In this special video series, we speak to the actors and filmmakers who made those moments happen, revealing behind-the-scenes details of how they came to be and diving deep into why they’ve stuck with us for so long. Once we’ve announced all 21, it will be up to you, the fans, to vote for which is the most memorable moment of all. In this episode of our ‘21 Most Memorable Moments’ series, director Danny Boyle recalls shooting London s loneliest landmarks and resurrecting zombies for a new century.VOTE FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR 21 MOST MEMORABLE MOVIE MOMENTS POLLThe Movie: 28 Days Later (2002) 87%28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle from an Alex Garland script about humans mutated into speedy zombies by virus infection, was an inflection point for horror movies. The underground hit made over million worldwide, and signaled a shift away from post-Scream teen slashers of the late 90s and earl 2000s, and showed studios that audiences all over have were seeking horror flicks that bit harder. The film was shot with digital cameras, just above consumer-level grade, giving survivor Jim (Cillian Murphy) and his journey across a newly deserted England a rush of post-apocalyptic immediacy. This was when shooting on film was still the norm, so grimy, tethered footage felt like a glimpse into a new world. And it was a horrific, and horrifically effective world that Boyle created.Danny Boyle on the set of 28 Days Later. (Photo by © Twentieth Century Fox) We made

0.64.2 2月喜迎Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Marvel s The Eternals, Ghostbusters, Scooby-Doo, and The Suicide Squad. This WEEK S TOP STORYIDRIS ELBA TO REPLACE WILL SMITH IN THE SUICIDE SQUAD(Photo by Michael Gibson/STX Entertainment)Last year, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn switched teams to join Warner Bros. and their DC Comics movies (following his forced departure from Disney and Marvel over controversial joke Tweets). WB hired Gunn to do something of a soft reboot on The Suicide Squad, and at first, it was reported that the second movie would feature an all-new team of supervillains. This week, we learned that detail is only partly true, as the characters of Harley Quinn and Deadshot will return, but the rest of the team will be new. Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn, but it won t be Will Smith we ll be seeing as Deadshot, as Idris Elba has signed on instead. Warner Bros. has scheduled The Suicide Squad for release on August 6, 2021, which will be one day over five years after the first Suicide Squad (8/5/2016). As for which DC Comics supervillains will be joining Deadshot and Harley Quinn in the sequel, Collider.com has what they report is the list. Reportedly, the new villains will include Ratcatcher (gender swapped as a woman), the eccentric Batman villain Polka Dot Man, Peacemaker (who was adapted as The Comedian in Alan Moore s Watchmen), and King Shark, who was a memorable character on TV s The Flash. As for what Will Smith will be doing with his free time in 2019 instead, he signed on this week to star in King Richard, which will tell the true story of tennis coach Richard Williams, the father of future tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams.Fresh Developments1. MARVEL S THE ETERNALS TO FEATURE FIRST LIVE-ACTION GAY LEAD SUPERHERO (BUT WHO?)(Photo by Marvel Comics)The last few years have seen a series of firsts in live action superhero movies: Wonder Woman, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel all represented important first steps (and the news of movies like Blue Beetle and Shang-Chi being developed represent others yet to come). As first reported by the ThatHashtagShow podcast, Marvel is now seeking a (preferably openly gay) actor aged 30-49 (of any ethnicity) who physically looks like a superhero for one of the leads in next year s The Eternals. The story seemed to be confirmed by Marvel production chief Victoria Alonso, who, when asked about it, replied, the world is ready. Marvel has not yet announced a release date for The Eternals, but it s probably the untitled project scheduled for November 6, 2020 (presuming Black Widow is the film scheduled for for May 1, 2020). As for which of The Eternals might be the gay character in question, of the three known leads, Ikaris would seem most likely, just by process of elimination (the other two confirmed leads being Sersi and the childlike Piper). Other possibilities include Makkari (based on Mercury), Thanos brother Starfox, and even Hercules (who s not one of the Eternals in the comics, but could be adapted that way for the MCU).2. GUILLERMO DEL TORO S SECRET ZANBATO ACTION MOVIE(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)A few months ago, Guillermo del Toro (Academy Award winner for The Shape of Water) revealed that he had over 15 screenplays written and ready to go. Included in that list was Secret Project (Untitled). Now, we still don t know for sure what that project is, but we did learn about a previously unknown film that has been in development for the past six years. The movie is called Zanbato, and although we re still missing many details, it s described as an action movie about a young girl (in the 10-15 year old range) with amazing fighting abilities like a ninja. Del Toro is attached not just to write but also to direct Zanbato for Paramount Pictures by way of J.J. Abrams Bad Robot as the production company. Meanwhile, del Toro is currently in pre-production on his adaptation of Pinocchio for Netflix.3. FINN WOLFHARD, CARRIE COON JOIN THE NEW GHOSTBUSTERS(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)It was less than two months ago that we learned that Sony Pictures is fast-tracking a new Ghostbusters to be directed by Jason Reitman (Juno, Tully, Up in the Air), the son of the first movie s director, Ivan Reitman. (Sony also gave us a quick teaser trailer to boot, featuring one of the franchise s most iconic props.) Two weeks later, Sony announced that the new Ghostbusters has been scheduled for release next summer for July 10, 2020. Many details aren t yet known, but the new film will be a direct sequel to the original film that does not use the continuity of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot. We can however now report that Carrie Coon (Avengers: Infinity War, TV s Fargo) and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) have been cast as a mother and son who are central to the new film. How their characters connect to the original Ghostbusters isn t yet known (this writer s best guess: Egon s daughter and grandson?).4. INVISIBLE MAN REBOOT BECOMING INVISIBLE WOMAN INSTEAD?(Photo by Take Five/Hulu)A couple of weeks before the release of the 2017 reboot of The Mummy, Universal Pictures made a big push to promote their Dark Universe made up of similar classic monster movies. And then The Mummy opened to disappointing box office numbers, and by the end of that year, Universal s plans for movies like Bride of Frankenstein (which would have come out February 14, 2019) were scrapped. Even if the Dark Universe doesn t happen, Universal still has a lot invested in these properties, and so some of them will still eventually get made. One of them was The Invisible Man, in which Johnny Depp would have starred. This week, it was confirmed that Depp has disappeared from the reboot, with Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid s Tale) now in early talks to star. Details aren t yet known (such as whether it would be called The Invisible Woman), except that Leigh Whannell (Upgrade, Insidious: Chapter 3) is now writing and will direct the reboot.5. THIS WEEK IN MECHA: METAL GEAR SOLID, GUNDAM, EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 (Photo by Nippon Sunrise courtesy Everett Collection)However one defines mecha, whether it be human-sized (like Iron Man) or gigantic (like those in Pacific Rim), mecha in Hollywood are still not as prevalent as they are in, say, Japanese anime. This week, however, we learned of development progress for three science fiction projects, all based on pre-existing material, which are likely to feature mecha. Let s start with the Metal Gear Solid movie, based on the popular and long-running Konami video game franchise. We ve known for a while now that it s something of a dream project for Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts, but this week, we learned which actor is most likely to star as Solid Snake: Oscar Isaac. No deal is in place just yet, but Isaac came right out and this week, Metal Gear Solid, that s the one I m throwing my hat in for that one, to which Vogt-Roberts seemed to give a positive response. Another mecha movie now in development is the sequel to 2014 s Edge of Tomorrow (with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt expected to return), which is now being worked on by one of the Monster Trucks co-writers. The mecha in Metal Gear Solid is a supporting element, and the mecha in Edge of Tomorrow are human-sized, but the third movie in the news this week is absolutely puts giant mecha front and center. Comic book (and LOST) writer Brian K. Vaughn is now working on an adaptation of the popular manga and anime series Gundam for Legendary Entertainment.
The CW’s Black Lightning has always been a world apart from its superhero cousins on the network. Originally developed as a show for Fox, it always took the concepts of superpowers and the DC Comics metahumans a metaphor for something much closer to our reality. Its inciting incident — the deployment of a vaccine said to prevent a virulent disease, but truly design to stimulate the metagenes in the population of Freeland — has its origins in things like the Tuskegee Study and the CIA’s alleged introduction of crack cocaine into the inner cities in the 1980s.In the world of Black Lightning, the meta-vaccine operation was conducted by a shadowy government agency known as the ASA, and their tactics have left a lasting mark on Freeland as a whole and central character Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) in particular. Even as the series sprawled out to tell the tales of Jefferson’s family, his arch-rival Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III), and Jefferson s mentor Peter Gambi (James Remar), it’s never lost sight of the ASA. In fact, it is possible they are Black Lightning’s ultimate adversaries. But at the moment, they also have Freeland in lockdown – an occupation officially meant to keep Freeland’s meta population safe from agents of a foreign power, Markovia, desperate to snatch up metas in a latter-day arms race. The story may echo the CIA’s activities during the later parts of the Cold War, but in illustrating the effects of an actual military occupation on U.S. soil, the show enters unprecedented ground. The stakes have never been higher. As Williams put it when Rotten Tomatoes visited the Atlanta soundstages where the show is produced, “It s much more than just corner boys and Tobias trying to just take over the city for his own power. In fact, we got the distinct impression Freeland’s old normal will never be restored. But, as Williams told us, “The ‘back to normal’ Freeland was never like this idealistic place It was always, you know, it was flawed. There was crime. It s why [Jefferson] had to originally put the suit back on in the first place.” Nonetheless, Williams felt it is important for the Occupation to end, even if “we get back to just that” because Freeland is ultimately part of the United States and rights are being trampled on in the current situation.Granted, the ASA Agent-in-Charge, Odell (Bill Duke), would disagree. When we spoke to Duke, he mentioned Odell firmly believes the Occupation is ultimately protecting Americans from a rogue nation. His methods, though, leave much to be desired. For instance, he kept both Jefferson and his wife, Dr. Lynn Stewart’s (Christine Adams) in a mandatory hold at a secret facility for months and once he had to let them go, he planted subliminal messages in Lynn s living space suggesting she experiment with Green Light, the power-enhancing drug taking the place for crack in the program’s ongoing storyline. When it was suggested manipulating Lynn was evil, Duke said, What really is evil?  It is a question the show is gearing up to address, but in the interim, Lynn is abusing Green Light.“You’re definitely going to see Lynn in a way you ve never seen her before,” Adams said of Lynn under the drug’s influence. Her first few attempts to synthesize a safe, non-addictive Green Light gave her increased brain efficiency and allowed her to find a cure for a Markovian virus meant to kill Freeland s meta population. But it’s also made her obsessive about her work and created another rift between her and Jefferson. Then again, the fragility of their marriage is another one of the show’s ongoing plots.“I think it definitely makes sense for their relationship to go like this,” Adams said. But she added the Occupation is putting a very specific stress on them. “They know too much. They ve seen too much. I mean, they would have to be PTSD if nothing else … like, put them all in therapy. That s what I would do.”Their time at The Pit, the ASA’s black site in Freeland, also put Black Lightning off his footing, but Williams suggested the change in outlook may ultimately be beneficial.“I think he s angrier, and I think he has the right to be,” he said. “Going from season 1, his school was successful, his daughters were safe, and then you progress to being locked up for over a month and then coming out to an occupation and nobody s safe. He s tried to do things the right way and play by the rules and sees the repercussions of that.”At the moment, an agreement with Odell means he cannot act against the ASA, but it is only a matter of time before he learns the full scope of the agent’s machinations and, perhaps, joins the Resistance. And then there’s Tobias. Though he is locked up in The Pit, Williams said that Jefferson’s feelings about Tobias haven t changed. The feeling is mutual. Though Jones was unwilling to suggest when or how Tobias might escape The Pit, he said Black Lightning is the only person who should worry if and when that prison break occurs.“I think it s always going to be Black Lightning,” he added, though he said another confrontation between Tobias and the unkillable Lala (William Catlett) is inevitable. “[They’re] almost like Kobe and Shaq, where they re on the same team, kind of, but then again they re not. You know? One has a way of doing things, and the other one doesn t. It s kind of like I need the other one to get out of the way so I can do my thing the way I do it. I think they ll always conflict and run into each other.”Jefferson and Lynn’s detention at The Pit also left their children Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) to figure out life in the Occupation on their own. Anissa chose to formalize her alternate persona of Blackbird as a hero of the burgeoning Resistance — and establish an underground railroad of sorts for metas trying to escape Freeland — while Jennifer tried her best to be a “normal” teenager.According to Nafessa Williams, Blackbird and Anissa’s earlier hero persona of Thunder represent two sides of the character.“[Blackbird] doesn t have it all together and she doesn t always do the right thing the way Thunder does, but she does it her way because she thinks it s the right way and she thinks it s what Freeland needs right now.”The impulsiveness of Blackbird may cause problems down the line – particularly with the Perdi in South Freeland – but Williams sees the alter-ego as part of Anissa coming into her own.“She s really seeing herself as an adult and realizing that she runs her life,” Williams said. Nevertheless, expect some mistakes as Anissa finds her way to adulthood. But one aspect of Anissa’s life that will be on firmer ground during the Occupation is her relationship with shapeshifter Grace Choi (Chantal Thuy) – a romance teased since the early episodes of the show, but finally a real thing in season 3.“I think Anissa is really happy to have found someone who understands her,” Williams said of the relationship. “She hasn t told anyone really who she is other than her family, so to be able to open up and trust someone else and let them in on who she really is and understand them for who they are, I think it s a match.”And, as it happens, Grace has also proved her abilities will aid Anissa in getting out of tight scrapes, like Odell’s ill-timed visit in last week’s episode.Jennifer, meanwhile, has acclimated to curfews, traffic stops, and the ASA’s stated mission a little too well. Bizarrely, the confines of the Occupation gave Jennifer an added sense of independence – something Odell hopes to utilize for his own ends.“He s counting on being able to take her humanity and use it,” McClain said. The shadowy agent has already helped her discover new powers which may indicate she is stronger than her father. Also, “[Odell’s] telling her, ‘Your father s wrong here, your father s methods aren t working. You know what I m saying? The stand-out episode of Netflix s latest horror hit The Haunting of Bly Manor draws inspiration from a Henry James short story that, according to series creator Mike Flanagan, had not previously been adapted.A follow-up to The Haunting of Hill House, the new series explores several tragic love stories as it follows American au pair Dani Clayton (Victoria Pedretti), who accepts a job in England looking after orphaned siblings Miles (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) and Flora (Amelie Bea Smith) while supernatural phenomena swirl around her. If the scenario sounds familiar, the season was primarily inspired by James much-adapted classic novella The Turn of the Screw. But other works by the iconic author add to the story layers that unfold at Bly.(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Episode 8 takes the same name as the previously overlooked James tale, The Romance of Certain Old Clothes,  and acts mostly as a standalone episode that detours to the 18th century to reveal the origin of Bly Manor s ghost story. Flanagan called it more aggressive and vicious than anything else Henry James ever wrote, during a virtual press conference for the series.Unlike his work with Hill House, Flanagan made a concerted effort to remove himself as the sole creative force behind every episode of Bly Manor. But for the season s penultimate episode of, he admits he did everything in his power to be on set every day. I was never more anxious to get to set just to sit at the monitor and watch than I was during episode 8, because it was so cool. It was the kind of episode I just wanted to see as a fan, Flanagan said. The Romance of Certain Old Clothes is a brooding gothic romance and tragic love song to the genre, with visual storytelling to make fans of classic horror cinema rejoice. The episode is the most haunting hour of TV you ll see this year. Here s why.SPOILER ALERT: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS DETAILS ABOUT EPISODE 8 OF THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR. STOP HERE IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THE EPISODE.It Gives a Heartbreaking Backstory to Bly Manor s Curse(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Flanagan said he had planned to explore the origins of Hill House’s hauntings, but that production didn t have the budget or time to see its backstory brought to life. After the series remarkable reception on Netflix, however, Flanagan clearly had more flexibility for his next The Haunting series.Episode 8 throws us way back in time to recount the lives of Viola (Kate Siegel) and Perdita (Katie Parker), sisters left with an uncertain future in the manor after their father passes away. Practical Viola marries her distant cousin Arthur, heir to the manor (since it was illegal for women to inherit property).A true romance blossoms between the two, and soon their daughter Isabel is born. But, as with most gothic romances, the story takes a tragic turn, and Viola falls ill with tuberculosis. While Viola is locked away in a room, coughing up blood, romance between Arthur and Perdita develops and tensions rise between the sisters. One day, it all comes to a head, and Perdita murders Viola in her bed.(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Perdita marries Arthur, of course, and the two raise Isabel, but financial struggles leave the couple s relationship strained. Perdita wants to sell Viola s fine jewelry and clothes that are locked away in a chest in the attic, but Arthur refuses. He made a promise to Viola that Isabel would receive those treasures once she was of age. But Perdita goes against his wishes and opens the truck, and Viola s enraged spirit chokes her sister to death. After Arthur finds Perdita dead, he deduces that the trunk is cursed and throws it into the lake, before taking Isabel and moving far away from Bly Manor. The sisters ghosts remain stuck to the property, however, to form the haunting foundation that the rest of the season s unfortunate events are built upon.Like Episode 6 of The Haunting of Hill House, This One Is a Standout(Photo by Steve Dietl/Netflix (The Haunting of Hill House)) The Romance of Certain Old Clothes holds just as much importance to the Haunting franchise as Hill House s sixth episode, Two Storms, did two years ago. This episode doesn t come with all the bells and whistles that made Two Storms such a milestone — you won t find any 18-minute-long tracking shots here and that episode focused on the generational trauma that permeated the Crain family, both in their present and in their past. It was a poignant exploration of grief that relied on some dazzling camera work and blocking to tie everything together.(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Bly Manor is a different beast — at its core, even more of a ghost story than Hill House’s exploration of family trauma. Carla Gugino s narrator figures prominently in this episode, and her comforting diction, along with the detailed set dressing, intricate costume design, and the guidance of up-and-coming director Axelle Carolyn — who Flanagan calls a student of black-and-white horror cinema — The Romance of Certain Old Clothes delivers the context that connects the past and present of the series. Everybody was always looking at episode 8 as our chance to do what we love the most, Flanagan admits. It s what made us want to do The Haunting and to look back at [director] Robert Wise and [director of The Innocents] Jack Clayton. These incredibly influential movies from the early ’60s, which were done so perfectly, they ve rendered it pointless to try to do a faithful feature adaptation of these texts. So it was one of those episodes, much like episode 6 in season 1, that we were preparing for and building up to the entire time. We shot it last. Kate Siegel s Lady of the Lake Is the Terrifying Key to Bly Manor s Mysteries(Photo by Netflix)The episode s timeline charges forward once Viola dies, showing the manor succumbing to decay and plague victims taking shelter under its roof. Throughout, Viola s ghost is anchored to that chest underwater, her afterlife focused on reunification with her daughter.Viola emerges from the water nightly to roam the grounds, eventually losing her face as the memory of who she was fades. When she disappears entirely, the monstrous Lady of the Lake emerges. The faceless being we see earlier in the season kills without remorse, taking out anyone who gets in her path as she makes her way up to the manor s bedroom, looking for young Isabel.

Yet while this collection of essential Aussie horror flicks does contain several of those Down Under biters – two crocodile movies, one shark movie, and one about a giant wild boar (didn t see that coming, did ya?!) – it also features works that tap into something just as threatening: the vast land itself, from the mystery of its desert center to the dark possibilities of its cities sprawling suburbs. Movies like Wolf Creek and Road Games play with our anxiety about who, and what, we might encounter dare we venture into the endless Outback, while Hounds of Love and The Babadook explore what might lie behind your neighbor s door.Recent international breakouts like Jennifer Kent s Babadook and Natalie Erika James atmospheric haunted house chiller Relic traffic in the slow-building dread of today s elevated horror, but Australian genre films have been largely marked by a certain hard brutality over the years. Consider Wolf Creek and its sequel, or the more recent Killing Ground, which tell ripped-from-the-headlines slasher tales of terrorized backpackers and campers, but do so with an almost merciless insistence on graphic, real-feeling violence. And while we re talking brutal, check out The Loved Ones, a darkly comic tale of obsession that found new ways to drill into the torture porn trend of the 2000s.To be included in the list, movies had to be made and set in Australia, by a predominantly Australian crew. They also had to have more than 10 reviews – which is why the great maybe-horror Bad Boy Bubby, with only nine Tomatometer-approved reviews, didn t make the cut; ditto the excellent anthology Dark Place. We then culled the selection down to the 20 highest-rated movies, which included a couple of Rotten-but-fun (Bait) or seminal flicks (Patrick), and even a Jamie Lee Curtis sort-of-slasher. (Yes, Curtis s Final Girl phase even took her to entirely different hemispheres.) Purists may quibble with the choice to include Phillip Noyce s Dead Calm, a twisty and taut three-hander with Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman, and Billy Zane – it s not horror in the traditional sense, perhaps, but it will have you squirming. As will Justin Kurzel s The Snowtown Murders (released as just Snowtown in Australia), a crime drama with grisly horror elements you won t soon forget. Take shots at us in the comments if you must, but won t regret watching them. With all that said, here are the 20 highest-rated Australian horror films, according to the Tomatometer.Best Spanish-Language Horror Movies | Best Korean Horror Movies | Best Italian Horror Movies | Best French Horror Movies | Best Japanese Horror Movies2020’s Best Horror Movies | 200 Best Horror Movies Ever
The new CBS series Clarice finds us following FBI agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) in her post-Hannibal Lecter career. And it will find the agent dealing with the aftermath of her experiences from the stories film fans will know. “One of the things I really love about Clarice is she’s succeeding in her workplace and as a young woman, and she’s having to sort out her mental health while she’s doing that,” showrunner and executive producer Elizabeth Klaviter told Rotten Tomatoes.Premieres February 11, 2021, on CBS. Old (2021) Night Shyamalan told Rotten Tomatoes that when his daughter gave him a copy of Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters’ graphic novel Sandcastle, he read it and couldn’t stop thinking about it once he put it down. It stuck so much that he began to develop a film project inspired by the novel which would become Old, released by Universal this July. The Super Bowl gave us our first look at the mysterious film with a tense TV spot that showcased co-stars Gael García Bernal, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, Alex Wolff, and more. The graphic novel focuses on a group of people who find themselves unable to leave a strange and secluded beach that – we soon discover – hides a terrifying secret: those gathered are ageing at a rapid pace.In theaters July 23, 2021. Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) Disney offered another look at its new animated epic, Raya and the Last Dragon, the first film from the animation giant set in Southeast Asia. The movie follows the journey of Raya (Kelly Marie Tran), as she endeavors to find the last dragon (Awkwafina) and fend off an evil that has returned to her land of Kumandra after centuries. Raya and the Last Dragon, like Mulan and Soul, will be available via Premiere Access on Disney+ for .99 (in the U.S.), but will also show in select theaters where they are open and safe.In select theaters and available on Premiere Access for Disney+ from March 5, 2021. Nobody (2021) Give me the kitty cat bracelet! : That s the sound of Bob Odenkirk making a play for mother-bleeping snakes on a mother-bleeping plane iconic-line glory in the new trailer for Universal s Nobody, a revenge thriller about a mild-mannered suburban dad whose inner ass-kicker is ignited after a break-in at his home. The movie has serious action-flick cred: it s directed by Hardcore Henry s Ilya Naishuller and written by Derek Kolstad, who is one of the major brains behind the John Wick movies. The story itself sprung from an idea Odenkirk himself had following break-ins at his own home.In theaters April 2, 2021.Yellowstone: 1883Yellowstone creator and writer of Hell or High Water Taylor Sheridan just signed a major new deal with ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment group off the back of Yellowstone s success. No surprise then that the first big project announced as part of the deal is a prequel series to Yellowstone called Y: 1883, which according to a press release follows the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plans toward the last bastion of untamed America. Coming to Paramount+. F9 The Fast Saga (2021) It s been all quiet on the Fast front for some time, with the ninth film in the franchise delayed several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But today we got another look at F9, which sees director Justin Lin – who breathed new life into the Furious films directing the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth movies – returning for helming duties. The movie, which promises to crank it all the way up, features John Cena and Cardi-B, and sees Helen Mirren, Charlize Theron, and Sung Kang returning. In theaters soon. What was your favorite movie, TV, or streaming trailer from this year s Super Bowl? Trust us when we say that Better Call Saul’s Saul Goodman, Kidding’s Mr. Pickles, Homeland’s Carrie Mathison, or Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Jake Piralta go down as easy as a box of chocolates. Or if you’re more into beards and other kinds of treats, High Maintenance’s delivery guy might be more your speed. Regardless, this month has 10 returning series worth your time and your bingeing. Manhunt 96% (Spectrum Originals)What it is: When it first premiered on Discovery in 2017, creators Andrew Sodroski, Jim Clemente, and Tony Gittelson’s Manhunt promised a factual, fuss-free deep-dive on the FBI’s investigation and ongoing search for the terrorist Ted Kaczynski (a.k.a. the Unabomber). What we got was absolutely engrossing cat-and-mouse action with little-known, truth-is-stranger-than-fiction twists along the way.Why you should watch it: Having switched from Discovery to Spectrum Originals’ streaming platform, the new installment of Manhunt again follows the FBI, this time as they search for the bomber behind the 1996 Atlanta Olympics attack and deal with the notorious controversy surrounding security guard Richard Jewell that followed. (Clint Eastwood s 2019 feature film Richard Jewell dealt with the same topic.) Season 2 premieres on February 3 on Spectrum.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Microsoft, Netflix, VuduCommitment: Approx. 6 hours (for the first season)Brooklyn Nine-Nine 95% (NBC)What it is: This hit comedy series from creators Dan Goor and Michael Schur is a workplace sitcom featuring some very distinct personalities — the aloof and gregarious Detective Jake Peralta (Saturday Night Live alum Andy Samberg), his fictional precinct’s dry commanding officer, Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher), and the rest of the motley crew of the Nine-Nine.Why you should watch it: We’ve seen fan-initiated primetime resuscitations before, but rarely do they happen as swiftly as Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s after its unceremonious cancellation at Fox. The online outcry had barely begun before Universal Television began shopping the sitcom around, and it was scooped up by NBC just a day later — with good reason. Now that we’re a season into that “reboot,” it’s clear the series should’ve never left in the first place. Season 7 premieres on February 6 on NBC.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 47 hours (for the first six seasons)The Sinner 90% (USA Network)What it is: This anthological crime thriller from creator and showrunner Derek Simonds (and executive producer Jessica Biel, who starred on season 1 and earned her first Emmy nomination for the performance) takes the traditional whodunit thriller and turns it on its head into a whydunit. We know the titular culprit from the get, but there are unknown layers as to why they committed the central crime. The series has been a huge hit for USA Network and follows different crimes each season. Detective Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) is the thread that holds them all together. Why you should watch it: The Sinner is a spin on a classic trope, and it’s executed with top-notch acting, production, and nail-biting scripts. What’s not to love? Season 3 follows Matt Bomer and Chris Messina as college buddies with a dark, secretive past. A fatal tragedy upon their reunion brings Ambrose on the case. Catch up before its February 6 premiere.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Microsoft, Netflix, VuduCommitment: Approx. 12 hours (for the first two seasons)High Maintenance 98% (HBO)What it is: From co-creators Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair, High Maintenance began as a hit web series starring Sinclair as a traveling weed deliveryman living in New York City. HBO picked it up to series in 2016 and largely retained the comedy’s original format while simply making its episodes longer. Why you should watch it: While there are plenty of primetime programs that paint a great snippet of present-day NYC, few get the full picture the way High Maintenance does. That’s because each episode features various characters who — whether they’re hosting a swingers party, rebelling against their ultra-religious parents, or sitting home alone collecting cans of La Croix — are from such disparate walks of life that they end up inadvertently highlighting the similarities between so many dwellers of the concrete jungle. (And we promise those similarities go beyond enjoying the green.) Season 4 premieres on February 7 on HBO.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, HBO Now, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 12.5 hours (for the first three seasons)Homeland 85% (Showtime)What it is: Homeland has gone a lot of places — some better than others — over the course of its twisty seven seasons, but it all started with the Emmy-winning combination of Sgt. Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) and CIA agent Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes). The former has just returned from Iraq after being missing in action; the latter suspects that his allegiances have been turned to the enemy. Let the cat-and-mouse games begin. Why you should watch it: Homeland — led by a career-best Danes as an agent with bipolar disorder — is a masterclass in taut, edge-of-your-seat spy drama. Even when the series goes off the deep end, Danes has you simultaneously rooting for her and holding your breath. Season 8 premieres on February 9 on Showtime.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 60 hours (for the first seven seasons)Kidding 88% (Showtime)What it is: Kidding follows a Mr. Rogers–esque children’s show host named Mr. Pickles through a divorce and into a downward, existential spiral. But at its heart, it’s just about a kindhearted guy trying to find himself while piecing his life back together. Why you should watch it: Something about filmmaker Michel Gondry and star Jim Carrey’s creative relationship sparks magic; Kidding doesn’t just mark a grand reunion of the two artists after 15 years, but it features Carrey’s best dramatically-tinged performance since their shared Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Add in the auteur’s trademark visual flare, and Kidding will win just about anyone over. Season 2 premieres February 9 on Showtime.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNow, Google Play, MicrosoftCommitment: Approx. 5 hours (for the first season)Narcos 89% and Narcos: Mexico 85% (Netflix)What it is: Critically-acclaimed Spanish- and English-language Netflix original started with Narcos, taking a closer look at formidable and feared Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar (played by Wagner Moura) and his criminal contemporaries. In 2018, Netflix launched companion series Narcos: Mexico – originally intended as season 4 of the original show – which dove into the roots of the modern drug war and the true-story rise of the cocaine trade led by the Guadalajara cartel in the 1980s. Why you should watch it: The Narcos franchise is riveting and entertaining television, boasting fine performances and equally engaging scripts — not to mention a little-seen precision in documenting the history of the drug trade that still plagues the world today. In the Mexico seasons, Michael Peña stars as DEA agent Kiki Camarena alongside Diego Luna as cartel leader Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo. Narcos: Mexico season 2 premieres February 13 on Netflix.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 35 hours (25.8 for three seasons of Narcos and 8.5 hours for season 1 of Narcos: Mexico)Outlander 89% (Starz)What it is: Based on the hit fantasy novel series from author Diana Gabaldon, Outlander is the story of World War II nurse Claire (Caitriona Balfe), who is inexplicably transported back in time to 18th-century Scotland and quickly swept up in the drama and romance of Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) — despite being a married woman in her own time to Frank (Tobias Menzies). Why you should watch it: There’s little to dislike about this lavish Starz series. Expertly-crafted performances and, ahem, titillating character arcs have consumed audiences in the kind of “who will she choose” debate unseen since Twi-hards of yore. This series, from Battlestar Galactica reboot mastermind Ronald D. Moore, has the scripts, direction, and overall production value worth fawning over, too. Season 5 premieres on February 16 on Starz.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Microsoft, Netflix, VuduCommitment: Approx. 55 hours (for the first four seasons)Better Call Saul 98% (AMC)What it is: Ever wonder how, exactly, Breaking Bad’s Saul Goodman got to be so darn slimy? AMC’s acclaimed spin-off, Better Call Saul, is here to help. The companion series satisfyingly builds on the original Vince Gilligan drama, while also coherently etching an identity of its own for viewers of all proclivities. Why you should watch it: The series takes a character we think we know — the Saul Goodman whom Breaking Bad’s Walter White eventually meets in that Albuquerque, New Mexico, strip mall — and breaks him down to his nuts and bolts, starting at Jimmy McGill. Played wonderfully by Bob Odenkirk in what could become his career-defining (certainly career-changing) role, Saul/Jimmy and his uneasy partnership with Jonathan Banks’ Mike Ehrmantraut make for must-watch hours for any lover of prestige TV, Breaking Bad die-hard or not. Season 5 premieres on February 23 on AMC.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, Microsoft, Netflix, VuduCommitment: Approx. 32 hours (for the first four seasons)Altered Carbon 75% (Netflix)What it is: Altered Carbon is a sci-fi epic for our time: it s often brutal and sometimes confusing. Set in a distant dystopian future in which an individual’s consciousness can be downloaded and stored digitally to be later uploaded into a new body, otherwise known as a “sleeve, life and death have little meaning in this world. But this advancement in technology allows only an elite and wealthy few to actually live their lives for hundreds of years, while those less fortunate only degrade, descending further and further into destitution. Why you should watch it: This Netflix adaptation of Richard K. Morgan’s acclaimed 2002 novel from creator Laeta Kalogridis received mixed reviews upon its 2018 premiere, but was a hit with genre fans new and old alike. While Joel Kinnaman was absolutely killer as the latest incarnation of the mysterious time-jumping hero Takeshi Kovacs, these new episodes give Takeshi Kovacs a new sleeve: Anthony Mackie. Season 2 premieres on February 27 on Netflix.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 8.5 hours (for the first season)Babylon Berlin (Netflix)What it is: A sexy look at a turbulent time, Babylon Berlin is a crime drama that unfolds during the Weimar Republic, a time of great transition and facing the rise of National Socialism. Party girl Greta (Liv Lisa Fries) pairs up with police detective Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) when he uncovers and investigates an underground porn ring. Why you should watch it: Netflix brought the first two seasons of the lavish German series to U.S. audiences in 2017. Together, the seasons are Certified Fresh at 100% for painting a head-spinning tableau of corruption, drug dealing, and weapons trafficking that tests the young inspector s sense of loyalty and dedication to the truth. Season 3 launches on February 28 on Netflix.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 12 hoursLike this? Have The Markovians Been the Real Problem All Along?Just ahead of Black Lightning’s first season debut, executive producer Salim Akil suggested the story would slowly expose the real corruption in Freeland. So far, we’ve gone from The 100 gang as pushers of a metahuman street drug, the ASA as a government agency responsible for developing the drug after a history of experimenting with a vaccine to keep the predominately black populace docile, and the suggestion that a metahuman conflict has been brewing between the US and the Eastern European nation of Markovia for decades. The country, which debuted in a 1983 Brave and the Bold issue, has strong ties to Black Lightning via the early ’80s Batman and the Outsiders comic book. Both Black Lighting and the prince of Markovia, an earth-bending hero known as Geo-Force, served on the team. The country’s political climate, which often veered toward an authoritarian bent, often became the focus of Outsiders missions. Most recently, the country was seen in the DC Universe series Young Justice: Outsiders as a hotbed of metahuman trafficking and experimentation. It is an interpretation which tracks with the Markovia teased so far on Black Lightning. But is it possible Markovia’s ties in Freeland are deeper than we know? While The 100 deal in Greenlight, the ASA is not their supplier – Agent Odell (Bill Duke) is more interested in the kids from the original 1980s operation in the stasis pods – which means they are either cooking the drug themselves or getting it from a well-financed source. Considering the Markovian interest in collecting metas as weapons for a future war, they would certainly want to make sure as many underprivileged Freeland kids as possible become powered assets they can later co-opt.Of course, that assumes Tobias was working the Markovian agents from both sides he planed to sell the Masters of Disaster and the other Pod Kids on the dark web arms market and not just making Greenlight himself. But considering the amount of connective tissue Black Lightning skips in regards to The 100’s operations and Tobias s direct involvement in them, The Markovian Connection is a strong possibility. It also tracks with Akil’s overall metaphor. Outside of the Pierce family, superpowers have been analogous with drug use. In the first season, the show made pretty strong allusions to the introduction of crack cocaine by the CIA in the 1980s. During the first year, it seemed the ASA would be more directly linked to The 100 and continue that allusion, but perhaps Akil’s greater point was always about a foreign power. Then again, the executive producer’s personal problems — he allegedly engaged in a 10-year abusive relationship with actor Amber Dixon Brenner and stole her script; re-purposing it into the OWN series Love Is — may eventually prevent his Black Lightning plan from coming to fruition. How Long Has Odell Been Reviving Kahlil?(Photo by Annette Brown/The CW)During the final montage in the second season finale, the viewer can clearly see Khalil (Jordan Calloway) encased in one of the stasis pods back at the ASA bunker. In the scene, Odell looks at his prized Pod Kids with considerable interest. While it is clear he has a plan for Khalil, we wonder how long he waited before digging the poor kid out of the ground.Since resurrection is a fairly easy thing on this show – just ask Lala – all that remains to be known is the timetable for Khalil’s return. As it happens, timelines area tricky thing on Black Lightning with large gaps in the story occurring constantly and new ideas paying off before they are really set-up (i.e. Lala s quest for revenge). While the show locked itself into a pretty clear timeline for “The Book of Rebellion across the winter break, everything following Khalil’s funeral happens across an imprecise span of weeks or months. Did Odell wait until he was sure Jennifer or Khalil’s mother wouldn’t be holding a vigil over the tombstone, or did he devise some late light grave robbing?Another issue is the nature of resurrection itself. It took Lady Eve’s bizarre undertaker Lazarus (Michael Wright) almost a year to regenerate Lala from a clump of flesh. Presuming Odell is using a similar method – if not employing Lazarus outright – is Khalil fully healed and just in suspended animation or is there more work necessary to revive him? In fact, if Odell is using Lazaurs, will Khalil face the same sort of pain Lala endures every time he comes back? What Is Grace Choi?(Photo by Carin Baer/The CW)Since right around the time the show debuted, it has teased comic book fans with Grace Choi (Chantal Thuy). She made a few early appearances before Anissa s (Nafessa Williams) journey to become Thunder dominated her part of season 1. In the second season, Grace’s absence – or, more to the point, Anissa’s neglect of her – became a story point and the two were once again taking tentative steps to becoming a couple. Then, over a handful of scenes dispersed across the last few episodes of season 2, we learned Grace Choi was not her real name and that she i

Bad Boys for Life, which is not helmed by Bay but reunites stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, is receiving rave reviews for a number of reasons, including its injection of heart into a 25-year-old franchise with a long-delayed second sequel. Smith and Lawrence’s chemistry, some thrilling spectacle, and a lot of laughs don’t hurt, either. In fact, this third helping is supposedly so good, you’ll want fourths. Here’s what critics are saying about Bad Boys for Life:Isn t this just a cash grab?Bad Boys for Life is a welcome surprise that shows a series willing to change with the times.  Matt Goldberg, ColliderThis second sequel sincerely asks viewers to care about the inner lives of these two emotionally stunted cops… [and] it somehow pulls it off? Evan Dossey, Midwest Film JournalBad Boys for Life careens into sheer stupidity in the final act, with a twist that would be unforgivable if not for the opportunity it affords Lawrence to deliver some of the film’s best jokes. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewBad Boys for Life does feel a bit long and there is a late out-of-nowhere plot twist that feels a little far-fetched even for these movies. Brian Truitt, USA Today(Photo by Columbia Pictures)Do Smith and Lawrence still have chemistry? It’s impressive and enjoyable to behold how easily Smith and Lawrence slide back into these characters and actually make them more accessible and fun to be around than before. Todd McCarthy, Hollywood ReporterIt’s always been about their friendship, and their love for one another. In every scene, every joke, and every insult, you feel that warmth shine through with the intensity of a lens flare. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsThese actors just click… The two actors with comedic backgrounds maintain a razor-sharp rapport that helps Bad Boys For Life sizzle in between its explosive action sequences. Sean O Connell, CinemaBlendOne would think that chemistry might have diminished somewhat in the 17 years since the duo last teamed up, but if anything, it feels as though it’s gotten stronger. Brent Hankins, The Lamplight ReviewIf Bob Hope and Bing Crosby had a grenade launcher, it would end up a little like this. Jordan Hoffman, The GuardianAre there any notable additions to the cast?Paola Núñez [is] a commanding presence from the first time she enters the frame, and that electric new blood trickles down to the rest of her team. David Ehrlich, IndieWireOf the newcomers, only Núñez and [Alexander] Ludwig have any pizzazz. Jordan Hoffman, The GuardianDo we miss Michael Bay?Purists will probably balk at the notion of a Bad Boys without Bay — until they see it. Matt Singer, ScreenCrushAdil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah successfully mimic his style (sometimes doing shot-for-shot tributes) while also showing off their own chops. Sean O Connell, CinemaBlendThe signature Bayhem is so prominent during the third act that one could assume he was directing the film! Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesMichael Bay is not missed. Todd McCarthy, Hollywood ReporterWhat’s lost in the exchange is that Bay often felt like the third lead in these films… his affinity for Miami-via-Hot Wheels is notably absent here, and is frankly missed. Conor O Donnell, The Film Stage(Photo by Columbia Pictures)How is the action? It feels more inspired by Asian action cinema than Bay’s oeuvre, but the stylistic shift is subtle enough that it’s in keeping with the old while still kicking ass like something new. Leigh Monson, Birth.Movies.DeathIn the rare instances when the action does erupt into genuine spectacle, the directors make sure to prioritize function over flashiness in a way that prevents your eyes from glazing over. David Ehrlich, IndieWireFallah and El Arbi’s biggest skill? Shooting car chases… Bad Boys For Life has some of the coolest-looking car scenes in recent memory. Sean O Connell, CinemaBlendIt’s… gleefully, almost cartoonishly violent — piling up bodies as casually as Call of Duty, and letting the camera linger while they bleed. Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment WeeklyGreen screen adjacent motorcycle chases and digitally rendered flames can’t help but feel a bit tame after watching Bay demolish a Florida estate in a recklessly wanton firefight. Conor O Donnell, The Film StageAre there any good action sequences? No, not really. Evan Dossey, Midwest Film JournalIs it funny?Bad Boys for Life is not only intense, it’s hilarious. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsThere are a lot of we are old jokes, but I found a lot of this endearing. Mike Ryan, UproxxIt’s funny as hell. Leigh Monson, Birth.Movies.Death(Photo by Columbia Pictures)Are there any major criticisms? The only point where Bad Boys for Life starts to go off the rails is when it starts to follow Fast Furious too closely in hopes for setting up future installments. Matt Goldberg, ColliderThe tonal mixture just doesn’t quite work, resulting in the worst thing a Bad Boys film can be: generic. Evan Dossey, Midwest Film JournalI just wish the writers had avoided the layers of stereotypes they placed on our main Big Bad, Isabel Aretas. We’re talking stereotypes in stereo. Sherin Nicole, idobi.comAre we going to want more Bad Boys after this?I have never for one second cared whether they made a third film. Now that it’s here, I find myself genuinely shocked to announce I kind of want a fourth. Matt Singer, ScreenCrushFor the first time, yes, I hope some more Bad Boys come for me. Mike Ryan, UproxxThere’s a scene that teases a potential continuation of the story on screen here. And after sitting through this one, it was more of a promise than a threat. Sean O Connell, CinemaBlendOverall, Bad Boys for Life is probably a wash, but it ends so well that I now find myself not entirely opposed to the idea of a fourth Bad Boys entry. Bilge Ebiri, VultureSmith and Lawrence are good enough to make these movies work for a very long time. Sherin Nicole, idobi.comBad Boys for Life opens everywhere on January 17.
