The organization named Pose the year’s Outstanding Drama Series, and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story as Outstanding TV Movie or Limited Series. The “Trans Rights Under Attack” episode of Full Frontal With Samantha Bee won Outstanding Variety or Talk Show Episode, and Don Lemon of CNN won for Outstanding TV Journalism Segment while CBS Sunday Morning won for Outstanding TV Journalism—Newsmagazine for a segment on conversion therapy. Netflix’s Elite and Univision’s Mi marido tiene más familia tied for Outstanding Scripted Television Series (Spanish-Language). Bravo’s Andy Cohen won the Vito Russo Award (honoring an openly LGBTQ media professional working for LGBTQ acceptance). Vida and Queer Eye were previously honored at a ceremony in Los Angeles.Stranger Things Lawsuit Dropped(Photo by Netflix)A plagiarism lawsuit involving Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer was dropped just days before it was set to go to trial. Charles Kessler had sued the Duffers and Netflix, alleging they’d stolen an idea for a TV show he’d pitched them at a cocktail party in 2014, but withdrew his suit on May 5. The trial was scheduled to begin May 7.“After hearing the deposition testimony this week of the legal expert I hired, it is now apparent to me that, whatever I may have believed in the past, my work had nothing to do with the creation of Stranger Things,” Kessler said in a statement.A Spine-Tingling Bah Humbug, with Guy Pearce and Andy Serkis(Photo by Robert Viglasky/FX)Guy Pearce is set to headline an upcoming three-part adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol as Ebenezer Scrooge. The joint production between FX and BBC One will also star Andy Serkis as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Stephen Graham as Jacob Marley, Charlotte Riley as Lottie, Joe Alwyn as Bob Cratchit, Vinette Robinson as Mary Cratchit, Rutger Hauer as the Ghost of Christmas Future, Kayvan Novak as Ali Baba, and Lenny Rush as Tim Cratchit. Per the official announcement, this will be a “unique and original” take on the classic and a “haunting, hallucinatory, spine-tingling immersion into Scrooge’s dark night of the soul. Steven Knight (Taboo, Peaky Blinders) will write and Nick Murphy (The Awakening) will direct, and the series will premiere in December on FX.CBS Has Censored This Content(Photo by Patrick Harbron/CBS)Last week’s episode of CBS All Access’ The Good Fight touched on censorship — so when, in the place where the show’s weekly animated musical segment would go (yes, that is a thing, and yes, it completely works in context), a black screen reading “CBS HAS CENSORED THIS CONTACT” was inserted instead, many viewers thought it was a joke relating to the overall theme of the episode. It wasn’t. According to The New Yorker, CBS really did censor the short, which was called “Banned In China” and dealt with “the way that media companies censor content.” The Good Fight showrunners threatened to quit in protest, but inserted the censorship chyron instead as a compromise.More Casting News(Photo by Daniel Power/The CW)Riverdale is losing a main cast member, but that’s actually a good thing. Ashleigh Murray, a.k.a. singer/songwriter Josie McCoy, is leaving the CW series to be a series regular on another CW series: the Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene. The new series follows the titular character (an aspiring fashion designer played by Pretty Little Liars’ Lucy Hale) and her new friend Josie (Murray, as her Riverdale character), who arrives in New York City to pursue a music career.Hilary Swank will executive produce and star in Netflix’s new space drama Away, about an astronaut who leads an international space exhibition on a treacherous mission. Former E.R. star Anthony Edwards will star alongside Kiefer Sutherland in the third season of Netflix’s resurrected Designated Survivor. Amandla Stenberg will costar alongside Andre Holland in Damien Chazelle’s Netflix series The Eddy. She’ll play Julie, the teenage daughter of Holland’s character “who suddenly shows up in Paris and forces him to face his past,” per Netflix. Also on Netflix, Kristin Scott Thomas will play Mrs. Danvers in the streaming service’s upcoming adaptation of Rebecca, joining Lily James and Armie Hammer in the project.Paget Brewster is set to headline a new animated Adult Swim series: She’ll play the titular character in Birdgirl, a Harvey Birdman spinoff that will feature Brewster’s character juggling work responsibilities as a CEO by day and superhero by night (and sometimes afternoon). The new season of anthology series Manhunt, which is moving from Discovery Channel to Spectrum, will chronicle the hunt for the man who bombed the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Jack Huston is set to play the criminal mastermind who planned the deadly bombing, Eric Rudolph, while Cameron Britton will play Richard Jewell, who discovered the bomb and saved hundreds of people — and was falsely charged with planting the bomb. Season 2 is called Manhunt: Lone Wolf, while season 1 was titled Manhunt: Unabomber, and followed the hunt to find Ted Kaczynski. She’s Alive, Dammit!, And Interactive(Photo by Eric Liebowitz / Netflix)Season 4 of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt just wasn’t enough for Netflix. Tina Fey announced that the series, which ended in late 2018 after four seasons, will get its very own interactive special (a la Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch) set to debut in 2020.“Fans will be able to make choices on behalf of our characters, taking different story paths with, of course, different jokes,” the creator said in a statement. “I think it’s a great fit for our show and will be a great way to officially complete the series.”Development Update(Photo by HBO)ABC Studios has signed 2 Dope Queens star Phoebe Robinson to a multi-year deal in which the comedian and podcast host will write and star in projects for the studio. We’ve wanted to be in business with Phoebe since the very first time we heard the 2 Dope Queens podcast. Her humor, unique point of view and her incredibly fresh, authentic talent are huge assets for us; we couldn’t be more thrilled that she’s joining our studio,” studio president Patrick Moran said in a statement.Black-ish creator Kenya Barris has announced his first project under his new Netflix deal: Black Excellence, a comedy in which Barris will star alongside Rashida Jones. According to its official description, the series will “pull the curtain back and reboot the ‘family sitcom’ in a way we’ve never seen before.”Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu has signed a four-year deal to develop new projects with 20th Century Fox Television, the TV studio recently acquired by Disney after the Fox merger. According to Deadline, Chu will develop, executive produce, and possibly direct new projects for the studio. The deal is reportedly worth somewhere in the “mid-seven figures.”Move over, Marvel: The company behind Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, Dark Horse Entertainment, has signed a new deal that gives the streaming service first crack at adapting the company’s comics and other properties.Comedy Central is starting its own studio. Comedy Central Productions will produce original content with some of the network’s top talent, including Broad City veterans Paul W. Downs and Lucia Aniello; Beetlejuice musical writer Anthony King; Klepper and Daily Show executive producer Stuart Miller; and the production company behind Inside Amy Schumer and I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson, Irony Point.Like this? Harris appeared as Captain Francis Crozier in The Terror opposite Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones) as Sir John Franklin and Tobias Menzies (Outlander) as James Fitzjames. An esteemed sailor with personal demons, Crozier faces a largely invisible  force of — if not evil exactly — unrelenting and destructive nature. Harris lead performance throughout, on- and apparently off-screen as well, was impressive, contributing to the season s stellar Certified Fresh 95% Tomatometer score and a Golden Tomato for best horror series in 2018. Jared was very often trying to give some of his lines away to other characters to make sure that they would stay in focus for the audience, it was amazing, showrunner  David Kajganich told Rotten Tomatoes in May last year. He’s the height of generosity. I mean, we couldn’t have asked for a better collaborator than Jared, in every way.Chernobyl is on its way to Certified Fresh status, with a 100% score on nine reviews ahead of its release. The five-part miniseries also stars Breaking the Waves costars Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson, who echoed Kajganich s admiration — also noting that Harris is a giggle. “You can tell from his work that he has complete integrity and cares very deeply about the things that really matter, Watson told Rotten Tomatoes. Actually getting to work with him confirmed that 100 percent — and to my great joy — he doesn’t care about the stuff that doesn’t matter. Very similar to Stellan, but I knew that already. Jared is effortlessly truthful and works without ego. He can get very animated if he feels that we’re not getting to the bottom of the subject in hand — holding everyone around him to a very high standard.”The historical drama also boasts an unlikely creative team: director Johan Renck (Vikings) is well known for his work in music videos, including David Bowie s Blackstar and Beyoncé s Me, Myself and I, while writer and creator Craig Mazin s credits — including Scary Movie 3, The Hangover Part II,  Identity Thief, and The Huntsman: Winter s War — though often profitable, don t immediately suggest prestige TV. (Photo by HBO)A go-to British character actor for the moody everyman, Harris is anything but in real life; for one, he is the son of Welsh actress and socialite Elizabeth Rees-Williams and renowned Irish actor Richard Harris — famous to a younger generation as the Harry Potter film franchise s beloved first Dumbledore (the one fans had to say goodbye to when the actor passed away in 2002). To a more seasoned audience, the elder Harris is best known as Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator and for Oscar-nominated roles in This Sporting Life and The Field. In addition to his Chernobyl and The Terror roles, Jared Harris has distinguished himself as King George VI in Netflix s award-winning period drama The Crown, as hard-living Outer Planets Alliance leader Anderson Dawes in sci-fi series The Expanse, rogue scientist David Robert Jones in Fringe, and as Mad Men s tragic ad-agency partner Lane Pryce. And that s just TV. He s also appeared on film as Professor James Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Andy Warhol in I Shot Andy Warhol, and Ulysses S. Grant in Steven Spielberg s Lincoln. We spoke to the actor before Chernobyl hit, and he told us about the joys of performing with Skarsgård and Watson, the status of Anderson Dawes in The Expanse, and, as a big fan of another HBO hit series, indulged us with some Game of Thrones talk.(Photo by Roy Rochlin/Getty Images for Tribeca Film Festival)Debbie Day for Rotten Tomatoes: The first episode, to me, plays like a horror show. And after seeing you in The Terror, I wondered what draws you to that kind of bleak material.Harris: I want to say yes to things that are really well written. Stories that grip me, and that excite me, and ones that where I want to flip the page and see what happens next. And definitely felt that way about this. For someone like me who lived through that period of time, I was surprised at how interested I was in seeing the story portrayed. You mentioned, in your interview with Seth Meyers, that you remember the time well.Harris: I do remember it well. I was living in London at the time, and I remember all the stuff on the news about it. And like I said, tracking the cloud, and I also remember that once the cloud had passed over, and sort of passed over the Atlantic, people stopped paying attention to it, and I was very surprised to find out from reading this that it was spewing toxic waste up into the atmosphere for another three months. You know, they didn t say that at the time. And again, it was the things that you d find out that you didn t know, and the reason why you turned the page and you keep reading. The sacrifices that people made, the heroism of unnamed people that didn t expect to be lionized by history in any way. And the suppression of the truth, that bureaucratic bungling, the irony of it being a safety test that stops the whole thing. It was incredibly well written and fascinating. This is an interesting time to do a series about out-of-control egos.Harris: Absolutely. There are lots of immediate parallels, aren t there, too, to what s happening. We re dealing with crises that people are ignoring, the scientific facts, experts are not being listened to, opinions are taking precedent over scientific inquiry. You know? And they have very little regard for the health and well-being of their people.(Photo by HBO)That s something that definitely resonated with me about the series.Harris: I ll tell you what I took from it: The Soviet state was the one where the suppression of the truth was taken over facts. The state lied, and no one expected to be able to hear the truth from the state, and the powers that be. And the population had become cynical about an expectation of being able to hear the truth or hold power to account. But that s when things get dangerous: when you no longer can — or expect to be able to — hold the powers, the governing bodies to a standard of truth. And that s when they can get away with it. So you ve got to be vigilant, you can t give up. You can hold their feet to the fire. One of your character s quotes is, “Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth.” That was very meaningful to me.Harris: That was Craig, and when you pitch a show about a historical event, I think one of the questions you get asked is, Why now? How is it relevant to now? And you have to have an answer for that before the commissioners will say, OK, we ll give you however many millions to go ahead and make it. And I think that was in the DNA of what Craig was interested in: truth. And one of the things that he said that was interesting, which, again, he said A line from it, is he said, You can lie all you want, but the truth doesn t really care. And the truth will do what it s going to do. And I suppose in that sense, as it relates to what s happening now, we can argue over climate change all we like, but at the end of the day, it s going to do what it s going to do.You see that happening around the world, and I think that the older generation is really failing the task. There was an obsession with the generation above us, with the Golden Generation; they were fighting for everybody s rights in World War II, and for freedom and liberty, and — we are not covering ourselves with glory, our generation. It s hard to get people to care about something beyond their front doorstep.Harris: Until it comes right up to their front doorstep, then floods their living room That s what Craig s saying: If that s what s going to happen, it will do it anyway, whether you believe in it or not. If you believe the science or not, you can start paddling around in your living room in a kayak.(Photo by Aidan Monaghan/AMC)You ve had a long career, and when I saw your name on The Terror, I thought, Well, Jared Harris is in it, it must be good.Harris: I like that association. And, yeah, all of the television that I ve seen you in, like from Fringe, and Mad Men, and The Expanse, it s all been such excellent work. What is it about television?Harris: Why TV, why is that happening? I think that s got less to do with me, and it s got more to do with the fact that the studios have given up on entertaining adults. And they are trying to get a certain age bracket to come in, and it s sort of 12-24 year old men, and they give you giant tentpole action/superhero films, which I really enjoy, I go and see, as well. But they ve given up on any other entertaining, any other kind of mindset. And for a while, there was a vacuum, and then television has stepped into that vacuum, because there s an appetite for complicated stories, and nuanced characters, and original stories, and taking risks, and there is an appetite out there, and television and now the streaming platforms have stepped into that, and there s a supply for that demand.I think that s why it s happening. And for me, I grew up loving the movies of the ’70s, and I really thought that if you had a career in cinema, that somehow you d be working in films like that, and they don t really exist in films anymore, but they exist in television. There still will be rubbish on TV, don t get me wrong. There s still a lot of rubbish out there, and I personally, I want to be in things that I care about, and at the moment, there s enough out there that you don t have to say yes to rubbish to pay your mortgage, you can say yes to things that you care about, and stories that means something to you, and that interest me or not, but are challenging.(Photo by Marvel Comics)You do have a big, kind of blockbuster-y movie on the horizon, with Morbius, yes?Harris: Yeah, I ve got another week on that. And I mean, that s not a big commitment on my side, you know? They don t want anything to be revealed about it until it s time for them to start trying to go out there, and tickle the interest of the public. So I m doing a Spiderman spin-off movie called Morbius, but beyond that — that s it. Yeah. There s Matt Smith, which is cool. And Jared Leto. Was it confusing having two Jareds on set?Harris: It wasn t confusing — I ll say that. You also have Carnival Row coming, yes?Harris: Yes, I believe that s coming out at the end of this year, but I haven t heard anything specific. There would be a lot of effects with that — they would be spending more time on it, yes?Harris: I believe so, but … once something wraps, once your part wraps, you re in the dark until it s time for the thing to come out, and sometimes they still don t tell you anything, and we find out about it once it starts airing. So I m not sure what their plans are specifically. I think I heard somewhere that it s coming out in October, towards the end of October.(Photo by Syfy)Where did we leave Anderson Dawes in The Expanse? Did he kind of just jet off?Harris: Yeah. Anderson pinched — he stole the scientist, yeah. And that was it — that was the last we saw of him, specifically. Is there any hope that we’ll see him again?Harris: I’m not sure. I haven t heard any more from them. At one point, they had called up, and they were seeing whether or not I d be interested in — it wouldn t have been coming back for season 3, but for beyond season 3 I don t know what their plans are [now that] Amazon picked it up. I haven t heard anything from anybody.I really enjoyed that character. It was a very satisfying character for me. I spent a lot of time talking with Mark Fergus about the character, and the idea of walking a very thin line with regards to keeping the audience guessing as to what side of the fence he was on: Could you trust him? Was he an agent of good? Was he just out for himself, for his own self-aggrandizement? Or was he really there fighting for the cause. And I loved it. I loved playing with that back and forth of it. But, yeah, I don t know what their plans are.I think some of those questions still exist when he leaves the scene. I really enjoyed watching the character, because of that sort of enigmatic behavior.Harris: Yeah. From my point of view, I consider him to be “ride or die.” … He s looking out for the interest of his people. And he was prepared to do whatever he needed to do to make sure that they were protected and got what they needed, you know? But you never quite knew whether or not he was looking just to promote himself or not, the way he was using other people. I liked that ambiguity. I loved the crazy looks of the character. I remember, we were talking about the identity because they were going to put the tattoos on me, and I asked him what they were, and what they represented. And I said, Well, since I m supposed to be this sort of, the original OPA Belter, let s invent the idea that they re scars and that the original suits burned you. And that s how people end up representing their connection to the original guys. And they asked me about the accent, and they said, It s up to you to decide what you want to do, the accents you can do. It was like curry: You can be mild, medium, or spicy hot. And I said, I want the hot, the most difficult, the most extreme version of it, I want to do that one.Are you a fan of the books?Harris: I started to read them, but, again, I have so much reading to do, that — if I was coming back, would do a deep dive into them. I was really enjoying them, but … I don t read for pleasure any longer, I have so much reading to do, and when you say yes to a project, you suddenly have a stack of books, you ve got weeks of internet diving, and — I don t find reading pleasurable anymore. It s work.(Photo by HBO)When the next Song of Ice and Fire book comes out, will you read that?Harris: I haven t read those at all.Really?Harris: I haven t read any of them.Ah. That s interesting.Harris: But what I know from talking to people is that they are, they re The show s very different from the books. There s no Night King in the books … someone told me [author George R.R. Martin] doesn t feature the character. And the person who s going to bring the wall down is Euron Greyjoy.I m looking forward to the last three [episodes], although I can t believe that they ve erased the existential threat. Somehow, I feel as though there s a twist in that tale. It just seems, that seems odd, that that was continually driving the undercurrent of the entire series, and that they fought back, and now — and without it ever getting to Cersei s doorstep, either, which, if anyone deserves to be visited by the army of the undead, it s Cersei. If anyone deserves to become the undead, it s Cersei. And I think from Dany s dream earlier on in the series, we thought —Harris: When she s captured by the warlocks. Yeah, the whole roof to the throne room at King s Landing is completely burnt away.Someone said to me, Well, winter is still coming. Just because the Night King is gone, doesn t mean winter s going to stop. Harris: What does this mean, in terms of sort of what s left on the table? If her army has been decimated, they don t have enough to take out Cersei s two armies, and now the two dragons are in play, and you re going to go and melt King s Landing. But then, of course, there s going to be objections of doing that amongst her team of advisors. I could imagine somewhere along the line of that there will somehow be, and that they will bring up the not the Night King, per se, but that threat, and then since they re supposed to represent death, how can you kill death? The only other thing I did think about, was that the red god is referred to as being the red god and also he s the god of death. So then, you can look at it, and see an entire battle between the new god of death, and the old god of death. And the new god of death has wiped out the old god of death. And who knows what the red god s got plans for anybody else, now. Melisandre s god, and also, they referred to the same god by [Jaqen H ghar]; he refers to that as being the god of death and the red god. The same god.Interesting theory – a sort of religious transition.Harris: Well, it s the “Song of Ice and Fire”; one god represents winter, and the other s the fire god, and there s a battle between these two deities, being acted out between these human agencies as to who s got ultimate power over the world, I guess. We should probably stop talking about Game of Thrones. I hope you have a question about Chernobyl.(Photo by HBO)That s OK. I appreciate it. One more Chernobyl question: How do you feel about being in a prestige project like this, in which there is so much talent in the cast, everyone brought their A-game, and it s so well done?Harris: The very first words out of my manager s mouth was, HBO is doing a mini-series about Chernobyl.” So, it s HBO — ding! — ears pricked up, that means it s going to be really high quality, they take risks, it s really, it s massive support for the whole production, and they give a tremendous artistic license to the showrunners and the storytellers. So right there, you go, OK, that s amazing. And then, yeah, I got to spend most of my days with Stellan and Emily, and what a joy that is. I am tremendously fond of both of them. And they re brilliant, brilliant actors, and there s no angst about it. They can sit and chat about whatever they need to chat about, and then when it s time to do the work, they just put their heads down, and they lock right into that space and focus on it hard and deliver.I learned a lot, I mean, I learned a lot watching Stellan and Emily on this. That s the idea: You work with really good people, and you learn something every single time, if you re lucky.Thank you so much for your time today, Jared. And good luck with the series. It s going to do well — it s already got 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.Harris: Whoo! Yeah. I saw that, and speaking of your algorithm, The Terror was very, very high on Rotten Tomatoes, and The Expanse: highest audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes for any of the sci-fi fantasy shows. How about that?I m a huge fan. Harris: I got a question for you: Who do you think is going to sit on the Iron Throne at the end of the story, of the whole series?I don t think anyone s going to sit on the Iron Throne. I think it s going to be destroyed.Harris: Well, [Daenerys] said she s going to break the wheel, you re quite right. A confederation — a confederation of kingdoms.A democracy.Harris: Yeah.(Photo by HBO)Postscript: With Game of Thrones anything can happen, and most theories turn out completely wrong. With Chernobyl, at least, we already know the end of the story. The thrill of the portrayal, however, is learning how they got there.Chernobyl premieres on Monday, May 6 at 9 p.m. on HBO.

Gates and engage in more historical nonsense. Let’s hope Disney forks over another 0 million so he can finish the trilogy, whether that happens in theaters or on Disney+.4. SEAN BEAN LIVES! (Photo by (c) Touchstone courtesy Everett Collection)We’ve been programmed to accept that Sean Bean always dies in a spectacular fashion (e.g., Goldeneye ouch), and when his Ian Howe doesn’t fall prey to a Templar trap or an ancient catapult in National Treasure, it’s beautifully unexpected. While it would have been appropriate for Gates to let loose a one-liner  something like “I’ll treasure this moment” or “Prepare to meet your forefathers” as he sent Howe to an elaborate death, it doesn’t happen. In the end, Howe is simply arrested, which leaves him on the chessboard for future installments. After watching Bean die in (spoilers ahead!) Game of Thrones, Black Death, Equilibrium, Don’t Say a Word, The Island, Patriot Games, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, just to name a few, it’s nice to know one of his fictional characters is still alive. Early scenes between Ben and Ian show us that the two genuinely like each other, and Ian isn’t happy about his sudden heel turn. As the film progresses, Ian turns out to be a suitable antagonist who is always one step behind, but never far. Plus, the more you watch the the movie, the more you begin to like Howe s henchmen, namely Phil, Shaw, Powell, and Shippen, if only because they seem friendly with Ben, and they aren’t completely terrible at being henchmen.5. IT HELPED FILL THE INDIANA JONES VOID(Photo by (c) Touchstone courtesy Everett Collection)Smack dab in between The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and four years before Indiana Jones helped coin the term “nuking the fridge” in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, National Treasure filled a much needed void. The constant travel, puzzle solving, justified thievery, and ancient treasures satiated our thirst for globetrotting adventure; from grounded ships in the Arctic to the reflecting pool in Washington D.C., the frantic pace and constant clues made the most of a proven crowd-pleasing formula.Throw in the fact that Benjamin Franklin Gates, Patrick Gates, and John Adams Gates (Christopher Plummer) are named after American forefathers, and you have a movie that embraces history and isn’t subtle about it. Plus, the 0 million budget, the use of actual landmark locations, and the wonderful production design by Norris Spencer ensured the film would age surprisingly well over time. These types of films don’t really exist anymore, and that’s one of the reasons why we still love it now. Also, we think Indy himself would approve of the way Gates and his crew made sure the treasure was shared with the world, because “it belongs in a museum!”National Treasure was released on November 19, 2004.

Golden Globes 2020 Red Carpet Arrivals See all the stars, celebrities, and artists who showed up on one of the biggest nights in Hollywood! by RT Staff | January 5, 2020 | Comments
The early months of 2020 saw unprecedented changes in the movie industry as Hollywood attempted figure out how best to respond a global crisis. Part of that response was to bring movies to the home market earlier than usual, with at least one film, Trolls World Tour, opting to release on home entertainment media on the same day as its scheduled theatrical debut. For others, it has meant postponing opening weekends, even if no new date has been announced (you can find those films in our TBD section below). With all of that said, there is still a wealth of exciting movies this year, even if we have to wait a little bit longer for some of them. We ve still got a new entry from Pixar in Soul, and Gal Gadot embraces the 80s in Wonder Woman 1984. Plus, we re also getting a slew of new thrillers, horror films, animated treats, action-adventures, and more. The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly turned things upside down this year, but there are still some things we can look forward to, so start marking these titles in your calendar. [Updated on 11/5/20]Jan-Mar | Apr-June | July-Sep | Oct-Dec | TBDBreakdown of 2020 Movie DelaysThe Best Movies of 2019 | The Most Anticipated Movies of 2021JanuaryThe Grudge (2020) 21%Directed by: Nicolas PesceStarring: Andrea Riseborough, Betty Gilpin, John Cho, Demian Bichir, Lin ShayeOpening on: January 3, 2020A remake of the American remake of the Japanese horror favorite, Grudge once again focuses on a vengeful ghost with a long memory. Harrison Ford takes the lead human role, while Buck himself looks to be entirely CGI.The Invisible Man (2020) 91%Directed by: Leigh WhannellStarring: Elisabeth Moss, Aldis Hodge, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Storm ReidOpening on: February 28, 2020After 2017 s The Mummy failed to launch Universal s cinematic universe of classic monsters, they handed the reins of The Invisible Man over to their horror partners at Blumhouse for a modern, updated standalone feature. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) 95% You d be forgiven for thinking A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood was a biopic of American children s television icon Fred Rogers, especially considering an acclaimed documentary about the man was released just last year and Tom Hanks, who plays him in the new film, is plastered across all of the marketing. Directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), the based-on-true-events story actually follows the account of journalist Tom Junod, who was assigned to profile Rogers for Esquire magazine and ended up forging a close friendship with him. Matthew Rhys plays a stand-in for Junod named Lloyd Vogel, a cynical writer who approaches the interview with the intent of rooting out a flaw and publishing a juicy exposé. Instead, Rogers gets Vogel to open up about his troubled past, and the two come to a mutual understanding as Vogel s mistrust melts away. Critics say A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is, as expected, powerful and moving in its portrait of Fred Rogers, but it s also clever in the way it filters the larger-than-life icon through the eyes of a skeptic. Tom Hanks is appropriately charming, and Matthew Rhys is equally effective as the man whose walls gradually come down, and Marielle Heller s direction offers just enough surprises to ensure the emotional charge of the film feels more authentically sweet than cloying. Just make sure to bring the tissues for this one.
(Click to enlarge.)After five grueling rounds, we can finally declare that Godzilla has won the Movie Monster Showdown, proving that he is, in fact, the King of the Monsters! As it turned out, the only opponent that gave our favorite radioactive lizard anything close to a challenge was King Kong, who lost to Godzilla by a margin of 54% to 46% in the final round of voting. Until that point, the closest match-up the killer kaiju faced was from Pirates of the Caribbean s Kraken, who failed to muster higher than 16% of the vote. On the other hand, while Kong also defeated all of his opponents pretty handily, his average margin of victory was a bit slimmer, with his greatest challenge coming from the T-Rex of Jurassic Park. Will the latest big screen face-off between the two, Godzilla vs. Kong, finish with a similar result? Only those who have seen the film know the answer. Thanks again to everyone who participated, and we hope you had as much fun following along with the contest as we had putting it together. You never know when the next showdown bracket will appear on RT, so stay tuned, and stay out of the way of any giant monsters stomping through your city.Recommended: Godzilla vs. Kong First ReviewsRecommended: Godzilla vs. Kong Who Wins?Recommended: All Godzilla Movies Ranked

Ghcxuf (Photo by DC Universe)With Friday’s episode of Titans, the members of the Doom Patrol not only made their live-action debut on DC Universe, but also teased their own upcoming eponymous series thanks to voice cameos from stars Brendan Fraser and Matt Bomer and an in-the-flesh appearance by co-star April Bowlby. Portrayed as a group of misfits sheltering fellow oddity Garfield Logan (Ryan Potter), the characters also distinguished themselves from the Titans cast thanks to their strange circumstances, humor, and a family dynamic Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) is far from cultivating.Who and what are the Doom Patrol? How far back does the group s DC Comics history go, and what does it say about the upcoming series? Read on for a primer on the world’s strangest heroes.Secret Origins(Photo by DC Universe)The Doom Patrol debuted as a strip in 1963 My Greatest Adventure #80, written by Arnold Drake and Bob Haney with art by Bruno Premiani. The initial four-member team was comprised of Rita Farr (a.k.a. Elasti-girl), an Olympic swimmer-turned-actor who can stretch to tremendous sizes after she is exposed to unusual volcanic gases; Cliff Steele (a.k.a. Robotman), a race car driver whose brain is saved after a car crash destroys his body; Larry Trainor (a.k.a. Negative Man), a test pilot whose body became negatively charged after exposure to radiation during a test-flight; and Dr. Niles Caulder (a.k.a. The Chief), a paraplegic genius and inventor who inspires the rest to use their augmented abilities for the greater good even as their conditions leave them outcast from a society which fears and hates them. If the premise reminds you of X-Men, which debuted two months after the first Doom Patrol strip, Drake always suspected Stan Lee somehow caught wind of his concept — though in his later years, he suggested they both reached for fruit from the same creative vineyard independently and simultaneously. While Drake s new superhero strip saved My Greatest Adventure from cancellation, the title was renamed Doom Patrol five issues later. In 1965 s Doom Patrol #99, Garfield Logan (a.k.a. Beast Boy) was introduced as the survivor of an experimental cure for a rare disease which gave him the ability to change into any animal. He remained with the group for a time before seeking his fortune in Hollywood and joining the Titans West.Doom Patrol itself survived another three years before its popularity declined and the book was finally cancelled. In response to the cancellation and his own anger toward DC at the time, Drake took the highly unusual step of killing off the team.A new team created by writer Paul Kupperburg — featuring a revived Robotman, a new Negative Woman, and Caulder’s previously unseen wife Celsius — emerged in 1977, but failed to capture the imagination of readers during an infamous downturn in DC s fortunes known as The DC Implosion. Ten years later, Kupperburg tried again with a third Doom Patrol team, but he was replaced in issue #18 by Grant Morrison. The new take on the team, which saw Robotman, the Chief, and Negative Man return with new additions like Crazy Jane — a woman with dissociative personality disorder and a superpower for each of her personas — and a mobile, conscious street known as Danny — yes, an actual sentient city street — is considered one of the definitive versions thanks to its surrealist adventures and reinvention of the Chief as the team’s ultimate enemy. After Morrison’s departure, writers including Rachel Pollack, John Arcrudi, John Byrne, and Keith Giffen took over Doom Patrol to varying degrees of success. In 2016, My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way revamped the concept for his DC Young Animal label. Featuring art by Nick Darrington, the new Doom Patrol went in new strange directions while honoring a lot of what came before — Robotman was present as ever while Danny became a world all his own.A Titans Debut(Photo by DC Universe)Much of Drake and Haney’s concept is on display within the Doom Patrol episode of Titans, with hints of Morrison s influence. Fraser gives Cliff a wistful tone as Rachel (Teagan Croft) describes her dinner to him. Bomer’s Negative Man is the definition of hip. Rita Farr (April Bowlby) tries her best to keep her studio-trained composure, but it is easy to see the cracks in her facade as her powers always seem to get the best of her. As a group, though, the strong bond between them is already on display. At this point in Titans own story, it is a welcome relief to see some superpowered beings acting as a family — but it also offers a tease of the dynamic viewers will eventually see on Doom Patrol. With the Chief, played in the episode by a menacing Bruno Bichir, Caulder’s seeming benevolence falls away pretty quickly. By the time he has Rachel strapped to a hospital bed, one is willing to believe he arranged the accidents that caused Cliff, Larry, and Rita to become super-powered oddities.Arguably the most important character to introduce here was Cliff. As a member of every Doom Patrol iteration, he is the de facto face of the whole concept. His condition — a human brain in a robot body — also makes him one of the easiest Doom Patrol characters to “get” and bond with. Luckily, Fraser voices the character as though he’d been playing Cliff for years, which is important as he will be playing Robotman for a long time to come.Doom Patrol 2019(Photo by DC Universe)That long time to come will begin next year with the arrival of DC Universe’s Doom Patrol series. Fraser, Bomer, and Bowlby return as their characters, but actors Jake Michaels and Dwain Murphy, who inhabited the Robotman and Negative Man suits, have been replaced by Riley Shanahan and Matthew Zuk. And in a move that may seem surprising, one key Doom Patrol member will have a new face when they make the leap to their own series: the Chief. In August, the streaming service announced that former James Bond, Timothy Dalton, would take over the Niles Caulder role. It is an inspired choice as Dalton is capable of both the compassion and menace Caulder can offer in equal measure. And after seeing Bichir’s take on the character, it makes sense to dial back Caulder to someone who would believably inspire the devotion Cliff, Larry, and Rita seem to have for the man.Plus there is a story point to be built from Caulder suddenly having a new personality, face, and accent: In the early Doom Patrol strips, the gang did not know the Chief s real name. Circumstances ultimately forced him to divulge these details, but it established Caulder s secretive tendencies. And what better way to establish the grandiose nature of the Chief s secretiveness on screen than for Cliff, Larry, and Rita to learn the man they thought gave them a home was nothing but a proxy? The group seems off to a fine start as Fraser, Bomer, and Bowlby offer the three key characters a lot of life. On the Doom Patrol series, Diane Guerrero will join them as Crazy Jane from Grant Morrison s run. The team will face off against Alan Tudyk’s Mr. Nobody, a character created by Drake for one issue but expanded upon by Morrison into a major team antagonist. The inclusion of the Morrison characters suggests the show will be more consciously absurd than their appearance on Titans would suggest, which would definitely be the right tone for this group. Additionally, missing Titan Cyborg (Jovian Wade) will give the Doom Patrol a mission that is difficult to refuse, but will completely alter their lives forever. The 13-episode series from longtime DC TV producer Greg Berlanti and Being Human s Jeremy Carver is expected to debut in February 2019.It is unclear, however, if Danny the Street will make his presence known.New episodes of Titans are released Fridays on DC Universe. Doom Patrol will premiere in 2019. 😈😈

And based on your love of The Haunting of Bly Manor, this hand-selected list is scary good and will hopefully be haunting your next few binge sessions.Bly Manor stars some of the same faces from Hill House, including Victoria Pedretti, Henry Thomas, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Carla Gugino, and others, and adds newcomers like Benjamin Evan Ainsworth and Amelie Bea Smith.

Sundance may be famous for setting the terms of the indie film conversation of the year, but the film festival also serves as a launching platform for new horror voices that become successes later on. As the home to Hereditary, The Babadook, Get Out, and The Blair Witch Project, the Sundance Midnight program has a bit of a reputation, leaving this year’s selection with some pretty big shoes to fill. This year, genre spread to other sections of the programming, as fans needn’t have stayed up late at the Park City Library to catch some disturbing or just plain weird movies. No matter what your favorite genre is, you were bound to find something up your alley, from unusual documentaries to scary movies to fantastical comedies. And the good news is that distributors and streaming services are likely to snatch them up and make them available to you soon, with some of them already on the way. With expectations high, the question of what will be this year’s Hereditary-style hit is constantly brought up. We checked out the films competing to become this year’s big breakout hit, and rounded up what the critics were saying, so you can begin preparing your watchlists of what Sundance films are most likely to make a big impression once they get released. His House (2020) 100%(Photo by Aidan Monaghan courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixRelease Date: TBDNetflix’s big acquisition at Sundance is this tale of horror both supernatural and human. His House tells the story of a refugee couple who flee the horrors of the South Sudan civil war and come to England to start a new life. What they find is something that doesn’t want them there, with the very walls of the house exuding a sinister vibe. What makes the film truly special is how it balances the supernatural horrors of a haunted house movie with a poignant and equally devastating immigration story of survivor’s guilt. As Benjamin Lee wrote for The Guardian, “The haunting that takes place is one that’s tied to something that feels real.” Netflix will release His House some time later this year, and once it does, you can expect a movie that will make audiences scream, all while getting people to empathize with a refugee couple’s story by way of a haunted apartment,” as RogerEbert.com’s Nick Allen puts it.Save Yourselves! When Su suggests they get away without technology in order to cleanse themselves during a life-reaffirming week, they find themselves having to fight off adorable poof-like aliens that remind us of a cuter version of Critters, as the rest of the world is already under attack. Rachel Wagner from Rachel Reviews writes that the film “is not only a very funny look at modern Millennial life but a sweet romance of a couple who become stronger through facing off with aliens.” Save Yourselves! is currently looking for distribution.Relic (2020) 92%(Photo by Jackson Finter courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDThe best horror often manages to be both a terrifying piece of entertainment and a poignant commentary on our reality. A remarkable debut by Natalie Erika James, Relic turns the haunted house story on its head, using the horror genre to tell an emotional story of dementia. Australian stage legend Robyn Nevin gives a terrifying yet emotionally devastating performance as a woman whose mind and body is slowly failing her, while a strange and eerie presence haunts her home. “Like Mike Flanagan before her”, writes Film School Rejects Rob Hunter, “Natalie Erika James flawlessly blends terrifying horror with the ache of humanity.” Rest assured, when Relic finally gets released, it will make you scream before it pulls on your heart strings.Run Sweetheart Run (2020) 73%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: BlumhouseRelease Date: TBDBlumhouse returns to Sundance with its second “Sweetheart”-titled movie in Run Sweetheart Run. Like last year’s Sweetheart, this movie finds a young woman having to go toe-to-toe with an inhuman monster, as we follow Ella Balinska’s Cherie on her first date in a while. The problem is that her date turns out less than stellar, and she is forced to run through the streets of Los Angeles for an entire night to escape the blood-loving monster she mistook for a chance at romance. Though critics note that the metaphors are thinly-veiled at best, Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro writes that “Run Sweetheart Run makes for an entertaining and cheeky trip centered around woman’s curse.”Bad Hair (2020) 62%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDA social thriller starring a killer weave, Bad Hair is a campy throwback to 80s horror B-movies with a whole lot on its mind. Writer-director Justin Simien returns to Sundance with a film about the importance of and controversy surrounding hair in the Black community, focusing on a lowly assistant at a TV show who gets a new hairstyle that helps her move up in her career – with some deadly, bloodthirsty consequences. Writing for That Shelf, Victor Stiff explains that the film “is a delightful horror dramedy that interrogates black women’s struggle to be true to themselves in the face of a system hellbent on snuffing out their blackness.” Bad Hair is looking for distribution.Possessor: Uncut (2020) 94%(Photo by Karim Hussain courtesy of Sundance Institute)Release Date: TBDPlaying like a horror version of Inception, Brandon Cronenberg (yes, son of David) takes us on a disturbing, bloody nightmare that’s unlike anything you’ve seen before. The film stars Andrea Riseborough as a contract killer whose consciousness gets implanted into others so she can control them into committing murders for hire that is, until she finds herself struggling to control a particularly difficult body. This is a movie that’s not for the faint of heart, as Slashfilm’s Chris Evangelista writes: “This isn’t a work designed to thrill and entertain. Instead, it’s meticulously crafted to horrify. The violence on display here is graphic to the extreme, yet it never feels cartoonish.” While the violence and blood may be too much for some viewers, critics agree that this film is a unique experience worth seeing; as Rob Hunter writes for Film School Rejects, Possessor “is fantastically and cruelly unforgettable.” Keep an eye out for Possessor as it looks for distribution.Into the Deep (2020) 100%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixRelease Date: TBDThe rare documentary to play at the midnight slot, this bone-chilling film started as an homage to Danish amateur inventor Peter Madsen before turning into an exploration of evil when Madsen murdered and dismembered Swedish journalist Kim Wall during the time the doc was being shot. Emma Sullivan’s Into the Deep features stunning footage both pre-murder and in its immediate aftermath, dealing with the shock of the filmmakers realizing what kind of subject they’re following as their film begins to resemble something akin to a horror flick. Writing for Vanyaland, Nick Johnston says, “Into the Deep is a unique beast in a documentary landscape that’s more consumed than ever with the true-crime genre, and it is a must-watch for anyone even slightly curious about the events of this bizarre and tragic crime.” Netflix will release Into the Deep later this year. The Night House (2020) 87%(Photo by Elisha Christian courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Searchlight PicturesRelease Date: TBDLike A Quiet Place in 2018, The Night House relies on sound to create a terrifying horror experience that will make your bones vibrate. After the loss of her husband, Beth (Rebecca Hall) begins to spend her nights plagued by strange dreams and creepy noises around the house. Critics spoke highly of Hall’s performance, with Birth.Movies.Death’s Ed Travis calling her a “scream queen.” They also commended the string of jump scares that shook audiences at the fest; Bloody Disgusting s Meagan Navarro explains “[the film] leaves you breathless and your heart pumping hard.” Searchlight Pictures bought the distribution rights for the film and will be releasing at a later date.Scare Me (2020) 82%(Photo by Brendan Banks courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: ShudderRelease Date: TBDNo matter how elaborate or grand a horror movie is, the scariest memories most of us have still belong to the nights we spent as youngsters listening to scary stories after dark. Scare Me takes the tale of an aspiring horror screenwriter trapped in a snowy cabin with a best-selling horror novelist telling each other stories and turns it into an exploration of the creative process and even gender politics, all while delivering a minimalist yet still spooky experience. As Daily Dead’s Heather Wixson writes, “Scare Me is an absolute delight and a real gift for both horror fans as well as those of us who can’t get enough of hearing a good story. ” Shudder will release Scare Me at a later date.Spree (2020) 67%(Photo by Rylan Perry courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: RLJE FilmsRelease Date: TBDEugene Kotlyarenko’s Spree asks, What if Joker was a streamer and wannabe influencer? The thriller-comedy, which is shot found-footage style, features Joe Keery doing his best Arthur Fleck impersonation as a guy obsessed with becoming internet famous by streaming a night of violent mayhem. It s a commentary on our collective obsession with social media, privilege, and the darkness of comment sections. What makes the film more than just a Black Mirror episode is how it infuses jokes and gags into the horror – and then seems to ask why we re laughing. Nick Allen wrote for RogerEbert.com that “Spree brilliantly shows influencer culture for the totally demented lifestyle that it is.” RLJE Films will release Spree later this year.Like this?
