(Photo by Showtime)Video game adaptations are tough. For years, feature film takes on beloved games like Super Mario Bros. and FarCry have been the butt of jokes thanks to producers who take the title and little else from the source material. Even more recent, high-gloss, and faithful efforts seem to lose something in the translation. (See our guide to 47 Video Game Movies Ranked Worst to Best. )But Paramount+ hopes to buck that tragic big-budget trend with a high-end series based on Microsoft’s epic game franchise Halo. As Showtime Networks co-president Gary Levine put it at the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour, “Our challenge on this series was to take a video game and make it into a character drama that belongs on Showtime.” Two years later, Showtime’s corporate parent, ViacomCBS, announced the series would instead be one that belongs on its rebranded Paramount+ streaming service.Navigating the landscape from game mechanics to filmed entertainment is often as difficult as any mission series main character Master Chief confronts, but here are the details we know so far about the Paramount+ Halo series.[Updated on 2/24/21]1. It Is Based Upon a Huge Game Universe(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Beginning with 2001’s Halo: Combat Evolved, the Halo series charts the ongoing conflict between a spacefaring humanity in the 26th century and an alien theocracy known as the Covenant. In that first game, Master Chief John-117, a genetically enhanced Spartan supersoldier encased in advanced armor, faces off against the Covenant for control of a Halo — a ring-shaped space station/super weapon created by an ancient and extinct race the Covenant worship as gods. The game changed the perception of first-person shooters on home consoles and gave Microsoft its first huge win in that market when the game was released as a launch title for the original XBox.Sequels followed — five so far in the main series with a sixth, Halo Infinite, due out in 2021 (we hope) — and a surprising number of spin-offs. New characters appeared to play off against the stoic Master Chief and the spin-offs further developed the Halo universe by featuring more story-driven first-person shooters or switching to other game mechanics like Real Time Strategy. Books, comics, and animated series further deepened the breadth of the franchise s universe and history. The television series will attempt to “weave deeply drawn personal stories with action and adventure set within that richly imagined vision of the future.” Anchoring those stories will be Master Chief, played by American Gods’ Pablo Schreiber (pictured). In a 2019 interview, Levine told Rotten Tomatoes and a small group of reporters that Schreiber has “the physicality to be a Spartan, to be Master Chief. But he is [also] a great dramatic actor.” A mention of Schreiber’s comedic chops and the “twinkle in his eye” suggests Master Chief may be seen without his helmet or armor; a first for Halo should it happen. Although Levine added, “we’re not violating anything big,” so Master Chief may remain within his armor throughout the series.2. Steven Spielberg Is Involved (Sort Of)(Photo by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Since 2013, Spielberg’s Amblin Television has been involved in developing the current iteration of the Halo TV project. At that time, he was said to be on board as an executive producer, but it seems he will not take on any direct creative duties. Nonetheless, there is always the potential he will take an interest in the series, particularly as it focuses on two of his favorite topics: war and aliens.Microsoft’s 343 Industries — an entity it established to manage the Halo brand following the departure of original developer Bungie — will also produce the series, suggesting a level of direct developer control seen only with Ubisoft producing 2016 s Assassin’s Creed. That film, however, proved developer input may not lead to a great adaptation as that film only garnered a 19% on the Tomatometer and an audience score of 43%.3. Its Cast Reflects Halo’s Past And Future(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Joining Master Chief on this television journey will be Yerin Ha as Quan Ah, a new character devised specifically for the series. First announced alongside Schreiber, the character is described as a “shrewd, audacious 16-year-old from the Outer Colonies who meets Master Chief at a fateful time for them both.” The series will also feature Californication’s Natascha McElhone (pictured), Fargo’s Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Bentley Kalu, Natasha Culzac, and Kate Kennedy.McElhone will play Dr. Catherine Halsey, inventor of the Spartan super-soldiers and Cortana, the advance AI who is the key to humanity’s survival and a constant element in Master Chief’s adventures. Cortana is also the name of Microsoft’s AI assistant on its platforms; the name was, in fact, derived from Halo. At one point, McElhone was set to voice Cortana, but scheduling issues led to the character s original voice, Jen Taylor, stepping in and creating one bit of continuity with the games.Woodbine will take on the role of Soren-066, another established Halo character. He is an old friend of Master Chief’s and a privateer in conflict with the military — which means he may come into direct conflict with Azmi’s character, Admiral Margaret Parangosky, the head of Naval Intelligence and another character from the games who seemingly places the Halo TV series in a specific part of the franchise’s history. But, as Levine said, “you re going to get new information in our series, but we are not going to violate any of the things in the canon.”Kalu, Culzac, and Kennedy all play new characters to the Halo universe with familiar affiliations. Kalu is Spartan Vannak-134, Master Chief’s de facto deputy. Culzac is Spartan Riz-028, a “cybernetically enhanced killing machine,” and Kennedy is Spartan Kai-125, another Spartan super-soldier tasked to the mission. Actors Yerin Ha, Charlie Murphy, Olive Gray, and Danny Sapani are also part of the series in unspecified roles.”4. It Has Great Talent in the Writers’ RoomExploring the “richly imagined universe” is executive producer and showrunner Kyle Killen, creator of critically acclaimed Lone Star (83% on the Tomatometer) and the fan-favorite NBC series Awake (89% Audience Score). Both series featured protagonist who faced dual realities — literally in the case of Awake’s Micheal Britten (Jason Isaacs). Both shows also faced tough competition on broadcast television and did not last beyond their initial episode orders; nonetheless, a 10-episode cable series may turn out to be the best format for Killen as a writer and producer. And should Halo s protagonist find themselves caught between two worlds — say humanity versus the culture of The Covenant — Killen will be a great fit for the material. The Last Ship’s Steven Kane also serves as showrunner alongside Killen. His TNT series has an 83% on the Tomatometer and proved to be success on that network over the course of five seasons. Kane reportedly oversees production in Budapest while Killen supervises writing and other stateside production efforts. Also, the initial episodes will be directed by Robin Hood’s Otto Bathurst, who replaced Rupert Wyatt due to scheduling conflicts.“[He] is a marvelous director,” Levine said of Bathurst. “Unbelievably passionate about the project, and he has been leading our team beautifully.”5. This Is Not the First Attempt Adapt Halo(Photo by Vanguard Cinema)Halo nearly became a feature film in the early part of the 21st century. In 2005, 20th Century Fox and Universal picked up the project thanks in part to a script written by Annhilation’s Alex Garland. According to Garland, the story was a fairly faithful adaptation of the two Halo games available at the time. Peter Jackson was poised to produce with both Guillermo del Toro and Neill Blomkamp eyeing the director’s chair. Sadly, tough negotiations between the studios, Jackson, and producer Peter Schlessel led to the project’s collapse. After to the project’s implosion, Blomkamp said he would have used Master Chief as “the most important supporting cast member” with other characters doing “most of the emotional heavy lifting.”Since the time of the failed feature attempt, Microsoft produced two live-action webseries which were later released as films: Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn and Halo: Nightfall. The latter was produced by Ridley Scott’s production company Scott Free and featured Luke Cage’s Mike Colter as Agent Jameson Locke, a playable character in Halo 5: Guardians.6. The Switch to Paramount+Although intended to be a Showtime original series, David Nevins, CBS Chief Creative Officer and Showtime Networks Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, surprised reporters during a February 2021 Investor Day presentation by adding the program to the Paramount+ roster. The streaming service, a rebrand of the existing CBS All Access, intends to encompass more of ViacomCBS’s programming. According to Nevins, Halo fits right in with the sort of content the streaming service intends to highlight. “From all the early glimpses we’ve seen, it’s crystal clear that Halo is a visually stunning thrill-ride, anchored in riveting, character-driven storytelling,” he said. “With such tremendous appeal to every audience, we realized Halo had the potential to become a defining show for what will become the broadest streaming platform at ViacomCBS – the new Paramount+.” Showtime will still be involved as a producer alongside 343 Industries and Amblin.7. What s the Status? Production began in Budapest during the fall of 2019, but the COVID-19 pandemic led to a long delay. It is currently in production again with Paramount+ setting it for an early 2022 debut. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News. Zack Snyder s Justice League: Gallery'> New-Look Steppenwolf The costume department generated all of the concept art for the digital characters full turnarounds, drawn in 3D drawing applications. I knew I wanted to create textures and silhouettes that were unlike anything that audiences had seen before, since the culture that Darkseid, Desaad, and Steppenwolf come from is so advanced and so alien to us. I researched new innovative design languages, and realized that I needed to explore new ways of drawing and expressing my ideas. I was fortunate enough to work with the amazing concert artist Jerad Marantz, who poured so much talent and technical innovation into the drawings of these characters. Honoring the Design Legacy of Darkseid To me it’s always important to start with the legacy version of the costume, as drawn by the great illustrators over the decades. I look at what is iconic and defining about the illustration, and then I use this insight as a leaping point from which to explore my own ideas. Creating the Amazon Look I’m so glad that audiences are seeing more of the Amazon world, because my team and I put so much heart and soul into creating the look of this world. Not only did I give a lot of thought to their culture and history, creating a graphic language of shapes, motifs, textures, and finishes that reflect this, but also I wanted to create details that show the differences in the warriors personalities. We experimented with new materials, sculpted and molded many new costume elements, used fur-like fabrics, customized jewelry and worked with a talented crew of art finishers that created a stunning range of colors and painted effects – that way each character’s costume was unique. With Flash’s design we wanted to hint at various nano-technologies and aerodynamic shapes that Barry would have explored to create a suit that moves through space and time in the most comfortable, efficient way. Whenever I interpret a 2D legacy drawing of a character and make it into a 3D costume that a film camera has to adore, I aim to enrich the textures and silhouettes, and I think about every square centimeter of the costume, from the soles of the feet to under the arms! A Post-Apocalyptic Knightmare This scene was exciting because it’s totally new for the DC canon I don’t want to create spoilers for the fans who haven’t seen this sequence, but essentially we created a post-apocalyptic look for all of the characters, aging and embellishing versions of each character’s costume – adding textures and various layering pieces to achieve a vibe that worked for this dystopian vision. The Black Superman Suit For Justice League I found a new fabric for the mesh oversuit of the regular Superman suit that made the undersuit really gleam in a beautiful way. I was excited about the idea of the black Superman suit because I knew it would look incredible if we really pushed some elements that we had already created with the regular suit – we made the undersuit even more metallic than previously, and it gleamed dramatically through the mesh. The dimensional chain-mail print on the mesh was done using silvery graphite metallic paints. All of these tweaks ensured that a monochromatic Supersuit was anything but boring! Cyborg Gets Practical Ray and I always joked that the VFX motion-capture rig that we created for him to wear for the shoot was anything but heroic – it’s a testimony to his sense of poise that he managed to carry it off with a certain dignity! It wasn’t particularly uncomfortable, just not quite as impressive or intimidating as his fellow team members [outfits]. A Glimpse of the Atlanteans Since the ancient Atlanteans are on screen for such a short time I had to make sure that the audience has strong visual links to the two time periods – but there are definite differences, since this culture changes with time and the different situations that they find themselves in. For example, we see them in ancient times before they inhabit the waters, so this needed to be reflected in their costumes. Witty Civilian Looks I like to keep my design choices quite free and witty when it comes to the civilian looks – links between the colors and textures of the superhero suits can be interesting, but often contrast is also effective. For example, the hiding-from-the-world quality of Barry Allen’s clothes versus the extreme hi-tech quality of his supersuit. Above all, I wanted to show through their costumes that they all came from very different backgrounds and had different strengths.

Updating their long-term release schedule on Tuesday, The Walt Disney Company revealed one key detail about the future of Star Wars: a trio of films will arrive across the decade. The release dates slot untitled Star Wars films for the Christmases of 2022, 2024 and 2026. And unlike their ambitious plan to release a new Star Wars film every year in the wake of Star Wars: The Force Awakens success, a bi-annual cycle appears to be the amount of Star Wars moviegoers will accept. But at the same time, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker claims to be the end of the Skywalker Saga began in 1977’s Star Wars. If that is the case, what will the 2020 story cycle be and who are the creative participants behind it? We have some guesses gleaned together from various announcements. We also have one or two ideas we have to call “wishful thinking.” But let’s take a look at the places Star Wars could go in the 2020s.Rian Johnson Makes His Trilogy(Photo by David James/ © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures/Lucasfilm Ltd. /Courtesy Everett Collection)Shortly after the departure of The Rise of Skywalker’s original director, Colin Trevorrow, many speculated Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson could pick up the slack and make Episode IX. He quickly dispelled this notion, stating he had no interest in making that film. Looking back on it now, we bet this was because he was thinking about the trilogy of films he and Lucasfilm were already discussing.  In November 2017, the plan was formally announced. Johnson would write and direct the first film and then hand off the heavy-lifting to a new group. The initial press release also stated the trilogy will “introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.” That could mean anything from a story about droid manufacturing to a nature documentary about Porgs.Very few details about his plans have emerged in the time since. The only significant rumor to surface centered on whether or not it is still happening at all. In February, Johnson took to Twitter ( I m still working on the trilogy ) to dispel the rumor, dashing the hopes of Last Jedi haters everywhere.Nonetheless, the lack of any other updates indicates the trilogy may be further off in the distance than anyone wants to admit. Johnson is still hard at work on Knives Out, his Daniel Craig-starring Last Jedi follow-up set for a November 27th release. Presumably he will return to the galaxy far, far away after that.David Benioff and D.B. Weiss Launch Their Own Fleet(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)First announced in February of last year, a series of Star Wars films from Game of Thrones executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss is on the way. It is unclear if they will claim the 2020s release dates, but after completing Thrones, Star Wars is their next job. The series will be separate from both the Skywalker Saga and the Johnson Trilogy. In fact Lucasfilm avoids the word “trilogy” when discussing their plans, indicating Benioff and Weiss will supervise more than three films.Rumors also indicate their story will take viewers back to an ancient time in the Old Republic before the Sith clouded the judgment of the Jedi and the government was stable. Sure, it sounds tranquil and dull, but even the most peaceful eras of the Republic still featured wars, unrest with certain planets, and ambitious Darths hoping to seize control of everything. Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) was not the first Sith Lord to scheme on that scale – just the most successful. And while it might seem a more primitive version of the Star Wars galaxy would be a good fit for the Game of Thrones boys, it should be noted the universe of Star Wars is oddly stagnant in terms of technology and fashions. Maybe “DnD” as some GoT fans call them will shake up that perception and redefine the look and feel of the Old Republic era.The rumors also suggest the first film in their series will be ready to shoot soon, making this the most likely the project to claim the 2022 release date.A Mixture of Those TwoConsidering Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy’s comments about “the next ten years of Star Wars,” it is possible the Johnson and DnD plans will run concurrently with the first Benioff/Weiss film claiming the 2022 slot, and Johnson s debuting in 2024. The two story cycles would then leap-frog the bi-annual release dates until 2032 when Johnson’s trilogy would presumably end. Such a schedule would prevent the audience fatigue which plagued Solo: A Star Wars Story from seeping in, but will viewers want to wait four years between chapters?Continuing the Story in Episode X and Beyond(Photo by Bantam Books)Yes, we’ve been told repeatedly that The Rise of Skywalker will be the end of the saga pictures. But we were also told Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith was the final production, making Return of the Jedi the final episode of the story. The precise placement of “the end” has been a topic of debate since creator George Lucas first began discussing his plans for the series in the late 1970s. The 9-episode cycle was the most talked about version of the idea – at least until Lucas started making the Prequels and said the Saga would only be 6 episodes – but some of the earliest interviews indicated a 12-episode plan. That bare shred of an idea could justify a continuation of the mainline series. And, to be honest, it’s not hard to imagine another trilogy set 30 some years after The Rise of Skywalker. It is a time with no Jedi and no Sith. An age of smaller republics (and empires) coexisting in an uneasy detente while Force-sensitive people continue to help where they can. Some may form tight-knit, Jedi-like cells while others operate independently. But with the old hierarchies gone, people throughout the galaxy try to live their lives without the worry of another pan-galactic war. Throw into this scenario a new menace and you have something familiar and new because all of the old terminology and symbols are gone. While we’re at it, make the new menace something not in tune with the Force at all. Sure, we’re reaching back to the role Admiral Thrawn had in Timothy Zahn’s 1990s novel cycle, but there’s a reason that character remains an enduring figure. While unlikely, Disney and Lucasfilm can always find a way to do this. And if not in the 2020s, then in the fullness of time.Adapting Knights of the Old Republic(Photo by LucasArts)File this one under wishful thinking, but we would love to see a proper film adaptation of Bioware’s Knights of the Old Republic video game series. With strong characters like Darth Revan, Bastila Shan, Canderous Ordo, and G0-T0 – to say nothing of the beloved assassin droid HK-47 – there’s plenty to work with. And, as it happens, a KOTOR film trilogy could do something the video games never did: end. A potential KOTOR III teased the return of Revan as he faced off against “The True Sith.” But as Bioware became more invested in its home-grown series Mass Effect and Dragon Age, Revan’s fate became material for the company’s Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO, a different style of game which could never replace a real KOTOR III.And as all of the Star Wars video games sit outside of official Lucasfilm continuity, the characters and situations could be molded to fit the needs of the right filmmakers.Considering Benioff and Weiss’s familiarity with adapting established material, this could be the backbone of their planned film series. But then considering how the concluding chapters of Game of Thrones are being received, maybe its best they avoid this story for another tale of the Old Republic.Keeping The Anthology Series Alive(Photo by 2002 Lucasfilm Ltd., courtesy Everett Collection)Plans for A Star Wars Story films based around Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi seemingly evaporated after Solo underperformed. But Lucasfilm never throws an idea away and it is always possible for the Star Wars anthology format to return in some form. Even before the concept had a name and the company joined the Disney stable, there were plans to develop a feature film centered on Yoda and whatever incident left Palpatine and Darth Maul looking for revenge in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. These sorts of side stories are clearly of on-going interest to Lucasfilm. If paced properly – say every two years – films centering on established characters or briefly mentioned incidents in mainline Star Wars films could find an audience. And who wouldn’t want to see Ewan McGregor back in his Jedi robes and having a solo adventure sometime before he rescues Luke (Mark Hamill) from Tusken Raiders? At the same time, the response of Solo is also a key indication the fans want these stories to remain in the purview of comics, novels and animated series. It is a fair compromise, indicating the return of A Star Wars Story is the least likely way Disney will use its Star Wars release dates through the next decade.

Ghcxuf “There is a great responsibility at hand,” warns series newcomer Spock (Ethan Peck) in a trailer for the second season of CBS All Access  Star Trek: Discovery.Season 2 of the sci-fi/adventure series begins with a major crisis: the inexplicable appearance of seven red signal bursts across 30,000 light years of space. These signals, it’s said, typically follow the arrival of a being that Starfleet has coined the “Red Angel.”“This could be the defining moment for multiple civilizations, millions of lives. The future may be determined by our actions — yours and mine,” Spock says, claiming that this angel has shown him an apocalyptic vision of what’s to come should nothing be done. “Someone, or something, is going to end all sentient life in the galaxy,” he says in the clip.Rotten Tomatoes spoke with members of the expansive ensemble — from star Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham) to newcomer Anson Mount (Capt. Christopher Pike) — along with producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin to learn more of what’s to come this season. Below are 13 must-know secrets they revealed ahead of the premiere.1. The Federation is rebuilding after the war(Photo by Michael Gibson/CBS)If one thing is certain in the Star Trek multiverse, it’s that there are surprises around every corner. So while Martin-Green wasn t able to reveal many specific plotlines prior to the show s season 2 premiere, she did tease two major tidbits: First, the season will pick up in the midst of rebuilding after the Federation’s war with the Klingons. And second, it’s going to make audiences cry.“Season 2 is very much an exploration of science and faith. We ve heard that said quite a bit, but it is also a deeply emotional story because we have a lot to deal with after that war, she said. That war left a lot in its wake, and we have to look at it. It s like the tornado runs through the home and then you re just bearing down and you re gritting your teeth, and when the tornado leaves, now you ve got to turn to your house and be like, OK, so now we don t have a roof. OK, now there s flooding everywhere. OK, how are we going to clean this all up? Do we want to still live here?  Those are the questions that we have to ask ourselves, that we do ask ourselves, and I love that. We re willing and ready to do the work and to show how much work it actually is to rebuild.”2. Burnham’s been forgiven, but her actions aren’t forgotten(Photo by Jan Thijs/CBS)Star Trek: Discovery’s first season was very much a story of redemption for Michael, who set in motion the events that ultimately led to the central war. And while the season’s end saw her reinstated as a commander in Starfleet, Martin-Green said those earlier misfires still affect the woman we see on screen today.“Unfortunately, it never goes away, right? You make a deep mistake like that, that has those kinds of consequences, it never goes away,” she said. “You learn how to deal with it better and better as each day goes on, but it doesn t just go away, and it is something Burnham will have to contend with for the rest of her life. There will always be those reminders of that. There will always be reminders of the great loss of the Klingon War and how many people fell from that. And it s a big part of the maturation that happens with Burnham over the course of season 1: the cost of arrogance, and the cost of thinking that because you were trained in logic, you re right, and because you were trained in logic, you know what s best for everyone. That’s not the case, she continued. If you have to make a decision for everyone, everyone s perspective is needed. That was a big lesson to learn. And so that changed Burnham s identity, and that s a permanent change…. I say to Sarek in the pilot of the show that my emotion informs my logic, but my logic needs to inform my emotions as well. I have to find a way to accept my humanity fully, but also accept my logical way of thinking fully, and have them work together seamlessly. I think that s going to take some more time.”3. Burnham and Ash Tyler have unfinished business(Photo by CBS)Actor Shazad Latif confirmed to Rotten Tomatoes that even though his Ash Tyler (formerly Voq) left Starfleet with L’Rell (Mary Chieffo) after the war, he will be returning to Discovery.“He does go back onto the ship because [he’s] sort of acting as this mediator, so he’ ll see them again,” he said.Plus, he and Burnham may have some unfinished business in their affair.“That is yet another thing that has to be dealt with because, yes, Ash is the first man that Burnham has ever been in love with,” Martin-Green said. “There wasn t any time for that on Vulcan, and there certainly wasn t any time for that once I joined Starfleet. It was just career, career, career, career. So yes, [his leaving] was a deep emotional betrayal, and that doesn t just go away. Him deciding to serve L Rell because he s searching for who he is and where he belongs, that s a decision that I respect very much as Burnham, but that doesn t mean that the betrayal goes away. So I will say that no stone is left unturned.”4. The truth about Burnham and Spock will be revealedSome viewers have found it odd that the Spock they know from the original series (which is set 10 years ahead of Discovery) never mentioned his half-sister Burnham, but showrunner Kurtzman promised that that mystery and more will be resolved in season 2.“Obviously there was a lot of questions from the last season, right? How come Spock has never mentioned his half-sister Michael Burnham? And we owe the audience an answer to that,” Kurtzman said. “It is through his relationship, his very complicated and broken relationship with Michael, that he s able to actualize himself as the Spock we know from TOS, and that s a big part of what this season s about.”Peck, the actor behind this younger, bearded iteration of Spock, also expanded on that a bit, saying, “They haven t seen each other in a long time — and there s a reason for that. 5. This is an “untold chapter” of Spock s life(Photo by James Dimmock/CBS)Click to see full poster.“One of the things that I m most excited about with this season is that this is the untold chapter of Spock,” Kurtzman said. “This is Spock pre-TOS; he s not actualized as the character you know from the original series yet.”Touching on the mysterious red bursts and the appearance of what’s been called the “red angel,” Kurtzman added that coming face to face with the unknown will challenge Spock in unexpected ways.“He has seen something that his logical brain and logical training can not make sense of, and he s emotionally ill-equipped to deal with it. So logic and emotion have failed Spock. He is trying to figure out who he is and what the signals mean and the red angel means, Kurtzman said.6. Ethan Peck embodies Spock(Photo by James Dimmock/CBS)Especially with franchises as beloved as Star Trek, there’s going to be heightened scrutiny around the casting of characters new and old. Spock for Discovery season 2 proved no different. Fortunately, after auditioning more than 400 actors, Kurtzman and executive producer Heather Kadin knew they’d found their man when Peck walked in the room.“I think it s because of the time of Spock s life we re going to be looking into and diving into, you wanted someone who exhibited those qualities that you ve seen in the later versions of Spock, but also he s younger,” Kadin said. “It s like casting a younger version of yourself. It s hard because you want that person to look like they could grow into the person you know. So that s hard to find.”Despite the stereotypes surrounding Vulcans, the role needed an actor who could exhibit wide ranges of emotion.“There s a misconception that Vulcans don t have emotion, [but] that s not the case at all. They contain it very differently than humans do, Kurtzman said. So what you re looking for from an actor is somebody who can convey enormous amount of emotion behind that stoic Vulcan veneer. And when Ethan came in, then read, it was really clear that he was feeling so much and working so hard to contain it. Especially with the Spock that you re going to see in this season who doesn t know what to do with his emotion and doesn t understand how logic and emotion fit together yet. He just seemed like the guy. It was very natural. 7. Peck is Nimoy family–approved(Photo by Paramount Pictures)While discussing his character analysis and process in finding how he was going to bring Spock to life on Discovery, Peck recounted how he watched hours of the original series in addition to taking notes from Zachary Quinto’s performance from the latest trilogy of feature films. But one thing that really crystallized his Spock was paying a visit to the famed Leonard Nimoy’s family.“I met with the Nimoy family, which was incredible. They were so warm and curious. It was like the first step of making me feel worthy of this because they were just so lovely,” Peck recalled. “I watched the documentaries they each made. [Nimoy s son] Adam made For the Love of Spock, and [Nimoy s daughter] Julie  made Remembering Leonard Nimoy. They inspired me to be curious, and that was the best advice I could have gotten because Spock is ultimately a curious being. He wants to understand. He s special in the way that he has a big heart, ultimately, in order to take in the universe, as well as a great mind.”8. Section 31 is a looming presence(Photo by James Dimmock/CBS)Section 31 has been a controversial addition to the Star Trek universe since its introduction, but here, the top-secret intelligence division provides a perfect and tantalizing vehicle for the return of Emperor Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) from the Mirror Universe.“Starfleet lives in a very black and white world. They have rules; they have to stick to those rules. You can bend them, but you can t break them,” Kurtzman explained. “Section 31 lives entirely in shades of gray, and they do all of the things that Starfleet proper can t do. That s really interesting because when you have a character like Georgiou, whose conscience is constantly being tested and her ethics are constantly being tested, she s really in some ways the perfect person to do the dirty work that Starfleet can t do, and that s an exciting place to explore. It s a little bit gloves off, which is what s fun about Section 31.”9. Discovery will embrace exploration(Photo by Ben Mark Holzberg/CBS)Despite the likely more menacing nature of the seven red bursts this season, some positives come the development, according toAnthony Rapp, who plays Paul Stamets, and Mount. First of all, the bursts’ appearance is likely what brought Pike to Discovery in the first place thanks to the ship s space-travel capabilities.“The reason [Pike] needs that fast ship is that they ve been charting these seven signals around the galaxy. The energy required to produce them is beyond anything humanity has ever encountered,” Mount said. “We don t even know where to begin with what this could be. This could be a completely other level of existence that we ve never encountered before. He is as consumed by this question as anything he s ever been consumed by.”And second, while season 1 was largely encumbered by the war with the Klingons, season 2’s developments reinvigorate the series with Star Trek’s trademark sense of curiosity and exploration.“The fundamental core attitude of Starfleet is curiosity, and [Pike] is fully in the throes of that when we encounter him in the first episode of this season, Mount said.“The seven signals are requiring us literally to go around the galaxy and figure out what the hell s going on,” Rapp added. “That means that sometimes you have to visit places that we haven t visited before. So, yes, it was by design that writers are like, ‘Yes, we want to make sure we re doing more of that exploration stuff.’ There s still going to be this spine of the long form story, but it will also have a little more like, ‘This episode we re going to be on this asteroid,’ and, ‘This episode we re going be on this planet.’ That s been really satisfying.”One new territory explored? Saru’s home planet, Kaminar.10. Love may be in the cards for Saru(Photo by Ben Mark Holzberg/CBS)The end of season 1 saw Saru (Jones), a Kelpien — an alien race generally regarded as cowardly — earn commendations for his bravery in helping to end the Klingon war, and the second season could see even more growth for the character in the form of a potential love interest.“We have to procreate somehow,” Jones deadpanned when Rotten Tomatoes asked whether that was in the cards for the character. “I had a private conversation last night over dinner with our showrunner Alex Kurtzman about that very thing. About the possibility. So I don t know what s ahead for Saru. Personally, I would like him to find love because every character I play I want to find love and a sense of belonging in some way, shape, or form. After the events of the first season,  a whole new world has opened up to him,” Jones added, “so love should open up too, shouldn t it? I like that idea.”11. Ash and L’Rell’s relationship is more tenuous than everOutside of Starfleet, L’Rell (Chieffo) will explore her newfound political power among the Klingons and her developing relationship with Ash, who is undergoing a crisis of identity like no other. It doesn’t help that L’Rell feels guilt and remorse for her plan with Voq going haywire.“We’re in therapy now,” she joked. “It is a constant reminder that I failed [Voq]. I came up with the plan, he decided to sacrifice himself, and I was like: ‘I promise you, I ll make it work,’ and then I failed because I underestimated the integrity of the human spirit, which I think is a beautiful and interesting metaphor that she had to acknowledge.”Now that the two of them are back together and Ash does indeed remember his Klingon life as Voq, season 2 has plenty to play with between the two.“I didn t expect [Voq’s] memories to stay with him. I thought that I was getting rid of [Voq] when I did the surgery. That s the big shock in the finale…. So it s that navigation of, ‘How do I respect the choice that he made to be more human but still have that Klingon within him?’ It s very tense,” she revealed.12. Klingon leader L’Rell is modeled after female historical icons(Photo by Michael Gibson/CBS)Chieffo cited real-life historical icons including Queen Elizabeth and Cleopatra as inspiration for her character s journey this season, and said playing a powerful alien leader allowed her and the writers’ room to play with and expand upon how women in positions of power are portrayed onscreen.“So many of these stories have been told from a white, male perspective,” she said. “Now it s [2019], it s sci-fi, she s an alien — we can take what we love about those women and give her a little bit more of a fully fleshed-out story. If I could say more specifically, I would, but those archetypes have been very important to me. Someone said to me, ‘Being alien is to shift into a different octave,’ which I really like. There s something about that that I think we both embody.”13. Star Trek mythology has inspired its stars real-life activism(Photo by James Dimmock/CBS)Star Trek: Discovery didn’t allow just Chieffo to reframe her perceptions of social justice in the real world. Both Martin-Green and Wilson Cruz (who plays Dr. Hugh Culber) praised the foundational ideologies of the franchise for emboldening their views on today’s most important issues off-screen.“I have to say as much as I much appreciate this job and this opportunity, I appreciate it more and more as each day passes with this [current political climate], Cruz said. It does inspire me to believe that there is a better alternative than the one we have at the moment. Our job as artists is to help people imagine and to help inspire them and to imagine a better world, especially in Star Trek. That s what it always has done. It s always asked its audience to imagine what it would be like if we all actually not just acknowledged and tolerated our differences, but celebrated those differences.”In that sense, Martin-Green says, Star Trek: Discovery is her personal call to arms.“For me, personally I consider Star Trek to be a call to arms. It s a call to rise; it s a call to action. Because yes, it s one thing to see this picture, it s one thing to see this utopia, in a sense. It s another thing to see the work it takes to get there…. I want to step on the battlefield and bring up my weapon of love — love is really a weapon. It s the most powerful weapon we have and it never fails.”New episodes of Star Trek: Discovery are released every Thursday on CBS All Access. 😈😈

bob体育在线登入 The next few months are going to be dominated by big awards movies (think Bombshell, Little Women) and even bigger blockbusters (The Rise of Skywalker). But they re not the only films worthy of your attention, and money, on the horizon. There is some great indie fare, much of which debuted on the festival circuit this year, coming to theaters and streaming services soon. So mark these dates down – at least the ones we have; we re still waiting for release info on some of them – to get your quality indie fill.Guns Akimbo (2019) 51%Courtesy of TIFFAccording to critics, Jason Lei Howden’s latest action-packed adventure is just the right balance of good old-fashioned American excess and pointed social commentary about our fascination with guns, violence, and masculinity. Starring Daniel Radcliffe as Miles, a bumbling ne’er-do-well, Guns Akimbo is what Robert Daniels at rogerebert.com calls an  exciting and sometimes trite adventure into the world of tech, the internet, and our insatiable need for brutality on demand. When Miles is unwillingly recruited into a notorious and illegal underground death match called “Skizm,” he must figure out how to survive the day, save the girl, and become the hero. Nothing goes according to plan, of course, but the journey is what makes it fun.Pursued by Skizm champion Nix (played with campy fun by Samara Weaving in another killer role following her breakout performance earlier this summer in the Certified Fresh Ready or Not) and trying hard not to “shoot his dick off” with the guns literally bolted into his hands, Miles embarks on a darkly funny race through the city. According to Birth.Movies.Death., the movie overflows with a frenetic, intense energy that supports Radcliffe s progressively-more-unhinged performance.  Release date TBD.The Obituary of Tunde Johnson (2019) 89%Courtesy of TIFFAli LeRoi’s feature debut is a lyrical take on police brutality and the many vagaries of living as a black gay man in America. Working from a screenplay by USC film student Stanley Kalu, LeRoi blends terror and fiction in this time-loop drama: his protagonist wakes up dead every day, repeating old routines, meeting with his secret boyfriend, and coming out to his parents again and again before being murdered by police once more. The film’s slow build makes these rash of deaths feel immediate and terrifying. Each path to the end  is different from the last and tragic in its own way. As Tunde navigates his relationships anew each day, he is never quite conscious of the last, forced to make new decisions without any knowledge of his past and future. But as he’s constantly reminded that he has so much to live for, the arc of his fateful day begins to bend. Beandrea July for The Hollywood Reporter writes that The Obituary of Tunde Johnson is “an agonizing tale about the weight society hoists upon too many black gay men’s weary shoulders.”Release date TBD.The Platform (2019) 79%Courtesy of TIFFCritics are calling this debut from Spanish director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia a thrilling morality tale about the radical power of working toward the common good. The film’s focus is the terrifying prison of Urrutia’s near-future dystopia: The Pit. Vertically stacked cells set around holes in the ceiling and floor connect each level’s two captives to each of the others. Every day, a decadent feast is sent down to the prisoners through the tower’s delivery system, stopping at each floor for a brief time. Those at the top are kept well-fed, while those at the bottom starve. One citizen volunteers to serve a six-month sentence in exchange for professional credentials upon his release, but the horrors he experiences as he makes his way through the Pit’s “vertical self-management system” force him to think about what we owe each other, how we can support each other, and who precisely wins when we choose neglect instead of cooperation.Critics and audiences are saying that the Spanish thriller is disorienting, but incredibly arresting in its tight critique of our current political climate. Variety called it a “brutalist nightmare for the way Urrutia’s vivid and inventive cruelties flesh out the psychological madness of living in such casually cruel conditions. The prisoners demonstrate how social mores can break down when people are pushed to the outer edges of their own humanity. The Platform is coming to Netflix. Release date TBD. How to Build a Girl (2019) 79%Courtesy of TIFFStarring Booksmart and Lady Bird’s Beanie Feldstein and based on the novel of the same name by screenwriter and journalist Caitlin Moran, How To Build A Girl is what Rendy Reviews calls  another cementing case of the gleaming star power of Feldstein s talent. The film follows protagonist Johanna Morrigan (Feldstein) through the highs and lows of rock and roll. Initially lonely and longing for adventure, Morrigan gets it when she auditions to be the rock critic for English magazine D ME with a review of “Tomorrow” from the musical Annie. Writing under the alias Dolly Wilde, Morrigan constructs a version of herself she thinks other people prefer but loses herself in the process. Critics say what follows is an earnest but devilish adventure into teen girlhood, and how finding yourself can mean breaking yourself down and starting from scratch. Variety writes, “How to Build a Girl dares to argue that reinventing yourself doesn’t make you a poseur.”Release date TBD.Waves (2019) 84%© A24Still sizzling from the Certified Fresh Luce, Kelvin Harrison Jr. leads the highly acclaimed Waves alongside a cast of highly recognizable faces. Written and directed by Trey Edward Shults, Waves explores the struggles of a young African-American teen with his family and his ambitions, and his ultimate fall from grace. The film is “a kinetic essay on the beauty of the body in motion” according to the Los Angeles Times, and blends music and memory to create what Film Inquiry calls a “grandiose, quasi-Greek tragedy.”In limited release November 15, 2019.Hala (2019) 86%Courtesy of TIFFThis quiet, contemporary coming-of-age film written and directed by Minhal Baig is a stunner in every way that matters. Starring Geraldine Viswanathan (the breakout star of 2018’s Blockers) in the titular role, Hala explores the intimacy of family life and the weight of cultural expectations. As Hala, a young Muslim woman of Pakistani descent, comes into herself and discovers the ways in which her parents were people before she came along, she begins to find the dividing line between who they are, who she is, and who they want her to be.Faced with budding romantic and sexual feelings and her parents’ disapproval, Hala starts meeting a male classmate in secret, telling as many lies as are necessary to give her a solid alibi. But when she discovers a devastating secret about the state of her parents’ marriage, she’s forced to re-evaluate her position in the family and her willingness to pretend for the sake of appearances. As 812 Film Reviews puts it, the film “balances the familiar with the foreign to pull for a girl whose strength of freedom is at once powerful and quiet.” In limited release November 22, 2019.Clemency (2019) 91%© Neon Chinonye Chukwu’s sophomore feature stars Alfre Woodard as Bernadine Williams in what Nick Allen of rogerebert.com calls a “towering performance [that] is sure to push her into awards contention.” Woodard takes on the role of a prison warden tasked with carrying out the execution of inmate Anthony Woods (Aldis Hodge). The film not only explores the emotional toll executions take on the prisoners facing certain death, but also digs into the long-term psychological effects of being mandated to take another human life.As Woodard’s Bernadine struggles with taking pride in a job that means carrying out legal but often unjust sentences, her marriage crumbles. Populated with strong supporting performances from the likes of Wendell Pierce and Danielle Brooks, Clemency is a study in how the barbaric can become mundane, and what changes for the people forced to witness or inflict violence as a matter of course. In limited release December 27, 2019.Honey Boy (2019) 94%© AmazonShia LaBeouf makes his screenwriting debut and stars as an analogue of his father in a reimagining of his own life story. Honey Boy recounts the difficult childhood of Otis Lort (Lucas Hedges) as he reflects on life with his abusive father. Reckoning with the trauma of his past, LaBeouf finds a way to create “the cinematic exorcism needed to deal with a major actor’s PTSD,” according to Brian Tallerico at rogerebert.com. A.A. Dowd at the AV Club writes of LaBeouf: “It’s just fascinating to see the actor play with the power of his persona and our association with it.” A Quiet Place’s Noah Jupe plays young Otis, giving a performance that EW s Leah Greenblatt calls “remarkably tender and unsentimental. In limited release November 8, 2019.Midnight Family (2019) 97%A documentary that provides what The Hollywood Reporter calls “a visceral understanding of the cutthroat nature of this private-ambulance business,” Midnight Family follows the exploits of a family of EMTs in Mexico City as they try to make a living by providing critical medical care. Filling in the gaps left by the government’s inadequate resources, the Ochoa family battles with other private ambulance providers to race to the scene of accidents and earn their keep – all while knowing that they have no recourse should a client be unable or simply refuse to pay.As they come up against the glad-handing and corruption of the city (money changes hands in transactions that seem less than legal), it is the 17-year-old Juan Ochoa who maintains order in the household, taking care of his brother, minding the money frugally, and trying to keep his struggling family together. As Alissa Wilkinson at Vox puts it, Midnight Family is ultimately a “sweet, fascinating portrait of a group of people trying to make the best of a bad situation, and sometimes succeeding.”In limited release November 15, 2019.Like this? American Gods executive producer–author promises transcendent season 2, Outlander season 5 update, Starz introduces racy new millennial sex comedy, the Crawleys get supersized in Downton Abbey movie, and more.TOP STORYCaitriona Balfe s Claire Fraser Will Have a New Role in Outlander Season 5(Photo by Starz)Caitriona Balfe is just weeks away from filming season 5 of Outlander. Since season 4 used elements from the fourth and fifth books in the series, it sounds like season 5 will already hit book six, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, which leads up to 1776 in North Carolina — quite a significant year in American history. Before heading off to film, Balfe told Rotten Tomatoes a few more details about about Claire Fraser s journey in the new season.“Last season, her doctor side in some ways is put to one side,” Balfe said. “We got to see little glimpses of it. I think now that they’re going to settled in Fraser’s Ridge, it’s a real opportunity to establish herself in getting that kind of professional side of her life back in an order that is very fulfilling for her. So I think that’s exciting too.”The Fraser clan is growing in season 5 as Brianna (Sophie Skelton) has a baby whose health complications may require a return to the present for medical care.“[Claire s] a grandmother this season, which I think is a really interesting time in a woman’s life,” Balfe said. “It’s great to be able to explore that and have an extended family be around and also to deepen this marriage and this relationship in new ways because their life now is very new. This is a new role they’re taking on. It’s a new place and they’ve settled into this new community so I think it’s really interesting.”The season will cover a fraught time for both the country and the Fraser family, as Claire and her beloved, Jamie (Sam Heughan), are on the front lines of the birth of America as well as their grandchild.“I think there’s a lot of interesting things that we’re going to get to explore in terms of family, in terms of loyalties, especially in politics,” Balfe said. “It’s very new to me, all of this kind of time in American history. To understand the intricacies of what was going on in America in that time during its infancy, the people that were coming into the country, who their allegiances lay with. It’s all really interesting stuff, and it’s very new so that makes it really exciting.”Despite Behind-the-Scenes Drama, American Gods Season 2 Feels Like the Same Show The drama behind the scenes of Starz s American Gods has been well-documented — original showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departed after writing about half the scripts for season 2, with Jesse Alexander appointed as new showrunner two months later — but creator (and book author) Neil Gaiman told reporters that viewers shouldn t notice any difference in quality between the two seasons. I was on the show before Bryan and Michael came on as showrunners; I got to watch that being made, he said. I got to watch them leave and Jesse come on and take season 2. From my perspective, the thing that has been made as season 2 feels like the same show that we had for season 1. Part of that is because we have amazing actors, part of that is because a lot of the people didn t change.(Photo by Starz) It still looks and feels like American Gods, he continued.  It s definitely taken a while to get season 2 out, but it takes a while to get good things made and I think we d all rather have it good than have it quicker — although we d rather have it quicker too. The Crawleys Turn Volume to 11 on Downton Abbey Movie(Photo by Nick Briggs/Carnival Film & Television Limited 2014)The Downton Abbey movie hits theaters on September 20, and its stars are still keeping as frustratingly tight-lipped as ever when it comes to discussing the upcoming film. I don t even know what I can tell you, star Laura Carmichael (a.k.a. Edith Crawley) told USA Today and a small group of reporters on Tuesday. What can I remember has been released? There’s some new exciting people, which was dreamy. New cast members which you’ll love and enjoy. Unfortunately, that s just about all Carmichael, who next stars in Starz s drama The Spanish Princess, could say about what happens, though she did reveal that she thinks everyone will be pleased that we’ve upped the ante. Turned the volume up. Whether it s the end of the road for the Crawleys and their staff is something only creator Julian Fellowes can address. I can’t speak for other people, Carmichael said. But I can say we all had a dreamy time, it was lush. SpongeBob SquarePants Turns 20SpongeBob SquarePants celebrates its 20th birthday this summer. Like other beloved animated series (including The Simpsons and Family Guy), the series has managed to remain in the zeitgeist for multiple decades (though SpongeBob is a show both kids and adults can enjoy together). How, exactly, has the Nickelodeon series managed to remain so topical? Man, that’s the million-dollar question, said Bill Fagerbakke, who voices SpongeBob s pal Patrick Star. I don’t know if there’s a formula. There’s something mercurial and enigmatic about it. And I’ve come to think it’s a magical combination of shapes, colors, and sounds. We don’t know! Rodger Bumpass, who voices SpongeBob s frenemy Squidward, likens the series to Looney Tunes. They’re both short cartoons, but different ages of people and viewers get different things. Little kids get something out of it cause it’s colorful and it’s animated. And then the little older guys get a little bit more stuff out of it, and adults get something out of it too. And funny is funny, so I think that’s one of the reasons it has struck a chord, Bumpass said.SpongeBob himself, a.k.a. Tom Kenny, thinks some of the magic of his character comes from the fact that everyone wants to root for him and he s avoided any type of controversy. SpongeBob really does seem to have this charmed life and this magic power where people, you know, they didn’t just like it a little bit. They started to really like it and love it, and it found its way into the fabric of people’s lives, and it kept finding new life in new ways like memes and things like that, Kenny said. And even on the couple of occasions where there’s been something a little controversial that’s happened, SpongeBob still winds up winning. SpongeBob still winds up on top. For example, the latest Super Bowl halftime show was a tad controversial, but people didn t take any umbrage with the fact that SpongeBob made an appearance.Said Kenny, People get mad at the NFL. They don’t get mad at SpongeBob. You know what I mean? They don’t hate on SpongeBob. They hate on Maroon 5. The Rook EP Explains Why British People Are Good at Spy DramasThe new Starz drama The Rook, based on the book of the same name by Daniel O Malley, is both a tense British spy thriller and a supernatural drama. When Myfanwy Thomas (Emma Greenwell) wakes up in the rain next to London s Millennium Bridge, she can t remember who she is or how she wound up next to a pile of dead bodies. But she soon learns that she s a high-ranking official in the Checquy, a secret organization involving people with paranormal abilities. The London-set series was run by two American showrunners, Lisa Zerling and Karyn Usher, though it stars a mostly British cast (save for Olivia Munn). British executive producer Stephen Garrett said the series works because his people are experts in the spy genre. The Rook denotes [Myfanwy s] rank in the organization, and clearly there are bishops and queens who are higher than her, but I think what drew us all to this is it s a spy show with supernatural elements. The great thing about spy shows, and why the British are good at them, [is because] we re naturally duplicitous, we re very good at lying, and we love secrets, Garrett joked. So if you re a spy you can t tell your friends or your loved ones what it is you do, and I think if you have supernatural powers, you can t tell your loved ones what it is you have. So you have secrets to the power of 10, and that s just a heady mix for a great drama. Maybe Don t Watch the Racy Now Apocalypse With Your Parents(Photo by Starz)Gregg Araki s new Starz drama, Now Apocalypse, is a sex-infused, surreal adventure about stoner twentysomethings navigating the dating world and Los Angeles in general. Ulysses (Avan Jogia) also starts having premonitory dreams, causing him to wonder if there s a dark conspiracy going on around him or he s just smoking too much weed. There s a lot of nudity and sex, but star Jogia told reporters that he thinks the show will attract a multi-generational audience. As he pointed out, the older generation, quote unquote, grew up during sex lib. But if you re thinking about watching the show with your parents, whether that s a good decision or not really depends on how sexually liberated you and your parents are. The show sounds very punk rock, and attuned toward sex and sexuality, Araki said. We have BDSM, and we have water sports, and we have a sex club and a sex orgy, and it s like Whoa, that show sounds nuts. But when I watched it for the first time, there s a real sweetness to it. And this is a testament to the best cast in the whole universe — they really imbue these characters with such vanity and such authenticity. The whole show is grounded in these characters. They re super-sweet and super lovable. It s really about these characters and what they re going through. It s a lot, he admitted — especially in a show he described as Girls, Sex and the City meets Twin Peaks with an alien — but he’s not including those moments for shock value. I m not interested in titillation or making porn, Araki said. It s really about those moments of character truth, and I think that s the strongest thing about the show.
