Both men were about to have arguably the biggest success of their careers in 1996 – Murphy with The Nutty Professor, Craven with Scream – but first they had to make a stop in Rottenville with the 1995 flick critics slammed as a not-funny, not-scary, totally misguided waste of both their talents. And no, Eddie wasn t wrong: the permed mane atop vampire Maximillian s head did not help matters one bit.Both director and star have given insights into what might have gone wrong over the years: Murphy was allegedly difficult to work with; Craven wasn t sure what kind of film he was making. But over those same years the movie has also earned something of a reputation as a cult classic. Not classic in the sense of being good per se, but classic in the sense of being a total romp with an under-appreciated sense of the bizarre, a killer score, and some serious chemistry between Murphy and Angela Bassett as an NYPD detective caught up in a bloodsucker s quest.Look closely, and there are glimmers of Craven s keen sense of the horror-comedy mix, and Murphy s natural-born charisma. Do you find it difficult to switch gears between something as large-scale as Avengers and something smaller and more intimate like All Creatures?Karen Gillan: No, not really. I think, ultimately, when it comes down to it, when the director shouts, Action, it s exactly the same job. It s just everything else surrounding it. On the Marvel movies, we re so taken care of, it s amazing. And then you go onto another movie, and there s no budget for that, but that s absolutely fine, It s not an issue; it certainly wasn t an issue for me or David [Dastmalchian], and we both work in Marvel movies.David is the guy who wrote it, and is also acting in it. It was just amazing. It didn t feel too much like shifting gears. It felt like the same job, different character, really.RT: You re from Scotland, but in this film, you re portraying a down-and-out woman from the American Midwest, which is a very specific thing. What was your preparation like for the role?Gillan: Well, I m always reading psychology essays anyway. That would be what my fun hobby is. [laughs] And so that is the kind of thing that I would do for this character. I also have a dialect coach that I really like working with, and we ll really nail down what the accent is. A huge part of what I love doing is doing different accents and voices. And then, I just went to Kansas City and kind of immersed myself in being there, and feeling what it s like in 100-degree heat, which, as a Scottish person, I don t function well in. I don t think I ve ever experienced that before. [laughs]And just spending time with David. He drove me around to all the spots where these two would go and we d talk, and he told me about his life growing up there. So it felt like an immersive experience, for sure. I ate a lot of fast food, which I was happy about, because we do that in Scotland.RT: You ve had quite a run these past several years. You ve been in a bunch of big hits and acclaimed smaller films, not to mention Doctor Who a few years ago. What is this secret power you have to recognize when a project is going to be a good one?Gillan: I mean, I think it s just deciding what I think is good and not. [laughs]RT: You just happen to be a little better at it than most people.Gillan: I don t know, maybe I ve just been really lucky with the people I ve gotten to work with. It s been a really exciting thing, because I feel like I got to be involved in some things where they were kind of new and exciting and we didn t exactly know how they were going to go over. It felt at the time when we did the first Guardians film, the tone was so new at that point for a Marvel movie that it was like, What is this? This is new. And then it became really exciting and kind of carved the way for the tone of the rest of the rest of the Marvel movies, I would say.Same with Jumanji, this feeling of, How is this going to go across? And then people really responded to it. It just feels incredibly lucky to get to work with the directors, because really, it s all down to them. They re steering the ship and calling all the shots. So, I don t know, maybe luck or just responding to things.RT: You ve directed a feature film already, and you mentioned that you re interested in possibly doing a horror film next. I take it you enjoyed that experience behind the camera.Gillan: It was incredible. I loved it. I ve loved filmmaking always, and I love acting so much, whether it s me doing it or I m watching another person do it really well, and I get to collaborate with them. I just love it, and I love the visuals of filmmaking. So to combine all of that just made me really, really happy. And yes, definitely have multiple directing projects in the pipeline, which is exciting. It has been just over a year since Jordan Peele made history winning the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his genre-bending horror film Get Out. He also made history with his nominations: Peele was the first African American to be nominated for Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay for a debut film. This awards season he returns to the Oscars stage as one of the producers of Spike Lee s critically acclaimed BlacKkKlansman, placing a bookend on a historic year for Black filmmakers. Kicked off by Black Panther’s box office dominance and culminating with Into the Spider-Verse s Miles Morales near-perfect debut, 2018 was a watershed moment for diverse filmmakers and stories. Though vastly different in tone, technique, and genre, each Black-led film added to the history and legacy of Black cinema, and expanded upon it. In honor of Black History Month, we re taking moment to celebrate some of the most historic moments from the last 12 months for Black filmmakers and performers. I completely rewrote the pilot, Graeme Manson told Rotten Tomatoes at the 2020 Television Critics Association winter tour. Jennifer and Daveed, their roles didn t change when I came on. But I shuffled cast all over the place and gave at least half the cast new roles. The task of helming the pilot s major fixes was handed off to Doctor Who and Penny Dreadful director James Hawes. His work with TNT and Manson seems to have been a fit, as he went on to direct two more of the season s episodes.THE SERIES WILL BE A PREQUEL, KIND OFInstead of taking place in the same time period as the movie — which was 15 years after humanity left the planet in ruins — the series story will happen just seven years after that watershed event. Showrunner Manson explained to the NYCC crowd that he wanted the loss of a habitable world to be more immediate and more visceral for each character on screen.The series sounds like it ll be inspired by the actual tone and world of the original Snowpiercer story. And this shouldn t be confused at all with the graphic novel prequel, Snowpiercer: Extinction, which takes place before the extinction event occurred.Graeme Manson explained to Rotten Tomatoes how his series takes inspiration from both the comics and the 2013 movie. I was a huge fan of director Bong s movie, Manson said. It totally blew me away. I really took that tone and that sense of being able to, in our sets, to just step into a place that you re like, how is this on a train? The new TV adaptation, Manson explained, is more thematic, and really, like the first graphic novel. The showrunner used the beginning of that first book as a big inspiration here, but according to Manson, some of the books bigger existential elements just wouldn t suit television as well. As much as he adores the original movie, Manson points out the challenge in telling a cohesive episodic story in the linear way Bong Joon-Ho did before him. It s like, start at the tail and go to the engine — it all moves one direction, even in the frame, Manson told Rotten Tomatoes. Obviously, we can t do that over the course of a series. So we really introduce the characters from around the train to create a character drama. WHAT DOES THE TRAILER TELL US?After the 2019 winter TCA panel for the series was canceled, leaving any and all promotional clips unseen, an official Snowpiercer trailer setting up up the show s bleak premise was finally revealed over the summer to the San Diego Comic-Con crowd.When he visited the annual pop culture event, Manson explained to EW that the series takes place seven years in the future when humanity, in our infinite wisdom, has attempted to cure climate change but has instead plunged the earth back into an Ice Age. So, the remnants of humanity have retreated into a giant, frozen, perpetual train that circles the earth, existentially, forever.”This concept is established in the footage, along with some fantastic looking visual effects and set pieces, which focus closely on Connelly s Melanie and Diggs s Layton.HOW MANY SEASONS WILL THE SHOW RUN?While audiences have been waiting quite a long time for Snowpiercer to premiere, the cast and crew have been hard at work bringing this thing to life. Graeme Manson told Rotten Tomatoes that the cast and crew were already halfway through production on the show s second season. This little factoid made us wonder how many seasons he hopes the show will last. I always, kind of, put it at three and three seems like a number that can then expand to five, Manson explained. Three seems like a beginning, middle, and an end. Five then seems like five acts. IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF A SNOWPIERCER TV UNIVERSE?To sum up, there s the Snowpiercer story that s in graphic novel form, Bong Joon-Ho s 2013 movie and now this new series coming to TNT. Whether the series lasts three seasons or five, Graeme Manson revealed to Rotten Tomatoes that there could be other Snowpiercer trains, and new stories to be told. The cool thing about Snowpiercer, too, is like, someone else can do another train, Manson continued. I think that s what Jean-Marc Rochette, one of the artists of the books, said. There are as many Snowpiercer stories as there are trains you can imagine. Netflix bought the international streaming rights to the series, ensuring its global reach to audiences outside of the U.S. and China, positioning the program for success.After years of waiting, it was announced during the program s panel at the 2020 Television Critics Association winter tour that Snowpiercer will premiere to TNT on May 31 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: When you were talking about where to place the camera, I thought, that s a good segue into asking about Oxygen because you have a single location here, and it s a tight location. In Crawl, at least you had the whole area under the house, right? Here you have just this tight pod that s essentially as big as Melanie. What was the greatest challenge of shooting in what appears to be a tiny space – and keeping things interesting for the audience?Alexandre Aja: So I think the biggest challenge was obvious, because it was a very small cryo unit, almost like the size of a coffin. We took that challenge and we turned it into, I think, an advantage. I realized early on in the script that I had an obvious continuity of locations in that pod and I had a continuity of character with her, with Melanie, who was in every single shot and was so fun to direct, and who is carrying the emotion. So I thought about this as, okay, I m going to in fact do something that I never even think about doing in other movies. I m going to list down on a piece of paper all the different styles of directing, styles of framing, styles of effects, of types of lenses, of types of gadgets In fact, that kind of continuity with her and the location gave me the opportunity of going completely in different places scene after scene. So I avoid repeating myself and, most important, ensure that the audience doesn t get bored of the same location. Also, not only to avoid repeating myself, but also trying to underline in better ways every single emotion. I think in another movie, if you do that, it becomes like a very bad taste or bad style, because you will just get out of the experience and you stop watching because you will see the camera movement every time. But because we had that perfect storytelling inside the box, I don t think that you feel it. Then the camera becomes more like something that comes to underline every feeling or every new obstacle or nightmare that she s going through.(Photo by Shanna Besson, © Netflix)RT: It s interesting too that you mention Spielberg and Kubrick in your film selections, because watching this, just design-wise and also in some of the framing, I couldn t help thinking of the Precogs in Minority Report and the tentacle things in War of the Worlds. And then obviously there s the voice of HAL 9000. Were they direct influences on you?Aja: I love science-fiction, and grew up reading a lot. I still read a lot of science-fiction, I m watching a lot of science-fiction. I unfortunately didn t have the opportunity until this movie to work on a science-fiction movie. I did develop many of them that either didn t get made or will get made at some point – I hope. But yes, all the references that you were talking about, they all were in my mind. Of course, when you read a script and you have an AI talking, and it s going to be a really important one, you cannot help but think about HAL 9000. And the same with Minority Report. I would say Philip K. Dick in general. There is not a real link between Oxygen and Philip K. Dick. But it was really in mind as I was doing it for a strange reason. But yes, I definitely love sci-fi. I think sci-fi at its best has a mission to think about the world we re living in and what our position is within it and what we re supposed to be doing or not. There is a very big cautionary tale aspect of sci-fi. I think it s one of the things that really got me in and interested in the script when I read it the first time.RT: Just finally, you mentioned sci-fi as a genre you love, but I think I fell in love with your work, and many others did, with your sort of hardcore slasher material like High Tension and The Hills Have Eyes. I loved Piranha 3D as well. I m wondering: will you return to that genre? I think a lot of fans would love to see a really terrorizing horror film from you at some point in the future.Aja: I have them. I have a lot of them! With the traffic jam created by the pandemic, suddenly I have no idea which one is going to get done first. I still love the more extreme survival experience as well. I have a couple [of those films] that I m developing that I really want to make. Going back to Alien – Alien is the perfect mix between very smart and sophisticated sci-fi, and is a very brutal film as well.Oxygen is available on Netflix from May 12, 2021.

Ruffin is executive producing the series along with Meyers, Mike Shoemaker, and fellow Late Night writer and frequent on-screen commentator, Jenny Hagel.Ruffin told journalists attending the show’s all-virtual Television Critics Association summer press tour that “the show will be a half-hour, late-night show and it ll mostly feel like a late-night show except there will never be a guest. Well, as of now, we will not have guests. You never know who’s gonna stop by. New York’s a big city. But I guess we will write as much as we can all week and then the four things we like the most, that’s what we ll do.”But fans of Late Night who have come to enjoy Ruffin (and Hagel’s) commentary in segments like “Jokes Seth Can’t Tell” should not worry, as she will still be involved with that show.Peacock s other new after-hours series involves bringing back a late-night veteran: Larry Wilmore. The Daily Show and Nightly Show alum will host a still-untitled weekly series that the press release promises will see him having “real discussions with high profile people from all different backgrounds including sports, politics and entertainment.”“The show is basically about where we re going to have that kind of ‘conversation’ that we ve been saying that we want to have,” Wilmore told journalists attending his virtual panel. “So we re going to have some interesting people in the show, and we re also going to cover the election. I felt like I got cheated the last time during the last election [because The Nightly Show’s last episode aired August 18, 2016].
