Rotten Returns: Underwater Struggles For Air, Becomes Second Horror Flop of 2020(Photo by © Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. )Underwater finished production in 2017 and is just now making its appearance in theaters. Amongst all the new wide launches this weekend, it finished last with a paltry million. The production, with a budget reported to be anywhere between million and million, is the latest in a string of disappointments for Fox, including the 0 million Certified Fresh animated feature Spies in Disguise (which just crossed 5 million worldwide), Ad Astra, and even Ford v Ferrari, which even with over 1 million globally is still chasing its own large budget. The studio has only had one film (the faith-based Breakthrough) enter profit status in its theatrical run since 2018’s mega-hit Bohemian Rhapsody.Underwater, which was reasonably well reviewed – it s at 53% on the Tomatometer – marks a second misfire for a Kristen Stewart vehicle after November’s Charlie’s Angels, and is the second week in a row during which horror audiences mostly ignored one of its own. Sony’s The Grudge dropped straight out of the top 10 in its second week, falling 69% to .5 million for a total of just .9 million. That puts its word-of-mouth multiple in line with other attempted reboots like Conan the Barbarian, Blair Witch, Rings, last year’s Hellboy and, again, Charlie’s Angels, though its budget loss is not nearly as large as the one Underwater is looking at.The Top 10 and Beyond: Rise of Skywalker Near  Billion, Just Mercy Doing Just OK For NowHere we are on Day 24 of The Rise of Skywalker and with 8.16 million it is now the ninth-highest–grossing film ever in that period domestically, just ahead of Rogue One’s 7.36 million. However, that order may change quickly as Rogue had a .06 million fourth weekend on the first January weekend of 2017; ROS comes in with just million, which is also less than the .11 million of The Dark Knight and the .20 million of 2019’s The Lion King in the same frame. That suggests a final gross coming in around the 0 million range, possibly a full 0 million less than The Last Jedi made. While the numbers may pale compared to its recent Star Wars predecessors (sans Solo, of course), this week Rise is going to become just the 15th film ever to gross a half-billion domestically and the 46th film to gross over billion worldwide. The film that has just beaten The Last Jedi on the all-time global box office chart is Disney’s Frozen II. It has now earned .371 billion, passing Episode VIII as well as the final Harry Potter film and Black Panther to become the 11th-highest–grossing film of all time. It needs just .5 million to enter the top 10. Also still chugging along is Jumanji: The Next Level, with another million this weekend bringing its 31-day total to 7 million, the 10th-best for a December release in that timeframe. It has grossed 2 million worldwide. Doing well for Sony too is Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, also on the eve of what should be several Oscar nominations. The film may be neck-and-neck with the 2014 version of the musical Annie after 19 days (.7 million), but that film had a big drop-off after the holidays and stalled with just .9 million. Little Women will get an Oscar bump this week that should propel it to 0-plus million. The two other newbies ran neck-and-neck over the weekend. The expansion of Destin Daniel Cretton’s Just Mercy netted an OK million in 2,375 theaters, which is more than Uncut Gems made in its third-week expansion (.57 million in 2,348 theaters). Uncut Gems may have dropped out of the top 10 already, but it is only about million away from becoming A24’s top domestic grosser ever, replacing Lady Bird’s .95 million. Mercy was also beaten by the Tiffany Haddish/Rose Byrne comedy, Like a Boss, which also opened to an estimated million, a not-so-great start for the million production from Paramount. The film has a current Tomatometer score of 22%. Ending on a positive note, we turn to the ongoing strength of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, which is over 5 million worldwide and is going to pass Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood domestically this week to become the second-highest–grossing original film of 2019 behind Jordan Peele s Us.This Time Last Year: The Upside Lands First Big Surprise of 2019One of the big surprises of 2019 opened at number 1 on this weekend. The Upside, which STX Films acquired from the Weinstein Company, started with .35 million on its journey to over 8 million. A Dog’s Way Home finished third with .25 million, and one of the worst-reviewed films of the year, the delayed Keanu Reeves sci-fi cloning thriller, Replicas, opened in 13th with just .37 million. Rounding out the top five were Aquaman in second with .35 million, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in fourth with .05 million, and Escape Room in fifth with .92 million. Mary Poppins Returns crossed 0 million in sixth place. The top 10 films grossed .77 million and averaged 69.4% on the Tomatometer; this year’s top 10 grossed an estimated 6.8 million and averaged 71.5% with critics. On the Vine: Bad Boys and Dolittle Set For a ShowdownTwo big event films are looking to take the box office back from the leftovers of 2019. The smart money is on Bad Boys for Life, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reuniting for the first time since 2003, only without Michael Bay at the helm. Then, Universal is hoping to avoid another disastrous special effects-laden animal movie in less than a month; if Dolittle can open to more than what Cats has grossed to date (.35 million) that will at least be something. But it will have a lot more to recoup given its inflated 5 million budget and we could be looking at the first big disappointment of 2020.The Full Top 10: January 10-121917 (2019) 89% – .5 million (.22 million total)Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) 52% – .06 million (8.17 million total)Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) 71% – million (7.12 million total)Like a Boss (2020) 21% – million ( million total)Just Mercy (2019) 85% – million (.44 million total)Little Women (2019) 95% – .66 million (.03 million total)Underwater (2020) 47% – million ( million total)Frozen II (2019) 78% – .76 million (9.49 million total)Knives Out (2019) 97% – .73 million (9.62 million total)Spies in Disguise (2019) 77% – .11 million (.62 million total)

Watch: Makeup artist John Caglione Jr. and 42 Entertainment CEO Susan Bonds on creating the look of the Joker, and revealing it to the world. In 2019, Rotten Tomatoes turns 21, and to mark the occasion we’re celebrating the 21 Most Memorable Moments from the movies over the last 21 years. In this special video series, we speak to the actors and filmmakers who made those moments happen, revealing behind-the-scenes details of how they came to be and diving deep into why they’ve stuck with us for so long. Once we’ve announced all 21, it will be up to you, the fans, to vote for which is the most memorable moment of all. In this episode of our ‘21 Most Memorable Moments’ series, makeup artist John Caglione Jr. and Susan Bonds, CEO of 42 Entertainment, break down how the iconic look of Heath Ledger s Joker came to be, and how it was first shown to the world.VOTE FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR 21 MOST MEMORABLE MOVIE MOMENTS POLLThe Movie: The Dark Knight (2008) 94%It may not have kicked off a cinematic universe, but there’s no denying that Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is among the most important superhero movies ever made – and some would say one of the most important movies, period. Released in the summer of 2008, just a few months after Iron Man, it would go on to earn rave reviews (Certified Fresh at 94% on the Tomatometer), make billion at the global box office, and be nominated for eight Oscars, ultimately winning for Best Sound Editing and Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledger. It would also change the Oscars forever: the outcry over the film’s Best Picture nomination snub led to the Academy changing its rules to allow 10 nominees. We found it impossible to isolate a single moment from the film to celebrate for this series, and instead landed on Ledger’s Joker as a whole – a performance, a visual, and a legacy that feels like one mammoth moment in and of itself. And yet, not everyone was convinced the young Australian actor had what it would take to inhabit the character. Here, Susan Bonds, CEO of experiential marketing company 42 Entertainment, reveals how she worked with the filmmakers on the viral campaign that first revealed the Joker to fans, more than a year out from the film’s release – a bravura instance of viral marketing that turned the conversation around and gave fans their first taste of what was going to be one of the most incredible characters and performances to ever hit the big screen. John Caglione Jr., the makeup artist who collaborated with Ledger on the Joker, then reveals how they discovered the character’s iconic look.42 Entertainment was charged with engaging fans with the new film. (Photo by ©Warner Bros./Courtesy Everett Collection)“Remember the Joker card at the end? It was kind of like, well, who is this guy?”Susan Bonds: “One of the first things that our chief creative Alex Lieu suggested to me is go to read The Killing Joke, and go read The Long Halloween, and just go read some of these seminal stories that the Joker was featured in to understand his character. He was very unpredictable. He was an agent of chaos, I believe, is what the Nolans referred to him as, but he was someone who was a very compelling character as well. He had a tragic past; he had a tragic story. We started [the story of the marketing experience] from the last frame of Batman Begins: The head of the mob had been killed, Jim Gordon and Batman were kind of forging their relationship, Harvey Dent wasn t even a conversation at that point. But the Joker… remember the Joker card at the end? It was kind of like, well, who is this guy? The Joker had just barely been introduced. [We wanted to] use the Joker and lead up to TheDark Knight. To give people in Gotham City exposure to who this character might be.”“Quite frankly, the community was very split about how Heath Ledger was going to come in and play one of the most iconic villains of all time.”Bonds: It s hard for us to remember now, because, the film has been out and it s so beloved, but at the time there was a huge amount of curiosity, from fans, about this character. Another thing that we always do [when preparing a campaign], is we go on the message boards and read, and obviously there are very strong fan communities around superhero properties. There was a lot of discussion, and quite frankly, the community was very split about how Heath Ledger was going to come in and play one of the most iconic villains of all time. Jack Nicholson had put an amazing stamp on the character in the first film. And also Heath hadn t really done anything similar to this. In fact, he d done some things that were quite the opposite of this, and I think that there were a lot of questions about whether or not he could play this villain. Now we [at the company], had the benefit of seeing Heath in makeup and even the first reports off the set were just that he was absolutely just transformational. But how do you close that gap, of that uncertainty in the public vein? Of course, it s going to be a year-and-a-half before they see the film. So, one of the things that we did is we put a spotlight on that character from the beginning, and the filmmakers wanted to get out to the community the very first picture of Heath in the Joker make-up.”The first photo the world saw of Ledger s Joker. (Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures, 42 Entertainment)“I think it took over 20 hours and 97,000 e-mails for people to reveal this image.”Bonds: “We devised a scenario where, in comic-book stores all across the country, [fans] found Joker cards that said, ‘I believe in Harvey Dent, too.’ We had put up a little teaser on the Warner Bros. site where you could find ‘I believe in Harvey Dent’ and see the campaign poster featuring Aaron Eckhart for the first time. And so they followed the cards to a URL where, essentially, they got to cast their vote and put in their e-mail address to get x and y co-ordinates, and that allowed them to take a pixel away from the campaign poster revealing the first image of the Joker. This was over year, about fifteen months, before it was coming out. It caught on fire, and I think it took over 20 hours and 97,000 e-mails for people to reveal this image. And, of course, in the process, they re putting up their own pictures of what they think it s going to be like. It really was a very, very effective and dramatic way to change the conversation. I remember having a very visceral reaction to [that first image]. I probably had the same emotional reaction most people had when they saw it. It s very intriguing. I couldn t even really tell it was Heath, you know. It definitely made me want to get more involved in the world.”The Moment: A Different Kind of JokerFrom the moment the world saw that first image of the Joker, the conversation did change. Fans were no longer skeptical: this was the unique, dark take on the character that many had been waiting for. Here was a Joker that wore clown makeup, of a kind, but was no clown. It set the tone not just for the character, but the whole film, and the marketing campaign that led up to it (including landmark activations from 42 Entertainment). Eventually, “Why So Serious?” would become a catch cry for the film – a line smeared in red across posters, repeated in trailers – and one that captured the Joker’s taunting of Batman but also the character and the movie’s taunting of the audience. But more than anything, it was that scarred, smudged, terrifying grin, with Ledger lurking somewhere beneath it, that would stick with us for years: the face of a maniac who was capable of anything. Here, Caglione explains how he and Ledger created it.“Chris brought in books of Francis Bacon paintings, these very blurry images. That really set the tone and set us in a direction of really just muting down and degrading the makeup.”John Caglione Jr.: “I think Heath was in a preliminary wardrobe fitting when I met him. And he was with Chris. And then from there, I did some sketches based on reading the script and meeting with those guys. I think that universe that Chris wanted to create was a very real universe. I went away and started doing little sketches… But it didn t really start to happen until I got to London and we started playing with makeup on Heath and experimenting with a very decaying, kind o

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
During Awards Season, Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley will be reporting on the big contenders, the most important ceremonies, and surprise shifts in the race towards Oscar gold.If Toronto and Telluride start the awards conversation, the first two big indie awards nominations of the year start to put that chatter into sharper focus – showing which titles are actually going to do more than get people talking. On Friday, November 16, Crazy Rich Asians actress Gemma Chan and Private Life’s Molly Shannon will unveil The Film Independent Spirit Awards 2019 nominees, and later this month, The Gotham Awards will hold their annual ceremony honoring the lifetime achievements of Willem Dafoe, Rachel Weisz, and Paul Greengrass, alongside their category winners. Keep a close eye on the winners. In recent years, indie darlings Moonlight and Spotlight won big at both ceremonies and ended the season with a Best Picture win, beating out bigger-budget commercial frontrunners.  With the Gotham Awards kicking things off later this month and the Independent Spirits holding their ceremony the night before the Oscars, let’s take a closer look at these two indie awards shows that effectively bookend the season and examine how well they signal future Oscar accolades.Gotham Awards(Photo by Roy Rochlin/Getty Images)Established: 1991Nominations Announced: October 18Ceremony: Monday, November 26, 2018Voting Body: Contenders are nominated by a jury of film critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators; a separate jury of filmmakers, writers, producers, and film crew members vote on the winner. Both juries are primarily composed of New York or Northeastern-based industry folk.Criteria: Films made with an economy of means, though no specific dollar amount is listed.Comparable Oscar Categories: Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best ScreenplayIn its early years, The Gotham Awards primarily celebrated films created by Northeastern filmmakers or filmed in the area; thus the awards were aptly named ‘Gotham,’ the unofficial pseudonym for New York City. However, in 2004 The Independent Film Project (IFP), the largest and longest-running not-for-profit dedicated to the promotion of independent film, broadened its scope to include the larger filmmaking community, including international films. Announcing nominees in mid-October, The Gothams hammer down the first stakes on the road to next year s Oscars. But with nominations proposed by a jury looking to champion hidden gems, the winners don t always line up with Oscar nominations. Last year, only Jordan Peele’s Get Out earned similar honors at both the Gothams and the Oscars when he took home the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay. Moonlight and Spotlight went on the win Best Picture after winning Best Feature at the Gothams, beating out early front-runners La La Land and The Revenant. On the acting side, Matthew McConaughey and Casey Affleck sprinted off the blocks with Gotham Best Actor wins and crossed the tape with Best Actor Oscars in 2013 and 2016. But since 2013, only Julianne Moore managed to win both a Gotham and an Oscar for her performance in Still Alice. The nomination numbers slightly favor the ladies, with 40% of Gotham Nominees making it to Oscar night, while only 33% of male nominees accomplish the same feat. In the end, the Gothams are a good indication of Oscar potential but not much more than that.Independent Spirit Awards(Photo by Randall Michelson/Getty Images)Established: 1984Nominations Announced: November 16Ceremony: Saturday, February 23, 2019Voting Body: Film Independent MembersCriteria: US-Based film for major Categories. Cost of the completed film must be less than million.Comparable Oscar Categories: Best Feature, Best Director, Best Female Lead. Best Male Lead, Best Supporting Female, Best Supporting Male, Best Screenplay, Best International Film, Best Documentary Feature, Best Cinematography, Best EditingHeld in a tent off the Santa Monica pier on the Saturday before the Oscars, the Independent Spirit Awards are the laid back California cousin to the NYC-based Gothams, or maybe just a boozy, low-budget Oscar pre-party take your pick. Last year, Frances McDormand sported a pajama-styled dress suit, and Timothée Chalamet arrived decked out in an oversized button-down looking like he’d finished a shift at Kwik Trip. Dress code aside, one thing is sure: the Independent Spirit Awards go hand in hand with Oscar gold. Since 2009, every Independent Spirit Best Feature winner has been nominated for Best Picture, with four of the last five Best Feature winners going on to win Best Picture. Since 2010, the acting nominations are on par with the Gothams, with about 30% of the acting nominees also nominated in comparable Oscar categories. Winning an Independent Spirit, however, significantly ups a nom s chances, with a staggering 65% of Indie winners winning on both nights.Still, the awards are known for rewarding performances that don t get much Oscar love: John Hawkes, Molly Shannon, Mya Taylor, Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, and Idris Elba all won acting awards at the Spirits without earning an Oscar nomination in comparable categories. Taking all this into account on Friday, November 16th should drop several clues to the films that will shape the season. This year, current Best Picture frontrunner A Star Is Born is ineligible at the Indie Spirits, leaving Netflix’s Roma the presumed favorite among Film Independent voters. But word has it Roma will be relegated to only Best International Film, even though it was produced by and financed by Netflix and Participant Media, two US-based production companies. If Roma pulls any nominations and happens to win when the trophies are handed out in February, don t rule it out for a Best Picture win. Like La La Land and The Revenant before it, A Star Is Born may be just that – a star that burned bright but fizzled out come voting time. Or it could burn bright. Who knows – it s not even December. Either way, stay tuned Friday to see who gets a little heat from the Spirit nominations.

(Photo by Lionsgate)Do movie trilogies have Fresher Tomatometer scores and make more money at the box office when one director (or co-directors) oversees all three films? Or, is it better if three different directors each tackle different films in a trilogy? With the wildly successful John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum marking the third Certified Fresh John Wick collaboration between director Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves (with a fourth on the way!), we decided to do a Tomatometer deep dive into theatrically released trilogies helmed by single directors. We wanted to know how the Tomatometer scores and domestic box office numbers for trilogies like Francis Ford Coppola s The Godfather, Jay Roach’s Austin Powers, and The Wachowskis’ Matrix films compare to trilogies directed by two or three separate directors. Is consistency actually key? After comparing the Tomatometer and box office data of 83 different trilogies we learned that when one person (or a duo like the Wachowskis) directs all three films, their trilogies make more money on average and have much higher Tomatometer averages than the trilogies in which two or three different people direct the entries. There are exceptions to the rule, of course, but the numbers favor The Dark Knight, Spider-Man, and Back to the Future trilogies, which were lucky enough to have Christopher Nolan, Sam Raimi, and Robert Zemeckis see them all the way through. If you’re interested in reading about the trilogy selection process, and seeing the list of selected franchises, you can check them out below. Also, we know Stahelski co-directed John Wick with David Leitch, but Stahelski stayed around to helm the second and third installments when Leitch moved on to direct Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2; since he has been on the project the entire time, we’re considering him to be “one” director. Here is the data – and the trends we found. The Fewer the Names, the better the trilogy (Photo by © New Line/courtesy Everett Collection)Average Tomatometer for trilogies directed by one person: 68%Average Tomatometer for trilogies directed by two directors: 54%Average Tomatometer for trilogies directed by three directors: 49%Based on the Tomatometer averages, it’s clear that having one person (or team) direct a trilogy is the way to go for Freshness. The 68% Tomatometer average for trilogies with a single director or directing team isn’t super Fresh, but it’s well ahead of the 54% and 49% averages of the trilogies with multiple directors. The Fresh average can be attributed to exceptional franchises such as Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy (97.6% average Tomatometer score), How to Train Your Dragon (94.6%), and The Lord of the Rings (93%), trilogies that received multiple Academy Awards and include no films with Tomatometer scores lower than 91%. Another factor that sets the single director category apart is that 22 of the 34 total trilogies in this category (64.7%) are Fresh, whereas only 14 (56%) and six (24%) of the trilogies in the other two categories have Fresh scores. All Trilogies Drop Off In Quality, But A Single Director Will Help you Stay (Just) Fresh In the End.(Photo by © Sony Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Tomatometer averages of the first, second, and third films in trilogies directed by one person or team: 75.5%, 68%, 60.8%Tomatometer averages of the first, second, and third films in trilogies directed by two people: 71%, 47%, 45%Tomatometer averages of the first, second, and third films in trilogies directed by three people: 71.4%, 46.3%, 35.5%The first, second, and third films in trilogies directed by one person or team all have Fresh Tomatometer averages (75.5%, 68%, 60.8%), and the 7.5% Tomatometer drop-off between the first and second film is pretty solid when compared to the 24% and 25.1% drops when it comes to trilogies with two and three directors, respectively. The sequels that contributed to the Fresh Tomatometer averages throughout the series are classics like John Wick: Chapter 2 (89%), Evil Dead 2 (98%), Spider-Man 2 (93%), Before Midnight (98%), The Dark Knight (94%), The Trip to Spain (82%), and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (93%). The coolest (or nerdiest) fact here is how similar the Tomatometer averages for the trilogies directed by two or three people are until their third films (45% compared with 35.5%). The Tomatometer dropoff for trilogies with three directors was caused by soul-crushers such as Robocop 3 (3%), The Bad News Bears Go to Japan (0%), and Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles (11%).More Directors Equals Less Money (Most of the Time)(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Trilogies directed by one person or team: 2 million domestic box office average (adjusted for inflation)Trilogies directed by two people: 1 million domestic box office averageTrilogies directed by three people: 1 million domestic box office averageThe 2 million total domestic average for trilogies directed by a single person would make any studio executive happy — and probably get them ordering another trilogy ASAP. It helps that eight of the 36 (22.8%) series with a single director or directing team, including the Star Wars prequels and The Hobbit trilogy, made over billion domestically after adjusting for inflation. The 1 and 1 million box office averages for the other groups of trilogies are very respectable. However, only six of the 58 trilogies (10.3%) in the other two categories made over billion domestically; these multi-director trilogies include Iron Man, Beverly Hills Cop, and the original Star Wars trilogy. The newest Star Wars trilogy will likely join their ranks.Domestic box office averages (adjusted for inflation) of the first, second, and third films in trilogies directed by one person or team: 1 million, 6 million, 0 millionDomestic box office averages of the first, second, and third films in trilogies directed by two people or teams: 8 million, 6 million, 5 millionDomestic box office averages of the first, second, and third films in trilogies directed by three people or teams: 8 million, 7 million, millionThe standout trend here is that the box office averages for the movies directed by one person or team all stayed above 0 million – the majority of the first film’s audience kept coming back for more. Trilogies directed by one person also had the smallest box office drop between each film; the million (30%) box office drop from the first to third film is smaller than the 5 (45%) and 6 (60%) million drops for trilogies with two directors and three directors, respectfully.ARE THERE EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE? (Photo by Quantrell D. Colbert/Universal Pictures)Of course, when it comes to Tomatometer ratings, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has proven with their Iron Man (two directors), Thor (three directors), and Captain America (one single director and a directing team) trilogies that it sometimes doesn’t matter how many directors helm the movies. Also, the Pitch Perfect, Hannibal, Star Trek (2009-2016), Meet the Parents, X-Men, Beverly Hills Cop, and Wolverine trilogies pulled in huge amounts of money and had multiple directors. So, trilogies can absolutely work with multiple directors. HOW DID WE PICK THE TRILOGIES?(Photo by Lionsgate)Since John Wick tells the continuing story of Keanu Reeves s titular assassin killing hundreds of henchmen on his quest for revenge, we stuck with trilogies that told a continuous story featuring the same character(s) or plot lines throughout three films. Examples are Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy, and Todd Phillips  Hangover trilogy, which saw the exploits of the same characters to a conclusion. We didn’t include trilogies with loose-connections (Noriko Trilogy), similar themes (Three Colors), or actors (Cornetto Trilogy) tying them all together. Also, you may notice that some of the trilogies we included such as the Pirates of the Caribbean, Jason Bourne, Jurassic Park, and Scream franchises went on to have more than three films. We included them because they had three-film narrative arcs that were completed with the third installment (e.g., Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). Some of these films had fourth (or fifth or sixth installments), but most of these later installments were meant to be part of a new trilogy (e.g. Jurassic World and Scream 4, which was supposed to be the beginning of a new trilogy). Today, Johansson entertains on a global scale and holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing actress ever.Johansson got her first starring role at 12-years-old in the dark road comedy Manny Lo, and it was only four years later she got the indie cred double whammy with Ghost World and The Man Who Wasn t There. Lost in Translation, Sofia Coppola s melancholic drama of drifting romantic souls, made her a household name. Next came a brief stint as Woody Allen s muse in Match Point, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and Scoop.Johansson joined the MCU as Black Widow in Iron Man 2, and has been a steady participant since, leading into Avengers: Endgame. But she ain t even close to being done yet, unlike some of her co-stars: A Black Widow spin-off is her return and likely farewell to the MCU. Back in 2015, one of the most popular television series in recent memory came to an end after six seasons, but the finale of Downton Abbey was also soon followed by news that a film would be forthcoming. It took almost four years for that film to happen, but it appears the final result is worth the wait: not only is Downton Abbey currently Certified Fresh at 84%, but it also topped the box office in its opening weekend and earned the highest debut total of any film produced by Focus Features. Set two years after the series finale, the story catches up with the Crawley family and their servants as they prepare for a visit from King George and Queen Mary, and critics and audiences alike say it s a satisfying return that understands what made the series such a success in the first place.Ahead of the film s release, RT editor Jacqueline Coley sat down with Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern (Robert and Cora Crawley) to chat about the series popularity and how it was translated for the big screen. They recalled their favorite moments from the series, explored how their characters grew over time, and explained the difference between Downton Abbey fandom in the U.K. and the U.S. Check out the full interview above, and let us know what you thought of the movie.Downton Abbey is in theaters now.

大炮轰小人1 (Photo by Else Films)Horror films thrive on their aura of danger, and whether you’re in a darkened theater surrounded by strangers or in your basement rec room with all the lights turned off, the experience can be heightened by the mere suggestion that something might be “off” about the movie you’re watching. It s a concept that s so compelling that Shudder recently premiered an entire docuseries dedicated to it; it s called, rather appropriately, Cursed Films. In honor of the most recent addition to the canon the faux documentary Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made   we’re going to pay a little tribute to the “found footage” horror movies that tr

What did these three movies do that made them into Christmas legends and marked 2003 as a Christmas movie season to remember? We looked into it and came up with some answers.1. They Turned Christmas on Its Head and Started Some Trends(Photo by Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)At a time when holiday movies were skewing younger, simpler, and more outlandish, these three films went against the trend of saccharine, family-centric entertainment and told compelling stories with complex characters in non-traditional situations. Bad Santa took the iconic character of Santa Claus (and the slightly less iconic character of the Mall Santa), and transformed him into a hard-drinking, sex-addicted criminal with seedy friends and morals looser than his big red suit. Miracle on 34th Street this is not. With a strict R rating, this was not a movie for kids, but Bad Santa was never about appealing to families, and by playing into its raunchiness, it created a whole new style of holiday film.Since then, this grown-up Christmas trope has been channeled in recent movies like Office Christmas Party, A Very Harold Kumar 3D Christmas, and The Night Before, but none have mastered it quite like Bad Santa. In a similar vein, what Bad Santa did for grit, Love Actually did for romance. By crafting an ensemble romantic comedy around a holiday, Love Actually shockingly created a whole subgenre, with recent films New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, and Mother’s Day all trying to recapture what Love Actually created.Love Actually also brought about a surge in Christmas romantic comedies that is still felt to this day. Films like A Christmas Prince, The Princess Switch, and whatever other movie came out on Netflix while you were reading this can thank Love Actually for turning the Christmas season into the season of love.At the same time, Elf may appear like a simple holiday movie for children, but its humor and irreverent take on the holiday season is more than suitable for all ages. It may borrow from many classic holiday film tropes, but it is first and foremost a comedy. It’s heartwarming and festive, but also so clever and genuinely hilarious that it transcends typical holiday family fare and becomes something every adult not just parents of young children can enjoy watching.2. They Launched the Careers of Some Huge Stars(Photo by New Line Cinema)A large part of what makes Bad Santa, Love Actually, and Elf so great is the acting; could anyone else have pulled off Papa Elf, or danced as charmingly as Hugh Grant, or grumbled and belched his way through Bad Santa as convincingly as Billy Bob Thornton? But beyond their established stars, each film managed to find some Christmas magic in relatively unknown actors who would go on to bigger and better things.Thornton had already been nominated for three Oscars (and won one, for the screenplay of Sling Blade) when he starred in Bad Santa, but one of his co-stars would go on to become a thrice-nominated Oscar darling as well. Playing the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it role of prostitute Opal, Octavia Spencer’s few lines didn’t lead to instant recognition, but they did show off the acting chops that would lead to turns in The Help, Hidden Figures, and The Shape of Water, all three of which earned her Best Supporting Actress nominations from the Academy, and the first of which resulted in a win.Love Actually also served as an inflection point for some of its actors, with established movie stars, up-and-comers, and others waiting to break through. Nowhere is this breakthrough more apparent than in the love triangle between Juliet, Peter, and Mark or as we now know them, Keira Knightley, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Andrew Lincoln.(Photo by Universal Pictures)In 2003, Keira Knightley was in the midst of a moment. Fresh off Bend It Like Beckham and the first installment in billion-dollar Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Knightley came to the 2003 holiday season on a wave of fame and carried her success both into Love Actually and beyond. Her scene partners haven’t fallen far behind, though.Playing the lovestruck Mark, Lincoln may not resemble the post-apocalyptic sheriff from The Walking Dead that would turn him into a worldwide celebrity, and few might have predicted that the young actor playing Juliet’s husband, a then relatively unknown Chiwetel Ejiofor, would go on to receive an Oscar nomination for his lead role in the Best Picture-winning 12 Years A Slave. As for Elf, you might think that it was obviously going to be a hit with comedy legend Will Ferrell and the adorkable Zooey Deschanel as its leads, but it was an adventurous pairing at the time. Ferrell had just finished a legacy-making run on Saturday Night Live, and he had appeared in small roles in just over a dozen films, but it was still unknown whether he could lead a movie. The success of Elf led Ferrell to a career in comedy blockbusters like Anchorman, Step Brothers, The Other Guys, Daddy’s Home, and many more. As for Deschanel, she would go on to star in romantic comedies like 500 Days of Summer, Yes Man, and the hit sitcom New Girl. Not bad for a lowly mall elf.3. They’re Still Fan Favorites, and We Can Prove It(Photo by New Line Cinema)Despite coming out 15 years ago, these three movies are already holiday staples, and there is actual evidence to back that up.A year ago, FandangoNOW users were asked to vote for the best Christmas movie of the 21st century unsurprisingly, Elf  was the fan favorite, followed by The Polar Express, Love Actually in the third spot, and Bad Santa finishing fifth. More recently, FandangoNOW also asked its millennial users to rank which movies they plan on streaming this holiday season, and this time Elf slipped to second-most popular, while Love Actually came in eighth and Bad Santa finished in the 15th spot. A similar study of Roku users searches from the 2017 holiday season shows Elf as the most searched-for Christmas movie, and Love Actually as the ninth most sought after.Plus, even the Tomatometer agrees! In Rotten Tomatoes’ recent list of The 50 Best Christmas Movies of All Time, Elf, Love Actually, and Bad Santa all made the cut.4. They Were All Box Office Hits(Photo by Universal Pictures)You’d think there’s only room for so many Christmas movies in one month, but that wasn’t the case in 2003. Despite all three films being released within three weeks of each other, Elf, Love Actually, and Bad Santa were surprise hits. In fact, Elf and Love Actually both raked in more than 0 million dollars worldwide. And they opened on the same weekend!Elf opened at #2 in the box office with a very healthy million in its first weekend, and it didn’t leave the Top 10 until after the new year. Over the course of its run, it made more than 0 million in the U.S. and nearly million abroad.Love Actually was also a Top 10 film in America for five consecutive weeks, but it did most of its heavy lifting overseas. The British production held the top spot in the U.K. box office for its first four weeks in release and spent four more weeks as a Top 5 film there, earning more than million during its British run.Even the R-rated Bad Santa made more than million over its run, which, coupled with a production budget of only million, was more than enough to convince a studio to take a chance on Bad Santa 2 but let’s not talk about that. In total, these three holiday classics made over 0,000,000 worldwide during one holiday season. So, what was it that made these three films so financially successful, popular, and impactful?Elf, Love Actually, and Bad Santa each appealed to an audience that hadn’t been totally captured in a holiday film. Whether it was the romance of Love Actually, the humor and heart of Elf, or the raunchiness of Bad Santa, each offered a unique perspective on the holiday and created a following that is now arguably stronger than ever. Also, these are simply three elfin’ good movies.Elf and Love Actually were released on November 7, 2003. Bad Santa was released on November 26, 2003.

大炮轰小人1 How s the Pacing? While the series benefits from giving everyone more to do, the pacing could be quicker. Robert Rorke, New York Post While Mindhunter: Season 2 doesn t exactly race out of the gate as it builds on the foundation of Season 1, it remains a compelling and impeccably shot crime thriller. Jesse Schedeen, IGN Movies It already feels like the series is evolving and maturing, becoming more complex as the relationships start to change, both professionally and personally. Sam Loveridge, SFX Magazine The series is still far more Zodiac than Seven, but it s also more propulsive now, with no fewer than three ongoing investigations. Dan Fienberg, Hollywood Reporter(Photo by Netflix)How s the Cast This Time? [By the time you see her in episode 3,] you’re probably wondering what Carr is up to since she doesn’t have a ton of screen time so far. That’s a shame because if you have Anna Torv in your show, you should use her in every scene. Rachel Paige, Refinery29 Every shot is deliberate, the dialog cuts like a finely honed blade, and all of the actors bring their A-Game. Mikkel Snyder, Black Nerd Problems [Groff] has a gift for seeming both confident and insecure at the same exact moment, making Ford both insufferable and sympathetic in the same breath. It’s a tough balancing act, but Groff nails it McCallany plays Tench as a thoughtful, even introspective man who buries his emotions in a gruff exterior. Chain-smoking and knocking back liquor, to the outside world he appears to be a tough-as-nails, no-bullshit guy. But inside, he’s silently screaming, and McCallany does remarkable work bringing out the confusion and uncertainty in Tench’s eyes. Chris Evangelista, Slashfilm After a couple of cracking sequences in which Holden and Bill interview the likes of the Son of Sam killer, and a handful of others, the show peaks with a stunning verbal confrontation with none other than Charles Manson As tremendous as each of the performers playing the killers are, Australian actor Damon Herriman is positively electric as the charismatic cult leader. Rohan Naahar, Hindustan Times Mindhunter is a series about difficult conversations with bosses, with family members, with serial killers and none of that would work without its impeccable ensemble. Clint Worthington, The Spool(Photo by Netflix)Is It Scary? The series feeds more on the idea that knowledge and understanding of the human condition — in all its sometimes horrific glory — is what s truly fascinating. Kevin Yeoman, ScreenRant The scariest thing in Mindhunter, Netflix’s 1970s-set serial killer drama overseen by the exacting-but-terrific director David Fincher, is always the chalk outline There’s something a little idiosyncratic about a serial killer show that never shows serial killing. Yes, it shows us lots and lots of serial killers, but most of them are in prison, and the business of the show is talking to them, trying to get them to reveal their secrets, hoping to get just close enough to see to the bottom of their particular abyss without falling in. Mindhunter never shows us grisly murders themselves — it only shows the aftermath, in the form of those chalk outlines and the occasional crime scene photo. Emily VanDerWerff, Vox Mindhunter’s most impressive accomplishment, though, is to weave an engrossing mystery without trivialising these real-life killers and their atrocious crimes. The series fascinates rather than unsettles. Ed Power, Daily Telegraph (UK) It s chilling stuff that burrows under your skin, and not suited to delicate constitutions. Wenlei Ma, News.com.au(Photo by Netflix)How s the Directing? [The premiere is] a thoughtfully composed, immaculately color-coded episode of television that makes compelling use of light and shadow. Katie Rife, AV Club As with last season, David Fincher directs the first episode with his usual panache, especially during the cold open. Scott Tobias, New York Magazine/Vulture Those who slept on season one should take note; David Fincher is at his full power on Netflix and makes Mindhunter a must-watch. Christopher James, AwardsCircuit.com(Photo by Netflix)Final Verdict? The long-awaited second season of David Fincher s Mindhunter affirms the program as Netflix s strongest drama. Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com It is effective, haunting, scary, and one of the most provocative shows ever and hands down one of the best shows of the year. Alex Maidy, JoBlo s Movie Emporium The Verdict: For a series that has sat on the sidelines for two years, there’s an unexpected urgency and vibrancy to Mindhunter’s second season at times it could do with a little more visual panache to help key sequences stand out. This is a small complaint, however, for an otherwise addictive and engrossing drama. Joe Lipsett, Consequence of Sound Mindhunter returns with a great season 2: David Fincher s series is confirmed as one of the best on Netflix. (review in Spanish) Mikel Zorrilla, EspinofMindhunter season 2 is now streaming on Netflix
