亚博体彩的网址采用百度引擎1(Baidu 4)This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles like Avatar 2, Insidious 5, and new roles for Dave Bautista and Jennifer Lopez. This WEEK S TOP STORYJORDAN PEELE PRODUCING PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS REMAKE (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)One popular sentiment about remakes is that they re more acceptable when the first attempt can clearly be improved upon. In 1991, Wes Craven (in his post-Nightmare on Elm Street, pre-Scream years) directed a creepy movie called The People Under the Stairs (Fresh at 66%), which has its fans, but is hardly remembered as a classic of the genre. One producer who appears to think it would be a worthy candidate for a quality remake is Get Out and Us director Jordan Peele, who is teaming up with Universal Pictures for exactly that. Perhaps not coincidentally, this Sunday also happens to mark the 29th anniversary of the original film s release on November 1, 1991. Another horror remake that Jordan Peele is producing, Candyman, is still awaiting its COVID-19-delayed release date, which is currently tentatively re-scheduled for August 27, 2021, 14 months after its original release date in June.Other Top Headlines1. INSIDIOUS STAR PATRICK WILSON TO MAKE DIRECTORIAL DEBUT WITH FIFTH INSTALLMENT(Photo by ©FilmDistrict courtesy Everett Collection)One common concern for fans of long-running horror franchises is how long their stars will stick around. Insidious may not have been named the scariest movie ever recently like Sinister was (or even The Exorcist, according to our own poll), but the four movies to date have brought in over half a billion dollars worldwide. Insidious star Patrick Wilson will not only be returning for a fifth installment, but he ll also be making his directorial debut with the Blumhouse sequel. Set 10 years after the original Insidious, the central family will now dealing with a big change, as Ty Simpkins character is now going off to college. About taking on the film, Wilson said, I’m honored and thrilled to be at the helm of the next Insidious installment, which will provide an amazing chance to unpack everything the Lamberts went through a decade ago, as well as deal with the consequences of their choices. Although she wasn t mentioned in this week s news, it s presumed that Rose Byrne will also be returning, and Lin Shaye has been in every Insidious film, so she s probably likely to come back as well. In related news, Blumhouse is also teaming up with writer and director John Ridley (writer of 12 Years a Slave, Three Kings) for an untitled project based on an arcticle titled Project Poltergeist, a nonfiction story about a young boy who may have experienced paranormal phenomena in New Jersey housing projects during the 1960s.2. CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND s RACHEL BLOOM TO WRITE *NSYNC SUPERFANS MOVIE (Photo by Scott Everett White/©The CW)After airing on The CW for four seasons, the musical comedy series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (Fresh at 98%) came to end in 2019, but its star and co-creator Rachel Bloom is now getting ready for her next project, and it also has a musical theme. Bloom has signed with Sony Pictures to write a movie about two *NSYNC superfans, based on an idea from *NSYNC member Lance Bass, who s also producing the untitled movie. The movie will be inspired by the true stories of fans Meredith Sandberg and Winter Byington (as described in this Washington Post article titled N Sync or Bust! ) , who spent a summer following the group during their last world tour. Rachel Bloom said about the project, I’m so excited to work on this road trip musical that will explore the nature of early 2000s nostalgia and if the past was, indeed, actually better. Also, I GET TO WORK WITH LANCE BASS! The capital letters were all Bloom s. It s not yet known for sure if Rachel Bloom will also appear in the film (or maybe direct?), or if she s just writing the screenplay.3. FATHER-DAUGHTER DUO ETHAN AND MAYA HAWKE TO STAR IN BEATLEMANIA ROM-COM (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)For many fans of Ethan Hawke, there may have been a gasp! moment while watching season 3 of Stranger Things, as people realized that the new character Robin was played by Maya Hawke, A.K.A. the daughter of Hawke and Uma Thurman. For her next project, the two Hawkes will be teaming up for a romantic comedy set during the glory days of 1960s Beatlemania called Revolver (as in the title of The Beatles seventh studio album), and the beginning of the band s shift towards more psychedelic sounds.  Maya Hawke will play a Beatlemaniac in Alaska who comes up with a plan to give her virginity to shy Beatles guitarist George Harrison when the band unexpectedly had to land there on June 27, 1966 (which did indeed happen). Revolver will be directed by Andrew Stanton, a long-time Pixar collaborator whose credits include Finding Nemo (Certified Fresh at 99%), WALL-E (Certified Fresh at 95%), Finding Dory (Certified Fresh at 94%), and on the live-action front, John Carter (Rotten at 52%). The press release didn t say for sure whether Ethan Hawke will be playing Maya s dad, but that s probably most likely.4. KATE WINSLET REVEALS HER CRAZY AVATAR 2 UNDERWATER RIG (Photo by Twitter: @officialavatar)Due to various delays (but most obviously and most recently COVID-19), we re still over two years away from the December 16, 2022 release date of James Cameron s sequel Avatar 2 (12/16/2022), which will come out 13 years after the first film. It s worth remembering that two years before Avatar came out, movie fans did know he was working on a movie called Avatar, but we didn t yet know that half the cast would be giant blue deer-people aliens. In that respect, the new set image showing off Kate Winslet filming a scene underwater is ripe for fan speculation. In the image, we can see Winslet wearing something like a cape that extends out past her arms via sticks, which, to this writer, make it look like she will be playing something like an alien stingray creature. Winslet has already spoken out this week about filming those scenes for Avatar 2, saying that she learned to hold her breath for up to seven minutes (for reference, the world record is 24 minutes). Winslet s other Avatar 2 co-stars will include Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, and returning cast members from the first movie like Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver.5. TAIKA WAITITI PRODUCING NATIVE AMERICAN DRAMA FRYBREAD FACE AND ME (Photo by Jasin Boland/©Marvel)In addition to his own films (from Jojo Rabbit to Marvel movies like Thor: Love and Thunder), writer, director, and producer Taika Waititi also made the news this past summer for signing three Maori writers to tell stories of the indigenous peoples of New Zealand. This week, Waititi widened his support of indigenous filmmakers to include Native Americans with a deal to executive produce a drama called Frybread Face and Me (frybread being a staple food for many Native Americans). Written and directed by Native American filmmaker Billy Luther (who is of Navajo, Hopi, and Laguna Pueblo heritage), Frybread Face and Me will tell the story of two adolescent Navajo cousins from different backgrounds who bond over the course of a summer herding sheep on their grandmother’s ranch in Arizona while learning more about their family’s past and themselves. Frybread Face and Me was also one of the projects selected for this year s Sundance Institute Directors and Screenwriters Labs.6. ARMIE HAMMER AND JENNIFER LOPEZ TO CO-STAR IN ACTION COMEDY SHOTGUN WEDDING(Photo by Priscilla Grant, RCF/Everett Collection)Next week, despite the challenges of COVID-19, the American Film Market will indeed take place, and as with most similar events (Sundance, Cannes, etc.), this week we heard about some of the projects that will be presented to investors at the event. Some actors are habitually popular at international film sales events like AFM, and this week, one such actor appeared to be Armie Hammer (The Social Network, The Lone Ranger), who is attached to star in two movies. Hammer and Jennifer Lopez will co-star in the Lionsgate action comedy Shotgun Wedding, about a destination wedding that goes terribly wrong when the entire wedding party is taken hostage. Hammer s other new project this week is the Cold War thriller The Billion Dollar Spy, co-starring Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), based on the true story of a Soviet engineer (Mikkelsen) and his CIA handler (Hammer), and the friendship that the two find together.7. THIS WEEK IN CELEBRITY BIOPICS: RICHARD PRYOR AND ANOTHER B.B. KING MOVIE (Photo by Everett Collection)Last week, this column reported on the news from Wendell Pierce (HBO s The Wire) that he is going to be playing famed blues guitarist B.B. King in a movie called The Thrill is On. This week, B.B. King s estate issued a public statement clarifying that there are actually two movies gearing up based on the life of B.B. King, as there will also be an official biopic (separate from The Thrill is On) expected to start filming in 2021. Instead of being a true biopic, The Thrill is On is now being described as a dramatized version of a real-life friendship story in the spirit of the film Round Midnight (or, more recently, perhaps Green Book). In related news, the long-in-development Richard Pryor biopic got a little closer to actually happening this week as black-ish creator Kenya Barris has signed on with MGM to make his feature film directorial debut based on a screenplay he will also write, following a heated film rights auction. 8. DON T EXPECT SHERLOCK HOLMES 3 OR THE SAINT ANYTIME SOON (Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)The continuing COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down the releases of dozens of movies, and in some cases, it has compelled studios to skip theaters entirely in favor of streaming debuts, like last week s Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm (Certified Fresh at 85%), which dropped on Amazon Prime. In some cases, however, COVID-19 is also causing films to be indefinitely delayed (or cancelled) altogether. This week, director Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman, Eddie the Eagle) revealed that two of the projects to which he was attached are now on indefinite hold because of the pandemic. Those films are the long-in-development sequel Sherlock Holmes 3 (starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law) and the reboot of the gentleman thief franchise The Saint (previously played on TV by Sir Roger Moore and on film by Val Kilmer). Fletcher said that both films are up against the same dilemma, the same issue that we all [have]: How do you get large groups of p

Top film The Vast of Night is in the former category, an enticing, 1950s-set alien broadcast mystery that makes the most out of just a few locations. At the opposite (read: expensive) end of the spectrum is Christopher Nolan s Tenet, which was originally touted as the savior of theaters, but will have to settle at being magnificent at confusing the hell out of viewers. Sci-fi saw some social commentary in The Platform and Save Yourselves!, and made the same amount of room for laughs in Bill Ted Face the Music and Psycho Goreman. And to prove once and for all 2020 was a crazy year, Gerard Butler was actually in a movie critics like: Greenland, his first Certified Fresh live-action movie since 2011 s Corolianus. The order of the rank below reflects the Adjusted Score as of February 28, 2021. In the lead up to Avengers: Endgame, we invited fans to take part in a mammoth survey to find out your favorite movies, characters, and moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – so far! Hundreds of Rotten Tomatoes fans took part, weighing in on their favorite Avengers, their favorite villains, their most heartbreaking Infinity War deaths, and which post-Endgame movie they re most excited to see. (Because it may be the endgame this week, but the MCU will go on). We dug deep into the data to spot some fun trends, seeing if there were divides along gender lines (ladies love M Baku, who d have thunk it!?) and generations (our Millennial/Non-Millennial split told us a bunch). Check out the results and major findings below, and let us know your own answers in the comments section.Captain America and Iron Man Tie for Favorite Avenger With 53%, While Ladies Love Thor(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)In one of our survey’s most unsurprising results, the two Avengers whose relationship underpins the entire MCU came out on top when we asked Who Is Your Favorite Avenger? Some 53% of fans cast votes for Tony Stark and Steve Rogers; Thor came in a close third with 50% of respondents naming him one of their favorites.Cap was the clear overall favorite when it came to younger fans: 64% of Millennials named him one of their favorites (compared with 55% for Iron Man). Female fans were slightly less into Steve, though, with 44% of female respondents saying he was a favorite, compared with 59% of males. For the ladies, it was all about the God of Thunder: Thor got the highest percentage of female votes, with 55% of female respondents designating the Asgardian one of their most beloved heroes.Spidey was surprisingly divisive, both between the sexes and among generations. While 46% of male fans called Peter Parker one of their favorite Avengers, just 29% of female fans did the same. Not surprisingly, the youngest Avenger has some serious Millennial appeal, getting 44% of Millennials to name him a fave, compared with 36% of Non-Millennials.The top nine favorites in our survey were all characters who have had standalone MCU films (Hulk, whose standalone film did not star Mark Ruffalo, came in last amongst those). The bottom eight have not had their own films, although one is on the way for Black Widow (ranked 10th), and Scarlet Witch, Vision, Bucky Barnes, and Falcon will all appear in limited series on Disney+.Here are the full results from the question, Who Is Your Favorite Avenger? (Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures )Who will win?Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%Who should win?Once Upon A Time is an audience (and office) favorite, but we’d love to see the HFPA honor one of the two socially conscious comedies in the category. Knives Out, Rian Johnson’s super critically lauded whodunit (97% on the Tomatometer), is so smartly constructed and well acted, it should rise above the “popcorn movie” label to awards contender. And Jojo Rabbit, while divisive, is also treasured by some as a one-of-a-kind blast of audaciousness; it’s also connected hard with fans, with a 95% Audience Score.Best Actress Motion Picture DramaWho will win?Renee Zellweger – Judy (2019) 82%Who should win?Renee Zellweger’s performance as Judy Garland has been hailed as electrifying ever since the Certified Fresh Judy premiered at Telluride, and we’re not going to argue: It’s a gutsy performance and an ideal comeback vehicle for the Oscar-winning Bridget Jones star whose own journey through Hollywood has shades of Garland s. She will and should win, though Charlize Theron, playing her own real-life-figure-with-some-press-issues in Bombshell, also stands a chance.Best Actor Motion Picture Drama(Photo by © Warner Bros.)Who will win?Joaquin Phoenix – Joker (2019) 68%Who should win? Experts are predicting Joaquin Phoenix will dance up the stairs, to the stage, and take out Best Actor – Drama for his deeply committed take on the Clown Prince of Crime. But, we simply can’t look past Adam Driver’s complete annihilation of the screen as one half of a crumbling relationship in Marriage Story for our pick in this category, closely followed by Antonio Banderas’s career-best work in Pedro Almadovar’s Pain and Glory, which nabbed him best actor honors at Cannes.Best Actress Motion Picture Musical or Comedy (Photo by Casi Moss, courtesy of A24)Who will win?Awkwafina – The Farewell (2019) 97%Who should win?The competition is tougher for actresses in the drama category, with most of the Oscar frontrunners parked there for the Golden Globes, leaving Comedy open to The Farewell’s Awkwafina. She’s more than deserving, but so is Emma Thompson, whose stellar work in Late Night – which lost some critical and awards steam in the space between its Sundance debut and mid-year release – we’d love to see recognized. Also, look out for Knives Out’s Ana de Armas, whose wide-eyed but savvier-than-she-seems Marta grounds the much-loved film.Best Actor Motion Picture Musical or Comedy Who will win?Taron Egerton – Rocketman (2019) 89%Who should win? The HFPA loves a Brit, and a rising star, and Taron Egerton gives one of those absolutely-everything performances in Rocketman that will have folks seeing him as more than simply Eggsy from now on. But… we have to go with Eddie Murphy’s career-best work – and what a freaking career! – in Dolemite Is My Name for our in-a-fair-world pick.Best Supporting Actress Motion Picture(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)Who will win?Jennifer Lopez – Hustlers (2019) 87%Who should win? Margot Robbie is completely transformed in Bombshell. Laura Dern out-Renatas herself in her fabulous Marriage Story turn. And Florence Pugh – who isn’t nominated, but should have been – gives us an Amy March for the ages in Little Women. But superstar and mogul J-Lo did more than just remind us she’s a talented actress in Hustlers, she lit up the screen unlike just about anyone else – man, woman, mad Titan – this year. A deserved win.Best Supporting Actor Motion Picture(Photo by © Columbia Pictures)Who will win?Brad Pitt – Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%Who should win? We could watch Brad do his thing for another three hours (shirt on or off) – he s that good. But for our money, Joe Pesci, back on screens after almost a decade, is just that little bit better in The Irishman. As Russell Bufalino, he s all quiet menace, and steals the show from under (the also excellent) Pacino and De Niro.Best Director Motion Picture(Photo by Dominique Charriau/WireImage)Who will win?Bong Joon-ho – Parasite (2019) 98%Who should win? The Bong Hive – that vocal group of online fans who ve embraced the director with the fervor of an early 2010s One Direction fan – will have reason to celebrate Sunday, and deservedly so. With Parasite, still at 99% on the Tomatometer, Bong Joon-ho did the near-impossible: created a stateside stir with a foreign film. Surprising, thrilling, hilarious – Parasite is not eligible for major film categories, and here is where it will get its justice. Unless, that is, the epicness of The Irishman or technical wizardry of 1917 dazzle the HFPA enough to cause an upset.Best Screenplay Motion PictureWho will win?Marriage Story (2019) 94%Who should win? Hard to argue with Noah Baumbach s deeply personal, beautifully observed, and very, well, wordy divorce tale taking home the prize. But we think Bong Joon-ho s bracing, inventive, and richly allegorical Parasite would be the (slightly) more deserving choice.

(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Theatergoers are buzzing about Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron s newest film, the relentlessly cool action thriller Alita: Battle Angel. The heavily stylized flick gathers an all-star cast, with Rosa Salazar as Alita and Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali, Jennifer Connelly, and Jackie Earle Haley filling important roles. Its frenetic action and unique female protagonist make it one of the most intriguing movies of the season so far, but there’s one thing about the film you may not have known: It was actually inspired by one of the most famous and influential cyberpunk manga series of all time: Yukito Kishiro’s Battle Angel Alita.Battle Angel Alita is a fantastic example of what manga can accomplish. The series made its Japanese debut in 1990, appearing in publisher Shueisha s Business Jump magazine and quickly amassing a ridiculous number of readers. The 9-volume post-apocalyptic manga series follows an amnesiac female cyborg found in suspended animation by a cybermedic expert, Daisuke Ido, in the trash. Ido painstakingly rebuilds her, and Alita s memories eventually return. She remembers the powerful martial art Panzer Kunst, but little else, and uses her abilities to become a mercenary known as a Hunter-Warrior. From there, she begins to recall memories of her previous life on Mars. The sprawling story explores her adventures in the dystopian manga world and themes of loneliness, isolation, and what it means to be human.(Photo by 20th Century Fox)While the series ended nearly a quarter of a century ago, its influence can still be felt throughout the countless properties that followed it. It s a hallmark of the cyberpunk genre thanks to its emotive characters, strong female lead, detailed artwork, and excellent writing. The live-action film does an impressive job of adapting the story for American audiences, though there’s still a lot more to learn about Alita and her world beyond what Cameron and Rodriguez were able to cover during the span of the film.Alita: Battle Angel is a mostly faithful retelling of Kishiro s original work, but there are a few changes that were introduced in its transition from page to screen. There s a difference in pacing, for instance, and slight alterations to the tale. The relationship between Alita and her love interest, Hugo, is decidedly less tragic than the manga depicted it, and Hugo is rendered a much more sympathetic character. But one of the strangest choices viewers may notice is that the film retains the manga s unusual, oversized eyes for Alita, played by the heavily CGed Salazar. Yes, anime and manga characters are typically known for their large and expressive eyes, but seeing them on a live-action actress is jarring. Cameron has indicated in interviews that he was intrigued by the challenge of making a photorealistic human character in CG, while Rodriguez explained further: The manga anime eyes that we ve seen since the 30s and Astro Boy has never been done photorealistically. So, usually when we see an anime translated, it doesn t feel like that.”(Photo by 20th Century Fox)The franchise as a whole has never been immune to change for Western audiences, though, since both its central character and title were altered before it was exposed to American readers. The series began life as Gunnm, and Alita’s original name was Gally. Why such drastic changes?According to a 1993 interview with Fred Burke, co-translator for Viz Media on Battle Angel Alita, the title was changed to cater to a wider audience: “For a Viz Comic to work, it’s got to appeal to more than just the hard-core manga and anime crowd, he explained. The original title, Gunnm (a portmanteau of Gun Dream), turned into the more descriptive Battle Angel Alita. As for Gally s new name, Burke noted that he found Alita in a book of baby names and assigned it to the protagonist, as it meant courage. It s easy to understand why Gunnm might be a difficult title for American readers to embrace, and Alita does have a nice ring to it, so the names stuck.Despite its legacy, though there were several Alita spinoffs and re-releases, as well as a novel and game the massively popular manga only ever received a two-episode original video animation (OVA) series adaptation, which culled elements from the manga s first two volumes and altered several plot elements. Creator Yukito Kishiro expressed that he was too busy with the then-ongoing manga to fine-tune the anime, and in fact there were only two episodes planned. There has yet to be any other official Battle Angel Alita anime adaptation, much to the dismay of hardcore fans.Alita: Battle Angel could indeed change all that, however, with its refusal to stray too far from the source material and its love for the original story. This is one of just a few times an anime or manga series has successfully seen the leap from manga pages to live action on the big screen with high-profile Hollywood actors, and it could be the beginning of a renaissance for the cyberpunk classic.Further Viewing: Cyberpunk ClassicsLooking for more films like Alita: Battle Angel? Tom Holland is riding high as Marvel Studios current live-action Spider-Man, but he is far from the first to slip on the Spidey suit. Some would say it was Tobey Maguire, with his three Spider-Man films directed by Sam Raimi, who kicked off the superhero movie era as we know it and respect must be paid; others would say Andrew Garfield was an underrated web-slinger who perhaps failed to soar less because of his performance than the movies that surrounded it. Others would counter with a GIF of Maguire dancing. We re here to settle the debate once and for all – at least Mark Ellis is. (Photo by Carole Bethuel)There has never been (and there will likely never be) a Cannes Film Festival like the one that just wrapped. Being the first major festival to conduct an in-person fest since the pandemic pause in 2020 meant all eyes were on the red carpet of the French Rivera; the Venice Film Festival had a scaled-down affair in late 2020, but it paled in comparison to what we saw on the Croisette. From the COVID-19 protocol restrictions and those same restrictions being ignored to the record low attendance, everything combined to give us the most stress-free year in recent memory. Those lucky enough to make their way to Cannes found tickets easily available and screenings just half full. Most of the galas – which previously were so packed that even people with tickets were turned away – frequently did not have enough attendees to open the balcony of the Grand Lumiere Theater.Still, despite all the changes, the 74th Cannes Film Festival was as it has always been, filled with exceptional characters, jaw-dropping camera work, astounding debuts, equally astounding disappointments, a little controversy, and best of all, the most impressive and avant-garde films in world cinema.Trying to pull a theme from this year s fest would be a difficult affair, given the varied selection. Still, we could easily discern that the festival programmers crafted a program tailored to an audience that has been trapped at home under economic uncertainty and grappling with the mental and physical wounds of 18 months spent battling COVID-19. This year we had narrative tales that mirrored what we have seen in our home communities: broken people looking for belonging, tales of isolation and regret, stories that articulate the yearning for family, and a longing for love – or, more precisely, lust. Nostalgic needle drops and narcissistic men may be the only things that rivaled the amount of sex we saw on screen the past few days.To put it plainly, this might have been the horniest lineup ever to grace the French festival. Red Rocket, Bergman Island, A Tale of Love and Desire, and Mothering Sunday all centered on sexed-up love stories. At the same time, films like Annette, Benedetta, and Palme d Or winner Titane all featured sex scenes that will have audiences talking through awards season. But sprinkled among these amorous offerings were a handful of entries that will be significant players in the 21- 22 awards season. Who knows? Julia Ducournau made history when she became just the second female director to win the top prize at Cannes; perhaps she could also capture audiences like Bong Joon-ho s Palme d Or and Best Picture winner Parasite did in 2019. We will just have to wait and see. In the meantime, read on for our picks for the six best films we saw at the Cannes Film Festival.

亚博体彩的网址 Best-Reviewed Spanish-Language Movies 2019Following the breakout success of Roma in 2018, it was another big year for Spanish-language cinema – across a number of genres. Rising-star horror director Issa Lopez gifted us with the horror fantasy Tigers Are Not Afraid, while the moving Mexican drama The Chambermaid was heralded by critics as a quiet masterpiece. But it was Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory, which earned the director his best Tomatometer score in decades and star Antonio Banderas the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival, that would be the best-reviewed Spanish-language film of the year. The order of the rank below reflects the Adjusted Score as of December 31, 2019. Scores might change over time.« Previous Category Next Category »

Promises (2008) and Captain Fantastic (2017)Rami Malek: Bohemian Rhapsody – No prior nominationsStatistically speaking, the prior nominees without wins (Bradley Cooper, Willem Dafoe, Viggo Mortensen) and the lone first-timer (Rami Malek) have a better chance of winning than Oscar winner Christian Bale. Prior nominees without wins and first-time nominees have won 15 of the last 18 Oscars, with first-time winners Matthew McConaughey, Eddie Redmayne, Leonardo DiCaprio, Casey Affleck, and Gary Oldman winning in the last five years. The even distribution of nominations and awards to first-timers and prior nominees has forced us to dig deep to find an advantage between prior nominees (without wins) and those with zero Oscar love. The Academy has awarded 10 of the last 18 Oscars to actors playing real-life characters (more than any category this century). The reason we’re bringing this up is that 4 of the 5 nominees this year played real-life characters – in Vice, Bohemian Rhapsody, At Eternity’s Gate, and Green Book. Right now, Malek seems like the statistical frontrunner because six of the seven first-time nominated winners since 2001 have played real-life characters (Jamie Foxx, Adrien Brody, Forest Whitaker, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Matthew McConaughey, Eddie Redmayne).Who has the advantage? The competition is fierce, but we think Rami Malek has the advantage because the Academy loves to award first-time nominees for playing real life characters.Best Supporting Actor: No Oscar History? No worries. (Photo by @ Universal)Nominees since 2001: 17 prior Oscar winners, 34 prior nominees (with no wins), and 39 first-time nominees.Winners since 2001: 1 Oscar winner, 5 prior nominees, and 12 first-time nominees.Nominated in 2019: 2 Oscar winners, and 3 first-time nominees.Mahershala Ali: Green Book – 1 Oscar win for Moonlight (2016)Sam Rockwell: Vice – 1 Oscar win for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2018)Sam Elliott: A Star is Born – No prior nominationsRichard E. Grant: Can You Ever Forgive Me? – No prior nominationsAdam Driver: BlacKkKlansman -No prior nominationsThis category leans heavily towards first-time nominees and winners with 17 of the last 18 Oscars going to first-time winners. Twelve of those 17 actors, 12 were first-time nominees, with five first-time nominees winning consecutively since 2014 (Jared Leto, J.K. Simmons, Mark Rylance, Mahershala Ali, Sam Rockwell). This statistic will help Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman), Sam Elliott (A Star is Born), and Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) because they are first-time nominees who are up against prior Oscar winners Mahershala Ali (Green Book) and Sam Rockwell (Vice).Who has the advantage? Adam Driver, Sam Elliott, and Richard E. Grant are the actors to watch according to the category’s history – even if the pundits have Mahershala Ali as favorite.Best Supporting Actress: First-Time Nominees Step Right Up(Photo by @ Netflix)Nominees since 2001: 20 prior Oscar winners, 23 prior nominees (with no wins), and 47 first-time nominees.Winners since 2001: 0 Oscar winners, 6 prior nominees, and 12 first-time nominees.Nominated in 2019: 2 Oscar winners, 1 prior nominee (with no wins), and 2 first-time nominees.Emma Stone: The Favourite – 1 Oscar win for La La Land (2016) and one prior nomination for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)Rachel Weisz: The Favourite – 1 Oscar win for The Constant Gardener (2005)Amy Adam: Vice – five prior nominations for Junebug (2005), Doubt (2008), The Fighter (2010), The Master (2012) and American Hustle (2013)Regina King: If Beale Street Could Talk – No prior nominationsMarina de Tavira: Roma –No prior nominationsFirst-time winners have won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar 18 times since 2001. No other acting category can boast this stat, which gives Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk), Amy Adams (Vice), and Marina de Tavira (Roma) the advantage over Oscar winners and The Favourite co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.King and de Tavira have an advantage over multiple-time nominee Adams, because they’re first-time nominees in a category that has awarded 12 of the last 18 Oscars to first-time nominees. The category is so first-time-nominee–loaded that four of the last five winners (Lupita Nyong’o, Patricia Arquette, Alicia Vikander, Allison Janney) were first-time nominees, with Viola Davis (Fences) being the prior-nominated standout of the group.Who has the advantage? Regina King is almost a guaranteed lock to win the Oscar. However, based on the data we’ve analyzed, Marina de Tavira has a better probability of winning because Roma was nominated for Best Picture – 11 of the last 18 winning actresses have appeared in movies nominated for Best Picture. Could an upset be brewing? If she wins, you heard it here first. Watch: Judd Apatow on the making of The 40-Year-Old Virgin above. In 2019, Rotten Tomatoes turns 21, and to mark the occasion we’re celebrating the 21 Most Memorable Moments from the movies over the last 21 years. In this special video series, we speak to the actors and filmmakers who made those moments happen, revealing behind-the-scenes details of how they came to be and diving deep into why they’ve stuck with us for so long. Once we’ve announced all 21, it will be up to you, the fans, to vote for which is the most memorable moment of all. In this episode of our ‘21 Most Memorable Moments’ series, director and co-writer Judd Apatow takes us behind the scenes of the infamous (and real-life!) chest-waxing scene from The 40-Year-Old Virgin.VOTE FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR 21 MOST MEMORABLE MOVIE MOMENTS POLLTHE MOVIE: The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) 85%It’s hard to believe that Judd Apatow’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin is just 14 years old – it feels like we’ve been living in the Apatow comedy era for so much longer than that. Back then, Steve Carell – whose series The Office had just debuted and had yet to take on cult status – was not quite a household name, and Apatow himself hadn’t become his own brand of comedy. (Say “Apatow production” today and moviegoers know exactly the kind of smart, sweet, and raunchy ride they re in for – and who’s likely to be appearing in it.) In a sense, Virgin, Apatow’s feature directing debut, recalibrated comedy for the new millennium, bringing an edge to the rom-com formula, introducing us to a new kind of hero in Andy (Carell), and ushering in the faces who would come to dominate comedy for the next decade and a half (Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill, and Mindy Kaling all appear in parts big and small). It all got started on the set of another seminal comedy, Anchorman, which Apatow was producing and Carell was co-starring in “I think that the pitch he had was, ‘You know how when you touch
