Netflix’s new series, Jupiter’s Legacy, is a breed apart from many superhero series. The program focuses on the Union of Justice, a group of superheroes who began working together in the 1930s, but lived well into the 21st century and now face the prospect of handing their work off to their children; a second generation of various talents, constitutions, and interests.Although some of its iconography will seem familiar, the story sets out to be a family drama of powers, resentments, high expectations, and at least one masterplan worthy of a Lex Luthor or Hydra. And viewers coming fresh to the series will find a number of unexpected things.Rotten Tomatoes spoke to some of the cast and Jupiter’s Legacy co-creator Mark Millar to determine the five things you need to know before venturing into the show.1. It Is a Generational Saga(Photo by Netflix)The notion of generational superheroes – that is, parent and child (or a close relation) sharing abilities and a costumed identity – is not exactly a new idea in comic books. Titles like Starman and The Flash dived deep into the idea in the 1990s. Also, the more recent Flash TV series broached the topic a few years ago while still fighting a villain of the year, and Superman Lois sees Clark learning how to be there for his teenage sons.But in the case of Jupiter’s Legacy, facing the reality that a younger generation needs to step up is very much the theme of the show.“[It’s] a metaphor for how you can pass on traditions, how you can pass on family values, how you can pass on love and connection,” as star Josh Duhmel, who plays the premiere hero Utopian, put it. “I think that there s a lot to be said for how you raise your kids and how important it is to connect with them or there s a good chance you lose them.”Indeed, the possibility of losing his children quickly becomes one of Utopian’s concerns.(Photo by Marni Grossman/Netflix)As the program begins, his son Brandon Sampson (Andrew Horton) – aka Paragon – makes a choice Utopian disapproves of, setting into motion a lot of soul searching among the Union and their children about what they really want for the future.“I think Brandon puts an enormous amount of pressure upon himself, which definitely doesn t help things,” Horton said when asked about Utopian’s expectations for his son. Brandon and [his sister] Chloe are told by their father that these gifts are to help other people less fortunate. That s an onus on them to use their powers for good and to maybe follow in their parents footsteps. But it s never explicitly said within the show that this is what you must do: You must be the same as us.' Nevertheless, Brandon takes onboard the idea that he should be just like his father and “trips himself up because he s a more flawed human being.”In Horton’s mind, he s kind of always going to be set up for failure when you ve got the Utopian as someone to follow. And to some extent, that fear of failure leads to the choices his sister Chloe (Elena Kampouris) and their cousins make both before the story begins and after Brandon s tactical error.2. It Uses the Concept of the Justice League as Familiar Grounding(Photo by Netflix)Although the original members of the Union have similar abilities, aspects of their look and more specialized powers will remind viewers of DC Comics’ Justice League of America. According to Millar, using that group’s dynamic over, say, the Avengers, is a completely intentional choice.“That s a perfect entry point for the mainstream audience,” he explained. “Those kinds of characters we grew up with also stretch all the way back 5,000 years to the Greek myths and then, really, the Egyptian myths, [and] in some ways go back to Sumer as well, 11,000 years ago — Babylonian myths.”The archetypal stature means a character like Utopian is immediately recognizable even if he has longish white hair and a beard when he first arrives on the scene.“The world is very, very plugged in to the idea of [this] bunch of people: You know, there s a Superman-like guy, there s a Wonder Woman–like woman, in the same way we had Zeus and Jupiter and we had Aphrodite and everything,” Millar said. “These archetypes have been around for a long time, in a way that other superheroes don t really have. There s a pantheon of gods that the Justice League really feels like [and] that people get.”Of course, testing those archetypes via their children becomes one of the key sources of tension within Jupiter’s Legacy.3. It Challenges a Very Specific Code of Superhero Conduct(Photo by Netflix)Taking their cues from pop culture antecedents like the Justice League, the first generation Union members adhere to a strict code Sheldon Sampson (Utopian s civilian name) put down during their founding nearly a century before the story begins: their powers must always be used to help others, they must never govern over the nation, and they do not kill. The code is rooted in Millar’s appreciate of the American culture he grew up experiencing via imported television, film, and music, but it also sets down three easy-to-understand concepts that, nonetheless, lead to a lot of heartache when one must live by them.Duhamel, as himself, admitted he has some issues with the code, but absolutely agrees with his character that super-powered people should not use their powers to force a role in government.“If you give somebody [that] much power, that s just dangerous. They should just be there to serve,” he said.Nevertheless, the prohibition against killing left Duhamel with more angst because he can see situations where lethal force is understandable. One hypothetical he offered will strike a chord with parents: “If somebody is going to take my son out, I m going to take them out first, no matter what.”Conversations with the writers and producers put him more at ease with Sheldon’s absolutely belief that there is always a better way and, as viewers will see, Sheldon always adheres to the code.(Photo by Marni Grossman/Netflix)Mike Wade, who plays original Union member Fitz Small (aka The Flare), thinks his character’s appreciation of the code changes across the 60 or so years he operates as a superhero.“Fitz, I would say, sees Sheldon as an older brother; somebody that Fitz looks up to. A lot of people look up to Sheldon, he explained. So initially, Fitz felt that [same way about the code as Sheldon], but through battle and through sacrifice, [he] might ve changed and might not feel so strongly about the code like a lot of other people do.”Tenika Davis plays Fitz’s daughter Petra – the new Flare – and represents the younger generation on the issue.“Things like the code have to be amended and changed as things develop and grow,” Davis said. “I think the code is one of those things that is a bit outdated. So we respect it for the foundation it provided, but at the same time we re like, Yeah, it probably needs a few updates.' (Photo by Steve Wilkie/Netflix)And, as viewers will see, there is no easy answer on how to respect the code or augment it to meet the challenges both generations of the Union face in the series.“I think it s such a complex issue,” Leslie Bibb added. Bibb plays Grace Sampson, a hero in her own right — the beloved Lady Liberty — and Utopian’s wife. While both the actress and her character see the code as a way of preventing the supers from becoming judge, jury, and executioner, they also understand why some of the younger generation will chafe against it as they face more powerful and ruthless adversaries.“I don t think it s black and white. I think that that s sort of what Grace s dilemma is [as the story unfolds],” she said. “I think that is a cool thing about the show. It doesn t really give you an answer. It poses these questions and hopefully, you walk away and you start thinking, and maybe it starts a conversation about something bigger.”4. It Is Not Ashamed of Superhero Costumes(Photo by Steve Wilkie/Netflix)Another cool thing about the show: it literally wears the pulpy inspiration of the 1930s and ’40s superheroes on its sleeves. Sure, the younger generation may go for the black leather look of modern heroes, but the original Union members proudly wear garish colors into the 21st century.“When I think about my favorite costume ever, costume design ever, in a movie, I would say it s [from the] 1978 Superman,” Millar said. The suit, designed by Yvonne Blake, highlighted the design worn by the Man of Steel in the comics during the 30 years prior to the film. “She didn t really rethink it. She just thought, ‘What does Superman look like?’ and just made that work in real life. We did the same with this, we made it look like the heroes of that period. So the Golden Age heroes would have looked weird if they d had armor or oddly textured, metallic costumes, he said. They just look like superheroes in the very traditional sense, which I love. Nevertheless, the costumes may look strange to viewers as the program begins, but remember: the first generation Union members still represent a 1930s ideal of superheroes.5. It Will Surprise Readers of the Comic Book(Photo by Netflix)While the series is quite faithful to the comics – and its companion piece, Jupiter’s Circle – it will contain a few surprising changes as it unfolds across its eight episodes. But even before those developments transpire, readers may find they like Sheldon’s brother Walter (Ben Daniels) a lot more than they did in the comics.Although Daniels denied any conscious attempt to bring viewers to the character s side, he definitely wanted to convey “what it was like to have Clint Eastwood as your brother, who sails through life when you find it incredibly difficult.”In both the comic book and the show, Walter tends to be the first to naysay Sheldon – even after they get their powers – but as Daniels saw it, “He feels very downtrodden. He s a highly volatile person and highly sensitive person, and he has trouble regulating those emotions.”And though much of his anxiety melts away after his powers give him an almost universal telepathic range, the scars of his younger days remain.“I don t think it s about making him sympathetic. Instead of making the character his own, the actor mirrored a lot of what Gervais had done as Office boss David Brent in the UK version. The character wasn t likable, the chemistry with the rest of the cast fell flat, and the comedic story struggled to connect with audiences.Luckily for everyone, NBC gave the show another chance. Thanks to the theatrical success of Judd Apatow s The 40 Year Old Virgin, Carell s celebrity status got a major boost. Suddenly, The Office had a name actor in the title role. And in season 2, Carell gave Michael Scott a welcome sense of empathy and heart, helping to off-set his awfully awkward, inappropriate personality.That story tweak led the charge. Soon, The Office became a wonderful balancing act with its slapstick pranks and cringe comedy on one side and some heartfelt, dramatic story elements on the other. Obviously, Carell s newfound celebrity status helped the program get a slew of eyes on it, but the show featured a whole cavalcade of now-marquee Hollywood talent who were fresh-faced newcomers when the workplace comedy first hit the small screen.Dabbling in an experimental, improv-infused work environment, the actors and writers on the show were able to play and find moments and scenes that surprised and delighted fans the world over. Take the kiss between Michael and Oscar in The Gay Witch Hunt, for instance. That bit wasn t scripted, but it was necessary to take things up-a-notch. And it s just one of many examples that make up this collective creative experience of putting The Office together. Kaling didn t just star in the series as Kelly Kapoor, she was also a writer on the series – along with her on-screen beau B.J. Novak, who played Ryan in the series. Showrunner Jeremy Carver said the series dips into several different versions of the characters in the series.“A great jumping off point is the Grant Morrison run in the ’90s,” Carver told reporters at a Television Critics Association winter press tour panel in Los Angeles over the weekend. “We dip into the Silver Age where we are seeing the Celsius and Lodestone characters. We’re going to see some other characters that have graced over the years, such as Danny the Street. We’re going to see one of my more beloved characters, the Beard Hunter.”While most of DC’s television properties live on the CW, land of the perma-shirtless, sexy twentysomethings, this cast includes decidedly non-twentysomethings Brendan Fraser, Timothy Dalton, and Alan Tudyk. But star Sandra Oh told reporters at the show’s TCA panel that the transition between the two was seamless.“Emerald and Phoebe are friends and had been friends for a long time,” Oh said. “I feel like they have a kinship — the sensibility, where they come from, their humor, their style. And Emerald has her own voice entirely, but it really moves from one hand to a similar hand.”When the series comes back to BBC America on April 7, it’ll pick up approximately 30 seconds after the events of the season 1 finale, and Eve (Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) will be at odds once again. The duo said that their characters’ relationship will definitely evolve in season 2.“I think what is most interesting about Eve’s stabbing Villanelle at the end of series 1 is Villanelle’s reaction to that, and just how emotionally she perceives that. I actually really like the fact that we can’t put our finger on it.”New Knightfall Star Mark Hamill on the Ties Between the Knights Templar and Star Wars’ JediThe Star Wars film saga s Luke Skywalker, Mark Hamill, joins the second season of History’s Knightfall as Talus, a tough, wise, hardened, and devout master who trains new members of the Knights Templar and who spent 10 years being tortured as a POW during a Crusade. Hamill told reporters at a TCA panel for the show that he never intended taking on a project like Knightfall, but was hooked after watching a few episodes.“I just thought, ‘I’ve never been offered anything like this before.’ I mean, I’d never done a character quite like this before — a religious zealot, a man of deep convictions, and, yet, such a paradox, Hamill said. He’s lecturing the troops and he says, ‘Once you become a Templar knight you shall become God’s executioners.’ How could there be such a thing? I thought, ‘Thou shalt not kill.’ But that’s the thing, I was flattered that they would think of me in such a diverse character part, and I thought, ‘Oh, I have to do this. I really do have to do this,’ to be part of a largely British cast and in a period drama like this, which I’d never done before. That’s what I look for: challenges to try not to repeat yourself, and this was certainly a challenge.”It’s no secret that the Knights Templar inspired another secret order Hamill has been a part of (Star Wars’ Jedi, duh). But the ties between the two actually didn’t occur to him until he’d already said yes.“I didn’t really think it through, but the truth of the matter is that I’m sure George Lucas came from so many different inspirations of his own, both from the movies and literature, Hamill said. He was probably thinking more of King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable, because it was more idealized and glamorous, certainly, than the Templar Knights, but there’s no question that his inspiration was rooted, partially, in this mythology.”Pennyworth Creators Explain Why Batman’s Butler Needs an Origin Series(Photo by Epix)Fox’s Batman prequel series, Gotham, is coming to an end this year. But more pre-Batman stories will continue to be told on television in Epix’s Pennyworth, an origin story about the early life of Batman’s butler, Alfred Pennyworth (played by Jack Bannon).“It’s really the chance to make him the center of a story and explain that journey: How did he get from being a young SAS soldier to being a butler in America? And it also gives us a chance to create a real world around him, a world in England that fits the whole DC universe,” executive producer Bruno Heller said. “It’s surprising to all of us the depth and range that you can go to with this character.”While the character’s creator, Bob Kane, set the 1930s as Alfred’s origin, but the Epix series is set in the 1960s. Executive producer Danny Cannon said that as someone from London, that seemed like the most dynamic time period to set a show.“It’s after the war, before things change for good. You could see the change in the air. Things were happening, culturally, artistically, that — it was an inspiring time, I think, that English people always revisit,” Cannon said. “So, to say that that was the foundations of which we were starting with and then making it 13 degrees more DC, 13 degrees darker [is when the series] really came alive for us.”The Story Behind NOS4A2’s Title(Photo by Zach Dilgard/AMC)The people involved in AMC’s new supernatural horror series NOS4A2 know that the title (pronounced like “Nosferatu”) is a little bit out of the ordinary. But the series, which stars Zachary Quinto as a vampire of sorts who feeds on the souls of children, is based on the book of the same name by Joe Hill (who happens to be the son of Stephen King), and series creator Jami O’Brien said the cast and producers are going to do their best to educate the audience about it.“One of the wonderful things about the book is that there are a lot of word games in it. One of the characters is a Scrabble master and librarian. And I think that the title itself, you know, Manx [played by Quinto] talks about it deeper in the book than where we get in the first season, but it’s a joke. And it’s also a puzzle,” O’Brien said. “And I think both of those things speak to the humor of the book and the humor of the character and is kind of a fun twist on the vampire genre, you know? Charlie Manx is a kind of vampire, but he’s not any kind of vampire that we’ve seen before. He doesn’t suck blood. He sucks souls. So, I think it’s a little irreverent, and I think — I’m glad that we have it because I think it’s a lot of fun.”

In June 2019, Disney’s Pixar will head to infinity and beyond, once again, with the release of Toy Story 4. Although it will be nine years since the last film in the franchise, bringing back the family favorite characters voiced by Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and others will no doubt result in a box office smash that – if history repeats – will warm even the coldest critic’s heart (all three of the first Toy Story  have perfect or near-perfect Tomatometers, and Toy Story 3 was even nominated for the Best Picture Oscar). But surefire revenue and review predictions aside, what do we actually know about the new film? Let’s explore what’s already been revealed.HEY HOWDY HEY! That’s been its own saga. (Photo by Carole Bethuel)There has never been (and there will likely never be) a Cannes Film Festival like the one that just wrapped. Being the first major festival to conduct an in-person fest since the pandemic pause in 2020 meant all eyes were on the red carpet of the French Rivera; the Venice Film Festival had a scaled-down affair in late 2020, but it paled in comparison to what we saw on the Croisette. From the COVID-19 protocol restrictions and those same restrictions being ignored to the record low attendance, everything combined to give us the most stress-free year in recent memory. Those lucky enough to make their way to Cannes found tickets easily available and screenings just half full. Most of the galas – which previously were so packed that even people with tickets were turned away – frequently did not have enough attendees to open the balcony of the Grand Lumiere Theater.Still, despite all the changes, the 74th Cannes Film Festival was as it has always been, filled with exceptional characters, jaw-dropping camera work, astounding debuts, equally astounding disappointments, a little controversy, and best of all, the most impressive and avant-garde films in world cinema.Trying to pull a theme from this year s fest would be a difficult affair, given the varied selection. Still, we could easily discern that the festival programmers crafted a program tailored to an audience that has been trapped at home under economic uncertainty and grappling with the mental and physical wounds of 18 months spent battling COVID-19. This year we had narrative tales that mirrored what we have seen in our home communities: broken people looking for belonging, tales of isolation and regret, stories that articulate the yearning for family, and a longing for love – or, more precisely, lust. Nostalgic needle drops and narcissistic men may be the only things that rivaled the amount of sex we saw on screen the past few days.To put it plainly, this might have been the horniest lineup ever to grace the French festival. Red Rocket, Bergman Island, A Tale of Love and Desire, and Mothering Sunday all centered on sexed-up love stories. At the same time, films like Annette, Benedetta, and Palme d Or winner Titane all featured sex scenes that will have audiences talking through awards season. But sprinkled among these amorous offerings were a handful of entries that will be significant players in the 21- 22 awards season. Who knows? Julia Ducournau made history when she became just the second female director to win the top prize at Cannes; perhaps she could also capture audiences like Bong Joon-ho s Palme d Or and Best Picture winner Parasite did in 2019. We will just have to wait and see. In the meantime, read on for our picks for the six best films we saw at the Cannes Film Festival.

Charles Dickens  A Christmas Carol is one of the most-adapted tales in the history of the English language, and Steven Knight, creator of gritty period series Peaky Blinders and Taboo, is the latest talent to have taken on the task.We all know the story: crotchety miser Ebenezer Scrooge has a Christmas Eve night visitation from his dead former partner Jacob Marley, who warns him of three ghosts who will attend him as he walks through visions of Christmases past, present, and future.This new FX presentation, directed by Nick Murphy (The Awakening), stars Guy Pearce as Scrooge and Andy Serkis as a grumpy Ghost of Christmas Past and promises a darker take on the 1843 novella that made a superstar of its author: A Christmas Carol is a spine-tingling immersion into Scrooge s dark night of the soul, the promotional materials promise. It is a darker retelling. There s no question, Serkis told Rotten Tomatoes. It s a unique retelling in that respect because Scrooge in this is not some sort of old miser character. He s actually a tough businessmen who is in denial and doesn t want to really engage with his own moral relativism. We caught up with the stars to get a feel for the new adaptation — and it indeed feels scary. Here are five ways this Christmas Carol one-ups previous efforts.1. This Cool Scrooge Resonates With Modern Audiences(Photo by Kurt Iswarienko/FX)Scrooge is not as crotchety here as in previous interpretations of the character; in fact, the character may resemble more real-life people than ever before. Pearce offered a personal assessment of his character. They really wanted somebody this time who still had been affected in life the way that we know Scrooge has been, but that his demeanor and his presence in the world was more of a businessman, as a leader who is a kind of a cocky, confident, swaggering kind of asshole, basically, Pearce told Rotten Tomatoes. I think it was important for Nick, our director, and for Steven, our writer, to get away from the crotchety old man who exhibits on the surface the pain and damage that he s experienced in his life. And the fact that he s turned away from the world and plays somebody who s actually up front to the world and says, Come on, bring it on. Bring on your questions about who I am and what it is, because I ve got a really good response for you. And kind of like that, be a little bit more affronting and aggressive. And so, in a way, we still get to the point where we drag him through his past, and we make him look at the things he s done to people, and we crack open the soul that is a damaged soul. 2. This Ghost of Christmas Past Plays Dirty(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)But his Scrooge will face a harder fight in Knight s version, Pearce confirmed: It s a tougher journey because the Ghost of Christmas Past is a really hard nut to crack. The Ghost of Christmas Past is jaded, the character description offers. He’s been sent to make lost souls repent before, why should Scrooge be any different? He prods and pokes where it hurts, transforming himself into those known to his charge, finding a place of pain, shame and self-knowledge. But can he get Scrooge to recognize himself, and repent? 3. The Ghost of Christmas Present Has a Much More Personal Relationship With Scrooge(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)Charlotte Riley appears as the Ghost of Christmas Present, while Jason Flemyng is the Ghost of Christmas Future. Both ghosts are updated here with new twists on the characters. She plays my sister who has died some years before, Pearce said, and she has now come back as the Ghost of Christmas Present. And — particularly after the ruthlessness of Andy Serkis Ghost of Christmas Past, who shape-shifts into all sorts of characters through my past, and he s really tough on me — then she comes in as the Ghost of Christmas Present, and it s my long lost dead sister, so it s so emotional and so touching and painful. And then it s capped off with Jason playing sort of ruthless again, but silent like the silent-killer kind of attitude, as the Ghost of Christmas Future. 4. Steven Knight s Take Is Indeed Chilling(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)One of the most unsettling features of the new story is how closely it hews to issues — and personalities — we face today, which is a very intentional choice. Serkis said he knew he was in for something special when he heard Knight was attached. When I heard that there was another version of Christmas Carol being made, I kind of thought, Wow, OK. Again? Another one?' he said. But as soon as I knew that Steven Knight was writing it, I knew that now, This is going to be an interesting take, because I knew this was going to be the beginning of a journey into his exploration of Dickens in other stories as well, which is the case. Knight and the stars had previously talked about stripping down the story, which Serkis expounded on for Rotten Tomatoes. When we say stripping down, it was more about not getting bogged down in the sort of tropes of a costume drama, Victorian drama, and allowing it to live afresh as a really contemporary piece of writing, he said. And therefore, and so, even though you re what you, of course, allowing the visuals, you do that work, you want to feel that the character is alive and very present and not sort of imagining what it might be like to have been alive in the 19th century. You re not doing that. You re actually saying these are people, people are people, and we still have the same issues, problems. We need to unpack the difficulties of the human condition in this, in a very modern way to make this story resonate with a fresh audience. 5. Serkis Costuming Challenge Continues Here Even If He s Not a CG-Enhanced Character(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)Serkis, known especially for his CG-enhanced performances like Gollum and Caesar in the Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes franchises, faced a different sort of challenge here. [The costume] was so heavy. It was like going from the sublime to the ridiculous. I couldn t possibly have more makeup or costume to bear, but it was great, actually. It was nice to play a character in the flesh, and it was a particularly challenging character, not least because it was like sensory deprivation actually wearing this costume. I had long locks of hair and an additional beard. I had an eye that I couldn t see out of. I had scars all over my face. I had long nails, so once I got into costume, I was able to kind of get into the character and stay there. I had to. To compound his costuming issues, they filmed in summer. It was pretty brutal at times, Serkis said. I just had to at least take the hat off and get the top layer off as much as I could. But — actor problems.
