His satirical take on the prototypical nuclear American family became a successful television series in the 1960s, spawning an animated series in the 1970s, a pair of cult classic films in the early 1990s, and yet another animated series shortly thereafter. And that doesn t even cover the video games, the stage musical, and various

Ambitiously violent and larger-than-life, it certainly ranks as one of Netflix’s best fantasy series and will give you all the knowledge you need to appreciate this animated vision of what came before.

(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)The numbers look good for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which pulled in a record-breaking million across the four-day weekend. They look even better for theaters and the industry. The only people  probably looking at the numbers with some grief are the folks at Paramount, which recently pushed both Jackass Forever and Top Gun: Maverick off this year’s schedule into 2022. That could still turn out to be a good idea and ultimately be looked back upon as just a slight delay for some bigger grosses, assuming the pandemic numbers head in the right direction again. But as the box office numbers have been showing for the past month now, people are still going to the movies – especially when there are no streaming options. But even more important for the industry is the extrapolation of these numbers, which are starting to feel more like pre-2020 instead of 2021. And not to bury the lede, but the box office just had its biggest Labor Day weekend ever. Not bad.King of the Crop: Shang-Chi Breaks Multiple Records, But Can It Be the first 2021 Movie to Hit 0 Million?Only four other times in history has the four-day Labor Day holiday grossed over 0 million, led by the likes of Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Guardians of the Galaxy, and The Possession (two of those movies did not even debut in that weekend). The films in this Labor Day weekend s top 10 grossed over 1 million, besting the 4 million over the 2007 holiday which was led by Zombie s Halloween.Last week when we measured the success of Candyman, it was the Thursday-preview numbers that served as our guide. This week, we note that Shang-Chi had the second-best preview numbers during the pandemic, with .8 million. That is more than F9’s .1 million and less than Black Widow’s .2 million, which we should remember was made before the film hit Premier Access on Disney+ on Friday. Shang-Chi had no Premier Access on Friday, nor Saturday, Sunday, Monday, nor going forward. The seven past live-action PG-13 films which have grossed between .3 million and .3 million in Thursday previews include 2014’s Godzilla, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Transformers: Age of Extinction, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. They averaged a three-day opening weekend of .5 million, with the second Fantastic Beasts film posting the weakest eventual three-day haul with .1 million. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings posted an estimate of .5 million over just the three days. That may be slightly below the average of those other films, which all had more recognizable name brands than Shang-Chi, but it is also the biggest Labor Day opening ever, the second-best opening of the pandemic, and the third-best September weekend ever behind both of the It films.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Those are also the only films to ever open in September and gross over 0 million. That is a number the box office has yet to crack since Bad Boys for Life did it before shutdown in 2020. Black Widow opened to million and could not do it – but it was also available for a price at home. F9 opened to million and came up shy of 5 million, despite being a theatrical exclusive. Only five films have ever grossed million or more in their first five days and failed to gross 0 million: Fifty Shades of Grey, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Simpsons Movie, and The Day After Tomorrow are four of them; the fifth is this summer’s Black Widow (i.e. pandemic + home availability = some will avoid the risk).Shang-Chi has very little competition over the next few weeks before Venom: Let There Be Carnage releases in its new just-announced date – Sony was clearly encouraged by this weekend s numbers – and No Time To Die comes out. Add Monday’s holiday to the total and Shang-Chi is estimated to have a gross around million over the four days, very much in line with the pre-pandemic average based on its Thursday numbers. What a difference a day makes! If we can begin to measure some metrics by films just being a day or so off their pre-2019 theatrical exclusive wavelengths, we may be making some progress. Especially if we can all just stay safe out there. The Top Ten And Beyond: Candyman Holds Strong As Free Guy Sets Sights on Passing Jungle Cruise(Photo by 20th Century Studios)Shang-Chi could not deliver the best Labor Day weekend ever all by itself. The continuing success of Free Guy can not be overlooked as it made another .9 million over the weekend and .4 million total over the holiday, bringing its total to .5 million in 25 days. That is over half a million more than what Jungle Cruise had in 26 days (.97 million). Cruise, which has been available on Disney+’s Premier Access, still has a strong presence in the top 5 in its sixth weekend of release and has driven its theatrical total to 6.7 million. Free Guy, without any streaming options until the end of the month, is now likely to surpass Jungle’s numbers and possibly get as high as 0 million. Free Guy’s three-day weekend also ranks 16th all-time amongst fourth weekends for August releases – higher than Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Straight Outta Compton, Rush Hour 3, and Lee Daniels The Butler. It has made 9 million worldwide to date. Jungle Cruise is at 9 million.Candyman contributed even more money to the pot this weekend, making .4 million for a 53% drop from last weekend – better than The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’s 57% fall from a .1 million start and Old’s 59.3% fall from .8 million. With an increase to .3 million through the holiday, Candyman’s .7 million in 11 days is less than a million behind the pace of HBO Max’s The Suicide Squad, which made .6 million in 10 days. Remember that James Gunn’s day-and-date streaming film fell 71.5% down to .4 million in its second weekend. Candyman is now poised to surpass that film’s total and settle in with around million- million.Paw Patrol: The Movie, which Paramount sacrificed into theaters so Clifford the Big Red Dog could live on someday, grossed .1 million this weekend and an estimated .3 million over the holiday. No family film released in the second half of August has ever grossed million, let alone one streaming at the same time. Paw Patrol finds itself with .5 million after 17 days, which is better than The Angry Birds Movie 2 was doing in the same period in 2019 with a .94 million third weekend and .79 million. It went on to gross .66 million. Expect Paw Patrol to end up in that vicinity – lower than most family films gone hybrid this year, but potentially still higher than Sony’s Peter Rabbit 2, which was exclusive to theaters. On The Vine: James Wan s Original Horror Film, Malignant, a Venice Favorite, and MoreJames Wan’s Malignant may be the closest thing to challenge Shang-Chi’s number 1 slot (but that is still further away than Jim Carrey’s shot at Lauren Holly in Dumb and Dumber). The horror film will also be streaming on HBO Max starting Friday. In more exclusive news, STXFilms is putting the Kristen Bell and Kirby Howell-Baptiste crime comedy, Queenpins, into select Cinemark theaters, just their second during the pandemic after this February’s The Mauritanian. Then Focus will be releasing Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter, which debuted to great critical acclaim at the Venice Film Festival this past week. It currently stands at 97% on the Tomatometer.Full List of Box Office Results: September 3-6, 2021

(Photo by Universal Pictures)Do you have a favorite book-to-film adaptation? That s easy: Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men. I love the adaptive work for that film mostly because he throws the book out. Because of fanbases today, there is this fear that you have to show some fidelity to the original work. And, I think some of the most interesting adaptations are the ones that throw away everything and go down a different road.Who is an under-the-radar director or screenwriter that you think more people should know about?Sarah Gavron. She did Suffragette, and her first film was This Little Life. I watched her newest film Rocks, which hasn t been released yet, but it played at TIFF this past year. Her stories are just so specific, but they re built out in a way that they re entities, intimate worlds that are separate from our own experiences and yet they feel universal. What is the hardest review that you ve ever written? That s hard because so many things have different valuations. My first thought would be, I did a listicle about the top 20 black director films of the decade for Consequence of Sound. I would say listicles are harder than they seem because if you do them right, you have to do rewatches. You have to do research. You have to have introspection and put them in the context, everything like that. And they can actually be, if you do it right, they could be difficult.Any personal cultural piece that I write based around race is always difficult just because those pieces tend to either deal with Black Lives Matter or they deal in trauma. I m always happy that I can write about those kinds of subjects and give them a wider voice. They take a lot out of me, mostly because it s confronting things that are buried and they re buried for a reason.Writing about trauma, it s not like rolling out of bed. There are some days when even rolling out of bed is a difficult act. I don t know, it s difficult because you feel like you have to speak for a community. At least, I feel like I have to speak for a community. And, that s a dangerous trap to fall into when you feel like you re speaking for more than yourself. When I m writing these pieces, the tight rope always feels higher and the fall feels bigger and that s a terrible place to write from. Words should begin with their importance to you.The John Boyega Star Wars piece for Polygon was pretty challenging. I had one of the best editors with Matt Patches, and he was just fantastic. And, I kept trying to run away from giving definitions or from taking things down to their simplest terms because I was afraid what those definitions would say. But Matt, to his credit, pushed me – and through all of his queries, the piece ended up with what I wanted to say and not the easy way I wanted to say it.Honestly, when that piece got released, I thought, Oh my God, the Star Wars fandom is really toxic. I m going to get ripped apart. And then, I woke up and then I saw John Boyega was doing the protest through the streets of London. And I was like, Oh my God, perfect timing.” It was phenomenal timing.

It had bats, and spooky skeletons! Jean Epstein s The Fall of the House of Usher is one of the early horror masterpieces from the 1920s. And in the 1950s, France produced two of what many consider the greatest horror movies ever: Diabolique and Eyes Without a Face. Not to be outdone by the past, the aughts-bred New French Extremity movement set the new standard in brutality with the likes of Martyrs and Inside, continuing into Julia Ducournau s 2016 Raw.And now we ve collected every French horror movie with a Fresh Tomatometer score, and ranked them in our guide to the Best French Horror Movies of All Time.Best Spanish-Language Horror Movies | Best Korean Horror Movies | Best Italian Horror Movies2020 s Best Horror Movies | 200 Best Horror Movies Ever
(Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)On one fateful day in 1998, John Travolta received a call from Franchise Pictures owner Elie Samaha, who gave him some very good news. Samaha was looking to make a splash in Hollywood and told Travolta that he wanted to finance the latter s passion project, an adaptation of L. Ron Hubbard’s 1,050-page science fiction epic Battlefield Earth. Travolta had been trying to get this project off the ground for 15 years without success, even after becoming a cash machine with Pulp Fiction, Broken Arrow, Michael, The General’s Daughter, and Face/Off. Studios wanted nothing to do with a story about man-animals using 1,000-year-old airplanes to battle the kerbango -loving Psychlos who took over their planet and turned them into slaves. But by sheer force of will, Samaha was able to raise the money (more on that later), defer Travolta’s normal million paycheck, and secure the assistance of Warner Bros. to distribute the film. Two years later, on May 12th, 2000, Travolta’s -75 million budgeted (again, more on that later) Battlefield Earth opened in theaters and quickly disappeared as movies like Gladiator, Shanghai Noon, Mission: Impossible 2, and Road Trip took over screens. Two decades later, the legacy of Battlefield Earth is defined by cast and crew apologies, critical reviews that feature olympic-level insults, and a 3% Tomatometer score. With all of that said, on the 20th anniversary of the film s release, we look back and provide some insight into how Battlefield Earth came to be, and why it s almost charming in its scrappiness. You may have chosen to avoid the movie all these years because of its reputation, and while it would be a stretch to call it any good, it s definitely more fun than you might have been led to believe.IT WAS PRODUCED BY FRANCHISE PICTURES, THE COMPANY RESPONSIBLE FOR A SLEW OF ROTTEN MOVIES IN THE 2000s(Photo by Ken Hively/Getty Images)Between 1999 and 2007, Elie Samaha’s Franchise Pictures released a plethora of epically Rotten films that starred A-listers like John Travolta, Antonio Banderas, Sylvester Stallone, Jennifer Lopez, Kevin Coster, Kurt Russell, Lucy Liu, Wesley Snipes, and Bruce Willis. These movies include Battlefield Earth (3%), Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (0%), Driven (14%), 3000 Miles to Graceland (14%), Get Carter (12%), and A Sound of Thunder (6%), which put the final nail in Franchise’s movie-producing coffin. The average Tomatometer score for the company s 19 films that received a wide theatrical release (600+ screens) was 25% Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever happens to be the worst-reviewed film on Rotten Tomatoes and they only made an average of million at the worldwide box office on million budgets.Samaha was known for indulging big stars and directors by financing the passion projects that no other studio would make (e.g. Battlefield Earth for Travolta). In an educational 2000 profile by the New York Times, Samaha admitted that he would “scavenge and dig and find the script or project that a star most wants to make; finance it overseas based on the A-list clout; then shoot it in Canada to save money.” He grabbed movies in turnaround, when movie studios no longer wanted to develop them, and sometimes was lucky enough to have the stars themselves invest their own money into the project (Travolta himself reportedly spent million when Battlefield Earth ran into financial issues). Actors and acclaimed directors were attracted because they were given complete creative control, albeit on a budget. The end results were rarely Fresh, with the exception of the Jack Nicholson vehicle The Pledge and the David Mamet-directed films Spartan and Heist.IT WASN T REALLY A BIG BUDGET BOMB (Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection) There are several ways to finance a movie. There are split-rights pacts, equity deals, tax incentives and pre-sales. And then there’s Elie Samaha’s way, which nobody understands.  Variety, 2003While it’s easy to look at the -75 million budget and the subsequent million worldwide box office and assume Battlefield Earth was a box office flop, it’s a little more complicated than that. Director Roger Christian, who won a Best Art Direction Academy Award for his work on Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, wrote an open letter correcting many of the critics who called his independent little film a big budget failure. In reality, the production budget was somewhere around million, and the special effects budget was ~ million. The initial reports about it being a million-budgeted movie came about because Samaha and Franchise Pictures inflated the numbers to scam German-based Intertainment AG, the group responsible for coming up with 47% of the film s budget. During the ensuing lawsuit, in which Franchise was ordered to pay Intertainment 1 million, it was revealed that the budget was an estimated million (with Travolta receiving million of that).Cinematographer Giles Nuttgens has said that Battlefield Earth had the smallest lighting budget on any film I’ve ever done, and it’s rumored that Travolta had his personal chef cook for the crew because the food was so bad. Screenwriter Corey Mandell also went on record to say the movie had a “miniscule special effects budget.” In other words, while Battlefield Earth certainly wasn t successful at the box office, it wasn t the absolute blockbuster bomb it was made out to be, either.JOHN TRAVOLTA’S PERFORMANCE IS SO COMMITTED, IT S ADMIRABLE(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures) My whole career has been based on trying something new. If I don t try something new, I worry. John Travolta, 2000It’s been 20 years since Battlefield Earth’s release, and John Travolta’s performance remains as weird and boisterous as it was in 2000 (and if Psychlos watch it in 3000, they will likely feel the same way). Originally, Travolta wanted to play the role of Jonnie Goodboy Tyler, the leader of the human resistance against the power-hungry Psychlos. However, as the years passed and studios declined the project, Travolta got older, so the role went to Barry Pepper, who, while less ridiculous, is just as committed.Travolta instead took the role of Terl, a 10-foot-tall Pyschlo who wants to leave Earth because he’s destined for greater things than drinking kerbango and policing dumb man-animals. Travolta has said there is no better villain than Terl,  and his dedication to the role is on full display as he makes a meal out of every word, relishes every line ( Do you want lunch?! ), and seems incredibly pleased with himself (check out the laughing supercut). While his performance won multiple Razzie awards, it’s impressively committed and serves as a perfect example of what happens when an A-list talent delivers an overconfident performance with zero checks and balances.Prior to the film’s release, Travolta was the film’s biggest cheerleader, boldly stating that it was like Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope (1977), but better and the Schindler s List (1993) of science-fiction films. In an interview with The Daily Beast in 2014, he continued to defend the film and said he would do it all over again. His love stemmed from the fact that I had the power to do whatever I wanted, and I chose to do a book that I thought was worthy of making into a movie. It s a beautiful film. It s a good movie. Travolta’s longstanding defense of the film is admirable, and you can tell he loved every second he spent as a Rastafarian werewolf on four-foot-tall stilts.DESPITE ITS FLAWS, THE MOVIE HAS A LOT OF PERSONALITY(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)In 2010, co-writer J.D. Shapiro published an article titled “I penned the suckiest movie ever sorry!” for the New York Post. It’s a cheeky piece of writing that finishes with him saying, “Now, looking back at the movie with fresh eyes, I can’t help but be strangely proud of it. Because out of all the sucky movies, mine is the suckiest.” Shapiro was onto something, because part of Battlefield Earth’s charm is how odd it is.The film has an oppressive blue hue, the CGI makes Megashark vs. Giant Octopus look good, and the Psychlos move comically slow during the battle scenes (because the poor stunt actors could only move so fast on their giant stilts). The unnecessarily long 118-minute runtime tarnishes the experience, but John Travolta’s non-reaction to losing his arm when he’s tricked by Barry Pepper during their final fight (the Final Fights podcast episode about the brawl is lots of fun) is worth all the smelted gold in Fort Knox.Perhaps the most maligned aspect of the film is all the Dutch angles i.e. tilted camera angles that create an uneasy or paranoid atmosphere that director Roger Christian insisted on using to create a comic book look  for the film. The uncomfortable angles have been the subject of a vast array of commentary (for fun, Google “Dutch Angle Battlefield Earth”), including by the late, great Roger Ebert, who wrote that Christian has learned from better films that directors sometimes tilt their cameras, but he has not learned why.” The comment certainly stings, but it’s not wrong, and all Christian wanted was to make the Psychlos look taller.KERBANGO IS THE MVP(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)The best moments in Battlefield Earth all feature the alcoholic beverage kerbango. We’re not encouraging the consumption of green alien booze; we’re just saying magic happens when it’s around. Whether it’s Ker (Forest Whitaker) smugly slurping kerbango (with a straw) when he thinks he’s pulled a fast one on Terl, or Terl cradling three growlers of it in his arms as he tells the bartender (whom he later decapitates) to put it on his non-existent tab, the mood and the actors seems to loosen up whenever the the mysterious green liquid is in play. The most memorable quote in the film happens when Chirk (Kelly Preston, Travolta s wife, in a quick cameo) tells Terl, I am going to make you as happy as a baby Psychlo on a straight diet of kerbango. The odd line, followed by a long CGI tongue and a saucy wiggle by Travolta, elicits a visceral mix of confusion and disgust, which perfectly captures what it s like to watch Battlefield Earth. Is Chirk implying that Terl will feel like a drunk baby? If so, is that a good thing? Does it matter? The answers are maybe, apparently, and not in the least.Battlefield Earth isn t commonly mentioned alongside The Room, Troll 2, or Batman Robin as an exemplar of so bad, it s good cinema it s usually considered merely bad but, with respect, it should be. It s just as ironically enjoyable, it s arguably weirder, and it s just so earnest that, despite its blatant shortcomings, you may be surprised to find yourself rooting for it.Where You Can Watch It NowFandangoNOW (rent/own), Amazon (rent/own), Google (rent/own), iTunes (rent/own), Vudu (rent/own)Battlefield Earth was released on May 12, 2000.

Doom Patrol season 2 new addition Abigail Shapiro has injected a little heart and a little horror into dark, wacky, and super-violent HBO Max/DC Universe series so far. Shapiro plays Niles Caulder’s (Timothy Dalton) peculiar young daughter Dorothy Spinner. While it s one thing to have an 11-year-old child running around Doom Manor, it s a whole other issue to learn that this kid has a set of powerful imaginary friends who can cause some serious damage — one fiery bloke, in particular, can bring on the apocalypse at a moment s notice. And with each episode this season, world-ending monster The Candlemaker has continued to grow stronger.Spoiler alert: This article discusses plot details of Doom Patrol episode 208, Dad Patrol. Stop here if you haven t watched the episode. Niles has tried his best to keep his daughter sheltered from the world, while also sheltering all of humanity from her supremely dangerous potential. Now Dorothy is growing up, which causes Niles a lot of anxiety —  a universal experience all parents can relate to really. As the episodes have progressed, we ve watched Dorothy piece together the truth about her experience living under Danny the Street and her father s true motivations in keeping her there. But as much as Niles has worked to keep Dorothy a child forever, the girl s desire to be taken seriously (along with that pesky getting older thing) has made her father s fear an inevitable reality.(Photo by DC Universe)The majority of the story that plays out in Thursday s episode, Dad Patrol, is setting up this tragedy to take place. Niles wants to put Dorothy back into captivity.  And Dorothy, who experienced getting her first period earlier in the episode, decides it s best not to tell her father. She s growing up. And while a trip to the carnival gives them a fun daddy-daughter day away from it all, no one can keep Dorothy from maturing. Not even Niles.Rotten Tomatoes had the opportunity to speak with Shapiro about Thursday s Dad Patrol episode. During our chat, the 20-year-old actress discussed the challenges she faced while wearing prosthetics, the fractured trust issues Dorothy has with her father, and the impact The Candlemaker s arrival will potentially have on the series moving forward. Considering the fact that Doom Patrol is the actress s first-ever television role, her perspective of Dorothy s growth — and the fear that comes with it — adds a welcome sense of clarity and humor to the girl s challenging journey.(Photo by Photography: Emily Assiran; Hair/Makeup: Chelsea Gehr)Aaron Pruner for Rotten Tomatoes: I want to start this off by talking about the possible challenges you faced as a 20-year-old woman playing an 11-year-old girl.Abigail Shapiro: It wasn t actually too much of a challenge because I m very small. And I look pretty young for my age. I ve been playing kids for a very long time. So it wasn t something that was very new to me. Also, when you re that young you don t think of yourself as a little kid, you kind of think you re already grown up. So I tried to put myself in that mindset and let my inner freedom child run free.Dorothy s a little girl but she s also roughly 175-years-old. So there is an element of maturity, but also a yearning to hold on to her childlike wonder. Was that a fun dynamic to play?Shapiro: Yeah, definitely. She s been kept away for so long, so she really hasn t seen much of the world. Her growing up has kind of been put on hold for all of these decades if you think about it. And I don t think she actually started to grow up until the minute they saved her out of the dark. That s the first time in years she actually got a glimpse of the world and something other than Danny and her dad, occasionally.(Photo by Mark Hill/ 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved.)Since you re covered in makeup, did you find your facial expressions stifled? Because the emotionality of the character really comes across a lot more through the use of her voice. Did you find that to be the case when working to bring Dorothy to life?Shapiro: Yeah, I focused on it a bit more actually. My sister, I was rehearsing with her, my younger sister Milly Shapiro (Hereditary). She helps me with a lot of my work. I was rehearsing with her and she was like, You really need to focus on your voice acting because your face movements are going to be compromised. And I was like, you re right. So it s because of her I really started to focus on that a little bit more. Was it a lengthy application process?Shapiro: The process took about three hours in the beginning, and then we got it down to two hours. And I wear a prosthetic chin, nose, and lips, a little bit of the cheeks, the forehead, then the fake hair and I wear the fake teeth. And actually, the fake teeth were the most difficult part because I had to do the British accent and my diction was already compromised from wearing these giant fake teeth. So that was the biggest challenge with the process.(Photo by DC Universe)You mentioned Danny the Street, earlier. In episode 4, Sex Patrol, Dorothy learns he wasn t just her friend but also the prison that held her captive all these years. Was that the moment she started really listening to this darker voice, The Candlemaker, in her head?Shapiro: I think so, definitely. She s been trapped away for so long and she lived underneath Danny for decades and she s only heard the parties going on. She s never been able to actually go. So actually going to a Danny party and seeing everything makes her realize that she s been trapped for so long and hasn t had the chance to experience the world and everyone who she thought cared about her were not the people who she thought they were. She basically realizes her father doesn t want her to grow up; no one really does. And she has been unable to experience anything. It s the moment she realizes that the world isn t all rainbows and daisies. You have to experience the darker sides of the world, too, in order to grow up. And she s never experienced the darker sides of the world. I think she starts to listen to The Candlemaker because she no longer really trusts everyone around her, completely, as a child would.Still, Danny the Street represented friendship and safety to Dorothy. What do you think The Candlemaker represents to her?Shapiro: The Candlemaker, I think, represents the parts of herself that she doesn t like. Her inner demons. And throughout the season, especially in episode 8, she learns that she needs to actually face her inner demons in order to embrace them and ultimately grow up, because it isn t until your face these inner demons and the parts of yourself that you don t like that you can really take control of your life and build your own path and grow up.(Photo by DC Universe)There s a pivotal scene in this week s episode where Dorothy is in a gas station and experiences her first real puberty moment. It feels like this is a shocking instance where she is being forced to confront herself and her body for the first time, and acknowledge she can t stop herself from maturing into a young woman.Shapiro: Yeah, she gets a period. And she doesn t really know what a period is. It s kind of like her Carrie White moment. That s a great way of putting it.Shapiro: And it s the moment she realizes that she s growing up whether she likes it or not. She can t stop it, it s inevitable. And she can t be who everyone wants her to be. She can only be who she wants to be. But it s that moment of panicking of like, Oh my god, I m no longer the same person. I am no longer a little girl. What s going to happen? Like, what will the future hold? It s that kind of situation that s saying, like, OK, you re growing up! You re grown up now! And it s just slapping her in the face. That said, there is a lovely interaction between her and the woman in the gas station who ultimately helps her. After the constant protection and sheltering Niles has put her through, and the, sort of, lessons of not trusting those in the world, this woman pr

(Photo by Rogue Pictures, Dimension Film, New Line, DreamWorks / courtesy Everett Collection)All 20 Wes Craven Movies Ranked by TomatometerWes Craven s debut, 1972 s scarring rape-revenge thriller The Last House on the Left, was among the first cross-cultural grindhouse flicks out there: It cost ,00 to make and made back 36 times as much. At the time, America was mired deep in a losing Vietnam War slog just as its citizens lost faith in their social institutions, a mood reflected in Last House s success, announcing audiences new appetite for gritty, grubby, boundary-pushing cinema. Craven, already hardened beyond most normal sensibilities after a previous career directing pornographic films under different nom de guerres, knew how to push the violence, sex, and rage right up to the edge. With aspirations to emerge from the horror grotto, Craven nonetheless returned to the genre in 1977 with the agitated, belligerent The Hills Have Eyes, which transported the menace of Last House into the desert mountains. The 80s were the golden age of slasher movies, with thanks in no small part to Craven. He dipped his toe into the subgenre with 1981 s Deadly Blessing, before making the enormous slashy splash with A Nightmare on Elm Street. Dozens of slashers were being released a year by 1984, but it was Craven s bright idea to freshen things up by bringing the supernatural into the mix, thus creating one of horror s great icons: Freddy Krueger, as portrayed by Robert Englund.Horror films had a tough go at it in the 90s, both creatively and at the box office, with Craven one of few genre directors to survive with a career intact. Always one to infuse satire and literacy into the shocks wherever he could, Craven turned to meta-textual tricks for New Nightmare and Scream. The latter fit like a knife in snug flesh with the decade s laid-back cynicism, ushering in a new age of teen slashers.Highlights of Craven s post-Scream career include, of course, the well-received first sequel, directing Meryl Streep to an Academy Award nomination in Music of the Heart, and the Certified Fresh thriller Red Eye. Scream 4, in 2011, would become his final movie – and it just recently ticked over onto Fresh territory. Here, we look back on a storied film journey from one of the undisputed masters of horror, with all Wes Craven movies ranked by Tomatometer! 而在网易今年新出的MMO手游——《天谕》中,也延续了将随机性融合进了游戏的传统,像是召唤英灵、重铸装备、去大世界开箱子,甚至随便刷个野,都有可能见到自己的“成神”瞬间。
