亚博官方网采用百度引擎6(Baidu 3)(Photo by Magnolia/courtesy Everett Collection)All Bong Joon-ho Movies Ranked by TomatometerSouth Korean director Bong Joon-ho made his debut in 2000 with Barking Dogs Never Bite, about an unemployed grad student who takes measures against a neighbor s incessantly yapping pooch. Things, as you may imagine, don t go as planned. Though Barking Dogs is underseen in the West compared to the rest of Bong s filmography (it doesn t have enough reviews for a Tomatometer), the film immediately established the trademarks that would ultimately lead Bong to a historic Oscar victory, including the director s taste for dark humor, lethal thrills, and social commentary, all wrapped in elusive and smooth filmmaking technique. His follow-up, 2003 s Memories of Murder, established Bong as one to watch on the international scene, a director able to take influences from Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and David Fincher and mold them into something fresh. The Host expanded his audience thanks to its high-concept monster movie angle, palatable for genre fans searching for something outside of mainstream fare. He collaborated with Michel Gondry and Leos Carax for Tokyo!. And with Mother, Bong bent the horror genre to his will. Sci-fi was next with Snowpiercer, starring Chris Evans, who naturally drew in plenty of outside interest: Come for Captain America, stay for the kooky and violent class-society parable set on a post-apocalyptic winter train. 2017 s Okja, an environmentalist fable, continued to see Bong refining his ability to mix wildly disparate genres and tones. Every movie he s directed has been designated Certified Fresh by the critics. This all came to a head with Parasite, the unclassifiable film that has whipped audiences into a frenzy for its twisty plot, brazen character work, and social outrage. Parasite made history when it became the first non–English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Bong collected that statue at the 2020 ceremony, along with Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best International Film, tying Walt Disney for the most Oscars awarded to a person in a single night.Having officially put South Korea on the map forever in cinema, we re looking back on Bong Joon-ho s movies, ranked by Tomatometer.

Ahead of his sophomore directorial effort, The Kid, Vincent D Onofrio (who also co-stars in the movie) sat down with Rotten Tomatoes to talk in detail about the new film. Whether it was the historical context of Pat Garrett s legacy as a lawman or the small, intricate details he picked up from real-life photos of Billy the Kid, D Onofrio was willing to go the extra mile for the sake of accuracy. And that all-star cast? D Onofrio talks about harnessing the poetry of Ethan Hawke and helping Chris Pratt unleash the darkness hidden within him to get performances we haven t seen from them before. We suffered a huge, huge, huge loss, and it s something that we re going to be feeling for as long as we re lucky enough to keep making the show, creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told the crowd before playing a tribute video to the actor, who died in March after suffering a stroke. The first episode will be a standalone hour paying tribute to both Perry and the character of Fred Andrews, and will include a special appearance by Perry s friend and former Beverly Hills, 90210 castmate Shannen Doherty. Also appearing on the show this season will be Molly Ringwald, who plays Archie s mom — and she ll be back more or less full time this season rather than introduce a mysterious, never-before-heard-from uncle or something to take over the parental role.Another special casting: Teen soap veteran Kerr Smith, a.k.a. Jack on Dawson s Creek, who will play the new principal of Riverdale High.K.J. Apa, Cole Sprouse, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, and Madelaine Petsch joined Aguirre-Sacasa on stage to reveal more about the season, which will include a Halloween episode where someone will die (though not someone who was present at the panel), a member of Veronica s extended family dropping by, a battle of the bands episode, and flash-forwards to the jaw-dropping moment from the season 3 finale (with Archie, Betty, and Veronica covered in blood and burning their clothes).Supernatural Says Goodbye to Comic-ConSupernatural hit San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday for one last time after Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins announced earlier this year that the long-running CW series will end after its 15th season. With the end in sight, Supernatural s final Comic-Con panel brought all the feels, as both Winchester brothers teared up during their hour in Hall H. I’m really lucky because my friendships won’t go away, Padalecki said. And Sam Winchester, for me, won’t go away. He’ll be a part of me forever. Added Ackles,  I’m really proud of the work that this team has done for this long. There’s a lot that goes in and it takes a lot of very talented people to give you guys the best product we can make. I’m really proud of that product. After this long on a show to truly love what we do and be proud to hang my hat on that, that’s one of the legacies I’m proud of. I put in the effort, we all did, nobody phones it in and I’m thankful you guys can appreciate that. Supernatural is the longest-running genre show on American television. That is an achievement in and of itself. The legacy the cast and crew are leaving is one people will surely celebrate for years to come. I hope in the future that this fandom continues to function as a family, said Collins as the panel came to an end. I hope that you guys continue to be a force for good and companionship in the world. You’ve been so supportive of one another and so supportive of us. We all love you guys very much. To pay the fans back for their decade and a half of loyalty, the guys surprised the fans at the San Diego Convention Center by giving away a fully restored 1967 Impala (a replica of the show’s beloved “Baby”).Mayans MC Will Welcome Some Sons of Anarchy in Season 2Be part of the club. Also of note: The network screened the first 15 minutes of the season 2 premiere, and according to reports, the episode picks up several months after the first season finale.Doctor Who — The Edge Of Time VR Game Offers Fans A First-Person View Of The TARDISThough Doctor Who sat out Comic-Con 2019, the Doctor’s presence was still felt throughout the weekend via PlayStack and Maze Theory’s Doctor Who — The Edge of Time VR game at the BBC America booth. Strapping on a headset, fans were transported to an alley reminiscent of 76 Totter’s Lane — the key location in the first ever episode of Doctor Who — where the Doctor (voiced by Jodie Whittaker) directs the user in building a device to call the TARDIS. Once it materializes, players get to fulfill the wish of every Doctor Who fan: step inside the TARDIS.The experience is quite intuitive to video game players, but as producer Kiron Ramdewar told Rotten Tomatoes, many fans were just pleased to be in a London back alley picking up different items and working with the Sonic Screwdriver.“One of the key differences in the game is that you do not play the Doctor,” he continued, comparing it to Maze Theory’s Iron Man game, which was also at Comic-Con. “We felt it was important fans had a Doctor Who experience alongside the Doctor.” Instead of playing the Doctor, the player takes on the companion role as the Time Lord, stranded at the end of time, aids the player in piloting the TARDIS through time and space to collect time crystals and repair the continuum. They will also run into familiar Doctor Who adversaries like the Daleks. And it begins with that first glimpse of the TARDIS, which allows players to experience that “it’s bigger on the inside” moment for themselves; a truly palpable sensation we experienced in the demo. Scanned from the actual TARDIS console room set, the entire locale is fully interactive — including the biscuit dispenser.Doctor Who — The Edge of Time comes to Playstation VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Vive Cosmos in September.

3.11.9 7月喜迎(Photo by © Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)When Ben Affleck first burst onto most moviegoers’ radars alongside childhood best friend Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting – and collected a screenplay Oscar for his efforts – he seemed destined for a venerable acting career. Damon may have been the hit movie s lead, but Affleck pulled focus in fascinating ways. Next to Robin Williams’ conversation by the pond, and the famous “it’s not your fault scene,” Affleck  delivered one of the film’s most affecting moments when his character – a construction worker – rebuked Will for not maximizing his potential as a mathematician. The then 25-year-old s ability to move people, and his offbeat and mysterious charisma, had many critics predicting a bright future in prestige projects with a regular awards-season presence. He was going to be more DiCaprio than Stallone. And then something happened. From 1998 to 2006, studios attempted to fashion Ben Affleck into a prototypical leading man and his career went a decidedly different way than many had foreseen. First, he went the American hero route in Michael Bay’s jingoistic disaster movie Armageddon, and was largely accused of overacting as Liv Tyler’s love interest. Then came Force of Nature opposite Sandra Bullock, Reindeer Games with Charlize Theron, the lover’s triangle of Pearl Harbor, and a failed first run at superhero glory in Daredevil. There were bright spots – among them Shakespeare in Love and Changing Lanes – but they were the exceptions. In 2003, his turn in one of the worst films ever made, Gigli, and the next year’s sentimental Jersey Girl, had many forgetting what they originally saw in the promising young actor. (Photo by © Columbia/courtesy Everett Collection)Though Affleck is now lauded as an award-winning filmmaker, his stretch of questionable heartthrob and action-hero film roles during the early aughts instilled the widely held perception that he was a terrible actor. Forbes declared him Hollywood s biggest disappointment; others said he should stay behind the camera for good. But lately, with acclaimed turns in films like The Way Back, Affleck is reminding critics and audiences of the promise he showed early in his career, and his singular ability to portray forlorn and damaged characters seeking redemption. For those who ve watched his career closely, though, there has always been great work. It s about time we reconsider Affleck’s acting ability and recognize him as one of his generation’s great performers. Following Daredevil and other public failures, it was another superhero role of sorts that showed us again what Affleck was capable of. In 2006, the actor sharply shifted gears when he played former Superman George Reeves in Allen Coulter’s tragic biopic Hollywoodland. Here, Affleck played an actor trapped by the limited perceptions of his talent – a subject which presumably felt near to Affleck at the time. Reeves comes to hate the fame Superman brought to him, and turns to wrestling in the vain hope of revitalizing his career. The movie closes with a visceral sequence in which Reeves commits suicide with a Luger pistol. We watch as Affleck despondently stares into the distance as a tear grips his cheek; upon a close-up, he slightly turns his head, and the anger and hollowness of the man play vividly in his eyes. Few actors evoke the catastrophe of the soul as well as Affleck does here.(Photo by ©Warner Bros. Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)After the triumph of Gone Baby Gone, his first film as director, Affleck leaned into portraying miserably flawed men. In the taut political thriller State of Play, he’s a Congressman implicated in the death of his lover; in the exhilarating crime caper, The Town, which he also directed, his character severs himself from the love of his life after a botched robbery; in The Company Men, he explores corporate America’s apathy toward the middle-class worker. And though he plays the hero in the Oscar-winning Argo – a CIA specialist extracting American citizens from Iran during the hostage crisis – his character’s family life is fractured. Affleck s Tony Mendez loves his son, but so often misses the most important events in his life; when he tells Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin) he has a child, his voice cracks with regret. In these roles, Affleck rarely gets the girl, but he always claims the heartache. Affleck s most fantastically flawed and fascinating creation came in David Fincher’s unnerving thriller Gone Girl. An anti-romantic lead performance, Nick Dunne is neither suave nor appealing. Instead, the role turned the tables on everything studios wanted the actor to be during the late 1990s and early 2000s – America s heartthrob – by transforming him into the disturbing and philandering husband accused of murdering his wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike). (Photo by Merrick Morton/TM and ©Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation. All rights reserved./Courtesy Everett Collection)While Pike rightfully earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her turn as the psychotic Amy, and the film was lauded for its skillful direction and shock twists, Gone Girl’s most memorable scene – and its iconic image – centers on a subtle acting moment from Affleck: The actor simply standing, feigning a smile while posing with the missing person’s poster of his wife. Dressed in a rumpled shirt and clearly exhausted, his half-hearted grin intimates both guilt and foolishness at once, a feeling that carries through his whole performance. When Nick goes on a talk show to apologize to Amy, hoping to coax her out of hiding through contrition, Affleck plays his remorse as perfectly canned, and when the blood-stained Amy returns home, his look of awestruck misery zings. And then, of course, came Batfleck. With Robert Pattinson now cast as Batman, there’s a keenness from some to forget Affleck’s caped crusader. Many fans are hoping Pattinson, following his psychologically violent roles in indie flicks like Good Time and The Lighthouse, will deliver some damaged goods and help them erase the memories of Affleck s Dark Knight and the movies in which he featured. But many fail to remember the promise the actor showed when first cast by Zack Snyder – and why he was, in many ways, so perfectly cast. (Photo by © Warner Bros. / Courtesy Everett Collection)The Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a haunted loner born from the tragic milieu of Gotham, encompassed many of what audiences had seen in Affleck’s prior career highlights. Hollywood’s onetime golden boy, driven by failure toward darker material, fit perfectly into the older and more jaded mold Snyder crafted. Moreover, Affleck’s past as a romantic leading man, though spotty in quality, informed the belief he could adeptly capture the billionaire playboy persona of Bruce Wayne. And he largely succeeded in the role, ultimately, bringing the hardened edges grief provides, though his performance languished under a flawed script. This year, Affleck channeled a career’s worth of demons and struggles into Jack Cunningham, the basketball coach at the center of Gavin O Connor’s Certified Fresh dark sports drama, The Way Back. Though Jack’s an alcoholic father, still reeling from the collapse of his marriage and the death of his adolescent son from cancer, he’s recruited by his former Catholic high school to coach a now-crestfallen team. The onetime basketball star, now a construction worker, reluctantly grapples with his addictions for a chance at redemption. (Photo by © Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)The role resonated with much of what we know about Affleck’s personal life, and it gave him great freedom, too. In Dawn of Justice, when he leaned into Wayne’s tragic past and infamously screamed “Martha,” he was lampooned; as Coach Cunningham, Affleck had the independence to sketch those shades of grief and regret differently. Whether attending a triggering birthday party for his son’s best friend, or later during his drunken spell through a quiet neighborhood, he heartbreakingly portrays the destructive depths of grief and addiction. Critics and audiences took notice: Slashfilm s Hoai-Tran Bui described Affleck’s performance as “tremendous” and “raw,” while Christy Lemire described his portrayal as “the best work” he had done. The Way Back has even garnered the actor some quiet Oscar buzz. The film s success is fitting considering Cunningham, a construction worker, is a mirror of what Affleck’s character in Good Will Hunting might have become after Will left: a working stiff punching the time clock of life without the steady guidance of his friend. By looking toward the past, in concert with his past triumphs, Affleck proves both then and now his generationally great talent. The Way Back is available to rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Google Play, and Amazon Prime.

With the success of series like The Terror, The Haunting of Hill House, and American Horror Story, television has never been a better medium for creators interested in telling spooky stories on a regular basis. The latest entry into the genre is Creepshow, a TV anthology version of the Stephen King/George A. Romero horror film that debuts today on genre-focused streaming service Shudder.Spearheaded by The Walking Dead boss Greg Nicotero, the series pays tribute to its roots by telling frightening stories of many ilks (gory, suspenseful, silly, unsettling). The first episode features the installments “Gray Matter,” based on the King story of the same name about an alcoholic whose booze of choice might affect him in more nefarious ways, and “The House of the Head,” about a girl who discovers a killer severed head in her dollhouse.Earlier this year, Rotten Tomatoes visited the series’ Atlanta set, where we walked through blood-soaked sets, saw creatures being made, and saw a werewolf decapitate a Nazi. Here are six things we learned about the show while we were there.1. It’s in good hands with superfan Greg Nicotero(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)The Walking Dead boss is a lifelong horror fan who got his start working on special effects makeup with Romero and Creepshow’s effects mastermind Tom Savini on Romero s Day of the Dead. With this Creepshow reboot, “I want to embrace the spirit of the original movie,” Nicotero said from his windowless office in an Atlanta production facility. “I’m not rebooting anything. It’s not like, ‘Oh we’re going to upgrade it and retell it.’ It’s really like you’re picking up another issue of Creepshow, and these are the stories.”The stories include works from King, one from King’s son, Joe Hill, plus more adaptations of existing stories and a few original tales. Nicotero was so dedicated to the project that he began working on it during The Walking Dead, taking just a week off before flying back to Atlanta to begin pre-production on Creepshow.2. The series was filmed in an uber-short time frame(Photo by Shudder)Each of the six episodes contains two stories, and each story has just three and a half days to film.“You can’t stop filming for 12 hours. You can’t eat, you can’t go to the bathroom, and you’ve just got to keep filming and go crazy,” Nicotero said in a short break while filming the final two installments. On one stage, special effects experts prepared a dummy for its impending decapitation — the fake blood spurting everywhere meant they had just one take (or risk spending hours cleaning up the blood only to set it all up again. On the other, the production team used a forklift to place a massive monster they created on the set of the story they’d begin filming the next day.Originally, Nicotero wanted to film even more stories, but with a packed production schedule spanning from the beginning of January through the end of March, it wasn’t enough time to fully realize that many tales.“I was pretty greedy at first. I was like, ‘We should do three stories per episode, and each story should be like 17 minutes,’ and then we got into production and I was like, ‘What the f was I thinking? We should do two, ” he admitted.3. For practical effects, Nicotero brought in the experts.(Photo by Shudder)Special effects guru Savini worked closely with Romero on many of his films, including the original Creepshow. So it was only natural Nicotero would hire him to helm a story of his own (Joe Hill’s “By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain”).“It’s 98 percent practical effects — all the creature work, all the makeup, the werewolves, the puppets,” Nicotero said.Evidence of that mandate is strewn about the production spaces that once held Gabrielle Union’s BET drama Being Mary Jane — cardboard boxes loaded with fake animal carcasses are piled next to busts of various creatures. (And sets from s

(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)In the short term, Black Widow is set to appear in her own feature film within the next few years. And just about every line between Nat and Clint (Jeremy Renner) in Endgame suggests Hawkeye will be along for that ride. Consequently, our early guess that the film will be a prequel focusing on her recruitment by S.H.I.E.L.D. seems more and more likely. Unless, in some bizarre twist, it will also feature Clint trying to rescue her from her fate. As it will be a Phase 4 film, it has to tie to something in the present-day story. Nat’s Endgame death makes Black Widow all the more exciting because we now have this question: how does it fit into the post-Infinity Saga tapestry?Similarly, the continued end states for Vision and Loki would seemingly impact their upcoming Disney+ limited series. Will they be set in the Infinity Saga era or define new places for them in Phase 4? Considering Elizabeth Olsen’s recent tease that WandaVision will see the characters in a “1950s” setting, it is easy to image the program will take its cue from Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta s phenomenal 2017 Vision series and see Wanda (Olsen) recreate the android for an anachronistic, domestic life. But considering that series ends with all of Vision s dreams broken or on fire, we imagine Wanda’s dream life will end in similar flames.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Loki, on the other hand, presents a more interesting case. While the MCU version we met in the first Thor picture is still dead, the one who escaped with the Tesseract in the middle of Endgame is presumably out in the wild and is the one we will see in the forthcoming Loki series, which is reportedly set to feature the the God of Mischief creating trouble across history. This version of the character is still a villain lacking the emotional growth of the character we saw in Thor: Ragnarok and Infinity War. If he does prove to be the focus of the limited series, it will certainly be more interesting. And considering audiences forgive him for a lot of heinous acts, the program could even attempt to test their gracious attitudes toward the charming trickster. And while not a death, we imagine Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) ultimate Endgame state will precipitate a title change for Disney+ s Falcon and the Winter Solider to something more succinct, like Captain America.Oh, and Tony? Let’s just assume we’ll see him again in 2028 for the 20th Anniversary Marvel Studios film, resurrected to counter whatever threat the collective heroes are facing in that moment.Time Is Immutable, Except When It Isn’t: Time Travel Just Changed EverythingWith all its joking criticism of Back to the Future, Endgame seemingly sides with the notion that time is an immutable series of events, and changes to the past will create a new timeline while the time-traveler causing those changes returns to their original, unchanged present.OK, yeah, that’s confusing. To simplify: Loki’s Endgame escape does not change Thor’s experiences with him in Thor: The Dark World, Ragnarok, or Infinity War because time cannot be altered. The escaped Loki in Endgame is part of one of those tangent realities the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) warned Hulk about. This is why Tony could unmake the Thanos from 2014 without erasing the events of Guardians of the Galaxy or any of the subsequent films. All of it still happened. This is also why Nebula could shoot her past self without it affecting her present-day form.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)If you can wrap your head around the notion of an unchangeable past, Endgame s rules about time travel are simple enough. Certainly simpler than the temporal mechanics of film and television series like The Terminator, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Doctor Who, or even various X-Men stories across comics, television, and film. And then we get to Endgame’s closing moments, with an aged Steve Rogers, who clearly took the slow path back to his friends after dropping off the Infinity Stones in their original places in time. If time is immutable, then he gets to live his life with Peggy (Hayley Atwell) without altering the timeline. Like Loki, he creates another tangent reality. But his very appearance to hand off his shield and identity to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) means the timeline is not as secure as Hulk, Tony, or even the Ancient One assumed it to be. Unless, of course, he found a way to use Loki s Tesseract (in combination with the Time Stone) to cross timelines. But it seems more likely that Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) was right all along and the rules from Back to the Future are in play (it s no accident the team breaks all of them across the plot of Endgame). Back in Marvel Comics, time travel only ever delays the inevitable. The dark reality from “Days of Future Past” always threatens to reappear in the X-Men s future while Cable’s many attempts to prevent Apocalypse’s reign some centuries from now only leads to some other character taking the External’s place in that grim future. But in almost all cases, time travel does indeed alter the timeline.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The older Steve’s presence in Endgame indicates that time in the MCU is also malleable. To borrow a line from The Flash, the timeline can be changed and that may prove to be as big of a threat as the Infinity Stones themselves – especially as all you need is some Pym Particles and a little know-how to invade the past and alter history. And even if time is solid, those tangent realities the Ancient One feared could pose some threat in Phase 4.No Stinger Scenes? Like, Forever? Now this one was a big shock for anyone who was ready for just a little bit more MCU after 183 minutes: Endgame features no mid-credit or post-credit stinger scenes, a first for a Marvel Studios picture. Considering the stinger scene’s proliferation across other studios, it is possible Marvel will drop them entirely from here on out. It would be a bold move and make all our Phase 4 speculations wilder, because Marvel would not be teasing the Next Big Thing as soon as its current release ends. Imagine an Ant-Man without that Captain America: Civil War moment or Thor: Ragnarok without the cut to Thanos’s massive ship. And even without the Next Big Thing to tease, post-credit stingers offer a nice final thought – like the shawarma scene at the end of Marvel’s Avengers or Captain America’s speech about patience after the Spider-Man: Homecoming’s credits. In some ways, it’s fitting, then, that Spider-Man: Far From Home will answer this meta-cliffhanger. If it features a stinger, then we know the practice is here to stay in Phase 4. And, presumably, that stinger will itself be the first few moments of that new phase.Avengers: Endgame is in theaters everywhere (but you already knew that)

Resistance keeps certain aspects of these larger-than-life baddies grounded and relatable. We do have amazing villains. People read into the villains as villains in their own lives or they may read into them as historical villains, Henson explained. We talked about the ancient Romans as conquerors who appropriated different lands that they settled in. Those were more of our references for the villains. But [the Skeksis] are delicious villains and they re great and are very horrible and very scary. From the sound of things, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will blend a fair share of horror, fantasy and drama together that is sure to appeal to all ages. The one-man, two-character comedy is receiving mostly positive reviews, which highlight a sentimentality over hilarity as well as a surprising performance from its lead in his dual roles. Here’s what critics are saying about An American Pickle:Does HBO Max have its first hit on its hands? It marks an auspicious beginning and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.  Pete Hammond, DeadlineAn American Pickle is an absolutely brilliant two-hander… it’s exactly what we need right now.  Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionIn a time when we can all use a good laugh, An American Pickle very much delivers.  Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendEven premiering on HBO Max, it feels awfully inconsequential, like an ambitious Funny or Die sketch.  Matt Singer, ScreenCrush(Photo by HBO Max)How is Seth Rogen? This dual performance is the best, purest thing he s ever done as an artist, in front of or behind the camera. Matt Zoller Seitz, RogerEbert.comAn American Pickle features what may be the most mature performance we’ve seen from Seth Rogen in a while. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesThe most exciting part of this pickle is Rogen s breaking of his manchild mold to explore roles more challenging, rich, and uniquely funny. Kristy Puchko, IGNAn American Pickle gets by on the strength (or make that strengths) of Rogen’s performance. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmRogen is so adept at breathing depth into two distinct roles. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterBoth roles ultimately demand a lot from Rogen, and he is exceptional. Eric Eisenberg, Cinema BlendSo two Seth Rogens isn t too much Seth Rogen?I was expecting something along the lines of Adam Sandler in Jack and Jill, but what I got instead is reminiscent of Nic Cage in Adaptation. Rendy Jones, Rendy ReviewsThe movie trickery, laid on with extensive CGI effects, is impressive, aided immeasurably by Rogen in top form on both accounts. Pete Hammond, DeadlineWhile the premise is promising, the execution aches from the growing pains of Rogen s shifting persona. Kristy Puchko, IGN(Photo by HBO Max)Is it funny? It’s not laugh-out-loud funny; it’s folksy funny. Michael Roffman, Consequence of SoundAn American Pickle is more interesting than laugh-out-loud hilarious. Mike Ryan, Uproxx[It’s] a comedy too contrived to be convincing and too formulaic to be funny. Owen Gleiberman, VarietyThere are some scattered laughs but it s not particularly funny. Brian Truitt, USA TodayAn American Pickle lacks the focus to be hilarious or emotional. Instead, it’s a frustrating, ramshackle affair. Matt Goldberg, ColliderDoes it hold particular appeal if you re Jewish? An American Pickle is most certainly the type of film that will appeal more so to Jewish viewers than a broad comedy audience. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesThe humor is for the most part genuinely funny, and even doubly funny if you share in the Jewish references. Gabriella Geisinger, Digital Spy(Photo by HBO Max)Is this a more sentimental affair? There’s a lot of heart behind the picture’s sentiments about familial honor, work ethic and religious heritage. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionAn American Pickle uses arguably the dumbest concept imaginable to tell a surprisingly tender story. Brandon Katz, ObserverThere’s an undeniable and lovely sweetness at play in this film; a type of warmth and acceptance that helps elevate the entire package. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmAn American Pickle is swift and nimble enough to avoid weighing itself down with schmaltz. A.O. Scott, New York TimesIts soulful sweetness outweighs its flaws. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterAn American Pickle premieres on HBO Max on Thursday, August 6.

Ready for another great Marvel movie? Of course, you are! The Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t had a Rotten entry in all its 13 years and 24 feature films, and the latest looks to continue the franchise’s tradition. From the Hollywood premiere of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a handful of critics shared unanimous praise on social media for the story, action, performances, and more. Even some of the usually harsher reviewers were pleasantly surprised. Here’s what critics are saying about Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings:Has Marvel done it again?Shang-Chi is fantastic… Marvel has another hit on its hands.  Kirsten Acuna, InsiderShang-Chi is awesome… Bravo!  Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comShang-Chi is an absolute triumph… Astounding.  Drew Taylor, ColliderPHENOMENAL. Get hyped.  Wendy Lee Szany, The Movie CoupleHow does it compare to other movies in the MCU?Shang-Chi is one of the best MCU films ever!!!! John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorShang-Chi is like no Marvel movie you’ve seen. Steve Weintraub, ColliderI liked Shang-Chi more than Black Widow. I said it. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderThis movie hits all that Marvel does well (pacing, humor, character) and adds action like we’ve never seen from the MCU before! Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comIn many ways it feels like the least MCU movie of the MCU, and I think a lot of people will really love that. It’s a great standalone adventure/origin story. Peter Sciretta, Slashfilm(Photo by Jasin Boland/©Marvel Studios)Does it give us further hope for the franchise? It is exactly the shot in the arm that Marvel and Disney needed. Scott Mendelson, ForbesThis is the MCU back doing its thing on a high level again. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentDirector Destin Daniel Cretton brought something so fresh to the MCU. So much style and heart. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comLove that it opens the door to a new world that I can’t wait to see more of. Steve Weintraub, ColliderI’m excited to see how Shang-Chi fits into the future of this cinematic universe. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmPhase 4 is magical and mystical and I m here for it. If Shang-Chi is the direction the next phase of the MCU is heading, bring on Eternals and Doctor Strange 2. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderSo Shang-Chi is even better than it looks?Never expected it to be THIS good… Can’t believe how much I loved this movie. John Campea, The John Campea ShowDidn’t expect to love it as much as I did! Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorWe are all pleasantly surprised. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentEven I really liked it… I was so damn relieved. Scott Mendelson, Forbes(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)What if the trailer didn t wow us?Shang-Chi is a blast! Marvel delivers a wuxia/fantasy/superhero movie mash-up that’s a lot more fun than how the trailers have been selling it. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentI thought the trailers looked awful. This film delivers the goods. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentIt s much better than the trailers (lots of goodies unspoiled) and is unafraid to be weird and fantastical. Scott Mendelson, ForbesWished the trailers didn t give away two surprises in the film… but there s so much in the film that isn t in the Shang-Chi trailers that surprised me. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderHow is the action? Some of the very best action in the MCU. Drew Taylor, ColliderShang-Chi has some of the best fight scenes of any MCU movie, sometimes thrilling, other times just stunningly beautiful. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmThe action set pieces are STUNNERS. Choreography, cinematography, costume design, VFX all on point and come together to make those fights MCU standouts. Perri Nemiroff, ColliderThe action is just absurdly epic. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comThe action scenes are simply spectacular, especially the train and skyscraper scene. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentThe filmmakers know how to capture the fight choreography with long takes and quick action. (No shaky cam!). John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorEvery fight scene/action sequence is better than the last. Wendy Lee Szany, The Movie Couple(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Will hardcore martial arts fans be impressed? The fighting is another level. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorBest martial arts I’ve seen in a long time. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentIt s full of INCREDIBLE, beautifully choreographed fight scenes and full of badass women. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderFight scenes are excellent and easy to follow. Steve Weintraub, ColliderAlmost as good [as The Raid] but can t beat an R rated film that has a hardcore stunt crew. With that said, this blows [away] any fight scenes in any MCU movie. John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorHow is the story?Unexpectedly spiritual and emotionally complex. Drew Taylor, ColliderCome for the killer fight scenes, dark mysticism, and martial arts mayhem, but stay for the thoughtful rumination on family, grief, and legacy. Dan Casey, NerdistThe family story is touching. John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorExpected a simple father/son conflict narrative and it s so much bigger than that. Shang-Chi is a beautiful story about family, loss, and how our grief can blind and destroy us. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderShang-Chi is such a personal, family story at its core. That’s when it’s at its best. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comShang-Chi is part Shakespearean family tragedy, part mythological epic, part martial arts masterpiece. It is f***ing awesome. John Campea, The John Campea ShowRyan FujitaniHow is Simu Liu in the lead?Simu Liu fully embraces the marvel superhero role. Wendy Lee Szany, The Movie CoupleSimu Liu literally kicks so much ass and he is perfectly cast. Steve Weintraub, ColliderSimu Liu is a legend. He nails the action sequences, brings the heart. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comGet ready to know Simu Liu s name if you don t already. Kirsten Acuna, InsiderDoes he make a great team with Awkwafina?Simu Liu and Awkwafina are a fantastic pairing. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmSimu Liu and Awkwafina are a great duo on the screen. John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorSimu Liu and Awkwafina are terrific. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentSimu Liu has great timing with Awkwafina. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comShang and Katy are instant MCU all stars. Aaron Couch, Hollywood ReporterWhat a hugely charming duo I absolutely must see more of. Perri Nemiroff, ColliderAre there any other standouts in the cast?Tony Leung rules, of course. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentTony Leung is perfect as The Mandarin. John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorThe whole cast is terrific! Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh are international treasures. Dan Casey, NerdistRyan FujitaniDoes Shang-Chi honor Asian representation and culture? To see so many Asian actors in an MCU movie made me feel so proud and happy. #RepresentationMatters. Wendy Lee Szany, The Movie CoupleThe movie’s myriad influences (everything from Jackie Chan to Hayao Miyazaki) pay off big time. Drew Taylor, ColliderAre there any problems? All I can say negative about the movie as a whole is that the second half isn’t as good as the first half but it’s still solid. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentThe third act is full of surprises but sometimes is a little crazier than is needed. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comShould we stick around for any post-credits scenes? The post credits are funny and exciting and sets up the future of the MCU. John Nguyen, Nerd ReactorThe first after-the-credits scene is a great one. Steve Weintraub, ColliderThe Shang-Chi crowd was the most enthusiastic I have been with since Endgame. Couldn’t hear some of the post credit scene dialogue due to cheering. Aaron Couch, Hollywood Reporter(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Will we want to see it again?I can’t wait to see this film again. Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorCan’t wait to watch again! Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comCan t stop thinking about how much I already want to watch Shang-Chi again. Wendy Lee Szany, The Movie CoupleWhen people ask me what I thought of a movie I always ask myself would I see the film again tomorrow. I would definitely watch Shang-Chi again tomorrow. 亚博官方网 Gerard Butler’s Has Fallen series is still bringing the action crowds: Angel Has Fallen s .25 million debut is a virtual dead match for previous entry London s .6 million opening. But with Angel the most expensive film in the franchise yet, financiers are also going to be hoping for some hefty international bucks.King of the Crop: I’ve Fallen, But Can Still Get Up To #1(Photo by Simon Varsano / © Lionsgate / courtesy Everett Collection)Angel Has Fallen has gotten into the positive side of Butler’s box office history with a .25 million start, but will it have enough in the tank to recoup its million budget? Olympus Has Fallen was the highest-grossing domestically of the series with .92 million. But it only grossed .34 million overseas resulting in the million production coming up in the red. London Has Fallen dipped at home with just .5 million, but more than doubled the international haul of the first film with 3.23 million. Hence, the green light for Angel. With 39% on the Tomatometer, the movie ranks somewhere in the middle critically for Butler. Compare it to previous entries: 49% and 26%, respectively. This for an actor who has never top-lined a film registering higher than 60%, achieved by RocknRolla and 300 both. With March openings, the Fallen films grossed multiples of 3.25 and 2.88 over their opening weekends. August box office history suggests that should decrease even more, marking Angel for somewhere around a million domestic total, leaving international the duty of making up the rest to the tune of 2 million to match London. Top 10 and Beyond: A Mild Time At The Movies(Photo by Eric Zachanowich/ TM & copyright © Fox Searchlight Pictures)Last week’s top film, Good Boys, which many were expecting to repeat, dropped 45% to .7 million. That puts it at .05 million after 10 days, which puts it about right in line with a more kid-appropriate August release in David Lowery’s remake of Disney’s Pete’s Dragon, which finished with over million. Universal’s primary cash cow, the Fast Furious series, may be showing signs of wear and tear in the U.S., but Hobbs Shaw just opened in China to the tune of 0 million this weekend. That brings its global total to over 8 million – the 8th highest of 2019. Its 7 million at home is still one of the lower bars of the series.Fox Searchlight’s Ready or Not had a lot of support from critics this week (Certified Fresh at 87% on Tomatometer) and many were hoping it would have opened stronger than it did: .55 million over the weekend and .57 million since its debut on Wednesday. That gives Ready a first final estimate between million and million. Not terrible for the million-budgeted film, but additional advertising costs may keep it in the red if word-of-mouth cannot boost its total further.Sony is not just feeling the brunt of anger from Marvel fans this week, but the belated realization that animated films and August do not mix. The latest example is The Angry Birds Movie 2, which is now up to just .09 million after 13 days. The film is currently 7 million behind the global gross of the first film, which in scale is on par with The Secret Life of Pets 2 doing 0 million less than its predecessor. Disney’s The Lion King, on the other hand, is now the 14th film ever to cross the half-billion line domestically and the 9th film to pass .508 billion globally. It needs just over million dollars outside the U.S. to become just the 9th film in history to surpass the billion mark exclusively with international dollars.Rounding out the top 10, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood is now over 2 million and has surpassed Inglourious Basterds to become his second highest-grossing film, behind Django Unchained. Along with Jordan Peele’s Us, it is one of only two 2019 original projects to break 0 million. Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark joined the million club this weekend. Dora and the Lost City of Gold is headed to join that club too, but not much beyond that.We continue to monitor films from the festival circuit as this week Roadside’s The Peanut Butter Falcon, which debuted at SXSW this year, expanded in its third weekend from 49 to 991 theaters and grossed million for a total of .7 million. Last week’s 90%-Tomatometer opener from Sundance, Blinded by the Light, dropped 52% for a .1 million second week haul, bringing its total to .2 million. Neon continued to expand its 93%-approved drama, Luce, into another 102 theaters (for a total of 160), bringing its total to 4,182. Finally there is A24’s The Farewell, which lost a small handful of screens this weekend and grossed another 4,000, bringing its total to .47 million. This Time Last Year: Asians Continues Crazy Rich Domination(Photo by Sanja Bucko/Warner Bros.)Crazy Rich Asians won handily for a second straight week, dropping just 6.4% from the previous weekend and earning another .8 million. The Meg maintained its second place status with .8 million. The best of the new challengers was Melissa McCarthy and the puppets in The Happytime Murders, which opened to .5 million, which is million more than McCarthy’s ensemble film The Kitchen grossed this month. The mechanical dog film, A.X.L., opened to just .79 million. And among limited releases, the remake of Papillon made .09 million in 544 theaters, but Sundance success Searching (Certified Fresh at 92%) would turn out to be the one to keep an eye on after 8,769 in just 9 theaters. The top ten films grossed .55 million and averaged 56.3% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top 10 grossed an estimated .60 Million and averaged 68.5%.On the Vine: Don’t Let Go and Saaho To Open Over Lackluster Holiday Weekend(Photo by Blumhouse)We hit the calm before the storm that will be It: Chapter Two on September 6. But for Labor Day weekend, Hollywood is going old-school in releasing, well, not much. Don’t Let Go, which premiered under the title Relive at Sundance in January, follows David Oyelowo s character on a Frequency-like murder mystery that did not impress the press at the festival this year. It currently stands at 47% on the Tomatometer. The lackluster numbers could then indeed open the door for Bollywood action thriller, Saaho, to find a spot in the top 10 as no film is likely to dominate over the holiday weekend. The Full Top 10: August 23-25Angel Has Fallen (2019) 39% – .25 million (.25 million total)Good Boys (2019) 80% – .75 million (.05 million total)Overcomer (2019) 56% – .20 million (.20 million total)The Lion King (2019) 52% –  .15 million (0.63 million total)Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) 67% .14 million (7.70 million total)Ready or Not (2019) 88% .55 million (.57 million total)The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019) 73% – .36 million (.09 million total)Scary Stories (2018) 83% – .00 million (.48 million total)Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019) 85% – .20 million (.09 million total)Once Upon a Time...
