William or the Young Man in Black from Westworld) didn t waste any time searching for his next project. After a hard-fought audition, the 20-year acting veteran was cast as the lead in the new Epix drama Perpetual Grace, LTD alongside Sir Ben Kingsley. The House of Cards alum quickly plunged himself into the world of grifters and shady characters for this neo-noir thriller, a series with a twisty plot that will make Twin Peaks fans feel right at home. A strangely entertaining tale about robbing a fraud church that would make David Lynch proud, Perpetual Grace, LTD is built for cult-classic appreciation. Only four episodes into this season and we don t know what s in store for James (Simpson) and Pastor Byron Brown (Kingsley), but the first half already has us itching with anticipation.Just hours before he screened the latest episode at the ATX Television Film Festival in early June, Simpson spoke with Rotten Tomatoes about working with Kingsley, what he s streaming, and a graphic television program he finds surprisingly soothing. What’s appointment viewing for you?(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Jimmi Simpson: Do shows even come out every week any more?Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: Well, You were on one last year.[Laughs] No, you re right, if we were not on hiatus, yes I would definitely say Westworld. It s wonderful for that kind of Dickensian quality: here s a little bit and you ll wait, and you ll enjoy waiting. What’s on your streaming queue?PEN15. They re about 5 to 10 years after my time. I was, like, in college when they talking about these things, the preemptive and internet chat stuff, but it s the application of everything that we learned, growing up now as 30-year-olds. They re 30, and having the emotional intelligence and the verbal articulation to share the lessons that we all couldn t process at that time. It just feels like it brings the human growth experience, the adolescence experience, the confusion, into this world where we understand why we do all these things, we understand the trouble we got into, and why we made the bad calls we made, and what actually built who we are as adults. And then it s f ing hilarious. I think it resonates on a sociological level in a way that no comedy show has ever to me. I was raised on Wonder Years, so that s the closest show to this, but that s still an adult tale. It s a middle-aged person describing that experience and we re looking at it from a middle-aged point of view. Whereas, these two women are attacking it from the perspective of a 30-year-old, just with the knowledge and the wisdom of a 13-year-old. I can t believe how good it is. I can t believe how on point both of their performances are. Each time I m just stunned. They bring me to tears about every episode, and then I m laughing my ass off. It s just so good and they call out what needs to be called out, and they let themselves make all those mistakes, so that should win all the awards. I think it should get a Nobel Peace Prize.(Photo by Liam Daniel/HBO)Anything else?Absolutely: Chernobyl.Great show, but kinda depressing. Well, it s only depressing if we let it keep happening. I presume that filmmaker knew what he was doing when he was saying, Look at the mistakes they made, and let s try to avoid that, the misinformation. If you look at the United States of America right now and the daily misinformation from our commander-in-chief, he says it to protect his little ego, and he does it at the expense of human lives. In Chernobyl all they re doing is protecting their ego, the ego of the state, the collective ego. But isn t a person s ego even more nefarious, even more worthless to go into such terrible pitches of ill truth? It s stunning to me. We all want to learn lessons, we all want to be better, but it s also a world where everyone wants to watch shows and be really entertained. So how do you achieve both? How do you get your message across, and make one of the most clearly articulate and beautiful, visual stories on TV right now? Every time he sets the camera or doesn t set the camera, every push in, every performance is captivating. It s film at its best, I think, because I just love biography, so to give audiences all of this pertinent information and all these warning signs under the guise of “Holy f this is so entertaining!” That s hard to do man. And so I just clap my ass off for that show. What’s on your DVR?Believe it or not, I unwind to the Forensic Files. I discovered because my wife found it. She s from the U.K., so she s always looking for the next true crime thing that America has. And she found these half-hour investigations into awful crimes, and how forensics got to the bottom of it. At first I was like, oh my God! But with the climate of the world, with so much sadness and so much devastation and no checks and balances, we don t have justice. We have racism at its highest since the civil rights movement. So these little half-hour episodes, they re horrific crimes, but each one is foiled. Each time the bad guy s gotten, and you know at the end of it you re going to see the bad guy thrown in jail. So despite how awful it is you can say, Thank God, evil monsters do go to jail in the end.” They ll get them every time! That feeling is calming to me. I m less of the superheroes guy. That flight of fancy doesn t quite suit me. I m like, that s not happening! That s not real. But when we go over to Forensic Files, justice pans out. Without a cape. What’s coming soon that you can’t wait for?I don t know if it s soon, but Pen15 season 2.

Golden Year Award 2020Last year, we introduced the Golden Year Award to honor the one person who absolutely owned the year, whether it was on TV, in movies, or behind the scenes, and Rotten Tomatoes fans crowned Keanu Reeves the winner. This year, while the voting on Fan Favorite Actor and Fan Favorite Actress did spill over into here a bit, the winner was the late Chadwick Boseman. We all mourned when we learned that Boseman had succumbed to the colon cancer he had been fighting since 2016 something that no one but those closest to him were aware of. His career is marked by powerful performances in films about some of the most influential Black figures in American history, from Jackie Robinson to Thurgood Marshall, and his portrayal of T Challa in Marvel s Black Panther endeared him to comic book fans everywhere. So it s fitting that Boseman s final performances would come in Da 5 Bloods, a timely Spike Lee joint that dropped just as the world was reacting to the death of George Floyd, and Ma Rainey s Black Bottom, the August Wilson adaptation that would earn him a posthumous Best Actor Academy Award nomination. We would be hard pressed to argue against this choice. The order below reflects the number of total votes cast for each person by users in a poll that ran on RT from March 10 to April 13.« Previous Category Next Category »Chadwick BosemanKind of difficult to argue against this one, right? The man was an icon for a younger generation, and if his bright future was ever in doubt, one need only to look at his final two powerful performances in Da 5 Blood and Ma Rainey s Black Bottom, the latter of which is likely to win him a posthumous Oscar for Best Actor.Pedro PascalThe man best known for getting his face destroyed in Game of Thrones is officially a household name himself, thanks to prominent roles in The Mandalorian and Wonder Woman 1984.Tom HollandHolland once again comes in just behind Pedro Pascal after a year that saw him waxing magically nostalgic in Onward and live dangerously in The Devil All the Time.Anya Taylor-JoyIt s possible that Anya Taylor-Joy helped inspire people to take up chess again or learn it for the first time after her Netflix series The Queen s Gambit became a huge hit, but she also proved she could do Jane Austen (Emma.) and wield a Soulsword (The New Mutants).ZendayaShe won the Fan Favorite Actress category handily, thanks to a history-making win at the Emmys for her work on HBO s Euphoria and another dramatic turn in Malcolm Marie.« Previous Category Next Category »九游会ag登录(Photo by Starz)Starz’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel American Gods for premium cable TV brought the the author s characters to life and introduced viewers to the deities of ancient mythology and the new ones hoping to take their place. Captain Marvel is finally out in theaters and while it is set some 20 years prior to the current issues facing the Avengers following Avengers: Infinity War, the film offered a few intriguing clues to next month’s Avengers: Endgame and the ways Marvel’s newest hero may be involved in it. Also, there may even be some clues to the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the events of Endgame buried within Captain Marvel s plot. So let s dive in and see what we can guess about Marvel Studios next few moves from its most recent release.Of course, there are spoilers from here on out. Key spoilers in fact, so read on with caution.Carol Will Be Part Of The Fight(Photo by Marvel Studios)While all the previous Avengers: Endgame trailers have kept her presence something of a secret, Captain Marvel’s mid-credits stinger scene confirmed what just about everyone assumed would be the case – Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) will be part of the fight against Thanos (Josh Brolin). While Carol was not part of the team dedicated to stopping Thanos in the comic book story The Infinity Gauntlet, her predecessor Mar-Vell took on Thanos a number of times prior to the Gauntlet storyline. The release pattern of the two films certainly pointed to Carol’s presence in Endgame, but seeing her arrive at the Avengers base makes the team’s situation seem less dire. As seen in Captain Marvel, Carol is a powerhouse and potentially strong enough to physically restrain Thanos. And even when it comes to the Gauntlet, battered as it is at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, she may have an advantage.Carol Is Powered By The Space StoneBecause the psyche-magnetron – source of Carol s powers in the comics – was just a little too crazy for film, Carol’s powers derive from that old Phase I MacGuffin, the Tesseract. As we learn in Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell (Annette Bening) acquired the Tesseract in the 1980s and began using it to build a “light speed engine” capable of relocating the Skrull population far from the designs of the Kree Empire. Her experiment never really worked out, though, as the Kree attacked her experimental craft. Once it crashed, Carol blew up the engine, saturating her body with the energy of the Space Stone. As Ronan (Lee Pace) remarks late in the film, she’s the real weapon. And we think that might give her an advantage over Thanos if he tries to use the Gauntlet against the Avengers in Endgame. It is possible she may even be able to pry the Space Stone away from his control and make his absolute power a little less absolute. It may just be the thing the rest of the group needs to gain control of the Gauntlet and undo the Snap.At least, that’s one guess. Tying her to the Tesseract and even the Avengers Initiative makes sense on a thematic level, but it also suggests a ways for the Avengers to succeed in Endgame.Carol Hasn’t Aged(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)In the stinger scene, we couldn’t help but notice that Carol hasn’t aged. We’re going to assume that has something to do with the Space Stone energy. And while that may not really be a point to address in Endgame, it suggests subsequent Captain Marvel movies may keep their options in regards to story wide open.According to reports of Endgame footage screened for Disney shareholders on Thursday, Carol tells the Avengers she never returned to Earth because species other than the Skrulls needed her help. Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) page in the Infinity War credit sequence was the first indication Earth needed any sort of help. It suggests no one she knows out in the universe turned to dust, but she had to have noticed people vanishing en masse throughout her area of influence, right? That could suggest the Infinity Stones are not as powerful as legend tells, but we expect the more important aspect of Carol staying away from Earth is to set up future Captain Marvel movies set between the first film and Endgame. Alternatively, her lack of aging opens the door to a Captain Marvel 2 set after Endgame. After all, she has to explain herself to Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) and Monica Rambeau (Akira Akbar) at some point, right? They cannot be pleased that her estimated return time of “before you know it” is 20-odd years later. And now we have to wonder if either of them survived the Snap.No Skrull Secret Invasion … Not Yet Anyway(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)In one of the more pleasant and interesting turns within Captain Marvel, the shapeshifting Skrulls were not Carol’s ultimate enemy. Instead, we learn they are refugees from a Kree war of aggression. Their ultimate aim: escaping from the Empire’s grasp. In our extensive look at the Skrulls, we noticed they only became aggressive after encountering the Kree, entering into a war that spanned millennia. We were inclined to believe that would be the case in Captain Marvel as well and that it might lead to a Skrull invasion of Earth following Endgame. But with the Skrulls only taking to battle to defend themselves and their nominal leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) becoming Carol’s ally halfway through the film, that Skrull secret invasion seems much less likely than it did a week ago.Of course, we also took note of Mendelsohn s Talos as he proclaimed “this is only the beginning” when he was reunited with his fellow Skrulls aboard Mar-Vell’s ship. That may just be an artifact of the actor playing so many bad guys of late, but it could indicate a heel-turn from the character or the alien race as a whole in a subsequent MCU phase. For the moment, we’re happy to see that aspect of Captain Marvel’s script defy expectations and introduce the Skrulls in a new, sympathetic way.The Infinity WatchAnd while we’re pondering MCU Phases past Endgame, there is always the possibility Carol’s tie to the Space Stone will lead to her taking on a new role: its protector. After the events of the comics The Infinity Gauntlet, six people were chosen to take care of the Infinity Gems (as they were called at the time) in lieu of anyone obtaining the full powers of the Gauntlet again. The group included Gamora, Drax, Pip the Troll, Moondragon – two characters not yet seen in the MCU – and, shockingly, Thanos!(Photo by @ Marvel Studios)As in the comics, the Infinity Stones of the MCU cannot be destroyed, so everyone is better off knowing where they are rather than scattering them again only for someone (like, say, a Kree commander) to collect them and reassemble the Gauntlet.Should such a plan become an aspect of the post-Endgame MCU, Carol is the obvious choice to guard the Space Stone. She’s already tied to it. The plan would also presumably see Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) reclaiming the Time Stone and the Mind Stone recreating Vision (Paul Bettany). Considering the end of The Infinity Gauntlet, the Soul Stone could be entrusted to Thanos or it could returned to the Red Skull (Ross Marquand) – interesting that the Soul Stone would be safest in the possession of a villain – with the Reality Stone choosing to stay with the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Though her power originally came from the Mind Stone, she has been color- (Photo by Netflix)Fall 2019 TV Survey: Favorite Netflix ShowsFor Rotten Tomatoes’ annual Fall TV Survey, we asked thousands of our users what they’re most looking forward to in the coming TV season and to reflect on the best shows from seasons past.Stranger Things again dominated the top spot across all demographic age groups and both sexes when we asked Rotten Tomatoes fans, “Which Netflix original series is your favorite?”What we didn t expect to see was a Mindhunter leaping from No. 13 in 2018 to No. 3 in 2019 or the major motion among the canceled Marvel titles: The Punisher moved from 21 to No. 6 over the course of the year, The Defenders moved from No. 25 to No. 13, and Luke Cage moved from No. 24 to No. 10 — we re noting a pattern. Even Iron Fist showed up for this party, landing at No. 23.The vote disparity between males and females for the list was, again, worth noting. Marvel s Daredevil took second place overall again, but didn t appear in the top five for women, receiving only 14% vote from women overall. Mindhunter, meanwhile, was No. 2 among women, followed by The Crown, Orange Is the New Black, and Black Mirror. Newcomer Lucifer, meanwhile was No. 6 among women, but 16th overall. We allowed survey participants to vote for multiple titles — read on to find out which came out on top overall.
Like most anthology series, the eight episodes that make up Amazon’s Modern Love – based on the popular New York Times column of the same name – are hit and miss. Some, like — surprisingly — the one that stars Tina Fey and John Slattery as longtime marrieds who are try to get their groove back by playing tennis, are just meh.But then there’s “Take Me as I Am, Whoever I Am,” a moving installment in which Anne Hathaway’s Lexi is a whirlwind of energy and charm as she and Jeff (The Deuce scene-stealer Gary Carr) meet-cute at the supermarket. Her excitement about the prospects of this new romance can’t be contained – hence, the song-and-dance number that ensues in the store’s parking lot.(Photo by Christopher Saunders/Amazon Studios)But when Jeff arrives at her apartment to pick her up for their date, the much more subdued Lexi seems like a completely different person. We learn she has bipolar disorder, and her brief relationship with Jeff may be a crushing disappointment as a romance, but it sparks Lexi to seek medical help and open up to a friend about the all-consuming challenges she’s kept hidden.“It felt beautifully honest and surrealist at the same time,” Hathaway told Rotten Tomatoes about the story. “Something we’ve experienced in doing press for (the series) is that almost everybody that’s come in has said, ‘I know and love someone who has bipolar disorder,’ or, ‘I know and love someone who has a mental health condition that makes them feel different and alienated.’“And we’re no different, she said of the stories in the series. I was just really happy to make an episode for the people in my life who are going through that, to be able to say, ‘I love you, I see you, you’re gorgeous, you’re absolutely worth loving.’”(Photo by Christopher Saunders/Amazon Studios)Another gem in the line-up, “When the Doorman Is Your Main Man,” is about the friendship that develops between Cristin Milioti’s Maggie and Laurentiu Possa’s Guzmin, the titular doorman who seems a little too concerned about Maggie’s love life.Like the best of the Modern Love columns and TV episodes, this story highlights how it’s the connections people forge with each other, romantic and otherwise, that prevent them from being swallowed up and isolated in a fast-paced world or a big city like New York. Guzmin and Maggie have something more important than a fling: a friendship that continues through Maggie’s pregnancy, her life as a single mother, and other major life changes.“I think they’re … like two kindred spirits,” Milioti said about the episode, which also spotlights the not-at-all uncommon bonds that form between longtime residents and the doormen (and women) who become a part of their daily lives.(Photo by Christopher Saunders/Amazon Studios)Another of the series’ best episodes stars an alum of another Amazon series: Andrew Scott (yes, Fleabag’s Hot Priest) in “Hers Was a World of One” (based on Modern Love: Three Mothers, One Bond ). Scott’s Tobin and Brandon Kyle Goodman’s Andy are a gay couple who enter an open adoption with homeless-by-choice free spirit Karla (Olivia Cooke).Karla upends their well-ordered life well before the baby arrives, and Tobin, in particular, becomes more open-minded and tolerant as he very reluctantly at first experiences with Karla’s bohemian lifestyle.“We’re very interested in identity politics, and we’re very interested in what we are, where we come from, where we’re going, and I think what’s very important to remember is we can co-exist with people and love people and like them and have them in our lives that have completely different political aspirations and points of view,” Scott said. “And our job is not to annihilate people who disagree with us, but to try to co-exist with everyone … and that’s really what this story says.”“And that families can look different,” Goodman added. “It doesn’t have to be a mom and dad … there can be three parents together. It’s about love, and the child having their love, whoever the parents are.”(Photo by Christopher Saunders/Amazon Studios)Other stars of Modern Love episodes include Catherine Keener, Dev Patel, Andy Garcia, Julia Garner, Shea Whigham, Jane Alexander, Judd Hirsch, Peter Hermann,Sofia Boutella, and John Gallagher Jr. with guest spots by a certain red-headed British pop star and a Chopped star. Whether or not you enjoy their New York–set stories depends largely on how much you like the cast, and whether or not you’re a fan of the personal essay-ness of the NYT column. Not every story is as compelling, or just plain entertaining on a rom-com level, but Hathaway and Carr s performances do create one of the most satisfying episodes of TV of the year.Modern Love is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
