Tuesday s TV news comes loaded with exciting casting and renewal news from the winter portion of the biannual Television Critics Association press tour, where Amazon shared casting news for Lord of the Rings and Comedy Central gave an early renewal to Awkwafina s new biographical comedy series, and Starz had a non-answer about an Outlander sequel.Elsewhere in the TV-verse, The CW announced that it is making series based on some fan-favorite characters (and actors!) and Netflix gave us some more of stalker Joe in You.TOP STORYIT S A BIRD! IT S A PLANE! IT S A NEW SUPERMAN SERIES!(Photo by © Warner Bros. / Courtesy: Everett Collection)After renewing a baker s dozen of series last week, The CW has announced that two new shows will be joining its docket — although their titles and characters will be familiar to many avid TV watchers.Superman Lois will star Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as, respectively, the Man of Steel and the fierce investigative journalist who works with him at his day job. The actors already appeared as Clark Kent and Lois Lane on The CW s Crisis on Infinite Earths massive crossover events this winter and should not be confused with Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher, who played the dynamic reporting duo in ABC s similarly titled 1990s drama Lois Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. This show is written and executive produced by The Flash s Todd Helbing and executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Geoff Johns. And Supernatural s Jared Padalecki has ensured he will have no gaps in his resume, jumping from that show s 15-season run to star in The CW s Walker. A re-imagining of the Chuck Norris series Walker, Texas Ranger, this version finds hero Cordell Walker as a widower and father returning home to Austin after being undercover for two years. He attempts to reconnect with his two kids, navigate family strife and solve his wife s increasingly mysterious death.Walker is written and executive produced by Being Human s Anna Fricke and executive produced by Dan Lin, Lindsay Liberatore and Padalecki.Other new series announced on Tuesday include Paramount Network s Mayor of Kingstown, a scripted drama from Taylor Sheridan that follows a family that works as the power brokers between the politicians and prison system in a small Michigan town, and Amazon s Jack Reacher based on Lee Child book series.LOTR CASTING DETAILS REVEALED(Photo by clockwise from top left: courtesy of the actor; Steve Mack/Everett Collection; Artur Widak/NurPhoto via Getty Images; Mark Johnson / ©Hulu/BBC / Courtesy: Everett Collection; Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection; Courtesy Amazon Studios: Wolf_Marloh, Taylor Rettke, Pier Carthew, Samson Makumbe, Max Parker)During its TCA press day, Amazon released the names — though no character details — of 15 actors joining its eagerly-anticipated Lord of the Rings TV series. They include Counterpart s Nazanin Boniadi and Mindhunter s Robert Aramayo.Amazon Studios co-head of TV Vernon Sanders said that they’ve had the first table read and production begins begins in February. For more details about the show, see Rotten Tomatoes Everything We Know About The Lord of the Rings Amazon Series. Amazon also announced that Meagan Good, Grace Byers, Jerrie Johnson, and Shoniqua Shandai will star in an as-yet-to-be-titled series from Girls Trip’s Tracy Oliver. The single-camera comedy will follow four black women who are friends from their college days at NYU as they navigate sex, relationships, and chasing their dreams. Pharrell Williams and Mimi Valdés are executive producing along with Oliver, Amy Poehler, Dave Becky, and Kim Lessing.Malcolm D. Lee, who directed Girls Trip, will direct the first two episodes.Other casting news from TCA include news that Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra will star in Amazon s Citadel, and Method Man has joined Starz s Power sequel, Power Book II: Ghost, which will also star Mary J. Blige.I LL BE WATCHING YOU, SEASON 3(Photo by Netflix)Netflix s stalker thriller You has been renewed for a third season, welcoming back Penn Badgley as the dangerous Joe and Victoria Pedretti, who played his season 2 obsession, Love. Co-creators Sera Gamble and Berlanti are returning as executive producers and she will continue to serve as showrunner. Also, in conjunction with the show s TCA panel, Comedy Central has renewed biographical comedy Awkwafina is Nora from Queens ahead of its premiere on January 22.ABOUT THOSE OUTLANDER SEQUEL RUMORS (Photo by Starz)Will there be a spin-off to hit Outlander? Starz president and CEO Jeffrey Hirsch teased during his TCA panel that we think there s a lot of room in the Outlander universe to have the story extensions or spins or sequels. He said that, although we continue to look at that with our partners at [studio] Sony, he had no stronger comment right now. Also, John Wick fans will have to wait a bit longer to see Starz s related series The Continental. Hirsch said that show probably won t come out until after the fourth film is released next year.He also stressed that the previously announced sequel to the Showtime dramedy Weeds is still very much in production and studio Lionsgate is putting together a group of people to work on it.DEALS: AMAZON, BRAD PITT S PRODUCTION COMPANY PARTNER(Photo by Netflix)On Tuesday, Amazon Studios announced that it had signed an overall deal for television with Plan B Entertainment. The company, which is headed by Brad Pitt and co-presidents Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, will produce the new Amazon Original series Outer Range, created by Brian Watkins, and is also working with Amazon Studios and Legendary Television to develop Paper Girls, a dramatic series based on Brian K. Vaughan’s best-selling graphic novel.Plan B is also producing The Underground Railroad, creator Barry Jenkins upcoming new historical drama based on the Colson Whitehead book. Amazon executives said during the channel s TCA press day that Jenkins is currently in production on the series and it should premiere later this year.Amazon also announced that it has signed an overall deal with Steve McQueen, which includes the filmmaker s Last Days, a new series about people who are dispatched to space.Earlier in the day, Comedy Central announced that it has signed a new overall deal with comedian Daniel Tosh that includes a four-season renewal for his long-running comedy series Tosh.0.(Photo by Disney+)Also on Tuesday, the Paley Center for Media released its list of panels for the fan-centric PaleyFest, which will run March 13 to 20 at Los Angeles Dolby Theatre. The lineup includes CBS All Access Star Trek: Picard on March 18, Starz s Outlander on March 19 and, closing the festivities, Disney+ s The Mandalorian on March 22.“It’s an honor to be invited to PaleyFest and join other filmmakers and talent in celebrating great television programming. It is especially exciting to be representing our Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, at the closing night presentation,” Jon Favreau, executive producer and creator of The Mandalorian, said in a statement.More details and ticket information is available at paleyfest.org.Baby Yoda Announced for Build-A-BearSpeaking of The Mandalorian, the series breakout star The Child — aka Baby Yoda — is coming to Build-A-Bear workshops. CEO Sharon Price John announced the deal during a presentation on Tuesday at the ICR Conference in Orlando, Florida, Business Insider reported. I m excited to share we will be one of the first companies to provide the digital and internet phenomenon who is trending higher than all the presidential candidates combined, John said.Like this? Fresh news, everyone: A very Rotten book is on the way.We re super excited to announce that this October we will release our first ever book, Rotten Movies We Love. The book, published by Running Press, will feature 101 movies with Rotten Tomatometer scores that we love regardless. (Because we – just like you – still can t believe Step Brothers is Rotten.)We go to bat for the splat-worthy movies in Rotten Movies We Love for a variety of reasons. The movies might be:Audience favorites that bombed with critics – like Space Jam and Bad BoysSci-fi curiosities so bad they re awesome – like Masters of the Universe and ZardozCult classics the critics didn t see coming – like The Last Dragon, The Craft, and MacGruberUnderrated gems that have aged very well – like Jennifer s Body, Event Horizon, and The Cable GuySequels worth a second look – like Rocky IV, Return to Oz, and Home Alone 2The majority of films have been chosen by the editors of Rotten Tomatoes, but the book also features essays from some great Tomatometer-approved critics whose work we ve long admired, including Leonard Maltin, Empire magazine editor-in-chief Terri White, Vanity Fair writer K. Austin Collins, Monica Castillo, and many more. The book is available from October 8, 2019, and you can find out more info and preorder it here.Think you know which lovable Rotten movies are going to be featured in the book? (Photo by Universal Pictures)The current situation of social distancing has many of us thinking of ways to maximize the time we spend at home. We re also eating several times a day and annoying our pets, but being productive does cross our minds from time to time. Puzzles, long-abandoned books, craft projects, and New Year s resolutions have suddenly jumped to the top of our to-do lists. In the RT comments, many of you have shared how you re catching up on classic films, and we happen to agree that now is the perfect time to increase your classic film viewing.Concentrating on films released before 1980 (both well-known titles and hidden gems), we re producing new guides to essential classic films curated by theme, filmmaker, actor, genre, or style – all for your classic catch-up needs. Want to see our picks for the best French farces? How about a curated list of Fresh picks from Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers, or Billy Wilder? As well as curating watchlists, we re breaking down the films, telling you where you can watch them, and giving you some more recent and/or well-known films the classics might remind you of so you can gauge which movies are right for you. This week in the Classic Film Catch-Up, we re breaking out with heist films. Long cons, strong-arm jobs, and bank heists from professionals and amateurs alike have a long history in film, and that history has given us some of our most celebrated performances and cinematic stories. From Melville and Friedkin to Kubrick and  Soderbergh, many beloved filmmakers have made a mark on the heist flick genre, which came of age in the late 60s and early 70s. In truth, we could make a list solely comprised of films from that time period, and it would still be quite spectacular, but we did include a few from decades prior. With hundreds of titles to choose from, iconic films like The Great Escape, Ocean s Eleven, and lesser-known gems like The Silent Partner failed to earn a spot on our list, but are still definitely worthy of a revisit. For our list below, though, we tried to find diversity within the genre, intermixing confidence schemes with bank jobs and heist comedies with gritty noirs. Each entry is unique, but they work within a shared formula: get a crew, plan the job, and do some nefarious things to take something without anyone finding out. Read below to see our list of classic heist films.Got another favorite heist classic you d add to our list? Have a suggestion for a future theme or classic film to feature in the column? Let us know in the comments. Dog Day Afternoon (1975) 96% What is it? The true-life tale of a man who storms a Brooklyn bank for a day-time robbery, and everything that can go wrong does. Why you need to see it: A frequent choice in our Five Favorite Film series, this dramatic and at times hilarious tale of a bank job gone awry from Sidney Lumet showcases one of Al Pacino s greatest performances. Trying to get enough money for his lover s sex-reassignment surgery, Sonny Wortzik (Pacino) tries to rob a bank, and everything after that goes from bad to worse in what many consider to be one of the best films from the 70s. One of the highest-grossing movies of its year and a critical hit, Dog Day Afternoon was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Actor, which Pacino didn t win. Twenty years later, he would finally take home a golden statuette for The Scent of Woman, but his turn here alongside his The Godfather co-star John Cazale gives us, according to critic Roger Ebert,  one of the most interesting modern movie characters. Check it out for the verbal sparring and Pacino s acting, and its re-watchability is unmatched – you ll find new favorite moments each time you see it.Watch it if you like: Before the Devil Knows You re Dead, A Simple Plan, Reservoir Dogs, Fargo.Where to watch: Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes. The Sting (1973) 94% What is it? A young conman attempts to pull off a large-scale confidence scheme against the man who killed his partner, aided by a veteran fraudster. Why you need to see it: It s a movie with Robert Redford and Paul Newman – do you really need anything else? If by chance you do, The Sting is a must-see con film and one of the best examples of a perfectly balanced heist comedy. Redford and Newman s undeniable chemistry is the main draw here, but the mini-course on the language of large-scale confidence schemes serves as a welcome bonus. The original Ocean s Eleven, The Italian Job, and Going in Style all have modern-day remakes that were received to varying critical and commercial success but, this Depression-era masterpiece from George Roy Hill is thought to be inimitable. (Check out the laughable The Sting II if you need further proof). A box-office smash which re-teamed Redford and Newman just four years after the iconic Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, the film took home six more Oscars, including Best Picture.Watch it if you like: Ocean s Eleven, Matchstick Men, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Logan Lucky, American Hustle, Now You See Me.Where to watch: Stream now on the Starz app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes. The French Connection (1971) 98% What is it? A group of narcotics detectives track and try to intercept a large supply of heroin. Why you need to see it: On a list of quintessential 70s cop films, The French Connection would invariably rank high, so we understand if you re surprised to see it here on a list of heist films. Yes, the film follows a group of detectives as they try to get the bad guys, but with the exception of the players (among them leads Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider) all the elements of a heist are there: A group of professionals come together and concoct an elaborate plan to steal something from someone without them knowing – that s a heist movie any way you slice it. Bonnie Clyde is thought to be the first film of the New Hollywood movement – a period in American cinema which ushered in a new crop of dynamic young filmmakers and during which the modern-day blockbuster was born – but The French Connection solidified this new shift in filmmaking and film marketing. Featuring one of the best car chases in the history of film, William Friedkin s cop thriller is gritty, fast-paced, and completely unlike any police drama that came before it. Hackman is electrifying as the short-tempered, boozy bigot Popeye Doyle, and was the rightful winner of the Best Actor prize in 1972, which came alongside four more wins for the film, including Best Picture.Watch it if you like: The Italian Job, Heat, L.A. Confidential, Bullitt, The Untouchables, The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.  Where to watch: Stream now on the Starz app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and  iTunes. The Italian Job (1969) 83% What is it? A group of seasoned criminals fresh out of prison races through Italy trying to hijack a shipment of gold. Why you need to see it: If you enjoyed the 2003 remake of The Italian Job, prepare yourself: where that film was serviceable fun, the original film with Michael Caine was a game-changer. Perhaps a bit too camp and brash for its time, the British heist comedy was not universally loved upon release. The New York Times critic Vincent Canby dubbed the film technically sophisticated and emotionally retarded. Putting aside the dated language, the film does lean into action over plot, but that does not diminish the enjoyment of watching Caine and his cockney band of thieves race around Italy in the iconic MINI Coopers. The film is worth a watch for those car chases alone.Watch it if you like: Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Bullitt, Gone in 60 Seconds, Fast Five, Inside Man. Where to watch: Stream now on Amazon Prime Video, The Criterion Channel. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Google Play, and  iTunes. The Killing (1956) 95% What is it? A long-time crook has a simple plan: one last job before he settles down with his lady love. But what was supposed to be a simple job finds the two lovers caught up in a web of deception and murder. Why you need to see it: Though not the first to do it, The Killing married itself to non-linear storytelling in a way that was wholly unique at the time; and it was a commitment that would also turn out to be a bit too revolutionary and decades ahead audience s tastes. Stanley Kubrick s third feature – but his first with a professional crew – was a headache for Paramount from the moment it was shot. Hated by test audiences, the film barely received an American release and was a commercial flop. However, contemporary critics recognized Kubrick s audacious skill with dialogue and camera movement and heralded the film as a masterwork, and its director as one to watch. It has since earned cult-like status, and its influences can be seen in the work of Quentin Tarantino, Christopher Nolan, and the Coen brothers. A taut noir, the black-and-white drama commits to the realism of pulling off the perfect job. How the subsequent events unravel for our lead con-artist after the job is done is where we find the film s brilliance.Watch it if you like: Reservoir Dogs, The Killer, Chinatown, Thief, The Getaway, The Layer Cake.Where to watch: Rent or buy on Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.Topkapi (1964) 90%(Photo by Everett Collection)What is it? A woman and her ex-lover plot to steal a priceless dagger in Istanbul with the help of a simple-minded small-time crook. Why you need to see it: Jules Dassin s Topkapi is one of the best cinematic clap-backs ever filmed. In 1955, Dassin s Rififi – which won him a Best Director prize at Cannes – set the blueprint for modern-day heist films and soon became the subject of several parodies, including Mario Monicelli s Big Deal on Madonna Street. Tired of being the butt of the joke, Dassin released Topkapi in 1964 and, in doing so, ultimately got the last laugh as his genre send-up dwarfed all previous attempts. The comedy of the bumbling thieves who might just be inept enough to pull off an intricate robbery is only second in hilarity to the scene-stealing performance of Peter Ustinov who plays Simpson, a low-level crook caught in the wake of the larger crime.Watch it if you like: Casino Royale, American Vandal, Dr. Strangelove, The Whole Nine Yards, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.Where to watch: Stream now on Amazon Prime Video. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, and Google Play.Second Breath (1966) 100% (Photo by The Criterion Channel)What is it? After breaking out of prison, a career criminal plans one last job to secure his retirement while a dogged police detective is in hot pursuit. Why you need to see it: The godfather of French New Wave, Jean-Pierre Melville was tenacious when it came to authenticity on screen. From props to accents to his documentary style of filmmaking, his attention to detail and reality is present in every frame of Le Deuxieme Souffle. Melville s commitment would inspire the neorealism of directors François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, and Agnes Varda. Sporting a high body count for its time, Le Deuxieme Souffle was a film that let the gangsters be gangsters. Thrilling, and dripping with suspense and violence, the film gives the audience a constant sense of unease as the characters descend deeper into the French underworld. An intimate epic, according to Martin Scorsese, the film was a key inspiration for his Oscar-nominated Jimmy Hoffa epic The Irishman. Watch it if you like: The Irishman, Miller s Crossing, Road to Perdition, Hell or High Water. Where to watch: Stream now on The Criterion Channel app. Rent or buy on Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.High Sierra (1941) 91%What is it? A seasoned ex-con must lead a group of untried criminals in the robbery of a desert resort. Why you need to see it: The first pairing of several between Humphrey Bogart and director John Huston, High Sierra is a thoughtful bridge between the brash 40s gangster flicks and the minimalistic crime-noirs of the 50s. Huston and Bogart would go on to collaborate on The Maltese Falcon, Key Largo, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and The African Queen; never was the power of Bogart s appeal more on display than when framed by Huston s lens. High Sierra is a heist film that utilizes early noir elements before they were popularized in the 1950s, and it s distinguished by its smart twists as well as Bogart s complex turn as Roy Earle. He is also perfectly complemented by Ida Lupino s portrayal of the temptress gangster s moll.Watch it if you like: The Maltese Falcon, The Fugitive, White Heat, The Town, The Usual Suspects. Where to watch: Stream now on The Criterion Channel app. Rent or buy on FandangoNOW, Vudu, Amazon, Google Play, and iTunes.
Fast Movies with Both Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson: 74%  Tomatometer Average / .043 Billion Worldwide Box Office AverageFast Movies with Only Vin Diesel: 41% Tomatometer Average / 3 Million Worldwide Box Office AverageFast Movies with Only Dwayne Johnson: 68% Tomatometer Score / 0 Million Worldwide Box Office AverageAfter a much publicized riff between Diesel and Johnson, the two have reportedly squashed their feud, and to quote singer Jack Johnson, they’ve realized “We’re Better Together.” Whether it’s their Godzilla-esque brawl in Fast Five or their team-up in Fast and Furious 6, audiences like seeing the two burly men alongside each other on screen. Hopefully, in future installments, we’ll be safe from The Fate of the Furious dramatics when the two technically appeared in scenes together but never shot any of them with the other present, and everyone sensed it, as it was clear they were kept apart on purpose.Fast Five, Fast Furious 6, and Furious 7 are the three best-reviewed films of the franchise, and you get to see the two of them actually share screen time. Hobbs Shaw notwithstanding, let’s hope that Fast 10 Your Seatbelts (please be the title) reunites the two A-listers for some A+ quality time.9. The perpetually glistening super agent, who apparently sweat about 4 ¼ cups of water in Fast Five, quickly became a fan favorite, and he has continued his perspiring streak in all of the sequels. Kudos to Bloomberg for finding a way to quantify it all; we are jealous and impressed that you figured out he was “wet” in 90.3% of Fast Five and 73.4% of The Fate of the Furious. Based on the evidence, audiences are big fans of sweaty, oiled-up Dwayne Johnson. And there you have it: the nine ingredients you need to craft the perfect Fast and Furious movie. d the Winter Soldier shedding a light on some sociopolitical intrigues of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s primary Earth attention is beginning to turn toward Loki for the next level of Multiversal madness. But what is it all about? How can Loki (Tom Hiddleston) star in his own series? While some of those answers are still lost in the mists of the Nine Realms, we have some idea of what the show will be thanks to trailers, casting choices, and some pre-release marketing. So let’s take a look at what we know about Loki so far.[Updated on 5/5/21 Scroll to the end for new info.]A Little Background(Photo by ©Paramount Pictures)As it happens, Loki was one of the earliest reported series planned for Disney+ alongside the programs that became WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Solider. Like those series, the intent was to focus on characters who appeared in the films but generally supported the main Avengers cast. It is still the guiding principle as series like Hawkeye and Secret Invasion will promote supporting players to lead roles. But Loki never quite fit the supporting character mold, as he is as much a star attraction in the Thor movies as the God of Thunder himself. Some would even argue Loki is the main draw of those films. To recap, the character is Asgardian prince Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) adoptive and quarrelsome brother. He also happens to be the son of the Frost Giant king Laufey. As we meet the pair, Loki engineers a plan to get Thor exiled so he can become Odin s (Anthony Hopkins) heir apparent. Things do not go as planned, and after Thor throws him off the Rainbow Bridge connecting Asgard to the other realms, he meets Thanos (Josh Brolin) and joins the quest for the Infinity Stones. He quickly locates the Space Stone on Earth and plans another scheme to recover it while laying waste to the planet. This also goes awry with Thor taking him back to Asgard in shackles. But his knowledge of the other ways in and out of Asgard come in handy when the Dark Elves invade and Thor must spirit Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) out of the realm. Loki seemingly dies during the adventure, but it later turns out he took advantage of the situation to assume Odin’s identity and run Asgard his way.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)It turned out to be a mistake as it allowed Hela (Cate Blanchett) to escape her confinement and absolutely wreck the party Loki started in Asgard. After a tense conversation with her, both he and Thor would end up on Sakar, where they eventually agree to join forces and stop Hela. Although, in order to do it, Asgard is destroyed.Soon after, Loki dies at the hands of Thanos, who was mighty angry that he never returned with the Space Stone. And, now that we think about, he also had the Mind Stone (hidden in a scepter) in a transfer of weapons that never quite made sense.Charting the course of Loki’s story across the Marvel Cinematic Universe films is important because, despite often faking his death, that Loki is still dead, and his journey is seemingly over. The Loki Of Loki(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)The Disney+ series will presumably revolve around the Loki we saw escaping with the Tesseract in Avengers: Endgame. In this series, Hiddleston is playing a version of Loki who is much angrier, more obviously villainous, and still ready to hand the Space Stone over to Thanos. Well, maybe. As a trickster, he probably always planned to keep it just out of the Mad Titan s reach. According to some reports, his plan is to use the Infinity Stone to alter human history. But the teaser Disney and Marvel released last December complicates this notion with the program’s apparent status quo – a notion amplified by April’s full trailer. Loki is now the guest of the Time Variance Authority, an organization devoted to keeping the timelines (and the Multiverse) secure. Loki’s theft of the Tesseract at the moment seen in Endgame is an aberration of the timeline and must be corrected. Being the God of Mischief, though, it is easy to see how he would confound the TVA. Less clear, though, is how this conflict would send him careening through time.Although, we have a couple of guesses…Joining him on this journey are actors like Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, Wunmi Mosaku, Sasha Lane, Erika Coleman, and (for a single episode) Richard E. Grant. Wilson plays Mobius M. Mobius, a TVA middle manager dedicated to getting the truth out of Loki. The others, like Mbatha-Raw s Judge Renslayer and Mosaku’s Hunter B-15, will meet Loki as he enters TVA processing and Mobius selects him for a perilous mission. Or does Loki volunteer to atone for his crimes? Apparently stuck in a thriller of his own making, Loki is both cop and criminal. It is a Scanner Darkly like situation that somehow leads him to become infamous 1970s hijacker D.B. Cooper. There is still the possibility, of course, that the Loki we’ve come to know and love may have cheated death again and is playing a game with his time variant. It would not be the first time Loki (at least in the comics) has faced himself in a battle of wits. But what end would it serve the Prime Loki to have a variant of himself running loose?Well, it would be mischievous for a start. The Infinity Saga Connection(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)But with the Space Stone seemingly in TVA custody (note the TVA operative holding the Tesseract early in the April trailer), it would seem the series will also concern itself with some unfinished business from the Infinity Saga – namely, the Hulk’s (Mark Ruffalo) promise to return the Stones to their rightful place in time. As the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) warned him, keeping the Stones (or misplacing them) would cause the creation of aberrant timelines which would unleash their own horrors. A deleted Endgame scene offered a glimpse of a reality in which Dormammu could not be bargained with, for example. And in the December teaser, we got a glimpse of a completely devastated New York. But then, as we are presumably dealing with a younger version of Loki, would he have the empathy to care about such things? As the TVA’s jurisdiction extends into the Multiverse, it is possible these scenes of devastation occur in realities other than the MCU we’re used to. If this is the case, Loki may be the series to most thoroughly cover the nature of a Multiverse, which will matter to Marvel films fairly soon. In fact, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige already confirmed the events of the series, like those of WandaVision, will spill into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness a project that now seems poised to fill the role of an Avengers film in Phase 4 of the MCU.(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)And while we’re talking connections, there’s that brief glimpse in the April trailer of Loki seemingly entering the Soul Space and talking to Black Widow. Of course, that could easily be as much of a distraction as all the talk of Mutants appearing on WandaVision. Meanwhile, the inclusion of Judge Renslayer in the series may lead to a connection with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania villain Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), as her comic book counterpart has a history with the time-travelling despot. Then there is, of course, the person who actually went back in time to put the Stones back where they belong. Now, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) definitely put the Space Stone that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) retrieved from the 1970s back in place, but would he feel honor-bound to recover the one Loki stole during their first attempt to get the Tesseract after the Battle of New York? Maybe that’s a question for the second season. Speaking of which Loki Will Have A Second Season(Photo by Jasin Boland/©Marvel/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Although initially announced to be a limited series like WandaVision and TFaTWS, Loki appears to have lied about its status as a miniseries. Instead, plans are already underway for a second season of the program. Such a change is consistent for the character and an alteration Hiddleston could definitely live with. Part of the original appeal in making the first Marvel Studios shows limited was allowing the actors to have maximum flexibility in their schedules. But Hiddleston is no stranger to shooting television and fitting the format’s demands into his acting calendar. In fact, out of all the Avengers actors to appear in a Marvel TV series, he would seem to be the most game to continue. And why not? The fans love him as Loki. He clearly loves playing the part, too – just look up that video of his appearance as Loki at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con to see the glee on his face while wearing the horns (figuratively, anyway). Also, since he will once again be the more devious and callous version of the character (presumably), we get to experience him becoming an anti-hero (or is that anti-villain?) in a whole new way. That certainly makes Loki a series worth watching when its six-episode first season debuts in June.Wednesdays Are the New FridaysOn May 5, 2021, Marvel released a new teaser and, more importantly, an announcement video featuring Hiddleston out of character and addressing the audience. In the latter, Hiddleston interrupts a series of iconic superhero props Cap s shield, Iron Man s mask, Mjolnir to introduce himself and lament the way Loki is often sidelined in similar montages. He concludes by stating, Wednesdays are the new Fridays, after which the video reveals Loki s premiere date has been moved up a couple days from Friday, June 11 to Wednesday, June 9. New episodes will drop every Wendesday thereafter, breaking the pattern set by WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. He s a tricky one, that God of Mischief.Season 1 of Loki will premiere on June 9, 2021 on Disney+.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

Ghcxuf Subjective reality is still a key element of the series, and while audiences may still end up sympathetic to David’s pain, Hawley hoped viewers “realize over the course of the season how this need for love — that he feels is solely about him — begins to distance us from David a bit [and think,] ‘Oh, he s a very ill man.’”But even in that, his illness does not necessary equal villainy in the Golden Age comic book sense. David’s selfishness may, however, lead some to see him that way. “We expect our characters to learn and to be redeemed, but there are some people who aren t really capable of that,” Hawley said.Meanwhile, Amahl Farouk is, in fact, trying to redeem himself. Though, as Negahban put it, “it s more about saving the world and also saving David. He really cares about David.” Despite being the unambiguous evil orbiting David’s life in the first season, Farouk is a changed person when we meet him at the beginning of Season 3. “He s trying to be a good boy,” the actor said. “There has been a struggle for him to kind of determine whether [that is] right or wrong for him. And he s trying to discover that through his journey.”In some ways, the journey, as Negahban relayed it, parallels David’s major internal conflict. “He came from nothing. He became somebody, he had the power. He got lost in his power; he didn t know what to do with it. And his rage and anger took over,” he explained. “It goes full circle and it gets to the point that he realizes that that rage and anger is what is destroying him. So if he can get rid of that, he can redeem himself. He can redo everything.”(Photo by Pari Dukovic/FX)To some extent, Hawley said the conflicts mirror the tension between childhood and adulthood, adding that at least some of David’s issues go back to the moment his birth parents gave him up for adoption. And David’s attempt to stop Farouk in the past means he may run into his father, X-Men founder Charles Xavier (Harry Lloyd).Lloyd told us not to expect the “straight-laced Charles we know” from the X-Men films or animated television series.“It s trippy stuff,” said Stevens, adding there is “a lot of confusion and hurt, obviously” in regards to David s feelings on Xavier.“It is nice to finally to have this string that ties our crazy balloon to the main raft of the X-Men stories,” he continued. “And I think that will be satisfying to people who know and love X-Men and Legion. He also suspected Legion viewers not well-versed in X-Men lore will become curious about the Professor and his Merry Mutants: [It] might cause them to go and watch some other X-Men-y type things.”Of course, it remains to be seen if David will follow in his comic book counterpart s footsteps and end the world as viewers have known it. That story was ultimately resolved when somewhat familiar mutants from the new timeline learned about David s actions and prevented Xavier s death. It is a pretty out-there idea and, yet, fits pretty well into the framework of Legion. No one on set was willing to divulge if the ending resembles David s most infamous comic book turn, but Stevens said the end gives the whole story a meaning not readily apparent before. It s really delicately done, I think. And very beautiful, he said.Legion season 3 premieres Monday, June 24 at 10 p.m. on FXLike this? This Week s Ketchup brings you seven headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Fiddler on the Roof, Labyrinth 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. This WEEK S TOP STORYHENRY CAVILL IN TALKS TO RETURN AS SUPERMAN IN FUTURE DC MOVIES(Photo by Clay Enos/Warner Bros.)Nearly two years ago, one of the biggest superhero stories of 2018 was the revelation that Henry Cavill was dropping out of talks with Warner Bros. for future appearances as their Superman (specifically, the movie he would have co-starred in would ve been 2019 s Shazam!). Just a week after the announcement that Zack Snyder s Justice League will debut on HBO Max in 2021 (speaking of which, the first image of Darkseid was revealed this week), Henry Cavill is now back in negotiations for further appearances as Superman after all. Similar to what might have been for Shazam!, the talks with Henry Cavill reportedly do not involve a Man of Steel sequel (or any other solo Superman movie), but would instead would be Superman appearances in other DC superhero movies. Which movie (or movies) this deal might involve have yet to be revealed, but the titles written about the most this week seem to be Aquaman 2 (starring Jason Momoa) and the Shazam! spinoff Black Adam (starring Dwayne Johnson). Some writers have also picked up on a possible similarity to how Marvel Studios has used the Incredible Hulk since Mark Ruffalo took over the role, with his Hulk appearing in other heroes movies but not his own (though in that example, it was because Universal still had the rights to any Hulk movie).Other Top Headlines1. SONIC THE HEDGEHOG SEQUEL CONFIRMED (Photo by ©Paramount Pictures)When a movie is a big hit, reporting on an announced sequel can seem like sort of a no-brainer, but Sonic the Hedgehog is not one of those movies, as its road to success was far from a foregone conclusion. It was just over a year ago that the world saw the film s first trailer (with the original CGI character design for Sonic), which led to the release being delayed a few months while the character was redesigned to look more like he did in the Sega video game franchise. Sonic the Hedgehog eventually earned over 0 million globally (a number dinted a bit by the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic) and it was also a VOD hit, with Paramount currently reporting just under 2 million digital sales. With all of that hard work and good news under their belt, Paramount Pictures, Sega, and director Jeff Fowler are now officially starting development on a Sonic the Hedgehog sequel. The various Sonic video games have introduced a variety of supporting characters, including Knuckles the Echidna, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Tails the Fox, so it s possible one (or all) of them could be introduced in the sequel.2. TOM CRUISE REUNITES WITH EDGE OF TOMORROW DIRECTOR FOR OUTER SPACE ADVENTURE (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)A few weeks ago, Tom Cruise was announced as the world s first movie star to actually film a movie in outer space (at the International Space Station), and already the film has made its next step towards actual production. Cruise will be reuniting with director Doug Liman, with whom he has previously worked on both Edge of Tomorrow (Certified Fresh at 90%) and American Made (Certified Fresh at 86%) (and they re both committed to an Edge of Tomorrow sequel). Cruise s partners on the currently untitled project also include Elon Musk s SpaceX and NASA itself. Tom Cruise and Doug Liman had previously been developing a movie called Lunar Park (about renegade employees who venture to the moon to steal an energy source ), but this new project is reportedly a separate film. Doug Liman s next film will be the post-apocalyptic Chaos Walking (starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley), and Tom Cruise s next film will be the sequel Top Gun: Maverick, now scheduled for December 23, 2020.3. APPLE WINS AUCTION FOR MARTIN SCORSESE S LEONARDO DICAPRIO MOVIE (Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)One of the biggest surprises about last year s The Irishman (Certified Fresh at 96%) was that Netflix ended up spending over 0 million on it, which is a number generally reserved for FX-heavy summer action flicks or superhero movies (to be fair, The Irishman was FX-heavy too, due to the CGI de-aging). For his next film, the 1920s serial killer true story Killers of the Flower Moon (starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro), director Martin Scorsese is expecting to exceed The Irishman, with a budget somewhere in the 0-0 million range, and that recently prompted Paramount Pictures to start looking for a financial partner. Paramount did land a major streaming company, but instead of Netflix, this time around it s Apple who stepped in, snatching up a deal that would give the streaming rights to Apple+ after a theatrical release by Paramount. This was the second major deal for Apple+ in the last ten days, following their acquisition earlier this month of Tom Hanks World War II film Greyhound, which previously was scheduled for a June 19, 2020 theatrical release.4. HAMILTON DIRECTOR REMAKING FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (Photo by Everett Collection)By 1971, classic Hollywood and especially old school musicals were definitely on the wane as New Hollywood was on the ascent, but there were still a few musicals in that tradition that became box office hits. One of those films was Fiddler on the Roof, the adaptation of the 1964 Broadway musical about a Jewish village just before the Russian Revolution. The original stage production won nine Tony Awards, and was the first longest-running play until Grease broke its record. Fiddler on the Roof also holds the distinction of being the movie that gave composer John Williams his first of five Academy Awards (before Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Schindler s List). With Steven Spielberg s West Side Story remake (12/18/2020) wrapped and coming soon, MGM is now developing a Fiddler on the Roof remake to be directed by Thomas Kail, who directed the version of the Broadway hit Hamilton that will debut on Disney+ on July 3rd.5. JUMANJI CO-STARS AWKWAFINA AND KAREN GILLAN REUNITE IN NEW ACTION-COMEDY(Photo by RCF/Everett Collection, Karwai Tang/Getty Images)After co-starring in Ocean s Eight and the first movie in the eventual Crazy Rich Asians franchise, Awkwafina added another franchise to her filmography in December with Jumanji: The Next Level (Fresh at 71%), sharing the screen with Karen Gillan. Now Awkwafina and Gillan are signed to co-star in another action movie called Shelly, about an awkw -ard young woman (Awkwafina) who grows up to become an assassin, only to discover that her next target is none other than her worst high school bully (Karen Gillan). Shelly is being called a cross between Mean Girls and Bill Hader s hitman series Barry. Prolific TV sitcom director Jude Weng (Fresh Off the Boat, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) is attached to make his feature film directorial debut with Shelly.6. LABYRINTH GETTING SEQUEL 30+ YEARS LATER FROM DOCTOR STRANGE DIRECTOR (Photo by (c)TriStar courtesy Everett Collection)One of the first surprising news stories of 2020 was the announcement that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) had dropped out of directing the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (the job eventually went to Spider-Man director Sam Raimi instead). This week, Derrickson did sign on to develop another sequel to a popular and ambitious fantasy film, although the necessary development time probably means it won t be his next project. The movie in question is a sequel to the 1986 musical fantasy Labyrinth (Fresh at 71%), featuring the young Jennifer Connelly and the late David Bowie as the Goblin King. The premise of the Labyrinth sequel isn t yet known, including whether or not Connelly will be reprising her role. One possible story scenario could involve the children of either Connelly s character or her younger brother (who was the baby kidnapped in Labyrinth). Brian Henson of the Jim Henson Company will executive produce this sequel to a film directed by his late father, Jim Henson.7. A QUIET PLACE PRODUCERS TAKE ON BLACK HOLE DISASTER FLICK(Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Robotics engineer and best-selling author Daniel H. Wilson s 2011 sci-fi novel Robopocalypse nearly made the transition from page to screen when none other than Steven Spielberg showed interest in tackling it, but the film has remained in limbo ever since DreamWorks put it on hold indefinitely after several production delays. In the meantime, Wilson has continued to write, and this week, he sold a spec script called The Blue Afternoon That Lasted Forever to Paramount Pictures. The screenplay tells the story of a NASA physicist who discovers the formation of a black hole that will destroy Earth in a few days, but he struggles to find anyone who believes his evidence or his theory. The Blue Afternoon That Lasted Forever is being developed by producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, who delivered a big hit for Paramount Pictures in 2018 with John Krasinski s A Quiet Place (Certified Fresh at 95%) and also produce Amazon s Jack Ryan, which stars Krasinski.8. NARCOS DIRECTOR WORKING WITH RIDLEY SCOTT ON PRISON THRILLER PANOPTICON (Photo by Giles Keyte/TM & copyright ©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)There are only so many films that a single director can ever personally take on, and Ridley Scott certainly knows this, having had to part with dozens of projects over the years. Scott is also super active as a producer through his and his late brother Tony s Scott Free production company. This fall, Scott Free Productions hopes to start filming an adaptation of the screenplay Panopticon, which first came to attention in 2017 as one of the entries on that year s Black List of Unproduced Screenplays. Panopticon is described as a prison thriller told from the perspectives of a new inmate, a correctional officer, and a Wall Street hotshot. The news this week is that Panopticon will be the next feature film directed by Colombian filmmaker Andrés Baiz, whose previous work has included 12 episodes of the Netflix crime series Narcos (Fresh at 89%).9. UNIVERSAL LICENSES DARK MAGIC YOUNG ADULT NOVEL SCHOLOMANCE (Photo by ©Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)One of the fun things about reporting on so many new movie projects every week is the occasional learning experience it provides. For example, until this week, this writer thought Scholomance was just one of the original World of Warcraft dungeons. As it turns out, The Scholomance comes from Transylvanian folklore and refers to a school of dark magic in the mountains of Transylvania; it has been featured in a few different interesting stories, including Bram Stoker s Dracula. Scholomance is also the name of an upcoming fantasy book series by author Naomi Novik, who this week struck a deal with Universal Pictures for a potential film franchise. The first Scholomance novel to be adapted will be A Deadly Education, about El Higgins, a girl with unmatched power who enters a school for the magically gifted, where failure means certain death. Novik also wrote the Termeraire novel series about a world where dragons really exist, and for a while, it was was being developed as a possible new franchise for Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson.
