Though Barking Dogs is underseen in the West compared to the rest of Bong s filmography (it doesn t have enough reviews for a Tomatometer), the film immediately established the trademarks that would ultimately lead Bong to a historic Oscar victory, including the director s taste for dark humor, lethal thrills, and social commentary, all wrapped in elusive and smooth filmmaking technique.His follow-up, 2003 s Memories of Murder, established Bong as one to watch on the international scene, a director able to take influences from Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and David Fincher and mold them into something fresh. The Host expanded his audience thanks to its high-concept monster movie angle, palatable for genre fans searching for something outside of mainstream fare. He collaborated with Michel Gondry and Leos Carax for Tokyo!. And with Mother, Bong bent the horror genre to his will. Sci-fi was next with Snowpiercer, starring Chris Evans, who naturally drew in plenty of outside interest: Come for Captain America, stay for the kooky and violent class-society parable set on a post-apocalyptic winter train. 2017 s Okja, an environmentalist fable, continued to see Bong refining his ability to mix wildly disparate genres and tones. Every movie he s directed has been designated Certified Fresh by the critics.This all came to a head with Parasite, the unclassifiable film that has whipped audiences into a frenzy for its twisty plot, brazen character work, and social outrage. Parasite made history when it became the first non–English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Strapping on a headset, fans were transported to an alley reminiscent of 76 Totter’s Lane — the key location in the first ever episode of Doctor Who — where the Doctor (voiced by Jodie Whittaker) directs the user in building a device to call the TARDIS. Once it materializes, players get to fulfill the wish of every Doctor Who fan: step inside the TARDIS.The experience is quite intuitive to video game players, but as producer Kiron Ramdewar told Rotten Tomatoes, many fans were just pleased to be in a London back alley picking up different items and working with the Sonic Screwdriver.“One of the key differences in the game is that you do not play the Doctor,” he continued, comparing it to Maze Theory’s Iron Man game, which was also at Comic-Con. “We felt it was important fans had a Doctor Who experience alongside the Doctor.” Instead of playing the Doctor, the player takes on the companion role as the Time Lord, stranded at the end of time, aids the player in piloting the TARDIS through time and space to collect time crystals and repair the continuum. They will also run into familiar Doctor Who adversaries like the Daleks.And it begins with that first glimpse of the TARDIS, which allows players to experience that “it’s bigger on the inside” moment for themselves; a truly palpable sensation we experienced in the demo. Damon may have been the hit movie s lead, but Affleck pulled focus in fascinating ways. Next to Robin Williams’ conversation by the pond, and the famous “it’s not your fault scene,” Affleck  delivered one of the film’s most affecting moments when his character – a construction worker – rebuked Will for not maximizing his potential as a mathematician. The then 25-year-old s ability to move people, and his offbeat and mysterious charisma, had many critics predicting a bright future in prestige projects with a regular awards-season presence. He was going to be more DiCaprio than Stallone. And then something happened.From 1998 to 2006, studios attempted to fashion Ben Affleck into a prototypical leading man and his career went a decidedly different way than many had foreseen. First, he went the American hero route in Michael Bay’s jingoistic disaster movie Armageddon, and was largely accused of overacting as Liv Tyler’s love interest. Then came Force of Nature opposite Sandra Bullock, Reindeer Games with Charlize Theron, the lover’s triangle of Pearl Harbor, and a failed first run at superhero glory in Daredevil. There were bright spots – among them Shakespeare in Love and Changing Lanes – but they were the exceptions. In 2003, his turn in one of the worst films ever made, Gigli, and the next year’s sentimental Jersey Girl, had many forgetting what they originally saw in the promising young actor. (Photo by © Columbia/courtesy Everett Collection)Though Affleck is now lauded as an award-winning filmmaker, his stretch of questionable heartthrob and action-hero film roles during the early aughts instilled the widely held perception that he was a terrible actor. Forbes declared him Hollywood s biggest disappointment; others said he should stay behind the camera for good. But lately, with acclaimed turns in films like The Way Back, Affleck is reminding critics and audiences of the promise he showed early in his career, and his singular ability to portray forlorn and damaged characters seeking redemption. For those who ve watched his career closely, though, there has always been great work. It s about time we reconsider Affleck’s acting ability and recognize him as one of his generation’s great performers. Following Daredevil and other public failures, it was another superhero role of sorts that showed us again what Affleck was capable of. In 2006, the actor sharply shifted gears when he played former Superman George Reeves in Allen Coulter’s tragic biopic Hollywoodland. Here, Affleck played an actor trapped by the limited perceptions of his talent – a subject which presumably felt near to Affleck at the time. Reeves comes to hate the fame Superman brought to him, and turns to wrestling in the vain hope of revitalizing his career. The movie closes with a visceral sequence in which Reeves commits suicide with a Luger pistol. We watch as Affleck despondently stares into the distance as a tear grips his cheek; upon a close-up, he slightly turns his head, and the anger and hollowness of the man play vividly in his eyes. Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)After the triumph of Gone Baby Gone, his first film as director, Affleck leaned into portraying miserably flawed men. In the taut political thriller State of Play, he’s a Congressman implicated in the death of his lover; in the exhilarating crime caper, The Town, which he also directed, his character severs himself from the love of his life after a botched robbery; in The Company Men, he explores corporate America’s apathy toward the middle-class worker. And though he plays the hero in the Oscar-winning Argo – a CIA specialist extracting American citizens from Iran during the hostage crisis – his character’s family life is fractured. Affleck s Tony Mendez loves his son, but so often misses the most important events in his life; when he tells Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin) he has a child, his voice cracks with regret. In these roles, Affleck rarely gets the girl, but he always claims the heartache. Affleck s most fantastically flawed and fascinating creation came in David Fincher’s unnerving thriller Gone Girl. An anti-romantic lead performance, Nick Dunne is neither suave nor appealing. Instead, the role turned the tables on everything studios wanted the actor to be during the late 1990s and early 2000s – America s heartthrob – by transforming him into the disturbing and philandering husband accused of murdering his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike). (Photo by Merrick Morton/TM and ©Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. All rights reserved./Courtesy Everett Collection)While Pike rightfully earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her turn as the psychotic Amy, and the film was lauded for its skillful direction and shock twists, Gone Girl’s most memorable scene – and its iconic image – centers on a subtle acting moment from Affleck: The actor simply standing, feigning a smile while posing with the missing person’s poster of his wife. Dressed in a rumpled shirt and clearly exhausted, his half-hearted grin intimates both guilt and foolishness at once, a feeling that carries through his whole performance. When Nick goes on a talk show to apologize to Amy, hoping to coax her out of hiding through contrition, Affleck plays his remorse as perfectly canned, and when the blood-stained Amy returns home, his look of awestruck misery zings. And then, of course, came Batfleck. With Robert Pattinson now cast as Batman, there’s a keenness from some to forget Affleck’s caped crusader. Many fans are hoping Pattinson, following his psychologically violent roles in indie flicks like Good Time and The Lighthouse, will deliver some damaged goods and help them erase the memories of Affleck s Dark Knight and the movies in which he featured. But many fail to remember the promise the actor showed when first cast by Zack Snyder – and why he was, in many ways, so perfectly cast. (Photo by © Warner Bros. / Courtesy Everett Collection)The Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a haunted loner born from the tragic milieu of Gotham, encompassed many of what audiences had seen in Affleck’s prior career highlights. Hollywood’s onetime golden boy, driven by failure toward darker material, fit perfectly into the older and more jaded mold Snyder crafted. Moreover, Affleck’s past as a romantic leading man, though spotty in quality, informed the belief he could adeptly capture the billionaire playboy persona of Bruce Wayne. And he largely succeeded in the role, ultimately, bringing the hardened edges grief provides, though his performance languished under a flawed script. This year, Affleck channeled a career’s worth of demons and struggles into Jack Cunningham, the basketball coach at the center of Gavin O Connor’s Certified Fresh dark sports drama, The Way Back. Though Jack’s an alcoholic father, still reeling from the collapse of his marriage and the death of his adolescent son from cancer, he’s recruited by his former Catholic high school to coach a now-crestfallen team. In Dawn of Justice, when he leaned into Wayne’s tragic past and infamously screamed “Martha,” he was lampooned; as Coach Cunningham, Affleck had the independence to sketch those shades of grief and regret differently. Whether attending a triggering birthday party for his son’s best friend, or later during his drunken spell through a quiet neighborhood, he heartbreakingly portrays the destructive depths of grief and addiction. Critics and audiences took notice: Slashfilm s Hoai-Tran Bui described Affleck’s performance as “tremendous” and “raw,” while Christy Lemire described his portrayal as “the best work” he had done. The Way Back has even garnered the actor some quiet Oscar buzz. The film s success is fitting considering Cunningham, a construction worker, is a mirror of what Affleck’s character in Good Will Hunting might have become after Will left: a working stiff punching the time clock of life without the steady guidance of his friend. By looking toward the past, in concert with his past triumphs, Affleck proves both then and now his generationally great talent. The Way Back is available to rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Google Play, and Amazon Prime.

With the success of series like The Terror, The Haunting of Hill House, and American Horror Story, television has never been a better medium for creators interested in telling spooky stories on a regular basis. The latest entry into the genre is Creepshow, a TV anthology version of the Stephen King/George A. Romero horror film that debuts today on genre-focused streaming service Shudder.Spearheaded by The Walking Dead boss Greg Nicotero, the series pays tribute to its roots by telling frightening stories of many ilks (gory, suspenseful, silly, unsettling). The first episode features the installments “Gray Matter,” based on the King story of the same name about an alcoholic whose booze of choice might affect him in more nefarious ways, and “The House of the Head,” about a girl who discovers a killer severed head in her dollhouse.Earlier this year, Rotten Tomatoes visited the series’ Atlanta set, where we walked through blood-soaked sets, saw creatures being made, and saw a werewolf decapitate a Nazi. Here are six things we learned about the show while we were there.1. It’s in good hands with superfan Greg Nicotero(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)The Walking Dead boss is a lifelong horror fan who got his start working on special effects makeup with Romero and Creepshow’s effects mastermind Tom Savini on Romero s Day of the Dead.With this Creepshow reboot, “I want to embrace the spirit of the original movie,” Nicotero said from his windowless office in an Atlanta production facility. “I’m not rebooting anything. It’s not like, ‘Oh we’re going to upgrade it and retell it.’ It’s really like you’re picking up another issue of Creepshow, and these are the stories.”The stories include works from King, one from King’s son, Joe Hill, plus more adaptations of existing stories and a few original tales. Nicotero was so dedicated to the project that he began working on it during The Walking Dead, taking just a week off before flying back to Atlanta to begin pre-production on Creepshow.2. The series was filmed in an uber-short time frame(Photo by Shudder)Each of the six episodes contains two stories, and each story has just three and a half days to film.“You can’t stop filming for 12 hours. You can’t eat, you can’t go to the bathroom, and you’ve just got to keep filming and go crazy,” Nicotero said in a short break while filming the final two installments.On one stage, special effects experts prepared a dummy for its impending decapitation — the fake blood spurting everywhere meant they had just one take (or risk spending hours cleaning up the blood only to set it all up again. On the other, the production team used a forklift to place a massive monster they created on the set of the story they’d begin filming the next day.Originally, Nicotero wanted to film even more stories, but with a packed production schedule spanning from the beginning of January through the end of March, it wasn’t enough time to fully realize that many tales.“I was pretty greedy at first. I was like, ‘We should do three stories per episode, and each story should be like 17 minutes,’ and then we got into production and I was like, ‘What the f was I thinking? We should do two, ” he admitted.3. So it was only natural Nicotero would hire him to helm a story of his own (Joe Hill’s “By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain”).“It’s 98 percent practical effects — all the creature work, all the makeup, the werewolves, the puppets,” Nicotero said.Evidence of that mandate is strewn about the production spaces that once held Gabrielle Union’s BET drama Being Mary Jane — cardboard boxes loaded with fake animal carcasses are piled next to busts of various creatures. And just about every line between Nat and Clint (Jeremy Renner) in Endgame suggests Hawkeye will be along for that ride. Consequently, our early guess that the film will be a prequel focusing on her recruitment by S.H.I.E.L.D. seems more and more likely. Unless, in some bizarre twist, it will also feature Clint trying to rescue her from her fate. As it will be a Phase 4 film, it has to tie to something in the present-day story. Nat’s Endgame death makes Black Widow all the more exciting because we now have this question: how does it fit into the post-Infinity Saga tapestry?Similarly, the continued end states for Vision and Loki would seemingly impact their upcoming Disney+ limited series. Will they be set in the Infinity Saga era or define new places for them in Phase 4? Considering Elizabeth Olsen’s recent tease that WandaVision will see the characters in a “1950s” setting, it is easy to image the program will take its cue from Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta s phenomenal 2017 Vision series and see Wanda (Olsen) recreate the android for an anachronistic, domestic life. But considering that series ends with all of Vision s dreams broken or on fire, we imagine Wanda’s dream life will end in similar flames.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Loki, on the other hand, presents a more interesting case. While the MCU version we met in the first Thor picture is still dead, the one who escaped with the Tesseract in the middle of Endgame is presumably out in the wild and is the one we will see in the forthcoming Loki series, which is reportedly set to feature the the God of Mischief creating trouble across history. This version of the character is still a villain lacking the emotional growth of the character we saw in Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War. If he does prove to be the focus of the limited series, it will certainly be more interesting. And considering audiences forgive him for a lot of heinous acts, the program could even attempt to test their gracious attitudes toward the charming trickster.And while not a death, we imagine Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) ultimate Endgame state will precipitate a title change for Disney+ s Falcon and the Winter Solider to something more succinct, like Captain America.Oh, and Tony? Let’s just assume we’ll see him again in 2028 for the 20th Anniversary Marvel Studios film, resurrected to counter whatever threat the collective heroes are facing in that moment.Time Is Immutable, Except When It Isn’t: Time Travel Just Changed EverythingWith all its joking criticism of Back to the Future, Endgame seemingly sides with the notion that time is an immutable series of events, and changes to the past will create a new timeline while the time-traveler causing those changes returns to their original, unchanged present.OK, yeah, that’s confusing. To simplify: Loki’s Endgame escape does not change Thor’s experiences with him in Thor: The Dark World, Ragnarok, or Infinity War because time cannot be altered. The escaped Loki in Endgame is part of one of those tangent realities the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) warned Hulk about. This is why Tony could unmake the Thanos from 2014 without erasing the events of Guardians of the Galaxy or any of the subsequent films. All of it still happened. This is also why Nebula could shoot her past self without it affecting her present-day form.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)If you can wrap your head around the notion of an unchangeable past, Endgame s rules about time travel are simple enough. Certainly simpler than the temporal mechanics of film and television series like The Terminator, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Doctor Who, or even various X-Men stories across comics, television, and film.And then we get to Endgame’s closing moments, with an aged Steve Rogers, who clearly took the slow path back to his friends after dropping off the Infinity Stones in their original places in time. If time is immutable, then he gets to live his life with Peggy (Hayley Atwell) without altering the timeline. Like Loki, he creates another tangent reality. But his very appearance to hand off his shield and identity to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) means the timeline is not as secure as Hulk, Tony, or even the Ancient One assumed it to be. Unless, of course, he found a way to use Loki s Tesseract (in combination with the Time Stone) to cross timelines.But it seems more likely that Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) was right all along and the rules from Back to the Future are in play (it s no accident the team breaks all of them across the plot of Endgame). Back in Marvel Comics, time travel only ever delays the inevitable. The dark reality from “Days of Future Past” always threatens to reappear in the X-Men s future while Cable’s many attempts to prevent Apocalypse’s reign some centuries from now only leads to some other character taking the External’s place in that grim future. But in almost all cases, time travel does indeed alter the timeline.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The older Steve’s presence in Endgame indicates that time in the MCU is also malleable. To borrow a line from The Flash, the timeline can be changed and that may prove to be as big of a threat as the Infinity Stones themselves – especially as all you need is some Pym Particles and a little know-how to invade the past and alter history. And even if time is solid, those tangent realities the Ancient One feared could pose some threat in Phase 4.No Stinger Scenes? Like, Forever?Now this one was a big shock for anyone who was ready for just a little bit more MCU after 183 minutes: Endgame features no mid-credit or post-credit stinger scenes, a first for a Marvel Studios picture. Considering the stinger scene’s proliferation across other studios, it is possible Marvel will drop them entirely from here on out. It would be a bold move and make all our Phase 4 speculations wilder, because Marvel would not be teasing the Next Big Thing as soon as its current release ends. Imagine an Ant-Man without that Captain America: Civil War moment or Thor: Ragnarok without the cut to Thanos’s massive ship. And even without the Next Big Thing to tease, post-credit stingers offer a nice final thought – like the shawarma scene at the end of Marvel’s Avengers or Captain America’s speech about patience after the Spider-Man: Homecoming’s credits.In some ways, it’s fitting, then, that Spider-Man: Far From Home will answer this meta-cliffhanger. Hence, the green light for Angel.With 39% on the Tomatometer, the movie ranks somewhere in the middle critically for Butler. Compare it to previous entries: 49% and 26%, respectively. This for an actor who has never top-lined a film registering higher than 60%, achieved by RocknRolla and 300 both. With March openings, the Fallen films grossed multiples of 3.25 and 2.88 over their opening weekends.
