Not only does she do the iconic character justice, but she’s looking to follow original Mary Poppins star Julie Andrews to Oscar recognition (but can she win, too?). Overall, the long-awaited sequel may not work for absolutely everybody, but in addition to awards favor, it’s sure to be a huge hit with many. Here’s the first wave of critical buzz, as drawn from Twitter reactions, on Mary Poppins Returns:Is the sequel worth the wait?I loved Mary Poppins Returns! Jenna Busch, Legion of LeiaMary Poppins Returns is an exquisitely made film. Germain Lussier, io9I was in delight the entire way through Mary Poppins Returns…it’s a lovely little spot of happy. Alisha Grauso, Film School RejectsMary Poppins Returns is absolutely delightful, packed with old school charm, and it keeps you smiling the entire time. Erik Davis, FandangoHow does it compare to the original? It felt SO similar to the original. New songs, better technology, same story and themes. I definitely recommend it, though. Germain Lussier, io9This isn t trying to be Creed or Rocky Balboa; it s aimed squarely at Rocky II: The first one, again effect. Bob Chipman, Geek.comIt s faithful to the original without being beholden to it. Alisha Grauso, Film School RejectsThe movie just attempts to recreate too much of the original and totally fails to recapture its magic. 谢邀，英雄联盟手游台服于12月7号就上线了，这次繁体中文给大家带来了很大的期待，下载方法挺多的，这里分享自己lol手游台服的下载方法：欧宝体育登录Although the consequences of COVID-19 made New York Comic Con cancel its usual convention experience, ReedPOP, the organization behind the annual celebration of geek chic, still managed to corral some of its energy with NYCC Metaverse. The four-day event featured plenty of video panels on NYCC’s YouTube channel, a handful of exclusive merchandise for those who go to cons to shop, and even an attempt at a virtual dealer’s room that may give you some idea of the madness involved in navigating a real one. That said, the event was still muted in comparison to a full-fledged weekend at New York’s Javits Center. The film industry s continuing need to push back release dates means no high-profile movies to promote and even the comics industry itself is preparing for a lonelier, digital future. Lucky for us, television still offers a lot to NYCC – in fact, the 2019 convention felt like the show for TV. And even with fewer events, the virtual 2020 show still felt like a huge showcase for broadcast networks, streaming services, and cable outlets. Here’s a rundown of the big reveals and updates TV shows offered to fans over the course of NYCC the past few days.Star Trek Universe Panel Reveals Captain (?) Kathryn Janeway Set to ReturnWith Star Trek: Lower Decks ending its first season and Star Trek: Discovery about to begin its third, the Star Trek Universe panel dedicated its big news to the return of a welcome friend: Kate Mulgrew and her Star Trek: Voyager character Kathryn Janeway. Mulgrew will once again play the part in Star Trek: Prodigy, an animated series being developed for Nickelodeon. It will focus on a group of teenagers who commandeer a decommissioned starship. And from Mulgrew’s comments, it seems Janeway will be mentoring the young starfarers in some way. “How thrilling to be able to introduce these young minds to an idea that has elevated the world for decades,” she said. The announcement, of course, sent Trek fans into a tizzy as they debated Janeway’s role and even her rank – last time we saw her in Star Trek: Nemesis, she was an admiral, but the Prodigy press release referred to her as “captain.” Her real position on the show will, no doubt, spark more debate. On the other shows, Discovery is preparing to send viewers the far-flung future of 3187 and the Lower Decks gang teased Boimler’s (Jack Quaid) new position on the Titan will not change in the second season. Well, at least not at first. Sadly, overall Star Trek creative director Alex Kurtzman offered no updates on Star Trek: Picard’s second season or the in-development Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but he did tell one outlet he has enough ideas to keep Discovery on the air until 2027.Star Trek: Discovery returns this week.Doctor Who Set to Go Back Into Production, Plus New Details on this Year s Holiday Special COVID-19 even kept The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) sheltering in place this year, but the Doctor Who star was thrilled to mention cast and crew are preparing to go back into production on Season 13 soon. In fact, you can hear someone in the Zoom call say they may be back to work in the next couple of weeks.”The program is no stranger to long production breaks – it took nearly 15 years off, after all – but there will be at least one episode of Doctor Who in 2020: the holiday special “Revolution of the Daleks.” Whittaker teased The Doctor will be in an intergalactic prison for a long time and “has no idea what’s happening on Earth.” The TARDIS Team (or “fam”), meanwhile, try to get on with their lives. Yaz (Mandip Gill) has the hardest time re-acclimating to the slower pace of Sheffield, but any sort of domestic tidings are obliterated when a Dalek comes to town. Somehow, Yaz, Ryan (Tosin Cole), and Graham (Bradley Walsh) have to deal with the genocidal alien without The Doctor.“Talk about being thrown in the deep end,” Walsh said of their predicament. The group offered two preview photos of the special, but scheduling for the episode has not been finalized.Amazon Gives First Look at Invincible, Starring Steven YeunAfter what seems like an eternity, Amazon and co-creator Robert Kirkman finally unveiled footage from the upcoming animated adaptation of Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley’s Invincible. The series stars The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun as the son of an alien superhero. At age 16, his powers finally manifest and he must learn the family trade. That seemingly innocent brief hides the mature themes and extreme violence the comic and the series will explore. Beyond a cast which includes Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Mark Hamill, and more, Kirkman announced Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Michael Dorn will lend his voice to Battle Beast – a former planetary guardian with an addiction to combat. The show is expected to premiere sometime next year. The Expanse Promises Most Epic Season Yet Season 5 of Amazon’s beloved science-fiction series The Expanse will be its most epic and the most personal season,” according to showrunner Naren Shankar. Centering on the notion that “you reap what you sow,” seeds of revolution and interpersonal conflict planted as far back as Season 1 will finally bear fruit. “It’s taking the people we’ve fallen in love with over the last four years and peeling back the layers,” he added. The story will also ask if they can “survive the most high-pressure situations they’ve ever been through” with their principles intact.Like Amazon’s superhero hit The Boys, The Expanse will offer the first three episodes of Season 5 on December 16 with the subsequent episodes releasing on a weekly basis.Snowpiercer Shares First Look At Season 2, Shares Details on Sean Bean s New CharacterSnowpiercer came to NYCC with a teaser for their upcoming season and a discussion of new characters Mr. Wilford (Sean Bean) and Alexandra Cavill (Rowan Blanchard). Both have key connections to Jennifer Connelly’s Melanie Cavill and it sounds like life will not be easy for her as Wilford’s train, Big Alice, barrels toward Snowpiercer. It also means profound troubles for Layton (Daveed Diggs) and his fledgling democracy aboard the titular locomotive. Showrunner Graeme Manson teased Big Alice’s society as something decidedly more authoritarian and the preview suggests Wilford and Layton are on a collision course all their own.Season 2 debuts on January 25The Watch Set to Take Some Liberties in Adapting Terry Pratchett s City Watch NovelsThe most important takeaway from BBC America’s panel for the upcoming series The Watch: Wendell Pierce is now part of the very small fraternity to voice author Terry Pratchett’s version of Death! Matt Berry will also appear as a talking sword called Wayne in the punk rock fantasy inspired by Pratchett’s City Watch novels (themselves set within the writer’s larger Discworld).Executive producers Richard Stokes and Simon Allen were quick to admit the show takes some liberties with Pratchett’s world and characters – nary a plate of armor to be found anywhere! – but it still sets out to honor the sarcastic and anarchic worlds Pratchett created, right down to the Watch being hamstrung by the city’s quasi-legal organized crime guilds. His books are full of rich characters and wonderful environments, Stokes said.Allen, who also serves as showrunner, went one step further in his admiration of Pratchett, telling viewers, Go read the books. They will change your life! The series features characters like Constable Carrot (Adam Hugill), a six-foot, broad-shouldered man who grew up believing he was a dwarf; an actual dwarf who moved to the city to escape the race s rigid unary gender system and uses “queer magic a conflicted werewolf with concerns about Carrot’s devotion to the Watch; and Watch captain Sam Vimes (Richard Dormer), a “dissolute” alcoholic according to the actor. Other characters include a noble turned vigilante with a pet dragon, a city ruler who “uses sarcasm more than anything else,” and recurring antagonist Karcer Dun (Sam Adewunmi), who the producers said may prove to be less of a villain as time goes on.The Watch comes to BBC America in January 3rd.The Walking Dead Panel Teases Crossovers and a Whole New Element to Its UniverseThe Walking Dead might be ending (eventually), but the zombie universe shambles on with two additional series on the air right now and plans for a further spin-off and anthology series in development – then, of course, there s that feature film with original star Andrew Lincoln on the way. It was so much content, AMC had to split its NYCC Walking Dead panels across two days. On the first day, a Showrunners Summit saw TWD Chief Content Officer Scott Gimple refer to a “far-flung story” which may see characters from the newest series, The Walking Dead: The World Beyond meeting up with favorites from Fear the Walking Dead or the original series. Considering World Beyond s focus on CRM, its story and Rick s (Lincoln) could intersect.Meanwhile, Fear will introduce a new sort of bounty hunter who specializes in locating people even if they ve become Walkers. Also, Morgan s (Lennie James) weird red eyes (as glimpsed in a clip shown during the panel) will be explored throughout the season as his new situation will lead to a whole new element of the Walking Dead universe.Back on the original Walking Dead, the Commonwealth and Maggie s (Lauren Cohan) reaction to Negan s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) new place in the community will become the focus of the bonus Season 10 episodes currently in production. The 24-episode final season will occur sometime afterward, proving there is still plenty of life to The Walking Dead.Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: The World Beyond are currently airing on AMC.Syfy s Resident Alien Reveals First 10 MinutesSyfy brought the first 10 minutes of its new series Resident Alien to NYCC. Based on the Dark Horse comics by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse, the show stars Alan Tudyk as an extraterrestrial on a “diabolical” mission who must disguise himself as a country doctor in a Colorado backwater when his ship crashes. According to showrunner Chris Sheridan, “he’s getting to know what it’s like to be human.” That exposure to humans is an element straight from the comic, although his drive to recover a lost tool to complete his mission is a new concept from Sheridan. Will becoming Dr. Harry Vanderspeigle alter his sense of duty? We’ll find out next year.Resident Alien debuts on Syfy in January.American Gods Adds New Characters As It Moves LakesideArmed with a trailer, American Gods confirmed it is finally making its way to the Lakeside portion of author Neil Gaiman’s book. Star Ricky Whittle said it was a “comfort” to know where the story is going – especially as Lakeside gives his character, Shadow Moon, a whole new status quo while he ponders the revelation about his father. Gaiman referred to Lakeside as a “little Twin Peaks-y story of its own.” Nevertheless, new showrunner Chuck Eglee forced Gaiman to consider what the other characters are doing while Shadow soul-searches and the stories they developed as a consequence will take the material in new directions.Besides introducing a clearer motivation for the new gods via Bruce Langley’s Technical Boy, the series will introduce a brand-new character, Cordelia, to the mix. Played by Ashley Reyes, Gaiman called the character, who takes Shadow’s place at Mr. Wednesday’s (Ian McShane) side, an “astonishing” addition.“For a human, she knows what she’s doing,” Reyes said of Cordelia, adding she “brings the humanity” out of the old god. Having no family of her own, she clings to him quickly. It may lead to some initial conflict with Shadow when they meet, but they have quite a strong bond” as the season wears on.And though it sounds like the characters will spend a lot of time apart, the trailer suggests a reunion between Shadow and Wednesday is set for sooner rather than later.American Gods returns in early 2021.Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. Will Be Unlike Any Other Marvel Series We ve Seen Offering a few clips during their NYCC appearance, the cast and producer of Hulu’s upcoming M.O.D.O.K. series unveiled a glimpse into the home life of Marvel’s Mental Organism Designed Only For Killing. Patton Oswalt, who also serves as a producer, voices the beleaguered Marvel supervillain. Forced to sell his company to a competitor, he’s now a workaday Joe facing a destiny he no longer controls and a wife, Jodie (Aimee Garcia), whose home business is now more successful than he is. Then there’s his “queen bee” daughter Melissa (Melissa Fumero) – or M.E.L.I.S.S.A. depending on who you talk to – who wants to follow in M.O.D.O.K.’s footsteps, and his super-happy son Lou (Ben Schwartz), whose interests in magic and Judaism set him apart from the rest of the family.Realized by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios – the crew behind Robot Chicken – using stop-motion animation, M.O.D.O.K. looks like no other Marvel series. Indeed, it won’t be like any other Marvel series as it is one of the handful of idiosyncratic projects Hulu greenlit before Marvel Studios took over all of Marvel Entertainment’s creative endeavors.M.O.D.O.K. is coming soon to Hulu.Helstrom Shows Off First 10 Minutes, Future Remains Uncertain One of the other final Marvel Television projects for Hulu, Helstrom, screened the first 10 minutes of its first episode, in which Dr. Hastings (June Carryl) faces another tough night at the asylum and Daimon (Tom Austen) discovers his exorcism for the evening is nothing of the sort.Somewhere between family drama and horror TV show, Helstrom shares that “like no other Marvel show” vibe with M.O.D.O.K. And like that animated program, its future is unknown.Helstrom debuts this week.Shadow and Bone Reveals Musical Theme, Promises Ocean s 11 and Game of Thrones HybridAuthor Leigh Bardugo and executive producer Eric Heisserer offered a genuinely odd preview of the Grishaverse series Shadow and Bone. Thanks to COVID-19 and the lead-time needed to complete special effects, the pair offered no trailer. But they did convince Netflix to let them preview composer Joseph Trapanese’s “Grisha theme.” Heisserer described the series as “Ocean’s 11 in a Dickensian/Game of Thrones world” and promised he is trying hard to avoid putting the VFX crew into a grueling crunch period. Consequently, it may still take some time for any footage from the show – which stars Kit Young, Jessie Mei Li, and Ben Barnes as The Darkling – to materialize.Netflix Charmer Hilda Gets Epic and Introduces A New AntagonistOne of the most charming comic book adaptations on a streaming service is set to make its Netflix return this December. It follows Hilda (Game of Thrones’ Bella Ramsey), a young girl who moves from the wilds to the relative metropolis of Trollburg. Her spirit of adventure never wavers, and in a world filled with monsters and secrets, that tenacity is a strength and a weakness. So much so, in fact, Ramsey revealed a song she wrote about Hilda’s inability to learn from her mistakes will be featured during the end credits of a Season 2 episode.Comic book creator Luke Pearson and head writer Stephanie Simpson teased the show will become more epic with the arrival of a genuine antagonist for Hilda – the chief of Trollburg’s safety patrol – and a further exploration of the city’s stranger quarters, like an old mill and a rumored witch’s tower which both moves from location to location and descends into the ground instead of building into the sky.Director Andy Coyle called Pearson and Simpson’s plans “big ‘scope’ ideas, especially for a TV show.” Although he was quick to add the biggest challenge of Hilda, the more subtle emotions of abstracted cartoon characters, remains the same. “It sounds counter-intuitive, but that’s way harder to pull off than a hoard of giant monsters in a kinetic set-piece.”Hilda returns to Netflix in December.Stargirl Will Face Off Against Eclipso In Season 2 (Which Is Still A Long Ways Off)Make no mistake, Stargirl’s second season is a long way off. Officially slated for The CW’s nebulous 2021 midseason, executive producer Geoff Johns told his cast during their NYCC session that the writers are in the midst of putting Episode 4 together. Nonetheless, they convinced him to offer some answers about the marathon of teases included at the end of Season 1. The major villain will be Eclipso, a creature of darkness who killed both Yolanda Montez and Beth Chapel in the pages of his own short-lived DC comic book. Both actors Yvette Monreal and Anjelika Washington hope to avoid their counterparts fate. Johns added Eclipso is a “scarier” threat than the Injustice Society and it will be quite a journey for Stargirl (Brec Bassinger) and the Justice Society of America to defeat him.Though once a member of the ISA, it is unclear if The Shade – another character teased at the end of Season 1 – will be a friend or foe. Johns was quick to credit fellow series producer James Robinson with making the character compelling in his 1990s Starman series. In Robinson’s book, the character merely dabbled in villainy as it suited his own purposes and it seems he may do the same here. The biggest of the teases was, of course, the revelation that Starman (Joel McHale) is still alive. Johns said his reason for showing up now will become clearer by the end of Season 2’s first episode. He also mentioned the other objects Stargirl stole from the old JSA headquarters will find new owners while Yolanda (Monreal) comes to grips with killing someone.Stargirl returns sometime in 2021.Pennyworth Sets December Premiere for Season 2Though the COVID-19 pandemic delayed Pennyworth’s second season, it is still making a 2020 debut. Set for a December 13 premiere on Epix, the program will air four episodes into the early part of January before taking a pause to complete the remaining six episodes. It sounds like it will be worth the wait.Show creator Bruno Heller and stars Jack Bannon, Ben Aldridge, and Paloma Faith offered NYCC viewers a brief preview of events. Set one year after the conclusion of Season 1, the war everyone worked to prevent has broken out and Thomas Wayne (Aldridge) is back in London looking after the CIA’s interests. Martha (Emma Paetz) is ready to fight for order, but Alfred (Bannon) wants nothing more than to earn enough money to move to the United States. Confusing matters, though, is Martha’s pregnancy. Though the child is presumably Thomas’s son, Aldridge and Bannon talked over each other to suggest things may not be so clear cut. Further complicating the issue: Thomas is engaged to a fine woman back in the States, although Heller characterized her as a part of the “old world” Thomas wants to escape. He event went to far as to call her a “throwaway gag.”Perhaps more solid are the new additions to the cast: Simon Manyonda as Lucius Fox and Jessica de Gouw as Melanie Troy. The former is a well-established member of the Batman supporting cast, although he will be “working for the bad guys” at the start, according to Heller. Troy, meanwhile, is the wife of Alfred’s wartime commanding officer. Nonetheless, they will have an “immediate connection.”Bet’s (Faith) loyalty to Lord Harwood (Jason Flemyng) will be rewarded with a position in his new regime. And as Faith put it, “She’s the sort of person who gets carried away in the uniform.”On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.Photo thumbnail courtesy of The CW, Starz, AMC

When it comes to Pixar’s flagship movie series, there’s no such thing as sequelitis or franchise fatigue. With Toy Story 4 arriving 24 years after the original and nine years after the release of the Best Picture-nominated Toy Story 3, we’re reportedly still going to be laughing and crying and having as good a time as ever with Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang. A number of critics saw Toy Story 4 early and are now sharing their thoughts on social media. Not only do we still have friends in the group from Andy’s old toy box, but apparently some of the new characters are memorable additions, too. Here’s what critics are saying on social media about Toy Story 4:Has Pixar done it again?Only Pixar at the top of their game can make a third sequel to a franchise about living toys that’s a poignant look at learning to prioritize your own happiness over the happiness of others. Jacob Hall, SlashfilmThe level of animation that Pixar has achieved in this film is astounding… I loved the entire movie. So well done. Absolutely recommended. Steven Weintraub, ColliderDefinitely a quality Pixar film and one of their best sequels. JoBlo.comIf you were nervous about another Toy Story movie, don’t be! 9.55.2 8月喜迎Today s Ketchup brings you ten headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles such as Avengers 4, Gladiator 2, The Meg 2, and The Time Machine. This WEEK S TOP STORYARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED? RIDLEY SCOTT MOVES FORWARD WITH GLADIATOR SEQUEL(Photo by DreamWorks courtesy Everett Collection)Director Ridley Scott has had so many film projects in development over his career that they have their own Wikipedia page. (Some of those movies, like Alien 5, Blade Runner 2, Dune, I Am Legend, and Tristan Isolde were eventually directed by other filmmakers.) It s anyone s guess as to whether we will ever get The Merlin Saga, Monopoly, or The Prisoner, but one of the longest-running ideas still yet to be realized is a sequel to 2000 s Gladiator (which won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe), and Scott is again considering directing a Gladiator sequel. The proposed sequel would tell the decades-later story of Lucius Verus, the son of Lucilla, and the nephew of the emperor Commodus (played in the first film, respectively, by Spencer Treat Clark, Connie Nielsen, and Joaquin Phoenix). DreamWorks no longer has the rights to a Gladiator sequel, so the project is now at Paramount, which, with Ridley Scott s production company, has hired screenwriter Peter Craig (cowriter of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1/2, and 2020 s Top Gun: Maverick) to work on the sequel. There doesn t appear to be much historical evidence of the real Lucius Verus becoming a gladiator, but Gladiator also suggested a detour from history anyway.Fresh Developments1. AVENGERS 4 CASTING IGNITES NEW RUMORS(Photo by Marvel Studios)Avengers 4 comes out in just six months from this Saturday (May 3, 2019), but there remains so much that we don t know. Heck, we don t even know the title yet. Marvel Studios is somehow sustaining that mystery even while they continue their second stage of production. This week, 13 Reasons Why co-star Katherine Langford was cast as someone in Avengers 4, with no clues about who that might be. That just means, however, that every fan who s read actual comics can now speculate who Langford might play, and in today s world, many of those fans are actual professional writers. One obvious reason for the mystery is that Langford s character might hint at Marvel Studios future plans. A front runner guess (possibly because she has the same first name) is Kate Bishop, AKA Hawkeye, who takes over after (and during) Clint Barton s era. Other possibilities include Clea (an ally of Doctor Strange), Queen Veranke (of the Skrulls from Captain Marvel), and longtime Avengers member Sersi (of The Eternals, who are someday getting their own movie). Meanwhile, Marvel Studios is developing shows for the upcoming Disney streaming app, which may include a team-up limited series starring Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). There has previously been talk about shows for Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) that are also limited series (probably 6 to 8 episodes), starting in 2019.2. EWAN MCGREGOR TO DON BLACK MASK AS BAT-VILLAIN IN BIRDS OF PREY (Photo by Neil Davidson/IFC Films courtesy Everett Collection)If we start the clock in 1989 with Tim Burton s first Batman, there have been seven solo Batman movies in the modern era. Although we have obviously had three Jokers, two Two-Faces, and two Catwomans, for the most part the franchise focused on introducing new Bat-villains (the Spider-Man movies also tend to do this). Birds of Prey, featuring Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Detective Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), is part of DC Comics extended Bat-Family of titles, so it will also feature a Batman-related villain. This time, it s Black Mask s turn, and he will be played by Ewan McGregor, making his superhero movie debut. The Birds of Prey version of Black Mask is described as a brutally sadistic kingpin in Gotham City’s criminal underworld who has a fixation with masks. McGregor and Mary Elizabeth-Winstead previously co-starred together as a romantic couple dabbling in a life in crime in Fargo Season 3. You can read more about Black Mask s road to the big screen right here. Warner Bros. has scheduled Birds of Prey for release on February 7, 2020, up against Peter Rabbit 2, and the week after the Shining sequel Doctor Sleep, also starring Ewan McGregor.3. IT DIRECTOR ADAPTING ATTACK ON TITAN AND THE TIME MACHINEIt is entirely expected that directors coming off two hit films like Mama and IT will be wanted for high profile films, but Andy Muschietti actually had that happen twice this week. First, on Monday, we learned that Muschietti had signed with Warner Bros. to direct their live action adaptation of the popular manga series Attack on Titan (which has also been adapted as an anime). Attack on Titan is set in a bizarre future in which mankind is beset by gigantic creatures called Titans who resemble humans (without their skin, so their muscles are exposed it s kind of gross). Warner Bros is also the studio behind next year s Godzilla: King of the Monsters (5/31/2019) and Godzilla vs Kong (5/22/2020), so it makes total sense they d also be interested in Attack on Titan. The second new project for Andy Muschietti this week is also at Warner Bros., with Leonardo DiCaprio s Appian Way also on board. They have recruited Muschietti to start development on a new adaptation of H.G. Wells science fiction classic The Time Machine. The two most popular previous adaptations were released in 1960 (Fresh at 77%) and in 2002 (Rotten at 29%). It s not yet known whether DiCaprio is considering starring in The Time Machine. Andy Muschietti wrapped filming of IT: Chapter Two this week for release next year on September 6, 2019.4. SACHA BARON COHEN, EDDIE REDMAYNE, AND THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 (Photo by Focus Features)Up above, we mentioned director Ridley Scott has been attached to a lot of movies, but he s got nothing on Steven Spielberg. Spielberg is now deeply in preproduction on his remake of West Side Story, and on Indiana Jones 5, but up until a few years ago, one of his projects was The Trial of the Chicago 7, depicting the true stories of the protestors at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Spielberg is still producing The Trial of the Chicago 7, but it will now be directed by its screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin (Molly s Game). Sacha Baron Cohen (who nearly starred as Freddie Mercury in this week s Bohemian Rhapsody) is also in early talks to play one of the protest s leaders, Abbie Hoffman (of the Yippies ). That news would have been a lot for one week, but Eddie Redmayne is also now in talks to play Tom Hayden, one of the student leaders (and future husband of Jane Fonda).5. MICHAEL KEATON TO PLAY ANTI-VIRUS ICON JOHN MCAFEE IN KING OF THE JUNGLE(Photo by The Weinstein Company)Many corporate leaders and innovators lead pretty boring lives, but then there s John McAfee, who lent his surname to the popular line of McAfee antivirus software. John McAfee is back in the United States now, but for several years, he was on the run in Central America after accusations in 2012 that he had been involved in a murder in Belize. This incredible true story will soon become a movie called King of the Jungle, and we now know who will be the film s two male stars. Michael Keaton will play McAfee, and Seth Rogen will pay a journalist who finds himself drawn into McAfee’s escalating paranoia, slippery reality, and murder. King of the Jungle will be directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (the co-directors of Crazy Stupid Love) from a screenplay by the writing team of Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, Man on the Moon). Michael Keaton comes to King of the Jungle after the departure of the film s first announced star, Johnny Depp.6. CHRIS ROCK TO DIRECT KEVIN HART IN CO-PARENTING(Photo by Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images)Since making his directorial debut in 2003 with the political comedy Head of State, comedian Chris Rock has also directed 2007 s I Think I Love My Wife and 2014 s Top Five. Rock also starred in all three of those films, but for his fourth film as director, he has instead recruited Kevin Hart as his lead. Kevin Hart will star in Co-Parenting, a family comedy from screenwriter Yamara Taylor (TV s black-ish), playing a stay at home dad who raises the kids while his star CEO wife serves as the breadwinner [until he] finds himself in emotional and public turmoil when his wife kicks him to the curb, and they engage in a bitter divorce and custody battle. So, perhaps it s not all comedy (the tone is being compared to some of the films of Judd Apatow and James L. Brooks).7. TYLER PERRY ANNOUNCES 2019 TO BE THE END OF MADEA (Photo by Lionsgate)Every once in a while, we interpret a news story as a Fresh Development because it involves a turnaround for something that would otherwise be Rotten. For example, Tyler Perry may have had a great box office run with his Madea character, but no movie with Madea in the title has ever scored above a 37% on the Tomatometer (that was 2011 s Madea s Big Happy Family). So, when Tyler Perry announced this week that 2019 would be the end of the Madea character with Tyler Perry s A Madea Family Funeral (3/1/2019), we see it as a Fresh Development for actual moviegoers. The 10 movies in Tyler Perry s Madea franchise have earned over 0 million to date.ROTTEN IDEAS OF THE WEEK2. THE BOBA FETT SPINOFF IS OFFICALLY DEAD (Photo by 20th Century Fox)Back in June, following the (relatively) disappointing box office numbers for Solo: A Star Wars Story, the world started hearing talk that Lucasfilm might be reconsidering its collective plans for Star Wars Story spinoffs. At that point, there had been discussions about spinoffs for such characters as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and the bounty hunter Boba Fett (and indeed, that might ve been next up). Well, this week, we received confirmation that the project that might ve been called Boba Fett: A Star Wars Story is no longer being developed, with the focus instead going to Jon Favreau s series The Mandalorian for Disney s upcoming streaming service. (Boba Fett wears Mandalorian battle armor.) As for what the Boba Fett spinoff would have included, we also learned this week that several of Boba Fett s fellow bounty hunters would have been featured in the movie, potentially including characters such as IG-88, Bossk, Dengar, 4-Lom, and Zuckus. As this piece points out, however, fans have been fascinated by Boba Fett for 40 years now, so we may yet see Boba Fett return in some form yet, somewhere, someday.1. THE MEG SEQUEL STILL IN DEVELOPMENT(Photo by Warner Bros.)This summer saw the release of the giant shark movie The Meg after the project had been kicked around Hollywood for about 20 years of development. The Meg received a Rotten Tomatometer score of just 46%, but it was still a box office success, earning 2 million domestically and over 7 million globally. One of the changes that was made to the film through the course of its development was a focus on Asian settings, characters, and financing, which was surely part of why the film did so well in many overseas markets. That s probably also why a sequel to The Meg is now in development, as its executive producer Catherine Xujin Ying revealed this week. It s not yet known if Jason Statham or any other co-stars will return for the sequel. In addition to a sequel and a potential film franchise, The Meg may also soon inspire giant-shark theme parks around the world. There s no word yet as to when The Meg 2 might take its giant bite out of the box office (or not).
Is it even possible to make a bad movie about Mr. Rogers? Arriving on the heels of the successful 2018 documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) 95% comes equipped with the too-perfect casting of Tom Hanks as children’s television icon Fred Rogers. The very first critics who saw the film couldn’t help but be charmed by the movie and Hanks’ portrayal, as represented in the first reviews out of the Toronto International Film Festival. Viewers were in tears at the premiere and calling it one of the actors’ best, which says a lot, of course. (Note, these are the very first reviews for the film, drawn mostly from the movie s world premiere at the festival; as the movie is screened in the next few days more early reviews will come in and we will add those to this article as they re published.)Here’s what critics are saying about A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood:Let s get this out of the way: Is Hanks perfect as Rogers?“There’s no question that Hanks is perfect in the part…people will relax into the movie so much that they’ll forget they’re watching an impersonation.” Todd McCarthy, Hollywood Reporter Hanks’ body language is at once stoic and vulnerable, the pace of his speech as Fred is slow, slower than most people. But the actor brings so much focus that it’s impossible to find a reason to move faster, if it would mean missing a single moment spent in his company. Ella Kemp, The Playlist“Hanks’ cuddly pedigree means he was born to play Rogers, and he immerses himself in the role.” Eric Kohn, IndieWire“Hanks isn’t just good — he’s transporting.” Owen Gleiberman, Variety“It’s hard to imagine that his pitch-perfect channeling of Rogers’ magnificent and slightly unsettling calm won’t put him in the thick of a supporting-actor race.” Steve Pond, The Wrap“There’s a sweetness to the performance that never veers towards saccharine; Hanks consistently strays away from any sort of cliches to find deeper meaning.” Jordan Ruimy, World of Reel(Photo by Lacey Terrell)Is this just a standard biopic?“This is no straightforward biopic, and for that we can probably be glad…it’s the rare biopic that doesn’t wander into predictability or cheese, or both.” Sara Stewart, New York Post“It’s absolutely not a biopic…it’s a two-hour therapy session about the relationships we have with our parents and learning to cope with death, with Hanks’ Fred Rogers as a conduit.” Mike Ryan, UproxxAnd it s not even just about Mr. Rogers?“This movie isn’t about Rogers himself: He takes a backseat here, which should worry anybody who might face Hanks for a best-supporting-actor Oscar.” Brian Truitt, USA Today“Perhaps this is the only way to really make a film about Fred Rogers — by making it about the people whose lives he touched.” Hannah Goodhead, Little White Lies“The film is smart enough to not get us too close to Rogers. Look, you just can’t. He’s almost too otherworldly.” Mike Ryan, Uproxx“Some viewers may be disappointed this film isn’t all about Fred Rogers, but after a bit of reflection, I think less may be better.” Sara Stewart, New York PostHow is Marielle Heller s direction? Heller’s filmmaking is a patchwork quilt of influences from Mr Rogers himself. She uses an imagined episode of the show as a framing device; takes musical inspiration from Rogers’ own compositions and puts a miniature Vogel in rabbit ears, enforcing a bonding moment with Mr Rogers’ puppets. Wendy Ide, Screen Daily“Heller, as she proved in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, has a gift for taking straightforward scenes and flooding them with emotion.” Owen Gleiberman, Variety“Heller does take a few ambitious swings, and they always come as a welcome surprise.” Eric Kohn, IndieWire“After her fantastic first two features, The Diary of a Teenage Girl and Can You Ever Forgive Me?, it’s a bit disappointing to see Heller taking on material with no edge at all.” Todd McCarthy, Hollywood Reporter [Heller gives] her audience some kind of recognizable knot in the stomach, one of nostalgia, one of gratitude and grace. Ella Kemp, The Playlist“Having proven herself to be among the more empathetic directors working today, her equally understated delivery reaches the ethos of Rogers’ philosophy.” Luke Parker, We Got This Covered

Since season 4 used elements from the fourth and fifth books in the series, it sounds like season 5 will already hit book six, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, which leads up to 1776 in North Carolina — quite a significant year in American history. Before heading off to film, Balfe told Rotten Tomatoes a few more details about about Claire Fraser s journey in the new season.“Last season, her doctor side in some ways is put to one side,” Balfe said. “We got to see little glimpses of it. I think now that they’re going to settled in Fraser’s Ridge, it’s a real opportunity to establish herself in getting that kind of professional side of her life back in an order that is very fulfilling for her. So I think that’s exciting too.”The Fraser clan is growing in season 5 as Brianna (Sophie Skelton) has a baby whose health complications may require a return to the present for medical care.“[Claire s] a grandmother this season, which I think is a really interesting time in a woman’s life,” Balfe said. “It’s great to be able to explore that and have an extended family be around and also to deepen this marriage and this relationship in new ways because their life now is very new. This is a new role they’re taking on. It’s a new place and they’ve settled into this new community so I think it’s really interesting.”The season will cover a fraught time for both the country and the Fraser family, as Claire and her beloved, Jamie (Sam Heughan), are on the front lines of the birth of America as well as their grandchild.“I think there’s a lot of interesting things that we’re going to get to explore in terms of family, in terms of loyalties, especially in politics,” Balfe said. “It’s very new to me, all of this kind of time in American history. To understand the intricacies of what was going on in America in that time during its infancy, the people that were coming into the country, who their allegiances lay with. It’s all really interesting stuff, and it’s very new so that makes it really exciting.”Despite Behind-the-Scenes Drama, American Gods Season 2 Feels Like the Same Show The drama behind the scenes of Starz s American Gods has been well-documented — original showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departed after writing about half the scripts for season 2, with Jesse Alexander appointed as new showrunner two months later — but creator (and book author) Neil Gaiman told reporters that viewers shouldn t notice any difference in quality between the two seasons. I was on the show before Bryan and Michael came on as showrunners; I got to watch that being made, he said. I got to watch them leave and Jesse come on and take season 2. From my perspective, the thing that has been made as season 2 feels like the same show that we had for season 1. Part of that is because we have amazing actors, part of that is because a lot of the people didn t change.(Photo by Starz) It still looks and feels like American Gods, he continued. It s definitely taken a while to get season 2 out, but it takes a while to get good things made and I think we d all rather have it good than have it quicker — although we d rather have it quicker too. The Crawleys Turn Volume to 11 on Downton Abbey Movie(Photo by Nick Briggs/Carnival Film & Television Limited 2014)The Downton Abbey movie hits theaters on September 20, and its stars are still keeping as frustratingly tight-lipped as ever when it comes to discussing the upcoming film. I don t even know what I can tell you, star Laura Carmichael (a.k.a. Edith Crawley) told USA Today and a small group of reporters on Tuesday. What can I remember has been released? There’s some new exciting people, which was dreamy. New cast members which you’ll love and enjoy. Unfortunately, that s just about all Carmichael, who next stars in Starz s drama The Spanish Princess, could say about what happens, though she did reveal that she thinks everyone will be pleased that we’ve upped the ante. Turned the volume up. Whether it s the end of the road for the Crawleys and their staff is something only creator Julian Fellowes can address. I can’t speak for other people, Carmichael said. But I can say we all had a dreamy time, it was lush. SpongeBob SquarePants Turns 20SpongeBob SquarePants celebrates its 20th birthday this summer. Like other beloved animated series (including The Simpsons and Family Guy), the series has managed to remain in the zeitgeist for multiple decades (though SpongeBob is a show both kids and adults can enjoy together). How, exactly, has the Nickelodeon series managed to remain so topical? Man, that’s the million-dollar question, said Bill Fagerbakke, who voices SpongeBob s pal Patrick Star. I don’t know if there’s a formula. There’s something mercurial and enigmatic about it. And I’ve come to think it’s a magical combination of shapes, colors, and sounds. We don’t know! Rodger Bumpass, who voices SpongeBob s frenemy Squidward, likens the series to Looney Tunes. They’re both short cartoons, but different ages of people and viewers get different things. Little kids get something out of it cause it’s colorful and it’s animated. And then the little older guys get a little bit more stuff out of it, and adults get something out of it too. And funny is funny, so I think that’s one of the reasons it has struck a chord, Bumpass said.SpongeBob himself, a.k.a. Tom Kenny, thinks some of the magic of his character comes from the fact that everyone wants to root for him and he s avoided any type of controversy. SpongeBob really does seem to have this charmed life and this magic power where people, you know, they didn’t just like it a little bit. They started to really like it and love it, and it found its way into the fabric of people’s lives, and it kept finding new life in new ways like memes and things like that, Kenny said. And even on the couple of occasions where there’s been something a little controversial that’s happened, SpongeBob still winds up winning. SpongeBob still winds up on top. For example, the latest Super Bowl halftime show was a tad controversial, but people didn t take any umbrage with the fact that SpongeBob made an appearance.Said Kenny, People get mad at the NFL. They don’t get mad at SpongeBob. You know what I mean? They don’t hate on SpongeBob. They hate on Maroon 5. The Rook EP Explains Why British People Are Good at Spy DramasThe new Starz drama The Rook, based on the book of the same name by Daniel O Malley, is both a tense British spy thriller and a supernatural drama. When Myfanwy Thomas (Emma Greenwell) wakes up in the rain next to London s Millennium Bridge, she can t remember who she is or how she wound up next to a pile of dead bodies. But she soon learns that she s a high-ranking official in the Checquy, a secret organization involving people with paranormal abilities. The London-set series was run by two American showrunners, Lisa Zerling and Karyn Usher, though it stars a mostly British cast (save for Olivia Munn). British executive producer Stephen Garrett said the series works because his people are experts in the spy genre. The Rook denotes [Myfanwy s] rank in the organization, and clearly there are bishops and queens who are higher than her, but I think what drew us all to this is it s a spy show with supernatural elements. The great thing about spy shows, and why the British are good at them, [is because] we re naturally duplicitous, we re very good at lying, and we love secrets, Garrett joked. So if you re a spy you can t tell your friends or your loved ones what it is you do, and I think if you have supernatural powers, you can t tell your loved ones what it is you have. So you have secrets to the power of 10, and that s just a heady mix for a great drama. Maybe Don t Watch the Racy Now Apocalypse With Your Parents(Photo by Starz)Gregg Araki s new Starz drama, Now Apocalypse, is a sex-infused, surreal adventure about stoner twentysomethings navigating the dating world and Los Angeles in general. Ulysses (Avan Jogia) also starts having premonitory dreams, causing him to wonder if there s a dark conspiracy going on around him or he s just smoking too much weed. There s a lot of nudity and sex, but star Jogia told reporters that he thinks the show will attract a multi-generational audience. As he pointed out, the older generation, quote unquote, grew up during sex lib. But if you re thinking about watching the show with your parents, whether that s a good decision or not really depends on how sexually liberated you and your parents are. The show sounds very punk rock, and attuned toward sex and sexuality, Araki said. We have BDSM, and we have water sports, and we have a sex club and a sex orgy, and it s like Whoa, that show sounds nuts. But when I watched it for the first time, there s a real sweetness to it. And this is a testament to the best cast in the whole universe — they really imbue these characters with such vanity and such authenticity. The whole show is grounded in these characters. They re super-sweet and super lovable. It s really about these characters and what they re going through. It s a lot, he admitted — especially in a show he described as Girls, Sex and the City meets Twin Peaks with an alien — but he’s not including those moments for shock value. I m not interested in titillation or making porn, Araki said. It s really about those moments of character truth, and I think that s the strongest thing about the show. Dennis Quaid Heads to NetflixNetflix has added Dennis Quaid to its ever-expanding roster of talent.
