And the first African-American ever.It was just about as auspicious a debut as any director has had, and Singleton carried the torch with more propulsive dramas: the lyrical Poetic Justice starring Janet Jackson, and the university-set Higher Learning. Neither were able to achieve the same high marks with critics back in the day, though they connected with their intended targets if the Audience Scores are anything to be reckoned with. Rosewood, about the 1923 Florida massacre, could be seen something of a return to form.Singleton formally entered his Hollywood era with the new century, delivering the sly Shaft remake starring Samuel L. Jackson and the first Fast and Furious franchise sequel. After 2011 s Abduction with Taylor Lautner fizzled, Singleton turned to television, directing episodes of The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story and Empire, and creating drug crime serial Snowfall for FX. In April 2019, Singleton passed away at the age of 51 after lapsing into a coma due to a stroke he suffered two weeks earlier. As the movie industry deals with the loss of a pioneering talent and trailblazing voice, we celebrate his life by looking back on all of John Singleton s movies.

The character was rebooted in 2018 with Tom Hardy in a standalone anti-hero take on the classic villain, and that film, Venom, opened to .2 million. While Rotten at 30% on the Tomatometer, it made it to 3.5 million (a 2.66 multiple), even if its competitor that October weekend (Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born) ultimately bested it with over 5 million. But that was then, this is now. The world has been through the downswing of a pandemic and not even the richest sequel or franchise film has been able to outgross its predecessor in that time. Until this weekend, when Venom: Let There Be Carnage opened at .1 million, beating the original film, marking the biggest three-day weekend of the pandemic era, and the second-best October opening ever behind Joker s .2 million opening in 2019.Let’s trace the path of the weekend for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which is currently registering a 59% on the Tomatometer – one precious percentage point away from Fresh. On Thursday night, the theater-exclusive grossed .6 million, which was second only to Black Widow’s .2 million pre-Premier Access Thursday for the pandemic era. On Friday the film grossed an estimated .3 million, again second to Widow’s .5 million start when it was available for .99 on Disney+ as well. Historically, the only film to open with over million on Friday and not gross million over the weekend was the first Twilight film back in 2008. The vampire flick and Black Widow have been the only films with million-plus Fridays (out of 71 films) not to cross 0 million in their first five days of release (and subsequently not hit 0 million). Only Shang-Chi has reached that milestone as quickly during the pandemic, in part aided by the Labor Day holiday.Let There Be Carnage s whopping .1 million weekend (at least million higher than some of the best early estimates) would suggest that the Venom sequel could be on a path towards the new ceiling established by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but it is that very film that could stand in its way. Over four straight weeks, not a single film came close to challenging Shang-Chi for the top spot at the box office. Not one other film that opened throughout September opened to million or more. In fact, the three other biggest openings included two HBO Max hybrids (Malignant at .43 million and Cry Macho and .42 million) and musical Dear Evan Hansen, which had the second-best opening of last month with .44 million (and dropped 68% this weekend to .4 million). Shang-Chi had no challengers and word of mouth was good. The latter remains to be seen on the second Venom, but the next three weeks are filled with significant competition in the form of No Time to Die, Halloween Kills, The Last Duel, and Dune. The first Venom film dropped 56.4% in weekend two when faced with First Man, Goosebumps 2, and Bad Times at the El Royale, all of which grossed less than half of Venom’s second week at no. 1. It would take until its fifth weekend before any film other than A Star is Born or David Gordon Green’s Halloween would beat it. Let There Be Carnage is not going to have that luxury. A path will become clearer next week and we’ll see if it beats Shang-Chi’s .7 million second weekend. For now, some other good news: The total earnings of this week s top 10, currently estimated at 6.93 million, make it the 10th-best October weekend for the top 10 films ever. The Top 10 and Beyond: Addams Family 2 Proves Family Films Still Have Box Office Life, While Saints Fails to Draw Mobs of Fans(Photo by © MGM )Opening in second place this weekend was The Addams Family 2, which is in theaters at the same time that it is available on VOD for .99. Remember this is the weekend that Sony initially abandoned its plans for an opener with Hotel Transylvania: Transformia. That film was sold to Amazon; Sony replaced it with Venom Deux and MGM/UA read the tea leaves that family films were still not up to full potential given the lack of vaccine availability for kids in their demographic. Nevertheless, an million weekend is not bad all things considered. The Boss Baby: Family Business opened to million in July and that was simultaneously streaming for free on Peacock. That was also a 68.1% drop from the original’s million opening, while The Addams Family 2 is only about a 40.6% drop from the first Addams Family film s .3 million start. It’s also the second-best opening since the reforming of UA Releasing, ahead of fellow reboots/remakes of Child’s Play (.09 million) and The Hustle ( million). So we’ll chalk this up as a minor victory for the time being.Meanwhile, The Sopranos prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark, become Warner Bros. fourth straight film not to reach million in its opening weekend. WB would have to go back to the end of 2006 to see a run of wide releases – The Fountain (.76 million), Blood Diamond (.64 million), Unaccompanied Minors (.81 million), and We Are Marshall (.11 million) – do as poorly as their HBO Max hybrids Reminiscence (.95 million), Malignant (.43 million), Cry Macho (.42 million), and now Many Saints ( million). Even their Entourage film opened to .37 million in its first day and million in its first three. HBO Max actually feels like a pretty perfect place to watch a story about Tony Soprano’s uncle, but it s hard to believe it wouldn t have at least beaten the opening weekend of the epilogue about Vincent Chase and his cronies were it a theatrical exclusive.Dropping down to third place is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: with its first real test of competition, it fell 54% to million, bringing its total to 6.1 million. After last weekend the film was at 6.2 million and in the realm of the paths of Star Trek Into Darkness (8.7 million final gross) and Brave (7.2 million final). Its million last weekend was also higher than the respective .42 million and .16 million of those films in their fourth weekends. This week it fell slightly behind their .25 million and .04 million fifth weekends. Those films also had just passed 8 million at this time, suggesting that Shang-Chi’s final gross may be closer to 0-5 million than the 0-plus million it was looking like a few weeks ago. Nevertheless, it could still be a very hard number to challenge for 2021’s top grosser. Although Venom’s challenger next week and his arch-nemesis in December are the likely favorites to give it a run for its money. Finally, in limited release, Julia Ducournau’s Palme d’Or-winning Titane grossed 5,000 in 562 theaters. NEON’s release of the film fell below releases of The Card Counter (.03 million / 580 theaters) and their own Pig (0,935 / 552 theaters), each posting per-theater-averages of ,792 and ,759 compared to Titane’s 8 PTA. On the bright side, it is the second-best opening for a foreign-language film in 2021 after last week’s release of India’s Love Story, which opened to 1,000.On the Vine: Daniel Craig Set to Save the World – and Box Office? – One Last Time(Photo by United Artists Releasing)Bond. James Bond. No Time To Die finally opens in theaters after a nearly two-year delay. The 25th film in the Bond series (leaving out a couple of disputed titles) has already grossed an estimated 3 million overseas and hopes to become just the second wide domestic release to pass a half-billion at the global box office, a number that only F9 has reached since 2019. No Time To Die is currently Certified Fresh at 83% on the Tomatometer, behind fellow Daniel Craig outings Casino Royale (94%) and Skyfall (92%) but ahead of Quantum of Solace (64%) and Spectre (63%). Also look out for A24 s creepy black comedy/thriller/drama Lamb, the festival-favorite documentary The Rescue, and Bleecker Street s drama Mass, which is Certified Fresh at 92% and marks writer-director Fran Kranz as a major new talent to watch.

Gates and engage in more historical nonsense. Let’s hope Disney forks over another 0 million so he can finish the trilogy, whether that happens in theaters or on Disney+.4. SEAN BEAN LIVES! (Photo by (c) Touchstone courtesy Everett Collection)We’ve been programmed to accept that Sean Bean always dies in a spectacular fashion (e.g., Goldeneye ouch), and when his Ian Howe doesn’t fall prey to a Templar trap or an ancient catapult in National Treasure, it’s beautifully unexpected. While it would have been appropriate for Gates to let loose a one-liner something like “I’ll treasure this moment” or “Prepare to meet your forefathers” as he sent Howe to an elaborate death, it doesn’t happen. In the end, Howe is simply arrested, which leaves him on the chessboard for future installments. After watching Bean die in (spoilers ahead!) Game of Thrones, Black Death, Equilibrium, Don’t Say a Word, The Island, Patriot Games, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, just to name a few, it’s nice to know one of his fictional characters is still alive. Early scenes between Ben and Ian show us that the two genuinely like each other, and Ian isn’t happy about his sudden heel turn. As the film progresses, Ian turns out to be a suitable antagonist who is always one step behind, but never far. Plus, the more you watch the the movie, the more you begin to like Howe s henchmen, namely Phil, Shaw, Powell, and Shippen, if only because they seem friendly with Ben, and they aren’t completely terrible at being henchmen.5. IT HELPED FILL THE INDIANA JONES VOID(Photo by (c) Touchstone courtesy Everett Collection)Smack dab in between The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and four years before Indiana Jones helped coin the term “nuking the fridge” in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, National Treasure filled a much needed void. The constant travel, puzzle solving, justified thievery, and ancient treasures satiated our thirst for globetrotting adventure; from grounded ships in the Arctic to the reflecting pool in Washington D.C., the frantic pace and constant clues made the most of a proven crowd-pleasing formula.Throw in the fact that Benjamin Franklin Gates, Patrick Gates, and John Adams Gates (Christopher Plummer) are named after American forefathers, and you have a movie that embraces history and isn’t subtle about it. Plus, the 0 million budget, the use of actual landmark locations, and the wonderful production design by Norris Spencer ensured the film would age surprisingly well over time. These types of films don’t really exist anymore, and that’s one of the reasons why we still love it now. Also, we think Indy himself would approve of the way Gates and his crew made sure the treasure was shared with the world, because “it belongs in a museum!”National Treasure was released on November 19, 2004.
Fanny and Alexander (1982) 100% I d like to say that the television version that s longer is better than the version that was in movie theaters. Bergman s my favorite filmmaker, if I had to choose. It s very much a culmination of most of the themes and motifs of his career that appears as a physical personification in the very beginning of the film, similar kinds of ghosts that Bergman explored in the past. He has his love for the theater and puppetry and there s moments of hope and joy, but it also just reminds you that humans have certain demons that they can t ever escape. It s really rich and it touches on so many things about what it is to be human that it s really quite remarkable. And as with every Bergman movie, there s not a moment of bad performance to be found. But I think that the first episode, if you were to watch the TV version, is just Christmas with a family. A long episode of getting to know a family at Christmas. And I was talking with [Home Alone director] Chris Columbus about Christmas in movies and he was explaining how it s just a time of heightened emotions for everyone. So that s a really clever way to learn about this family and all of their dynamics super deeply, by beginning at Christmas. And the first time you watch it, you re kind of like, Where is the story? What is this? This is just Christmas. And then the next episode, the plot begins but you ve gotten to know this family incredibly closely and so then you re just so invested with them through the rest of the film. Also, like The Lighthouse, it has some fart jokes.

Thought it was too late for more Game of Thrones theories? You thought wrong. Check out Kit Harington s latest fan theory debunking, some major Disney+ plans, and more of the week s biggest TV news.TOP STORYKit Harington Debunks Major Game of Thrones Theory(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)One of the biggest deaths of the final season of Game of Thrones came when Arya Stark heroically killed the Night King. Though the internet exploded with the requisite cheering for the pint-size assassin that night, the next day a fan theory bubbled up that implied Jon Snow had whispered to his little sister to go find the villain and take him out. Kit Harington, who played know-nothing Jon Snow, called the theory “crap.”“What, the big man goes and tells the little girl to go and [do it]? No thanks. That s crap,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview about his Emmy-nominated season 8 performance. “She did it all on her own. It had nothing to do with Jon.”He did wish that Jon had a hand in the Night King’s death, though.“I was so happy for Maisie and Arya,” he said, but “I was secretly like, ‘I wanted to do that!’ Especially because I love fighting with Vlad, who also played the White Walker I fought at Hardhome. I ve never seen a better swordsman. But it was a really great twist, and it tied up Maisie s journey in a really beautiful way. Over the seasons, we ve seen her build up these skills to become this hardened assassin, and she uses it all to kill our main antagonist.”As far as Jon Snow s fate at the very end of the series, Harington told the magazine that he thinks his character is living happily with the Wildlings beyond the Wall.“Seeing him go beyond the Wall back to something true, something honest, something pure with these people he was always told he belongs with — the Free Folk — it felt to me like he was finally free, he said.Hilary Duff Is Reviving Lizzie McGuire for a New Disney+ SeriesDisney Channel has a picture-perfect plan for fans of its early 2000s series Lizzie McGuire: A rebooted sequel series with original star Hilary Duff and original creator Terri Minsky. What were the final moments on set like for Daniel Craig as he wrapped his time playing James Bond? Let’s just say, like Bond himself, he was… thirsty. HALLOWEEN KILLS AND THE FOREVER PURGE DELAYED UNTIL 2021(Photo by Ryan Green/©Universal Pictures)The reality of the COVID-19 pandemic and the continuing scheduling delays have made reporting on such release date shifts nearly a non-story each week, but this week, Universal Pictures pushed four of their highest profile horror films back all at once. The reboot of Candyman, which had originally been scheduled to come out last month on June 12th, is now scheduled instead for October 16, 2020. Two other sequels previously scheduled for 2020 have instead been pushed back to dates in 2021: The Forever Purge on July 9, 2021 (one day shy of a year after its original July 10, 2020 date) and Halloween Kills on October 15, 2021. Producer John Carpenter took to Twitter to release this Halloween Kills statement confirming that the 2021 plans include IMAX screens, and also to give us our first teaser trailer for Halloween Kills. This shift also pushes Halloween Ends, which was originally slated to release on the date now occupied by Kills, back another year to October 14, 2022. Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends are both sequels to the 2018 sequel/reboot Halloween (Certified Fresh at 79%), which returned Jamie Lee Curtis to the franchise.8. KRISTEN BELL AND LESLIE JONES TO BE COUNTERFEITING QUEENPINS (Photo by Priscilla Grant, Jason Mendez/Everett Collection)Hollywood remains in quite the transitional period as productions slowly attempt to resume activity during the pandemic. One feature film that is scheduled to start filming in Los Angeles in late 2020 is a caper comedy called Queenpins, inspired by the true story of the largest coupon counterfeit enterprise in U.S. history, led by three women who sold fake coupons that could then be turned in for items that were worth much more money. Queenpins will feature an ensemble cast, including Kristen Bell (Frozen, TV s The Good Place) and Saturday Night Live star Leslie Jones as two of the ringleaders, as well as Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers, The Break-Up) and Paul Water Hauser (I, Tonya, Richard Jewell). Queenpins will be written and directed by the married team of Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly, who made their feature film in 2013 with the independent film Beneath the Harvest Sky (Fresh at 62%), starring Game of Thrones Aidan Gillen ( Littlefinger ).9. STAR WARS ALUMNI TEAMING UP FOR BORDERLAND INDIE THRILLER (Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)As recently as late May, one of the biggest casting news stories was that Cate Blanchett had signed on to star in the video game adaptation Borderlands, based on the popular first-person shooter franchise. Coincidentally (but possibly confusingly), we can also now report that an indie thriller called Borderland (singular versus the plural video game title) is now casting up with stars from a few popular recent films. These stars include John Boyega (Finn from Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker), Felicity Jones (Jyn Erso from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Jack Reynor (Florence Pugh s apathetic boyfriend in Midsommar), and Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen from last year s Queen Slim). Reynor will play an Irish soldier whose pregnant wife is killed by John Boyega s British SAS soldier during a border ambush. Borderland will be directed and written by brothers Tom and Charlie Guard (the latter of whom is also married to Felicity Jones), who made their feature film debut in 2009 with The Uninvited (Rotten at 31%), the poorly received American remake of the South Korean supernatural thriller A Tale of Two Sisters.
(Photo by Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection.)All Joel Schumacher Movies, Ranked by TomatometerYour typical journeyman director deep in the studio system will make movies across plenty of genres, on-time and under-budget, foster some lasting professional relationships, and never make a name for themselves beyond to the most ardent, specific film buffs. Yes, Joel Schumacher worked across multiple genres without a thematic throughline, with studios and actors quick to praise his behind-the-scenes professionalism, but the director also brought enough verve and dynamic color to his films that Schumacher s name, at his creative peak, did become a kind of brand. A calling card of big Hollywood entertainment with style to separate from the rest. This began in earnest in 1987 with the Brat Pack-adjacent The Lost Boys, the stylish horror/comedy that pulled vampires out of cliff-nested castles and into teen parties and suburbia, a popular concept still seen in the likes of True Blood and Twilight. Having made Kiefer Sutherland a star, Schumacher worked with him again on his next film, Flatliners.Schumacher entered his most commercially viable period in the 90s, starting with 1993 s Falling Down, starring Michael Douglas on a particularly bad Los Angeles day, in a film that has been latched onto as a manifesto of urban rage still discussed and referenced now. Schumacher took the reins for 1995 s Batman Forever after Tim Burton and Michael Keaton left the blockbuster franchise. Some inspired casting (Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne, Jim Carrey as The Riddler, and Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face), plenty of wild art direction, a brash soundtrack, and just a touch of camp turned the movie into pop-culture phenomenon. A year later, Schumacher released A Time To Kill at a time when anything Grisham, Crichton, and Clancy was being adapted and making a mint at the box office. (Schumacher had previously turned Grisham s The Client into a movie.)Then came the disastrous Batman Robin, which killed the franchise for nearly a decade. Schumacher took full ownership for the movie s failure, claiming that he had steered too far towards what marketing and merchandising wanted out of a Batman joint. A public bomb of this proportion could ve been a career-ender, but his workmanship and a steady line of stars willing to collaborate time and again meant the next Schumacher film was never far off. He worked twice with Colin Farrell, first in 2000 s Tigerland, which introduced the actor to American audiences, and then in 2003 s Phone Booth, which made Farrell a star. Sutherland, back in the saddle, played the villain. Schumacher can be credited with helping launch Gerard Butler s career in full, when he cast him as lead in 2005 s The Phantom of the Opera. In 2007, Schumacher worked again with Carrey for psychological thriller The Number 23. His final film was 2011 s Trespass, reuniting him with 8MM s Nicolas Cage and Batman Forever s Nicole Kidman. We celebrate his life and career with our guide to every Joel Schumacher film, by Tomatometer.
