What Can We Expect from Marvel s Phase 4?A Doctor Strange horror movie, Mahershala Ali as Blade and more there s so much to be excited about for the MCU s Phase 4.Posted by The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Monday, July 22, 2019On Saturday, July 20, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige took to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con to present what would amount to a whopping TEN titles the studio has scheduled over the course of 2020 and 2021. This included both theatrical feature film releases and the new MCU series that have been announced for the upcoming Disney+ streaming service. Here s a rundown of everything we learned during the course of the densely packed hour-and-a-half presentation. [Editor s note: With the confirmation that the schedule Marvel revealed at its panel is the entirety of Phase 4, we have updated this article accordingly.]AVENGERS: ENDGAME OFFICIALLY TOPPLED AVATAR FOR #1 BOX OFFICE RECORDRyan FujitaniNow that Disney owns the various Fox film properties, the studio finds itself in a situation where it regularly competes against itself at the box office. Having said that, James Cameron s Avatar was very much an old school 20th Century Fox release (having been released 10 years ago), so its position as the #1 box office champion of all time might have been something Disney was okay with ending, even if the Avatar sequels are still a long-term high priority (Avatar 2 is scheduled for December 17, 2021). To that end, in late June, Marvel Studios did a special push on Avengers: Endgame, with an extra scene, in the hopes that it would top Avatar, but recent speculation was that it fell just short. Not so fast, Disney seemed to say at their Marvel Studios panel Saturday, as they announced that Avengers: Endgame will earn the 0,000 needed to beat Avatar on Sunday, July 21st, 2019. The next question: will Avatar 2 be able to beat .79 billion in early 2022?SCARLETT S JOHANSSON S BLACK WIDOW CONFIRMED FOR NEXT MAY(Photo by Marvel Studios)The downside of Marvel Studios holding back certain announcements until late July is that their fans read movie news columns, so many of them already knew that they had cast the solo Black Widow movie and started filming in late May of this year. Marvel has had an untitled movie scheduled for May 1, 2020 for well over a year, which seemed very obviously to be Black Widow since they have no other movie in the works in between Spider-Man: Far from Home and Black Widow. Having said that, there were things to show off for Black Widow, such as a first look at footage from the film (which isn t online yet), and at least one casting update. English actress Florence Pugh (Lady MacBeth; Midsommar; Amy March in Greta Gerwig s upcoming Little Women) will co-star as Yelena Belova, who in the comics is the second Black Widow after Scarlett Johansson s Natasha Romanoff. We also learned that Stranger Things David Harbour will be playing Alexei Shostakov, a.k.a. Red Guardian, and Marvel villain Taskmaster will appear in the film, though we don t yet know who is playing him.THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER TO BE FIRST MARVEL SHOW ON DISNEY+(Photo by Marvel Studios)Marvel Studios mixed things up a bit this year by giving as much time and attention to their various TV shows on the upcoming Disney+ app as they did for their feature films. Although the Disney+ app is still confirmed to launch on November 12, 2019, one surprise is that we will have to wait nearly a year before the first of the new Marvel shows appears on the service. That show will be The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, with both Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprising their roles from various Captain America and Avengers movies. The big reveal for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier came in the form of German actor Daniel Brühl, who will not only return as Baron Zemo (from Captain America: Civil War), but in a brief video was shown sporting his character s iconic purple mask. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will debut on the Disney+ app sometime in the fall of 2020 (before November 6th). It s also worth noting that all of the Disney+ titles that were announced during the panel appeared in a timeline graphic labeled as PHASE FOUR, implying that the TV series will factor into the ongoing MCU narrative.THE ETERNALS CONFIRMED FOR 2020, WITH CAST REVEALED(Photo by Marvel Studios)Ever since Angelina Jolie was the first star cast in The Eternals, there has been an assumption that she would be playing long-time Avengers member Sersi. At the panel this weekend, however, it was revealed that Jolie is instead playing Thena, the inspriation for the Greek goddess Athena. (In the comics, Thena is also Thanos cousin, but it s possible Thanos connection to The Eternals may not remain the same in the movies.) Kumail Nanjiani is also not playing the character people suspected (the speedster Makkari), but will instead play Kingo, who is a samurai Eternal in the comics, but might be interpreted differently in the MCU. The Eternals will also have a few gender swaps, as both Ajak and Makkari, who are men in the comics, will be played by women instead (Salma Hayek and Lauren Ridloff, respectively). Although Sersi seems to be absent, another 1990s Avengers member will be in The Eternals instead, with Train to Busan star Don Lee (a.k.a. Ma Dong-seok) cast as Gilgamesh, a.k.a. The Forgotten One (best known for joining the Avengers when Reed and Sue Richards of the Fantastic Four did). Marvel Studios has scheduled The Eternals for November 6, 2020.THE REAL MANDARIN WILL DEBUT IN SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS(Photo by Marvel Studios)In the comics, one of Iron Man s most iconic villains since the 1960s has been the Mandarin, which is why he was teased in the first Iron Man, and ostensibly why The Mandarin was in Iron Man 3. Except, of course, he really wasn t. The decision to not include the Mandarin in his classic depiction may have been a fortuitous one for Marvel, however, as that means the villain was available for the Shang-Chi movie, now called Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. (Shang-Chi also needed a new villain, as his original arch-nemesis, Fu-Manchu, has not aged well at all.) Relatively unknown Canadian actor Simu Liu will star as Shang-Chi, with acclaimed Hong Kong actor Tony Leung playing the real Mandarin. Awkwafina was also announced in an unknown role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which will leap into theaters on February 12, 2021.WANDAVISION TV SHOW WILL TIE INTO CAPTAIN MARVEL (AND POSSIBLY THE BIGGER MCU PICTURE)(Photo by Marvel Studios)Once you get past that title, the second Marvel Studios show on Disney+, WandaVision, has a lot of promise. In the comics, the relationship (and eventual marriage) between Scarlet Witch and the Vision has been one of the sweetest in Avengers history, but it s also had a dark side that, in the early 2000s, changed the entire Marvel Universe for a while. We re trying not to be too spoilery here, but the ways in which Scarlet Witch changed things tie directly into one of the ways in which the Marvel Cinematic Universe is expected to change later in Phase 4 (we ll just let that tease sit, and comics fans know what we re talking about, anyway). WandaVision will also directly tie into the next Doctor Strange movie (more below on that) and Captain Marvel, as Teyonah Parris will co-star as Monica Rambeau, who in Captain Marvel was the young daughter of Carol s friend Maria Rambeau. (In the comics, Monica Rambeau also becomes a superhero and Avengers member known first as Captain Marvel, and then later as Photon and Spectrum.) WandaVision will debut on Disney+ sometime between February and May of 2021.MARVEL S FIRST HORROR FILM WILL BE DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS(Photo by Marvel Studios)Doctor Strange is a character whose adventures often take place amidst dazzling color and lots of eye candy (something the first Doctor Strange movie depicted well), but there are also a lot of darker themes and concepts (one of his main villains is Nightmare, for example). With that in mind, it absolutely should not be surprising that his next film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, was revealed at SDCC as being the first scary MCU film. This movie might also be the best example of a film that Marvel Studios really had to wait to reveal until after people had seen Spider-Man: Far from Home, because otherwise, it might have ruined one of that film s biggest secrets. Benedict Cumberbatch will be joined in his sequel by Elizabeth Olsen, as a follow-up to her Disney+ show, WandaVision. In the comics, Scarlet Witch s powers are much more expansive than we ve seen so far in the MCU, but her involvement here suggests that ll change. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released on May 7, 2021, and Scott Derrickson who appropriately has some serious horror films on his resume will return to direct.FAN FAVORITE TOM HIDDLESTON WILL RETURN AS LOKI ON DISNEY+ IN 2021(Photo by Marvel Studios)Time travel is so much fun. Since Avengers: Infinity War came out over a year ago, we re going to guess that it s no longer a spoiler that Loki met a very bad end at the beginning of that movie. That was, however, until Avengers: Endgame introduced time travel elements. (Is that a spoiler? Then in no way did Avengers: Endgame have time travel.) Having said that, it s also possible that Hiddleston s Loki show on the Disney+ app might come about in some unrelated way. Of all the Disney+ shows, Loki is probably the one we know the least about, but we ve got plenty of time to speculate away on it. Loki won t debut until 2021 (probably between May and July).WHAT IF JEFFREY WRIGHT VOICED THE WATCHER IN THE FIRST DISNEY+ MARVEL SHOW?(Photo by Marvel Studios)Arguably, one of the best things Marvel Comics ever had going for it over DC Comics when it came to defining its continuity was that DC Comics did not have the long-running series, What If?, in which stories could be told outside continuity, for a stronger sense overall. In the summer of 2021, Marvel Studios will be able to experiment with that sort of storytelling in the MCU when the animated series What If ? debuts on the Disney+ service. Right now, we only know the premise of the first episode ( What If Agent Peggy Carter Became Captain America Instead of Steve Rogers? ), but the massive voice cast revealed at the panel suggests What If ? will touch nearly every corner of the MCU. Several familiar faces or voices, as it were will be reprising their roles in the show, from Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Josh Brolin as Thanos to Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger and Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster. As for Uatu the Watcher, the long-running narrator of the What If ? comics, he will be the narrator here as well, with Jeffrey Wright (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, HBO s Westworld) supplying his voice.KATE BISHOP TO JOIN JEREMY RENNER IN DISNEY+ S HAWKEYE(Photo by Marvel Studios)You might notice that the general theme to these Disney+ shows (besides What If ?) is that they feature various Avengers members who aren t otherwise likely to get their own movies (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, specifically). Another example of that is Jeremy Renner s Hawkeye, who has been around the MCU since 2011 s Thor. Comic book history is littered with attempts at bringing in new blood to aging superhero premises, but comic book writer Matt Fraction was able to do just that in 2012 when he launched a new Hawkeye series about Clint Barton s friendship with Kate Bishop, a young archer who had appropriated the Hawkeye nom du heroic. We don t yet know who will be cast as Kate Bishop, but Hawkeye will indeed be about their generational exchange when it debuts on Disney+ in the fall of 2021.NATALIE PORTMAN WILL WIELD THE HAMMER IN THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER(Photo by Marvel Studios)Even if you re not a regular comic book reader, you may recall how much media attention Marvel attracted in 2014 when they introduced a new female Thor (who was eventually revealed to be his long-time human love interest, Jane Foster). Jane Foster was also the character that Natalie Portman played in the first two Thor movies, so when Portman seemed to step away from playing Foster, some fans thought that meant we d never see a female Thor in the movies. That s partly why one of the biggest surprises to come out of Marvel s SDCC panel was that Natalie Portman will be playing the title character in Thor: Love and Thunder when it s released on November 5, 2021. Chris Hemsworth will still be in the movie too, as will his Thor: Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson, who said of her character,  I think first of all as king, she needs to find her new queen. Returning director Taika Waititi revealed that the new film was inspired by Jason Aaron s The Mighty Thor storyline from the comics, which might provide some clues as to where the story will go.THE FANTASTIC FOUR AND THE MUTANTS  ARE IN THE MCU S FUTURE(Photo by TM & Copyright (c) 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Ever since Disney acquired the Fox film and TV properties, fans have been wondering when characters like Deadpool, Fantastic Four, and the various X-Men would join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Indeed, some fans apparently not familiar with what a Mysterio is even thought that we might see them introduced in Spider-Man: Far from Home. As the panel neared its end, Kevin Feige alluded to the fact that, yes, finally, Fantastic Four and the mutants (however one wants to interpret that) are now in active development for inclusion at some point. Having said that, we now know which five films are scheduled for Phase 4 in 2020 and 2021, so the earliest we might see Fantastic Four, Deadpool 3, or X-Men would be in 2022.MARVEL S PHASE 4 WILL ALSO BLACK PANTHER 2, CAPTAIN MARVEL 2, AND GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3(Photo by Marvel Studios)At one point, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was considered to be in such active development that it would be filmed this year and then released in the same slot next year that is now going to Black Widow, but that was before James Gunn was temporarily fired (he s back in Disney s good graces again). With only five movies announced for Phase 4, one might wonder about some of the obvious sequels. Well, Marvel confirmed that three of them are indeed still in the works: Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. For both Black Panther 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, the delays until no sooner than 2022 might have to do with cast scheduling, as they re both ostensibly team movies with big stars who are in high demand for other projects.TWO-TIME OSCAR WINNER MAHERSHALA ALI WILL REPLACE WESLEY SNIPES AS BLADE(Photo by Marvel Studios)When Marvel Studios put their new calendar up on the big screen at their SDCC panel this year, the last date was in 2021, indicating that Phase 4 will conclude with Thor: Love and Thunder. One new film that we now know Marvel Studios is actively developing (possibly for 2022 or 2023) is their reboot of Blade. The argument can be made that the original 1998 Blade, starring Wesley Snipes, was the first Marvel Comics adaptation to have any sort of box office success, so a new Blade movie, probably close to 25 years later, might be long overdue. For their new daywalker vampire slayer, Marvel Studios has cast two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali, who co-starred as both the villain Cottonmouth in season 1 of Netflix s Luke Cage and the villain The Prowler in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. As the panel came to a close, Kevin Feige coyly introduced Ali, who walked on stage and put on a baseball cap with BLADE emblazoned across the front before the hall went dark and the title treatment appeared on the big screen. Pretty dramatic way to end the panel, and fans went wild.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week. Warner Bros. Pictures new trailer for their upcoming Shazam! doubles down on the lighter tone of the first trailer, released back during Comic-Con in July, and continues to offer potential audiences a look at one of the more whimsical superheroes in his seemingly natural habitat – a coming-of-age story set in the DC Comics world of powers, magic and the Batman. But the trailer also offers a few clues into some interesting ideas layered into the story. So let’s take a look at five things we learned from the Shazam! trailer. The Speed of Mercury(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)In both trailers, Billy (Asher Angel as a boy and Zachary Levi as the hero) reaches out to his friend Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) to help him with all this superhero stuff. In the earlier trailer, we learned Freddy is all about the heroes. He even tries to get Billy to admit to the superpower he wants most. And now that Billy has powers – thanks to the Wizard Shazam (Djimon Honsou) – the two explore the limits of his abilities. In the comic books, the Shazam powers include the Wisdom of Solomon, the Strength of Hercules, the Stamina of Atlas, the Power of Zeus, the Courage of Achilles, and the Speed of Mercury. The Power of Zeus (as electricity manipulation), the Courage of Achilles (as “bullet immunity”), and the Strength of Hercules (conventional super-strength) were highlighted in the earlier trailer and a few television ads, but the new trailer finally showcases the Speed of Mercury in its purest form – Flash-like superspeed, which he uses to save Mary (Grace Fulton) about halfway through the trailer. As it happens, the Speed of Mercury is also the source of his ability to fly, although, as we see late in the trailer, it is first the means to leap great distances – just like Superman in his early days – and requires Billy’s concentration to master. We also expect the Wisdom of Solomon will be the last of the powers Billy will acquire, considering how often the trailers remind you he is just a boy.Philadelphia Born and Raised(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)The opening shot of the new trailer reveals Shazam! s specific geographic location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This is, of course, a departure from the comics, where Billy, Freddy, and the rest of the Shazam family live in Fawcett City – itself a nod to the character’s original publisher, Fawcett Comics. But in lieu of putting another DC Superhero in another fictional city, relocating Shazam! to Detroit offers the hero a certain grounding. Which is a good thing considering just how fantastical Shazam! really is, with its mix of magic, caped superheroes, and super-genius villains. Building up a new DC city would take too much time and energy away from making Billy’s journey to a dependable hero believable and fun. That said, we’d still love to see Hub City or Opal City featured in a DC film or television series some day.Commercial Heroes(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)One of the most interesting and recurring details across both trailers is the commercialization of the Justice League. Entering the realm of meta-commentary, we see Freddy already owns items like a Batarang replica – but then, who doesn’t at this point? – and an Aquaman logo T-shirt which looks like it came directly from a promotional event for that film. But in the new trailer, the commercialization of the League becomes a point of comedy, as the hero uses a 1/2 scale Batman toy to hinder his opponent, Sivana (Mark Strong). The toy even says the Dark Knight’s signature line “I’m Batman!” before Billy launches it at his foe. It is doubtful a bit of plastic can stop the villain, but Billy has plenty of other products to pelt him with, including toy utility belts, plastic busts, fashion dolls, child-sized costumes, and even branded skateboards. And at this point, there is plenty to poke fun at in regards to the Justice League as a toy brand. For decades, Warner Bros. has been licensing the characters and their logos for products as expensive as a recent Batman: The Animated Series Batcave playset and as cheap as paper birthday party supplies. It s something that comics and television shows have touched upon, but it is new material for a live-action film based on the DC Comics characters. The Powers Of Sivana(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)And where would Shazam! be without a proper antagonist? With the character’s traditional archenemy, Black Adam, held in reserve for either the sequel or his own solo film starring Dwayne Johnson, the first film focuses on the hero’s oldest foe, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. This version of the character, though, may not be the one comic book fans would naturally expect to see.For most of his existence, Sivana has been a character of science, using his intellect and inventions to battle the hero and conquer the world. His attempts always, eventually, fail. In more recent years, he was revised into a scientist desperate to quantify magic, with a raid on Black Adam’s tomb giving him the ability to “see” magic in one eye a visual cue definitely present in the trailer. But for the purposes of the film, Sivana is a former pupil of the Wizard Shazam. And as seen in the trailer, he appears to have some of Billy’s powers as well – the Powers of Zeus, Hercules, and Achilles being the most obvious. He also deduces that Billy is much younger than his hero self, though you wouldn t need the Wisdom of Solomon to guess that. Nevertheless, that knowledge will come in handy as Sivana and Billy become mortal enemies. He Doesn’t Have A Name… Yet(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)And if you’ve noticed we’ve avoided referring to Billy as “Shazam” whenever possible, that s because of the key moment in the second trailer when Freddy refers to him as “Captain Sparklefingers.” It feels important. There is also a subsequent moment, after Billy saves Mary with the Speed of Mercury, in which she awkwardly says, “you are the hero. ” It tells us that for most the film, Billy will be in search of a name. It is a thematically interesting idea that corresponds to Shazam’s publishing history in a very unique way.The character debuted in 1940 as Captain Marvel. His comics – published by Fawcett – soon began to outsell Superman and Action Comics. As impossible as it seems now, he was the most popular superhero of the decade. Noting the similarities to their character, DC tried to sue Captain Marvel out of existence, and after 8 years of litigation, Fawcett settled and ceased publishing Captain Marvel comics in 1953. This would lead to the creation of Marvelman in the UK comics scene – a story for another time – and eventually, Marvel Comics debuted their own Captain Marvel, making sure to file a trademark on the name in 1967. When DC finally bought Captain Marvel and the associated characters, they were forced to refer to him as “Shazam” on comic book covers while still calling him Captain Marvel in the interior pages. This practice finally ceased in 2011, when the company declared he only had one name: Shazam.Nonetheless, people still enjoy pointing out this curious bit of comic book history, made all the more curious by the fact that Marvel s Captain Marvel feature film and DC s Shazam! open in theaters a month apart. It seems the destinies of all Captain Marvel characters are inexorably linked.Either way, all signs point to Billy embracing the Shazam name by the end of the film. If that turns out to be the case, the issue of Billy’s superhero name will parallel his journey to control his powers and save the day. It s suitably whimsical, even if the film downplays some of the character’s more whimsical elements (like a verbal tiger man called Tawky Tawny). But it leaves us wondering if Freddy and Mary – who became the heroes Captain Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel in the comics – will go on similar journeys, should they receive powers in a sequel.Shazam! opens everywhere on April 5.Like this? Whether in series regular roles like NYPD Blue and The West Wing or season arcs on 24: Legacy, How to Get Away with Murder, and Dexter, networks know Smits is the kind of reliable star they want to anchor a new fall show.Bluff City Law is about a father/daughter legal duo who team up to fight injustice. Smits plays Elijah Strait, who reconnects with daughter Sydney (Caitlin McGee) after his wife/her mother’s funeral and convinces her to leave corporate law and join his firm to fight for the very people those companies hurt.Smits told Rotten tomatoes that being back in a courtroom, even a television courtroom with a script, made him realize his TV law was a little rusty.“I remembered a couple of things. Objection!, ” Smits joked. “We’re really fortunate because the technical advisers, consultants have been really great in terms of helping us out with all the procedural stuff. It’s important to me. I’m a stickler on that kind of thing, on any type of thing, whether it’s a cop show [or a lawyer show].”(Photo by NBC)Bluff City Law is the first courtroom drama for McGee, who was glad to have a TV lawyer veteran there to mentor her.“It was called Smits Academy of Law and Order,” McGee said. “Really, the thing that was most useful to me in my research was when we actually got to watch a case and we got to see how performative lawyers have to be and how important it is to keep people engaged and interested in your side of the argument. The case McGee watched was a medical malpractice case where she saw the doctor in question testify on the stand. That just might come in handy for Bluff City Law. So will the jargon.“The whole thing about the jargon, no matter what area it is, it’s part of what we do,” Smits said. “It’s like learning another language almost, right? If you’re playing a doctor, it’s part of the fascinating thing what we do, the research part, whether it’s jargon, the technical aspects of it.”In their first case together, Elijah and Sydney team up against a chemical company whose product they believe caused their client’s cancer.“In terms of the particular case that we were handling, I tried to do the backstory on that and with regards to the real case that it was based on,” Smits said. “Speaking to the people who are the technical advisers on the show, going to cases, it’s all part of what we do as actors. That’s the fun part.”(Photo by Paul Gilmore/NBC)Bluff City Law is set and filmed in Memphis, Tennessee, which automatically gives it a different vibe than Los Angeles. Smits says filming any show in 2019 is automatically more advanced too.“Our show looks a lot different and it’s much more cinematic,” Smits said. “That’s not a slight on L.A. Law at all, but it’s really cinematic, and Memphis is a vibrant part of the show. The look is a lot different. You can actually have drone shots, [but] we haven’t had one yet.”Smits also looks back fondly on NYPD Blue, the landmark 90s cop show he joined in season two after David Caruso left.“I was working on the same lot, so I knew when they had written the pilot that it was going to be ground-breaking,” Smits said. “I didn’t know it was going to be the phenomenon that it turned out to be, so it was kind of fortuitous to me it came back around.”(Photo by Jake Giles Netter/NBC)NYPD Blue pushed broadcast standards for language and nudity in order to show what life is really like for policemen and women. Today, a show like that might be on streaming with no restrictions at all.“A show like that, you could not pitch that show to a network [today],” Smits said. “It wouldn’t happen. It just wouldn’t happen. The landscape of television is much more niche-oriented now. Certainly, edgier topic matter is something that we’ve gone for [on Bluff City Law], but I don’t know if you’re going to see naked butts on our show. That’s not going to happen.”McGee was ready to show Sydney’s love life explicitly, though.“You might see a back though, a naked back, maybe some abs,” McGee joked. “Hopefully it’ll be Barry Sloane’s.”Sloane plays Jake Reilly, another lawyer at the Strait firm. Josh Kelly plays Sydney’s ex-husband Robbie, a detective who is still broken-hearted over Sydney. And while the legal drama is one focus of the series, the Straits personal lives will come into play as well.“We established in the first episode what we’re all about, what the firm is about,” McGee said. “We are a legal drama, but once you really get to know these characters you’re just going to want to know more about their personal lives. You’re going to want to meet their spouses, their exes, see their homes. You’ll definitely get to see more of that.”(Photo by NBC)That, said Smits, will make the legal cases even more compelling.“I think that the audiences will engage more in the legal aspects of the show once they know all of the little character traits that each one of the characters has,” he said.Bluff City Law premieres Monday, Sept. 23 at 10 p.m. on NBC.

Ghcxuf (Photo by Merie Weismiller Wallace / © Focus Features / Courtesy Everett Collection)Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: Congratulations on the film. When I saw it earlier this year, it took me by complete surprise because I think, like a lot of people, I d gone in thinking I was going to get something a bit more Atomic Blonde or Britney from the “Toxic” music video, and this was a much more grounded, real story and went in directions I was not expecting. Was the goal to tell a more relatable revenge story?Emerald Fennell: I love the revenge genre. I just think it s one of the most pleasurable, cathartic things. But I think that I wanted, for a while, to see if it was possible to make a revenge movie that had all of the pleasures of the genre but had a very real woman at the center of it, kind of behaving in a way that I think real women do. So part of that was thinking: What would I do? If I really wanted to go on my revenge journey, what could I do? I m not very handy, and certainly no good with a machete, so what s within my power? And it started from there.Do you think the fact that people might go in, like I did, expecting something more typical of the genre works to the film’s advantage?Fennell: Absolutely. It s sort of designed to undercut and use those tropes and twist those tropes. It’s always fun [when someone] has a familiarity with the genre so that you can kind of surprise them; that was always very much intentional and really very fun in the writing, trying to find those ways of being surprising. I hope that it s just as gripping and enjoyable as the more traditional version would be, but it also kind of maybe packs a more personal punch.(Photo by © Focus Features)One other thing that may surprise viewers is that you ve chosen to examine the #MeToo moment and rape culture not by looking at a case that might be more sensational – sort of a Weinstein-esque, cut-and-dried, black-and-white case. Rather, this is more the stuff we hear about on college campuses all the time, stuff that we ve probably touched in our real lives in some way – more “Cat Person” or Kavanaugh. Was that your entry point? To tackle #MeToo in a way many people probably have some connection to, even if they don t think of it in that way?Fennell: I guess, [but] it wasn t as deliberate at that. I m not really interested in heroes and villains. I m really interested in good people doing bad things, and growing up as I did in the noughties, this was just endemic, just completely normal. It was the punchline of every Hollywood comedy movie, getting girls drunk. Every coming-of-age story was like: “Give her a drink.” Is there a drunk girl here? “Great!” It was on network TV shows. It was so normal. And that is what is so deeply disturbing to me, is that it s very easy when it s villains, it s very easy when it s people that you don t like. What s very complicated is when it s something that, as you say, almost everyone has an experience with, to some degree, because it was normalized. That s chilling. And where do we go from there, then, when everyone feels slightly differently? Everyone s kind of making their own excuses; nobody s really willing to talk about it openly. So that s kind of where Cassie s journey begins. If there isn t anything wrong with this, why do you feel so attacked or freaked out? I think it s just an interesting place to start.(Photo by © Focus Features)It s interesting to hear you mention the noughties pop culture. You and I both grew up as teens in that era. When you mentioned that culture, all these films came flooding back to me. There s been a lot of talk about grappling with those cultural artifacts; and regarding the ’80s, we saw Molly Ringwald s essay in The New Yorker doing just that, looking at the John Hughes films that she was a part of. Do you have a view as to how we look back on those things, now that elements of them do feel problematic when put under a modern microscope?Fennell: Well, I think the way you hope that society and culture moves on is that we learn as we go, which means you have to find merit in things that maybe have stuff that s problematic. Obviously, I think lots of people think that this film is very sort of scorched-earth, but actually, I do think that, for me, so much of the movie is about forgiveness and redemption and the possibility of those things. But those things only come after some honesty and some self-scrutiny and apology.I do feel like certainly some I m sort of careful never to shame any particular movies, because I think actually times do change, and there ll be things in 20 years, I m sure, that my children will find problematic about stuff. So, I think in order for any of us to move forward in any artistic medium and as a society, [we have to] understand things will change, and that s okay. At the same time, ignoring it isn t useful, so I think it s just important that we acknowledge that there s some stuff that isn t great. But that s of its time, I suppose.(Photo by © Focus Features)You’ve said that you wanted this film not to be a treatise, but to be fun and to entertain. One of the things I think people will love, in addition to the thriller elements and the revenge elements, is the hilarious dialogue, particularly from some of the boys Cassie picks up. I was thinking about the scene with Christopher Mintz-Plasse in the apartment, where he tells her about his novel and offers her “kumquat liqeur.” It’s so cringey. How fun was it to write the most dickish things guys could possibly say in that situation?Fennell: So fun. I love all that stuff, and also stuff like the costumes – giving Sam Richardson a leather trilby and boot-cut jeans with leather shoes. And with Neil, who s Chris Mintz-Plasse s character, we designed the name of the fake album that he s snorting coke off, and we decided to be very, kind of, culture-y appropriate-y. So there are a lot of dreamcatchers. Every woman who worked on this film in the crew, when we went to the set after it had been dressed, they all went: “Yeah, I ve been in this room.”There s so much pleasure in that. That s why I think, partly, the only way of communicating this kind of stuff really effectively is with humor. Because although it s hard material – there are moments in this movie that are abjectly not funny – for me, communicating anything really serious, I ve only ever been able to do that like this. I m only sad that the Chris Mintz-Plasse scene is much shorter than it was [originally], just because the movie is long; the details of his novel are missing [in the final film], but there s a lot of detail about his novel, set in the first person, over the course of one night in New York, from different people s perspective it goes on and on and on and on and on. And there was lots of great stuff about him making her breakfast in bed and his pronunciation of eggs hollandaise [said with a silent “h”]. That stuff, that s so much fun, always.(Photo by Merie Weismiller Wallace / © Focus Features / Courtesy Everett Collection)And Cassie s [dialogue] I love writing, I just love it, I find it so pleasurable. I really, really did want to make a movie that was accessible, that wasn t just for people who d considered this stuff very deeply, but it would be enjoyable and appealing for everyone to see. I never wanted it to be a very bleak, depressing, earnest film. Even though it is, in many ways, all of those things. I tried as best I could to make it a pleasure to watch.Speaking of dialogue, the first spoken words you hear in the movie are f k her, and I was like, okay, that s a bold start and a statement! And the other thing that stood out was how frequently characters used the phrases crazy bitch and nice guy,” which are the exact phrases we so often see people instinctively go to when it comes to labeling men and women, particularly in a he-said/she-said situation. Was that repetition conscious? Fennell: Definitely, I think so. It s hard to have these discussions in a very, completely unique way, because actually, we fall back so quickly on the clichés. You see it with Dean Walker [Connie Britton; in the film, Walker dismissed a victim’s story because the accused was a nice guy ] and the way that she speaks: Well, you know It s all of the things we ve heard with these incidences. And I think, again, it s a mark of people who haven t really interrogated something themselves very much, that actually they just speak in these quite clichéd, old-fashioned terms. Certainly, the crazy f king bitch thing. As Carey s present, I gave her a necklace that said Crazy F king Bitch on it, because I do just think, honestly, I ve definitely come to a stage in my life where I really think of that as a compliment.(Photo by © Focus Features)When it came to casting the so-called nice guys of the movie, it feels like you went through a Rolodex and said, Who are the nicest-seeming men in Hollywood? You’ve got Adam Brody and Max Greenfield and Sam Richardson… Was the idea to cast these people that we know and love from other roles?Fennell: Well, it s a couple of things. I think they re all genuinely brilliant, so I knew that they d be able to do this, but they re kind of playing parts All of these guys think they re nice guys. What is a nice guy? All of them think that they re “nice.” I said to Adam, when we were doing all that stuff, I said, This is the rom-com. You are the star of a rom-com; this is the beginning of a rom-com. This is the messy night where you guys meet, which becomes the love of your life. It s just that often, people don t notice, in real life and in rom-coms, that the girl isn t really having the conversation in the way that they think she is, you know? So that s also really fun, because really, that first scene, or the second scene, rather, in Jerry s [Brody] apartment, it s the beginning of a romantic comedy; it s just that she s not talking. Which most romantic comedies are [like], actually.(Photo by © Focus Features)The other thing that makes the movie so much fun is the style – the colors and framing and all that great stuff. The thing that really stuck out, though – and it’s the noughties teen in me – was this use of pop music: “Stars Are Blind,” “Toxic,” “2 Become 1.” Bo Burnham and Carey spoke to us about the music at Sundance, and they were talking about how the film reclaims a lot of these songs as quality, not just pop dross to be dismissed. What was your thinking behind the musical selections?Fennell: [I chose them] because I love them, I suppose, is kind of a weird answer. But I think that pop music, often female-led pop music, is a bit like nail polish and a bit like wearing pink: it s kind of an indication that you re not a serious person. And that s useful: If the whole movie is kind of about appearances being deceiving, then making it feel as fun and innocuous as possible was good. But also, they re really powerful, these songs, because we re bringing so much to them. The “Toxic” version that s in this movie, it s a mixture of all the different parts of “Toxic” and it s slowed right, right down, so we slowed down the orchestra. But what s so thrilling about it is that everyone instantly recognizes it, even though we ve really abused it and stretched it and kind of changed it. Then the audience is bringing in so much of their own stuff, because they know the lyrics, they know what they mean. It’s about using those personal relationships with the music in a positive way, and also looking at lyrics.“It s Raining Men” [also featured in the film] is a good example of a lyric that is quite sinister when you put it in this context. And the first lines of the movie, even before f k her, are sung, and they re Charli XCX, and they re I was busy thinking about boys. And I think that s what Cassie s been doing, that s what I ve been doing. Finally, speaking of lyrics, my favorite musical moment, or the one that sort of made me go, wow, is your use of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Something Wonderful.” Which is markedly different from most of the other songs. Fennell: Yeah. What was your thinking behind including that particular standard, which – when you look at the words – is so potent?Fennell: Again, I just think it s such a moving song. It s one of the most romantic songs ever written, I think, and Rodgers and Hammerstein are just geniuses at that kind of deeply felt romance. But it s also all about an incredibly cruel man who occasionally does something wonderful. When the song is playing over the thing we re seeing, it s a song that excuses behavior. That s always going to be the perfect thing that you re looking for, and that s what we re looking for all the way through this movie, which is stuff that was sort of both on the surface immensely pleasurable, but then underneath, also kind of troubling. And funny, darkly funny.Promising Young Woman is in theaters December 25, 2020.Thumbnail images by Rich Polk/Getty Images, ©Focus FeaturesOn an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News. 😈😈

bob官方体育登陆 Presenting their off-screen growth in the since Thor: The Dark World and Ant-Man and The Wasp was definitely intentional, though.“We wanted them to be the heroes of their space, and so, in order to be that, they needed to be good at their job, they needed to have grown professionally and personally and, yeah, people seem to be here for it,” Schaeffer said. The series creator also aimed to put both characters in the position of the fans themselves – charting Wanda and Vision’s (Paul Bettany) movements within the sitcom-ized Westview and scanning the earlier episodes for clues about their predicament, although she and the writing staff arrived there by a circuitous route: Initially, it was a chance for the writers to put parts of the whiteboard they were using to map the show into the series.“It was us trying to make sense of the rules of the world that we were creating and the mystery that we were building, Schaeffer said. And so a constant thing was stacking up the questions and then deciding when that question was answered and moving those cards around.”Some of that thought-process made its way onto the set in the form of Agent Woo s whiteboard. Which is not to suggest the board contains clues, though. As Schaeffer sees it now, it is very much a case of the writers engaging in the same questions the fans are now asking four episodes in. Although, she admits she did not “anticipate the one-to-one sort of fan simulcasts” emerging from each episode.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios 2021. All Rights Reserved.)The level of interest and analysis supporting the “simulcasts” is thrilling to Schaeffer.“People care and your greatest desire as a content creator is that people care,” she said. “So much agony goes into every single decision. So for people to then examine those decisions and pour over those decisions, I mean, it s really making me feel like I m super important,” she joked. “But it s also a little intimidating because I want people to feel satisfied about where the show goes and I just really hope they do.”As for our own examination of the details in the kitchen sets and the possibility that it may be commenting on the roles of women on sitcoms like The Dick Van Dyke Show and Bewitched, Schaeffer said it may be more of a subconscious element in recreating the look of those programs’ kitchens than a direct story point.“The kitchen is such an important space and, especially in the earlier sitcoms, that was where the ladies hung out most of the time,” she said, crediting production designer Mark Worthington and episode director Matt Shakman with paying so much attention to the details of the shows being honored via the constantly-changing home Wanda and Vision share.(Photo by ©Marvel Studios 2021. All Rights Reserved.)She also noted certain aspects of the sets remain the same from episode to episode.“We wanted a continuity of feeling in the sets,” she explained. “So that s why the kitchen and the living room are always oriented the same way, the doorway, all of that has a consistent layout to it.”Indeed, the door to the front yard stays to the far left of the set, while the stairwell – since it debuted – remains in the center, and the kitchen to the far right. Whether or not the changes to the set have a deeper meaning remains to be seen. Schaeffer suggested a deep-dive Q A with Worthington about his choices “might have to wait” until the full scope of the series is revealed.Another question that will have to wait: whether or not Wanda can grieve. It is another key detail the series appears to be circling around, and Schaeffer only offered that Wanda is a “complex lady.”That complexity is a clue to why she would recreate family sitcoms of the 1960s and ’70s – if she is behind all of this, of course – but it also speaks to the character’s experience with television. As it happens, no sitcom of the late ’70s fits the world she seems to be creating in Westview. That era of family sitcoms was dominated by producer Norman Lear, whose All in The Family, Maude, and Good Times confronted societal ills in a very direct way. Though Schaeffer and the writing team took a good look at those programs, she said, “The overt social commentary of those shows didn t entirely align with what we were doing in the ’70s.”Joel MearesWanda’s version of the Me Decade definitely appears dominated by the more affluent world of the Bradys than, say, that of the project-dwelling Evans family of Good Times or the one Maude Findlay strove to make for herself. A Wanda Maximoff hoping to avoid poverty and racial or political unrest is not hard to imagine, and as we will likely see in upcoming episodes, television shifted back toward an idealized middle-class affluence in the 1980s – something that will enable her to maintain the fantasy.Regardless of how 20th-century sitcoms approached their material, they always did it in the classic (and boxy) 4:3 frame of cathode ray tube televisions. With WandaVision’s fourth episode, the Marvel world returned to the widescreen view of films like Iron Man and Avengers: Endgame. And now that the series has played with both frame sizes, Schaeffer said she expects viewers will embrace any screen size, color scheme, or plot development the program can dream up next.“We ve thrown a lot at them and what they ve shown us is that they are ready for switcheroos and surprises and playing with form and structure,” Schaeffer said. “And they should expect a lot.”
