Could music icon David Bowie have experienced the same level of fame in the England portrayed in Epix drama Pennyworth? Creator Bruno Heller and executive producer Danny Cannon doubt it.“I think he would be allowed to release that awful first album with ‘Laughing Gnome’ and all that,” Heller told Rotten Tomatoes when we talked to him, Cannon, and cast members recently. “He never would ve met Mick Ronson, and he d still be floating about singing about elves.”Considering the program’s use of anachronistic music – like The Clash and Roxy Music – the disappearance of Bowie from the cultural scene may be the clearest indication of Pennyworth’s nightmare world. It is easy to image Lord Harwood’s (Jason Flemyng) vision of England has little room for him.“I think David Bowie would probably be put into stocks and have vegetables thrown at him,” Cannon added.(Photo by Epix)Despite the easy jokes about making a show centered on Batman’s butler, Pennyworth distinguished itself by re-framing the adventures of Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon), Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge), and Martha Kane (Emma Paetz) against the style of the early 1960s and a thought experiment in which the English Civil War did not occur until the time of Queen Elizabeth II. The result was an unexpectedly satisfying debut season and an order for more episodes on EPIX.When the program returns for season 2, one year has passed since Alfie, Thomas, and Martha stopped Harwood’s coup and rescued the Queen. It has also been one year since Alfred killed his father during the senior Pennyworth s attempt to bomb the entire British aristocracy out of existence. In the ensuing chaos, Harwood, Bet Sykes (Paloma Faith), and her sister Peg (Polly Walker) escaped the Tower of London with Harwood resuming his attempt to take over the country. He may not have claimed the title of Lord Protector just yet, but with London, Manchester, and a few other smaller towns resisting his authority, the situation is pretty dicey.(Photo by Epix)Meanwhile, Alfie has worked his way into running a nightclub.“He s taken it over from a good friend of his, Bannon explained. But really his main focus is to save up some money and get out of [England].”The work keeps him busy and away from thoughts about his father. But considering he comes from a generation expected to just carry on through traumatic stress, Alfie’s nightmares linger, and Bannon doubts he’ll ever find help for his various issues.“I think it would be something perhaps that he should look into,” he joked. “I m sure if he lived nowadays in the modern world, he would look into it. Last year, it was something he was experiencing very much on his own and this year people are noticing perhaps that Maybe not that he s unraveling, but there are cracks appearing.”The nightclub itself serves as a glamorous respite from the battles on the front line and another example of that British resiliency.“We wanted London to reflect not just being at war, but the way that they could still celebrate and party in terrible circumstances, which is very British,” Cannon explained.Bannon was, nonetheless, surprised when he arrived on set and saw how swanky the club turned out to be. Expecting a more rundown nightspot, he said, “Mark Scruton, our production designer, had got carried away basically and built this enormous club that was decadent and wonderful and brilliant.”As one of the few new marquee sets, it stands out almost immediately. But the club, and the trouble Alfie gets into in the early part of the season, reflects a tougher challenge ahead — getting his mother to immigrate with him.“She s got to come with him to America,” Bannon said. “I don t think he would leave her behind. The problem is convincing her that America is a good idea. That s the hard bit for him.”(Photo by Epix)Also, for fans of Sandra (Harriet Slater), Bannon thinks Alfie loves her “in his own way,” but it may lead to other conflicts in the future— especially as Esme (Emma Corrin) is still the love of his life. The deteriorating situation in England brings Thomas back to the realm. Now appointed the British station chief for the CIA, his assignment comes with an unspoken directive: the U.S. may be willing to back Harwood over the Queen if the tide of war turns in his favor.“[Thomas s] initial intentions of working with the CIA were for reasons that he believed in,” Aldridge said. “I think he s gone on this journey [and] ending up incredibly cynical and detached from his work.”It makes for a more conflicted Thomas than we’ve seen so far. Nonetheless, Thomas continues to exhibit a boyish nature Aldridge believes only comes out around Martha.(Photo by Epix)“He s trying to do a very good job of playing an adult — I think he was even trying to play kind of older and more responsible than he is — but I think around her, there s kind of an honesty switch that happens. He s less able to bullshit her,” he said. There’s also the possibility that the way he presents himself is all a cover for the beast Crowley (Jonjo O Neill) discovered within him.But Aldridge suggested the beast is more an echo of his son, saying, “I love that was brought into it, and the idea was that it s something that he shares with Bruce.”That said, working for the Company in his new capacity may force Thomas s beast to reappear.Fighting the good fight all this time, though, is Martha. In the wake of the season 1 bombing, she continued to ally herself with the remnants of the No Name League and the Queen’s loyalist coalition.“She s kind of willing to sacrifice anything for that, almost to like a selfish degree,” Paetz said.(Photo by Epix)It means she spends plenty of time on the front lines. and it quickly becomes clear she likes the thrill of it all. Which leads to one question about future events: Will she be able to let that go some day to settle down in Gotham?“I don t think that she can really, entirely, now,” Paetz said. “It brings up questions like, ‘What does it mean to be a vigilante?’ [and] ‘Do you feel like you re doing something for the good of everyone, or actually, is it satisfying something in you, because it feels good for you to do it?’ In theory, she’s fighting a very noble cause that she does believe in, but it really satiates something in her that doesn t really have anything to do with the cause itself.”Martha’s thirst for adventure and justice in the series represents one of the largest expansions of the character in any medium. A happy addition, to be sure, even if it seems at odds with Batman’s memories of her.Although, it is always possible Bruce just doesn’t acknowledge the lives his parents led.“A lot of people say to Ben and I, ‘Oh, there s like this kind of almost stoic archetype that Thomas and Martha fall into, as his parents, how was it stepping into those roles?’ But I think that, to me, a lot of that seems like it s centered around Batman in the comics,” Paetz said. “Thomas and Martha are [the memory] of someone whose parents had died tragically young, [and] is their idea of who they might ve been — airbrushed and edited out and idealized, more than they actually were.”If that is the case, it allows for Batman’s eventual parents to become more fully realized here than ever before.(Photo by Epix)A handful of new faces will also be joining the show, including Simon Manyonda as Lucius Fox, Jessica De Gouw as Melanie — described by Heller as a “dangerous character. The more you re attracted to her, the more dangerous she becomes.” — and James Purefoy as Alfie’s old commanding officer, Captain Gulliver Troy. He also happens to be Melanie’s husband, which will add another layer of danger to Alfie’s interactions with her.But the first fresh face viewers will meet is Salt, a high value target to the Queen s league played by Edward Hogg. Though unassuming in his first few scenes, Heller noted “authoritarians come in all shapes and sizes” when asked about the character.“Everyone dismisses [someone like Salt] as too low class, too provincial, too vulgar, not a heroic enough a character. Those people can, especially in times of change, in times of conflict, push their way to the front,” Heller said. The producer noted Hogg plays both “the very real, serious threat” hidden in the character and “an amount of pantomime villainy” necessary in a show sharing its ancestry with Gotham.(Photo by Epix)And much like Harwood, Salt represents part of the rising tide of fascism within the series’ antagonists. To Heller, fascism is a tough opponent to crack as it is seductive — “What man has not pictured himself in knee-high leather boots?” he joked — and noted even Batman exhibits certain fascistic tendencies in his war on crime.“He doesn t form a political party. He doesn t make it political. He makes it personal,” Heller explained. “If you think the solution [to Gotham’s problems] is destruction, that s sort of fascism. That s the essence of it. Batman is precisely struggling with Christian charity and the old eye-for-an-eye stuff.”Paetz, meanwhile, hopes the tide of authoritarianism can subside.“Can anyone be inherently evil and therefore, will evil manifest itself in fascist forms of government throughout history? I hope the answer is no,” she said. “That people are not inherently evil, there is good, and we can nurture and fight our way out of this.”Bannon joked: “Bruno keeps writing things that keep happening in real life and we keep begging him, ‘just write a nice world where everyone gets on and it s all fine,’ but he keeps telling us that s not very interesting for a TV show.”Heller’s writing also makes the cast apprehensive about what they may find if the show ever moves to Gotham City. Paetz would like to see a kitschy America where “everybody is served by movie star.”(Photo by Epix)Aldridge admitted he wouldn t want to see the myth of America dispelled, even if it seems at odds with the U.S. that Thomas actually knows.“Whenever Thomas references Gotham, he says that it s complete chaos on the streets,” he said.Bannon, meanwhile, said, “I ve stopped trying to guess things with Pennyworth because I always get them wrong, or anything I guess is by no means as exciting as what Bruno comes up with. So who knows? I mean, I dread to think.”Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, EPIX will run four episodes across the next month. The final six episodes of season 2, which will feature the arrival of Batman’s ally Lucius Fox in larger role, will air later in 2021.Pennyworth season 2 premieres on Sunday, December 13 on Epix.On an Apple device? What it is: From director Kwang Il Han and based on the book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is a prequel spinoff film of Netflix’s hit Henry Cavill starrer from creator Lauren Schmidt that charts the monster-slaying adventures of Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir, in stunning anime. Why you should watch it: If you haven’t already read the source material, we recommend the best way to catch up for this feature is to binge the first season of The Witcher. Ambitiously violent and larger-than-life, it certainly ranks as one of Netflix’s best fantasy series and will give you all the knowledge you need to appreciate this animated vision of what came before. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf premieres August 23 on Netflix. (Season 2 of the live-action series premieres on December 17.)Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 8 hours (for the first season)ror体育app个中原因,有受限于版号的因素。

(Photo by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures / © Marvel / courtesy Everett Collection)All Brie Larson Movies Ranked by TomatometerBefore she landed at the forefront of comic-book movies with Captain Marvel, Brie Larson stood out in another superhero movie of a more hipster variety: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. That Edgar Wright-directed, Michael Cera-starring, would-be blockbuster had a cast like a who s who of up-and-coming actors, career momentum that Larson transferred into an impressive run of Certified Fresh hits. These include 21 Jump Street, Short Term 12, Kong: Skull Island, and, of course, Room, which led Larson to a Best Actress Oscar win.Between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, she directed her first feature Unicorn Store. Larson s latest is Just Mercy, co-starring Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx: See where it places in when we rank all Brie Larson movies by Tomatometer!

Ron Perlman has played some monster characters throughout his career, notably the titular Hellboy in two Guillermo del Toro–directed films about that red, horned, cigar-smoking comic book anti-hero; the grizzled gang leader Clay Morrow in FX biker drama Sons of Anarchy; and even his breakout role as Vincent from CBS s live-action Beauty and the Beast series, in which he starred opposite Linda Hamilton. With his latest series, he adds to the list. A lot of the characters that I ve played without makeup that are, you know, seemingly human are the most monstrous things I ve ever done, Perlman told Rotten Tomatoes when discussing new Peacock series, The Capture, which premieres on the launch day of NBC s new streaming service. The Capture — so incredibly well-rendered and so smart, the actor said — takes viewers deep into a highly surveilled world in which anyone with the wherewithal, and motive, can alter video footage and place a crime that never happened at the foot of a would-be criminal of their choosing. In the six-episode series, which was recently renewed by the BBC for a second season, Perlman plays Frank Napier, a CIA official leading a small team that monitors CCTV, the UK s expansive network of security cameras, in the name of upholding justice. But at what cost does such justice come where video evidence of a crime that was supposedly committed, may have been a hoax all along?(Photo by BBC/Heyday Films/Nick Wall)Perlman co-stars opposite Holliday Grainger (Patrick Melrose) as DI Rachel Carey and Callum Turner (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) as Shawn Emery, a former soldier framed for murder. With recent technological breakthroughs in deep-fake technology and the ever-growing trend of distrusting facts, the series fictional concept of Correction (the truth-altering tech featured in the series) feels both completely terrifying and absolutely plausible. [It s about] things I m personally obsessed with, in regards to the people that we look to in order to keep us safe and protected, Perlman said. How pure can we expect their motivations to be? Are their personal agendas spilling over into the things that (we hope) they do for purely ideological reasons? You know, for, hopefully, the greater good? These are all important questions to ask, especially when the news cycle is continuously recounting stories of law enforcement entities and government agencies that aren t exactly serving the people s best interests.Speaking on the series, and the many issues currently facing Americans, Perlman is quick to identify the  ripped apart nature of our politics where you don t know what you re being sold or who s selling it to you, a lot of the time. And for an actor who has been famously outspoken in his progressive beliefs on Twitter — he was briefly suspended from the platform in 2019 for comments made in a now-deleted tweet celebrating the death of Koch Industries Vice Chairman David Koch, and he recently got involved in an online scuffle with Republican Sen. Ted Cruz — his decision to play a conservative-leaning character in a questionable position of power becomes more intriguing. In The Capture, Perlman s Frank makes some callous choices and steps over the line of morality more than once in the interest of upholding national and international security. When asked if Napier is a monster, the actor has trouble giving a definitive answer. You can make an argument that Frank is so multifaceted that it s hard to figure out where the monster in him ends and the humanity begins, Perlman explained. So I mean, one of the fascinating things about trying to figure out how to play the guy is, for the whole history of the show, you ll walk away not knowing, was he a good guy? Was he a bad guy? I just don t know. (Photo by Sony Pictures)On the big screen, Perlman continues to team up with his close friend Del Toro. In the long-awaited new adaptation of Pinocchio, he plays Mangiafuoco, a character known to many as Stromboli, thanks to Walt Disney s 1940 film classic. He also appears in Paul W.S. Anderson s upcoming Monster Hunter, a big-budget movie adaptation of Capcom s action role-playing video game of the same name that stars Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa. The movie was scheduled to open this September, but has been pushed back to April 2021. Perlman, who described his role as Admiral in the flick to Comic Book Movie as a lot of chewing the scenery, was mostly mum about specific story details, but gave an impression of what to expect. I m not a gamer, so I m not familiar with the video game, Perlman said. I know that it has a huge following and huge popularity. I know that the production that Sony gave it, under the great leadership of Paul W.S. Anderson, was top draw. You know, it was just such a phenomenal experience and seemed like we were making a big-time movie — lots of titillating juicy battle scenes and chase scenes. There are a lot of high stakes, so this should be a good one to watch. And what about that a highly-publicized Twitter spat between Perlman and Cruz? The whole thing began after the U.S. Soccer Federation repealed its policy that prohibited athletes from kneeling during the national anthem as an act of protest against police brutality. The news drew ire from the likes of President Donald Trump and Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz who shamed the sports institution. Perlman soon added his two cents on Twitter, saying, The US Soccer team called and you guessed it said they couldn’t give any less of a f k about what you two dips ts think.”A follow-up tweet, directed at Gaetz and showing a photo of  Rep. Jim Jordan, a former wrestling coach accused of ignoring athletes reports of abuse by a doctor at Ohio State University, caught the attention of Cruz and sparked the war of words between the actor and the senator, who challenged Perlman to a wrestling match — with Jordan. The bizarre back-and-forth led Perlman to present a counteroffer to Cruz, promoting the idea that if the senator himself would face him in the ring, he d donate ,000 dollars to Black Lives Matter. They traded a few more barbs before things quieted down, but Perlman is still up for the challenge.Though he has made it very clear that he ll never play Hellboy on the big screen again, Perlman said he may be willing to reprise the role through voice-over in a virtual wrestling match with Cruz — perhaps in an animated special akin to, say, MTV s old Celebrity Death Match cartoon series. Would he step into Hellboy s shoes one more time for such a special occasion? Absolutely, said Perlman, laughing. [Cruz has] just said so many things that are so damaging to the concept of human discourse. He s one of the guys who has the most deleterious effect on the American consciousness, which is: He s designed to make us cynical. He s designed to make us disengaged. He s designed his whole modus operandi to say stuff that makes us into disbelievers rather than people who are rallying around some beautiful concepts that Americans pledge allegiance to. He s a diabolical villain. And so any chance I get virtually to have a smackdown with this motherf er, I would jump at the opportunity.  The Capture launches on Peacock on July 15.
Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: You clearly know your directors, and Tom McCarthy is so incredible and was just coming off Spotlight when Stillwater was coming together. Was Tom a big part of the reason that you wanted to make this project?Matt Damon: That was the main draw. I ve been hoping to work with him for a while. And then I thought the script was just beautiful and totally unique and not like any movie I ve seen before, but really had a lot of humanity. I thought the story was heartbreaking and beautiful and I really believe the dynamic between the characters, and that was before I even started researching these roughnecks and really understood the specificity of that world and how that would be brought to bear on the movie.Leaving out the fact that he was a roughneck, it s just that dynamically, the script just really worked between the characters. I just totally believed this relationship with the father and the daughter; the father is carrying all this pain and grief and shame and regret for the ways in which he s failed her and feels some level of responsibility for the life that she finds herself living and the trouble that she s in. And the terror of waking up out of years of addiction and realizing that you entirely failed this person who doesn t even count on you anymore and how heartbreaking that is.Then, getting into the specificity of that, of the roughneck thing, and going there and meeting those guys. Everything about the physicality of that character comes from these guys and this research that we did. And they could not have been more helpful, and they just gave us unbelievable access and let us parachute into their lives for a little while and look at how they live. That s really how we built the character.Rotten Tomatoes: I wanted to ask about that trip to Oklahoma to hang out with the roughnecks, because as a journalist, sometimes I know it can be awkward to cold-approach subjects and ask them questions about their lives they re not used to answering. How was that trip to see the roughnecks and talk about their lives? Was there any nervousness?Damon: Yeah. It was very much like being journalist. I mean, it s the same research trips that you do. And they were wary of us, like, You guys are making a movie about roughnecks. You Hollywood liberals are? What are your intentions? What s this movie about? Are you making fun of us? Because these are the kind of guys that normally get caricatured or stereotyped in Hollywood movies, or that the cultural elite would look down their nose at. And they know that, and they re like, Well They had to decide help us. And I think it was when they talked to us about what we were trying to do [that they opened up], when they realized that our intentions were pure and that this was a story that had incredible empathy and compassion for Bill s character. We just wanted to get the roughneck stuff right.(Photo by Jessica Forde / Focus Features)And then once they realized that, they just were great. They were just so incredibly helpful. And all of the physicality of this character came directly from those guys.Rotten Tomatoes: One last thing: Your character, like myself sometimes, has a particular taste for Subway sandwiches and is in this amazing city, Marseilles, but keeps getting Subway. Is there something American or comforting that you seek out when you re overseas, like a go-to thing that reminds you of home?Damon: Well, I think in Bill s cases, it s more that he s got a routine that he s figured out that works for him. And so then he doesn t have to go and order something in French, it s a safe routine. And so, he just goes and gets a Subway sandwich.I can definitely relate to that, being overseas and being overwhelmed by the idea of going out to try to rustle up a meal for myself when I don t speak the language. It s challenging. It can be really challenging. So, it was kind of a nod to that.Stillwater is in theaters from Friday July 30, 2021.Thumbnail image: Valery Hache/AFP via Getty Images, © Paramount, © Universal, © Warner Bros., courtesy of the Everett CollectionOn an Apple device?

When comic book writer Marv Wolfman set out to write the 1985 comic book series Crisis on Infinite Earths, he had a key goal in mind: cleaning up DC Comics’ convoluted cosmology of parallel worlds, imaginary stories, and impenetrable lore. The company was, as Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim recently put it, “flirting with bankruptcy” and there was a general sense its multiverse was a barrier to attracting new readers. So the story’s aim was to fold down DC’s conflicting ideas into something more accessible. But in talking with Wolfman, Guggenheim learned he also wanted to “make the DC Universe a bit more sophisticated” and modernize the characters for what is now known as the Bronze Age of comics, he told members of the media, including Rotten Tomatoes, during a press preview this week. But for the Arrowverse’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” five-episode crossover event, starting this Sunday on Supergirl, the goal was something different.“We’ve never felt [our] multiverse is too complex,” Guggenheim explained.Like many DC Comics crossovers, the opportunity to “fix” aspects of the individual shows will be available to their respective creative teams should they deem it necessary, of course. In terms of story, though, “Crisis” homes in on the big emotions of the original comic book storyline — a tale which is both the end of one era and the beginning of another.“We wanted the characters to go through something incredibly significant,” DC’s Legends of Tomorrow co-showrunner Keto Shimizu said. “That’s what grounds this and makes this Crisis important on a deep ‘heart’ level. It brings [the characters on each show] closer together [emotionally].”
