(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)J.J. Abrams and Stephen King didn t actually work together until 2016, when Abrams signed on to executive produce the Hulu adaptation of the author s alternate history time travel novel 11.22.63. But it was a partnership that was clearly meant to be: the literary captain of the supernatural and horror joining forces with TV and film s leading purveyor of grounded sci-fi was a match made if not in heaven, then in some parallel universe or dream world. After collaborating again on the King anthology series Castle Rock, the duo have set up shop at a different stre This August, Rotten Tomatoes turns 21 and to mark the occasion we’re celebrating the 21 Most Memorable Moments from the movies over the last 21 years. For this special video series, which we’ve been publishing over the last four months, we spoke to the actors and filmmakers who made those moments happen, revealing behind-the-scenes details about how the moments came to be and diving deep into why they’ve stuck with us for so long. You’ll find big ’90s twists – yep, he sees dead people – as well as super-recent cliffhangers, like Thanos’s universe-halving Snap. There are laughs (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Elf, Bridesmaids) and romance (The Notebook, Spider-Man) and more than a few scares (The Blair Witch Project, 28 Days Later…). But which moment is the single most memorable of the last 21 years? Well, that’s where you come in. We’re asking you to watch the below videos and then vote on your favorite movie moment of the last two decades (and a bit).Voting is open now and runs until midnight Friday August 16 and we will announce the winner on August 19. Fans get a single vote – so choose wisely – and moments are listed in the order they were published over the past few months, most often to tie in with anniversaries and relevant occasions.Take me to the voting!“Remember Me!?” from Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) 97%Director George Miller: “It’s a moment by the way, I think, is available only to her. I don’t think any other character could have done it. I remember the line. I remember Charlize on that day said that she wanted to say the line. It wasn’t a written line. She said, ‘Look, I feel like I really want to say it. OK by you?’ I said, ‘Great.’ It just hit a sweet spot in amongst that action, and it was a little pause before the brutality of the moment and the continuation of the action that was to come.”Read director George Miller’s full interview about the “Remember me!?” moment. The Snap from Avengers: Infinity War (2018) 85%Co-director Joe Russo: “Anth and I, through our entire experience at Marvel, always tried to make very disruptive choices with each film. The end of Winter Solider, good guys and the bad guys, we flip everything on its head. In Civil War we divorce the Avengers. With Infinity War we knew we wanted to make a strong narrative choice. There s an adage where you write yourself into a corner, and you try to figure out how to get out. That usually creates really dramatic moments for the audience. There s no bigger way to write ourselves into a corner than killing half the characters.”Read directors Joe and Anthony Russo s full interview about the moment Thanos devastates the universe.Satine s Entrance from Moulin Rouge (2001) 76%Director Baz Luhrmann: “I thought, wouldn t it be great if we put her in a circus trapeze and we did a trapeze number, but we ll have to have a stunt person. But Nicole being Nicole was like, ‘No way.’ So she trained with a circus person for a good, I would say, two weeks to do that number and when you see her swing around that s her. It s her all the way through that footage. She s on the trapeze, she s being swung around, she comes down, she falls into all those guys. So she was 100% stunt-free on that moment.”Read director Baz Luhrmann and production and costume designer Catherine Martin s full interview about Satine s big moment. The Joker from The Dark Knight (2008) 94%Makeup artist John Caglione Jr.: “Heath [Ledger] was great in the chair. Special actors like Heath – and my experience with Al Pacino over the years – these actors help you relax so that you can bring your game… I always got the feeling that [Heath] had already worked it out in his head, from what I remember. He knew where he was going. Early on, in first meeting Heath and playing around with the makeup, he already kind of had it all figured out. It was my job to just basically gild the lily and try to catch up with him, really. That s what I felt.”Read makeup artist John Caglione Jr. and marketing company 42 Entertainment CEO Susan Bonds  full interview about this iconic take on the Joker.Heather s Confessional from The Blair Witch Project (1999) 86%Co-writer and co-director Eduardo Sánchez: “The direction was: You re not going to make it out of here. This is like an internal monologue. We were directing these actors to almost be like their conscience speaking to them. For Heather, it s like, ‘You re responsible for this. You re the one who brought them out here. You didn t heed the warnings. You knew this is dangerous and you brought these guys out here. Say your goodbyes. If you want to apologize to people, apologize to people, just basically say goodbye. We called it a confessional, your last confessional before you re going. You re not going to get out, and hopefully, somebody will find these tapes and will be able to tell your story, but tell your mom goodbye, and tell your family goodbye.”Read writer-directors Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick s full interview about Heather s confessional. The Upside-Down Kiss from Spider-Man (2002) 90%Director Sam Raimi: In the rain while he was doing the scene, I remember, he was slightly drowning because he couldn’t wipe his nose and the water was falling down into his upside-down nose, into his nostrils. So he was kinda drowning, and the only way he could breathe was through his mouth. It doesn’t look un-pleasurable, but I think it must’ve been.”Read Sam Raimi and stunt coordinator Jeff Habberstad s full interview about the upside-down kiss.London is Deserted from 28 Days Later (2002) 87%Director Danny Boyle:  One of the technical advantages of using these smaller cameras is that you could shoot a location, not multiple times, but you could shoot it from multiple viewpoints simultaneously. Cillian was in no rush, he could just walk across. But you don’t get much time at these locations free of people even at four o’clock in the morning when we shot. So what happened was we hired a lot of students, because they’re cheap, to be our traffic marshals.”Read Danny Boyle s full interview about creating an eerily deserted London for the opening moments.A Kiss in the Rain from The Notebook (2004) 53%Director Nick Cassavetes:  There was something built up between these two kids, and it has nothing to do with directing. Because when we turned the cameras on, the scene was like: He s mad at her, she s mad at him, and then he says that he wrote her every day, and that s the key that unlocks the door. And when that door got unlocked, I didn t need to direct nothing. They wound up together for many years after the movie, which is…I don t know if I m proud of it, but I think it s fantastic that they found each other like that. And I think that was the moment, because they weren t together before that kiss. But they were together after that kiss, so maybe that was one of the deciding moments.”Read Nick Cassavetes full interview about the kiss in the rain moment.Crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge from Selma (2014) 99%Representative John Lewis:  I truly believe that Oprah, Ava, and the staff working on the film sought my involvement because they knew my history. Selma represented an attempt to redeem the soul of America, to help us move closer to the participation of all people in the political process. This film can educate and inform the mind of hundreds and thousands of young people around America and around the world.”Read Representative John Lewis and actor Stephan James s full interview about the final bridge-crossing moment. Cars don t fly! from Furious 7 (2015) 82%Actor Vin Diesel:  And it was that moment where we realized that Fast and Furious didn’t need to be restricted in any way. That we were so thorough about story and character, and it’s so much a tale of brotherhood and family, right, that we were allowed these kind of outrageous and fantasy-filled moments, and flying through the air was playing to that. Flying from building to building was playing to that. It was one of those solutions to the riddle, or answers to the riddle, How do we one-up the spectacle of each film? ”Read Vin Diesel s full interview about the skyscraper-jump moment.Juan teaches Chiron to Swim in Moonlight (2016) 98%Cinematographer James Laxton:  When Barry alerted us to the storm approaching, we gathered our equipment together as quickly as possible, ran out into the water, and in some respects… I don t want to say improvised, because what is in the script is on camera, if not in the exact way it was depicted. But we had a lot more shots in our shot list, and [were going to be] much more organized about capturing it. We had to really get out there and let Mahershala as Juan guide this young man, and [have] me out in the water, as well, trying to capture this swimming lesson as it came. It [was shot] almost like a documentary, less so like a film in some respects. Sometimes your reaction to moments is as good as a well detailed plan might be. Sometimes it s even better.”Read James Laxton s full interview about the swimming lesson moment.Carl and Ellie in the Opening of Up (2009) 98%Director Pete Docter:  There’s one moment in that montage where Ellie has to go to the doctor and it’s implied that they can’t have children for whatever reason. That raised some eyebrows even here at work as we were developing the film. So, we did experiment with taking it out. And we thought, ‘Well, maybe [the sequence] could still work [without it] because there’s some really charming stuff.’ But the strange thing was, not only did we not feel the emotion as strongly in that one little sequence, but as we watched the rest of the film the whole film lost a little bit. I can’t really fully explain that other than to say it was a real dark, low moment for them that I think made that relationship feel more real. The sort of pain and loss of that situation bonded those characters together and made you empathize more with them. Read Pete Docter s full interview about Up s opening sequence.Gollum Talks to Smeagol from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) 95%Actor Andy Serkis:  I d never considered myself a voice actor, just a regular actor, and I had to kind of think my way into it. I started to work on this notion that he s called Gollum because of the way he sounds – and what would make his voice sound like that? I started to think about constriction of the throat, and as I was doing that, I was actually fortunate enough to witness my cat throwing up a fur ball. It suddenly gave me this idea that the whole physicality of the role would be determined by this force within, which is kind of built out of guilt and torment – this involuntary physical action is what caused this sound coming out of his mouth. The cat throwing up a fur ball is actually what generated the idea for this involuntary spewing out of words. Read Andy Serkis s full interview about the Gollum-Smeagol moment. The Bridesmaids get Food Poisoning from Bridesmaids (2011) 90%Co-Writer Annie Mumolo:  We [originally] had a fantasy sequence where they go into the dress shop, and Kristen s character tries on this dress and she has this fantasy that when she wears this dress, she s all of a sudden in a castle. And all the men at the wedding are fawning over her. There s so many of them wanting her so badly [that] just to escape from the castle she goes running out into this field and runs into the forest. And she naturally sees Christian Bale there, who’s chopping wood without a shirt on. And they end up on a bearskin rug, and he was combing her hair, and it was this expansive sequence of her little love affair with Christian Bale. In the meantime, [back in the real world] Helen gets the women to get the dress she wants because Annie is caught up in her fantasy. So that was the original [scene]. And then I think Judd said at one point we ll never get Christian Bale to do this. And then we tried to put in Matt Damon and then we re like, As if we re going to get Matt Damon to do this.’ He was concerned we weren t going to get anybody to do it. And also he felt it needed harder comedy there, rather than what we had. So, we sadly let that go. We did not want to let that go. We loved that sequence. 2.
What it is: This hit dramedy with critics and audiences alike from creators Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft follows a teen quartet played by relative newcomers Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, and Diego Tinoco as they navigate high school hallways set in a very real inner-city world. Why you should watch it: What’s groundbreaking about On My Block is its articulation of everyday coming-of-age hiccups (first loves, first heartbreaks, shifting friendships, growing parental pains, party culture, and more) through the lens of a world not often depicted on screen. With a talented and diverse young cast and set in the heart of inner-city Los Angeles, the series’ transports its audience to the confined intimacy of a single American block and all that entails. Its fourth and final season premieres March 11 on Netflix.Where to watch: NetflixCommitment: Approx. 15 hours (for the first three seasons)

(Photo by Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic)Another year, another Academy Awards – but this was one we don t think we ll be getting over any time soon. The 92nd Academy Awards will go down in the history books, with Bong Joon-ho s Parasite becoming the first ever foreign-language movie to win Best Picture. And while Parasite s four wins were definitely major highlights of the host-free ceremony – not just because of Joon-ho s promises to get royally wasted after the event – they weren t the only big moments in a night that was marked by some genuinely funny presenters, megastar wins, and a feeling that the right people and movies were winning in the right categories.Recommended: The Full List of 2020 Oscar Winners and NominationsRecommended: The 2020 Oscars Red Carpet GalleryRecommended: The 2020 Best Picture Nominees, Ranked by TomatometerRecommended: All the Winners of the Golden Tomato AwardsThe moments began before the ceremony itself, with Natalie Portman s Dior cape making one of the few political statements of the night (with the exception of Brad Pitt s first remarks upon accepting his award and Joaquin Phoenix s speech, this was a fairly politics-lite Oscars). And then they kept coming thick and fast: incredible music performances, a superhero super team, and shock wins.Check out our pick of the best moments of the 92nd Academy Awards below, and let us know what you thought of the show in the comments below. Natalia Portman Makes A Statement With Her Cape Full of Female Directors(Photo by Steve Granitz/WireImage) Those men might have been the ones congratulated by Issa Rae when the Best Director contenders were announced on nominations morning, but it was a group of talented ladies that was celebrated in a very special way on the red carpet on Oscars night. Natalie Portman arrived wearing a Dior cape that was embroidered with the names of a number of female directors who were snubbed by the Academy. Among those honored in Portman s gold stitching: The Farewell director Lulu Wang, Little Women director Greta Gerwig, Atlantics director Mati Diop, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood director Marielle Heller, Portrait of a Lady On Fire director Céline Sciamma, and Honey Boy director Alma Har el.Janelle Monáe Kicks Things Off With Mr. Rogers and Dancing DoppelgängersNo host doesn’t mean no killer opening musical number. The 2020 Oscars kicked off with Janelle Monáe – joined for a spell by Billy Porter – paying tribute to some of the year’s best films. Monáe entered the stage on a Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood-like set, pulled on a red cardigan, and sang “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”, before transitioning to her hit “Come Alive (The War of the Roses) surrounded by dancers dressed as the Joker, Queen and Slim, Midsommar cultists, and other characters from the year’s movies. Most awkward moment: Monáe trying to get audience members like Leo and Kathy Bates to sing into her mic. Best moments: The awesome finale and the sight of a family of Us doppelgängers dancing on the Oscars stage.Brad Pitt Tears Up As He Reflects On his Career, Accepting His Award for Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%Brad Pitt was a lock for Best Supporting Actor leading into the night: The only question was – after a string of delightful acceptance speeches during the season – what would he say when he won? Pitt delivered, and then some, with a heartfelt speech in which he dedicated his win to his kids, celebrated his Once Upon A Time In Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino (“one of a kind”), and paid tribute to his co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio, whom he hugged on his way to the stage. Reflecting on his own journey through the industry, from Thelma and Louise to now, Pitt told the room, “Once upon a time in Hollywood – ain’t that the truth.”Animated Short Hair Love Makes History as Director Matthew A. Cherry Salutes Kobe Bryant“Representation matters deeply, especially in cartoons,” said Hair Love producer Karen Rupert Toliver as she accepted the award for Best Short Film (Animated) and became the first Black woman ever to win an Oscar in any animation category. Toliver was joined on stage by writer, director, and producer of Hair Love, Matthew A. Cherry, who said he made the film to “normalize Black hair” and drew the crowd’s attention California’s CROWN Act, which would protect against discrimination based on hairstyling. Cherry, a former NFL player, dedicated the win to the late Kobe Bryant, saying, “May we all have a second act as great as his was.”Screenplay Surprises: Parasite (2019) 98% and Jojo Rabbit (2019) 80% Win Big Against the Big GunsSome pundits – ahem, us – predicted these two wins, but safer money had Quentin Tarantino winning Best Original Screenplay for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and Best Adapted Screenplay going to Greta Gerwig for Little Women. When Bong Joon-ho and Han Jin-won were announced as winners for Original Screenplay, the room erupted, with stars like Sandra Oh leaping to their feet to celebrate Parasite’s first win of the night. Joon-ho could barely contain his excitement, beaming as he stared at his award as if to say, “Is this really happening?”. Waititi dedicated his win to his mom – or, for Waititi, who signed off with the Maori greeting of “kia ora,” his mum – who introduced him to the book on which Jojo Rabbit was based, Caging Skies.MAYA RUDOLPH and Kristen Wiig Show Why They Should be the Next Oscar Hosts Though Billie Eilish Might not AgreeBy far the best presenters of the evening – and let’s be honest, perhaps of any awards show we’ve seen lately – were Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig, who presented the awards for Production Design and Costume Design. They kicked things off with a bit in which they said they were too upset, too steamed, to carry out their duties, before revealing they were acting! Why? To show the likes of Scorsese and Tarantino that they had the range to be cast in their films, of course: “We just wanted them to know we do more than comedy.” In their intro to the costume award, they then sang a medley of clothes-related tunes that ranged from “Vogue” and “Lady in Red” to Sisqo’s “Thong Song.” Hilarious. (The only person who wasn’t into it seemed to be singer Billie Eilish.)Laura Dern Wins First Oscar for Marriage Story (2019) 94% and Pays Tribute to Her ParentsIf it is hard to believe that three-time nominee Laura Dern hadn’t won an Oscar before tonight, it’s even harder to believe that she is now the first and only Oscar winner in her family – a family in which dad is Bruce Dern and mom is Diane Ladd. With an emotional Ladd watching on, Dern thanked the Academy for “the best birthday present ever” and saluted her mom and dad. “Some say never meet your heroes,” Dern said, “but I say if you’re really blessed, you get them as your parents.”Eminem Shows Up To Perform Lose Yourself, Because… Music?!(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)Following a fairly earnest montage tribute to the power of songs in film introduced by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who was himself introduced by Anthony Ramos), Eminem took the stage for a room-shaking – and heavily censored – performance of “Lose Yourself.” The song, featured in 8 Mile, won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2003, making Eminem the first hip hop artist to win an Academy Award. Why exactly the song was performed tonight, though, remains something of a mystery. Still, the crowd got into it, with the likes of Kelly Marie Tran and Gal Gadot moving and mouthing along. The same could not be said for Martin Scorsese, who appeared to find the song a little, er, sleepy.Cynthia Erivo Takes the Dolby Theatre to ChurchNot much to say about this: Just watch and listen as Cynthia Erivo performs the Oscar-nominated Stand Up from Harriet. The performance was followed in the commercial break by a well-timed trailer for Genius: Aretha, the upcoming History event in which Erivo plays Aretha Franklin. The Cats Cast Shows They Have a Sense of HumorWearing two costumes that perhaps the filmmakers should have gone with for the actual film, Cats co-stars Rebel Wilson and James Corden presented the award for Best Visual Effects. As cast members of the motion picture Cats, said Wilson, nobody more than us understands the importance of good visual effects. You ll remember that Cats went into theaters with its own effects unfinished.Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, and Ripley UniteGal Gadot, Brie Larson, and Sigourney Weaver had us dreaming of universe crossovers when they took the stage to introduce composer Eimear Nooneis, who led the orchestra as it played the snippets from Best Original Score nominees and in so doing became the first female to lead the orchestra in the Oscars’ history. The trio said they were going to start a Fight Club, and that men were invited, but Gadot warned: “The loser gets to answer questions from journalists about how it feels to be a woman in Hollywood.” Weaver added, “All women are superheroes.” Fittingly, Best Original Score went to Hildur Guðnadóttir for Joker, who became the third woman to win in the category.Joaquin Phoenix Gets His Oscar For Joker (2019) 68%, Quotes Brother River In Moving Talk of JusticeJoaquin Phoenix was quick to ask the crowd to stop as it rose to its feet after Olivia Colman – hilarious as ever in her intro – announced him as Best Actor for Joker. Phoenix was visibly moved by the honor, and took the opportunity on stage to talk about the unifying thread between so many political movements – whether fighting racism or gender inequality or fighting for queer, indigenous, or animal rights , we re talking about the fight against injustice, Phoenix said. He went on to talk about our responsibility to all sentient beings and the environment and finished his remarks, choking up a little, as he quoted a lyric written by his late brother River: “Run to the rescue with love and peace will follow.”Renée Zellweger s Comeback Is Complete It was not the most surprising win of the night, but it was one of the most moving. Renée Zellweger accepted the award in tribute to the woman she plays in Judy: Miss Garland this is certainly for you. Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (2019) 98% Sweeps the Night, Becomes First Foreign-Language Movie to Win Best PictureParasite made history as the first foreign-language film to ever win Best Picture at the Oscars, crowning the evening with the night’s biggest award having already taken out Best International Feature, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director for Bong Joon-ho. When Joon-ho accepted South Korea’s first ever win – off its first nomination – for Best International Feature Film (formerly Best Foreign Language Film) earlier in the night, he called upon the cast and crew of Parasite to stand and for the crowd to applaud their work, saying he was proud to be the first recipient of the award under its new name. He finished that acceptance speech in English, saying, “I’m ready for a drink tonight,” and later, accepting the award for Best Director, said, “I will be drunk until next morning.”During that speech, Joon-ho paid tribute to his fellow directing nominees, with particular affection given to Martin Scorsese, whose films Joon-ho said he had studied and inspired his love for film.Thumbnail images courtesy Kevin Winter/Getty ImagesWhat were your biggest highlights of the night? One of two things could be happening this weekend: Either Vin Diesel is somewhere smiling thinking that The Fast and the Furious series is not as big without him or the entire series itself is starting to wane – at least here in America. Hobbs Shaw actually had an opening that both Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham can brag is higher than any of their previous starring vehicles, but as part of this particular franchise, its domestic numbers are not nearly as impressive.King of the Crop: Hobbs Shaw Leads Weekend But Trails Franchise Numbers(Photo by Universal)Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw opened to .8 million this weekend. That is higher than either Johnson’s San Andreas (.58 million) or Statham’s The Meg (.40 million), but it is lower than any of the films since 2009, when both Diesel and Paul Walker returned for the first time together back to the series. That started this cinematic phenomenon that began with a .95 million opening that increased to .19 million in 2011, then .37 in 2013. After Walker’s untimely death, the series had the same kind of bump in interest that The Dark Knight had in 2008. Nolan’s film opened to 8.41 million six months after Heath Ledger’s passing. After a delay in the release for Furious 7, it opened in April 2017 to the highest Tomatometer score in the series (81%) and a weekend of 7.18 million, which at the time was the ninth biggest opening ever. That opening is now 24th best, but it is still the eighth-highest ever worldwide with .516 billion. The Fate of the Furious was to continue its global dominance with .236 billion (good for 17th all-time – though will soon be passed by The Lion King) but its domestic gross of 6 million fell behind the sixth and seventh chapters. If Hobbs Shaw followed in sync with the rest of the series, it should have had no worse than the third-best August opening ever. Alas, it will have to settle for s
Uzo Aduba and Matthew Broderick will lead the cast of Netflix’s Painkiller, a six-episode series about the beginnings of the opioid crisis and specifically Purdue Pharma’s role in it. Aduba will play Edie, an investigator leading the case against Purdue, and Broderick will play Richard Sackler, the former chairman and president of Purdue. Peter Berg will direct all six episodes and serve as an executive producer, while Alex Gibney, the filmmaker of HBO’s recent similarly-themed documentary The Crime of the Century, will also be an EP. The limited series is based on author Barry Meier’s book Pain Killer: An Empire of Deceit and the Origin of America’s Opioid Epidemic and journalist Patrick Radden Keeke’s New Yorker article “The Family That Built an Empire of Pain.”Jeff Goldblum has joined the fifth season of HBO Max’s Search Party, where he’ll play Tunnel Quinn, a tech billionaire who becomes a business partner of Alia Shawkat’s Dory.Lost alum Dominic Monaghan will star in AMC’s space drama Moonhaven, playing Paul Sarno, a detective on the Moon who has the job of trying to solve Earth’s problems. The thriller, from Lodge 49 writer and producer Peter Ocko, revolves around cargo pilot and smuggler Bella Sway, who’s accused of a crime 100 years in the future and is sentenced to live in a utopian community called Moonhaven and help solve Earth’s problems before its civilization ends. (TVLine)Jerry O’Connell, who has been a guest co-host on CBS’s The Talk recently, has been hired as a permanent co-host, filling the spot vacated by Sharon Osbourne.(Photo by Leon Bennett/Getty Images)The Paramount+ limited series The Offer, about the making of The Godfather, has added to its cast, as the production began this week in Los Angeles. Grey’s Anatomy alum Justin Chambers (pictured) has signed on to play Marlon Brando, while Lou Ferrigno will play Lenny Montana, the actor who portrayed Luca Brasi in The Godfather, and The Sopranos’ alum Michael Rispoli will play New York mobster Tommy Lucchese. The rest of the cast includes Miles Teller as producer Al Ruddy, Matthew Goode as famed producer Robert Evans, Colin Hanks as Barry Lapidus (the head of Gulf Western, which owned Paramount at the time), Dan Fogler as Francis Ford Coppola, Juno Temple as Ruddy’s assistant Bettye McCartt, Giovanni Ribisi as mob boss Joe Colombo, Frank John Hughes as Frank Sinatra, and Patrick Gallo as Mario Puzo, the author of The Godfather novel. Both John Lithgow and Jennifer Carpenter, whose characters didn’t make it out of the original Dexter series alive, will reprise their characters in Showtime’s upcoming limited sequel series. Presumably in flashbacks, unless Dexter (Michael C. Hall) has gotten up to some supernatural shenanigans after his lumberjack days. Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and The Late, Late Show host James Corden will co-star in the Amazon limited dramedy series Mammals, about the relationship of a married couple. The series is written by Jez Butterworth (Flag Day), and reunites Hawkins and Corden, who starred in a spoof of The Shape of Water during her guest appearance on his CBS late-night show.DJ Kahled is replacing Snoop Dogg as a judge on season 2 of TBS’ competition series Go-Big Show. Comedian Cristela Alonzo will host The WB’s remake of Legends of the Hidden Temple, which premieres on Oct. 10. Nicole Ari Parker, Sarita Choudhury, and Karen Pittman have joined the cast of HBO Max’s Sex and the City prequel series And Just Like That, playing a documentary filmmaker named Lisa Todd Wexley (Parker); real estate broker Seema Patel (Choudhury); and Dr. Nya Wallace, a Columbia Law School professor (Pittman). Zach Braff has joined the cast of the HBO Max sci-fi romantic comedy movie Moonshot. The Scrubs alum (and Emmy nominee for directing a Season 1 episode of Ted Lasso) woll play an “entrepreneur and visionary” who colonizes Mars. Lana Condor, Cole Sprouse, Mason Gooding, Emily Rudd, and Lukas Gage also star. (THR)
This Week s Ketchup brings you another eight headlines from the world of film development news (those stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering up-and-coming titles like Black Adam, Cinderella, Django/Zorro, and Magic 8-Ball.This WEEK S TOP STORYTOM HOLLAND S UNCHARTED MOVIE DATED FOR 2020(Photo by Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images)Tom Holland, the star of next month s Spider-Man: Far from Home, obviously has one of the biggest franchises going right now (both the Spider-Man movies and the MCU at large). That doesn t mean, however, that he can t start building other franchises for his filmography. Perhaps surprisingly for his age (23), that next big role for Tom Holland is Nathan Drake, the star of Sony s Uncharted video game franchise. (It appears that, as with Alicia Vikander s Tomb Raider reboot, the first Uncharted movie might be a prequel or origin story.) The movie has been in development for a while, but Sony Pictures has confirmed production by announcing a release date of December 18, 2020. By aiming for that weekend, Sony is directly taking on Steven Spielberg s West Side Story remake and Eddie Murphy s Coming to America sequel. The Uncharted video games combine elements of Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones, and arguably Nicolas Cage s National Treasure movies. The first Uncharted movie will be directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who made his debut in 2016 with 10 Cloverfield Lane (Certified Fresh at 90%).Fresh Developments1. QUENTIN TARANTINO S DJANGO TO CROSSOVER WITH ZORRO(Photo by Andrew Cooper/Weinstein Company)Much has been written in the last year or so about Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (7/26/2019) (currently Fresh at 94%) and his possible Star Trek plans, but another old rumor was confirmed this week with the news that Tarantino is also producing (but probably won t direct) what s basically a sequel to his 2012 Southern Django Unchained, starring Jamie Foxx as the title character. As appealing as such a sequel might be on its own, the title takes it to another level, because Django/Zorro would cross the character over with the Californian freedom fighter who is celebrating his 100th anniversary this year. Quentin Tarantino has enlisted comedian-turned-screenwriter Jerrod Carmichael, of TV s The Carmichael Show, to adapt the Dynamite Entertainment and Vertigo Comics comic book of the same title.2. SIMON PEGG AND NICK FROST REUNITING TO PRODUCE HORROR MOVIE SVALTA(Photo by Rogue Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)From 2004 to 2013, British comic actors Simon Pegg (a.k.a. Scotty from Star Trek and Benji from the Mission:Impossible movies) and Nick Frost starred in director Edgar Wright s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World s End), and also co-starred together in other films like Paul and The Adventures of Tintin. We should note right away that they re not yet confirmed to be starring in this week s new project, but they are producing the film together. Pegg and Frost have sold a horror pitch called Svalta to Orion Pictures, with Frost also attached as the film s screenwriter. Svalta will tell the story of a family on their summer vacation to a remote Swedish island [called Svalta] where they discover a serial killer is on the loose, but the locals have no interest in helping the stranded family of tourists. 3. NEW PROJECTS FOR MAHERSHALA ALI AND BARRY JENKINS(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Steve Mack/Everett Collection)In 2016, Mahershala Ali and director Barry Jenkins took home a trio of Oscars including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for their collaborative work on the coming-of-age drama Moonlight, and both of their stars have only risen higher since. Accordingly, each of them made headlines with new film projects this week. Mahershala Ali is now attached to executive produce and star in a Fox Searchlight true story drama called Solitary. The film will be adapted from a memoir by Albert Woodfox, who spent 43 years in solitary confinement at Louisiana s notorious Angola Prison. Barry Jenkins new film is also set up at Fox Searchlight, and it will be an untitled biopic about acclaimed dance choreographer Alvin Ailey.4. POP STAR CAMILA CABELLO S CINDERELLA SCHEDULED FOR 2021 (Photo by Steve Mack/Everett Collection)Sony Pictures is moving forward with plans for a new version of the fairy tale Cinderella starring Camila Cabello, a Cuban-American pop star who got her start as a contestant on The X-Factor in 2012, as the studio officially scheduled the film for release on February 5, 2021. That puts it one week after the Rugrats reboot movie (1/29/2021) and one week before Marvel Studios first movie in 2021 (we don t know which movie that is yet). This new Cinderella will be directed by Blockers (Certified Fresh at 83%) Kay Cannon, who this week also made the news for a project called 79ers. That movie is being produced by Will Ferrell and Seth Rogen and is described as being like The Goonies for adults, following a group of friends who are forced to reunite 20 years later after failing to finish a treasure hunt as teenagers.5. BILL SKARSGARD TO SPEND NINE DAYS WITH VARIOUS MARVEL MOVIE CO-STARS(Photo by Brooke Palmer/Warner Bros.)It s not that uncommon that the same actor or filmmaker shows up in more than one new project in a given week, but this week we saw this happen a few times. Let s start here with a supernatural thriller called Nine Days, in which Black Panther and Us star Winston Duke will play a mysterious man who interviews prospective candidates, a personification of human souls for the privilege that he once had. (This writer doesn t quite know what that even means, but there you go.) Those personifications will be played by Zazie Beetz (Domino from Deadpool 2), Benedict Wong (Wong from Doctor Strange), and Bill Skarsgård (a.k.a. Pennywise from IT). The repeat star in this case is Bill Skarsgård, who also signed on this week to star in a true crime drama called Gilded Rage.6. PETER DINKLAGE SAYS I CARE A LOT (Photo by HBO)Going into the final episodes of Game of Thrones, it seemed likely that the show s various stars would be riding career highs and that the casting stories would be chock-ablock with their names. That, however, was until everyone saw those last two episodes, which seemed to put the brakes on eight seasons of fan and critical love. Having said that, the stars of the show are obviously talented, and they should be just fine. Case in point: Peter Dinklage, GoT s Tyrion Lannister, joined Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike in a thriller called I Care a Lot. Pike will star as a legal guardian (a lawyer or a foster parent, it s unclear), but Dinklage s character is being kept secret.7. TWO YOUNG NETFLIX STARS CAST AS THE DAUGHTERS OF BILL TED FACE THE MUSIC (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)The last time we saw Bill S. Preston (Alex Winter) and Ted Logan (Keanu Reeves) in 1991 s Bill Ted s Bogus Journey, the rock stars of the band Wyld Stallyns seemed to be riding high, including happy relationships with their princess girlfriends plucked from medieval times. It s still unclear what all happened to Bill and Ted in the last 25+ years, but this week, we learned that their characters both now have teenage daughters. Those roles will be played by Netflix stars Samara Weaving (The Babysitter) and Brigette Lundy-Paine (Atypical) when Bill Ted Face the Music next summer (8/21/2020).Rotten Ideas2. DWAYNE JOHNSON REUNITING WITH JUNGLE CRUISE DIRECTOR FOR BLACK ADAM (Photo by Vince Valitutti/Columbia Pictures)Disney s Jungle Cruise, based on their long-running theme park ride, doesn t come out until next July (7/24/2020), so most people probably don t even know it s in the works. (FYI, Disney also recruited their Mary Poppins Returns star, Emily Blunt, to take that cruise as well.) Nevertheless, Dwayne Johnson must ve had great things to say about his Jungle Cruise director, because Jaume Collett-Serra has now been recruited by New Line Cinema to reunite with Johnson on Black Adam. Johnson has long been attached to star in the DC Comics adaptation, including a time when he would have co-starred in Shazam! as the immortal Egyptian villain-turned-antihero Black Adam. (It s arguable that Mark Strong s Dr. Sivana filled the role Black Adam would have.) Jaume Collett-Serra s Tomatometer is mostly comprised of Rotten splotches, but he did receive Fresh scores for Non-Stop and The Shallows. Hopefully these next two collaborations with Dwayne Johnson will yield better results.1. MAGIC 8 BALL GETTING ITS OWN BLUMHOUSE HORROR FRANCHISE(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/Relativity Media courtesy Everett Collection)Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures, and Hasbro Films had two relative hits with Ouija and its prequel Ouija: Origin of Evil. With that in mind, Blumhouse and Universal are uniting with another toy company, Mattel, on a similar project, this time based on Magic 8-Balls. We can all shake our Magic 8-Balls to see what it says about a Magic 8-Ball movie, but one thing that suggests outlook not so good is that the director Blumhouse and Universal have hired for the job is Jeff Wadlow. Of the six feature films on Wadlow s, not one has received a Fresh score, with 2013 s superhero sequel Kick-Ass 2 earning the highest score at 32% on the Tomatometer. Jeff Wadlow s next film before taking on Magic 8-Ball will be the movie adaptation of the long-running ABC supernatural drama Fantasy Island, starring Michael Peña as the new Mr. Roarke.Like this?

In another time the weekend would have been billed as the battle between the Joker and the Gemini Man. This is not that time. While nobody seriously gave the new Will Smith film a chance to dethrone the comic-book spinoff film, many assumed it could at least beat The Addams Family. It is a story about three stories at the box office this week and none of them involve Jexi. But the story of Joker is shaping up to be a bigger one than anyone truly imagined.King of the Crop: Joker Keeps on Smiling with Record-Breaking Second Weekend(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Warner Bros.’ Joker showed no real signs of a slow-down this week and set a new record on top of it. Initial estimates on Friday suggested a weekend just under million. As of Sunday morning the projections had jumped to million, which handily bests the .1 million that Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity made to have now the best first and second weekends ever for a film opening in October. With 2.73 million total domestically through 10 days it is also well ahead of Venom’s 2.1 million and Gravity’s 2.3 million. That second number is significant since Cuaron’s film is the highest-grossing October film of all time and Joker now finds itself just million behind. Todd Phillips’ film also joins an elite group of movies opening to million or higher and dropping less than 44% in their second week: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 2002’s Spider-Man, Shrek 2, 2016’s The Jungle Book, Wonder Woman, Inside Out, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, The Passion of the Christ, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.Gravity was a marvel of consistency, never dropping more than 37% through its first seven weeks. Joker fell only 42.8% this weekend and could even challenge Gravity’s record-setting million third weekend. On the all-time 10-day chart, Joker is more than  million ahead of Phillips’ own The Hangover Part II (7.87 million), a film which fell 63.5% in weekend two down to .38 million and ultimately finished with 4.46 million. Gravity’s final domestic haul was 4 million, but now Joker is in a group of 63 other films with 0 million or more after 10 days (Joker is 62nd), and only five of those films failed to reach 0 million. The lowest-grossing film among them was The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, with 1.28 million – which would be good enough to secure October’s highest-grossing film ever. Worldwide Joker is up to 1 million.Fresh Surprise: Addams Family Spooks Up A Strong OpeningUnited Artists Releasing, which has become the roof over the heads of Annapurna, Orion and MGM, had a good weekend, and their animated version of The Addams Family is going to be their highest-grossing film to date. Addams took home a .3 million opening weekend, looking to surpass UA’s The Hustle (.41 million total) in a few days and Annapurna’s Vice (.83 million) before its 10th day. This may be less than Adam Sandler’s Hotel Transylvania films, which began between million and million each, but is now the third-best October start for an animated film behind Shark Tale (.6 million) and Puss in Boots (.07 million). They went on to gross 0 million and 9 million, respectively. Only nine films have ever opened in October to less than million and hit 0 million (Meet the Parents, The Departed, Captain Phillips, Paranormal Activity, Argo, The Ring, Look Who’s Talking, Pulp Fiction, and American Beauty.)Rotten Returns: Gemini Man Continues Troubling October Trend

Just a week after the prestigious audiences and midnight crowds of Toronto International Film Festival, it s Austin s moment to shine as host to the weirdest and most fantastic week of the year. Unlike Austin s other big fest SXSW, which shows a varied program of indie dramas, big blockbuster movies and crowd-pleasing comedies, Fantastic Fest thrives on providing an audience with the best horror, sci-fi, action and plain bizarre movies from all around the world.Though the festival has held world premieres for big titles like There Will Be Blood, Zombieland, and Split, and this year prides itself for showing acclaimed films from other festivals like Parasite, Knives Out and Jojo Rabbit, what makes Fantastic Fest special is how it manages to find genre gems from every corner of the world. Some of the films take years before anyone is able to see them, and some become overnight successes after playing in the heat of the Texas capital. To help you plan your future watch-list of weird and unforgettable genre films, we’ve put together a list highlighting some of the genre movies that blew audiences and critics alike away at Fantastic Fest 2019, which ran September 19-26, and show genre movies can come in many forms.Butt Boy (2019) 71% Here it is. The weirdest, most bizarre movie of the year, and one that just screams Fantastic Fest. You probably already have an idea of what this movie is about based on the title, but Butt Boy is so much more than a gross-out comedy. Yes, it is a one-joke movie about a guy who becomes addicted to putting anything and everything up his butt, but it is also a near-homage to David Fincher, with director Tyler Cornack delivering a pulpy crime thriller involving a cat-and-mouse chase between a hardboiled detective and our titular Butt Boy. Critic Germain Lussier wrote for io9: “Butt Boy is a wholly entertaining and engaging film that dashes expectations at every single step. By the end, you may even shed a tear and absolutely won t judge a movie by its title ever again.”No release date has been announced yet. Sweetheart (2019) 95% A bit of an anti-Shape of Water, J.D. Dillard’s sophomore feature is a terrifying and monstrous survival story of a woman stranded on an island. Think Cast Away, but instead of a volleyball our protagonist’s only companion is a man-eating sea monster. The survival aspect of the movie allows breakout performer Kiersey Clemons to give us full gritty determination in a largely mute role, while the sea monster element allows for impressive creature design and terrifying and bloody confrontations. “One woman, one gilled foe, one gorgeous escape ploy that rations tension as to sustain all 90-ish minutes,” wrote /Film’s critic Matt Donato, and critics agree that the film’s fast pace, creature design and terrific performances make for an entertaining and engrossing aquatic thriller.Universal will release Sweetheart digitally on October 22.

亚博体彩APP投注平台 (Photo by HBO)HBO ordered the first of the four Game of Thrones prequel scripts in the works to pilot in June 2018. Goldman won the contest to develop the next series based on the A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy universe with her story set in the decline of the Age of Heroes.Fans of Martin’s series of novels and companion works will recognize this period as the beginning of the legendary Long Night, a generation of winter that starved and froze the populace of Westeros and saw a fierce battle of the Others (White Walkers) and their army of dead (wights) against the living. In an earlier blog post, Martin had suggested the number of viable scripts may have narrowed further and hinted at the subject of the prequel written by Condal: There are still a couple of other possible prequels in active development. I can’t tell you the subject matter of those projects, no, sorry, wish I could. The readers among you might want to grab a copy of Fire Blood when it is released on November 20, though. Fire Blood: 300 Years Before A Game of Thrones (A Targaryen History) Book 1 is the next A Song of Ice and Fire companion book and the first volume of a two-part history of the Targaryens. (The new book begins with Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and recounts generations of Targaryens who fought to hold the seat, up to the civil war that nearly destroyed their dynasty.)What the Prequel Was AboutThe story line: “Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend — it’s not the story we think we know.”Who Was Running the Show? The show was created by Martin and Goldman, who is known for her screenplays for Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, The Woman in Black, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and the upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid film. Her Tomatometer average on 10 films is 73%. Goldman was to serve as showrunner.“I’ve consulted with all of the writers on all of the successor shows, and several of them have visited me in Santa Fe for long days of discussion,” Martin wrote on his blog, “and we’ve gone back and forth in email, text, and telephone, so I have definitely been involved… but really, the accolades here should go to Jane. She has been an absolute thrill to work with… and my god, what a talent.”SPOILER ALERT: While information that follows will be familiar to fans of the Song of Ice and Fire novels and their companion materials, some of it may be considered spoilers to anyone who has chosen not to read the book series.(Photo by HBO)So what is it that “we think we know” about the time period of the first prequel? When It Takes Place: Descent from Age of Heroes = the Beginning of the Long NightThe Age of Heroes: Around 10,000 years before Aegon’s Conquest (we re going to go ahead and use “B.C.” for before the Conquest ), the Children of the Forest and the First Men agreed to the Pact, a peace treaty that kicked off the Age of Heroes, a time that many of the major noble Houses, including the Starks, trace their lineage back to if not earlier. For reference, the events of the seventh season of Game of Thrones occur roughly 300 years after the Conquest (or “A.C.”) of Aegon the Conqueror, the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, king on the Iron Throne, and founder of the Targaryen dynasty of rulers. We know, however, that the show took many liberties with the plots of the books; for one, to compress the series’ timeline. In season 1 of the series, Old Nan tells young Brandon Stark tales of the Long Night, which began 8,000 or 6,000 years B.C. (apparently, even in fiction, accounts may differ).Given the few details we have about the prequel, it would be fair to surmise that its events take place anywhere between 6,000 and 9,000 years before Jon Snow became King in the North and Daenerys returned to Dragonstone with her “children.”That’s a hell of a long time, and it promises that the world the prequel takes place in will be in many ways more primitive than the one fans of the show are used to seeing.Major Events In and Around the Period(Photo by Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBO)The Pact: With around 1,000 or 2,000 years separating the Pact from the Long Night, the immediate events around the treaty won’t likely be seen (except perhaps in flashback like the Tower of Joy moments with young Ned and Lyanna Stark seen in Game of Thrones). The Pact was signed on the Isle of Faces in the center of the lake called Gods Eye.The prequel is set at least 6,000 years B.C., and — just to remind us of the timing — construction on the monstrous castle Harrenhal, a ruin in Game of Thrones, will begin on the north shore of Gods Eye around 42 years B.C. by King Harren Hoare. But who’s to say how the new series will play with the timing of events? The Long Night: A generation of the darkest, coldest winter in known history that saw the Others come down from Lands of Always Winter to devastate the world of men.Battle for the Dawn: Is the final battle of the Long Night — the outcome, of course, is clear given that the events of Game of Thrones happen. The Night s King Rises: The thirteenth Lord Commander of the Night s Watch breaks his vow and declares himself a king. The Starks of Winterfell and the King-Beyond-the-Wall, Joramun, join forces to take him down. The stories have it that his treachery began when he was seduced by a female Other, which — White Walker sex would be something we definitely haven t seen. The Andal Invasion: Accounts vary, but the Andals crossed the Narrow Sea from Essos anywhere from 2,000 to 6,000 years B.C., close enough for the prequel to potentially feature something of the Andal Invasion, which began at the Fingers (homeland of Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish in Game of Thrones). In Essos, people discover dragons: If the sheepherders who would go on to become the Valyrians of the region were only just discovering their dragons when the First Men were recovering from the Long Night, that should give us some idea of how much time will have to pass before dragons become part of this story. That said, the Asshai i claimed the dragons of Valyria came from their Shadow Lands and that the Valyrians were taught to control their dragons by Eastern mystics visiting the region, so even if the prequel doesn t show dragons in Valyria, if it spends any time in that magical Eastern part of the world, we may see dragons after all.The histories also suggest that the Valyrians and their dragons may have bullied the Andals out of Essos, which would mean that the Andal Invasion happened later than 6,000 years B.C. — and by later, we mean closer to Aegon s Conquest in the 2,000, 4,000, or 6,000 years between the Long Night and it (depending on when the events of the prequel is set). But the potential overlap (at around 6,000 years B.C. for most of these major events) makes for intriguing possibilities: The prequel could show, for instance, the people of the Valyrian peninsula discovering the dragon nesting place and their first attempts to tame the beasts, while in Westeros the Long Night might be in full swing.Who Are the Possible Players?(Photo by Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBO)Given the timeline, we’ve already established that we’ll likely see the Children of the Forest and certainly the First Men (speakers of the Old Tongue and, after interacting with the Children of the Forest, worshipers of the Old Gods), but who are the notable people among and around them? The Three-Eyed Raven (or Crow): Even though Martin himself has denied that any of the original series cast would appear, of all the characters in Game of Thrones, two who could reasonably make an appearance in a prequel (outside of flash-forwards) are the time-travelers: the original Three-Eyed Raven (Max von Sydow) and Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright). When we asked Wright back in December 2017 if Bran might show up as the Three-Eyed Raven in a prequel, he said: It would be fun. There’s so much in the history of Westeros I would love to be involved in, and I’ve got to be a small part of some of those bits and get to sort of observe some of those early things going on in the world. I would love, yeah love, to be able to be a part of any of it, any of the history. So if they offered me to come back for a day and sort of, pop by, and have a look at some scene back from King Aerys or whatever, I wouldn’t say no.”Bran the Builder: Brandon Stark, the founder of House Stark, built the Wall and Winterfell. He is also credited with constructing or aiding the construction of other mighty projects like Storm’s End, seat of House Durrandon (and the later seat of House Baratheon).Durran Godsgrief: The first Storm King, builder of Storm’s End (possibly with help of Bran the Builder and the Children of the Forest), and founder of House Durrandon, Durran married Elenei, supposedly the daughter of the sea god and the goddess of the wind, unleashing all sorts of chaos.Dondarrions: The ancestral House of Game of Thrones’ Beric Dondarrion (leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners and the last head of his House).House Casterly: The richest lords of Westeros had found gold in their rock and, in the process of digging it out, built the most impressive castle on the continent. In the Age of Heroes, they lost their home and the family disappeared.Lann the Clever: Founder of House Lannister who infamously swindled Casterly Rock away from House Casterly.
