NOTE: The free episode is available until 11:59pm Thursday May 23. Check out the full first episode of DC Universe s misfit superhero series Doom Patrol. It will be available on Rotten Tomatoes for a full week ahead of Doom Patrol s season finale.About the Series: Doom Patrol is a re-imagining of DC s most beloved group of outcast superheroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl, and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities — but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence — and to protect Earth from what they find. Part support group, part superhero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Picking up after the events of Titans, Doom Patrol will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with a warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same.Starring: Diane Guerrero as Crazy JaneApril Bowlby as Rita Farr / Elasti-WomanJoivan Wade as Victor Stone / CyborgAlan Tudyk as Mr. NobodyMatt Bomer as Larry Trainor / Voice of Negative ManBrendan Fraser as Cliff Steele / Voice of RobotmanTimothy Dalton as Niles Caulder / The ChiefRiley Shanahan as Robot Man (on-set performer)Matthew Zuk as Negative Man (on-set performer)Doom Patrol’s remaining episodes are available to stream on DC Universe. the way I to give my all.I got really lucky. I didn t want to be disturbed. It s such a difficult part that once I caught him, I didn t want to let him go. I know myself. I m almost 40; I know if I start to get relaxed too much, I m getting out of my character, and then to get back in, it s hard.Rotten Tomatoes: You obviously take your work very seriously, and you ve been able to work with a wide variety of filmmakers from all kinds of backgrounds across different genres to build a really eclectic resume. But you ve also expressed in the past that there are some Hollywood directors you d love to work with. If you had to name the top three on your wish list, who would they be?Rahim: Of course, Martin Scorsese. Paul Thomas Anderson. Who else? There s so many great directors. I d say [Alejandro González] Iñárritu. You know what? from the new generation, definitely the Safdie brothers.Rotten Tomatoes: I could absolutely see you in a Safdie brothers movie.Rahim: You know, Good Time was a beautiful surprise. I was like, Oh, man! You can feel the New Hollywood references, but it s not copying. It s not about that. They re talking about their time, the people they met, their life, their New York, and it s incredible. It reminded me of New Hollywood, without copying them. I found it so clever and so brand new, in a way, in the way they shot, in the way they direct their actors, and the last film they did, Uncut Gems, the last 13 minutes It s like a James Brown concert. South Korean survival drama Squid Game has assembled a massive fan base since it premiered September 17 on Netflix. Starting with 456 competitors in dire financial straits, the bloody and suspenseful series finds an increasingly smaller number of them competing in deadly takes on traditional children s games in the hopes of being the one left standing to collect the grand prize of 45.6 billion won (or nearly million).Gore aside, the nine-episode series has caught on because it s so easy to see how these characters wound up in the situation. Lee Jung-jae plays Seong Gi-Hun, a gambling addict who enters the game at number 456 in the hopes of settling his debts and repairing his relationship with his daughter. Jung Ho-Yeon plays Kang Sae-byeok (or Number 067), a North Korean defector hoping to win so that she can pay a broker to find and retrieve her family. But the show s survival-of-the-fittest plot also resonates because it is a favorite theme in pop culture. We ve rounded up 10 other film and TV titles that are worth watching once you survive Squid Game.
(Photo by Netflix)Move over, “Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?” The internet’s hottest new debate is about the Netflix movie that launched a thousand memes, Bird Box.The thriller stars Sandra Bullock as a woman tasked with ushering a pair of young, cherubic children over the river and through the woods. The catch? They’re blindfolded the whole time to protect themselves against supernatural entities that cause your death if you see them.In addition to inspiring people around the world to blindfold themselves and grievously injure their bodies in the name of memes — Netflix had to issue a warning against participating in the “Bird Box Challenge” because it is 2019 and we’re all doin’ it for the gram, even if it’ll cause us to trip over furniture and give ourselves massive bruises — the film has also sparked serious debate about whether or not it is actually a good movie.Just search “Bird Box” on Twitter to find the extremely divided discourse. It’s an argument that has spread to the Rotten Tomatoes staff, too, with some passionately pro and some vehemently against the film as a whole. In fact, we got so heated about it that we’ve outlined the two main arguments below. The Tomatometer is split: The movie is sitting at 62%.Help us settle another movie debate: Is Bird Box a suspenseful masterpiece, or just a boring, two-hour-long setup for memes? Below, we present an argument representing each side of the debate from a passionate RT staffer, but it’s up to you to make the call. Read on and vote below!Yes, Bird Box Is A Terrifying, Claustrophobic Masterpiece(Photo by Netflix)There’s a reason we’re entering 2019 with scraped knees and black eyes: Bird Box challenge! And there’s a reason we’re covering our eyes like fools and navigating the twists and turns of our own homes: Bird Box! Susanne Bier’s masterful little shocker is every bit as good as A Quiet Place — there, we said it — a suspense flick with a masterful conceit, killer set pieces, and something to say. What elevates Bird Box, however, are the performances: Sandra Bullock is incredibly compelling as the tough Malorie (“Boy! Girl!”) while John Malkovich keeps things tense in the house with big globs of smarmy menace. Also, Bird Box has just confirmed that Trevante Rhodes, whom many of us first met in Moonlight, is a superstar in the making (and that bod, though). The true measure of a horror flick is whether it sticks in the memory, if its disturbing imagery and spine-shattering scares linger. And by that measure — at least, going by the Internet — Bird Box is a classic. No, Bird Box is an Overrated, Scare-Free Mess(Photo by Netflix)There’s a reason we entered 2019 scratching our heads and going, “huh?” The Internet had been hijacked by a new Netflix flick called Bird Box and frankly, we just didn’t get it. Because… Bird Box is actually terrible. Full respect to director Susanne Bier, who’s done some really great stuff in the past, but the movie feels like it was made by someone wearing a blindfold. There’s almost zero suspense — how did they manage to botch even the scene with the car sensors! — and the central threat is about as menacing as The Happening’s threatening vegetation. When anything like tension starts to creep in, we’re suddenly back on the river for cinema’s most tedious white water rafting adventure. And don’t get us started on Bullock’s post-apocalyptic hair and makeup — impeccable and totally confounding. The only thing scary about Bird Box is the strong likelihood of a sequel.

None of them have Rotten Tomatometer scores – and they all made over 0 million. In fact, when averaged together, these 10 Fresh blockbusters – Toy Story 3, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Guardians of the Galaxy, Jurassic World, Finding Dory, Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, Black Panther, and Avengers: Endgame – have a super-Fresh Tomatometer average of 90.3%.Currently, the highest domestic (and worldwide) grossing film of 2019 is the 94% Tomatometer-rated Avengers: Endgame,  which has earned a mind-snapping total of 8 million domestically and over billion worldwide. By crossing the billion milestone, Avengers: Endgame has joined Titanic, Avatar, Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Infinity War in the exclusive “ Billion Club.” What do these movies have in common? Yep, you guessed it again: They’re all Fresh.Recommended: The 50 Highest-Grossing Movies of All TimeRecommended: All 44 Billion-Dollar Movies, Ranked by TomatometerRecommended: 2019 Holiday Box Office PreviewThe success of these Fresh films got us thinking: Are these blockbuster movies Fresh anomalies, or do Fresh movies make more money at the box office generally? Is there a relationship between Tomatometer score and box office performance? (And we stress: a relationship, and not necessarily a causal one; so many factors contribute to box office performance.) To aid us in our data deep dive, we pulled the Tomatometer and domestic box office data for the 1,404 movies that received wide theatrical domestic releases (600-plus screens) since 2010. Here’s what we found…*The box office results have been adjusted for inflation. All calculations accurate as of November 28, 2019.MOVIES WITH FRESH TOMATOMETER SCORES MAKE MORE MONEY THAN ROTTEN MOVIES – ON AVERAGE(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Marel Studios)Fresh Movies since 2010: Inflated Domestic Average of 4 millionRotten Movies since 2010: Inflated Domestic Average of millionWhen it comes to Tomatometer and domestic box office results, Fresh movies, on average, make more money than Rotten movies. It may sound obvious – good films draw more people to the theater! – and you are probably thinking, “I could’ve told you that,” but the difference is quite startling. The 1 million average for the 636 Fresh movies in the sample is nearly double the million average of the 799 Rotten films. Even if you removed Disney brands Marvel and Pixar, which produce some of the most critically beloved blockbusters, such as Black Panther, Toy Story 4, and Avengers: Endgame, the average for Fresh films since 2010 is still a respectable million.THE FRESHER THE MOVIE, THE BIGGER THE BOX OFFICE BOUNTYIt’s also worth noting that the more Fresh a movie is, the better it is likely to do at the box office, and the more Rotten it is, the worse it is likely to perform. Movies with a 0-20% Tomatometer score had an average domestic box office of million; movies with 80-100% Tomatometer scores averaged 3 million. However, not every Fresh movie makes money: 58 of the 187 (or 42%) wide-release movies that made under million at the box office since 2010 are Fresh. A Fresh rating doesn’t guarantee massive success, and Fresh movies like Green Room and The Raid 2 don’t automatically collect 0 million dollars domestically.MOVIES WITH HIGHER TOMATOMETER SCORES HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF CLEARING 0 MILLION(Photo by © Warner Bros. Pictures)Some 323 movies have made over 0 million at the domestic box office since 2010. Of those, 219 (68%) have Fresh Tomatometer scores, which means the odds of a movie making more than 0 million increase when it receives a Fresh Tomatometer score. Only 5% of movies with a 0-10% Tomatometer score (or 3 of the 62 movies) – namely Grown Ups 2, The Last Airbender, and Little Fockers – made over 0 million. On the other hand, 41% of the movies with a score above 90% (or 68 of the 164 movies) – such as Spy, Girl’s Trip, and Crazy Rich Asians – cleared the 0 million milestone. That 41% may not seem like a lot, but it’s a big jump over the movies in the 70-80% range, where 33% of the movies broke 0 million.Below is a breakdown of Tomatometer ranges and the average amount of money the movies in them make.0-10% Movies: million10-20% Movies: million20-30% Movies: million30-40% Movies: million40-50% Movies: million50-60% Movies: million60-70% Movies: million70-80% Movies: 0 million80-90% Movies: million90-100% Movies: 2 million
The latest on Gotham’s final season, Cameron Monaghan opens up about his return to Shameless, Marvel TV boss shares intel, a Lost reboot tops ABC chief s wishlist, and more TV news.TOP STORYWho Plays Batman in Gotham’s Finale?Young Bruce Wayne s transition into the Batman is almost complete, and reporters at Fox s Gotham panel at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Los Angeles were treated to a sizzle reel including the first look at the series caped crusader in his final form. But is that star David Mazouz under the cowl? Yes and no, executive producer John Stephens said. While it s Mazouz s face you ll see and voice you ll hear, it wasn t physically him in the suit — simply because the suit was made to fit someone with a 6 4 frame. The series will see a 10-year flash-forward before it ends, when we ll see older versions of other Batman characters (rather than the developing versions Gotham has portrayed over the years). Camren Bicondova confirmed that a fully realized version of Catwoman will appear in the finale, along with full-on versions of Penguin and Riddler. As for the Joker, it s still up in the air.Producers have refused to confirm whether Cameron Monaghan s character will be the joker, but Stephens teased, If he’s not the Joker, then he’s someone who provides the origin story for who becomes the Joker. Another flash-forward tidbit: Ed and Oswald are still friends in the future. As Robin Lord Taylor (a.k.a. Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin) said, Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. That s the dance between the two of them. Will ABC Get Lost Again?(Photo by Mario Perez/ABC/Courtesy Everett Collection)“We have to go back,” Jack famously pleaded to Kate on Lost. But does ABC have any interest in revisiting its seminal mystery series? Yes, I would like [a reboot] very much. That is a reboot I would be interested in seeing,” new ABC boss Karey Burke told reporters when asked whether she was planning to bring back the show. But unfortunately, it’s only a personal wish from a Lost superfan.Burke, just two months into her position as ABC Entertainment president, included the “we have to go back” scene in a clip reel for reporters demonstrating the types of shows she hopes to bring to ABC in her time at the network. It was not an indication of any actual plans to reboot Lost. It s literally at this point just what I dream about when I go to bed at night, she told The Hollywood Reporter. I have not spoken to [exec producers] Carlton [Cuse] or J.J. [Abrams] or ABC Studios about it. But I do often get asked the question what show would I reboot and often my answer is Lost — sometimes Alias. Nothing to report yet. Maybe ever. But it would be a fun thing to have a conversation about. Cameron Monaghan Explains His Shameless Return(Photo by Paul Sarkis/SHOWTIME)Fans were shocked when Cameron Monaghan exited Showtime s Shameless halfway through the series ninth season. But when the network announced the series renewal for a tenth season — without star Emmy Rossum, who departs at the end of season 9 — it revealed that Monaghan s Ian Gallagher would be returning to the series. The actor told Rotten Tomatoes and a small group of reporters that his decision to leave (and subsequently to come back) was a nexus of creativity and business. While he wanted to step away for creative and business reasons, after a chat with showrunner John Wells about Ian s future he decided to come back. We got to a place both creatively and financially where I felt comfortable coming back, and much of that had to do with what we were going to do with the story, he revealed. While the season hasn t been written yet, he hopes Ian will focus on himself in season 10. I think it s interesting that he worked his way up, got his life on track, and then completely wrecked it, unfortunately — and some of that wasn t even fully his fault, Monaghan said. But I think that seeing him learn to lead the family, take care of himself, and be on the straight and narrow and how to work with that would be a very interesting arc for him, so I d like to see something outside of just him searching and being single and hooking up with people, that kind of stuff. As for the loss of Rossum, Monaghan emphasized that the series, about a struggling Chicago family, is an ensemble show. And because of that, over the course of the last five to six years, characters have grown up and really branched out and the stories had become very separate. It was very rare that I would get the privilege of acting with Emmy anymore; it’s just one of those things. We’re going to lose that thread and that’s a loss for us, but that being said, I feel like we have enough other characters and storylines across the board that they can absorb and it won’t feel like too much of a change to the overall fabric of the show. Marvel Isn’t Looking for the Next Jessica JonesThe third and final season of FX’s Legion is debuting this year, and most of Marvel’s Netflix series have been retired. But in building up its TV library again – perhaps on new streaming service Disney+ – Marvel is not looking to repeat anything that’s been done before.“We aren’t looking for the next Jessica Jones. There is a Jessica Jones. So it’s being able to keep telling different stories,” Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb told reporters on Legion’s final season TCA panel on Monday. “And if you’re a comic book fan, it actually is something that you really understand because comic book fans know that each comic has a different writer, has a different tone, has a different artistry, has a different look. So it’s usually not that case if you’re running a studio, but that’s what we try to do.”Loeb hopes that his studio has created an atmosphere in which showrunners feel that they have creative freedom to tell many different stories. Lauren Shuler Donner, Legion executive producer and a main driving force behind the X-Men franchise, said she and her colleagues want to make sure each X-Men story feels different and creative too.“After the first three X-Men, I started to get worried that people would get tired of the X-Men and feel like, ‘I’ve seen this before.’ So when we entered into X-Men: First Class, Matthew Vaughn approached it as a Bond movie,” she said. “So we tried to change the tone in every movie. Obviously, Logan is a Western, and Deadpool is a crazy comedy, and Gambit was going to be a heist and now rom-com, and New Mutants a horror film.”When Noah Hawley approached her with his take on Legion – which he described as the “dissection of a villain, “I thought, ‘OK. That is, then, good. Then we’re away from the X-Men movies. We’re not going to have a repeat, and this is going to be something very different,’” she said. “And that, I believe, is the only way to sustain continuing X-Men and Marvel properties. They must be unique and different every single time, or they’ll step on each other.”Party of Five Takes on 2019(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)Freeform has officially ordered a rebooted version of ’90s drama Party of Five. Instead of the Salinger kids, whose parents were killed in a car accident with a drunk driver, the new series will follow the Acostas, whose parents are deported.“This show is about grief in a slightly different way, because what is lost is not gone forever,” executive producer and original co-creator Chris Keyser told reporters at TCA.The series will tackle the current immigration debate head-on, which gives the show an advantage because “it’s real. It’s happening every day,” executive producer and original co-creator Amy Lippman said. Additionally, the new version’s added layer will include the parents struggling to care for their children from a distance.Ultimately, Lippman said, “It’s our intention to make it different, and yet at the same time, there are moments almost like Easter eggs. There’s a scene in the pilot that was a scene in the original Party of Five pilot 25 years ago. There’s enough for our fans of long ago to see echoes of the original series.”But will any original cast members show up? Perhaps in the future, but “not yet,” Lippman teased.

Last week we were all easing back into a brief period of seeming normalcy with Warner Bros. finally launching Christopher Nolan’s Tenet stateside. We were also still hedging our bets and putting kid gloves on while reporting what, if anything, the movie s numbers meant about the state of moviegoing. This column has offered its own vision on how to look at them in the short term, but the studios are once again starting to look at the long game King of the Crop: Tenet Takes In .7 Million, But Calculating What That Means Is a Nolan-esque Mindbender(Photo by © Warner Bros.)Warner Bros. was choosing not to release daily breakdowns on the Tenet numbers and for the second week in a row adopted the strategy of only releasing estimated totals for the film on Sunday morning. Based on reporting last week, we had a number of .2 million, which would have been a pretty on-target expected haul for the first (one-time-expected) blockbuster released since March, given what we had seen out of Unhinged and The New Mutants. However, further reporting revealed that the weekend number may have been more in the vicinity of just million, with the rest of that .2 million coming from previews going back to the previous Monday. We knew some of the haul had come from earlier days last week, but may not have expected only 60% of that .2 million to have come over the four-day holiday. That brings us to this weekend.According to the studio, Tenet led the box office this weekend with .7 million. That would be a 66.9% drop from the initially reported .2 million. However, if we look at the guesstimated breakdown to million, that would be just a 44.2%. Except for the fact that Warner Bros. is saying that Tenet dropped just 29% this weekend, which by most accounts is a very solid hold bringing its domestic total to .5 million. But if that is true that means the three-day weekend haul last week was more between million and million, with the additional money being made on the Monday holiday. That is less than half of what the average expectations were for Nolan’s film s opening weekend, which is why rumors began to surface on the eve of the Dune trailer launch that WB was going to be pushing back Wonder Woman 1984 from its October 2 slot; on Friday, they did just that, pushing the superhero flick to December 25, 2020.(Photo by George Kraychyk / © TriStar Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection)Universal was the next to act, moving its Candyman remake into sometime in 2021. That leaves Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile and Sony’s animated Lord and Miller production, Connected, opening on October 23, as the next major studio releases on the schedule. On the semi-bright side, Tenet is up to 7 million worldwide, surpassing WB’s Birds of Prey (1 million) for fifth place on the decimated 2020 chart, behind Bad Boys for Life, The Eight Hundred, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Dolittle. The only new release of the week was The Broken Hearts Gallery. Sony decided to adopt the WB method and kept its numbers from the record until this morning: the movie made .1 million in 2,204 theaters. That’s a 9 per-theater-average. Even if we apply our rule of 2.5-to-3x for the multiple, that would mean the movie would be on track to earn .75-to-.3 million total in normal times. Or, to put it in September release terms, a number between what was earned by last year’s The Goldfinch and 1988’s Moon Over Parador.Last week, Mulan grossed a reported .5 million from more than 1.1 homes with its $US29.99 Premium On Demand release on Disney+. This weekend, it made another .2 million opening in China for an international gross of .6 million. (That comes with a blackout on local press covering the film there due to several controversies.) Also last week, the column suggested The New Mutants was headed for a final tally between .9 million and .3 million; its total this weekend stands at .3 million. Unhinged is not putting up big numbers, but they are a little better when compared against the August releases we had it in league last week. With .8 million total, it just outgrossed 2014’s Sin City: A Dame to Die For. So that’s…something. On This Weekend s Dates In Box Office History (Photo by © Pixar, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)With so little action in our current-day box office, we re casting our eyes back this week.September 11: Five years ago, Pixar’s Inside Out surpassed 0 million with 3,530 on its 85th day of release. At the time it was the second-highest–grossing film for the animation company behind just Toy Story 3. Since then, Finding Dory, Incredibles 2, and Toy Story 4 have all surpassed it. Fifteen years ago, in 2005, Wedding Crashers passed 0 million on its 59th day of release with 8,000, making it the sixth-highest–grossing “R”-rated film ever at the time.September 12: In 2015, Marvel’s Ant-Man made it to 5 million, grossing 1,713 on day 58. Back in 1993, In the Line of Fire reached 0 million on its 66th day of release, with 8,164. Fifteen years later, Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder grossed .21 million to cross 0 million on its 31st day of release. A year later, Quentin Tarantino would accomplish the same feat with Inglourious Basterds, doing it by grossing .78 million on just its 23rd day in theaters.September 13: Day 44 of release for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy was a momentous one: it grossed .9 million to pass 0 million. It took 93 days and another 8,547 for How To Train Your Dragon 2 to reach 5 million. Stephen King’s It only took six days to gross 0 million when it made .9 million on this day in 2017. Then we have a quartet of 0 million passers. American Pie did it in 1999 on its 67th day with ,625; Step Brothers crossed the line on day 51 with 0,687; and Disney’s Freaky Friday remake made it with .01 million on day 39. But it was this day in 2002 that was part of one of the most historic runs in box office history: With .05 million, My Big Fat Greek Wedding made it to 0 million on its 148th day of release. What Should Have Been This WeekendThis was to be the weekend of the latest film in The Conjuring universe. The James Wan-less The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It was going to be battling A Quiet Place Part II for number 1 at the box office when that film initially moved from March to September in what looked like a pretty horror-centric month. Alas, the third entry in the series, helmed by The Curse of La Llorona’s Michael Chaves, was pushed back to June 4, 2021.Full List of Box Office Results: September 11-13, 2020

(Photo by Orion/ courtesy Everett Collection)All Jodie Foster Movies Ranked1974 drama Alice Doesn t Live Here Anymore is already one hell of a way to jump-start a pre-teen acting career for Jodie Foster, yet it would be her second collaboration with director Martin Scorsese that made her an international star. 1976 s Taxi Driver was a shocking game-changer in a decade full of them, with Foster s casting as a 12-year-old prostitute eliciting awe and dread from audiences, not to mention an eventual Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. As a new unlikely industry It girl, Foster quickly began to fill her resume with roles equally precocious (Freaky Friday, Bugsy Malone) and dark (The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane) following Taxi Driver.Foster continued to hone her craft through the 80s and into the 90s, receiving a Best Actress Oscar for 1988 s The Accused, and moving on to even bigger Oscar night wins for 1992 s The Silence of the Lambs. 1995 s Nell would be Foster s last Oscar nom to date, but the Golden Globes have been more receptive: She s been nominated since for 1997 s Contact, 2007 s The Brave One, 2011 s Carnage, received the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2013, and finally won another acting Globe with 2021 s The Mauritanian.More of Foster s highlights during these decades include David Fincher s Panic Room, Spike Lee s Inside Man, and her own directorial-and-starring efforts like Money Monster.
