环球国际采用百度引擎9(Baidu 4)Alita: Battle Angel (2019) 61% Rating: PG-13, for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for some language. It may look colorful and lively, and the main character may seem inviting with her wide, inquisitive eyes. But Alita: Battle Angel is really quite violent and not meant for young viewers. Fans of the manga series that inspired the movie probably won’t be surprised to learn that. And granted, much of the graphic violence happens to cyborgs who bleed blue, but still – they’re imbued with human characteristics, and we’re meant to care about them as such. So when they get stabbed or sliced in half or dismembered entirely, the imagery can be shocking. The visual effects and elaborate action sequences in the film from director Robert Rodriguez and writer-producer James Cameron are really the main reason to see Alita – that, and the game, physical performance from Rosa Salazar as the title character. She’s an abandoned cyborg whom a doctor (Christoph Waltz) brings back to life in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic society. But she can’t remember who she was; she only knows she has formidable warrior instincts and abilities that make her both powerful and a target. Alita also takes part in a Rollerball-type game that’s fast-paced and treacherous. She’s basically in constant peril. Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, and Jackie Earle Haley are among the impressive supporting cast. I didn’t bring my 9-year-old son with me to the Alita screening I attended, and I was glad afterward. It’s a big, mindless spectacle, but it really earns its PG-13 rating.

As The Mandalorian nears the end of its second season, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) must make a difficult choice in his attempt to rescue Grogu. In doing so, he also offers an unlikely opportunity for a former foe. While not as focused on the larger universe as recent episodes, this week once again proved The Mandalorian is more than capable of telling its own tales on its own terms. So let s dive into Chapter 15: The Believer and discover why writer/director Rick Famuyiwa is overdo for his own Star Wars story. The following contains spoilers about The Mandalorian, season 2, episode 7, “Chapter 15: The Believer.” Stop here if you have not watched the episode.Last Week, Grogu Was Baby Yoda–napped(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Arriving on Tython so Grogu can use Jedi temple ruins to contact a Jedi willing to train him, Djarin encountered Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). Fett s main concern is the recovery of the armor Djarin took from Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) and offered to protect the child in exchange for it. Sadly, Fett and Shand s help was not enough to prevent the Imperial Remnant from abducting Grogu. Djarin quickly formed a plan to save him, but it requires the assistance of former Imperial sharpshooter, Mayfeld (Bill Burr).Din Djarin and His Accomplices Use Deadly Force To Hunt Moff Gideon(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Instead of the prison break last week s episode appeared to tease, Cara Dune (Gina Carano) uses her authority as a New Republic Marshal to secure Mayfeld s release into her custody. As part of Djarin s plan, Mayfeld needs to use his knowledge of Imperial codes and procedures to ascertain the coordinates of Moff Gideon s (Giancarlo Esposito) light cruiser. Once he hears Grogu s life is in the balance, Mayfeld agrees to assist. Needing direct access to an Imperial terminal, he suggests setting course for the secret mining operation on Morak.Once on the planet, Hess and Djarin disguise themselves as Shoretroopers to infiltrate a refinery for highly-volatile mineral rhydonium. When attempting to access an Imperial network in the mess hall with the terminal, Mayfeld backs out after noting Valin Hess (Richard Brake) among the officers. The two have history. Desperate to find Grogu, Djarin removes his helmet so the terminal can complete a facial scan. Unfortunately, all of their mucking about attracts the attention of Hess, but the Imperial officer only wants to congratulate them, as they were the only transport team to make it back to base. Things turn sour when Mayfeld darkly reminisces about the Burnin Konn engagement of Operation: Cinder, a mission which led to the deaths of roughly 10,000 troopers. When Hess dismisses the losses, Mayfeld shoots him.The resulting firefight leads to Hess and Djarin s escape, thanks to timely assists by Dune, Shand, and Fett. Djarin recovers his armor and Dune decides to let Mayfeld go after seeing him hit one of the rhydonium transports from the Slave I hatch and blowing up the entire Imperial base.Leaving Mayfeld on Morak, Djarin sends a message to Gideon declaring war.A Change of a Hardened Heart Suggests Imperial Goons Are Not All Created Equally(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Mayfeld s reappearance here is a surprising change from his more villainous debut last season in Chapter 6, The Prisoner — also directed by Famuyiwa. It is, nevertheless, a welcome change as Mayfeld shows a hidden depth under his quips. Concern for the loss of life is not a quality the Empire or the Remnant values, and this growing concern was clearly a key reason Mayfeld walked away from the Imps after Burnin Konn.As it happens, Operation: Cinder was part of Sheev Palaptine s contingency plan to cripple the galaxy — Rebels and Imperials alike — should he ever perish. While on its face, it was meant to bring ecological devastation to world like Naboo and Burnin Konn, the high casualty counts were also part of the design. It is doubtful Hess or Mayfeld knew the real reasons for the operation, though, or the other aspects of Palpatine s plan, the retreat of certain Imperial forces to the Unknown Regions.Nevertheless, their reactions here illustrates a distinct difference in character. Hess is a true believer in the Empire s definition of order, while Mayfeld was probably a conditional Imp at best. As seen in Solo: A Star Wars Story and intimated by Luke Skywalker s desire to leave Tatooine, people joined the Imperial military because they are out of options. Typically, the training crushes a person s spirit and turns them into loyal goons like Hess, but sometimes a moral center survives. It is clearly the point of Famuyiwa s script as Mayfeld proved to be more honorable than the other characters he introduced in Chapter 6: The Prisoner. It also suggests Famuyiwa has a longer-form Star Wars story of his own to tell. His directorial debut in the galaxy, Chapter 2: The Child, was a fabulous self-contained adventure seemingly inspired by the simple question What if Boba Fett fought Jawas? Chapter 6, his debut as a writer (with Christopher Yost), continued with the seemingly one-off stories, while introducing a compelling set of miscreants, Mayfeld included. While it is possible he will stay on Morak to help the indigenous population fend off Imps and pirates — a worthy conclusion to his tale — it is also possible Famuyiwa has found a way to highlight the struggles of more common people caught between the never-ending conflicts in the galaxy. And with Star Wars expanding its television footprint to 19 series(!) in the next few years, we have to wonder if Famuyiwa will apply his craft to, say, Rangers of the New Republic. He is a great a filmmaker, and it s clear he can do great things in the Star Wars format, so we think it is time to set him loose on a series or a feature film. He is more than capable.Although, considering Dune declared Mayfeld dead while letting him go, we also have to wonder if he will have to dodge those Rangers in the upcoming series or befriend them.Questioning The Remnant(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)While we ponder Mayfeld s future in New Republic space, we also have to consider the Remnant s place in all of this.Is Another Operation: Cinder Afoot? While Palpatine s contingency plans were meant to cripple the Remnant and the New Republic in short order, both factions endured. Is the chaos Hess said would soon happen part of another contingency? The forces that will become the First Order and the Final Order are already ensconced in the Unknown Regions by this point, so sacrificing more Imps to hobble the New Republic feels on-point for the Sith Lord. Provided he s still issuing commands in his bizarre afterlife, of course. What Is The Remnant s Command Structure? Expanding on a question we ve asked before, it is still unclear if these Imperial Remnant enclaves are working in concert or independently of one another. In the Star Wars: Battlefield II campaign, directives regarding Operation: Cinder and other aspects of Palpatine s contingency are delivered to high ranking Imps via prerecorded holo-messages from the Emperor himself. The secrecy involved suggests Palpatine may have encouraged Remnant forces to splinter as part of the plan to cripple anyone not in the Unknown Regions. At the same time, it is possible Gideon united the factions into one organized Remnant. But even if that is the case, it still leaves us to wonder if Gideon is working at Palpatine s behest or for his own ambitions. How Strong Is the ISB? The Imperial Security Bureau definitely gives our heroes pause, but its strength only seems to extend to Remnant controlled zones or specific operations directed by Gideon, himself a former ISB operative. Is the ISB a credible threat? If so, why did the ISB lose track of Djarin and Grogu following the events on Nevarro last season? Why Did the Terminal Recognize Djarin s Face? From Mayfeld s explanation of the terminal system, we expected the facial scan to be another layer of the verification process. If that is true, why did it recognize Djarin s face? The simplest explanation, of course, is that the scan is just a simple logging system instead of a security function. Which may mean Gideon will use the record of the Mandalorian s face against him. Will Djarin Really Carry On Under the Helmet? Although all the Imps who saw his face are dead and Mayfeld choose to ignore what he saw, we can t help but wonder how Djarin can continue to wear the armor after being seen. On the one hand, he s seen plenty of Mandos this season who do not live by the Way of the Mandalore. On the other, he s still a religious zealot who has yet to reconcile the Way with the evidence of his own eyes. Perhaps, like Mayfeld said, Djarin will do what he must to get Grogu back and, after retrieving him, will leave the armor with Boba Fett; in fact, that feels like the right note to end the season on. We ll know soon enough, though, as next week is the season finale. The Mandalorian streams on Disney+.On an Apple device? That s essentially the log line for this supernatural horror film, which centers on an alien child who crash-lands on Earth, finds a home with two loving human parents, and eventually grows up to become an agent of terror. With Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn s name in the credits (he s one of the producers) and a unique spin on the traditional superhero tale, the movie has raised fan expectation higher than your run-of-the-mill horror flick.5a. But that backlash seems to have died down a bit, leaving fans curious and even a little cautiously optimistic. We ll just have to wait and see how it turns out.5b. Though it s difficult to say whether or not Rocketman will experience the kind of success that Bohemian Rhapsody did, it certainly appeals to the same audience, and it makes for a nice bit of counterprogramming for Godzilla: King of the Monsters.Like this? King of the Crop: Fantastic Beasts Wins Weekend But Signals Trouble Ahead(Photo by Warner Bros)Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald topped the box office this weekend easily, but that s about the only domestic victory the film can claim. It can’t even boast having the best start of the 2018 holiday season so far, falling behind The Grinch’s .5 million last week. By the time the final estimates come out it may not even be a Top 25 November opening. (However, it’s international numbers are more than solid with a worldwide tally of 3 million just this weekend.)The million opening is the lowest in the entire Harry Potter franchise. The previous low: Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them with .4 million. Before that it was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, though that posted the second-highest multiple of the series with a 3.78x.Fantastic Beasts is scheduled to be a five-part series, and critics are bailing on just the second movie. Will audiences? Anything less than 4 million domestic (likely) equals declining territory. And less than 0 million domestic will be a major disappointment for WB. So is it the international haul that truly matters? Like the Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean franchises, American audiences may have grown weary, but as long coffers fill overseas, we will see more of them yet.Rotten Returns: Instant Family Continues Streak of Mark Wahlbombs(Photo by Paramount)Paramount got strong reviews from critics for Mark Wahlberg-starring Instant Family, but the million production from Sean Anders did not have that sweet Daddy’s Home connection with Will Ferrell. Confident that audiences would be looking for a potential feel-good film for the holidays, the studio moved the film up from February into this weekend and was rewarded with just .5 million. Since 1990 there have been a dozen films that have started between .7-.7 million, and only three of them have reached million: The Jackal (1997), Horrible Bosses 2, and Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, which benefited from an awards run. If word-of-mouth cannot build Instant Family this will go down as the seventh straight film that Mark Wahlberg has headlined that has ended up on the losing side of its budget. Steve McQueen’s Widows seemingly is in the same boat as Instant Family with just a .3 million opening and million budget. But as a potential awards player, there is a room for longevity.Top Ten and Beyond: Grinch Eyes Seasonal High, No Box Office Rhapsody For Adult Fare(Photo by © 20th Century Fox)Illumination’s animated adaptation of The Grinch finds itself in a pretty good position, pulling ahead of The Lorax (also from Illumination) with a 10-day gross of 6.5 million. That puts The Grinch at a total end estimate in the 0-0 million range. Meanwhile, another box office song going on: Bohemian Rhapsody, which looks to end in 0 million range. It is over 4 million worldwide to date, making the film a tremendous success for Fox.Non-Grinch, not-Queen movies have less to sing about. With respective budgets of and million, Overlord and The Girl In the Spider s Web are at a mere .7 and .2 million. The new Dragon Tattoo Story is only at million worldwide. Overlord is not much better at million, but it is safe to say we have have seen the last of Lisbeth Salander on the big screen. Disney and theaters are bailing fast on another overpriced failure: The Nutcracker and the Four Realms ( million domestic, 6 million worldwide against a0 million budget), which vanished from over 1,100 theaters in just its third weekend.Julian Schnabel’s At Eternity’s Gate had the best per-theater-average of the weekend, with ,000 in four theaters, though it is not much of a number to crow about. Another awards hopeful, Green Book, played 25 theaters, driving up 2k before it will expand into over 1,000 on Wednesday. For the MST3kers out there, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie opened in 26 theaters to 6k. (Enjoy the new season on Netflix this Wednesday!)

(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)It s estimated that between 75 and 90 percent of films made before 1929 are either lost or only exist in incomplete form. As part of our RT Archives project, we are collecting contemporaneous reviews for those films – see a full list here and read what critics said about them at the time – and shining a spotlight on the stories and people behind them. Learn more about the RT Archives project here. In the early 20th century, the name Annette Kellermann elicited an awe reserved for a select few. A screen siren in the most literal of terms, Kellermann (often credited as Kellerman, with a single n ) was a swimmer-turned-actress who arguably stands now as a precursor for the kind of crossover success that has marked the careers of the likes of fellow former athletes Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Indeed, like those two Hollywood stars, Kellermann’s physique was instrumental to her entry into and success in cinema, making her a pioneer of the jock film star that seems all too common today.Kellermann was first seen on the big screen in short films like Miss Annette Kellerman (1909), where she showed off her swimming technique and her then-famous high dives. But it would be her work on feature films like Neptune’s Daughter (1914) and A Daughter of the Gods (1916), the first ever million dollar picture, that cemented her as a marquee name in the budding film industry. Only a few of Kellermann’s 30-odd film appearances survive to this day – both Neptune s Daughter and A Daughter of the Gods have been lost – but they’re enough, along with her cultural impact as a health advocate, a one-piece swimsuit trailblazer, and an intrepid athlete, to have made her an indelible part of early film history.Born in 1886 in Sydney, Australia to a pair of musicians (her father was a violinist, her mother a pianist), Kellermann needed to wear steel braces on her legs as a child. Likely due to polio, this is what first pushed her to take up swimming at age 6, as a way of strengthening her legs. By the time she was 13 she’d completely rehabilitated those future money-earners and by the time she was 16 she’d taken up swimming in earnest, winning meets and breaking records in New South Wales state championships.(Photo by Hulton Archive / Stringer / Getty Images)Kellermann soon became a sensation in Australia, alternating between participating in swimming and diving exhibitions as well as breaking more records during competitions. In 1905, she and her father moved to England where her long-distance swims earned her plenty of press; she was even sponsored by The Daily Mirror to attempt to swim the English Channel, a feat she’d try two more times in those years without ever being wholly successful. Moving away and eventually retiring from long-distance swimming, Kellermann set her eyes on more lucrative ventures that still made great use of her talents. That’s how Kellermann ended up across the Atlantic. Oft-advertised as “The Perfect Woman” – posters for her appearances usually included measurements that showed her body metrics matched the Venus de Milo’s – Kellermann was a vaudeville sensation in the early 1910s. Her elaborate synchronized swimming performances attracted audiences in Chicago, Boston, New York, and eventually all over Europe and in her native Australia. It was during this time that Kellermann gained even more notoriety for an alleged 1907 arrest on a Boston beach. While contemporary women’s swimwear consisted of a rather bulky dress/pantaloon combination (often accompanied by long black stockings and bathing slippers), Kellermann had opted to wear a fitted one-piece costume that ended in shorts above her knees – the kind she wore during her exhibitions – which led to her being cited for indecency. (Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)The incident, which remains disputed, nevertheless speaks to Kellermann’s advocacy against such strictures on women’s bodies. Advocating for sleeker swimsuits that were less restricting, she led the way toward relaxing Victorian-era norms on what was appropriate beachwear, eventually selling her own branded “Annette Kellermann Sun-Kist’ swimsuits” in U.S. stores from around 1914 to the late 1930s, all but making her name synonymous with the one-piece swimsuit we know today. A savvy entertainer keyed into a rapidly changing audience, Kellermann knew she had the wherewithal to diversify into other potentially lucrative endeavors. While her first foray on the stage (in the short-lived London production of Undine) in 1912 wasn’t a good fit, her eventual move into feature-length films soon turned her into a bona fide movie star. Her first feature film, Neptune’s Daughter, was produced by Carl Laemmle of Universal Film Producing Company; based on an idea pitched by Kellermann herself, the Captain Leslie T. Peacock-scripted and Herbert Brenon-directed adventure film followed a young mermaid intent on avenging her sister, who died when caught by fishermen’s nets. With a fantastical background and even a romantic subplot that echoed a certain Hans Christian Anderson folk tale, Neptune’s Daughter was crafted around Kellermann’s talents. Not only were her swimming and diving skills front and center in elaborate underwater set pieces, but that same “perfect body” that had lured vaudeville audiences to her shows was here yet again presented as a selling point. As Variety noted in its review of the film, men were likely to watch the film several times, “if only for the purpose of having another flash at the divine form of Kellermann, in this instance draped only by her hair, as the mystic power of the Witch s shell transforms her from a mermaid into a regular girl.”(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)Her second feature, A Daughter of the Gods – reportedly the first ever million-dollar film production – further established Kellermann as a performer whose sheer physicality could command the screen. Yet again playing a water-based creature, the Australian swimmer-turned-actress turned heads for what’s considered the very first nude scene by a major star. Still, critics at the time admired her acting as much as her physicality: “Miss Kellermann aside from her daring feats, acted with great skill and gave a most creditable impersonation,” Moving Picture World noted in its review of A Daughter of the Gods.Kellermann’s creative input on these early productions, as well as later films like Queen of the Sea (1918), What Women Love (1920), and Venus of the South Seas (1924), put her in a league of equally influential film screen stars like Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford. The many death-defying stunts she performed – including jumping into pools with live crocodiles and diving from rocky cliffs, often shooting on location in Jamaica and Bermuda – established her as an action star whose showmanship and athleticism always went hand in hand. It’s no surprise to find that, decades later, another swimmer-turned-actress (MGM’s Esther Williams) would star in a musical biopic on her life in 1952’s Million Dollar Mermaid. Kellermann was a legend in her own time, a true pioneer who managed to make a name for herself with her body but never let herself be reduced to it. While most of her films have been lost, her extraordinary stunts surviving only in film reviews and printed features, she remains a pivotal figure in early cinema that deserves to be better known and appreciated. What Critics Said About Kellermann s Lost Films When They Were Released: A revelation (Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)“In several of the scenes Miss Kellerman, in white, close-fitting tights, gives entertaining exhibitions of swimming and diving, her graceful form standing out against the brushwood like a marble statue as she poses before she dives.” – The Daily Telegraph (Sydney)“[Kellerman] proves herself an accomplished actress, a mistress of the terpsichorean art, and an expert swordswoman, well worthy to be wooed and won by the King of the country she lands in.” – The Age (Melbourne) “There is one scene that particularly will live in the memory. Annette, a mortal, feels the lure of the water. Behind a bush in the forest she discards her peasant dress. Out darts a white-tighted figure. From a vegetation-faced cliff over an inland bit of still water Annette performs the evolutions that have thrilled her audiences in settings far different.” – George Blaisdell, Moving Picture World “Miss Kellerman, in a recent interview, said she did not wish to go in for swimming and diving any longer. She wanted a play in which she could have a dramatic part so she might be judged for her histrionic merits. In this production she has proven her right to such consideration.” – A. Danson Michell, Motion Picture News“The usual spectacular dives Miss Kellermann has become famed for are performed during the picture, and she gives visual evidence also of her remarkable ability to swim and of endurance, always in the water with a fish-tail (as a mermaid) that prevents the employment of her feet for assistance, swimming only with her hands. As a picture actress, Miss Kellerman is a revelation.” – Variety(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)“Some admirable light and shade effects are revealed in the photographed scenery during the progress of the story, which has been ingenious ly developed and produced, and the performance throughout of Miss Kellermann as the child of the seas is as skillful as it is graceful and refined.” – The Daily Telegraph (Sydney)“Miss Kellermann aside from her daring feats, acted with great skill and gave a most creditable impersonation.” – Moving Picture World“Herbert Brenon placed his confidence in the appeal of the mass scene and Miss Kellermann s physical charm and skill in diving and swimming to carry the fanciful story along to success. His confidence, it would seem, was well placed.” – Motography“The beautiful figure of Annette Kellermann and her matchless skill as an amphibienne are made the most of in A Daughter of the Gods, the elaborate, spectacular and somewhat monotonous photofable which was unfolded for the first time last evening at the Lyric Theatre.” – The New York TimesOn an Apple device? The book has sparked discussion about who has the right to tell stories outside their own cultures and experiences, and Winfrey found herself pulled into the mix (and the target of anger from some of those readers) after she selected the book for her Oprah’s Book Club.New Trailers: Hugh Jackman Dishes Up Some Bad Education on HBOMore trailers:Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, season 1, starring Natalie Dormer (Showtime)I Know This Much Is True, drama starring Mark Ruffalo (HBO)Stranger Things, season 4 table read (Netflix)Killing Eve, season 3, starring Sandra Oh (BBC America)What We Do in the Shadows, season 2 teaser (FX)The English Game, season 1, from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes (Netflix)Breeders, season 1, family comedy starring Martin Freeman (FX)The Last O.G., season 3, starring Tracy Morgan and Tiffany Haddish (TBS)Belgravia, limited series based on the Julian Fellowes novel (EPIX)Home Before Dark, season 1, starring Brooklynn Prince and Jim Sturgess (Apple TV+)Transformers: War For Cybertron Trilogy: Siege, season 1, animated series (Netflix)Boomerang, season 2, with all episodes directed by women of color (BET)Elite, season 3, Spanish teen drama (Netflix)Future Man, season 3, starring Josh Hutcherson (Hulu)On My Block, season 3, teen comedy (Netflix)Tales From the Loop, season 1, starring Rebecca Hall (Amazon Video)Go Karts, coming-of-age racing movie (Netflix)For all the latest TV and streaming trailers, subscribe to the Rotten Tomatoes TV YouTube channel.Casting News: Silicon Valley Star Thomas Middleditch Needs a Kidney in Chuck Lorre s B Positive(Photo by Michael Kovac/Getty Images for 101 Studios)Silicon Valley star Thomas Middleditch will star in Chuck Lorre’s CBS comedy pilot B Positive, about a recently-divorced dad, Drew, who needs a kidney donor. In 2019, Rotten Tomatoes turns 21, and to mark the occasion we’re celebrating with a series of features that look back at the brightest moments on screen of the past two decades – and one year – and the things that have us excited for the future. Rotten Tomatoes is celebrating its 21st year in existence! But we didn t get here alone. Nope, RT exists because of you, the fans, and the critics whose invaluable work makes up our Tomatometer. To kick off the start of our birthday celebrations, we ve gone and gathered up majorly fun facts and stats about RT that we ve accrued since 1998! (Note: All Tomatometer factoids are accurate up until February 26, 2019.)1. Total Number Of Reviews Featured on RT: 1,106,872 For Movies; 99,616 For TV(Photo by Walt Disney Co./courtesy Everett Collection)Last month, we hit the major million milestone for movies! It only took 21 years, eight office moves, and, conservatively, 50,000 cups of coffee. In 2013, we began collecting and adding TV and streaming reviews, and though we re still a ways away from hitting a million, we re hopeful that the legend of a trove of Law Order reviews buried in the Hollywood Hills proves true.2. Number of Tomatometers Generated: 25,688 For Movies, 1,625 For TVIt takes five reviews to generate an initial Tomatometer score for movies and TV shows. This has happened 27,313 times on Rotten Tomatoes, so far. Would you believe it never gets less thrilling?3. Average Tomatometer For All Movies: 62%(Photo by Columbia Pictures Television/courtesy Everett Collection)That number is proof that people generally do set out to make good movies – and succeed – or at least not make one that would get laughed out of theaters. And it s proof that critics come not with knives drawn, but with the hope that a discovery will be made that everyone needs to know about.4. Average Tomatometer For All Movies (With At Least 20 Reviews Each): 65%And the average percentage goes up if you add a 20-review minimum, suggesting that a movie that s generated enough interest to get rated professionally 20 times has something to warrant it getting that far. And why 20 reviews? That s the number when a movie becomes eligible for our patented, pithy Critics Consensus write-ups.5. Unlikely Celebrity Inspiration For Rotten Tomatoes: Jackie Chan(Photo by New Line/courtesy Everett Collection)Site creator Senh Duong was famously inspired to start Rotten Tomatoes in 1998 after searching for reviews of Jackie Chan movies which, like all reviews at the time, sat uncollected across disparate corners of the internet. Rumble in the Bronx had released nationwide in 1996, which got Duong looking for reviews of Chan s other imports: Supercop, Twin Dragons, and First Strike. Two years later, on August 18, 1998, Rotten Tomatoes went live.6. Unlikely Movie Inspiration For Rotten Tomatoes Name: Léolo (1992) 90%The name Rotten Tomatoes came to Duong while watching the fantasy film Leolo, from 1992, about a boy who imagines himself to be the offspring of an Italian peasant and a giant tomato. It is, appropriately, Fresh.7. First Movie to Ever Get a Tomatometer: Your Friends & Neighbors (1998) 77%After the founding of RT, the first movie to officially get a Tomatometer was Your Friends Neighbors, Neil LaBute s modern tale of urbane immorality. It even went Certified Fresh, currently sitting at 77%! The critics consensus reads that though it may strike some viewers as cold and unpleasant, it s also an incisive critique of sexual politics wrapped up in scathing black comedy. Truly, a light and pleasant start to Rotten Tomatoes dominion.8. Oldest Movie With A Tomatometer: A Trip to the Moon (1902) 100%(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)Georges Méliès little sci-fi epic, which generated cinema s first iconic image in The Man in the Moon with a rocket ship embedded in his right eye. Trip is 100% on the Tomatometer, but at nine reviews, it doesn t meet the 20-review threshold to be eligible for a critics consensus. Look, just give it another 117 years, will ya?9. Number of Certified Fresh Movies: 3,310; Number of Certified Fresh TV Seasons: 715The Certified Fresh label is the greatest designation on Rotten Tomatoes. We have 196,013 movies in our database, which means your movie has a historic 1.69% chance of becoming Certified Fresh. Meanwhile, there are a total of 14,333 listed TV seasons knocking around on the site, equaling a much-friendlier 5% chance of a TV season being Certified Fresh.10. Oldest Movie To Be Certified Fresh: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919) 99%What s it take to become Certified Fresh? For movies, it s having a 75% Tomatometer score after 40 reviews (or 80, if you re a modern wide release), with five of those coming from Top Critics. Caligari, with its gaunt German Expressionism theatrics, is the oldest movie to qualify for that prestigious designation, and is considered one best horror movies ever made to this day. (It s #2 on our list of the 150 Best Horror Movies.)11. Oldest TV Series With A Tomatometer: The Honeymooners: Lost Episodes 100%Are we detecting some kind of moon motif when it comes to these oldest milestones on Rotten Tomatoes? The Jackie Gleason classic show lasted only one season (or 39 episodes) but it s endured thanks to its assorted catchphrases and its historical significance as the first major depiction of the working class in sitcoms.12. Number of 100% Movies (With At Least 20 Reviews): 332You could watch nearly a different perfectly-rated movie every day for a year, taking in some stone-cold masterpieces like Citizen Kane, Seven Samurai, and Repulsion, and contemporary classics like Before Sunrise, Toy Story 2, and Leave No Trace. And at the rate these kinds of movies are cropping up, you could likely fill up a 365-day watching schedule by 2020.13. 100% Movie With The Most Reviews: Paddington 2 (2017) 99%(Photo by Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)The most lovable bear in all of cinema, at least until Annihlation came out. Just last year Paddington, this genteel beacon of hope in cynical times, and his movie usurped the best-reviewed crown from Toy Story 2, which had had the distinction since 1999. Lady Bird was also able to briefly do the same, before it was felled by its first Rotten review.14. Number of 99% Movies (With At Least 20 Reviews): 45So you just made a movie and it didn t hit 100%. After your feeling of debilitating failure leaves the body, would you be willing to accept the second-best percentage on the site? Members of the 99 Club include hunger-inducing Jiro Dreams of Sushi, indie breakthroughs (Lady Bird, Eighth Grade), something from Pixar (Finding Nemo), horror classics (Aliens, Rosemary s Baby), and Metropolis, whose sole Rotten review comes from a 1926 issue of Variety.15. Number of 60% Movies (With At Least 20 Reviews): 131Better not catch y all slippin , because one percentage point drop and these movies are in Rotten! Some movie fans may be shocked to learn which films the sword of Damocles hangs so perilously over, like Rush Hour or Mystery Men. Then there are other movies, like the primal and basic 300, for which a 60% feels juuuuust right.16. Number of 59% movies (With At Least 20 Reviews): 91So close to Freshness! Some 91 movies – with at least 20 reviews – are right on the cusp of being Fresh, which of course didn t stop the likes of Mr. Mrs. Smith and Oz the Great and Powerful from being boffo box office smashes. Included in this pile of barely Rotten movies are enduring 90s trash classics (Deep Blue Sea), literal trash (Trash Humpers), failed prestige pics (The Front Runner, Concussion), and of course a later-period Liam Neeson action movie (Run All Night).17. Number of 1% movies (With At Least 20 Reviews): 5(Photo by Freestyle Releasing/courtesy Everett Collection)Getting a Tomatometer score of 1% is probably the most difficult ignoble feat to achieve on Rotten Tomatoes. Not only do you have to get enough reviews for it to be mathematically possible, you have to count on only one or two critics willing to come forward to say they liked it. Let s give a hand to Alone in the Dark, Left Behind, Daddy Day Camp, Twisted, and Disaster Movie!18. Number of 0% Movies (With At Least 20 Reviews): 36It takes a lot of effort to make a movie. It takes a lot of effort to get critics to review it. And it takes a lot of effort for all of them to hate it. Jaws: The Revenge, Mac and Me, Bucky Larson shine on, you crazy diamonds.19. 0% Movie With The Most Reviews: Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (2002) 0%The title doesn t make any sense and it only goes downhill from there. The incomprehensible spy-thriller starred Antonio Banderas and Lucy Liu and came out in 2002, a year when their careers were peak enough that neither had any reason to make this movie. To date, 117 critics have been able to re-assemble their shattered minds after experiencing Ballistic to submit Rotten reviews. Meanwhile, back in 2017 we celebrated the movie s 15th anniversary with some cake:
Premiering during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ted Lasso became the feel-good sports comedy we didn t know we needed. The series from Jason Sudeikis, Bill Laurence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly slowly found its way into our hearts, garnering multiple accolades and a Peabody Award along the way.The gist of the program follows U.S. Football Coach Ted Lasso (Sudeikis) as he travels from America to the U.K. to coach a struggling soccer team. Season 1 put underdog team AFC Richmond on competitive ground, even though they faced a loss and were relegated. Now Lasso and his crew — Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Coach Beard (Hunt), Keeley Jones (Juno Temple), Higgins (Jeremy Swift), Nathan (Nick Mohammed) — must maintain the team s relevancy in the professional sports world while dealing with personal challenges along the way. With new episodes launching on AppleTV+ on Friday, July 23, and a third season in development, does the show still hit the mark? Here s what critics are saying about Ted Lasso season 2:HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO SEASON 1?(Photo by AppleTV+)The premiere does get off to a bumpy start with a clunky plot point that’s out of character for a normally grounded series, but it leads to the introduction of Season 2’s big addition: sports psychologist Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, played by Sarah Niles (I May Destroy You). She’s brought in to help get the players’ heads on straight, and she quickly lets Ted know she’s not a fan of juvenile horseplay… or cookies. The players love her, but she’s seemingly immune to Ted’s charms — and her arrival triggers a fresh wave of anxiety in the old ball coach.  Dave Nemetz, TVLineLuckily, after a less-than-successful start to the season, Ted Lasso quickly regains its footing, and the writers reveal they haven’t completely forgotten how to make good TV.  Kaitlin Thomas, Paste MagazineIn the opening minutes of the new season’s first episode (“Goodbye Earl”), Ted eloquently espouses on how life and death can make us better people, evoking the heightened dramedy of Lawrence’s Scrubs. The episode also carries a reminder to avoid blanket assumptions as “all people are different people” as well as the insight that “intimacy is leaving yourself open to being attacked.” Pearls of wisdom deployed as easily digestible sitcom bites.  Brandon Katz, ObserverWHAT ARE THE BIG THEMES THIS SEASON? (Photo by Apple TV+)If Season 1 was a fish-out-of-water story about a man who succeeds through kindness and positivity and baking really great biscuits, then Season 2 is all about the health and success of the team and expanding the narrative beyond Ted’s immediate influence on those around him.  Kaitlin Thomas, Paste MagazineHopefully, the addition of stern sports psychologist Dr. Sharon Fieldstone (Sarah Niles) will help correct that balance. Her presence alone is evidence enough that – contrary to how this show often positions him – Lasso doesn’t have the answers to all of life’s questions. In the season premiere, Sharon is deliberately written as distant and enigmatic, which doesn’t give Niles a huge amount of room to play, but the character’s potential is already clear to see.  David Craig, Radio TimesTed Lasso embraces the fact that life is sometimes very hard; it s just also committed to the idea that we can still make it easier for each other.  Liz Shannon Miller, ColliderDOES IS STILL HIT THE FEEL-GOOD MARK?The emotional intelligence of Ted Lasso remains remarkably high. It’s what continues to elevate the series above common feel-good stories, which are often given a pass by audiences to exist as middle-of-the-road creations that opt for simplicity over nuance. But Ted Lasso is a more aspirational entry in this specific lane of storytelling.  Brandon Katz, ObserverSo much of its appeal lies in its essential good-naturedness — that belief that good people model goodness for each other, and that selflessness and community thinking can make everyone feel, work, and live better.  Clint Worthington, ConsequenceThe laughter quotient remains high for me; the more things change, the funnier things get, in large measure because the characters are better defined and the actors have a better handle on what makes their personalities distinctive, and different from everyone else.  Peter Martin, ScreenAnarchyThe show’s success would be meaningless without the eloquent, witty, and refreshing writing, which only grows more powerful as it progresses. In some ways, the new season of Ted Lasso changes right in front of our eyes. Previously a baby, the story is now reaching its full potential, with the characters maturing and learning new things about life.  Zofia Wijaszka, AwardsWatchHOW IS JASON SUDEIKIS PERFORMANCE?(Photo by Apple TV+)Sudeikis slides back into the mustache and button-down/sweater combo of Ted with as much bright-eyed joy and unexpected vulnerability as last season, even as we see season 2 starting to throw up some more roadblocks for him.  Clint Worthington, ConsequenceIn reaching for a criticism of this relentlessly upbeat season so far, it’s the over-reliance on Ted’s folksy witticisms. There’s a conversation early on in the season in which he uses three similes and metaphors back-to-back-back. It’s smirk-worthy when Ted responds to a cocktail invitation by saying the “same thing I’d say to Diane Sawyer if she ever asked me on a date: yes please.” The show has never been about traditional setup-punchline jokes and this personality tic substituted for that humor in Season 1. But after the umpteenth usage in Season 2, it begins to feel a tad cloying. Still, that’s far from a fatal flaw.  Brandon Katz, ObserverNot only does Sudeikis take his performance to new levels in season 2, he ventures into new territory with the character, and the show built around him is better for it.  Rick Marshall, Digital TrendsWHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE CAST?(Photo by Apple TV+)In particular, Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh) and Danny Rojas take more central roles in the narrative. Jimoh is a revelation, charming with every smile or grimace. Fernández propels Danny past the one-joke punchline of his original appearance ( football is life! ) and shows superb comedic skills.  Kelly Lawler, USA TodayLike his titular character, executive producer Sudeikis doesn t lead with his ego, and the best material in the new episodes goes to his fellow writer-performer Goldstein. Roy Kent is a blisteringly funny bastard with a fierce heart, and Goldstein deepens his character s emotional core every week — including, if you can believe it, as the key player in a rom-com tribute episode.  Kristen Baldwin, EWHannah Waddingham and Juno Temple continue their strong on-screen chemistry as club owner Rebecca and model-turned-publicist Keeley, who became unlikely besties over the course of season one.  David Craig, Radio TimesThe series has doubled down on what works—Ted’s ability to lead, Rebecca’s (Hannah Waddingham) strength, Keeley’s (Juno Temple) PR acumen, and Nate’s (Nick Mohammed) keen insight into the team—while also finding new and fun ways to explore characters like Roy (Brett Goldstein) and Jamie (Phil Dunster).  Kaitlin Thomas, Paste MagazineANY FINAL THOUGHTS?(Photo by Apple TV+)“Ted Lasso” hasn’t succumbed to any easy temptations; it still embodies its coach in being sweeter than it should be able to get away with and smarter than you’d expect, given its unassuming nature. “Ted Lasso” hasn’t been changed by its success, aside from a few guilt-free indulgences.  Ben Travers, IndiewireThis time out, Lasso comes out of the locker room ready to play from the first whistle. The jokes land correctly from the start, the characters seem as rich or richer than when we last saw them. Happily, Ted Lasso looks poised to dodge any sort of sophomore slump.  Tim Stevens, The SpoolSeason 2 of Ted Lasso loses none of the show’s momentum heading into its next story arc, and builds on the successes of its first season in all the right ways. It continues to be one of the smartest, most entertaining, and most rewarding shows running right now, thanks to a talented cast that remains as invested in the series and its messages as their characters are in the optimistic outlook of the show’s titular coach.  Rick Marshall, Digital TrendsTed Lasso Season 2 is premiering at a very different time, comparatively, but that doesn t make it any less important or valuable or necessary. It s hard to imagine a world where we wouldn t need a show like this.  Liz Shannon Miller, ColliderTed Lasso season 2 premieres on Friday, July 23 on AppleTV+.Thumbnail: Apple TV+

At midnight ET on March 6, Winfrey will premiere a two-part interview with Cummins, plus authors Reyna Grande, Julissa Arce and Esther Cepeda, and members of the Latinx community, followed by a discussion with Latinx people “who saw themselves reflected in the book and share their insights into real-life migrant experiences,” according to Apple.American Dirt, which tells the story of a Mexican mother and son who try to make their way to the American border after the rest of their family is murdered by a cartel, has drawn the ire of readers who accuse Cummins – who identified as white before revealing she has a Puerto Rican grandmother, Vulture reports – of being “appropriative” in telling the story. (Photo by Netflix)Hollywood s been cranking out bad video game–based movies for almost as long as Mario s been trying to rescue Princess Peach. And while recent efforts, like Sonic the Hedgehog and Mortal Kombat, have offered some hope for the genre, others (sorry, Monster Hunter) suggest the curse if far from broken. But while our polygon heroes continue to flounder on the big screen, they re quietly flourishing on Netflix.Between Castlevania, Dragon s Dogma, and The Witcher (technically based on the books that inspired the games, but still) the streamer has made this whole video-game-adaptation thing look easy. And they re just getting warmed up, with several more live-action and animated projects in the pipeline. Other streaming platforms are getting in on the action, too, gobbling up gaming adaptations like a pellet-chomping Pac-Man.Read Also: 45 Video Game Movies Ranked Worst to BestDozens of these projects are in the works, but a number of them are in the very early stages of development – or, worse, stuck in development hell. But for every project that hasn t offered a peep of fresh intel since 2020 (looking at you, Fallout, Diablo, and Cyberpunk 2077) there s a series casting, shooting, or tackling post-production.So whether you re wondering when Halo’s Master Chief will finally bring the fight to the small screen or want to know what Splinter Cell’s long-neglected Sam Fisher is up to on Netflix, see below for a list of game-based shows coming soon to a streaming service near you.Castlevania (spin-off series)(Photo by Netflix)Castlevania’s fourth season put the final nail in the show s coffin, but Netflix isn t about to drive a stake through the successful franchise. While the popular animated adaptation won t continue with a fifth season, it will enjoy immortality via an all-new spin-off series; in fact, the streamer has already outlined the premise: Set during the French Revolution, the show will star Richter Belmont, offspring of the original s Trevor and Sypha (pictured). The whip-wielding monster hunter will be joined by fan-favorite character Maria Renard, presumably to thwart more evil.Resident Evil: Infinite DarknessResident Evil fans still suffering nightmares from the recently released Village will want to brace themselves, as the survival horror series has more frights coming right around the corner. Netflix s Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness hits July 8 with an all-new spine-tingling tale, set in a walking dead–infested White House. Unfolding between the game franchise s 4th and 5th mainline entries, the CGI animated show stars zombie-slaying stalwarts Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield.Resident EvilWhen the Wesker kids move to New Raccoon City, the secrets they uncover might just be the end of everything. Resident Evil, a new live action series based on Capcom’s legendary survival horror franchise, is coming to Netflix. pic.twitter.com/XWh5XYxklD Netflix Geeked (@NetflixGeeked) August 27, 2020Like a virus unleashed by the evil-doing Umbrella Corporation, it seems Resident Evil is rapidly spreading through Netflix s schedule. On top of July s Infinite Darkness, the streamer is also hard at work on a live-action show based on the long-running survival horror franchise. The show will feature iconic sci-fi/fantasy character actor Lance Reddick as Albert Wesker, the series recurring villain. Beyond Reddick s role, a number of actors – Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Paola Nuñez, Siena Agudong, and Adeline Rudolph – have been cast to play yet-to-be-revealed characters.Tom Clancy s Splinter Cell(Photo by Netflix)Splinter Cell fans have waited years to once again don the iconic night-vision goggles of series protagonist Sam Fisher. But while Ubisoft seems unwilling to confirm the next chapter of the beloved stealth-shooter, they have given the green-light to a promising animated series. Even better, our favorite Third Echelon agent is in good hands, as John Wick creator Derek Kolstad in onboard to write the show. The Cuphead Show!Anyone who braved 2017 s brutally challenging Cuphead probably wished they could enjoy more of its animation when not having their butts handed to them by the game s bosses. Heavily inspired by 1930s cartoons, like Walt Disney s Silly Symphony shorts, it pleased the eyes as much as it blistered the thumbs. Netflix s upcoming series recaptures that absorbing style, while introducing all-new adventures for porcelain siblings Cuphead and Mugman. Of course, it wouldn t be Cuphead without some trouble, so King Dice – played by Wayne Brady – will also bring his signature blend of menace and charm.Far CryWith Giancarlo Esposito taking up the villain mantle in the upcoming Far Cry 6, the open-world, first-person shooter franchise has been enjoying more buzz than usual. It seems that trend will continue, as Netflix is prepping a pair of adult-aimed anime based on the series. While there s little intel on the first adaptation – simply referred to as Far Cry – details have surfaced on the second project titled Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. The second series is based on 2013 s Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, an over-the-top expansion with strong ’8os action-movie vibes.League of Legends: ArcaneRiot Games enormously popular multiplayer online battle arena (or MOBA) League of Legends is also set to make its streaming debut. After several delays, the animated adaptation, dubbed Arcane, is finally due to hit this fall. The fantasy-themed series unfolds in the game s Piltover utopia, as well as its less appealing, underground counterpart Zaun. The show will flesh out the backstory of Jinx, a criminal from the latter region and one of the game s fan-favorite champions. The Last of Us(Photo by Toni Anne Barson/WireImage; Dave J Hogan/Getty Images)Based on Sony s popular post-apocalyptic action-adventure, HBO s The Last of Us looks more promising with each casting update. The live-action series will see The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal and Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey (pictured) tackle the roles of Joel and Ellie, as the grizzled father figure and tough teen trekking across an America that s seen better days. On top of that perfect pairing, the show will star Merle Dandrige as Marlene, the same character she brilliantly voiced in the game.Read Also: Everything We Know About The Last of Us HBO SeriesAssassin s Creed(Photo by Ubisoft)Despite a big budget and plenty of star-power, 2016 s Assassin s Creed failed to break the game-to-film curse. Netflix s upcoming live-action series aims to remedy this on a smaller screen. Details are guarded tighter than the games many ancient mysteries, but prolific writer-producer Jeb Stuart has been named show-runner. Coincidentally, Stuart s also the creator of Netflix s Vikings follow-up, Vikings: Valhalla – which actually has no relation to last year s acclaimed game release Assassin s Creed: Valhalla.(Photo by Showtime)With Halo Infinite hitting this holiday season, , hype for the sci-fi, first-person shooter has been at an all-time high. Along with the building anticipation for Master Chief s next interactive adventure, there s fresh buzz surrounding the franchise s long-in-development TV adaptation. It had already been reported that Pablo Schreiber would don the iconic Spartan armor, but the latest word is the series has found a new home at Paramount+, cementing that it s not only still happening, but is due to land like a UNSC Dropship in 2022.Read also: Everything We Know About Halo TV SeriesTomb Raider(Photo by Warner Bros.)With a sequel to 2018 s Alicia Vikander–starring Tomb Raider in the works, it looks like Lara Croft will continue chasing fortune and glory on the big screen. But the iconic adventurer is also spelunking on the small screen, with a planned Netflix anime series. The show won t have any connection to Croft s cinematic exploits, but will instead continue where the game series recent trilogy left off. Screenwriter Tasha Huo, who s also working on The Witcher spin-off for the streamer, is producing and penning the show.Twisted Metal(Photo by Sony Interactive Entertainment)A car combat game that piqued in popularity during the PlayStation 2 era might sound like an odd fit for a live-action series — until you hear its premise and pedigree. Produced in part by Arrested Development’s Will Arnett, Twisted Metal is taking the action-comedy route. Toss in the fact that it s being penned by Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese and, well, it s still weird, but in the best possible way.Thumbnail image: Microsoft StudiosOn an Apple device? 环球国际 Eddie Murphy reprises one of his most popular movie characters ever (actually a handful of them) for the long-awaited sequel to Coming to America, and if you like the 1988 original, you may also enjoy Coming 2 America. Unfortunately, early reviews of the Amazon new release indicate the sequel borrows more than just its title from the first film, as the main complaint in the negative reviews of Craig Brewer’s follow-up are the movie s recycled bits. However, a lot of the favorable takes highlight the same overly faithful familiarity as a positive, or at least a harmless fault, while celebrating the return of Prince Akeem, Semi (Arsenio Hall) and the rest of the ensemble representing Zamunda and Queens. Especially Wesley Snipes. Here’s what critics are saying about Coming 2 America:Does the sequel live up to the original?I’m pleased to report the long-awaited, much-anticipated, will-it-ever-happen, heavily hyped Coming 2 America is just as gloriously funny and wonderful and original and gold-hearted.  Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-TimesVirtually no one does good comedy sequels, especially decades after the fact… of all the people to finally get it right, who would’ve expected it to be Eddie Murphy?  Vince Mancini, UproxxA pale imitation that never comes close to the dizzying highs of the original.  Matt Goldberg, ColliderMan, this is supposed to be the long-awaited follow up to Coming to America! Why does it feel so toothless and safe?  Sean O Connell, CinemaBlendWill it cater to your nostalgia?Man, is it a fun nostalgic ride to take. Carla Renata, The Curvy Film CriticThe film will easily capitalize on the lingering nostalgic affection for one of Murphy s most successful efforts, even if the original isn t nearly as funny as you might remember. Frank Scheck, Hollywood ReporterComing 2 America is cute and fun, a lovingly made exercise in nostalgia. Kristen Baldwin, Entertainment WeeklyIt’s a sequel that’s leaning heavily on your fond memories of the first movie without daring to bring anything new to the table. Matt Goldberg, Collider(Photo by Quantrell D. Colbert/©Amazon Studios)Are there too many references to the original? It works in plenty of odes to the original while updating it in, well, not really surprising ways, but at least they seem entirely heartfelt. Jason Adams, PajibaComing 2 America often risks dissolving into an assemblage of reference points, but Murphy’s Akeem provides just enough pathos to fuse the narrative together. Eric Kohn, IndieWireCraig Brewer, a superfan of Murphy and his films, doesn’t hide the joy he has for it and stuffs as much as he can in this film to prove it. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentComing 2 America includes so many nods to its predecessor that it feels like a feature-length easter egg in search of a movie. Frank Scheck, Hollywood ReporterSo is it just for the fans?Coming 2 America is adamantly, unabashedly one for the fans. And, judged solely by that mission, it’s a straight-up, if modest, success. Ann Hornaday, Washington PostThose who adore the original will feel like they’ve been revisited by an old friend, or perhaps the dirty uncle, whose jokes are a bit frayed but still pointed enough. Eric Kohn, IndieWireWho’s curious to know what these folks have been up to in that span? If you count yourself as an ‘I do!’ then, well, this movie answers that question. Sometimes with terrific comedy! Jason Adams, Pajiba(Photo by ©Amazon Studios)Do you need to have seen the original? If you haven’t seen or can’t quite recall Coming to America, the relevant background is helpfully supplied here, along with some new information. A.O. Scott, New York TimesA lot of the jokes will land even if you haven’t seen it. That being said, you will appreciate this one so much more if you have watched the first one. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyWhere do the main problems lie?Brewer and the film’s three writers (Barry W. Blaustein, David Sheffield, and Kenya Barris) get so caught up in repeating what worked before that they neglect characters with the most promise and potential. Rob Hunter, Film School RejectsOne of the chief problems with Coming 2 America is that it doesn’t even know who its protagonist should be. Matt Goldberg, ColliderIs it funny? If you are a fan of the first one, there are numerous callbacks that should have you laughing until your sides hurt. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyIt delivers several genuine laughs, even if it never achieves the comedic excellence of its predecessor. Kristen Baldwin, Entertainment WeeklyIt didn’t always make me laugh (though I laughed plenty), but it always made me smile. Vince Mancini, UproxxWith no strong characters and a muddled plot, it’s no surprise that most of the jokes in Coming 2 America fail to land. Matt Goldberg, Collider(Photo by Quantrell D. Colbert/©Amazon Studios)Does it veer into musical territory? From time to time, Coming 2 America stirs to life, especially when it goes full-on musical pageant. Justin Chang, Los Angeles TimesThere are more dance numbers than the first one, and they were some of my favorite scenes. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyIt’s a winning, maximalist musical extravaganza. Vince Mancini, UproxxHow is Eddie Murphy?Brash, lovable, and doused in irony at every turn, his outsized persona remains a singular figure in American comedy, evidently still capable of dominating the screen. Eric Kohn, IndieWireThe biggest letdown is seeing Murphy deliver such a generic, lifeless character after both the original film and his wildly charismatic and energetic performance in Brewer’s Dolemite Is My Name. Rob Hunter, Film School RejectsAnd the newcomers? While [Jermaine] Fowler proves an appealing comic actor, he s unable to bring much vibrancy to the formulaic goings-on. Frank Scheck, Hollywood ReporterLeslie Jones as Lavelle’s mother, Mary, and Tracy Morgan as his uncle, Reem, and they’re both as flat-out funny as you’d expect them to be. Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-TimesLeslie Jones is reliably hilarious. Anna Menta, DeciderThis movie provides further testimony to the absolute comic genius of Wesley Snipes. A.O. Scott, New York TimesWesley Snipes has never given such a riotous kind of deadpan performance. Eric Kohn, IndieWire(Photo by Quantrell D. Colbert/©Amazon Studios)Are there any notable cameos? The arrival of a certain famous baritone voice, who narrates a very ridiculous funeral, shows just how much the movie has invested in its jokey internal logic. Eric Kohn, IndieWireMuch of the film s fun stems from the celebrity cameos — including Morgan Freeman amusingly sending up his godlike narrator image and Trevor Noah as a ZNN anchor. Frank Scheck, Hollywood ReporterIs it more contemporary in its treatment of women characters? What I most appreciate about this sequel is the women of Zamunda are self sufficient, strong-willed, strong-minded and not reliant upon the approval of a man to be their own person. Carla Renata, The Curvy Film CriticThe film s feminism – which sees the girls doing some fighting and not much else – feels tacked on. Emma Simmonds, The ListLike the first movie, albeit to a less leering extent, this one wants to have its cake and eat it too when it comes to objectifying women. Ann Hornaday, Washington PostHow are Ruth E. Carter s costumes?Perhaps the biggest star of the film isn’t an on-screen player but its costume designer Ruth Carter, who has gone all out in creating an Afrocentric aesthetic that bursts with richly hued fabrics, lush textures and gleaming metallics. Ann Hornaday, Washington PostThe various royal garments give this film interesting ways to build off the characters and a wide array of colors to constantly work with, which shines just as brightly as the many happy faces seen throughout. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentI’m not exaggerating when I say that costume designer Ruth E. Carter deserves an(other) Oscar. Vince Mancini, UproxxShe could win another [Oscar] just for General Izzi’s warlord couture. A.O. Scott, New York Times(Photo by ©Amazon Studios)Is Coming 2 America ultimately worth streaming at home? It’s good at what it sets out to do. Which makes it great fun. Ann Hornaday, Washington PostIt’s the kind of comedy with a repeatability factor that will have you making plans to see it again before the closing credits even finish rolling. Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-TimesPerhaps some of this movie’s jokes would kill on the big screen rather than simply expiring as they did on my laptop. Justin Chang, Los Angeles TimesIf Coming 2 America had released in theaters, or on-demand for .99, I’m not sure it’d be worth it. But since it’s streaming free on Prime, and since you probably already have a subscription… Sure! Anna Menta, DeciderComing 2 America premieres on Amazon Prime on March 5, 2021.On an Apple device?
