This included both theatrical feature film releases and the new MCU series that have been announced for the upcoming Disney+ streaming service. Here s a rundown of everything we learned during the course of the densely packed hour-and-a-half presentation. [Editor s note: With the confirmation that the schedule Marvel revealed at its panel is the entirety of Phase 4, we have updated this article accordingly.]AVENGERS: ENDGAME OFFICIALLY TOPPLED AVATAR FOR #1 BOX OFFICE RECORDRyan FujitaniNow that Disney owns the various Fox film properties, the studio finds itself in a situation where it regularly competes against itself at the box office. Having said that, James Cameron s Avatar was very much an old school 20th Century Fox release (having been released 10 years ago), so its position as the #1 box office champion of all time might have been something Disney was okay with ending, even if the Avatar sequels are still a long-term high priority (Avatar 2 is scheduled for December 17, 2021). To that end, in late June, Marvel Studios did a special push on Avengers: Endgame, with an extra scene, in the hopes that it would top Avatar, but recent speculation was that it fell just short. Not so fast, Disney seemed to say at their Marvel Studios panel Saturday, as they announced that Avengers: Endgame will earn the 0,000 needed to beat Avatar on Sunday, July 21st, 2019. The next question: will Avatar 2 be able to beat .79 billion in early 2022?SCARLETT S JOHANSSON S BLACK WIDOW CONFIRMED FOR NEXT MAY(Photo by Marvel Studios)The downside of Marvel Studios holding back certain announcements until late July is that their fans read movie news columns, so many of them already knew that they had cast the solo Black Widow movie and started filming in late May of this year. Marvel has had an untitled movie scheduled for May 1, 2020 for well over a year, which seemed very obviously to be Black Widow since they have no other movie in the works in between Spider-Man: Far from Home and Black Widow. Having said that, there were things to show off for Black Widow, such as a first look at footage from the film (which isn t online yet), and at least one casting update. English actress Florence Pugh (Lady MacBeth; Midsommar; Amy March in Greta Gerwig s upcoming Little Women) will co-star as Yelena Belova, who in the comics is the second Black Widow after Scarlett Johansson s Natasha Romanoff. We also learned that Stranger Things David Harbour will be playing Alexei Shostakov, a.k.a. Red Guardian, and Marvel villain Taskmaster will appear in the film, though we don t yet know who is playing him.THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER TO BE FIRST MARVEL SHOW ON DISNEY+(Photo by Marvel Studios)Marvel Studios mixed things up a bit this year by giving as much time and attention to their various TV shows on the upcoming Disney+ app as they did for their feature films. Although the Disney+ app is still confirmed to launch on November 12, 2019, one surprise is that we will have to wait nearly a year before the first of the new Marvel shows appears on the service. That show will be The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, with both Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprising their roles from various Captain America and Avengers movies. The big reveal for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier came in the form of German actor Daniel Brühl, who will not only return as Baron Zemo (from Captain America: Civil War), but in a brief video was shown sporting his character s iconic purple mask. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will debut on the Disney+ app sometime in the fall of 2020 (before November 6th). It s also worth noting that all of the Disney+ titles that were announced during the panel appeared in a timeline graphic labeled as PHASE FOUR, implying that the TV series will factor into the ongoing MCU narrative.THE ETERNALS CONFIRMED FOR 2020, WITH CAST REVEALED(Photo by Marvel Studios)Ever since Angelina Jolie was the first star cast in The Eternals, there has been an assumption that she would be playing long-time Avengers member Sersi. At the panel this weekend, however, it was revealed that Jolie is instead playing Thena, the inspriation for the Greek goddess Athena. (In the comics, Thena is also Thanos cousin, but it s possible Thanos connection to The Eternals may not remain the same in the movies.) Kumail Nanjiani is also not playing the character people suspected (the speedster Makkari), but will instead play Kingo, who is a samurai Eternal in the comics, but might be interpreted differently in the MCU. The Eternals will also have a few gender swaps, as both Ajak and Makkari, who are men in the comics, will be played by women instead (Salma Hayek and Lauren Ridloff, respectively). Although Sersi seems to be absent, another 1990s Avengers member will be in The Eternals instead, with Train to Busan star Don Lee (a.k.a. Ma Dong-seok) cast as Gilgamesh, a.k.a. The Forgotten One (best known for joining the Avengers when Reed and Sue Richards of the Fantastic Four did). Marvel Studios has scheduled The Eternals for November 6, 2020.THE REAL MANDARIN WILL DEBUT IN SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS(Photo by Marvel Studios)In the comics, one of Iron Man s most iconic villains since the 1960s has been the Mandarin, which is why he was teased in the first Iron Man, and ostensibly why The Mandarin was in Iron Man 3. Except, of course, he really wasn t. The decision to not include the Mandarin in his classic depiction may have been a fortuitous one for Marvel, however, as that means the villain was available for the Shang-Chi movie, now called Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. (Shang-Chi also needed a new villain, as his original arch-nemesis, Fu-Manchu, has not aged well at all.) Relatively unknown Canadian actor Simu Liu will star as Shang-Chi, with acclaimed Hong Kong actor Tony Leung playing the real Mandarin. Awkwafina was also announced in an unknown role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which will leap into theaters on February 12, 2021.WANDAVISION TV SHOW WILL TIE INTO CAPTAIN MARVEL (AND POSSIBLY THE BIGGER MCU PICTURE)(Photo by Marvel Studios)Once you get past that title, the second Marvel Studios show on Disney+, WandaVision, has a lot of promise. In the comics, the relationship (and eventual marriage) between Scarlet Witch and the Vision has been one of the sweetest in Avengers history, but it s also had a dark side that, in the early 2000s, changed the entire Marvel Universe for a while. We re trying not to be too spoilery here, but the ways in which Scarlet Witch changed things tie directly into one of the ways in which the Marvel Cinematic Universe is expected to change later in Phase 4 (we ll just let that tease sit, and comics fans know what we re talking about, anyway). WandaVision will also directly tie into the next Doctor Strange movie (more below on that) and Captain Marvel, as Teyonah Parris will co-star as Monica Rambeau, who in Captain Marvel was the young daughter of Carol s friend Maria Rambeau. (In the comics, Monica Rambeau also becomes a superhero and Avengers member known first as Captain Marvel, and then later as Photon and Spectrum.) WandaVision will debut on Disney+ sometime between February and May of 2021.MARVEL S FIRST HORROR FILM WILL BE DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS(Photo by Marvel Studios)Doctor Strange is a character whose adventures often take place amidst dazzling color and lots of eye candy (something the first Doctor Strange movie depicted well), but there are also a lot of darker themes and concepts (one of his main villains is Nightmare, for example). With that in mind, it absolutely should not be surprising that his next film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, was revealed at SDCC as being the first scary MCU film. This movie might also be the best example of a film that Marvel Studios really had to wait to reveal until after people had seen Spider-Man: Far from Home, because otherwise, it might have ruined one of that film s biggest secrets. Benedict Cumberbatch will be joined in his sequel by Elizabeth Olsen, as a follow-up to her Disney+ show, WandaVision. In the comics, Scarlet Witch s powers are much more expansive than we ve seen so far in the MCU, but her involvement here suggests that ll change. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released on May 7, 2021, and Scott Derrickson who appropriately has some serious horror films on his resume will return to direct.FAN FAVORITE TOM HIDDLESTON WILL RETURN AS LOKI ON DISNEY+ IN 2021(Photo by Marvel Studios)Time travel is so much fun. Since Avengers: Infinity War came out over a year ago, we re going to guess that it s no longer a spoiler that Loki met a very bad end at the beginning of that movie. That was, however, until Avengers: Endgame introduced time travel elements. (Is that a spoiler? Then in no way did Avengers: Endgame have time travel.) Having said that, it s also possible that Hiddleston s Loki show on the Disney+ app might come about in some unrelated way. Of all the Disney+ shows, Loki is probably the one we know the least about, but we ve got plenty of time to speculate away on it. Loki won t debut until 2021 (probably between May and July).WHAT IF JEFFREY WRIGHT VOICED THE WATCHER IN THE FIRST DISNEY+ MARVEL SHOW?(Photo by Marvel Studios)Arguably, one of the best things Marvel Comics ever had going for it over DC Comics when it came to defining its continuity was that DC Comics did not have the long-running series, What If?, in which stories could be told outside continuity, for a stronger sense overall. In the summer of 2021, Marvel Studios will be able to experiment with that sort of storytelling in the MCU when the animated series What If ? debuts on the Disney+ service. Right now, we only know the premise of the first episode ( What If Agent Peggy Carter Became Captain America Instead of Steve Rogers? ), but the massive voice cast revealed at the panel suggests What If ? will touch nearly every corner of the MCU. Several familiar faces or voices, as it were will be reprising their roles in the show, from Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Josh Brolin as Thanos to Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger and Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster. As for Uatu the Watcher, the long-running narrator of the What If ? comics, he will be the narrator here as well, with Jeffrey Wright (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, HBO s Westworld) supplying his voice.KATE BISHOP TO JOIN JEREMY RENNER IN DISNEY+ S HAWKEYE(Photo by Marvel Studios)You might notice that the general theme to these Disney+ shows (besides What If ?) is that they feature various Avengers members who aren t otherwise likely to get their own movies (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, specifically). Another example of that is Jeremy Renner s Hawkeye, who has been around the MCU since 2011 s Thor. Comic book history is littered with attempts at bringing in new blood to aging superhero premises, but comic book writer Matt Fraction was able to do just that in 2012 when he launched a new Hawkeye series about Clint Barton s friendship with Kate Bishop, a young archer who had appropriated the Hawkeye nom du heroic. We don t yet know who will be cast as Kate Bishop, but Hawkeye will indeed be about their generational exchange when it debuts on Disney+ in the fall of 2021.NATALIE PORTMAN WILL WIELD THE HAMMER IN THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER(Photo by Marvel Studios)Even if you re not a regular comic book reader, you may recall how much media attention Marvel attracted in 2014 when they introduced a new female Thor (who was eventually revealed to be his long-time human love interest, Jane Foster). Jane Foster was also the character that Natalie Portman played in the first two Thor movies, so when Portman seemed to step away from playing Foster, some fans thought that meant we d never see a female Thor in the movies. That s partly why one of the biggest surprises to come out of Marvel s SDCC panel was that Natalie Portman will be playing the title character in Thor: Love and Thunder when it s released on November 5, 2021. Chris Hemsworth will still be in the movie too, as will his Thor: Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson, who said of her character,  I think first of all as king, she needs to find her new queen. Returning director Taika Waititi revealed that the new film was inspired by Jason Aaron s The Mighty Thor storyline from the comics, which might provide some clues as to where the story will go.THE FANTASTIC FOUR AND THE MUTANTS  ARE IN THE MCU S FUTURE(Photo by TM & Copyright (c) 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Ever since Disney acquired the Fox film and TV properties, fans have been wondering when characters like Deadpool, Fantastic Four, and the various X-Men would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Indeed, some fans apparently not familiar with what a Mysterio is even thought that we might see them introduced in Spider-Man: Far from Home. As the panel neared its end, Kevin Feige alluded to the fact that, yes, finally, Fantastic Four and the mutants (however one wants to interpret that) are now in active development for inclusion at some point. Having said that, we now know which five films are scheduled for Phase 4 in 2020 and 2021, so the earliest we might see Fantastic Four, Deadpool 3, or X-Men would be in 2022.MARVEL S PHASE 4 WILL ALSO BLACK PANTHER 2, CAPTAIN MARVEL 2, AND GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3(Photo by Marvel Studios)At one point, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was considered to be in such active development that it would be filmed this year and then released in the same slot next year that is now going to Black Widow, but that was before James Gunn was temporarily fired (he s back in Disney s good graces again). With only five movies announced for Phase 4, one might wonder about some of the obvious sequels. Well, Marvel confirmed that three of them are indeed still in the works: Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. For both Black Panther 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, the delays until no sooner than 2022 might have to do with cast scheduling, as they re both ostensibly team movies with big stars who are in high demand for other projects.TWO-TIME OSCAR WINNER MAHERSHALA ALI WILL REPLACE WESLEY SNIPES AS BLADE(Photo by Marvel Studios)When Marvel Studios put their new calendar up on the big screen at their SDCC panel this year, the last date was in 2021, indicating that Phase 4 will conclude with Thor: Love and Thunder. One new film that we now know Marvel Studios is actively developing (possibly for 2022 or 2023) is their reboot of Blade. The argument can be made that the original 1998 Blade, starring Wesley Snipes, was the first Marvel Comics adaptation to have any sort of box office success, so a new Blade movie, probably close to 25 years later, might be long overdue. For their new daywalker vampire slayer, Marvel Studios has cast two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali, who co-starred as both the villain Cottonmouth in season 1 of Netflix s Luke Cage and the villain The Prowler in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. As the panel came to a close, Kevin Feige coyly introduced Ali, who walked on stage and put on a baseball cap with BLADE emblazoned across the front before the hall went dark and the title treatment appeared on the big screen. Pretty dramatic way to end the panel, and fans went wild.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

How soon will Wolverine show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Throughout 2018, people including Feige insisted Marvel could not even begin to cook up ideas for the X-Men or Fantastic Four until the deal for the merger officially closed. There was also some talk about keeping the Fox-controlled Marvel assets separate, but that notion was later dismissed by Disney CEO Bob Iger.“There shouldn’t be two Marvels,” he said back in September.Since we previously assumed a lingering Fox contingent might delay Marvel Studios’ control of the characters, we counted out an X-Men stinger in Avengers: Endgame. Instead, we predicted Logan’s adamantium claws might appear in a 2021 mid-credits stinger scene. Now, we think it is possible — though still highly unlikely — the characters might be referenced in a singular image or a word. (It would have to be something easily shot in the next week or two as the studio could not use any of the characters or iconography until now.)But even if Marvel manages to add a Fantastic Four or X-Men tease to Endgame, that stinger moment is all we will see of the characters for some time. Marvel Studios’ 2020 output inches closer to production even if the company declines to reveal their schedule until after Endgame’s release. At this point, we know The Eternals, Black Widow, Shang-Chi, and sequels for Doctor Strange and Black Panther are in the pipeline. Presumably, three of those projects will fill the 2020 release dates. Of course, the studio has altered its plan before, bumping Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and a proposed Inhumans film to secure a place for Spider-Man: Homecoming. With that in mind, it is possible the first Marvel Studios X-Men or Fantastic Four film could happen in 2021, particularly if Feige ever gets back to Legion’s Noah Hawley about his Doctor Doom script.2. Will Dark Phoenix and New Mutants Still Be Released? While Dark Phoenix will hit theaters this June, the fate of New Mutants is more tenuous. Though still slated for an August 2 release, the film’s planned 2018 reshoots (that would change more than 50 percent of the film and introduce a new character to the story) reportedly never took place and are no longer scheduled to occur.Until the deal closed, Fox had to abide by its original agreement with Marvel Entertainment and release X-Men films at regular intervals. It also had to plan for a future in which it and Disney remained separate entities just in case the deal fell through or was delayed beyond the summer. Around this time last year, both films were pushed back to accommodate reshoots. But considering New Mutants’ additional photography never took place, it is fair to wonder if Fox delayed both films to save on development costs for other X-Men projects Marvel may eventually cancel. There is plenty to suggest this was the case and it may lead to New Mutants losing its theatrical release.3. What Other Marvel Films Did Fox Have In Development?(Photo by Mary Evans/Twentieth Century Fox / Marvel Comics/Ronald Grant/Everett Collection)Under the spirit of “business as usual” in the event the deal fell through, Fox planned to expand its output of Marvel-based films to three projects per year. The plan included more X-Men sequels while branching out with lesser known characters. One project centering on fan-favorite mutant Kitty Pryde was announced and would see Deadpool director Tim Miller returning to the X-fold. Said to be based on Uncanny X-Men #143, the film would focus on Kitty’s struggle against a N’Garai demon while spending a lonely Christmas night in the X-Mansion. Comic-book writer Brian Michael Bendis was said to be adapting the issue into a feature script for Miller. Neither has commented on the project’s prospects.Though little has been said since word first broke about the project, James Franco was set to star in a film focusing on X-Factor favorite Jamie Madrox, a.k.a. The Multiple Man. Franco’s real-life troubles may have sent this one to the back-burner, but considering X-Men characters must now compete with Shang-Chi and The Eternals for one of Marvel Studios’ coveted release dates, expect any solo X-Men outings to be a late 2020s development. Channing Tatum’s long-delayed Gambit film is also more than likely kaput. As we mentioned above, Noah Hawley signed on to develop a feature film for the greatest of Marvel villains, Doctor Doom. Recently, the Legion FX series executive producer revealed Feige asked about the draft he completed some time ago. Unfortunately, Hawley has not heard from the Marvel Studios boss since. But since we all want Doom to face off against the heroes, we hope this one works out. Finally, X-Force, the Deadpool 2 spin-off, was expected to begin shooting in late 2018 under the direction of Bad Times at the El Royale’s Drew Goddard. With cast members like Josh Brolin, Zazie Beetz, and Ryan Reynolds reprising their Deadpool 2 roles, it seemed set to become the last Fox-produced X-Men film. Sadly, Goddard refused to comment on the project following news of the acquisition’s imminent closure. And with X-Force co-creator Rob Liefeld openly discussing the film’s demise on Twitter, we’re going to assume this one is also toast.4. What About Deadpool 3?Feels like the first day of ‘Pool. pic.twitter.com/QVy8fCxgqr Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) March 19, 2019As Reynolds once joked, they may skip the third film entirely and go straight to Deadpool 4 or 5. The actor, who co-wrote the sequel with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, also said the narrative weight of taking everything away from the character in order to build him up again will only lead to diminishing returns. In light of that, he offered the possibility of playing Deadpool as a supporting character in films like X-Force. Reese and Wernick, meanwhile, have said they’d love to team Deadpool up with Spider-Man — a pairing so popular it had its own comic book.It is possible Reynolds was just cushioning himself should Marvel Studios choose not to continue with his vision of Deadpool — it is a PG-13 production house, after all — but it may also be a savvy ploy to negotiate with the company for a sweet multi-picture contract in which Deadpool shows up, does something wacky, and disappears again. It is certainly possible to tone down some of Wade Wilson’s antics for the MCU, which is what the Christmas release of a PG-13 Deadpool 2 called Once Upon a Deadpool proved.Meanwhile, Iger once told investors it is possible to carve out an R-rated niche for Marvel to allow for more D

The episode s story sees Barry and his daughter, Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy), revisiting some key moments in the show’s history. And at a celebration in Vancouver to commemorate the historic episode, Rotten Tomatoes asked members of the cast about their fondest memories working on five seasons of The Flash.Parker, who joined the series this season after a few brief cameos as Nora last year, said her favorite aspect of working on the show collides with her worst moments on set: preparing to “zoop.” The term refers to those moments when a speedster runs off screen in a burst of lighting. On set, it requires the actor to freeze in a running stance for a surprising amount of time.“Grant is a dancer and he looks the coolest [doing it.] No one looks worse at those moments than me,” Kennedy admitted, adding that a surprising number of zoop shots occur “at 4 in the morning, outside” with her “falling over take after take. I giggle so hard every time that happens, and I just go, ‘My God, my job is so silly. I’m so happy to be here.’”(Photo by Jeff Weddell/The CW)Candice Patton, who plays Kennedy s TV mom Iris West, points to the lasting friendships she s made with costar Jesse L. Martin and former castmates Keiynan Lonsdale and Rick Cosnett.“These are people for me that will be friends of mine for a lifetime. You gain such amazing relationships on shows like these because you spend so much time with people, she said, and I’m really grateful for those people who’ve made this experience for me, these last five years, safe and comfortable.”Said season 4 newcomer Hartley Sawyer (a.k.a. Team Flash addition Ralph Dibny): “The best days are when we’re all in the Cortex — or wherever we are — and we’re doing scenes [together]. Sometimes I’m driving home and laughing and wiping tears about it because the stuff that happens is so much fun. We have such a great time together.”Carlos Valdes, whose Cisco Ramon has been there from day one shares Sawyer and Patton s sentiments.“In general, it tends to be whenever Tom Cavanagh and I start making music out of nowhere, out of gibberish, out of clapping, out of the Notre Dame fight song, out of anything,” he said. “We will take anything and create an annoying 14-minute jam out of it. The crew hates us for it.”(Photo by Jeff Weddell/The CW)Executive producer Todd Helbing’s favorite moment comes from the first-season episode Out of Time. “It’s when Thawne (Cavanagh) is circling around Cisco and does the vibrating hand thing [for the first time], he said. The episode as a whole stands as a highlight for him, because it’s the first time we introduced time travel. It also featured Iris revealing her feelings for Barry, Barry telling her that he is The Flash, and a tidal wave which threatens to destroy Central City.Star Gustin, meanwhile, will always recall working on Flash Back, the second-season episode in which he travels back in time to ask for help from Cavanagh s Thawne, who was still pretending to be Harrison Wells at the time. Gustin enjoyed playing opposite Cavanagh as the villain again. He also said the pilot and the first-season finale, which both prominently feature the death of Barry’s mother Nora (Michelle Harrison), are “seared into my memory as the most visceral and emotional experiences The heart of what drives Barry Allen is built into the those two episodes.”It should then come as no surprise that filming Nora’s death scene forms a key memory for Harrison’s time on the show. Though she enjoyed getting to play Nora as the mother of an adult son in the Flashpoint storyline, “as an actress, doing that [death] scene over and over” is something she loves about the show.Of course, thanks to Barry’s mucking with time, he appears in that scene at various stages in his life and his career as The Flash. Joked Gustin, “before the series is over, the amount of Barrys at the murder scene will multiply.”The Flash s 100th episode, What s Past Is Prologue, airs Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. on The CW.

On March 2, 1984, the world was blessed by the hilarious mocku-rockumentary This Is Spinal Tap (Certified Fresh at 95%). Utilizing largely improvisational dialogue, director Rob Reiner and writers and cast members Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer, and Michael McKean created a brilliant documentary about one of the world’s worst fake rock bands. While underappreciated at first (many early viewers thought the documentary was real and complained that it “wasn’t about a popular band like Led Zeppelin”), the film has gone on to become a comedy cult classic. Now, on its 35th anniversary, we look back on what makes This Is Spinal Tap one of the greatest and most influential music films, comedies, and mockumentaries of all time.It Was GroundbreakingMockumentaries have existed in some form before This Is Spinal Tap; The Beatles’ 1964 classic A Hard Day’s Night (98%) was filmed in a mockumentary style, and Woody Allen’s Zelig (100%) marked a significant step forward towards realism in the genre. But, it wasn’t until This Is Spinal Tap in 1984 that the genre was perfected. While not a huge box office hit, This Is Spinal Tap was critically acclaimed, landing on multiple Best of 1984 lists, and it boasts a Certified Fresh 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Its status as a genre-defining piece of art has only solidified all the more in the decades since its release. The success of This Is Spinal Tap led to the celebrated filmmaking career of writer, director, and Spinal Tap lead guitarist Christopher Guest. With the same improvisational style and much of the same cast, Guest has since written and directed Certified Fresh mockumentaries like Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show, and A Mighty Wind. But the influence and acclaim extends far beyond the members of the band.(Photo by Universal Pictures)In recent years, we have seen an uptick in both the quality and the prevalence of mockumentary content. Sacha Baron Cohen s Borat was a cultural phenomenon that made nearly 0 million, scored a Certified Fresh 91% on the Tomatometer, and apparently will be quoted until the end of time; The Lonely Island s Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping took This Is Spinal Tap from 80s rock into the Bieber-fied 21st century; and Taika Waititi s What We Do In The Shadows was a quirky Sundance hit that crossed over to the mainstream with critical acclaim and spawned a television spinoff, set to premiere later this month. These three films and a number of popular current mockumentary TV programs like Documentary Now! (94%) and American Vandal (98%) all owe a debt to This Is Spinal Tap for its influence on comedy. Sitcoms like The Office or Parks Recreation might never have been as successful without the groundwork laid by Spinal Tap. And if there were no Office or American Vandal, what would the millions of millennials mainline on Netflix before bed? Would they have no reason to subscribe? And if not, would Netflix streaming ever have taken off the way it did? And if there’s no streaming content, would we all still be getting our DVDs through the mail? Now, we re not saying that This Is Spinal Tap is the reason that Roma exists, but it’s definitely one of the reasons that Best In Show, Borat, and American Vandal all exist.Real Rock Stars Understand It(Photo by Sony Pictures Classics courtesy Everett Collection)It might come as a surprise, but despite the less than stellar picture of rock-and-rollers that This Is Spinal Tap paints, many of the bands and musicians it lampoons have seen it and feel strongly about it.Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry said of the film, “When we watched Spinal Tap, my wife and I saw it, and we fell on the floor. It was great. Every bit is brilliant as it was supposed to be. So good.” On the other hand, frontman Steven Tyler didn’t find it so funny, saying, “That movie bummed me out, because I thought, ‘How dare they? That’s all real, and they’re mocking it.’”In the documentary It Might Get Loud, U2 guitarist The Edge said, “It s so hard to keep things fresh, and not to become a parody of yourself. And if you ve ever seen that movie Spinal Tap, you will know how easy it is to parody what we all do. The first time I ever saw it, I didn t laugh. I wept. I wept because I recognized so much and so many of those scenes.”The phrase “Spinal Tap Moment” has even entered the rock lexicon. It Made Rob Reiner into a Director(Photo by Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Prior to directing This Is Spinal Tap, Rob Reiner was best known as Michael Stivic, the meathead son-in-law of Archie Bunker in the hit sitcom All In The Family. Whether the world needed another TV adaptation of The Stand (there was a 1994 version with Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald) is a fair question, particularly when the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage around us. If it was just a reminder of the world around us, the answer might be no. But approached as an intriguing diversion, it works. — Bill Goodykontz, Arizona Republic The apocalypse isn t the point – it s simply the backdrop for what is unabashedly an epic modern fantasy. — Joshua Sargent, San Francisco Chronicle In a year ravaged by a far different virus, The Stand carries a different significance as it closes out a year terrifyingly similar to the story on screen. Told over nine episodes, including an all-new ending written by Stephen King and his son Owen, this new version of The Stand is a very uncomfortable story to watch while the world is mired in a real pandemic but still manages to be a faithful adaptation of King s masterpiece with timely updates that more or less work. — Alex Maidy, Jo Blo s Movie NetworkAny Final Thoughts?(Photo by Robert Falconer/CBS ©2020 CBS Interactive, Inc. This adaptation of one of Stephen King’s most dense, sprawling works never quite reaches the epic scope illustrated so clearly in the 1978 novel. — Roxana Hadadi, Variety It s a sometimes overstuffed, sometimes overly simple book, but also one whose vision of a fantastic America whose potential for greatness and moral clarity is always at war with its self-destructive impulses. Even if many missed it at the time, King found a way to express an underlying truth about the place he calls home. From the very first scene, in which his character Dignan oversees an escape plan for his friend Anthony (Luke Wilson), who’s casually checking out of a voluntary psychiatric hospital, you’re sucked in by his energy, a weird mix of motor-mouthed enthusiasm and childlike wonder and sensitivity. But Wilson had a point. As the film’s co-writer, Bottle Rocket was his baby — the other parent was co-writer and director Wes Anderson, a friend he met at the University of Texas at Austin — and his one shot. Perhaps he wanted to ensure the duo’s unique sensibilities were not muddied by the compromises that would inevitably come when first-timers make a big studio-backed movie. Maybe he figured starring in front of the camera and doing quality control behind it would be too much to take on. (This worry wasn’t unfounded: Bottle Rocket, which started shooting in 1994 and didn’t hit theaters until two years later, was plagued with rewrites, reshoots, and post-production woes.)The film follows Wilson’s wannabe-thief of a ringleader as he and his zen-like friend Anthony and their rich pal Bob (Robert Musgrave) — three people who have no business breaking bad — pull off jobs to fall into the good graces of a bohemian crime boss (James Caan). While on the lam at a motel, Anthony, who doesn’t speak Spanish, falls for the only person he thinks understands him, Inez (Lumi Cavazos), who doesn’t speak English. Bottle Rocket is full of absurd setups like this, but somehow feels grounded and gentle, with an assured, invigorating directorial style. So to celebrate it turning twenty-five — Bottle Rocket was released in theaters on February 21, 1996 — and in anticipation of Anderson’s upcoming The French Dispatch, here are five reasons it remains special.Audiences Mostly Didn t Get It But the Right People Did(Photo by Deana Newcomb/©Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Martin Scorsese picked Bottle Rocket as one of the ten best films of the 1990s. James L. Brooks liked the short “Bottle Rocket,” which played at Sundance, so much that he flew down to Dallas to meet “the boys” in their “flop” — his words — and greenlit the feature, which was put out by Columbia Pictures. Paul Schrader said he’d never seen a character like Dignan onscreen before — high praise from the creator of Travis Bickle. And Walt Disney Studios chair Joe Roth saw enough in Anderson and Wilson to bankroll their follow-up, Rushmore, for double Bottle Rocket’s budget. But audiences, particularly the ones in test screenings, didn’t share that enthusiasm. “I’d never felt so humiliated,” Anderson recalled in the Criterion Collection commentary for Bottle Rocket, reliving a screening when dozens left the theater before the credits rolled. What’s more, Bottle Rocket didn’t get into Sundance, the festival that screened the original “Bottle Rocket” short to acclaim. “It was kind of like the end of the world,” Anderson said of the snub in Matt Zoller Seitz’s book The Wes Anderson Collection. When the film finally did come out, it pulled in roughly 0 grand at the box office, or about a tenth of its budget. It Introduced Us to the Brothers WilsonCritics, however, dug Bottle Rocket, which is Certified Fresh at 85%. A big part of the appeal back in ’96 was that it debuted these fresh-faced unknowns, Owen and Luke Wilson, who are both arresting in their own ways. Over the next decade, Owen and Luke would go on to become a comedic powerhouse and something of a kind-eyed leading man, respectively, and you can already see them playing to those strengths here. The two have an undeniable chemistry, with Luke’s more level-headed Anthony trying to temper — and inevitably indulging — the unrealistic expectations of Owen’s Dignan. Five years later, they would offer a more drama-tinged spin on this dynamic as another pair of brotherly longtime friends in The Royal Tenenbaums. It’s also worth shouting out Andrew Wilson, Owen and Luke’s older sibling IRL, who plays Future Man, the bullying brother of Bob in the movie, for his comic chops. The Dialogue Is Loose, Fast, and QuotableWes Anderson has made a name for himself with his stylized visual calling cards, yes, but also his dialogue, which tends to feature lines that drip with irony, often delivered after pauses. Those lines are in Bottle Rocket — Dignan’s declaration that “Bob’s gone; he stole his car” springs to mind — but those deliberate beats are less prevalent. There are two scenes — a walk-and-talk before a “practice job” and an argument while planning a bookstore robbery — when the characters talk over each other in a way that feels naturalistic and almost a bit improvised. But the constant throughout, whether Anderson lets a line linger or not, is that Bottle Rocket’s script stays buoyant and truly funny. We’re partial to this exchange, when Dignan tries to ease a distressed Anthony with a picture of Mr. Henry’s crew:DIGNAN: Fact: I learned more in the two months I spent with Mr. Henry and his crew than I learned in 15 years of academic study. Fact: I can guarantee you after Mr. Henry sees us pull this job, he’s gonna take a personal interest in our future. Fact: Mr. Henry drives a Jaguar. ANTHONY: Fact: Dignan, the picture’s not doing it for me right now. DIGNAN: Well, does the fact that I’m trying to do it do it for you? It Hints at What s to Come from Wes Anderson(Photo by Deana Newcomb/©Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)About that style: Bottle Rocket isn’t as in-your-face with the Wes-isms as his later work. You won’t find any backdrops as meticulously designed as Margot’s bedroom in The Royal Tenenbaums or any breakdowns as breathtaking as the ship’s in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. But his penchants are on display. There are some choice needle drops of ’60s songs (the Rolling Stones’ “2000 Man,” Love’s “Seven and Seven Is”), as well as a slow-motion walk, a letter read aloud, a “binoculars” shot, references to inspirations like The 400 Blows, and other ingredients he’s synonymous with now. It Maintains an Indie/Outsider Spirit(Photo by ©Columbia Pictures)For all of its stylistic confidence, Bottle Rocket feels like you re watching a group of friends make a movie. To be fair, that s not far off base: Anderson, the Wilsons, Musgrave, and supporting actors like Kumar Pallana and his son, Dipak, were pals. Some were occasionally roommates. Scenes were shot at St. Mark s, where the Wilsons attended and from which Owen was expelled. Bottle Rocket has an intimate, singular quality you don’t always get from a big-budget film. And while Anderson’s canvases would grow a lot bigger in subsequent films, something from Bottle Rocket would always remain a constant: stories that pull for underdogs, and outsiders that exist in their own little sealed-off worlds.Bottle Rocket was released in theaters on February 21, 1996.On an Apple device? It was another fight for the top spot at the box office between the Demon Slayer and the Mortal Kombatants – though this weekend s earnings suggest repeat business is not in the cards for theatrical viewings just yet. Even though the options have been limited, the big titles still continue to deal with challenges of reduced capacity and the alternative to view them at home at the time of premiere or after a few weeks. Godzilla vs. Kong, Tenet, and The Croods: A New Age are still the only films to gross more than million since the pandemic began; though, on the bright side, the million club is starting to get more crowded and it looks like last week’s releases may be headed for membership there.King of the Crop: Demon Slayer Finishes on Top of Mortal Kombat, as Both Aim To Crack Million(Photo by © Aniplex / Courtesy Everett Collection)Funimation’s hit anime Demon Slayer, which topped the box office this weekend after coming in second last weekend, had actually been slowly gaining on Mortal Kombat’s total earnings throughout the week. Mortal Kombat led .32 million to .14 million after last Sunday; by Thursday, the race closed to .85 million–.70 million. While Demon may still trail overall, congratulations is in order to it pulling out the victory this weekend by an estimated margin of .4 million–.2 million; however, you may note that is a significant drop-off from last weekend for both genre films, and with no real competition to draw people away. Up until now, the biggest drop-off for a wide release during the pandemic was the 67.1 percent fall of Wonder Woman 1984 from Christmas weekend to New Year s weekend. With a respective .4 million and .2 million each, Demon Slayer and Mortal Kombat fell 70 percent and 73 percent.That brings their estimated totals to million for Mortal Kombat and .2 million for Demon Slayer on their 10th days of release, which is higher than Wonder Woman 1984 (.43 million), Tom Jerry (.84 million), and Raya and the Last Dragon (.04 million). All of those films are now part of the million– to million–gross club at the moment — and each of them also had or have same-day streaming options. That is something Demon Slayer does not offer as of yet. Those three films also grossed between .42 million and .5 million in their second weekends. The drops could stabilize next week, but looking back to normal times, both Super Troopers 2 and the 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street remake were the only April wide releases to drop over 70 percent in their second weekends. From their 11th days on, Elm Street grossed just an additional .6 million and Troopers Deux made only .4 million more. That was with theaters open in full and no pandemic. But it was also with more competition. So million is not out of the running for Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer, but the numbers are suggesting they will more likely be joining the second tier. Then again, given the circumstances, they are still amongst the highest-grossing films during this difficult period in history. The 0 Million Watch: Godzilla vs. Kong Inches Towards Headline-Grabbing Milestone
