神魔大陆血魔加点采用百度引擎2(Baidu 2)(Photo by Carole Bethuel)There has never been (and there will likely never be) a Cannes Film Festival like the one that just wrapped. Being the first major festival to conduct an in-person fest since the pandemic pause in 2020 meant all eyes were on the red carpet of the French Rivera; the Venice Film Festival had a scaled-down affair in late 2020, but it paled in comparison to what we saw on the Croisette. From the COVID-19 protocol restrictions and those same restrictions being ignored to the record low attendance, everything combined to give us the most stress-free year in recent memory. Those lucky enough to make their way to Cannes found tickets easily available and screenings just half full. Most of the galas – which previously were so packed that even people with tickets were turned away – frequently did not have enough attendees to open the balcony of the Grand Lumiere Theater.Still, despite all the changes, the 74th Cannes Film Festival was as it has always been, filled with exceptional characters, jaw-dropping camera work, astounding debuts, equally astounding disappointments, a little controversy, and best of all, the most impressive and avant-garde films in world cinema.Trying to pull a theme from this year s fest would be a difficult affair, given the varied selection. Still, we could easily discern that the festival programmers crafted a program tailored to an audience that has been trapped at home under economic uncertainty and grappling with the mental and physical wounds of 18 months spent battling COVID-19. This year we had narrative tales that mirrored what we have seen in our home communities: broken people looking for belonging, tales of isolation and regret, stories that articulate the yearning for family, and a longing for love – or, more precisely, lust. Nostalgic needle drops and narcissistic men may be the only things that rivaled the amount of sex we saw on screen the past few days.To put it plainly, this might have been the horniest lineup ever to grace the French festival. Red Rocket, Bergman Island, A Tale of Love and Desire, and Mothering Sunday all centered on sexed-up love stories. At the same time, films like Annette, Benedetta, and Palme d Or winner Titane all featured sex scenes that will have audiences talking through awards season. But sprinkled among these amorous offerings were a handful of entries that will be significant players in the 21- 22 awards season. Who knows? Julia Ducournau made history when she became just the second female director to win the top prize at Cannes; perhaps she could also capture audiences like Bong Joon-ho s Palme d Or and Best Picture winner Parasite did in 2019. We will just have to wait and see. In the meantime, read on for our picks for the six best films we saw at the Cannes Film Festival.

Fresh off their expected Best International Feature nomination and the unexpected but well-deserved Best Director nomination for director Thomas Vinterberg at the Academy Awards, Another Round is back on our list this week as our spotlight pick. We re offering a subtle reminder for those who have yet to watch the dark comedy that will leave you smiling drunkenly through your tears. Mads Mikkelsen turns in a hilarious and tragic performance in what Lewis Knight of the Daily Mirror calls “a riotous and thoughtful study of alcohol consumption that balances comedy and character study, anchored by a versatile lead performance from a top-form Mads Mikkelsen.” We recently sat down with Vinterberg to talk about the film, the drunken boot camp they held, and the incredible dancing scene.Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Mads is just incredible in the film. Can you talk about casting him and how he signed on?Thomas Vinterberg: Mads and I first talked about the idea in 2013. Back then, it was intended to be a tribute to alcohol, but the story wasn’t really formed yet. Mads was intrigued. He was a part of this film from the beginning. In fact, I had those four actors in mind since the early stages of writing. I tend to like that way of working, where I write my scripts for specific actors. It has become a bit more difficult because they’ve gotten rich and more famous, and now want to read a script before they attach. But in this case, actually, Mads and the three others all attached very early in the process, without a script. Their characters were called their respective names right up until the shooting draft. How do you direct people to be drunk? Is there an audition process? Do you need to know about their drinking history prior to signing on?Vinterberg: These four actors are all friends of mine. I’ve known them for years, and we’ve had drinks on various occasions. It’s really difficult for actors to play drunk and do it convincingly, especially capturing the nuanced changes in manner and physicality that accompanies their characters’ escalating inebriation over the course of the film. Prior to the shoot, we watched a lot of YouTube videos of drunk people, and we did some alcohol rehearsals, like a booze boot camp, or whatever you want to call it, in order to figure out the specific behavior of these specific actors at these specific levels of intake. We filmed it, and we had fun with it, but it was also a lot of hard work. As in most cases, where you see something that works naturally on-screen, it’s a result of a lot of hard work. How do you calibrate that? Did they have a BAC number on the call sheet?Vinterberg: No BAC on the call sheet, but a pretty specific idea about how to move forward with each level of inebriation. Once we had the boot camp and had a feel of the different levels and their corresponding actions, we knew where we were heading. We also improvised a bit, of course, in order for it to feel more believable, because sometimes the realistic levels would seem too low for their onscreen behavior.Let s talk about Mads drunkenly dancing on the pier. How did you do it?Vinterberg: Knowing that Mads was a dancer, and knowing that I was making a movie about inspiration and ecstasy and breaking free of your normal, repetitious patterns, I felt it was kind of called for, that he should be dancing at the end. Though, we were all very cautious about it. Particularly Tobias Lindholm and Mads were afraid it would become cliché. We had a dance choreographer for the dance moves, but I, together with Mads, choreographed the to-ing and fro-ing to make it look real. It needed to look like a slice of life. Which is also why the dance is not pitch-perfect. After some hesitation, towards the very end, he lets go entirely. Everyone was so great in that moment. And Mads, of course, in particular, is absolutely outstanding, dancing alone, with no dance-doubles or anything. And yet still behind this cathartic weightless moment, there is this shadow, a sense of this deep tragedy. The film has global appeal. Is that because alcohol (which is thought of differently around the world) is a catalyst, not the crux?Vinterberg: You are right. The film is supposed to be about more than just drinking, of course. Spirit means more than alcohol and is embedded in the “inspiration” too. My wife, who is

3. 激战团竞模式
TV news didn t rest over the weekend — instead, DC Universe, AMC, History, BBC America, and more network shared news with reporters at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Los Angeles on Saturday and Sunday. Read on to find out new intel on Killing Eve, Knightfall, Doom Patrol, and more.TOP STORYHow Doom Patrol Sets a New Tone for DC TVThere’s plenty of source material available for the showrunners of Doom Patrol, DC Universe’s second live-action series, to choose from when breaking stories. Showrunner Jeremy Carver said the series dips into several different versions of the characters in the series.“A great jumping off point is the Grant Morrison run in the ’90s,” Carver told reporters at a Television Critics Association winter press tour panel in Los Angeles over the weekend. “We dip into the Silver Age where we are seeing the Celsius and Lodestone characters. We’re going to see some other characters that have graced over the years, such as Danny the Street. We’re going to see one of my more beloved characters, the Beard Hunter.”While most of DC’s television properties live on the CW, land of the perma-shirtless, sexy twentysomethings, this cast includes decidedly non-twentysomethings Brendan Fraser, Timothy Dalton, and Alan Tudyk. But fans of DC’s CW series will not be put off by the age-diverse cast of Doom Patrol, which premieres Feb. 15.“I think DC has made a decision, quite smartly, to separate the feature world and the television world,” executive producer Sarah Schechter explained. “I don’t think there’s been any confusion, and comic books have always had multiple versions of the same character, created by different writers, different artists, with different adventures. I think it’s really fun, I think that the two work really nicely together, and help fans to experience fully the characters that they love.”What Do Killing Eve and Harry Potter Have in Common (Besides Fiona Shaw)?(Photo by Aimee Spinks/BBC America)New Killing Eve showrunner Emerald Fennell took over for the Emmy-winning series’ second season from creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge (who focused on the second season of her Amazon series, Fleabag, instead). But star Sandra Oh told reporters at the show’s TCA panel that the transition between the two was seamless.“Emerald and Phoebe are friends and had been friends for a long time,” Oh said. “I feel like they have a kinship — the sensibility, where they come from, their humor, their style. And Emerald has her own voice entirely, but it really moves from one hand to a similar hand.”When the series comes back to BBC America on April 7, it’ll pick up approximately 30 seconds after the events of the season 1 finale, and Eve (Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) will be at odds once again. The duo said that their characters’ relationship will definitely evolve in season 2.“I think what is most interesting about Eve’s stabbing Villanelle at the end of series 1 is Villanelle’s reaction to that, and just how emotionally she perceives that. And I think it both affects them and changes them in a way neither of them are quite expecting,” Comer said.(Photo by Aimee Spinks/BBC America)Added Oh, “And I think you see them vulnerable in slightly different ways. They’ve crossed the line and there’s no going back. I think we have a lot of energy at the beginning of the series, and that pushes both of them into a different place of vulnerability.”The characters are inextricably linked to one another, much like two other famous literary characters from the past 20 years — Harry Potter and He Who Must Not Be Named, of course, where neither can live while the other survives.“I kind of like the Harry Potter theory,” Comer said.Joked Fennell, “So Villanelle’s a Horcrux.”In all seriousness, though, the characters’ true relationship is still being explored.“It’s something that we’re also still figuring out and finding the pieces to as we play out scenes on set, which is actually really exciting, Comer said. I actually really like the fact that we can’t put our finger on it.”New Knightfall Star Mark Hamill on the Ties Between the Knights Templar and Star Wars’ JediThe Star Wars film saga s Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill, joins the second season of History’s Knightfall as Talus, a tough, wise, hardened, and devout master who trains new members of the Knights Templar and who spent 10 years being tortured as a POW during a Crusade. Hamill told reporters at a TCA panel for the show that he never intended taking on a project like Knightfall, but was hooked after watching a few episodes.“I just thought, ‘I’ve never been offered anything like this before.’ I mean, I’d never done a character quite like this before — a religious zealot, a man of deep convictions, and, yet, such a paradox, Hamill said. He’s lecturing the troops and he says, ‘Once you become a Templar knight you shall become God’s executioners.’ How could there be such a thing? I thought, ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ But that’s the thing, I was flattered that they would think of me in such a diverse character part, and I thought, ‘Oh, I have to do this. I really do have to do this,’ to be part of a largely British cast and in a period drama like this, which I’d never done before. That’s what I look for: challenges to try not to repeat yourself, and this was certainly a challenge.”It’s no secret that the Knights Templar inspired another secret order Hamill has been a part of (Star Wars’ Jedi, duh). But the ties between the two actually didn’t occur to him until he’d already said yes.“I didn’t really think it through, but the truth of the matter is that I’m sure George Lucas came from so many different inspirations of his own, both from the movies and literature, Hamill said. He was probably thinking more of King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable, because it was more idealized and glamorous, certainly, than the Templar Knights, but there’s no question that his inspiration was rooted, partially, in this mythology.”Pennyworth Creators Explain Why Batman’s Butler Needs an Origin Series(Photo by Epix)Fox’s Batman prequel series, Gotham, is coming to an end this year. But more pre-Batman stories will continue to be told on television in Epix’s Pennyworth, an origin story about the early life of Batman’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth (played by Jack Bannon).“It’s really the chance to make him the center of a story and explain that journey: How did he get from being a young SAS soldier to being a butler in America? And it also gives us a chance to create a real world around him, a world in England that fits the whole DC universe,” executive producer Bruno Heller said. “It’s surprising to all of us the depth and range that you can go to with this character.”While the character’s creator, Bob Kane, set the 1930s as Alfred’s origin, but the Epix series is set in the 1960s. Executive producer Danny Cannon said that as someone from London, that seemed like the most dynamic time period to set a show.“It’s after the war, before things change for good. You could see the change in the air. Things were happening, culturally, artistically, that — it was an inspiring time, I think, that English people always revisit,” Cannon said. “So, to say that that was the foundations of which we were starting with and then making it 13 degrees more DC, 13 degrees darker [is when the series] really came alive for us.”The Story Behind NOS4A2’s Title(Photo by Zach Dilgard/AMC)The people involved in AMC’s new supernatural horror series NOS4A2 know that the title (pronounced like “Nosferatu”) is a little bit out of the ordinary. But the series, which stars Zachary Quinto as a vampire of sorts who feeds on the souls of children, is based on the book of the same name by Joe Hill (who happens to be the son of Stephen King), and series creator Jami O’Brien said the cast and producers are going to do their best to educate the audience about it.“One of the wonderful things about the book is that there are a lot of word games in it. One of the characters is a Scrabble master and librarian. And I think that the title itself, you know, Manx [played by Quinto] talks about it deeper in the book than where we get in the first season, but it’s a joke. And it’s also a puzzle,” O’Brien said. “And I think both of those things speak to the humor of the book and the humor of the character and is kind of a fun twist on the vampire genre, you know? Charlie Manx is a kind of vampire, but he’s not any kind of vampire that we’ve seen before. He doesn’t suck blood. He sucks souls. So, I think it’s a little irreverent, and I think — I’m glad that we have it because I think it’s a lot of fun.”

(Photo by © Altered Innocence / Courtesy: Everett Collection)30 Essential LGBTQ+ Horror MoviesAs long as there have been horror films, there have been queer horror films. Before homosexuality was formally legislated out of existence in Hollywood by the Production Code — commonly referred to as the Hays Code, which established mandates for “moral standards” in motion pictures and banned depictions of “sexual perversity” — the legendary filmmaker James Whale was building the foundation for American genre cinema with films like Frankenstein, The Old Dark House, and The Invisible Man. Here was Whale, a gay man, building horror in his own image and having astounding box office success as some groups were lobbying Hollywood to censor queerness out of existence. Fortunately, they weren’t creative enough to drive the big bad Other away.In the century since America became the world’s leader in horror film production, the genre became a bastion for the outsiders, the marginalized, the people made monsters by self-appointed adjudicators of sin, and who saw themselves in the supposed “villains” at the center of stories like Dracula’s Daughter. On rare occasion, queer folks were given real protagonists to root for, like Theo in The Haunting, but it wasn’t until the Hays Code was abandoned in the late 1960s that sexuality outside the bounds of heteronormativity became more overt. (Not to say it was all positive representation, but the lesbian vampire wave of the 1970s certainly signified that the puritans were losing the culture wars in genre.) The Moral Majority reign of the Reagan Era slammed up against the AIDS crisis, and the excess and tumult of the 80s gave rise to ultra-stylish and sexualized gore in movies like The Hunger and Hellraiser. The indie cinema boom at the turn of turn of the millennium coincided with the emergence of New Queer Cinema, and eccentric coming-of-age darlings like May and Ginger Snaps provided an alternative to the glossy studio slashers of the time. Now in 2020, we can choose from a lesbian domestic drama involving a baby werewolf in Good Manners, a transfeminist vampire movie in Bit, or a French slasher set in a gay porn community with Knife + Heart. The monsters are out of the closet, and they’re never going back in. Here are our 30 essential LGBTQ+ horror movies, in order of release. – Jordan Crucchiola

Given this weekend s overall box office bust, domestic audiences appear like they may be saving some of the money for the eventual spend in a couple weeks when Toy Story 4 opens. That film’s pre-sales are already expected to boost its opening weekend into the biggest animated opening of all-time. Because it sure did not happen this week.KING OF THE CROP: Pets Sequel Starts Soft (Photo by Universal Pictures)Just a few weeks ago tracking services had The Secret Life of Pets 2 at million. That was still low for an Illumination summer release, but notably much lower than the first film’s 4.3 million start in July 2016. As with Godzilla: King of the Monsters last week, that initial number proved to be way off: The film opened with just million. That is less than Despicable Me started with nearly a full decade ago (.3 million). Call this more a disappointment than any kind of outright disaster for the animation studio. They keep their productions relatively cheap ( million in this case.) Critics have been disappointed by six of their 10 features , including this one, which currently stands at 53% on the Tomatometer, with only Despicable Me getting above 80%. By comparison, Pixar has only had a single film receive a Rotten score (Cars 2 with 38%) and had 14 of their 20 films score over 90% on the Tomatometer. But Illumination’s films still make money. Seven of the studio’s films have made over a half-billion globally at the box office and two of them (Minions, Despicable Me 3) grossed over a billion. Illumination has not had a film gross less than 0 million domestically since 2012’s The Lorax, however.Only three animated films have ever opened to less than million and gone on to gross that much, and they were The Lion King, Shrek and, well, Illumination’s Sing. It grossed .5 million from Wednesday to Friday and .2 million over Friday to Monday during the 2016 holiday season and just grew and grew albeit with no direct animated competition until its eighth week when The Lego Batman Movie opened.Pets 2 is not going to have that luxury. As mentioned, Toy Story 4 is opening in just two weeks and the first-day pre-sales on May 28 outsold Incredibles 2. The first Pets movie opened three weeks after Finding Dory had already grossed 0 million. Toy Story 4 could gross half of that in its first three days, and Pets 2 could end up looking at a relatively soft domestic number even if its international numbers ( million to date) will no doubt turn it into another solid success for Illumination.Rotten Returns: Dark Phoenix Hits All New Lows for X-Men Franchise(Photo by 20th Century Fox)The X-Men films have not exactly been financial juggernauts. Logan and X-Men; Days of Future Past did very well as did both of the Deadpool films. X-Men: Apocalypse did cross the half-billion mark but barely squeaked out a profit for the studio. The rest of the films failed to cross that line and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men: First Class, and X-Men: The Last Stand did not even get out of the red while still in theaters. Now, in what is hardly a surprise, Dark Phoenix is setting new lows all around in what appears to be one last gasp before the heroes are repackaged under Disney’s version of Marvel.Starting with the critical response, Dark Phoenix now replaces X-Men Origins: Wolverine (37%) as the worst-scored of the franchise with a 22%. Six of the 11 films (not counting Once Upon a Deadpool) have scored 80% or higher. The Wolverine used to be the low-water mark for the franchise opening with .1 million, but Dark Phoenix scraped up just million this weekend. It is also the only film in the series to have a per-theater-average less than ,000 with an estimated ,869. Phoenix may have started with a reasonable million in Thursday previews, but among films to open on Thursdays between million– million, only Blade Runner 2049 had a lower opening with .7 million. When the final numbers come out Monday, Dark Phoenix may own that distinction. Thanks to extensive reshoots the film’s budget ballooned to 0 million. Days of Future Past survived that number, when it became the highest-grossing non-Deadpool film in the group. Brett Ratner’s The Last Stand failed with a 0-million budget despite still being the highest-grossing domestic entry with X-Men in the title. The last five films (including Logan and the Deadpools) have grossed between 9 million–3 million overseas. Dark Phoenix has made 7 million internationally so far. Seventeen of the 37 films to open between million– million failed to reach 0 million, and Dark Phoenix is likely to be joining that list possibly with million less than what The Wolverine (2.5 million) finished with.Top Ten And Beyond: Aladdin, Godzilla, Rocketman, and Ma(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Warner Bros.’ Godzilla: King of the Monsters could just as easily have been placed in the Rotten Returns section. After the diminishing returns last weekend that ended up with just a .7 million weekend (a little more than half of 2014’s Godzilla million opening), the film dropped 67.5% in weekend two to .5 million. Let’s put that in perspective: First, a film with million or more after 10 days has never failed to reach 0 million, though there are a couple (Fifty Shades Freed, The Cat in the Hat) which came within a couple million of doing so. There is only one film that grossed over million in its opening weekend and then dropped under million the next: The Fault in Our Stars, which opened to million and fell to .7 million. That film still managed to gross 4.8 million, but Godzilla is already behind its pace by million and that is likely to fall off further. The film is up to 2 million globally and 5 million looks to be the magic number it needs to get into the black.Last week’s other releases did not drop quite as bad. Ma did fall 56.8%, which puts it just above Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare (.7 vs. .2 million after 10 days) and ahead in its second weekend gross by ,575 if the estimates hold. That film finished with just .4 million. Elton John musical biopic Rocketman fell 45.6% to million, which puts its final estimate somewhere between million– million domestic. It has grossed 1 million worldwide to date.Pokemon Detective Pikachu has passed 0 million globally, but still needs around another million in order to claim success. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, at half the cost, has made over 2 million worldwide and is in the win column for Lionsgate. The Keanu Reeves action spectacular is actually right in line with what the first Mission: Impossible had made after 24 days (8.7 million), and it is only .2 million behind what it made in weekend four (.6 million.) That is giving it a final estimate somewhere between 5 million–5 million domestically; enough to pass La La Land for the sixth highest-grossing domestic film in Lionsgate history.Amazon this weekend opened the first of their big Sundance acquisitions this weekend. Late Night (81%) opened in four theaters and grossed 9,654 for a ,414 per-theater-average. That is the best four-theater opening of 2019 so far, besting Sundance surprise screening Fighting With My Family, which made 8,780 before it went wide, as Late Night will be doing next week. That number is better than similar Amazon openings such as Beautiful Boy (8,888) and Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot (,339). In 2018, the top four theater openings were The Favourite (2,410), Free Solo (8,288), Eighth Grade (3,797), and Mid90s (8,157). Along with Eighth Grade, some other top Sundance PTAs over the years include The Kids Are All Right (,282) and The Big Sick (,315).Disney has the two biggest successes in the Top 10: Aladdin, which passed 0 million worldwide this weekend and now has a legitimate shot at reaching 0 million domestic, and Avengers: Endgame, which, at .730 billion, is roughly million away from passing Avatar and breaking the all-time record. Next week will be its eighth and likely final week in the Top 10. Avatar spent 14 weeks in the Top 10; seven of those in the No. 1 slot back in 2009.This Time Last Year: New Ocean Crew Stole Record Amount Opening WeekendSandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Co. took the top spot with Ocean’s 8 grossing .6 million, higher than any of Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s films and ultimately outgrossing both of the sequels. Ari Aster’s Sundance horror sensation, Hereditary, opened in fourth with .5 million behind Solo: A Star Wars Story and Deadpool 2. Global Road (formerly Open Road’s) Hotel Artemis proved to be a bust with just .2 million, while Avengers: Infinity War passed the 0 million line. The Top 10 films grossed 9.66 million and averaged 70.2% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 grossed an estimated 8.72 million and averaged 66.5% on the Tomatometer. On the Vine: Reboots Hope To Grab Box Office ScrapsA pair of reboots hope to take a small piece of the box office next weekend led by Men In Black International. A new cast, led by MCU buddies Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth and guided by F. Gary Gray, suit up to fight new aliens. There is also a sequel to the 2000 remake of the 1971 original Shaft with Samuel L. Jackson. It is also called Shaft. Son of Shaft may be more appropriate or maybe Shaft: First Blood Part II. But Jackson returns with director Tim Story taking over for the late John Singleton. Finally, Jim Jarmusch takes on the zombie genre with an all-star cast, including Bill Murray and Adam Driver, in The Dead Don’t Die. The film from the indie darling was met with some indifference from Cannes this year and currently sits at 50% on the Tomatometer. The Full Top 10: June 7-9The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019) 60% – .11 million (.03 million total)Dark Phoenix (2019) 22% – million (.00 million total)Aladdin (2019) 57% – .50 million (2.38 million total)Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) 42% – .54 million (.59 million total)Rocketman (2019) 89% – million (.49 million total)Ma (2019) 56% – .82 million (.76 million total)John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89% – .40 million (8.66 million total)Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – .80 million (4.36 million total)Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) 68% – .98 million (7.40 million total)Booksmart (2019) 96% – .57 million (.81 million total)
f the X-Men, including Storm, will be introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (The connection to Black Panther II is that in the comics, King T Challa eventually marries Storm.)7. HALLOWEEN KILLS AND THE FOREVER PURGE DELAYED UNTIL 2021(Photo by Ryan Green/©Universal Pictures)The reality of the COVID-19 pandemic and the continuing scheduling delays have made reporting on such release date shifts nearly a non-story each week, but this week, Universal Pictures pushed four of their highest profile horror films back all at once. The reboot of Candyman, which had originally been scheduled to come out last month on June 12th, is now scheduled instead for October 16, 2020. Two other sequels previously scheduled for 2020 have instead been pushed back to dates in 2021: The Forever Purge on July 9, 2021 (one day shy of a year after its original July 10, 2020 date) and Halloween Kills on October 15, 2021. Producer John Carpenter took to Twitter to release this Halloween Kills statement confirming that the 2021 plans include IMAX screens, and also to give us our first teaser trailer for Halloween Kills. This shift also pushes Halloween Ends, which was originally slated to release on the date now occupied by Kills, back another year to October 14, 2022. Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends are both sequels to the 2018 sequel/reboot Halloween (Certified Fresh at 79%), which returned Jamie Lee Curtis to the franchise.8. KRISTEN BELL AND LESLIE JONES TO BE COUNTERFEITING QUEENPINS (Photo by Priscilla Grant, Jason Mendez/Everett Collection)Hollywood remains in quite the transitional period as productions slowly attempt to resume activity during the pandemic. One feature film that is scheduled to start filming in Los Angeles in late 2020 is a caper comedy called Queenpins, inspired by the true story of the largest coupon counterfeit enterprise in U.S. history, led by three women who sold fake coupons that could then be turned in for items that were worth much more money. Queenpins will feature an ensemble cast, including Kristen Bell (Frozen, TV s The Good Place) and Saturday Night Live star Leslie Jones as two of the ringleaders, as well as Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers, The Break-Up) and Paul Water Hauser (I, Tonya, Richard Jewell). Queenpins will be written and directed by the married team of Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly, who made their feature film in 2013 with the independent film Beneath the Harvest Sky (Fresh at 62%), starring Game of Thrones  Aidan Gillen ( Littlefinger ).9. STAR WARS ALUMNI TEAMING UP FOR BORDERLAND INDIE THRILLER (Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)As recently as late May, one of the biggest casting news stories was that Cate Blanchett had signed on to star in the video game adaptation Borderlands, based on the popular first-person shooter franchise. Coincidentally (but possibly confusingly), we can also now report that an indie thriller called Borderland (singular versus the plural video game title) is now casting up with stars from a few popular recent films. These stars include John Boyega (Finn from Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker), Felicity Jones (Jyn Erso from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Jack Reynor (Florence Pugh s apathetic boyfriend in Midsommar), and Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen from last year s Queen Slim). Reynor will play an Irish soldier whose pregnant wife is killed by John Boyega s British SAS soldier during a border ambush. Borderland will be directed and written by brothers Tom and Charlie Guard (the latter of whom is also married to Felicity Jones), who made their feature film debut in 2009 with The Uninvited (Rotten at 31%), the poorly received American remake of the South Korean supernatural thriller A Tale of Two Sisters.
The CW’s Black Lightning has always been a world apart from its superhero cousins on the network. Originally developed as a show for Fox, it always took the concepts of superpowers and the DC Comics metahumans a metaphor for something much closer to our reality. Its inciting incident — the deployment of a vaccine said to prevent a virulent disease, but truly design to stimulate the metagenes in the population of Freeland — has its origins in things like the Tuskegee Study and the CIA’s alleged introduction of crack cocaine into the inner cities in the 1980s.In the world of Black Lightning, the meta-vaccine operation was conducted by a shadowy government agency known as the ASA, and their tactics have left a lasting mark on Freeland as a whole and central character Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) in particular. Even as the series sprawled out to tell the tales of Jefferson’s family, his arch-rival Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III), and Jefferson s mentor Peter Gambi (James Remar), it’s never lost sight of the ASA. In fact, it is possible they are Black Lightning’s ultimate adversaries. But at the moment, they also have Freeland in lockdown – an occupation officially meant to keep Freeland’s meta population safe from agents of a foreign power, Markovia, desperate to snatch up metas in a latter-day arms race. The story may echo the CIA’s activities during the later parts of the Cold War, but in illustrating the effects of an actual military occupation on U.S. soil, the show enters unprecedented ground. The stakes have never been higher. As Williams put it when Rotten Tomatoes visited the Atlanta soundstages where the show is produced, “It s much more than just corner boys and Tobias trying to just take over the city for his own power. In fact, we got the distinct impression Freeland’s old normal will never be restored. But, as Williams told us, “The ‘back to normal’ Freeland was never like this idealistic place It was always, you know, it was flawed. There was crime. It s why [Jefferson] had to originally put the suit back on in the first place.” Nonetheless, Williams felt it is important for the Occupation to end, even if “we get back to just that” because Freeland is ultimately part of the United States and rights are being trampled on in the current situation.Granted, the ASA Agent-in-Charge, Odell (Bill Duke), would disagree. When we spoke to Duke, he mentioned Odell firmly believes the Occupation is ultimately protecting Americans from a rogue nation. His methods, though, leave much to be desired. For instance, he kept both Jefferson and his wife, Dr. Lynn Stewart’s (Christine Adams) in a mandatory hold at a secret facility for months and once he had to let them go, he planted subliminal messages in Lynn s living space suggesting she experiment with Green Light, the power-enhancing drug taking the place for crack in the program’s ongoing storyline. When it was suggested manipulating Lynn was evil, Duke said, What really is evil?  It is a question the show is gearing up to address, but in the interim, Lynn is abusing Green Light.“You’re definitely going to see Lynn in a way you ve never seen her before,” Adams said of Lynn under the drug’s influence. Her first few attempts to synthesize a safe, non-addictive Green Light gave her increased brain efficiency and allowed her to find a cure for a Markovian virus meant to kill Freeland s meta population. But it’s also made her obsessive about her work and created another rift between her and Jefferson. Then again, the fragility of their marriage is another one of the show’s ongoing plots.“I think it definitely makes sense for their relationship to go like this,” Adams said. But she added the Occupation is putting a very specific stress on them. “They know too much. They ve seen too much. I mean, they would have to be PTSD if nothing else … like, put them all in therapy. That s what I would do.”Their time at The Pit, the ASA’s black site in Freeland, also put Black Lightning off his footing, but Williams suggested the change in outlook may ultimately be beneficial.“I think he s angrier, and I think he has the right to be,” he said. “Going from season 1, his school was successful, his daughters were safe, and then you progress to being locked up for over a month and then coming out to an occupation and nobody s safe. He s tried to do things the right way and play by the rules and sees the repercussions of that.”At the moment, an agreement with Odell means he cannot act against the ASA, but it is only a matter of time before he learns the full scope of the agent’s machinations and, perhaps, joins the Resistance. And then there’s Tobias. Though he is locked up in The Pit, Williams said that Jefferson’s feelings about Tobias haven t changed. The feeling is mutual. Though Jones was unwilling to suggest when or how Tobias might escape The Pit, he said Black Lightning is the only person who should worry if and when that prison break occurs.“I think it s always going to be Black Lightning,” he added, though he said another confrontation between Tobias and the unkillable Lala (William Catlett) is inevitable. “[They’re] almost like Kobe and Shaq, where they re on the same team, kind of, but then again they re not. You know? One has a way of doing things, and the other one doesn t. It s kind of like I need the other one to get out of the way so I can do my thing the way I do it. I think they ll always conflict and run into each other.”Jefferson and Lynn’s detention at The Pit also left their children Anissa (Nafessa Williams) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) to figure out life in the Occupation on their own. Anissa chose to formalize her alternate persona of Blackbird as a hero of the burgeoning Resistance — and establish an underground railroad of sorts for metas trying to escape Freeland — while Jennifer tried her best to be a “normal” teenager.According to Nafessa Williams, Blackbird and Anissa’s earlier hero persona of Thunder represent two sides of the character.“[Blackbird] doesn t have it all together and she doesn t always do the right thing the way Thunder does, but she does it her way because she thinks it s the right way and she thinks it s what Freeland needs right now.”The impulsiveness of Blackbird may cause problems down the line – particularly with the Perdi in South Freeland – but Williams sees the alter-ego as part of Anissa coming into her own.“She s really seeing herself as an adult and realizing that she runs her life,” Williams said. Nevertheless, expect some mistakes as Anissa finds her way to adulthood. But one aspect of Anissa’s life that will be on firmer ground during the Occupation is her relationship with shapeshifter Grace Choi (Chantal Thuy) – a romance teased since the early episodes of the show, but finally a real thing in season 3.“I think Anissa is really happy to have found someone who understands her,” Williams said of the relationship. “She hasn t told anyone really who she is other than her family, so to be able to open up and trust someone else and let them in on who she really is and understand them for who they are, I think it s a match.”And, as it happens, Grace has also proved her abilities will aid Anissa in getting out of tight scrapes, like Odell’s ill-timed visit in last week’s episode.Jennifer, meanwhile, has acclimated to curfews, traffic stops, and the ASA’s stated mission a little too well. Bizarrely, the confines of the Occupation gave Jennifer an added sense of independence – something Odell hopes to utilize for his own ends.“He s counting on being able to take her humanity and use it,” McClain said. The shadowy agent has already helped her discover new powers which may indicate she is stronger than her father. Also, “[Odell’s] telling her, ‘Your father s wrong here, your father s methods aren t working. You know what I m saying? They haven t worked for years.’”Those sorts of poisonous words could lead to a confrontation between Jennifer and Jefferson before too long.McClain also teased Lynn’s preoccupation with work at The Pit will beco

神魔大陆血魔加点 Curses and miracles aligned over this Easter weekend as Hollywood awaits the flood of moviegoers headed to theaters next week for the conclusion of the Avengers saga. First things first, though, as one superhero is not done yet — even if he would be wise to fly away from the screeching phantom that challenged him this weekend.King of the Crop: Curse Opens on Top, But May Come In for a Soft Landing(Photo by New Line Cinema)Warner Bros.’ Conjuring Universe film, The Curse of La Llorona, opened to a very respectable .5 million. Not terribly well received after its screening at the SXSW film festival this March, the studio then decided to forego press screenings altogether, and it is sitting on a 32% Tomatometer score. That’s the weakest rating for a wide release horror film since last November’s The Possession of Hannah Grace (20%). Even The Prodigy got a 45%. La Llorona’s opening is well ahead other April horror entries like 2008’s Prom Night (.8 million), Scream 4 (.69), and last year’s Truth or Dare (.66). Those three films finished between million–44 million. It is also ahead of this month’s Pet Sematary, which began with .5 million and currently sits at .5 million, just ahead of the pace of White Noise, which finished with .38 million; less than Mary Lambert’s 1989 Pet Sematary (.46 million). But a potential million finish domestically for La Llorona would be solid for the million production. It is already over million worldwide.Rotten Returns: Penguins March to the Bottom of DisneyNature(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)The DisneyNature films have done fairly well as far as documentaries go. Earth and Chimpanzee are the 6th and 7th highest-grossing docs of all-time, and Oceans, Bears, Monkey Kingdom, and African Cats are still all in the top 20. So they had to be hoping for better with the 90%-rated Penguins, given that March of the Penguins is the second-highest grossing documentary ever with .4 million. Disney’s film has managed just .2 million since opening on Wednesday. Even the weakest entry in the series, Born in China, made .6 million in its first five days. The Top 10 and Beyond: Captain Marvel Hits Milestone Just Before the Endgame(Photo by Marvel Studios)Shazam! dropped to second this weekend, but only with a 29% fall as it joins 15 films to make between 0 million–122 million in 17 days, seven of which are animated. Its .3 million third weekend is the fifth-best amongst them behind just Hitch, Wreck-It Ralph, Coco, and Happy Feet. Those four films grossed between 9 million–210 million, while the 11 films Shazam! beat grossed between 9 million–192 million. DC’s latest could be headed for somewhere in the 0 million range, That is clearly nothing compared to Captain Marvel, which appears to be getting the Black Panther treatment now, as fans want to make sure they are completely caught up for Endgame. It has reached the 0 million domestic mark, and at .098 million, it is the 25th highest-grossing film of all-time. Its 5.7% increase from last week to .1 million this weekend is the eighth-best seventh weekend ever.Another version of a superhero is on display in Breakthrough. Namely, The Almighty, as the power of prayer beats doctors in reviving a drowned boy. Over the weekend the 64%-rated film grossed .1 million, ranking it ahead of Soul Surfer and God’s Not Dead on the faith chart. That’s less than other pre-Easter releases like Heaven Is For Real (.5 million) and Miracles From Heaven (.8 million), each involving children, illness, and revival. Breakthrough has made .6 million since opening Wednesday.Dumbo finally hit 0 million on its 24th day and likely finishes somewhere between 0 million–120 million. That means a worldwide total somewhere in the 0 million range, which may be just enough to be the second-biggest bomb of 2019, leaving the top title to Paramount’s Wonder Park. Annapurna’s United Artists Releasing did no favors for Missing Link, which crash-landed on opening (despite a 90% critical rating). Audiences may have caught on to the critics singing its praises because the film dropped just 26% this weekend — the second smallest drop of the year after The Upside — but it has still only grossed .9 million.(Photo by @ Universal )Last week’s releases fell further down the chart. Little dropped 45 percent from second to fifth and has made million to date. Lionsgate’s Hellboy, though, is a domestic failure. It’s 67.8-percent drop is the third worst of 2019 for a wide release behind Replicas and The Beach Bum. Neil Marshall’s film has made less than Elektra did in its first 10 days; the 2005 film lost more than half its theaters in its third week. If that happens to Hellboy next week, then it may not even reach million. Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy made .1 million in its opening weekend. Finally, Jordan Peele’s Us looks to be preparing for one more Top 10 stay next weekend. Currently on par in weekend five with X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Thor, it may settle in with a final gross between 9 million–181 million; ahead of Get Out’s 6 million. This Time Last Year: Audiences Chose Quiet Over Rampage(Photo by @ Paramount Pictures)A Quiet Place reclaimed the top spot at the box office, edging out Rampage in its second weekend by less than 0,000. I Feel Pretty ( millon) also took third place by less than 0,000 over challenger Super Troopers 2, which made nearly half of its total money this weekend. The Paula Patton thriller, Traffik, opened all the way back in ninth with just .94 million. The top 10 films grossed 6.60 million and averaged 60% on the Tomatometer. This week’s top 10 grossed an estimated .65 million and averaged 61% with critics. On the Vine: Avengers: Endgame Looking to Bust Some Records(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)The summer movie season once again begins in April and no one wants to get in the way of Avengers: Endgame. Eleven years in the making. Who lives? Who dies? All questions the fans want answered, but Disney is looking at others. Will Endgame best Infinity War’s all-time opening weekend of 7.6 million? (Likely.) Could it actually climb to 0 million by the end of Sunday? (Quite possibly.) Does it best Black Panther’s 0 million to become the highest-grossing Marvel film ever? (Could be.) Are the numbers of Avatar and Star Wars in any danger? (We’ll see.) But we will track its progress week-to-week right here. The Full Top 10: April 19-21The Curse of La Llorona (2019) 28% – .50 million (.50 million total)Shazam! (2019) 90% – .34 million (1.34 million total)Breakthrough (2019) 63% – .10 million (.60 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .10 million (0.02 million total)Little (2019) 46% – .45 million (.38 million total)Dumbo (2019) 46% – .80 million (1.25 million total)Pet Sematary (2019) 57% – .85 million (.58 million total)Missing Link (2019) 88% – .36 million (.97 million total)Us (2019) 93% – .26 million (0.44 million total)Hellboy (2019) 18% – .88 million (.67 million total)

We know the first episode will revolve around Geralt and Ciri’s journey to the Witcher fortress. And from clips unveiled during the September Tudum event, it’s clear the pair will spend at least one night as Nivellen’s keep before they arrive at Kaer Morhen. On a more macro level, the Northern Kings will have either won the war against Nilfgaard or remained in a saber-rattling stance after witnessing the Battle of Sodden Hill from afar. Considering a second war with Nilfgaard breaks out in the narrative of the novels, we expect the television show may just turn the two conflicts into one – a war they can actually dramatize (budget permitting) as Ciri continues her training.(Photo by The Witcher season 2 - Netflix)Meanwhile, the trailer released at the end of WitcherCon seemingly resolved Yennefer’s disappearance. Nevertheless, her next move will no doubt inform the tensions outside Kaer Morhen. For one thing: the Brotherhood is still up for grabs, even if there is considerable support of Nilfgaard at this point. But Yennefer may not rejoin that conflict at first. She’s captured [and] she has to survive being a prison of war, Chalotra teased during the TCA event.Hissrich also added Yennefer’s journey is one of self-exploration. It was a note Chalotra agreed with. The choices she makes in Season 2 will resonate with people a lot more, she said. She makes some unlikely alliances and it changes her way of thinking. It really changes her. It remains to be seen, though, how much material The Witcher plans to cover in its second season. Considering the first year covered many of the short stories and Ciri’s recollections of life on the run following the Nilfgaard attack, we can safely assume Season 2 will follow the shape of Blood of Elves — the new additions to the cast almost guarantee it.Read Also: The Witcher Showrunner Tells Us How To Build a Monster SeriesThen again, events from the stories and novels have already been remixed and there is no guarantee we ll see all of Ciri s time at Kaer Morhen or the Temple School before season 2 concludes. But no matter what map the series follows in its second year, one theme has been virtually guaranteed by Hissirch — the waning of monsters. As in the novels, fantastical creatures are becoming rarer as the Continent (a loosely European realm) marches closer to modernity. The disappearance of monsters also means Witchers are becoming fewer in number. And while referenced in passing during the first season, this change in the world will be addressed in the upcoming episodes.Who Will Direct Season 2 of The Witcher?(Photo by Katalin Vermes/Netflix)As with season 1, the second year will consist of eight episodes — the seeming new standard for genre shows on streaming services. Directors include Umbrella Academy’s Stephen Surjik, Cursed’s Sarah O’Gorman, The Last Kindgom’s Ed Bazalgette, and Meet the Patel’s Geeta Patel. Hissrich remains the program’s showrunner and executive producer.During WitcherCon, Netflix provided most of the episode names. Only the final title was held back, but the others suggest the timelines may be more or less aligned throughout the season.Episode 1: “A Grain of Truth”Episode 2: “Kaer Morhen”Episode 3: “What Is Lost”Episode 4: “Redanian Intelligence”Episode 5: “Turn Your Back”Episode 6: “Dear Friend”Episode 7: “Voleth Meir”Episode 8: “????”Some of the titles, like A Grain of Truth   Kaer Morhen and Redanian Intelligence are quite evocative for Witcher fans, while What Is Lost and Turn Your Back offer fewer clues in terms of plot. Splitting the difference, Dear Friend appears to be a pointed reference to Yennefer s sarcastic use of the term following Geralt s own use of it while writing a letter asking for her help training Ciri. Voleth Meir apparently refers to a new character who will reportedly play a big role in Ciri s ongoing story. And the name of the finale? Feel free to guess. When Does Season 2 of The Witcher Premiere on Netflix?(Photo by Netflix)The long wait is nearly over. The Witcher returns December 17 on Netflix. It will feature more monsters, more intrigue, and more songs. But, according to Cavill, it will not have another bath scene like the one pictured above. He teased the season will have more manflesh on display, though. What About Season 3?During its TUDUM even on September 25, 2021, Netflix announced the program will continue for a third season. Lost’s Javier Grillo-Marxuach took to Twitter the same day to reveal he will join the program as a producer and writer for the third year. Hopefully, that season will arrive a little bit quicker than Season 2.THERE’S A THIRD SEASON OF THE WITCHER AND THANK GOD SINCE I AM ONE OF THE NEW ADDITIONS TO THE WRITING STAFF! https://t.co/XjsfPQuEkc javier grillo-marxuach (@OKBJGM) September 25, 2021Season 2 of The Witcher premieres on Netflix on December 17, 2021. (Photo by Miramax/Courtesy Everett Collection)The Best LGBTQ+ Movies on HBO MaxIn celebration of Pride month, we ve compiled a list of the best Fresh LGBTQ+ movies you can find on HBO Max right now. (Photo by Elevated Films)What’s a Rotten thing you love?It was the last movie directed by Dee Rees, The Last Thing He Wanted – which was a world premiere, I think, at Sundance, a Netflix release. It s not a movie I love; I can t say that. It s a movie that I kind of admired, and I just felt it got completely ravaged, and I just thought it was a little over the top, because I thought there were definitely interesting things in there. I can t handle this kind of rating, to be honest, and so I come across examples by happenstance – recently, it was Belly (1998). I really don t know why anyone looking at the eye-popping images in this movie could dismiss it. Happily co-presented a screening of it in the “Overdue” series about a decade ago. What is the hardest review that you ve ever written?I don t want this to sound like a cop-out, but I think every review is a bit of a challenge just in that you want to do the best that you can, and be true to your voice, and also be reading the movie as a movie, and being… I don t want to say “true to the movie,” because I don t think it s an obligation to basically channel what the filmmaker s intent was – just give a kind of faithful and faithfully nuanced critique of a film. But that doesn t mean you have to agree with what it s doing. What do you think is the biggest misconception about critics? Some people think critics go in with a negative mindset, or even the way that we use the word “critical” to mean “negative.” And I think that is probably in the dictionary, but a critic is not inherently there to tear something apart. This is a little silly to admit, but when I m watching a new movie, I m sometimes thinking, “please be good,” or “please stay good,” or “please turn good.” I m not looking for the movie to be bad so I can go sharpen my knives and just filet it afterwards. Although, the frustrating thing is, the things you get the most attention for – and this is tough feedback – are often the reviews where you re kind of taking something apart. Before becoming a writer and editor, what did you study in grad school? It was an unholy mix of comparative literature and movies, and ultimately, it just became more of an administrative challenge than anything else. I was very fortunate to have a scholarship stipend, so that kind of freed me up with a little teaching, and just gives you the time to read and watch widely. So it was good for that as well.Teaching is really wonderful just because… one of my favorite things is talking to anyone about what they think about movies, or what they ve liked recently, not just other critics. And when you re in a class setting, you have 15 opinions right there. And then you get to just kind of re-experience things as well when you re moving through your syllabus. On that note, is there something you consider required viewing?I would say required viewing is just a lot of viewing – seeing loads of movies from all eras of film history, and all different directors. Because to pin everything on one or two classics or something like that, I think doesn t work. … It s almost like for every new movie you see, you should also just pick something from the 30s, or the 40s, or the 50s.Is there someone in your life who is not a critic whose opinion you admire and you regularly seek regarding movies? What I really enjoy is just the elevator conversation, or the plane conversation. I mean, anyone would say that s the worst thing you can do: ask the person sitting next to you just as the transatlantic flight is starting, What did you think about Crash? Or something. But I actually love it, and I think that really takes you out of your comfort zone in a sense, because what I do for a living is watch and write movies, and not everyone does that, and I love to hear their opinions.
