(Photo by ©Universal, ©IFC Films courtesy Everett Collection)In late 2012, when it was announced that James Gunn was going to write and direct the Marvel superhero movie Guardians of the Galaxy, the immediate response from a lot of folks was either “What?” or “Who?” The people who exclaimed the former were hardcore Troma fans who passed around copies of Tromeo and Juliet on VHS, who showed up to watch Slither on its opening weekend in 2006, and who drove to one of the mere 39 theaters that played Super in 2011. The people who thought “Who?” were likely already familiar with Gunn s work as the writer of movies like Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, or Zack Snyder s Dawn of the Dead   even if they didn t recognize his name.Disney and Marvel displayed creative, outside-the-box thinking by hiring Gunn, and the decision has since proved lucrative, as the two Guardians of the Galaxy films have grossed over .6 billion at the worldwide box office. But if you ve seen Super, a film about a short-order cook with a short temper who bludgeons criminals with a pipe wrench, it s easy to wonder how Gunn s profane, violent streak would gel with a PG-13 Marvel blockbuster. In the end, Gunn mustered up all of the pelvic sorcery (for Groot’s dance moves) he built up during 20-plus years in the industry to create an awesome mix of comedy, action, and protagonists who claim their sexual exploits aboard a filthy ship have left the walls/floors/ceilings(?) looking like a Jackson Pollock painting when inspected with a black light. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Slither (March 31st, 2006) and the 10th anniversary of Super (April 1st, 2011), we look back at how Gunn’s pre-Marvel films helped prepare him for big-budget success.1. Super And Slither Allowed Gunn to Explore the Beautiful Side of Ugly Things(Photo by (c) Universal courtesy Everett Collection)What’s refreshing about James Gunn is that he’s always been open about his directorial style and how he tells his stories. In an interview for the release of the Slither DVD in 2006, Gunn said, “I think that all of my movies have sort of a contrast between ugly and beautiful in them.” Then in 2011, while doing press for Super, Gunn gave another interview during which he said, “I can’t be told life is beautiful through a normal positive thinking book or a Hallmark movie; that language doesn’t work for me. The language that works for me is the language of f ed up cinema and comics and things like that. To find the beauty, I really need to go through a darker channel than most people.”Looking through his filmography, these statements make a lot of sense; he has consistently crafted movies about broken characters finding their way with the aid of music, crass humor, and ultra-violence. For example, there’s an “ugly and beautiful” moment in Slither that cuts between a dance party to celebrate the opening of deer-hunting season and a woman being attacked by tentacles that will turn her into a vessel for alien leech babies. In Super, Gunn treats us to a murderous rampage scored by the peppy Monsters song “God Knows My Name” that features brightly-lit animated segments and a concrete block falling 20-feet onto an unsuspecting drug dealer s head. These contrasting scenes are nothing compared to the ugly and beautiful” mayhem that would appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. During one scene early in the film, three protagonists absolutely murder the living daylights out of hundreds of space pirates who were dumb enough to stage a mutiny. Fueled by the Jay the Americans song “Come a Little Bit Closer,” the rampage depicts the heroes, led by Michael Rooker, smiling like maniacs while they blow holes through their victims chests. Sure, blockbuster cinema has seen plenty of murder; it’s just rare to see the murderers enjoying themselves so much.Of course, things don t pan out so well for Rooker s Yondu in GotG2, but his heroic death is celebrated in bittersweet fashion with a brilliant fireworks display at the end of the film. Gunn may take his characters through dark times, but he finds beauty in those moments. In Super, it takes the form of a second chance for Sarah (Liv Tyler), Franks ex-wife and a former addict, who moves on to make an actual difference in other people’s lives (don’t worry, she doesn’t become a murderous superhero). Gunn wants his characters to have emotional catharsis; they just have to get dirty first.2. Slither Revealed His Passion for Subversion(Photo by (c) Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Back in 2006, Gunn referred to Slither as “the weird kid in the back of the class that is putting his boogers underneath the desk.” Slither was an oddity at the time, in that it wasn’t a remake, it didn’t feature any popular teen actors, and it was loaded with unexpected amounts of over-the-top midnight movie gore. At the end of its theatrical run, the million-budgeted, R-rated film only made million at the box office, as audiences were hesitant to spend money on something so loaded with boogers. However, critics and a new group of loyal Gunn-lovers appreciated the “weird kid” film that was able to sprinkle charming profanities into any line of dialogue. The film revolves around a man named Grant Grant (Michael Rooker) who is infected by an extraterrestrial parasite that transforms him into a monster capable of scalping the hairlines off of people with a flick of a tentacle. The million-year-old parasite wants to destroy the Earth, but it meets its match in Grant s wife Starla (Elizabeth Banks), the foul-mouthed Mayor Jack MacRready (Gregg Henry and a nice The Thing reference), teenager Kylie (Tania Saulnier), and police chief Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion). While the creature effects and slime look excellent, it’s the human characters who steal the show. Fillion in particular feels like he was born to read Gunn’s dialogue, and he has zero issues being the “dude in distress.” In a refreshing twist, Starla and Kylie are the true heroes who battle gross slugs, finish off Grant, and put up with a plethora of profane, annoying men.Slither wears its “weird kid” badge proudly, and the singular vision and script likely hurt its box office chances. That said, the same thing happened to The Thing, Tremors, From Dusk Till Dawn, In the Mouth of Madness, and You’re Next  movies, in other words, that went hard on humor, gore, or tentacles and found their audiences on VHS or DVD.3. Super Pushed the Label Dark Comedy to Its LimitsWhile some of the dialogue in 2011 s Super sounds a bit like fingernails on a chalkboard nowadays, it’s hard to hate on the million-budgeted dark superhero satire about a man named Frank (Rainn Wilson) who really just wants crime to shut up. It’s a grim and grimy experience whose protagonist is a 30-something loner who thinks happy people are arrogant because happiness is overrated, and who fights crime by waiting behind dumpsters for it to happen in front of him. He’s the kind of wet noodle that doesn’t stick to a wall, and mostly does what others tell him to do – he even cooks eggs for Jacques (Kevin Bacon), the drug dealer who stole his wife away from him.Frank s origin story, as it were, is appropriately loony. One day, while watching television and lamenting the loss of his wife, he receives a message from God in the guise of the Holy Avenger (Nathan Fillion). Fueled by delusions of grandeur, Frank becomes The Crimson Bolt, a pipe wrench–wielding vigilante who makes even The Punisher look sane. For added superhero insanity, Frank is compelled to team up with a young psychopath named Libby (Elliot Page), who has to be reminded not to murder people when she s fighting crime. The pair fuel the worst impulses in each other, which produces alternately uncomfortable and violent encounters and ultimately results in Libby s gruesome, untimely death, which comes so unexpectedly it s played both for shock value and for laughs.Super is the rare superhero film that shows how ugly real violence can be. You won’t see Captain America striking a pose as he mows down pseudo-Nazis or Thor looking svelte during a rain-drenched fistfight. What you get is Rainn Wilson breathing heavily as he bludgeons someone with a wrench. Once again, Gunn plumbs the dark channels of his psyche to tell a story about a man who murders criminals so that one woman can right her ship, beat her addictions, and do something good for the world.4. Gunn Experimented – Wildly – With Balancing Humor, Horror, and Violence“I’m tryin’ to get a buzz on, but I can’t. I’m too buff, got too much muscle mass.” With these immortal words, the audience grew to love Slither s Police Chief Bill Pardy, who is terrible with grenades but great with one-liners. Throughout Slither, Pardy keeps things lighthearted even as hundreds of people die and he’s attacked by animatronic deer. When bodies explode, Pardy is there to do something dumb to mitigate the disgust with a dose of levity. It s an effective tool that Gunn would use with great success in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies think lines like “I’m Marry Poppins, y’all” or “I am going to die surrounded by the biggest idiots in the galaxy.”Balancing comedy with horror is a delicate job; you want to provide a release from the tension, but you don’t want the horror to be watered down with too many jokes. The same goes for PG-13 Marvel properties. Gunn couldn’t afford to alienate the mainstream with over-the-top provocative dialogue, but he was able to infuse some Gunn-isms into a very mainstream movie.Gunn has two mainstream R-rated screenplays that have earned Rotten Tomatometer scores, namely Super (49%) and The Belko Experiment (54%). Both films lean heavily into mean territory, and their scripts have difficulty finding a balanced tone. The Belko Experiment largely eschewed humor altogether as director Greg McClean (Rogue, Wolf Creek) chose instead to focus on the darker, more violent aspects of Gunn s script. Super does play up its extreme violence with comedy, but the coarse humor and dialogue feel like an extra weight on the audience s shoulders as they watch a 100-minute violent meltdown. Even so, Gunn s experimentation with tonal shifts is evident in both scripts, and his ability to harness his wildest instincts since then have helped make him a unique filmmaker.5. On Slither, Super, and More, Gunn Perfected Offbeat Group Dynamics and CamaraderieLooking back, it’s clear how James Gunn’s career trajectory led him to success with edgy comic book adaptations like Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming The Suicide Squad.Gunn has thrived when adapting or re-imagining properties for the modern age. The two PG-rated Scooby-Doo movies he wrote pulled in 0 million Scooby snacks domestically (adjusted for inflation); his screenplay for Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead in 2004 helped launch Snyder s career and proved horror remakes don t have to be Rotten; and while Slither and Super weren t instant hits upon release, they’ve become cult classics that helped Gunn refine his skills and gave him insight into eclectic superheroes, visual effects, and time-consuming makeup and prosthetic applications. When it comes to his characters, his past adaptations and scripts share a similar theme, too. The Scooby-Doo films are about a gang of total opposites (and a talking dog) who team up to investigate ghosts and occasionally eat a cotton candy monster alive while it screams in pain. The Specials is about the seventh-best superhero squad on the planet. Dawn of the Dead is about a group of strangers who hide out in a shopping mall during a zombie apocalypse. Slither features a mismatched crew defending the world, and Super is about A-hole “Superheroes” who form an alliance against Kevin Bacon. Heck, even Tromeo and Juliet is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy about two families at war.(Photo by Jay Maidment/Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)In other words, Gunn clearly has a thing for unlikely makeshift families and mismatched strangers thrown together by circumstance themes that echo strongly in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and that will likely play a big role in The Suicide Squad. Gunn has found a way to combine his style with Marvel’s and soon, DC s mainstream sensibilities, and he’s become one of the most well-respected names in the industry. His experiences on both Slither and Super helped him evolve as a director, and you can see their DNA clearly in the blockbuster fare that planted his name squarely on the lips of comic book geeks and superhero movie fans across the world.Slither was released on March 31, 2006. Super was released on April 1, 2011.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News. Today s Ketchup brings you another set of headlines from the world of film development news, covering movies with new roles for Richard Madden, Jessica Chastain, Michael Rooker, Elisabeth Moss, and more. This WEEK S TOP STORYMARVEL S YONDU May SNAP HIS TEETH INTO THE SUICIDE SQUAD AS KING SHARK(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Ever since Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn signed on to direct Warner Bros. and DC Comics The Suicide Squad, there have been rumblings that at least one of his Marvel stars would join him. For a while, there was word that might be Dave Bautista as Peacemaker, until recent news that the role will likely go to fellow professional wrestler John Cena instead. Today, we learned that James Gunn still might reunite with one of his Guardians stars, with Michael Rooker now in talks to play the monstrous villain, King Shark. If you re a fan of TV s The Flash, you might recall that King Shark has had some pretty cool scenes on that show. The Suicide Squad cast will also include Idris Elba, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Warner Bros. has scheduled The Suicide Squad for August 6, 2021. Gunn is expected to return to Marvel Studios for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after he wraps on the DC flick, suggesting a Guardians release date no sooner than 2022.Fresh Developments1. GAME OF THRONES, Bodyguard FAVORITE JOINS MARVEL S THE ETERNALS (Photo by Tony Gonzalez/Everett Collection)We re now within 10 days of the end of HBO s Game of Thrones, so we re in the midst of a wave of new roles for those many actors. The biggest story for a Game of Thrones favorite this week however was for someone whose last episode was nearly six years ago. Richard Madden, who played Robb Stark, the onetime King in the North, is now in talks with Marvel Studios about starring in The Eternals. If he signs on, Madden would be playing Ikaris, who, in the comics, has been a leader of the Eternals in the past. Angelina Jolie is also starring in The Eternals as Sersi (a long-running member of the Avengers in the late 1980s and early 1990s). Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, HBO s Silicon Valley) and South Korea s Ma Dong-Seok are also attached to play unknown characters. There have also been reports that Marvel is looking to cast an openly gay Asian actor, but that role appears to have not yet been cast. The Eternals will be directed by Chloe Zhao (The Rider, Songs My Brothers Taught Me), whose two films to date both have Tomatometer scores above 90%. There is no official release date for The Eternals yet, but if the filming start dates align with the Marvel s put out, it might be November 6, 2020 (after Black Widow, which might come out May 1, 2020).2. DISNEY SCHEDULES NEW STAR WARS MOVIES FOR 2022, 2024, AND 2026 (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Every once in a while, a massive story will come out which is actually several all rolled into one. This week, Disney announced dozens of release dates (or changes), including some pretty seismic revelations. Last September, we heard that Disney planned on slowing down the release of their Star Wars franchise, and we now officially know that there will be a three year gap after this December s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Then, starting with December 16, 2022, there will be Star Wars movies every two years; the next two will arrive in theaters on December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026. What we don t know is what these Star Wars movies actually are. It s known that Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) has plans for a new Star Wars trilogy. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are also developing a trilogy which is rumored to be set in the Old Republic period most seen to date in various video games. (You can check out a breakdown of five places we think the Star Wars franchise can go in the 2020s here.) We think that some of the release date changes are Rotten Ideas, so please continue to that section to read more.3. BLACK PANTHER’s CHADWICK BOSEMAN TO SLASH AGAIN AS SAMURAI YASUKE (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Chadwick Boseman has starred in a few movies now where he was a first. Boseman played baseball groundbreaker Jackie Robinson in 42, he played Thurgood Marshall (the first African American Supreme Court Justice) in Marshall, and of course, Black Panther was a significant first. This week, Boseman signed on for another first in the historical drama Yasuke, in which he will portray the first African samurai in Japan. The historical Yasuke was a Portuguese retainer of Mozambique heritage who was brought to Japan as a slave in the 16th century, making him the first black man to set foot on Japanese soil, [as] Yasuke’s arrival aroused the interest of Nobunaga, a ruthless warlord seeking to unite the fractured country under his banner. It s not yet known who will be directing Yasuke.4. Jane Campion is Back, with Doctor Strange and a Handmaid in Tow(Photo by ©Apparition/courtesy Everett Collection)Marvel Studios has tapped so many top stars (and helped others become stars) that a bunch of new films feature those names. Acclaimed New Zealand director Jane Campion (The Piano) hasn t directed a feature film in 10 years (2009 s Bright Star), and she is now preparing to direct The Power of the Dog, an adaptation of the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage. For this film, Campion has cast Benedict Cumberbatch (Marvel s Doctor Strange) and Elisabeth Moss of the acclaimed Hulu series The Handmaid s Tale. Like 1994 s Legends of the Fall, The Power of the Dog is a story of ranchers in Montana, with Cumberbatch playing a wealthy Montana rancher who engages in a relentless war against his brother s son from a secret marriage to a local widow (played by Moss). The brother and son characters have yet to be cast.5. IT: CHAPTER TWO STAR JESSICA CHASTAIN TO PUT ON THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE (Photo by Kerry Hayes/ © EuropaCorp USA /Courtesy Everett Collection)Nearly 20 years before acclaimed celebrity documentaries like Won t You Be My Neighbor? and RBG, one of the most successful early documentaries in that style was 2001 s The Eyes of Tammy Faye, about televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. Fox Searchlight is preparing to produce a dramatic biopic about Tammy and husband Jim, to also be titled The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Attached so far are Jessica Chastain (IT: Chapter Two, Dark Phoenix) and Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man). Director Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) will be working from a screenplay adapted from the documentary.  There s no word yet about which makeup artist will be hired to work on The Eyes of Tammy Faye, but whomever it is might automatically be in the running for a Hair and Makeup Oscar.6. CHRIS HEMSWORTH AND TIFFANY HADDISH TEAMING UP FOR BUDDY COP COMEDY (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Universal)Chris Hemsworth is proving himself a master at comedic chemistry – witness the splendor of  Lebowski Thor – and a great foil to a strong female co-star (he will be back on screen with Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson in Men in Black: International this summer). The latest female star to sign on to test Hemsworth’s on-screen charisma and comedic chops is Tiffany Haddish, whose career has been blowing up ever since 2017 s Girls Trip. Haddish and Hemsworth will costar together in the buddy cop comedy Down Under Cover, with Haddish playing a cop who teams up with an undercover male stripper police detective.#7. Dark Knight Writer David S. Goyer Rebooting HellraiserJoel MearesBack in the early 2000s, Spyglass Entertainment was a prolific production company which provided Disney s Touchstone with many of its hits, including The Count of Monte Cristo, Shanghai Noon, and 1999 s The Sixth Sense. Spyglass is back in business again as an independent company called the Spyglass Media Group and in the market for new franchises. Their first major project was announced this week: a reboot of the prolific horror series Hellraiser, featuring the erotic horrors of Pinhead and his Cenobite collaborators. When Hellraiser came out over 30 years ago in 1987, there was nothing like it, but since then, movies like Saw and Hostel have made the torture porn horror subgenre almost ubiquitous. Hellraiser is poised to make a big return, and the job of adapting Hellraiser for a new generation is going to David S. Goyer, the screenwriter behind comic book adaptations like Blade, The Dark Knight, and Man of Steel, and this year s Terminator: Dark Fate. It s not yet known exactly how Goyer will reboot Hellraiser.Rotten Ideas2. DISNEY S MASSIVE RELEASE DATE DUMP REVEALS VAST CHANGES(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Pretty much every week, there are new release dates or changes for upcoming movies, but usually it s only for a handful of films. This week, Disney announced such a massive slate of new dates and changes that it s had sort of a tsunami-like impact on the calendar. Disney recently finalized its acquisition of Fox s film properties, and part of its ongoing plan is to slow Fox releases down to 5-6 films a year (cut in half from 12 in 2018). Many Fox films are therefore being delayed or outright canceled. For example, The New Mutants (the last Fox/Marvel movie before Marvel Studios takes over the X-Men and Fantastic Four) was originally scheduled for 2018, and now it s not scheduled to come out until April 3, 2020. Harrison Ford s Call of the Wild (February 21, 2020) is one of the other films pushed back into 2020, as is the long-in-development YA novel adaptation Artemis Fowl (May 29, 2020), though that has always been a Disney movie. Dora and the Lost City of Gold has already swept in to take over Fowl’s original August 9, 2019, release date. Disney s slate is also significant for what it doesn t have, such as Fox s various Marvel movies, like Gambit (with Channing Tatum attached), and projects like X-Force, X-23, Kitty Pryde, and James Franco s Madrox the Multiple Man.1. AVATAR 2 PUSHED BACK TO 2021 (SEVEN YEARS AFTER ITS ORIGINAL 2014 RELEASE DATE) (Photo by @ 20th Century Fox)Up until this week, it was believed that Avatar 2 would be released next year, on December 18, 2020, following years of delays from its original release date in December 2014. This week, as Disney also revealed an every-two-years rotation of Star Wars movies in 2022, 2024, and 2026, they did the same thing for the upcoming Avatar sequels. The four Avatar sequels (yes, James Cameron is really working on four sequels) are now scheduled for December releases in the odd years: Avatar 2 (December 17, 2021), Avatar 3 (December 22, 2023), Avatar 4 (December 19, 2025), and Avatar 5 (December 17, 2027). Paramount Pictures took quick advantage of the vacuum left by the Avatar 2 move, pushing their own sequel, Coming to America 2, back to December 18, 2020. By doing that, Paramount also made room for the science-fiction drama Infinite, starring Chris Evans, on August 7, 2020. For their own part, Disney also replaced Avatar 2 with their own films, the double feature of Steven Spielberg s West Side Story remake on December 18, 2020, followed by Cruella (the live-action 101 Dalmatians starring Emma Stone), five days later on December 23, 2020. We can expect the next few weeks to have more release date changes from Disney s competitor studios.Like this? 5.12.2 6月喜迎(Photo by Rico Torres/©Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)When Robert Rodriguez burst onto the independent movie scene at the Sundance Film Festival with his scrappy low-budget genre debut El Mariachi, he instantly made a name for himself. Touting his film’s extraordinarily small budget of ,000 –– raised mostly from the director subjecting himself to medical testing –– Rodriguez established himself as a resourceful filmmaker, detailing his process in his book Rebel Without a Crew, now considered a film school classic. If El Mariachi proved what Rodriguez could do with a meager budget and a cast of mostly friends, what more could he accomplish if he had fancy pyrotechnics, large sets, and professional actors? The answer was Desperado, a better-funded follow-up to El Mariachi that built on the mythology of a mysterious guitar player with a music case full of guns and ammunition. It was a big step up from his previous four-figure budget: Desperado cost around million, or 1,000 times more than the cost of his first feature. Fortunately, audiences flocked to Desperado and helped establish Rodriguez as an exciting new filmmaker with ideas for offbeat movies like the Spy Kids series, a love of genre that influenced films like From Dusk Till Dawn and Machete, and an eye for action that shaped movies like Sin City and Alita: Battle Angel.Although Desperado met with mixed reviews on its release 25 years ago on August 25, 1995, there’s still a lot to enjoy from Rodriguez’s sophomore effort. It’s a movie that promises explosion-laden spectacle, choreographed gun battles, visual humor, and Antonio Banderas playing guitar and it delivers on all fronts. It Shows Off Robert Rodriguez s Playful Style(Photo by Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Whether it’s a deadly gunfight that ends in a tense draw over empty pistols, or a throwaway gag that forces the movie’s heroine to wear two mismatching heels through its explosive climax, Rodriguez, who both wrote and directed the film, has an eye for visual humor. Desperado never takes itself too seriously despite all of its violence and explosions, as Rodriguez incorporates punchlines in both subtle and overt ways. Sometimes, the effect is achieved with a simple sign that reads “Members and Non Members Only.” Other times, it’s as obvious as a ceiling fan that continues to smack a dead bad guy in the face after he’s down; only when El Mariachi (Banderas) shoots the fan does it actually stop.Another aspect of Rodriguez’s visual style is his unabashed love of spilling fake blood. A handful of deaths occur off-screen, announced by splatters of bright red that splash across other characters   a tip of the hat to 70s horror and spaghetti western classics that, in their time, used shocking amounts of gore to thrill audiences. Sometimes, though, blood is used more subtly, as when a wounded El Mariachi leans on a wall and leaves a crimson trail behind him as he brushes against it. It shows the audience he’s wounded, still mortal even though it seems no one can kill him, and in the next scene, still capable of fighting back faster than any unfortunate soul who tries to pull a gun on him. Whether it’s the tint of fake blood, the rouge undertones of certain buildings, or the burning intensity of an explosion, the color red plays an important role in the look of Desperado. It Introduced Salma Hayek to a Broader AudiencePrior to her role
threat. In his debut story, The Amazing Spider-Man #13, special effects wiz Quentin Beck used gas to stymie Peter’s Spider-sense and devised a means to counteract his webbing. He also framed Spider-Man for a bank robbery. He would continue to use his gift for creating illusions to baffle Spider-Man, his friends, and even Aunt May for decades to come. And in Far From Home, it appears the monsters Peter faces known in Marvel Comics as The Elementals will turn out to be Mysterio’s creations. Considering his only line in the trailer is “you don’t want any part of this,” followed by a shot of him battling the water monster, we’re going to guess Mysterio plans to set himself up as a counterfeit hero to divert attention from his real scheme. And, y’know, framing Spider-Man may still be part of that plan. He gets framed at least three times a year.4. A New Spider-Suit(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)It wouldn’t be a Spider-Man movie without Peter getting a new Spider-suit. And the black, armor-padded one glimpsed in the teaser echoes the look of Spider-Man Noir from the comic book of the same name (and the inspiration for the character featured in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), though it also shares some similarities to the “Dark” suit which first appeared in Spider-Man/Deadpool #8. For incredible plot reasons, that suit came into being because Peter talked to Mephisto, the demon who erased Peter’s memory of his marriage to Mary Jane Watson (a very, very long story). The padding also recalls an early armored suit from the 1990s. Spider-Man has had a lot of suits over the years, which means the feature films have a lot of latitude in what they can do with Spider-Man’s look. Also, it seems as though his Stark Industries suit also had an upgrade. It appears to be black and red, with the red taking on a darker hue than before. It looks great on film and we re going to assume its a replacement for the one he will presumably lose in Endgame. Y know, once he returns from nothingness.5. Happy Is Cool With Aunt May(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)Happy (Jon Favreau) makes two appearances in the trailer. In the latter moment, he seems to be giving Peter some sort of pep talk about saving his friends. But the earlier moment has a lot going on. For one thing, he’s flirting with Aunt May. Granted, just about every straight male in the MCU ends up flirting with her at some point; it is a constant joke in Homecoming. But the silliness of the moment obscures a potentially key detail.Just before the flirting starts, Happy walks into the homeless shelter’s kitchen with a 0,000 novelty check from Synchrony Bank – purveyors of Marvel’s credit card here in the real world – signed by Pepper Potts. On the check, she is listed as “Co-Founder and Chair, Stark Relief Foundation.” While the organization has been part of the MCU since the Battle of New York (as referenced in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Homecoming), Happy’s appearance and Pepper’s large signature both point to a strange absence in Peter’s world. Where is Tony Stark? That question puts the teaser – and any trailer that might appear before Avengers: Endgame’s April 26th release – in a precarious spot. Should Tony sacrifice himself for the sake of the universe in Endgame, Peter will feel that loss and, presumably, reference it at some point in Far From Home. But the happy-go-lucky feel of this first teaser works around that possibility. It also suggests the rumored Endgame time-jump may also not occur. Unless, of course, Far From Home is set before Infinity War. But the teaser also features some glimpses of a world still rebuilding itself after The Snap and whatever happens in Endgame, so maybe Tony s absence is just a ruse for those looking too closely. Or, it could be a clue.Spider-Man: Far From Home opens on July 5.

reenlit the big-screen adaptation of Downton Abbey may be getting a nice bonus for the holiday. Brad Pitt and John Rambo were no match for the Crawley family this weekend, as Downton defied expectations and topped the box office with a cool million. The hit movie also grossed more this weekend than 109 of the Focus’s 133 releases grossed total since the company debuted with Billy Elliot back in 2000.King of the Crop: Downton Abbey Lords It Over the Competition, Sets Sights on 0 MillionJoel MearesThe numbers for Downton Abbey are pretty staggering. Tracking services had it lowballed to - million at first (only to later balloon up to around double that) but it seems its fanbase was loyal enough to show up and pay for something they got free from 2010-15. Focus really pulled something special off here. The studio has certainly put out a number of critically-acclaimed films over the years, including Atonement, Lost in Translation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – and Downton is no exception, Certified Fresh at 85% on the Tomatometer – but their highest opening weekend until now was Insidious: Chapter 3, which grossed .6 million in 2015.Downton Abbey has already eclipsed that and now has its eye on Focus’s all-time grosser. Worldwide, that title belongs to the Gerard Butler sequel, London Has Fallen, which made over 5 million, but domestically it is the Oscar-winning Brokeback Mountain, grossing million. The only big-screen adaptations to start with over million and not reach that number are the comedies Bruno (.05 million) and The Dukes of Hazzard (.27 million) and if that is possible, could 0 million possibly be on the table too? For perspective, Hustlers opened to a similar .1 million last week and dipped 49% to million for a total of million after 10 days. That puts it roughly a million dollars ahead of the 2016 Magnificent Seven remake, which topped out at .4 million. Will Downton Abbey be frontloaded or do adults finally have a nice PG-rated film they can recommend to their friends? The Top 10 and Beyond: Ad Astra Made A Smart Move, Rambo Takes One Last (?) Go at Box Office Glory(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Industry watchers had one thing right about this week’s box office race: it was a crowded top five. Coming up with a narrow victory for second place was James Gray’s Ad Astra. Originally slated for a May release with nary a first trailer out there yet in April, Fox smartly moved it to a September slot. That likely made them a few more bucks as nearly everything was being swallowed up that month by Avengers: Endgame, though they were probably hoping for an opening in the million region. A .2 million start is in the middle of Pitt’s headliners and while critics are supporting the film (it s Certified Fresh at 83%), audiences may find its introspective approach to sci-fi challenging. We’ll set the first estimate for the film between million and million, which means the international audience will have to chip in to cover the reported  million budget. The film has grossed an additional million outside North America. From one film challenging the notion of the alpha male to one that s the embodiment of it, Rambo: Last Blood in all its 78-minute glory (sans credits) hit theaters as well. (The film runs longer in international markets thanks to an opening prologue cut from American audiences.) If we consider inflation to chart the course of the series: First Blood back in 1982 would have opened to .6 million and go on to gross 5.5 million; things exploded in 1985 when Rambo: First Blood Part II opened with the equivalent of a .1 million first weekend and earned a 8 million final haul; Rambo III in 1988 would have started with .2 million in today’s dollars and finish with 6.4 million. Thirty years later, Rambo would equate to a .6 million start and a .9 million finish. Now in 2019, Last Blood has started with million and is likely to drop off with the same expediency as the fourth entry, which may get the film to between million and million.(Photo by Brooke Palmer/© 2019 WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT INC.)In a strange coincidence – they re both movies about malevolent creatures terrorizing children – It: Chapter Two is right behind last year’s big-screen animated version of The Grinch after 17 days of release. With 9.17 million after a .25 million third weekend, the movie is more on par with Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds and Solo: A Star Wars Story than any of the animated and family films with a similar tally. We are dropping its final estimate slightly from last week down to 0-5 million; the film has grossed over 2 million worldwide to date. In milestones this weekend, Hobbs Shaw crossed the 0 million mark and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood passed 0 million on the international market, bringing its worldwide total to 4 million. Finally, Amazon keeps trying but has not been able to get Brittany Runs a Marathon into the top 10, where it can get some further headlines. The film finished 12th this weekend in 1,033 theaters, grossing .5 million for a total of million, the studio’s third-highest domestic grosser to date. On the plus side, that is more than Warner Bros.’ The Goldfinch, which fell 71% this weekend and has made just .5 million to date. This Time Last Year: Audiences Chose PG Chills Over Political Thrills(Photo by © Universal Pictures)As The Nun was passing the 0 million mark, Eli Roth’s PG-rated children’s film, The House with a Clock In Its Walls, opened at number 1 with .6 million, while Michael Moore’s documentary about Donald Trump, Fahrenheit 11/9, was roundly ignored and opened in eighth place with just million. That is still better than two of the lowest per-theater-averages of the year that did not even make the top 10: Amazon’s Life Itself, which made just .12 million in 2,609 theaters for a 4 PTA and Neon’s Assassination Nation, which made .05 million in 1,403 theaters for a 8 PTA. The top 10 films grossed a total of .31 million and averaged 63.9% on the Tomatometer; this weekend’s top 10 grossed an estimated 3.91 million, which is good enough for the third-best September weekend ever for the top 10 films. The Tomatometer had a nearly identical average with 63.8%.

eople together to create something and then shift them all around the world? And what do you do with actors that are in a love scene? It’s complicated.” In related news, the biopic Going Electric, starring Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan, is also on hold due to the pandemic because it was to have been filmed all in small clubs with lots of extras in period costumes, so you’ve got lots of hair and makeup.”9. GUARDIAN OF THE GALAXY DAVE BAUTISTA IS ALSO UNIVERSE S MOST WANTED (Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)We still don t when exactly director James Gunn and Marvel Studios will be able to reunite again for a third Guardians of the Galaxy (definitely don t expect it before 2023), but one of that film s stars is striking out on his own in a new sci-fi fantasy. Dave Bautista (A.K.A. Drax) will produce and star in an ambitious sci-fi action movie called Universe s Most Wanted, in which he will play an intergalactic peacekeeper who teams up with the son of a small town sheriff when a spaceship carrying the universe’s most wanted and dangerous criminals crash lands in their backyard. If that premise sounds familiar, that may be because it is extremely similar to the 1986 sci-fi cult favorite Critters, except, of course, the aliens in Universe s Most Wanted will probably be very different. Universe s Most Wanted will be directed by Brad Peyton, who has previously worked three times with one of Dave Bautista s former wrestling co-stars, Dwayne Johnson, on Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (Rotten at 45%), San Andreas (Rotten at 50%), and the video game movie Rampage (51%, Peyton s highest RT score). On an Apple device?
