Hanna, Amazon Prime Video s new action series about a teenage assassin, is the second TV-to-film adaptation — after What We Do in the Shadows — to hit the small screen in the past week (with some of its original creative team intact, too). Like the 2011 Saoirse Ronan film of the same name, the show crosses the globe as Hanna, bent on vengeance, evades an off-book CIA agent. But it expands the world of the film as well, and provides much more (Photo by Paola Kudacki/BBC America)When Killing Eve first premiered, the urgent feeling that the show s protagonist, British Intelligence investigator Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), would be killed by the Season 1 finale, was ever-present. But what started as an engaging cat-and-mouse procedural between Eve and unhinged assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer) soon evolved into the most unexpected love story to hit the small screen in years. And with Fleabag s Phoebe Waller-Bridge at the helm, it s no surprise that the show became a bonafide hit.If Season 1 was the awkward dating phase of their relationship, then the show s second installment could easily be viewed as the honeymoon. The BBC America show found Eve and Villanelle teaming up in an opposite-sides-of-the-law, Silence of the Lambs-style partnership. Their teamwork succeeded at bringing down Aaron Peel (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), a tech-savvy enemy who was working to pawn off a mysterious (and obviously dangerous) weapon, while inching Eve even closer to the dark side.Eve and her team worked at capturing Peel with Villanelle going deep undercover to woo the man. And while it all came to a head with Polastri s psycho partner slitting his throat, the Season 2 finale didn t end well for either of them. In a cliffhanger that sort of mirrored the closing of the first season where Eve stabbed Villanelle in the gut, the tables were shockingly turned, as Villanelle took out a gun and shot Polastri. As she lay bleeding out on the ground, many were left to wonder if the BBC America series was following through on the title s promise and actually killed Eve.As Killing Eve is set to return with new episodes on Sunday, April 12 at 9pm ET/PT to BBC America, that cliffhanger weighs heavily. It s not a spoiler to confirm Eve Polastri is still very much alive in Season 3, but the big question for fans is: How is the show s health as it moves into its third set of episodes? Does the story still deliver the witty edge and violent drama that connected with audiences in the first place? Are Oh and Comer, who ve both earned much-deserved accolades for their work, still turning in masterful performances? And does season 3 – overseen by new showrunner Suzanne Heathcote, following on from Phoebe Waller-Bridge (season 1) and Emerald Fennell (season 2) – leave us wanting a fourth helping of Eve and Villanelle? Here s what critics are saying about Season 3 of Killing Eve.THE SHOW STILL HAS ITS SIGNATURE STYLE AND BRUTAL PANACHE It can’t be stressed enough that Killing Eve Season 3 does not pull its punches, emotionally or when it comes to violence. In the five episodes sent to critics, there are truly grisly kills, horrific acts of cruelty, and some really shocking deaths. Killing Eve Season 3 manages to heighten the stakes once more. No one is safe, and you get the sense that the show is trying to expand itself beyond Eve and Villanelle’s relationship. — Meghan O Keefe, Decider One of the most refreshing shifts from last season is the music this season goes back to the beginning with a variety of dreamy foreign language tunes, with an emphasis on chic French electro-pop. On the rare occasion when the musical palette shifts greatly, it represents something greater and is well worth it. Often the lyrics line up astonishingly well with what’s happening on screen, alternately broadcasting Eve or Villanelle’s inner creep for all of us to hear. The music toys with us now that we have the audacity to think we know Killing Eve’s beats. More than ever before, it feels like Killing Eve is in direct conversation with its audience, daring us to declare our hunches, hope for our fanfics, and try to outsmart all three women, if not the show itself. — Delia Harrington, Den Of GeekVILLANELLE GETS AN ORIGIN STORY, AND JODIE COMER SHINES AGAIN  (Photo by Des Willie/BBCA) Heathcote shifts the focus more to Villanelle in Season 3, digging into her past and rounding out the character’s origin story. Comer once again delivers a virtuoso performance that combines unhinged mania with wounded vulnerability and desire. The character has such a sense of whimsy and romanticism that you can occasionally forget that she’s a stone cold serial killer. — Brandon Katz, Observer As Villanelle desires to move into management the audience meets the o.g. Villanelle played by Harriet Walter and to say they have a hate-love relationship is an understatement. If you win an Emmy for Eve it affords you a bottle episode (five) which after the events at the end of four kills the series momentum. Obviously, Villanelle had a horrible mother and this was not a storyline I believe needed a full episode to explore. — Amanda Spears, Awards Watch BUT WE COULD DO WITH A LITTLE MORE EVE(Photo by Laura Radford/BBCA) Comer is great, so it doesn’t hurt to have more of her. But Oh is great as well, and it feels wrong to have her sidelined so much. Surely there must be a way to give the two leads equal time to share the spotlight. Comer’s role is the flashier one – she gets to have all the fun, killing her way across the landscape. Oh’s work is more subtle, more reserved, and that perhaps contributes to her reduced role. Oh is doing a lot of internal work here – Eve is broken now. Perhaps broken beyond repair. — Chris Evangelista, SlashFilm It may not be as balanced as it was in that first magical outing, and some of the plot points may feel a little recycled, but Killing Eve ultimately remains a devilish delight. — Allison Keene, Paste MagazineSEASON 3 s SHOWRUNNER IS TAKING RISKS, FOR BETTER AND WORSE

The project would be the first DC Films superhero movie starring a Latino character.Scarface remake writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer wrote the screenplay for the movie and Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto will direct the movie about Reyes/Blue Beetle, a Mexican-American teenager who found the Blue Beetle scarab on the way home from school, per the DC.fandom.com Wiki. The series revolves around a group of four Indigenous teens in rural Oklahoma who commit crimes in pursuit of raising enough cash to move to California, which they believe to be some sort of utopia. The show is sincere and funny, with indigenous people in the cast, in the writers room, and directing and producing. It was conceived by longtime friends Waititi and Harjo, an Oklahoma native, one night in Waititi’s kitchen, during a deep conversation aided by lots of tea … “hard tea,” Waititi said. “Tequila-flavored tea,” Harjo added. The friends also were committed to a different tone for the show, one that wouldn’t rely on old, and even more recent, cliches about depressing life on Native American reservations.“We don t want to depress people,” Waititi said during the TCA discussion. “There s so much humor in our communities. There s so many jokers, and it s not … I always say that I thought some of my early films would get negative feedback about them because they were, like, ‘Well, there s not enough culture specificity, and it sort of paints a depressing picture of …’ or, like, ‘You are also making fun.’ They didn t quite know how to take it.“And I was, like, ‘I get what s happening’ … All they want is to see us, like, riding whales, talking to trees, you know, playing flutes on mountaintops and talking to ghosts and learning something from our grandmother. And that s it. That s all that they expect.  And to twist those expectations is a powerful thing.”Reservation Dogs premieres on FX August 9.Also during TCA, Hulu announced premiere dates and released trailers for some of its top fall programming.Limited series Dopesick examines how Purdue Pharma triggered the worst drug epidemic in U.S. history. “Shang-Chi realizes his father is one of the world’s greatest criminals: How do you process that? How do you deal with that as a child and evolve beyond that?” Shang-Chi is a movie that I think first ended up on a list of “wouldn’t it be great if we could do this as a movie” ideas probably 20 years ago. It’s a great story of a young man that realizes his father is essentially one of the world s greatest super villains, one of the world s greatest criminals: How do you process that? How do you deal with that as a child and how do you evolve beyond that? And the heroism needed to break free of that and grow beyond that. Even in our film, to realize that there are many sides to all stories and that the world s perception of his father and his perception of his father is more complex than perhaps he initially thought. That was a great driving story for us that we wanted to explore someday. Looking for a filmmaker to do it was obviously – as it always is – important. And Destin Daniel Cretton coming in and again, dedicating his talents… He s an amazing filmmaker who does amazing movies that have been on a smaller-budgeted size compared to a big Marvel movie, but coming in and giving his personal vision to this story of this father and son and really this family, was very special. (Photo by Marvel Studios)“Simu came up late in the casting process, when you start to get to that point of maybe it’s not going to happen.” How we could find somebody to play Shang-Chi was Destin’s biggest question when he signed up as director. Our producer. Jonathan Schwartz. and casting director ,Sarah Finn, looked at hundreds of people and Simu [Liu] came up relatively late in the process, when you just start to get to that point of maybe it s not going to happen. Because what you want is everybody in your inner circle – the producers, the filmmakers – to see somebody and look at each other and go, We found this person. This is the one. We hadn t had that on Shang-Chi at this point.Simu came in and Sarah Finn had seen him before and brought him in again and he did a great reading with Destin. He then did a great chemistry read with the Awkwafina, who was gracious enough to do that. And a little bit I was like, Who is this fellow? Let s look them up. (That s what you do nowadays: You look up, who is this guy?) And he did have this infectious personality online in the way he interacted with the world, and with the fandom of his show that he was doing in Canada at the time, and with his sports team that he was a fan of that was doing well when I happened to search him. He’s the real deal. Bringing a new Marvel hero into the fold is never easy, and there is always a lot of pressure on us and I m sure on the actors, but Simu has pulled it off in ways that again, I m very excited for audiences to finally see in September. (Photo by Marvel Studios)“Just because the Iron Man 3 version of the Mandarin wasn t real didn t mean there s not a leader of the Ten Rings organization and that is who we meet for the first time in Shang-Chi.” That subtitle in the Legend of the Ten Rings actually connects it back to the very beginning of the MCU, the Ten Rings being the organization that kidnapped Tony Stark at the very beginning of Iron Man 1. And that organization was inspired by a character called the Mandarin in the comics. And going back to Iron Man 1, we ve been talking about, When do we bring this character to the screen?, and only wanted to do it when we felt we could do it supreme justice and really showcase the complexity of this character, which frankly we couldn t do in an Iron Man movie because an Iron Man movie is about Iron Man. An Iron Man movie is about Tony Stark.Shane Black, in his film [Iron Man 3] and his script that he co-wrote, came up with this fun twist that we love to this day, and [the Mandarin] turned out to be Trevor Slattery. Just because that version wasn t real didn t mean there s not a leader of the Ten Rings organization and that is who we meet for the first time in Shang-Chi. And again, talking about actors making these characters come to life, Tony Leung playing Shang-Chi s father and the leader of the Ten Rings is another pinch-yourself, dream-come-true moment, because he s one of the best actors of our time, and we’re very excited to have him introduced to, I hope, a whole new fan base who might not be aware of his spectacular work that he s done. (Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)“That is The Abomination fighting Wong in the Shang-Chi trailer.” We just recently released the final trailer for Shang-Chi. Some fans said, ‘This looks like a character they hadn’t seen in many years named The Abomination, fighting a character that looks like Wong. And I can say that the reason it looks like that is because that is Abomination fighting Wong. Yes. And again, [it’s] a fun thing to have a character that we haven t had on screen in over a decade show up again in the MCU. And to see fans on that little tag of the trailer recognize that and embrace that is great fun.”(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)In Eternals, “these are 10 new characters coming into the world, which is a very difficult thing to do, and Chloé Zhao embraced that challenge and had a unique viewpoint for every single one of them.”“Chloé Zhao had expressed interest in Marvel many years ago; even when Brad Winderbaum, producer on Black Widow, was looking for a filmmaker, her name came up. She d done a great film called The Rider and she ended up not coming in on that film, I don t believe, and we were very lucky to get Cate Shortland to direct that movie at Scarlett s suggestion. But when we were working on Eternals, our producer Nate Moore was coming up with this pitch to really embrace one of Jack Kirby s greatest creations for Marvel – amongst all of his great creations, but The Eternals, this race of immortal beings who ve been on Earth for millennia, is one of his best. And he asked Chloé to come in and meet and they really just clicked on this notion of a history of humanity and what it means to be human and the viewpoint of that through these characters, The Eternals. And she came in with a pitch that got into visuals, which was beautiful, but more importantly, into these characters. These are 10 new characters [coming] into the world, which is a very difficult thing to do, and she embraced that challenge and had a unique viewpoint for every single one of them. And I m happy to say that from that initial pitch and meeting to near-final version of the film, where we are now, she has both won a handful of Academy Awards in between and delivered on her promise of what The Eternals could be.”(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)“Marvel can tell stories as big as the Big Bang and the foundation of the universe itself and the foundation of reality, and tell something as small and moving as Peter Parker s origin story…. That makes Marvel Marvel.”“It was always our hope that Marvel Studios to be able to pull off even a little bit, in a cinematic form, what publishing had been able to do in the comics for 70-plus years. And that is everything from the genius of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko and all of the spectacular artists and writers – they can tell, honestly, stories as big as the Big Bang and the foundation of the universe itself and the foundation of reality, and tell something as small and moving as Peter Parker s origin story or that moment in the Loki series when Tom Hiddleston is watching himself in clips from Endgame. It is so heartbreaking, it is so moving… Well, that show i has space lizards and deals with time itself. It is both that makes Marvel Marvel. It is being able to do the world outside your window on a very personal, emotional level, and come at it from a viewpoint that hopefully makes you think about your place in the grander scheme of reality in the universe. And speaking of Eternals, I ve seen pictures of Jack Kirby at his little drawing desk in his house and I was thinking, the imagination of that man pouring out onto that page! And now the incredible artists led by Chloé doing it in cinematic form is amazing. It s bringing the human imagination to life on a personal level and a cosmic level that makes Marvel, I think, what it is.”(Photo by JoJo Whilden / © Columbia Pictures / © Marvel )“There was a time when it looked like Marvel Studios would not be involved in Spider-Man movies going forward for Sony. It was only a few months, but it was an emotional few months…” There was a time when it looked like Marvel Studios would not be involved in Spider-Man movies going forward for Sony. It was only a few months, but it was an emotional few months for, I think, all of us on all sides – and a very public few months, for whatever reason. But yes, I always want to look at the bright side and the bright side was: We got to make two great Spider-Man movies with Amy Pascal and Jon Watts, Tom Rothman, and Tom Holland. And I was very proud of that and very happy at that. Of course [I] wanted it to continue, but always want to be happy with what we have instead of upset with what we don t. Luckily, Tom Rothman and Bob Iger and Alan Horn and Alan Bergman and Tom Holland himself all realized, Wouldn t it just be more fun if we just kept doing it? Let s not get business or politics in the way. Because the deal always started with Amy Pascal and I having nothing to do with numbers or contracts or politics. It had to do with story and a love of Spider-Man and Peter Parker and the Marvel universe. And it thankfully has continued like that. And that s where we find ourselves now. (Photo by © Columbia Pictures)On Venom Joining the MCU: “I wouldn’t dismiss anything.”“I don t want to obviously talk about rumors or speculation on what could happen and what couldn t happen as it relates to any characters that Marvel Studios hasn t brought to the screen yet. But I will say what I ve always said, which is having been with Marvel for 20 years I wouldn t dismiss anything. I wouldn t rule anything out completely. When and how and where remains to be seen. Any rumor that you read online could happen anytime between tomorrow and never.”(Photo by Jay Maidment/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)“It s just exciting to get to see Sam Raimi put his Sam Raimi stamp on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse on Madness.”“I spoke earlier about how everything we do in Marvel Studios is from the point of view of the audience – how do we make the audience feel one way or how do we evoke an emotion out of an audience? I really feel like I learned that from watching Sam Raimi on the Spider-Man movies, where I was just very lucky to be there working for the former head of Marvel Studios, Avi Arad, and just watching: Watching Avi, watching Laura Ziskin, the producer of that, watching Amy Pascal, who ran the studio at the time, and particularly Sam Raimi put those movies together. Now being in a position that Sam is back in the Marvel Universe and working for us on Doctor Strange, which, aside from Spider-man – both Steve Ditko co-creations – was one of his favorite characters, is really quite remarkable and full-circle for me personally from my journey at Marvel. But really, it s just exciting to get to watch Sam work again and to see Sam Raimi put his Sam Raimi stamp on Doctor Strange in Multiverse on Madness. And for people who know what that stamp is, they can be very excited. And for people who don t yet know what that stamp is, I can t wait for them to see this movie, be blown away by it and go, ‘What else has he done?’ And delve into Sam Raimi s filmography, which is one of the best of all time.”(Photo by © Marvel Studios)“The discussions essentially came down to continuing the legacy of Wakanda and continuing with that storyline in a very meaningful, respectful, and yet still hopeful and fun and exciting way, which was difficult after losing Chad.”“The death of Chad [Boseman] had hit all of us extremely hard – and at the same time as it hit the world, because we didn t know either. And there were all sorts of questions, and our first thought for many weeks afterwards had nothing to do with the movie, it had to do with him and his family and his wife and his legacy. And really we were looking to Ryan Coogler for guidance – as one frankly always should about almost everything in life, I d recommend following Ryan Coogler for guidance. The discussions essentially came down to continuing the legacy of Wakanda and continuing with that storyline in a very meaningful, respectful, and yet still hopeful and fun and exciting way, which was difficult after losing Chad. And I will say that Ryan and our producer, Nate Moore, and the entire cast, and our co-writer Joe Robert Cole, have done some remarkable things in the story and the draft. The team is assembling once again and cameras roll in the not-too-distant future on that. And it will be extremely emotional across the board, but I think they have something very special in mind.”(Photo by Jose Perez/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images) Phase Four was always about continuing in new ways and new beginnings; even with films that seemingly are concluding storylines there are new beginnings within them. The definition of phases often evolve with the phase, and often I leave it up to amazing writers and journalists to decide; that s for the film historians to tell us what the phases were about. Truthfully, Phase Four was always about continuing in new ways and new beginnings; even with films that seemingly are concluding storylines there are new beginnings within them. That’s what was most exciting to us about the opportunity to make shows for Disney+, about all of us in Marvel Studios choosing to continue past Endgame and past Far From Home and leaving the Infinity Saga behind to a new beginning. That I think is what people will be looking at Phase Four, I hope, as having accomplished. But, we re in the middle of it now, so it remains to be seen. We don t take our foot off the gas, we don t take anything for granted, and we all work extremely hard to deliver. Black Widow is in theaters and available on Disney+ via Premier Access. Loki is currently streaming on Disney+; the season finale will be available Wednesday July 14, 2021.(Check out part one of our interview with Kevin Feige about Phase Four, in which he breaks down Endgame, WandaVision, Loki, Black Widow, and more.)On an Apple device? This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering titles like The Batman, Fantastic Beasts 3, Jurassic World 3, and Scream 5. [Note: This article has been updated to correct an erroneous role attribution and the implication that Wes Craven is still alive.]This WEEK S TOP STORYTHE BATMAN FINDS ITS ALFRED AND PENGUIN(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)During the period when Jonah Hill was reportedly in talks for a villain role in The Batman (6/25/2021), various reports suggested the role was either that of the Riddler or the Penguin. Within hours of the announcement that Hill was no longer being considered, Paul Dano (Swiss Army Man, Love Mercy) was reported as being in talks to play the Riddler, but the casting of the Penguin remained a mystery for almost a month. In 2003, Colin Farrell costarred in Marvel s Daredevil as the villain Bullseye opposite Ben Affleck, whose departure from The Batman eventually led to the role going to Robert Pattinson instead. Everything came full circle this week as Farrell is now in talks to play the Penguin as the film s third cast villain (alongside Dano and Zoe Kravitz, who will be playing Catwoman). Andy Serkis, who appeared in a couple MCU movies as the vibranium-themed villain Klaw, is also in talks to play Bruce Wayne s butler Alfred Pennyworth. Although three villains might seem like plenty for just one movie, Kevin Smith claimed last month that The Batman will be adapted from the 1996-1997 storyline Batman: The Long Halloween, which also featured Mad Hatter, Poison Ivy, the Scarecrow, and Two-Face, so there may still be more villains yet to be cast.Other Top Headlines1. DUNE SEQUEL ALREADY IN THE WORKS(Photo by Jan Thijs /© Paramount Pictures)Director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario, Blade Runner 2049) is currently working on his adaptation of Dune, the popular science fiction novel by Frank Hebert that was first brought to the big screen by David Lynch in 1984. That movie doesn t come out for another thirteen months (12/18/2020), but Warner Bros. must really like what they ve seen of it so far, as the news came out this week that a screenwriter has already been hired to work on the second Dune movie. That job is going to screenwriter Jon Spaihts, the sole screenwriter credited for 2016 s Passengers, who also co-wrote the Alien prequel Prometheus, Marvel s Doctor Strange, and Villeneuve s first Dune movie. Spaihts had been working for HBO Max as the showrunner of a Dune: The Sisterhood series, but he s stepping down from that responsibility to focus on the second Dune instead. There have been reports in the past that the first new Dune movie will only adapt about half of the eponymous novel, so it may be more accurate to describe the second Dune movie not so much as a sequel as a continuation of the same adaptation (sort of like IT and IT: Chapter Two). Denis Villeneuve s all-star Dune cast includes Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson (as Lady Jessica), and Timothée Chalamet (as Paul Atreides).2. DWAYNE JOHNSON PRODUCING TWO DIFFERENT SPORTS TRUE STORIES (Photo by HBO)Just months after producing and co-starring (as himself) in the professional wrestling true story Fighting with My Family (Certified Fresh at 92%), Dwayne Johnson has attached himself to at least produce two other sports movies based on true stories. The first was announced late last Friday, as Johnson will produce and star in an untitled film about UFC champion Mark Kerr in what is being described as Johnson s first true dramatic role. The announcement was made at a UFC event at Madison Square Garden. Mark Kerr is a two-time UFC champion who was also the subject of a 2003 HBO documentary called The Smashing Machine. The other film Johnson is now producing is Unstoppable (not to be confused with the Denzel Washington/Chris Pine movie about a runaway train), a drama about undefeated three-time All-American college wrestler Anthony Robles, who was born with only one leg.3. CHRIS PINE, ZAC EFRON REPLACE SETH ROGEN IN TWO SEPARATE MOVIES(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)There were enough movie news stories this week to fill two editions of The Weekly Ketchup, mostly because Wednesday marked the beginning of this year s American Film Market, which is where many non-studio movie projects try to find funding and distribution. Two of the higher profile movies this week now have different lead actors after previously being Seth Rogen vehicles. The first is Newsflash, which will depict the events of November 22, 1963 from the perspective of CBS anchorman Walter Cronkite as he broke the news of President John F. Kennedy s assassination to a shocked nation. (The news of Chris Pine replacing Seth Rogen on Newsflash actually first broke in August.) Newsflash will be directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, whose The Current War: Director s Cut (Fresh at 60%) was just released, two years after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September of 2017. Seth Rogen was also replaced this week by Zac Efron in another fact-based drama called King of the Jungle, as a reporter who travels to Belize to interview the controversial anti-virus software innovator John McAfee (a role that also needs to be replaced following the departure of Michael Keaton). Seth Rogen s next film will be An American Pickle, about a factory worker who wakes up in 2019 Brooklyn 100 years after being pickled at a pickle factory.4. JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM CO-STARS RETURN FOR JURASSIC WORLD 3(Photo by Giles Keyte, Jaimie Trueblood ©Universal Pictures)Although the original Jurassic Park is Certified Fresh at 91%, three of the four sequels have been Rotten, including the most recent film, last year s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (48%). Universal Pictures is preparing Jurassic World 3 (A.K.A. Jurassic Park 6, basically) for release on June 11, 2021, with the biggest casting news to date being the impending returns of three of the first movie s stars (Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, and Sam Neill). We now know that two of Fallen Kingdom s stars, namely Justice Smith and Daniella Pineda, will also be returning to co-star alongside Jurasic World s Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.5. TERMINATOR: DARK FATE BOX OFFICE KILLS THE FRANCHISE (Photo by Kerry Brown / © Paramount)In the last 10 years, there have been three different attempts to reboot the Terminator franchise, starting with Terminator: Salvation (Rotten at 33%) in 2009, continuing with Terminator Genisys (Rotten at 27%) in 2015, and this past week s Terminator: Dark Fate (Fresh at 71%). That last Tomatometer is possibly sadly ironic, because the return of James Cameron as producer may have helped raised the Tomatometer score, but the film s box office did not see a corresponding upswing. Instead, the million opening weekend for Terminator: Dark Fate is being reported as a bomb that will likely mean a loss for Paramount Pictures of upwards of 0 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources close to Skydance say there are certainly no plans for another film at this point, and some of the pundits interviewed suggested that a TV series (possibly animated) may be the next step for the Terminator franchise.6. SCREAM FRANCHISE TO BE REBOOTEDAnother franchise that has struggled for Fresh Tomatometer scores following a promising start is Scream, which started with a Certified Fresh 79% and 82% for the first two movies, followed by a Rotten 39% for Scream 3, and a barely Fresh 60% for Scream 4 in 2011. More recently, Scream found new life as a TV show for three seasons, two of which also received Rotten Tomatometer scores from critics. The Scream franchise was always one of the crown jewels of producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein, and like many of their properties, the rights to Scream have new owners following the Weinstein Company s bankruptcy. The new owners are Spyglass Media Group, and Spyglass is now developing a fifth Scream movie, but it s not yet clear whether that film will be a reboot or just another direct sequel. Screenwriter Kevin Williamson, who penned the original Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4, is not expected to be involved with the new movie.7. PARAMOUNT PLANNING 2021 RELEASES FOR PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 7 AND MY LITTLE PONY 2(Photo by ©Paramount Pictures)It s easy to forget this little bit of trivia now, as Marvel Studios is so thoroughly associated with Walt Disney Pictures, but early movies like Iron Man were actually produced for Paramount Pictures. Losing the Marvel movies was arguably one of the biggest setbacks in recent years for Paramount, prompting the studio to look elsewhere for potential franchises, including next year s G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes (10/16/2020), as well as Sonic the Hedgehog (2/14/2020) and Rugrats (1/29/2021). This week, Paramount announced release dates in 2021 for two more sequels, though both follow on the heels of Rotten movies. First, Paramount has scheduled Paranormal Activity 7 for March 19, 2021, which will be coming after three other Rotten Paranormal Activity films (24% in 2012, 39% in 2014, and 14% in 2015). The Tomatometer for My Little Pony: The Movie (Rotten at 48%) was better, but still not Fresh, and Paramount is still scheduling a My Little Pony sequel for September 24, 2021 as well.
Okja director Bong Joon-ho Enters the Race for the Palme d Or with ParasiteJoel MearesWednesday, May 22: Day 10 of the Cannes film festival was an all-the-café conversation focused on who will take home the top prize. Current Palme d’Or frontrunners Portrait of a Girl on Fire, Pain Glory, and Les Misérables got some new competition late Tuesday night with premiere of Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (2019) 98%. The Korean director’s follow-up to 2016’s Okja is an instant critical darling that earned rapturous bursts of applause not just at the end of its critics’ screening, but also in the middle of it, according to Vulture. Jessica Kiang of Variety called Bong’s social thriller Roaringly furious, because [its] target is so deserving…Parasite is a tick fat with the bitter blood of class rage. With just one day of competition films left before the closing night ceremony, most of the pundits agree one of the favorites above will walk away with the top prize – well unless Tarantino can pull off a shocker with Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. No voice for Sharon Tate? Tarantino and Robbie push back.Wednesday, May 22: The buzz and spectacle of the Once Upon A Time in Hollywood premiere undoubtedly stole some attention away from Parasite’s impressive debut: two days after the fictionalized retelling of the Manson Family murders debuted, it s still dominating the festival headlines. Reports broke late on Tuesday night that hundreds of ticket holders were turned away from the premiere; as some had paid as much as ,200 to secure one ticket to the starry event, and many members of the press were among those turned away, the festival was forced to issue an apology for the mixup. Then Wednesday afternoon Tarantino continued to make headlines during a press conference when he rejected the hypothesis of a question that said Margot Robbie had limited dialogue portraying the Manson Family murder victim, Sharon Tate. The Aussie actress, however, was quick to counter the assumption saying,  I think the moments I was on screen gave a moment to honor Sharon, I think the tragedy was the loss of innocence. To show the wonderful sides of her could be done without speaking. I did feel like I got a lot of time to explore the character without dialogue, which is an interesting thing. Rarely do I get an opportunity to spend so much time on my own as a character. (Photo by Daniele Venturelli/WireImage)Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Gets Six-Minute Standing Ovation, But Tarantino Doesn t Want to Know the Tomatometer ScoreTuesday, May 21: The moment that all of Cannes – and just about everyone else – had been waiting for finally arrived on Monday night, when Quentin Tarantino premiered his ninth studio film, Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie. Before the curtains parted for the screening of the Hollywood drama that s loosely based on the Manson Family s murder of Sharon Tate and others, Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux reiterated (in English and French) Tarantino s plea to avoid spoilers when discussing the film. It s debatable if such precautions were needed, but as of yet, most critics are keeping the key plot points out of reviews. Angeleno Tarantino was six years old when the Manson Murders rocked Hollywood and the nation, and critics are calling Once Upon A Time in Hollywood a deeply personal and violent ode to the summer of 69. While 1960s Hollywood played out on the screen, today s Hollywood looked: Timothée Chalamet, Chloe Sevigny, Diego Luna, Xavier Dolan, Tilda Swinton, Dakota and Elle Fanning, Chris Tucker, and Adrien Brody were all spotted at the premiere. Tarantino s close friend and Grindhouse co-director Robert Rodriguez was also on hand to congratulate and celebrate with cast and crew and gave us his one-word review: Outstanding! After enjoying a six-minute standing ovation at the premiere, Pitt, DiCaprio, and Tarantino headed to a glitzy after-party at the JW Marriott joined by most of the star power on the Rivera. During the party, Tarantino chatted with guests about film, Cannes memories, and was in high spirits. When we caught up with him, we asked if he wanted to know the Tomatometer score for the film (which we had just revealed), and he quickly recoiled as if we were about to shout a spoiler to his film. Oh God, no! he said, laughing.  If they re bad I wanna enjoy my night, and if they re good, it s a gift. A gift I will happily unwrap – tomorrow. Tarantino Asks Viewers Not to Spoil the Hollywood EndgameMonday, May 20: Everyone is worried about spoilers these days – even legendary director Quentin Tarantino. After a script for The Hateful Eight leaked before production began, forcing the director to make significant changes, Tarantino is taking no chances with his latest film. Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%, the A-lister–stuffed 60s period feature starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Margot Robbie, premieres Tuesday and has been shrouded in mystery. Little is known of the plot, save that it will feature numerous late 60 s icons such as Bruce Lee, Steve McQueen, Sharon Tate, and her infamous murderer Charles Manson. Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes to promote his film The Mustang earlier in the year, costar Bruce Dern said, “All I can say is — this is me telling you — he’s a magician, because in this movie, he did something mad. It’s probably the most unique endeavor I’ve seen a director undertake and do. Without ruining the movie for you — I can’t tell you what that is, but the minute you get to see it, you will say, ‘Bruce Dern is absolutely right. ” Hoping to keep the movie s surprises under wraps as long as possible, Tarantino posted an open letter asking those that see it first to be mindful of spoilers, adding, The cast and crew have worked so hard to create something original, and I only ask that everyone avoids revealing anything that would prevent later audiences from experiencing the film in the same way. Rotten Tomatoes has secured a coveted ticket to the glamorous premiere, so check back here on Tuesday for the first reviews and a detailed recounting of the star-studded premiere and afterparty.Check out Everything We Know About Once Upon a Time In Hollywood

Rotten Returns: Underwater Struggles For Air, Becomes Second Horror Flop of 2020(Photo by © Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. )Underwater finished production in 2017 and is just now making its appearance in theaters. Amongst all the new wide launches this weekend, it finished last with a paltry million. The production, with a budget reported to be anywhere between million and million, is the latest in a string of disappointments for Fox, including the 0 million Certified Fresh animated feature Spies in Disguise (which just crossed 5 million worldwide), Ad Astra, and even Ford v Ferrari, which even with over 1 million globally is still chasing its own large budget. The studio has only had one film (the faith-based Breakthrough) enter profit status in its theatrical run since 2018’s mega-hit Bohemian Rhapsody.Underwater, which was reasonably well reviewed – it s at 53% on the Tomatometer – marks a second misfire for a Kristen Stewart vehicle after November’s Charlie’s Angels, and is the second week in a row during which horror audiences mostly ignored one of its own. Sony’s The Grudge dropped straight out of the top 10 in its second week, falling 69% to .5 million for a total of just .9 million. That puts its word-of-mouth multiple in line with other attempted reboots like Conan the Barbarian, Blair Witch, Rings, last year’s Hellboy and, again, Charlie’s Angels, though its budget loss is not nearly as large as the one Underwater is looking at.The Top 10 and Beyond: Rise of Skywalker Near  Billion, Just Mercy Doing Just OK For NowHere we are on Day 24 of The Rise of Skywalker and with 8.16 million it is now the ninth-highest–grossing film ever in that period domestically, just ahead of Rogue One’s 7.36 million. However, that order may change quickly as Rogue had a .06 million fourth weekend on the first January weekend of 2017; ROS comes in with just million, which is also less than the .11 million of The Dark Knight and the .20 million of 2019’s The Lion King in the same frame. That suggests a final gross coming in around the 0 million range, possibly a full 0 million less than The Last Jedi made. While the numbers may pale compared to its recent Star Wars predecessors (sans Solo, of course), this week Rise is going to become just the 15th film ever to gross a half-billion domestically and the 46th film to gross over billion worldwide. The film that has just beaten The Last Jedi on the all-time global box office chart is Disney’s Frozen II. It has now earned .371 billion, passing Episode VIII as well as the final Harry Potter film and Black Panther to become the 11th-highest–grossing film of all time. It needs just .5 million to enter the top 10. Also still chugging along is Jumanji: The Next Level, with another million this weekend bringing its 31-day total to 7 million, the 10th-best for a December release in that timeframe. It has grossed 2 million worldwide. Doing well for Sony too is Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, also on the eve of what should be several Oscar nominations. The film may be neck-and-neck with the 2014 version of the musical Annie after 19 days (.7 million), but that film had a big drop-off after the holidays and stalled with just .9 million. Little Women will get an Oscar bump this week that should propel it to 0-plus million. The two other newbies ran neck-and-neck over the weekend. The expansion of Destin Daniel Cretton’s Just Mercy netted an OK million in 2,375 theaters, which is more than Uncut Gems made in its third-week expansion (.57 million in 2,348 theaters). Uncut Gems may have dropped out of the top 10 already, but it is only about million away from becoming A24’s top domestic grosser ever, replacing Lady Bird’s .95 million. Mercy was also beaten by the Tiffany Haddish/Rose Byrne comedy, Like a Boss, which also opened to an estimated million, a not-so-great start for the million production from Paramount. The film has a current Tomatometer score of 22%. Ending on a positive note, we turn to the ongoing strength of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, which is over 5 million worldwide and is going to pass Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time In Hollywood domestically this week to become the second-highest–grossing original film of 2019 behind Jordan Peele s Us.This Time Last Year: The Upside Lands First Big Surprise of 2019One of the big surprises of 2019 opened at number 1 on this weekend. The Upside, which STX Films acquired from the Weinstein Company, started with .35 million on its journey to over 8 million. A Dog’s Way Home finished third with .25 million, and one of the worst-reviewed films of the year, the delayed Keanu Reeves sci-fi cloning thriller, Replicas, opened in 13th with just .37 million. Rounding out the top five were Aquaman in second with .35 million, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in fourth with .05 million, and Escape Room in fifth with .92 million. Mary Poppins Returns crossed 0 million in sixth place. The top 10 films grossed .77 million and averaged 69.4% on the Tomatometer; this year’s top 10 grossed an estimated 6.8 million and averaged 71.5% with critics. On the Vine: Bad Boys and Dolittle Set For a ShowdownTwo big event films are looking to take the box office back from the leftovers of 2019. The smart money is on Bad Boys for Life, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reuniting for the first time since 2003, only without Michael Bay at the helm. Then, Universal is hoping to avoid another disastrous special effects-laden animal movie in less than a month; if Dolittle can open to more than what Cats has grossed to date (.35 million) that will at least be something. But it will have a lot more to recoup given its inflated 5 million budget and we could be looking at the first big disappointment of 2020.The Full Top 10: January 10-121917 (2019) 89% – .5 million (.22 million total)Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) 52% – .06 million (8.17 million total)Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) 71% – million (7.12 million total)Like a Boss (2020) 21% – million ( million total)Just Mercy (2019) 85% – million (.44 million total)Little Women (2019) 95% – .66 million (.03 million total)Underwater (2020) 47% – million ( million total)Frozen II (2019) 78% – .76 million (9.49 million total)Knives Out (2019) 97% – .73 million (9.62 million total)Spies in Disguise (2019) 77% – .11 million (.62 million total)
