As we get ready to join Buzz, Woody, Bo Peep (!), and the gang for another adventure, we sat down with the cast to talk about the best moments of the series, the joy of new character Forky, and why Toy Story 4 was worth making – even after the near-perfect ending of the last film. As far as the blood and gore, we decided to take it to Monty Python levels. Co-creator Jordan Blum said that the notoriously protective Marvel allowed them to push the characters as far as they wanted to go because they knew the show we were trying to make and they encouraged it. Although the character of M.O.D.O.K. isn t as well-known as other superheroes and supervillains, he s instantly recognizable for comic fans, said Blum. It s a fan-favorite character, like Howard the Duck or other lesser-known heroes.As a company, Marvel loves how weird and kind of out there their characters get, said Oswalt. They do have this amazing roster of characters, so the fact that we re starting on the outer limits and then building beyond that, I think they re really excited. When you come up with something horrible in your head and put it on television, and then hear something like it happening in the real world, it s just sickening. But the terror of life in Gilead, the theocratic dictatorship that has taken over much of the U.S. in The Handmaid s Tale s fictional world, isn t all parallels to the current political reality. The fourth season, which premieres April 28 — nearly two years after the third season ended, thanks to its pandemic production delay — will see what happened in the aftermath of heroine June (Elisabeth Moss) and her allies sending dozens of children to safety in Canada. Can Sam and Bucky rise to the challenge against a mysterious new foe, while also reconciling with their own pasts in order to see where they fit in a post-Endgame world without Captain America? We don t need any explanation for Sam s grief, doubt, and disappointment when we watch the actor in those moments. Proma Khosla, MashableBetween the jaw-clenched brooding and reflective staring, Mackie and Stan find small but meaningful moments to illustrate their innate charms. Mackie’s smile has a natural glow that’s impossible to resist, and he gets to crack it a few times while “Uncle Sam” (yup) jokes with his young nephews or cajoles his sister into a new business plan. Stan, meanwhile, has this simple little moment with a Maneki-neko that’s destined for meme glory (while still conveying Bucky’s deep desire for the world to stop moving, just for a second, so he can catch up). Once these two get together, making enough time for fans to enjoy their natural charisma among the requisite action scenes may be the show’s greatest challenge. The Falcon and Winter Soldier gives viewers more time to see Bucky attempt his rehabilitation tour. Some of the camera angles she utilizes throughout the first episode feel so intimate, it’s almost like you’re inside the characters’ heads, a trick that works especially well in Bucky’s therapy scene. The premiere does feel familiar — staying true to the tone set by the Russo Brothers in The Winter Soldier and Civil War — but under her direction, everything feels oddly fresh and exciting at the same time. Streaming or not, since the end of June, when F9 opened, only two films have grossed more than 2.5 times its opening weekend: The Boss Baby: Family Business (3.42x), which was also streaming for free on Peacock, and The Forever Purge (3.47x), which was exclusively in theaters. The Suicide Squad is just the seventh film during this time to start with over million, joining HBO Max compatriots Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy. The former stretched its legs through a still-wide open marketplace while vaccine hope was at its peak; the latter dropped like a stone and may end up with the worst multiple for a family film this year.We could just drop all the variables and statistics and know that in our hearts, Gunn’s film goes nowhere south of million in normal times. And that is as conservative as it gets. The top “R”-rated opening in August is still Straight Outta Compton, with .2 million, so it s hard to even suggest that a high-profile DC film whose almost universally-maligned “PG-13” effort is the highest opening weekend ever in August with 3.68 million wouldn t make million or more. Jungle Cruise fell 55% to .7 million this weekend. In this environment that actually constitutes a victory given that it is the lowest drop for a no. 1 film in its second weekend since Spiral fell 47.5% from a meager start of .7 million. That puts Jungle’s 10-day toll at million, which is ahead of Godzilla vs. Kong’s .05 million at 10 days, though with that film’s Wednesday opening it only had four weekend days to accumulate that total compared to Jungle’s six. Nevertheless, it is still a better second weekend than GvK’s .88 million, so we’ll give Jungle Cruise a puncher’s chance of breaking that ceiling.M. Night Shyamalan’s Old fell back just a single spot for the third straight week. It is right in line with The Forever Purge’s third weekend of .1 million. Overall, it is still ahead of that film’s pace by almost million, so look for Old’s final tally to be in the range of million, just getting over Lady in the Water’s total and avoiding being the lowest-grossing film of Shyamalan’s post-Sixth Sense career. Black Widow dropped to fourth place with million, which is the third-best fifth weekend this year behind A Quiet Place Part II (.19 million) and F9 (.82 million). Delayed multiple times since last year, audiences can finally see Ryan Reynolds as a video game character trying to escape in Free Guy (which critics are digging). More folks are trying to rob Stephen Lang’s abusive blind guy in Don’t Breathe 2, and Jennifer Hudson takes on the role of Aretha Franklin in the biopic, Respect. At 40% on the Tomatometer, Godzilla: King of the Monsters didn t fare so well with critics, who largely felt the kaiju action in the film was spectacular but was too frequently sidelined in favor of a half-baked human story. Fans, on the other hand, felt quite differently, rewarding the giant monster battle royale with an 86% Audience Score. That s a far more impressive number than the 2014 reboot (66%), the Monsterverse follow-up Kong: Skull Island (69%), and even the recent Japan-produced Shin Godzilla (74%) all three of which, we might add, were also Certified Fresh according to the critics.In the wake of its box office-topping opening weekend, we decided to take a look through the user reviews for King of the Monsters to see if we could discover what the cause of this rift was, and the results were somewhat surprising. Generally speaking, while RT users tend to agree with critics about the film s shortcomings, the former are far more forgiving. At the end of the day, fans came to the movie to see Godzilla face off against or team up with some of the franchise s most iconic characters, and they got exactly what they wanted. To watch his growth through the titular Brockmire’s character arc in the first three seasons is simply great (and easily binge-able) comedic TV — and that’s not to mention the firecracker energy Amanda Peet brings as Azaria’s co-lead. Stars like Justina Machado and West Side Story Oscar winner Rita Moreno all returning to continue telling the story of three generations of a Cuban-American family as they live under the same roof. Why you should watch it: Few series today are as un-cornily heartwarming, funny, and timely as this long-in-the-making reboot. Each new season renewal, however, has come with a photo-finish, down-to-the-wire announcement, and when Netflix announced it was pulling the plug after season 3, fans corralled around it and it got saved by Pop (best known as the home of Schitt’s Creek). But despite his meek, follow-the-leader personality, Marty talks his way out of a death sentence when things go awry with his crime boss and moves his family — including wife Wendy (Laura Linney) — to the Ozarks to keep the dealings afloat and the family alive.Why you should watch it: Ozark isn’t the first series of its kind to portray good people doing bad things, but it’s about as good as those series come. The Emmy-winning series brings bleakness to the deceptive beauty of the Ozarks, and it establishes Bateman as so much more than the comedic actor most know him as today. Even more than just a vehicle for Bateman, however, it’s an ensemble drama (with an equally stellar Laura Linney and Julia Garner, no less) that tackles the power of wealth and greed, human nature, and the ties that bind within family and beyond. There’s a lot of excitement to be had with the release of Black Widow (out in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 9). For one, the title character, played by Scarlett Johansson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2010, finally has her own solo movie. Also, MCU fans finally get a new theatrical feature after two years of drought due to an unfortunate delay. And, finally, it’s also apparently pretty good and worth those two waits.The first crop of reviews for Black Widow, most of them positive, highlight additional things to be excited about specifically, from the performances by Johansson and Marvel newbie Florence Pugh to the relatively grounded action scenes and darker emotional themes for the franchise. It may not hit all of its targets, but it s goofy, earnest, action-packed, and hilarious, which feels pretty spot-on for a summer movie success.
