LADY BIRD DIRECTOR GRETA GERWIG TAPPED FOR BARBIE MOVIE(Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)The toy company Mattel has been attempting to get a live action Barbie movie going for a few years now, including an effort at Sony that almost featured first Amy Schumer, and then Anne Hathaway. The Barbie movie eventually moved to Warner Bros. late last year, at which point their Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie also started talks to star in the film. At first, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins had also been in talks to helm Barbie, but this week, Warner Bros. instead hired Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Certified Fresh at 99%), who will also adapt the screenplay with Lady Bird co-writer Noah Baumbach. The premise isn t known yet, but it s expected that it will no longer be anything like the story it would have been with Schumer or Hathaway. Warner Bros. had previously scheduled Barbie for May 8, 2020, but this news may mean it will be delayed.3. EMMA STONE AND BRAD PITT MAY CO-STAR IN DAMIEN CHAZELLE S BABYLON(Photo by Jef Hernandez, Gregorio Binuya/Everett Collection)We re now less than two weeks from the release of Quentin Tarantino s ninth film as director, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is his tribute to the Los Angeles of the 1960s. Tarantino is not the only director revisiting the Hollywood of the past, though, as La La Land director Damien Chazelle is preparing for his next film, Babylon, which will be set in the silent era of the 1920s. Emma Stone is now in talks to reunite with Chazelle on Babylon, which might start filming before her starring role in Disney s 101 Dalmatians prequel Cruella (12/23/2020). In a move that would really tie Babylon to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Brad Pitt is also reportedly circling the film. Babylon will reportedly be an R-rated movie in the three hour range with a budget of between million and 0 million, with Lionsgate and Paramount among the studios vying to distribute.4. POP SINGER HARRY STYLES MAY JOIN DISNEY S THE LITTLE MERMAID AS PRINCE ERIC (Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)In just a few weeks, we ve gone from not knowing when Walt Disney Pictures might ever remake The Little Mermaid to having almost every major role cast (pretty much everyone but King Triton and Sebastian the singing crab). All in the same week, actually, Disney started negotiating with Melissa McCarthy (as the octopus sea witch Ursula), Awkwafina (as Scuttle the seagull), Room star Jacob Tremblay (as Flounder the fish), and Halle Bailey as the title character of Ariel. We can also now report that Disney is in early talks with One Direction pop singer Harry Styles to star as the film s romantic male lead, Prince Eric. The live action remake of The Little Mermaid will be directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Mary Poppins Returns).5. BAZ LUHRMANN FINDS HIS ELVIS(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)Following the staggering success of Bohemian Rhapsody and the pretty good numbers for Elton John s Rocketman, the musical biopic has come back in a big way. There are several similar projects now in the works, including biopics for Boy George and Aretha Franklin (with Jennifer Hudson attached), and a Mamma Mia! style jukebox musical featuring the music of Prince. Right up there with The Beatles, one of the biggest stars never to receive a big budget Hollywood biopic is the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, but that s exactly what Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann is getting ready to work on next. In the same week as the Little Mermaid casting news earlier this month, we also learned about the various contenders to play Elvis (including Ansel Elgort, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Miles Teller, and One Direction s Harry Styles, who will apparently co-star in The Little Mermaid instead.) Baz Luhrmann s Elvis will be Austin Butler of MTV s The Shannara Chronicles, with Tom Hanks already attached to co-star as Colonel Tom Parker.6. GIRLS TRIP DIRECTOR TAKING OVER SPACE JAM 2(Photo by Michael Gibson/©Universal Pictures)Until this week, Space Jam 2 was to have marked the big budget studio debut of director Terence Nance, whose first film was the 2013 independent drama An Oversimplification of Her Beauty. Citing differing visions, Warner Bros. and producer and star LeBron James have now hired director Malcolm D. Lee to direct Space Jam 2. Although his most recent film, Night School, received a Rotten Tomatometer score at 27%, Lee s two prior films both received Certified Fresh scores: Barbershop: The Next Cut at 90% and Girls Trip at 91%. We don t yet know which NBA stars will be joining LeBron yet, but Don Cheadle signed on last week. Warner Bros. has scheduled Space Jam 2 for July 16, 2021, which is the week after Indiana Jones 5, and the week before Mission: Impossible 7.7. FIRST TEASER TRAILER REVEALS WHAT THE HUNT IS ABOUT (SPOILER: IT S ABOUT A HUNT) (Photo by Universal Pictures)There was once a time when people often didn t know that a movie even existed, much less what the film was about, before the first trailer came out. These days, however, mainstream cinema is dominated by sequels, remakes, and adaptations of comics and video games, the news of which break months or years ahead of time (for example: this column). In that climate, then, it s rather refreshing when we have a movie like The Hunt (9/27/2019), which was just described as a political thriller until the teaser trailer was released this week. As it turns out, the title was quite literal, as the movie now appears to be nearly a remake of the classic story and film, The Most Dangerous Game, as twelve strangers find themselves being hunted by the uber-wealthy on a private estate.Rotten Idea2. ARCADE CLASSIC SPACE INVADERS GETTING AN ADAPTATION(Photo by Producers Distribution Agency/Courtesy Everett Collection)This year s Pokémon Detective Pikachu made Tomatometer history with the first Fresh rating (at 67%) ever for a mainstream video game movie. While it s great that this long-standing Rotten record was broken, it s only a mere step in the right direction for the genre; video game movies still trend towards Rotten, even though we continue to hope that will change someday. One of the oldest video game franchises is Space Invaders, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year in 2018, Warner Bros. has been developing a Space Invaders movie for several years now. This week, the Space Invaders movie moved forward with the hiring of screenwriter Greg Russo, who is also working on another video game movie, the Mortal Kombat reboot (3/5/2021). Good luck, Greg!1. STRANGER THINGS BILLY REVEALS POWER RANGERS TO BE REBOOTED YET AGAIN (Photo by © Lionsgate)Ostensibly, one of the reasons a movie might cast several young up-and-comers is that if there are ever sequels, the franchise might benefit from getting in early on the careers of promising young stars. For example, just two years after the 2017 Power Rangers reboot, its cast seems to be in a pretty great place, as the Pink Ranger was played by Naomi Scott (Jasmine from Aladdin), and the Red Ranger was played by Dacre Montgomery (Billy from Stranger Things). (And that s without mentioning Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, or Barry star Bill Hader as the voice of Alpha 5.) So, it was a crazy headscratcher this week when Dacre Montgomery revealed that Power Rangers is being rebooted once again, with another completely new cast. Although it is true that the 2017 reboot received a Rotten score at 50%, that was actually a step up from the older films, like the first movie in 1995, which was Rotten at 37%.Like this? 5.56.8 2月喜迎As more and more people are compelled to practice social distancing and encouraged to stay home, as movie theaters temporarily shutter their doors, and as studios continue to pull their scheduled 2020 films off the release calendar, we ve decided to reformat the Critics Consensus column to focus on titles that are newly available on the home entertainment market. With that in mind, our list of digital and streming new releases this week includes a political satire written and directed by Jon Stewart, a big man/little girl comedy, and a musical spoof. See below for details.
(Photo by new Line Cinema/ courtesy Everett Collection)All Jackie Chan Movies RankedConsidering how often Jackie Chan movie titles were changed on their journey to America, it s understandable to be confused going through his films – even after you ve watched them. Like, did Operation Condor 2 come out before the first Operation Condor? Is Supercop actually part of the Police Story franchise? How many new Police Stories are there, anyways? This is alleviated by the fact that you could just throw your hands up and pick a random Jackie Chan movie from the 80s and, chances are, it s gonna be pretty dang good. Police Story and Police Story 2 were made during this decade (and have been added to The Criterion Collection), along with Project A, Project A2, and Armour of God – all representing an explosive debut of a relentless entertainer willing to leap off buildings, hang on the sides of fast-moving vehicles, avoiding heavy lethal objects at the last second, and do just about every punishing stunt conceivable for our enjoyment. And the batting average for Jackie Chan movies in the 90s is nothing to scoff at either. This was the era that brought him international fame, starting with 1995 s Rumble in the Bronx, which led to more eyes on previous films, like Legend of the Drunken Master, and the projects that followed, like Supercop. And Chan resurrected the buddy action/comedy with Owen Wilson in Shanghai Noon, and Chris Tucker in Rush Hour, where people to this day are still hoping for a third sequel. (Fun fact: Rotten Tomatoes founder Senh Duong was inspired to create the site after an inconvenient night searching for reviews on movies like First Strike and Who Am I?. So no Jackie Chan, no Rotten Tomatoes. And then where would we be? The dark ages, that s where.)After a string of mediocre big-budget Hollywood affairs (The Tuxedo, The Medallion, and The Spy Next Door among them), Chan has mainly been working in China, continuing to produce, direct, and explore more dramatic roles. And with Rumble in the Bronx celebrating the 25th anniversary of its American release, we re taking a look back (stretching first, so as to not hurt ourselves) on every Jackie Chan movie and ranking them by Tomatometer!
Few industries enjoy taking really, really long extended holiday vacations quite like Hollywood, and when we get to this time of the year, there s rarely much in the realm of movie development news to discuss. So, this week and next, we re going to review 12 of the year s top stories, presented to you in monthly chronology. The year-in-review begins with the Fresh Developments which here also serve (mostly) as the Top Stories of the year.JANUARY: BLACK WIDOW MOVIE FINALLY ANNOUNCED(Photo by Marvel Studios)Marvel Studios hasn t had a big slate announcement since 2014, and we didn t get one in 2018 either, but project-by-project, this may have been the biggest such year since. It started in January with confirmation that a solo Black Widow was now, finally, in development. Black Widow continued to receive a steady stream of news stories, as the director shortlist started at 60 in May, was narrowed in June to just three, and led up to Australian director Cate Shortland landing the job in July. We also learned in October that Scarlett Johansson will receive a million pay equity with her male co-stars for Black Widow, in the same week that Black Panther 2 moved forward in development. Other Marvel Studios movies that made the news this year included Ms. Marvel (A.K.A. Kamala Khan), The Eternals, and earlier in December, both Doctor Strange 2, and Shang-Chi: Master of Kung-Fu. FEBRUARY: GAME OF THRONES SHOWRUNNERS GET THEIR OWN STAR WARS PROJECTS (Photo by Steve Granitz/Getty Images)Just a few months after the November, 2017 news that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson was developing a new Star Wars trilogy (after next year s Star Wars: Episode IX), we learned about another set in February. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the showrunners of HBO s popular Game of Thrones, are now writing and producing at least one film, a trilogy, or several films in the Star Wars universe, though the nature of their project has yet to be confirmed. Having said that, the popular rumor as of this writing suggests movies based on the popular Knights of the Old Republic setting, which is best known for inspiring a series of video games. Something that we didn t know in February (and Lucasfilm and Disney probably didn t know this either) was that Solo: A Star Wars Story would turn out to be a box office disappointment, prompting Disney to slow down or outright cancel most of their prequel spinoff Star Wars Story projects. That development presumably puts the new Rian Johnson and Benioff/Weiss projects even closer to production than they have otherwise been.MARCH: AVA DUVERNAY INVOKES DC COMICS THE NEW GODS (Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Paramount Pictures)In late 2017, director Ava DuVernay (Selma, A Wrinkle in Time) revealed on Twitter that her favorite superhero was Big Barda of DC’s New Gods, a comic created by former Marvel artist and Stan Lee collaborator Jack Kirby. In March, we learned that she may have been teasing talks that she had either started or was considering having, because DuVernay is now developing a New Gods movie. Warner Bros. attempted to develop an animated New Gods movie back in the late 1990s, and though the project was never realized, it now looks like it’ll happen after all, and the studio has brought DuVernay on board to direct it. No screenwriter has been named yet, but Warner Bros. will obviously be making that next hiring a priority. This piece suggests why Ava Duvernay is potentially a great choice for The New Gods, and this one explains who some of these characters are, exactly.APRIL: A BIG YEAR FOR STEVEN SPIELBERG: BLACKHAWK, INDIANA JONES 5, WEST SIDE STORY, THE COLOR PURPLE(Photo by Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Director Steven Spielberg had a huge year in announcements, partly buoyed by the Certified Fresh release of Ready Player One in March. It actually started off in January with confirmation of his (previously already talked about) plans for Indiana Jones 5 and his remake of West Side Story. The first big new project this year, though, came in April, when Spielberg started development at Warner Bros. of a Blackhawk movie, based on the long-running comic about a squad of World War II pilot-adventurers. West Side Story also had a few big casting announcements this year, including Ansel Elgort as Tony, and original West Side Story star Rita Moreno, not as Anita, but as a reimagined take on neighborhood shopkeeper Doc. We also found out last month that Steven Spielberg is partnering with Oprah Winfrey on a musical remake of The Color Purple.MAY: ANNABELLE: CREATION AND HAPPY DEATH DAY SEQUELS ANNOUNCED(Photo by New Line Cinema)Superhero movies (like Avengers: Infinity War and Aquaman) are obviously crushing it right now at the box office, but they also tend to have pretty big budgets. Horror films do well, too, and they re a lot cheaper to produce. One such example is New Line Cinema s The Conjuring franchise, which includes the creepy doll spinoff Annabelle and its prequel Annabelle: Creation. The Conjuring 3 doesn t come out until 2020 (9/11/2020), but we learned in May that Annabelle 3 (7/3/2019) was likely to beat it to release. The Blumhouse horror production company also quickly moved forward with plans for Happy Death Day 2U, the sequel to last year s 3 million Groundhog Day-like hit. We also learned in October that the Warrens (based on the real paranormal investigators) will be joining one of the non-Conjuring films in the franchise for the first time, as Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will reprise their roles in the third Annabelle movie.JUNE: THIS YEAR IN STEPHEN KING: DOCTOR SLEEP, FIRESTARTER, AND THE CASTING OF IT CHAPTER TWO(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection, Warner Bros.)Although 2017 was obviously not a great year for The Dark Tower (Rotten at 16%), the success of the other major Stephen King movie last year drastically offset it. IT was both Certified Fresh at 85% and a tremendous box office hit, earning 0+ million worldwide from a budget of just million. This made Stephen King- sourced projects hot properties again, especially if they re remakes (like Pet Sematary, 4/5/2019), or otherwise related to a pre-existing horror classic. That otherwise leads us to Doctor Sleep, the 2013 novel by King that serves as a sequel to The Shining because it focuses on the adult Danny Torrance. That role went to Ewan McGregor, with King himself reportedly having given his blessing to the choice for the sequel, which will be directed by Mike Flanagan (Ouija: Origin of Evil, Gerald s Game). Also in June, we learned that Universal Pictures is remaking Stephen King s Firestarter, with the directing job going to Turkish-German director Fatih Akin (Goodbye Berlin, Soul Kitchen), with Blumhouse also co-producing. Finally, there s IT: Chapter Two (9/6/19), and this week, we saw our first images from the set. 2018 was a big year for IT: Chapter Two (9/6/2019) casting news, including the confirmation of Jessica Chastain in February, and the news in April that James McAvoy (Split, X-Men: First Class) and Saturday Night Live alumnus Bill Hader had been cast in lead roles (as Bill and Richie, respectively).JULY: STAR-STUDDED LITTLE WOMEN REMAKE TO BE GRETA GERWIG S NEXT(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)One of the biggest stories coming out of last year s awards season was the underdog success of actress-turned-director Greta Gerwig s semi-autobiographical Lady Bird (Certified Fresh at 99%) starring Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet (whose Call Me By Your Name also did well). For her next film, Gerwig is turning to classic literature, in the form of Little Women. Gerwig also attracted some major star power for her version, including Ronan and Chalamet, as well as Meryl Streep. Emma Stone was initially cast as Meg, but dropped out to allow her time to promote The Favourite, so the role went to another Emma, Emma Watson. In August, Jurassic Park and Blue Velvet star Laura Dern also signed on. Little Women is now scheduled for release in just under a year, on Christmas Day, 2019 (up against Call of the Wild, the World War I drama 1917, and Melissa McCarthy s Super Intelligence).AUGUST: SHHH . JOHN KRASINSKI IS NOW WRITING A QUIET PLACE 2 FOR 2020(Photo by Jonny Cournoyer/Paramount)In late August, Paramount Pictures announced A Quiet Place 2 (title pending) for release on May 15, 2020, which currently puts it up against Warner Bros Scooby reboot and a week before another monster movie, Godzilla vs Kong (also from Warner Bros). Almost immediately, it was clear that Paramount was going to want to return to the first film s premise (about monsters that are super sensitive to sound), given that it made over 2 million from a million budget. John Krasinski gave an update in October, stating that after initially telling Paramount to hire someone else, he is now actively working on writing the sequel. It s not yet known if Krasinski and his wife Emily Blunt will also be returning to star in the sequel. Emily Blunt is following up Mary Poppins Returns with another film for Disney, their attraction adaptation Jungle Cruise, which is scheduled for release on July 24, 2020.SEPTEMBER: HENRY CAVILL LIKELY OUT AS SUPERMAN, SIGNALING BIG DCEU CHANGES(Photo by Clay Enos/Warner Bros.)The DCEU (DC Extended Universe) hit a major snag in September with the news that Henry Cavill is most likely done playing Superman. Instead, the focus in the Superman Family will be on his cousin, Supergirl, whom we learned in August is getting her own movie. The talks with Cavill reportedly broke down over a Superman cameo in next year s Shazam! (4/5/2019). Warner Bros. upcoming DC Comics projects also include Joaquin Phoenix s Joker (10/4/2019), Margot Robbie s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) (2/7/2020), and Gal Gadot s Wonder Woman 1984 (6/5/2020). Many pieces went online speculating about the future of DC Comics movies. Even without Superman on his slate anymore, Henry Cavill is expected to be keeping very busy anyway, as he also signed with Netflix this year to star in their video game adaptation series The Witcher.OCTOBER: JAMES GUNN SWITCHES SIDES FOR DC COMICS SUICIDE SQUAD SEQUEL(Photo by Marvel Studios)One of the most shocking stories in recent memory came in July when Disney fired director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 over a number of questionable tweets from before his original hiring for 2014 s Guardians of the Galaxy. In October, we learned that that Gunn is now signed to write, and possibly direct the sequel to DC Comics Suicide Squad. Gunn is supposedly working on a completely new take, which suggests it could even be a reboot instead of a true sequel to the first film. One reason to believe that is that, in the past, Gunn has tweeted negatively about Jared Leto, suggesting that he may not be in a hurry to recast Leto as Joker in James Gunn s Suicide Squad.NOVEMBER: GUILLERMO DEL TORO REVEALS OVER 15 BIG MOVIES READY TO GO(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Long before Guillermo del Toro won the Academy Award for Best Picture this year for The Shape of Water, it was well known that he had a long list of shelved movies in his past. That little golden man on his mantle has changed a lot for GDT, including his new deal at Fox Searchlight that basically set him up with his own mini-studio for horror/genre films. In November, del Toro took to Twitter to list over 15 unproduced screenplays that he has completely finished, which are basically ready to go projects for any studio that wants to work with him to get them produced. (You can read a summary of that list in our coverage last month right here.) Del Toro also made the news in August for producing Scary Movies to Tell in the Dark, and in October for landing his Pinocchio at Netflix.DECEMBER: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE SUCCESS INSPIRES SPINOFFS AND SEQUELS (Photo by Sony Pictures Animation)After just two weeks in release, Sony s innovative animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Certified Fresh at 97%) has already earned nearly 0 million globally. The film was always part of Sony s ambitious plans for its Marvel properties, and last week, we leaned a lot more about possible future films. Development had already reportedly begun in November on both a sequel and a spinoff of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The animated sequel will focus on the romance between Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, which will then lead into the spinoff Spider-Women, featuring Gwen, Silk, and the original Spider-Woman (in the comics), Jessica Drew. These two animated films join a growing slate of Marvel movies at Sony that also includes Venom 2, Morbius (AKA The Living Vampire), Black Cat, Silver Sable, Kraven the Hunter, Jackpot, Nightwatch, and Silk.
ers. The pandemic matters. While we can probably expect another strongly-worded “I told you so” from the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) this week, the numbers do not lie. Streaming or not, since the end of June, when F9 opened, only two films have grossed more than 2.5 times its opening weekend: The Boss Baby: Family Business (3.42x), which was also streaming for free on Peacock, and The Forever Purge (3.47x), which was exclusively in theaters. Here is a breakdown of the rest.THEATER EXCLUSIVEF9 (2.43 / 7 weeks)Old (2.27 / 3 weeks)Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (1.94 / 3 weeks)Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2.51 / 4 weeks)The Green Knight (1.77 / 2 weeks)Stillwater (1.92 / 2 weeks)DISNEY PREMIER ACCESSBlack Widow (2.16 / 5 weeks)Jungle Cruise (1.86 / 2 weeks)HBO MAX (SINCE GODZILLA VS. KONG)Mortal Kombat (1.81)Those Who Wish Me Dead (2.59)The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2.70)In the Heights (2.58)Space Jam: A New Legacy (2.08 / 4 weeks)But let’s not let the HBO Max decision off the hook either. Repeat business seems to be at a stand still until we get a true all-clear on COVID and Delta, and streaming only doubles down on that. So the opening weekend is more crucial than ever before. The Suicide Squad is just the seventh film during this time to start with over million, joining HBO Max compatriots Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy. The former stretched its legs through a still-wide open marketplace while vaccine hope was at its peak; the latter dropped like a stone and may end up with the worst multiple for a family film this year.We could just drop all the variables and statistics and know that in our hearts, Gunn’s film goes nowhere south of million in normal times. And that is as conservative as it gets. The top “R”-rated opening in August is still Straight Outta Compton, with .2 million, so it s hard to even suggest that a high-profile DC film whose almost universally-maligned “PG-13” effort is the highest opening weekend ever in August with 3.68 million wouldn t make million or more. Not when both Deadpools opened to over 5 million, Joker to over million, and Logan with .4 million. The only thing we know for sure is that this year, in our current circumstances, The Suicide Squad will not be joining the 0 million club and the odds are very much in favor that nothing from the rest of Warner Brothers lineup for 2021 will be invited in either. The Top Ten And Beyond: Jungle Cruise Sailing Towards 0 Million Last week’s no. 1 film is showing some potential to eventually join the 0 million club. Jungle Cruise fell 55% to .7 million this weekend. In this environment that actually constitutes a victory given that it is the lowest drop for a no. 1 film in its second weekend since Spiral fell 47.5% from a meager start of .7 million. That puts Jungle’s 10-day toll at million, which is ahead of Godzilla vs. Kong’s .05 million at 10 days, though with that film’s Wednesday opening it only had four weekend days to accumulate that total compared to Jungle’s six. Nevertheless, it is still a better second weekend than GvK’s .88 million, so we’ll give Jungle Cruise a puncher’s chance of breaking that ceiling.M. Night Shyamalan’s Old fell back just a single spot for the third straight week. It is right in line with The Forever Purge’s third weekend of .1 million. Overall, it is still ahead of that film’s pace by almost million, so look for Old’s final tally to be in the range of million, just getting over Lady in the Water’s total and avoiding being the lowest-grossing film of Shyamalan’s post-Sixth Sense career. Black Widow dropped to fourth place with million, which is the third-best fifth weekend this year behind A Quiet Place Part II (.19 million) and F9 (.82 million). Still, it did pass F9 this week and now certainly has a lock to claim the crown of summer champion, not to mention fairly decent odds to compete for the highest-grossing film of the year, with possibly No Time to Die and Spider-Man: No Way Home as its biggest challengers.(Photo by © A24)Amongst last weekend’s adult entries, Stillwater dropped 45% to .86 million and stands total at million. It looks like Focus Features, which has put every one of its 13 films into theaters since Kajillionaire last September, is going to have its highest-grossing film of the pandemic – but just its second to pass million and one which is unlikely to hit million. The Green Knight is just A24’s third theatrical release during this time and their numbers have actually gone up. From Oscar nominee Minari (.1 million) to Zola (.1 million) and now to David Lowery’s film (the first in the company s history to start in third place), which has earned million so far.On The Vine: A Background Player and the Queen of SoulThings get a little more crowded in theaters next week. Delayed multiple times since last year, audiences can finally see Ryan Reynolds as a video game character trying to escape in Free Guy (which critics are digging). More folks are trying to rob Stephen Lang’s abusive blind guy in Don’t Breathe 2, and Jennifer Hudson takes on the role of Aretha Franklin in the biopic, Respect. All three films will be exclusive to theaters.Full List of Box Office Results: August 6-8, 2021
亚博电子游戏 (Photo by DreamWorks)Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are currently two of the absolute biggest properties out there, so it might be easy to forget how much of a niche market sci-fi and comic-book fans in general would have represented just 20 years ago. Before San Diego Comic-Con became a huge phenomenon garnering coverage from pretty much every news outlet around, genre fans were often ostracized and mocked by mainstream media. Everything changed on Christmas Day of 1999, though, when we got an adventure-comedy that was not only a love letter to sci-fi shows like Star Trek, but also one of the first movies to embrace fan culture as something positive.Galaxy Quest has a simple premise: what if aliens watched a sci-fi TV show from Earth and, believing it was real, asked the stars of the show for help in defeating an alien general? The film overcame production issues, including a change in directors from Harold Ramis to one who had barely done any feature films – and certainly no sci-fi movies – to become a cult hit that remains beloved decades later. It was even voted as one of the best Star Trek films by fans (higher than Star Trek Into Darkness). For it’s 20th anniversary, let’s walk in the suns of Warvan and explore why the film that got us to never give up and never surrender still endures to this day.It Nails the Fan Convention Atmosphere(Photo by DreamWorks)Back in the ‘90s, pop culture conventions were niche events, not at all like the juggernauts akin to San Diego Comic-Con. When Galaxy Quest begins, we meet a group of washed-up actors from the eponymous fictional sci-fi TV series at one such convention. The vast majority of the fans are dressed up in cheap costumes based on their favorite characters, and they’re being amped up by a moderator who appeared in one episode (played by Sam Rockwell). When the actors finally show up, it’s a sight that will be familiar to anyone who’s ever attended a similar event. The main actor in Galaxy Quest, Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen, arguably at the peak of his career), thinks too highly of himself, arriving late and soaking in all the attention from the fans while overshadowing his former co-workers. He occupies an entire table himself to sign autographs, while the rest of the cast are forced to share a smaller one. Alexander Dane (the late, great Alan Rickman), another actor on the show, has become absolutely fed up with making convention appearances and dealing with fan after fan coming up to him and repeating his famous catchphrase – to be fair, he did play Richard III.Galaxy Quest depicts not only the absurdity and the pettiness of it all, but also the love that goes into attending these fan conventions. It also predicted the rise of these conventions in ways no one could have foreseen back in 1999. The film, clearly inspired by Star Trek and its loyal fanbase, came at a time when these types of events drew just a few thousand fans. Now, similar events have become so big that they now encapsulate the entirety of pop-culture, and the biggest one, the aforementioned San Diego Comic-Con, draws in over 100,000 fans annually, with major studios dropping big announcements and news outlets reporting on them.It s a Legitimately Good Sci-Fi MovieOne of the reasons Galaxy Quest remains as beloved as it is today is that, unlike many parodies and spoofs, it still makes the effort to be a good sci-fi movie in and of itself. After Harold Ramis left the project, a relatively unknown director named Dean Parisot signed on, and he made sure that the film looked better than just a cheap knock-off of old Star Trek episodes, which is what the original plan called for. In the newly released documentary Never Surrender, producer Mark Johnson says that Parisot directed the film as a drama, focusing on the characters and elevating the movie from operating merely as an extended joke. That feeling of legitimacy comes from the fact that the technical aspects of the film make it look as good as most sci-fi movies from the time. Where Spaceballs and other parodies used their lower budget to make fun of the movies they’re parodying via cheaper recreations, Galaxy Quest aims to look as good as if not better than some of the Star Trek movies themselves. The special effects were created by Industrial Light and Magic, who had plenty of experience with the Star Trek franchise, and production designer Linda DeScenna, who did set decoration for the first Star Trek movie, also did the set decorations for Galaxy Quest.Never Surrender offers the impression that there were some differences of opinion on how “cheesy” the movie should ultimately be, but the end result erred on the side of realism in order to properly sell the drama of the characters. The creature effects were even created by Stan Winston, known for his work on The Thing, Jurassic Park, Aliens and more. Winston and his team meticulously recreated both the cheap effects that would be appropriate for the show-within-the-movie, like the headpiece worn by Alan Rickman’s character, and the look of the “real” aliens, who might feel right at home in the bigger-budget Star Wars or Star Trek movies. What makes Galaxy Quest special is that the movie is more than a parody, it s an homage. It s not funny at the expense of Star Trek and other sci-fi shows, and it doesn’t turn the staples of the genre into dick jokes like Spaceballs does. Instead, the film plays out as commentary, and it s funny because everyone who worked on the movie loved and understood the genre and knew what elements were worth poking a bit of fun at, and what elements needed to be played completely straight. It Pays Respect to Obsessive FansArguably the main reason why Galaxy Quest became such a hit with fans is the way the movie approaches fandom. This is a movie that came out well before the mainstreaming of geek culture and Comic-Con, before Game of Thrones and superheroes became part of the day-to-day conversation. In other words, the nerds and sci-fi fans of 1999 were more accustomed to being portrayed as basement-dwelling, D D-playing social misfits.Galaxy Quest‘s treatment of this niche culture is best represented by Brandon (Justin Long), a trivia-obsessed fan who uses his knowledge of the show to guide Nesmith and his crew through a replica of the spaceship and save their lives. The movie doesn’t ostracize fans or treat their obsessive cataloguing of pointless details as a waste of time. On the contrary, it treats fan obsession as an asset, which was innovative and way ahead of its time. The movie also depicts how fans can at times mistake fiction for reality. We learn that the Thermians, the aliens who have come to ask Nesmith and his fellow actors for help, have based their entire culture around the TV show, which they consider to be historical documents. Their enthusiasm at watching Nesmith step into the bridge is infectious, and they try to emulate the virtues of the characters in the show, while being completely blind to the many, many flaws of the extremely human people behind the costumes. By the end, their enthusiasm even manages to make the actors themselves embrace the heroic values their characters represent. Nesmith has been so immersed in the success his role had afforded him that he had never considered the positive effect it had on others, how he actually inspired them to do good, until the moment he becomes an actual hero – all thanks to some alien fans.It Predicted the Power of Fan Culture(Photo by DreamWorks)After the actors save the Thermians and return to Earth, they are greeted by a wave of enthusiastic fans at the convention, who cheer at the sight of a literal spaceship crashing into the convention center. The ending of the film reveals that Galaxy Quest the TV show subsequently enjoyed a new wave of popularity that resulted in a revival series, thanks to the fans.In this way, Galaxy Quest was again ahead of its time, as it came out before studios and networks realized the power of fans, but predicted that fans would be able to bring a beloved show back from the dead. It came out a mere three years before the Fox series Firefly, which was cancelled in 2003 after just one season and eventually saw a feature film continuation in 2005 after fans campaigned to bring it back.Though only 20 years old, Galaxy Quest feels like the beginning of a new era for nerd culture. It coincided with the release of Star Wars: Episode I and the rise of blogs and sites that generated online debate. It foresaw the release of major geek-friendly film franchises that weren t merely cult favorites but bona fide blockbusters, like X-Men, Spider-Man, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. Fan conventions became gathering places for hundreds of thousands of like-minded individuals to camp out for days on end in order to catch a glimpse of their favorite pop-culture stars or a trailer for the new movie in their favorite franchise. Fans now not only drive the box office, but they manage to revive their favorite franchises much faster than they used to – just look at the near-instant renewal of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.Galaxy Quest may not be widely regarded as a key player in the rise of geek culture and fandom, but it should be; its influence can be seen in everything from the 2009 Star Trek reboot to Marvel s Guardians of the Galaxy movies. If there’s one thing this cult classic has taught us, it is to never give up, and never surrender.Galaxy Quest was released on December 25, 1999.

Season 2 of The Kominsky Method has the reunion Michael Douglas fans have been waiting for. Kathleen Turner guest stars as Sandy Kominsky s (Douglas) ex-wife. The actors co-starred in Romancing the Stone, The Jewel of the Nile, and The War of the Roses.Unfortunately, their Kominsky Method scene occurs over the phone. They do not share screen time.“I’m hoping, if we go to a third year, that we will see more of her,” Douglas said. “That was so much fun, because obviously, the phone conversation, you both are entirely separate. So I did my whole thing without her being there. But then, because we worked together so much, when she heard my end of the conversation, she just settled right in and did a great job.”Jane Seymour joins the cast of season 2
