This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as The Accountant 2, The Color Purple, Megalopolis, Salem s Lot.This WEEK S TOP STORYDISNEY IS ALREADY DEVELOPING ANOTHER JUNGLE CRUISE(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)This past summer, as both the Delta variant and day-and-date streaming strategies impacted the box office of several films, it s perhaps easy not to notice that films like Free Guy (Certified Fresh at 81%) and Jungle Cruise (Fresh at 62%), which did have free streaming competition, fared relatively well. Disney s Jungle Cruise, for example, despite all of its obstacles, has still managed to earn 0 million domestic, which, with everything else going on, is good enough that Walt Disney Pictures is indeed moving forward with plans for a sequel. Both Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are expected to return (sequel options were probably already in their contracts), as are director Jaume Collet-Serra and co-writer Michael Green, who is officially the first creative back to work on the sequel. What Disney is not disclosing just yet is what the sequel could be about, or where it could be set (another river, or something else?). Disney certainly has plenty of other popular theme park attractions that could be adapted to fit the Jungle Cruise format with the same cast, such as say, Disney s Animal Kingdom. Among the projects Dwayne Johnson has coming soon are Netflix s Red Notice, the animated movie DC League of Super-Pets (5/20/2022), and the DC Comics adaptation Black Adam (7/29/2022), also directed by Jauime Collet-Serra.Other Top Headlines1. FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA MAY FINALLY GET HIS MEGALOPOLIS DREAM PROJECT MADE(Photo by ©Sony Pictures Classics)Many films take years to get made, while some are abandoned altogether. One of the projects with the longest film development phase is Megalopolis, which Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now) first started back in the 1980s (yes, nearly 40 years ago). Coppola s difficulty in getting Megalopolis going is especially noteworthy considering his status as a successful film producer, but the ambition and budget is usually cited as the biggest obstacle to the film getting greenlit (as well as similarities to the events of 9/11). Now 82 years old, Coppola has decided to throw his own money behind finally getting Megalopolis produced. The ambitious sci-fi epic about a futuristic city architect may have an impressive cast as well, as the actors Coppola has reportedly met with include Oscar Isaac, Cate Blanchett, Forest Whitaker, James Caan, Jessica Lange, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jon Voight, and Zendaya (and there will reportedly be many other roles for big names). Francis Ford Coppola reportedly has new liquidity with which to fund Megalopolis because of the recent sale of his Sonoma vineyards.2. POP STAR H.E.R. TO MAKE FEATURE ACTING DEBUT IN THE COLOR PURPLE REMAKE (Photo by Paras Griffin/Getty Images)The two actresses that left the biggest impressions in Steven Spielberg s original adaptation of the Alice Walker novel The Color Purple (Fresh at 81%) were probably Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, but the film does have several strong female roles. Warner Bros. is currently well into pre-production on a big-screen adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical (adapted from Walker s novel). Blitz Bazaule (Black is King) is directing and currently casting up, but the only name we knew before this week was Corey Hawkins (In the Heights), who will play Harpo. The second cast member announced is four-time Grammy-winning singer and songwriter H.E.R., who will be playing Squeak, the meek wife of Hawkins character (played by Rae Dawn Chong in the first film). Major roles yet to be cast include Celie (Whoopi Goldberg in the first film), Sofia (Oprah Winfrey), Shug Avery (Margaret Avery), and Mister (Danny Glover). Warner Bros. has already scheduled The Color Purple for release on December 20, 2023.3. SIGOURNEY WEAVER TO BE PAUL SCHRADER S MASTER GARDENER (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)For some Martin Scorsese fans, Paul Schrader may always be best known as the screenwriter behind early Scorsese successes like Taxi Driver (Certified Fresh at  96%) and Raging Bull (Certified Fresh at 93%), but Schrader has stayed busy as a writer and director. He found success in 2017 with the Ethan Hawke priest drama First Reformed (Certified Fresh at 93%) and his film The Card Counter, starring Oscar Isaac and Tiffany Haddish, started its festival circuit run at Venice this week. With all that going on, Schrader is already quickly moving onto his next film, a thriller called Master Gardener. Joel Edgerton will play the title character, who works on the estate of a wealthy woman played by Sigourney Weaver, who requests he take on her troubled great niece as an apprentice, which upends his life, threatening to draw him back to his violent past. The role of the niece has apparently not been cast yet.4. CAPTAIN MARVEL CO-STAR LASHANA LYNCH JOINS HISTORICAL EPIC THE WOMAN KING (Photo by David M. Benett/Getty Images)Last summer, The Weekly Ketchup reported that Viola Davis was set to team up with director Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love and Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees) for the historical epic The Woman King, about the leader of an all-woman military branch of the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries in Africa (in what is now Benin). The film appears closer to getting its greenlight from TriStar Pictures, as this week, Captain Marvel co-star Lashana Lynch also joined the cast of The Woman King. Davis will play the general in charge, with Lynch playing a charming veteran warrior, and relative newcomer Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad) playing an ambitious recruit. 5. STEPHEN KING S SALEM S LOT FINALLY GETTING ITS FEATURE FILM ADAPTATION (Photo by Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Adaptations of Stephen King novels and short stories became so ubiquitous in the 1980s that it s almost hard to believe that before The Shining (Certified Fresh at 84%) came out in 1980, Carrie (Certified Fresh at 93%) was the only movie adapted from a Stephen King novel. That may have led to the strange circumstance in which King s second horror novel, the deconstruction of the vampire myth Salem s Lot, was adapted not as a movie but as a TV mini-series. There have been other versions of  Salem s Lot on TV since, but we re just now finally getting a Salem s Lot feature film. The film is quickly casting up this week, with three announcements in a row, starting with Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, and Spencer Treat Clark. Lewis Pullman (TV s Catch-22) was then announced as the film s lead, as an author who is basically Stephen King s stand-in. Then, most recently, Alfre Woodard also signed on for the doctor role (who was a male in the novel), who is sort of the Dr. Van Helsing of the story.6. JOHN MALKOVICH LEADS INDIE HORROR FILM CUCKOO (Photo by Aaron Epstein/©Netflix)NEON is an indie distributor that since 2017 has given us such films as Colossal (Certified Fresh at 81%), Ingrid Goes West (Certified Fresh at 86%), I Tonya (Certified Fresh at 90%), Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Certified Fresh at 98%), and the Academy Award Best Picture winner Parasite (Certified Fresh at 98%), among others. A few of those indicate that NEON tends to favor darkly humorous films, but this week, their new project Cuckoo is described as a straightforward horror film, suggesting something in the vein of A24 movies like Midsommar and The Witch. The premise is being kept basically secret, but we do know that the leads will be John Malkovich and Hunter Schafer (HBO s Euphoria), with Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Gemma Chan (Marvel s upcoming Eternals) apparently in supporting roles.7. WARNER BROS. DID THE BOX OFFICE MATH AND MOVES FORWARD WITH THE ACCOUNTANT 2 (Photo by ©Warner bros.)After having a critical and box office hit with David Fincher s Gone Girl (Certified Fresh at 87%) in 2014, Ben Affleck s film output hit sort of a rough patch starting in 2016 that included both his Justice League movies and his non-Batman roles like The Accountant (Rotten at 52%) and Live by Night (Rotten at 34%). Despite that Tomatometer score, The Accountant did earn 5 million worldwide from a relatively modest budget of million, which was apparently good enough for Warner Bros. to give the go-ahead for a sequel. Gavin O Connor (who also directed Affleck in The Way Back) confirmed this week that Warner Bros. has officially started development on a sequel to The Accountant. Jon Bernthal s role is described as being more significant, though it s worth noting that neither Affleck nor Bernthal are signed for the sequel as of yet. At the same time, O Connor clarified that there will not be a Way Back sequel, but we are doing an Accountant sequel. 8. NO, NO, NOT THE BEES: JASON STATHAM ALL ABUZZ ABOUT THE BEE KEEPER (Photo by Warner Bros.)Since reinventing his screen persona with Taken, Liam Neeson has essentially created a new genre of action films that could easily be defined as Liam Neeson as insert-profession-here , such as Cold Pursuit (Liam Neeson as a snow plow driver) and The Ice Road (Liam Neeson as an ice road trucker). This story is actually about a new Jason Statham movie, but the idea behind it sounds like one of those Neeson projects, because it s Jason Statham as The Bee Keeper. The premise is being kept secret, but it s described as a lightning-paced thriller deeply steeped in the mythology of bee keeping. Yes, really. One has to wonder if Statham saw the Nicolas Cage remake of The Wicker Man (Rotten at 15%), and thought, yes, that, but it s me kicking ass and making bee puns. We should see what all the buzz is about in 2023 or so.9. THIS WEEK IN JASON STATHAM PART 2: THE EXPENDABLES 4 RECRUITS MEGAN FOX, 50 CENT, AND TONY JAA (Photo by Phil Bray/©Lionsgate)One of the appeals of an ensemble-dependent action franchise like The Expendables is that each new film introduces new stars (keeping in mind that the first film itself had over a dozen of them). The Expendables 2 (Fresh at 67%) brought in Chuck Norris, Liam Hemsworth, and Jean-Claude Van Damme, while The Expendables 3 (Rotten at 32%) added Antonio Banderas, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, and Wesley Snipes. There will be at least 8 years between The Expendables 3 in 2014 and whenever The Expendables 4 comes out (probably 2022 or 2023), but the fourth one is indeed happening. The new cast members will include Megan Fox (Transformers), rapper-turned-actor 50 Cent, and  Tony Jaa, and they ll be joined by Expendables alumni Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture. It s unclear if there will be other new cast members who haven t yet been announced. The Expendables 4 will be directed by stuntman-turned-director Scott Waugh (Act of Valor, Need for Speed). On an Apple device? We also included classic sitcoms that remain some of the best examples of the genre, like The Jeffersons, 227, Living Single, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Moesha, and Martin. The list, produced in conjunction with our corporate chapter of the Black Employee Network, also includes critically-hailed dramas, like When They See Us, The Chi, and British titles Luther and Top Boy. There are titles from celebrated creators (Donald Glover s Atlanta, Steve McQueen s Small Axe film anthology, and Michaela Coel s I May Destroy You); award-show standouts (Watchmen, Euphoria, and Pose); and shows with seasons that are Certified Fresh at 100% (David Makes Man, A Black Lady Sketch Show, and P-Valley).While you ve probably seen many of the excellent titles on this list, there s no time like the present to start another binge or to make room on your streaming queue for a show you haven t discovered yet.Be sure to also catch some of the new premieres coming in February, including The Equalizer, starring Queen Latifah; Young Rock, based on the early days of action superstar Dwayne Johnson; Kenan Thompson s new NBC comedy, Kenan; FX docuseries Hip Hop Uncovered; and Netflix drama Ginny Georgia and reality series Buried by the Bernards.Related: Black History Month TV Calendar 2021We ll add more to this list as new shows become bingeable. (Photo by Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection)All Harry Potter Movies Ranked by TomatometerThe Harry Potter film franchise ruled the box office for a decade, but it also managed the uncommon feat of earning Certified Fresh status for every single one of its installments. It remains one of the most successful movie sagas of all time, and it’s even spawned a spinoff series. But while the first Fantastic Beasts continue the Certified Fresh streak, the second became the first Rotten entry in this cinematic Wizarding World. As theaters prepare for a third film in 2021, we re ranking all Harry Potter movies by Tomatometer!

0.33.7 8月喜迎ecs think is marketable,” Rodriguez says, adding that this means they have to have original series because they learned “early on” that options from mainstream outlets were limiting. And while they do have name-recognizable content like the original Queer as Folk and Gay of Thrones, the popular Funny or Die webseries from Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness, Rodriguez and Daniels point to other titles in their catalogue like the drag-themed docu-series, Queens of Kings, and Before I Got Famous. That web series stars Xingcheng You, a Chinese immigrant who is both looking for love and his big break in Hollywood, and focuses on stereotypes that still exist in the gay dating culture. For A/V Club Enthusiasts: Rooster TeethRooster Teeth was launched in 2003 by some friends who wanted to be the next Quentin Tarantino or Kevin Smith, but couldn’t get into festivals. Co-founder Bernie Burns told journalists at the summer 2018 Television Critics Association press tour that their service took off when “we discovered and pioneered a method of animation where we could use the 3D gaming engines in popular video games to make animation.” This led to what he touts as the longest-running digital series ever, the military-themed sci-fi comedy Red vs. Blue. They also have reality series, live-action shorts, and more. For Cult Classic Connoisseurs: Shout! FactoryWho needs reboots when you can have the classics? The TV vertical of this digitized tribute to old-school charm has everything from cult classics like Mystery Science Theater 3000 (85% Tomatometer) to relics from the years of rabbit ears like Father Knows Best and Car 54, Where Are You?. There’s also original programming like Why We Love It, a web series that strives to justify users’ love for programming of acquired taste like Rowan Atkinson’s Mr. Bean and the Nicolas Cage–Jennifer Beals campfest Vampire’s Kiss (61% TM). Gene Pao, Shout! Factory’s Senior Vice President of Digital Media, says that, “over the years we’ve found that viewers are particularly interested in ‘modernized nostalgia’ — cult and classic TV and film that shape today’s pop culture.” Shout! plays into this with marathon viewings like MST3K Turkey Day on Thanksgiving, during which Pao says “viewers can interact with each other via chat.”For Horror Buffs: ShudderThis AMC-owned streaming service celebrates the worlds of gore and supernatural. And while it doesn’t have its parent company’s juggernaut, The Walking Dead, its TV section does live up to its promise of offering “a constant stream of killer content.” Titles include AMC s adaptation of author Joe Hill s NOS4A2 (70% Tomatometer), and the documentary series Robert Kirkman’s Secret History of Comics as well as original programming like its anthology, Neil Gaiman s Likely Stories, and a partnering TWD’s Greg Nicotero on a revamp of the classic Creepshow. Shudder general manager Craig Engler says “we can do shows that other people can’t” because they aren’t as beholden to ratings. For Indie Aficionados: Sundance NowA SVOD companion to SundanceTV, General Manager Jan Diedrichsen told journalists at the winter 2018 TCA press tour that the goal of both is to find a way to “best serve fans of premium indie content in a deeper way.” This service is the home for original programming like This Close (100% Tomatometer), a rom-com of sorts about two best friends and their relationship woes that’s based on series of shorts from the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. There are also series that originated on its linear channel counterpart, like the Joanne Froggatt–Ioan Gruffudd thriller Liar (62% Tomatometer) and other fine options. For Francophiles: TV5monde (and others)(Photo by TV5monde US)Grab the macarons and red wine! This Paris-based network offers a way to watch popular French series with the aid of subtitles (and without the need of a passport). Streaming is available through Sling, and programs include the 2019 rom-com hit Un si grand soleil, which centers on family and friends in Marseille, and the police detective drama Caïn.For BET Fans Craving More: Urban Movie ChannelDespite its title, UMC actually has a rather robust TV section as well. These include episodes of WE tv’s long-running reality series, Growing Up Hip Hop. Original series include the drama 5th Ward, which is based on director Greg Carter s similarly named movie. “We pay very close attention to viewership trends and feedback from our subscribers to understand what’s working and what’s not and use that as a guide for greenlight decisions on any new or classic series,” UMC General Manager Sylvia George says, adding that their primary target audience is black women. “At a high level, the type of programming that resonates with UMC viewers ranges from romantic dramas and comedies to female-driven stories to series that push the envelope in a compelling and relatable way.”For Cinephiles: Criterion ChannelAfter the November 2018 death of FilmStruck, several other streaming options clamored to become the rightful heir to the cinephile throne, and the Criterion Collection’s streaming component is quickly rising up that rank. In addition to celebrating classic and cult cinema from around the world, the channel also has special features like behind-the-scenes footage and a guest programmer series. If Criterion isn’t to your liking, other streamers that concentrate on classic and/or under-the-radar cinema include SnagFilms and MUBI. Services like Kanopy and Hoopla have similar offerings and work in conjunction with local libraries. For Those Who Love The Great White Way: BroadwayHDLots of theater fans would like to give regular regards to Broadway, but not all of them can take regular pilgrimages to New York City (or afford the ticket prices once they’re there). In those instances, there’s BroadwayHD. The service, which Tony Award-winning producers Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley founded in 2015, offers full-length stage plays and musicals at legal and considerably much better quality than those grainy videos you can find on YouTube. Productions have included musicals like 42nd Street, Falsettos, She Loves Me, and Cats, as well as renditions of Shakespeare. For When You Want Some Badass Cinema: Brown SugarSometimes you need to see some foxy ladies in tight pants kicking perps to the curb. And, for that, Brown Sugar offers Blaxploitation classics like Coffy (plus, send-ups of the horror genre like Blackenstein). But there are also more recent and — dare we say — more wholesome offerings too, like the Al Green concert Everything’s Gonna Be All Right and the family-friendly A Baby for Christmas. For Those Who Want Just The Facts: DocsvilleThere’s more to documentaries than Netflix’s latest true-crime obsession or brilliantly shot nature footage narrated by David Attenborough. This SVOD option is a warehouse of some thought-provoking visual storytelling from around the world that covers everything from Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work, a look at the legacy of the controversial yet influential comedian, to a nearly three-minute short on the privilege of having a toilet. For similar options, perhaps with more of a science bent, there’s CuriosityStream. For The Warm and Fuzzies: Hallmark Movies NowSometimes you may want a cup of hot chocolate and the chance to see perfectly lit people in winter wonderlands — even if it’s July. The Hallmark Movies Now option has an assortment of its holiday-themed classics as well as movies about weddings, beach-side flings, and other scenarios that result in emotionally charged embraces. There are television series and specials that include adaptation of biblical stories and classic novels. If HMN options feel too mainstream, there are also OTTs that specialize in Christian-themed programming like Pure Flix and Dove Channel (that would be a reference to the bird, not to shampoo and body wash). For Mainlining Martial Arts: Hi-YahDescribed as “the sound of mayhem, of flying fists and roundhouse kicks” on its website, this service — which is available for a fee as an add-on to Amazon and though Roku and other devices — is a warehouse of martial arts favorites. And that definition is a loose one. The service also has horror films, thrillers, period pieces, and more that also happen to showcase people who can destroy you while barely breaking a sweat. For Supporters of Public Broadcasting: PBS Video AppFrom Poldark and PBS NewsHour to Ken Burns documentaries and Call the Midwife, there s probably something educational and/or entertaining to find on PBS video app. Or just turn it on for some background music; there are also recordings of Great Performances and Austin City Limits shows. For Live Music Without Dealing with LiveNation: QelloConcerts are great ways to celebrate your favorite artists with peers who appreciate them as much as you do. They’re also loud, expensive and usually hassles to get to. For those who can’t (or won’t) handle all that grunt work, there’s Qello. This service lets you watch concerts and documentary footage on demand, be it Paul McCartney or Beyoncé. But its greatest asset might be that it helps cure a nostalgic hunger for artists whom we are no longer able to watch perform, such as Tom Petty or David Bowie.
(Photo by Niko Tavernise / © Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)20 Movies To Watch If You Loved JokerJoker: The highest-grossing R-rated movie ever at over billion in worldwide box office, and also the most nominated movie at the 2020 Oscars. Not bad for a comic-book flick from the man who gave us three Hangovers. If you re looking for more movies like Joker, the obvious place to start would be its direct influences: The Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese psychotic joints, Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. Throw in 90s Cape Fear for a full triumvirate. As you re undoubtedly aware, Joker was not universally beloved by critics as far as Joaquin Phoenix vigilantism flicks go (though those who loved it, loved it). For that, turn to Lynne Ramsay s Certified Fresh You Were Never Really Here, where Phoenix plays a fearless hired gun who tracks down missing girls at any cost. And if you like your lawless justice even grubbier, go with the Charles Bronson action classic Death Wish, or the churning slow burn of Sam Peckinpah s Straw Dogs.Beyond Scorsese, Joker director Todd Phillips has cited post-Vietnam War 70s cinema in general as an influence, and that decade had no shortage of man-against-the-system stories. Look upon One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, Dog Day Afternoon, and Network for proof.Network also serves (and so does Dog Day honestly) as an indictment of media, a major and pervasive presence in Joker. Nightcrawler, Natural Born Killers, and Christine (not the one about the scary car) are the ones to watch if that s where your interest in Joker lies.Or if you re just interested in seeing psychotic breakdowns, or breakdowns of psychosis, the medium of movies have long been a playground for the disturbed. American Psycho, Entertainment, and One Hour Photo go for the jugular, while The Vanishing, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and Man Bites Dog truly try to get under your skin with their clinical explorations of madness.Of course, Joker is still a story torn from the pages of DC Comics and in that vein we recommend checking out Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. It s got Mark Hamill reprising his signature villain role, animated at his most intensely violent. (Ah, if only The Killing Joke adaptation were good!)And as for our suggestion of UHF, Weird Al Yankovic s foray into film spoofery Imagine a world where Arthur Fleck actually achieved success in his professional ambitions. What would that look like? We think it d be a little zany, a little weird, a little something like what the clown prince of music offers in his 1989 cult classic.
(Photo by Everett Collection, Imaginal Disc and Labocine, and Touchstone Television)Four years ago, Rosa Parra wasn’t nearly as well-versed in film history as she is now. She’d just seen Wonder Woman, which sparked her interest in – now a love for – cinematic spectacles and women’s representation on- and off-screen. That was the launchpad for Parra’s film education and career in criticism – and her star just keeps rising.Parra’s passion is palpable. She’s driven not just by a love of visual storytelling, but by a desire to uplift Latinx stories. She started out writing movie reviews on a site she ran herself. In 2020, she co-founded the Latinx Lens podcast with her co-host Catherine Gonzales, where the two discuss history, icons, and recent releases. She’s also earning a bachelor’s in Film and Media Studies from Arizona State University. And that’s all on top of her day job as a lab technician. (In addition to her love of movies, she’s a self-identified “science person.”)“Everything I do with writing and preparing for podcasting, I do it after work,” Parra told Rotten Tomatoes. She dedicates her work commute and weekends to learning about film, too – sometimes with her kids, who she lovingly calls her “movie buddies.”“Having to balance it all is not easy, but if you are determined and you plan out, literally to the last minute of the day that you re awake – like, I have five minutes to do this in the morning – it s doable.”Rosa Parra is the co-host and co-founder of the Latinx Lens podcast. Find Rosa on Twitter: @rosasreviews.Have you returned to theaters? What was the first film you saw? Yes, I did. The day they opened! I had to go in there and watch something that deserved to be watched on the big screen, so I went in and watched Tenet. Man, that was an incredible experience.Do you have a favorite snack while you re watching movies?Ooh. I would probably say nachos. I love nachos. Are you pro- or anti-note-taking when you re reviewing?I will if I m at home because I have the ability to pause the film and actually take notes, and try to analyze what I just watched. If I m in the theater, I probably won t, because I don t want to miss anything that I m seeing.Do you read other people s reviews before you write your own?No, I try to do my own thing before reading someone else s thoughts. What is your favorite release of 2021 so far?So far, my favorite movie of the year is Identifying Features. It s a Mexican film that follows a mother who is seeking the whereabouts of her son who decides to cross the border and come to the United States. But then she doesn’t hear from him, so she takes it upon herself to go in search of him. It’s a smaller independent film, but it s so moving, it s so touching, and it s so riveting that it’s haunted me since I watched it.And actually, not that long ago, I watched Pig… I was like, oh, it might become my favorite of the year. But just by a little bit – by thin a margin, like a hair – it didn t make it. It s my number two, but Identifying Features still holds my top spot. What makes a good movie? It s going to differ from people to people. Because at the end of the day, film is subjective. It s an art. What I think is good, other people might not. It is a subjective medium. To me, a good movie is one that leaves me thinking about it hours, days, after I ve seen it – a movie that s re-watchable… But also that makes me feel something, whether it s sadness or it takes me back to my childhood, any childhood memories, or just makes me cry, or just overwhelms me with any form of emotion. I think that s certainly my definition of a good movie.

The Best Action Movies of 2019What is the state of the action movie in 2019? You could say they ve never been stronger: They generate all the hype and they break all the records – we just call them superhero movies these days. But for this guide to the best action movies of 2019, we stick with a more pure strain of action filmmaking, whose lineage you can trace back to the 80s and early 90s heyday. It s a world of tough guys (Shaft) and tougher women (Anna), of martial artists (Shadow), vigilantes (Miss Bala), and assassins (John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum). In deciding what qualifies as an action movie, we not only left those newfangled superhero movies to mingle with their own crowd, but the same went for genre hybrids like Alita: Battle Angel, which will go into the best sci-fi movies of 2019 list, launching next week.
There’s something so exciting about the arrival of a new voice on the movie scene. Sure, we love to see the veterans and masters do their thing, but it’s that adrenaline rush that comes with discovery and potential that really drives a lot of film lovers. When we see an amazing debut, we not only appreciate it on its own, but we can imagine all the great movies to come from people like Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig, Ryan Coogler, and Ari Aster. It’s a glimpse of the future. This list of some of the greatest directorial debuts of the 2010s offers a vision of the future of filmmaking that’s diverse, ambitious, daring, and brilliant. We chose the directors based on Tomatometer scores, the impact of their work (awards, box office, general adulation), and, in many cases, the work they would go on to make after their debut or the projects they have teed up. Names like Barry Jenkins and Damien Chazelle may seem like omissions, but they actually had films released pre-2010; other names, like this year s Phillip Youmans, who made his Certified Fresh debut while still in high school, arguably deserved a place, but we kept to a strict 30 slots. It could have been a much, much longer list.Without further ado or caveat, here are 30 incredible directing debuts from the last decade. We may be looking back, but it’s because we’re so excited about what’s ahead.Derek Cianfrance: Blue Valentine (2010) 86%(Photo by Davi Russo/©The Weinstein Company/courtesy Everett Collection)When he was barely more than a teenager, Derek Cianfrance wrote and directed a small project called Brother Tied that didn’t get a theatrical release, so most consider this 2010 drama his debut. And what a debut! It helps to have two of the best actors of their generation delivering at the top of their game, which is what Cianfrance got from Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling as a couple whom we watch disintegrate in front of our eyes. Both were nominated for Golden Globes and Cianfrance would go on to work with Gosling again in 2012’s Certified Fresh The Place Beyond the Pines.Ava DuVernay: I Will Follow (2010) 82%(Photo by ©AFFRM/Courtesy Everett Collection)Given how much she would go on to accomplish with acclaimed works like Selma, 13th, and When They See Us – not to mention as a producer and mentor – it’s almost hard to believe that Ava DuVernay’s directorial debut came just this decade. The former publicist turned heads with this independent drama about a woman (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) forced to take care of a sick aunt (Beverly Todd). Shot in only 11 days on a shoestring budget, it’s easy to see the talent that would turn DuVernay into a household name over the next 10 years.Dee Rees: Pariah (2011) 95% (Photo by Focus Features/ Everett Collection)Long before her Oscar-nominated Mudbound, Dee Rees wrote and directed this 2011 Sundance gem, a film about a young woman dealing with her emerging homosexuality. Adepero Oduye stars as Alike, a 17-year-old who becomes more comfortable with her lesbian identity, even as she faces pushback from her family and community. It’s a tender, honest film that only makes one wish that Rees would work more often – it was six years between Sundance premieres for the filmmaker.J.C. Chandor: Margin Call (2011) 87% (Photo by Jojo Whilden/©Roadside Attractions/courtesy Everett Collection)Sometimes a great new director is announced with a small, intimate cast – sometimes it’s with a ridiculous ensemble that includes more than one Oscar winner. J.C. Chandor was blessed enough to find himself directing Jeremy Irons, Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Stanley Tucci, Demi Moore, Zachary Quinto, and more in this riveting look at the beginning of the financial crisis that was still fresh in investors’ minds when the film was released in 2011. Chandor used this well-received film as a launchpad and directed three other Fresh films before the decade was over – All is Lost, A Most Violent Year, and Triple Frontier.Benh Zeitlin: Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) 86% (Photo by Fox Searchlight./Courtesy Everett Collection)Most Sundance veterans will tell you that they remember specific world premieres, one of them being the 2012 launch of Beasts of the Southern Wild, a heartfelt, poetic look at childhood that would go on to land Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director. (It would also gift us with an incredible on-camera talent in Quvenzhané Wallis.) There’s something transcendent about this film, which announced a major new talent who took way too long to make a follow-up. The good news is that Zeitlin finally has finally done that: Wendy will also have its world premiere at Sundance in January 2020, and it will likely be the hottest ticket of the festival.Drew Goddard: The Cabin in the Woods (2011) 92% (Photo by Diyah Pera/©Lionsgate)Fans of Drew Goddard s writing on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lost weren’t too shocked to discover he could also write and direct a kick-ass movie too, but even they were a little blown away by this modern horror classic. Subverting the tropes of most scary stories about beautiful people in remote cabins, Goddard’s directorial debut was a much-needed jolt of genre adrenaline at a time when audiences weren’t really taking horror movies all that seriously. He would go on to write The Martian and write and direct another subversive puzzle film, 2018’s Bad Times at the El Royale.Lorene Scafaria: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) 55% (Photo by Darren Michaels/©Focus Features/Courtesy Everett Collection)Before she gave the world Hustlers, Lorene Scafaria wrote and directed this quirky comedy starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley in what’s basically a pre-apocalyptic buddy movie. When it’s announced that an asteroid is going to hit the planet, Carell’s sad sack goes on a road trip with his neighbor to find the true love of his life before it’s too late. Scafaria proved adept at directing performers, a skill further deployed in 2015’s The Meddler and 2019 s Hustlers, which is starting to rack up awards this season.Joshua Oppenheimer: The Act of Killing (2012) 95% (Photo by ©Drafthouse Films/courtesy Everett Collection)After producing films in Indonesia in the 2000s, Joshua Oppenheimer decided to make his first feature documentary about the open wound in that country, namely the mass genocide that took place from 1965 to 1966, the perpetrators of which were never brought to justice. His masterstroke is in allowing the violent war criminals to reenact their own crimes, using the power of the camera against them. The final scenes, in which one of the leaders of the death squad finally comes to terms with his own sinful past, are unforgettable. Don’t miss the companion film, The Look of Silence.Ryan Coogler: Fruitvale Station (2013) 94% (Photo by ©Weinstein Company/courtesy Everett Collection)Few directors have made as much of an impact in a relatively small amount of time as Ryan Coogler, who has directed three films and has yet to notch a Tomatometer score under 94%. Everyone on Earth knows about Creed and Black Panther, but his debut was back in 2013 with Fruitvale Station, the true story of the tragic murder of Oscar Grant, a young man killed by a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) officer in 2009. It was also the first major film role for Michael B. Jordan, who would go on to star in all of Coogler’s films. Their relationship seems likely to produce quality through the next decade and beyond.Andy Muschietti: Mama (2013) 63% (Photo by George Kraychyk/©Universal Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)The life of Argentinian filmmaker Andres Muschietti changed forever when Guillermo del Toro saw a three-minute short he made with his sister called Mama he would go on to develop it into a feature under the eye of del Toro. Jessica Chastain gives a fearless performance as a woman trying to deal with two children found in the woods, protected by a supernatural entity known only as Mama. Muschietti proved he had enough of a gift with atmosphere here that WB tapped him to direct two of the biggest horror movies of the decade in the It flicks. And it all started with the right person seeing just a few minutes of film.Jennifer Kent: The Babadook (2014) 98% (Photo by ©IFC Midnight/Courtesy Everett Collection)Australian writer-director Jennifer Kent shook Park City and then the rest of the world in 2014, when she dropped her fable of parental grief and fear in the amazing The Babadook. Adapting her own short film, Monster, Kent directed Essie Davis in the story of a single mother trying to deal with the sudden loss of her husband while raising a troublesome child. Oh, and there’s a horrible creature in the basement too. (Or is there?) The wave of highbrow horror that ended the 2010s likely doesn’t crest as high without The Babadook, a masterpiece of tension that weaves relatable emotions into a ghost story and felt like an instant classic the first time we saw it. Kent followed it with this year s Certified Fresh The Nightingale.Justin Simien: Dear White People (2014) 91%(Photo by ©Roadside Attractions/courtesy Everett Collection)Don’t take just our word for it: Sundance named Justin Simien a “Breakthrough Talent” by giving him a special award after the world premiere of his brilliant 2014 dramedy about life on a black campus in the 2010s. Tessa Thompson plays Samantha White, a student at Winchester University, a mostly white school. Simien uses White to branch off and introduce us to a fascinating ensemble of players, instantly becoming one of the most interesting young voices in cinema on modern issues of race and class. He adapted the film into an acclaimed Netflix series – all three seasons are Certified Fresh – and has finally directed a follow-up that will premiere at Sundance 2020, Bad Hair.Ana Lily Amirpour: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) 96% (Photo by ©Kino Lorber/Courtesy Everett Collection)What do most of these breakthrough debuts have in common? They announce distinct new voices. No one else on Earth could have made A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, a black-and-white “Iranian Vampire Spaghetti Western.” It’s not like we get one of those movies every weekend at the multiplex. The minute Ana Lily Amirpour landed on the scene, we knew that her voice was going to be her own, something proven further by The Bad Batch, her even crazier follow-up. Love or hate her films, they aren’t like anything else.Dan Gilroy: Nightcrawler (2014) 95% (Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/©Open Road Films/Courtesy Everett Collection)It’s actually less common than you think for successful screenwriters to segue smoothly into the director’s chair, as the two roles sometimes take different skill sets. It turns out that it wasn’t a problem for Dan Gilroy, who may be an even better director than he was a writer, as proven by this 2014 award-winner that stars Jake Gyllenhaal as an L.A.-based man who gets hooked on getting raw and often bloody footage for local news. Gilroy directed Gyllenhaal to one of the best performances of his career in a film that feels just as timely now as it did five years ago.Alex Garland: Ex Machina (2015) 92% (Photo by ©A24/Courtesy Everett Collection)Alex Garland wasn’t your typical newcomer when he dropped his 2014 directorial debut. After all, he had been a regular collaborator with Danny Boyle as the writer on 28 Days Later… and Sunshine, and even dabbled in video game writing. And yet Ex Machina still felt like an introduction to a major new talent. The story of a man who develops a doomed relationship with a daring new form of A.I. was so well-received that Garland landed an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. And there are people who will tell you that his follow-up, 2018 s Certified Fresh Annihilation, was even better.László Nemes: Son of Saul (2015) 96% (Photo by ©Sony Pictures Classics/Courtesy Everett Collection)Hungarian director László Nemes proved that there are still stories to tell about the Holocaust with this terrifying vision of life in Auschwitz near the end of World War II. Géza Röhrig plays Saul, a man deeply numbed by the horror of what he’s had to do as a Sonderkommando, the Jewish prisoners who were forced to assist the SS. When he becomes determined to give a murdered child a proper burial, Son of Saul becomes a story of purpose in a place designed to crush the human spirit. With impeccable sound design and a visual style that puts viewers in Saul’s shoes, this was a debut admired around the world, all the way to an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.Marielle Heller: The Diary of a Teenage Girl (2015) 95% (Photo by Sam Emerson /© Sony Pictures Classics / courtesy Everett Collection)Marielle Heller has been so successful this decade that it’s hard to believe that her debut was only four years ago. Since then she’s directed two films with Tomatometer scores above 95% in Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. She’s

The series will mix real-life entertainment figures and events with its fictional protagonists. Neslon Franklin, Sarah Ramos, Eric Lange, Peta Sergeant, and Jeremy Shamos will recur in the series.20,000 Petition Netflix to Cancel Good Omens — Which Streams on AmazonIn a fun moment on the internet this week, The Guardian reported that 20,000 people signed a petition that calls for Netflix to cancel Neil Gaiman s heavenly comedy Good Omens, which stars Michael Sheen as angel Aziraphale and David Tennant as demon Crowley, who are trying to stop the Apocalypse. The program focuses on the Union of Justice, a group of superheroes who began working together in the 1930s, but lived well into the 21st century and now face the prospect of handing their work off to their children; a second generation of various talents, constitutions, and interests.Although some of its iconography will seem familiar, the story sets out to be a family drama of powers, resentments, high expectations, and at least one masterplan worthy of a Lex Luthor or Hydra. And viewers coming fresh to the series will find a number of unexpected things.Rotten Tomatoes spoke to some of the cast and Jupiter’s Legacy co-creator Mark Millar to determine the five things you need to know before venturing into the show.1. It Is a Generational Saga(Photo by Netflix)The notion of generational superheroes – that is, parent and child (or a close relation) sharing abilities and a costumed identity – is not exactly a new idea in comic books. Titles like Starman and The Flash dived deep into the idea in the 1990s. Also, the more recent Flash TV series broached the topic a few years ago while still fighting a villain of the year, and Superman Lois sees Clark learning how to be there for his teenage sons. But in the case of Jupiter’s Legacy, facing the reality that a younger generation needs to step up is very much the theme of the show.“[It’s] a metaphor for how you can pass on traditions, how you can pass on family values, how you can pass on love and connection,” as star Josh Duhmel, who plays the premiere hero Utopian, put it. “I think that there s a lot to be said for how you raise your kids and how important it is to connect with them or there s a good chance you lose them.”Indeed, the possibility of losing his children quickly becomes one of Utopian’s concerns.(Photo by Marni Grossman/Netflix)As the program begins, his son Brandon Sampson (Andrew Horton) – aka Paragon – makes a choice Utopian disapproves of, setting into motion a lot of soul searching among the Union and their children about what they really want for the future.“I think Brandon puts an enormous amount of pressure upon himself, which definitely doesn t help things,” Horton said when asked about Utopian’s expectations for his son. Brandon and [his sister] Chloe are told by their father that these gifts are to help other people less fortunate. That s an onus on them to use their powers for good and to maybe follow in their parents footsteps. But it s never explicitly said within the show that this is what you must do: You must be the same as us.' Nevertheless, Brandon takes onboard the idea that he should be just like his father and “trips himself up because he s a more flawed human being.”In Horton’s mind, he s kind of always going to be set up for failure when you ve got the Utopian as someone to follow. And to some extent, that fear of failure leads to the choices his sister Chloe (Elena Kampouris) and their cousins make both before the story begins and after Brandon s tactical error.2. It Uses the Concept of the Justice League as Familiar Grounding(Photo by Netflix)Although the original members of the Union have similar abilities, aspects of their look and more specialized powers will remind viewers of DC Comics’ Justice League of America. According to Millar, using that group’s dynamic over, say, the Avengers, is a completely intentional choice.“That s a perfect entry point for the mainstream audience,” he explained. “Those kinds of characters we grew up with also stretch all the way back 5,000 years to the Greek myths and then, really, the Egyptian myths, [and] in some ways go back to Sumer as well, 11,000 years ago — Babylonian myths.”The archetypal stature means a character like Utopian is immediately recognizable even if he has longish white hair and a beard when he first arrives on the scene.“The world is very, very plugged in to the idea of [this] bunch of people: You know, there s a Superman-like guy, there s a Wonder Woman–like woman, in the same way we had Zeus and Jupiter and we had Aphrodite and everything,” Millar said. “These archetypes have been around for a long time, in a way that other superheroes don t really have. There s a pantheon of gods that the Justice League really feels like [and] that people get.”Of course, testing those archetypes via their children becomes one of the key sources of tension within Jupiter’s Legacy.3. It Challenges a Very Specific Code of Superhero Conduct(Photo by Netflix)Taking their cues from pop culture antecedents like the Justice League, the first generation Union members adhere to a strict code Sheldon Sampson (Utopian s civilian name) put down during their founding nearly a century before the story begins: their powers must always be used to help others, they must never govern over the nation, and they do not kill. The code is rooted in Millar’s appreciate of the American culture he grew up experiencing via imported television, film, and music, but it also sets down three easy-to-understand concepts that, nonetheless, lead to a lot of heartache when one must live by them.Duhamel, as himself, admitted he has some issues with the code, but absolutely agrees with his character that super-powered people should not use their powers to force a role in government.“If you give somebody [that] much power, that s just dangerous. They should just be there to serve,” he said.Nevertheless, the prohibition against killing left Duhamel with more angst because he can see situations where lethal force is understandable. One hypothetical he offered will strike a chord with parents: “If somebody is going to take my son out, I m going to take them out first, no matter what.”Conversations with the writers and producers put him more at ease with Sheldon’s absolutely belief that there is always a better way and, as viewers will see, Sheldon always adheres to the code.(Photo by Marni Grossman/Netflix)Mike Wade, who plays original Union member Fitz Small (aka The Flare), thinks his character’s appreciation of the code changes across the 60 or so years he operates as a superhero.“Fitz, I would say, sees Sheldon as an older brother; somebody that Fitz looks up to. A lot of people look up to Sheldon, he explained. So initially, Fitz felt that [same way about the code as Sheldon], but through battle and through sacrifice, [he] might ve changed and might not feel so strongly about the code like a lot of other people do.”Tenika Davis plays Fitz’s daughter Petra – the new Flare – and represents the younger generation on the issue.“Things like the code have to be amended and changed as things develop and grow,” Davis said. “I think the code is one of those things that is a bit outdated. So we respect it for the foundation it provided, but at the same time we re like, Yeah, it probably needs a few updates.' (Photo by Steve Wilkie/Netflix)And, as viewers will see, there is no easy answer on how to respect the code or augment it to meet the challenges both generations of the Union face in the series.“I think it s such a complex issue,” Leslie Bibb added. Bibb plays Grace Sampson, a hero in her own right — the beloved Lady Liberty — and Utopian’s wife. While both the actress and her character see the code as a way of preventing the supers from becoming judge, jury, and executioner, they also understand why some of the younger generation will chafe against it as they face more powerful and ruthless adversaries.“I don t think it s black and white. I think that that s sort of what Grace s dilemma is [as the story unfolds],” she said. “I think that is a cool thing about the show. It doesn t really give you an answer. It poses these questions and hopefully, you walk away and you start thinking, and maybe it starts a conversation about something bigger.”4. It Is Not Ashamed of Superhero Costumes(Photo by Steve Wilkie/Netflix)Another cool thing about the show: it literally wears the pulpy inspiration of the 1930s and ’40s superheroes on its sleeves. Sure, the younger generation may go for the black leather look of modern heroes, but the original Union members proudly wear garish colors into the 21st century.“When I think about my favorite costume ever, costume design ever, in a movie, I would say it s [from the] 1978 Superman,” Millar said. The suit, designed by Yvonne Blake, highlighted the design worn by the Man of Steel in the comics during the 30 years prior to the film. “She didn t really rethink it. She just thought, ‘What does Superman look like?’ and just made that work in real life. We did the same with this, we made it look like the heroes of that period. So the Golden Age heroes would have looked weird if they d had armor or oddly textured, metallic costumes, he said. They just look like superheroes in the very traditional sense, which I love. Nevertheless, the costumes may look strange to viewers as the program begins, but remember: the first generation Union members still represent a 1930s ideal of superheroes.5. It Will Surprise Readers of the Comic Book(Photo by Netflix)While the series is quite faithful to the comics – and its companion piece, Jupiter’s Circle – it will contain a few surprising changes as it unfolds across its eight episodes. But even before those developments transpire, readers may find they like Sheldon’s brother Walter (Ben Daniels) a lot more than they did in the comics.Although Daniels denied any conscious attempt to bring viewers to the character s side, he definitely wanted to convey “what it was like to have Clint Eastwood as your brother, who sails through life when you find it incredibly difficult.”In both the comic book and the show, Walter tends to be the first to naysay Sheldon – even after they get their powers – but as Daniels saw it, “He feels very downtrodden. He s a highly volatile person and highly sensitive person, and he has trouble regulating those emotions.”And though much of his anxiety melts away after his powers give him an almost universal telepathic range, the scars of his younger days remain.“I don t think it s about making him sympathetic. I think it s about making his actions 100 years later more understandable,” he added.
