(Photo by Marvel Studios)The alien shapeshifting race known as the Skrulls have been part of the Marvel Comics universe for a very long time. Their first appearance was in 1962 s The Fantastic Four #2, which saw the alien race copy the team’s likenesses and powers in an attempt to discredit the heroes, paving the way for a full-scale invasion. They would appear again 16 issues later and continue to develop across hundred of appearances over the next 50+ years. But over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, their first appearance is set for next week s Captain Marvel. Previously, the character concept was believed to be part of the 20th Century Fox library of intellectual property alongside the Fantastic Four, but the situation has changed, and the arrival of the storied alien race could mean big things for the MCU. And looking at their history within the pages of Marvel Comics, we have a few guesses as to what their appearance could mean in Marvel Studios output in the years to come.Celestial Origins(Photo by Marvel Studios)As Marvel’s own cosmology began to solidify, the reptilian Skrulls became connected to the Celestials, an impossibly powerful primordial race that is the seeming source of most Marvel superpowers, thanks to their manipulation of genetics across the universe. If you’ve ever watched Ancient Aliens, they are similar to the Sky Peoples the “experts” on that program claim altered human evolution, except the Celestials have more thrilling headgear. (In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Kurt Russell s Ego claimed to be a Celestial, signaling the first appearance of the race in the MCU.) The initial Skrull peoples were split into three distinct groups: Prime, Deviant, and Eternal (Keep the latter two terms in mind as they will matter later). The Deviants hunted the other two groups into virtual extinction. The last surviving Eternal married into the Deviant royal line while the last remaining Prime Skrull fled to Earth and, surprisingly, leaves our tale. After the Deviants won the war for supremacy and became the only Skrull race remaining, they set aside their warring ways, using their shapeshifting powers to infiltrate and assimilate annexed planets and cultures. Cooperation was the order of the day until the Skrulls met the Kree. The Kree-Skrull War(Photo by Marvel Studios)As part of an initial diplomatic mission to the Kree homeworld of Hala, the Skrulls set up a delegation of Kree and Cotati, the planet s other advanced species, on separate worlds to determine which of the two would represent Hala in the Skrull Empire. The Kree killed the Cotati when it became clear the latter species would be chosen. Stunned by their behavior, the Skrull ambassadors banned the Kree from trade with the empire, which prompted the Kree to simply kill the ambassadors and appropriate their technology. Eventually attacking the Skrull homeworld of Skrullos with ships reverse-engineered from that initial encounter, the Kree engaged the Skrulls in a protracted war across millennia that saw the latter reorganize into a militaristic society. This war would continue into the 20th Century (or the relative present, as Marvel’s timeline scales between the 1960s and the present day in strange ways), during which time the Avengers would become part of the conflict. After Earthling superheroes got involved, there was relative peace marred by occasional skirmishes. But any semblance of a ceasefire ended when planet-eater Galactus (who we expect to enter the MCU soon) devoured the Skrull throneworld and its central leadership. Scattered factions turned on each other before resuming their war with the Kree.Secret Invasion(Photo by Marvel Studios)Earth, as it turns out, is in a prime strategic spot for both the Kree and the Skrulls. And thanks to Celestial intervention in its past – which the Kree would later mimic by developing the Inhumans on Earth – it was full of superpowered people ready to defend it from any open invasion. The Skrulls had an advantage thanks to their shapeshifting abilities, infiltrating the planet on a number of occasions, like the aforementioned Fantastic Four #2. Defeat often came at the hands of Skrull defectors who came to enjoy the human way of life. After the Galactus incident and a few other shocks to their sense of superiority, a waning Skrull Empire went for broke, kidnapping prominent superheroes as a prelude to an all-out invasion of the planet. In Secret Invasion by Brian Micheal Bendis and Leinil Yu, their plan comes to fruition as Skrull agents destabilized the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, S.H.I.E.L.D., and the planetary defense force known as S.W.O.R.D. They also attacked Tony Stark directly, disabling him and the various Stark technologies used around the globe. But as nothing ever goes right for the Skrulls, the heroes they kidnapped made their way back home and help the remaining heroes on Earth defeat the Skrulls after a lot of fighting in and around Manhattan. The resulting fallout saw Tony discredited and Norman Osborn given a leading position in the S.H.I.E.L.D./Avengers defense apparatus. But seeing as Osborn one of Spider-Man s most well-known adversaries has not shown up in the MCU yet, that is a story for another day.Skrulls In The MCU(Photo by Marvel Studios)Thanks to the complicated rights situation between Marvel and Fox, the Skrulls are something of a late addition to universal politics. As the MCU developed without them, the Kree debuted in both Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Guardians of the Galaxy in an independent fashion. In Guardians, their ancient animosity with the Skrulls appeared to transfer to the Nova Corps of Xandar, but from what we have seen of Captain Marvel, a Kree-Skrull war definitely occurred in the 1990s, the time period in which the film is set. Thanks to some pre-release featurettes, we know the Skrulls are the Kree’s deadliest and most ancient enemy. Their war has been ongoing for generations, and the Starforce is an elite group dedicated to preventing Skrull aggression in Kree space. We also know the Skrulls are infiltrating Earth, with squad leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) making his way into part of the planet s power structure. When Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) first arrives on Earth, a sense of paranoia grabs her as she cannot detect Skrull from human. That paranoia may become a bigger problem for the MCU in the years to come.Who Is Secretly A Skrull?(Photo by Marvel Studios)While it appears Captain Marvel’s main job is to introduce Carol ahead of her appearance in Avengers: Endgame, it also seems to be setting up a number of details for the cinematic universe’s fourth phase and firming up some ideas already introduced in previous Marvel Studios films. In terms of the latter, it will presumably explain why we have not seen Skrulls in the present day MCU and why they are not a continuing threat to the Kree Empire in Guardians of the Galaxy.Of course, it s always possible we have seen Skrulls without knowing it. Thanks to their shapeshifting and power-mimicking abilities, they could be hiding in plain sight. Going back to Secret Invasion, a whopping number of characters turned out to be Skrulls. Spider-Woman, for example, turned out to be the Skrull Empress, which shocked fans of the character, as she had been on a year-long journey of self-discovery that was undone by the event series. Tony Stark’s butler Jarvis – who is a conventional human man in the comics – also turned out to be a Skrull who kidnapped the real Jarvis and replaced him for at least two years prior to the invasion. As the miniseries pointed out, the Skrulls need to keep the people they are replacing alive to make the duplication viable. Thanks to a direct connection with their captives, Skrulls can possess their memories and can even act as sleeper agents unaware of their Skrull nature.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Because of this, we suspect at least a few of MCU characters who survive Endgame will turn out to be Skrulls.  Back in the comic book, Hank Pym turned out to be an active Skrull agent, while dupes of Iron Man, Spider-Man, Invisible Woman, and many more were unleashed during the open invasion to confuse the heroes. Considering the Skrull-Hank’s importance to the scheme, it would not surprise us if the MCU’s version of the character (played by Michael Douglas in Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp) was replaced between films. It is even possible he was replaced before the first Ant-Man film, with the sleeper agent as dedicated to retrieving Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) as the real Hank. This makes an infiltration scheme – should it survive the plot of Captain Marvel – all the more insidious. People who disappear for long stretches like Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) seem like prime candidates for duplication. Curiously, none of those three were replaced in Secret Invasion, but they would certainly seem suspect in a post-Endgame world in which the Avengers begin to wonder who is friend or foe. Then again, the same could be said about nearly every member of Team Cap, since they went off the grid after Captain America: Civil War. But also consider Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision’s (Paul Bettany) weekends away from the Avengers complex. That is plenty of time to replace either or both. Of course, we’re going to assume Vision was never replaced, as the Skrull ability cannot presumably replicate the powers of the Mind Stone. Plus, he s, well, you know. And should Robert Downey Jr. decide to stick around for another few films after Endgame, learning he may have been a Skrull replacement would certainly give him some new drama to chew on and quip at.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Then there are supporting characters like Luis (Micheal Pena), Shuri (Letitia Wright), General Ross (William Hurt), Jim Rhodes (Don Cheadle), and even Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) to consider. In Secret Invasion, the replacement of Jarvis was actually key to toppling the Avengers, so replacing close friends and relatives could prove equally effective in an MCU version of the story. This all presumes, of course, that the debut of the Skrulls is leading to a phase-long meta-narrative based on that comic book storyline. It is also possible that the Skrulls, with their connection to the Celestials, may come into play within the confines of Chloé Zhao’s upcoming Eternals film. Both early humans and Skrulls and primitive Kree for that matter were altered by the Celestials to create separate breeds of Eternals and Deviants. While the Skrull Eternals and Deviants ultimately became one Skrull race, the human Eternals and Deviants continue a secret war away from Earth. Perhaps one side or the other will reach out to their Skrull cousins for aid.But then, all of this assumes the Skrulls were not completely wiped out in the 1990s, which is still a possibility until Captain Marvel settles the matter. We re presuming they will stick around for a while in some form or another after all the dust settles.Do you think the Skrulls have already invaded the MCU? Who do you think might possibly be one? Let us know in the comments.梦幻西游服战时间Ready for another great Marvel movie? Of course, you are! The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t had a Rotten entry in all its 13 years and 24 feature films, and the latest looks to continue the franchise’s tradition. From the Hollywood premiere of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a handful of critics shared unanimous praise on social media for the story, action, performances, and more. Even some of the usually harsher reviewers were pleasantly surprised. Here’s what critics are saying about Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings:Has Marvel done it again?Shang-Chi is fantastic… Marvel has another hit on its hands.  Kirsten Acuna, InsiderShang-Chi is awesome… Bravo!  Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comShang-Chi is an absolute triumph… Astounding.  Drew Taylor, ColliderPHENOMENAL. Get hyped.  Wendy Lee Szany, The Movie CoupleHow does it compare to other movies in the MCU?Shang-Chi is one of the best MCU films ever!!!! John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorShang-Chi is like no Marvel movie you’ve seen. Steve Weintraub, ColliderI liked Shang-Chi more than Black Widow. I said it. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderThis movie hits all that Marvel does well (pacing, humor, character) and adds action like we’ve never seen from the MCU before! Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comIn many ways it feels like the least MCU movie of the MCU, and I think a lot of people will really love that. It’s a great standalone adventure/origin story. Peter Sciretta, Slashfilm(Photo by Jasin Boland/©Marvel Studios)Does it give us further hope for the franchise? It is exactly the shot in the arm that Marvel and Disney needed. Scott Mendelson, ForbesThis is the MCU back doing its thing on a high level again. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentDirector Destin Daniel Cretton brought something so fresh to the MCU. So much style and heart. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comLove that it opens the door to a new world that I can’t wait to see more of. Steve Weintraub, ColliderI’m excited to see how Shang-Chi fits into the future of this cinematic universe. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmPhase 4 is magical and mystical and I m here for it. If Shang-Chi is the direction the next phase of the MCU is heading, bring on Eternals and Doctor Strange 2. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderSo Shang-Chi is even better than it looks?Never expected it to be THIS good… Can’t believe how much I loved this movie. John Campea, The John Campea ShowDidn’t expect to love it as much as I did! Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorWe are all pleasantly surprised. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentEven I really liked it… I was so damn relieved. Scott Mendelson, Forbes(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)What if the trailer didn t wow us?Shang-Chi is a blast! Marvel delivers a wuxia/fantasy/superhero movie mash-up that’s a lot more fun than how the trailers have been selling it. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentI thought the trailers looked awful. This film delivers the goods. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentIt s much better than the trailers (lots of goodies unspoiled) and is unafraid to be weird and fantastical. Scott Mendelson, ForbesWished the trailers didn t give away two surprises in the film… but there s so much in the film that isn t in the Shang-Chi trailers that surprised me. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderHow is the action? Some of the very best action in the MCU. Drew Taylor, ColliderShang-Chi has some of the best fight scenes of any MCU movie, sometimes thrilling, other times just stunningly beautiful. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmThe action set pieces are STUNNERS. Choreography, cinematography, costume design, VFX all on point and come together to make those fights MCU standouts. Perri Nemiroff, ColliderThe action is just absurdly epic. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comThe action scenes are simply spectacular, especially the train and skyscraper scene. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentThe filmmakers know how to capture the fight choreography with long takes and quick action. (No shaky cam!). John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorEvery fight scene/action sequence is better than the last. Wendy Lee Szany, The Movie Couple(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Will hardcore martial arts fans be impressed? The fighting is another level. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorBest martial arts I’ve seen in a long time. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentIt s full of INCREDIBLE, beautifully choreographed fight scenes and full of badass women. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderFight scenes are excellent and easy to follow. Steve Weintraub, ColliderAlmost as good [as The Raid] but can t beat an R rated film that has a hardcore stunt crew. With that said, this blows [away] any fight scenes in any MCU movie. John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorHow is the story?Unexpectedly spiritual and emotionally complex. Drew Taylor, ColliderCome for the killer fight scenes, dark mysticism, and martial arts mayhem, but stay for the thoughtful rumination on family, grief, and legacy. Dan Casey, NerdistThe family story is touching. John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorExpected a simple father/son conflict narrative and it s so much bigger than that. Shang-Chi is a beautiful story about family, loss, and how our grief can blind and destroy us. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderShang-Chi is such a personal, family story at its core. That’s when it’s at its best. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comShang-Chi is part Shakespearean family tragedy, part mythological epic, part martial arts masterpiece. It is f***ing awesome. John Campea, The John Campea ShowRyan FujitaniHow is Simu Liu in the lead?Simu Liu fully embraces the marvel superhero role. Wendy Lee Szany, The Movie CoupleSimu Liu literally kicks so much ass and he is perfectly cast. Steve Weintraub, ColliderSimu Liu is a legend. He nails the action sequences, brings the heart. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comGet ready to know Simu Liu s name if you don t already. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderDoes he make a great team with Awkwafina?Simu Liu and Awkwafina are a fantastic pairing. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmSimu Liu and Awkwafina are a great duo on the screen. John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorSimu Liu and Awkwafina are terrific. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentSimu Liu has great timing with Awkwafina. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comShang and Katy are instant MCU all stars. Aaron Couch, Hollywood ReporterWhat a hugely charming duo I absolutely must see more of. Perri Nemiroff, ColliderAre there any other standouts in the cast?Tony Leung rules, of course. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentTony Leung is perfect as The Mandarin. John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorThe whole cast is terrific! Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh are international treasures. Dan Casey, NerdistRyan FujitaniDoes Shang-Chi honor Asian representation and culture? To see so many Asian actors in an MCU movie made me feel so proud and happy. #RepresentationMatters. Wendy Lee Szany, The Movie CoupleThe movie’s myriad influences (everything from Jackie Chan to Hayao Miyazaki) pay off big time. Drew Taylor, ColliderAre there any problems? All I can say negative about the movie as a whole is that the second half isn’t as good as the first half but it’s still solid. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentThe third act is full of surprises but sometimes is a little crazier than is needed. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comShould we stick around for any post-credits scenes? The post credits are funny and exciting and sets up the future of the MCU. John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorThe first after-the-credits scene is a great one. Steve Weintraub, ColliderThe Shang-Chi crowd was the most enthusiastic I have been with since Endgame. Couldn’t hear some of the post credit scene dialogue due to cheering. Aaron Couch, Hollywood Reporter(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Will we want to see it again?I can’t wait to see this film again. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorCan’t wait to watch again! Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comCan t stop thinking about how much I already want to watch Shang-Chi again. 9.96.2 8月喜迎Watch: Director Sam Raimi and stunt coordinator Jeff Habberstad on the making of Spider-Man above.In 2019, Rotten Tomatoes turns 21, and to mark the occasion we’re celebrating the 21 Most Memorable Moments from the movies over the last 21 years. In this special video series, we speak to the actors and filmmakers who made those moments happen, revealing behind-the-scenes details of how they came to be and diving deep into why they’ve stuck with us for so long. Once we’ve announced all 21, it will be up to you, the fans, to vote for which is the most memorable moment of all. In this episode of our ‘21 Most Memorable Moments’ series, director Sam Raimi and stunt coordinator reveal how a cold night in the fake rain on the backlot helped shift the course for the superhero movies forever.VOTE FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR 21 MOST MEMORABLE MOVIE MOMENTS POLLThe Movie: Spider-Man (2002) 90%It’s unthinkable today, but making a Spider-Man movie in 2002 was a risk. Hollywood had gone cold on the superhero movie following the diminishing returns of the Batman movies, turning its attention to fantasy epics and series instead. Making a superhero movie with a somewhat scrawny, emotionally vulnerable kid at its center? With large portions playing out like a high-school comedy? Directed by the guy who made The Evil Dead? That was almost unthinkable. But Sony’s risk would pay off, with director Sam Raimi’s take on the Peter Parker character and the comic-book movie changing the next two decades of cinema that would follow. Here Raimi recalls how he had to fight passionately to get the job and execute his vision, while stunt coordinator Jeff Habberstad reveals how he helped bring that vision to life.Sam Raimi on set with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. (Photo by ©Columbia Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)“My agent said, ‘OK, you re on the list. You re number 17.’” Sam Raimi: “I had always been a giant fan of Stan Lee s great comic books, Spider-Man chief among them, and I heard that Sony Pictures was going to make a movie of Spider-Man. So, I told my agent at the time I d really like to get a meeting to be considered for the film, and he told me at the time that Sony Pictures wasn t that interested in me as the director. I said, ‘Well, can they at least put me on the list somewhere down the line?’ And he called me back and said, OK, you re on the list. You re number 17.’ I said, ‘What does that mean?’ He said, ‘It means there s 16 directors they d rather meet with before you.’ And I said, ‘Great.’ So, the months went on and I didn t hear any response, and I called the agent. I said, ‘How s it going?’ And he called me back and said, ‘Well, you re number seven.’ I finally worked my way into an actual meeting with them, and they said, ‘Tell us about the movie you wanna make.’ All I did was I told them about my great love for Stan Lee s comic book, Spider-Man, and what it was to me. And for me, it was a great love story with a real human being at center, Peter Parker. Somebody I could really identify with. Somebody who had to do homework. Someone who the girls weren t crazy about. Somebody who was bullied. And, somebody who came from a broken home. And yet, he had to rise up in his off-hours and become this hero to protect the city, and I thought that was so moving. It seemed like they had never heard that version before, which is everything that Stan Lee did in his comics. And they called me up sometime later and said I had the job.”“It just came to everybody s mind in Hollywood that a superhero should be a strong, tall, leading man… like how the great Christopher Reeves played Superman.”Raimi: “Tobey was my first, and really, my only choice for the role. He s very sensitive as a human being, and he s a great actor, and so he understands the inner pain that Peter Parker feels, but knows to keep it hidden, and not to wear his heart on his sleeve. But at the time, Sony Pictures, headed up by Amy Pascal, didn t see why he was the right choice for the role. I think the humanistic superhero hadn t yet really hit the screens yet… It just came to everybody s mind in Hollywood that a superhero should be strong, tall, leading man, have a lot of power or gravitas he should be like how George Clooney played Batman or how the great Christopher Reeves played Superman. I was successful when I finally was able to communicate to Amy over the course of months of writing, working on the scripts with the writers, and doing pre-production, that we re really making the story of a boy who learns responsibility. And I think when she finally understood the character that Stan Lee had created, she realized that Tobey was the right choice, and finally relented and allowed me to cast him. It s very rare for me to have worked with a studio that actually listened [which Sony did], that actually understands that the director has a vision for a project and listens and knows to support that vision. It was a very new experience for me. Especially when it s contrary to their vision.”Raimi fought to cast Maguire as Spider-Man. (Photo by ©Columbia Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)“We need to put more weight in the landing. We need to really show that the web is taking on the stretch.”Raimi: “I had great graphic images all through my childhood years of how Spider-Man lands, what his pose looks like, how he swings from a web. I d seen all these great artists artistic renderings. The job was not really difficult to come up with a vision, because it existed. It was to bring that vision to the big screen. How would we do that? How would we get actors to move in a way through space that only a comic book artist could depict? It really wasn t realistic. It was fantasy. How could we bring that to life and make it real for the audience? It happens on a painstakingly slow frame-by-frame basis. So, that went on from the first day of drawing storyboard number one with my artists, to the last day of approving a CGI final. And it was all about, ‘He doesn t look real here. We need to put more weight in the landing. We need to really show that the web is taking on the stretch. It doesn t feel like it s affected by his swinging.’ It was all about the details of trying to make it seem like it could really happen, and if we could do that, we didn t even have to count on the spectacle being as high of a bar. Simply making it believable for the audience at the time would ve wowed them. That was my thinking, and so that s what we went for.”“He lands in a real comfortable-looking position for him, but for you and me, there s no way we could get into that position.”Jeff Habberstad: We had several different stunt doubles for Spider-Man. We had two primary ones, Mark Wagner and Chris Daniels. Wagner came from Cirque du Soleil and Chris came from a dancing background, and they were both extremely good acrobats and also extremely flexible. And the flexibility, when you see how Spider-Man looks just when he lands in the bottom of the boxing ring or on the side of a building, he stretches and lands in a real comfortable-looking position for him, but for you and me, there s no way we could get into that position. That s kind of what I saw in the comic books – you see him all curled up like a spider in this beautiful pose that you can t achieve. We definitely tried to achieve that as much as we possibly could.”Habberstad worked with two stuntmen to make the movement seem real and graceful. Gates and engage in more historical nonsense. Let’s hope Disney forks over another 0 million so he can finish the trilogy, whether that happens in theaters or on Disney+.4. SEAN BEAN LIVES! (Photo by (c) Touchstone courtesy Everett Collection)We’ve been programmed to accept that Sean Bean always dies in a spectacular fashion (e.g., Goldeneye ouch), and when his Ian Howe doesn’t fall prey to a Templar trap or an ancient catapult in National Treasure, it’s beautifully unexpected. While it would have been appropriate for Gates to let loose a one-liner  something like “I’ll treasure this moment” or “Prepare to meet your forefathers” as he sent Howe to an elaborate death, it doesn’t happen. In the end, Howe is simply arrested, which leaves him on the chessboard for future installments. After watching Bean die in (spoilers ahead!) Game of Thrones, Black Death, Equilibrium, Don’t Say a Word, The Island, Patriot Games, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, just to name a few, it’s nice to know one of his fictional characters is still alive. Early scenes between Ben and Ian show us that the two genuinely like each other, and Ian isn’t happy about his sudden heel turn. As the film progresses, Ian turns out to be a suitable antagonist who is always one step behind, but never far. Plus, the more you watch the the movie, the more you begin to like Howe s henchmen, namely Phil, Shaw, Powell, and Shippen, if only because they seem friendly with Ben, and they aren’t completely terrible at being henchmen.5. IT HELPED FILL THE INDIANA JONES VOID(Photo by (c) Touchstone courtesy Everett Collection)Smack dab in between The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and four years before Indiana Jones helped coin the term “nuking the fridge” in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, National Treasure filled a much needed void. The constant travel, puzzle solving, justified thievery, and ancient treasures satiated our thirst for globetrotting adventure; from grounded ships in the Arctic to the reflecting pool in Washington D.C., the frantic pace and constant clues made the most of a proven crowd-pleasing formula.Throw in the fact that Benjamin Franklin Gates, Patrick Gates, and John Adams Gates (Christopher Plummer) are named after American forefathers, and you have a movie that embraces history and isn’t subtle about it. Plus, the 0 million budget, the use of actual landmark locations, and the wonderful production design by Norris Spencer ensured the film would age surprisingly well over time. These types of films don’t really exist anymore, and that’s one of the reasons why we still love it now. Also, we think Indy himself would approve of the way Gates and his crew made sure the treasure was shared with the world, because “it belongs in a museum!”National Treasure was released on November 19, 2004.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Quentin Tarantino s ninth film (if you count the Kill Bill movies as one), just earned him his highest opening-weekend box office, so it s safe to say mainstream audiences were primed and ready for another of the maverick director s stylized adventures. Currently sitting Certified Fresh at 84% on the Tomatometer, the rambling tour through the Los Angeles of 1969 ranks just below Django Unchained in Tarantino s filmography, marking only the latest critical hit in a career full of them. But what did average moviegoers think of the movie? Once Upon a Time currently holds an Audience Score of 72%, which ties 2007 s Death Proof as the lowest of any of his films. Is 72% a bad score? Not by any means, but considering Tarantino s reputation as a filmmaker, it indicates a certain level of dissatisfaction not commonly associated with his movies. With that in mind, we decided to take a peek at the user reviews to get a broader sense of how the moviegoing public at large responded to the film and suss out what might have brought that Audience Score down just a touch more than we expected. Check out the user reviews of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and let us know what you thought of the film, and these reviews, in the comments. (Note, some of the reviews have been slightly edited for length and grammar/spelling.)(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)How does this compare to Tarantino s previous work? Not Tarantino s best. Sean W C, 2.5 starsThis is for the hardcore Tarantino fan. Good, but not mind-blowing.. Sean B, 3 starsIt was just OK. The most un-Tarantino movie he s made. Stephen M, 3 starsTarantino never ceases to make a masterpiece time and time again. The cinematics were pleasing, classic, and very on brand  If you are a fan of good visuals, excellent acting, and a compelling storyline with Tarantino s classic touches as the cherry on top, then this is the movie to see.– Zada, 5 StarsWhat a wild ride. The first two hours are definitely a different take from Tarantino, very different from his usual stuff. But the last 40-or-so minutes are unmistakably Tarantino in full. Kyle, 5 starsI really enjoyed the movie. It was a bit different from Quentin’s other movies, but nonetheless the cast pulled it off. The movie kept me wondering, and then I really got to see what the tale was, and was immediately hooked and impressed. It’s safe to say Tarantino hasn’t lost his touch. I would like to watch it again. Jay A, 5 stars(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)How is the pacing and plot?Terrible movie no plot, no entertainment value, just three hours of pointless dialogue. Wow, I don’t know how people enjoy this crap. Literally nothing happened until the last 20 minutes! Nothing! Do not see this movie!!! Matthew K, 0.5 starsNot his best work. Meandering and pointless. Very disappointing. David S,  2 starsThere really is not any character development or a main driving plot in the film. I would closely relate it to Pulp Fiction, in that it’s more of a series of random but loosely collected clips. A lot of people left the theater asking, “What was the point of this ?” I think the film would be more enjoyable at home when there is time to burn; there’s just too much dead time that could’ve been removed and made this movie ~1.5 hours shorter.  Daves_Ratings,  2 starsA little long. Could have cut out about 1/3 of the movie. Stephen M, 3 starsThis movie, to me, is a triumph. Although devoid of a clear plot/narrative, Tarantino crafts the dialogue and characters in ways which make it fun to watch. And although the second act tends to drag at times, the overall story is a blast to watch, along with incredibly written characters acted perfectly (especially DiCaprio and Pitt). Also, the incredibly entertaining first two hours and 15 minutes lead into what may be my favorite scene in a movie this year. David A, 4.5 starsI love Tarantino s attention to detail, nuance and creativity. The camera tells a story in every scene. If you like fast food more than well-marinated, slow-cooked steak, then this might not appeal to you. CO Critic, 5 stars(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)What about the cast? The stars carried it. Steven B, 2.5 starsI enjoyed the movie, but it wasn t one of Tarantino s best. Great acting. Great camera work. Great sound track. But it didn t have the energy of Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill 1 and 2. Maybe I just expected too much. Gene, 3 starsMovie was enjoyable fun and Leo and Brad were electric together. Gina, 3.5 starsDamn fine filmmaking! I want a Rick Dalton movie, stat! Damien C, 4.5 starsA wonderful, meandering road with superb acting performances by both DiCaprio and Pitt that eventually leads us to one hell of an ending. If you re a Tarantino fan, or a fan of any of these actors, you should love this movie. Mike M, 5 starsDiCaprio Delivers yet Again. One of the best ensemble pieces in years. Brad Pitt was phenomenal and nuanced. Will see again. Siskel No Ebert, 5 stars(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)And the historical context?Do some research before watching. A big overarching plot point in the film (which I didn’t know going in) is centered on a famous cult murder from the 1960-70 period. Daves_Ratings, 2 starsA good story, but it lacks most of the thrill and suspense often found in his films. The difference with this one is that it explores Hollywood as a past and present establishment more than creating specific stories with protagonists who set out to achieve clearly defined goals. Mark, 3.5 starsLoved the 60s eye candy from small, well-curated objects like Aqua Net hairspray and the ode to 60s neon signs  All in all, a wonderful stroll down memory lane (my era) by a director who has a unique personal style. Amy, 3.5 starsRecreation of the era and the story, cast, and characters will make you want to see this one again. Thomas, 5 stars(Photo by @ Columbia Pictures)What about that ending? The last 15 minutes were good. Too drawn out. Barry M, 2 starsI found the movie boring. The end was way too violent and weird. Very weird. Some people walked out early, and some people applauded the ending. It’s just a matter of personal taste, I guess. Donna W, 2.5 starsThe ending was a little disappointing and actually had some humor in it. Gina, 3.5 starsI don t want to spoil anything, but I was not expecting the ending at all. Zada, 5 stars(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)Any final thoughts?I feel misled about this movie; it s Helter Skelter revisited. I do not think that I would have gone to see this movie if I would have known. Ray B, 3 starsThis movie is so much fun! Don t miss it. Tarantino, DiCaprio, and Pitt knock it out of the park. They will both get Oscar nods, well deserved. Can t wait to see it again and again. Warren W, 4.5 starsCheck out all of the user reviews for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Like this? (Photo by Warner Bros./ courtesy Everett Collection)All 8 Zack Snyder Movies, Ranked by TomatometerDirector Zack Snyder was among the frontlines in the battle to bring back the zombie, his 2004 Certified Fresh remake of Dawn of the Dead nestling in snugly with the likes of Shaun of the Dead and Land of the Dead. But it was with his second feature that he developed a signature style: 300, combining a comic-book palette with unflinching machismo and fetishistic style. The adaptation of the Frank Miller comic was a pop-culture phenomenon, and helped establish the gritty Warner Bros. look on comic-book movies that started with V for Vendetta and was furthered by The Dark Knight. There was no stopping Snyder now, as he next tackled Watchmen, once thought a graphic novel too dense and troubling for film. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga Hoole and Sucker Punch were stepping stones into the world most know Snyder for: As the creative guide behind Superman movies, and the DC Extended Universe beyond. Man of Steel was a big enough box office hit for the studio, and if audiences had some qualms about the direction of the character, their curiosity was nonetheless piqued for the next movie. That would, of course, end up being the biggest title bout of comicdom: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Ben Affleck put on the suit, the first to do so after Christian Bale in his Dark Knight trilogy run, and went mano-a-mano with Henry Cavill. A single word may have put this quarrel between two mama s boys to bed, which opened the path to the next movie referred to in BvS s subtitle. Justice League arrived, pulling in Gal Gadot, who would go on to make the Certified Fresh Wonder Woman, and introducing the new movie versions of The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). Justice League s disappointing Tomatometer and box office have made Release the Snyder cut! a clarion call for the online hordes, referring to the supposed three-hour version of the movie that existed  before studio executives and meddling forced it down to its current 120-minute runtime.Snyder has since lessened his presence within the DCEU (he s still a producer on Wonder Woman 1984), and is returning to where it all began with Army of the Dead, an upcoming Netflix movie starring Dave Bautista about mercenaries who pull off a heist in Vegas during a zombie outbreak. And now, we re pulling a heist ourselves as we sneak into the past and bringing up every Zack Snyder movie ranked by Tomatometer!
Indonesian director Joko Anwar is one of the most exciting horror talents working today, and Impetigore might be his most effective – and surprisingly moving – film to date. The story is free-wheeling and complex, but essentially involves a young woman returning to her ancestral village, where she’s inherited a house. Is it haunted? Probably. Why do the locals seem so suspicious of her? We’re about to find out. This incredibly atmospheric film kicks off with what might be the tensest horror opening of the decade – a strange man terrorizes a toll booth worker – and from there piles on killer set pieces and unforgettable imagery at a clip. Indonesia selected Impetigore as its entry for the Oscars’ international feature category; we hope the Academy takes a risk on this genre gem and shortlists it.Available on: Shudder
Documentary Feels Good Man looks at the how cartoonist Matt Furie’s drawing of a smiling green frog unintentionally became a symbol for hate on the Internet.“This is something that has never happened before,” director Arthur Jones told journalists. “The Anti-Defamation League never has declared a meme a hate symbol before. It has never declared a copyrighted character a hate symbol before.”He says it was “a process” for Furie, who participated in the film, “to figure out how to handle this. He tried to handle that via his artistic community first. Then he tried to find a set of lawyers to collaborate with to enforce the copyright in a way that he felt was right for him. While he s doing this, he s an artist; he s starting a family — there s a lot of stuff going on.”Feels Good Man will air on October 19 as part of PBS’ Independent Lens series.Coming to You from the Bat Cave …(Photo by National Geographic)Journalists caught glimpses of lots of celebrities’ houses through this all-virtual press tour. But only one panel streamed from inside a bat cave: bat scientist Kendra Phelps and epidemiologist Chris Golden introduced us to some new friends while speaking on the panel for National Geographic’s upcoming documentary, Virus Hunters.Airing November 1 to be a companion piece to that month s issue of the magazine, the special will tell “the stories of those heroic experts on the frontlines who are racing to identify the chain of events that could cause the next global pandemic,” said Nat Geo Senior Vice President of Communications Chris Albert, who introduced the panel.“Virus Hunters will aim to offer solutions, and some of those could include the work that Kendra and Jim [Desmond, a fellow panelist and a wildlife veterinarian] are doing where there is monitoring and surveillance of what is actually unfolding naturally within ecosystems,” Golden said. “I think it will beg the question of further policy- and decision-making that would lean on us to really view conservation as an important tool for public-health interventions.”

Earlier this year, the pop culture frenzy that is San Diego Comic-Con opted to go entirely free and entirely online, re-christening itself as Comic-Con@Home and offering fans a Zoom-ified version of what they might normally see at the annual event. Not to be outdone, DC Entertainment is offering a unique streaming experience unlike anything they ve done before also free, and also entirely online called DC FanDome.Initially conceived and promoted as a single 24-hour event, DC FanDome has expanded to accommodate fans who won t be able to see everything they want to see (you can read more about that here). But the main event will happen on Saturday, August 22, when viewers can tune in to the Hall of Heroes, which will cover most of DC Entertainment s tentpole properties, from their big-budget film franchises and a couple of their TV series to video games, comic books, and more. There will be a lot to take in, so if your time is limited, or you just don t want to sit around waiting for the next cool thing to happen, here are the 10 Hall of Heroes panels you probably won t want to miss.Wonder Woman 1984When: 10:00 am (PT)Length: 25 minutesDC FanDome will kick off with a bang with this panel dedicated to the highly anticipated follow-up to 2017 s Wonder Woman. Director Patty Jenkins and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, and Pedro Pascal will be on hand to answer fan questions and share a new sneak peek at the film. The panel description also promises a few more surprises, so you might want to make sure you catch it in case something big drops.Introducing Flash (Film)(Photo by Clay Enos/©Warner Bros. Pictures)When: 11:40 am (PT)Length: 10 minutesThe Flash standalone movie has been batted around in development since 2013, and we aren t officially getting that movie until 2022, but the fact that producer-director Andy Muschietti (It, It Chapter Two), his wife and producing partner Barbara Muschietti, screenwriter Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey), and star Ezra Miller are all showing up for this brief, 10-minute panel indicates they ll have some important things to say and possibly show, if Andy Muschietti s brief appearance in the trailer above is any indication about the upcoming film. The Suicide Squad(Photo by DC Entertainment)When: 11:55 pm (PT)Length: 30 minutesWriter-director James Gunn has been talking up his FanDome panel quite a bit, leading up to the event, and you know if he s excited, it s proba
