亚博手机网站采用百度引擎0(Baidu 8)(Photo by HBO)Expectations for the final season of Game of Thrones were higher than the Red Keep’s tallest spire, and, unfortunately, fans and critics alike were not universally impressed with the way creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss ended the story. Unlike the previous seven seasons — all of which are Certified Fresh with Tomatometer scores well into the 90s — season 8 is not only the lowest-scoring season on the Tomatometer, it is also the first-ever Rotten season of HBO’s fantasy series. How does that work? Let s do a bit of math: While the average score of each of season 8’s episodes is a Fresh 68%, a number of season-level reviews (those that consider the season in its entirety) published following the finale have brought the overall season score down into the Rotten range.“This final season was all about big-huge set pieces, and a lot of the complexity burned away,” wrote Entertainment Weekly’s Darren Franich of the season as a whole. And Slate’s Willa Paskin noted in her review of the series finale, “Benioff and Weiss organized their entire series around an ending that they didn’t write to.”But Thrones is not the only beloved series that critics felt whiffed its final at-bat. Series with high expectations for their final episodes include everything from HBO’s bro-tastic showbiz satire Entourage to PBS’ prestige TV detective drama Sherlock. And though those expectations might not have been quite as high as the dizzying, dragon-y heights that GoT needed to live up to, both of those series similarly seemed to let down longtime viewers.Below, Rotten Tomatoes has gathered a list of beloved series whose early seasons were high-scoring and usually Certified Fresh — meaning they all received a large number of reviews, with many from top critics, and a score of more than 75% on the Tomatometer — and whose last season or two descended into Rotten territory. Some shows, like The Office, The West Wing, or How I Met Your Mother, managed to turn Rotten penultimate seasons around into Fresh final ones (which is why those three are not included below). But others, including Game of Thrones, Dexter, and Arrested Development, take their place among history’s best-reviewed shows with poorly reviewed endings.A note: We’ve only included series with robust scores, and we would also like to reiterate that this is not an indictment of the included series, but rather a numbers-focused presentation of score drops.Game of Thrones 89% (Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Highest-rated season: Game of Thrones: Season 4 (2014) 97%Final season:  Game of Thrones: Season 8 (2019) 55%Drop: 44%While showrunners Benioff and Weiss were never going to please everyone, critics pointed to the series penultimate episode, The Bells, as a prime example of how a transportive, well-acted, smartly written drama even non-genre fans can appreciate (per the RT Critics Consensus for season 1) could devolve into such a divisive experience for fans. The Critics Consensus for The Bells  in particular echoes a common complaint from the show s closing moments: too much plot in too little time muddles the story and may leave some viewers feeling its conclusions are unearned. Dexter 71% (Photo by Showtime)Highest-rated season: Dexter: Season 2 (2007) 96%Final season: Dexter: Season 8 (2013) 33%Drop: 61%Seasons 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7 of Showtime’s serial killer drama are all Certified Fresh, but seasons 6 and 8 plunged into Rotten territory. The Critics Consensus for season 6 counts “heavy-handed symbolism, an unimpressive villain, and a redundant arc for America s favorite serial killer” among the reasons for its low score, while the season 8 summary calls it a “a bitterly disappointing final season that is so hesitant to punish its anti-hero for his misdeeds, it opts to punish its audience instead.”Weeds 70% (Photo by Showtime)Highest-rated season: Weeds: Season 2 (2006) 100%Final season: Weeds: Season 8 (2012) 40%Drop: 60%The dark comedy followed suburban widow Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) as she began to deal pot to make ends meet following the unexpected death of her husband — and eventually transformed into an international drug kingpin. But while the first season was Certified Fresh and the subsequent ones were generally well-liked, RT’s Critics Consensus for the eighth and final season notes that the “final installment burns the series remaining goodwill down to a sorry roach with perfunctory plotting and a sense that this story no longer resembles the one fans fell in love with.”The Killing 68% (Photo by AMC)Highest-rated season: The Killing: Season 1 (2011) 94%Final season: The Killing: Season 4 (2014) 47%Drop: 53%The Seattle-set slow-burn mystery pursued by homicide detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) started off with “thoughtful writing, believable characters, and realistic horror, even if its season finale was unsatisfying,” per the first season’s Critics Consensus. By the fourth season, resurrected by Netflix following AMC’s cancellation, it succumbed to “silliness” and strayed into “distractingly overwrought territory.”True Blood 70% (Photo by HBO)Highest-rated season: True Blood: Season 3 (2010) 91%Final season: True Blood: Season 7 (2014) 44%Drop: 51%HBO’s vampire drama, based on the Southern Gothic Sookie Stackhouse book series by bestselling author Charlaine Harris, took a few seasons for critics to warm up to it (it started at a barely Fresh 61% in season 1 and reached a series high of 95% in season 3). But the third season’s “graphic thrills, steamy romance, and biting satire for its fans” made way for a Rotten final two seasons, as the series ran out of steam and its seventh season was “content to limp along on familiar plot points.”Arrested Development 74% (Photo by Netflix)Highest-rated season: Arrested Development: Season 1 (2003) 100%Final season: Arrested Development: Season 5 (2018) 55%Drop: 45%, though the drop from season 1 to season 4 was even more drastic at 73%The first season of the formerly short-lived Fox gem is among the rare seasons Certified Fresh at 100%, and the subsequent two seasons that aired on the broadcast network are also strong with 94% and 100% Tomatometer scores, respectively. Netflix’s revival, on the other hand, can’t quite “live up to its own past.” At least the series’ fifth season (55%) was a bit of a second chance for the cast and creators, as season 4’s Critics Consensus put it simply: “They ve made a huge mistake.” (Though the series has not officially been canceled, there s no word on whether Netflix plans to make another season.)UnREAL 81% (Photo by Lifetime)Highest-rated season: UnREAL: Season 1 (2015) 98%Final season: UnREAL: Season 4 () 50%Drop: 43%All three seasons of the dark, Bachelor-skewering drama that aired on Lifetime were Certified Fresh and brought renewed respect to the female-focused network. The fourth season, however, “fizzled out” and went directly to Hulu (“but the clever antics, confidence, and high energy” remained intact, per the season 4 CC).Sherlock 78% (Photo by Laurence Cendrowicz/Hartswood Films & MASTERPIECE)Highest-rated season: Sherlock: Season 2 (2012) 94%Final season: Sherlock: Season 4 (2017) 54%Drop: 39%The first three full seasons of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s modern Sherlock Holmes adaptations were all Certified Fresh with scores in the 90s. But the 2015 Christmas special wasn’t quite as well-received, and the fourth season, which came four years after season 3, was marred by “the lofty expectations created by the series lengthy hiatus.” Hm, sounds familiar…Entourage 66% (Photo by HBO)Highest-rated season: Entourage: Season 5 (2008) 76%Final season: Entourage: Season 8 (2011) 46%Drop: 30%While the Hollywood antics of heartthrob Vinny Chase (Adrian Grenier) and his hangers-on were mostly well-received — most seasons of the HBO comedy are sitting comfortably in the 70s — the seventh season saw a turn as poorly received as Chase’s fictional epic, Medellin. As season 8’s Critics Consensus put it, “With Entourage s best stories behind it, the series finale feels like a merciful end.”Prison Break 60% (Photo by Fox)Highest-rated season: Prison Break: Season 1 (2005) 77%Final season: Prison Break: Season 4 (2008) 50%Drop: 27%The Fox drama’s self-explanatory title meant that the series was always going to have to fight against its own premise — there are only so many prisons to break out of, after all — but after a Certified Fresh debut season and a second installment that maintained the series’ “propulsive momentum,” per season 2’s CC, things went downhill. The third and fourth seasons were both Rotten at 50% — and while the original series finale delivered closure for fans, “the season s ludicrous, plot-breaking twists betray the feeling that this saga should have ended a jailbreak or two before.” Fox’s 2017 revival nearly a decade after the series’ original end, didn’t fare much better: “familiar faces and frenetic action aren t enough to make up for a plot that manages to bore while beggaring belief,” per the Critics Consensus.Like this?

After breaking out in the late ’80s with a string of Certified Fresh hits like The Untouchables, Bull Durham, and Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner made himself a marquee name with his stoic, unshakeable performances. In the following decades, he played everything from the romantic leading man opposite Whitney Houston in The Bodyguard to the gunslinging lawman Wyatt Earp in Lawrence Kasdan’s biopic about the historical figure. Recently, his no-nonsense persona has lent itself to the roles of a supervisor (Hidden Figures), inspirational leader (McFarland, USA), patriarch (TV’s Yellowstone), and even Superman’s dad (Man of Steel). In his latest movie, Thomas Bezucha’s Let Him Go, Costner once again takes the reins of a familiar horse. Here, he plays George Blackledge, a stern-faced retired sheriff in 1950s North Dakota who suffers the devastating loss of his son in the film’s opening moments. George and his wife, Margaret (Diane Lane), grieve for their son’s accidental death by helping his widow, Lorna (Kayli Carter), with their new grandson– but the solution is temporary. Lorna decides to remarry and takes George and Margaret’s grandson – their last remaining link to their son – away without warning. When Margaret decides to go after her to see why she left so suddenly, George begrudgingly supports her and defends her when the going gets tough. Ahead of the movie s release, Costner spoke to Rotten Tomatoes about his fondness for a good story,  acting opposite his Man of Steal co-star Lane once more, and working with Lesley Manville. (Photo by Kimberly French / © Focus Features )Monica Castillo for Rotten Tomatoes: What first interested you about Let Him Go?Kevin Costner: I m always looking for the next great script, either trying to create it or what comes along. Too often, they re not great, but sometimes they re good and they just don t fit. It s hard to do; it s hard to write a great screenplay. As I started reading, I was drawn into it. I didn t know where it was going or where it was going to go. It got worse and worse in the best sense. There was a dread that started to happen, and there was an authenticness about it. A love story was emerging even against this kind of journey that was happening. These two people who had history together, who loved each other, and you saw them completely not together, so to speak, but what kept them together was love. We have a beautiful screenplay and really that s what got me to say yes.Speaking of that central relationship, how did you and Diane Lane create that rapport?Costner: The idea of working with Diane, that s always going to be a yes, but not in the wrong situation. When I work with her or anybody, I want it to succeed wildly. I want it to feel to an audience that, “Wow, that was fresh. That was different. I didn t see that coming.” You still want to feel like something surprised you. That s what I look forward to. They re not just jobs or decisions to be a way from home. I have to try to think of what was best about what it could be. (Photo by Kimberly French / © Focus Features )Your character, George, is pretty stoic compared to Margaret, Lane’s character. How did you decide what went into that performance and balance the relationship dynamics?Women that have strong wills are not new to this century or this decade. Women have been leading men in certain ways to places because they feel morally, ethically, right, and drag their men sometimes in these situations that are over their head. Why does the man go? Because in the end, he loves her and wants to protect her from herself. And in the end, he can t.Speaking of strong women, your character also faces off against Lesley Manville’s strong-willed matriarch. What was that experience like? She’s kind of like Bette Davis, just so formidable. That family you just knew was so bad. They were just people on the fringe and we [the characters] got dragged into it. I think what s so cool about the movie is I could feel it coming. The audience could feel it coming. The only one that couldn t feel it coming was Diane, my wife. It s a surprising movie without being a surprise.(Photo by Kimberly French / © Focus Features )Let Him Go feels like a subtle period piece, with time-specific details on the edges of this timeless family drama. How did you bring that sense of mid-century midwestern life into your performance?Costner: The actor has a few tools at their disposal. Their voice, how are they going to play it? Their walk, how are they gonna walk it? Their hair, how are they going to look? How are they going to exist in that particular era? What s going to inform without shouting out.The West and Midwest feature so prominently throughout your career. Is there something about these regions that appeals to you? Costner: Maybe you ll think about it this way or won t, but how I do is that they lend themselves to people having to solve their problems on their own. As people extended out, they ended up solving their own problems with a level of violence. The violence was random, and those who could take advantage of people did. Some people find a lot of drama in the courtroom and a lot of drama in the police precinct, and I find a lot of drama in the great open spaces where sometimes it s you and somebody else and you re wondering what it is they want from you. There s a lot of drama in that.Let Him Go is in limited release from November 6, 2020.

HBO announced a series version of the game in March. The 2013 adventure game centers around Joel, a post-apocalyptic smuggler who is tasked with getting 14-year-old Ellie out of a dangerous quarantine zone and across the United States in an increasingly violent, harsh journey. In addition to his work on Chernobyl, Renck also directed episodes of The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, and Bates Motel, so he is well experienced to handle the action, drama, and zombie-like creatures of The Last of Us series. The award-winning game’s creative director, Neil Druckmann, will also work on the series as a writer and executive, along with Chernobyl creator and Emmy-winning writer Craig Mazin. The series may also include stories from the game’s upcoming sequel, The Last of Us Part II, which is scheduled to be released on June 19 for PlayStation. The original game has sold more than 20 million copies.Oh, about that casting: How about TWD and The Punisher alum Jon Bernthal for Joel and Unbelievable Golden Globe–nominee Kaitlyn Dever as Ellie?

Nearly 60 years ago in 1962, King Kong and Godzilla squared off in Japan, and King Kong shoved a giant tree into Godzilla’s mouth. The two would engage in a back-and-forth battle that featured atomic breath and lightning strikes, and King Kong would ultimately leave the grueling brawl victorious. The Ishirō Honda-directed film, King Kong vs. Godzilla, was the third Godzilla film produced by Toho Studios, and it was a wildly ambitious crossover event that was a smashing success in Japan, as it sold 11.2 million tickets during its initial theatrical run. In other words, audiences went bananas for it.Decades later, both Godzilla and King Kong have appeared in dozens of movies and animated series that have seen them battling three-headed monsters, genetically-modified roses with sharp teeth, and New York concrete. The two haven’t shared a screen together since that colossal battle in 1962, which is why the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong feels like such an epic event. To get to this brawl, Legendary Studios embarked on a kaiju-sized film series called the “MonsterVerse” that kicked off in 2014 with Godzilla (2014), then continued with Kong: Skull Island (2017) and, most recently, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). The three films have set the chess pieces, and now the two gigantic titans will tussle for the ultimate checkmate.(Photo by Everett Collection)In honor of their rematch, we rewatched the King Kong vs. Godzilla Versus episode that was released in 2019 and analyzed their filmographies in an attempt to crown a statistical champion based on box office receipts, property destruction, amount of screen time, and Tomatometer and Audience scores. Two monsters (and their many variations) enter, and only one leaves (unless there’s a tie, in which case, come back for the rematch).*Quick note Not all of the King Kong and Godzilla films have Tomatometer scores or reliable box office data. That’s why the numbers fluctuate in each round. Also, we’re sticking to feature-length films, and leaving out the animated series that both have appeared in.Round 1 TomatometerGodzilla: 61.8% average (32 films)King Kong: 55.8% average (8 films)Highest rated: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), 100%Lowest rated: King Kong Lives (1986), 0%(Photo by TriStar courtesy Everett Collection)It’s only fitting that we kick off the battle with an incredibly close match-up in which the Tomatometer averages are separated by a measly 3.8%. Both franchises started off really well as 1933 s King Kong (Certified Fresh at 98% on the Tomatometer) and 1954 s Godzilla (Certified Fresh at 93%) were both blockbusters that wowed people with their innovative photography and beautiful miniature sets. However, the quality of the films began to mirror one of Godzilla’s fights He’s winning! He’s losing… He’s winning! He’s losing…What sealed the deal for Godzilla’s victory is the 0% score for 1986’s King Kong Lives. The movie famously tells the story of what happens after Kong survives the fall from the Empire State Building. In short, he gets a heart transplant, eats some alligators, finds a soulmate, and fathers a child. The dreaded 0% Tomatometer score reeks about as much as Godzilla’s atomic breath, and it took 29 years before Peter Jackson’s Certified Fresh King Kong put the titan back on the big screen in 2005.Godzilla: 1 Kong: 0Round 2 Audience ScoreGodzilla: 59.5% average (33 films)King Kong 46.8% average (8 films)Highest rated: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, 95%Lowest rated: King Kong Lives, 17%(Photo by TriStar courtesy Everett Collection)With an almost Fresh 59.5% Audience Score average, Godzilla wins another round. meanwhile in the upside down pic.twitter.com/BtPlMjy0pS Stranger Things (@Stranger_Things) October 1, 2020Filming had only been underway for about a month when the COVID-19 pandemic cut production short, but it resumed again at the very end of September. Needless to say, the show was certainly not going to be ready to air until the latter half of 2021 at the earliest. Up to this point, each season came out around the time of year when it took place — i.e. Season 2 took place around Halloween and was released in October, Season 3 took place over summer break and came out around the 4th of July — and the fact that the upcoming season takes place during the school year (and, judging from social media clues, in the fall) led us to believe Season 4 could have potentially premiered in the fall of 2021. Then, of course, we got the teaser released on August 6, 2021, which didn t show us much of anything new, but declared that Season 4 would drop sometime in 2022. Is it possible that Netflix will hold it until the fall of 2022 to keep with tradition? Maybe, but that means we ve got a long wait ahead of us.Will There Be More? There had been plenty of speculation that the fourth season of Stranger Things would be the last — especially since the young actors definitely don t look like middle schoolers anymore. But in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ross Duffer said that the story isn t wrapping up just yet. Season 4 won t be the end, he said. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic-induced shut-down] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story. What s Up With This Eleven Teaser? While there s still no premiere date, the powers that be at Netflix know that multiple years is way too long to go without any new Stranger Things content whatsoever — which is why they released a new (mysterious, of course) teaser in May hinting at some previously unrevealed information about Season 4.The minute-long clip is focused on Eleven, featuring what appears to be a flashback of the facility where our favorite superpowered teen was raised. As the clock strikes 3 (you ll recall we know episode 2 is titled  Tick Tok Mr. Clock ), children play games (including what looks like Demogorgon chess — Queen s Gambit crossover confirmed! kidding) in a medical/science-type facility. A magic 8 ball reads signs point to yes and a Plinko game with discs that landed on numbers 4, 7 and 8. A man says, Good morning, children as the camera pans to a door with 11 on it — and our Eleven (played by Brown), startled, opens her eyes. What does it mean?! And are we getting more?! That s up to us to analyze and wait until Netflix decides to give us some more info.Stranger Things 4 will premiere on Netflix in 2022.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.
