(Photo by Matthias Clamer/FX)When Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi brought What We Do in the Shadows to theaters in 2014, it posed a simple-ish question: What if a group of centuries-old vampires decided to live together in an apartment in Wellington, New Zealand, and allowed themselves to be filmed for a documentary? The concept of mixing familiar horror genre tropes with modern-day comedic sensibilities and a mockumentary format was a win-win combination for the duo, and four years later, the story was retold – episodically and with its location shifted to Staten Island, New York – on FX.The 10-episode first season introduced audiences to a new gang of vampires, including Kayvan Novak as house leader, Nandor, Matt Berry and Natasia Demetriou as married vampire couple Laszlo and Nadja, Mark Proksch as the wildcard energy vampire Colin Robinson, and Harvey Guillen as Nandor s human familiar, Guillermo. In its season one finale, What We Do in the Shadows dropped a huge cliffhanger: After pining for the goal of one day being able to live a glamorous undead life — akin to Antonio Banderas s 500-year-old vampire Armand from Anne Rice s Interview With the Vampire — Guillermo, the unappreciated human in a house full of vampires, was dealt a huge blow when he learned he is distantly related to notorious vampire hunter, Abraham Van Helsing. How will Guillermo and his mons

1. ALFRED MOLINA TO RETURN AS DOC OCK IN NEXT TOM HOLLAND SPIDER-MAN MOVIE(Photo by (c) Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)Well before Disney made their dozens of announcements yesterday about almost every other Marvel movie, the next Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland (we ll just call it Spider-Man 3 for now) repeatedly popped up in social networking news. Having said that, it might be important to look at the various stories with caution, as not all of them have been confirmed. Let s start with the most official announcement, which is that Alfred Molina will be reprising his role as Spider-Man 2 (Certified Fresh at 93%) villain Doctor Octopus. Setting aside his apparent death in that film (sorry for the spoiler, but you only had sixteen years to see the movie), Molina s character also comes from what we could consider a separate movie reality (in which Tobey Maguire plays Spider-Man) than that of Tom Holland s Peter Parker, in the same way that Jamie Foxx s Electro was in a movie starring Andrew Garfield s Peter Parker (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). Many writers are interpreting these particular announcements as possible confirmations that the next Spider-Man could be a live-action take on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Certified Fresh at 97%), including stories like this one that state that Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Kirsten Dunst, and Emma Stone are returning as well. In truth, none of those actors has been officially announced yet, though it is worth mentioning that Emma Stone recently dropped out of Damien Chazelle s Babylon due to scheduling conflicts; we just don t know what those conflicts were. Elsewhere, it was also rumored that Charlie Cox, who played Daredevil in the popular Netflix series, might also appear in the film, but again, it s still just a rumor until it s confirmed. Sony Pictures has scheduled the next Spider-Man for December 17, 2021; you can read our own in-depth breakdown here.2. PLASTIC MAN GETTING  FEMALE-CENTRIC  REVAMP (PLASTIC WOMAN?) (Photo by DC Comics)The idea of the original super-stretchy superhero Plastic Man (who predates, say, DC Comics own Elongated Man, Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four, Elastigirl of The Incredibles, and Ms. Marvel) getting his own movie has been bouncing around since the 1990s when the Wachowski siblings wrote a Plastic Man screenplay as a potential project to take up after The Matrix. Warner Bros. has once again revived the Plastic Man project, but this time, it s being described as female-centric, although it s unclear what exactly that means (for example, will Plastic Man now be a woman, or will there be another lead character who s a woman?). The new creative lead on Plastic Man (Plastic Woman, maybe?) will be relatively new screenwriter Cat Vasko, who has worked on several not-yet-produced projects, including Fierce Kingdom, Margot Robbie s Queen of the Air, and an adaptation of the award-winning comic book series Lumberjanes.3. DIRECTOR STEVEN SODERBERGH IS MAKING A SEX, LIES VIDEOTAPE SEQUEL (Photo by Outlaw Productions)It s difficult to imagine now, with all that has happened and changed in the last few decades, but there was a time (1989, to be precise), when the Sundance Film Festival was a relatively sleepy little film festival up in the mountains that wasn t besieged every year by the film industry and aspiring filmmakers. The movie that arguably started the indie revolution of the 1990s was Steven Soderbergh s debut feature film, sex, lies videotape (Certified Fresh at 96%), starring James Spader, Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher, and Laura San Giacomo. Over 30 years later, Soderbergh revealed this week that he is now working on a sequel to that film with its two female leads, Andie MacDowell and Laura San Giacomo, both agreeing to reprise their roles as sisters. Soderbergh didn t reveal anything else about the sequel, except that one of the sisters now has an adult daughter who is about the same age as the characters were in the original 1989 film.4. DREAMWORKS TO ADAPT POPULAR DOG MAN GRAPHIC NOVELS (Photo by Scholastic)Although Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Certified Fresh at 87%) may have been unfortunately titled (since it has yet to be followed by a second epic movie), the film also has a Fresh Audience Score of 61%. (Instead of a sequel movie, the story continues on Netflix as The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, which is now in in its fourth season.) The good news for Captain Underpants creator Dav Pilkey this week is that another of his popular children s graphic novels is now being developed as an animated feature film as well. DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures have acquired the rights to Pilkey s graphic novels series Dog Man for a feature film that will be directed by Peter Hastings, who has previously worked on the popular animated TV series Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. As the title suggests, Dog Man is a canine superhero who fights crime alongside his kitten sidekick Li l Petey. The various Dog Man graphic novels have sold nearly 40 million copies in print to date and have been translated into 40 different languages.5. JENNIFER HUDSON TO STAR IN HER OWN CHRISTMAS MUSICAL (Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)If the COVID-19 pandemic had never happened, the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect, starring Jennifer Hudson, would have come out this past August, instead of its new release date of August 13, 2021. While we all wait for that movie to come out, it sounds like Jennifer Hudson might already be preparing her next movie musical, as she is now producing and expected to star in a new project for New Line Cinema. The untitled musical comedy will revolve around Christmas songs both classic and new ones written for the movie  in a story about a down-and-out singer’s life being turned upside down when she is mistaken for writing the next Christmas hit. The untitled Christmas comedy is currently being written by TV writer Ira Madison III (Daybreak, Nikki Fre$h).6. CHRIS PRATT TO EARN THE BLACK BELT IN MARTIAL ARTS COMEDY (Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)This was obviously a big week for all things Marvel, but one of their stars lined up a project this week completely separate from all things superhero-related. Chris Pratt will star in the independent coming-of-age martial arts comedy The Black Belt, which he will also produce. The premise, written by TV writer Randall Green (Billions, The Perfect Date), revolves around a shy teenage boy who s trying to learn karate, with Chris Pratt attached to play the uncle who serves as a mentor in the boy s quest. Chris Pratt s Indivisible Productions will partner with a relatively new company called Monarch Media, which recently wrapped production on its first feature film, A Week Away. Other projects on Chris Pratt s schedule include the science fiction action movie The Tomorrow War (7/23/2021), the recently wrapped sequel Jurassic World: Dominion (6/10/2022), a supporting role as Star-Lord in Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), and, as of yesterday, a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for Disney+ in late 2022, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 sometime in 2023.7. KINGSMAN PRODUCER REVEALS PLANS FOR SEVEN MORE SUPER SPY MOVIES (Photo by Giles Keyte/©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)It was just eight years ago when comic book writer Mark Millar first published his indie series Kingsman: The Secret Service, but since then, those comics have given us Kingsman: The Secret Service (Certified Fresh at 74%), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Rotten at 51%), and coming soon, the prequel The King s Man (3/12/2021). Talking about his company s ambitious expansion plans, Marv Group CEO Zygi Kamasa revealed this week that producer and director Matthew Vaughn has plans for something like seven more Kingsman films, as well as a Kingsman TV series, and two or three other franchies. It s unclear what those seven additional Kingsman movies might be, but it could be that the prequel The King s Man, starring Gemma Arterton and Ralph Fiennes, could serve as a launching point for additional prequels, in addition to further Kingsman movies starring Taron Egerton. Kingsman could also inspire spin-off movies, and Mark Millar s comics are part of a Millarworld shared universe that also includes Kick-Ass (Certified Fresh at 76%), which, incidentally, Vaughn also directed.8. JURASSIC PARK SCREENWRITER GOING OLD SCHOOL WITH THE GREEN HORNET AND KATO (Photo by ©Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Although we regularly hear about new movies based on comic books and video games, it s been quite a while since this writer remembers writing about a new project based upon a radio serial from the 1930s. That, however, is exactly what Universal Pictures is now developing as The Green Hornet and Kato (titled thus to put emphasis on the martial arts expert sidekick), which has its roots both as a radio serial and as a short-lived-but-well-remembered 1960s TV series starring Bruce Lee as Kato. Universal s new project should not be confused with Sony s 2011 comedy The Green Hornet (Rotten at 44%), directed by Michel Gondry and starring Seth Rogen, which was considered a box office bomb and failed to launch a franchise. To get The Green Hornet and Kato revved up, Universal Pictures has enlisted one of their heavy hitter screenwriters, David Koepp, whose impressive filmography includes the first Jurassic Park, the first Spider-Man, David Fincher s Panic Room, and Tom Cruise s War of the Worlds (he s also also currently working on Harrison Ford s Indiana Jones 5 (July, 2022) and a remake of Bride of Frankenstein). Universal won the rights to The Green Hornet following a bidding war in January.9. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN (AND OTHERS) RESPOND TO WB S HBO MAX ANNOUNCEMENT(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/Paramount Pictures)Last week, Warner Bros. made the monumental announcement that their entire 2021 theatrical slate will also premiere day-and-date on the studio s HBO Max streaming service. That slate of 16-17 movies actually does not include Tenet (Fresh at 71%), since that movie already came out this past summer, but that hasn t deterred the film s director, Christopher Nolan, from speaking out against the move. Nolan described the HBO Max move as a bait and switch  against filmmakers who thought they were making big screen experiences for what Nolan called the worst streaming service. Other directors who voiced dissatisfaction with the deal included Patty Jenkins, Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7), Judd Apatow, and the Directors Guild of America. Of the directors whose films are included in the 2021 move, the most vocal has probably been Denis Villeneuve, who was quoted as saying that Warner Bros might just have killed the Dune franchise. As for Christopher Nolan, there is now concern and speculation that Warner Bros. might lose the acclaimed director who gave them such films as Inception and the three Batman movies starring Christian Bale. All that being said, there are also people who back Warner Bros, especially considering that the COVID-19 pandemic is limiting theater attendance anyway, with director Steven Soderbergh being among them. (Never mind the fact that Soderbergh signed a three-year deal with HBO back in January.)On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

0.80.6 6月喜迎这游戏从手游来看没得说,就像@Lesmiz说的那样,的确是实至名归的手游第一梯队甚至第零梯队;但手机上来说操作属实滞涩困难了点。
Female superheroes have been around almost as long as the genre itself, with Wonder Woman paving the way for a diverse group of characters as far back as the 1940s. On television, she also established a foothold alongside characters like The Mighty Isis and Electra Woman in the 1970s. Unfortunately, as superheroes disappeared from television in the 1980s, so too did these initial, beloved characters. With the big expansion of superhero television in the 21st Century, female superheroes returned, and it is nearly impossible to think of a series without a key superpowered woman in the cast. Granted, very few headline a series currently, there is only one female-led superhero show but their contributions often keep their shows running. But who are the best on television right now? And is it their abilities, life experience, or strength of will that makes them great? Here are seven of the greatest female superheroes on television right now who prove it is a combination of all three factors that sets them apart from the rest.Supergirl  Supergirl 90%(Photo by Jordon Nuttall/The CW)Debut in Comics: Action Comics #252Abilities: flight, super strength, super speed, invulnerability, heat vision, x-ray vision, super hearingCertainly the most powerful of the female superheroes on television, Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) also boasts the most diverse set of abilities. On a physical level, she can dish it out easily, but Kara’s most important power is often her sense of hope and empathy. She never wants to get into a brawl – in fact, she prefers to avoid it – and would rather make a foe her ally. This sometimes works out, as when Livewire (Brit Morgan) helped out on Kara’s mission to Fort Roz last year. And other times, as with season 3 nemesis Reign (Odette Annable), Kara s appeals may fail to warm an evil heart, which forces a fight. Nonetheless, Kara s opponents often mistake her hope as a weakness instead of the bedrock of her strengths.Syd Barrett  Legion 91%(Photo by Prashant Gupta/FX)Debut in Comics: n/aAbilities: body switchingLet’s face it, Syd (Rachel Keller) has not had an easy go of it on FX’s Legion. When we meet her, she lives in extreme isolation, thanks to her cruel mutant ability – any skin-to-skin contact will see her consciousness transferred to the body of the person touching her. Nonetheless, she manages to find some semblance of a life with the people at Summerland and David Haller (Dan Stevens). Then he disappears for a year. During that time, she learns to control her ability as the Summerland group ally with Division 3, the government agency previously engaged in hunting them. And once David resurfaces and she learns his role in the coming apocalypse, she resolves to either heal him or kill him. David escalates things by trying to restore their previous love affair and assaulting her, but despite the complete betrayal, Syd bounces back and rededicates herself to the one action guaranteed to save the world. That resiliency, especially in the world of Legion, is a superpower in its own right.Black Canary  Arrow 86%(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW Network)Debut in Comics: Flash Comics #86 (as Dinah Drake)Abilities: sonic cry, advanced combat trainingDinah Drake’s (Juliana Harkavy) sonic cry certainly came in handy when Team Arrow needed a new member to replace the deceased Black Canary, Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy). She also proved a worthy opponent to Laurel s villainous Earth-2 counterpart, Black Siren (also Cassidy). But even if she was not a meta, Dinah would certainly be worthy to stand alongside the team as an accomplished fighter. With her staff, she’s almost unstoppable. She also has superb strength of character, as exemplified by her willingness to work with Black Siren – now pretending to be the Earth-1 Laurel and operating as the Star City District Attorney – and even moving past her culpability in the death of Dinah’s ex-boyfriend Vincent (Johann Urb). That strength takes on many forms, even as recently as this week’s episode, in which she finally admitted to the team that she can no longer use her cry. Though reluctant, her willingness to share illustrates her continued growth and is yet another reason why she will continue to be the Canary long after Team Arrow disintegrates as noted in the 2040 flash-forwards.Polaris  The Gifted 79%(Photo by Ryan Green/Fox)Debut in Comics:The X-Men #49Abilities: magnetic manipulationSure, Lorna Dane (Emma Dumont) may have spent most of the second season of The Gifted allied with the very questionable Inner Circle, but her willingness to admit her mistake in this regard puts her back on the right side, even if she stayed away from the remaining Mutant Underground characters. From the series first moments, Lorna was portrayed as one of the most powerful mutants around, thanks to an ability that can stop bullets, open fences, and even bring down an entire airplane, killing all of its passengers. That last point certainly set up a heel-turn, but as the show’s second year progressed, Lorna saw the downside of her actions and the horrifying real intent of Inner Circle’s plan to create a mutant homeland. Nonetheless, she acknowledged her errors and resolved to make amends. That resiliency is part of what makes Lorna one of the most interesting characters on the show, and doubly so as she remains strong while combating a chronic mental illness. Should the show continue in the Disney era of X-Men properties, it will be interesting to see how she juggles the roles of hero and mother. She would probably say they are the same thing.Killer Frost  The Flash 89%(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Debut in Comics: Fury of Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #19 (as Caitlin Snow)Abilities: ice generation and manipulationThis is a strange one, as Killer Frost is traditionally a villain. But The Flash took her on a curious journey as viewers discovered she is a distinct personality from her host, Dr. Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) – one dedicated to protecting Caitlin above all other concerns. Nonetheless, the pull toward selfish acts and quick answers was strong (see her alliance with Savitar in season 3), but as she and Caitlin learned to share one body, Frost also learned empathy. And then, she was seemingly gone for a time, and the absence affected Caitlin and the fans more acutely than anyone could predict. She eventually resurfaced with a resolve to be more of a team player she s a far cry from the woman who walked away from Team Flash at the end of season 3. Meanwhile, in the current season, her powers prove uniquely effective against Cicada (Chris Klein) as she is immune to his power-dampening dagger. It s a good thing she decided to work with the group, otherwise their few successes against the meta serial killer would not have been possible.Elasti-Woman   Doom Patrol 97%(Photo by DC Universe)Debut in Comics: My Greatest Adventure #80 (as Elasti-Girl)Abilities: limited shape changing and mass exchangeRita Farr (April Bowlby) is a ways from admitting this to herself, but she has the strength to lead a superhero team even one as dysfunctional as a the Doom Patrol. On a purely physical level, she must have Supergirl levels of strength to maintain her human form. When out of control, she is a giant rolling mass capable of occupying an entire city block. Keeping that form in check requires tons of strength, to say nothing of mental fortitude. Sure, she still slips from time to time with so much of her power devoted to retaining her idealized shape, the slightest emotional upset can weaken her resolve but that’s the real challenge she faces in the first season of the show: accepting those mistakes as part of her path to becoming a strong and capable woman. Along the way, she might even figure out how to use her gelatinous form to stretch like her comic book counterpart. At that point, she will be more formidable than even Jane (Diane Guerrero) or Robotman (Brendan Fraser).Zari Tomaz   DC's Legends of Tomorrow 89%(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Debut in Comics: Shazam! #25 (as The Mighty Isis)Abilities: air manipulationWhen Zari (Tala Ashe) first joined the Waverider crew, she was sarcastic, reluctant to engage, and more of a hindrance to the mission than an asset. In short, she was a Legend in the making. She abused the ship’s food replication system to snack endlessly and played video games constantly in lieu of getting to know anybody. Nonetheless, she would also call out the other Legends for being slackers, and after getting caught in a time loop, she learned to care about them. She also began to involve herself in the mission, particularly once the group discovered the Air Totem that generates her abilities was tied to their opponent, the time demon Mallus. By the point the Legends found the other totems and unified them into a giant Cuddle Me Beebo doll to fight Mallus, she was definitely a member of the team. In the most recent season, Zari has continued to grow, taking on more responsibilities and even mentoring new recruit Charlie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers). Well, mentoring after a fashion. And while she continues to grow as a hero or as much of a hero as a Legend can be she still finds time to snack.Like this?

Space Force marks the highly-anticipated reunion of The Office alums Greg Daniels and Steve Carell. Carell, who co-created the series with Daniels, plays four-star General Mark R. Naird, who leads the newly-minted sixth branch of the U.S. Armed Services a concept directly inspired by Donald Trump s very-real announcement to have American boots back on the moon by 2024. John Malkovich s Dr. Adrian Mallory is Naird s unlikely partner, offering unwelcome scientific insight during every step of the mission. According to the first reviews of the series, the timely comedy struggles to connect with audiences and many of the jokes fall flat, but the show s two leads deliver the goods in bringing their characters to life. Here’s what critics are saying about Season 1 of Space Force:Steve Carell and John Malkovich have strong comedic chemistryBut where the show really strikes a chord is in the more heartfelt, charming moments – particularly between Carrell’s regimented veteran Naird and Malkovich’s stubborn head scientist Dr. Adrian Mallory. —Nicola Austin, We Have a HulkCarell remains likable and charismatic, even if his gravelly voice as Mark sounds a bit forced, and he and Malkovich (underrated for his comedic abilities) have entertaining chemistry. — Josh Bell, CBRAnd the show comes to life most when we get to watch Carell and Malkovich go head-to-head as military determination clashes with scientific limitations. — Nola Ojomu, MetroTogether, Carell and Malkovich forge a charismatic pair that could carry even more episodes than they already do, while Malkovich’s Dr. Mallory could certainly stand for more development on his own. — Ben Travers, IndieWireCarell and Malkovich make a great comedic duo! — Grace Randolph, Beyond the Trailer(Photo by Aaron Epstein/Netflix)Carell does his best to distance himself from Michael ScottCarell is good playing Naird as a straight-laced military man, who rigidly adheres to his principles even when they make him utterly depressed. After a long day on the job, he s a good dad, who makes time to help his daughter with her math homework.— Jonathan W. Hickman, The Newnan Times-HeraldMark Naird isn’t exactly Michael Scott 2.0. He has a wife, Maggie (Lisa Kudrow in a part-time role), a teenage daughter, Erin (Diana Silvers), and is more aggressive and confident than Michael ever was. He’s a plausibly orthodox military man; when Maggie complains that he’s too rigid in his thinking, he insists, “I can be flexible if I’m ordered to be.” But the way Naird stalks through most of the episodes as a defiantly ignorant, periodically bigoted a hole feels unfortunately very reminiscent of that first Office season when Michael was unbearable. — Alan Sepinwall, Rolling StoneCarrell plays General Mark R. Naird like a puffed-up, military-issue Michael Scott complete with earnest love for his workmates and an inability to recognise the error of his ways until it s too late. —Brian Lloyd, entertainment.ieUnfortunately, the jokes fail to connect But it might be easier to listen to than most of the jokes. Space Force is inexplicably unfunny, a black hole for laughter, with stretches of bombs lasting minutes, not just because the gags rarely work, but because there aren t that many jokes in the first place. It feels like the first draft of a comedy before the jokes were put in. — Tim Surette, TV GuideThe jokes themselves are also scarce, and when they do show up, they can be painfully all over the place. — Sean Price, The SpoolDaniels and Carell have failed to give their series any discernible point of view, delivering instead an innocuous and startlingly unfunny sitcom about military bureaucracy. — Kristen Baldwin, EWPut a different way, for Space Force to work, Carell and Daniels — as capable a pair of satirists as we have (see The Office) — would need to come with their humorous focus and targets incredibly well honed. Through the first season, despite fitful highlights, that just isn t there. — Daniel Fienberg, THRHere’s a comedy for people either desperate for new Office content, or who still find “covfefe” funny. —Blake Goble, Consequence of Sound(Photo by Aaron Epstein/Netflix)Political satire or surreal comedy — the show struggles to find its toneAt certain points it feels like biting satire, others complete farce. Sometimes the show is super silly and surreal, and other times it feels like a straight comedy. That inconsistent tone makes it so that you never know what you’re watching or what you’ll get from scene to scene, episode to episode. — Michael Walsh, NerdistThe series, of course, isn’t going to come without having some contemporary references. On the political side, there are clear-as-day references to Senator Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Ortez. Though for whatever reason, the Schumer-esque character is a congressman rather than a senator. Instead of AOC, we have AYC (Ginger Gonzaga) aka Angry Young Congresswoman.— Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesAdmittedly, the parodies are a little too on-the-nose at times, removing the suspension of reality some might expect while they put on a movie or TV series. Even then, that s something that speaks volumes to the world we live in, rather than to the quality of the programming itself. — Adam Barnhardt, Comic BookIts pieces of political satire are both too literal (as when a young liberal congresswoman named “Anabela Ysidro-Campos,” played by Ginger Gonzaga, gives Space Force’s hell in a hearing that evokes an SNL cold open) and too dated (Mark’s annoying communications manager, played by Ben Schwartz, is “Tony Scarapiducci,” or more colloquially, “F Tony” as in “F Jerry,” I guess?). — Caroline Framke, VarietyThe ensemble cast is spectacularAnd their team is ensemble gold: Don Lake as Naird s overly eager-to-please assistant, Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley) as Mallory s unflappable No. 2 and Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as the smarmiest of media managers. [ ] Maybe the best reason to enlist in Space Force: the posthumous performance of Fred Willard in one of his last TV roles as Naird s lovingly befuddled dad, a grace note for an earnestly amusing show that isn t afraid to wear its heart on its star-spangled sleeve. — Matt Roush, TV InsiderBen Schwartz , whom many will remember for his cheeky Jean-Ralphio in Parks and Recreation, is still a comic relief at all times. — Mikel Zorrilla, EspinofOh, and every single time the Armed Forces 4-Star Generals meet, you are sure to be giggling in your seat. It is comprised of greats like Jane Lynch and Patrick Warburton and the dry humor is basically a masterpiece. Trust me. Whenever they showed the room, I knew it was about to be a hilarious scene.I have to mention others like Tawny Newsome, Fred Willard (RIP), and Jimmy O. Yang. Each of them bring their own elements to the show. You know you have a good show on your hands when the supporting characters make you laugh just as hard as the main characters. In fact, Steve Carell almost plays the straight man in this one — almost. — Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekySpace Force hol
Ryan FujitaniThe cult classic horror franchise Candyman returns in 2020, with the Jordan Peele-produced, Nia DaCosta (Little Woods)-directed movie having just dropped its first teaser trailer this week. Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, Watchmen), Teyonah Parris (If Beale Street Could Talk), and original franchise star Tony Todd, Candyman is slated for release on June 12. Originally rumored to be a remake, it’s now being called a “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 original. Here’s what we know so far.It s Definitely a Sequel, Not a RebootWhen the idea of revisiting Candyman was first floated, it was assumed that the new version would be a straight remake – even by original star Tony Todd. The actor went so far as to give his blessing to the new crew and say his goodbyes to Candyman on Twitter. It turns out rumors of a new actor wielding the honey-coated hook were premature (at one point, Peele’s Get Out star Lakeith Stanfield was rumored to be taking over the role). Peele and DaCosta are positioning the new movie as a direct sequel to the 1992 film.Star Abdul-Mateen II is playing grown-up Anthony McCoy, the baby kidnapped and used as bait by Candyman in the original film (Stanfield was rumored to be up for this role as well). Original star Vanessa Williams also reprises her role of Anthony’s mother, Anne-Marie McCoy.Virginia Madsen Is Not Back, But Helen Is(Photo by TriStar Pictures)At the end of the 1992 Candyman (spoiler alert), Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) – the graduate student studying urban legends who revives the ghostly killer – dies from burns she receives when Candyman attempts to immolate the residents of the Cabrini-Green public housing project where the film is set. The final scene shows her distraught husband Trevor (Xander Berkeley) saying her name 5 times in front of a mirror, inviting a scarred Helen to appear and murder him with a hook.Although Madsen is not returning for the sequel, the character of Helen Lyle is, this time played by Cassie Kramer. Is she an apparition? Were the events at the end of the original some kind of strange dream sequence? Or will the new film incorporate flashbacks to the past? We’ll have to wait and see.Candyman Has New Abilities(Photo by Universal Pictures)The ending of the original played on a key theme in the work of author Clive Barker – that of the protagonist becoming the thing they are running from or tracking down (see also: Nightbreed and The Midnight Meat Train) – as the film ends with Helen literally becoming a new “Candywoman.” The new trailer seems to hint that Candyman has upped his game a bit. Rather than appear as a physical being, he seems to exist only in reflections and shadows, and judging from the shot where Abdul-Mateen II sees himself as Candyman in a mirror, Anthony McCoy doesn’t appear to become a Candyman surrogate like Helen, but actually the man himself.Gentrification Is a Key ThemeRyan FujitaniThe final building of what once comprised the Cabrini-Green housing project on Chicago’s North Side was demolished in 2011. Sandwiched between two wealthy Chicago neighborhoods, Lincoln Park and the Gold Coast, Cabrini-Green had always butted up against encroaching gentrification. The attempt to pave over a dark past with trendy cafes and art galleries seems to be a main theme for the new film, which takes place in a now-gentrified neighborhood where Cabrini-Green once stood.Peele has been very upfront about maintaining the tensions of race and class in the new film. “The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre,” he said in a statement released after the film was announced. “Alongside Night of the Living Dead, Candyman was a major inspiration for me as filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the Candyman canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend.”So Is Toxic Fandom(Photo by TriStar Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Ian Cooper, creative director at Jordan Peele’s production company Monkeypaw, has hinted that entitled fandom will be another subtle thread in the new story. Speaking to Deadline, Cooper said, “We talk a lot about fans and the idea of appeasing fans and when you do that and how do you do that and when do you not do that. I think my issue with fandom is that it’s really problematic. It’s probably the most problematic thing facing the genre.” He went on to indicate how this may come into play in Candyman.“I think what we’re trying to do with Candyman is both be mischievous in how we address the relationship to the first film but also be very satisfying.”There Will Be Familiar MusicLike the use of a modified version of The Luniz s I Got Five on It in Us, one of the best parts of the new teaser – as indicated by the #SayMyName hashtag trending on Twitter minutes after it dropped – was the way Destiny’s Child’s 1999 hit “Say My Name” was remixed with composer Philip Glass’ original score for the first Candyman.Glass released a new recording of the Candyman score in 2016, but it’s unlikely the 83-year-old will have an active role in the new film. Producer Michael Werner Maas is credited as providing the trailer music, and will likely be involved in remixing at least parts of Glass’ score for inclusion in the new film. There Will Be Nods to the Original Story(Photo by Universal Pictures)As a child in Liverpool, England, the four-year-old soon-to-be-horror author Barker was given some kindly words of advice by his dear, sweet old Nana that would stay with him for the rest of his life. My grandmother warned me, I remember, about going into public toilets because there were men who went around in public toilets and cut the genitals off little boys. This was difficult for a four-year-old to take in, Barker recalls in the making-of documentary Sweets to the Sweet. It terrified the wits out of me. That was the origin of Candyman. Candyman would take the lead in Barker s 1984 short story The Forbidden, which would in turn inspire screenwriter Bernard Rose to take the story of a hook-handed urban legend haunting a rundown housing estate in downtrodden, industrial 1970s Liverpool and re-set it within the walls of the equally troubled Cabrini-Green housing project outside Chicago in the 1990s.The original publication (in a collection called Books of Blood) featured haunting illustrations from artist John Stewart, which appear to get a visual shout-out via some of the graffiti glimpsed in the new trailer. It Doesn t Have a High Bar to Cross, Financially Speaking(Photo by Universal Pictures)Candyman wasn’t a monster box office success in 1992 (it made about .8 million in its domestic release), but it did well enough to earn a theatrically released sequel in 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (29%), which only grossed .9 million. The final entry was a forgettable 1999 straight-to-video installment called Candyman: Day of the Dead (10%). Despite that, the original film, which stands at 75% on the Tomatometer, and the character himself have become iconic in their own right, so while the new film could easily best the box office performance of its predecessors, it will still have to pass muster with adoring horror buffs who may be prone to eye the new project with, at best, cautious optimism.Candyman opens on August 27, 2021.

The Flash s sixth season premiere feels like a soft reboot of sorts: Barry’s (Grant Gustin) suit is a little brighter, Cisco’s (Carlos Valdes) smile is a little wider and the drama is — well, it is still the drama of The Flash, so Barry and Iris (Candice Patton) are still grieving the erasure of their daughter Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) from the timeline. But beyond exploring the West-Allen’s grief, The Flash is a different show thanks to new executive producer and showrunner Eric Wallace. A veteran of genre TV (Eureka, Teen Wolf) and comic books (DC’s Mister Terrific), he came to the show with a distinct plan.“Usually one of about two or three things happen in the sixth season of a hit show,” he said when he spoke to Rotten Tomatoes and other reporters ahead of season 6 s October 8 premiere. The first option? “Snoozeville — and it goes into cruise mode. No one really cares, but you kind of watch it because it s habit.” Another key possibility: “Crash and burn,” leading the viewer to think, “Oh my! That used to be my favorite show, and I can t stand it anymore.”The third option is, of course, reinvention.“I m trying very hard, my staff s trying very hard, the cast, the crew, everybody, to reward all of the fans who have been watching for five years. And as a thank you, we re going to try and not give them the exact same thing that they ve gotten for five years,” he explained. “As a reward, we re trying some new things.”Those new things are poised to make The Flash a different show from what it was. Here are just a few ways Wallace plans to give the series a new energy. The Graphic Novel Format(Photo by The CW)The Flash is known for its season-long plots and season-long villains. It was absolutely thrilling in the first couple of seasons — particularly in the first year with the mystery of the Reverse-Flash — but some of the villains definitely overstayed their welcome in subsequent seasons. Wallace plans to combat that fatigue by breaking season 6 into two major stories, or, as he put it in honor of his days in comics, “graphic novels. “It s a self-contained story. It s only eight episodes,” he explained of the first half. The story will revolve around Ramsey Rosso (Sendhil Ramamurthy), a more recent villain from the comics also known as Bloodwork. He has a specific plan for metahuman powers that differs in a very different way from the speedster villains or The Thinker, but it also relates directly to Barry s predicament ahead of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. And thanks to the way Wallace and his writers plotted the story, Bloodwork “burns very hot” as his story wraps up in just ahead of the Crisis event.“By the time we get to [episode] 603 [and] 604, we re in cuckoo-town, essentially,” Wallace said. The change in momentum is a major departure for the series. Usually, the fourth episode of the year is more of a standalone story and the eighth puts the season-long villain on pause so that Team Flash can join the annual Arrowverse crossover. Wallace noted the pace of previous seasons was part of the fun” of a 22-episode season, but at the same time, he added, “sometimes me and my wife and my child will watch and go, ‘Dude, shouldn t you have caught [the villain] by now? It s episode 17.’”The attempt to pick up the pace of the overarching plot means the show will feel more serialized than ever before.“A lot of the episodes — especially two, three, and four — they end and [the next] picks up one second later because I want the immediacy that audiences get when they re watching a streaming show, and they re watching something that s eight or 10 episodes,” Wallace said. “That s our competition, quite frankly. I want that same immediacy brought to The CW.”And after Bloodwork’s story is wrapped up?“We go to [“Crisis on Infinite Earths”], and then starting in [episode] 610, it s a brand new story — graphic novel No. 2,” Wallace said. The details of the second story are still under wraps, but there s a possibility that Keiynan Lonsdale will return as Wally West for an episode or two — provided schedules sync up, of course. Additionally, the second half of the season will see the introduction of Sue Dearbon, Ralph Dibny’s (Hartley Sawyer) eventual wife in the comics.New Cases Of The Week(Photo by Sergei Bachlakov/The CW)Another longstanding Flash tradition is the metahuman criminal of the week, which introduced characters including The Shade, Trajectory, and the Turtle. Some would return for a follow-up or graduate to the Rogues tier like Captain Cold and Heat Wave, but for the most part, they served the same function as Smallville’s or The X-Files’s “monster of the week” plot lines. And in almost all cases, these guest characters used their abilities to commit crimes.Though Wallace wanted to honor the old of the first five seasons, he said it was important to find new ways for Team Flash to encounter metas. One debuts in the Tuesday night premiere — keep a steely eye out for some free-range dark matter — while another new method appears the week after. It is bearing so much fruit, he teased. It s a new way to get stories in because it s based in character. Cisco’s Relationship Will Actually Matter(Photo by Jeff Weddell/The CW)In the past, Cisco’s relationships have been short-lived (remember Kendra Saunders?) or little more than joke fodder (the entirety of his time with Earth-19 s Gypsy). But this time, his relationship with photographer Kamilla Hwang (Victoria Park) will be a substantial part of Cisco’s story across both halves of season 6. And though Wallace said some of the other relationships on the show will be tested through crises and “Crisis,” Cisco and Kamilla will be “just fine.”“That s one of the themes of his season arc that plays over all 22 episodes, Wallace said. Can you be happy being human? Can you be happy not being meta? Can you be happy not saving the world every week?”For Cisco, those questions pose a struggle as he tries to become a person who can punch out at 5 p.m. and “let The Flash handle everything from 5:01 to 8:59 [in the morning].” And from Wallace’s comments, it seems Kamilla will be instrumental in Cisco’s new perception of his work/life balance.Wallace added that characters like Cisco may get the focus of episodes more often: Look for that because it s happening. We have such a talented cast. Let s use them.”A Stronger Scientific Foundation(Photo by Jeff Weddell/The CW)While the “Speed Force” powering Barry is an element of absolute science fantasy, Wallace hopes to give other concepts on the show a more concrete backing in actual current science.“Science is my friend,” he said. “And I like to [use a] Stephen King rule of writing: You come up with the crazy idea, and then find the facts to support it.”Of course, those facts lead to explanations Wallace and his team have to whittle down to the bare essentials both for brevity — there are only so many seconds to devote to an explanation of a black hole, for example — and to the keep the momentum of a given episode alive.“It is a balancing act, but I do like to put as much real science into the stories as possible because there might be young people watching this going, ‘I want to be a scientist like Kaitlin [or] ‘I want to be a scientist like Cisco,’” Wallace said. “And I want them to maybe ask, ‘What is temporal mechanics?’ And then they go Google it. Suddenly maybe we have one more scientist in the world. That s really awesome.”Placing Iris In A Journalistic Context(Photo by Katie Yu/The CW)From the moment her dissertation went missing in the pilot episode, Iris’ relationship to journalism has vacillated across the seasons. She s been a reporter at the Central City Picture News, the full-time leader of Team Flash, and founder of the Central City Citizen, but her career ends up falling away if it does not help the season-long plot. Wallace said the current plan, which began last season with the Citizen’s founding, is to establish her as major journalistic presence in town.“We have very urgently done that this season,” he said. Kamilla works as a Citizen photographer, and a new staffer will be introduced very soon. A further expansion of the paper will depend on the available budget for the second half of the season. “[It] might be a small staff at first, but it s very much about seeing her take charge of what we refer to as Team Citizen, and they will appear, and they will be getting into trouble, especially in the back half of our show.”Wallace also discussed some key character changes on the horizon that reflect his overall vision of the show (and are too spoilery to include here). Though he may be changing the pace — and some other aspects — The Flash is still a show about science heroes using their impossible knowledge and abilities to hold back the tide of chaos. The Flash season 6 premieres Tuesday, October 8 at 8 p.m. on The CW.Like this? Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes. [I chose this one] because of Gena, because I watched it when my mind was first opened up to what cinema could be when I was a young actress starting out and discovering the scope of film. Everything that Gena does in this, as well as in A Woman under the Influence, the way that it explores femininity and masculinity and the devastating edges of masculinity, as well as so many colors that a woman can be – her fierceness, her devastation, her heartbreak, her going mad. And then to understand a film could be shot in someone s house, that you could just do this – you could find a way to carve your own path away from prescribed studio roles. So, I chose this for the whole package. And I had the honor of working with Nick [Cassavetes, son of John and Gena] and Gena in a film that Nick directed and I saw that it was a completely different way of working than I had ever been exposed to. The collaboration between all the departments and how we were all… you hear it a lot, “we re like a family,” but in that case, it really was. Everyone was together. The relationship, for example, between me and the set designer was extremely close because Nick wanted it that way. He said, “Well, this is your character. Where would you live? Let s all do this all together.” So that makes for a more relaxed performance and it s just more fun.Opening Night is also important to me because it s about the theater. Those scenes where she s backstage and about to go on, or the scenes in the rehearsal room, but particularly when she s about to go on stage, that visceral thrill and terror, the way he catches it… theater is my heart so it combines a lot of my loves in that film.
