Pride Month may be ending in a few days, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to stop celebrating. Rotten Tomatoes asked the cast and creatives of some of our favorite LGBTQ+-centered series — including The L Word creator Ilene Chaiken, Pose creator Steven Canals, Vida creator Tanya Saracho, activist/Pose director and writer Janet Mock, and Pose star Mj Rodriguez — to reveal what their personal favorite LGBTQ+ television shows are, and why. Here’s their curated list so you can keep celebrating LGBTQ+ contributions to pop culture all year long.Like this? It’s the television game-changer of the moment. It’s spectacular in every way. Those two women both as actresses and characters are stunning. Jodie Comer is my new favorite sexy twisted hero villainess. And it’s just – what can I say? The added bonus is Fiona Shaw, who, on the show, is playing this wicked character but she is also just an icon in gay, elevated, acting royalty.Tanya Saracho: Killing Eve is inspired storytelling. I will continue to love it for its complicated, flawed and morally ambiguous protagonists. I choose to disregard [star Sandra] Oh s comments about this not being a lesbian story and will take it for what I think it is: A f ked-up queer tale of love and obsession.Noah’s ArcSteven Canals: Noah s Arc is a really great one. It s one of the few shows I can think of that centers queer black men.Mj Rodriguez: When Noah s Arc came out, that slayed for me. It was the validation. And also there were trans women on that show. Granted, they were featured, or they were guests, or they were background, but they were still there and that s what really made me feel good.American Horror Story 77%Ilene Chaiken: Ryan Murphy delivers for me in American Horror Story. In everything he does he delivers. Nobody tells our stories and portrays us and provokes us in the way he does, but American Horror Story is my favorite because he does genre, and genre gets at us in such a profound way.Vida 100%Janet Mock: I love Vida. I love what Tanya has done with that series. I love how much deeper they go in season 2 — I watched it in a day and a half. I love a half-hour drama. I think that she s doing such important work. I love those actors so much. I love the world that s there. That s literally right over here, right, a little east of us where we re at right now. And so yeah, I love that series and I hope that more people watch it and support it.Pose 98%Tanya Saracho: Pose is necessary television. And it s overdue. It s a beautiful thing to see all those brown and black faces on screen, living their truest lives. Will & Grace Mj Rodriguez: Now granted, there were no trans women on that show at all, but it was still representation of the LGBT community. And I can only relate to it somewhat because I mean, it was an all-white cast.Sense8 86%Ilene Chaiken: Maybe it never found the audience that it should have, although I know it has some very devoted fans. It’s a beautiful work of art, something we don’t often see on television. It works as story, but it works as just ethereal, ephemeral, profound art.Gentleman Jack 90%Tanya Saracho: I m crazy about Gentleman Jack (and that top hat!). I love everything about the show; the aesthetic, the tone, the story — but mainly, Ms. Suranne Jones. She took her character, Anne Lister, through the emotional paces from cheeky breaks of the fourth wall to stirring exploration of what it meant to be queer in a time when that was a viscerally dangerous thing.Orphan Black 93%Ilene Chaiken: Even if there hadn’t been gay and trans clones, I still would’ve said it was a gay show, but it’s just progressive, it’s subversive, it’s brilliant, and also, and really important for me, I have been looking for gay genre shows, or for genre shows that feature gay characters and gay themes forever and ever and Orphan Black finally delivered for me.Orange Is the New Black 90%Mj Rodriguez: Laverne Cox is like my sister, and she was the one who broke down that door and opened the space up for us to come on in and take our craft seriously. One Day at a Time 99%Tanya Saracho: I heart One Day at a Time so much. Elena and Syd s beautiful relationship is poignant and bold and so now. I love how they love. The Rachel Maddow ShowIlene Chaiken: And also Anderson Cooper, but Rachel Maddow in particular. Where else do we look for icons, for just a touchstone to our own rage and hope and truth?

45 Video Game Movies Ranked Worst to BestIt was in 1993 that Hollywood realized the dream of putting a video game movie up on the big screen with Super Mario Bros., and setting the stage for a long legacy of questionable choices, troubled productions, and gamers pixel tears left in their wake. But like the kid who just has to pump in one more quarter to reach for that high score, the studios keep on trying (while the fans just keep on hoping), and we re celebrating that sort of sheer tenacity with this guide to the best video game movies (and plenty of the worst) ranked by Tomatometer! Here, you will find the near-decent (Rampage, Resident Evil), the should ve-been-goods (Assassin s Creed, Warcraft), the ridiculous-but-we-love-thems (Mortal Kombat, Silent Hill), and the ones made by Uwe Boll, who deserves his own category (Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead). We re using a 20-review minimum cutoff for inclusion from theatrical releases only, because it s not just enough to make a questionable movie, critics need to witness the aftermath, too.And in May 2019, Detective Pikachu officially broke the video game curse! Fitting that Nintendo, whose Super Mario Bros. movie started all this trouble, would be the one to end it. And in another surprise 2019 development, the second Angry Birds movie has slingshot the naysayers by racking up plenty of critical praise, toppling Pikachu mere months after its release. Then in 2020, when it didn t seem it had a chili dog s chance in hell, Sonic the Hedgehog to general critics enthusiasm, marking three Fresh video game movies in two years. Monster Hunter at the end of 2020 didn t quite continue the streak. And now we ve added Mortal Kombat! See all the high scores (and lots and lots of the lows) with our guide to 45 video game movies, ranked worst to best!

This week s Ketchup brings you another nice headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as The Suicide Squad, The Eternals, and Halloween Kills. This WEEK S TOP STORYTAIKA WAITITI JUMPING THE GUNN ONTO THE SUICIDE SQUAD IN UNKNOWN ROLE(Photo by Jasin Boland/© Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Last year, Walt Disney Pictures briefly fired director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (if you re wondering why Marvel s not moving forward on that movie faster, that s the reason) over old jokes in poor taste were found on his Twitter feed. James Gunn has since been hired back, but in the meantime, he jumped ship to work for Warner Bros and DC Comics for The Suicide Squad, which will be a soft reboot sequel to the 2016 super villain movie starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie. This week, James Gunn cast one of his frequent collaborators as well as one of Marvel s stars. First up was Nathan Fillion, who previously worked with James Gunn on both Slither and Super, and who also had a cameo voice acting role in the first Guardians of the Galaxy. The biggest surprise, however, came with the news that Taika Waititi will also have a role in The Suicide Squad. In addition to directing Thor: Ragnarok (in which he also voiced the alien Korg), Taika Waititi is also returning to write and direct Thor: Love and Thunder (11/3/2021), which will come out less than three months after The Suicide Squad. James Gunn also this week cast comedian Steve Agee to provide the voice of the monstrous super villain King Shark. Warner Bros has scheduled The Suicide Squad for release on August 6, 2021, which will be five days after the fifth anniversary of the release of Suicide Squad on August 1, 2016.Other Top Headlines1. KIT HARRINGTON TAKING THE BLACK (KNIGHT) AGAIN IN MARVEL S THE ETERNALS(Photo by George Kraychyk/©TriStar Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)One of the big reveals at Disney s D23 this past weekend was the casting of Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman, AKA Marvel s Black Knight, in next year s The Eternals (11/6/2020). Harrington will be joined by Richard Madden, he of Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, as Ikaris. This came along with confirmation that Gemma Chan will costar in The Eternals just one year after she also costarred in Captain Marvel as the Kree warrior Minn-Erva. The inclusion of Black Knight and Minn-Erva in The Eternals is significant because both characters were long-time members of The Avengers from the 1980s to the 1990s. Black Knight actually first joined as the 14th Avenger in 1969, in-between Vision in 1968 and Black Widow in 1973. So if one wants to speculate about a future Avengers movie, they re both possibilities.2. BLACK PANTHER II SNAGS MARVEL S BIGGEST RELEASE DATE FOR THE SUMMER OF 2022(Photo by Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Marvel Studios didn t invent the notion of the weekend closest to May 1st being the best spot to start the summer season (that was arguably the 1999 reboot of The Mummy), but they ve certainly perfected the move. In recent years, that has included Avengers: Age of Ultron (5/1/2015), Captain America: Civil War (5/6/2016), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (5/5/2017), Avengers: Infinity War (4/27/2018), and Avengers: Endgame (4/26/2019), and will include Black Widow (5/1/2020) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (5/7/2020). One of the highly anticipated films that was left out of Marvel s big panel of announcements at SDCC this year was Black Panther II, but we learned last weekend that they were just saving that news for D23, where Marvel revealed that Black Panther II is scheduled for May 6, 2022. No other premise or cast details were confirmed, but presumably, Chadwick Boseman, Martin Freeman, Danai Gurira, and Letitia Wright will all be back.3. BOYHOOD DIRECTOR TO SPEND 20 YEARS FILMING MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG(Photo by Wilson Webb/©Lionsgate/courtesy Everett Collection)As of this writing in 2019, Broadway singer/actor Ben Platt is 25, and actress Beanie Feldstein is 26. But when their new movie comes out, they ll be more like 45 and 46. That s because Platt and Feldstein have both signed to star in a new musical from director Richard Linklater, who famously spent 12 years making the 2014 Academy Award-winning drama Boyhood. That musical will be an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim s 1981 play Merrily We Roll Along, which was itself based on the 1934 play of the same name. Sondheim s play was set across a period from 1957 to 1976, and as with Boyhood, Richard Linklater plans on filming Merrily We Go Along over a 20 year period just like how its plot unfolds. Presuming Merrily We Roll Along is released around 2039 or 2040, Richard Linklater (born 7/30/1960) will be between 78 and 80.4. JAMIE FOXX AND TINA FEY TO STAR IN NEXT YEAR S SECOND PIXAR FILM, SOUL (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)As much of an info dump as San Diego Comic-Con is, Disney s own D23 convention almost matches that. This year, a lot of that went to the upcoming Disney+ streaming app s content, but Disney itself made a few big feature film announcements. We ve known for a while now that Pixar s next film will be Onward (3/6/2020), a modern fantasy starring MCU stars Tom Holland and Chris Pratt. But that s not all for Pixar in 2020: They also have Soul on their schedule for release on June 16, 2020. Pixar revealed at D23 that the stars of Soul will be Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey. Fey will voice a disembodied human soul in the afterlife, with Jamie Foxx voicing a music teacher who appears to kick it just before a big career opportunity (cue the comparisons to Mr. Holland s Opus and also Pixar s Coco). Foxx and Fey will also be joined by the voices of Daveed Diggs (Blindspotting), Questlove (of The Roots and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon), and Phylicia Rashad (TV s The Cosby Show), with Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) collaborating on the film s score.5. PAUL RUDD GROWS UP TO BE ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL IN NEXT YEAR S HALLOWEEN KILLS (Photo by Vertical Entertainment / courtesy Everett Collection)Quite the phenomenon when a future megastar gets their career start in a horrible horror movie. Take, for example, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, the sixth film in the horror franchise, which featured Paul Rudd as Tommy Doyle, one of the kids Laurie Strode was babysitting in the first movie. Jamie Lee Curtis returned as Laurie Strode in last year s hit soft reboot sequel Halloween (which earned over 5 million worldwide), and she s returning for Halloween Kills (10/16/2020) and (possibly) Halloween Ends (10/15/2021), which will soon be filmed back-to-back. Paul Rudd was indeed approached about returning as Tommy Doyle, but due to scheduling conflicts with Ghostbusters 2020 (7/10/2020), Tommy Doyle will instead be played by Anthony Michael Hall. Rudd and Hall may not resemble each other, but if the Halloween slasher franchise now serves as a nostalgia feast, the casting of the costar of 1980s movies like Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, and The Breakfast Club fits that theme perfectly.6. DISNEY ANIMATION S POST-FROZEN II TO BE RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON (Photo by Disney)Disney has had a mystery project scheduled for November 25, 2020 for a while, but it wasn t until last weekend s D23 that Disney revealed that it will be Raya and the Last Dragon. The animated fantasy adventure will be set in a fictional kingdom called Kumandra, which will be inspired by the cultures of Southeast Asia. Raya and the Last Dragon will mark the directorial debuts of Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins, who previously worked on Disney movies like Big Hero 6 and Zootopia. The screenplay is being written by Adele Lim, whose Crazy Rich Asians featured Awkwafina, now also a voice role in Raya. The title character to be voiced by Cassie Steele of TV s Degrassi: The Next Generation.7. EVA LONGORIA TO DIRECT THE FLAMIN HOT CHEETOS MOVIE(Photo by Bauer Martinez Films/courtesy Everett Collection)Fox Searchlight has been moving forward with plans for a movie called Flamin Hot about how the popular brand of Cheetos snack foods came to be. They re hiring Eva Longoria to direct the true story of Richard Montanez, who was a janitor at Frito-Lay when he came up with the Flamin Hot Cheetos concept after noticing that regular Cheetos were not as flavorful as Mexican snacks on the same convenience store shelves.8. HAPPY DEATH DAY DIRECTOR TO BODY SWAP VINCE VAUGHN AND 22-YEAR-OLD KATHRYN NEWTON(Photo by Giles Keyte / © Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)Director Chris Landon is newly available as it appears unlikely that Happy Death Day will receive another sequel after this year s box office disappointment of 2U, which earned just million domestically. For his next film, Landon will cowrite and direct a body swapping thriller. Vince Vaughn will star as a deranged serial killer whose body is taken over by a high school student played by 22-year-old Kathryn Newton, whose previous work includes Paranormal Activity 4 and Detective Pikachu.Like this? It’s estimated that between 75 and 90 percent of films made before 1929 are either lost or only exist in incomplete form. As part of our RT Archives project, we are collecting contemporaneous reviews for those films – see a full list here and read what critics said about them at the time – and shining a spotlight on the stories and people behind them.Recently, our tireless team of review curators were able to dig up new reviews for over 100 films that have been lost or destroyed over time, providing us with new and fascinating insights from contemporaneous critics for motion pictures we ll never get to see again. A fair number of those films featured real people portraying themselves on screen, as the line between documentary and narrative filmmaking wasn t so clearly defined in the earliest days of cinema. Of course, celebrity cameos are pretty common in today s Hollywood, but those celebrities are rarely the actual subjects of the films themselves, unless they re playing caricaturized versions of themselves. With that in mind, we ve put together a list of movies starring real people playing themselves, from a survivor of the Titanic disaster to Babe Ruth to the man who invented steer wrestling. Read on for the full list.Dorothy Gibson, Titanic Survivor  Saved from the Titanic (1912)(Photo by Eclair Film)Although she enjoyed a successful career on stage and later appeared in several films, Dorothy Gibson is probably most famous for surviving the sinking of the Titanic and then starring as herself in the first film to be made about the tragedy. That film, Saved from the Titanic, was a 10-minute short that centered on Gibson, who also co-wrote the script, as she relayed the harrowing experience to her parents and fiancé; she even dressed in the same outfit that she wore the night of the sinking. Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the film, though, was that it was released less than one month after the Titanic sank. None of Gibson s other films survive to this day, with the exception of an adventure-comedy called A Lucky Holdup, which, incidentally, premiered while Gibson was on board the Titanic.Pancho Villa, Mexican Revolutionary  The Life of General Villa (1914)(Photo by Everett Collection)Pancho Villa was, of course, one of the most well-known leaders of the Mexican Revolution, but it may surprise some to learn that he agreed to star in an autobiographical film in the middle of said revolution. Looking to secure funds for his wartime efforts, Villa signed a contract with Mutual Film Corporation, which would later become part of the renowned RKO Pictures, and producer D.W. Griffith (yes, he of Birth of a Nation and Intolerance). The film featured authentic battle footage, which wasn t unusual for newsreel films of the time, but also incorporated staged scenes to fill in the blanks and reportedly took instructions from the production company on how and when to fight those battles. The end result was allegedly so unbelievable that a major portion of the film had to be reshot on studio stages. The story behind these rumors and the others that swirled around other figures of the revolution are fascinating in their own right, but we ll never know what The Life of General Villa really looked like, because it s lost to time.Anna Howard Shaw, Suffragist Your Girl and Mine (1914)(Photo by Library of Congress/Getty Images)Born in England in 1847, Anna Howard Shaw emigrated to the US with her family when she was just four years old. She endured a difficult childhood but went on to live an accomplished life, first as a teacher, then as an ordained minister (the first female Methodist one, at that), and then as a doctor. But her most important achievements were in the women s suffrage movement, when she worked alongside Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton to advocate for the passage of the 19th amendment. In 1914, she would appear as herself the film Your Girl and Mine, a pro-suffrage film showcasing the kinds of problems an average, everyday woman would face in states without voting rights for women. Writing for the early trade publication Moving Picture World, critic James S. McQuade predicted, The near future, I firmly believe, will reveal to those who advocate equal suffrage that moving pictures, as shown in Your Girl and Mine, will accomplish more for the cause than all that eloquent tongues have done since the movement was started. Mary MacLane, Writer  Men Who Have Made Love to Me (1918)(Photo by Perfection Pictures / Essanay Film Manufacturing Company / George Kleine System)There s nothing particularly revolutionary these days about people who air their dirty laundry in public; it seems, in fact, to power a significant chunk of reality entertainment. But back at the turn of the century the last century, that is it was outrageous and controversial especially for a woman to write frankly about her sexual desires and exploits, and that s exactly what Mary MacLane did. Fiercely independent and unusually raw and honest, MacLane s salacious writings and feminist ideas influenced a generation of young women and rankled conservative thinkers of her time, but they also inspired an autobiographical feature film in which she starred as herself. Based on an eponymous series of syndicated articles, the film is comprised of six vignettes depicting MacLane s various love affairs, in between which she smokes and addresses the audience in what is widely considered the earliest example of consistently breaking the fourth wall. It was the only film she made, but no copy of it survives to this day.Arshaluys Aurora Mardiganian, Armenian Genocide Survivor Ravished Armenia (1919)Arshaluys Mardiganian was only 14 years old when the Armenian Genocide in Turkey began in 1915, and as the daughter of a prominent Armenian family, she bore witness to atrocities no teen or human being, for that matter should ever be made to endure. Her father and brother were imprisoned, while she and the rest of her family were deported in a 1,400-mile death march, during which she was sold into slavery more than once. Mardiganian eventually escaped and found her way to the U.S., where a screenwriter named Harvey Gates caught wind of her story and helped her write a memoir of sorts, which then became the basis for the silent film Ravished Armenia. A dramatized chronicle of the horrific events of the Armenian Genocide, the film starred a 17-year-old Mardiganian as herself, requiring her to relive her past trauma in order to shed light on the situation back home. Though Mardiganian later took issue with some of the representations in the film, as well as the pay she earned for it, she became the de facto spokesperson at the time for the victims of the genocide, and the film helped raise million for the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief. In modern times, there is an annual humanitarian award, the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, named in her honor.Ormer Locklear, Stuntman and Daredevil  The Great Air Robbery (1919)(Photo by Everett Collection)Technically speaking, The Great Air Robbery isn t specifically about real-life stuntman/daredevil Ormer Locklear s life, unless he was moonlighting as a U.S. Postal Service pilot caught up in a deadly rivalry with an archnemesis intent on stealing a shipment of gold. That said, the film was only made to showcase Locklear s incredible talents it was originally intended to be the first in a series of films featuring Locklear s aerial stunts so, in a sense, he was just doing what he did best. Though the film was a success, Carl Laemmle and Universal Studios opted not to continue the partnership with Locklear, which led to a lawsuit, and Locklear s next film, The Skywayman, was produced at Fox. During the filming of that movie, Locklear and his co-pilot died in a midair crash, and Fox kept the footage in the final cut, utilizing the tragedy to sell the film. Today, no copy of either The Great Air Robbery or The Skywayman exists.Bill Pickett, Rodeo Cowboy  The Bull-Dogger (1921)It could be argued that The Bull-Dogger is less a narrative feature than a documentary showcase, but it s noteworthy if only because its subject s legacy lives on to this day. The subject in question is Bill Pickett, the son of a former slave and an internationally renowned rodeo cowboy whose unique ability to take a steer down with his bare hands otherwise known as bulldogging caught the eye of a silent filmmaker named Richard Norman. Norman filmed Pickett s exploits and performances for a wider audience, and although some places found the footage offensive on grounds of animal cruelty, Pickett also stood out as an African-American celebrity, and his bulldogging technique evolved into modern steer wrestling, a staple rodeo event. Only a few clips of The Bull-Dogger remain today.Babe Ruth, Baseball Legend Babe Comes Home (1927)In 1927, Babe Ruth had arguably the greatest season by any athlete, ever, in any sport. He hit for a .356 batting average, with 164 RBI and a slugging percentage of .772, and he hit a record-setting 60 home runs, which was more than the totals of 12 other teams. But before the season began, he also took some time to star in a goofy romantic comedy called Babe Comes Home, playing a star baseball player named  Babe Dugan who falls in love with the woman who launders his uniform every week. In other words, while Ruth wasn t technically playing himself, it wasn t much of a stretch from his real-life persona. The film was notable for its use of an experimental and short-lived technological gimmick called Vocafilm, which provided a music and sound effects soundtrack, and according to critics of the era, it wasn t too shabby. Unfortunately, there are no surviving copies of the entire film, and all we have are snippets of footage.Thumbnail images by Everett Collection, Perfection Pictures/Essanay Film Manufacturing Company/George Kleine SystemOn an Apple device? He was art director on Roger Corman s Piranha II: The Spawning and, for one special effect, thought to motivate some live maggots into movement in a prosthetic arm by shocking the prop with a live electrical cable. This helped him get promoted to director on Piranha II, setting in motion a career associated with groundbreaking sci-fi and genre movies.Cameron has long since disavowed his Piranha experience he was only director for less than three weeks and didn t have access to dailies or the editing room paving the way to claim The Terminator as his feature debut, which we admit looks slightly better on a resume. And in this story of time-travelin cyborgs run amuck, we already see one of Cameron s core fascinations: the frequently fatal conflict between man and technology, and the way it cuts off our own humanity (ironically told using state-of-the-art special FX), as seen in later movies like T2: Judgment Day, The Abyss, and Avatar. The success of the first Terminator got him into the major studio system with a gig directing Aliens, which also further cemented his reputation of creating hardened female protagonists.By the 90s, Cameron had the freedom to indulge in his obsessions, including ocean exploration, which produced Best Picture phenom Titanic (only the highest-grossing movie ever at one point) and two documentaries, Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep. He returned to narrative filmmaking with Avatar (only the highest-grossing movie ever at one point), and though he didn t release a movie in the 2010s, it s going to be Avatar that will carry him and us through the 2020s: No less than 4 sequels are planned for that decade. (Photo by ©DreamWorks SKG/Courtesy Everett Collection)Some dragons are big and scary and could definitely kill you with a single exhale — and others, like How to Train Your Dragon s Toothless, are big old sweethearts who just so happen to breathe fire.Toothless (and his human BFF Hiccup) are back for more adventures in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, as they set out on a new journey to protect their dragon utopia of Berk and head to a world they previously though only existed in myths and legends. In honor of Toothless new adventure, Rotten Tomatoes has rounded up pop culture’s most famous — and infamous — dragons. Which is your favorite?
