The effect is insidious. If you are a young Black actress in Hollywood today and given a script with “Oscar potential” – say, one playing a historical figure like Shirley Chisholm (the first Black woman to run for president) or Mae Carol Jemison (the first Black female astronaut in space) – you could take the role, be lauded by critics, become a hit with audiences, and yet you would do so with the full knowledge that it will likely come up short of consideration for your profession s highest honor. The safer bet now, as it ever was, is to play a slave.(Photo by © Neon)And what is the impact of that calculus and its repetition? We will continue to see a certain type of role and character repeatedly rewarded, and the cycle will go on.These tales of slaves and maids and more are incredibly valuable and relevant stories to tell and lives to portray, and the performances – Erivo’s included – can be mind-blowingly good. But they are not the only stories worth being told or the only characters worthy of recognition. The world of ideas shrinks incredibly when we don’t see the full array of the Black experience represented and rewarded, whether that be the life of a 1950s maid or a modern-day prison warden or a school teacher or an astronaut or a twentysomething looking to party hard in New Orleans. Or the life of Aretha Franklin, whom Jennifer Hudson will play on the big screen this year, and Erivo herself will play on TV.Hattie McDaniel could never dream of playing a megastar musician. She won her Oscar for playing a maid, and made a living playing similar roles. She’s drawn criticism for taking so many “Mammy” jobs, but countered that it was her only real option for regular work at the time. She famously said it was far better to make Seven hundred dollars a week playing a maid than earn seven a day being a maid.” In that sense, some progress has been made. The variety of roles available to actresses of color may still be limited, but it s vaster than it ever has been. It would be great to see that better reflected on future nominations mornings. Are you as obsessed with awards as we are? Check out our Awards Leaderboard for 2019/2020.

Harry Potter and His Hogwarts Friends May Be Headed to Streaming(Photo by Warner Bros.)The only true surprise about Harry Potter finding his way to television is that it’s taken this long. Rowling’s wildly successful seven-book, eight-movie series to TV is in the “extremely early stages,” according to the report, with no cast attached. Keene’s personal experience, as an inmate offered freedom for getting a suspected killer to confess, is the story of the book.Egerton, who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Elton John in the biopic Rocketman, would play the Keene role, with, presumably, Richard Jewel star Hauser playing the alleged serial killer.Lehane, the novelist who has also written for The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, and The Outsider, will write and executive produce the limited series. Season 4 opens with Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy) having wiped the memories of several series leads, including Quentin, Penny (Arjun Gupta), Margo (Summer Bishil), Kady (Jade Tailor), and Josh (Trevor Einhorn), which gives them new identities and no knowledge of magic. Alice (Olivia Taylor Dudley) still has her memories, but she’s imprisoned by the Head Librarian (Mageina Tovah) for breaking her deal with the Library. With the help of Dean Fogg, the Library has harnessed magic and is now portioning out its use – an arrangement that no one else is happy about. Meanwhile, Eliot (Hale Appleman) picked up a dark passenger in the season 3 finale: He’s now possessed by a childlike, sociopathic ancient being whose idea of play involves murder as sport. We got a fix on TV and streaming’s favorite magical millennials during our visit. Here’s what they and McNamara had to say about the characters and season 4.Olivia Taylor Dudley as Alice“At the beginning of the season we pick up where we left off: Alice is in the Library Jail for the first few episodes, and she is locked away, and is miserable. It s not a good place to be and Alice is the only one of the main cast who doesn t have a glamour, and she doesn t know that they do. So, she s in there with zero information; last she knows she may have killed all of her friends — she s not sure!“So, she s kind of losing her mind in this little jail cell … The only other person I got to work with was my cellmate across the way who we don t even get to see — we re just talking through air vents in the ceiling.“It was some of my favorite scenes, actually as an actor the exercise of working alone in a cell and having a ton of dialogue with someone on a different wall was really fun … The first few episodes is Alice just trying to escape and trying to figure out if her friends are alive. Then the rest of the season — I ve been calling this season Alice’s redemption tour; she s going on a journey to gain her friends love and trust back, and it s not necessarily easy for most of them — especially Quentin, who takes the longest and — everyone has their feelings about what she did at the end of last year.“Alice still stands by it — or at least I do, maybe Alice doesn t, but Olivia does! Because in her mind she s just a very practical, smart woman, and she concluded at the end of the last season that magic is hurting and killing everyone she loves, so let s get rid of it! But what happens is one person can t make the decision for everybody; as we know, it doesn t work out well. So, she tried to save everybody and it backfired, so this year she s kind of sitting back, and I m trying to take her back to a little bit more of season 1 Alice — quietly thinking, plotting, and planning instead of just acting, because even she knows she s smart and has the power now. So, this year was really fun for me in making her a little bit softer than she s been the last two seasons. Niffin Alice really rubbed off on her, a lot, so now she s trying to get rid of that edge and just be with her friends, and she falls in love with magic again this year which was one of my favorite things about this season.”Jason Ralph as Quentin“That sort of ‘Avengers assemble’ vibe is very true, I think, to this group. It took a while to figure out what everyone s strengths were, and what everyone s purpose was in the group, and those lanes have now been defined, and so the way we make decisions is quicker. We don t have to sit down and figure everything out. It s like when a problem arises, we know that Quentin is going to be the idiot, and Penny is going to travel us, and Margo is going to beat the shit out of someone.“I think Quentin s always considered himself sort of a leader. I notice that there s that internal conflict, where he feels not good enough, and maybe not. I think he wants to be the person meant to be the leader, and is at odds with the fact that sometimes that s not true, or when the opportunity to be the leader presents itself, that he s maybe not up for it. That, I think, has been his conflict through all of this. I don t know that that goes away. I think he would definitely want to be, and sometimes he was, and sometimes he s not. Like all of us, right? That s what s so lovely about the characters and about the world: no one is one thing, and we do fail all the time, and we want to be things that we re not, and the grass is always greener.”Stella Maeve as Julia“She grapples with [her loss of powers] in season 4 … The way the writers described it to me was like a weird purgatory. So I think she s kind of just trying to figure that out throughout the season: What am I doing? What is this meaning? Is this a message, and what is my purpose?“This is the most fun I have in a long time. It s awesome. I got to hang out with Hale which is really cool … I ve never had really any dialogue with Margo, and this is the first season I ve had any dialogue with Eliot — it s not really Eliot, it s monster Eliot, so it s kind of wild.”Arjun Gupta as Penny“I was unique in the situation where my character, my glamour character was completely different from Penny. He s DJ Hansel. He s the dude that went to India for two weeks and came back enlightened. And like wants to share and wants everybody to know how enlightened he is. Like always wears clothes from Thailand even though he went there once. Like that kind of person who s very ungrounded. Very like loose and free. Very free in his body which is different from Penny. So actually it was really fun. It was incredibly exciting.“I have to shout out Tarun Keram who was also with me. Because it s not just myself playing Hansel, Tarun was there playing him as well, because there are definitely shots of the scene where it s not me at all. It s like a different person. So basically the point of view of what like anyone outside of us in the world of The Magicians would see, wouldn t look like me, Penny, at all. It was a different human. So that was really cool and it was fun to work with him and he was amazing. It s an awkward situation for him because it s my character but also I wanted him, he wants to put in his own input. And he was really lovely and we just had a blast doing it, yeah.”Jade Tailor as Kady“I loved this season, for so many reasons. From a character standpoint, Kady had a huge t九游会官网网站一战九天是2021年刚刚上线不久的热血神途传奇手游,玩家在这里可以体验千人同屏攻沙夺宝的刺激玩法,同时游戏内有着非常经典的三职业玩法,玩家在这里绝度不会玩腻疲劳。

In addition to these icons, wand-twirlers from Penny Dreadful, True Blood, Once Upon a Time, and Bewitched also make an appearance. So break out the bubbling cauldrons and dust off that flying broom as it s time to rank these TV witches from best to worst below. And if you don’t see your favorite magic-conjurer on our list, tell us in the comments!
Stranger Things returns July 4 to a warm reception from critics for its new season. The first reviews out propelled the season 3 to Certified Fresh status within the day on Sunday, in one of the fastest designations in Rotten Tomatoes history. The series sets its third season in the summer, starting out all warm breezes, sunny skies, baking skin, splashing pools, and young romance. But this is Hawkins, Indiana, and stranger things lurk beneath that veneer of 80s suburban normalcy.Cue the Netflix series Goonies-like crew: supernatural Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Will (Noah Schnapp), Max (Sadie Sink), Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), and Steve (Joe Keery).Parents and other siblings also return, including scene-stealing Priah Ferguson as Lucas sister Erica, Dacre Montgomery as Max s bully brother Billy, and, of course, Winona Ryder as Will and Jonathan s mom Joyce and David Harbour as police chief Jim Hopper, who last season adopted the role as Eleven s father in attachment if not legally. In season 3, their bond is stronger than ever.See what critics had to say about Stranger Things: Season 3 (2019) 89% below.Something Old(Photo by Netflix) Reliable, durable and comfortable, ST3 is what you d expect and certainly what you want, if what you want is seasons 1 and 2, with a few big twists along the way. — Verne Gay, NewsdaySomething New(Photo by Netflix) Our heroes are not the goofy young kids they used to be. Nearly 60 years ago in 1962, King Kong and Godzilla squared off in Japan, and King Kong shoved a giant tree into Godzilla’s mouth. The two would engage in a back-and-forth battle that featured atomic breath and lightning strikes, and King Kong would ultimately leave the grueling brawl victorious. The Ishirō Honda-directed film, King Kong vs. Godzilla, was the third Godzilla film produced by Toho Studios, and it was a wildly ambitious crossover event that was a smashing success in Japan, as it sold 11.2 million tickets during its initial theatrical run. In other words, audiences went bananas for it.Decades later, both Godzilla and King Kong have appeared in dozens of movies and animated series that have seen them battling three-headed monsters, genetically-modified roses with sharp teeth, and New York concrete. The two haven’t shared a screen together since that colossal battle in 1962, which is why the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong feels like such an epic event. To get to this brawl, Legendary Studios embarked on a kaiju-sized film series called the “MonsterVerse” that kicked off in 2014 with Godzilla (2014), then continued with Kong: Skull Island (2017) and, most recently, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). The three films have set the chess pieces, and now the two gigantic titans will tussle for the ultimate checkmate.(Photo by Everett Collection)In honor of their rematch, we rewatched the King Kong vs. Godzilla Versus episode that was released in 2019 and analyzed their filmographies in an attempt to crown a statistical champion based on box office receipts, property destruction, amount of screen time, and Tomatometer and Audience scores. Two monsters (and their many variations) enter, and only one leaves (unless there’s a tie, in which case, come back for the rematch).*Quick note Not all of the King Kong and Godzilla films have Tomatometer scores or reliable box office data. That’s why the numbers fluctuate in each round. Also, we’re sticking to feature-length films, and leaving out the animated series that both have appeared in.Round 1 TomatometerGodzilla: 61.8% average (32 films)King Kong: 55.8% average (8 films)Highest rated: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), 100%Lowest rated: King Kong Lives (1986), 0%(Photo by TriStar courtesy Everett Collection)It’s only fitting that we kick off the battle with an incredibly close match-up in which the Tomatometer averages are separated by a measly 3.8%. Both franchises started off really well as 1933 s King Kong (Certified Fresh at 98% on the Tomatometer) and 1954 s Godzilla (Certified Fresh at 93%) were both blockbusters that wowed people with their innovative photography and beautiful miniature sets. However, the quality of the films began to mirror one of Godzilla’s fights He’s winning! He’s losing… He’s winning! He’s losing…What sealed the deal for Godzilla’s victory is the 0% score for 1986’s King Kong Lives. The movie famously tells the story of what happens after Kong survives the fall from the Empire State Building. In short, he gets a heart transplant, eats some alligators, finds a soulmate, and fathers a child. The dreaded 0% Tomatometer score reeks about as much as Godzilla’s atomic breath, and it took 29 years before Peter Jackson’s Certified Fresh King Kong put the titan back on the big screen in 2005.Godzilla: 1 Kong: 0Round 2 Audience ScoreGodzilla: 59.5% average (33 films)King Kong 46.8% average (8 films)Highest rated: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, 95%Lowest rated: King Kong Lives, 17%(Photo by TriStar courtesy Everett Collection)With an almost Fresh 59.5% Audience Score average, Godzilla wins another round.
George R.R. Martin signs a reported eight-figure deal to develop more HBO and HBO Max programming, Indira Varma is among the new stars confirmed for Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi, Colin Firth will lead an eight-episode drama adaptation of classic true-crime docuseries The Staircase, and more of the week s top TV and streaming news.TOP STORYThe Game of Thrones Broadway Production Will Be a Prequel Story Featuring Ned Stark and Jaime Lannister(Photo by HBO )George R. R. Martin’s Game Of Thrones universe looks to dominate TV land for years to come, and now he has his sights set on The Great White Way: Martin is developing a Thrones stage show that he’s planning for a Broadway debut in 2023, THR reports. The production, which is also planned for London and Australia, will revolve around a prequel storyline, with characters deceased in the TV GoT timeline, like Ned Stark and Jaime Lannister, alive and kicking in the stage show. Despite the many GOT prequel stories being developed for TV, the play would mark the first time beloved characters from the HBO series will be revived for a new project. The play will specifically revolve around a historical event from Westeros’ past: The Great Tourney at Harrenhal, “a landmark event that previously was shrouded in mystery … a story centered around love, vengeance, madness and the dangers of dealing in prophecy … revealing secrets and lies that have only been hinted at until now,” according to THR. Given that setting, characters like Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, legendary knight Arthur Dayne,  Robert Baratheon, Jaime Lannister, and Ned Stark would appear, likely as teenagers. Ned s sister Lyanna would also feature prominently, as her relationship with the prince — the spark that leads to Robert s Rebellion against the Mad King — is established publicly at the tournament. In other GOT news, George R.R. Martin just signed a five-year, eight-figure deal to create yet more programming for HBO and HBO Max.With half a dozen new projects in his A Song of Ice and Fire universe already in various states of development at HBO, Martin is also executive producing a pair of adaptations of other fantasy creators’ works for the network. The very busy author, producer, and entrepreneur also has a series in development at Peacock, a feature film to be directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, and, THR reports, even a theme park ride, via his experiential immersive entertainment company.Star Trek First Contact Day: Trekkies Gathering Online to Celebrate a Pivotal AnniversaryAs any devoted Trekkie – and anyone who saw the big-screen movie Star Trek: First Contact – knows, April 5, 2063, is the future date when humans first make contact with Vulcans, marking the historical beginning of collaboration, exploration, and acceptance in Trek history. 275 Want-to-See Votes#3 pick by our Facebook fans, #4 pick by our Instagram and Twitter fansOpens May 24What if the Superman origin story were twisted into something darker and more ominous? That s essentially the log line for this supernatural horror film, which centers on an alien child who crash-lands on Earth, finds a home with two loving human parents, and eventually grows up to become an agent of terror. With Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn s name in the credits (he s one of the producers) and a unique spin on the traditional superhero tale, the movie has raised fan expectation higher than your run-of-the-mill horror flick.5a. Aladdin (2019) 57%459 Want-to-See Votes#5 pick by our Twitter fansOpens on May 24Last up, we ve got another one of those pesky ties, so we ll start with the second of Disney s three live-action reimaginings of classic animated films from their library the first was Dumbo, which opened back in March. Folks have been a little skeptical of the remake ever since Will Smith was announced in the role of Genie, mostly because the late Robin Williams work in the role is so iconic. But that backlash seems to have died down a bit, leaving fans curious and even a little cautiously optimistic. We ll just have to wait and see how it turns out.5b. Rocketman (2019) 89%288 Want-to-See Votes#5 pick by our Facebook and Instagram fansOpens on May 31Lastly, we have the Elton John biopic starring Taron Egerton as the man himself. Many are already calling the film this year s Bohemian Rhapsody, as it charts the rise of the celebrated musician from his days at the Royal Academy for Music to his fruitful partnership with songwriter Bernie Taupin. Though it s difficult to say whether or not Rocketman will experience the kind of success that Bohemian Rhapsody did, it certainly appeals to the same audience, and it makes for a nice bit of counterprogramming for Godzilla: King of the Monsters.Like this? After an almost year-long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the most anticipated movie musical in years – Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights – is finally arriving on the big screen and HBO Max this month, and the cast and creators couldn’t be more excited to share it with the world. Ahead of the film’s release, Rotten Tomatoes’ correspondent Naz Perez spoke with Miranda and Chu about adapting the stage phenomenon for the big screen and the care that went into bringing the Latinx NYC neighborhood of Washington Heights to vivid, detail-rich life. Plus, Miranda, Chu, and stars Anthony Ramos, Leslie Grace, Corey Hawkins, Dascha Palanco, Daphne Rubin-Vega, and scene-stealing Olga Merediz talk about the “goosebumps” they got from seeing their culture represented in a way cinema has rarely seen, putting together the epic showstopping sequence for fan-favorite song “96,000,” and why they’re so thrilled for America to meet the characters of In the Heights and discover their dreams. In the Heights is in theaters and on HBO Max from Thursday June 10, 2021On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News. 1. Steven Spielberg Remains Very Much InvolvedExecutive Producer Steven Spielberg, who also produced the original Animaniacs and was involved in every aspect of production, returns for the revival. Wellesley Wild, one of the two new showrunners, told Rotten Tomatoes that the new episodes are very much the brainchild of Spielberg, who gets an appearance in the very first of the new episodes with a Jurassic Park parody. Steven really wanted to set the show in the right direction from the start, Wild explained. He really had a specific vision for the show in mind, and we tried to realize what he had in his head, to imbue the show with the balance of cartoon violence, satire, and meta-humor from the original episodes. 2. It s Just Like You Remember, But With Some Updates(Photo by Amblin Television/Warner Bros. Animation)A lot has changed in animation over the past 22 years. Not only in the way shows are made, but also in what they do and say. Animaniacs is no longer the only comedy with meta-humor in a world with Community or Adventure Time. So there s a lot riding on the new episodes to feel both like the originals, while also doing something that contemporary cartoons aren t doing, and co-showrunner Gabe Swarr knows this. In the olden days they used different animation studios for different episodes, Swarr said. So we contacted one of them directly and asked how they went about it and really leaned into the way they animated the characters. Adhering and staying as close as possible to the original and only changing what was necessary to bring it up to date was the number one goal, Wild added. We re obviously pulling from more relevant social commentary and cultural events; for example, Dot flexes her feminist muscles a little more in the revival than she did in the original, and she s sort of a more assertive character. 3. It s Like No Time Has Passed for the Cast(Photo by Amblin Television/Warner Bros. Animation)Though Animaniacs has new writers and showrunners, the main cast remains the same, with Rob Paulsen, Jess Harnell, Tress MacNeille, and Maurice LaMarche returning as Yakko (and Pinky), Wakko, Dot (and Brain), respectively.Though the show has been off the air for 22 years, the cast has never been as ready to return to being zany. It was like putting on a favorite pair of pants, LaMarche said. It was great, man. Literally falling back into something we ve loved all these years and nobody needed any reminders. It was just like getting the band back together. Harnell agreed:  The thing is that we ve been doing the Comic-Con circuit for at least 10 years, and we do script readings where people want to interact with us as Pinky and the Brain, or Wakko the Great Wakkorotti. Those muscles have been kept in shape for a decade at least, just waiting to be brought out into actual animated cells. 4. Expect New Music Genres and Parodies(Photo by Amblin Television/Warner Bros. Animation)One of the most memorable aspects of Animaniacs is its music, particularly its songs. What other show is able to make a song rhyming every word in the dictionary, or every U.S. President until Clinton? So expectations are high for the new songwriter team to stand out at a time where animated shows with musical numbers are not a rarity anymore. Still, there may be a few surprises up the show s sleeve. There are so many new genres that have become popular since the show ended in the late nineties, Wild said. So we re using K-pop, reggaeton, and just about everything in the new episodes. Harnell teased the return of Broadway-style numbers. Without giving too much away, I can say that we did a really amazing parody of one of my all-time favorite Broadway musicals, Harnell said.Animaniacs has always maintained a balance between modern references and obscure, classic-Hollywood references, so to have a song parody the 1959 William Castle horror film The Tingler is a good sign for fans of the original episodes. There is an episode in which Dr. Scratchansniff sings a song about the Tickler, who s like this scary thing like the Tingler, Paulsen said.5. One Joke Was Changed Because of the Pandemic(Photo by Amblin Television/Warner Bros. Animation)Though Animaniacs prides itself on speaking about current issues, animation takes a long time to be produced. The first of the new episodes even comments on the lag and includes a segment
