(We’re going to make this happen.) That’s what we’re deciding in a very special episode of Vs. that’s slowly walking down the stairs armed with warm apple pies, blaring boom boxes, and an occasional break of the fourth wall. How exactly, though, can you compare a decade like the 1980s, which gave us everything from Say Anything… to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off to a decade like the 2010s, with its whip-smart Lady Bird and adventurous Dope? RT Contributing Editor Mark Ellis has a way… four ways in fact. In this episode of Vs. he compares each decade’s high-school movie output based on Tomatometer and Audience Scores, box office performance, memorable moments and characters, and one wild card round to declare which 10-year stretch is the movies’ equivalent to your high school’s Prom King, Valedictorian, or that ultimate hero: The Person Dating a College Guy.On an Apple device? We re also eating several times a day and annoying our pets, but being productive does cross our minds from time to time. Puzzles, long-abandoned books, craft projects, and New Year s resolutions have suddenly jumped to the top of our to-do lists. In the RT comments, many of you have shared how you re catching up on classic films, and we happen to agree that now is the perfect time to increase your classic film viewing.Concentrating on films released before 1980 (both well-known titles and hidden gems), we re producing new guides to essential classic films curated by theme, filmmaker, actor, genre, or style – all for your classic catch-up needs. Want to see our picks for the best French farces? How about a curated list of Fresh picks from Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers, or Billy Wilder? As well as curating watchlists, we re breaking down the films, telling you where you can watch them, and giving you some more recent and/or well-known films the classics might remind you of so you can gauge which movies are right for you. This week in the Classic Film Catch-Up, we re breaking out with heist films. Long cons, strong-arm jobs, and bank heists from professionals and amateurs alike have a long history in film, and that history has given us some of our most celebrated performances and cinematic stories. From Melville and Friedkin to Kubrick and  Soderbergh, many beloved filmmakers have made a mark on the heist flick genre, which came of age in the late 60s and early 70s. In truth, we could make a list solely comprised of films from that time period, and it would still be quite spectacular, but we did include a few from decades prior. With hundreds of titles to choose from, iconic films like The Great Escape, Ocean s Eleven, and lesser-known gems like The Silent Partner failed to earn a spot on our list, but are still definitely worthy of a revisit. For our list below, though, we tried to find diversity within the genre, intermixing confidence schemes with bank jobs and heist comedies with gritty noirs. Each entry is unique, but they work within a shared formula: get a crew, plan the job, and do some nefarious things to take something without anyone finding out. Read below to see our list of classic heist films.Got another favorite heist classic you d add to our list? Have a suggestion for a future theme or classic film to feature in the column? Let us know in the comments. Dog Day Afternoon (1975) 96% What is it? The true-life tale of a man who storms a Brooklyn bank for a day-time robbery, and everything that can go wrong does. Why you need to see it: A frequent choice in our Five Favorite Film series, this dramatic and at times hilarious tale of a bank job gone awry from Sidney Lumet showcases one of Al Pacino s greatest performances. Trying to get enough money for his lover s sex-reassignment surgery, Sonny Wortzik (Pacino) tries to rob a bank, and everything after that goes from bad to worse in what many consider to be one of the best films from the 70s. One of the highest-grossing movies of its year and a critical hit, Dog Day Afternoon was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Actor, which Pacino didn t win. Twenty years later, he would finally take home a golden statuette for The Scent of Woman, but his turn here alongside his The Godfather co-star John Cazale gives us, according to critic Roger Ebert,  one of the most interesting modern movie characters. Check it out for the verbal sparring and Pacino s acting, and its re-watchability is unmatched – you ll find new favorite moments each time you see it.Watch it if you like: Before the Devil Knows You re Dead, A Simple Plan, Reservoir Dogs, Fargo.Where to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes. The Sting (1973) 94% What is it? A young conman attempts to pull off a large-scale confidence scheme against the man who killed his partner, aided by a veteran fraudster. Why you need to see it: It s a movie with Robert Redford and Paul Newman – do you really need anything else? If by chance you do, The Sting is a must-see con film and one of the best examples of a perfectly balanced heist comedy. Redford and Newman s undeniable chemistry is the main draw here, but the mini-course on the language of large-scale confidence schemes serves as a welcome bonus. The original Ocean s Eleven, The Italian Job, and Going in Style all have modern-day remakes that were received to varying critical and commercial success but, this Depression-era masterpiece from George Roy Hill is thought to be inimitable. (Check out the laughable The Sting II if you need further proof). A box-office smash which re-teamed Redford and Newman just four years after the iconic Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, the film took home six more Oscars, including Best Picture.Watch it if you like: Ocean s Eleven, Matchstick Men, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Logan Lucky, American Hustle, Now You See Me.Where to watch: Stream now on the Starz app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes. The French Connection (1971) 98% What is it? A group of narcotics detectives track and try to intercept a large supply of heroin. Why you need to see it: On a list of quintessential 70s cop films, The French Connection would invariably rank high, so we understand if you re surprised to see it here on a list of heist films. Yes, the film follows a group of detectives as they try to get the bad guys, but with the exception of the players (among them leads Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider) all the elements of a heist are there: A group of professionals come together and concoct an elaborate plan to steal something from someone without them knowing – that s a heist movie any way you slice it. Bonnie Clyde is thought to be the first film of the New Hollywood movement – a period in American cinema which ushered in a new crop of dynamic young filmmakers and during which the modern-day blockbuster was born – but The French Connection solidified this new shift in filmmaking and film marketing. Featuring one of the best car chases in the history of film, William Friedkin s cop thriller is gritty, fast-paced, and completely unlike any police drama that came before it. Hackman is electrifying as the short-tempered, boozy bigot Popeye Doyle, and was the rightful winner of the Best Actor prize in 1972, which came alongside four more wins for the film, including Best Picture.Watch it if you like: The Italian Job, Heat, L.A. Confidential, Bullitt, The Untouchables, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.  Where to watch: Stream now on the Starz app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and  iTunes. The Italian Job (1969) 83% What is it? A group of seasoned criminals fresh out of prison races through Italy trying to hijack a shipment of gold. Why you need to see it: If you enjoyed the 2003 remake of The Italian Job, prepare yourself: where that film was serviceable fun, the original film with Michael Caine was a game-changer. Perhaps a bit too camp and brash for its time, the British heist comedy was not universally loved upon release. The New York Times critic Vincent Canby dubbed the film technically sophisticated and emotionally retarded. Putting aside the dated language, the film does lean into action over plot, but that does not diminish the enjoyment of watching Caine and his cockney band of thieves race around Italy in the iconic MINI Coopers. The film is worth a watch for those car chases alone.Watch it if you like: Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Bullitt, Gone in 60 Seconds, Fast Five, Inside Man. Where to watch: Stream now on Amazon Prime Video, The Criterion Channel. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Google Play, and  iTunes. The Killing (1956) 95% What is it? A long-time crook has a simple plan: one last job before he settles down with his lady love. But what was supposed to be a simple job finds the two lovers caught up in a web of deception and murder. Why you need to see it: Though not the first to do it, The Killing married itself to non-linear storytelling in a way that was wholly unique at the time; and it was a commitment that would also turn out to be a bit too revolutionary and decades ahead audience s tastes. Stanley Kubrick s third feature – but his first with a professional crew – was a headache for Paramount from the moment it was shot. Hated by test audiences, the film barely received an American release and was a commercial flop. However, contemporary critics recognized Kubrick s audacious skill with dialogue and camera movement and heralded the film as a masterwork, and its director as one to watch. It has since earned cult-like status, and its influences can be seen in the work of Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, and the Coen brothers. A taut noir, the black-and-white drama commits to the realism of pulling off the perfect job. How the subsequent events unravel for our lead con-artist after the job is done is where we find the film s brilliance.Watch it if you like: Reservoir Dogs, The Killer, Chinatown, Thief, The Getaway, The Layer Cake.Where to watch: Rent or buy on Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Topkapi (1964) 90%(Photo by Everett Collection)What is it? A woman and her ex-lover plot to steal a priceless dagger in Istanbul with the help of a simple-minded small-time crook. Why you need to see it: Jules Dassin s Topkapi is one of the best cinematic clap-backs ever filmed. In 1955, Dassin s Rififi – which won him a Best Director prize at Cannes – set the blueprint for modern-day heist films and soon became the subject of several parodies, including Mario Monicelli s Big Deal on Madonna Street. Tired of being the butt of the joke, Dassin released Topkapi in 1964 and, in doing so, ultimately got the last laugh as his genre send-up dwarfed all previous attempts. The comedy of the bumbling thieves who might just be inept enough to pull off an intricate robbery is only second in hilarity to the scene-stealing performance of Peter Ustinov who plays Simpson, a low-level crook caught in the wake of the larger crime.Watch it if you like: Casino Royale, American Vandal, Dr. Strangelove, The Whole Nine Yards, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.Where to watch: Stream now on Amazon Prime Video. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, and Google Play.Second Breath (1966) 100% (Photo by The Criterion Channel)What is it? After breaking out of prison, a career criminal plans one last job to secure his retirement while a dogged police detective is in hot pursuit. Why you need to see it: The godfather of French New Wave, Jean-Pierre Melville was tenacious when it came to authenticity on screen. From props to accents to his documentary style of filmmaking, his attention to detail and reality is present in every frame of Le Deuxieme Souffle. Melville s commitment would inspire the neorealism of directors François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, and Agnes Varda. Sporting a high body count for its time, Le Deuxieme Souffle was a film that let the gangsters be gangsters. Thrilling, and dripping with suspense and violence, the film gives the audience a constant sense of unease as the characters descend deeper into the French underworld. An intimate epic, according to Martin Scorsese, the film was a key inspiration for his Oscar-nominated Jimmy Hoffa epic The Irishman. Watch it if you like: The Irishman, Miller s Crossing, Road to Perdition, Hell or High Water. Where to watch: Stream now on The Criterion Channel app. Rent or buy on Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.High Sierra (1941) 91%What is it? A seasoned ex-con must lead a group of untried criminals in the robbery of a desert resort. Why you need to see it: The first pairing of several between Humphrey Bogart and director John Huston, High Sierra is a thoughtful bridge between the brash 40s gangster flicks and the minimalistic crime-noirs of the 50s. Huston and Bogart would go on to collaborate on The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and The African Queen; never was the power of Bogart s appeal more on display than when framed by Huston s lens. High Sierra is a heist film that utilizes early noir elements before they were popularized in the 1950s, and it s distinguished by its smart twists as well as Bogart s complex turn as Roy Earle. He is also perfectly complemented by Ida Lupino s portrayal of the temptress gangster s moll.Watch it if you like: The Maltese Falcon, The Fugitive, White Heat, The Town, The Usual Suspects. Where to watch: Stream now on The Criterion Channel app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.

Behind the Zero(Photo by Lionsgate)When superstar YouTuber and world-class dumbass Logan Paul stumbled into the international spotlight last year for disrespecting a dead body he found in Japan’s Suicide Forest, adults of the world, for whom the kid-friendly world of YouTube performers like him is like a bizarre, inscrutable foreign language they do not speak, were once again flummoxed. They wondered how a toxic jock like Paul a quintessential Ugly American barely into his 20s and, as his Japanese misadventures proved, not the savviest character could amass a budding entertainment empire with millions of adoring subscribers. As parents of small, YouTube-loving children like myself can wearily attest, however, quality isn’t exactly an important criteria for the six-and-under set when they log on, looking for something to gaze at for a while. It’s usually enough to find something sufficiently broad to appeal to pre-critical minds desperate for loud noises, bright colors, and kinetic movements to fill their sensation-craving heads.(Photo by Lionsgate)This is where YouTube superstar Fred, as played by young actor Lucas Cruikshank, comes in. The astonishing and, sadly, enduring popularity of this character reveals the generational disconnect at the heart of YouTube stardom. To kids, Fred is a digital-age Pied Piper that small children apparently find endlessly amusing. The three-minute video  Fred Goes Swimming  has been seen over 70 million times. I imagine at least some of those views came from sadists using it as torture to extract information from unwilling sources. To adults, Fred’s nasal, nails-on-a-chalkboard whine is a buzzing, intense, nuclear-power irritant that’s unbearable even in short, manic bursts. Yet someone nevertheless imagined it would be a good idea to extend Fred’s widely and rightfully hated shtick to feature length. Because the small, undiscriminating children who constitute Fred’s disturbingly vast fanbase are not professional film critics, generally, the end result, 2010’s Fred: The Movie, earned the dreaded Zero on Rotten Tomatoes. Here’s a quick tip: as fellow The Zeros entry Garbage Pail Kids: The Movie illustrates all too vividly, if something has to tell you that it’s a movie in its title, it’s probably not much of a movie. Fred: the Movie is no exception, but it’s also a failure and an embarrassment on every other level as well. The Zero(Photo by Lionsgate)The film opens with a flurry of Fred’s patented fourth-wall-breaking, squealing-directly-at-the-audience shenanigans as he introduces us to his world, which is suffused with loneliness and despair at a level seldom seen outside Todd Solondz films. Understandably friendless high schooler Fred spends his days stalking crush Judy (visibly embarrassed British pop star Pixie Lott), getting relentlessly bullied at school, pining for the return of a dad who abandoned him but who appears in fantasies as a muscle-bound, endlessly aggressive John Cena (who seems to be playing himself, although that’s never established explicitly), and doting on a sloppy, alcoholic mother (Saturday Night Live’s Siobhan Fallon) who is perpetually hungover, bleary-eyed, and in need of a nap after another regrettable, drunken one night stand. The film centers on its protagonist s Quixotic attempts to win the heart of his crush by finding a way for them to sing together, a process that mostly involves Fred screaming semi-coherently while talking compulsively to a camera that he rightfully treats as his only friend.Fred: The Movie deviates so dramatically from the template of even the flimsiest, most perfunctory children’s movies that it threatens at times to devolve into an avant-garde stream of consciousness. It doesn’t feel like we’re being entertained by an exuberant, if divisive, goofball. Instead, it feels like we’re being given a window into the tortured psyche and feverish, myopic imagination of someone genuinely unhinged. This isn’t a geek’s fun adventure to track down the girl of his dreams; it s a nervous breakdown in cinematic form, a waking nightmare from which Fred can never escape.Fred seems incapable of processing reality. When Judy and her parents move, he thinks she’s been kidnapped by Asians. When a man talks to him in Spanish, he assumes the stranger is a space alien and that he’s gone insane and is no longer able to understand human language. Every misunderstanding sparks yet another helium-pitched tantrum that’s drawn out sadistically to get this baby just barely to feature length.(Photo by Lionsgate)As played by Cruickshank, Fred’s baseline is screaming, writhing, look-at-me hysteria. There’s no way that could be sustainable over the course of a feature film. It’s not even sustainable over the course of three minutes.Nevertheless, the filmmakers assume audiences won t tire of Fred yelling at the top of his lungs about whatever he’s freaking out about at any given moment. The character’s popularity on YouTube unfortunately backs up that assertion when, in fact, Fred’s obnoxiousness leaves you pining for supporting characters that might provide even the briefest respite from the titular abomination. As if to acknowledge that even Cruickshank himself and the target audience for Fred: The Movie will grow weary of Fred, Cruickshank plays a dual role as a vaguely metal-head burnout named Derf, who’s more appealing and less annoying than Fred pretty much by default. Fred is so insufferable that he not only requires a strong comic foil, but an entire world of characters who are not him, just to be bearable.Fred: The Movie isn’t completely worthless, though. There’s a germ of a good idea in the weird fantasy sequences involving John Cena. It’s the only time the film’s half-assed surrealism and lazy absurdity pays off. The wrestling superstar commits to this silliness, and to incongruous bursts of paternal concern, with a deadpan commitment that foreshadows his unexpected evolution into a sought-after comic actor later in the decade. The movie would be easier to take if it had any underlying sympathy for its protagonist. But it sure feels like the film itself would shove Fred in a locker, give him a wedgie, and subject him to all manner of good-natured and not-so-good-natured bullying if it had an opportunity to. Fred: The Movie is a weirdly sour, misanthropic endeavor that takes unseemly delight in piling one humiliation after another onto its obnoxious protagonist.(Photo by Lionsgate)The movie really hits a nadir when Fred finally makes it to Judy’s party and, after being humiliated by bullies in front of his mocking classmates, proceeds to vomit profusely on Judy’s chest before fleei

So, naturally, there are reports of two other Disney properties set in this world. In December 2019, The Hollywood Reporter noted that plans were in the works for a spin-off film centered on Billy Magnussen s scene-stealing Prince Anders that would air on Disney+. This angered some fans, who took issue with Disney which has long struggled with inclusion and diversity in its films giving a whole movie to a minor white character from one of its few IPs set around a person of color. A few months later, Variety reported that Disney was also planning a live-action sequel to Aladdin. The hope was to bring back Will Smith, who played the wish-granting genie in the 2019 film, as well as some other stars. All Night LongDirector: TBDCast: TBDVariety reported in June 2020 that Disney was developing a jukebox musical film based on the music of Lionel Richie a la the successful Mamma Mia! stage and screen productions that rely on ABBA music. It Boasts a More Diverse Cast(Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)The first Gossip Girl brought up plenty of important issues, such as consent and cyberbullying. But almost all of its leads were white and almost no one was queer (Ed Westwick s Chuck Bass admittance that he s kissed guys aside). Connor Paolo’s Eric van der Woodsen — the younger brother of Blake Lively’s Serena — comes out to Chuck before his family because he knows Chuck won t judge him (their mom, Kelly Rutherford s Lily, did have a hard time with the news). The actors who play the kids at the center of the story in the new version come from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds. Lead by Jordan Alexander’s Julien Calloway, they include Emily Alyn Lind’s icy bookworm Audrey Hope; Eli Brown’s white, liberal and guilted Otto Obie Bergmann IV; Thomas Doherty’s party-loving Max Wolfe; Evan Mock’s pretty but sometimes slow-on-the-uptake Akeno Aki Menzies; Zión Moreno’s master of the beauty contour Luna La; and Savannah Smith s burgeoning publicist Monet de Haan. In the story s main season 1 plot point, Whitney Peak’s new girl, Zoya Lott, will infiltrate this group.(Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)Many, like Max and Monet, are openly queer. Max also has openly queer parents, played by John Benjamin Hickey and Todd Almond — as opposed to Leighton Meester’s Blair Waldorf, whose dad Harold (John Shea) was closeted until he left his wife for another man. Any show that you work on is its chance to show how you, yourself, have grown and changed and learned, Joshua Safran, the creator of the new Gossip Girl who also wrote on the original series, told Rotten Tomatoes.Safran, who is openly gay, employed several queer writers and there were many talks about sexuality — both their experiences with it and how it s seen today. It was important to not make it a story worthy of shame or guilt. Eric s sexuality was weaponized by Gossip Girl. And that definitely would never happen now, he said.(Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)Conversely, in this iteration of the show, Aki begins to question his sexuality. We discussed the idea that most television shows these days, posit that it s easy to come out in this world, Safran said. And I think a lot of the world believes that that because the queer community has more rights than we ve ever had before, even if we still don t have all the rights that we should have. For Aki, it s a multiple-season journey for him to gain comfort and clarity about sexuality, Safran said.2. Activism and Influencer Culture Are Main Topics (Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)Meester s Blair, Lively s Serena and other characters from the original series mostly took their wealth for granted. They took private jets, rode in limos and basically schemed and harassed each other until they became adults with jobs and amassed more wealth. So did their parents. When Nate Archibald s (Chace Crawford) family fortune was diminishing, his parents plotted ways to find new investments. The latest installment discusses generational wealth and inherent privilege — which reflects upon the conversations many actual people are having after the coronavirus pandemic and movements like Black Lives Matter brought these topics to the mainstream. Obie supports those picketing his family s real estate development by bringing them donuts and volunteers for a non-profit. He and Zoya bond over discussions of classism. Monet and Luna tell Julian to get over her ex in a conversation that dissects the media s history of bulling newly single female celebrities that includes the line f-k the patriarchy. If you re on Tik Tok, if you are on Instagram, if you spend time actually looking at what s out there, you ll see how socially conscious young people are these days, Safran said, and it doesn t matter whether they are what their, sort of, economic arena that there is, they actually are all talking about it in a way that we definitely didn t talk about it when I was their age. (Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)The scripts were written pre-COVID and before the Black Lives Matter uprisings and similar events from last year, but Safran said the writers did use the time when production was shut down to fine-tune the scripts. In one episode, Obi and Zoya talk about being at a protest and they actually both have a framework to talk about, it s not just like an ideological discussion. It was also unclear how well the original crop of kids were known outside of their Manhattan bubble (and with some folks they met in Los Angeles, Paris, or the Hamptons). They weren t like Paris and Nicky Hilton, who were paparazzi fodder even before one of them got her own reality show. In the current world of being Internet famous versus actually famous and what that means for your brand, the show also discusses influencer culture. Jordan is popular, in part, because she s the face of a blue-checked Instagram account that s largely backed by Luna and Monet.(Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)In a side-eye of a casting choice, Gossip Girl 2.0 also employs former child fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson — but as Kate Keller, an adult teacher at the school with an unhealthy interest in her students. Mock is also a celebrity skateboarder with his own strong social media following (including Safran, who wrote this part for him because he s a fan). However, neither of these two were cast because they have a strong social media following. With Mock, Safran wanted to write about the Murdochs and Wendi Deng and base something on that relationship, he said, adding that his casting director, Cassandra Kulukundis, recommended Gevinson and noting that Tavi s Tavi-ness is what makes Kate so great. 3. Storylines and Dialogue Are More R-Rated(Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)There was plenty of parental pearl-clutching when the first Gossip Girl premiered and promised sex and more on primetime TV. The brilliant marketing minds at The CW and studio Warner Bros. turned these into campaigns with lines like OMFG or (to meet FCC and broadcast standards) simply OMG. Now airing on a paid streaming service and free from these constraints, the new Gossip Girl celebrates with cursing, nudity, and sex acts that aren t PG (and aren t appropriate for the youngest of the Gen Z demographic). A storyline sure to put the Parents Television Council on red alert involves cruising in a bathhouse.Safran noted that the show did have an intimacy coordinator on set and that we never wanted a sex scene to be gratuitous; it always was character-based. An example: in the third season, Aki receives oral stimulation from his girlfriend, Audrey. But Safran said this is a story point. It s actually a sex act to show a sex act. The couple also have a conversation in the first episode about fantasizing during intercourse, which Safran said is a scene that s about having a partner that doesn t feel like they should have any ownership of you; that allows you to experience pleasure the way you want to experience it. (Photo by HBO Max)Doherty s Max is open about his recreational drug use (he takes Xanax at school, for example). But Safran said that the character also talks very clearly about how he s very strong in his boundaries. He only does one line; one drink; one pill. This is the antithesis of Westwick s Chuck, Safran said because that character will go as hard and far on anything. Max actually knows his boundaries and sticks within them until an event in the third episode takes him to a dark place. In an interesting twist, the new episodes of Gossip Girl will air on The CW after they first air on HBO Max. It will be interesting to see what kind of editing occurs.4. Gossip Girl Sounds the Same (Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max) But her range has increased.Although the face of the titular narrator and chronicler(s) of all of these escapades still remains a mystery to her targets, readers in both series have decided that she sounds like Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell. There was never a question as to whether the new show would keep Bell around. Safran said that if she didn t want to do it, I don t know if we would have done it. However, her monologue has shifted for this digital age. She no longer addresses just the Upper East Siders, and she s no longer solely focused on Manhattan. With WiFi connections everywhere, (presumably only private school) kids in all the boroughs now have targets on their backs because, Safran said, the new account will also include tips about kids at other schools.Perhaps more important: she no longer talks about the scandalous lives of these people. Safran changed it to lies because she points out the fact that it s the change of the show: It s that social media allows you to get a positive version of yourself. 5. Who She Is Isn t a Secret(Photo by Karolina Wojtasik / HBO Max)The first Gossip Girl dragged out the reveal of who was behind the mysterious posts until the final episode when it was revealed that it was Penn Badgley s Dan Humphrey. In Safran s version, the reveal is quite obvious early on and it s not a usual suspect. The first time around, the audience didn t get to partake in watching Dan be the Gossip Girl and do all the things that he was doing, Safran said. If you went back and sort of re-edited the show to see him posting everything, you d see sort of this much more morally complex, dark antihero. He adds that now that you can actually watch what it means to be Gossip Girl and, sort of, the choices you have to make, the things you do that are complicated and morally suspect, but you re doing it for the right reasons — or so you re telling yourself — that s a fresh take on the story. And it s also something that really make the audience feel complicit in Gossip Girl s journey in a way that they weren t allowed to be, by design, the first time around with it. Gossip Girl premieres on Thursday, July 8 on HBO Max and debuts the next night at 8/7c on The CW.On an Apple device? The Holiday Movie Season is here (hooray!), and it s not off to a good start (boo!). But save your panic, because this is still the season when The Rise of Skywalker, Frozen II, and a new Jumanji are going to make about a billion-and-a-half alone domestically. This weekend, despite four new releases, gives us a Top Ten that isn t even going to cross 0 million. Three of those releases weren t expected to set the box office on fire, but the numbers that the new Terminator film put up is likely to make Paramount a little nervous as they stare down their second big-budget sci-fi misfire in a row.King of the Crop: Terminator: Dark Fate is Tops, but the Bar is Low(Photo by Paramount Pictures)The Terminator series has, without question, been waning in popularity over the years. James Cameron and Linda Hamilton left after the second film. Arnold Schwarzenegger left after the third. The global sensation that was Terminator 2: Judgment Day remains one of the great action films of all-time. 12 years later, Arnold gave it another spin with Rise of the Machines, which opened to a healthy million and grossed over 0 million domestically. (T2 would amount to about 6 million in ticket sales today.) The reboot of Terminator: Salvation in 2009 with Christian Bale and Sam Worthington opened to .5 million and finished with 5 million. Then, in 2015, Terminator: Genisys opened to .1 million from Weds-to-Fri or million from Fri-to-Sun and then failed to reach million stateside. Now, 35 years after Cameron’s The Terminator premiered and four years since Cameron endorsed Genisys as the “real” Terminator 3, we now have Terminator: Dark Fate being sold to audiences as the “real” Terminator 3. And audiences are not buying. A million opening is well below the low-40s projections we’ve been hearing for weeks, and it comes out to only a ,097 per-theater-average. (T3 T4 were each over ,000.) Critically, the film is holding steady at 69% on the Tomatometer (the same number for the real “real” Terminator 3; the last positively-scored film in the series.) But nobody at Paramount can be thrilled with the dollar figure, given a 5 million budget, especially coming right after the failure of Ang Lee’s Gemini Man, which has grossed just 5 million worldwide to date on a 8 million budget.Consider that only four films have ever opened in November to a PTA under ,500 and grossed over 0 million, and all four were animated – The Polar Express (2.77 million), Bolt (4.05), The Princess and the Frog (4.04), and Rise of the Guardians (3.41). That is bad news for a film that is in the same boat as Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and needs over a half-billion dollars before we come even close to talking profit. Disney’s film only just crossed 0 million worldwide on Thursday. Genisys, the highest-grossing international Terminator to date, made 0 million and squeaked out a tiny profit. But Dark Fate may be living up to its name as it has grossed just million total overseas so far.Fresh Surprise: Focus Features Earns Another Solid Debut with HarrietRyan FujitaniSpeaking of per-theater averages, Focus Features is having a bit of a moment. Downton Abbey has grossed over million and has become their highest-grossing domestic title ever. This weekend, Kasi Lemmons’ Harriet opened to million and notches another top ten finish in Focus’ record books. While not a giant number, Harriet’s ,828 per-theater-average is the sixth best ever for Focus when they launch a film in over 2,000 theaters. It ranks behind The Strangers, Insidious: Chapter 3, Coraline, Burn After Reading, and London Has Fallen, and is now ahead of Atomic Blonde, The Forest, and The Boxtrolls. A pair of Jet Li films (Unleashed and Fearless) represent the low bar of Focus’ films opening to million or higher, as each grossed .53 and .63 million, respectively. The Forest is their only release to open over million and fail to gross at least million.Rotten Returns: Motherless Brooklyn and Arctic Dogs Flop Spectacularly(Photo by Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures)The two remaining new releases are downright Goldfinchian. Edward Norton’s Motherless Brooklyn, also released by Warner Bros., cost million and grossed just .6 million. That is just a ,682 per-theater-average in 1,342 venues. That is comparable to STX’s The Best of Enemies from April, which had a ,608 average in 1,705 theaters and finished with just .2 million. Norton said that he cashed in every favor in Hollywood to get this film made, so there may be a lot of Italian Jobs in his future. Then on the animated front, Missing Link can rest easy that it no longer has the weakest opening of the year. That now belongs to the -million budgeted Arctic Dogs from Entertainment Studios. Its .1 million start is the lowest for an animated film released in over 2,000 theaters since Disney’s Teacher’s Pet (.46 million) back in 2004. That start is also the lowest ever for one released in over 3,000 theaters, replacing 2015’s Strange Magic, which opened to .5 million and finished with just .4 million. Arctic Dogs is now destined to join a list of animated films in 2,000+ theaters to gross less than million that includes Ratchet Clank, Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, Rock Dog, Doogal, The Wild Life, Early Man, and Teacher’s Pet.The Top 10 And Beyond: Joker and Maleficent Hang on to Second and Third(Photo by Niko Tavernise/© 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Joker fell back to second place this week and is now just shy of 0 million domestic. It has become the 59th film in history to cross the 0 million line and is approaching the list of the 50 highest-grossing films of all time. At 9 million, Joker is ahead of where DC’s Suicide Squad was on Day 31 (7.32 million) and beat its fifth weekend .90-to-.91 million. That should fill in at least another -30 million as Todd Phillips film is headed past 5 million. At 4 million worldwide, even without another international dollar, Joker is going to join this list of the Top 50 grossers of all-time.The aforementioned Maleficent: Mistress of Evil earned another .1 million this weekend for a total of million domestic. That may be the 15th best total for an October release after 17 days and the 14th best third weekend, but it is still well in the red. It has a chance to reach 0 million domestic but even with another 8 million worldwide (which it has now) it is still about 0 million away from talking profit. United Artists Releasing’s The Addams Family, however, is headed exactly there. With another .4 million, the movie has passed 0 million globally and it is all IHOP gravy from there.Neon continues to make the most out of Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (Certified Fresh at 99%). They expanded the film into 461 theaters and it grossed .6 million. That puts it in the vicinity of The Favourite, which moved into 441 theaters in weekend four and grossed .605 million, as well as Birdman, which was in 460 theaters and made .31 million. Both films from Fox Searchlight went on to become Best Picture nominees and grossed .36 and .34 million, respectively. Parasite’s total stands at .5 million.(Photo by Fox Searchlight Pictures)Speaking of which, the Fox specialty division now under Disney has Jojo Rabbit. Taika Waititi’s film was expanded in 256 theaters this weekend and grossed .4 million. That is also in the vicinity of Birdman’s third weekend (.39 million in 231 theaters) but also a little behind Searchlight’s (500) Days of Summer (.77 million in 266 theaters) and A24’s Lady Bird (.51 million in 244 theaters.) Those three films grossed between -49 million with a pair bolstered by their Oscar campaign. Still, if they can keep up interest and get the film to around million, that will be a solid victory. Its total is currently .2 million. Finally there is The Lighthouse (Certified Fresh at 92%) which A24 expanded again into 978 theaters, but fell back from last week’s Top Ten gross of .02 million back to million. That’s a gross on par with 2017’s The Beguiled (.06 million in 941 theaters) just as it was last week suggesting a final total around that film’s .7 million is in the cards for Robert Eggers’ follow-up to The Witch. This Time Last Year: Bohemian Rhapsody Destroys the CompetitionThree new films led the box office but only one turned into a phenomenon. Bohemian Rhapsody began its run towards the Oscars and history with a million opening, more than the next three films combined. They included the Disney bust, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (.35 million), Tyler Perry’s Nobody’s Fool (.74 million) and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born ( million) which passed 5 million this weekend. David Gordon Green’s Halloween also passed 0 million in fifth place. The biggest per-theater-average of the week went to Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased (,411 in 5 theaters). The Top Ten films grossed 9.38 million and averaged 57.2% on the Tomatometer, while this year’s Top Ten grossed an estimated .3 Million and averaged 51.5% with critics. On the Vine: Heeeere s Ewan! The Holiday Movie Season is undeniably frontloaded this year, with everyone trying to get their piece of the pie before Frozen II and The Rise of Skywalker dominate. The favorite going into next week is Mike Flanagan’s two-and-a-half-hour adaptation of Stephen King’s sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep, with Ewan McGregor. Roland Emmerich is back to blow things up with a real-life war story in Midway. For the romance fans out there, Paul Feig is teaming up Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding in Last Christmas and for families looking for an amuse-bouche before Anna Elsa, John Cena plays a babysitting fireman in Playing with Fire. Also in limited release is Shia LaBeouf’s acclaimed autobiographical story of his relationship with his troubled father in Honey Boy.The Full Top 10: November 1-3Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) 70% – million ( million total)Joker (2019) 68% – .9 million (9.6 million total)Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) 39% – .18 million (.3 million total)Harriet (2019) 73% – million ( million total)The Addams Family (2019) 45% – .5 million (.3 million total)Zombieland: Double Tap (2019) 68% – .35 million (.3 million total)Countdown (2019) 26% – .85 million (.77 million total)Black and Blue (2019) 52% – .1 million (.44 million total)Motherless Brooklyn (2019) 64% – .65 million (.65 million total)Arctic Dogs (2019) 12% – .1 million (.1 million total)

亚博网赌安全有保障的 (Photo by Marvel Studios)After so much speculation, actor-endorsed blind alleys, and examinations of the kitchen sets, WandaVision drew to a close the only way it could. And while that may leave some hoping for certain cameos disappointed, the lingering questions will continue to fuel our speculation about the overall Phase 4 story for sometime. WandaVision may have seen its series finale, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues. Let s take a look at the program s contributions to the MCU s ongoing tale.Spoiler Alert: This article reveals details from WandaVision episode 9 “The Series Finale.” Stop here if you have not watched the episode. The Scarlet Witch Was Foretold in The Darkhold — or Was The Darkhold Waiting for a Victim?(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/Marvel Studios)Suggesting the book in Agatha s (Kathryn Hahn) basement was The Darkhold may be our only correct guess during the series, but we ll take it. The book is an immensely powerful tome, as we previously discussed, and a key object for any of Marvel s magic users to obtain. But Agatha added an interesting wrinkle by telling Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) the Scarlet Witch has a whole page devoted to her. It declares she will end the world. The series seems to agree with The Darkhold as Wanda s powers grew exponentially this week and looked quite destructive. Then there s Wanda s style as the Scarlet Witch. While we re sure fans are happy to finally see her with a costume inspired by the late, great Jack Kirby — seriously, we love Kirby s penchant for thrilling headgear — it looks far more like a villain s get-up than that of an Avenger. But, perhaps, that is the point. If Wanda s abilities are as dangerous as The Darkhold suggests, then Wanda still has quite a struggle ahead of her to combat the more impulsive and destructive aspects of her soul. Look at the way she initially strangled the Westview residents when they confronted her. That was instinct. And though Wanda released them and removed the Hex, the final shot of her reading The Darkhold sure feels like a clear indication that she will be Doctor Strange s (Benedict Cumberbatch) opponent in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Or, at least, he ll have to battle the Scarlet Witch even as Wanda fights against her from inside.Maybe we ll even get a recreation of The Patty Duke Show during the film. Now that The Darkhold is an artifact in the MCU, it still leaves us wondering about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and its role in that series. Considering that series firmly established the book corrupts all who read it, will it be the true source of the Scarlet Witch s desire to end all things? Was It Ralph All Along?(Photo by Marvel Studios - episode 105)Though WandaVision s plot, and Wanda s powerset, always seemed like a great opportunity to introduce the Mutants into the MCU — Wanda s ties to the X-Men are almost as strong as her association with the Avengers — the hoped for moment was dispelled once Monica (Teyonah Parris) looked at a Water and Power statement addressed to one Ralph Boehner (Evan Peters) and one of his headshots. The fake Pietro was an actor all along! He was also Agnes s never-seen husband Ralph. Honestly, it s a nice tying of the bow as any other explanation for the guy (short of another reality s Pietro Maximoff) would require a lot of screentime. But, of course, it means no X-Men related revelations occurred in the series as a whole. And in the last month, speculation about certain cameos ran rampant. We participated, of course, and until we saw Wanda s father, Olek (Daniyar), last week we started to wonder if, perhaps, Ian McKellan would appear as Magneto at the last second just for Wanda to ask Papa? as the screen turned to black.Such a scene is still possible in some other project, of course.Unfortunately, much of the cameo game turned out to be a joke on the part of Paul Bettany, who admitted earlier this week that he was referring to himself as The Vision (more on that in moment) and not some truly earth-shattering special appearance.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Which leads to a question: Is WandaVision lesser for not having that shocking cameo? We ve striven to let the show s text guide us in our ponderings — even when it led us away from the Agatha Harkness fan theory. And while we always suggested Wanda s powers could give us the X-Men — and used the Kick-Ass joke as evidence — we re not exactly sad they didn t appear. The one thing we ve definitely held onto was Wanda s grief as the reason for the Westview Anomaly. And though the show ended on a more melancholy note than we expected, we re satisfied with the resolution to the mystery presented in the first three episodes. Those expecting Mephisto may not be so satisfied. But hope for the Devil springs eternal and Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne) shouts in the last moments of the end-credit stinger should fuel the further possibility of his eventual arrival. With The Darkhold, the Dark Dimension, and a Mutliverse of madness in play, he is — like Thanos — inevitable. But he may, ultimately, have nothing to do with the twins continued existence.Vision vs. The Vision: Which Is Which?(Photo by Marvel Studios)As in the comics, the use of the definite article in regard to Vision (Bettany) is inconsistent. To be sure, he is often addressed as The Vision on comic book covers and in stories, but characters just as often drop the as he becomes more than a title — an interchangeability he shares with the Batman, oddly enough. But in the program s final cast list, it credits Bettany as both both Vision and The Vision, using that grammatical option as a way to differentiate the Vis we grew to love over the course of the series and the reanimated corpse of the original synthezoid. And we re here for it because it also speaks to the underlying conflict in their battle: the authenticity of Visions.Indeed, after their thrilling fight, they have an equally thrilling conversation about who is The Vision really is — leading to, we suspect, the proper resurrection of the true Vision. The Vision s mention of having been J.A.R.V.I.S., the AI in Tony Stark s early Iron Man suits, seems to indicate his memories, self-awareness, and autonomy are again intact. But the fact their argument ends with them both truly being Vision and not The Vision (or is that vice versa?) also indicates The Vision will need to continue soul-searching before he can obtain his true colors.Or, perhaps, that piece of the Mind Stone residing in Wanda will someday lead to The Vision becoming whole. In the meantime, we definitely love the elegant wordplay in differentiating Vision from The Vision. It s definitely better than our pitch from last week: New Vision and Vision s Corpse. All that said, we love for both versions of the character to merge some day. Well, presuming Vis didn t download his memories into The Vision already. Will Monica Rambeau Become Director of S.W.O.R.D. or Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.?(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/Marvel Studios - episode 105)While it may have been the briefest resolution in the series, we were glad to see Dr. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) trap S.W.O.R.D. director Hayward (Josh Stamberg) so he could be taken into FBI custody. Although, we admit it would ve been nice to see him get a more just dessert — a la Agatha becoming Agnes again.Nevertheless, it puts Monica in a prime position to become director of S.W.O.R.D. But considering all that she s learned about the organization in the last week, would she want the job? The fact she s still wearing a S.W.O.R.D. shirt is a visual clue that it is indeed possible and, clearly, she could do good work there. But there is another tempting offer on the table.(Photo by Marvel Studios - Captain Marvel)In what has to be our first glimpse of Secret Invasion, a Skrull operative spirits Monica away from the scene of Hayward s crime to tell her an old friend of her mother wants to talk. In space. Now, there are two people who could be Maria Rambeau s old friend: Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Nicholas J. Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). In terms of Marvel Studios production chronology, we ll next see Monica in the Captain Marvel sequel, but we re going to assume Fury has invited Monica to the orbital staging platform glimpsed at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Which, of course, only leads to more questions about Fury. For one thing: How long has that platform been there? Considering he was erased during the Blip, he could not have put this thing together in just a few weeks. That suggests it s been there for a while and, perhaps, what he was working on before he turned to dust in 2019. But the Skrull operative leads to a new possibility — is the outpost even his? Perhaps the Skrulls put it there as part of their decades-long secret invasion.Or, possibly, the platform is a next generation S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier capable of trans-atmospheric travel. Although Fury seemingly washed his hands of the agency at the end of Captain America: The Winter Solider — or left it in Agent Coulson s (Clark Gregg) capable hands if you accept Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as canon — we doubt he d truly let it wither away no matter how disgraced Hydra left it or how many of its secrets Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) exposed. If that is the case, it leaves Monica with an intriguing choice: lead S.W.O.R.D or join S.H.I.E.L.D. Granted, we re presuming a lot about both organizations — like Fury having no stake in S.W.O.R.D. — and Monica s interest in them. One thing is clear though from what we know of her so far: an invitation into space is something she cannot refuse. And while her powers are still mysterious — is she a being of pure light now? — we have no doubt the next time we see her, it will be out among the stars. What s Next? Will Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Provide Answers?(Photo by Marvel Studios)The 20th century television sitcoms Wanda loved and emulated within the Hex took great pains to restore the status quo at the end of any given episode. On Bewtiched, Sam s magic remained hidden and Darren stayed employed. The Bradys always found family unity and their housekeeper, Alice, always found the right quip. But WandaVision eschews that tendency — and, perhaps, Wanda s greatest wish — for such tidy resolutions.Although we now know Agatha s main objective was to steal Wanda s powers because she was undeserving, she is now imprisoned as nosey neighbor Agnes. It is unclear if she will continue to live in Westview with poor Ralph or in some sort of stasis near Wanda s Sokovian cabin. And though it feels like a fitting punishment, is it really Wanda s to dole out? She evaded any accounting for her own transgressions, after all. And while she did apologize to Monica, it feels incomplete without one of the townspeople offering some sort of absolution. Then consider what Westview becomes without the Hex: dilapidated houses and a nearly abandoned downtown. It was on the brink of economic collapse before Wanda got there. And yet, the obvious pain its citizens were in, compounded by Wanda inadvertently forcing them to experience her own, means her cosmetic enhancements came at a terrible cost and further cement her as a villain. Nevertheless, Wanda is also the protagonist and by the grammar of the shows she idolized, she should be able to at least restore Westview to some prosperity as reparation. The fact she cannot is an interesting counter to the world she tried to make for herself. And in removing the Hex, she sacrificed the handful of things which brought her some joy in the weeks since the battle with Thanos.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Of course, trying to weigh that out leads back to the question of authenticity Vision and The Vision confronted. Does the pain she unleashed to create a false reality negate the grief she was in? Whose pain is the pain? That ambiguity, and the haunting foreshadowing of the Scarlet Witch as an extinction-level event, is something we ll have to live with until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness picks up the thread. But as we were always sympathetic to Wanda s grief, we hope the character finds the help she needs and comes back from the brink. In the meantime, we ll congratulate WandaVision for using the grammar of television and the language of sitcoms to present these ideas to us. Also, we ll thank them for eight weeks of wild theories, endless possibility, and one of Marvel Studios most emotionally resonant stories.Read Also: How WandaVision Recreated the Sitcoms of the Scarlet Witch’s Childhood On an Apple device?
