In the upcoming seven-part HBO limited series Mare of Easttown, Kate Winslet stars as a small-town Pennsylvania detective who grapples with past and present troubles while investigating a murder. It s a character that Winslet says she may not be that similar to — in part because, as she told journalists Wednesday during HBO and HBO Max s all-virtual winter Television Critics Association press day, I d be a f ing lousy detective. Read on to learn more about Mare of Easttown as well as details on HBO Max s Genera+ion and other programs coming to the sister networks.TOP STORYNo SVU Sundays for Winslet(Photo by Michele K. Short/HBO) I don t think I have the mental stamina that is required, Winslet said of being a detective, adding But I think the one thing I did feel I had in common with Mare — that I, quite honestly, was able to lean on a lot — was that real sense of family and how much it means to her to hold that together at all costs. And also to be able to admit to herself from time to time that she has failed in a lot of areas and tries desperately to correct those errors and to hold everyone as close to her as she can, even if she s a difficult person to live with from time to time. Winslet said she actually deliberately didn t binge-watch any TV crime dramas to prepare for her role, although she did watch a lot of real crime drama and a lot of YouTube footage. She also spent some time working with real police department individuals in blacked-out vehicles driving around those areas in order to learn, she explained, because we really wanted to capture the essence of what it s like to really be a detective from that town since it s a place that really exist. She also tried to master the distinct accent of this part of Pennsylvania. The thing that was hardest for me, of course, was to do it well enough that you kind of shouldn t hear the act of doing it, she said. I always hate that when you can hear someone doing a voice or doing an accent. And that s one of the things for me that is more important than anything is just making it just disappear and blend in. So I did spend a long time working with a coach and working with people locally, as well. And it was up there amongst the hardest accents I ve ever done. The limited series also stars Julianne Nicholson (The Outsider) as Lori Ross, Mare’s best friend since childhood; Jean Smart (Watchmen) as Helen, Mare s mother; Angourie Rice (Black Mirror) as Siobhan Sheehan, Mare’s teenaged daughter; Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as Detective Colin Zabel, the county detective called in to assist with Mare s investigation; Guy Pearce (Mildred Pierce) as Richard Ryan, a local creative writing professor; Cailee Spaeny (Devs) as Erin McMenamin, an isolated teen living with her volatile father; David Denman (Outcast) as Frank Sheehan, Mare’s ex-husband; John Douglas Thompson (Let Them All Talk) as Chief Carter, Mare s boss at the Easttown Police Department; Patrick Murney (Seven Seconds) as Kenny McMenamin, Erin s father; James McArdle (Ammonite) as Deacon Mark Burton; Sosie Bacon (Here and Now) as Carrie Layden, Drew’s mother and Kevin’s ex-girlfriend; Joe Tippett (Rise) as John Ross, Lori s husband and high school sweetheart; and Neal Huff (The Wire) as Mare’s cousin, Father Dan Hastings. The series is from creator and writer Brad Ingelsby (The Way Back), with all episodes directed by Craig Zobel (The Leftovers).Mare of Easttown will premiere Sunday, April 18 on HBO.Talking Bout HBO Max s Genera+ion(Photo by HBO)The latest in HBO and HBO Max s line of pot-stirring TV series is Genera+ion. Created by teen Zelda Barnz and her dad, screenwriter Daniel Barnz, and follows a group of high schoolers who have frank conversations about race, sexuality, gender identity and more.Starring younger actors like Justice Smith and Michael Johnston, it s based loosely on people Zelda knew from her time in high school and she says I think if you re basing a show o ff something real and authentic, something that s real and authentic is intersectionality and people who identify across the gender and sexuality spectrum and with different races and different ethnicities. And so I think it’s important to remember that they re not just people who are straight and gay, there s like a whole spectrum and all those identities deserve to be represented. The show will also, inevitably, draw comparisons to HBO s Emmy-winning teen drama, Euphoria.Daniel Barnz tells the TCA journalists that Euphoria is an incredible show and the craftsmanship in it is amazing, but that when you watch them, it’s just abundantly clear that they are different shows. One of the most obvious differences is that Euphoria is an hour-long show and ours is a half-hour show, he continues. And that s not just the time difference. You know, the real beauty and excitement of being able to work in that half-hour format is that there s less pressure on story and you re allowed to let your characters live and breathe and experience. And one of the things that Zelda’s always wanting us to do with the show is to reflect the actual experiences of teenagers which sometimes is kind of random or weird. And you go off on tangents and strange things happen, and we wanted to reflect that in the storytelling as well. The series stars Nathanya Alexander, Chloe East, Nava Mau, Lukita Maxwell, Haley Sanchez, Uly Schlesinger, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Chase Sui Wonders with Justice Smith, and Martha Plimpton.Genera+ion premieres March 11 on HBO Max.Plus: In Treatment Revived, Jean Smart Comedy Is on the Horizon, Surfer Garrett McNamara Describes the Perfect Wave, and Alex Gibney Investigates The Crime of the Century(Photo by HBO)A new installment of HBO s In Treatment premieres in May, this time with Uzo Aduba in the therapist s chair instead of Gabriel Byrne. The story will take into consideration the current global pandemic as well as other cultural and political issues. An example? There’s such a stigma attached to it, especially in communities of color, so it felt important to me, personally, to put that on television to show that we all need this, executive producer Joshua Allen told journalists. The series also stars Anthony Ramos, Liza Colón-Zayas, John Benjamin Hickey, Quintessa Swindell, and Joel Kinnaman.Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are starring in an as-yet-to-be-titled upcoming HBO Max comedy about a legendary Las Vegas comedian and her relationship with an entitled 25-year-old. Executive producers include Broad City’s Paul W. Downs (who also appears on the show) and Lucia Aniello and The Good Place’s Jen Statsky and Michael Schur. But is the show a send-up or homage of any performer in particular? “Every once in a while, there’ll be a scene or I’ll do something and I’ll think, ‘Oh, that kind of reminds me of so-and-so,' Smart said. I guess I borrow things from other comedians unconsciously, anywhere from Elayne Boosler to Phyllis Diller to Sam Kinison.”The upcoming six-part surfing documentary for HBO, 100 Foot Wave, follows surfing pioneer Garrett McNamara and his quest to find the largest wave. But what is the perfect wave? A perfect wave, for most surfers, has a really good barrel on it. So you come down the wave and instead of running 11 in front of the wave away from it, you wait for it to cave over you. You’re either running full speed and it passes you, or you wait until the last second and turn under it, McNamara said.Alex Gibney’s upcoming two-part HBO documentary, The Crime of the Century, looks at the opioid crisis. And while there are definitely similarities between the prevalence of this drug and the history of Big Tobacco, source Anna Lembke, the medical director of addiction medicine at Stanford University, explained that tobacco never pretended that they were selling medicine that would actually make you better; whereas, [for] the opioid industry, that was their winning ticket. Tina, an intimate look at the life and career of musical icon Tina Turner from HBO Documentary Films, premieres on March 27.HBO Max announced its adult animation slate, including a two-season order for Clone High, a modern refresh of the series from Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Bill Lawrence that was set at a high school for clones of historical figures; a 10-episode order for Warner Bros. Animation’s Velma, a comedic origin story for brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang, Velma Dinkley, voiced by executive producer Mindy Kaling; Fired On Mars, an existential workplace comedy set five minutes in the future, voiced by Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live). The streamer also renewed creator JG Quintel (Regular Show) animated series Close Enough for seasons 2 and 3.Animated series in development include cat tale Hello Paul; Obi, an adaptation of Obi Arisukwu’s Instagram comic strip about a man-child pursuing a career as an artist; Uncanny Valley about three awkward domestic helper robots who kill their human owners and try to assume their identities; and comic book adaptation Cover, an animated espionage thriller from Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack.On an Apple device? This Week s Ketchup brings you another ten headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles for this Friday the 13th as the horror reboots of Dracula and and Scream, as well as Disney s live-action remake of Peter Pan Wendy. This WEEK S TOP STORYBLUMHOUSE EYEING DRACULA AND FRANKENSTEIN REBOOTS AFTER THE INVISIBLE MAN (Photo by Jasin Boland/©Universal Pictures)Much has been written about how the relative disappointment of 2017 s The Mummy led to Universal scrapping its plans for a Dark Universe featuring their classic Universal monsters. Since then, Universal has changed course with those characters and franchises, including Paul Feig s Dark Army project, a possible Monster Mash musical, and the recent reboot of The Invisible Man (Certified Fresh at 91%), starring Elisabeth Moss. The box office opening of million for the latter (from a budget of just million) is seen as a relative success in a period in which other movies like The Call of the Wild and Pixar s Onward had openings that were perceived as more disappointing. The Invisible Man was produced by Blumhouse Productions (Get Out, The Purge, Insidious, Sinister), and it s sounding like Universal wants Blumhouse to revive their other classic Universal monsters. Blumhouse and Univeral are now teaming up on a Dracula reboot (which is bad news for Dracula Untold star Luke Evans) to be directed by Karyn Kusama (Destroyer, The Invitation). (Incidentally, the Hollywood Reporter ran a piece this week about how Dracula can be rebooted for the 2020s.) Producer Jason Blum has also been talking up his interest in rebooting Frankenstein recently, though nothing official has been reported on that film yet. In related news, Aquaman director James Wan is now developing a non-Blumhouse project inspired by Universal s monster legacy (however one wants to interpret that).Other Top Headlines1. THE TEAM BEHIND READY OR NOT ARE READY TO SCREAM (Photo by Fox Searchlight Pictures)From 2003 to 2010, Michael Bay s Platinum Dunes production company began a series of horror movie reboots that would eventually include some of the most iconic franchises, like Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Amityville Horror, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That eventually led to other horror franchises being rebooted (like Halloween, Child s Play, and this year s Candyman), but one that has quietly still been waiting its turn is Scream, the 1996 movie that arguably first suc

on so far, the 7th best total of 2019.The Record Has Fallen: Avengers: Endgame Beats Avatar(Photo by Marvel Studios)In 1975 it was Steven Spielberg and Jaws. Two years later it was George Lucas and Star Wars. 1982 comes along and Spielberg regains the throne with E.T.  In 1993 Spielberg replaces himself with Jurassic Park. The next phenomenon in 1997-98 was Titanic. Cameron then pulled a Spielberg and Avatar bested Titanic in 2009-10. Three directors have held the box office record for 44 years. This weekend two more joined the fray as Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers: Endgame passed Avatar as the highest grossing film in the world of all time. The film was million away from the record when Endgame was re-issued into theaters with some additional material. The final numbers were not out this weekend when Kevin Feige made the announcement that there was a new no. 1 during Marvel’s panel at the San Diego Comic-Con Saturday night. As of Sunday, Avengers: Endgame has grossed an estimated 4.21 million domestic and .790 billion worldwide. When the final estimates come in on Monday, Avengers: Endgame will officially take its place in history.Top 10 and Beyond: Far From Home Close To Record(Photo by © Columbia Pictures / © Marvel Studios/ Courtesy Everett Collection)Spider-Man: Far From Home made million over the weekend, and is estimated to be at 9.7 million overall. That s  million ahead of the pace of Sam Raimi’s 2002 origin tale, which is still the only Spider-Man film to cross the 0 million line. Far From Home has grossed 9.5 million worldwide, over million more than Spider-Man: Homecoming made in its entire run and less than million behind Spider-Man 3 which is the highest-grossing Spidey film ever. Until Monday.Toy Story 4 is at 4.3 million as of Sunday after a .4 million weekend. One full month into release. That is the 20th highest in history, just ahead of Captain Marvel’s 3.8 million. Disney’s Aladdin also just passed the 1994 Lion King for its spot on the all-time worldwide chart after this weekend s .8 million weekend. It is now 40th all-time with 8 million with a billion dollars in its sights. As for last week’s releases, Crawl looks like it will outgross Lake Placid’s 1999 haul of .7 million, suggesting a final haul around - million. That along with a few international dollars will be enough to get the .5 million production into profit. The same cannot be said for Stuber which is actually on about the same track as Midsommar, both between .9 and .1 million after 10 days. Midsommar is up to .48 million in its third weekend and both are headed in the realm of million each. Danny Boyle’s Yesterday could now be headed north of million, after this weekend s haul of .1 million.Keeping an eye on what has potential to be the indie success story of the summer, Lulu Wang’s The Farewell was expanded into 35 theaters by A24 and grossed .17 million. That puts the film in league with The Kids Are All Right (.06 million / 38 theaters), The Favourite (.07 / 34), Boyhood (.17 / 34), and Lady Bird (.19 / 37).This Time Last Year: Sequels .Here We Go Again!(Photo by © Sony Pictures Releasing)There was a close race for the top spot at the box office but Denzel Washington in The Equalizer 2 edged out Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again .01 to .95 million. Another sequel, Unfriended: Dark Web, barely made the top 10, making .65 million for a ninth-place finish. Even the race for the middle was decided by less than a million between Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (.26 million), Skyscraper (.36 million), and Incredibles 2 (.89 million). The top 10 films grossed 7.37 million and averaged 67.4% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top 10 grossed an estimated 5.28 million and averaged 69.3%. That total ranks as the third best top 10 weekend ever in July. It is behind only July 18-20, 2008 (0.97 million) when The Dark Knight ruled and July 15-17, 2011 when the previous singular July record-holder (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2) helped charge the top 10 to 8.55 million.七宗罪游戏This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Dungeons Dragons, Excelsior!, and Revenge of the Nerds. This WEEK S TOP STORYCHRIS PINE ROLLS A NATURAL 20 ON DUNGEONS DRAGONS (Photo by Clay Enos/©Warner Bros.)One lesson we can take from film history is that trends change over time, and a failed concept decades ago could be a success today. Consider, for example, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Back in 1990, the first Captain America movie (Rotten at 13%) didn t even get a theatrical release in the USA, and it went direct-to-video two years after it was made. Similar to the contemporary popularity of comic books, the role-playing game Dungeons Dragons is much more in vogue now than it was in 1990, when the first Dungeons Dragons movie (Rotten at 10%) was released. Warner Bros. had been trying for several years to get a new Dungeons Dragons movie produced, including periods when actors like Ansel Elgort and Vin Diesel were either in talks or were approached about starring. Since then, the rights to the Dungeons Dragons movie moved to Paramount Pictures, which also has the rights to other Hasbro properties like Transformers, Micronauts, and G.I. Joe. The Dungeons Dragons reboot appears to draw closer to actually happening this week with the news that Chris Pine is now in talks to star and also produce the adaptation. It s not super surprising that Pine is being eyed by Paramount, as he was also their Captain Kirk in the most recent Star Trek films. The premise and setting of the new Dungeons Dragons movie are not yet known, except that hopes of it possibly being a Dragonlance adaptation appeared to be dashed earlier this year (Forgotten Realms, though, is still totally possible). What we do know is that Dungeons Dragons will be directed and written by the team of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who co-directed Game Night (Certified Fresh at 85%), and also co-wrote Horrible Bosses and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Daley also starred in Freaks Geeks, which memorably had a very special Dungeons Dragons episode. In addition to Wonder Woman 1984 (12/25/2020), Chris Pine will also soon be seen in the thriller Violence of Action, Olivia Wilde s Don t Worry Darling, and the spy film All the Old Knives.Other Top Headlines1. MILLIE BOBBY BROWN JOINS THE RUSSO BROTHERS  ELECTRIC STATE(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)After directing four films for Marvel Studios (the two most recent Captain America and Avengers films), Joe and Anthony Russo are next directing films for two streaming apps: Cherry for Apple+ and The Grey Man for Netflix. We now know what film might be the duo s return to theatrically targeted feature films, as they are now signed to direct and produce a science fiction film for Universal Pictures. Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown is attached to star in Electric State, which will be an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same title. Brown will play a teenage girl who goes on an adventure with a toy robot to discover what happened to her missing brother in an imaginative world of humans mixing with robots, uncovering a grand conspiracy in the process. The Electric State screenplay is being adapted by screenwriting partners Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who previously worked with the Russo brothers on all four of their Marvel movies, as well as The Grey Man. Directly addressing the theatrical or streaming question, Joe and Anthony Russo said in their announcement that, We’re thrilled to have this deal with Universal who has committed to a theatrical release of Electric State. In addition to season 4 of Stranger Things, Millie Bobby Brown will also soon be seen in the monster movie sequel, Godzilla vs Kong (5/21/2021), which will premiere both in theaters and on HBO Max.2. FLORENCE PUGH JOINS MYSTERY THE MAID (Photo by A24)After decades of relative absence from mainstream box office prominence, the mystery genre appears to be coming back, following the 0+ million takes of both Murder on the Orient Express (2 million worldwide) in 2017 and Knives Out (1 million worldwide) in 2019. The de facto sequel to that first film, Agatha Christie s Death on the Nile would have come out by now if not for the COVID-19 pandemic, but is now scheduled for September 17, 2021. We can also add a film called The Maid, which Universal Pictures is adapting from a novel to be published in 2022 (possibly after the movie comes out to avoid spoilers). Florence Pugh (Midsommar, Black Widow) is now signed to produce and star in The Maid as the title character, who works at a fancy hotel where she uses her access to learn the dirty secrets of every one of the guests (the novel is also being compared to 2017 s Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine). In addition to Black Widow (5/7/2021), Pugh will also soon be seen in Olivia Wilde s Don t Worry, Darling, and in the Disney+ series Hawkeye (reprising her Black Widow character).3. RISE OF SKYWALKER COSTAR SAYS I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY (Photo by Jonathan Olley/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)When most American fans saw last year s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Rotten at 51%), they were probably unfamiliar with Naomi Ackie, who played Jannah, the leader who assists our heroes on Kef Bir. Ackie is better known in the U.K., however, where she has won the 2017 British Independent Award for Most Promising Newcomer for Lady MacBeth (Certified Fresh at 88%) (starring the aforementioned Florence Pugh, by the way), and this year, won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress in The End of the F***ing World (Fresh at 93%). The British actress is about to have a much higher profile among American moviegoers, though, as she is in final negotiations with Sony Pictures to star as the late pop superstar Whitney Houston in the musical biopic, I Wanna Dance with Somebody (which takes its title from the hit single I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) off Houston s second album). I Wanna Dance with Somebody will be directed by Stella Meghie, whose most recent film was this year s The Photograph (Fresh at 74%), starring Issa Rae and LaKeith Stanfield. Meghie will be directing from a screenplay by screenwriter Anthony McCarten, who also wrote the Queen biographical musical Bohemian Rhapsody (Fresh at 60%). About casting Naomi Ackie, Meghie said, I was moved by her ability to capture the stage presence of a global icon while bringing humanity to her interior life. 4. SETH MCFARLANE BACKING REBOOT OF 1980S COMEDY HIT REVENGE OF THE NERDS (Photo by ©20th Century Fox Film Corp. courtesy Everett Collection)Like some other 1980s comedies, there are scenes in the 1984 hit Revenge of the Nerds that have glaringly not aged well at all in our post-#metoo era. Now, as many other movies from the era continue to be rebooted, Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane is preparing to do the same thing for Revenge of the Nerds, which he ll be producing for 20th Century Studios. The project already has its comedy leads lined up, as identical twin brothers Keith and Kenny Lucas, who costarred in 22 Jump Street (Certied Fresh at 84%), are set to both star and write the adapted screenplay. The only brothers in Revenge of the Nerds were of the fraternity variety, so if they play actual brothers in the remake, that alone will be a significant departure from the original premise (though the film is reportedly more of a reboot than a direct remake anyway, so the entire premise might be significantly different). As Variety puts it, instead, the contemporary reimagining will pontificate about today’s nerd culture and what even constitutes a geek in the 21st century. It s worth noting that this is not the first attempt at rebooting Revenge of the Nerds, which almost happened in 2006 until officials at Emory University in Atlanta objected to some of the raunchy hijinx in the script. 5. SAM ROCKWELL TO STAR IN MOVIE ABOUT NISSAN-CEO-TURNED-FUGITIVE (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Although he is far from a household name in the USA, the story of former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn really does read exactly like a movie script. Following an arrest in 2018 for charges of misuse of company assets, Ghosn proceded through a series of legal ins-and-outs and evasion of arrest ultimately leading in 2019 to his becoming an internationally wanted fugitive still sought by Interpol. MGM is going all in on adapting the life story of former Green Beret Michael Taylor, the American security contractor who assisted Ghosn in his evasion from arrest and capture. Sam Rockwell is now attached to produce and star as Michael Taylor in a feature film about Ghosn s escape, which will be developed concurrently to an MGM TV series which will also adapt Taylor s earlier life story (with a different actor to be cast as the younger Michael Taylor). Both the Sam Rockwell movie and the prequel TV series are being adapted from a Vanity Fair article about Michael Taylor and Carlos Ghosn, which you can read right here.6. BEN MENDELSOHN JOINS SHAILENE WOODLEY IN MISANTHROPE(Photo by JA, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Anything pre-COVID-19 feels like decades ago, even if it s only been months, but this story starts back in May of 2019 at the the Cannes Film Festival, when a serial killer film called Misanthrope was first announced. Shailene Woodley has since then been attached to star as a police officer recruited by the FBI to assist in the tracking down of a serial killer, and now we know that the lead cop in Misanthrope will be played by acclaimed Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn. Mendelsohn is currently filming the latest version of Cyrano (de Bergerac), starring Peter Dinklage, and he was also announced by Disney last week to be reprising his Skrull character in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion, along with Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.7. THIS YEAR S BLACK LIST INCLUDES STAN LEE AND JACK KIRBY MOVIE EXCELSIOR!(Photo by Gabriel Olsen/Getty Images)At the end of every year since 2005, The Black List of Unproduced Screenplays has served as a survey of hundreds of film industry executives to find which screenplays appear on the highest number of most liked screenplay lists. The Black List takes those results and publishes the titles and premises of all of the screenplays that received at least 7 mentions. This year s top pick, with 29 votes, is a cannibal drama called Headhunter about a serial killer who uses Instagram to find their next victim, until the latest target turns out to be someone totally into it (gross). #2 with 28 votes is a basketball comedy called Chang Can Dunk, and #3 with 26 votes is Neither Confirm Nor Deny, which tells the true story of a secret CIA operation that acquired a nuclear-armed USSR submarine in 1968. One of the most intriguing projects, coming in with 9 votes is Excelsior!, which tells the true story of the friendship and collaborative partnership between Marvel Comics editor and writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, who together created such characters as Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and The X-Men. Other projects on this year s Black List include Ripper (as in Jack The), Enemies Within (about Senator Joseph McCarthy and the HUAC), and Gusher (about Anna Nicole Smith). You can browse through the entire Black List of this year s screenplays (in PDF format) right here.8. SHE S ALL THAT STAR RACHAEL LEIGH COOK JOINS REMAKE HE S ALL THAT (Photo by Miramax)While Rachael Leigh Cook fans are left still awaiting the (probably unlikely) Josie and the Pussycats sequel, as it turns out, they will at least have the remake of She s All That (Rotten at 41%) called He s All That. That s because we can now report that Rachael Leigh Cook has indeed joined the cast of the gender-swapped remake, although not as the character she played in the first film (since it s a remake and not a direct sequel). Instead, Cook will play the mother of the female lead (played by Addison Rae) who, in this version, oversees the makeover of an awkward teenage boy (played by Tanner Buchanan), whereas in the original film, those two roles were the opposite genders. He s All That will be directed by Mark Waters, whose filmography includes notable Lindsay Lohan vehicles like Mean Girls (Certified Fresh at 84%) and Freaky Friday (Certified Fresh at 88%).9. YAHYA ABDUL-MATEEN II JOINS JAKE GYLLENHAAL IN AMBULANCE (Photo by Warner Bros.)Michael Bay immediately followed his run as the director of several Transformers movies with the Netflix project 6 Underground (Rotten at 36%), starring Ryan Reynolds. For his next project as director, Michael Bay is returning to a theatrically-distributed action thriller in the form of a remake of a 2005 Danish film called Ambulancen, which unsurprisingly translates to English as Ambulance. Jake Gyllenhaal has been attached to star in Ambulance since the project was first announced, but this week, we learned who two of his costars will be. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who recently has starred in two different DC Comics adaptations (as Black Manta in Aquaman, and in a role-we-won t-spoil in HBO s Watchmen) has joined the cast in an undisclosed role. The premise of the original film involved two fugitive brothers hijacking an ambulance, and it appears that the female ambulance driver they inadvertently kidnap will be played by Eiza Gonzalez, who will also soon be seen in Godzilla vs Kong, when it premieres in theaters and on HBO Max (5/21/2021).On an Apple device? (Photo by HBO)The five episodes HBO’s miniseries Chernobyl — about the 1986 reactor explosion of the Soviet nuclear power plant, the disastrous fallout, and failed government cover-up — are at once addictive and engrossing, as well as bleak, violent, heartbreaking, and horrific. If you’ve finished all of the series, which is currently Certified Fresh at 96% on the Tomatometer, and are searching for more entertainment to lose yourself in, Rotten Tomatoes has a few suggestions for your next binge.Whether it’s a story about government cover-ups, a lone hero s search for the truth, or humanity s perseverance following a devastating disaster, let us guide you toward your next small-screen addiction.IF YOU LIKE: Chernobyl s exploration of deep government cover-ups Citizenfour (2014) 96% One of the driving forces in the Chernobyl story is the enduring search for the truth amid a briar patch of lies perpetuated by the Soviet government. Mikhail Gorbachev s administration did what it could to stop the news of the accident from spreading — everything from cutting phone lines to just not letting people leave — and of course, that plan failed. America has its own complicated relationship with government interference, which is something explored quite well in Laura Poitras documentary Citizenfour. Here, we get a profoundly personal look at Edward Snowden, the infamous whistleblower who released classified documents implicating the NSA in invading the privacy of unknowing Americans. In an era of so-called fake news and conspiracy theories, the film is an eye-opening entry that not only displays how those in power can misuse their privilege, but also shows how fragile our collective concept of law and order can be when giving in to blind trust and complacency.IF YOU LIKE: Chernobyl s dramatization of environmental disaster When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts (2006) 94% (Photo by Johnny Nunez/Getty Images for Netflix)Spike Lee’s four-part docu-series When the Levees Broke gives a close-up look at the 2005 devastation Hurricane Katrina left in its wake. If HBO s New Orleans–centered series Treme was way too long or dramatized for your liking, Lee s documentary may be exactly what you re looking for. Here, he gives a necessary perspective on how the category five hurricane damaged wreaked havoc on New Orleans, exploring the faulty nature in which the levees were built. The doc gives some well-educated reasoning behind the levees demise — thanks to a collection of news footage and interviews with politicians, journalists, and engineers who provide their recollections of the event and the fallout that followed. Both Chernobyl and When the Levees Broke walk viewers through mind-blowing catastrophes that, if the research and work had been done properly, could have been prevented, acting as a valuable lesson of preparation and accountability — and a reminder that history s love of repeating itself should not be ignored.IF YOU LIKE: Chernobyl s slow-burn horror The Terror 87% The big bad in Chernobyl is completely unseen, giving audiences a constant feeling of dread as the danger in question is just there, around every corner. That same, slow-burn sense of foreboding can be found in season 1 of AMC s anthology horror series The Terror, which is Certified Fresh on 55 reviews. But while Chernobyl s threat is based on something completely real, The Terror takes the historical disappearance of The HMS Terror and HMS Erebus — two ships involved in Britain s Arctic expedition of 1845 — and puts a supernatural spin on things. Based on Dan Simmons’ bestselling novel, season 1 of the program fills in the blanks on what happened, throwing in a hellish blood-thirsty monster for good measure. With a stellar ensemble cast of British actors, including Jared Harris (who stars in Chernobyl as Valery Legasov), we highly recommend that you don t sleep on the series. (Expected August 12, season 2 of The Terror is set during World War II and centers on a series of bizarre deaths that haunt a Japanese-American community, and a young man’s investigation into the malevolent entity responsible.)IF YOU LIKE: Chernobyl s exploration of a broken political system and its community impact…The Wire 94% David Simon s The Wire expertly explored how Baltimore s political system, the city s street-level community, and its criminal underbelly are all interconnected, weaving a narrative fabric that many programs are still striving to achieve. We re not necessarily saying that Chernobyl did in five episodes what The Wire did in five seasons, but the storytelling similarities might appeal to you. Both programs shine a light on a deeper truths: that the actions of those up top are no better than those committed by the Avon Barksdales and Stringer Bells of the world. Both programs expose the faults in the bigger political systems at play, reminding viewers of the power of truth and the impact of those consequences.IF YOU LIKE: Chernobyl s theme of a  life-threatening search for the truth…Homeland 85% The quest for the truth in a wasteland of fear and deceit is a subject that will never go out of style. The truth simply doesn t care about the lies people tell. In some way or another, it will find its voice. Sometimes, that voice comes from an underdog fighting through the mud all in the name of what is right and just. In Chernobyl, it s Valery Legasov (Harris), Boris Shcherbina (Stellan Skarsgard), and Ulana Khumyuk (Emily Watson) trudging through the trenches, doing their part in getting the word out about what happened at the power plant while superseding the USSR s faulty plan to keep everything a secret. In Homeland, that person takes the shape of CIA operative Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes), who, while struggling with the daily challenges of living with a sometimes debilitating mental illness, works tirelessly, regularly sacrificing her own well-being to ensure America s safety against a whole cavalcade of outside threats.IF YOU LIKE: Chernobyl s subtle take on the KGB The Americans 96% We see the KGB mostly lurking in the shadows of Chernobyl, but the organization is definitely there. Referenced as a circle of accountability, the series gives the Soviet Union s security agency just enough screen time to portray just how sinister the outfit was. In FX s hit spy-thriller The Americans, viewers get a more up-close-and-personal perspective of the notorious organization as it focuses on Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Philip Jennings (Matthew Rhys), two seemingly average American citizens raising their family in the suburbs. But an ordinary husband and wife they are not — Elizabeth and Philip are undercover KGB officers who struggle with their own allegiances to their country while also facing the daily challenges of maintaining a marriage and family during the Cold War ’80s.IF YOU LIKE: Jared Harris Mad Men 94% We already mentioned The Terror, which should definitely be on your to-watch list. Not only is season 1 of AMC s anthology horror series supported by an epic ensemble cast of British talent — including Ciarán Hinds and Tobias Menzies — it s fronted by Harris. If you ve only recently discovered the actor s work, you should know that Harris has been thriving in the world of prestige television for quite some time. His villainous portrayal of David Robert Jones on Fox s sci-fi thriller Fringe, his noble King George VI in Netflix s The Crown, and his insurgent Anderson Dawes in Amazon s The Expanse are all worth checking out. That said, it was the actor s Emmy-nominated performance as Lane Pryce in Mad Men — the financial officer who helped bring ad agency Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce into existence — that helped cement him as a powerful performer in the Peak TV game.Like this? eadpool movies. On Tuesday, Reynolds posted a photo of Deadpool wearing Mickey ears and riding a school bus to celebrate the acquisition. What it means for the future is anyone’s guess.5. Will Galactus Be the Phase 4 Big Bad?(Photo by Marvel)After Thanos presumably gets his comeuppance in Avengers: Endgame, will Marvel Studios sow the seeds of another intergalactic Big Bad? If they attempt such a thing, Fantastic Four antagonist Galactus would be of a size and shape worthy to follow Thanos — even his headgear is more thrilling! But that is assuming Phase 4 will have a Big Bad. And come to think of it, the term “Phase 4” rarely comes up in Feige’s comments these days.It took three phases and 22 films — now known as The Infinity Saga — to get to Thanos, even if he was introduced in the first Avengers film. So Phase 4, if we’re still using that term, may just see the regrouping of the heroes who survive Endgame and the introduction of the Eternals and Shang-Chi. If that is the case, the new big bad would be introduced in a potential fifth Avengers film in, say, 2022 or wherever Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ends up on the schedule. It would also provide ample time for Feige to plan the integration of the X-Men and the Fantastic Four into the MCU. And what better way to introduce Marvel’s first family than by the Avengers searching for them ahead of Galactus’s arrival? (We’re maybe getting carried away here, but we’re damn excited.)Of course, we are assuming the next few years of MCU storytelling will use the same momentum as Phases 1-3. But considering Marvel Comics has been using the same narrative conventions in its event crossover comics for the last few decades — to say nothing of the financial rewards the studio established by using the technique — it seems a safe bet that Captain Marvel, Ant-Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, the Guardians, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four will unite to face some universe-shattering threat 22 films from now, if not sooner.6. What of the Defenders and The Gifted?(Photo by Sarah Shatz/Netflix)Turning our attention to television, the Fox acquisition comes at an odd time for Marvel’s live-action initiatives. On ABC, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was renewed for a seventh season well ahead of its season 6 debut this summer. Cloak Dagger returns to Freeform in a few weeks, and reports indicate Runaways’ second season was successful enough at Hulu for a third year to be all but a certainty. But over on Netflix, all of the Marvel shows were quickly cancelled following the debuts of their most recent seasons (except for Jessica Jones, which was cancelled ahead of its still-unscheduled season 3 debut). And from the way Netflix structures its deals, it will be some time before any of those characters can resurface on Disney platforms like Hulu (which the company now has a 60 percent stake in) or Disney+.Meanwhile, the new Disney streaming platform indicates Iger’s desire for a single Marvel may not be in the cards just yet. Disney+’s Marvel television series will be produced by Marvel Studios, while all the television efforts to date are works of Marvel Entertainment. Yes, there is a difference, as the former is a division of The Walt Disney Studio, while the latter is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company. In short: Disney operates two Marvel companies and, sometimes, their interests do not align. This is ultimately why the Defenders did not make cameos in Avengers: Infinity War and why the final seasons of their shows saw no one turning to dust. From the Fox standpoint, the acquisition offered an incentive to end Legion after three seasons on FX. While Hawley recently said he always saw the program as a three-year story, the changing nature of Marvel TV no doubt helped the executives OK the idea of ending it now. Meanwhile, The Gifted’s future on the Fox broadcast network remains up in the air. The network — which was retained by newly minted Fox Corp. — plans to hold onto several popular series now owned by Disney (which acquired Fox s TV studio branch as well), including The Simpsons. But The Gifted is not exactly popular. Also, there is no telling how it may interfere with Marvel Entertainment’s plans going forward or Marvel Studios’ long-term goals.Fox later answered the media attention around the completion of the acquistion with a trailer:In the meantime, Hulu and Marvel Entertainment announced an initiative to create four animated series for the platform, potentially leading to a stronger relationship between the two branches of the Disney empire. As it happens, Disney wants Marvel content to stay in house, so Disney brands like ABC, Disney+, Freeform, and Hulu are the places you will see future Marvel TV shows. Additionally, the newly acquired FX networks may prove a good outlet as well for projects more in the vein of Legion. Maybe the long-lost New Warriors will find a home on one of those channels.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

(Photo by Netflix)The Best Witch TV Shows (And the Worst)It s October, so the fires are burning and cauldrons are bubbling — but it doesn’t have to be autumn to embrace all things witchy. (Of course it helps, but every season is a good season for magic.)We ve gathered our favorite television series where the occult takes center stage: Think your Sabrina the Teenage Witch(es), your Charmed sisters, even your nose-twitching suburban housewives. Not every show here is specifically about witches, but they all contain major characters of the bruja persuasion. Think: the powerful wife of time-traveling Ichabod Crane in Sleepy Hollow, Red Priestess Melisandre in Game of Thrones, and Nightcomer leader Evelyn Poole on Penny Dreadful. And yeah, The Vampire Diaries was mainly about blood-sucking supernatural creatures, but witches played a major role on the series (and an even bigger one on spinoff The Originals). This isn t a ranking of the witches themselves — though you can rank your favorites here if you want! — but rather a ranking of the series on which they appear by their series-level Tomatometer score. For those shows without series scores, they re listed them alphabetically Z-A ahead of the scored shows listed below.

The early months of 2020 saw unprecedented changes in the movie industry as Hollywood attempted figure out how best to respond a global crisis. Part of that response was to bring movies to the home market earlier than usual, with at least one film, Trolls World Tour, opting to release on home entertainment media on the same day as its scheduled theatrical debut. For others, it has meant postponing opening weekends, even if no new date has been announced (you can find those films in our TBD section below). With all of that said, there is still a wealth of exciting movies this year, even if we have to wait a little bit longer for some of them. We ve still got a new entry from Pixar in Soul, and Gal Gadot embraces the 80s in Wonder Woman 1984. Plus, we re also getting a slew of new thrillers, horror films, animated treats, action-adventures, and more. The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly turned things upside down this year, but there are still some things we can look forward to, so start marking these titles in your calendar. [Updated on 11/5/20]Jan-Mar | Apr-June | July-Sep | Oct-Dec | TBDBreakdown of 2020 Movie DelaysThe Best Movies of 2019 | The Most Anticipated Movies of 2021JanuaryThe Grudge (2020) 21%Directed by: Nicolas PesceStarring: Andrea Riseborough, Betty Gilpin, John Cho, Demian Bichir, Lin ShayeOpening on: January 3, 2020A remake of the American remake of the Japanese horror favorite, Grudge once again focuses on a vengeful ghost with a long memory. Fans of Ritchie s early work are excited to see him at the helm of another crime caper, and it s hard to beat the sight of a slimy-looking Hugh Grant playing against type. The Rhythm Section (2020) 29%Directed by: Reed MoranoStarring: Blake Lively, Jude Law, Sterling K. In this version, that couple is played by Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, indicating it may lean a little harder on the comedy than the drama, and what more perfect way to celebrate Valentine s Day than to watch another couple in a passive-aggressive tug of war?Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) 63%Directed by: Jeff FowlerStarring: James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, Tika Sumpter, Neal McDonoughOpening on: February 14, 2020The first trailer for this adaptation of the classic video game famously drew the ire of Sonic fans around the world, prompting the studio to announce that it would be updating the look of the character. This led to a push back from its original 2019 release date – but on the plus side, those same fans were all about Jim Carrey as villain Dr. Robotnik. An updated trailer featuring a redesigned Sonic that was released in November of 2019 was met with wholehearted approval from fans, so here s hoping the rest of the film is up to snuff.Blumhouse's Fantasy Island (2020) 8%Directed by: Jeff WadlowStarring: Lucy Hale, Maggie Q, Portia Doubleday, Charlotte McKinney, Michael Peña, Michael RookerOpening on: February 14, 2020Moviegoers of a certain age may remember the popular TV drama Fantasy Island, in which visitors to the titular vacation spot would be granted a chance to live out their wildest fantasies for a price. Harrison Ford takes the lead human role, while Buck himself looks to be entirely CGI.The Invisible Man (2020) 91%Directed by: Leigh WhannellStarring: Elisabeth Moss, Aldis Hodge, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Storm ReidOpening on: February 28, 2020After 2017 s The Mummy failed to launch Universal s cinematic universe of classic monsters, they handed the reins of The Invisible Man over to their horror partners at Blumhouse for a modern, updated standalone feature. We think ? Originally scheduled for a July release, the film will now open in 70 markets worldwide on August 26 and in select theaters in the US on Labor Day weekend.I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020) 82%Directed by: Charlie KaufmanStarring: Jesse Plemons, Jessie Buckley, Toni Collette, David ThewlisOpening on: September 4, 2020 (on Netflix)Writer-director Charlie Kaufman (Anomalisa, writer of Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) returns to the big screen after a five-year hiatus.

(Photo by courtesy of HBO)As this year s Marvel s Spider-Man proved, games based on popular film and television properties are best served when they don t attempt to retell the same stories we ve already seen on the big and small screens. Following in Spidey s spandex footsteps, a number of new and upcoming games have adopted similar approaches, cleverly expanding on existing universes rather than retreading them for the interactive entertainment medium. From blockbuster film franchises (Fast Furious) to streaming serial hits (Game of Thrones), more and more of our favorite fictional universes are offering fresh, original opportunities for fans to interact with their characters, live in their worlds, and even shape their stories.Whether you re a gamepad-clutching Potter fan, a Ghostbusting smartphone geek, or a virtual reality enthusiast with a superhero complex, these 12 titles include some that should keep you busy between TV binge sessions and movie marathons this holiday season, a few great video games to give as gifts for Christmas, and others that you can look forward to in 2019.How to give mobile games as gifts: iOS | AndroidOut NowREIGNS: GAME OF THRONESDeveloper: NerialPublisher: Devolver DigitalSystems: iOS, Android, SteamRelease Date: Available nowGame of Thrones doesn t return to HBO until next year, but winter has already come in the latest game based on the Seven Kingdoms-conquering series. 七宗罪游戏 Jerry Seinfeld Will Turn One of His Stand-Up Jokes Into a Netflix Movie About the Creation of Pop-TartsA movie about nothing? Kinda, but we still can’t wait for this one: expanding on a joke from his stand-up routine, Jerry Seinfeld will star in and direct Unfrosted, a Netflix movie all about the creation of Pop-Tarts, that classic breakfast toaster pastry. (Deadline)Seinfeld will also produce Unfrosted, which he wrote with Spike Feresten and Barry Marder. Production will begin next spring on the movie, which sparked from a joke the comedian told about the joy of discovering Pop-Tarts as a child. “How did they know that there would be a need for a frosted fruit-filled, heated rectangle in the same shape as the box it comes in, and with the same nutrition as the box it comes in?” Seinfeld mused. In 2012, Seinfeld deconstructed the joke, which he wrote across two years, and shared his joke-writing process (which famously involves yellow legal pads and Bic pens) in a New York Times video that hints at the comedic potential of Unfrosted. For the record, despite the movie’s title, we all agree that frosted Pop-Tarts are always the preferred Pop-Tarts, right?I May Destroy You, Unorthodox, Ted Lasso, and The Good Lord Bird Are Among the Year s Peabody Award Winners(Photo by Apple TV+)The Peabody Awards, for excellence in “storytelling that reflects the social issues and the emerging voices of our day,” were announced this week, and TV-related projects recognized for the 81st annual honors include Ted Lasso (Apple TV+), The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (CBS), The Owl House on Disney Channel, The Good Lord Bird (Showtime), Unorthodox (Netflix), 76 Days (MTV), Whose Vote Counts on PBS, VICE on Showtime: Losing Ground (Showtime), I May Destroy You (HBO), La Llorona (Shudder), Collective (HBO Europe), Immigration Nation (Netflix), Crip Camp (Netflix),  PBS NewsHour: Coverage of the COVID-19 Pandemic (PBS), Small Axe (Amazon Prime), The Cave (NatGeo), Welcome to Chechnya (HBO), ABC News 2020: Breona Taylor (ABC), PBS NewsHour: Desperate Journey (PBS), Cops and Robbers (Netflix), and Stillwater (Apple TV+). For the complete list of winners, check out the Peabody site.In other awards news, the Critics Choice Real TV Awards were announced this week, with RuPaul’s Drag Race (VH1) tying for Best Competition Series with Netflix’s The Great British Baking Show; The Masked Singer (Fox) and The Voice (NBC) tying for Best Competition Series: Talent/Variety; and Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and Apple TV+’s The Oprah Conversation tying for Best Structured Series.
