There s an attempt to add emotional resonance to stuff that I don t think entirely works. There s zombie people living on a boat, but it s never quite explained, which is fine. When you re watching things at home, do you have a screening ritual?My ritual is I don t have a ritual. I do have a ritual when I go to the movies. The Alamo Drafthouse here in Downtown LA – I go there and I get a popcorn and I get a Coke Zero and I watch the trailers and, usually, I get chicken strips and that s about as close as I come.What is the best thing that you watched in quarantine?The Underground Railroad. I think this is the best TV show in a long time and I am just blown away by it, and I hope that more people discover it over the years to come. I watched Neon Genesis Evangelion toward the tail end of quarantine, and that is just one of the best things. It s so weird and complicated and beautiful and strange.I rewatched all of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine with some friends and … What a fun show? Like, what a good show? It s always been my favorite Star Trek and this rewatch just kind of solidified that.(Photo by Hulu)What are you most proud of in your career so far?If you were going to ask me one or two pieces, I d probably point to my Handmaid s Tale season three review, which I came out as a trans woman. I feel like my recent Underground Railroad review was a really great attempt to wrestle with some stuff within the form.What I m proudest of is the stable of collaborators I ve built. This is the thing I feel like if I want people to take anything away from my time in journalism and my time in criticism that they re not taking away from it. What we did at The A.V. Club, we helped build a team of freelancers. We built a team of writers. We built a team of regular contributors that substantially changed the scope of the Someone just came in and threw a salad on the floor! Make that your lead, “Emily VanDerWerff s wife enters and throws a salad on the floor.” [laughs]… The thing that we did at The A.V. Club is we built this team of regular collaborators, regular writers and substantially shifted. … It s been similarly true at Vox. I continue to try to figure out: Who s new? Who s up and coming? Whose writing do I really like? Then, I try to work with them whenever I can. That s the thing I m proudest of. I say that sometimes and people think of me as a writer because I write a lot, but I am, honestly, proud of some of my editorial managerial achievements and choices.What is the hardest review or piece you ve written so far?That Handmaid s Tale piece. I went through many drafts. I don t struggle with reviews, generally. I usually sit down and have a sense of what I want to say. So yeah, I think it s probably the Handmaid s Tale review because it was a question of striking exactly the right balance and understanding how much to talk about Handmaid s Tale and how much to talk about myself, and how to blend those two things together.If television isn t some part of a queer person s coming out, are they really queer?This is true.That’s a joke based on my experience.I spent most of my adolescence watching women on television and really identifying with them. When I was a teenager, I grew my hair like Angela on My So-Called Life and just so wanted that look and wouldn t tell myself why. I knew why, I just wouldn t look at it.One of the times when I almost came out was in 2013. I was watching New Girl, one of my favorite television programs. There s this moment where Zooey Deschanel is wearing just the cutest dress. I saw that and some part of my brain was like, Zoey Deschanel and you are around the same age. If you wanted to, you could wear that dress. She s significantly shorter than me and significantly in better shape than I was at the time, but just something zinged through my brain and I immediately shut it down because I didn t come out to myself until 2018 – it was a five-year gap in there.Television gives us new ways of imagining ourselves and consistent ways of seeing ourselves. It gives us new ways of thinking about what is possible. I think it is not a coincidence that I came out in the midst of TV deciding it was cool to tell stories about trans people, sometimes very poorly, but doing it more and more often. Seeing Laverne Cox in Orange is the New Black was a big moment for me. Transparent was a big moment for me – as many issues as that show has both in front of and behind the camera, it was a huge, huge deal for me.What s interesting has been seeing how now that I m out, I ve kind of moved past those things and I don t need them. Hollywood is still very much stuck in, If we re going to tell a story about a trans person, we d better over-explain everything. I think that s fine. The cis need to have trans-ness explained to them to some degree because it s very confusing to them apparently.Over and over again, apparently.It s important to do that, but in my own work – in Arden, we had a character who was trans in our second season. There was an episode where she did a lot of explaining about what it meant to be trans. Then, I talked with the actress about it and she was like, I don t know if we need this. I was like, “I don t know if we need it either,” so I just took it all out. There are remnants of it in there, but it s all just stuff that would have come up in normal conversation.The show assumes that you care about the character on an emotional level. You don t need to care about them on an intellectual level. You don t need to sit there and know what their dosage is every day and if they take their estrogen sublingually, or if they do a weekly injection, or if they have patches. The show assumes you don t care about that because why would you? I m not saying that we wrote the greatest trans character in history. Other people can and should say that. I am not going to say that, but I feel like we got closer to it than we would have been if we had just gone with my script where I was like, Here s how it feels to be a trans woman. We need some of that. We certainly need some of that in mainstream TV and movies – that s how we move this conversation – but we also need stuff that is a little bit more specific and weird and interesting.亚博竞猜怎么样oundation makes it sound like the show might be a bit less literary. But the most interesting person who ll be yelling CUT! for Foundation — and twice no less — is Roxann Dawson, who has directed episodes of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, House of Cards, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but is best known to fans of epic sci-fi space operas as B Elanna Torres from Star Trek: Voyager a show she directed twice before doing the same for 10 episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise.Who s in the Cast of Foundation?(Photo by Apple TV+)Like the crew, many of the cast members also have experience with epic space stories. For the role of Hari Seldon, Goyer and company cast two-time Emmy nominee Harris, who s well versed in the ways of space and TV thanks to his role as Anderson Dawes in multiple episodes of The Expanse. Harris recently starred in HBO s Emmy-winning limited series Chernobyl, for which he received his second Emmy nomination; played King George VI in multiple episodes of The Crown; and had roles in the shows The Terror, Carnival Row, Mad Men (his first Emmy nomination), and Fringe.Foundation also stars Lee Pace, who plays Emperor Brother Day, and will undoubtedly draw from his experience playing Ronan the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy. Pace also has experience with epics, and royalty, having played the Elven king Thranduil in The Hobbit movies, as well as TV experience from playing Joe MacMillan in Halt and Catch Fire. He is also Emmy nominated for his role as Ned on ABC fantasy series Pushing Daisies.Some of the casting of Foundation will change things up from the book. While the character of Eto Demerzel is male in the novels, the role in the show will instead be played by a female, Finnish actor Laura Birn. Birn is best known for the 2014 movie A Walk Among the Tombstones; though she s also no stranger to serialized entertainment, having played Elena in all eight episodes of Netflix s The Innocents.Alfred Enoch has been cast in an as-yet-unidentified role. Like many of his costars, Enoch also has experience with epics, having played Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter movies, and experience with TV, as Wes Gibbins in How to Get Away with Murder. So he s probably playing a space wizard who s in law school or something.The cast of Foundation also includes Terrence Mann as Brother Dusk, who is the eldest member of the royal family. Mann previously played Whispers in the Netflix show Sense8, though horror fans know him better as Ug, the interstellar bounty hunter in all four Critters movies. Joining him in the royal family as Brother Dawn is Cassian Bilton, a British actor whose previous credits include a handful of short films, including the BAFTA-nominated Shoal.Bilton is not the only relatively unknown actor in the Foundation cast, though. Gaal Dornick, a mathematician who becomes Seldon s biographer, will be played by Lou Llobell (pictured), who also appears in the upcoming sci-fi movie Voyagers, while the role of Salvor Hardin, who is the first mayor of Terminus City, will be played by Leah Harvey, who was previously seen in the wrestling movie Fighting with My Family.When Does Foundation Premiere?(Photo by Apple TV+)Like every other show in production these days, production on Foundation experienced delays related to COVID-19, coming to a complete halt in March 2020 before resuming in October. The cast and crew then moved to Malta in January of 2021 to film for a month, then to two separate locations the Canary Islands. Currently, the series is scheduled to debut on Apple TV+ on September 24, 2021, which means you still have plenty of time to read the 220-page original novel — or heck, the entire 660-page trilogy — and forget most of the plot twists before the show comes to your viewing screen.

It s been a while since Mark Ruffalo starred in a non-MCU movie – three years in fact. In his first post-MCU and post-Endgame role, the three-time Oscar nominee plays corporate attorney Robert Bilott in the true-to-life thriller, Dark Waters, which tells the story of the lawyer s investigation and ultimate exposure of a major West Virginia pollution scandal involving mega-corporation DuPont. Directed by Todd Haynes (Carol, Far From Heaven), the movie is Certified Fresh, and critics are praising Ruffalo for his turn as the dogged attorney. In the lead-up to the film s release, Ruffalo sat with us to go deep on how he came to embody real-life hero Bilott, from the time he spent with him on- and off-set to why he felt compelled to tell his story.

It is a darker retelling. There s no question, Serkis told Rotten Tomatoes. It s a unique retelling in that respect because Scrooge in this is not some sort of old miser character. He s actually a tough businessmen who is in denial and doesn t want to really engage with his own moral relativism. We caught up with the stars to get a feel for the new adaptation — and it indeed feels scary. Here are five ways this Christmas Carol one-ups previous efforts.1. This Cool Scrooge Resonates With Modern Audiences(Photo by Kurt Iswarienko/FX)Scrooge is not as crotchety here as in previous interpretations of the character; in fact, the character may resemble more real-life people than ever before. Pearce offered a personal assessment of his character. They really wanted somebody this time who still had been affected in life the way that we know Scrooge has been, but that his demeanor and his presence in the world was more of a businessman, as a leader who is a kind of a cocky, confident, swaggering kind of asshole, basically, Pearce told Rotten Tomatoes. I think it was important for Nick, our director, and for Steven, our writer, to get away from the crotchety old man who exhibits on the surface the pain and damage that he s experienced in his life. And the fact that he s turned away from the world and plays somebody who s actually up front to the world and says, Come on, bring it on. Bring on your questions about who I am and what it is, because I ve got a really good response for you. And kind of like that, be a little bit more affronting and aggressive. And so, in a way, we still get to the point where we drag him through his past, and we make him look at the things he s done to people, and we crack open the soul that is a damaged soul. 2. This Ghost of Christmas Past Plays Dirty(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)But his Scrooge will face a harder fight in Knight s version, Pearce confirmed: It s a tougher journey because the Ghost of Christmas Past is a really hard nut to crack. The Ghost of Christmas Past is jaded, the character description offers. He’s been sent to make lost souls repent before, why should Scrooge be any different? He prods and pokes where it hurts, transforming himself into those known to his charge, finding a place of pain, shame and self-knowledge. But can he get Scrooge to recognize himself, and repent? 3. The Ghost of Christmas Present Has a Much More Personal Relationship With Scrooge(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)Charlotte Riley appears as the Ghost of Christmas Present, while Jason Flemyng is the Ghost of Christmas Future. Both ghosts are updated here with new twists on the characters. She plays my sister who has died some years before, Pearce said, and she has now come back as the Ghost of Christmas Present. And — particularly after the ruthlessness of Andy Serkis Ghost of Christmas Past, who shape-shifts into all sorts of characters through my past, and he s really tough on me — then she comes in as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and it s my long lost dead sister, so it s so emotional and so touching and painful. And then it s capped off with Jason playing sort of ruthless again, but silent like the silent-killer kind of attitude, as the Ghost of Christmas Future. 4. Steven Knight s Take Is Indeed Chilling(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)One of the most unsettling features of the new story is how closely it hews to issues — and personalities — we face today, which is a very intentional choice. Serkis said he knew he was in for something special when he heard Knight was attached. When I heard that there was another version of Christmas Carol being made, I kind of thought, Wow, OK. Again? Another one?' he said. But as soon as I knew that Steven Knight was writing it, I knew that now, This is going to be an interesting take, because I knew this was going to be the beginning of a journey into his exploration of Dickens in other stories as well, which is the case. Knight and the stars had previously talked about stripping down the story, which Serkis expounded on for Rotten Tomatoes. When we say stripping down, it was more about not getting bogged down in the sort of tropes of a costume drama, Victorian drama, and allowing it to live afresh as a really contemporary piece of writing, he said. And therefore, and so, even though you re what you, of course, allowing the visuals, you do that work, you want to feel that the character is alive and very present and not sort of imagining what it might be like to have been alive in the 19th century. You re not doing that. You re actually saying these are people, people are people, and we still have the same issues, problems. We need to unpack the difficulties of the human condition in this, in a very modern way to make this story resonate with a fresh audience. 5. Serkis Costuming Challenge Continues Here Even If He s Not a CG-Enhanced Character(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)Serkis, known especially for his CG-enhanced performances like Gollum and Caesar in the Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes franchises, faced a different sort of challenge here. [The costume] was so heavy. It was like going from the sublime to the ridiculous. I couldn t possibly have more makeup or costume to bear, but it was great, actually. It was nice to play a character in the flesh, and it was a particularly challenging character, not least because it was like sensory deprivation actually wearing this costume. I had long locks of hair and an additional beard. I had an eye that I couldn t see out of. I had scars all over my face. I had long nails, so once I got into costume, I was able to kind of get into the character and stay there. I had to. To compound his costuming issues, they filmed in summer. It was pretty brutal at times, Serkis said. I just had to at least take the hat off and get the top layer off as much as I could. But — actor problems. At the center of it all is Zendaya’s (Spider-Man: Far from Home) Rue, a 17-year-old drug addict who, as we learn in the program s pilot, suffered an overdose and was only saved because her younger sister found her in time. Rue s drug problem goes deep, and it s a perspective of addiction that TV hasn t really explored much. It s been nearly 18 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks inflicted a deep wound into the fabric of America, but while we tend to focus mainly on the political aftermath and various military actions we ve been involved in since, not much attention has been given to the generation who grew up in this new reality.Stories following teens who are disconnected from their parental adult counterparts are nothing at all new, but positing Rue s introduction to the world with the fall of the Twin Towers playing out in the background helps to supply subtext to the challenges her and other young people have had laid out before them. And as her emotional issues begin to form, her parents are quick to have any and every diagnosis handed her way until she s juggling multiple medical fixes for multiple anxiety disorders — none of which are really proven to be sound diagnoses to begin with.Debbie DayInstead of handling the underlying problem, well-intentioned adults teach young Rue that the best way to cure what ails her is to treat her symptoms. As her relationship with her mother becomes fractured, and her father falls victim to cancer, it was shown as an inevitability that she d eventually graduate from medically-assigned prescriptions to her own experiments in self-medicating — all just to find the happiness that has, somehow, eluded her this entire time.There are other characters featured in the show, and yes, we re about to get to them. But it s necessary that we really explore Rue s struggles and motivations because, not only is Zendaya the lead of the show, her performance is the program s backbone. She is the ongoing narrator, walking us through the misadventures of her peers, giving us a fly-on-the-wall perspective of the bigger picture, as the series begins to unfold. And as Rue even admits, she s not the most reliable narrator. You know, because she s always high.(Photo by Eddy Chen/HBO)She may be out of rehab, but Rue s not at all into staying sober. As she s integrated back into high school life, we re introduced to a handful of her peers, all carrying around their own potentially traumatic baggage. Transgender teen Jules (Hunter Schafer) finds a version of solace in random sexual encounters with older men — except maybe it’s a form of self-harm — while high school jock Nate (Jacob Elordi) has extreme anger issues, leading him to extreme acts of violence. In episode 2, we learn that his flashy flavor of toxic masculinity is indeed masking some deep-seated sexual insecurities, all brought on at a young age after he discovers explicit videos of his father s secret homosexual escapades. Mix in the sordid connection that the older man Jules hooked up with is actually Nate s dad Cal (Eric Dane) and the show really takes shape into something even Bret Easton Ellis would envy.Then there s Kat (Barby Ferreira), the nerdy girl who loses her virginity on a drunken dare at a house party. From the initial shame brought on by discovering that her sexual awakening was caught on video, and distributed across the school — even prompting a brief body-shaming interlude with the school principal — she quickly learns of the connective power of sex and the internet. For the first time in her life, she s the object of desire and that discovery changes her entire life.(Photo by HBO)Euphoria is a show that is out to press people s buttons. Cut from the same unsettling cloth as angsty teen movies like Harmony Korine s Gummo and Larry Clark s Kids, Levinson — who has gone on the record about tapping into his own history with drug abuse to write this story — gives us a program that sounds a warning siren about the dangers teens continue to face in the real and online realms, especially for complacent parents everywhere, who are alerted to get involved in their kids lives and pay attention.The series features adults, but when they make their appearance, their roles are mostly presented as background fodder. Euphoria actually has a lot in common with the 2014 indie horror hit It Follows; the parents aren t really in the picture, the overall environment has an inescapable muted quality of a suburban purgatory, and the teens in both that film and this TV series are stalked by their own demons — of course, the ones in the HBO series aren t STD zombies out to commit post-coitus murder. But we digress.(Photo by Eddy Chen/HBO)All this said, there are definitely gripes with the show s tone and subject matter. Levinson has both writing and directing credits here, but at times it does feel as if his vision is a bit disconnected from the 2019 reality these kids are living in.Writing in The New York Times this weekend, health care correspondent Margot Sanger-Katz and Indiana University School of Medicine professor of pediatrics Aaron E. Carroll observed: HBO’s new series Euphoria portrays a youth bacchanal that’s a stretch even for Hollywood. The show suggests that our modern society, with its smartphone dating apps, internet pornography and designer drugs, has made teenage life more extreme and dangerous than ever before. Actually, nearly the opposite is true. Many of the problems these teens face, though, tend to be of the eternal variety, because, really, the trials and tribulations of disaffected youth will always be a thing. Rue s Hunter S. Thompson–style recollections inject an oddly engaging Fear and Loathing quality, giving Euphoria a pointed and visually stunning perspective.(Photo by Eddy Chen/HBO)Rue knows drugs are bad. But her self-hatred runs deep. This drive to be happy, along with her predisposition to despise herself, sets the foundation for the polarizing nature of the whole show.While it may be difficult for many of Euphoria s adult audience to completely relate to her struggles — and that of Jules, Nate, Kat, and the rest — certain visceral elements punch their way through the veil, reminding us of bullies from the past, of the suffocating pressures of adolescent life, of the burdening weight of societal expectations, and the primal need to be loved and accepted that drives each and every one of us to move on, if not exactly forward.Like this?
