The film is based on a true story, and inspirational Christian movies never end sadly, so you can guess how everything turns out, but critics don t entirely seem to mind. They say the story is appropriately uplifting and the cast, which includes Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Topher Grace, and Dennis Haysbert, all put in strong work. It s all a little predictable, and it s not especially nuanced, but the right performances from a capable cast can do a lot to make up for some narrative and thematic shortcomings.
Over 50 years after Disney s Mary Poppins premiered in 1964, the magical nanny of Cherry Tree Lane is set to grace the big screen again, promising more musical numbers and whimsical adventure for the whole family. In retrospect, it s easy to see why Unbreakable was not the box office hit that many were expecting from M. Night Shyamalan in the year 2000. The director had the impossible task of following The Sixth Sense, the second biggest movie of 1999 (behind only The Phantom Menace); he was making a comic-book movie at a time when the genre was out of favor (thanks largely to the silliness of the late- 90s Batman movies); and the studio had marketed it, misleadingly, as a Sense-style thriller. And yet, it s also easy to see why Unbreakable would go on to find a devoted audience on DVD and eventually streaming, and why it would start to pop up in Best Superhero Movies lists in the late 2000s: It s really, really good – and well ahead of its time. The dark, grounded, and refreshing take on the superhero genre also benefited from some incredible performances from Bruce Willis (as train crash survivor and reluctant hero David Dunn) and Samuel L. Jackson (as Elijah Price, a.k.a. Mr. Glass, whose friendly fascination with Dunn belies more villainous intentions). It felt more reasonable that he would survive [a train accident] without a scratch, and so [it] could be dismissed as luck. But then Elijah s character comes to him and says, No, I think you might be a superhero. This idea of a regular person who doesn t have anything to do with superheroes in a world in which that doesn t exist is told: Hey, you know these fake things in comic books? Jackson: I was just finishing a job in Morocco and I had to go into Marrakesh. My wife was coming for few days, so we were gonna, I guess, take a holiday. I was in a casino, heard a voice – Bruce! – I turned around, we talked. He asked me what I was doing; I told him. I asked him where he d been, and he said, Oh I just finished this movie with this kid, and he s writing a movie for us right now. I was like, what movie was that, and he told me. I said, Oh, I read that movie. I wanted to be in it. He called Night on the phone, and Night says, Oh, I m writing one of your scenes right now. And we start talking, he tells me what the movie’s about. [I said] don t read it to me, I ll just read it when you send it.“It was really from Quentin that I grabbed that union of Sam and Bruce.”Shyamalan: One of my favorite movies is Pulp Fiction, and I really wanted that flavor that Sam and Bruce gave in Pulp Fiction for Unbreakable. Obviously, [it’s] a totally different story and all that stuff, but that kinda cool, edgy, grounded quality that they both had in that movie I thought [Willis’] quietness versus [Jackson’s] pizazz could be really fun. I m a huge comic book fan. I like the fact that he had this great arc. [He’s] not a weak character at all; he s just fragile, physically fragile. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to accept that they have something like that, carry on and have a strong belief that, If I m this person, there must be some person out there that s opposite me that can justify the fact that God made somebody like me. He had these things that were wrong with him that made him stronger. That s what you want you want a character that definitely knows what he s about. I talked to the costume director about the color scheme; we had great talks about the color scheme and the kind of materials he wanted to use. I kind of brought the hairstyle idea to him and Night accepted it, and then okay, let s build it and see what happens and to give Elijah things that were very distinct. It has a level of strength to it that his body didn t have. His body s so fragile, but he had this great mane of hair like a lion, very strong.Shyamalan: Sam brought that Frederick Douglas look to the table. The hair kinda parted and [created a] big silhouette that I love so much. He definitely brought the pizazz, which is what you expect from Sam.“Those guys were icons and I was being very aggressive about the way we were making the movie.”Shyamalan: I think I was 29 when I was doing Unbreakable. Or maybe even 28 when I wrote it. I was still in the early stages of my career, and those guys were icons… And I was being very aggressive about the way we were making the movie. Long takes. Three-minute takes, two-minute takes, four-minute takes – really aggressive filmmaking. And they just had to trust me. There s no close-ups. There s no this, there s no that. He had certain ways he wanted us to do things, and he would tell us to do them. I came up through the theater, and theater is essentially a dictatorship – the director tells you to do something, you do it, or they ask you a question, you have to have the right answer to justify what you re doing. Night went further than that. It was like, I already know what you re going to do, and I want you to do it this way. We were kind of like his puppets in an interesting kind of way. There were specific times he would say, “Okay, try not to blink. Just do the whole thing without blinking.” Or he would say, “Don t say the line that way, say it this way,” and I m one of those actors that hates being given line readings. But he was very adamant about it. Bruce and I have been around together for quite a bit, so… it was kind of easy for us to kind of listen to Night and look at each other and go, Yeah, wait till this kid finds out. “We re never gonna mention comic books, superheroes – any of that.”Shyamalan: I think for the studio at that time… it was seen as a fringe element of the movie – that this is about comic books. “Oh, those are those weirdos that hang out at those conventions.” Back then, there was just Comic-Con, and it was very niche at that time. People weren t aware of it. It was more cult-like. So, they said, Let s not make this a cult subject movie; let’s sell it more as a general thriller. We re never gonna mention comic books, superheroes – any of that. That meant you couldn t even [promote] the main plot of the movie because that s the plot of the movie: Hey, I think you re a real-life superhero. That couldn t be said in the ads. It was a really weird and ironic time that the thing that dominates the film industry now was the one thing they were running from. They thought that was the least commercial element of the film. But immediately as the DVD came out, you started to feel the change in their perception of the movie. And… Oh, wait, this is about comic books? And then again, six months later, six months later, six months later… it just kept growing and growing until I would cross the street and, if you and I were hanging out, invariably someone would come up to us and say: “Unbreakable! In the waning days of the winter season in March 2011, the Matthew McConaughey star vehicle The Lincoln Lawyer was released into theaters and opened with a credits sequence featuring a Lincoln Town Car traveling through the sun-drenched streets of Los Angeles. The end-of-winter release date and the bright LA streets kicked off a metaphorical heatwave for McConaughey’s career that led to blockbuster hits, R-rated gems, and a Best Actor Oscar at the 2014 Academy Awards.After stumbling a bit in the films Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Surfer Dude, McConaughey surprised viewers by fully inhabiting the role of Michael “Mickey” Haller, a Defense Attorney (who never gets car sick) whose office is a Lincoln Town Car driven by a former client named Earl (Laurence Mason). Adapted from the 2005 book by Michael Connelly, the R-rated film collected million worldwide on a million budget and was adored by critics and audiences who declared it guilty of being an excellent courtroom thriller. McConaughey is in nearly every second of the Brad Furman-directed film, and the fly-on-the-wall camerawork full of pans and zooms by cinematographer Lukas Ettlin follows him around the streets of LA as he works on a high-profile case involving a rich maniac named Louis Roulet (Ryan Phillippe).Later in 2011, the Richard Linklater-directed Bernie and William Freidkin-directed Killer Joe erased the bad taste of Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and catapulted Failure to Launch out of people’s memories, ushering in the “McConaissance.” McConaughey followed these up with The Paperboy, Mud, Magic Mike, Dallas Buyers Club (which won him the aforementioned Oscar), The Wolf of Wall Street, True Detective, and the 0 million-grossing worldwide blockbuster Interstellar. In other words, McConaughey was doing “alright, alright, alright,” as everything he touched turned to gold (well, except for Gold, which, after Fool’s Gold and Sahara, proved he should avoid treasure hunting).Here’s five reasons why The Lincoln Lawyer was the perfect film to put McConaughey on the expressway to the McConaissance.1. McConaughey Is an Excellent Movie Lawyer(Photo by ©Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection)While many consider McConaughey’s breakthrough performance in Dazed and Confused to be his launching pad, it was the 1996 film A Time to Kill that pushed his career into orbit. The John Grisham book adaptation featured McConaughey as a defense attorney for Carl Lee Hailey (Samuel L. Jackson), a man who murdered his daughter s rapists and injured a cop in the process. The film killed it at the box office, bringing in 2 million worldwide, and McConaughey was awarded the “Most Promising Actor” distinction from the Chicago Film Critics Association. A year later, McConaughey starred in Steven Spielberg s Amistad, which was based on the true story and 1987 book Mutiny on the Amistad: The Saga of a Slave Revolt and Its Impact on American Abolition, Law, and Diplomacy. McConaughey once again played an attorney, this time defending a group of Africans who took control of the slave ship bound for the Americas that they were imprisoned on. Both films were Fresh successes, and proved he could excel in courtroom dramas.After a decade of romantic comedies and Reign of Fire which is awesome, by the way; McConaughey is swallowed whole by a dragon The Lincoln Lawyer and Bernie saw his return to the courtroom and reminded everyone of his rakish charm and acting prowess. Mickey is in almost every frame of The Lincoln Lawyer, and you can tell McConaughey loves playing the character. Whether it’s his off-the-charts chemistry with Marisa Tomei or the way he sucks the life out of Ted Minton (Josh Lucas), the overmatched state’s attorney, McConaughey thrives in the slimy-yet-likable role. When Earl asks Mickey if he’ll still have a job after Mickey gets his license back (he lost it due to a DUI), Mickey says he’s already had it for three months; the two smile, say nothing, and continue on with their day. It’s at this exact moment you realize you actually kind of like Mickey, the divorced alcoholic attorney hated by so many because he’s so good. After 10 years, this scene still hits us every time.2. The Film Gave Him His Edge Back and Allowed Him to ResetIf you saw Dazed and Confused as a teenager, McConaughey’s character Wooderson may have come across like a mythical figure. In hindsight, though, it probably dawned on you that Wooderson is an older dude who kind of creeps on high school girls, and you probably wouldn’t want him hanging out with your children or their friends. That’s the magic of McConaughey: he can find the charm in people you’d probably want nothing to do with otherwise. While he certainly earned his share of fans in rom-coms like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and The Wedding Planner, many forget he got his start playing sleazy or mysterious figures in movies like Dazed and Confused, Lone Star, and Frailty.McConaughey is at his best in films like Killer Joe, Magic Mike, and The Gentleman, when he can embody a square-jawed menace. His speech about the laws of the jungle in The Gentlemen and every second of his Killer Joe screentime are laced with unpredictable anger and a “don’t come at me” vibe that had been lost in movies like Surfer, Dude. In The Lincoln Lawyer, he’s a bad dad and a terrible husband, and he s responsible for destroying an innocent man’s life (Michael Peña) after he refused to listen and fight for him. However, despite these glaring flaws, he’s still exceedingly likable, and he still possesses something of a moral compass. When Mickey visits Peña s character to confirm a suspicion, you see in the course of just a couple minutes that McConaughey is nervous, shaken, and desperate as he tries to right a prior wrong.Reviews for The Lincoln Lawyer use phrases like “very refreshing,” “never-better,” and “the only actor in Hollywood who can swagger while sitting down.” This performance hit the reset button for McConaughey, who admitted in an interview with Cigar Afficionado magazine (of course) that the so-called McConaissance was more a case of him saying “f*** the bucks” and taking roles that scared him after a decade of easy, lucrative rom-coms. While he enjoyed giving audiences “90-minute breezy romantic getaways,” he wanted to be an actor again, going as deep as you can in a role, and The Lincoln Lawyer marks the beginning of that journey.3. McConaughey Soars in R-Rated Films(Photo by Everett Collection)It’s also fitting that The Lincoln Lawyer marked Matthew McConaughey s comeback because the Tomatometer scores in his filmography reveal an interesting trend. His R-rated films boast a Fresh 60.2% average, whereas his PG-13 films sit at a Rotten 40.9% average. In other words, he has thrived in more adult-oriented fare, as 14 of his 15 best-reviewed films are rated R (Kubo and the Two Strings is the lone exception). McConaughey won his Oscar for the Dallas Buyers Club, and most recently, The Gentleman collected a 75% Tomatomometer and an 84% Audience Score en route to earning 5 million worldwide. Basically R = McC glory with the exception of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, Tiptoes, and Surfer, Dude, but even those three have cult followings of their own.Though it was a television program, the HBO crime drama True Detective sported a similar TV-MA rating, which is appropriate for a show that features brutal murder, copious profanity, and a sense of dread that weighs on you like a Lincoln Town Car. McConaughey’s performance in the first season of the series earned him Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for his turn as “Rust” Kohle, a Lone Star-swigging detective who goes through super dark times while hunting for a serial killer.Now, his PG-13 films have made much more money at the box office Interstellar (that crying scene…) and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days in particular were giant hits. But movies like Mud, Killer Joe (which actually received an NC-17 rating), and Magic Mike were low-budget marvels that found him hitting new gears and allowed him to work with people like Steven Soderbergh and Jeff Nichols. Yes, 2019 s famously panned Serenity is also rated R, but it’s insane, and we love that it exists — because it’s insane.What’s wild is that between 2003 and 2011, McConaughey s only Fresh film was Tropic Thunder, the R-rated comedy epic that saw him dueling with Tom Cruise and throwing TiVos in the air to stop deadly rockets. The role is a minor one, but Rick Peck, Hollywood Agent, is another cocky creation who is just as dedicated as Mickey Haller is to his clients.4. He s at His Best Playing Characters Whose Names Begin with M(Photo by ©STX Films, Jim Bridges/©Roadside Attractions, Saeed Adyani/©Lionsgate)Bear with us here: Between Mud, The Gentlemen, The Beach Bum, The Wolf of Wall Street, Frailty, and The Lincoln Lawyer, R-rated movies in which McConaughey s character s first or last name begins with an “M” have a 76.5% Tomatometer average. This is well above the 60.2% average of his R-rated films in general. During the McConaissance, five of his best films have him named Mud, Mickey, Moondog, Michael, and Mark. Is this mere coincidence, or is there some other cosmic force at work?Two of McConaughey’s most underrated performances are in The Beach Bum and Frailty (which isn’t part of the McConaissance, but it’s legit). In The Beach Bum, Harmony Korine’s follow-up to Spring Breakers, he returned to Florida and cast McConaughey as a pleasure-loving author who gets entangled in shenanigans that involve great white sharks, cannabis, and explosions. Moondog is a peculiar entity who feels like an alternate version of McConaughey himself from a different timeline. The film moves at a leisurely pace, and it s kept together by a dedicated McConaughey who knows he’s in a singular role of a lifetime. In Frailty, the Bill Paxton-directed horror film, McConaughey plays a guilt-ridden man named Adam/Fenton Meiks who believes he is on a mission from God to eliminate demons that walk among the living. He also tells excellent stories about past murders and family trauma, which he would do again in True Detective.5. The Film Boasts a Deep Bench of Supporting Characters(Photo by Saeed Adyani/©Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection)While The Lincoln Lawyer may feature McConaughey in every scene, it helps that he’s surrounded by a supporting cast that s deeper than the bench of the 2002-2003 San Antonio Spurs. It’s a treat watching John Leguizamo, Marissa Tomei, Josh Lucas, Laurence Mason, Michael Peña, William H. Macy, Shea Whigham, Frances Fisher, Ryan Phillipe, and Bryan Cranston act against McConaughey. It feels like their energy made him raise his game, and you can see it on the screen.His chemistry with Tomei s Maggie, Mickey s ex-wife, is palpable, and Michael Peña gives him pure gold to work with as an innocent man doomed to decades in prison. It also helps that Ryan Phillipe oozes menace and gives viewers a villain who desperately needs to be found guilty. The ensemble is instrumental to the success of the film; he’s surrounded by an embarrassment of riches, which makes the film infinitely rewatchable.That’s another reason why McConaughey has flourished in the decade since The Lincoln Lawyer s release: Between Interstellar, The Wolf of Wall Street, Mud, Dallas Buyers Club (Jared Leto also won an Oscar for this film), Bernie, and Magic Mike, he’s been surrounded by A-listers doing A+ work. It s part of the conscious decision he made back in 2011 to seek out challenging, rewarding material and work with talented individuals at the top of their game, and it reflects his newfound commitment to his craft. Would the McConaissance have still happened if he didn t choose to star in The Lincoln Lawyer? Maybe, probably, but thanks to a number of factors both obvious and esoteric there couldn t have been a more appropriate vehicle. King of the Crop: Glass Has Third-Best Holiday Weekend, But May Have A Ceiling(Photo by @ Universal Pictures)With an estimated take of million over the four-day MLK holiday, Glass just missed besting the .6 million that Ride Along made on the same weekend back in 2014. (American Sniper is still the highest grosser over this weekend with 7.2 million in 2015.) How does the Glass opening compare to the director s other hits? Shyamalan’s Signs opened to .1 million in 2002; The Village opened with .7 million two years later. The audience response to that film – a final gross just 2.25 times its opening – appeared to be the beginning of the decline for the filmmaker once dubbed “the next Spielberg.” Total grosses continued to fall with Lady in the Water (.2 million) and The Happening (.5 million). Big-budget bombs like The Last Airbender and After Earth came next, and it looked like it might be over the man friends call Night. Enter Blumhouse Productions.Working with smaller budgets seemed to give Shyamalan new life. After The Visit was a moderate hit, he had one of the biggest financial successes of his career with Split, which made almost 0 million globally and cost just million to make. Given anticipation for Glass, it felt certain it would beat Split s Friday-to-Sunday opening back in 2017, and it did, but only by 5,025 with Sunday totals boosted by the holiday. By all accounts Glass should become just the sixth true January opener ever to reach 0 million (the other 14 films to earn over 0 million from a January launch either began limited runs in December or were a special edition of Star Wars.) The film may still be able to pull a three-week run atop the box office, but those weekend-winning numbers could be in the low teens by then – and poor reviews won t help (the movie is at 36% on the Tomatometer). If Miss Bala somehow manages to beat it on February 1, it may be a sign that fans are starting to turn on the filmmaker again. If The Kid Who Would Be King can somehow get over million, it could be taken down this coming weekend.Fresh Surprise: Dragon Ball Has a Super Six Days(Photo by @ FUNimation/ courtesy Everett Collection)FUNimation is one of the premier distributors of anime on the home entertainment market, but it has had some notable theatrical releases over the past four years, like Shin Godzilla (85%) and Your Name (97%), which have caught the attention of critics as well. This week they can celebrate their biggest box office success to date: Dragon Ball Super: Broly opened on Wednesday with .04 million in just 1,440 theaters (including 180 IMAX venues). No only is that more than Unbreakable made on its opening Wednesday before Thanksgiving (.8 million), but only three films since 2000 have begun their run in 1,400-1,500 theaters and grossed over million. And they did it in a weekend. They were Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman (.9 million), Breach (.5 million), and Nurse Betty (.14 million). Broly added .7 million over the three-day weekend and an estimated .4 million over the holiday for a total of .9 million. FUNimation’s highest-grossing film before this weekend was Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F which made just over million total in 2015.The Rest of the Top 10 and Beyond: More Milestones Crossed for Aquaman and Bohemian Rhapsody(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures)Last week’s no. 1 film, The Upside, is turning into a real story for STX Films. With just a 26% drop this weekend, plus nothing on the hook besides its advertising and whatever was spent to pry it away from Harvey Weinstein, the film is headed towards being their second biggest success after Bad Moms.Aquaman passed the 0 million mark domestically this weekend but, more importantly, is now the 27th all-time earner worldwide and is poised to be the highest-grossing film based on a DC property ever when it passes The Dark Knight Rises. Over on the Marvel side, Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse has also crossed the 0 million line worldwide. It has also leapfrogged Mary Poppins Returns in domestic dollars, which also just crossed the global 0 million threshold. Bumblebee is besting both of them on that front with over 3 million, which is still 7 million less than Transformers: The Last Knight (though it still has a shot to beat that film’s domestic total).Finally, this week Bohemian Rhapsody will be passing two huge and unexpected milestones: The movie reached 0 million here at home this weekend and later this week it will hit 0 million worldwide. That makes it the seventh highest-grossing film of 2018 behind four comic book films and two sequels. (Photo by HBO)“The Long Night” will go down in television history as the Game of Thrones episode that made “Arya Stark” a verb.Episode 3 of season 8 started slow on Sunday night, opening as if from the backstage of a play, with all of the players grabbing their props and – “Places everyone!” – moving to their marks. It is called a theater of war, after all. The curtain raised on the first highlight of the night:1. Setting the Scene: The Frontlines(Photo by HBO)Taking their position as wight-fodder in this fight: the Unsullied led by Grey Worm, the Dothraki (including the tall one, Qhono, played by Staz Nair, in case you ever wondered), Podrick Payne, Brienne of Tarth, Jaime Lannister, Tormund Giantsbane, Ser Beric Dondarrion, The Hound, Gendry, Edd Tollett, Samwell Tarly, Ghost! (hereafter with an exclamation point), Ser Jorah Mormont.Meanwhile, Jon and Daenerys survey the scene from the distance with dragons Drogon and Rhaegal. Sansa, Arya, and Ser Davos are on the ramparts when a lone rider appears.2. Red Woman on a White Field(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Melisandre rides in out of nowhere and says, all casual, to Ser Jorah: “Do you speak their tongue? Tell them to lift their swords.”Speaking a spell/prayer in High Valyrian and grasping Quono’s arakh, she sets the Dothraki swords – all of them! – on fire. If only Ser Jorah had Heartsbane out at the time.She rides on, drops the mic in front of Grey Worm, and says: “Valar morghulis.” Grey Worm: “Valar dohaeris.” Enough said.The fact that Melisandre shows up isn’t as disturbing as what she says to Ser Davos: That he needn’t bother executing her, because she’d be dead before dawn.An aside: Watching the Dothraki flaming swords get extinguished in the dark is devastating with the final flames frantically slashing as they sputter. And that Ser Jorah and Ghost went with them is, in that moment, heartbreaking. Jorah and a few Dothraki horses and men return, but not Ghost.3. He Who Chose Edd in the Office Death-Watch Pool Wins(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Edd Tollet is the first named character to die on screen – maybe. It’s so dark, that I can’t tell wight from warrior. So many were slaughtered before Daenerys and Jon showed up with Drogon and Rhaegal and set fire to the field, we may have missed one.Brienne saves Jaime, Jaime saves Brienne, Edd saves Sam. Podrick, Gendry, The Hound – all slashing at a tsunami of undead.4. She-Bear in Charge(Photo by HBO)“Open the gate,” Lyanna Mormont screams as the live fighters retreat into Winterfell. Can’t help but think that Jorah was absolutely right: This is no place for Lyanna, the future of her house. Listen to your elders, girl. She later takes down the wight Giant with dragonglass to the eyeball when he attempts to snack on her, but dies in the process. If you were hoping she would be only mostly dead, you’d be disappointed later in the episode.5. You Had One Job, Daenerys(Photo by HBO)Sure, the Unsullied in perfect formation even in the midst of madness was an impressive sight to see, but they also look an awful lot like future wights for all their heroism. They back up against spikes in the trenches that are supposed to be set aflame. Daenerys doesn’t see the signal, flaming arrows from the ramparts keep going out before they can catch, and the wights keep taking out the runners with torches.Melisandre saves everyone’s asses (for the time being) by lighting the trench with her spell/prayer.6.
