George and his wife, Margaret (Diane Lane), grieve for their son’s accidental death by helping his widow, Lorna (Kayli Carter), with their new grandson– but the solution is temporary. Lorna decides to remarry and takes George and Margaret’s grandson – their last remaining link to their son – away without warning. Too often, they re not great, but sometimes they re good and they just don t fit. It s hard to do; it s hard to write a great screenplay. As I started reading, I was drawn into it. I didn t know where it was going or where it was going to go. It got worse and worse in the best sense. There was a dread that started to happen, and there was an authenticness about it. A love story was emerging even against this kind of journey that was happening. These two people who had history together,who loved each other, and you saw them completely not together, so to speak, but what kept them together was love. We have a beautiful screenplay and really that s what got me to say yes.Speaking of that central relationship, how did you and Diane Lane create that rapport?Costner: The idea of working with Diane, that s always going to be a yes, but not in the wrong situation. When I work with her or anybody, I want it to succeed wildly. I want it to feel to an audience that, “Wow, that was fresh. That was different. I didn t see that coming.” You still want to feel like something surprised you. That s what I look forward to. They re not just jobs or decisions to be a way from home. How did you decide what went into that performance and balance the relationship dynamics?Women that have strong wills are not new to this century or this decade. Women have been leading men in certain ways to places because they feel morally, ethically, right, and drag their men sometimes in these situations that are over their head. Why does the man go? Because in the end, he loves her and wants to protect her from herself. And in the end, he can t.Speaking of strong women, your character also faces off against Lesley Manville’s strong-willed matriarch. What was that experience like?She’s kind of like Bette Davis, just so formidable. That family you just knew was so bad. They were just people on the fringe and we [the characters] got dragged into it. I think what s so cool about the movie is I could feel it coming. The audience could feel it coming. The only one that couldn t feel it coming was Diane, my wife. How did you bring that sense of mid-century midwestern life into your performance?Costner: The actor has a few tools at their disposal. Their voice, how are they going to play it? Their walk, how are they gonna walk it? Their hair, how are they going to look? How are they going to exist in that particular era? What s going to inform without shouting out.The West and Midwest feature so prominently throughout your career. Is there something about these regions that appeals to you? Costner: Maybe you ll think about it this way or won t, but how I do is that they lend themselves to people having to solve their problems on their own. As people extended out, they ended up solving their own problems with a level of violence. The violence was random, and those who could take advantage of people did. Some people find a lot of drama in the courtroom and a lot of drama in the police precinct, and I find a lot of drama in the great open spaces where sometimes it s you and somebody else and you re wondering what it is they want from you. 9.96.4 0月喜迎(Photo by © A24)2019 has been such a strong year for wide-release horror films that the upcoming Black Christmas remake could receive a 0% Tomatometer score and the average for the 23 horror films released in 2019 would still be a Fresh 60%. This may not seem all that important, but this is big news for horror fans. Why? Because in the modern era of horror (which we’ll define as from 1980 forward), there hasn’t been a year with a Fresh overall Tomatometer score.This Fresh average shouldn’t come as a surprise to those paying attention to the genre this year – Certified Fresh hits like Us, Crawl, Ready or Not, and Midsommar have won over critics and audiences alike. Even remakes/adaptations are over-performing critically as Child’s Play (63%) and Pet Sematary (57%) are Fresh and very close to it, respectively, when historically horror remakes average a Rotten 44% Tomatometer average.In honor of this Fresh year of theatrically released horror, we pulled the Tomatometer data on the 644 horror movies that received wide releases (defined here as 600+ theaters) in the United States since 1980. We wanted to know how the preceding 40 years of horror films matched up against 2019, and if any year had a higher Tomatometer average.Quick Note: We chose 1980-2019 because there is greater consistency in Tomatometer data than in earlier years. The 1970s were the bomb though.THE OVERALL AVERAGE FOR HORROR FILMS RELEASED SINCE 1980 IS A ROTTEN 43.8%(Photo by Lions Gate / Everett Collection )The overall Tomatometer average for the 644 horror movies that received wide theatrical releases since 1980 is a Rotten 43.8%, and 438 of those movies (or 68%) have scores below 60%. The Rotten far outweigh the Fresh, and for every Green Room, The Descent, The Thing, and Scream 2 , there are movies like Jaws: The Revenge, House of the Dead, I, Frankenstein, Godsend, The Roommate, and Dream House bringing down their average.Another interesting fact (for data nerds and horror movie lovers who are also data nerds) is that since 1990, only five years have had more Fresh horror films than Rotten: 1982 (7 4), 1983 (8 7), 1987 (10 7), 2013 (7 6), and 2019 (12 10). This data makes 2019’s Fresh score even more impressive.On a side note, the years 1997-1999 have a seriously high number of Rotten horror movies that we at RT actually love. Between Anaconda, Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, The Faculty, Idle Hands, Blade, Deep Rising, The Relic, The Mummy, Lake Placid, and the king of all Rotten horror movies, Event Horizon (you can read more about Event Horizon as well as Blade in our book Rotten Movies We Love), the years are stacked with Rotten movies that are pretty awesome.THE BEST DECADE FOR HORROR IS THE 1980s. No Surprise there. (Photo by New Line Cinema)Despite having no single year with a Fresh Tomatometer score, the 1980s have the highest overall average with a groovy 52.5%. Buoyed by A Nightmare on Elm Street, Near Dark, The Fly, The Thing, and Fright Night, the 1980s slaughtered the 1990s (43.6%), 2000s (32.2%), and the 2010s (47.1%).Six of the top 10 years in our data set come from the 1980s, and 1987 came close to being Fresh, but the 0%-rated Jaws: The Revenge and the 9% House 2 kept it at a Rotten 57%. A big reason for the 1980s being the highest-rated decade is that it has only one year in the bottom 10 Rottenest years on the list (1989, with a Tomatometer average of 34.4%).2006 HAS THE LOWEST TOMATOMETER AVERAGE, AND THE MOST ROTTEN DECADE IS THE 2000s(Photo by © Warner Bros. )The worst year in our entire data set is 2006, which currently has a Rotten 31.1% average. The distinction is dubious, but at least 2006 kept it interesting with movies like Pan’s Labyrinth, The Descent, Slither, Hostel, Snakes on a Plane, The Hill Have Eyes, and The Wicker Man remake, an amazingly bonkers movie that features Nicolas Cage running all over the place while wearing a bear suit. Also, the first Black Christmas remake was released in 2006, and with a 14% Tomatometer score, the less said, the better.The 2000s as a whole weren’t much better, as the decade averaged a 32% Tomatometer score. Four of the five lowest Tomatometer years in the data set are from the 2000s, and only 33 of the 189 theatrically released movies in that decade have a Fresh Tomatometer score. The numbers may look bad, but on a positive note, the 2000s are responsible for bona fide classics like Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later, The Mist, and Zombieland. Plus, movies like Jennifer’s Body, 28 Weeks Later, 30 Days of Night, Constantine, Frailty, Eight Legged Freaks, and The Happening (it’s awesome, get over yourself), are starting to gain their due popularity.Random Tomatometer Fact: Imogen Poots, the star of the upcoming Black Christmas remake, made her horror debut in 2007, appearing in the Fresh 28 Weeks Later (the opening scene is awesome). Since then, she’s crushed it the underrated Fright Night remake and in Green Room, which is one of the best-reviewed horror films of recent memory.2019 HAS THE HIGHEST TOMATOMETER AVERAGE FOR HORROR MOVIES OF ANY YEAR SINCE 1980, AND IS THE ONLY FRESH YEAR,WITH A 63% AVERAGEWhat makes 2019 the only Fresh year in our data set might surprise you. While movies like Us, Doctor Sleep, The Lighthouse, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark helped greatly, it’s the remakes, prequels, sequels, and adaptations that greatly contributed to the overall Freshness. 2019 has been a lot of fun because of movies like Annabelle Comes Home, a sequel to a prequel (Annabelle: Creation) of a prequel (Annabelle), which has a Fresh 64% Tomatometer score. Normally, a horror movie so far removed from the original is almost always Rotten. Toss in the Certified Fresh Crawl (82%), a movie about rampaging alligators, and 3 From Hell, Rob Zombie s 50%-rated sequel to The Devil’s Rejects, and you have movies that are over-performing critically when compared the likes of Lake Placid (46%), Primeval (18%), 31 (47%), and Lords of Salem (46%) from past years.The 25% Tomatometer-rated Countdown, a movie about a ‘killer’ phone app, has the lowest score of any wide-release horror movie in 2019. Typically, a 25% score isn’t reason to celebrate – but when compared to the Rottenest horror movie of each year in our data set, it’s the least Rotten (the closest is 1984’s 23%-rated C.H.U.D.). In fact, the 10 Rotten horror movies released in 2019 have a 46.3% average, which is the highest average for the Rotten films of all the years in our data set. 2019 has the best of the worst, and that’s why it’s Fresh.What is your favorite year for horror? All good things must come to an end, and with the season 6B premiere of Vikings hitting our television screens on December 30, the end of History’s beloved series is near.The first 10 episodes of the season served as the perfect setup to its final, killing off a few major characters — we still haven’t quite recovered from Lagertha’s (Katheryn Winnick) unceremonious stabbing — and setting in motion an epic conclusion for Ragnar’s sons, now seven years in the making.But before Vikings sets sail to Valhalla for good, we’ve got several lingering questions we’d like to see answered, especially considering the midseason finale that left our central hero’s fate in the balance.Is Bjorn Dead or Alive After Getting Stabbed by Ivar?(Photo by Jonathan Hession/History)No surprise here: The biggest burning question going into this final stretch of episodes is whether or not Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) actually died by Ivar’s sword, as shown in a surreal and disorienting battle at the tail end of 6A. Is he gravely wounded? Was it all a dream? Or is this actually the last that we’ll see of Ludwig’s formidable warrior?Speaking with Rotten Tomatoes, creator Michael Hirst remained characteristically tight-lipped about what’s to come, but he did tease that dead or alive, Bjorn will continue to be a presence this season. Just as Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) continues to be a name on everyone’s lips, his first son also casts a long shadow in life and in death.“These are presences in the show right to the end, powerful presences, part of the pantheon and sort of mythic figures in the Vikings world,” Hirst said. “So they’re still alive in many different ways.”And for what it’s worth, Ludwig, without giving away his character’s fate, told us that there’s no other way he’d rather the show end  — what Hirst has crafted is exactly what it should be.“I’m really objective, and I hate watching myself because I’m always really hard on myself, but I will say that I do love this show as a fan, I really do, and as somebody who’s incredibly critical of everything I do, I believe that this show is ending exactly how it should,” Ludwig said. “The fans are going to be really happy with the ending.”Scanning the latest trailers for the final season, Ludwig’s Bjorn is shown to be bedridden and surrounded by loved ones and viking leaders, which likely dispels any online theories that the battle sequence that ended in Ivar stabbing his brother was all a surreal dream. So perhaps he’s wounded and will live to fight another day? There are also glimpses of Bjorn riding horseback, and the season’s promotional poster itself features a grizzled, sword-wielding Bjorn, all indicating that we haven’t seen the last of him in battle yet. (Thank the gods!) Anything less would leave us feeling a bit cheated, considering the pedigree of loss and hardship Bjorn has weathered along the way, most recently the death of Lagertha, his unborn child, and Hali, his son by Torvi, and the loss of the elected crown.What Is Ivar’s Endgame With Oleg, Igor, and Hvitserk?(Photo by Bernard Walsh/History)We all know at this point just how masterful a strategist Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen) truly is. And now that it appears the Rus army wrapped season 6A with a clear upper hand over Bjorn and King Harald (Peter Franzén), one must wonder what will come of his alliance with the young King Igor (Oran Glynn O Donovan), the rightful heir to Kievian Rus, and his manipulative, calculating uncle, Prince Oleg (Danila Kozlovsky). Of course, Ivar has had his eyes on the throne for years and is currently promised to inherit the crown as Norway’s King. But what if Oleg betrays that promise? Audiences have been privy to the mounting gameplay Ivar’s been aligning against Oleg should a coup be deemed necessary, so we’re eager to see how their relationship develops in these last 10 episodes. Where Oleg’s wife, Katia (Alicia Agneson) — whom Ivar believes is his dead wife resurrected — fits into that scheme also remains to be seen. But for now, as indicated in the finale earlier this year, the mood is joyous, celebratory, and drunk.As for Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø), he and Ivar have always had a, let’s say, contentious relationship. The fact that they’re back in arms together after Hvitserk accidentally killed Lagertha, was spared execution, and under Bjorn’s orders was banished from Kattegat — and, let’s not forget, after Ivar killed Thora (Eve Connolly) at the end of season 5 — definitely reeks of trouble. Too much baggage, resentments, and habits of fratricide sit between them and a happy, brotherly ending. How it all plays out, though — will Hvitserk make good on his supposed fate to kill Ivar? — is at this point anyone’s guess.King Harald Is Assumed Dead on the Battlefield — What Will Become of Norway?(Photo by Jonathan Hession/History)If there was ever a moment to prove that he deserved to be crowned King of Norway, the battle with the Rus at the end of 6A was it. Unfortunately, King Harald wasn’t quite up to snuff. (Are we all that surprised?) When news arrives of the approaching Rus army, Harald is unable to bring Norway’s kingdoms together for battle and is ultimately left shorthanded and unprepared. Throw into the mix the fact that he raped Bjorn’s wife, Ingrid, before that battle, we can’t say we were all that sad to see him bleeding out on the field. But never speak too soon: We never got any confirmation that he died after Erik the Red (Eric Johnson) left him for such and took his crown, so his future on the series is still unclear. And speaking of Erik, we can’t help but wonder what he’s going to do with the crown, leaving Harald for dead and with the knowledge that Bjorn is gravely injured, it appears as if Norway may need to find a new head to rest its power upon.Will Torvi and Ubbe Finally Make it to the Golden Land?(Photo by Jonathan Hession/History)We also expect these final episodes to conclude the years-long setup of how the vikings will make their way from Iceland to the so-called Golden Land — widely anticipated to be North America. On that quest by way of Iceland is Torvi (Georgia Hirst) and Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith), and at the end of season 6A, they had invited the help of Othere (Ray Stevenson), a mysterious wanderer who’s claimed to have charted the western seas and in his travels came up this “golden land.” Soon after his appearance in Iceland, it’s learned that he is actually a converted Anglo-Saxon monk named Athelstan, and he is hoarding a violent past. After killing a viking and taking his name, he left the missionary life behind and is now infiltrating the voyage efforts of Torvi and Ubbe. As it stands, his intention is unclear, and given his history, we’re not immediately on board to trust him. But if he can lead our heroes to the Golden Land, then perhaps it’s worth it to keep him around. Plus, if anyone has the answers behind Floki’s true fate, it may well be Othere.Another note of interest: Let’s loop back to Erik the Red. In real-world vikings history, Leif Erikson was the first viking to set foot on North America and went on to settle Newfoundland. Erik the Red, as it so happens, is Leif Erikson’s father. So were Hirst to stick closely to the factual history of the matter (which, of course, is not always the case in Vikings), we may also see Erik somehow involving himself in the Iceland camp’s voyage west.What Characters From Vikings’ Past Will Return Before the Finale?(Photo by Jonathan Hession/History)Speaking of Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård), wouldn’t it be nice to get some definitive closure on our favorite ship builder before Vikings comes to an end? It also gets us thinking about who else may show up between now and the series finale. The first half of season 6 has largely zeroed in on Iceland, Scandinavia, and Rus; is a trip back to Wessex and our friend King Alfred (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) in store? Rollo (Clive Standen) is already known for making an unannounced grand return to the series; should we be holding our breath for him? And as Hirst says himself, these characters never really die. Could Ragnar and Lagertha appear in flashbacks or dreams? Is there room for a full-on cast reunion onscreen? We hope so!Whoever comes back for this last round of action, Ludwig assures us that it’s happening: “Some of the fan-favorites may or may not make a return, and I’m really, really looking forward to the response,” he said. “I don’t think there’s a better way that it could’ve ended.”And about that ending, Hirst said that we should prepare to say goodbye to more major players than just Lagertha: “I had to kill off some of the characters I’ve loved the most, and that was never easy,” he said.But he promises that every shocking twist in the remainder of this journey is worth it and all feed the larger story he’s long had in the pipeline.“What I can say is that these episodes are literally full of surprises and unexpected visitations or appearances, and the thing to expect is the unexpected,” he said. “I’m not going to go into detail, but the show is rounded off in many respects, and I hope in a very satisfactory way. That was what I needed to do.”In the end, what if you’re not happy with the result? Well, Hirst rests easy with the knowledge that he is the only one to blame.“You know there are certain shows, and you probably could name them — very good shows that had very poor endings,” he teased. “And I suspect that that was because there were a number of people involved in the decision about how they should end and how they should be written, and people would disagree. But in this case, it was just me, and the only person I could argue with was myself. So I felt that if I was able to conclude these different storylines — there are three different storylines in these 10 episodes — if I could conclude them satisfactorily and with justice, then I was fairly sure that the audience would find the ending satisfying, too, because these are characters I love, these are characters I lived with for seven years. Surprising, thrilling, hilarious – Parasite is not eligible for major film categories, and here is where it will get its justice. Unless, that is, the epicness of The Irishman or technical wizardry of 1917 dazzle the HFPA enough to cause an upset.Best Screenplay Motion PictureWho will win?Marriage Story (2019) 94%Who should win? Hard to argue with Noah Baumbach s deeply personal, beautifully observed, and very, well, wordy divorce tale taking home the prize. But we think Bong Joon-ho s bracing, inventive, and richly allegorical Parasite would be the (slightly) more deserving choice.
Though Unhinged and The New Mutants ultimately beat it into theaters, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has been held up for months as the film that was going to help bring moviegoers back to the big screen. The numbers are certainly on the rise with the tentpole flick finally released, but do they indicate a genuine resurgence in theater-going? Up until some releases from August 14 on, the big winners of the summer were horror releases from IFC Midnight: The Wretched (.81 million total), The Rental (.56 million), and Relic (.04 million); the studio had only had seven films gross over a million dollars between 2017 and 2019. Beyond that, retro releases like Jurassic Park (,386,600), The Empire Strikes Back (,015,000), The Goonies (5,000), Jaws (8,300), and Ghostbusters (5,000) were the big winners.On August 14, Paramount released their once-planned May release of The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, but only in Canada where it has grossed over .4 million to date. A week later Solstice Studios laid claim to the first wide release since March 13 when it unleashed Unhinged into theaters, earning million in 1,823 theaters for a ,194 per-theater-average. The week after, it was finally time for The New Mutants, which grossed .03 million in 2,412 theaters for a ,917 per-theater-average. This weekend it was Tenet’s turn.(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon / © Warner Bros. / Courtesy Everett Collection)Evaluating just how these recent releases have been doing with many theaters still not operating and responsible social distancing limiting the amount of patrons in any auditorium may be a fool’s game. But numbers can be read through history and, until further trends reveal themselves, the way we have been looking at them is through an estimation of how they may have done in a normal year. That led to the evaluation that the current box office leaders have been doing somewhere around 2.5-to-3-times less than they may have the previous year. Looking ahead to Tenet this weekend, we looked back at Nolan’s most recent non-Batman/non-DiCaprio offerings and saw that Interstellar opened to .5 million (in November 2014) and Dunkirk started with .5 million (in July of 2017). So somewhere in the high teens, up to around million, felt like a confident bet with realistic expectations heading into the weekend. And that is where the movie landed, with an estimated .2 million over the four-day holiday weekend, as well as from scattered advance screenings going back to Monday.Labeling this as either good or disappointing is still premature. After all, Tenet pretty much has theaters all to itself through the month of September until Warner Bros. challenges itself directly with Wonder Woman 1984 on October 2. One thing that does seem to be true is that – whatever the size of the audience may be – word-of-mouth appears to continue to remain a factor in these films staying power. Unhinged has fallen into a similar pattern as other adult-themed late-August releases such as 2002’s Undisputed (.54 million opening / .76 million total), 2012’s Hit Run (.52 million / .74 million), and 2013’s vehicular thriller Getaway (.5 million / .5 million). Unhinged’s estimated .67 million this weekend brings its total to .3 million after 17 days.The New Mutants, on other hand, dropped 59% from its million start, bringing its 10-day total to .6 million (.2 million with the holiday). That may be more than August 2018’s mutant-esque Fox offering, The Darkest Minds, had at this point (.98 million after a .84 million start), but let’s also look back at six August releases from 2011-16 that opened between .5-.5 million for some further comparison: Mechanic: Resurrection, You’re Next, Our Idiot Brother, Jobs, Ricki and the Flash, and Florence Foster Jenkins had each earned between million and .64 million after 10 days. In August 2017, another long-delayed and ultimately critically-reviled adaptation, The Dark Tower, opened to .1 million, dropped 59.2% in its second weekend, and had .2 million after 10 days. Divide that by three and you have .4 million, just shy of The New Mutants’ current total. That suggests Mutants could be headed for a final theatrical tally between .9 million and .3 million. It’s a single example, but maybe there is something to the rule of three in measuring current box office totals.So where does that leave Tenet? Dunkirk and Interstellar finished with near-identical grosses of 8,045,546 and 8,020,017, and no one is expecting those kind of heights. With theaters more widely opened overseas than in the U.S., Tenet has grossed over 0 million worldwide so far. Using our crude formula, Tenet would have grossed somewhere between .5 million and .6 million in a normal time, which would have made it just the fourth film to open higher than million in the month of September, a feat achieved just the past three years with the It films and 2018’s The Nun. Living directly with the numbers we have now, only one film this century has gone on to gross over 0 million when starting with less than million, and that was 20 years ago with Remember the Titans. The rest of the historical September releases that opened between million and million have an average final gross of million. It will be interesting to see whether Tenet will face smaller week-on-week drops given the lack of competition, or whether the numbers will drop off as might normally be expected, especially given that Tenet is also the second-lowest rated Nolan film on the Tomatometer at 74%. (Interstellar stands at 72%.)On This Weekend s Dates In Box Office History (Photo by © Warner Bros. )With so little action in our current-day box office, we re casting our eyes back this week.September 4: In a bit of symmetry, Christopher Nolan’s Inception crossed 5 million with .69 million on its 51st day of release 10 years ago.September 5: In 2016, Suicide Squad grossed .77 million on its 32nd day of release to cross 0 million. In 2011, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows made 8,509 on day 53 of its release. It took 74 days for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen to make it to 0 million, which it did on this day in 2009 pulling in 3,311.September 6: Night Shyamalan’s Signs grossed .29 million to pass the 0 million mark on its 36th in 2002. That same day, Sam Mendes’ Road to Perdition made 0,349 to get over the 0 million hump on its 57th day. It only took 24 days for Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 to do it with .74 million on this date in 2009. This has also been a good date for Universal sequels. In 2003, American Wedding made 4,145 to pass 0 million on its 37th day; then in 2008, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor made 7,455 to pass 0 million, also on its 37th day. Of course, that was nothing compared to Disney’s The Lion King redux making 1,156 to pass 5 million on its 50th day in theaters just last year.September 7: In 2012, another Universal sequel, The Bourne Legacy, grossed .13 million to cross 0 million on day 29 of its theatrical run. That was a lot faster than Adam Sandler’s You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, which finally crossed the 0 million mark with ,114 on its 94th day of release in 2008.What Should Have Been This Weekend(Photo by © Paramount)At one time, this weekend belonged to A Quiet Place Part II, one of the first films moved out of its original opening slots back in March. It is now slated to open on April 23, 2021. The original Labor Day weekend slate – before any of the COVID-19 upheavals – was meant to include Paul W.S. Anderson’s Monster Hunter, with Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa. Now it will open alongside John Krasinski’s sequel on the same date next year. Peter Jackson’s documentary, The Beatles: Get Back, about the band’s rooftop concert, will now open on August 27 of next year.On the Vine: Broken Hearts Heading to Theaters OnlyThe widest release in theaters next week will be the romantic comedy, The Broken Hearts Gallery, starring Geraldine Viswanathan, who you may know from from Blockers and Bad Education. Dozens of individuals involved in a nationwide conspiracy that facilitated cheating on college entrance exams and the admission of students to elite universities as purported athletic recruits were arrested by federal agents in multiple states and charged in documents unsealed on March 12, 2019, in federal court in Boston, the DOJ said. Athletic coaches from Yale, Stanford, USC, Wake Forest and Georgetown, among others, are implicated, as well as parents and exam administrators. The lead defendant, William Rick Singer, pled guilty on March 12 in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts to counts of racketeering, money laundering, conspiracy to defraud the U.S., and obstruction of justice and will be sentenced on June 19.The government charged Huffman, Loughlin, and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, with conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud. Loughlin surrendered to federal authorities and posted a million bond on Wednesday, CNN reported. The Giannullis agreed to a pay bribes totaling 0,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team — despite the fact that they did not participate in crew—thereby facilitating their admission to USC, according to the complaint.Huffman, who was arrested at her home, posted a 0,000 bond and surrendered her passport to the FBI. She and her husband, Shameless star William H. Macy, to fake charity Key Worldwide Foundation allegedly to get her daughter a higher score on the SATs. The criminal complaint also includes transcriptions of phone calls between Singer, Huffman, and her spouse setting up the SAT cheating. I mean, after the movie, I didn t hear any comments about the visual effects, but during the shooting, I do remember the first time each one of them saw the rig. They sort of raised their eyebrows like, Wow, look at that. It had all the cables and the monitors read. It was kind of a thing. But once that initial two-minute surprise had happened, then it was seamless. They completely forgot about the cameras. I do remember Pacino in particular. There s a scene where he is talking with Tony Pro (Stephen Graham) in jail, and they re sitting on a bench, and he s eating his ice cream. Tony Pro comes in for his money, and we shot that with three angles simultaneously. So each one of them has to be a three-headed monster, so it was nine cameras shooting the scene at the same time. I do remember Pacino was like, Whoa, what s all this? It was quite a thing. But, yes, as I said, initially he was surprised, but then totally forgot about it. We all hid behind our gear and made ourselves invisible.Helman: The other thing that you have to think about is that this is a brand new thing. This is the first time that we ve ever tried something like this. So from here on, things are going to get better. So the rigs are going to get very, very small. Technology is going to get faster. In visual effects, and I m sure it s everywhere in this business, we kind of stand on each other s shoulders to get to where we need to be. Pictures)Christopher Nolan’s movies are always highly anticipated and mysterious affairs, and Tenet, the director’s 11th film, is no exception. In fact, it might actually be the Nolan movie that audiences know the least about, especially since the future of the entire film industry is currently unclear due to the coronavirus pandemic.Still, with two trailers and a release date that has shifted a few times, we know a little bit about Nolan’s Dunkirk follow-up. Here’s the scoop on Tenet. [Updated on 7/27/20.]It s Another Nolan Original(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Paramount Pictures)Christopher Nolan is one of the only filmmakers whose name alone is enough to make a movie an event without it needing to be a reboot, adaptation, or part of a big cinematic universe. Tenet is a wholly original story, written and directed by Nolan. What’s the story about, though? Harder to say.The most bare-bones synopsis is that Tenet will involve a secret agent (John David Washington) on a mission to stop a potentially catastrophic World War III. Sounds normal enough, but the two trailers reveal that this isn’t your everyday spy thriller. Instead, Tenet seems as though it will once more explore Nolan’s fascination with time, as seen in Inception, Interstellar, and, to an extent, even Dunkirk. Cars crash in reverse, and there are bullet holes in walls before the gunmen have even opened fire. How this is possible, and what this all means, is still unclear.  There Are Two TrailersHobbs Shaw audiences were the first to see a glimpse of Tenet back in August of 2019, when Warner Bros. attached a 40-second teaser ahead of the film. The first proper trailer dropped in December, before the pandemic really started. In an online event tied to the video game Fortnite on May 21, Warner Bros. then premiered a second trailer that revealed new scenes from the film and more dialogue than the first one.Neither trailer goes too deeply into specifics, but it appears that Washington is a new recruit into some sort of agency that’s able to harness a mysterious power to reverse time, an ability known as inversion. Together with the help of some allies, he’ll attempt to prevent disaster, presumably one caused by a Russian national who can communicate with the future. Washington’s character appears to learn how to do some form of this too, as we see him catch bullets with his gun and witness a car crash undoing itself. Plus, there are more traditional set pieces as well, like a jumbo jet crashing through a building. Washington confirmed in a brief Q A following the Fortnite premiere that the latter was not a product of CGI, and knowing Nolan, the rest of the effects in the film are likely as practical i.e. real as possible.The Cast Is Impressive And Unexpected(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)In addition to Washington, the son of actor Denzel Washington who received acclaim for his starring role in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, Nolan has cast a number of talented actors. Robert Pattinson, the future Batman himself, is one of the more notable members of the cast, as is Michael Caine, one of Nolan’s go-to actors.Kenneth Branagh, Age of Ultron’s Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Yesterday’s Himesh Patel, and Widows’ Elizabeth Debicki also appear in the cast. There are also a few actors foreign audiences might recognize. About a month before its originally scheduled July 17 theatrical release, Warner Bros. finally caved and shifted it to August 12. Then, on July 20, it was pulled from theaters entirely, with no indication when it would premiere. Finally, on July 27, it was announced that Tenet would first open in two dozen markets worldwide including the UK, South Korea, and France on Wednesday, August 26, before expanding into more markets over the next few days, and it would ultimately open in the US on Thursday, September 3, ahead of the Labor Day weekend.Christopher Nolan has personally pushed against moving the movie’s release date back, according to reports. Nolan is a major proponent of the traditional theatrical experience, and as one of the few directors whose name alone is big enough to get moviegoers to buy a ticket, he might be able to convince audiences to get back into theaters — assuming theaters are open. Although various states have begun to reopen parts of their economy despite the continued spread of the coronavirus, major movie theater chains haven’t followed suit.It’s unclear what the state of the COVID-19 pandemic will look like at the end of August, and it’s unclear if audiences will feel safe going to the movies, regardless of Nolan’s allure. For now, Tenet is no longer the first big release that plans to open in theaters this summer season, but it is by far the biggest, and it may still serve as a barometer for major studio releases in the near future.Don t Expect It to Premiere on Streaming or VODAs mentioned, Nolan is a huge champion of the theatergoing experience, so it seems highly unlikely that he’d allow for Tenet to premiere in a format that would allow audiences to watch it on their phones for the first time rather than in glorious IMAX. In addition, it’s unlikely that Warner Bros. would make nearly as much money from a VOD release as it would make with a theatrical release in normal circumstances. Further complicating this is the somewhat inside-baseball fact that Nolan’s contract stipulates that he makes 20% of the film’s first dollar gross, so he stands to make much more from a big theatrical release than something smaller.The big question about Tenet, then — more than any mystery about the plot — is what’s going to happen when it premieres, and what will the circumstances of that premiere look like?
