as Fresh news. Warner Bros. has scheduled Space Jam 2 for July 16, 2021 (the week after Indiana Jones 5).5. REGINA KING TO DIRECT THEATRE ADAPTATION ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Actress Regina King  won an Academy Award earlier this year for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk, but to paraphrase the old saying, maybe what she really wanted to do next was direct. King is now signed to make her feature film directorial debut with an adaptation of the play One Night in Miami  The play s setting is the night of February 25th, 1964, when the young boxer Cassius Clay (A.K.A. Mohammad Ali) celebrated his win over Sonny Liston at a motel where he was joined by three other icons of the 1960s: civil rights leader Malcolm X, soul singer Sam Cooke, and Cleveland Browns star player Jim Brown. It should be interesting to see whom Regina King will cast as her four leads. Will Smith starred in Ali, and Denzel Washington starred in Malcolm X, but the long-planned Sam Cooke biopic is still in development.6. NETFLIX BETS BIG ON STAR-DRIVEN THRILLERS RED NOTICE AND KATE (Photo by Frank Masi/Columbia Pictures, Jack English/Summit Entertainment, Clay Enos/Warner Bros.)There was a story this week that reported Netflix may start being more budget conscious about their film and TV projects. That may be, in a big-picture sort of way, but it also came in the same week that news broke about two star-driven Netflix thrillers. Red Notice is the title of a heist thriller that Universal Pictures had previously scheduled for November 13, 2020, with both Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot attached to star. Reportedly, Universal had reservations after the screenplay was turned in, and so the project was picked up by Netflix instead, with Johnson and Gadot now to be joined by Ryan Reynolds. Woody Harrelson also signed on this week to co-star in the assassin thriller Kate, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane). Red Notice will be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who earned Rotten scores for We re the Miller and Skyscraper, while Kate will be directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who made his debut with The Huntsman: Winter s War (Rotten at 18%). Neither of the directors inspires much confidence, but we can t deny those casts are impressive.7. UNIVERSAL CASTS ITS INVISIBLE MAN (Photo by Steve Dietl/Netflix)Back when Universal Pictures had ambitious plans for a Dark Universe of reboots of their classic monsters, Johnny Depp had been expected to star in The Invisible Man, but those plans were dropped after the box office disappointment that was 2017 s The Mummy. For a while, there was some confusion over whether or not the movie might be called The Invisible Woman, because Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid s Tale, The West Wing) was described as the film s star. The confusion was cleared up slightly this week as Blumhouse and Universal has cast relative newcomer Oliver Jackson-Cohen (of Netflix s The Haunting of Hill House) as the title character in The Invisible Man. Univesal has scheduled The Invisible Man for March 13, 2020, up against another monster movie, Godzilla vs Kong. One of the other co-stars in The Invisible Man will be 16-year-old Storm Reid (12 Years a Slave, A Wrinkle in Time), who this week also joined The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021) as the daughter of Idris Elba s character.Rotten Idea2. MOMO INTERNET HOAX TO GET ITS OWN MOVIE(Photo by DOUGBERRY/Getty Images)It seems longer ago than 2018, but last year, stories started appearing online about the Momo Challenge, which reportedly encouraged children and teeangers to put themselves in dangerous or injurious situations. The character called Momo was actually a Japanese sculpture called Mother Bird (but really, it most resembles Geena Davis in some scenes from Beetlejuice). Orion Pictures (of the recent Child s Play reboot) is now teaming up with producer Roy Lee (IT, The Ring) to develop a horror film based on the Momo challenge. The decision to adapt an Internet meme seems similar to Sony PIctures choice last year to release a film based on Slender Man, which ended up earning a very low Rotten score at just 7%.1. LOOK WHO S REMAKING LOOK WHO S TALKING(Photo by TriStar Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Amy Heckerling s 1989 comedy Look Who s Talking (Rotten at 59%) was followed in 1990 by Look Who s Talking Too (Rotten at 14%), and in 1993 by Look Who s Talking Now  (Rotten at 0%). John Travolta and Kirstie Alley starred in those movies about talking babies and, in the third movie, talking dogs. Despite those critical drubbings, Sony Pictures is now developing a Look Who s Talking reboot to be written and directed by Jeremy Garelick, whose 2015 comedy The Wedding Ringer earned a Rotten score at 27%. It s not yet known if Bruce Willis or any of the other voice actors might return for the reboot (but probably not).Like this? 5.86.1 0月喜迎In this week s episode of What If ?, What If Thor Was An Only Child? , a very merry-sounding Thor is making new friends. The above exclusive clip from Wednesday s episode shows the Crown Prince of Asgard offering libations, crudités, or baked goods to a woman he s just met – Dr. Jane Foster, of Earth. Just moments before, he s surrounded by a group of Skrulls who amuse the Asgardian royal by shape-shifting into him, one at a time.We also get a cutaway to the Grandmaster enjoying a bite of cake.As with other episodes in this season of What If ?, Marvel s Twilight Zone-like look at what might have become of certain MCU characters and plot points had things gone differently, the voices for the characters are all supplied by the actors who play them on the big screen: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Rachel House, and Jeff Goldblum all star in the episode.Aside form this snippet, little is known about the episode – or whether it will keep up the series hot streak: What If ? is currently Certified Fresh at 93% on the Tomatometer. What If Thor Was An Only Child? , What If ? is available on Disney+ from Wednesday September 22, 2021. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.
The holiday movie season typically kicks off in earnest during the first full weekend of November  Thor: Ragnarok, The Incredibles, and SPECTRE are just are a few of the blockbuster titles that have drawn audience interest and given the industry a late-year boost. This year s season so far has hardly lived up to even the lowest expectations, with Terminator: Dark Fate and Doctor Sleep suffering lackluster openings. The good news is that there are still many days left in the season, with both mini- and extended vacations coming for kids and their families. So let s look at 10 films that will hopefully rise towards or even exceed what everyone expects from them this season.10. Richard Jewell (2019) 77%Release Date: December 13Estimated Gross: -75 millionClint Eastwood managed to complete Richard Jewell  his 12th film as director being released in December quickly for Warner Bros., getting another one in the can just in time for awards season. That strategy didn t quite work out for him last year with The Mule, which nevertheless grossed over 3 million, an impressive 5.92 multiple over just a .5 million opening weekend. Similarly, Million Dollar Baby and Gran Torino opened in limited release but went on to gross 0.4 and 8 million, respectively. Even the return of Dirty Harry in Sudden Impact back in 1983 grossed about 4 million in today’s dollars. The commonality among all of those films is that Eastwood also starred in them. With the exception of American Sniper (his highest-grossing film to date), Eastwood in front of the camera is a bigger box office draw than when he s only behind it (Invictus grossed just .4 million), but the story of Richard Jewell (played by the great Paul Walter Hauser of I, Tonya and BlacKkKlansman) is a fascinating American tale that could resonate with domestic audiences. The trailer has raised some eyebrows about how far this film will lean into a poor white man being destroyed by actual fake news and, like Bombshell, the film could be hampered by audiences who prefer to keep their evenings free of politics. But critics have not been Rotten on Eastwood’s December oeuvre since 1990’s The Rookie, and that could translate into big box office dollars.9. Spies in Disguise (2019) 77%Release Date: December 25Estimated Gross: -85 millionSpider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse grossed over 0 million in 2018, and two years earlier, Illumination’s Sing made over 0 million, but those are the only two animated films since The Prince of Egypt in 1998 to gross over 0 million after opening in December. (That does not include hybrids like Alvin and the Chipmunks, Stuart Little, and Yogi Bear.) Spies in Disguise, with voice work by Will Smith and Tom Holland, has already been delayed three times this year from January to April, then to September, and now to Christmas Day. But even Fox’s animated talking bull, Ferdinand, managed to gross million back in 2017, despite opening on the same day as The Last Jedi and less than a week before Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Likewise, this release appears headed in a familiar direction.8. Ford v Ferrari (2019) 92%Release Date: November 15Estimated Gross: -105 millionMany critics have been referring to this as “your dad’s new favorite movie,” which feels apropos, even with Sam Mendes’ war epic, 1917, hoping to make a technical splash later this season. While that film is likely to earn some accolades, it will also probably get lost in a host of awards hopefuls – not to mention late-season blockbusters – so Ford v Ferrari is poised to make the most of its pole position. James Mangold’s two-and-a-half-hour racing film with Christian Bale and Matt Damon should get off to a strong start nearly two full weeks before Thanksgiving and cruise into mid-December as a staple of the top five at the box office until the big blockbusters take over.7. Little Women (2019) 95%Release Date: December 25Estimated Gross: 0-110 millionGreta Gerwig’s solo directorial debut, Lady Bird, is the highest-grossing film in independent production company A24’s history, making over million in 2017 and thriving into the heart of awards season that year. For her follow-up, Gerwig is taking on a literary classic with a major cast that includes Saoirse Ronan, Meryl Streep, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, and Florence Pugh. Strong reactions have come out of early screenings, suggesting Gerwig is offering a fresh perspective on the material, which has already seen seven other big screen adaptations. If A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is the film for adults that takes us from Thanksgiving to Christmas, then this film is likely to take the baton in a sprint to the Academy Awards.6. Cats (2019) 20%Release Date: December 20Estimated Gross: 0-120 millionSince 2002, there have been seven musicals that have opened in December and grossed over 0 million. The genre is on a three-year streak with La La Land (2016, 1.1 million), The Greatest Showman (2017, 4.3 million), and Mary Poppins Returns (2018, 1.9 million). On the other hand, if your name is Andrew Lloyd Webber, the big screen adaptations of your musicals have not been nearly as successful. Evita didn t do too bad in 1996, despite never making it into more than 1,045 theaters ( million), but Joel Schumacher’s The Phantom of the Opera was a big financial and awards disappointment for Warner Bros. in 2004 (.2 million). Can Cats overcome the social media sneers of its trailers to be another winner for Tom Hooper, whose Les Miserables grossed over 8 million in December 2012?5. Knives Out (2019) 97%Release Date: November 27Estimated Gross: 5-125 millionRian Johnson’s affinity for old-school whodunits and twisty narratives (see: Brick and The Brothers Bloom) is finally going to get the audience attention it deserves. Kenneth Branagh’s 2017 adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express built steady success to the tune of over 2 million, so why not give those same mystery-lovers another big cast in a funnier and more lively tale? Among all the films getting released wide this season that made their way through the fall festival circuit, Knives Out currently maintains the highest Tomatometer score, Certified Fresh at 98%. (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood comes in second at 97%.) Word of mouth should be strong and brisk for the PG-13 film, and it should become another solid hit for Johnson and Lionsgate.4. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) 95%Release Date: November 22Estimated Gross: 5-135 millionThere are a number of options for families this season, but there is one film that is going to strike a chord with multiple generations. Take a childhood television icon, then cast him with the most beloved actor in Hollywood, and you have the recipe for a genuine success. Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers is the perfect anecdote to the anxiety and division that seems to be at the forefront of daily life now. Last year’s Won’t You Be My Neighbor? grossed .8 million, making it the ninth highest grossing documentary ever (and four of the films ahead of it are bubblegum pop behind-the-scenes concert movies) and renewing interest in the American television hero. As Hanks heads toward possibly taking the lead in the Best Supporting Actor race, Marielle Heller’s film is likely to be the one adults will recommend at Thanksgiving and for weeks to come.3. Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) 71%Release Date: December 13Estimated Gross: 5-350 millionSpeaking of long waits, it took 22 years for a Jumanji sequel to hit theaters. (No offense to Jon Favreau’s Zathura.) The original with Robin Williams just crossed the 0 million mark and was the tenth highest-grossing film of 1995. The sequel with Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan opened five days after The Last Jedi and became the fourth film on a list of 0 million grossers with a five-time multiple over their opening (in fact, it s the second-highest behind Titanic). Sony is going to get the jump on Star Wars this time by opening The Next Level a week before The Rise of Skywalker, just as the holiday hiatus begins for most schools. There will be a number of options going forward, and this looks like it may follow a more traditional sequel pattern: it won t reach the heights of the original but should still reveal a healthy anticipation for another adventure.2. Frozen II (2019) 78%Release Date: November 22Estimated Gross: 0+ millionThat sound you hear is every child in the world asking their parents to take them to see Anna and Elsa s next adventure. 2013 s Frozen was a legitimate phenomenon, even by Disney standards: to date, it is just one of five films to gross over 0 million that achieved that mark by grossing more than five times their opening weekends. It s a list that includes Avatar, Titanic, The Phantom Menace, and, as previously mentioned, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Think of the films that succeeded because of word-of-mouth while they were in theaters, and then only grew from there to the point that audiences were ready to jump into the next chapter event films like Terminator 2 and The Dark Knight, as well as comedies like Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Pitch Perfect 2. The Toy Story films and last year’s 14-years-in-the-making Incredibles 2 are likely to be comparable to what is in store for Frozen II.1. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) 52%Release Date: December 20Estimated Gross: 0-800 millionThere are definitely a couple of event films closing out 2019, and J.J. Abrams conclusion of the Star Wars saga that began back in 1977 is, without argument, the biggest. Abrams’ The Force Awakens, despite a push from Avengers: Endgame this summer, remains the highest-grossing domestic film of all time. Will The Rise of Skywalker give Endgame a run for its money? We think it s likely to come up a little short to match the latter s record-breaking 7 million opening, though you should also ignore the trolls suggesting it will gross less than The Last Jedi (a.k.a. the eighth highest-grossing domestic film ever). Each Star Wars trilogy has adapted to a pattern: a big first movie, then a second film that grosses less, and then a strong finish, with the third film out-grossing the second but not quite the first. Expect The Rise of Skywalker to fall into that trend.

City of God is kinetic and visceral. The active camerawork is gorgeous. City of God really did try to find those moments where we can pause and view these characters without any judgment. No character in City of God is black-and-white. There are moments when, even though we know some of these dudes are ruthless killers, they show us little hints that showcase their youth and make it clear to us that they re still 16-, 17-, 18-years-old at the end of the day. One scene in particular I remember is Li l Zé. He was this ruthless overlord, but he gets turned down at that dance party. And you just see his face where he s smiling at first, and then you just see the embarrassment wash over him. Oh my God! Literally everyone in the world knows that moment; everyone in the world knows what it s like to get rejected. But considering that we ve seen this man brutally kill people at this point, I think it s so interesting how the filmmaker also never intended for you to judge those characters. But he also never wanted to give a romanticized view of their life. He wanted you to fully understand how difficult and horrifying some of those realities can be. City of God is a masterpiece.Really quick though, I also want to take the time, and give a special mention to Ava DuVernay s work. Ava makes the most culturally important work of our time as a filmmaker. 13th is what taught the entire world that we re essentially living in a re-engineered version of slavery. Ava is committed to promoting awareness. Outside of her being an extraordinarily talented filmmaker, she makes incredibly formative and culturally impactful work. I just want to shout her out as well.
Earlier this year, the pop culture frenzy that is San Diego Comic-Con opted to go entirely free and entirely online, re-christening itself as Comic-Con@Home and offering fans a Zoom-ified version of what they might normally see at the annual event. Not to be outdone, DC Entertainment is offering a unique streaming experience unlike anything they ve done before also free, and also entirely online called DC FanDome.Initially conceived and promoted as a single 24-hour event, DC FanDome has expanded to accommodate fans who won t be able to see everything they want to see (you can read more about that here). But the main event will happen on Saturday, August 22, when viewers can tune in to the Hall of Heroes, which will cover most of DC Entertainment s tentpole properties, from their big-budget film franchises and a couple of their TV series to video games, comic books, and more. There will be a lot to take in, so if your time is limited, or you just don t want to sit around waiting for the next cool thing to happen, here are the 10 Hall of Heroes panels you probably won t want to miss.Wonder Woman 1984When: 10:00 am (PT)Length: 25 minutesDC FanDome will kick off with a bang with this panel dedicated to the highly anticipated follow-up to 2017 s Wonder Woman. Director Patty Jenkins and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, and Pedro Pascal will be on hand to answer fan questions and share a new sneak peek at the film. The panel description also promises a few more surprises, so you might want to make sure you catch it in case something big drops.Introducing Flash (Film)(Photo by Clay Enos/©Warner Bros. Pictures)When: 11:40 am (PT)Length: 10 minutesThe Flash standalone movie has been batted around in development since 2013, and we aren t officially getting that movie until 2022, but the fact that producer-director Andy Muschietti (It, It Chapter Two), his wife and producing partner Barbara Muschietti, screenwriter Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey), and star Ezra Miller are all showing up for this brief, 10-minute panel indicates they ll have some important things to say and possibly show, if Andy Muschietti s brief appearance in the trailer above is any indication about the upcoming film. The Suicide Squad(Photo by DC Entertainment)When: 11:55 pm (PT)Length: 30 minutesWriter-director James Gunn has been talking up his FanDome panel quite a bit, leading up to the event, and you know if he s excited, it s proba
虽然游戏官方为了打击工作室做了一系列改版和革新,打金的收益逐渐减少,不过依然有利可图,并且非常稳定,是个值得长期做下去的手游项目。

168亚洲体育官方网站 After what feels like 18 months of anticipation and suspense, The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” concluded the only way it could on Tuesday night on DC s Legends of Tomorrow. Taking its inspiration from the 1985 DC Comics maxiseries, a certain change to the status quo was inevitable. But as the producers of the various programs explained to Rotten Tomatoes, this change was always the plan and key to the Arrowverse s growth moving forward. The new format may not be a surprise to readers of the original Crisis on Infinite Earths comics, but the choice to pull the trigger and do it on television — to say nothing of its implications for other DC Entertainment media — is unexpected. Well, perhaps not as unexpected as Crisis writer Marv Wolfman s cameo, of course. Nevertheless, the change means the individual Arrowverse shows will look different when they begin to return next week, so take a tour with us as we investigate this new world and what the Arrowverse will look like in 2020.Earth-Prime Debuts(Photo by Colin Bentley/The CW)As revealed on Tuesday night, the universe was reborn. In its wake is Earth-Prime, an amalgam world in which the CW heroes all co-exist.“We knew from last year that we were going to merge [the worlds] and create Earth-CW, basically,” executive producer Marc Guggenhim said of the “Crisis” conclusion. In choosing a name for this new existence, Guggenheim and the other showrunners latched on to Earth-Prime, which in the DC Comics tradition is the Earth where we, the readers of DC Comics, are said to exist.Of course, Earth-Prime became a fictional world when a Superboy appeared on it shortly before the original Crisis series. And it only gets more messy as subsequent writers returned to the idea and its “Superboy Prime.” But for Guggenheim, the name was the right fit for their new reality. “I just personally liked the sound of Earth-Prime. So all the CW shows [are there],” he said.“[But] Riverdale’s not there,” Batwoman executive producer Caroline Dries interjected.“That would be very weird,” DC’s Legends of Tomorrow co-showrunner Keto Shimizu added.“The CW superhero shows,” Guggenheim clarified.Though now united on one Earth, Guggenheim was quick to point out this new Earth is not the Earth-1 of Arrow, The Flash or Legends. “It s a completely different Earth,” he explained. What that means in the long-term will be revealed as the individual shows move forward. For The Flash and Legends, Earth-Prime s resemblance to Earth-1 means various quirks may continue to appear for seasons to come, like Nash (Tom Cavanagh) being a distinct entity from Harrison Wells. But for Supergirl and Black Lightning, both of which inhabited worlds of their own, Earth-Prime will be major changes to their status quos.Supergirl Welcomes Back an Old Friend(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Supergirl co-showrunner Robert Rovener teased the Crisis was a huge event, and impacts everything going on in the show. This is certainly the case from the brief glimpses of the Earth-Prime National City in the final Crisis episode. Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer) is a beloved humanitarian who owns the DEO. He is also Supergirl s chief supporter, or so we re told. How this will actually play out is anyone s guess, but we assume the Lex s presence may alter Kara s (Melissa Benoist) problems with Lena (Katie McGrath) and Leviathan considerably. But even as these concerns simmer, the show s technological bent will continue with Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) returning from the 31st century. Hopefully, the 31st century of the Legion of Superheroes is a brighter place thanks to Winn s time there. Maybe he can bring some of that positivity back to the 21st century.Black Lightning’s World ExpandsThough Black Lightning s creative team was unavailable for comment on the Earth-Prime status quo, stars Christine Adams and Marvin “Krondon” Jones III offered a few glimpses into their post- Crisis reality.“We are exposed to [the] other universes. It s going to become bigger in Freeland,” Jones said. But even with new worlds opened to them — and Jefferson (Cress Williams) obtaining a seat at the Hall of Justice — the situation in Freeland may leave them walled in for some time yet. Of course, Jefferson s new membership in the superhero community may leave viewers to wonder why Barry (Grant Gustin) and Kara are not rushing to his aid. In our reality, it comes down to the fact Black Lightning is shot in Atlanta while the rest of the shows are produced in Vancouver, but Earth-Prime will need to find a good answer for the series standing apart from its Arrowverse siblings. As Adams put it, “In a world that was kind of real before and set in a real place versus this crossover world, how are we going to marry those two things?”Of course, moving Black Lightning and its situation to Earth-Prime means the Markovians will be dealing with more superheroes beyond the Pierce family. Maybe Jefferson can finally form the Outsiders.Batwoman Has an Identity CrisisSince Earth-Prime resembles Earth-1, Dries said the biggest Crisis shock wave Kate (Ruby Rose) faces will stem from that broken Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy) she encountered in Part 2.“She just looked at her future in the mirror, and is like, ‘Is this who I m going to become?’ Dries said of the crossover s lasting emotional impact. That worry will also seed the continuing friendship between Kate and Kara — a World s Finest pairing already glimpsed in “Crisis” itself and further cemented by Kate s presence alongside the Danvers sisters in the story s final minutes. As for Alice (Rachel Skarsten) and the other characters?“It s a little tricky, because our characters aren t yet exposed to this notion of multiple universes, and superheroes with powers and stuff,” Dries said.DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Has Trust IssuesFor Shimizu, the challenge in constructing Legends fifth year was more about writing a thematic sequel to “Crisis” before it was completely written: “It was very tricky for us.” Nonetheless, “Crisis” sets up a few ideas for Sara Lance (The CW) going forward even as the show prepares to say goodbye to Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) and Nora Darkh (Courtney Ford).“ Crisis hits [Sara] pretty hard,” Shimizu said. “[But] in a good way.”It s easy to think Oliver s insistence on the heroes building trust will be part of Sara s story going forward. With Constantine (Matt Ryan), Mick (Dominic Purcell), Nora, and Charlie (Maisie Richardson-Sellars) always ready to choose the morally-gray option, establishing trust is definitely a good thing — even if its just trusting Mick to rob a place blind. And as Crisis seemingly left Sara as the overall leader of the superhero community, it is possible the new season of Legends will focus on her becoming comfortable with the idea. Also, there s that issue about Behrad (Shayan Sobhian) replacing Zari (Tala Ashe) as a Legend. That will no doubt be a runner as the Legends attempt to return history s greatest monsters back into Hell. The Flash Has Miles To Go Before Baby Nora West-Allen ArrivesAccording to Guggenheim, one of Barry s choices in Crisis — we presume it was his insistence on getting into the Speed Force — will reverberate throughout the rest of The Flash s sixth season. Previously, Flash showrunner Eric Wallace told us the post- Crisis storyline will focus on a new antagonist — quite possible the shadowy arms operation Barry and Ralph (Hartley Sawyer) investigated in episode 6 of the season – while Ralph will finally meet Sue Dearbon, to be played by Natalie Dreyfuss. Sue s such a delight, Wallace told us back in October. But do not expect any of season 6 s stories to lead in the direction of Nora West-Allen s birth. Not this season, Wallace said. But that doesn t mean a huge hint to Nora isn t coming. And, as it happens, some of Iris West s experiences during the Bronze Age of comics may become fodder for the show. We do need Iris emotionally to get to this place, he teased. Now, that storyline supports that. And considering Nash s role in the final part of Crisis, we imagine he will be atoning for his misdeeds and finding a new life for himself on this new Earth-Prime.Arrow Makes Way for Green Arrow the CanariesArrow comes to its end later this month. Next week’s episode will be a backdoor pilot for Green Arrow the Canaries – starring Katherine McNamara, Juliana Harkavy, and Katie Cassidy – while the episode after that will be the series finale. Guggenheim and showrunner Beth Schwartz declined to speak about the conclusion, but it will feature Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity Smoak. For those with quick memories, Felicity was last seen in 2040, telling the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) she was ready to be reunited with Oliver. Does he still live on some other plane of existence or will she also reach for the peace Oliver accepted at end of Crisis? Superman and Lois Series Takes Off(Photo by Katie Yu/The CW)Though not discussed by the showrunners when we spoke to them about “Crisis,” Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois’s (Elizabeth Tulloch) survival leads into their own series, Superman and Lois. The program will debut in the 2020-2021 broadcast season and see the two adjusting to life as working parents. Lois reference to the boys suggests Clark will have to deal with more than baby Jonathan when he gets home. Presumably, the series will age him to a tween or teenage while the second child takes his place as an infant. Anything is possible — just look at the way Sara Diggle was restored and made a little older than J.J.Stargirl Rises(Photo by DC Universe)And as revealed in the Crisis conclusion, Stargirl (which will stream on DC Universe and air on The CW the next day) will take place on a newly reformed Earth-2. It makes total sense as Stargirl (Brec Bassinger) has strong ties to the Justice Society of America — a team traditionally placed on Earth-2 in the comics.Meanwhile, it was also nice to see Titans recognized as the show of Earth-9, Doom Patrol as happening on Earth-21, and Swamp Thing taking place on Earth-19. Since most of the DC Universe shows are also produced by Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti, giving them a place in the Multiverse was one of the miniseries greatest surprises. The Multiverse Is RebornAs for the Multiverse, it has been born anew with Earth-Prime as its new anchor. While the original Crisis comic book condensed all realities into one new Earth, the producers of the television Crisis saw the value in keeping the concept around around. Now, the DC Universe streaming series, theatrical films, and upcoming shows like HBO Max s Green Lantern all exist within a framework very close to the CW s reality. And as Ezra Miller s absolutely shocking appearance in Crisis confirms, the Arrowverse is a place where anything can happen and just about any DC Comics character can appear. It is, oddly enough, the best of all possibilities and an inadvertent fix to DC Entertainment s wild and sometimes contradictory array of content — they are all true in the infinitude. At least until the next crisis. But at least there will be a group of Superfriends to defend reality against it.

The Sundance Film Festival is a place for aspiring filmmakers to learn their craft, fresh-faced directors to make their feature debuts, and returning storytellers to share their latest creations. Some are longtime alums like Heidi Ewing, who’s back with her fourth and fifth projects to play in Park City, I Carry You With Me and Love Fraud. Others, like Bao Nguyen, have premiered previous movies at other festivals, but his latest work, the Bruce Lee documentary Be Water, is the first time they’ve brought a film to Sundance. Whether it’s their second feature or fifth entry to the festival, here’s a sampling of some of the returning filmmakers whose latest movies we can’t wait to catch. If you’re looking for more directors to watch, check out our list of potential breakout hits, like Dee Rees’ The Last Thing He Wanted, Justin Simien’s Bad Hair, Lana Wilson’s Miss Americana and Nat Faxon and Jim Rash’s Downhill.Dick Johnson Is Dead (2020) 100%(Photo by John Wakayama Carey courtesy of Sundance Institute)Director: Kirsten JohnsonSynopsis: With this inventive portrait, a cameraperson seeks a way to keep her 86-year-old father alive forever. Utilizing moviemaking magic and her family’s dark humor, she celebrates Dr. Dick Johnson’s last years by staging fantasies of death and beyond. Together, they confront the great inevitability awaiting us all.Why We re Excited: Kirsten Johnson has worked behind the camera on many famous documentaries like Citizenfour, The Invisible War, The Oath, and Pray the Devil Back to Hell. In her feature film debut, Cameraperson, she turned the lens on her life, sharing personal moments that were just outside the frame and rare outtakes from some of the many projects she’s worked on over her career. Now the inventive documentarian focuses on her father and the subject of death and memory. You’ll probably want to bring tissues with you to this screening. The Nest (2020) 89%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Director: Sean DurkinWriter: Sean DurkinCast: Jude Law, Carrie Coon, Charlie Shotwell, Oona RocheSynopsis: Charismatic entrepreneur Rory relocates his family to England with dreams of profiting from booming 1980s London. But as his wife, Allison, struggles to adapt and the promise of a lucrative new beginning starts to unravel, the couple have to face the unwelcome truths lying beneath the surface of their marriage. Why We re Excited: It’s been around nine years since Durkin broke out of the indie film scene with the drama Martha Marcy May Marlene – a film that also helped launch Elizabeth Olsen to Avengers-level fame. Durkin went on to win the U.S. Dramatic Directing Award at Sundance that year, and the film made it to Cannes that summer. After an award-winning turn in TV for Southcliffe, Durkin returns to Sundance with his long-awaited follow-up.Kajillionaire (2020) 90%(Photo by Matt Kennedy courtesy of Sundance Institute)Director: Miranda JulyWriter: Miranda JulyCast: Evan Rachel Wood, Gina Rodriguez, Richard Jenkins, Debra WingerSynopsis: Low-stakes grifter Old Dolio and her parents invite a chipper young woman into their insular clan, only to have their entire world turned upside down. Why We re Excited: A true polymath, Miranda July’s work extends beyond the film world. She’s written books and short stories and made art for the Venice Biennial. Her earlier movies like Me and You and Everyone We Know (which won a Special Jury Prize for Originality of Vision in the Sundance U.S. Dramatic category) and The Future have shown audiences her outside-the-box visual style and approach to narrative structure. With a quirky tale of self-discovery and a cast led by Evan Rachel Wood and Gina Rodriguez, Kajillionaire will be like few other films at Sundance. The Dissident (2020) 96%(Photo by Jake Swantko courtesy of Sundance Institute)Director: Bryan FogelSynopsis: When Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi disappears after entering Saudi Arabia’s consulate in Istanbul, his fiancée and dissidents around the world are left to piece together the clues to a brutal murder and expose a global cover-up perpetrated by the very country he loved. Why We re Excited: Bryan Fogel’s previous documentary film, Icarus, took a deep dive into the Russian doping scandal that rocked the Olympics. It went on to win the Special Jury Prize at Sundance and, ultimately, the 2017 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. Now, his latest documentary will take on the painful story of what happened to Jamal Khashoggi through access to Turkish government’s files; Khashoggi’s fiancée, Hatice Cengiz; and Khashoggi’s close friend, Omar Abdulaziz.Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado (2020) 100%(Photo by Giovan Cordero courtesy of Sundance Institute)Directors: Cristina Constantini, Kareem TabschSynopsis: Once the world’s most famous astrologer, Walter Mercado seeks to resurrect a forgotten legacy. Raised in the sugarcane fields of Puerto Rico, Walter grew up to become a gender nonconforming, cape-wearing psychic whose televised horoscopes reached 120 million viewers a day for decades before he mysteriously disappeared. Why We re Excited: If you grew up watching Walter Mercado on TV, you’re probably already curious about this documentary – and there are many archival treats in store for fans. Even if you have no idea who the popular astrologist was, Costantini and Tabsch’s documentary also explains Mercado’s widespread influence and enduring appeal in the Latinx community. Costantini’s previous documentary, Science Fair, was an audience favorite back at Sundance ‘18 and Tabsch dug into another chapter in Miami history with The Last Resort.Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets (2020) 93%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Directors: Bill Ross, Turner RossSynopsis: In the shadows of the bright lights of Las Vegas, it’s last call for a beloved dive bar known as the Roaring 20s. A document of real people in an unreal situation facing an uncertain future: America at the end of 2016.Why We re Excited: Like a documentary version of the Safdie brothers, the Ross brothers make an impressive filmmaking team with an immersive, free-wheeling visual style. In their highly observational works, the Ross brothers capture different slices of the U.S. not often seen on the big screen in movies like Tchoupitoulas, Western, and Contemporary Color. Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets sounds like it’ll fit right in with their previous studies. The Glorias (2020) 67%(Photo by Daniel McFadden courtesy of Sundance Institute)Director: Julie TaymorWriters: Julie Taymor, Sarah RuhlCast: Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Bette Midler, Janelle Monáe, Timothy Hutton, Lorraine ToussaintSynopsis: An equal-rights crusader, journalist, and activist — Gloria Steinem embodies these and more. From her role in the revolutionary women’s rights movement to her travels throughout the U.S. and around the world, Steinem has made an everlasting mark on modern history. A nontraditional chronicle of a trailblazing life. Why We re Excited: As the director behind Oedipus Rex, Frida, and Across the Universe, Julie Taymor’s adaptation of Gloria Steinem’s life story won’t be your typical biopic. Spanning across five different stages of Steinem’s life – and five different actresses in the lead role – Taymor follows the route carved by the trailblazing activist detailed in her memoir My Life on the Road and makes it her own journey with the help of a star-studded cast.Welcome to Chechnya (2020) 100%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Director: David FranceSynopsis: This searing investigative work shadows a group of activists risking unimaginable peril to confront the ongoing anti-LGBTQ+ pogrom raging in the repressive and closed Russian republic. Unfettered access and a remarkable approach to protecting anonymity exposes this underreported atrocity — and an extraordinary group of people confronting evil. Why We re Excited: David France’s previous documentaries – The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson and How to Survive a Plague – are archive footage- and interview-heavy works that try to place the viewers in the not-so-distant history of the LGBTQ rights movement. Now, his camera focuses on the current struggle of queer activists fighting for their rights in the face of homophobia.Lost Girls (2020) 72%Director: Liz GarbusWriter: Michael WerwieCast: Amy Ryan, Thomasin McKenzie, Lola Kirke, Oona Laurence, Gabriel Byrne, Miriam ShorSynopsis: When Mari Gilbert’s daughter disappears, police inaction drives her own investigation into the gated Long Island community where Shannan was last seen. Committed to finding the truth, Mari brings attention to over a dozen murdered sex workers she will not let the world forget. Inspired by true events. Why We re Excited: In the documentary world, Liz Garbus is a star with two Oscar nominations, three Emmys, and two Peabody Awards, just to name a few of her accolades. Her previous works include The Farm: Angola, USA; Bobby Fischer Against the World, and What Happened, Miss Simone?, which played at Sundance back in 2015. Jumping over to the narrative side of filmmaking, Garbus uses the roots of a true story to launch into the story of Lost Girls.Be Water (2020) 93%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Director: Bao NguyenSynopsis: In 1971, after being rejected by Hollywood, Bruce Lee returned to his parents’ homeland of Hong Kong to complete four iconic films. Charting his struggles between two worlds, this portrait explores questions of identity and representation through the use of rare archival interviews with loved ones and Bruce’s own writings. Why We re Excited: Do you need more reasons to watch this than all the rare, never-before-seen archival goodies and candid interviews from Bruce Lee’s loved ones? Nguyen’s directorial debut – Live from New York!, which looked at the storied history of Saturday Night Live – opened the Tribeca Film Festival a few years back. Be Water is the director’s second feature.Shirley (2020) 87%(Photo by Thatcher Keats courtesy of Sundance Institute)Director: Josephine DeckerWriter: Sarah GubbinsCast: Elisabeth Moss, Michael Stuhlbarg, Odessa Young, Logan LermanSynopsis: A young couple moves in with famed author Shirley Jackson and her Bennington College professor husband, Stanley Hyman, in the hope of starting a new life, but instead find themselves fodder for a psychodrama that inspires Shirley’s next novel. Why We re Excited: In 2018, Josephine Decker’s Madeline’s Madeline made quite the splash. The surprising film followed a teenager through her sometimes confrontational experimental theater classes and a tense relationship with her mother while blurring the lines between fantasy and reality. The film would earn two Spirit Awards and a nomination for best picture at the Gotham Awards. Shirley is Decker’s triumphant return to Sundance.I Carry You With Me (2020) 97%(Photo by Alejandro López courtesy of Sundance Institute)Director: Heidi EwingWriters: Heidi Ewing, Alan Page ArriagaCast: Armando Espitia, Christian Vázquez, Michelle Rodríguez, Ángeles Cruz, Arcelia Ramírez, Michelle GonzálezSynopsis: Based on a true story, a chance encounter between two men in provincial Mexico sparks an epic love story spanning decades. Ambition and societal pressure propel an aspiring chef to leave his soul mate and make the treacherous journey to New York, where life will never be the same. Why We re Excited: Another documentary filmmaker taking the plunge into narrative filmmaking, Ewing is a longtime Sundance alum (Class of ‘10, ‘12, and ‘16) and earned an Oscar nomination for her eye-opening look at modern evangelical Christianity, Jesus Camp. I Carry You With Me is unlike anything else the documentarian has done before, and if you’d like to see more of her work at this year’s Sundance, you can catch her co-directed docuseries with Rachel Grady, Love Fraud.Like this? Female superheroes have been around almost as long as the genre itself, with Wonder Woman paving the way for a diverse group of characters as far back as the 1940s. On television, she also established a foothold alongside characters like The Mighty Isis and Electra Woman in the 1970s. Unfortunately, as superheroes disappeared from television in the 1980s, so too did these initial, beloved characters. With the big expansion of superhero television in the 21st Century, female superheroes returned, and it is nearly impossible to think of a series without a key superpowered woman in the cast. Granted, very few headline a series currently, there is only one female-led superhero show but their contributions often keep their shows running. But who are the best on television right now? And is it their abilities, life experience, or strength of will that makes them great? Here are seven of the greatest female superheroes on television right now who prove it is a combination of all three factors that sets them apart from the rest.Supergirl  Supergirl 90%(Photo by Jordon Nuttall/The CW)Debut in Comics: Action Comics #252Abilities: flight, super strength, super speed, invulnerability, heat vision, x-ray vision, super hearingCertainly the most powerful of the female superheroes on television, Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) also boasts the most diverse set of abilities. On a physical level, she can dish it out easily, but Kara’s most important power is often her sense of hope and empathy. She never wants to get into a brawl – in fact, she prefers to avoid it – and would rather make a foe her ally. This sometimes works out, as when Livewire (Brit Morgan) helped out on Kara’s mission to Fort Roz last year. And other times, as with season 3 nemesis Reign (Odette Annable), Kara s appeals may fail to warm an evil heart, which forces a fight. Nonetheless, Kara s opponents often mistake her hope as a weakness instead of the bedrock of her strengths.Syd Barrett  Legion 91%(Photo by Prashant Gupta/FX)Debut in Comics: n/aAbilities: body switchingLet’s face it, Syd (Rachel Keller) has not had an easy go of it on FX’s Legion. When we meet her, she lives in extreme isolation, thanks to her cruel mutant ability – any skin-to-skin contact will see her consciousness transferred to the body of the person touching her. Nonetheless, she manages to find some semblance of a life with the people at Summerland and David Haller (Dan Stevens). Then he disappears for a year. During that time, she learns to control her ability as the Summerland group ally with Division 3, the government agency previously engaged in hunting them. And once David resurfaces and she learns his role in the coming apocalypse, she resolves to either heal him or kill him. David escalates things by trying to restore their previous love affair and assaulting her, but despite the complete betrayal, Syd bounces back and rededicates herself to the one action guaranteed to save the world. That resiliency, especially in the world of Legion, is a superpower in its own right.Black Canary  Arrow 86%(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW Network)Debut in Comics: Flash Comics #86 (as Dinah Drake)Abilities: sonic cry, advanced combat trainingDinah Drake’s (Juliana Harkavy) sonic cry certainly came in handy when Team Arrow needed a new member to replace the deceased Black Canary, Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy). She also proved a worthy opponent to Laurel s villainous Earth-2 counterpart, Black Siren (also Cassidy). But even if she was not a meta, Dinah would certainly be worthy to stand alongside the team as an accomplished fighter. With her staff, she’s almost unstoppable. She also has superb strength of character, as exemplified by her willingness to work with Black Siren – now pretending to be the Earth-1 Laurel and operating as the Star City District Attorney – and even moving past her culpability in the death of Dinah’s ex-boyfriend Vincent (Johann Urb). That strength takes on many forms, even as recently as this week’s episode, in which she finally admitted to the team that she can no longer use her cry. Though reluctant, her willingness to share illustrates her continued growth and is yet another reason why she will continue to be the Canary long after Team Arrow disintegrates as noted in the 2040 flash-forwards.Polaris  The Gifted 79%(Photo by Ryan Green/Fox)Debut in Comics:The X-Men #49Abilities: magnetic manipulationSure, Lorna Dane (Emma Dumont) may have spent most of the second season of The Gifted allied with the very questionable Inner Circle, but her willingness to admit her mistake in this regard puts her back on the right side, even if she stayed away from the remaining Mutant Underground characters. From the series first moments, Lorna was portrayed as one of the most powerful mutants around, thanks to an ability that can stop bullets, open fences, and even bring down an entire airplane, killing all of its passengers. That last point certainly set up a heel-turn, but as the show’s second year progressed, Lorna saw the downside of her actions and the horrifying real intent of Inner Circle’s plan to create a mutant homeland. Nonetheless, she acknowledged her errors and resolved to make amends. That resiliency is part of what makes Lorna one of the most interesting characters on the show, and doubly so as she remains strong while combating a chronic mental illness. Should the show continue in the Disney era of X-Men properties, it will be interesting to see how she juggles the roles of hero and mother. She would probably say they are the same thing.Killer Frost  The Flash 89%(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Debut in Comics: Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #19 (as Caitlin Snow)Abilities: ice generation and manipulationThis is a strange one, as Killer Frost is traditionally a villain. But The Flash took her on a curious journey as viewers discovered she is a distinct personality from her host, Dr. Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) – one dedicated to protecting Caitlin above all other concerns. Nonetheless, the pull toward selfish acts and quick answers was strong (see her alliance with Savitar in season 3), but as she and Caitlin learned to share one body, Frost also learned empathy. And then, she was seemingly gone for a time, and the absence affected Caitlin and the fans more acutely than anyone could predict. She eventually resurfaced with a resolve to be more of a team player she s a far cry from the woman who walked away from Team Flash at the end of season 3. Meanwhile, in the current season, her powers prove uniquely effective against Cicada (Chris Klein) as she is immune to his power-dampening dagger. It s a good thing she decided to work with the group, otherwise their few successes against the meta serial killer would not have been possible.Elasti-Woman   Doom Patrol 97%(Photo by DC Universe)Debut in Comics: My Greatest Adventure #80 (as Elasti-Girl)Abilities: limited shape changing and mass exchangeRita Farr (April Bowlby) is a ways from admitting this to herself, but she has the strength to lead a superhero team even one as dysfunctional as a the Doom Patrol. On a purely physical level, she must have Supergirl levels of strength to maintain her human form. When out of control, she is a giant rolling mass capable of occupying an entire city block. Keeping that form in check requires tons of strength, to say nothing of mental fortitude. Sure, she still slips from time to time with so much of her power devoted to retaining her idealized shape, the slightest emotional upset can weaken her resolve but that’s the real challenge she faces in the first season of the show: accepting those mistakes as part of her path to becoming a strong and capable woman. Along the way, she might even figure out how to use her gelatinous form to stretch like her comic book counterpart. At that point, she will be more formidable than even Jane (Diane Guerrero) or Robotman (Brendan Fraser).Zari Tomaz   DC's Legends of Tomorrow 89%(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Debut in Comics: Shazam! #25 (as The Mighty Isis)Abilities: air manipulationWhen Zari (Tala Ashe) first joined the Waverider crew, she was sarcastic, reluctant to engage, and more of a hindrance to the mission than an asset. In short, she was a Legend in the making. She abused the ship’s food replication system to snack endlessly and played video games constantly in lieu of getting to know anybody. Nonetheless, she would also call out the other Legends for being slackers, and after getting caught in a time loop, she learned to care about them. She also began to involve herself in the mission, particularly once the group discovered the Air Totem that generates her abilities was tied to their opponent, the time demon Mallus. By the point the Legends found the other totems and unified them into a giant Cuddle Me Beebo doll to fight Mallus, she was definitely a member of the team. In the most recent season, Zari has continued to grow, taking on more responsibilities and even mentoring new recruit Charlie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers). Well, mentoring after a fashion. And while she continues to grow as a hero or as much of a hero as a Legend can be she still finds time to snack.Like this? 168亚洲体育官方网站 nd masculinity. Nichols walks a fine line between finding Val’s request and the subsequent comedy of errors it precipitates as preposterous and hilarious, insulting and entertaining. And while Albert may look like a fey stooge, it is his sensibility which runs through the film; it’s his drag which saves the day and reveals the Keeleys’ (and Val’s) hang-ups as utterly laughable. In its campy theatrics, The Birdcage encourages us all to be more like Albert, to see in his gay femininity a kind of strength we all too often mock and disparage. Sometimes even within ourselves.Manuel Betancourt is a culture writer and film critic interested in all things queer and Latinx. www.mbetancourt.comLike this?
