Recently, Rotten Tomatoes expanded our list of the best-reviewed LGBTQ movies of all time to 200 films. We dive deeper into one of the best movies on that list, The Birdcage, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. As the kind of sissy boy whom my schoolmates scolded for my lack of soccer skills and my predilection for choir practice (I was a soprano, naturally), I spent much of my childhood wrestling with my own seemingly insufficient masculinity. Despite how obviously I failed at performing manliness, I was wracked with anxiety about how I knew I should act. This is not as uncommon an experience as I felt it was. Whether you grew up in Colombia, as I did, or in the South of France or in Miami, the pressures of acting like a man were as soul-crushing as they were laughable. This is what one of my favorite movies growing up taught me, though not until I revisited it decades later. The Birdcage is, above all, a farce about masculinity. About its frailty and its attendant anxieties. Based on Édouard Molinaro’s La Cage aux Folles, Mike Nichols’s broad comedy stars Robin Williams (in khakis and a Selleck-ish mustache) and Nathan Lane (in linen pants and the occasional wig) as Armand and Albert Goldman. The couple run the The Birdcage, a drag club in South Beach where Albert (as “Starina”) is its greatest star. When Armand s son Val (Dan Futterman) informs him that he’s going to  marry his girlfriend Barbara (Calista Flockhart) he caveats the good news with a request: might he go along with the white lie Barbara told her ultra-conservative parents, Senator Kevin Keeley (Gene Hackman) and his wife Louise (Dianne Wiest), that Armand is a straight cultural attaché?(Photo by MGM Home Entertainment / Everett Collection)The comedy stems from the failed attempts at keeping the charade of a heterosexual (and heteronormative) Goldman family. If Albert cannot present himself to the Keeleys as Armand’s partner, by god he’ll do it as Val’s definitely-not-gay uncle, a scenario that gives Lane every delicious comic beat he could ever hope to play. In one of the scenes that I could probably still perform from memory, Albert tries to butch himself up. He practices spreading some mustard on some toast only to be scolded by his frustrated lover: “Don’t use the spoon! And don’t dribble little dots of mustard: men smear! Smear!”The film was a staple of my teenage years. Whenever it was on cable we’d watch it as a family. We’d laugh in unison as we saw Lane’s flailing attempts to walk straight, only to end up deciding to pass himself off as Val’s mother in surprisingly convincing Old Lady drag. My laughter was, during those family viewings, comforting and discomfiting in equal measure. I laughed at Lane’s femininity in a way that I hoped inoculated my own. What a laughable stereotype, I thought. Thank god I’m not that gay, I reassured myself, still in the closet. I may be called a ‘marica’ in school, but surely I pass more easily than this out-of-drag drag queen. I loved the film precisely because it gave me room for such distance.(Photo by MGM Home Entertainment / Getty Collection)By the time I got to college, that kind of thinking led me to a revisionist understanding of the film that felt all the more insidious: it’s films like these – big broad comedies trafficking in caricature – that fuel the homophobia around me. Couldn’t we do better? Couldn’t we be more than punchlines? Did we have to be effeminate gay men with high-pitched voices who couldn’t hold their pinkies in check when “smearing” our toast? It’s only slowly dawned on me how much I came to project onto The Birdcage which, Hank Azaria’s lisping “Guatemalanness” aside, is a wholly assured satire about homophobia a

(Photo by New Line Cinema)During the casting for A Nightmare on Elm Street, director Wes Craven thought he needed a “big man.” After all, it was going to be a horror movie about an evil, dream-haunting psychopath who slaughters kids with a glove fitted with knives. In his mind, Craven was following the precedent set by Tobe Hooper in 1974 and John Carpenter in 1978 – The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween both featured hulking, unstoppable man-monsters. Craven even interviewed Kane Hodder – the man who would wear the hockey mask once Jason Voorhees took center stage in the Friday the 13th series – for the part. But a skinny, young actor named Robert Englund thought that most child abusers were weasels and creeps, not hulks. So he offered a different take on the lecherous Freddy Krueger, and not only would Nightmare take off because of it, but horror movies themselves would be changed forever.Released 35 years ago this week, A Nightmare on Elm Street took the concept of the bad guy as the marquee character – the one people not only came to see, but to actively cheer on – to whole new levels. The faceless, voiceless, mask-obscured killing machines that preceded Nightmare had to make way for a mugging, self-referential, hammy villain-hero.The Diva Who Shunned the MaskIn the end credits of Halloween, the character of Michael Myers isn’t even listed by name. He’s called “The Shape.” This is significant because Michael isn’t meant to  be  anyone. The whole point is that he just is, a silent menace in the periphery as the movie focuses on the guilt-ridden Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence) and high school good girl Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). With his slow movement, white, expressionless face, and complete silence, Michael is a terrifying blank slate.A few years later, Friday the 13th would completely obscure its main villain until the very end – revealing at last that the murders were committed by a revenge-obsessed woman scarred by the apparent death of her son, Jason, many years before. When Jason himself took the spotlight in the next few installments, he, too, was a silent, expressionless entity who at first wears a nondescript bag over his head before he even gets his signature goalie mask (in Part III).And yet, by 1986’s Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives, we saw the movie literally opening with a tongue-in-cheek James Bond parody:What happened? Freddy happened.A Nightmare on Elm Street had the same bland, suburban setting as Halloween and a similar gang of horny teens as the Friday films, but there was a key difference. Freddy wasn t just scary, he was darkly witty. He was creative. He was, well, a thousand times more interesting than anyone he killed.Sure, people went to horror movies for the killer or the monster – this had been true since the 1950s. You went to see The Blob because you wanted to see the blob. But this was different. Audiences liked Freddy. He was the star, not just the threat, and things only got hammier as the franchise went along. It was because, rather than going with yet another “big man” monster, Craven and Englund delivered a performance. Freddy was a theatrical diva.Would any other slasher work so well in a Fresh Prince video? The other competitors had no choice but to follow suit. Although somewhat hamstrung by their lack of personality, Jason and Michael still went through increasingly bizarre and laughable incarnations in an effort to keep up with Freddy. This is why we eventually got cyborg space-Jason and Busta Rhymes electrocuting Michael Myers in the crotch after he shouts, “Trick or treat, motherf er!”Post-Nightmare, movie slashers had to be more than just killers. They needed to be in the spotlight, not the shadows. One-liners, theatricality, and insane death scenarios all became requirements. We’d never have IT’s Pennywise or Scream’s Ghostface without Freddy. So to celebrate the mugging, one-liner-spewing dream-weaver on his 35th anniversary, let’s run down his greatest hits. The Five Best Freddy Kills1) A Nightmare on Elm Street: “Watch this.”Freddy’s first outing really sets the tone, and this scene has it all. Rather than simply stalking and killing Tina (Amanda Wyss), he toys with her, throwing out one-liners and a few party tricks as he leads her to an overly elaborate demise. Freddy is playing to the crowd.2) Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master: “Wanna suck face?”Freddy kills an asthmatic girl by dropping this one-liner before literally sucking the air out of her lungs and leaving her a deflated corpse.3) Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare: “Let’s trip out.”Freddy s satirical take on the “This is your brain…” PSAs from the 80s and 90s – complete with a cameo from former Freddy victim Johnny Depp – and an extended Super Mario Bros.-inspired kill is all the proof you need that he was a frustrated comedian.4) A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child: “Bon Appétit!”Dressing up as a chef and strapping a girl with an eating disorder into a high chair for the sole purpose of force-feeding her to death in front of her overbearing mother? Can you imagine Leatherface putting in this kind of multi-layered effort?5) A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors: “Welcome to prime time, b h!”A scene that begins with former talk show host Dick Cavett turning into Freddy before killing Zsa Zsa Gabor can’t possibly get any more insane, can it? Oh, yes. Freddy literally pops out of the TV and pulls Jennifer (Penelope Sudrow) face-first into the set with his mechanical TV arms. With an applause-baiting one-liner, of course.A Nightmare on Elm Street went into wide release on November 16, 1984.梦幻诛仙怎么启灵The Crown: Season 4 (2020) – Netflix About the show: As the 1970s are drawing to a close, Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) and her family find themselves preoccupied with safeguarding the line of succession by securing an appropriate bride for Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor), who is still unmarried at 30. As the nation begins to feel the impact of divisive policies introduced by Britain s first female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson), tensions arise between her and the Queen which only grow worse as Thatcher leads the country into the Falklands War, generating conflict within the Commonwealth. While Charles’ romance with a young Lady Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin) provides a much-needed fairytale to unite the British people, behind closed doors, the Royal family is becoming increasingly divided. Why You Should Watch It: The Emmy-winning series missed out on major-category awards for season 3, despite being led by Oscar-winner Colman and a Certified Fresh 90% Tomatometer score. (The title did scoop up trophies, however, for Outstanding Period Costumes and Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program – One Hour Or More.) With the addition of storylines for Thatcher and Lady Diana, season 4 offers fans even more historical drama to snack on.Premiere Date: Sunday, Nov. 15, 2020

3. 激战团竞模式
When Tom Hooper s Cats debuted in theaters back in December, critical response to the film was swift and savage (it currently sits at 20% on the Tomatometer), which wasn t a surprise to anyone paying attention to the internet chatter following the release of the film s first trailer. But once the initial hubbub died down, it seemed like audiences were content to move on. There were much more important things to worry about, after all. However, when shelter-in-place orders began to go into effect across the country during the first few weeks of March, people everywhere scrambled to find something to watch at home, and it just so happened that Cats entered the digital market on March 17. Thanks to the musings of Seth Rogen, who live-tweeted while watching the film, and another writer who received information about a potential butthole cut of the movie, Cats blew up again, and we now have a collection of officially licensed clips that help illustrate what made it so fascinating to so many people. Check out all 10 of the clips below, and let us know in the comments what you thought about the movie! The One That Doesn t Tell Us What Jellicles AreIf you re looking for any clues as to what exactly a Jellicle Cat is, your best bet would be this musical number, appropriately titled Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats. We re not saying it will necessarily clarify anything for you, as the song sets up even more questions than it answers, but it s apparently sufficient for Francesca Hayward s Victoria, who seems content to take phrases like Jellicles can and Jellicles do at face value. The Rebel Wilson Scene That s As Wild As You ve HeardIt s the clip you never you knew you needed to see until you saw it and couldn t figure out if it was a good idea that you did or not, but you re glad you got it over with anyway. Rebel Wilson s Jennyanydots, a Gumbie Cat, attempts to explain what it is she does that makes her a Gumbie Cat. In the meantime, she sashays around an oversized kitchen, unzips her fur coat to reveal another more bedazzled one underneath, and devours a few cockroaches with human faces. You know, Gumbie Cat things. The One Where Jason Derulo Does a British AccentThis is Jason Derulo s big song, which, like pretty much all of the others, serves to shed some light on who his character is. And, like pretty much all of the others, you don t learn a whole lot, except maybe that Rum Tum Tugger will do basically the opposite of what you want him to. Oh, and Derulo can pull off a somewhat halfway decent British accent. The One Where James Corden Eats TrashJames Corden spends most of his number demonstrating why his dumpster connoisseur Bustopher Jones is, as the song explains, so fat. He s also one of the few cats who wears human clothes, though he eventually sheds his tux and top hat to go prancing through the garbage, like every true gentleman does. The One That Takes Place in a Giant HouseMungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are a pair of delinquent cats who have developed a reputation for petty theft and general chaos, or so they claim. The most notable thing about this clip is arguably the production design, which takes center stage as Mungo, Rumple, and Victoria do somersaults on oversized bedroom furniture, slide down bannisters, and crawl around on a giant dinner table. It actually looks kind of fun.The One Where Ian McKellen Gets MetaIan McKellen musters all of the world-weariness he can to sing the song of Gus, an old theater cat reminiscing on his past accomplishments, and of course, he makes it easy to believe that all the other cats would sit around in awe as he tells his stories. He also gets to sing the shockingly self-aware line, The theater is certainly not what it was, and he sells it without a hint of irony. In other words, Ian McKellen is incredible no matter how furry he is, and no one else could have played Gus.The One with Tap DancingSteven McRae makes the most of his appearance here as Skimbleshanks, the Railway Cat, tap dancing his way through train cars and across the tracks. The song that accompanies him is predictably meaningless, but as a showcase for his abilities, it s pretty great. The One With Taylor Swift and Nude Idris ElbaOh, that s right. Taylor Swift is in this movie. Her British accent is decidedly less effective than Jason Derulo s, but when you ve got magical catnip and nude cat Idris Elba to distract viewers, no one is likely to notice. The One With Magic and Awkward NuzzlesThis is the first of the clips in which we actually hear Dame Judi Dench s voice, as she sings the praises of Laurie Davidson s Mr. Mistoffelees, a magician cat with a penchant for awkward neck nuzzles and nose kisses. He also shoots playing cards out of his top hat and flowers out of his sleeves. Because he s magic. The One With Jennifer Hudson s SnotCats culminates in this moment, the iconic song that has been covered and parodied countless times. Jennifer Hudson belts it out with the requisite emotion, and it s shot with an air of reverence, but the computer effects and the copious upper-lip snot are admittedly a little distracting. It s the big finale the movie deserves.Cats is available to own now on FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google, iTunes, and Vudu.

(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)Our new Classic Film Catch-Up feature connects you with classic films to put on your watchlist – beloved favorites and hidden gems alike. With more time at home, there s no better opportunity to finally watch these titles that helped define cinema as we know it.The current situation of social distancing has many of us thinking of ways to maximize the time we spend at home. We re also eating several times a day and annoying our pets, but being productive does cross our minds from time to time. Puzzles, long-abandoned books, craft projects, and New Year s resolutions have suddenly jumped to the top of our to-do lists. In the RT comments, many of you have shared how you re catching up on classic films, and here at RT, we happen to agree that now is the perfect time to increase your classic film viewing.Concentrating on films released before 1980 (both well-known titles and hidden gems), we re producing new guides to essential classic films curated by theme, filmmaker, actor, genre, or style – all for your classic catch-up needs. Want to see our picks for the best French farces? How about a curated list of Fresh picks from Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers, or Billy Wilder? As well as curating watchlists, we re breaking down the films, telling you where you can watch them, and giving you some more recent and/or well-known films the classics might remind you of so you can gauge which movies are right for you.And the movies are more accessible than ever. Turner Classic Movies may have had to cancel their annual classic film festival this year, and 2018 saw the demise of their classic film app, FilmStruck, but between the newly launched The Criterion Channel streaming app and other streaming services, movie fans still have access to thousands of old Hollywood masterworks.Read below for our list of seminal classic quirky romantic comedies you need to see or revisit. More than simple boy-meets-girl tales, these love stories go far beyond the typical meet-cute and in many cases reflect unique moments in film history.Got other quirky rom-coms you d add to our list? Have a suggestion for a future theme or classic film to feature in the column? Let us know in the comments. Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) 79% (Photo by Courtesy of Columbia Pictures)What is it? Married couple Bob (Robert Culp) and Carol (Natalie Wood) attend a life-changing workshop and swiftly adopt the practices they learned, much to the distress of their best friends Ted (Elliott Gould) and Alice (Dyan Cannon). The workshop and its aftermath profoundly change the couples marriages and their feelings for one another. Why you need to see it: Prior to the repeal of the Hays Code – the moral production code that regulated what could be shown on screen – most films could not overtly reference sex. This need to edit out the explicit content was one driver of the tongue-in-cheek sexual innuendo of 1940s and 1950s romantic comedies. After the Hays Code was officially abandoned in 1968, a new wave of sexually explicit comedies flooded cinemas. Bob Carol Ted Alice is one of the first sex comedies and one of the best. No longer did screenwriters have to dance around the subject; director and co-writer Paul Mazursky could, in fact, address the elephant in the room. Funnily enough, having your first film score four Oscar nods and make bank at the box office ruins Hollywood, according to Mazursky; the director joked later that the film was almost too perfect, and therefore its success could never be replicated.Watch it if you like: Obvious Child, Seems Like Old Times, Chances Are, Chasing AmyWhere to watch: Stream now on The Criterion Channel app, or rent or buy at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.It Happened One Night (1934) 99% What is it? An heiress on the run (Claudette Colbert) joins forces with a man she meets, but little does she know he is actually a reporter in need of a story. Why you need to see it: One of only three films to ever pull a clean sweep of the five major Oscar categories (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Actress), It Happened One Night is one of the truly great romantic comedies. The movie combines Clark Gable s undeniable charm, Claudette Colbert s comedic timing, and the feel-good filmmaking of Frank Capra. Our only question is, what has taken you so long to see it?Watch it if you like: Roman Holiday, Almost Famous, The Proposal, Annie Hall, You ve Got Mail, Nick and Norah s Infinite Playlist, Working GirlWhere to watch: Rent or buy at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Sabrina (1954) 93% What is it? Sabrina (Audrey Hepburn) is a lovestruck chauffeur s daughter who nurses an impossible crush for David (William Holden), the youngest son of the family that employs her father. When Sabrina returns home after years in Paris, the newly engaged David is suddenly ready to romance her and dump his fiancée – something that David s older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) is determined to prevent. Why you need to see it: This is a must-watch because of Bogie, Hepburn, Holden, and writer-director Billy Wilder. Audrey Hepburn was the perfect choice for the stylish Cinderella love interest and rightfully earned the Best Actress nomination she received for the film. Nominated for six Oscars and taking home the prize for Best Costumes, Sabrina is an early example of a film whose cast was fleshed out with A-list talent and Oscar winners. Bogart, who replaced Wilder s first choice of Cary Grant, was arguably one of the biggest stars on the planet, and here he was cast alongside Hepburn and Holden, both of whom had taken home Best Acting Oscars in 1953. This was the kind of dream-team casting not often replicated. Bogart was never sure he was the right choice for Linus, but his put-off posturing both on and off set served his performance well.Watch it if you like: While You Were Sleeping, Pretty Woman, Some Like it Hot, She s All That, The Princess Diaries, Roman HolidayWhere to watch: Available to stream on Crackle, or buy or rent it at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Pillow Talk (1959) 93% What is it? Marriage-minded interior decorator Jan Morrow (Doris Day) must share a phone line with her playboy neighbor, Brad Allen (Rock Hudson). When Brad sees the beauty on the other end of his line he decides to woo Jan under a false identity and inadvertently falls in love during the process. Why you need to see it: Pillow Talk was a risqué project for the squeaky clean Doris Day and Rock Hudson, but turned out to be the first of several successful films the pair made together. The clever innuendos peppered throughout the Oscar-winning script were, in fact, scandalous by 1950s film standards; it was testament to the large screenwriting team that they got past the censor board with the hilarity still intact. Compare it to Bob Carol Ted Alice, and you can acutely appreciate how much progress was made in just one decade. Watching it with a modern eye is a bit like watching classic anti-drug films like Reefer Madness.Watch it if you like: 40 days and 40 Nights, Two Weeks Notice, Never Been Kissed, 10 Things I Hate About YouWhere to watch: Streaming now for free on Hoopla Digital, or rent or boy it at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Shampoo (1975) 62% (Photo by Courtesy of Columbia Pictures)What is it? A playboy hairdresser (Warren Beatty) enlists the husband of one of his rich female lovers/clients when he seeks a loan for his salon. A series of events then ensue that places the hairdresser at a party with his girlfriend, her husband, and several ex-lovers – including the one that got away. Why you need to see it: The Owl and the Pussycat and Bob Carole Ted Alice loosened the cap off cinematic sexual oppression, but after the success of X-rated films like Deep Throat and Midnight Cowboy, the initial shock of sex had lost its luster by the 1970s. In 1975, a fresh approach was needed to wow audiences, and Warren Beatty provided it with his satirical sex comedy Shampoo – though many at the time did not appreciate it. A sex comedy where nothing happens and *spoiler alert* no one falls in love? It is easy to understand why audiences and many contemporary critics dismissed the film. The laughs are tempered by bleakness and the film ends up saddened by its characters awkwardness, wrote Time Out London. However, on a second look, you can appreciate how George s womanizing ways were a direct product of the 1960s free love movement, and the film offered a clever depiction of the 1970s hangover that much of America was suffering after all of that 60s excess. Beatty s script, which he co-wrote with Robert Towne, acutely understood the character of George and his sexual apathy.Watch it if you like: American Pie, Three s Company, Wedding Crashers, The Birdcage, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Don Jon, Trainwreck. Where to watch: Stream now on The Criterion Channel, or rent or buy at FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu. His Girl Friday (1940) 99% What is it? No-nonsense news editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant) has only a few hours to prevent his star reporter – and ex-wife – Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) from quitting the paper to marry a simple-minded insurance salesman she met on vacation. After a convicted murderer escapes from jail, Burns is thrust into a race against time to stop Hildy – and secure the exclusive story. Why you need to see it: If Capra s It Happened One Night firmly established the fast-talking screwball comedy, His Girl Friday might have perfected it. It Happened One Night is a near-perfect romantic comedy, but director Howard Hawks took over-talking and quick dialogue to new heights with His Girl Friday, establishing a style that has been replicated everywhere from the Gilmore Girls to Glengarry Glen Ross.  You don t know whether you have been laughing or having your ears boxed, wrote New York Times film critic Frank S. Nugent at the time of its release.Watch it if you like: Gilmore Girls, Obvious Child, Silver Linings Playbook, Raising Arizona, The Newsroom, MoonlightingWhere to watch: Streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Vudu, available to rent or buy from FandangoNOW, Google Play, and  iTunes.Death Is a Woman (1967) 82%(Photo by Courtesy of Criterion Collection. )What is it? An exotic dancer wants a child and her current lover is not willing – but his best friend might be tempted to fill in for him.Why you need to see it: We could go on and on about how A Woman is a Woman is a clever rebuttal to the American musical comedy. We could talk about Jean-Luc Godard and his visionary camera work and shooting style. We could talk about French New Wave or French sex comedies. But the best reason to see the film is a woman, and that woman is the incomparable Anna Karina. Just gaze into her eyes and let her performance hypnotize you.Watch it if you like: The Love Witch, Bridget Jones Diary, She s the One, Cleo from 5 to 7, Easy AWhere to watch: Now streaming on the Starz app, or rent or buy from Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Barefoot in the Park (1967) 85%What is it? A conservative attorney (Robert Redford) rushes into marriage with a carefree woman (Jane Fonda). Realizing they are very different people, the young couple struggle to stay in love and avoid divorce. Why you need to see it: It would be criminal not include a Neil Simon film on any list of great classic romantic comedies. Writer of The Goodbye Girl, The Heartbreak Kid, and Seems Like Old Times, Simon was a master of opposites-attract love stories. Jane Fonda plays the free-spirited Corie to seductive perfection, and Robert Redford manages to stifle all his natural charms to embody the stuffed shirt, Paul. It s a love story where the question is never, Will these two fall in love?  The only question in Barefoot in Park is, Can they stay together? The film was not universally loved upon release, but we tend to agree with Time Magazine, which wrote at the time: Simon has taken a plot as bland as a potato, sliced it into thin bits – and made it as hard to resist as potato chips. Watch it if you like: Dharma Greg, My Fair Lady, Shakespeare in Love, Pretty Woman, Moonstruck, The Way We WereWhere to watch: Now streaming on the Starz app, or rent or purchase on Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu.Looking for more movies and shows to watch? 梦幻诛仙怎么启灵 If you ever thought a hybrid of The Big Sick and Michael Mann s Collateral sounded like a terrific idea, this week s Stuber might be the ride for you. Like The Big Sick, Stuber stars Kumail Nanjiani as a mild-mannered Uber driver named Stu, of course who is roped into a frequently violent wild goose chase across Los Angeles in search of a murderous drug dealer. The large, imposing man responsible for said roping is LAPD detective Vic Manning (played by Dave Bautista), who requires Stu s services because he s recovering from a Lasik operation. Will the two of them learn to put aside their differences and work together in harmony? Will they help each other confront some hard truths about themselves? Will cars be chased and heads be busted? The answer to all of those questions is likely to be yes, and critics say it s a little disappointing that Stuber doesn t do more with its talented cast, which also includes Karen Gillan, Mira Sorvino, and Betty Gilpin. There s also quite a bit of violence and a some tonal inconsistencies, but if you don t mind that, there may some fun to be had here.

(Photo by © A24)2019 has been such a strong year for wide-release horror films that the upcoming Black Christmas remake could receive a 0% Tomatometer score and the average for the 23 horror films released in 2019 would still be a Fresh 60%. This may not seem all that important, but this is big news for horror fans. Why? Because in the modern era of horror (which we’ll define as from 1980 forward), there hasn’t been a year with a Fresh overall Tomatometer score. This Fresh average shouldn’t come as a surprise to those paying attention to the genre this year – Certified Fresh hits like Us, Crawl, Ready or Not, and Midsommar have won over critics and audiences alike. Even remakes/adaptations are over-performing critically as Child’s Play (63%) and Pet Sematary (57%) are Fresh and very close to it, respectively, when historically horror remakes average a Rotten 44% Tomatometer average. In honor of this Fresh year of theatrically released horror, we pulled the Tomatometer data on the 644 horror movies that received wide releases (defined here as 600+ theaters) in the United States since 1980. We wanted to know how the preceding 40 years of horror films matched up against 2019, and if any year had a higher Tomatometer average.Quick Note: We chose 1980-2019 because there is greater consistency in Tomatometer data than in earlier years. The 1970s were the bomb though.THE OVERALL AVERAGE FOR HORROR FILMS RELEASED SINCE 1980 IS A ROTTEN 43.8%(Photo by Lions Gate / Everett Collection )The overall Tomatometer average for the 644 horror movies that received wide theatrical releases since 1980 is a Rotten 43.8%, and 438 of those movies (or 68%) have scores below 60%. The Rotten far outweigh the Fresh, and for every Green Room, The Descent, The Thing, and Scream 2 , there are movies like Jaws: The Revenge, House of the Dead, I, Frankenstein, Godsend, The Roommate, and Dream House bringing down their average.Another interesting fact (for data nerds and horror movie lovers who are also data nerds) is that since 1990, only five years have had more Fresh horror films than Rotten: 1982 (7 4), 1983 (8 7), 1987 (10 7), 2013 (7 6), and 2019 (12 10). This data makes 2019’s Fresh score even more impressive. On a side note, the years 1997-1999 have a seriously high number of Rotten horror movies that we at RT actually love. Between Anaconda, Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, The Faculty, Idle Hands, Blade, Deep Rising, The Relic, The Mummy, Lake Placid, and the king of all Rotten horror movies, Event Horizon (you can read more about Event Horizon as well as Blade in our book Rotten Movies We Love), the years are stacked with Rotten movies that are pretty awesome.THE BEST DECADE FOR HORROR IS THE 1980s. No Surprise there. (Photo by New Line Cinema)Despite having no single year with a Fresh Tomatometer score, the 1980s have the highest overall average with a groovy 52.5%. Buoyed by A Nightmare on Elm Street, Near Dark, The Fly, The Thing, and Fright Night, the 1980s slaughtered the 1990s (43.6%), 2000s (32.2%), and the 2010s (47.1%).Six of the top 10 years in our data set come from the 1980s, and 1987 came close to being Fresh, but the 0%-rated Jaws: The Revenge and the 9% House 2 kept it at a Rotten 57%. A big reason for the 1980s being the highest-rated decade is that it has only one year in the bottom 10 Rottenest years on the list (1989, with a Tomatometer average of 34.4%).2006 HAS THE LOWEST TOMATOMETER AVERAGE, AND THE MOST ROTTEN DECADE IS THE 2000s(Photo by © Warner Bros. )The worst year in our entire data set is 2006, which currently has a Rotten 31.1% average. The distinction is dubious, but at least 2006 kept it interesting with movies like Pan’s Labyrinth, The Descent, Slither, Hostel, Snakes on a Plane, The Hill Have Eyes, and The Wicker Man remake, an amazingly bonkers movie that features Nicolas Cage running all over the place while wearing a bear suit. Also, the first Black Christmas remake was released in 2006, and with a 14% Tomatometer score, the less said, the better. The 2000s as a whole weren’t much better, as the decade averaged a 32% Tomatometer score. Four of the five lowest Tomatometer years in the data set are from the 2000s, and only 33 of the 189 theatrically released movies in that decade have a Fresh Tomatometer score. The numbers may look bad, but on a positive note, the 2000s are responsible for bona fide classics like Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later, The Mist, and Zombieland. Plus, movies like Jennifer’s Body, 28 Weeks Later, 30 Days of Night, Constantine, Frailty, Eight Legged Freaks, and The Happening (it’s awesome, get over yourself), are starting to gain their due popularity.Random Tomatometer Fact: Imogen Poots, the star of the upcoming Black Christmas remake, made her horror debut in 2007, appearing in the Fresh 28 Weeks Later (the opening scene is awesome). Since then, she’s crushed it the underrated Fright Night remake and in Green Room, which is one of the best-reviewed horror films of recent memory.2019 HAS THE HIGHEST TOMATOMETER AVERAGE FOR HORROR MOVIES OF ANY YEAR SINCE 1980, AND IS THE ONLY FRESH YEAR,WITH A 63% AVERAGEWhat makes 2019 the only Fresh year in our data set might surprise you. While movies like Us, Doctor Sleep, The Lighthouse, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark helped greatly, it’s the remakes, prequels, sequels, and adaptations that greatly contributed to the overall Freshness. 2019 has been a lot of fun because of movies like Annabelle Comes Home, a sequel to a prequel (Annabelle: Creation) of a prequel (Annabelle), which has a Fresh 64% Tomatometer score. Normally, a horror movie so far removed from the original is almost always Rotten. Toss in the Certified Fresh Crawl (82%), a movie about rampaging alligators, and 3 From Hell, Rob Zombie s 50%-rated sequel to The Devil’s Rejects, and you have movies that are over-performing critically when compared the likes of Lake Placid (46%), Primeval (18%), 31 (47%), and Lords of Salem (46%) from past years. The 25% Tomatometer-rated Countdown, a movie about a ‘killer’ phone app, has the lowest score of any wide-release horror movie in 2019. Typically, a 25% score isn’t reason to celebrate – but when compared to the Rottenest horror movie of each year in our data set, it’s the least Rotten (the closest is 1984’s 23%-rated C.H.U.D.). In fact, the 10 Rotten horror movies released in 2019 have a 46.3% average, which is the highest average for the Rotten films of all the years in our data set. 2019 has the best of the worst, and that’s why it’s Fresh. What is your favorite year for horror?
