Barely one month after announcing the project, Beyoncé has dropped her latest visual album, titled Black Is King, on the streaming service Disney+. The surprise new release stems from her involvement with last year’s live-action reimagining of The Lion King and is a complimentary work to her 2019 record The Lion King: The Gift. The first reviews of the musical film, which wasn’t screened early for critics, are unanimously positive, recognizing its visual craftsmanship, timeliness, and how it progresses both its material and Beyoncé s own career as an artist. Here’s what critics are saying about Beyoncé s Black Is King:How does this project fit into Beyoncé’s artistic reign?Beyoncé, the master of the visual album, just keeps getting better with each release.  Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen, Sydney Morning HeraldThe greatest success of Black Is King, with all its ambitions, purposeful revelations and nods by Beyoncé, may be the conformation of its creator and star as the cultural Queen of our time.  Dominic Patten, Deadline[It] is a particularly genius sleight of hand only she could pull off.  Jude Dry, IndieWireIt’s a remarkable addition to the pop world and tribute to her artistry.  Anne Brodie, What She SaidThe product feels like a natural progression in her evolution as an artist… and truly, the outfits are just fabulous — possibly her best to date.  Anna Menta, DeciderBlack Is King doesn’t exactly stand with the best of her previous work — it’s a pleasure but not a landmark — but the Queen Bey goes through it with her head up and her crown intact.  Steve Pond, The Wrap(Photo by Disney+)Is it only for Beyoncé fans? With appearances from Jay-Z, Kelly Rowland, Pharrell and Naomi Campbell, this star-studded film has something for everyone. Chanté Joseph, GuardianThe Queen Bey orchestrated visual album is… well, rather excellent and exciting on various fronts. Dominic Patten, DeadlineHow does it honor the legacy of The Lion King?It bears little resemblance to the Disney film. Anna Menta, DeciderBeyoncé, who lent her voice to Nala in said remake, is here to offer a corrective… a bold and unique offering that’s brimming with Black pride. Amon Warmann, Empire MagazineThe Lion King always was and should have been an African-told story. And while Beyoncé’s lens is certainly an American one, her inclusion of Nigerian, Ghanaian, and Cameroonian collaborators drives home this necessity. Jude Dry, IndieWireThe ties to The Lion King occasionally ground the story in that familiar coming-of-age story, but they just as often feel beside the point. Steve Pond, The WrapThough some sections incorporating dialogue feel a little clunky, the parallel generally works well. Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen, Sydney Morning HeraldIf the public is tiring of Disney doggedly remaking all of its old animations in live action format, finally some original content is coming out of the project as well. David Smyth, London Evening Standard(Photo by Disney+)What else is Black Is King reminiscent of?Similar in stature and design to Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker film from 1988, Black Is King is clearly structured to be an event release in this time of essentially endless options. Dominic Patten, DeadlineAt times, it feels like Terence Malick’s Tree of Life meets Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther. Jeremy Helligar, VarietyHow are the visuals of this visual album?Black Is King is a visual masterpiece. It’s almost overwhelming. Anna Menta, DeciderIf there is one thing to be said about Black Is King, it’s that it is visually stunning — from beginning to end. The whole thing. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyEach scene somehow more spectacular than its predecessor, Black Is King is a feast for the eyes. Amon Warmann, Empire MagazineIt’s a sumptuous visual feast, from detailed costuming to choreography. Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen, Sydney Morning HeraldBlack Is King is a visual feast; it provides several slow-panning scenes of stillness where we absorb the striking beauty and duality of bright colors against deep brown tones. Chanté Joseph, GuardianThis visual feast… finds its moments of glory in the strength of its images, which are more arresting than the story or the subtext. Steve Pond, The Wrap(Photo by Disney+)Who else deserves recognition for the artistry on display?Beyoncé’s fashion is next-level throughout Black Is King… Shout-out to costume designer Zerina Akers for making Bey look fierce, flawless and Afro-fabulous. Chuck Arnold, New York PostEvery single outfit that Beyoncé wears is just absolutely beautiful. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyThe real star of the visual film, however, is the raw, untapped talent from performers around the world showcasing their rich tradition and culture, history and lineage. Cydney Henderson, USA TodayWhat’s the best musical number? When supermodel Naomi Campbell, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, and Beyoncé’s fellow former Destiny’s Child Kelly Rowland pop up during Brown Skin Girl, a tribute to Black women, it feels transcendent. Jeremy Helligar, Variety Brown Skin Girl is especially moving, showing Beyoncé, Rowland and Blue Ivy together in a strong visual affirmation of generational black womanhood. Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen, Sydney Morning HeraldWill Black Is King move you?I’ll admit, I got emotional when Beyoncé and former Destiny Child’s member Kelly Rowland were singing praises to each other. Anna Menta, DeciderIt is impossible to watch the emotive story unfold, accompanied by Warsan Shire’s poetry, Yrsa Daley-Ward’s writing and warm images of west Africa, without feeling emotional. Chanté Joseph, Guardian(Photo by Disney+)Are there any imperfections? The uneven music of the original soundtrack, though enhanced by the visual accompaniment, can still be hit or miss. Jeremy Helligar, VarietyThere is one part that I would totally skip if I were to watch it again. The celestial stuff… For me, it felt a little weird and out of place. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyIt’s mildly disappointing that more inspiration isn’t drawn from East Africa given that’s where The Lion King is set. Amon Warmann, Empire MagazineHow important is Black Is King to young Black people in particular?Black Is King, if nothing else, will perhaps inspire them to learn about the history of their race and the ways in which it has shaped the world. Jeremy Helligar, VarietyThere’s an urgency in the way that Beyoncé is addressing the black kings, as if she feels like she’s running out of time. Anna Menta, DeciderBlack Is King is both her gift and her hope for humanity. Jude Dry, IndieWireRyan FujitaniIs this another masterpiece for our time?Black Is King [is] vital to the current conversation in a way that no one could have foreseen, but is most welcome. Amon Warmann, Empire MagazineHer visual album has taken on new meaning following the reemergence of the Black Lives Matter movement and the fight against police brutality and racism. Cydney Henderson, USA TodayWith the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement this year, Black Is King is a timely, powerful declaration of pride. Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen, Sydney Morning HeraldWith this vivid celebration, she goes way beyond saying Black Lives Matter to showing the dazzling inspiration of her ancestry. David Smyth, London Evening StandardThe film is being released at a time when Disney is coming to terms with some of its own racist past. Steve Pond, The WrapWhat the world needs now is love, sweet, love, and this colorful reminder of the power and glory of Black, here in America but even more so in Africa. Jeremy Helligar, VarietyBlack Is King premieres on Disney+ on Friday, July 31. It was a viewpoint Kripke presented to Ennis when the two sat down to talk about how The Boys could become a television show. In bringing the humanity Ennis characters ultimately find further to the surface, Kripke felt he could realize the shocking “water-cooler moments” while advancing the story or advancing the character or to make a satirical point about what s going on in our culture. “So I get to make a story about politics, athletics, celebrity, corporations, the military industrial complex — all within the guise of irreverent superhero show,” he continued.  “This is an endlessly inventive place for me to play, and sure enough, once we got together with the writers, we found that was true.”At the same time, Kripke believes the show also has to potential to be one of the most “human” superhero stories to appear on a screen of any size.“I wanted to feel the humanity of these people and all its complicated, messy, glory,” he said. “[In] my experience of superhero material — and I know there s more emotional stuff out there — it s rarely done where you have these characters who are just complicated and contradictory. And so the guiding North Star for us on this show was always, What s the single most realistic way that this character can react in any given moment? ”The result: characters with PTSD, panic attacks, drug addiction, sexual dysfunction, and the morbid need to protect their share of the gross profits. The ideas will be familiar to readers of the comic book, but one element Kripke felt he had to change was the voice of Hughie from a Scottish to an American accent. (Ennis approved the switch as long as Butcher remained British.)“Because our first play is for an American audience, I would like that audience surrogate to be American,” he explained. “Garth will read every script, and really the only thing he comes back with is, ‘Here s a lot of line notes of what a British person would really say.’ Which, I am more than happy to utilize.”Meanwhile, The Seven represent a sort of American corporate exceptionalism, with Madelyn Stillwell (Elisabeth Shue) running the team behind the scenes for Vought, the company marketing and bank-rolling the best known superheroes. As Shue put it at Comic-Con, “she’s drunk with power.” But is unclear if that power — or something else — drives what actor Anthony Starr called “Oedipal issues” between Stillwell and his character, Homelander. The seeming Superman lives the most veiled existence, setting the tone for the rest of the Seven’s hang-ups and insecurities — the very things The Boys hope to exploit for Butcher’s revenge and the strings Stillwell pulls on to maintain control of her super-employees.“It was a great counter-narrative to the DC/Marvel stuff,” Urban said of the conflict during the panel.“Which you’re in!” Rogen interjected. “You can have it all!”But it seems unlikely The Seven and The Boys can have it all, with one side or the other ceding some territory as Butcher s private war becomes an open conflict in The Boys s first season. The Boys streams on Amazon Prime Video on July 26.

Netflix released Martin Scorsese s long-anticipated The Irishman into very select theaters this weekend ahead of the film s digital release on the streaming platform November 27. And so the world is finally getting its first look at the epic three-and-a-half–hour gangster flick that reunites Scorsese favorites Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci and also features Al Pacino, starring in a Scorsese picture for the very first time. Critics are loving it so far: The movie is Certified Fresh at 97% on the Tomatometer, and the director and lead cast are all considered sure-things for nominations this awards season. But is this adaptation of I Heard You Paint Houses, the story of gangster Frank The Irishman Sheeran and his relationship with union leader Jimmy Hoffa, everything the buzz says it is? That s the question Mark Ellis is asking critics Scott Mantz and Angie Han (Mashable) in this Irishman deep dive. The panel tackles all the big questions about Netflix s big Oscar play: Is it Scorsese s best movie? Who stands out in the cast? Does the movie completely sideline its female cast? And, of course, we ask if this movie will land the legendary director his second Best Picture statuette? The Irishman is in select theaters now and available on Netflix November 27, 2019. Like this? We have been busy at Rotten Tomatoes these last two months recommending tons of movies and TV series to watch during quarantine (you can find a ton of lists here). But sometimes you re not in a position, or mood, to plonk yourself down in front of a screen. Perhaps you re working, or gardening, or cooking, or exercising, or hiding in a closet for a few minutes of peace and quiet away from your kids/pupils/audience. Either way: tough to follow the twists and turns of Ozark as you do that. To help in these moments – and to generally keep you sane and healthy as we endure our collective cabin fever – the RT staff curated a list of 15 scores to pair with different parts of your quarantine life. Looking for something to push you through that last set of burpees? We have an orchestral doozy for you. Got a swoony Zoom date? Try something with French flavors. Want a new soundtrack to your Animal Crossing hours? Daft Punk is here to help. What movie music are you listening to at home? Let us know in the comments. Gattaca (1997) 83%(Photo by © Columbia/courtesy Everett Collection)Composer: Michael NymanThere are moments in Gattaca where nothing much is happening on-screen, but the rich Michael Nyman score is going in hard. In my early Gattaca-watching career (I ve seen the movie eight or nine times now), I thought this was faulty, like the music was overcompensating. Plainly, this was a bad take. The music is devastatingly romantic. And not just how it informs the relationship between Jerome and Irene (Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman), but also Jerome s love for himself, to believe he is capable of something far beyond his cursed birthright. These times ask us to search for this kind of inner strength, to navigate daily life s new chaos, and carry a torch of hope for the not-too-distant-future. Gattaca s soundtrack, culminating in the impossible beauty of The Arrival, is the music of that guiding light.Listen when: Working from home – this s t is motivating! – but only if you like your job, and you re not on a call. – Alex Vo, EditorRomeo and Juliet (1968) 95%(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)Composer: Nino RotaItalian composer Nino Rota has quite the résumé: La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, and, of course, the first two Godfather films, both of which earned him Oscar nominations, and the second of which got him a win. My personal favorite, though, is his score for Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet, starring Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey. Maybe it takes me back to the high school English class in which I first saw the film, but there’s something about Rota’s love theme – a little trepidatious at first before a rousing strings-led swell, all laced with a certain feeling it’s not going to turn out well – that helps me focus when editing or reading. Be warned though: The score’s final tracks, which accompany the tragic finale on screen, are intense. Skip those, re-start from the beginning, and pretend the young lovers had a dagger-less ending.Listen when: You’ve carved out some time in your day to read (and have got your looking interested photo programmed to your Zoom feed). – Joel Meares, Editor-in-ChiefAnatomy of a Murder (1959) 100%(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection )Composers: Duke Ellington, Billy StrayhornThere are several reasons why Otto Preminger s Anatomy of a Murder is one of the greatest courtroom dramas ever, but it s arguably best remembered for its striking opening title sequence by Saul Bass and its incredible soundtrack, composed by none other than jazz legend Duke Ellington and his longtime collaborator Billy Strayhorn. Together, Ellington and Strayhorn put together a complete musical package that was alternately sultry ( Flirtibird ), playful ( Happy Anatomy ), melancholic ( Almost Cried ), and mysterious ( Midnight Indigo ), and it all still feels fresh and alive today. Of course, the most memorable song is probably the Main Title theme that accompanies Bass opening credits, but the whole score just drips with style. It s also worth noting that it was not only one of the first soundtracks entirely scored by jazz musicians, but also the first one for a major Hollywood film that was created by an African-American composer. Movie soundtrack or not, it s a masterpiece.Listen when: You re feeling fancy and having a glass of wine in a bubble bath. – Ryan Fujitani, Snr. EditorThe Handmaiden (2016) 95%(Photo by © Amazon Studios /Courtesy Everett Collection)Composer: Jo Yeong-wookThe Handmaiden, like so many others, is the type of film that Bong Joon-ho spoke of when he urged English-speaking audiences to hurdle over the one-inch barrier of subtitles during one of his acceptance speeches last year for Parasite. The Korean- and Japanese-language film, which was not selected for Best International Film in 2016, sadly never reached a wide audience and was instead relegated to join other underrated/unknown non-English gems (most of which are available to stream – so get busy). Due to its under-the-radar status, many not only missed the seductive romance-thriller director Park Chan-wook weaved, but also the humorous and erotic score that plays throughout most of the film. The music, like the film it plays beneath, is surprising and genre-defying, mixing dark themes employing strings, clarinets, and harps with romantic melodies.Listen when: You re scrolling through exotic locales, dreaming of the day you can travel to distant lands once again. – Jacqueline Coley, EditorDrive (2011) 93%(Photo by Richard Foreman Jr/©FilmDistric/Courtesy Everett Collection)Composer: Cliff MartinezYou can split Drive s original Cliff Martinez soundtrack into three categories: Pensive, ethereal, and fittingly, driving. Kick Your Teeth and Skull Crushing are among the pensive songs, and they suggest a shadow looming high over your shoulders, like a clockwork beast wound up to strike. The ethereal songs make you feel like you re drifting through a hazy dream, and have incongruous names like They Broke His Pelvis and Wrong Floor. These two moods converge in the driving songs ( Rubber Head, Where s the Deluxe Version?, Hammer ) that speak to those luxuriating in their delusional power fantasies and modern fairy tales. And, in this world, who can blame them?Listen when: You re out for a sanctioned late-night drive, on the route with the most lights. – VoToy Story (1995) 100% and Toy Story 2 (1999) 100%(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Pixar)Composer: Randy NewmanOver four films, the themes and movements of Randy Newman’s Toy Story scores have become as familiar to many ’90s kids as “The I

1. FIRST MOVIE UNITING SCORSESE, DE NIRO, AND DICAPRIO STARTS FILMING SOON Ryan FujitaniLike many directors of his stature, Martin Scorsese enjoys working with some of the same actors repeatedly. Early in his career, the actor Scorsese worked with the most was Robert De Niro (Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, and recently, The Irishman), and in the 2000s and 2010s, that distinction more often went to Leonardo DiCaprio (The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island). For his next film, Martin Scorsese is going to double down, so to speak, by working with both Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. That film, which starts filming in March, will be called Killers of the Flower Moon, based upon a non-fiction book about a series of murders in Oklahoma in the 1920s that was one of the first major cases taken on by the then-new Federal Bureau of Investigation. Leonardo DiCaprio is expected to play one of the FBI agents, and Robert De Niro will play a local cattle rancher suspected of committing the murders of Osage tribe members.2. ALEXANDER PAYNE TO REMAKE BABETTE S FEAST(Photo by (c) Orion courtesy Everett Collection)As good as they often are, most films in a language other than English are going to face a box office handicap in the United States, so there is a very old tradition of some of those movies being remade in English. One that has arguably crossed over well in the last 30 years or so is 1987 s Babette s Feast (Fresh at 97%), a Danish film about a French woman who brings her culinary skills to a remote village unaccustomed to food that tastes good. Although he had a bit of a critical misstep with Downsizing (Rotten at 48%), director Alexander Payne has otherwise delivered a series of Certified Fresh films (including Election, About Schmidt, Sideways, and Nebraska), and he s now developing an English-language reimagining of Babette s Feast, which will be set in a religious community in small-town Minnesota.3. 2020 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL COMPETITION FILMS ANNOUNCED (Photo by Amazon Studios)For pretty much every year since the 1990s, the Sundance Film Festival has become the first place that many people hear about some of the films that later go on to become awards season contenders. (This year, those films include Clemency, Hala, and Honey Boy.) We don t have enough space here to list all of the films in Dramatic Competition next year, but we will note that the roster is one of Sundance s most diverse ever, with over half the films being directed by people of color. Some of the more famous actors in competition in 2020 include Zazie Beetz and Winston Duke (Nine Days), Daniel Dae Kim (BLAST BEAT), Meek Mill (Charm City Kings), Elisabeth Moss (Shirley), Andy Samberg (Palm Springs), Tessa Thompson (Sylvie s Love), and Steven Yuen (Minari).4. DAKOTA AND ELLE FANNING TO PLAY SISTERS FOR THE FIRST TIME
1. How soon will Wolverine show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Throughout 2018, people including Feige insisted Marvel could not even begin to cook up ideas for the X-Men or Fantastic Four until the deal for the merger officially closed. There was also some talk about keeping the Fox-controlled Marvel assets separate, but that notion was later dismissed by Disney CEO Bob Iger.“There shouldn’t be two Marvels,” he said back in September.Since we previously assumed a lingering Fox contingent might delay Marvel Studios’ control of the characters, we counted out an X-Men stinger in Avengers: Endgame. Instead, we predicted Logan’s adamantium claws might appear in a 2021 mid-credits stinger scene. Now, we think it is possible — though still highly unlikely — the characters might be referenced in a singular image or a word. (It would have to be something easily shot in the next week or two as the studio could not use any of the characters or iconography until now.)But even if Marvel manages to add a Fantastic Four or X-Men tease to Endgame, that stinger moment is all we will see of the characters for some time. Marvel Studios’ 2020 output inches closer to production even if the company declines to reveal their schedule until after Endgame’s release. At this point, we know The Eternals, Black Widow, Shang-Chi, and sequels for Doctor Strange and Black Panther are in the pipeline. Presumably, three of those projects will fill the 2020 release dates. Of course, the studio has altered its plan before, bumping Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and a proposed Inhumans film to secure a place for Spider-Man: Homecoming. With that in mind, it is possible the first Marvel Studios X-Men or Fantastic Four film could happen in 2021, particularly if Feige ever gets back to Legion’s Noah Hawley about his Doctor Doom script.2. Will Dark Phoenix and New Mutants Still Be Released? While Dark Phoenix will hit theaters this June, the fate of New Mutants is more tenuous. Though still slated for an August 2 release, the film’s planned 2018 reshoots (that would change more than 50 percent of the film and introduce a new character to the story) reportedly never took place and are no longer scheduled to occur.Until the deal closed, Fox had to abide by its original agreement with Marvel Entertainment and release X-Men films at regular intervals. It also had to plan for a future in which it and Disney remained separate entities just in case the deal fell through or was delayed beyond the summer. Around this time last year, both films were pushed back to accommodate reshoots. But considering New Mutants’ additional photography never took place, it is fair to wonder if Fox delayed both films to save on development costs for other X-Men projects Marvel may eventually cancel. There is plenty to suggest this was the case and it may lead to New Mutants losing its theatrical release.3. What Other Marvel Films Did Fox Have In Development?(Photo by Mary Evans/Twentieth Century Fox / Marvel Comics/Ronald Grant/Everett Collection)Under the spirit of “business as usual” in the event the deal fell through, Fox planned to expand its output of Marvel-based films to three projects per year. The plan included more X-Men sequels while branching out with lesser known characters. One project centering on fan-favorite mutant Kitty Pryde was announced and would see Deadpool director Tim Miller returning to the X-fold. Said to be based on Uncanny X-Men #143, the film would focus on Kitty’s struggle against a N’Garai demon while spending a lonely Christmas night in the X-Mansion. Comic-book writer Brian Michael Bendis was said to be adapting the issue into a feature script for Miller. Neither has commented on the project’s prospects.Though little has been said since word first broke about the project, James Franco was set to star in a film focusing on X-Factor favorite Jamie Madrox, a.k.a. The Multiple Man. Franco’s real-life troubles may have sent this one to the back-burner, but considering X-Men characters must now compete with Shang-Chi and The Eternals for one of Marvel Studios’ coveted release dates, expect any solo X-Men outings to be a late 2020s development. Channing Tatum’s long-delayed Gambit film is also more than likely kaput. As we mentioned above, Noah Hawley signed on to develop a feature film for the greatest of Marvel villains, Doctor Doom. Recently, the Legion FX series executive producer revealed Feige asked about the draft he completed some time ago. Unfortunately, Hawley has not heard from the Marvel Studios boss since. But since we all want Doom to face off against the heroes, we hope this one works out. Finally, X-Force, the Deadpool 2 spin-off, was expected to begin shooting in late 2018 under the direction of Bad Times at the El Royale’s Drew Goddard. With cast members like Josh Brolin, Zazie Beetz, and Ryan Reynolds reprising their Deadpool 2 roles, it seemed set to become the last Fox-produced X-Men film. Sadly, Goddard refused to comment on the project following news of the acquisition’s imminent closure. And with X-Force co-creator Rob Liefeld openly discussing the film’s demise on Twitter, we’re going to assume this one is also toast.4. What About Deadpool 3?Feels like the first day of ‘Pool. pic.twitter.com/QVy8fCxgqr Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) March 19, 2019As Reynolds once joked, they may skip the third film entirely and go straight to Deadpool 4 or 5. The actor, who co-wrote the sequel with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, also said the narrative weight of taking everything away from the character in order to build him up again will only lead to diminishing returns. In light of that, he offered the possibility of playing Deadpool as a supporting character in films like X-Force. Reese and Wernick, meanwhile, have said they’d love to team Deadpool up with Spider-Man — a pairing so popular it had its own comic book.It is possible Reynolds was just cushioning himself should Marvel Studios choose not to continue with his vision of Deadpool — it is a PG-13 production house, after all — but it may also be a savvy ploy to negotiate with the company for a sweet multi-picture contract in which Deadpool shows up, does something wacky, and disappears again. It is certainly possible to tone down some of Wade Wilson’s antics for the MCU, which is what the Christmas release of a PG-13 Deadpool 2 called Once Upon a Deadpool proved.Meanwhile, Iger once told investors it is possible to carve out an R-rated niche for Marvel to allow for more D

The scary stories include adaptations and originals.(Photo by Shudder)Adaptations include Stephen King’s “Gray Matter” (which kicks off the series), Joe Hill’s “By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain,” Joe R. Lansdale’s “The Companion,” Josh Malerman’s “The House of the Head,” Christopher Buehlman’s “The Man in the Suitcase,” Bruce Jones’ “All Hallows Eve,” and John Skipp and Dori Miller’s “Times Is Tough in Musky Holler.”The original stories include “Lydia Layne’s Better Half” by John Harrison and Nicotero, “Skincrawlers” by Paul Dini and Stephen Langford, “Night of the Paw” by John Esposito, and “Bad Wolf Down” by Rob Schrab.Again, Nicotero hit up his friends to obtain the season’s best-known story: “I actually wrote Stephen King and said, ‘Can’t be Creepshow without a Stephen King story. What do you think?’ And he’s like, ‘I have just the story!’ Within 20 minutes, Stephen had two different stories that he had proposed,” Nicotero said, and once production began, it was clear “Gray Matter” was the right choice. “It was just cool that he said, ‘Yeah man, sure.’”6. It honors its roots.(Photo by Warner Brothers/courtesy Everett Collection)While filmmaking techniques have advanced in the more than 35 years since the original, which was originally designed to pay tribute to mid-century horror comics, this Creepshow retains much of its look. That means intros and outros that use the familiar comic book motif.“Because of the comic book vibe with all the panels, I think Creepshow is a different experience. We are really embracing the split-screens and going through the panels. So it’s got that flair and flavor to it, which is great,” Nicotero said. And the crew — from prop makers to set decorators — are also reverent horror fans, and have filled the series with plenty of Easter Eggs. Gray Matter has “probably 30” nods to King’s work. An ash tray from the original film owned by one of Nicotero’s friends appears in every episode.“I want people to look and then they’ll watch it a couple more times,” he said of “Gray Matter.” “There’s a lot of little things. Comic books, the voodoo doll – I forget half of them because we’ve been shooting for seven weeks. I’ll probably go back and go, ‘Oh s , I forgot about that one!’ But it’s been fun because even the art department guys come and go, ‘Look, we made this!’ and I’m like ‘That’s great, I didn’t think about that!’ Even ‘The House of the Head,’ … it’s a really great psychological thriller about a little girl who comes home and her dollhouse is haunted. She goes to the store and she’s like, ‘I need help,’ and she goes to the store and gets a cop and puts the cop toy in and then the cop gets killed and she goes and gets an Indian. We did a little Chief Woodenhead from Creepshow 2 as the Indian. All that nerdy s where we’re doing it and I’m like, ‘No one’s ever going to notice this,’ and on set, half the crew is like, ‘Is that Chief Woodenhead?!’ I’m like, ‘How the f do you guys know that? This is great.’ So there’s a lot of that kind of stuff, and it’s been fun.”New episodes of Creepshow debut Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on Shudder’s TV live-stream and On Demand.Like this? And with the second episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the picture of the post-Blip world is coming more clearly into focus. Governments are destabilized, certain parts of the world experienced a taste of peace while half its population was gone, and, seemingly, the US had a plan for Captain America. The episode also offered a number of introductions which seem to lead the mystery away from Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) and toward an unexpected enemy. So let s dive in and glean what we can from the program s latest episode and what a new truth might mean for Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).Couples Therapy, and Shipping Sam and Bucky(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)But before we get into the geopolitical aspects, let s give a few moments to Sam and Bucky s (Sebastian Stan) relationship. Yes, it is totally hetero and totally platonic, but it is interesting the way the Captain America strand of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has used film romance dynamics to charge scenes between Steve (Chris Evans) and his partners.Going by a certain reading of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Bucky is very much Steve s ex while Sam is, essentially, the new boyfriend. By utilizing rom-com dynamics, the film created a great shorthand to understand the emotions involved. And once we get to Bucky and Sam sitting in that old Volkswagen in Captain America: Civil War, their rivalry for Steve s friendship proved to be a great source for comedy. That dynamic only grows stronger as events position them into being a couple.Or, at least a couple in terms of the way the Captain America movies engaged with the romance tropes. Dr. Raynor s (Amy Aquino) choice to immediately employ couples therapy tactics on them not only lampshades that aspect of the dynamic, but plays into the characters discomfort with being a de facto couple. Also, it once again proved to be wildly funny as both Mackie and Stan play off of each other in a truly great way. Whether their dynamic is purely Odd Couple or something more just depends on how intensely you ship them. But all their discomfort does lead to one key point about Bucky: he s worried Steve was wrong about his ability to change. Presumably, this will be Bucky s objective for the rest of the season.Sam Learns About The TruthJoel MearesIn 2003, Marvel released a series called The Truth: Red, White Black. Written by Robert Morales with art from Kyle Baker, it told the story of a parallel Super Soldier program conducted on Black servicemen during World War II. Much like the real-life Tuskegee Experiments, it was conducted under false pretenses and without the explicit consent of the men involved. In the Marvel Universe, the experiment led to the deaths of at least 299 men. The one survivor, Isaiah Bradley, wound up with the full benefits of the Super Soldier Serum. Unfortunately, the wider US government was not so accepting of a Black Captain America and Isaiah was sentenced to life in prison after he went AWOL to destroy a Nazi Super Soldier lab. He is later pardoned and released, but exists as a legend known widely to Black Americans, but to few outside that community. And thanks to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, he s now a part of the MCU in the form of the great Carl Lumbly. His story has been altered somewhat – he is now a Korean War vet – but we think that context is more powerful for the MCU as the mid-20th Century is something of a blank slate for Marvel to work with. On a purely historical front, it s amazing for any modern series to even acknowledge Korea. And by placing Isaiah s story closer to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, the government s disgraceful treatment of him – locking him away for 30 years – becomes just that much starker. At no point during the movement was anyone even aware of Isaiah! Then there s the truth for Sam here: a Black Captain America came into existence in 1951 and only Bucky knew about him. That s a tough fact to process and an indication of what might ve happened had Sam just kept the shield for himself. It is pretty easy to imagine the government burying him (literally) and handing it to John Walker (Wyatt Russell).Considering how easy it was for those Baltimore Police to not recognize the Falcon, the people propping up Walker probably wouldn t have to work too hard to make Sam disappear.Flag Smashers And Power Brokers(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)Meanwhile, in Europe, we get a better idea of where the Flag-Smashers are coming from. In the wake of the Blip ending, a Global Repatriation Council was formed to help returning people reestablish their lives. According to Walker and Lemar Hoskins (Clé Bennett), this includes reactivating Social Security numbers (for US citizens), setting up healthcare options, and more. We also learn some of the people who were displaced now live in camps. But during the five years half the world s population was gone, people like Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman) experienced a taste of a world without borders, worries of overpopulation, and (we assume) corporate autocracies besides Stark Industries. Reclaiming that version of the world is her stated fight and it s hard to argue with all her points. Some, though, are easier to combat as they sound eerily reminiscent of Thanos s grim calculus. How does one reclaim a world of only 3 billion people except by killing 3 billion undesirables ? That thinking can only lead to something awful. At the same time, the sense of community she seemingly clings to can be scaled to include the returnees – unless, of course, she believes all the world leaders who also returned would object to that. That ambiguity is baked into the character, of course, as she is partially based on Marvel Comics Flag-Smasher, Karl Morgenthau, a Swiss anti-nationalist who came into conflict with Captain America, The Punisher, and even the Red Skull. Though his intentions of a world without nationalistic superiority were noble, his preferred method to further his goal, terrorism, indicated a flaw in his thinking. Cap even told him as much. For the moment, we re going to assume Karli shares this flaw. But that s presuming her stated goal is true. Perhaps the Flag Smashers are just ruse. Her apparent association with Power Broker indicates a much more fluid morality. As the name implies, the Power Broker is a person of means who offers super abilities and assets for personal gain. Curiously, the first version of the character was introduced as a satire of the health and fitness craze emerging in the late 1970s. Some of his schemes revolved around a wrestling promotion for super-powered people. He also ran afoul of John Walker and Lemar Hoskins. But perhaps the most intriguing thing about the Power Broker is his long association with Dr. Karl Malus, a mad scientist interested in the creation and application of superpowers. Is it possible they are the source of the Super Soldier Serum powering the Flag Smashers?Malus previously appeared in the second season of Jessica Jones in the form of Callum Keith Rennie. There, he was one of the IGH scientists involved in the creation of Jessica s (Krysten Ritter) powers and her mother Alisa s (Janet McTeer) more problematic life. Malus presumably committed suicide when he blew up his lab, but as it is still unclear if the events of that series really happened in the MCU, the character could be in play. Or, at the very least, he could have perfected a stable serum variant for the Power Broker before his death.Well, presuming the Power Broker is the source of the serum Karli s using and the person hounding her via text messages. The story seems to be tying these things together, but it is possible they are separate things.Meanwhile, as Bucky notes, the arrival of a stable of Super Soldiers is a definite problem. If Karli got her hands on the serum, is there more out there? If it is in the hands of the Power Broker – for the moment, we re going to assume the series is using the nameless version of the character instead of Curtiss Jackson – they could unleash a terrible force on the world.Or a terrible force for Zemo to control. But we ll consider him more next week.Of Battlestars And U.S. Agents(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)As mentioned above, the episode also introduced Lemar Hoskins – aka Battlestar. The character has an interesting behind-the-scenes history which is relevant to the show s running themes. In preparation for John Walker to become Captain America in the comics in 1987, writer Mark Gruenwald decided he needed a Bucky of his own. Already established as a member of the Bold Urban Commandos (BUCs for short), he chose Lemar to become the fifth Bucky and appeared as such for a short while. Eventually, writer Dwayne McDuffie explained to him Buck is a derogatory term for African Americans originating from the days of slavery. The two agreed to rename him Battlestar and a story developed for Lemar to highlight the problem and switch to the new persona. The story also firmly established Lemar as Walker s partner instead of a sidekick.Considering the way The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has highlighted the treatment of Black superheroes thus far, we expect some of Battlestar s history will come into play across the remainder of the season. At the moment, he seems pretty happy to be part of the counterfeit Team Cap, but it is easy to imagine his status could change soon. In the moments we have with him so far, it is unclear if he is Walker s partner or sidekick. Clarifying that role will be key.Of course, some of that depends on what sort of man John Walker turns out to be. For the moment, he seems forthright, but that slight suggestion of territoriality in his last moments with Sam indicates he may not be as noble as Steve. Then again, has any man ever been as noble as Steve? The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres new episodes on Fridays on Disney+.On an Apple device? Recommended: 10 Fresh Jessica Walter Movies and SeriesWalter’s storied career dated back to the early ’60s and was wide-ranging, boasting plum roles in everything from the classic Clint Eastwood thriller Play Misty for Me to the animated spy spoof Archer. “Even my leading ladies – you know, in air quotes – were characters,” she told ELLE in 2019. “They were not Miss Vanilla Ice Cream. They weren t holding the horse while John Wayne galloped into the sunset.”Lucille Bluth, her character that arguably most struck a chord with viewers, was certainly no different. And it’s to Walter’s immense credit that she was able to stand out in one of the best-cast comedies ever – if not downright own certain scenes. Here are a few times where she did just that.Klimpy’s BurnJust look at how Walter arches her eyebrows and closes her laminated menu after delivering “I don’t understand the question and I won’t respond to it,” one of the show’s most quotable one-liners. It practically screams: How dare you? Don t you know who I am? The Cost Of One Banana Here’s another scene that shows just how out-of-touch Lucille is. “I mean it’s one banana, Michael. What could it cost? Ten dollars?” Lucille asks. When her son Michael (Jason Bateman) calls her out on her ignorance, Walters gives a curt “I don’t have time for this” while dismissively shaking her head in a way that wonderfully emphasizes her character’s entitlement.Gene ParmesanOne of the show s best running gags – and there are a bunch – is Lucille’s private detective Gene Parmesan (Martin Mull) surprising his employer by showing up in shoddy costumes. Walter’s squealing in body-shaking, unadulterated glee at these reveals are absolutely delightful – and account for some of the few moments when Lucille’s pleasure doesn’t come at someone else s expense.Air quotesWalter displays some ace physical-comedy chops here, air-quoting twice, vodka martini in hand spilling on the floor each time, totally incensed and unfazed.“Take it back!”Lucille interacting with servers – or anyone with a job, really – is always comic gold. But we’re partial to how Walter indignantly lashes out at one with this shrilly-delivered doozy: “If I wanted something your thumb touched, I’d eat the inside of your ear!”The WinkAnother running gag – there’s an excellent arc where Lucille mistakes a side-effect warning on her prescription as an invitation to get sloshed – sees Walter’s character doubling down on her attempt to be charming with Michael and coming off as absolutely ridiculous.Dismissing ArizonaI d rather be dead in California than alive in Arizona. pic.twitter.com/NRqCMTYOno Arrested Development (@bluthquotes) April 11, 2017“Well I’d rather be dead in California than alive in Arizona,” Lucille
