly be. By the time this season ends. I ll leave it for you to determine whether or not that s a good thing, but I m not sure that evolution is necessarily her game.”Jared Harris Tackles a Different Terror in HBO’s Chernobyl(Photo by Liam Daniel/HBO)Is there something about The Terror star Jared Harris that inspires him to play scary, evil, or general sad-sack characters who die horrible deaths?“I’m a miserable person,” joked Harris at a TCA panel for his new HBO miniseries Chernobyl, about the 1986 nuclear meltdown in the Ukraine. In all seriousness, though, Harris said he was drawn to his role in Chernobyl (and The Terror) because of “good writing. Really, if you re working on a script that s really well-written, our job is much, much easier and more interesting as well because you can dig down into the story, you can dig down into the subtext and the substrata of the narrative and you can find stuff there that s been put down purposefully.”The five-part miniseries, which also stars Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson,  follows the brave men and women who sacrificed so much to save Europe from complete disaster after one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history.Serial’s Story Continues in The Case Against Adnan SyedIf you are not one of the millions of people who was captivated by the Serial podcast in 2014, HBO’s new four-part documentary The Case Against Adnan Syed will fill you in on the case, which saw Baltimore high school senior Adnan Syed convicted for the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend, 18-year-old Hae Min Lee. The podcast examined the evidence in the case and whether Syed was wrongfully convicted. The new documentary will pick up where Serial left off, so it won’t be a retread of the podcast either.“It s gone through current events, just as recently as a couple of months ago,” said director Amy Berg. The documentary follows Syed’s legal team as they prepare an appeal for a new trial after questions about the State’s case and his own attorney’s performance.“Any time a wrongful conviction seems to be getting successfully challenged the system closes in, it doubles down, it trickles down, and it tries to protect itself and we expected that. We expected we were going to fight as far as it s going to take,” said Rabia Chaudry, a family friend and lawyer who has advocated for Syed for 20 years (and was the driving force behind the Serial podcast). “The State is going to continue to appeal it. It s not a surprise. And there s a reason for that. I understand the reasons for that. It s not always about the truth. It s about kind of maintaining status quo. So it s not surprising. It is more complicated. However, when there s so much notoriety around the case it gives more incentive for the State to save face and to save the conviction and to fight harder.”The Kominsky Method Books Major Guest Stars(Photo by Mike Yarish/Netflix)Netflix’s award-winning comedy The Kominsky Method will welcome three major guest stars in its second season: Jane Seymour, Jacqueline Bisset, and Paul Reiser. Seymour will play Madelyn, a 70-something well-to-do woman with whom Norman (star Alan Arkin) had a mad love affair in the ’60s before he met his wife, and they meet again 50 years later. Bisset will play Gabrielle, Mindy’s (Sarah Baker) mom and Sandy’s (star Michael Douglas) French ex-wife who delights in still being able to push the buttons of her ex-husband. Reiser will play Martin, a 60-something high school teacher who gets romantically involved with Sandy’s daughter, Mindy.
If you ever thought a hybrid of The Big Sick and Michael Mann s Collateral sounded like a terrific idea, this week s Stuber might be the ride for you. Like The Big Sick, Stuber stars Kumail Nanjiani as a mild-mannered Uber driver named Stu, of course who is roped into a frequently violent wild goose chase across Los Angeles in search of a murderous drug dealer. The large, imposing man responsible for said roping is LAPD detective Vic Manning (played by Dave Bautista), who requires Stu s services because he s recovering from a Lasik operation. Will the two of them learn to put aside their differences and work together in harmony? Will they help each other confront some hard truths about themselves? Will cars be chased and heads be busted? The answer to all of those questions is likely to be yes, and critics say it s a little disappointing that Stuber doesn t do more with its talented cast, which also includes Karen Gillan, Mira Sorvino, and Betty Gilpin. There s also quite a bit of violence and a some tonal inconsistencies, but if you don t mind that, there may some fun to be had here.

His role as hirsute satyr Mr. Tumnus in The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe got him major exposure, and an in with the young crowd. McAvoy started to pick up awards attention while on the peripheral in the Forrest Whitaker-starring The Last King of Scotland, a fitting fate considering the observer character he played in that Idi Amin biopic. The Best Picture-nominated Atonement quickly followed. But it was his role in the raucous Wanted that proved his breakthrough, and that maybe McAvoy could hack it in action blockbuster world. This led to his most iconic role yet, that of Professor X as the X-Men sidewined into the past with First Class. His matchup against Michael Fassbender s Magneto remains among the most engaging hero/villain feuds in superhero cinema. 2019 was one of his busier years, appearing in three movies, all sequels wrapping up their franchises: Dark Phoenix, IT Chapter Two, and Glass. With that, we re ranked all James McAvoy movies by Tomatometer!

When Does The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Premiere? The series was initially slated to debut in August 2020 and follow Disney+’s customary release pattern with one new episode per week for the six-week run. The title, along with its MCU series brethren WandaVision and Loki, was among the first productions to shut down in response to the emerging COVID-19 pandemic in March.During the December 10, 2020 Disney Investor Day, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced that the series premieres March 19, 2021. And that is now the official release date. The program is still considered a limited series, so do not expect a second season to be forthcoming. Although, you never know what tricks Marvel may pull to turn its limited series plans into ongoing prestige programs. And even if The Falcon and the Winter Soldier remains a one-off event, Marvel has plans for many more series in the works. When Does The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Take Place?(Photo by Marvel Studios/Disney+)Click image to see full poster in a new window. As with seemingly all of the announced Disney+ shows, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will occur sometime after Endgame. How much later is still up for debate and that span of time is important for an number of reasons. For one: both Sam and Bucky were snapped away in Avengers: Infinity War and presumed dead for five years. They will have to re-establish themselves as living persons. And while this m

According to Convery, the series is very much “a magical adventure with friends saving the world.”That description may surprise fans of Lemire’s comic, which the author described as “a little more violent and darker, in general.” But as Mickle developed the series alongside Arrow veteran Schwartz, he kept Lemire apprised of the tonal change, which he came to appreciate as apocalyptic stories became a larger TV genre in the 10 years since he completed the Sweet Tooth comic. “Just to do it like that again might feel like the same thing we d seen a thousand times. And so I think reinventing the tone a little bit to reflect today rather than where we were even a decade ago was the right move.”Part of that reinvention is the regular presence of James Brolin’s voice as an unseen narrator. In the first part of the season, he appears to bookend the episodes and offer some commentary as new characters are introduced. Brolin’s older, relaxed voice definitely sets a tone, although Mickle once again credited Lemire with the notion of a narrator. “Jeff uses every tool in the toolbox in terms of telling stories: voiceover, elliptical storytelling, poetry, seriality, dreams. He does everything,” he explained. In the original comic, that narration could switch among the various characters or even an omniscient voice presiding over everything. That latter voice appealed to Mickle as it allowed him to tie the journey of Gus and Jeppard – and their emerging bond – to the stories of characters they may not meet for awhile. “With the nature of all this, it felt like there was a storybook and a fairy tale thing coming from the story that we could pull out of the comic book. And that felt like an opportunity to kind of unify it or help guide us through that. Schwartz added: “It helps set the tone as well for this fairy tale dystopia that we re telling, and it gives a slight magical element to it.” But It Still Has Room For Suburban Horror(Photo by © Netflix)While Gus’s journey has that magic to it, Dr. Aditya Singh (Adeel Akhtar) faces something more akin to suburban horror. He has memories of the old world and he is surrounded by a stitched-together community trying to preserve some sense of it, providing for a dystopian atmosphere with its own forms of terror. Meanwhile, he is also tasked with researching the disease which led to the fall of civilization – a role he shares with his comic book counterpart.“I do love what they did with Singh,” Lemire said. As he recalled, the Singh of the comics was much further along on his “path” when he becomes part of its narrative. “In the comic, we needed him at a point where he s already on the path, but I never really told his origin story so much.” That origin story as presented on the television series may surprise readers, but according to Lemire, it gives him such an emotional breadth and his relationship with his wife, Rani, is so rich on screen.” He even admitted he wished he had the time to explore the Singhs the way the show does. It s such a rich story line that it s probably my favorite as well, he added. But worry not fans of Singh or his place in the comics: Lemire said the character will likely find himself in similar circumstances and the suburban horror he faces may change out for another horrific situation. Its Main Antagonist Will Be Familiar Voice Even If His Face Is Unrecognizable(Photo by © Netflix)Someone who may put Singh on that path is General Abbot, played by a nearly unrecognizable Neil Sandilands. He looks more like REM’s Michael Stipe than the polished Thinker fans of The Flash will remember, but his voice work will recall that other DC villain s brilliance. “Everything about it was the right choice for this part,” Schwartz said.At the same time, the actor’s chameleon-like ability to become another person was also advantageous to the producers as it gave the “left-of-field” character an intriguing new look. Also, as Mickle explained, “this kind of showmanship quality” appeared which solved a problem they were having with casting the part. “[The character] has the gravitas, but also, your hero is a kid with antlers and [deer] ears. So, how do you find someone that can match the visual panache of that?”And so Sandilands gave the character a long beard, which may or may not have been the actor’s own lockdown beard. “When we saw him, we were like, whoa, he s exactly what we didn t realize we want for the character,” Schwartz said.Of course, it is important to recall that Abbot is an antagonist and not necessarily a DC Universe-style villain. But his real reasons for finding hybrid children like Gus will nevertheless chill viewers when it comes to light. It’s Hopeful… And Younger People Can Watch It, Too(Photo by © Netflix)Despite the darker corners of the world Singh and Abbot inhabit, the series is meant to be hopeful. “The show really touches your heart in a way that gives you hope and positivity in dark times,” Convery said when asked about its unexpected tone. For Anozie, there was an added irony in becoming part of Sweet Tooth in the midst of a pandemic. “I think it s key to recognize that Sweet Tooth was written a decade ago and it s a coincidence that it helps us relate to it more having gone through the pandemic in the last year, he said. Nevertheless, he agreed with Convery that it does convey a message of hope [and] that we can do anything if we rely on each other.”That sense of hope definitely lends the show a broader appeal to a younger set of viewers, with Convery saying its sense of adventure makes it “more of a PG to PG 13 situation.” Anozie suggested the show could be watched by viewers as young as 8 or 9, “at the parents discretion as to whether those kids can watch,” of course.(Photo by © Netflix)“We definitely wanted to make a show that you could watch with your kids,” Schwartz added. “There are some dark moments, but the themes I feel are all skewed towards hopefulness.”To Mickle, the tone of the show not far from classic kids’ movies like E.T.: The Extraterrestrial or The Goonies – films made for kids, but which were nonetheless “frigging dark.”And, as it happens, Lemire is looking forward to sharing the show with his own son, who is roughly the same age as Gus: “I m excited to watch it with him and have it be something that kind of just walks the line between what I m comfortable showing him and certain things that I know will frighten him a little. I think when you can walk that line, you probably got it right.Sweet Tooth premieres June 4 on Netflix. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

青空下的约定下载 Moonlight is a once-in-a-generation film. A masterpiece. And yes, we know the word is thrown around liberally, but in this case it is the only word that can aptly describe Barry Jenkins sophomore work. Under his direction, from a screenplay he co-wrote, three actors masterfully embody Chiron, a young Black boy – and then man – from South Miami. The cinematography paints a color story that is as compelling as the narrative itself, with Nicholas Britell’s masterful score tailored to enrich every moment, and Moonlight’s delicate screenplay carefully masks its intentions for much of the runtime. The audience is halfway through the third act before it even reveals itself – this is not just a slice of life story about a young Black boy from the hood, this is a love story. Jenkins may have been robbed of his moment by the infamous envelope fiasco at the 2017 Oscars, but nothing can rob the film of its legacy as one of the best films of the decade – arguably, of all time. – Jacqueline Coley, Editor

Spoiler warning: The following contains giant spoilers for Avengers: Endgame. So if you don t wanna know what happens, stop right here. Sony Pictures released a new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer on Monday, coinciding with the end of Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo’s online spoiler ban. And it is no surprise as the trailer is a huge spoiler for anyone who has not seen the recent Avengers movie. Although, considering that film continues to destroy box office records, we would be very surprised to discover someone who hasn’t seen it.As the trailer is a spoiler, it is filled with useful information for those tracking the progress of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a few lingering plot points from Endgame, and info on the upcoming Phase 4 of the MCU. So let’s dive in and examine some of the things we learned from the trailer. It Is Set After Endgame(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)This one might sound obvious, but considering the span of time between Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War, there was a suspicion the movie might take place prior to the Snap. Many noted Nick Fury s (Samuel L. Jackson) nice to meet you, Spider-Man in the previous trailer, despite both being at Tony Stark s (Robert Downey Jr.) funeral. Also, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently reframed the film as the last Phase 3 story instead of the first taste of Phase 4. Add Endgame’s five-year time-jump and you get a recipe for a potential Far From Home set sometime in 2017 or 2018.But thanks to its opening moments declaring the passing of Tony Stark and the heart-to-heart between Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), it is clear the film is indeed set after Endgame. That means the film, even if it is the last Phase 3 chapter, will offer audiences a glimpse into the post-Endgame world. In the previous trailer, we saw notable parts of New York being rebuilt, which suggests the Snap survivors left many of the parts of the world to ruin after half the world’s population disappeared. Beyond those background details, though, the Snap and the five-year gap will have a very personal effect on Peter as he adjusts to the world. Most Of Peter’s Friends Disappeared With Him(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)MJ (Zendaya), Ned (Jacob Batalon), Betty (Angourie Rice), and even nominal high school bully Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) are all the same age as Peter – which means they all disappeared in the Snap. That might seem minor, but every single one of them has lost five years. It remains to be seen how many of them returned to a stunned family – in fact, we’re still not clear if Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) lived through the five year gap – or the effect that may have on them going forward. The summer trip to Europe may be as much a chance for them to re-acclimatize to the new world as it is a school activity. But as Laura Harrier and Michael Keaton are currently on the cast list, we expect Liz and her father Adrian experienced the full five years of Endgame. You have to wonder how that changed them We re in the Multiverse Now, and Mysterio Is From A Tangent Reality … Well, Maybe(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It seems the Ancient One’s (Tilda Swinton) fears were founded after all as Fury tells Peter the Snap tore a hole in “our dimension.” Peter is also introduced to Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal), a man who claims to be from an alternate Earth. We’re assuming he is from one of the tangent realities the Ancient One warned Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) about in Endgame. We’re also assuming that “hole” is how Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) managed to get back from the tangent reality he created to have a life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).Of course, it is always possible Beck is lying. He is Mysterio after all, a guy who faked an alien invasion back in the comics just to rob a bank. If he’s anything like his comic-book counterpart, he could using the Snap to win Fury’s trust. Alternatively, he could be a dimension-hopping bad guy with an interest in ending Spider-Man across the multiverse. Or should we say “Spider-Verse?” There is also the possibility that he is telling the truth and the MCU will give us a 100% noble Mysterio. But that seems quite unlikely. Peter almost always gets betrayed by the people he lets into his confidence, and we expect this to be no different.Captain Marvel is Carol Danvers’ Superhero Name(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)OK, this is a small one, but considering no one in Captain Marvel or Endgame refers to Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) by her superhero codename, we’re clocking this as the first time anyone officially refers to her as Captain Marvel. We also expect the scene in which Peter asks about Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain Marvel will be a little longer and hint at what Bruce, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), and some of the other heroes are doing during this latest crisis.Nick Fury Is In Charge(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Also, isn’t interesting to see Nick Fury in charge of an organization again? The manpower and equipment we see in the trailer suggest S.H.I.E.L.D., but S.H.I.E.L.D. patches appear to be absent on the people manning the various work stations surrounding Fury, Peter, and Mysterio in the trailer. Either they have been removed digitally to maintain the surprise or Fury has a new organization entirely. Is it time for S.W.O.R.D. to make its MCU debut? In the comics, their mandate is to keep Earth safe from alien incursions. Would their MCU jurisdiction include alternate Earths? At the same time, the whole notion of tangent realities makes it really easy for Fury to resume his post at S.H.I.E.L.D. while the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series gets its own world to play with. It still makes them connected, just in a less immediate way.Peter Has A Great Iron Man-level Responsibility, And Could Be Phase 4 s Lead Hero(Photo by @ Sony Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Considering Phases 1-3 were led by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), the Far From Home trailer seems to position Peter as the key hero going into Phase 4. Or, at least, that seems to be Peter’s perception. That talk with Happy early on literally puts the weight of Iron Man on him. And the subsequent scene with the NYPD officers raises the question with Spider-Man s reality: is Peter the next Iron Man?Since he still has the Iron Spider suit, signs should be pointing to yes. But it also seems likely that the film will confront this key question: Is Peter a kid, playing at being the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, or is he a man ready to lead the superheroes? It is entirely possible he will walk away from the film knowing he is not the next Iron Man, putting someone else in the hot seat. Then again, the film could see this whole Spider-Man “Home” story cycle in a new light as he accepts the mantle, and the great responsibility which comes with it.Should Phase 4 see Peter s friendly neighborhood grow to the size of a galactic quadrant – or a multidimensional band of realities – Far From Home may set him on this path. At the same time, it may also illustrate for him that he still has a lot to learn before he can lead the Avengers – or whatever they re calling themselves now – in the MCU s bold future.Spider-Man: Far From Home is in theaters July 2, 2019Like this? Everyone is talking about Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom for one reason above all: the Netflix Original features the final performance by Chadwick Boseman, who shockingly died of cancer over the summer. And as the first reviews arrive for the biographical drama, based on August Wilson’s 1982 play of the same name, Boseman continues to receive the majority of attention, mostly in the form of praise for his last work. But there are other reasons to look forward to the movie, including Viola Davis’ performance as the titular “Mother of the Blues” as well as Wilson’s powerful writing and some unforgettable moments as directed by George C. Wolfe. Here’s what critics are saying about Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom:Let’s get right to it: How is Boseman’s final performance?Boseman is a revelation.  Fionnuala Halligan, Screen InternationalOn a whole other level here… Watching him in this film is an absolutely hypnotic experience.  Joey Magidson, Awards RadarBoseman’s performance really is the stuff of acting legend…[he] will make you feel like screen actors rarely are able to do.  J. Roger Friedman, Showbiz 411How is the film as an adaptation? You can feel the full force of Wilson’s play barrel down from the stage and into your living room. Oliver Jones, ObserverThis Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom feels not just adapted but accelerated, as if it were racing to meet the deadline its own characters keep putting off. Justin Chang, Los Angeles TimesRuben Santiago-Hudson, who adapted the play for the screen, honors Wilson’s eloquent and vernacular dialogue, which includes moments of wit. Caryn James, BBC.comTaking a play and turning it into a film has inherent challenges… The ability it shows to overcome that potential challenge makes it a superior work to the already well done Fences. Joey Magidson, Awards RadarWolfe and screenwriter Ruben Santiago-Hudson have put the play into the movie, rather than vice versa. Eric Kohn, IndieWire(Photo by David Lee/Netflix)Does it transcend its stage play origins?Ma Rainey feels fresh as a film. Fionnuala Halligan, Screen InternationalWhile you can feel the stage origins, over time, that stuff kind of dissipates when the performances are so good. Matt Goldberg, ColliderThere is a static quality to some of the back and forth, but… the contained staginess of the movie comes off as welcome, intimate and, in the hands of these boldly empathetic performers, quite thrilling. Oliver Jones, Observer[Santiago-Hudson] and Wolfe do what they can to open up the play but the movie still remains, in a good way, stagey. There’s no way around it. Roger Friedman, Showbiz 411The characters move through space as if they were blocked for the stage, and it s slightly distracting to watch. Gabriella Geisinger, Digital SpyWilson’s dialogue is very written sounding, very theatrical, and it almost feels like the entire ensemble are acting on a podium rather than attempting to deliver a legitimate feature film. Jordan Ruimy, World of ReelHow does the film look?Right away, it was hard not to notice how striking the imagery of this film is throughout. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentTobias Schilesser, who typically shoots action or showy movies alongside the likes of Peter Berg and Bill Condon, delivers a radiant cinematography. J. Don Birnam, Splash ReportTobias A. Schliesser’s vibrant cinematography works wonders in up close, but has a flatter quality in some of the interstitial moments between the big set pieces. Eric Kohn, IndieWire(Photo by David Lee/Netflix)Are there any criticisms?Despite being the titular character, Ma Rainey doesn’t feel like the protagonist, which is disappointing given that this film provides a rare look into Black American queer history. Flora Spencer Grant, Little White LiesThe film lacks a definitive center to ground its strengths… [It] gets so caught up in its busy dialogue-driven sequences that the purpose behind them can often feel quite thin. Matt Conway, Battle Royale With CheeseThe film sometimes fails to keep your attention, to keep you engaged in the act of watching. Gabriella Geisinger, Digital SpyDoes it feel timely?Even though Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is set over 90 years ago, it feels unsettlingly timely in the way that all historical films which deal with racism will until these issues are meaningfully addressed. Flora Spencer Grant, Little White LiesIt’s a story of Black lives and Black music in the early 20th century that has lost little of its significance in the 21st. Justin Chang, Los Angeles TimesNavigating an entertainment system that’s rigged against people of colour, ownership over one’s art, and knowing your worth are all things that Black artists still grapple with today. Amon Warmann, Empire Magazine(Photo by David Lee/Netflix)How is the ending?Wilson does not write happy plays, and this one ends on a note that sounds like the weary sigh on a sad trombone. Peter Debruge, VarietyIf you feel a sorrowful pit in your stomach at the conclusion of the proceedings, you will have Boseman’s characterization of Wilson’s heartbreaking character to thank for it. J. Don Birnam, Splash ReportThe climactic act of violence has been staged in oddly stilted terms, though the emotion resonates because of its wider context… [It’s] one of the great cinematic moments of the year.
