亚博游戏主页采用百度引擎0(Baidu 5)Troys from across different realities charged with the defense of the DC  Multiverse and, most recently, a magical golem created to kill Diana. A few more origins for the character are even more convoluted with false memories, Titans of Myth, and the old multiverse.“I’d be a crazy person if I tried to be all these Donnas,” said Leslie of the more esoteric multiverse concepts for the character. Ultimately, it was Wolfman s idea of an orphaned Donna taken in by Diana that appealed to her the most, because “it feels the most inspiring and relateable and it feels like you can go more places. I also like the idea of Diana taking this girl under her wing. You can create this character as an adult based on how she was raised or what she was raised around and who was her guardian,” she explained. “The other [versions] also feel like there’s an end point. Someone will die or it will be the end of all.”Luckily, the actress discussion with Walker leaned toward that reading of the character’s history. But Leslie said she picked up on “the common character traits people love about her” across several versions and incorporated that into her performance.“She’s really cool,” Leslie added. “A friend of mine was like ‘you’re just like her,” and I said, “No, I just try to be like her sometimes, but this girl is pure cool. Nothing ruffles her feathers. ”Who Is Donna Troy?(Photo by DC Universe)Thanks to oblique references made during the episode, viewers can glean that some of the Wolfman origin was indeed incorporated into the series. Donna mentions Diana “took her in.” At the same time, she exhibits heightened abilities more in line with Diana than human vigilantes like Batman or Dick, suggesting the Amazons also gave her powers.Leslie imagined Donna likely became Wonder Girl earlier than Dick became Robin. “I think she has an additional five years in this [crimefighting] world,” she said, adding her hypothesis that it was the extra experience, more than her powers, that led to the confident Donna glimpsed in the episode-opening flashback. In the scene, she is ready to take Dick to task for brooding because Batman and Wonder Woman excluded him from “League stuff.”She also imagined a very different home life for Donna as well. According to Leslie, “the influence from Diana was much more supportive” than the relationship between Dick and Batman. She also presumes her Wonder Girl wore the red suit her comic book counterpart wore into the 1980s. The character s experiences as a sidekick led to the Donna Troy people met in the episode: “An incredible, strong, fierce, non-compromising woman” and someone who “has a good rein on who she is,” Leslie said. “She’s a force to be reckoned with and she’s very inspiring. Comic book fans know that Dick and Donna have a friendship — forged during Donna s time as Wonder Girl — and in the TV series the two are essentially best friends with a sibling-like dynamic. They grew up around the same time and they have similar backgrounds. They were guarded by these guardians that happened to be superheroes,” Leslie said. But their relationship won t get romantic, and Leslie appreciated that the characters dynamic on the show is strictly platonic. She added, “I can see why people would want to put these two together because they’re so comfortable with each other, but that comfort comes from this loving brother-sister relationship. It’s refreshing because we don’t show it a lot in television. You can have a [male] friend for a long time that you don’t do anything with. We need some of that in television.”Who Is Dick Grayson?(Photo by DC Universe)The characters’ sibling bond makes Donna the only person Dick can really turn to after his final days as Robin, and Donna’s transition out of the hero world gives her a unique insight into Dick’s troubles. As the episode opens, Dick feels he doesn t have control over his situation. He feels that Robin owns him,” Leslie said. That feeling highlights one key difference that made Donna’s move away from Wonder Girl less traumatic than Dick’s current experiences: the support of her adoptive parent. Diana was willing to offer her wisdom and tools when Donna chose to leave superheroes behind, and, most importantly to Leslie, Diana was capable of saying “you can be your own person.”“Dick has cut Bruce out of his life, he’s taken the chip out of his arm, and he’s burned the suit. He’s trying not to have ties to it,” she explained. “It’s a struggle for Dick.”Thanks to the support she received, the Donna viewers meet in the episode is quite comfortable in her own skin as a photographer and investigative journalist. She can still enter places of conflict and save people, but as someone who documents important events and shares them with the public.“She wanted to figure out how to do good in the world without being on the front line,” Leslie said. “It probably didn’t take her a thousand jobs to figure out what she was going to do.” Plus, “she’s able to be Donna Troy in her day to day and live that life, but she can be Wonder Girl in a sense behind that camera.”Will Donna Be Wonder Girl Again?(Photo by DC Universe)At the end of Donna s debut episode, the character becomes embroiled in what Leslie called “Dick’s mess” and joins him on Angela’s farm, where a new trouble awaits all of the Titans. In subsequent episodes, viewers will see “aspects of [Wonder Girl] come through,” Leslie said. This will be particularly true as Donna gets to know the other Titans. She added that Donna has also been “keeping some accessories,” which could be a reference to Wonder Girl’s bracelets or even to the comic book Donna Troy’s lasso, which could compel people to do her bidding if their will was weaker than hers.Leslie said Donna’s status as a full-time Titan will depend on “how the team is formed.” But she also said Donna is “getting slowly dragged back into it, and that might be hard to walk away from.”“I see the possibility of her joining the team,” she added. If she does, Leslie said she believes Donna will have to decide on a new version of who she wants to be.” Considering her comic book counterpart, she will have plenty of personas to choose from.Titans airs Fridays on DC Universe.

HBO)The Night King flies in on a high pressure storm front and, with a wave of his hand, commands his followers to create wight bridges over the trench fires, so that the others can climb over them. The zombies crawl up and over the walls World War Z style.Arya fighting on the wall is awe-inspiring and strikes Ser Davos silent. It also prompts The Hound to get his ass in gear to save her.7. “Not Today”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Arya plays a deadly game of hide-and-seek with the wights who have made it inside Winterfell. There are too many of them. So now we know what was obscured in the darkness of the trailer: dozens of wights chasing our petite hero. When Beric and The Hound later come to her rescue, it’s almost as if Arya had given up. She stares almost helplessly when wights attack Beric, which is very unlike her. The trio retreats to a room where Melisandre has been hiding/waiting for them, and Beric dies.“What do we say to the god of death?” Melisandre asks Arya, which immediately summons the ghost of Syrio Forel (not literally).Arya: “Not today.”(Photo by HBO)8. Dragon Fight!(Photo by HBO)The dragons in the moonlight above the storm clouds is a beautiful image – this-dragon-moment-is-brought-to-you-by-Hallmark beautiful. But the scene later turns deadly as Jon and Rhaegal lock together in dragon battle against the Night King and wight dragon Viserion, who tears at his brother’s flesh and snaps his jaws at snack-sized Jon on Rhaegal’s back. The Night King tries to be smooth and grabs for his ice spear, but falls off (not to his death, of course – because that would be too easy). The scene of Winterfell from the air at this point, by the way, looks like a nighttime Burning Man riot: a circle of fire and waves of bodies flowing this way and that.Rhaegal goes down and Jon tumbles off. Daenerys tries dragonfire on the Night King on the ground, but he does not burn (like a Targaryen). She retreats when he aims a spear her way, but Jon pursues him on foot with Longclaw. The Night King raises a new army from the freshly dead, including those inside Winterfell – including, they make a point to show, Lyanna, Qhono, and Edd. Was that Podrick standing behind the Night King before he pimp-walked away? OMG, where’s Podrick?Wights, meanwhile, swarm Drogon, and Daenerys falls off.9. Tales from the Crypt(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Tyrion laments that he’s not out there. Sansa says he’d be dead. Then he suggests they should’ve stayed married. She rightly notes his divided loyalties (aka “You loooove her, you want to marry her…”) for Daenerys. The dead rise in the crypt of Winterfell even (thanks for the heads-up, Jared Harris), and dusty, ancient Starks start tearing at people.Next time, maybe freeze them in carbonite?10. Theon and Jorah(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)The Night King swaggers into the godswood with his court. Bran: “Theon, you’re a good man. Thank you.” Theon charges the Night King and gets a spear thrust into his side.Elsewhere, when a wight wave threatens to overcome Daenerys, Ser Jorah puts himself between them and her and is mortally (maybe, probably) wounded protecting her. He leans on Heartsbane in his final stand.11. “Arya Stark” Becomes a Verb(Photo by HBO)Holy sh ! Arya killed the Night King. She takes a flying leap and, despite being caught by the throat, still manages to thrust that ancient Valyrian-steel dagger into his belly. (To Arya Stark someone will forever refer to that move.) He explodes, his court explodes, Viserion (who Jon has been dodging all this time) collapses to the ground in a pile of loose bones and ragged flesh, as do all of the other wights.(We heard echos of Jon’s voice: “How did you sneak up on me?”)(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)There’s a roll call of who’s still alive: Arya, Bran, Daenerys, Jorah (until he s not), Drogon, Jon, Tormund, Gendry, Grey Worm, Brienne, Jaime, Podrick, Tyrion, Sansa, Varys, his new little crypt birds, Missandei, Gilly and Little Sam (did anyone see Samwell Tarly in the roll call?), The Hound, Melisandre (until she isn’t), and Ser Davos. Where s Ghost!? Did Rhaegal survive?I hit “replay.”What was your favorite moment of the episode? The Call of the Wild (2020) 62% Jack London s celebrated adventure novel The Call of the Wild has made it to the big screen a handful of times since its publication in 1903, but none of the prior efforts had the benefit of advanced computer technology to help bring the story s central character, the St. Bernard-Scotch Collie mix named Buck, to life. As risky a proposition as that may be, reviews say it mostly pays off in this week s The Call of the Wild. The story follows the CGI-animated Buck as he is dognapped from his blissful domestic life in California and sold as a beast of burden in the Alaskan Yukon. There, he comes under the care of a postman (Omar Sy) and learns the way of the sled dog before a series of misfortunes lands him in the hands of an aging gold prospector named John Thornton (Harrison Ford), and the two form an unlikely bond. Critics say The Call of the Wild is a mostly genial if slightly sanitized retelling of the tale that makes the most of its scenic locales and a grizzled, world-weary Harrison Ford, who brings both pathos and warmth to his character. Although the computerized Buck might be a distraction for some, the human performances help ground the film every time it treads a bit too far into the uncanny valley. That said, parents should be forewarned that, although the darkest moments (read: deaths) take place off screen, there are still scenes of animal cruelty and a palpable sadness that creeps in from time to time, so be prepared to comfort more sensitive toddlers.

two have no place being together. It s like a strawberry shortcake and a cannoli.’ That s how he described LaRusso and Ali Mills. It was fun. It was the birth of those young characters, young love, high school, adolescence, all that stuff.”(Photo by ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)Zabka: “We got along great. She was tough, she was athletic, she was a soccer player. Really physical, and she was just an all-natural girl and beautiful and cool, and we became friends. The only time I got connected in the whole movie with a punch or a kick [was during] the country club scene where Daniel comes in and gets the spaghetti on him, and then I laugh and Lisa punches me in the jaw. Every single time she connected, like, boom. Pat Johnson s like, ‘No, step back and swing.’ But I think every single time she hit my jaw. In fact, when Daniel falls down in the spaghetti and I m laughing, I m half laughing at the fact that she just hit me. Yeah, she was great.”“What Pat Morita taught me more than anything is not to take things for granted, to revel in the opportunity that you have.”Macchio: “I mean, with Pat Morita, everything he brought — I was truly witnessing the right actor in the right role, never taking it for granted, feeling a great responsibility, meaning him feeling a great responsibility playing a Japanese-American in that film at that time. And I always bring this information to the table, that The Karate Kid is the first mainstream major motion picture that ever dealt with the World War II Japanese internment camps. The movie is so often thought of as pop culture, ‘Get him a body bag,’ crane kicks, waxing on, and catching flies with chopsticks, but it also has all these other deeper elements to it, which is why it s, in my view, a great film. What he taught me more than anything is not to take things for granted, to revel in the opportunity that you have. There was an ease of working with him in those scenes. There s something relaxed about it. He would talk to John Avildsen or myself about the headband, which was called the hachimaki. Using that, taking it out of his pocket [to] use it as a napkin, or a handkerchief to wipe [your brow], but then you d also wear it, and then we d put it on for training purposes. Daniel always wore it for that.(Photo by ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)All those moments and experiencing him teaching us [about] that culture, and wanting to pay homage and respect to the Japanese-American culture — Okinawan in this case — taught me that those moments of ease that we had just fed into the chemistry that we had that I didn t even know we had. It wasn t like I was trying to have good chemistry with Pat Morita, or he was really trying hard to be a good actor with me. It just organically was that way. And what I learned from that is when that just happens organically, it usually will translate. It just is one of those meant-to-be partnerships that was really special — something I ll have forever, and that we ll all have forever. It s really sweet, and I m the lucky one. That s how I look at it.”“Martin Kove came in character with a black belt on. For all I knew, he was the real deal.”Zabka: “I meet Martin Kove in character as Kreese. So I never met the actor Martin Kove. ‘Hi, I m Martin. I m playing your sensei.’ That was deliberate. Pat Johnson, who trained us for all the fight stuff, before Martin was cast, he played Kreese. And he trained me as Kreese, and he would be super intense and in your face and louder and bigger than even Marty was. He put the imprint of who Kreese was on me. And then when Martin Kove came in, it was in the dojo scene. …He came in character with a black belt on. For all I knew, he was the real deal. The scene where Ralph walks into the dojo, and I whisper to him that somebody s here, I mean, you could see that they had more of a relationship than just sensei. There was a personal relationship that happened, that s continuing now. But then when he says, ‘Sweep the leg.’ That moment, it was Marty Kove that caused that reaction in me, which was just to check him out. I mean, he was so intense and so big. A good actor s going to draw out the best from you. So he filled the shoes and sucked it out of me. And only now [do] I know Marty. I think if I knew him as I know him now, then, I might ve laughed in his face. No, I m just kidding. Just kidding, Marty!”(Photo by ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)“It was like a dance routine, and we had it down.”Macchio: “It was about a week we shot the All Valley Tournament. I remember it vividly. We spent part of the entire shoot, say, three months, just rehearsing those fight sequences and our final fight. It was like a ballet. I mean, it really was. We were trained so well. We d be further apart. And as we’d get better and better, we had the pads on. And then we slowly but surely got closer and closer. There weren t a lot of changes. Some last minute, ‘Oh, we need this to be a little this,’ but for the most part it was like a dance routine, and we had it down. It was a great moment for me, because I win. The character wins the fight. For Billy, his character loses the fight. But for us to perform that the first time, six cameras, John Avildsen, who had directed Rocky, among others. You were in the hands of the best. And we filled up the arena with the extras, and they saw it for the first time. And we did it for the first time in front of a crowd, and that is a big part of the base, the spine, of what that scene is. I mean, there s all the other cuts. We got back and got pieces, but that was an amazing experience, just that. You could run into trouble with the amount of adrenaline, because you re just so jacked up, but we were so well-trained. It was a tango, and it was awesome.”(Photo by ©Columbia Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)Zabka: “It was electric. It changed from the rehearsals, where we were at one energy, to step It s like doing theater, I guess. You step out and there s the audience, and it just brings you up to a whole other place that you didn t expect to happen. So I remember doing it. I think we did the whole fight I don t remember shooting in blocks. We went from the beginning of the fight to the end of the fight. Like, the whole thing. It wasn t like, ‘OK, here s this kick. Here s that piece.’ I mean, we went out and performed this whole fight. In the breaks, I remember when they would say, ‘Cut.’ And there was a scene where Pat Johnson says, ‘Take a knee.’ Because he s hurt. And I m sitting there, and the cameras were cut for a moment, and I can look up and see the fans. They re like, ‘Boo, boo.’ And my mom was sitting in the audience, and she s like, ‘my baby!’ And I m like, ‘It s OK, mom. It s OK. I m acting.’ Yeah, but it was awesome. The fans, the people, the energy. There were actually some real martial artists there, real karate schools, and a real mini tournament happening in the background to make it look authentic. There s kids in pads sparring and all that. They had an actual tournament that day. It s kind of like a fake one, but real. They had real kids sparring with each other in the background. So the environment was authentic to what a real karate tournament would ve been like, and then we step out with our black belts. I remember walking out with my black belt, going, ‘I m such a fraud right now. If they only knew.’ I m walking in, and then they re like, ‘Who s that kid?’ I’m, like, the actor that has done this for three months, and I hope I don t kick Ralph.”“All of a sudden there it was, and it was great.”Macchio: “‘You’re the Best Around’ was, I think, a Rocky 3 reject. … Bill Conti did the score for both Rocky and The Karate Kid — spectacular, the underscoring. But I think that was a song that didn t make it into an earlier film. It might ve been from the first Rocky. What I didn t know was the music when Daniel is training in the water, trying to stand on one leg and the waves are pummeling him, I remember that day. Bill Conti was on set on the beach, and he was playing for Avildsen the type of classical music he was thinking of. And so I got a glimpse of that, which helps, because then when you re doing the scene, you envision the sound of it, because the score is a big component in storytelling.”“I got my movie. We don t need to shoot it.”Zabka: “Originally [the film ended with] the scene where Kreese chokes me out and Miyagi saves all of us. And then lights were out after we finished the tournament and John Avildsen said, ‘I got my movie. We don t need to shoot it.’ And I guess called Jerry Weintraub, and said, ‘I don t think we need to shoot that scene.’ He goes, ‘Alright, go home.’”Macchio: “What s interesting is at that point, I think, if memory serves— and it does get foggy after decades and decades — but I believe at that point, they said, ‘Listen, if we ever do one, we can always open a sequel with that scene.’ And I don t know why, but in my head, I remember hearing those words from, whether it was Avildsen, or Weintraub, that their thought was they were ahead of the game as far as starting the sequel, assuming we were going to have a hit.”ALSO WATCH: ORAL HISTORY OF COBRA KAI WITH RALPH MACCHIO AND WILLIAM ZABKAThe Karate Kid was released in theaters June 22, 1984

(Photo by DC Comics)The Premise: A look at the day-to-day lives of the Neopolis Police Department’s 10th Precinct. In many ways, it resembles the venerable 1980s cop drama Hill Street Blues – except for the fact all the cops are superheroes in a world where almost everyone has a power and a costumed identity. Across the 12 issues and one hardcover special written by Moore, the series heavily featured detective Jeff Smax and his new partner Toybox. Of course, stories of other police officers and cases filtered throughout, even as it culminated in an overarching tale of government corruption. The Approach: If one chose to ignore the larger story developed across Moore s 12-issue run, it is very easy to see the program as its initial pitch: Hill Street Blues in a world of superheroes. Unlike, say, Sony’s adaptation of Powers, Top 10 would need the prestige budget to pull off the world as designed by artists Gene Ha and Zander Cannon; it’s stuffed to the margins with amazing-looking superheroes who flutter by for only an instant. Then there are the major characters like Smax, Dust Devil, and Sergeant Hyperdog to consider. They would be expensive to translate to live-action.But a point of departure from the comics could come from leaning even further in to the Hill Street Blues format, which burned its ongoing dramas slowly while favoring cases of the week. The format has served Law Order: Special Victims Unit well for 20 years and would give Top 10 enough of an engine to run five or so seasons as a prestige drama on a streaming service. From Hell As A Gritty and Complex Limited Series(Photo by Penguin Random House)The Premise: Inspector Frederick Abberline and charlatan psychic Robert James Lee investigate the vicious murders of sex workers in the Whitechapel district of London. The sensational details of the murders grab the attention of the Fleet Street papers, which leads the killer to write in and to the introduction of his legendary sobriquet: Jack the Ripper. Meanwhile, Royal Physician and Freemason Sir William Gull accepts an assignment from Queen Victoria to end the threat of an illegitimate heir via her grandson Albert marrying a commoner girl from the East End. He is also ordered to silence a group of sex workers who know the truth and attempt to blackmail one of the conspirators. The mission gives Gull the chance perform an obscure rite that will both solidify male dominance over women and, as he sees it, birth the 20th century. The Approach: Honestly, a direct adaptation would serve From Hell the best. The film version, directed by Albert and Allen Hughes, abandoned Moore’s compelling “why-dunit” narrative almost entirely in favor of the traditional “whodunit” seen in most Jack the Ripper movies. The text of From Hell (brilliantly realized by the great Eddie Campbell) leads readers down more sinister allies of government conspiracies, into the mysticism hidden in the layout of London, and even gives us a bit of time travel. It also features some striking characters in the form of Marie Kelly, Abberline, and Lee – to say nothing of Gull himself, who Moore and Campbell bring to such vivid life.Unlike some of the other Moore comics on this list, though, From Hell could only arrive on television as an eight-episode limited series. Both the story and its construction require the tight confines of the TV format, just like the original comics themselves.Miracleman As Prestige Drama With Big Names(Photo by Marvel)The Premise: By saying the word “Kimota!”, Michael Moran transforms into Miracleman – a character not unlike Shazam. Losing about a decade to a perceived amnesia, Moran eventually learns his time as Miracleman was a simulation orchestrated by the British government. It leads to conflict with fellow test subject Johnny Bates, who destroys the center of London and kills some 40,000 people. In the wake of their devastating battle, Miracleman is revealed to the world and decides to do the only sensible thing left to him: take over the planet and run it himself. The Approach: Mircaleman – also known as Marvelman in the U.K. – may lend itself the most to a Watchmen-style reinvention. In fact, writer Neil Gaiman and artist Mark Buckingham already did a lot of the development of the concept when they took over Miracleman from Moore and his collaborators. In their “Golden Age” storyline, Gaiman and Buckingham revealed a world under stress from the utopia built by Miracleman. The individual issues told tales of regular people chaffing against that fantastic world, removing Moran from the center of the action to a seemingly distant force. That concept would allow for a prestige drama about real people coping with an unwanted occupation. And like Watchmen, it would leave the text of the Moore stories as its history. Such a series could also find a way to finish up Gaiman and Buckingham’s abandoned “Silver Age” story, which was to see the return of Bates and reveal larger cracks in Miracleman s brave new world.Like the other Moore comics we’ve discussed so far, the idea fits snugly into the realm of prestige dramas on streaming services, meaning it would need a low episode count and a cadre of impressive actors to breathe life into its world.Tom Strong As High-End Animated Series(Photo by DC Comics)The Premise: Science hero Tom Strong – a spin on pulp adventurers like Doc Savage – his wife Dhalua, and their daughter Tesla, explore the world and battle science villains with the aid of steam-powered robot Pneuman and super-smart gorilla King Solomon. Along the way, luxurious flashbacks told in the style of older comics reveal Strong’s origins and other adventures from his long life. The Approach: The whimsical and good-hearted nature of the original Tom Strong series by Moore and artist Chris Sprouse lends itself best to an animated series. Of course, a high-end series with great animation and an absurd attention to details. The format allows the potential series to keep Sprouse’s design aesthetic while also seamlessly switching to other art or animation styles as the story dictates. It also means the program could keep the decidedly un-Watchmen feel of the comic. Designed in many respects to pull away from Moore’s tendency to deconstruct genre, Tom Strong is a character whose seeming simplicity calls for the sort of complexity one can find in the best animated tales.Captain Britain As A Disney+ Original(Photo by Marvel Comics)The Premise: A member of the lower aristocracy, Brian Braddock comes upon his powers when Merlyn (who claims to be the wizard of the Arthur legend) and his daughter Roma save him from a bad bike accident. Accepting the Amulet of Might, Brian is suffused with energy and becomes the Captain Britain of Earth-616, the main Earth of the Marvel Multiverse. Facing a gaggle of homegrown threats and inter-dimensional crises, Brian also attempts to keep up with his studies at university. When Moore and artist Alan Davis took over the character, they introduced characters like the time-traveling mercs known as the Special Executive and a superhero-slaying monster called The Fury. He and Davis also introduced the notion of the Marvel Multi-verse itself and even the Earth-616 designation. The Approach: Clearly, this is a Disney+ series waiting to happen. With its close ties to the multi-verse, it could serve as a way to explore those ideas – to say nothing of introducing different Marvel Earths – while also telling a very localized story about a British hero with deep roots in the country’s own mythology and history. Merlyn’s participation also gives such a show a mystical element not seen in the other Disney+ projects announced thus far. Also, with Captain Britain’s ties to the X-Men (his sister is the telepathic mutant formerly known as Psylocke), the series could also slyly introduce those characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All that said, this may be the one concept so removed from Moore’s spirit that it may not be much of a sacrilege to bring it to the screen. Also, since we were fans of the Excalibur comic by Chris Claremont and Davis, we just want the character to make his MCU debut.Like this? The concept of a nuclear disaster (and the inevitable fallout) is nothing new in pop culture. Whether it s the hit Fallout video game franchise or horror films like The Return of the Living Dead and Robert Rodriguez s Grindhouse installment, Planet Terror, the trope of a chemical disaster and the monsters it births into the world is a subgenre that has kept audiences entertained for decades. Those examples are far enough removed from the real world, giving viewers an escapist perspective filled with zombified humans and mutated beasts to battle. It s an easier pill to swallow when such a catastrophic event is flooded with a plethora of supernatural goodies. Then there s HBO s Chernobyl.Creator Craig Mazin s (The Hangover Part II, Identity Thief) bleak five-part mini-series does away with the expected horror tropes audiences have become familiar with and, instead, delivers an up-close, completely terrifying, and grotesquely personal look at Ukraine s infamous 1986 power plant explosion — including the government cover-up and devastating calamity that followed. Here, no undead hordes or mutant hounds can be found shambling about the vacated Soviet roads. Instead, the big bad of the historical drama is largely unseen. It s everywhere and nowhere at the same time, only making itself known to unsuspecting passersby once it s too late. The agonizing visuals of skin melting off living innocent bodies is just the tip of the aesthetic iceberg here, and really nails home the extent of the damage caused. The tons of toxic poison seen billowing out of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant s exposed roof is the ominous villain here. The unseen monster, followed by the even more damaging accomplice of the lies the government tells to save face, come together in a way so catastrophic, so heartwrenching, and so unbelievable that we can t help but label Chernobyl as the scariest thing we ve seen on TV in years — and maybe even ever.It s unsurprising then, that critical praise collected along the way had given the series Certified Fresh status with an impressive 96% on the Tomatometer with 47 reviews.SPOILER ALERT: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS DETAILS ABOUT THE FIRST THREE EPISODES OF CHERNOBYL. STOP HERE IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED.(Photo by HBO)In the closing moments of episode 2, titled Please Remain Calm, three brave men, fully outfitted in protective suits and gas masks, wade through the flooded tunnels beneath the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. With the reactor core exploded and exposed, pouring tons upon tons of nuclear materials into the air, these men — dubbed by history as The Suicide Squad — ventured into the bowels of the building to open the pipes in order to drain the water (which, upon hitting the open core, would allegedly create lava that would drain into Europe s main water source). Their bravery stopped a full-blown meltdown from occurring. It s a horrifying moment and one that is fully brought to claustrophobic life through nothing more than dim lighting, the men s belabored breathing, and their radiation detectors constant ticking sound: an ominous reminder of just how embedded in the chaos they really are. The scene is so stifling that we d be hard-pressed not to mention our own shortness of breath upon viewing the episode. While we ve seen instances of such events play out in big-budget action films, it s worth noting here that before 1986 the world had rarely faced a catastrophe like this, one whose impact on humanity and mother nature would reverberate on such a mind-boggling scale. And that detail brings with it an even more baffling truth: No one knew how to fix it.Soviet nuclear physicist Valery Legasov (Jared Harris) and Soviet Minister of Energy Boris Scherbina (Stellan Skarsgård) are brought in to investigate and ultimately clean up the mess, rightfully carrying the story as the chemicals and news of the accident spread. It really is a rousing spectacle when you take a step back and view the miniseries from afar. The addition of Emily Watson s Ulana Khomyuk — who Mazin said is a fictional character, created as an amalgamation of the nuclear scientists called in to fix things — adds an insightful layer to the world-building of Chernobyl. It was five years before the Soviet Union crumbled, meaning in 1980s Russia women were rarely seen in such scientific roles. The antiquated nature of the gender roles portrayed here gives clarity to a society and time we Americans only know passing information about. It s probably worth noting that the Chernobyl accident happened the same year the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded and the news of that tragic instance quickly dissipated.
The bad streak for horror continues, as nobody came out for Brahms: The Boy II. STX withheld the movie from critics and got themselves 5,000 in Thursday night previews, which was a bit more than the 0,000 that The Lazarus Effect made back in 2015. Only, that film went on to gross .2 million that weekend and Brahms’ .9 million is much closer to Pride Prejudice and Zombies (.32 million) which had 0,000 in previews. When reviews started to trickle in on Friday, The Boy II was resting at 0% for much of the day, before it managed to get out of the single digits and currently sits at 11%. That is still in the territory of films like Rings (8%), Slender Man (7%), and the 2017 Flatliners remake (4%). Even the film’s light million budget isn t going to be recouped. The Top 10 And Beyond: The Call of the Wild Isn t Looking GoodThe Call of the Wild may actually be looking at more rotten returns than Brahms, but let’s at least start with a few positives. The new adaptation of Jack London’s classic novel with Harrison Ford opened to .8 million, higher than the -20 million projected for it. Among CGI dog movies, the number is not exactly Scooby-Doo (.15 million) or Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (.43 million), but it is still a higher opening than Eight Below (.18 million), which went on to gross over million when it opened in February of 2006. (Those numbers with inflation would be about .83 and 4.43 million today.) The problem is that The Call of the Wild’s budget has been reported as anywhere from 5-150 million. That is not far away from Dolittle, which began with .84 million and is up to million domestically and 4 million worldwide. Even if we split the difference on those budget numbers, The Call of the Wild is going to need to go north of 0 million to break even, and it s only made 10% of that worldwide in its opening weekend. This may not be Dark Phoenix bad, but it could still end up as one of the biggest losers in the long history of Fox not a great way to launch 20th Century Studios.Birds of Prey dropped another 59% this weekend to million, bringing its total up to .5 million. Last year’s Alita had less than Birds with .2 million but had a higher third weekend with .22 million. It finished with .7 million. That suggests Birds will finish somewhere between -92 million domestically. As of this weekend, after just another million overseas, it has grossed 3 million worldwide. It will need over 0 million just to break even.Sony’s Bad Boys for Life earned another .8 million, bringing its total up to 1.1 million after 38 days of release. That places it right in the middle of a group of films that includes World War Z, SPECTRE, The Mummy Returns, and Superman Returns, among others. What do they all have in common? Each got over the 0 million mark; Bad Boys’ global total is over 0 million. Sony’s Jumanji: The Next Level also continues to go strong, bringing its domestic total to 1 million and worldwide total to 7 million, while Fantasy Island  under the Blumhouse banner dropped 66% and is up over million. The films that were battling it out for Best Picture remain in the Top Ten, with Parasite drawing in another .2 million and bringing its total to nearly million, officially the fifth-highest grossing film not in the English language. It is less than million away from passing Hero for fourth place. Sam Mendes’ 1917 is also rising up a very specific chart, ranking up there with the highest-grossing films about war. Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper remains the chart-topper, while the next three films on the list are about the same war – Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor and Dunkirk. Now in fifth place with almost 2 million, 1917 can boast it is the highest-grossing film ever about WWI. That’s good news for Universal, still staring down the losses of Cats and Dolittle, and they can add The Photograph to that list, as it dropped a whopping 77% in its second weekend down to .8 million. With a total under million, that is not going to be near enough to recoup its million budget.Focus’ new remake of Jane Austen’s Emma. (87%) did not exactly break any records this week, but it can brag about having the current best per-theater-average of the young year. In five theaters this weekend, the film starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role grossed 0,000 for a ,000 PTA. Amazon’s Seberg (38%), which was pushed back from its original December release, grossed ,487 in three theaters, giving it the second best PTA of the year. In 357 theaters, Impractical Jokers: The Movie (57%) just missed the top ten, grossing .60 million, a PTA just behind Oscilloscope’s CatVideoFest2020, which grossed 0,150 in 30 theaters. Magnolia’s Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band (77%) had the third best PTA of the week with ,500 in four theaters. Neon’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire (98%) expanded to 130 theaters and grossed 5,000. Its total stands at .45 million.

anything I had read It was a period piece, but it felt very modern and had a very modern sense of thinking,” Steinfeld told Rotten Tomatoes recently in New York City. “To play this literary icon felt like an opportunity that I couldn t pass up.” (Photo by Apple TV+)Steinfeld s Emily has another intimate relationship with a guy named Death, whose smokey coolness is personified by rapper and singer Wiz Khalifa. Smith revealed that, in the series, Emily comes to have a more mature relationship with death when she loses someone close to her. In the beginning she is fantasizing that death will come and take her away from this life that s driving her crazy. In the end, she lived into her old age, so death didn t come for a long time, the series creator noted of the poet, who died at age 55. But we wanted whoever played Death to be kind of larger than life and to bring a sense of just incredible playfulness and wild coolness to the role, and I think Wiz was just the dream of who would do that. And then as soon as he read the script, he just really connected with the humor and the just the vibe of the show, and it was kind of amazing to me how easily he just slipped in to the whole thing. (Photo by Apple TV+)Considering she’s playing a young women who didn’t find literary fame until after her death, Steinfeld also relished the opportunity to explore Dickinson in a way that hadn’t been done before — to give voice to the young woman s thoughts and to act out the dark, fantastical elements of her poems in a way that’s not entirely expected. “I fortunately and unfortunately knew very, very little [about her] before this project. I loved that I could do my deep dive into her with the little facts that are known that are out there, but we got to dig even deeper and basically tell this story of what we think the inside of her mind might look like or feel like or sound like,” the one-time Oscar nominee said. (Photo by public domain image)“The whole fun of making this show was taking this person that had this unbelievable imagination, Steinfeld continued. I mean, you could make an entire series off of one poem, and we had all of these poems and it was so great to pull from that and from her imagination and sort of combine it with ours.”Smith was reading a biography of the poet when inspiration hit. I was so struck by, I guess, the ironies of her life and the fact that this woman was so passionate and fierce in writing almost 2,000 of the greatest, strangest poems ever written, but practically none of them were ever seen or appreciated or published while she lived, the series creator said. In our millennial era of everyone seeking attention for everything they do. There s something very inspiring in that story of Emily working in secret. (Photo by Apple TV+)More than just the story of a brilliant artist, the series specifically explores the limitations Dickinson would have encountered in the 1850s due to her gender and presents this as the main reason she was only taken seriously as a master poet posthumously. The series also relates that she was expected to marry and become a dutiful housewife, social norms that Emily of the series refuses. Gender parity — in everything from the pay gap to #MeToo and Time’s Up — is a conversation that continues today, particularly in creative fields and entertainment. Steinfeld could relate to Dickinson’s circumstances. “I think that there are so many themes in this show that are wildly similar to events that we go through today in life, especially women,” she said. “But I do think that this is a character who fought against every constraint. And I do find that as a young woman today, we re constantly fighting to be heard and understood. We have come a very long way and I m very thankful for that, but I think the show will sort of open a lot of people s eyes to the reality of what we re still dealing with.”(Photo by Apple TV+)These themes also appealed to 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Jane Krakowski, who here plays Emily’s domineering, by-the-book mother (also named Emily). “It had such parallels to today s young modern women, and that really surprised me,” she told Rotten Tomatoes, but for her role, she was the enforcer of such limiting expectations. “I think the parents represent the times, the world that we were living in, that patriarchal world.” Krakowski recounted how playing a stern-but-dutiful housewife herself isn’t exactly a glass-slipper fit. Her Mrs. Dickinson practically lives in the kitchen, an arena in which she’s not a natural. “First of all, this part was a real stretch for me because I can t cook anything in a kitchen,” Krakowski joked. “She is known as the greatest homemaker of Amherst, in all of New England. My friends who know me very well are like, ‘We can t believe 90 percent of your scenes are in a kitchen.’” Fortunately, she was up for the challenge, not only spending most of her time in the kitchen, but even getting down and dirty in the house work.“We did it so real. We actually were plucking those chickens…. It s really hard to get it off your fingers…. You weren t just a housemaid [back then], you weren t just dusting; you were going out and killing dinner and then bringing it inside. (Photo by Apple TV+)Dickinson seems primed for the Instagram-savvy generation, but more than a history lesson, Steinfeld hopes that it empowers viewers in the way it did for her while making it.  “I feel like I have this newfound fearlessness that I always knew was inside of me,” she said. “After playing this character, I feel like there s nothing wrong with saying what s on your mind and speaking your truth. I hope that young girls can see the show and feel that sense of fearlessness and bravery and wit and beauty that comes with doing what makes you feel good.”Dickinson season 1 is now available on Apple TV+.Like this? Ghcxuf (Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)The season 2 finale of The Mandalorian left fans with plenty of questions, but none were more pressing than a surprise announcement about something called “The Book of Boba Fett” would arrive in December 2021. Was it the next season of The Mandalorian, switching its focus from Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) to the infamous Star Wars bounty hunter? Or was it its own standalone series? Without a clarifying word from executive producer Jon Favreau or Lucasfilm, speculation ran high across the weekend of December 19, 2020 on the nature of Fett’s new story.Thankfully, Favreau appeared on Good Morning America during its Monday, December 21 airing to dispel some of the confusion regarding The Book. So let’s take a look at everything we know so far.[Updated on 9/29/21]It Is a Standalone Series(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)In our look at the Season 2 finale, we assumed The Book of Boba Fett was the next phase of The Mandalorian. No Boba Fett series was mentioned at Lucasfilm’s exhaustive Investor Day presentation of December 10 and the no logo appeared during the finale’s stinger scene indicating a new series. But as Favreau explained on GMA, the series was kept out of the presentation to maintain the surprise.Temuera Morrison stars as Boba Fett, the cloned son of Jango Fett (also Morrison), who may have a strong claim to being Mandalorian even if the heir apparent to that planet’s throne refuses to accept him. As seen in the Mandalorian stinger scene, it will focus on Fett taking over the criminal empire of Jabba the Hutt. And as Disney+ press release later clarified, he will use those assets to navigate the Galaxy’s underworld. (Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Joining him on this new journey will be Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), the mercenary he rescued in The Mandalorian’s first season. Seemingly indebted to him, if even by just her own code of ethics, the pair will continue on as Fett plans his next move. And if we might indulge in some speculation, we imagine the other bounty hunters from The Empire Strikes Back — Dengar, IG-88, Bossk, Zuckuss, and 4-LOM — may appear at some point. Also, there may be room to do an episode on Jodo Kast, the imposter Boba Fett who appeared in the Expanded Universe while Fett himself recuperated from his encounter with the Sarlaac.Come to think of it, revealing how he actually survived his seeming death scene in Return of the Jedi would make for a strong chapter as well. Also, you have to wonder how long before Fett’s actions in Jabba’s palace attracts the attention of Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant), other elements on Tatooine, or even the other Hutts. On the production side, Robert Rodriguez — who directed the episode re-introducing Boba Fett to The Mandalorian’s sector of space — will serve as executive producer with Favreau and stalwart Star Wars creative Dave Filoni. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy will also serve as an executive producer with long-time Star Wars veterans Karen Gilchrist and Carrie Beck taking co-executive producer roles. John Bartnicki will produce and John Hampian serves as co-producer.It Is Not a Replacement for The MandalorianAs Favreau clarified during his GMA appearance, The Book of Fett will come before the third season of The Mandalorian, but not replace it; in fact, Favreau said the third season will “pretty soon follow” The Book of Fett in terms of production. Whether or not this means the new season will immediately follow Fett in airing is anyone’s guess. It is rather clear, however, that there will be no Mandalorian in 2021.The year 2022 appears to be the big one for Star Wars on Disney+ with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor debuting alongside the third season of The Mandalorian. There is also the potential for at least one other live-action Star Wars project to join that group as well.It Is Part of the Post–Return of the Jedi Timeline(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Alongside the Ahsoka series, The Book of Boba Fett will take place in the era five or so years after Return of the Jedi. For lack of an official name, we’ll call it the New Republic era. In an echo to the early Expanded Universe novels, games, and comics, it is a time when the newly established Republic faces a lot of backlash from Imperial enclaves and plenty of internal tensions the Rebel Alliance set aside to combat the Empire. That issue will likely be covered more closely in Ahsoka or the third season of The Mandalorian, but it will also factor into Fett as organized crime is constant in the Star Wars galaxy, as is the central government s inability (or apathy) to police it. We’ll hazard a guess that a show more focused on scum and villainy made a standalone Fett series attractive to Favreau and Filoni as they devised the Mandalorian spinoffs — well, assuming the series is just about Fett becoming the godfather of space. As we’ve already seen, he is a man of his word, and it is possible the resources of the Hutt criminal enterprise could be utilized in some other goal. 😈😈
