Often underutilized, sometimes misunderstood, and frequently underappreciated (in our opinion), Lindo has built a formidable career marked by standout turns as intimidating gangsters, forceful authority and father figures, and, lately, a silver-tongued lawyer. His imposing frame, deep and instantly distinctive voice, have imbued intemperate characters with refined strength, and he s worked with some of the greatest filmmakers of our time. In other words: His is an almost textbook Hollywood heavyweight career, one you would expect to be punctuated with Oscar noms and hardware on the mantel. And yet Even the basic facts of his career have been misconstrued. Following his first two film roles, the 1975 John Candy comedy Find the Lady and the sequel to American Graffiti — More American Graffiti — he returned to the stage for a decade, shining in productions of Macbeth and A Raisin in the Sun; it was a move away from film that many misinterpreted as a conscious choice. “That s not a decision that I made,” he says, laughing, while he shakes his head in disbelief. Elsewhere, reports have claimed that Lindo played West Indian Archie in Spike Lee s Malcolm X as manically depressed: “Which is completely inaccurate, he told Rotten Tomatoes, chuckling. The moral of the story is don t listen to the internet. After a stellar 55-year career during which he s brought solemnity to stage, television, and film, an Oscar nomination has eluded Lindo. It’s a gap in his biography that could change after his searing turn as Paul, a Vietnam War vet devastatingly gripped by his past ghosts, in Lee’s 2020 epic Da 5 Bloods. Concerning four Black war veterans returning to Vietnam to recover the remains of Stormin’ Norman (Chadwick Boseman), their fallen commander, and the C.I.A. gold they left buried, Da 5 Bloods not only plays host to arguably the best performance of Lindo’s career, but once more highlights the veteran actor’s distinct ability to bring pathos to complicated, tough-seeming men.Lindo performances may look effortless, but they are wrought from his dedication to craft and his hard work. Through careful research, practicing the hobbies of his subjects, and learning their psychologies, he builds his characters from the floor up. “I m a man of the theater, Lindo says. It involves doing everything that I can to stay as connected as I can to the material. THE DELROY LINDO ESSENTIALS: SPIKE LEE AND THE CIDER HOUSE RULES(Photo by © Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection)The stars first aligned for Delroy Lindo while auditioning to be debonair Harlem ‘numbers’ gangster West Indian Archie in Lee’s Malcolm X almost 30 years ago. “The actors had been waiting a long time, he says. I remember Sam[uel L. Jackson] was there in the waiting area. Avery Brooks was there waiting. Denzel Washington, who starred as X, and Lindo earned their acting stripes together as classmates at the American Conservatory Theater in 1977. “Denzel saw the very first scene I ever did in acting school, and I saw the very first scene he ever did,” he says. Washington read opposite Lindo for his Malcolm X audition, a pairing he believes proved advantageous: “It helped that we knew each other. Not from the standpoint of Denzel helping me get the part. I don t mean that at all. But we were both familiar with each other as actors.”Malcolm X inspired a trusting relationship between Lindo and Lee that extended to future collaborations on 1994’s Crooklyn and 1995’s Clockers. In the former, he depicted a father and struggling musician, Woody, barely holding together a destitute Brooklyn family after his wife’s untimely death; for the Brooklyn-set cut-throat gangster flick, Clockers, wherein he portrayed a Fagin-inspired drug lord to a group of young dealers, Lindo suggested impromptu additions to Lee’s script.(Photo by © Universal/courtesy Everett Collection)To show that his Rodney cared for his teenage drug dealers, Lindo requested a scene in which the kingpin helped a pusher with their homework. He suggested another scene, inspired by Richard Price’s original novel, involving the teens racing after Rodney and a rival cop Andre (Keith David). While neither made the film, Lee shot the scenes. “If you come to Spike with a thought or an idea that is not in the script that you feel will enhance the narrative, if there s time and space and money, he ll film it,” Lindo notes.His trio of seminal performances with Lee showed Lindo’s unique ability to humanize morally questionable characters. It was an instrumental skill targeted with devastating accuracy as the frustratingly complicated apple picker Mr. Rose in Lasse Hallström’s moving coming-of-age story, The Cider House Rules. It was a role Lindo initially turned down. “I had lunch with Hallström, and at the end of the lunch, he said something like, ‘Well, you know, the part is the part.’ And I remember saying, ‘God bless you. Once attached to the project, a familiar inkling seized him: “I did feel the work was going well in that film. I had a similar feeling on Malcolm X and on Da 5 Bloods. It s a feeling of ‘this feels right.’ There s a rhythm, there s a groove that we re in.”Still, Mr. Rose was a deeply flawed and challenging character to play. A warm friend to the orphaned Homer (Tobey Maguire) during World War II, he’s revealed as a pedophile who rapes and impregnates his own daughter Rose Rose (Erykah Badu). “In preparing to play that part I spoke with two doctors, he says. They both said to me, separately from each other, that in sexually predatory childhood trauma, invariably, the victims protect the perpetrators. Because – not all the time, but frequently – the victims tend to misinterpret the attention of the perpetrators as real love. So I then took that information and I focused on the love point. That was really the only way that I could play that part.”FAN FAVORITES: FAST CARS, GANGSTERS, AND THE IMPACT OF FAME(Photo by ©Buena Vista Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)Lindo brought the same laser focus to crafting his characters in big-budget action flicks as he had in prestige dramas and on the stage. On Dominic Sena’s high-octane thriller Gone in Sixty Seconds, in which he plays a detective tracking a gang of Nicolas Cage-led car thieves, Lindo took stunt driving lessons for the film’s exhilarating and hairpin-turn–filled car chases.For Romeo Must Die, Jet Li’s martial arts action vehicle, he dabbled in golf to develop Isaak, underworld father to Aaliyah s Trish. “Everybody says, ‘Oh my God, when you pick up a golf club, you re hooked’ – Courtney Vance said it to me, Lindo tells us, smirking as he recalls his brief dalliance with the sport. “One time I was on a range in Los Angeles. I hit the ball and it was really true. It sailed elegantly, majestically through the air. I said to myself, This must be what causes golfers to become golf addicts. While the actor has plenty of blockbusters to his name, he remains comfortably grounded. Sudden fame, on occasions, can obscure an actor’s prior hard-fought work. Lindo remembers first collaborating with James Gandolfini in 1995 on Barry Sonnenfeld’s Get Shorty, a gangster comedy about a Miami mobster and shyster embroiling themselves in the movie biz, and then re-teaming with The Sopranos actor years later on the Robert Redford-helmed military prison drama, The Last Castle.“It was really fascinating for me to watch how others reacted to him in the context of this major stardom. I remember the director referring to Gandolfini as, and I m paraphrasing right now, ‘One of the most brilliant actors he had ever seen, ” Lindo says. “It was instructive, in terms of what happens when you get that one part that just elevates you into this other sphere. Essentially, you re the same guy, except you ve done this extraordinary work, and now people look at you completely differently.”FRESHEST WORK: A RENAISSANCE BY WAY OF STREAMING AND GETTING BACK WITH SPIKE(Photo by ©Walt Disney Co./courtesy Everett Collection)By way of The Simpsons and Robot Chicken, Lindo periodically explored voice acting, but his most well-known animated appearance, which came with a distinct challenge, can be found in Pixar’s Up. In the beloved Pete Docter film he plays a derpy rottweiler companion to the villainous explorer Charles Muntz (Christopher Plummer), who s hunting the grieving and cynical Carl and a vibrant flightless bird.“That was a completely different experience, because there was no material. There literally were drawings: This is what your character looks like, this is what this scene is,” he says. “To their credit, the director and the producers on Up were assuring me that what I was doing was right on. But in terms of the internal process, it felt slightly disconnected. It involves much more of putting oneself at the mercy of other people. That s hard.”(Photo by © CBS All Access)While speaking to the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theater Dance, in 2016, Lindo made mention of a screenplay he has written about his mother’s life as part of the Windrush generation – the people who arrived in the UK from the Caribbean from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. “I have every intention of continuing to work on it and finishing that story because it s a really important story. But I haven t had a chance to actually sit down at the computer recently and actually work on the script,” he says. “If the stars line up, knock on wood, I ll be directing a film at the end of this year. Also my intention is to direct my screenplay.”The ever-busy Lindo experienced a career resurgence in the late 2010s with a Critics’ Choice-nominated performance in the Certified Fresh first season of legal drama, The Good Fight, one of the first series to launch on CBS All Access (now Paramount+). His four-year run as the sober, dignified managing partner Adrian Boseman reminded audiences of Lindo’s gravitas. He compared the sequence to West Indian Archie’s final scene in Malcolm X, wherein the enfeebled former gangster is cared for by his former pupil, X. “Similarly, in Bloods that scene completes Paul’s arc in a beautiful, tender, and also revelatory way. I get to reveal in no uncertain terms, clearly, my love for David, my acknowledgement that all of the crap that has happened in our relationship was not his fault. An already iconic scene set in an Apocalypse Now-themed club, in which Lindo and co-stars perform the Soul Train line dance, has introduced Lindo to a new generation – via GIFs and memes. “My son, a few months ago, said, ‘Man, dad, you re blowing up the internet. Look, look,’” he says, clearly amused. “[The scene] was totally impromptu. We had shot the scenes of us being at the table with the Vietnamese guys staring at us. Given that Sony Pictures has scheduled Venom 2 for release next year (10/2/2020), it probably shouldn t be surprising that the studio indeed moved quickly this week to lock in Andy Serkis as the sequel s director. Serkis has also previously co-starred as the villain Klaw (spelled Klaue in the movies) in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther, and it s not yet known whether he will also be taking a role in Venom 2. Serkis made his directorial debut in 2017 with Breathe, and also directed last year s Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. Although Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey) is currently credited as the writer of the Venom sequel, Serkis was quoted this week as saying that the film s star, Tom Hardy, is very involved with the writing with Kelly Marcel of the new story. As revealed by the mid-credits bumper in Venom, Woody Harrelson is expected to be the big bad in Venom 2 as the symbiote-powered serial killer Carnage.3. GEMMA CHAN MAY REPRISE HER CAPTAIN MARVEL ROLE IN MARVEL S THE ETERNALS (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection) Ever since Marvel Studios second film, The Incredible Hulk, included Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been built on the inclusion in (almost) every film of elements from other movies in the franchise. Until this week, the only apparent connections that next year s The Eternals had to previous films was that Knowhere (from Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War) was built out of the skull of one of the Celestials, and that Peter Quill s father (Kurt Russell as Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) was himself a Celestial, one of which is expected to be the threat in The Eternals. Another possible connection was revealed this week with the news that Gemma Chan is now in talks with Marvel to co-star in The Eternals. Her role hasn t been confirmed yet, but Gemma Chan also played the Kree warrior Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel (other actors have played multiple roles, but it s relatively rare). Irish actor Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk) is also reportedly up for an unknown role in The Eternals, which is scheduled for release on November 6, 2020.4. DISNEY CEO CONFIRMS PLANET OF THE APES REMAINS A TOP PRIORITY FRANCHISE (Photo by © 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)As Disney was putting the finishing touches on acquiring the 20th Century Fox film properties, the focus from most writers (and rightly so, arguably) was on properties like Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Avatar, but the Fox catalog also includes Alien, Die Hard, Ice Age, and  Kingsman. One of the other properties that Fox has had success with since 2011 was the rebooted Planet of the Apes, which as a trilogy had a domestic tally of 2 million (and a worldwide total of over .68 billion). Given those numbers, this week s news is probably a non-story, but it s still interesting. While talking about Disney s future plans for their Fox properties this week, CEO Bob Iger for the first time specifically mentioned Planet of the Apes as a priority franchise for the studio. Unfortunately, this news also needs to be phrased in correlation to the rest of Fox s development slate, which is reportedly being flushed to focus on bigger, higher profile titles and less on mid-range movies like this week s The Art of Racing in the Rain.5. IDRIS ELBA AND LUCAS FROM STRANGER THINGS SADDLE UP AS CONCRETE COWBOYS (Photo by Michael Gibson/STX Entertainment)Now that Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw is in theaters, and his work on Cats is complete, Idris Elba is ready for his next film. Until this week, that was expected to be The Suicide Squad, which starts filming in September, but instead, Elba is also squeezing in a smaller film in this summer. That movie is called Concrete Cowboys, and it will tell the true story of the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club, a non-profit organization devoted to inner-city horsemanship in north Philadelphia. Idris Elba s estranged son in Concrete Cowboys will be played by Caleb McLaughlin, who is currently best known for his role as Lucas Sinclair in Netflix s hit series Stranger Things. Concrete Cowboys was also the title of a late 1970s TV show starring Jerry Reed, but the two are otherwise unrelated. Elba and McLaughlin will also be joined in Concrete Cowboys by Byron Bowers (The Chi), Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us), and Lorraine Toussaint (Selma).6. WESLEY SNIPES AND LESLIE JONES ARE COMING 2 AMERICA (Photo by Warner Bros.)We ve known for a while that Paramount Pictures had scheduled the Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall sequel Coming 2 America for December 18, 2020 (up against the video game adaptation Uncharted and the remakes of Dune and West Side Story), but it wasn t until this week that casting news really ramped up. The stars returning from the original 1988 comedy include James Earl Jones, John Amos reprising his role as the owner of the Scottish-themed McDowell s fast food restaurant, and Louie Anderson as a McDowell s employee. The new cast members will include Wesley Snipes as General Izzi, the military dictator of a neighboring nation, Saturday Night Live star Leslie Jones, Kiki Layne as Prince Akeem s American daughter, and rapper Rick Ross.7. REMAKES OF HOME ALONE AND NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM TO DEBUT ON DISNEY+(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Ever since it was first announced last year, we ve known that the upcoming Disney+ streaming service would be the home for some of Disney s live action remakes, including Lady and the Tramp and The Sword in the Stone. This week, we learned that Disney+ will also be the destination for several remakes of some of the 20th Century Fox properties that Disney acquired earlier this year. Although there may be (and probably will be) others, the four titles specifically mentioned were Home Alone, Cheaper by the Dozen, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Night at the Museum. With the possible exception of Night at the Museum, these titles fit right in with the theme of Disney focusing their theatrical efforts on big movies. For example, back in 2002, we first heard about plans for a remake of the 1974 crime comedy Uptown Saturday Night, which originally featured the trio of Harry Belafonte, Bill Cosby, and Sidney Poitier. At that point, Will Smith had been attached to both produce and star in the remake, but in the 17 years since, Smith dropped out (he s still one of the remake s producers). In the last week, we heard first that Uptown Saturday Night will be directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Dope, Brown Sugar), and then that it is now Kevin Hart who is attached to star. It s not yet known who might join Hart in the remake, but an easy guess might be one of Hart s frequent costars, like maybe Ice Cube or Dwayne Johnson.9. If that is where you fall, you might also be surprised to discover that After earned nearly million from a budget of just million. Having said that, only million of that was earned domestically, suggesting that After was more successful overseas. Regardless, the film apparently did well enough for its producers to move forward with plans for a sequel called After We Collided, based on another novel in the YA series by author Anna Todd. Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin are both expected to return for the sequel, which will be directed by Roger Kumble (Cruel Intentions) when it starts filming later this month.Like this? There he was as a thoughtful father in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk and as the even-keeled bandleader in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom; there he was, too, dodging Walkers in Fear the Walking Dead and impressing in meaty roles on The Knick and Euphoria — the diner-set special “Trouble Don t Last Always” is still breaking hearts. If you hadn t seen his earlier work, marked by the kind of standout smaller roles that get major filmmakers calling, it was as if one of the most exciting new talents of his generation had come out of nowhere. Of course, that wasn’t the story for the man himself. “I feel like I’m a turtle,” Domingo says. “I ve been on the slow crawl, just working, and being there and always doing something outside the box for myself. It s been slow and steady, to be honest, it hasn t been a sudden overnight sensation.” The patient Domingo continues to explode in 2021, reaching new levels of acclaim and notoriety with two of his most interesting and challenging roles to date: In June, he explored new and villainous terrain, portraying a violent, code-switching pimp in Janicza Bravo’s off-the-wall road trip dramedy, Zola; this month, he delivers yet another invigorating multidimensional performance in director Nia DaCosta s socially conscious slasher film, Candyman. With both characters he hopes to further show not just the breadth of his range but the depth of his work. “If you see me in Beale Street, yes, it s probably a bit more in alignment to the Colman that they know in some way, Domingo says. But if you see Zola and Candyman, you know that s not the truth. You can actually see the craftsmanship.” The crawl began, as it does for many of Domingo s caliber, in the theater where he wrote, directed, and acted, breaking out in the Tony-winning rock musical Passing Strange in the late 2000s and eventually winning the Tony for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for The Scottsboro Boys. A slew of TV and film work followed, with an enviable roster of major award-winning directors drawn to him like a magnet: Steven Spielberg (Lincoln), Steven Soderbergh (The Knick), Ava DuVernay (Selma), George C. Wolfe (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), and Jenkins among them. He believes there’s an element those creators have in common: kindness. “It s a spirit of true collaboration,” Domingo says, people who want you to be in the room to help elevate this thing that’s on the page.” A queer Black man, the actor balances portraying gay men on shows like The Big Gay Sketch Show against men who are coded straight: Civil Rights activist Reverend Ralph Abernathy in Selma, a swinging bandleader in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, an empathetic father If Beale Street Could Talk — calm, guiding forces. That diversity has always been intentional. “I believe I can do horror, do musicals and plays and leading men and character roles because I decided that, he says. “I don t let the industry tell me what I can do. Consider his turn as X, a vicious pimp and sex trafficker in the comedy-nightmare road movie, Zola, based on the viral 2015 Twitter thread by A’ziah King (a.k.a. “Zola”). “When Janicza offered me that role, I had just come off of Beale Street and I thought: Well, what has she seen in my repertoire that would make her think that I could play this role?,” he recalls. “A lot of times [people] try to put you in the boxes of what you are known for. They want you to regurgitate another version of that. But Janicza and Nia DaCosta both knew that there was so much more to me than that.”The actor known for a reserved, smoky-voiced paternalism relished playing the ostentatious X. He built the character from the ground up, using King’s 148 tweets as inspiration, while adding his own embellishments, such as X’s flashy clothes and lone hazel contact lens, an idea he got from seeing a Nigerian-American sporting the look in New York City. “Everything about X was a little too much: His idea of wealth; his idea of having agency in the world, Domingo says. Everything was a show, from the crocodile shoes to the Versace shirts. I did a lot of research on pimp and pimp culture, whether reading biographies or having conversations with people in the sex industry and finding out about the relationships between pimps and clientele.” Domingo is terrifying in every moment he appears on screen in Zola: He leans on his star persona in early scenes, imbuing X with heaps of charm, only to frighteningly turn – and code-switch to a menacing West Indian accent – during the film’s caustic second half. Yet even after watching that performance, his casting as the enigmatic William Burke in Candyman might have still come as a shock for some audiences. My sister would take me to see horror. I didn t like either one. I probably would be happier seeing Bambi, which is a terrifying movie, too.” The Brian De Palma film’s ending – that infamous hand shooting up from the grave – never left him. “From then on, when I walked past the movie theater on the way to school, there was a big poster of Carrie. It was half bloody and gory and the other half was beauty at the prom. It terrified me from going to dances and proms.”Nevertheless, it feels as though Domingo was born to be in 2021’s Candyman. In relation to Bernard Rose’s 1992 film, the first in the series, this iteration takes place in the area where Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood. Domingo’s Burke owns a retro laundromat and is one of the last residents of the storied development. The real Black folks who once populated Cabrini-Green, which was located in the shadow of downtown’s glittering skyscrapers, are now gone; by 2011 the towering apartment complexes that once dotted the torn landscape were demolished, making way for new luxe townhouses. All that remains are haunting row houses. Burke is a mysterious figure bearing deep emotional scars, and Domingo relied on real-life experiences to play him. “I m from inner-city Philadelphia, West Philly,” he says. “I know these people. She’s attempting to find a work-life balance while dealing with budget cuts, her colleagues’ complaints about the students, the students’ complaints about her colleagues, and a best friend reeling from the loss of his wife.Peet told Rotten Tomatoes that, as an actress who is turning 50 next year, “I m really interested in the idea of my own irrelevance.”But, as far as subject matter for a series, Peet said she was interested in the fact that “everyone s talking about the humanities are dead” as well as the “intergenerational tension” where “you have these young idealists and then you have middle-aged folks like me whose idealism has tempered a little bit.”An example: Holland Taylor plays Joan Hambling, a tenured professor being passively aggressively pushed out of her job. Unlike her fellow senior academics who are male, her office has been moved to a dingy corner of the gym with no WiFi. It all snuck up on her with this realization while a younger character — a colleague, who is 30 — is well aware of that.”The crossroads that the school’s English department finds itself in is particularly laid out in the relationship dynamic between Nana Mensah’s professor Yaz McKay and Bob Balaban’s professor Elliot Rentz. She’s a rising star — not just in the department, but in the profession as a whole — who teaches packed classes with titles like Sex and the Novel and encourages Hamilton-like interpretations of Moby Dick. His lectures echo through his empty auditorium to the few nearly comatose students who bother to show up for class. A beloved professor at the university going through his own emotional turmoil, he makes the mistake of speaking off the cuff during a lecture and punctuating his rant with a Sieg Heil — definitely not the best move to do in a room full of kids with smartphones.“I don t want to give my interpretation, because I think that moment is up to a lot of interpretation in terms of what was running through his brain at that point in time,” Duplass said of the Nazi salute scene. “But I definitely think a certain dose of white male privilege is also involved.”What the story of The Chair is not meant to be is a conversation on tokenism, Oh said. Ji-Yoon got the job based on her own merits and worked hard to achieve all she has done in her career.“I don t think that that s what we re doing,” Oh said. “I think, if anything, we re examining the struggles to actually make change. And that is extremely relevant. Not bad for a comic-book flick from the man who gave us three Hangovers. If you re looking for more movies like Joker, the obvious place to start would be its direct influences: The Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese psychotic joints, Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. Throw in 90s Cape Fear for a full triumvirate.As you re undoubtedly aware, Joker was not universally beloved by critics as far as Joaquin Phoenix vigilantism flicks go (though those who loved it, loved it). For that, turn to Lynne Ramsay s Certified Fresh You Were Never Really Here, where Phoenix plays a fearless hired gun who tracks down missing girls at any cost. And if you like your lawless justice even grubbier, go with the Charles Bronson action classic Death Wish, or the churning slow burn of Sam Peckinpah s Straw Dogs.Beyond Scorsese, Joker director Todd Phillips has cited post-Vietnam War 70s cinema in general as an influence, and that decade had no shortage of man-against-the-system stories. Look upon One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, Dog Day Afternoon, and Network for proof.Network also serves (and so does Dog Day honestly) as an indictment of media, a major and pervasive presence in Joker. Nightcrawler, Natural Born Killers, and Christine (not the one about the scary car) are the ones to watch if that s where your interest in Joker lies.Or if you re just interested in seeing psychotic breakdowns, or breakdowns of psychosis, the medium of movies have long been a playground for the disturbed. American Psycho, Entertainment, and One Hour Photo go for the jugular, while The Vanishing, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and Man Bites Dog truly try to get under your skin with their clinical explorations of madness.Of course, Joker is still a story torn from the pages of DC Comics and in that vein we recommend checking out Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. It s got Mark Hamill reprising his signature villain role, animated at his most intensely violent. (Ah, if only The Killing Joke adaptation were good!)And as for our suggestion of UHF, Weird Al Yankovic s foray into film spoofery Imagine a world where Arthur Fleck actually achieved success in his professional ambitions. What would that look like? We think it d be a little zany, a little weird, a little something like what the clown prince of music offers in his 1989 cult classic.
While network superheroes may be on hiatus for another week, the world of comic book television never really stops. Thanks to cable channels and streaming services, shows outside of The CW paradigm debut and return regularly throughout the year.In 2019, superhero TV will offer tantalizing new concepts and great returning shows. With that in mind, here are 16 comic book–inspired shows we cannot wait to see.Marvel's The Punisher: Season 2 (2019) 61% | NetflixWhy We Can’t Wait: In season 2, Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) becomes embroiled in the attempted murder of a young girl (Giorgia Whigham). As the mystery surrounding her near-death unfolds, Billy Russo (Ben Barnes) returns to settle the score leftover from the duo s last encounter. While the first season may have had pacing issues (it felt just a little too long), Bernthal’s take on Frank Castle is outstanding and seeing him in action is always worth the investment of time. Also, we can’t wait to see Castle vs. Russo Part 2 now that Billy has embraced the spooky Jigsaw persona. And, as seen in the just-released trailer, his mask may hide scars less severe than his comic book counterpart s, but it also reveals the person hiding behind Billy’s formerly flawless physiognomy.Returning: Friday, Jan. 18Deadly Class: Season 1 (2019) 64% | SyfyWhy We Can’t Wait: Based on the comic book by Rick Remender and Wes Craig, Deadly Class is set at an assassin academy filled with the children of mobsters and murderers. Marcus Lopez (Benjamin Wadsworth), a kid from the streets with a lot of issues to address, finds himself accepted to the school and faces all the trials of adolescence and ninja school at the same time. Socially awkward but morally centered, Marcus must maintain his moral code while surviving a ruthless curriculum, vicious social cliques, and his own adolescent uncertainties. Set in the 1980s, the series also features some of that decade s reckless abandon and plenty of its post-punk soundtrack. If the first episode Syfy put on YouTube last month is any indication, this will be a show to keep an eye on.Debuts: Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 10 p.m.The Umbrella Academy: Season 1 (2019) 76% | NetflixWhy We Can’t Wait: Ellen Page headlines the Netflix adaptation of Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba’s comic series as Vanya Hargreeves, the one member of her family without superpowers. Black Sails’ Tom Hopper and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ Robert Sheehan also star as members of the Hargreeves family — one with the body of a Martian Gorilla and one with the ability to speak to the dead, respectively. The Hargreeves reunite after the death of their adoptive father, uncovering a mystery and coping with the abuse they suffered at his hands while he tried to make them a superteam. The show has the potential to be very different from other superhero programs with the comic’s cool aesthetic and use of superpowers as a mechanism to cope with trauma.Debuts: Friday, Feb. 15Doom Patrol: Season 1 (2019) 96% | DC UniverseWhy We Can’t Wait: One of the very best episodes of Titans premiere season introduced the live-action TV versions of DC Universe’s weirdest heroes. The Doom Patrol lives somewhere between teenagers, Frankenstein s monster, and the X-Men — though the Doom Patrol debuted a few months before Marvel s Merry Mutants — and the members of the group attempt to manage their unusual forms while saving the world. If the bizarro premise wasn’t enough, the cast is amazing with Timothy Dalton, Brendon Fraser, and Matt Bomer lending themselves to characters like the morally dubious Dr. Niles Calder, the beloved Robotman, and bandaged Negative Man. Rounding out the ensemble is April Bowlby as the stretchy Rita Farr,  Diane Guerrero as Crazy Jane, and Jovian Wade as Cyborg, a character usually associated with the Titans. They will face off against Mr. Nobody (Alan Tudyk) a one-off Silver Age villain given an extensive and memorable re-imagining from Happy! co-creator Grant Morrison.Debuts: Friday, Feb. 15Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Part 2 (2019) 82% | NetflixWhy We Can’t Wait: Part 1 of Netflix s Riverdale pseudo–spin-off proved to be an interesting show at odds with itself. Part Netflix supernatural series and part CW teen drama, the series anchored itself with star Kiernan Shipka walking the border between both realities and, ultimately, using the character’s confidence in navigating them as her part of her undoing. Part 2 will see Sabrina embracing her witchy nature while still defying the social norms within the Church of Night. Meanwhile, status quos will change and one character will learn a new, important truth.Returning: Friday, April 5Happy!: Season 2 (2019) 88% | SyfyWhy We Can’t Wait: Few shows are as relentless, mean, and as paradoxically full of joy as Happy! Christopher Meloni proved he is one of our greatest living actors by diving headfirst into a character as despicable as Nick Sax. But the most exciting aspect of the second season will be its new story. The original comic book, written by executive producer Grant Morrison, was a four-issue miniseries, meaning Nick and Happy (Patton Oswalt) are headed to uncharted lands as the series shifts from the winter holidays to an Easter focus. Does that mean Nick will end up punching an Easter Bunny in Times Square and relieving himself upon his defeated foe? We wouldn’t put it past the series, which already made rubber raves and child-snatching Santas a part of Christmas cheer.Returning: Spring 2019Cloak and Dagger 87%: Season 2 (2019) | Freeform(Photo by Freeform/Alfonso Bresciani)Why We Can’t Wait: Stars Olivia Holt and Aubrey Joseph proved to be able leads as they navigated a new world of superpowers and corporate conspiracies in Freeform s teen-focused Marvel series. The first season wisely switched the comic book dynamic with Tandy (Holt) coming from a broken home and Tyrone (Joseph) enjoying a privileged private school education. It allowed the show to make interesting socioeconomic points while still delivering a kick-ass superhero experience. The second season will once again flip the characters’ situations as Tyrone learns how to cope with his sudden homelessness. Presumably, the pair will also grow closer even as ally Brigid O Reilly (Emma Lahana) offers them a new form of mayhem.Returning: Summer 2019Swamp Thing: Season 1 (2019) 92% | DC Universe(Photo by DC Universe)Why We Can’t Wait: Based on Alan Moore’s seminal run on the 1980s Swamp Thing comic book series, the latest attempt to bring the character to television stars Gotham’s Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane, a CDC researcher who returns to her hometown to investigate a swamp-born virus. She eventually encounters the Swamp Thing (Derek Mears), who may or may not be a reborn Alec Holland (Andy Bean). Then again, it may just be a plant who thinks he’s Alec Holland. Considering Will Patton is playing Avery Sunderland and Kevin Durand is playing Jason Woodrue, the latter seems likely, as both characters appeared in the Moore-written issue in which Swamp Thing learned the shocking truth about itself. If that is the case, then the series will be leaning heavily into its horror and gothic-romance roots, which is a nice change of pace from the two feature films and the inconsistent USA series from the 1990s. Also, Ian Ziering has been cast as the fairly obscure DC Comics character Blue Devil, which is just too weird and awesome to ignore.Debuts: Summer 2019Marvel's Jessica Jones: Season 3 (2019) 72% | Netflix(Photo by David Giesbrecht/Netflix)Why We Can’t Wait: With showrunner Melissa Rosenberg leaving the program after the third season debuts and the current cancellation epidemic befalling the Marvel shows on Netflix, it is entirely possible the third season of Jessica Jones will attempt to pull off something few superhero shows have done before: a definitive ending. Where the superhero model inherited from comics is a literally never-ending, exhausting battle, Jessica Jones may be in a position to confront that idea head-on. Granted, Jessica (Krysten Ritter) has never been a traditional superhero and the show already revolves around emotional trauma, but that also makes it uniquely suited to address a character’s end-state. And that could mean Jessica will finally get to heal. Meanwhile, Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor) will continue her slide into the superpowers-as-drugs metaphor, but perhaps there is also an opportunity to see both her and Jessica find a way through their issues to something more stable. Dazed and Confused put Richard Linklater and Austin on the map. John Sayles made his most thrilling movie there, the neo-Western Lone Star. And emerging from Houston with an offbeat crime-caper was Wes Anderson. Bottle Rocket fizzled at the box office, but it was a crucial calling card for the director and his band of collaborators, like actors Owen and Luke Wilson, and cinematographer Robert Yeoman. And when Martin Scorsese compares your debut to the likes of McCarey and Renoir, you re probably gonna get another chance in the industry. Bill Murray signing up for Anderson s second feature, Rushmore, elevated the movie s stature and release, and introduced Bill s re-invention as the Melancholy Murray.Bottle Rocket and Rushmore s growing reputations, and Anderson s own as a modern auteur, generated significant hype for his third film, The Royal Tenenbaums. With its star-studded ensemble cast, the multigenerational comedy-epic would be Anderson s highest box office earner until Grand Budapest Hotel, and got him into the Academy s good graces with a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination. Tenenbaums also represents the point Anderson took total command of his craft: Whereas his quirky sensibilities and measured shot compositions enhanced the real-world settings of his first two films, from Tenebaums on that quirk would represent all points of reality in his work. Watching an Anderson movie means escaping into a medley of ornate sets, clean lines and angles, impeccable blocking, precisely-picked pop music, and curious dialogue and action.That was certainly the case for next feature The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, where Anderson was gifted million and carte blanche to shoot whatever he wanted. Which, of course, meant building your own ship, shooting on choppy sea waters and at the famed Cinecittà Studios in Rome, and hiring Henry Selick to animate seahorses. Life Aquatic bombed at the box office and critics were iffy on the slack pacing, but audiences have since boosted up Steve as fashion icon and man of action whilst mired in Millennial malaise.The Darjeeling Limited is mostly a minor entry, bordering on self-parody as his style continued to wallop character and story. When it was announced Anderson s next project would be a stop-motion animated movie based on a Roald Dahl story, it was almost too perfectly, eye-rollingly twee. But like knocking out the cedar stick at Whackbat, Fantastic Mr. Fox was a jubilant, all-ages success. Anderson stayed young at heart with Moonrise Kingdom, an intimate adventure of first love and organized scouting, which drew the best reviews of his career and his first significant grosser in a decade.That would all be topped with his arguable masterpiece, The Grand Budapest Hotel, a dizzying trip through alternate history, meta-fiction, shootouts, and Renaissance paintings, and one very pretty building. It earned Anderson another Best Screenplay Oscar nomination, his first nomination for Best Director, and the film won for Original Score, Editing, Production, and Costume. (Photo by Stefania D'Alessandro/WireImage)After James Gunn was fired from directing Marvel’s third Guardians of the Galaxy film, fans wondered whether Taika Waititi – who made Marvel’s critically acclaimed Thor: Ragnarock, which contained much more humor than previous films starring the God of Thunder – could and would take over the franchise.He told reporters in Los Angeles on Monday that he is definitely not directing Guardians of the Galaxy 3.“For me, those are James s films,” he told Rotten Tomatoes and a small group of reporters after a panel for FX’s What We Do in the Shadows adaptation at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. “Going into something like that, which has got his stamp all over it, would feel like going into someone s house and going, ‘Hey, I m your new dad, and this is how we make peanut butter sandwiches now.’ It just feels kind of awkward. I just wouldn t know how to follow up those two films because those are his babies.”Waititi is still in conversation with Marvel about future films, however.“I’m not doing that movie, but I’m still hanging out with those guys and talking about new stuff,” he confirmed. “I don t know what it might be yet, but, yeah, I want to do another movie with them for sure. Children – his own – were also a big part of Prisoners and The Red Road writer Guzikowski’s inspiration for the series.“I have three young sons, and (I was) just thinking about them moving out into this world and their relationship with technology and my own relationship with technology, and just at what point will these things start to overlap, and I won t be able to tell the difference anymore? Where it really becomes part of me and I become a part of it,” Guzikowski said. “A lot of it, I think, came from just my lifelong obsession with science fiction, but I think it was really this idea about raising children in this world of technology. And also, if we were to start a new world somewhere, with all the knowledge of what went wrong on Earth, what would we choose to do? What would we take with us and what would we try and leave behind? “It was one specific panel in Marvel Spotlight #13 where Daimon is reading his mother s journal, and he s in his full-on cape and bare chest with the pentagram and everything,” he recalled. “And he s crying because he s reading the story of his mother and how the mother met the father and sort of who the father really is … and that s a lot of emotion. That s a lot of baggage.”Zbyszewski, growing up in the Catholic tradition while reading the early Helstrom appearances, became enamored with the baggage.“This was a very emotional story about a couple of kids who had the worst dad ever,” he said. Plus, the thrill of reading about the son of Satan offered his comic book diet a sense of the taboo and danger. “You go, ‘Ooh, that s dark.’ And then when you pick it up and you re a little bit older, you re like, ‘Oh, OK. I kind of see this [emotional tale].’”The sense of cool and the family underpinnings made Helstrom a must-make concept.2. Helstrom Is An Unlikely Family Drama(Photo by Katie Yu/Hulu)Though the series begins with Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana (Satana renamed for television) having spent years apart and estranged, the show leans into the notion of family very quickly thanks to the unique dynamic between Ana (Sydney Lemmon) and Chris Yen (Alain Uy).“[My] chosen family is Chris Yen,  Lemmon said during our time in Vancouver. We met in the foster care system and just fused and became best friends. [He] became almost more of a brother to me than Daimon and then down the road, business partners.”Chris and Ana are introduced with a peek at their lavish life, including San Francisco apartments and a thriving antiquities dealership. To Uy, that clean, ordered world is the best place for Chris. The character is “a very in-control type of person and likes things in a specific way. Some ways that is the yin into Ana s yang,” Uy explained.That yang includes a handful of supernatural abilities Chris may or may not be aware of — “I think he s got some knowledge,” Uy teased.“The night you meet her, she is hosting a huge auction and you encounter a powerful business lady,” Lemmon said. “Then everything goes sideways, and she gets pulled away from everything and has to deal with her past, which is something that she s been running from.”(Photo by Katie Yu/Hulu)Which leads us back to Daimon.“[We’re] ripped apart at a young age,” Lemmon explained. “So we ve led completely separate lives and have totally different bags of trauma, and when we come together, it s really, really hard to find the common ground.”Perhaps the siblings can find common ground with their mother, Victoria, who is still alive in this version of the story, but not entirely herself. Marvel — whose name did not get her the job, by the way — tackles a difficult mix of mental illness and not being alone in her head.She called the work “actor s candy,” adding “this landscape of the Marvel universe, and the powers and the things that they re wrestling with, they re so huge. But as theater artists, we do the Greek [plays], and we do Shakespeare, and we are used to taking these massive cosmic issues and domesticating them. And that s something that I think we get to do very interestingly in this Marvel Universe.”From what we ve seen of the show, these cosmic issues will lead Daimon and Ana back to the pain caused by their home life with Victoria and their father.3. The Show Can Deviate From the Comics(Photo by Bettina Strauss/Hulu)Like Victoria’s continuing presence in the mental ward of a Portland area hospital, Helstrom takes certain liberties with the comics. Ana, for instance, is quite different from her curvaceous and horn-headed comic book counterpart – Lemmon recalled thinking Oh! OK, um, so we re going to be using wigs, prosthetic body parts apparently when she first saw art of Satana – and a couple of the characters more tied to Ghost Rider comics add a generational aspect to the show.In the series, both Caretaker (Robert Wisdom) and Dr. Louise Hastings (June Carryl) have been involved with the Helstrom kids for a long time. Dr. Hastings essentially raised Daimon while Caretaker looked after Ana from afar. Their roles here are quite a departure from Marvel lore — Hastings is a fairly obscure name from an early ’90s comic book series — but Zbyszewski viewed them as different ways Marvel characters can be used in a television adaptation. Caretaker, who is part of a secret society holding the line against evil in the comics, featured a natural element in the original storytelling” the producer knew could fit into his plan for Helstrom.For his part, Wisdom views the character as a cross between “Nick Fury and Indiana Jones” and thinks Marvel fans familiar with the character will be surprised by how much he cares for Ana.“They’re going to be taken with the relationship,” he said. “She’s like a bolt of lightning, and I’m trying to wrestle with [that].”Wisdom referred to it as a “dance” which may, in the end, lead to a surprising change in Caretaker himself, but also teased, “Who knows what Caretaker’s real motivation is?”(Photo by Katie Yu/Hulu)Dr. Hastings “fit in a little bit differently” according to Zbyszewski.“Sometimes the backstories in the comics are not deep enough or rich enough to mine to give your characters arcs,” he explained.As a result, Dr. Hastings benefited from a major expansion, although elaborating might constitute a spoiler. We can say she is the head of the hospital’s psychology department and one of the few people Daimon trusts.“There s a practicality to Louise that I think gets a workout, Carryl said back in February. When something kind of goes off the rails and into another realm, there s a Huh. OK. I m going to have to put that in the hopper, and it s going to pop for a [moment], and we ll deal with it later.”As a result, the character lends the show an added sense of reality. When we asked Carryl about that aspect of Dr. Hastings more recently, she said the supernatural is “not old hat yet” to the character despite raising a child who can summon hellfire.4. Daimon Helstrom Knows His Abilities

Pixar’s second movie came out in theaters way back in November of 1998, when it premiered on November 14 before opening in limited release on the 20th and expanding everywhere on November 25. Though a success at the time, A Bug’s Life is one of the more forgotten Pixar movies these days. Sure, it doesn’t get flack the way the much-maligned Cars franchise does, but it rarely places highly on any of those “Every Pixar Movie, Ranked” lists that populate the web. Pixar itself appears to have forgotten A Bug’s Life as well, in a way: It’s the only one of the studio’s first six films that hasn’t gotten a sequel (the seventh, if you count Toy Story 2). Not everything needs a sequel, but it’s perhaps telling that the studio hasn’t returned to the story of Flik and his friends.That’s a shame in a lot of ways. Though A Bug’s Life doesn’t reach the soaring visual and emotional heights of later films like Wall-E, Inside Out, and Coco, it’s still a remarkable success — just on smaller terms, as is fitting for a movie about bugs.The Antz Rivalry(Photo by Walt Disney Studios, DreamWorks)To fully appreciate A Bug’s Life, one must travel back to 1998, when moviegoers who wanted to see a computer-animated movie about an ant who was an individualist with big, unappreciated ideas had two choices as the box office. There was A Bug’s Life, and there was DreamWorks’ Antz, a bizarre parable about Marxism starring Woody Allen. That the movies were so similar was not a coincidence, at least not according to Pixar’s brass at the time, who claimed that DreamWorks’ Jeffrey Katzenberg, a former Disney chairman, stole the idea and rushed the movie to theaters before A Bug’s Life. Both were pretty well-received Certified Fresh at 94%, Antz actually ranks a little higher on the Tomatometer than A Bug’s Life s also Certified Fresh 92%, even if the audience score for the latter easily tops the former s  and we can look back at the two movies now with bemusement. Still, consider how wild and telling it is that A Bug’s Life was a big enough deal from the start that it prompted some alleged corporate espionage. That’s the sign of an important movie, if there ever was one.The Cast Is Full of Unexpected Greats(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)A Bug’s Life has a secretly stacked cast, full of actors who were definitely not cast because they were “popular with the youths,” but because they were talented. Phyllis Diller, whose iconic cackle was probably familiar to anybody who grew up with the pioneering female comedian in the ‘60s, makes a real character out of the Queen. Mel Brooks mainstay Madeline Kahn, who would die too soon a little more than a year after the film’s premiere, plays Gypsy, while Roddy McDowall, a character actor perhaps best known for his role as Caesar in Planet of the Apes, played a thespian ant. These are all great actors, but perhaps not the most obvious choices for an up-and-coming animation studio in the ‘90s. That they were cast in the movie is another early hint of Pixar’s willingness to do the unexpected.Other members of the cast were perhaps a little less out of left field, but actors like Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Princess Atta), Denis Leary (Francis), David Hyde Piece (Slim), and Brad Garrett (Dim), and Richard Kind (Molt) are all inspired casting choices, not to mention Dave Foley in the lead as Flik. It’s nearly impossible to talk about Kevin Spacey with any sort of reverence these days, and for good reason, but as Hopper, he voices one of the more chilling villains that Disney — let alone Pixar — has ever dreamed up.Its Plot was Epic, Yet Focused(Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)A Bug’s Life is, essentially, a kid-friendly rendition of Akira Kurosawa s Seven Samurai. The grasshoppers, led by Hopper, have been oppressing the ants for too long, and when their greed and cruelty reaches new levels, the ants must fight back. Sure, the fight is less of a Lord of the Rings-style clash between giant armies and more of a Trojan Horse gambit in the form of a wooden bird, but A Bug’s Life has a pretty epic plot nonetheless. And yet, the storytelling economy is on point. In a filmmaker’s roundtable video that Disney/Pixar produced, the directors and producers recall how the script went through multiple iterations as they figured out what had to work in order to make the story flow.The first big breakthrough came when they recast the lazy grasshopper from the Aesop’s Fable as a greedy tyrant. From there, it was all about making sure that every character had a personal stake in the fighting. Early drafts had a main character who was not from the colony, or circus performers who were initially scammers before deciding to switch sides, but those ideas wouldn’t have worked. By directly tying the conflict to each character in an emotionally resonant way, A Bug’s Life managed to have a large-scale war story with a highly focused s
